From a very early age, Fred Evans was a go-getter. The Ventura realtor says he gets that work ethic from his mother, who immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines in 1946. From his first job as a paperboy to one of the top-ranked agents in the country, he credits his mother as his inspiration. Today, he is the co-founder of RE/ MAX Gold Coast Realtors, a team specializing in buying, selling, and managing properties across Ventura County and surrounding communities. With more than 230 agents, eight offices, and a slew of awards, the RE/MAX Gold Coast team consistently ranks in the top 10 teams across the California and Hawaii regions — no small feat. But Evans didn’t intend on going into real estate. After graduating from California State UniversityLos Angeles, he went to work in management for Sears where his work ethic kept earning him promotions. Eventually, the company asked him to relocate to the Midwest for a buying position. But Chicago didn’t sound appealing to the Southern California native, especially as his kids were entering junior high school. So, Evans stayed local with Sears as the catalog store manager through the ‘70s, and bought a home with his wife, Lynda, in Ojai’s Meiners Oaks neighborhood. It was a fixer-upper, but when they eventually sold it, he said, “I made more money on that 6
than I did with my yearly salary I got from working with Sears.” The real estate seed had been planted. When the kids got older, Evans accepted a job transfer to Northern California. “There, we purchased a not-so-nice property. And then from there, we moved to Santa Barbara and bought a house from the profit I made on the Eureka house,” Evans recalled. “We then purchased more property in Ojai which got subdivided, and I made a profit from this property.” And thus, Evans was hooked on real estate. california101guide.com
Thirty-five years later, he is still in the business. Evans specializes in hill and beach properties, but sells a broad spectrum of homes, from vacant lots to mobile homes to mansions. He has earned several of RE/MAX’s highest honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. He’s also a member of the Chairman’s Club and a member of the Circle of Legends, which has been granted to less than 200 associates, out of more than 90,000. “I have been really blessed in my career with helping so many clients with their life changes and real estate needs,” Evans said. “For me, it is not about the money or getting rich quick; it is the satisfaction and enjoyment of helping people meet their goals and being a small part of that.” He attributes his success to “a relentless pursuit to achieve satisfaction for our clients,” along with a pragmatic, no-nonsense
approach. As he says on his website, “forget about hype, razzle-dazzle and high-pressure sales tactics.” Real estate transactions can be complex, so Evans believes in educating his clients. “First thing is to make sure that home ownership is the right thing for them, and that they can afford to be a homeowner,” he explained. “Buyers need to have the proper qualification of a loan and the understanding of the longrange benefits of owning a home. I find out what their desires and needs are in a home, then I compare this to their affordability to determine what home will realistically work for them.” He meets his clients where they are, and the rest of his team does the same. “We have a Spanish-speaking agent, and agents knowledgeable in helping first-time home buyers up to seniors purchasing their last home,” Evans explained. “We also have the experience in selling vacant land and new home construction.”
As the market changes and technology evolves, buyers increasingly have new ways to find real estate — all things in which the Evans team is well-versed. But, Evans pointed out, “It still takes a knowledgeable and ethical agent to guide clients through the myriad of paperwork, inspections, negotiations, and legal documents that will protect their interest.” When he’s not working, Evans enjoys fishing, wine tasting, hiking, beach combing, and watching baseball and basketball — in addition to spending time with his wife of 50 years, Lynda, his two grown children, and three grandchildren.
