Imagine a single pill that improves your mood, your health, even helps you lose weight! Just imagine! Is your glass half empty or half full? Studies indicate that happiness is a glass half empty. Behind all of the most popular modern approaches to happiness and success is the simple philosophy of focusing on things going right. But even Greek philosophers have proposed the opposite: that it is precisely our relentless effort to feel happy, or to achieve certain goals that make us miserable and lead us to self-sabotage. And that it is our constant quest to ignore the negative – insecurity, uncertainty, failure, sadness – that causes us to feel so insecure, anxious, uncertain or unhappy in the first place. Therefore, happiness involves learning to enjoy uncertainty, embracing insecurity and becoming familiar with failure. This month’s cover illustrates just that, how to tackle debilitating anxiety, read more about it on page 30. In our quest for happiness, we may need to acquire tools like mindfulness, Nūn Centre helps us out this month with all you need to know about practicing and achieving just that. We take an in-depth look at how mothers manage the delicate juggling act of back-to-school and reinforcing a routine. There are also some ideas to help your children pick their Halloween costumes this October, on page 56. In this issue we get into fall fashion trends hitting the stores this season. Perhaps the cherry on top in this issue is the tête-à-tête we had with the stars of the Ramadan hit Grand Hotel, the incomparable Anoushka and rising starlet Dina El Sherbini, find out more about these unstoppable talents on page 10. As usual, as I finished reading this issue, I find myself inspired. We hope this issue keeps you company for a while as we roll into fall season. See you next month.

Bringing Her Talent to Grand Hotel

Anoushka on Acting, Singing, and Clean Eating By Hilary Diack

If any one character from Ramadan 2016 television will remain imbedded in our memories for years to come, hands down it’s the autocratic matriarch Esmat Hanem from Grand Hotel. Superbly portrayed by the multitalented Anoushka who embodied so much of what a woman is capable of in the face of insurmountable challenges. Cairo East Magazine chatted with Anoushka, and got to know her a lot more intimately. 14

11

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Celebrity

CEM: In Grand Hotel how closely does Esmat Hanem resemble your real character? Anoushka: Undoubtedly we do share certain characteristics: emotional intensity simmering under a reserved surface, dignity, and inner strength. It must be added though that I am more of an open book, and have a strong code of ethics that I live by, so I could never go to the lengths that Esmat went to in order to reach my goals. What qualities do you most admire in her, in spite of her being the villain of the piece? Oh, isn’t calling her a villain a bit harsh? She really didn’t have many options open! You have to admire her inner resilience, her ability to strategise, her talent for manipulation, all while defending her pride, reputation and position.

Scene from Grand Hotel

What was the most difficult scene for you in Grand Hotel? There were several, but the most challenging would have to have been the final scene with her daughter. You need to draw deeply upon your emotional reserves when playing this type of role. What did you enjoy most about the filming process? It was a joy to be in. I loved the series, and we had a stellar ensemble with a great rapport. The era, with its beautiful decor, furnishings and costumes totally resonated with everything that appeals to me. The style of conversation, the body language - I have to say that I enjoyed every part of it and felt so at home in the role. How did you meet the challenge of filming two different series at the same time playing extremely different characters? Logistically all credit has to go to the production managers. They arranged the timetables so well that things flowed really smoothly. This made it a lot easier for me to focus on playing the roles. I enjoyed both characters, and each role had its own demands. I found elements within myself reflected in both characters so it wasn’t difficult making the transition during filming periods. >>

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Celebrity

What is your beauty routine? Beauty routine? Hmm... Maybe I should have one. I like to keep life uncomplicated and work from the inside outwards, so I focus on feeling well and balanced through a healthy lifestyle. I avoid salt, sugar, dairy products and oil in my diet, although I love food. Bread is definitely my guilty pleasure. I don’t smoke, and get exercise by going for long walks with my dog, and I enjoy horseback riding when time permits. Swimming is vital for me, so I make an effort to be near water as much as possible. I make an effort to remember to drink plenty of water as well. And importantly, I keep my baggage light by not bearing grudges. Quick Fire-Round Who is your celebrity crush? Anthony Hopkins... and Sean Penn, Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep. I also have a lot of respect for Egypt’s own Nelly Karim, both as an actor and a person. We must be very proud of her achievements. How many pairs of shoes do you own? The series Seqout Hor really drew attention to how devastating depression and mental illness can be, not only for the sufferer, but for all who live and interact with him or her. As we spend so much time on set while filming series, most of the cast set up their rooms in the studio to resemble their home atmosphere. We bring special items of furniture, mementos and familiar objects to keep us from feeling cut off from family and friends. After the massive success of Grand Hotel, what are your future plans? It was a busy summer, so definitely a late season holiday at the beach to revitalise. I have to read through quite a few scripts for roles I am considering as well. I have never placed myself in the position of ‘having’ to play any part, I must ‘feel’ for what I do. I am also currently kept busy working on a new album, and that takes up a lot of my time and energy. And, when time permits, overseeing the work on my new house.

16

13

Which is closer to your heart, singing or acting?

Oh, I adore shoes... and bags. Too many to count.

Whatever you do, you have to love your job. For me, both have massive importance, but in different ways. Expression of ideas and emotions are core to both. In acting, you are part of a dynamic interchange of thoughts, emotions and body language, all delivering a message. Empathy and communication between all members of the cast and crew is paramount for reaching the finished product. It is all about give and take.

Describe your perfect day.

When singing, being up there alone on stage, I draw into my own cocoon and find the depths of my feelings.

I wear whatever is required when it comes to costumes, but do not go for mauve or orange in my own wardrobe. I feel at home in white, turquoise, and soft pastels.

What is the background of your new album? For me, singing has to come from the heart, so it is based on both personal experiences and events relating to others that have had an emotional impact on me. Above all, the songs are about matters I relate strongly to.

Get up early, make sandwiches, hit a secluded beach with my dog and a few close friends to enjoy silence, apart from the gentle sound of the waves. Describe yourself in one word. Emotional Vacation spot? I would love to visit the temples of Tibet, along with India and Thailand. Colour you never wear?

Early or late riser? Definitely early, the calm energy of early morning is wonderful. Winter or summer? I am really a cold weather person at heart.

