Abla Opens Up to Cairo East Magazine On Motherhood, Crossing All Lines, and More! By Shorouk Abbas and Hana Nassar

When Cairo East Magazine called Abla Fahita she was on a boat in Aswan as part of her initiative for domestic travel, along with 22 women from the group Korba Association for Widows and Divorcees. Abla found a few minutes to give our interruption the privilege of being honored with her attention. Here are her answers to a few questions‌

“I was born different, I knew I should expect the unexpected, so I’m not surprised or humbled easily, you don’t know me?”

CEM: Why do they call you “Abla”? AF: Abla Fahita is the name of my first YouTube video, it kind of stuck ever after, maybe it was the push that gave me the right to be Abla (the teacher) for the grownups. So you better behave, Abla is here. After the death of your husband, and with all the men who are after you, are you planning to remarry? Not at all, I was married at least once and I know, there is a pleasure in an open buffet that you cannot compare. You keep on trying different dishes, it’s never fun getting stuck with one thing on your plate forever. As a wonderful mother, what is your strategy in raising Carcoura? I believe girls should be taught the hard way so they grow up tough and strong in a testosterone-ruled society. I sent her to boys’ schools, and I treat her like a bad stepmotherbut deep inside she’s my daughter and that’s something I cannot change. Caro Carcoura is a piece of my heart… sometimes. What does Abla Fahita fear the most? I don’t fear much, fear doesn’t take you anywhere nice. I’ve learnt that, and now I’m teaching it on t-shirt quotes #yehedo_elkhouf #yehedo_elghabaa - but again you never know how dumb they can get. The dumb ones breed faster, and also fear looking older than Ghada Ragab. What is your favorite song? ‘I Will Survive’ by El Sabbouha - it’s always playing in my head when something bad happens. Who dresses you? Who is your favorite designer? After Krikor Jabotian and Cherbel Zoe, Hany El Beheiry is my latest designer, he’s chasing any designer who gets close to me - he’s really protective but I’m a widow and I’ve got my needs. My favorite is Coco, she Chaneled the whole world. Who does your hair? When Glovise is not having a nervous breakdown it’s Richard pronounced Richaaar…

Since you wear very expensive jewelry, who is your favorite designer? I accept all kinds of gifts from fashion and jewelry designers, and once I wear them I tag them and make them famous. Nihal Zaki gave me a beautiful session, I hardly recognized myself, but she had something against Caro. (Abla Fahita starts chatting with others in the background then comes again to the phone), sorry what was I saying … yess. I would love Azza Fahmy to make me a jewelry line with my jewelry sayings. Or at least she should start by sending me gifts; she is a smart woman and knows who to gift something special to win them over. Did you ever see it coming? That you were going to be this famous? I was born different, I knew I should expect the unexpected, so I’m not surprised or humbled easily, you don’t know me? I thought you knew me, everyone knows me, it’s known! Where do you like traveling the most? My late husband, may God bless my soul, showed me the world. I remember Amsterdam and Ibiza were our favorites; it may be where we conceived Caro and Boudi… crazy times… my late husband - may he rest forever late - was my captain into the world of traveling, him the captain and me the stewardess, and when I did something wrong he would pull the mask and ... oh how do I miss his distinguished kinkiness. What’s your favorite word? Bekh When you sang “Mayestahlushi” who were you referring to? I dedicate this song to all those who don’t deserve my attention: oxymoronic as I like it. I had to let it out of my system, so I put it all in a song so I don’t have to think about them anymore. I’m a widow and I know! Your shield is your indifference, even if it takes a bit of time. Eventually you’ll be people proof.

“I don’t fear much, fear doesn’t take you anywhere nice.”

What are your future plans? I’m always open to suggestions. An intelligent widow knows it best, the future is always ahead of you, but its seeds are planted now, so seeds the moment, (she chuckles). And as Odetta always says, “My near future depends on my present state, so bring me that slice,” me too. I don’t compromise on my now - it’s all in how you take things in, so I never did. You too find something to be happy about. You sound depressed habibti… go dye your hair.

Are you planning to go international? I am international already. Small international maybe, but I was covered by BBC, Time magazine, from Deutcsh to Dutch and CCTV in between. Still need working on my translated humor to be able to help more desperate English-understanding people around the world. Do you improvise before each episode? I improvise when I have to, my life is properly improvised. Do you have red lines that you cannot cross? I’ve crossed all kinds of colored lines, sometimes unintentionally - but it will always be a struggle, between what you want to say and who will judge it. I see it as an extra spice for living on the edge. Are these all the questions? Ya Susu - tub yalla, I have to go introduce the girls to the local scouting team! yehedeha filling the generation gap.. Yehedaha el spelling mistakes! As we leave this amazing diva we plan to follow her news on: @ablafahita on: facebook/ instagram/twitter/ youtube

She taught me that discipline in work is 50% of the job and the rest is a combination of persistence, determination and faith. I owe every single bit of success to her.”

“My mom has always been my idol and main source of inspiration. Growing up with such a great influence made me realize that women are not weak or vulnerable, contrary to how most of our society thinks! She taught me how to be strong, how to stand up for my beliefs and how to never let go of my dreams, no matter what. She taught me the importance of not relying on anyone but myself in most of the things that I do. She was and still is my biggest supporter; I like to consult her before each and every project. My mom is my Wonder Woman and I hope to always make her proud because she truly deserves it.”

