May 2015 3D Printing Improves Training Capabilities and Cuts Cost By Theresa Bradley

Engineers and designers at Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) are finding solutions to difficult training challenges with 3D printing. In Orlando, NAWCTSD’s Rapid Prototype Design and Fabrication Lab – part of the Advanced Simulation, Visual and Software Systems Division – is equipped with sophisticated 3D printers that produce training devices quicker and more cost effectively than traditional methods. In some cases it’s creating parts that were impossible to produce in the past.

Tours, Demos and Presentations Highlight TAG Meeting By CDR Hank Phillips, NAWCTSD

In early May, the Department of Defense Human Factors Engineering Technical Advisory Group (DoD HFE TAG) held its 69th meeting, where 188 Human Factors & Human Systems Integration (HSI) professionals attended a total of 21 different sessions and special events over five days. Naval Support Activity Orlando hosted the meeting on behalf of Dr. Patrick Mason, Director, Human Performance, Training, and BioSystems Directorate, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (ASD(RE)).

UCF Cyber Defense Team Claims 2nd Victory In National Competition By Mark Schlueb, UCF Today

The University of Central Florida’s cyber defense team successfully defended its status as top dog over the weekend, winning the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition for the second year in a row. The Collegiate Cyber Defense Club @ UCF – also known as Hack@UCF – bested nine other teams to win the competition in San Antonio from Friday through Sunday.

The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative’s Community Manager, Craig Wiggins, was one of the featured speakers for the eLearning Guild Online Forum on Learning Management Systems (LMS), Learning Record Stores (LRS), and the Experience API (xAPI), a two-day program of sessions on May 20 and 21. Wiggins, along with Robert Gadd of OnPoint Digital, presented a session called “Learning Platform Strategies: LMS, LRS, or Both?” Wiggins stated that the event “was a great opportunity for learning professionals to understand how the past and present of learning experience management will shape the design of future performance interventions of all sorts.”

For the fifth consecutive year, Team Orlando has been recognized as a Learning! 100 top learning organization. For 2015, Team Orlando shares the distinction of top 100 honors with member organizations Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) and University of Central Florida Institute for Simulation and Training.

The 2015 member class of the National Center for Simulation (NCS) Modeling and Simulation Hall of Fame was honored in an induction ceremony at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC) on May 12. More than 200 guests, including Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, as well as several Team Orlando leaders, attended the special event to recognize four pioneers: Asmund S. Laerdal, Lt. Col. Earle L. Denton, USA (Ret), retired Navy SES Henry “Hank” Okraski and Col. James E. Shiflett, USA (Ret).

The National Center for Simulation, in partnership with Team Orlando, announced that Summer Industry Capability Day is scheduled for July 15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will take place in UCF’s Partnership 3, Room 321 A/B. The Industry Capability Days were created to bring together industry and Team Orlando members in a relaxed environment and easy-to-access venue, and to give the government the chance to see and learn about some upcoming and innovative ideas.