The Magic of Grand Hotel

Dina El Sherbini on her Role, Life and Reaching Goals By Hilary Diack

Drawing viewers to their screens each Ramadan evening, Dina El Sherbini won kudos for her riveting performance of Ward in Grand Hotel, the cunning, ambitious and ruthless young woman viewers loved to hate. Adding to her already diverse and impressive repertoire, this part showcased her ability to bring out the best in even a difficult character. Cairo East Magazine took the opportunity to catch up with her after a hectic summer. >> 18

15

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Celebrity

Scene from Grand Hotel CEM: Dina, your portrayal of Ward in Grand Hotel has received a lot of acclaim, were you expecting such a reaction? DS: Not at all, as Ward was rather evil. I was honestly afraid that people would not like her or be able to warm to her. It was important for me to inject some emotion into the role, especially with her children, so our viewers would be able to empathize with her to some extent. After all, even the most dysfunctional character must have some saving graces. Scene from Grand Hotel

How did you prepare yourself for the role? Honestly, we had an amazing director and scriptwriter, so we developed the character together. I searched for ways to make her more appealing, to let people find a little love for her. First, I had to immerse myself into her character, to sincerely be able to love her myself. Without that, the portrayal would not have been convincing. The series itself was massively popular. What do you think appealed so much to viewers?

Scene from Grand Hotel

Our viewers loved the series. They saw Egypt the way they wanted to see her: the setting of such an iconic hotel, the amazing scenery, and the CAIROEASTMAG.COM

“Life inevitably makes you stronger as it presents you with different situations.”

Scene from Grand Hotel glamour and romance of that era. All of these things bring incredible nostalgia, and a craving for the beauty that Egypt has.

In the world of film, as many other fields, careers always seem to have their ups and downs, what is your advice for keeping on track?

Audiences are tired of the constant barrage of films and series with drugs and overdone gratuitous violence; they want a return to something more intriguing.

Work hard, do your best, read a lot, study, and have faith. It is important to keep your goals in sight.

Were there any standout moments during filming that will stay with you? There were so many. I am sure I will never forget the scene when Ward was giving birth, and also when she died. We filmed this part in Lebanon, and the scene needed me to sit in cold water for around 15 hours. That was the last day of shooting and will remain etched in my memory for a long time to come! In what way have your personal life experiences helped you in developing the characters you play? Life inevitably makes you stronger as it presents you with different situations. We keep learning every day, and of course I draw on these insights when preparing for my roles. The experiences of people close to me also have important emotional impact; I find these inspiring and helpful when interpreting a character.

20

17

Looking forward, what type of roles do you see coming up that would interest you? I would love to play the part of a deaf and dumb woman. It would stretch my abilities so much, to be able to emote and express using only body language, emotions, facial expressions and my eyes. Now, that is acting... What are you working on at present? A high-powered action drama called Gawab Ieteqal with the wonderful Mohamed Ramadan. It is a joy to be able to work with director Mohamed Samy as well. All round, we have great chemistry. Mohamed Ramadan is an amazing actor, and an amazing person. What about hobbies, pets and time to relax? My work is so demanding I really can’t find time for hobbies. However, I always manage time for my darling Golden Retriever, Latchi.

How do you stay in shape? I adore food and eat a lot. That means I need to burn up the calories by working out regularly, every day if my schedule allows. I use an exercise bike and enjoy Pilates and cross-fit too. Quick Fire-Round Your favorite way to relax? Go to the sea Comfort food? (Pause)... Fast Food Most treasured item of clothing? My shoes. All of them. Apart from that I dress according to my mood. Last book read? Hepta by Mohamed Sadek, and Afrah El Kobba by Naguib Mahfouz. Getaway holiday location? Gouna Person who makes you laugh the most? All of my family, they have great humor Morning or night person? Mornings for me. What is your favorite app? I must admit that I am not into tech at all. Forget about apps, I use my phone as a phone. Bas.

Best Highlighters and Where to Highlight By Lydia Schoonderbeek

The basic rule of highlighting is to highlight in the

places where the light would hit your face, making them more prominent.

Always use a foundation 2 shades lighter than your skin tone to highlight.

1

Apply a concealer in an upside-down triangle share underneath your eyes. And also using your ring finger, tap some concealer onto the inner corners of your eyes.

Highlight between the brows where a furrow may appear. Highlight under the eyebrow bone to lift the brown and brighten the eyes. Highlight the high point of the cheekbone Benefit to define the cheek. Watt’s Up

films and documentaries. Entries have been submitted from many countries, and standout films include Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next, and In the Last Days of the City by young award-winning documentary-filmmaker Tamer El Said.

In addition to a full schedule of screening there will be seminars, lectures and associated events to attract a broad audience. Visitors are expected from both neighbouring countries and further afield, with some big name celebrities from abroad expected to join the ranks of the local stars, producers and directors.

firmly in the spotlight. It offers great exposure for our own cinema, and the undoubted creativity of Egypt’s filmmakers and stars. What factors are important to ensure the success of CIFF 2016? The community can play a vital role by supporting the festival in many ways. The Ministry of Tourism is giving a tremendous amount of help, and will assist in coordinating attendance by leading international stars. Marriott Hotels are our official hotel and are covering catering. The final night will take place in the spectacular garden of the Mena House at the foot of the Pyramids.

The 3rd Cinema of Tomorrow International Competition will take place concurrently within the framework of CIFF. This covers short films, including fiction, animation, documentaries and experimental works. The competition throws the spotlight on up-and-coming filmmakers while building cultural bridges around the globe. Cairo East Magazine sat with media expert and producer Amr Koura, to learn more about what is behind such a major event. Recently appointed as a consultant to the Advisory Committee, Koura has the breadth of experience and acumen to ensure that the important opening and closing ceremonies run smoothly and with the expected fanfare. Following the success of recent Arabian Cinema Awards, held at Movenpick Media City in Cairo, Koura is enthusiastic about the impact this year’s CIFF will have within the community.

CEM: What changes can we expect to CIFF this year? AK: In a nutshell, better organization, more attendance by stars from Egypt and abroad, and increased interest from the film community worldwide. What are the benefits to local film industry? CIFF was first launched in 1976 and was considered to be one of the top ten film festivals in the world. There is no reason why it can’t hold that place again. The benefits stretch far beyond the industry; this is an event that puts Egypt and its pool of talent

finely tuned; attention to detail is key for us. There will be a special area for press and media, which will facilitate communication and coverage, and we expect many interesting interviews to result from CIFF this year. Of course there will be representatives of foreign press, especially from the industry, such as Variety and Hollywood Reporter. Which film will have the honour to be first to be screened? That privilege goes Women’s Day written by Hana Attiya, directed by Kamla Abu Zekry, and produced by Elham Shahin, the film also stars Elham Shahin, alongside Nelly Karim, Mahmoud Hemeda, Ahmed Daoud, Nehad El Sebai, Ahmed El Fishawi, Farouk El Fishawi, Hala Sedqi and Iyad Nasser. The story revolves around the impact on women within a community when the local youth center decides to allocate a day at the swimming pool especially for women. The social, psychological and emotional reverberations are reflected succinctly in this masterful work. What awards will be presented? There are several: •

The Golden Pyramid for Best Film, to be presented to the producer.

