The Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C) winners were recognized at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) on Dec. 3. Eighteen finalist games were showcased on the floor during the four-day I/ITSEC show, where close to 15,000 attendees had the opportunity to play a diverse cross-section of serious games for lazy eye, medical communication, computer cybersecurity, forensics, retail management, and a variety of education, medical, and military topics. » KEEP READING

Opening ceremonies for I/ITSEC were called to order on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 8:30 a.m., in the Hyatt Regency Orlando Hotel, and followed by the Presentation of Colors. A video of Capt. Nelson P. Jackson, USN (Ret.) singing the National Anthem was shown in his memory; Nelson, the face of I/ITSEC for over 30 years, passed away earlier this year. Capt. Kent Gritton, USN (Ret.), director for Joint Training Integration and Evaluation Center (JTIEC)/Team Orlando and founder of the Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C), was recognized during the 2015 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference as the winner of the NTSA Modeling and Simulation Award for Training, for his vision, leadership, and hard work in the formation, growth, and evolution of the SGS&C. Operation Blended Warrior (OBW) kicked off the start of a five-year undertaking at I/ITSEC to invert the paradigm and develop solutions that will improve the creation and execution of LVC. Dr. Robert A. Sottilare, U.S. Army Research Laboratory-Human Research and Engineering Directorate, was recognized for his lifetime of contribution to the fields of modeling and simulation technology, and training research by the National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA). For over 30 years, Sottilare has been both a leader of M&S organizations and a contributor to simulator design and training methods. Sottilare’s work in reconfigurable simulators, distributed simulation experimentation, demonstrations, standards, and adaptive training has provided major contributions to the growth and evolution of modeling, simulation, and training. » KEEP READING

ADL recognized for top 2 tutorials at I/ITSEC By Leslie Spotswood, ADL Initiative

Months of hard work for the ADL Team paid off this year at I/ITSEC with a strong booth presence, various papers, the Virtual World Sandbox PlugFest Activity, and Partnership Lab and DoD meetings fostering collaborations amongst our stakeholders. In addition, ADL was recognized for the top two tutorials. Dr. Elaine Raybourn received second best tutorial for her work, “Transmedia Learning in the Wild: Supporting Military Training Through Story-driven Engagement” which discusses transmedia learning design for informal learning and the open source software approaches to track learner progress of informal learning. » KEEP READING

NCS supports STEM initiatives at I/ITSEC By Dolly Rairigh Glass

One of the highlights at I/ITSEC was the National Center for Simulation (NCS) STEM Pavilion booth, which featured students from Golfview Elementary in Rockledge, Florida, showing off their aviation and aerospace program. Golfview was recognized by NCS as a national model for simulation in elementary schools, and school officials note that, to their knowledge, it is the only elementary school in the U.S. that implements a specialized curriculum in aviation and aerospace using low-cost flight simulators. » KEEP READING

Dr. Sae Schatz, director of the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative, welcomed a full house to the Virtual World Sandbox PlugFest Activity at I/ITSEC 2015.
