June 2016 TSIS kicks off eventful week for MS&T industry Tomorrow kicks off the 2016 Training and Simulation Industry Symposium, the annual mid-year opportunity for industry to network and interact with procurement officials for training and simulation products and services from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. It’s part of a weeklong cadre of events, beginning with the symposium, followed by the PEO STRI Change of Command on Thursday, the Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA) golf tournament on Friday, and the Army Birthday Ball on Saturday, June 18.
AFAMS celebrates 20 years There was a celebration on Friday, June 3, at the Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation (AFAMS) to recognize its 20 years of existence and steadfast commitment to advancing Air Force training. “Over the years we’ve had some mission changes based upon the changing paradigm of training in the Air Force,” Colonel Bradley Crites, AFAMS commander, told the group of AFAMS staff and special guests. “Through those changes we have embraced the technology and brought leadership that has expanded training options where live training would have been previously prohibitive.”
Mark your calendar for Industry Capability Day on July 27 Next month’s Team Orlando Summer Industry Capability Day presented by National Center for Simulation is quickly filling up. The event is scheduled for July 27 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and takes place in Partnership 3, Room 321 (3039 Technology Parkway). Industry Capability Day is a great way for businesses with new or upgraded innovative products or services to share those with the Team Orlando workforce, as well as fellow industry members, creating wonderful opportunities for collaboration, networking and discussion. Here is the current line up for next month’s event.
SGS&C welcomes new international partner The Asia Pacific Simulation Alliance opened its game submissions on May 1 for the first Asia Pacific Serious Games Showcase and Challenge (APSGSC). The APSGSC seeks to expand the general exposure and understanding of game-based training solutions and to promote the Asia Pacific capability internationally. Jennifer McNamara, SGS&C director, said, “Our IPT is happy to see the focus on the application of games for serious purposes continuing to expand globally with the addition of this newest partner. The Asia Pacific region is a well-established leader in the video game industry, and it will be exciting to see how that presence translates into the serious games space.”
NCS M&S Hall of Fame honors class of 2016 On June 7, the National Center for Simulation held the induction ceremony for the Modeling and Simulation Hall of Fame class of 2016, recognizing industry pioneers Ralph H. Baer, General (Ret) Gordon R. Sullivan, and William “Bill” Waite. The event showcased their stories, as well as the plaques that will honor them on the “Wall of Fame” located in the South Concourse of the Orange County Convention Center.

NCS Board Chair Steve Painter welcomed attendees before turning it over to NCS president and CEO, Lt. Gen. (Ret) Tom Baptiste to begin the ceremony. Baptiste took the opportunity to talk briefly about each of the 14 members that were inducted in the previous two years to share how each of them had impacted the modeling and simulation industry.
UCF Academia Day initiates conversations, partnerships Last month, Team Orlando member University of Central Florida hosted an inaugural UCF Academia Day. The event was an opportunity for UCF to feature some of their most innovative work and research in the areas of modeling, simulation and training to other members of Team Orlando, industry, and UCF colleagues. Randy Shumaker, Ph.D., director of the UCF Institute for Simulation and Training, said, “We’re very pleased with the turnout for the inaugural Academia Day. Those who showcased their capabilities began conversations that we hope will continue and lead to beneficial connections for everyone involved.”

Getting to know Deputy PEO Chérie Smith The Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) announced Chérie Smith as its acting Deputy Program Executive Officer in March 2015. Now no longer “acting,” Smith holds a key leadership position in an office with more than 1,200 military personnel, government-civilian and service-support contractors who execute the multi-billion-dollar simulation and training program, as well as manage the Foreign Military Sales program.

Orlando VAMC Leaders Sign Pledge Improving access to health care is the organizational priority of the Veterans Health Administration. Recently the Orlando VA Medical Center (VAMC) joined with other VA centers across America to sign a VA declaration to increase veterans’ access to healthcare. The pledge is a promise to focus business and service functions and principles on providing the greatest access to healthcare possible. Timothy W. Liezert, the director of the VAMC, led a supervisor’s meeting on April 20 to discuss the principles. Following, Orlando VAMC leaders signed the MyVA Access Declaration.