“Our mother believed in us no matter who or what we decided to become. She has raised us to be true to ourselves, to give back, and most importantly, to never forget the miracles God can send our way. As we never studied fashion design, she made sure not to discourage us by saying, ‘Girls, remember that it doesn’t matter what you studied or where. What matters is how talented you are and how badly you want it. If there’s passion, there’s a way. If there’s love, there’s magic.’ Until this day, she is our strongest and most important idol. Her perception, attention to detail and constructive criticism makes her invaluable and a major driving force in my life. Above all, she has always motivated, guided and supported me in making my own decisions.”

“My mother has played a huge role in who I am today and whoever I will become in the future.

“What I credit my mother most for is teaching me independence. From a young age, she would show my siblings and I how to manage for ourselves. A strong urge I still have at work, to not let others stand in our way. She also gave me a passion for adventure and discovery. We travelled the world together and although I moaned about the endless museums and cathedrals, it did teach me to seek out wonders and achievement.”

For as long as I can remember she has been teaching me what hard work is, how to respect those around you, and that there is a very fine line between right and wrong. These are all lessons I use by default in my daily life in business as well as personally, they are the foundations of my actions and my decisions. I owe an insurmountable debt to my mother, and knowing that she’s proud of me assures me that I’m on the right track.”

“My mother has always been my sanity and insanity advisor! She’s always pushing me to get out of my comfort zone.Maybe one of the most important things I learned from her is to always let go of pictures and the tendency to visualize everything! As human beings we tend to visualize our goals to achieve them but most of the time our achievement is never what we ‘pictured’ which leads to constant dissatisfaction and disappointment. She always told me that if we cut this cycle early on and stop ‘picturing’ things all together from the beginning, we’d get a lot faster to the sense of satisfaction and achievement.”

Not because she couldn’t find babysitting, but because she wanted me to learn something new and ‘broaden my horizons’. She would then tell me ‘Taymour, we can’t let school get in the way of your education’. “I am a professional self-taught photographer who envisions life and its attributes, creating mood, sensation and beauty with images through the lenses of my camera. Born in Cairo, I sense a spirit of desert and sun along with the magical essence of Egyptian culture and its great history; thinking snaps of such beauty would be the road to my dream. CEM: Khaled, how did it all start? KA: In my childhood I used to be the one behind the camera for all family events, with just a simple film camera. The funny thing is, I never dreamed of becoming a photographer, although it has always been my hobby since childhood. The turning point was when I worked as a marketing manager of a group of companies. One of them was a photography company. Life got to start when I was in charge of putting together a marketing strategy for hiring international photographers to carry out work in Egypt. I started working very closely with them, and it was only then that I decided to shift my career to become a professional photographer. I followed those photographers everywhere, travelling here and there, and I joined their workshops. I got some deals in Egypt, after which I established my own photography agency in Dubai. Later, I launched my courses sponsored by international photography equipment companies i.e (PROFOTO), MANFROTTO and ADVANCED MEDIA LLC. Being interviewed by so many local and international media channels, I was inspired to start my own TV segment Yalla Tasweer on MBC Dubai TV, during the morning show Good Morning Arabs with the aim of teaching people at home how to enjoy photography with affordable stuff, without using expensive equipment. There was another season for kids aged 4 to 9 years, followed by a special season for Special Needs Photography.

Do you only travel to photograph? I travel to meet people, to learn about cultures, and to use my photography as a window for people to get to know each other better. As a photographer, I travel to exhibit and sell my works, to take new shots, and finally to teach courses and take people on photo trips. I have been to Tibet, the Himalayas, India, London, Italy, Turkey, Jordan, and Oman. I have a different story for every place. I was in London, for example, to receive my award during the London Biennale 2015. Tell us about your Biennale award and how you came to receive it? London Biennale is one of the most prominent art events where contemporary artworks from around 40 different nations are present in the same place, showcasing artists who exhibit in some of the most important galleries in the world. I won two awards: first place in photography, and third place in digital art photography. In addition to that, I gave a workshop on photojournalism in Chelsea Old Town Hall, which was attended by 153 artists from all over the world.

From the photographs you have taken, do you have a favorite? I have one photo called “Time”, which is a portrait of an 85-year old woman, and an Egyptian tanoura shot that received an award during Chianciano Biennale 2013 in Tuscany, Italy. How do you pass on your skills and knowledge to budding photographers? In addition to the many courses I cover in Dubai, I will be running a photography course in Egypt this

May, for the third time. This will enable participants to learn about both the technical and artistic aspects of the field. Registration can be made through my website: www.khaledabuldahab.com. Dealing with Learning Difficulties By Dr Amira El Batrawy

Even the most experienced parents can have anxious moments during their child’s formative years. What is the benchmark, they wonder? Is my child developing skills and cognition at a normal rate? Let’s look at the important points and the most commonly voiced concerns. CEM: At what age can you consider a child has a learning difficulty? AB: Not all kids develop learning skills at the same rate, but learning difficulty may appear as early as preschool years (e.g., difficulty learning names of letters or counting objects), but they can only be diagnosed reliably after starting formal education. What tests are carried out to ascertain what type of problem exists? Learning disability is a clinical diagnosis, it can be identified by psychiatrists, school psychologists, clinical psychologists, and other learning disability specialists through a combination of intelligence testing, academic achievement testing and class performance monitoring. Other areas of assessment may include perception, cognition, memory, attention, and language abilities, through tests measuring the executive functions of the brain.