The Silver Pyramid - a Special Jury Prize for the Best Director

The Naguib Mahfouz prize for the Best Screenplay

A prize for the Best Actor

A prize for the Best Actress

A prize for the Best Artistic Contribution

We then caught up with producer Mohamed Hefzy to find out more about what we can expect: CEM: What other events will be integrated into CIFF this year? MH: As per the previous year, I am looking after the coproduction conference of Cairo Film Festival, titled Cairo Film Connection, which is in its fourth edition this year. Filmmakers and producers with exciting projects, which

we select come to meet with co-producers, sales companies, and other film experts that can help them to move their projects forward. The connection selects films in development, production, or post-production. There are also prizes given to the winning films as selected by a jury. What important trends do you see in cinema festivals taking place? Generally the big name directors all

target Cannes, followed by Venice, Toronto, and then Berlin. Sundance and Telluride (the big US festivals) are very US centric. As far as sales, independent yet star-driven English language films still dominate the market, after of course big studio pictures from Hollywood. For art house or auteur driven world cinema, France still remains the number one market, with hundreds of such films released every year.

Dr. Mostafa Hussein on Debilitating Anxiety

How to Recognize, Tackle it, and Manage it By Francesca Sullivan

Would you consider yourself an anxious person? For many of us some

degree of stress and anxiety is a part of normal life, and can even be a positive thing. Raised adrenalin levels may be useful under certain circumstances, enabling a better performance, whether at a school test, a job interview, delivering a speech in public or meeting the many challenges life throws our way. However, when feelings of anxiety become irrational or overwhelming and begin to limit and dictate to us, it might be time to seek help. Cairo East Magazine talked to Dr. Mostafa Hussein Omar, a specialist psychiatrist and member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK, at the renowned Behman hospital in Helwan, about issues around debilitating anxiety, how to recognize it and ways to tackle it.

34

31

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Feature

CEM: How do you define stress and anxiety and at what point do they become mental health issues? MO: Anxiety is a term that describes the feeling of fear that we get when we face difficult or threatening situations. It is a normal response to stress that we all experience. We all worry about many things at certain stressful or difficult times. However, when the anxiety is so intense or prolonged that it becomes a source of continuous suffering or starts to affect a person’s ability to perform their day to day activities then it is considered a psychiatric disorder.

most common being obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, simple phobia, social phobia and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Life experiences can also play an important role in the onset of anxiety, such as big changes in life circumstances; losing a job, pregnancy, or exams.

How prevalent is this kind of disorder? According to the most recent study published in 2009, which was researched by the National Survey of Mental Health in Egypt as part of an initiative by the General Secretariat for Mental Health and WHO, around 5% of the population has an anxiety disorder. This falls into an average world- wide statistic for which the range is from 2.5% to 10%. War, political unrest and economic crises can increase those numbers, and the study also showed that women are twice as likely to suffer from an anxiety disorder. This is a consistent finding with many surveys around the world in both developing and developed nations, though in my opinion women in Egypt do appear to suffer considerable life stresses, including financial worries, childbirth and bringing up children, FGM and its consequences, and domestic abuse. According to the survey above, ‘women bear the brunt of the adversities associated with poverty: less access to education, physical abuse from husbands, forced marriages, fewer job opportunities and, in some societies, limitation of participation in activities outside the house.’ The fact that I see more women in my clinic than men is also due to what we term ‘health seeking behaviours’; women are more likely than men to acknowledge and seek treatment for mental health issues. Patients present various different types of anxiety disorders, the

What are the main causes? Like being dealt an unlucky hand at cards, genetics play a part in individual susceptibility to both anxiety and depression. There are some individuals who are more likely than others to become anxious, and although scientists have not yet discovered the exact gene that carries this, there is definitely a hereditary risk. However, since there are other important factors involved, psychological, environmental and social, if you have such a family history it does not necessarily mean you will inherit it, or deal with it in the same way.

Traumatic experiences, such as different types of abuse, a car crash or torture can make a person anxious for months or years after the event, even if there is no longer a source of threat. What are the symptoms? The most usual mental symptoms of anxiety are worrying all the time, feeling tired, irritable, sleeping badly and struggling to concentrate. As for the physical symptoms, these often include racing heartbeat, sweating, muscle tension and pains, shaking, heavy breathing, dizziness, indigestion and diarrhea. How is it identified? Like the majority of psychiatric disorders, anxiety disorders are diagnosed from the complaint as presented by the patient, symptoms and how these symptoms are affecting the day-to-day functioning of the person. This is done through a face-to-face interview with a psychiatrist. Is anxiety linked to depression? There can be definite links between the two. Anxiety may present as the primary condition, but there can be a history of depression. Conversely, suffering anxiety over a long period of time can lead to depression.

Certain drugs can make us more anxious, either immediately, such as after taking caffeine and amphetamines, or over the long term such as the prolonged use of alcohol and tobacco products. How can counseling help people address and resolve the issues that are creating anxiety and stress? Treatment can be through medication or psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is an intensive talking treatment that addresses different aspects of the disorder, feelings, thoughts and behaviors. The most common form of psychotherapy for anxiety disorders is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It is time limited – on average once or twice a week for eight sessions - and focuses on the ‘here and now’ aspect of anxiety. In CBT the emphasis is not on the event that triggered the anxiety, but on how you think about it and deal with it in your day-to-day life. Depending on the severity of the illness, I would usually prefer to prescribe CBT, as well as other recommendations such as relaxation techniques, meditation and exercise, before resorting to drugs. >>

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE

Which medications are most commonly prescribed for stress and anxiety? Tranquillizers are the most commonly prescribed. These include the benzodiazepines, like diazepam and most sleeping tablets. They are very effective, but can be addictive, even after just a couple of weeks. Ideally, they should not be taken for longer than 2 weeks, but abuse of tranquillizers is unfortunately common. Antidepressants: They usually take two to four weeks to make a difference. For some people they can decrease interest in sex and less often they may cause nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth and constipation. Beta-blockers can be used in low doses to control the physical shaking of anxiety. Can symptoms be relieved through improved nutrition, and ‘natural’ products? Which foods can help? There is no convincing evidence that there are any particular foods that can help people with anxiety disorders. However avoiding too much caffeine or alcohol is certainly advisable. Claims are made for various herbal remedies to help with anxiety, but larger studies need to be carried out to reach conclusive evidence. Some preparations are known to be effective in treating anxiety - Valerian, for example. The problem lies in the fact it is unregulated and the exact amounts being prescribed are often not carefully monitored. Valerian can actually be potentially toxic to the liver if taken at the wrong dose.

