The project aimed at rethinking the city of today and being able to design new alternative projects. After spending some time in Istanbul, a question merged as to how do the people manage public and private spaces in human settlements. The reflection brought me to undertake a 6 month analysis on Istanbul’s human settlements: gecekondu. The research focused on entry spaces and how these manage to differentiate private from public space. Can there be, inside chaos, some urbanistic rules and systematic ways of dealing with privacy ? The analysis makes the acknowledgement of architecture without architects.

West from Brussels, at the flemish border, lies one of Belgium’s most precious countryside. Yet this landscape has lost its charm and dynamism due to the effect of the city sprawl. A way proposed to reconnect this area with Brussels was to work on its agriculture. Planning a bio agriculture and a mass vegetable production allows the area to forsee itself as Brussels’ vegetable garden. Parks and public spaces among wetlands and fields redefines the landscape as Brueghel painted it. The wetlands are planned to clean the water’s stream that flows down in the “pajottenland”’s valley.

Rebuilding a resilient Japanese city
As part of the productive seafront group, we investigated the industrial areas along the pacific seafront of Ishinomaki, devastated by the Tsunami of march 11, 2011. The research focused on the seafood process (sakanamachi) and the industrial port (kougyoukou). In order to frame the challenges of these industrial areas, an extensive survey of the (trans)port infrastructure and remaining industries was conducted. Contacts with local stakeholders have shown determination to enhance the industrial process. Beyond the Tsunami, local stakeholders see the planned construction of a 7 meters high seawall along the pacific coast as a barrier preventing from redeveloping industrial activities. The survey defined the specificity of Ishinomaki industrial activities: japanese traditional processing of natural resources such as fish and wood. We investigated the whole industrial cycle from fishing, cutting, processing to distribution in order to reduce the energy, time, pollution and cost consumed in this cycle. This study identified the potential synergies to create a global branding strategy and enhance an intermodal transport system to improve competitiveness of ishinomaki’s port industries. 22

Analysing the waterfront in Üsküdar, Istanbul
Understanding how the urban sprawl of Üsküdar works is understanding it’s need of connection to the water. Creating a network of connection via the waterfront from Üsküdar to Kadikoy was the aim of the project. Using the water as an urban issue allowed to recreate public spaces in a city without public green areas. A series of analysis and reserches were made on specifics topics such as transport, industrial port, green spaces, urban trafic and usage of water. New public transports, new ways of using public spaces, new green areas became an excuse to explore news urban water strategies. A waterfront promenade was designed to question the relation Istanbul has with water, especially in Üsküdar.
32

Analysing public space in Hong Kong
The projet started with a 2 month analysis of public spaces in Hong Kong. As we had never stepped in the city, the challenge of making an accurate analysis of the metropolis was greater. After a trip to Hong Kong and workshop with Kristof Crolla and his students the city had less secrets for us. One cannot ignore the strange feeling of loosing ones ground when walking in Hong Kong. This superbe dimension of a megacity had to be implemented into the project. Thinking public space as a fluid floor able to host overlapping activities and a daily metamorphosis is the main aim of the project. Rethinking the podium ’s connection to the urban space creating public space where a temporal notion could be explored: from short to long term urban landscape. From small to big scale, from small to big temporality, from small to big activities.
40

An experimental architecture in Istanbul
Bellastock is an association of young architects which would like to encourage students to experiment collective works and projects on the scale 1:1. It’s goal is to promote experimentation in architecture as a vector for an innovating and a learning process. Most of all, Bellastock wishes to raise questions on a material’s cycle by using daily, standard, easily to handle and abundant material to raise issues such as recycling and construction economy. With friends from all over europe and turkish students from different art departments in Istanbul, we created and organised a 3 day festival of ephemeral architecture. During these 3 days, participants had to build and innovate architecture by using crates and given tools. The results were : ....... a lot of fun!

CPCS is a belgian organisation who aims to keep the children out of the streets of Nepal and ease their way back into society. As a group of 14 students, we vonlunteered to help building new dormitories in the small town of Godavari, near Kathmandu. The task was not easy as we encounted language difficulties, but we managed to learn local technics and slowly help with the construction.

Challenging Architecture, building a low-cost house in Myanmar
During my trip in Myanmar, i drew and gazed at the very impressive vernacular architecture of Burma. Wondering how and what were the motives of building houses in such a specific way using so little materials. Answers were about to come when, with a group of unskilled super motivated builders, we designed a little bamboo house for a poor indian family in the village of Thanlyin, Rangoon. By walking in the streets and entering houses, I quickly studied and understood the baseline of burmese living and spatiality. I was ready to put on paper a design and lead a very motivated team. With no money and collective effort, in 3 days, a little bamboo house was raised from the ground. The simple design was built using local techniques, few nails and a lot of bamboo ropes. A small challenging project where each of us learnt and gained something in the end!
56