What are the main problems you encounter? The main problems seen in our clinics are difficulties related to reading, writing and math, mostly reading. This is always associated with academic deterioration and poor performance in school, with frequent complaints from the teachers. Many children have behavioral problems as well. What are the critical ages in children’s development when they most need assistance? Preschool years, especially 3-5 years of age, are considered the main critical age of development that needs assistance otherwise the problem will be much more devastating as long as the child grows. How do you tackle the various issues?

How do you differentiate between a slow learner and a child with a deep problem such as dyslexia?

Parents are considered one of the cornerstones of management of such problems and they should be a crucial part in the management plan all through.

A slow learner is a child of below average intelligence, whose thinking skills have developed significantly more slowly than the norm for his/her age. This child will go through the same basic developmental stages as other children, but will do so at a significantly slower rate. On the other hand, a child with specific learning disability is one of average or above average intelligence who has specific difficulties, which can make learning very difficult. In short, if there is a discrepancy between the child’s potential and actual achievement.

Does nutrition play a role in helping some conditions such as ADHD?

How can a parent tell a difference between hyperactivity and ADHD?

There’s no clear scientific evidence that ADHD is caused by diet or nutritional problems or that eating special kinds of food may help in relieving some symptoms.

Hyperactivity could be a normal finding in children, but it is considered to be a problem when it affects their functions, mainly their academic performance and social development.

Proper history taking, not only from the parents but from the school teachers as well, is very important together with ongoing clinical and psychological assessment of the child. Do you involve the parents in the remedial process, and to what extent?

Do you make recommendations regarding lifestyle adjustments? Yes, of course, scheduling and structured daily activities for those children are very important. Also involving the child in activities and sports that help increasing attention and concentration may help.

What are the signs that indicate that the child needs therapy? Communication skill problems, language and speech problems, behavioral problems, as well as academic deterioration are all considered signs that necessitate

immediate intervention. Is dyslexia a big umbrella under which a lot of other learning difficulties fall? A reading disorder is the most common learning disability. Of all students with specific learning disabilities, 70–80% have deficits in reading. The term ‘developmental dyslexia’ is often used as a synonym for reading disability; however, many researchers assert that there are different types of reading disabilities, of which dyslexia is one. It is a common word, frequently used to describe learning disability in general, but scientifically, this is not what is actually present.

Bodyweight exercises increase self-awareness and improve body movement. They

can be progressed and regressed to fit everyone. The best part about it is they can be done everywhere. You can use them for strength gain and muscle gain, and you can put them together to form a circuit for conditioning and fat burning. They translate well from the gym to real life, as you’ll increase your ‘relative strength’: how strong you are relative to your own body weight. Using your body weight for workout will guarantee benefits like: • • •

Increased strength Increased muscle Increased self-esteem

• • •

Increased energy Increased athleticism Increased coordination

These are some of the best exercises using your body weight for workout:

2 - The Bodyweight Squat 1- Walkouts Walkouts build strength in your anterior core. 1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Bend your knees slightly (or more if needed) and place both hands flat on the ground. 2. Keeping your legs extended and your feet planted, walk your hands away from your body, as far past your shoulders as you can, until you are in a full plank position. Hold for one count at the furthest point, and then walk your hands back to your feet and slowly return to standing.

50

47

• This is a lower body strengthening exercise that can be performed virtually anywhere with no equipment and limited space. It’s a highly functional movement working all the major muscles of the legs. 1. Keeping your entire foot pressed into the floor, push through the outside of each foot as you lower into your squat. 2. When you have lowered down into the bodyweight squat, your kneecaps should hover over the tops of your feet. Your torso should lean forward slightly, creating a 30 to 45 degree angle with your thighs. • 3. When you start to rise from the bottom of your squat, actively push your knees out. Your thighs should stay in line with your feet. • Instead of just dropping down and standing back up, focus on feeling your glutes throughout the entire bodyweight squat. As you lower, feel them stretch. As you stand, forcefully contract them.

3 - Plank with Arm Lift 1. Start in the same plank position (photo 1) as above.

4. Hold 3 seconds while keeping your core tight.

2. Carefully shift your weight to your right forearm.

5. Slowly bring your arm back to starting position.

3. Extend your left arm straight out in front of you.

6. Switch arms and repeat.

Do 2 - 3 sets of 10 reps

4 - Bodyweight Walking Lunge Walking lunges are great for lifting and shaping your backside. They are a great way for you to tone the butt and get that kind of shelf butt. Normally you can’t really spot reduce and it’s hard to really tone specific muscle groups, but this exercise works for just that. 1. Stand straight with your feet shoulder width apart and place your hands on your hips. This is the start position. 2. Step forward with either leg in a long stride. Keep your other foot in place behind you. 3. Bend your knees as you do this so your body is lowered towards the ground. Keep your back straight throughout the movement. 4. Continue down until your front knee is just above the ground. (Your front leg should be bent 90 degrees at the knee) 5. Hold for a count of one. 6. Push down through your front heel and extend both knees to return to the start position. 7. Pause then repeat with your other leg. When you have lunged with both legs that is one repetition. 8. Repeat. 5 - Bird dog Abs The bird dog is a great overall core exercise that, not only strengthens the abs and back, but also mainly involves back rotators/multifarious muscles and also engages the glutes, improves balance and stability. 1. Begin on hands and knees with the back straight and the abs pulled in. 2. Lift the right arm up until it is level with the body and parallel to the floor. 3. At the same time, lift the left leg up and straighten it until it is also parallel to the floor. 4. Hold for a moment, lower and repeat on the other side, this time lifting the left arm and right leg. Continue alternating sides for 1-3 sets of 10-16 reps. 5. Keep the move slow and controlled and try to keep your body straight throughout the movement. CAIROEASTMAG.COM

