Heading into the year 2010, the Serious Games & Showcase Challenge IPT committee began to realize that the growth in the number of games and the quality of games they had planned for was definitely becoming more evident. Although they didn’t see a big increase in the number of entries for this particular year, they did see a great potential for growth.

stemCONNECT gives opportunity to give back, influence STEM workforce By Dolly Rairigh Glass

The STEM Alliance of Central Florida and Team Orlando member, The Corridor, are working to grow and develop STEM support and resources for schools in Florida through stemCONNECT, a web portal designed to assist teachers and students in learning more about the high tech industries in Florida. It directly connects them with STEM experts who can share their knowledge about high tech career fields over an interactive web video conference.

TSIS brings together Team Orlando and industry with focus on procurement The 2015 Training & Simulation Industry Symposium (TSIS) is June 17-18 at the Rosen Centre Hotel, and is a great opportunity to network and interact with procurement officials from Team Orlando for Training and Simulation products and services – Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force. On Wednesday, the National Defense Industrial Association – Central Florida Chapter, will kick off the day with Captain Wes Naylor, commanding officer for the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD). He will be joined by Robert Matthews, NAWCTSD deputy program director, and multiple directors and program managers in his command to discuss topics ranging from naval aviation training systems and training ranges to cross-warfare programs to surface and undersea programs.

Senior leaders from the Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation (AFAMS) hosted representatives from the Royal Air Force (RAF) Air Warfare Centre (AWC) at its Orlando headquarters on June 8, 2015. The visit allowed them to network with AFAMS leadership and subject matter experts from the other Services based at Team Orlando. During the briefings, they all shared their experiences, differences and commonalities of their modeling and simulation (M&S) operating and training configurations.

PM TRASYS’ Walt Yates promoted to colonel By Dolly Rairigh Glass

On June 1, Brigadier General Frank Kelley, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Unmanned Systems, was in Orlando to officiate the promotion ceremony for Colonel Walt Yates, Program Manager, Training Systems, United States Marine Corps (USMC). Col. Yates’ wife and his two daughters were in attendance, as well as other friends and colleagues, to help celebrate the special occasion. In his remarks after being promoted, he thanked those in attendance who had mentored and supported him in previous assignments that led to him being selected for promotion and assigned as the Program Manager for Training Systems.

The panel, comprised of five former PEO STRI leaders who have been working in industry since their retirement from the Army, included: Maj. Gen. Bill Bond, consultant; Col. Matt Fair, Tactical Micro; Col. Mike Flanagan, CACI, Inc.; Col. Jim Ralph, ALATEC, Inc.; and Col. De Voorhees, General Dynamics.

New VA medical center opens in Lake Nona The Orlando VA Medical Center dedicated its new Lake Nonabased medical center in a ceremony on May 26, which took place in front of the new medical center. “This state of the art medical campus will serve as a place of healing for those who have served,” said Orlando VA Medical Center Director, Timothy W. Liezert. “With the opening of this innovative medical center, we are fundamentally changing the way we provide healthcare by offering new technologies and services that focus on the needs of our Veterans.”

ADL Initiative honored at Enterprise Learning! Conference, leads several sessions The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative is proud to announce its selection as one of ELearning! magazine’s top 100 learning organizations in the world. As a Learning! 100 Award winner, ADL was honored at the Enterprise Learning! Conference in Manassas, VA, as well as featured in ELearning! and Government ELearning! magazines. The conference, June 8-10, also featured several sessions presented by ADL staff. Jonathan Poltrack’s session, “Learning Data Analytics and the Experience API (xAPI)” was one that focused on the goals of the xAPI, potential organizational use cases, and resources available to assist in an xAPI implementation.

NCS steps up contributions to STEM education in 2015 This year, in addition to the annual scholarships to students entering or attending the University of Central Florida (UCF) and Daytona State College, NCS awarded five $1,000 scholarships to high school students in Orange and Seminole counties to help offset the costs of tuition and/or books as they enter an accredited Florida College, University or Technical School.

Team Orlando Summer Industry Capability Day on July 15 Next month’s Team Orlando Summer Industry Capability Day presented by National Center for Simulation is quickly filling up. The event is scheduled for July 15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and takes place in Partnership 3, Room 321 (3039 Technology Parkway). Industry Capability Day is a great way for businesses with new or upgraded innovative products or services to share those with the Team Orlando workforce, as well as fellow industry members, creating wonderful opportunities for collaboration, networking and discussion.
