His father had dropped out of high school after 10th grade to enlist in the Air Force during the Korean War and years later paid for his college education through the GI Bill and personal savings.

Human Research and Engineering Directorate welcomes Col. Harry Buhl By Michelle Milliner, ARL Public Affairs
Team Orlando members gathered to welcome incoming Army Research Laboratory Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED) deputy director Col. Harold A. Buhl, Jr. on July 8. Buhl comes to HRED from the Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation where he led for three years as the Project Manager, Combined Arms Tactical Trainers.
ADL Initiative welcomes Dr. Sae Schatz, new director Courtesy of ADL Initiative The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative is delighted to announce that Sae Schatz, Ph.D., has been named the new director as of June 22. Schatz is widely respected in the distributed learning community for her work in learning science, with a focus on andragogy, human performance assessment, adaptive training, simulation, online/ blended learning, and human-systems integration.
As director of the ADL Initiative, Schatz plans to emphasize advocacy for learning science, demonstration of the “art of the possible” involving learning technologies, and wide-ranging collaboration with ADL stakeholders.

Adaptation an important piece of SGS&C 2011 By Dolly Rairigh Glass For Serious Games Showcase & Challenge, the year 2011 was a year for adaptation. Specifically, it was centered around mobile platforms and the introduction of its own award category, and the first year for the special themed category, “Adaptive Force.”
With mobile use continuing to grow at that time, and the expansion of platforms now including MAC iOS, Windows Mobile and Android, the committee felt that 2011 was the right time to create the mobile game category.

Former Team Orlando leader Coolican part of TEDx event Col. Michael Coolican, director for the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD), was recently invited to speak at a TEDx event at the College of William & Mary, where he shared with the audience a bit about the world of non-lethal weapons, and the important role they play in our country’s line of defense. As part of the event, themed “Beyond,” Coolican talked about how many people might consider non-lethal weapons in the military an oxymoron, but instead they provide a complementary tool set with some of the other weapon systems in the military.

In a tough budget year, NCS and its Metro Orlando Defense Task Force (MODTF) partners were able to garner an additional $20 million from the State Legislature to mitigate the threat of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) on Naval Support Activity Orlando/Team Orlando. Three years ago, NCS led efforts to stand up the MODTF, a group of community stakeholders charged with protecting, growing and enhancing Naval Support Activity (NSA) Orlando/Team Orlando, the engine that drives the $5 billion Modeling, Simulation & Training (MS&T) Industry.

ARL director, Dr. Thomas P. Russell, was in Orlando on July 8 to retire Col. Gary L. Lasse, deputy director, Human Research and Engineering Directorate at the Simulation and Training Technology Center (STTC). Laase served the Army for more than 30 years, spending the last year at the STTC. The ceremony was well attended by the Joint Services and the industry and academic leaders of Team Orlando.
PM TRADE reaches another goal for industry standards By Dolly Rairigh Glass
Throughout the years, Program Manager for Training Devices (PM TRADE) has developed standards that have helped them realize cost savings and cost avoidance. Early in the 1980’s, it was the work on the MILES laser code standard, in 2001, it was the Common Training Instrumentation Architecture, and in 2006 it was the Future Army System of Integrated Targets. Just two years ago, PM TRADE reached out once again to industry partners to come together to develop interface standards for the Tactical Engagement Simulation System (TESS).
Industry Capability Day offers collaboration, networking Last week, the Team Orlando Summer Industry Capability Day featured 13 businesses, ranging from mobile learning to simulated air traffic controls to virtual reality headsets. Industry Capability Day is a great way for businesses with new or upgraded innovative products or services to share those with the Team Orlando workforce, as well as fellow industry members, creating wonderful opportunities for collaboration, networking and discussion.

The 15th annual NAVAIR Commander’s Awards ceremony, held in Patuxent River, Maryland, as well as via a national video teleconference on June 17, celebrated technical, business and leadership excellence in support of NAVAIR’s focus areas: increase speed to the fleet, consistently deliver integrated and interoperable warfighting capabilities, and improve affordability. This year, there were 52 nominations, representing a broad spectrum of programs and exemplifying the dedication, innovative spirit, and drive for results that enable NAVAIR to accomplish its mission effectively on behalf of the warfighters, said Command Career Counselor Michael Sekeet.