6 - Bodyweight Triceps • Toning your triceps — the muscles that run on the backside of your upper arm, from your shoulder to your elbow — is one way to easily tone your arms. A basic body-weight exercise, triceps dips don’t require much equipment: if you don’t have a bench, you can always do them on the ground. • Here’s how to do this move: 1. Position your hands shoulder-width apart on a secured bench or stable chair. 2. Slide your butt off the front of the bench with your legs extended out in front of you. 3. Straighten your arms, keeping a little bend in your elbows to keep tension on your triceps and off your elbow joints. 4. Slowly bend your elbows to lower your body toward the floor until your elbows are at about a 90-degree angle. Be sure to keep your back close to the bench. 5. Once you reach the bottom of the movement, press down into the bench to straighten your elbows, returning to the starting position. This completes one rep. 6. Keep your shoulders down as you lower and raise your body. You can bend your legs to modify this exercise. • Do 15 to 20 reps per set and aim to do two to three sets

7 - Bicycle Crunch • The Bicycle Crunch is the best abs exercise according to research done to uncover the best exercises you can do to activate the rectus abdominus, the external oblique and internal oblique. 1. Lie flat on the floor with your lower back pressed to the ground and contract your core muscles. 2. With your hands gently holding your head, lift your knees to about a 45-degree angle. 3. Slowly, at first, go through a bicycle pedal motion. 4. Alternately touching your elbows to the opposite knees as you twist back and forth. 5. Breathe evenly throughout the exercise. 8 - Push up Intensifies work on upper body and core. • Do a normal pushup, but with your feet elevated on a stable platform like a box or bench. • The higher the platform, the more you’ll work your shoulders, chest, core, and scapular stabilizers. • The muscles that connect: your neck, midback, and shoulders.

9 - Mountain climber This is a full body work out and here are a few of the muscles that are worked: deltoids, biceps, triceps, pectorals major, obliques, rectus abdominals, lower trapezes, latissimus dorsi, quadriceps, hamstrings, hip adductors, and hip abductors. 1. Get into a plank position. Get down on the floor on your hands and knees. Extend your legs out behind you 2. Pull one knee up and in toward your midsection. Lift one foot and begin bending the knee as you pull it up between the front of your body and the floor. Bring the knee forward in one smooth, controlled motion. Don’t let either of your knees sag or come into contact with the floor. Once you’ve raised your knee as far as you can, contract and hold your abs briefly but forcefully. 3. Repeat the action with your other knee. Relax your midsection and push your knee back toward your other foot slowly. Straighten your leg and set your foot back on the ground behind you. Then, bring the other knee forward, moving fluidly and squeezing your abs.

How to Wake Up and Stay Up Nutritionist and Chef Reeham Shaker Shares Her Tips

Do you feel run down and exhausted all day? Do you hit that snooze button repeatedly in the morning, feeling challenged to get out of bed? Sadly, we struggle daily with the feeling of fatigue since we rely extensively on caffeine and sugar to get us through the day.

54

51

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE WELLBEING

Follow these simple tips to kick your energy level up: Eat the right food: A balanced meal that includes whole grains, lean protein, low-fat dairy, vegetables and fiber-rich fruits such as pear, strawberries, avocados and apples will provide you with the fuel to get through the day. Eating whole grains like those in oatmeal or wholegrain bread takes longer to digest, and balances the body energy as it provides a steady release of fuel. Never skip breakfast: Breakfast is an extra important meal as it affects your energy level throughout the day. Meals packed with fiber and protein keep your tummy feeling full and blood sugar steady. Try to eat your breakfast as early as possible, usually within an hour of waking up, as waiting until 10 am or 11 am will be too late.

If you are not into drinking water, try flavoring your water with sliced cucumber, mint, strawberry or lemon. Go easy on caffeine: When people start drinking several cups of coffee each day, they start to notice a weakened reaction as their coffees have less effect over time, why is that? Caffeine gives a false rush of energy, after repeated doses of caffeine, your adrenals become less able to respond adequately to those doses, so simply your body starts to experience both fatigue and insomnia. If you have to drink it then add some milk, and limit your intake to one cup daily till you gradually cut it back. Exercise: Lots of studies show that women who exercise feel more energetic than others who don’t, the body releases a feel good hormone when people exercise, the energy levels rise and sleep improves. Go out with energetic friends:

Start your day with whole-wheat cereal with milk, or top your yogurt with some granola and nuts for longer lasting satiety.

Enthusiastic friends make you feel happy, optimistic and energetic, stay away from negative people as they totally suck the energy out of you.