What holistic and behavioral methods can relieve anxiety? There is evidence that regular physical exercise; relaxation and breathing exercises can help. Also mindfulness techniques, meditation and yoga can provide some benefit. What are your top tips for maintaining a healthy balanced lifestyle with good stress management? Exercise often. Maintain a regular sleep routine. Don’t try to juggle too much at once. Learn to say no when you are being overloaded. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Trying to deal with overwhelming feelings of stress and anxiety on your own will only make the problem worse

Getting Back on Track After the Holidays Guidance from Dr. Josette Abdalla By Harim Humayun

n her deep soothing voice,

licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Josette Abdalla answers the phone late evening and we launch into a riveting chat about problems people have getting their kids (and themselves) back into school/work mode after relaxing for so long.

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Feature

Cairo East Magazine learns how to get ready for school and work after a relaxing break away and some fun things for you to try out with your children (and yourself!).

by having regular meal times and engaging in calm activities during the day gradually. The last 24 hours should not be hectic. It has to be a fun and gradual preparation where the child is not overwhelmed and bored at the same time. What are the most important adjustments to be made? Setting the mind frame of the child is very important. There are always some children that do not want to go back to school while others really do. So for those who are not keen on going back to school, it’s a good idea for the parents to have their child socialize with two interesting kids from their child’s class. Or if the children are taking the bus, it could be the children on that bus. The contagion that comes along with a child not being keen on going to school is that they latch on, so this can be a step towards easing the child into the idea of going back to school. What steps can the whole family take together to get back into work/school mode? Nobody is going to go out of his or her way; it should not be a dramatic situation. It should be a relaxed situation in which the child should not feel like something horrible or out of the ordinary is about to happen. It should be a normal setting in which there could be a fun activity a day or two before the start date of school, but make sure it is not a long one, something that lasts about 4 to 5 hours and does not make the child get nervous.

CEM: How far in advance should you try to get the children back into normal school year routine? Dr. JA: I would say around 10 days before the actual start of the school year. It should be a gradual reintroduction like going to sleep at regular hours; during summer holidays parents are relaxed about sleep schedules. Children of all ages stay up beyond their bedtime and the routine is completely disturbed, so it’s a gradual change back that we should focus on. You can start by reinforcing the routine that comes along with the start of school, meaning that if a child (it differs with age) is going to have dinner around 7/8ish, bath after that and then bedtime, we should start getting back into that routine

rebelling against having to return to school will probably gradually decrease In most cases when they find out who else is going to be with them in the school or class – they are much happier to go.

And if there are obligations that need to be fulfilled, as some children do in families where the parents are not together, it’s good to get the social obligations like meeting up with a parent out of their way before the start of the school year. How can you handle a child who is rebelling at the idea of holidays being over? This is why I am talking about the indirect approach rather than the direct approach; let the child rebel as much as he/she wants without focusing on it too much or allowing it to become an issue. When they gradually start to settle into their bedtime routine, changes and discussions about having to go to school are not blown out of proportion or handled in a confrontational way,

Are there any simple tips that can make the idea of getting back to school more fun? Some parents will find it very useful to carpool if their child does not take a bus. It would be an indirect fun activity, one day its one mother/ father picking up a few children, another day is some other parent etc. - kids enjoy this kind of get together. You can give them motivation such as scheduling training sessions for sports during weekends, or getting new stuff for school, e.g. a new pencil case or a new backpack; or rearranging their room in at attractive way, etc. nothing extravagant or over the top, just a few things to get them keen and eager. Even for adults it can be difficult to get back into work mode, what advice can you give to avoid postholiday depression? Same thing with parents – whether they are working parents or nonworking parents – everyone needs to adjust to a routine. It should be so that the parent feels like a load has been settled before getting back into the school and work routine. The adults also need to have a methodology where all the activities related to house and work are handled in a clear routine. You cannot come back from a vacation where the house is a mess, and it is an attack of sorts where >> CAIROEASTMAG.COM

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Feature

all the cleaning, shopping and resituating happens at the same time. So the adult has to get into a clear routine in which they are relaxed and the kids are also relaxed in the 10 days where we begin the gradual preparedness for school. So when the child starts school and comes home grumpy to a house that is a whirlwind of activity and to a parent who is overwhelmed, it takes a toll on them and creates a vicious cycle of negativity in both the adult and the child. How many extra-curricular activities should a child have once they get back to school? I do not recommend extra-curricular activities during the weekdays unless the child is in KG and has no homework. If a child comes home at 4pm, then is expected to sleep at 7pm or 8pm, you find that it is the mother who is pushing the child to change, go to the club, train well, then go back home, to do homework. This may cause the child to throw tantrums and rebel, which in turn can anger the parent. In general, if this is the routine than it is not worth pushing extra activities on the children, they can just enjoy a relaxed evening, let them play with their own toys, give them half an hour on screen devices and make sure family bonding is kept a priority. How many hours of TV should a child watch during the week? Depending on the age of the child, it could go from less to more. Some schools already do a lot of the work on iPads, Interactive White Boards and computers. When a child has completed all of his or her obligations, as a fun activity, I would recommend letting him or her watch TV for say 1 to 2 hours at the most per day under certain circumstances. On weekends, IT time can go up to 4 hours, but with breaks. What else must we bear in mind? It is important for children to have a sense of responsibility. Parents need to set criteria – do your work, we’ll check, finish up all your obligations etc. and then the children can be rewarded for completing those obligations. The routine set in place

40

37

once the school year begins should not be rushed for a child. Let’s say a child (14 years old) wakes up at 6/6:30 am, heads to school after that, comes home from school at 4pm, takes an hour to relax, starts homework at 5pm which needs at least 3 hours, bedtime is at 10pm, and we need to ensure they get 8 hours of sleep. Add training or extracurricular activities into this schedule – this is what we would call a rushed and hectic routine for a child. There needs to be a balance with family also – a child needs family but hanging out with them should not be a day chore. Add a bit of sport into the routine for weekends, make them socialize with their classmates, go out together for something quick, easy and fun. Make sure it is a routine filled with lots of love, affection and responsibility – starting from when they are around 4 years old and onwards.

