February 2016 We’re focused on the best way to train and prepare Marines Col. Walt Yates, program manager for Marine Corps System Command, PM TRASYS, one of the four Team Orlando leaders to take part in this year’s Combined Professionals Associations Group (CPAG) Defense Forum Breakfast, focused much of his brief by continuing the conversation Marine Corps leaders were having at Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC). These discussions focused on how best the Marine Corps can train and prepare for the future, no matter what the fight will be.

Share your cyber capabilities at Cyber Day on March 10 With the first Team Orlando Cyber Day scheduled for March 10, there’s still time to sign up and share any cyber simulation tools or capabilities that can be used in a Live Virtual Constructive (LVC) training environment. “Team Orlando Cyber Day is a great opportunity for companies to showcase their cyber solutions for an LVC training environment,” said Dan Torgler, JTIEC deputy director. “It’s a requirement that all the services must meet, and an event like this allows us the opportunity to discuss our needs and how best to incorporate cyber in LVC.”

Learning more about Operation Blended Warrior with Gary Fraas The call for participation in Operation Blended Warrior (OBW) 2016 is out, and the targeted date for submitting an intent-toparticipate form is right around the corner on February 26. For more information and the participation form, visit http:// exhibits.iitsec.org. Just before the 2015 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), Gary Fraas, OBW lead representing NTSA, talked with Diana Teel, industry outreach program manager for Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) about some of the opportunities and challenges the team faced when planning their first OBW event.

Vince Amico, MS&T pioneer, passes at 95 Dr. Gaetano Vincent Amico, “Vince,” a longtime member and advocate of the Orlando Modeling & Simulation community, passed away on February 2, 2016. A pioneer in military simulation, Vince began his career in military simulation with the Naval Training Device Center in Port Washington, New York. He led the relocation of the activity to Orlando, Florida in 1965 when he was the Director of Engineering, and he continued to help grow the simulation industry in Central Florida. He introduced new digital technology, landmass and sensor simulation and improved visual systems into training devices, resulting in more effective training tools for the warfighter.

Training system advances help meet Navy & Marine Corps readiness During a busy yet successful Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation, and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), Navy scientists and engineers showcased the research and development that is helping to build a stronger force. Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD), Naval Air Warfare Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Navy Research Lab (NRL), Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS), Naval Survival Training Institute (NSTI), and many others presented their research findings in technical presentations; provided demonstrations of cutting edge technologies; and participated in Operation Blended Warrior, a live demonstration of a Live, Virtual and Constructive exercise that will help government, industry and academia begin to test and set standards for interoperability.

Open source specification, xAPI, a focus at Learning Solutions Conference By Leslie Spotswood, ADL Initiative

The much-anticipated Learning Solutions Conference is next month in Orlando, Florida, and a lot of focus will be on the Experience API (xAPI), an open source specification developed by Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative. The xAPI lets users capture and store (big) data on human performance, along with associated instructional content or performance context information (i.e. learning experiences). On Tuesday, March 15, the day before Learning Solutions kicks off, there will be an xAPI Camp hosted by our friends at Making Better. The Camp provides an opportunity to introduce participants to xAPI and a variety of use cases, and lets them mingle with a community of peers who are also interested in tracking formal, informal, and operational learning experiences.