Avoid simple carbs and sugar:

Breathe

Eating sweets can make the blood sugar spike as it gives an energy boost instantly then drops a short time later, leading to an energy crash with you feeling more wiped out, hungry and tired. So, simply stay away from the vending machine.

It is important to make some time for yourself during your day. Doing some breathing exercises can calm your mind and reduce your stress.

Drink lots of water: Dehydration can cause fatigue, having an adequate amount of water through the day will boost energy and lower feelings of tiredness. The recommended daily water intake is 12 cups for men and 8 to 10 cups for women. Carry a bottle of water anywhere you go and keep filling it up. Never drink all of the recommended amount at once, sipping through the day will be better for your body.

When you breathe, your cells get enough oxygen, which supplies them with fuel to remove toxic waste and the result is more energy for you. Have a sleep routine: It’s important to follow a constant sleep schedule, the earlier you try to get to bed, the better you will feel throughout your day. The best time to go to bed is at 10 pm, to wake up at 6 am. This is because the stress hormone starts to drop and your brain starts to produce a sleep chemical called melatonin during those hours.

Snack healthfully: Eat a smart snack to get an energy boost even when you’re not hungry. A simple apple is a great energyboosting snack that satisfies your sugar cravings and provides the body with vitamin C and fiber, also almonds, peanuts and nuts are an excellent protein snack that can increase energy levels. A tablespoon of peanut butter, or any other nut butter on whole wheat bread can help you push through the day. Prepare your own homemade energy bar by mixing a nut butter with some seeds and oats, this power combo of protein and antioxidants will keep you focused at work. Go for a walk, ideally in the sun: Walking boosts energy and decreases tension. For an extra boost, walk in the morning to be exposed to sunlight as the sunshine vitamin named Vitamin D balances your mood. Any deprivation from sun-light makes people feel physically tired and depressed. A vitamin D deficiency is characterized as levels that fall below 50 nanograms per milliliter, so 15 minutes exposure to sunlight every day will do the trick. Reduce Your Stress: Everybody has some pressure in their lives. Introducing more relaxing activities throughout the day might be the trick. Try listening to your favorite band, chitchat with a friend or watch a comedy movie, this will reduce the tension, and increase the energy levels. Eat foods rich in vitamin B such as bananas, legumes, turkey, tuna, cottage cheese, eggs, sweet potato, nuts, dates and mushrooms. This vitamin works with the brain chemistry helping it to cope with stress and anxiety, any deficiency in this particular vitamin can cause irritability, mood disturbance and insomnia.

whining? Drop it, turn on some music and just dance, the more happy you feel, the less the tension in your life. Fatigue breaks us down emotionally and drains our energy, make it a priority to have both good time sleep and proper nutrition, they will both improve the quality of life and keep the body alert. Finally don’t forget to laugh, it lightens up stress and boosts your mood - remember that happiness should be your number one priority.

No Bake Granola Energy Bar

Pour mixture into a baking dish greased with oil. Spread into an even layer, and firmly press down with your clean hands. Refrigerate for 3 hours or until firm. Slice into bars and store in the refrigerator in an airtight container with wax paper separating the layers, or individually wrapped in plastic wrap.

Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cup oats • 1/2 cup raisins • 1/2 cup toasted almonds • 1/4 cup coconut flakes • 1/4 cup sliced dried apricots • 1/2 cup peanut butter • 1/2 cup honey • Pinch of cinnamon

• 2 tablespoons flax seeds (optional)

53

In a medium pot set over low heat, melt together peanut butter and honey, stirring until smooth. Remove from stove and stir in oats, cinnamon, almonds, apricots, raisins, coconut flakes and flax seed if using.

Oats are incredibly nutritious. Whole oats are rich in antioxidants and a soluble fiber called beta-glucan. They can lower cholesterol levels and aid in weight loss. Here’s a fun way to get kids and adults to eat more oats.

Our Birthday Sign:

Pisces: As March opens you may be in a dreamy state of mind, not unusual for Pisces we might add. By the second week however, you may burst into action, mainly to clear up any financial muddle that seems to have landed on your plate. The 12th of March may not have you feeling your best, just be patient and things should brighten up within a few days. A windfall of sorts is possible around the 25th, or news that can boost your earning potential.

Aries: March kicks off with the Moon in your birth sign, putting you once more firmly in the driver’s seat. Your input is called for, and you will be ready to give it. Take care around the 3rd however, when something promised looks too good to be true, it probably is. By the 5th you should be back on track, and when your ruling planet Mars enters your sector of earnings a few days later your energies will be directed to building up your reserves again. By the final week of the month you will see the big picture more clearly.

March Stars - 2017 It’s time to take stock and see how things stand after last month’s two eclipses. February was a real game changer, but that can work to our advantage if we know how to keep an open mind and a positive outlook. Let’s see what March has in store. P.S. Don’t forget, your rising sign plays a big role, so check that out as well if you know it. March Birthdays: Ahmed El Sakka (Actor) March 1st, Elham Shaheen (Actress) March 3rd, Mahmoud Abdel Razek Fadlallah (Footballer) commonly known as Shikabala, March 5th, Yousra (Actress) March 10th, Mohamed Abdel Wahab (Composer), March 13th, Bassem Youssef (Doctor, Satirist) March 21st.