Living with

Mindfulness By Seham Kafafi

42

39

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Wellbeing

Defining Mindfulness Mindfulness is a state of being in the present moment, accepting it, without judgment. To be mindful is to observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance. The idea is not to “clear your head”, but to bring your mind into focus. Rather than living in autopilot, letting each moment pass before you, mindfulness can bring a fresh perspective and an open, awakening experience to your daily life. Understanding what being “mindful” is can be a bit tricky as opposed to being “mindless”. By being mindful, your mind is fully engaged with the events occurring in front of you. To be mindless is to be completely disengaged from your present experience and be lost in thought and obsessive thinking. Although our modern society does not particularly facilitate such a natural way of being, you can bring this state of awareness with you throughout your daily life.

less efficient and slowing us down. With interruptions come discontinued trains of thought, inhibiting our ability to complete tasks and perform our best work, therefore, leaving many of us frustrated and anxious. Practicing Mindfulness Cultivating mindful awareness takes practice and selfcompassion. A high degree of concentration and acceptance is required during practice. There are many techniques used to practice mindfulness such as meditation, yoga, or other sports like martial arts. You can use daily activities to be mindful as well such as walking, eating, or listening to music. Bring your attention away from your active mind and into the activity in front of you. Because we are so used to the mind being active, staying in the present moment may be challenging when you first begin.

Mindfulness Within You Mindfulness is a trait that we all possess, however it may have been overridden during the course of our upbringing. A child has a natural fascination towards their surroundings. They have a curiosity and wonder towards life and constantly ask us the question: why? The natural curiosity is overtaken as we begin to plan for our futures or perhaps even blame our past for our failures. Thanks to our modern society, we have adapted to constant interruptions and multitasking even though it is making us

Try this exercise: listen to your favorite song. Every time your mind drifts into thought, bring

your attention back to the song. Be compassionate with yourself if you find that thoughts arise frequently. Practicing mindfulness is ideally done with a teacher, however, you can access YouTube videos and audio files online. It is recommended to see a teacher in the beginning for support and guidance, and with more experience, you can develop a home practice. The Benefits of Mindfulness The mind is excellent at adding narrative and commentary to each aspect of our lives. The role of the mind is to do so, however, when this becomes excessive, you experience stress and anxiety. This can also cause damage to neural cells related to memory. The benefits of mindfulness include increased attention and focus, emotional regulation, clarity in problem-solving, and sleep improvement. A regular meditation can aid in developing self-awareness while movement exercises like yoga and martial arts increase body awareness. Mindfulness may be practiced in relation to other spiritual or religious activities, yet you do not need to be of a certain faith to be mindful. Mindfulness and Psychological Well-Being Mindfulness programs have been developed and modified by health practitioners to alleviate the symptoms of various psychological and physical challenges. A recent study by Mark Wiliams and Willem >>

Kuyken, two leaders of mindfulness research, has proven that people with depression who underwent Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy showed a 44% reduction in relapse after one year versus people who sustained a consistent dose of antidepressants. From the study, they were able to conclude that those who are compassionate towards themselves during times of low mood are able to break reactivity. Where to Find Mindfulness Classes Nūn Center hosts workshops, private sessions, and will be running an 8-week Mindfulness course in October. The course consists of meeting once per week for 8 weeks in 2-hour sessions. Every week you will learn a new meditation, the purpose behind the meditation, as well as discuss any experiences that came up during self-practice. Group sessions are an ideal platform for sharing common themes with others and for developing a rapport with those who are practicing regularly. During the 8-week course, you will learn a combination of meditations, and mindful movement exercises, and you will learn to integrate mindful daily activities on a weekly basis.

The course requires a strong time commitment of 1-hour everyday for meditation and journal entry reflections. The purpose of the journal entries is to observe your thoughts and feelings as you go along the course, to identify common patterns, and improve your self-awareness. If you are currently undergoing intense life changes, it is advised to wait until matters are stable before entering the course.

About the Practitioner Seham Kafafi was awarded a MSc. Mindfulness: Neuroscience and its Clinical Applications in January 2016 from King’s College London. Her academic work focuses on the neural effects of meditation through which she analyzed fMRI data comparing those who have substantial meditation experience versus non-meditators. Kafafi’s initial motivation to complete her Master’s was to find an alternative means of treating psychological difficulties rather than psychiatric drugs. During her undergraduate studies, she worked with a team of students to identify the psychological needs of the Cairo population after the revolution in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. Kafafi was born in the U.S. and moved to Egypt in 2009 to be closer to family. She attributes her wellbeing to the love of her family and to discovering mindfulness meditation. Having struggled with depression herself, she discovered an empowerment towards her mental health by overcoming previous life events, which had been overwhelming her. Through mindfulness, Kafafi has stopped identifying herself with her past and began to formulate her core values based on her experiences. Refer to our address book

Work Magic, Feminine Wisdom and the Art of Being Whole An Interview with Anaïs Bock

By Nada Iskander

We all wear professional masks to work.

Every one of us knows the drill. In the morning, you don’t just put on a fancy shirt to go to work; you also wear your mask of professionalism. It’s a metaphorical accessory. It makes us sit up straight, contain the childish giggles and put our daydreams in their place in order to interact with other very grown up human beings and talk about grown up things in grown up ways.

46

43

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Wellbeing

We are so used to our professional masks that we sometimes forget to take them off after work. We might notice this because it is really hard to unwind in the evenings or because our loved ones remind us that we are speaking in a “job lingo” that they do not understand. When we begin to identify with what is in fact our professional mask, we forget that we are all just improvising on this journey through life, that nobody really knows what they are doing and that we are all living breathing human beings with needs, desires, dreams and (in my case) an insane appetite for chocolate. Fair enough. What is wrong with wearing a professional mask? The problem with the professional mask is that it does not encompass all that we are. It basically only represents a very structured, professional, results-oriented side of us that lives on adrenalin and testosterone. You could say that the professional mask represents our masculine side, which is a hormonal bummer especially for women, who may end up feeling even more drained and stressed than their male counterparts. Beyond that, we live in a world in which we spend an incredible amount of time at work - and shouldn’t it be possible, even mandatory for us to be ourselves fully for the majority of our days? That sounds great. You say that you are all about bringing feminine wisdom to work. What exactly does that mean? When we speak about feminine wisdom, we are not talking about stereotypically “girly things” like pink and gossip. Rather, we are talking about feminine qualities that each and every one of us has, regardless of what gender we identify with. Examples of male qualities are competition, goal setting, performance, having and doing, logic, the pursuit of certainty, independence, planning, control of future and cause and effect thinking. In contrast, feminine qualities are cooperation, caring, being and giving, the ability to hold ambivalence, interpersonal skills, independence, faith in the future and synchronicity.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if your workplace were a context in which you could be structured, outgoing and organized but also quirky, dreamy, creative and intuitive? We are not either or but the sum of all our parts and to put it bluntly: the work place has been catering to our male qualities for very long and it’s time to play it another way. We are with you. How can we achieve feminine wisdom at work? We believe the solutions can be many (see how we are being inclusive and holding space for ambivalence?). Our approach consists in applying four principles: • Openness • Wholesomeness • Collaboration • Magic Since I know you are going to ask me anyway, I am going to go ahead and explain each of them, ok? Yes, please! Openness means that we are more transparent and emotionally expressive about what drives us. For instance, most of us do not speak about “dreaming” in the work context, right? It’s something you do in the privacy of your home or after hours. Well, we think it is important to speak about dreaming because dreams are what drive innovation. Every successful business or work project that is now changing lives and making millions of dollars once had to begin as a person’s individual dream. And yet we pretend that businesses spring into existence out of nothing. When we share our successes we tend to leave out all the ups and downs, the fact that we thought about quitting at least 27 times, the self-doubt we have and continue to have regardless of how “successful” we are in societal terms. Driving forward a project is a roller coaster of excitement, heartbreak, euphoria, learning, stillness, courage and reflection, sometimes all at once. If we all communicated about this openly, we would all feel less crazy and we would all be more likely to begin projects that are important to us. CAIROEASTMAG.COM

