The serious side of gaming: Counter-IED training on the Minehound By Michelle Milliner, ARL Public Affairs
It is no secret that as our technology improves, the enemy quickly adapts, making training a crucial element to stay ahead of our enemies. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are a serious and everpresent threat to our warfighters around the globe. Insurgents have learned to defeat traditional mine detection by using non-metal items like plastics and carbon rods when building IEDs. This shift in development of IEDs led to the acquisition of the Minehound dual sensor metal detector. The Minehound can detect underground ordinance with both a metal detector and a ground penetrating radar (GPR) simultaneously. The complexity of Minehound deployment prompted a need for sustainment training, not just on live training lanes, but also at home station. Initially, a desktop computer-based training system was developed to complement the extensive manual to assist with teaching the system’s user interface and complex calibration steps for various soil conditions.
NAWCTSD’s Villa: Thankful to be here By Dolly Rairigh Glass
Captain Jiancarlo Villa spent the first part of his childhood in Mexico, and from a very early age, developed a love for airplanes. He had cousins and uncles on his mother’s side who were pilots, and at some point even his dad had been a Learjet salesman. Villa set his sights on one day getting to fly. But one of the paths for realizing his dream of flying, the military, wasn’t really a choice living in Mexico. “Military opportunities were reserved for the entitled in Mexico, which was very much a caste-like system. The enlisted were not respected and were treated as second-class citizens,” Villa said.
Collaborating to improve warfighter performance: Squad Overmatch By Theresa Bradley
In conventional forces, 24 percent of wounded warfighters die of potentially survivable wounds, but the 75th Ranger Regiment loses just 3 percent of its warfighters. The highly collaborative Squad Overmatch seeks to close the gap. The Squad Overmatch (SOvM) study is a comprehensive approach to learning that explores the wide range of skills needed in today’s urban-battle environments. A collaboration of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, industry, academia and other government agencies, SOvM leverages findings from military studies of battlefield performance, stress response, leadership, communications, and tactical combat casualty care. That foundation was built into sophisticated training technologies and curriculum.
First class of UCF M&S behavioral cybersecurity to complete in December Special submission by the UCF M&S Behavioral Cybersecurity Program
In the fall of 2015, the Institute of Simulation & Training (IST) at the University of Central Florida (UCF), embarked on a first-of-itskind graduate certificate program in the modeling & simulation (M&S) of behavioral cybersecurity. Dr. Randy Shumaker, director of IST, conceptualized the program in 2015 in order to fill a gap in education. Shumaker noted that, “there were plenty of universities teaching the tools of cybersecurity, but no institute of higher education was really getting at the behavioral side of cyber. Further, no university was teaching the M&S of behavioral cyber either.”
October Industry Capability Day to feature Phase II SBIR demos The National Center Simulation (NCS) announced that October’s NCS/Team Orlando Industry Capability Day will provide an opportunity for industry companies to demonstrate prototypes that resulted from Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards with relevancy to the Modeling & Simulation Industry. The objective of this event is to assist small businesses in their pursuit of commercialization opportunities resulting from their SBIR Phase I and II Research/Research & Development (R/R&D) work. The event is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Partnership III, room 321 A/B, 3039 Technology Parkway, Orlando, Florida 32826.

Industry Capability Day features 14 MS&T companies and innovations Last month’s Team Orlando Industry Capability Day presented by National Center for Simulation featured 14 companies sharing some of their newest innovations. The exhibiting companies varied in areas of speciality from medical to 3D printing to augmented and virtual reality to power supplies. Mike Bennis, business development manager for Bren-Tronics, said he thought the Industry Capability Day was one of the best “small” capability events in which he’s participated. “I was busy from the time the doors opened through the time the event ended,” Bennis said. “I believe that hosting a small number of vendors enhanced the experience because the folks coming in to check out the technology were not overwhelmed with displays or technology. I was impressed with the number of people in key positions within the Team Orlando organizations that attended, which once again lends credibility of the entire event.