Taurus:

Yousra, March 10th

The first three days of March offer a chance to get the month cracking at a good pace. The major theme in the first couple of weeks will be largely about how you interact with your circle of friends. Romantic issues remain private; maybe you are not willing to share what is going on in your heart? The 7th looks good for social activities, so jot it down in your calendar. Expect life to get a whole lot busier when Mars romps into your birth sign on the 10th, amp up your energy levels!

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE FEATURE

Gemini: If there has ever been a month when you can benefit from networking, this is it. It seems that your career potential and who you know are linked in more ways than one. Misconceptions could arise around the 4th, so be as transparent as possible. On the upside, your creative and most inspired self could be in plain view on the same date. Try to get together with friends, or enjoy something community related around the 18th, it could be more fun than you imagined.

Cancer: You may be feeling a bit restless, with an urge to take off somewhere exotic for a change of scene. If circumstances don’t permit, then heave a sigh and throw yourself wholeheartedly into whatever work is at hand. Someone close to you could give you the practical support and confidence boost you need to achieve something major during the first week of March and the 18th could see you feeling on top of the world. Avoid arguments around the 24th if possible though; the damage could take a while to patch up.

Leo: Planetary energy in Aries suits you; all that fire energy has you in action mode. You will need to play things a little more carefully after the 10th when the passage of Mars into your solar 10th house makes you assertive when it comes to getting ahead. It could also indicate a run-in with an authority figure, so swallow your pride if need be. An attraction to something, or someone with exotic appeal could spice up the 25th for you.

Virgo: It may seem that everyone else is

calling the shots this month, but don’t let it get to you. Try to go with the flow, and be as cooperative as possible. You may need to review your finances, clear up any outstanding bills if possible to free the way for more enjoyable pursuits in following months. It is a good month for learning new skills and expanding your knowledge, so if time allows, why not sign up for a course in something that interests you?

you don’t ignore your own health and wellbeing in the process. Keep to a healthy diet, and don’t take on more than you can really manage. You could be in a creative frame of mind, so why not put your home decorating ideas into play with a new look for spring? Make the most of good constructive energy around the 5th; it’s a good day for getting things done.

Capricorn: Libra: Your best course of action this March will probably be to buckle down and focus on work, and your closest relationships. The world will continue on its own path, so let your focus become less about the big picture and more about your immediate circle. Married Libras should invest in quality time with their special someone, and singles might find a relationship rapidly becoming more serious. There could be news on this front around the 28th, but don’t get too carried away on the 30th.

Scorpio: Use this month to get into a good steady routine for work, health and fitness. You may have slipped a bit recently, so make up for it now. Your close relationships could either be invigorating, or a source of friction if someone pushes your buttons a bit too hard. Aim to keep your temper in check, after all your self-control is renowned. With the Sun spending much of the month in your sector of creativity, hobbies, children, and romance, make sure you keep some time for the fun side of life as well.

Your natural talent for being well-organized will be your strong suit this March. There will be a lot of communication and running around, on top of keeping the home running like a well-oiled wheel. “So, what’s new?” You may ask. Mars in your 5th house of kids, sport, recreation and creative pursuits may see you looking for ways to burn off some energy. Maybe a new gym class or some family-based outdoor activities to make the most of the spring weather? Your best days are the 9th and 27th, when your intuition and insight work in your favor.

Aquarius: There’s a lot you would like to get done this month, and it all takes cash. You have a busy month ahead, with a few wild cards to handle, but hey, Aquarians love the unexpected, right? The 18th is the best day for making important calls or asking favors, and generally the 3rd week of March will be the most productive. If you set the wheels in motion early, things should fall into place by then. The last day of March however needs to be handled with caution; a show of too much confidence could trip you up.

Sagittarius: The focus seems to fall largely on your home, domestic life and children this March. Expect to be kept really busy, just make sure that CAIROEASTMAG.COM

What sort of mom are you? Too strict, too soft, or just right? Take a look at the typical parenting style of each star sign and see how you fit. Aries March 21st - April 19th Busy Aries moms like to keep parenting as streamlined as possible. That means certain rules and a fair amount of discipline, along with bursts of spontaneous affection. Children are encouraged to be independent and resourceful, and make the most of opportunities. Not overly protective, an Aries mom often looks forward to the day when the fledglings can safely leave the nest. Taurus April 20th - May 20th All the creature comforts will be provided for their little ones, with lots of cuddles, but mom will not stand for defiance or naughty behavior. There will be clear and definite rules as to how the house is run, and everyone should know their place. The teenage years are often challenging, for mom and child; as being a fixed sign, Taurus can be a tad inflexible as a parent. Gemini May 21st - June 20th There’s no doubt her kids will have to learn to cope with her multifaceted personality. Blowing from hot to cold, involved to detached, Gemini mom will demand enough personal space for her own interests. She will, however, introduce her offspring to a world of diverse and fascinating ideas to explore. Cancer June 21st - July 22nd The sign ruling motherhood, the Cancer mom is a natural. Protective, nurturing, self-sacrificing, she goes the extra mile to ensure her children are well-fed and cared for. No one can kiss away a bump or scrape better than a Cancer mom. No wonder so many sons of Cancer moms refuse to leave the comforts of home. Prone to being possessive, she could also be the mother-in-law from hell. Leo July 23rd - August 22nd Definitely queen of her jungle, the