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Wellbeing

So it’s about accepting the complexity and chaotic nature of life and simply sharing openly, without judgment or that pressure to impress others. Because guess what? Most people are impressed when you dare to be simply you. It tends to give them permission to do the same… We love the sound of this. What is wholesomeness about? Wholesomeness ties in with what we expressed before: that we are the sum of all of our parts. We do not just all have both masculine and feminine qualities; we are complex holistic beings. It is very important that we live in harmony with our body, minds, emotions and hearts. When we accept that everything is interconnected, we are able to make decisions from a space of “what is good for me as a

whole” rather than weighing the pro’s and con’s of having “something great for the CV” versus being miserable. That makes sense. What about collaboration? We already collaborate at work, right? Yes we do, but we believe that we could be doing much more of this! Somehow, there is still this belief engrained in us that we have to do it all on our own. The lone wolf mentality comes out especially when we think of starting a new project or founding an own business. Rather than sharing our dream, we keep it to ourselves out of fear that it might be stolen or copied. We are not saying you shouldn’t watch out for intellectual property theft, but the case is that most dreams die off somewhere in the land of “maybe tomorrow” and “as soon as I learn how to design a website”.

makes you happy. Something that lights you up and makes you grin contagiously. Does that thing have anything to do with work? Most people will answer “no”. We believe that magic is an emotional cocktail that includes love, appreciation, gratitude, awe at the beauty of the present moment and at least one other secret ingredient that we have not identified yet. We all know what magic feels like to us personally. We believe that just by setting the intention, more magic will show up in your every day. Sometimes it is just about what lens you are looking through. We love everything you have been sharing with us. Where can we find out more? I happen to be in love with Egypt and work closely with the wonderful Nūn Center in Zamalek. We are putting together an incredible retreat this coming November in El Gouna

We believe that dreams need supporters in order to become real (work) things, so the sooner we can communicate about them and attract the right people, the sooner we will learn to fly.

Seasonal Sniffles Getting to Know the Flu Virus As the fall and winter seasons approach, so too does the flu season. People sick with the flu often end up staying home, tucked up in bed with a fever, cough, and runny nose. The culprit behind this infection is the Influenza virus, and the infection it causes is commonly known as the ‘flu.’ The illness is usually spread through droplets, which are produced when an infected individual coughs or sneezes. The flu is not the same as the common cold, which is caused by other viruses. Symptoms of the flu tend to start more suddenly, are more severe, and last longer than those of the common cold. Some of the main symptoms of flu include:

appear and up to 7 days after the initial symptoms. So while you are infectious, try not to spread the virus to others.

Consider visiting your doctor if:

You’re 65 years of age or over

You’re pregnant

You have a long-term medical condition

You have a weakened immune system

A flu vaccine is needed every season for two reasons. First, the body’s immune response from vaccination declines over time, so an annual vaccine is needed for optimal protection. Second, because flu viruses are constantly changing, the formulation of the flu vaccine is reviewed each year and sometimes updated to keep up with changing flu viruses. For the best protection, everyone 6 months and older should get vaccinated annually.

You develop chest pain or difficulty breathing

Can I get seasonal flu even though I got a flu vaccine this year?

Your symptoms are getting worse over time or haven’t improved after a week

Yes. There is still a possibility you could get the flu even if you got vaccinated. The ability of flu vaccine to protect a person depends on various factors, including the age and health status of the person being vaccinated, and also the similarity or “match” between the viruses used to make the vaccine and those circulating in the community. If the viruses in the vaccine and the influenza viruses circulating in the community are closely matched, vaccine effectiveness is higher. If they are not closely matched, vaccine effectiveness can be reduced. However, it’s important to remember that even when the viruses are not closely matched, the vaccine can still protect many people.

When to see a doctor?

High grade fever

How to prevent the spread of flu?

Fatigue and weakness

Headache

Muscle or body aches

Minimizing the spread of the virus can be accomplished with good hygiene measures. These include:

Cough

Vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults)

What to do if I get flu? The best remedy is to rest at home, keep warm and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Paracetamol and ibuprofen can be used for fever control and to relieve muscle aches if necessary. Stay off work or school until you are feeling better. For most people, this will take about a week.

Why do I need a flu vaccine every year?

-Washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water -Cleaning surfaces such as your computer keyboard, telephone, and door handles to get rid of germs -Using tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze -Putting used tissues in a bin as soon as possible Taking an annual flu vaccine is another way to help reduce the risk of becoming infected.

It is important to remember that the flu virus is very contagious, and can be spread one day before symptoms CAIROEASTMAG.COM

By Maeri Frances Oh yes, we can heave a sigh of relief, especially if we have our Sun or a load of planets in air signs. Jupiter is celebrating his entry into Libra, so there will be a big focus on relationships and partnerships of all kinds in the months ahead. You have had plenty of opportunities to sort out your stuff and get organized while Jupiter transited earthy Virgo, now you can work on the people factor. Don’t forget to read your rising sign as well; it can have a strong bearing on your month ahead.

Birthday signs

Libra 24 September - 23 October Lovely Libra, this is your time to enjoy the loads of opportunities that keep popping up. Kicking off with a New Moon in Libra on the 1st, the focus is on using this month to the max. Inspiration for boosting finances can also come the same day, so be ready. Good news and a general feeling of wellbeing look likely for the 11th of October, but you may be in such a bubble that you miss a few storm clouds gathering on the horizon. Exercise your famous tact and diplomacy, even with family members.

19th and 29th call for a bit of sensitivity, not always an Aries strong point. Avoid pushing your point across too hard. However, the 26th is a great day for smoothing the path towards anything dear to your heart and business discussions could be fruitful on the 27th.

Taurus 21 April –21 May Health, routine, clothing and work relationships are energised this month. If you had let things slide a bit over the summer this is the month to make up some ground. October starts on quite a romantic note for you, with Venus in your 7th house of relationships. The 1st is a good time for a special date, so mark it in your calendar. The 16th could be a little volatile around the workplace. If you have difference of opinion with a colleague, make your point as calmly as possible. Displays of temper will not win points. On the upside, the 26th could see good news coming through someone who cares about you.

Gemini 22 May –21 June

Aries 21 March –20 April The big story is all about the others in your life this October. Yes, the people who love you; support you... and those who barely tolerate you. The potential for business partnerships as well as romantic ones is strong, but you will need to be willing to give and take, this will not be a one man show. The 5th,

64

61

You have every reason to feel upbeat. Those lovely planets in Libra are working their magic with your love life, and this reverberates with your work mood as well. Even Saturn’s influence in your 7th house can be seen in a positive light, let’s face it, a bit of caution is better than regret at a later stage. You may need to keep a tighter grip on your purse strings; money will simply fly out of your hands while you are in the mood for

having fun. Days to mark in your calendar for special tête-à-têtes should be the 7th, 11th, 18th and 26th of October.

Cancer 22 June –22 July Domestic life, children and creativity are all key for you this month. If you had been postponing plans to do a bit of redecorating this is the time to get cracking. Your taste should be at an all time high, and the results may be better than you had imagined. Special days that stand out are the 1st and 5th. There is potential for happiness and romance, but avoid giving out mixed messages or taking things out of context. At the end of the day any bruised feelings should be taken care of though.

Leo 23 July –22 August It’s time to make the most of your natural charm and way with words. How you communicate and what you communicate can make or break you this month. You may be in the mood for home entertaining, so choose guests who can get a sparkling conversation going. Earmark some fun on the 18th and 26th, these are days when work won’t hold much appeal. If you are feeling restless, try to change the scene by fitting in a short trip here and there, new faces and new places!,

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE Feature

Virgo 23 August –23 September

Sagittarius

Aquarius

23 November –21 December

21 January –19 February

If you spent the last 12 months wisely and used your natural skills constructively then it should reflect in a boost in earnings in the coming period. Communication is highlighted, as well as a fair amount of general running around. The situation on the home front may have been getting you down, too much to do and not enough time or pairs of hands? Make an effort to clear clutter and organize, the boost to your mood will be immense. Best days? The 5th, 11th and 14th.

You are entering a phase when you start to feel more optimistic about long-term aims, and support from friends and peer groups. Saturn has been dealing out some stern lessons for you in the past months, but the experience and maturity gained will pay off. There are still days when you may feel discouraged, but with Jupiter well positioned in your 11th house the prospects for progress look good. The more you involve yourself with group activities, the more rewarding life will become. The 18th and 26th are days that hold a lot of potential. Don’t waste them.

Expect things to open up rather quickly this month. No travel plans? Think again. Be ready to roll with the changes, and they are mostly positive. Take care of your health though, and those you love. The warning for the 19th plays for you too. Even if you don’t become embroiled in a full-fledged battle, you could be the victim of some vicious back-biting. Stay low profile and avoid scheduling important meetings around that date. The 26th and 27th are much better days, catch up with friends and get your career back on track.

Scorpio

Capricorn

Pisces

24 October –22 November

22 December –20 January

20 February –20 March

Things may be looking great on the surface, and Scorpios can always be depended on to maintain a good front can’t they? All sorts of things may be going on behind the scenes, but that is most likely where they will stay. The big reveal will come some time next year. Venus is adding even more charm to your already charismatic personality, so this month should be a bit of a breeze. Key dates for you are the 5th, 24th and 26th when planetary support can help you work towards your goals.

If ambitious Capricorn is ready to amp things up on the career front, this is the month to make a move. Friends are on hand for you, and superiors are willing to give you all the support and opportunities you need. If you can avoid stepping on toes or pushing anyone off the ladder in your clamber to the top you may consider it a month to remember. Avoid confrontations between the 13th and 16th if you can, and the warning triples in volume on the 19th. Why not consider a day in silent meditation? It could be the best option!

Sit back and think about it. Haven’t the past 12 months brought some wonderful, interesting people into your life? They are probably still part of it as well. Now you can feel enriched, not just through those relationships, but through the inner confidence and understanding that you have gained. October can be considered a warm up for a lovely November, where your horizons will likely expand through travel or new friends from distant cultures. Days to tread with caution? The 19th and 29th, when friends may need your help, or may be difficult to handle. CAIROEASTMAG.COM

Things to do around Cairo to make you fall in love with the city all over again! A Walk in Old Cairo Fatimid Cairo is a one of those time travel journeys where every building has a million tales to tell. Walk beside the ancient buildings and feel the beautiful energy while you admire the architecture and wonder what stories these stones may have witnessed. Book Signings Such events are very inspiring; to read a book and discuss it with the author is a very interesting chance to stretch your mind. Sherouk book stores have book clubs in every branch around the city that hold multiple events every month. Diwan also hosts a lot of events and Zee Culture Club has one every month as well in Zayed. Felucca Just being next to the Nile is a heavenly experience. Either rent a felucca from DokDok in Garden City or Maadi Corniche with your friends, or get on one of the luxurious cruises. An experience like no other. Horseback Riding Horses are believed to have very strong positive energy; ranking second after dolphins. Spending time in nature generally, and with horses especially is very good for you. There are plenty of stables in the Sakkara area; all you have to do is search.

Movies Catch a movie every week, buy popcorn and lose yourself in the darkness, merge with the characters, melt in the story, be selfless, be them, live their life for a few hours, feel their feelings, I think we become more human when we watch a movie. Opera House InesAbd El Dayem, the new President of the Opera is doing a great job filling up the schedule with beautiful performances. Don’t miss out; check their schedule regularly. Theater There is some very interesting experimental work taking place by young talents in Al Taliaa theater, Hanager Theater and the National Theater. For example, A Night From One Thousand Nights by the legendary Beiram El Tonsy is a must see, starring the great Yehia El Fakharany. Visiting Craftsmen Visit people who craft with their hands. Try the Wissa Wassef Community in Harraneya, it is beautiful to watch. Hand blown glass, beads, copper and gold workshops display amazing talents that are marvelous to watch. If your heart falls for one craft, follow it, it may just turn into a lifetime hobby.