60

57

Leo mom expects to be the center of her children’s universe. She wants to be proud of them, so they need to meet her expectations. Lavish with gifts, she believes her child must have the best, and she will indulge them as often as she can. They should never try to outshine her though, that would never work! Virgo August 23rd – September 22nd Although not always drawn to motherhood, with all that noise and mess to keep tidying up, Virgo nonetheless will make an effort to be a conscientious mom. That means carefully researched parenting methods, a healthy diet and a rigorous education. Tots may not always feel cosseted, apart from special moments when Virgo mom relaxes and shows her tenderness. Libra September 23rd - October 22nd Sociable Libra will make sure her kids are introduced to the party circuit as soon as they are out of nappies. They will be trained to have impeccable manners from an early age, and should have a welldeveloped dress sense by the time they hit nursery school. Children will be taught to keep their rooms neat and attractive as well. The Libra mom’s partner will always come first though, so her children will be taught to respect and obey Daddy at all times. Scorpio October 23rd - November 21st Intense and secretive Scorpio moms are not always the most demonstrative when it comes to showing their feelings, but should anyone threaten their child, they will be a force to reckon with. Their strong personalities can be challenging for offspring who want to assert their own points of view, but any child who has survived the course will be well-equipped to take on the world at large. Sagittarius November 22nd - December 21st Not the most domesticated of signs,

Sagittarian moms have their own brand of parenting. To compensate for a sometimes-chaotic home and a few too many fast-food meals, there will be no shortage of fun excursions and family adventures in exotic locations. Learning will be valued, not just in the classroom, but also in the school of life. Truthfulness will be valued and instilled at an early age. Capricorn December 22nd - January 19th Pragmatic Capricorn moms usually have their kids’ route to fame and fortune mapped out before they leave the delivery suite. They will also be given a good grounding in how to handle finances and use resources wisely. Naturally frugal, Capricorn moms will teach their tots to take care of what they have, and avoid waste. They do have a soft and tender side, and can often be counted on for great bedtime stories. Aquarius January 20th - February 18th The whole marriage and parenting thing can seem a bit like an experiment to many naturally independent Aquarians. When motherhood comes their way it is often taken on with their own unique approach. Expect them to seek out new forms of schooling, social activities and diets, and be active in PTA meetings. They will delight in meeting their kids’ friends and generally their doors will always be open and welcoming for little visitors. Pisces February 19th - March 20th Loving, sentimental and sometimes impractical, a Pisces mom will create a wonderful childhood for her little ones. Irrespective of family finances, they will usually live in a creative, inspirational environment, with a vague disregard for convention. Here is a mom who will spend hours on helping her little ones with school projects, and cherish every tattered toy when they have long grown up and created their own homes.

It examines how the medium of photography developed and began to translate the ‘seeing experience’ as it dealt with the inherent problems of motion and perspective shifts in still images. Among its considerations is whether perception can be more fully grasped by including duration and distance in the process of image making, and how stereoscopes and repeated imagery can approximate an act of looking.

American Buffalo Play at AUC

They had a plan. It wasn’t worth a nickel.

American Buffalo originally opened on Broadway in 1977, and last month it was reconceived by newly formed professional theatre company Theatre X at The Gerhart Theatre, AUC New Cairo. The crew of American Buffalo involved 13 AUC students and alumni, and the cast was made up of two graduates from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Waleed Hammad (Teach) and Jason Will (Don); who is a visiting instructor at the Department of Arts, as well as one current AUC theatre student, Pola Kamel (Bob). A theatre director from the United States helped remotely in the production of the play. Cairo East Magazine covered this play, which was performed on an open exposed stage, fully displaying the talents of the cast. On the technical side, lighting, costumes and stage sets showcased the talents of the crew members, rendering this production a true success. American Buffalo is a play written by David Mamet, an American playwright who won a Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for a Tony Award multiple times for his trio of off-Broadway plays including American Buffalo. American Buffalo tells the story of three greedy men who plan a heist during a long day in an old junk shop. American Buffalo, now considered an American classic, is brash and bold, with clever humor and high drama that renders it a highly successful show.

Dining with Flair

The Lemon Tree Katameya By The Lemon Tree & Co.

Concept: Upscale Casual Dining Signature dishes: Tea Smoked Salmon and South African Veal Tenderloin Menu overview: The menu is concise. Brief, but comprehensive. Over the course of the past three years, The Lemon Tree has had 21 menus, showing how versatile the chef is and illustrating the seasonality of dishes. “The main aim, we learned, is to have total control over the production line – adopting a farm-to-table model and encouraging local producers,” explained Mirette Osama, Chef and Co-Founder. Dishes sampled: We were kindly guided through the menu by the Chef. As suggestions are always welcome, we started with a set of appetizers. The Goat´s Cheese Truffles - cheese balls served with dried strawberries, so light, but at the same time rich in flavor, they were served with crushed nuts, golden honey and a drizzle of balsamic reduction. The Puff Sausage Rolls – crispy dough bags filled with Armenian sausage with a hint of sweet chili were perfect for a bite or two. We also sampled the Vietnamese Shrimp Popsicles – shrimp

dough with a hint of sesame oil served on sugar cane sticks - a chef´s adapted recipe from a classic Asian dish. They say you eat with your eyes first and the presentation of the food certainly enforced this saying. For a first course we decided to share the Prawn and Asparagus Risotto cooked in creamy rosemary and carrot broth, which was very well executed and we were wowed with it. As for main dishes, we opted for one meat and one fish. The Honey Orange Ginger Sole with ginger orange sauce on a bed of mashed potatoes and one of the house signature dishes, the South African Veal Tenderloin – succulent beef cooked medium rare garnished with grilled bell peppers accompanied by a mix of potato and sweet potato wedges. To round off our delightful dinner, we ended up sharing a very interesting dessert: White Chocomosa – little bites of pastry filled with white chocolate and nuts on a bed of gooseberry sauce. The Lemon Tree Katameya is about a passion for food and music. Other menu options that appealed: The Cocoa Coffee Fillet and the Tea Smoked Salmon (housesmoked in a blend of tea leaves) Décor: The restaurant atmosphere is relaxed, welcoming and warm.