Visiting Mosques and Churches Amr Ibn El Ass is a place where the doors to the heaven are quite open. Besides its spiritual significance, its architecture is very inspiring, just like all of old Cairo. Churches have beautiful energy and architecture too. Try to visit Marigerges, and the Hanging Church in the Malek El Saleh area. Walks by the Nile Yes, Montaza street, Zamalek, Maadi Corniche, or across the Sheraton. Find your spot and appreciate the beauty around you. Workshops Workshops for self-development are becoming very popular. Nun Centre in Zamalek has a full schedule each month, also OSANA centre in Maadi and the Swiss Club in Kitkat. Mashrabeyet Rafe’ offers beautiful programs for self-development all year round. Yoga And Meditation Wellness centers in many parts of Cairo host yoga sessions. Mariam Sobhy in Beit Maryam does amazing sessions of yoga and Sufi meditation. I really hope that we enjoy our city the way it deserves, the problem is in our style of life, not in the city itself.

Born to Swim

Nagwa Ghorab Sets the Pace We love what our new generation of Egyptian swimmers has been managing these days, but let’s also give our total respect and admiration to an amazing Egyptian swimmer who has been keeping Egypt in the spotlight for decades. Vivacious, sun-kissed and looking nowhere near her years, Nagwa Ghorab shares her journey with Cairo East Magazine. CEM: Nagwa, when and where did you first start swimming? NG: I was born in 1943 so I am now 73 years old. I started swimming when I was four years old. At the time we lived in Heliopolis, and had to make the journey to swim near the Opera House Club because the Heliopolis Sporting Club was only for foreigners in those days. How often did you practise? I adore swimming, and when Heliopolis Sporting Club near our home started accepting Egyptians I did my training there every day. The trainers predicted that through my special style I would one day become a backstroke champion. I stopped swimming after marriage to give my time to family life, raising children and work. I started again after retiring to realize my dream, even with the passing of the years the champion spirit was strong and alive … waiting to start again! I went back to swimming every day for about two hours, and I was lucky and relieved to have maintained my fitness. When did you start entering competitions? In my youth I was an Egyptian champion with very high records, then went back to competing when I was 64 years old. What do you enjoy most about swimming? Oh my dear, the feel of the water is magnificent. When I came back to swimming I wanted to realize my dream to compete with foreigners. It is great to gauge your own abilities by competing with other strong swimmers. When competing in

70

67

Europe I would immediately check the screen when I touched the end, the elation of doing well was unmatchable. Being a champion was something instilled in my very being. Do you still swim regularly? Yes, my life is geared around swimming. Five days a week I start with a training swim of around 2 km, followed by about two hours of very organized training. I take a break of two days every week to relax my muscles. How many countries have you visited and competed in? First Turkey, then Sweden, France, Italy, Austria, Germany, Canada, Russia and recently the USA. The national competitions are always the most important though; there you gain the title of champion. In foreign countries you receive the title of winner. What medals have you won? Each time I competed in France I collected three medals, for second and third place, and valuable medals from world championship in Montreal, Canada 2014. In Russia in 2015 I won five medals and was rated

third in the world. When I competed in the USA national championship this year I won three medals, one of them for second place in 50 yards backstroke with a time of 48.60 seconds. Medals were also awarded for my 5th and 6th placing in the 100 yards backstroke and 50 yard freestyle. Is swimming a sport that everyone can benefit from, and how? Yes sure. A swimmer can practice at any age because the water supports him or her. In world championships I meet all ages, even 90 years old and more. How do you see the prospects for Egyptian women in sport? I strongly believe that Egyptian women in sport are on a level to compete with the whole world... God bless Egypt!

Cherry Berry Chai is not only delicious, colorful and refreshing, but also quite nutritious. Cherries are a great source of vitamin A, full of antioxidants to help improve immunity and heart health and also reduce cholesterol. Raspberries,

another vital ingredient used in the drink, are surprisingly a very strong fat burner that helps take care of the skin. Earl Grey tea is not like any other tea, it reduces stress, helps relieve toothaches and helps lower the risk of heart disease. Here is how to make an easy Cherry Berry Chai at home: •

Boil water. Pour boiled water into a pitcher and seep tea bags for 8-10 minutes.

Remove tea bags. Chill covered for about 1-2 hours, or until cold.

tartar with a red pepper sorbet and spume basilica are among the most popular dishes served on a daily basis. Dishes sampled: As we was sat down at our table we were welcomed with a spoon of carrot, and jelly of red pepper that was the perfect introduction for what was to follow. Our appetizer was on the highest level of freshness, the tomato feta and cucumber had a seasonal mix of colored yellow, red, and green tomatoes, sliced cucumber, feta cheese, spume infused with thyme, ice sorbet and soy vinaigrette. Every bite was truly an adventure.

Then came the main course. We were blown away by the perfectly grilled teriyaki sirloin wagyu (beef ) that had been marinating for 24 hours in soy and sake, making it absolutely divine. It was coupled with a carrot puree and different multi-colored carrots that really brought out the meat’s flavour. We couldn’t miss out on the seafood menu so we went for the roasted shrimp on plancha baby eggplants, and a degaku sauce that is a traditional Japanese sauce based on miso, mirini, and sugar. The presentation was impeccable, the fusion sensation and exotic ingredients all came together in perfect harmony.

Before we got into dessert we were served crispy baladi bread with goat cheese, black sesame and miso paste. It was an epic mixture of cultures from French, to Egyptian, to Japanese. Then came a beautifully presented fresh strawberry salad, with balsamic vinaigrette, sweet peppers, chili red pepper sorbet, and basil spume. It was mouth-watering to say the least the sweetness of the peppers and the sourness of the sorbet were a combination made in heaven. The white chocolate-raspberry parfait was the winner of the night. The smoothness of the chocolate mousse, and the tanginess of the flowing raspberry heart give it a superb punch full of flavor. Other menu options that appealed: Next time we’re back we will be sure to try the baked salmon fillet, with kimpira, a traditional Japanese vegetable and crustacean seafood vinaigrette. Ambiance: The venue gently rocks as boats pass by, you can see the city lights shining and also spot the occasional felucca sparkling away as you dine at night Décor: We were given tablets to browse the menu, it was brilliant as we got to see images of each plate before ordering. It is a modern-chic, hi-tech, interactive open and airy space, a perfect getaway in the heart of the city. Clientele mix: The atmosphere can fit a romantic date or friends getting together and catching up.