High white wood ceilings, rattan fixtures, a lot of wood and a sandy palette brought an unpretentious yet elegant feel. The seating arrangements are divided between high tables, tables for larger groups and two bars – one of them with an eating counter. The large windows give an exquisite view of the Katameya Club House pool. The fairy-lights adorn the branches that are hanging from the ceiling over the bar give a mystical ambience and extra charm to the place. The music is understated and complements the atmosphere and the dimmed lights make it rather inviting Beverages: Full bar with Signature Drinks. Be. Good to You – Eat Well, Live Well Katameya Heights Delights

Concept: Be. Good to You caters to the health conscious and conscientious. Mantra: Be Healthy. Be Fit. Be Happy The minds behind it: It all started with the concept created by Health Coach, Nadia Abu Taleb, who partnered up with Fitness Coach, Ali Mazhar, founder of BeFit Egypt and longtime friend and restaurant entrepreneur, Tarek Foda. Each of them brought their own expertise to the table. Signature dishes: Sweet and Sour Beetroot Salad and Baked Falafel Salad Menu overview: The menu covers all meals, from breakfast, to a quick bite (grab and go), lunch and dinner. The entire menu consists of healthy options, with everything relatively guilt-free. The dishes are labelled under gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and/or sugar-free. The idea is to always have a vibrant and

76

seasonal menu, making the best of what´s in season. Dishes sampled: After a thorough look through the menu, we started by sharing the Funghi Coconut Toast, one of the appetizer options. It consists of toast (in-house baked bread) topped with roasted mushrooms cooked in a rich coconut cream, with thinly sliced red chili peppers served with crushed pine nuts on the top. The dish was slightly spicier than we expected but nonetheless delicious. We chose two salads for starters: Sweet and Sour Beetroot Salad – goat cheese, arugula, green apples and strawberries, crushed pistachio, tossed raw honey vinaigrette – which added a zing to salad and was definitely one of the highlights of our meal. The Baked Falafel Salad – two oven-baked falafels, served with red hummus, mixed greens, feta cheese topped with a cilantro dressing. It was an interesting approach with this baked version of an old fried classic. The Chicken Fereek Bowl – chunks

of broccoli and carrots with fereek, served cold, mixed with kale pesto, citrus dressing, and lukewarm slices of chicken breast. The creative spiral zucchini noodles - Zoodles – were served with homemade cherry tomato sauce. Surprisingly tasty and juicy – we didn’t even think it wasn’t real pasta. As we never say no to desserts we indulged ourselves in a warm, aromatic Apple Almond Crumble – roasted chunks of green apple and raisins cooked with raw honey topped with a crumbly almond crust, offering the crisp contrast of the crunchy and the moistness of the soft fruit underneath, accompanied by a scoop of homemade ice cream (dairy free). To wrap up our meal, alongside our coffee (which was served with almond milk on the side) we were treated to a sugarfree chocolate cookie that melted in every single bite, guiltless. Dishes were overall very tasty, nutritious and filling, given proof that you can eat healthy in a flavorful manner.

Other menu options that appealed: The Panang Red Curry Shrimps Bowl (a Malaysian dish), which seems to be one of the best sellers and made us curious to try. Décor: The restaurant has a very comfortable and fresh interior; the use of light colored wood and industrial light fixtures gives it a natural, earthy yet modern vibe. The grey walls and brick contrasts with the orange of some chairs. Inspirational quotes decorate the

walls. The big windows all around provide a great source of natural light. The open bar counter gives it a friendly touch. There´s also a small counter displaying flavored water and bottle juices and a selection of house-made cakes, cookies and bread. Beverages: Cold pressed juices, a variety of smoothies and artisanal coffee (roasted and ground inhouse).

of cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion and pickled cucumber but in a waffle bread bun. We opted for potato wedges as a side. The Potato Kebab was a great hit as a vegetarian option. There is also a spinach and fetta

PANCAKES

Ingredients • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • ¼ teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon sugar, optional • 2 eggs • 1 ½ to 2 cups milk • 2 tablespoons melted and cooled butter (optional), plus un-melted butter for cooking, or use neutral oil

version of the same dish. While we were having our meal, a Croissant Bread Loaf was being sampled at Marny´s and we could not resist but try it. It was just plain good. For dessert we were especially surprised with the Churros and the Date Filled Waffle. The Churros pastry was light, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The same we can say for the Date Filled Waffle. A Belgium waffle machine makes these filled waffles. The Date option is served with mascarpone cream and caramel sauce. Nonetheless the Apple Cinnamon Crêpe was as delicious. Served with vanilla ice cream and sprinkles with gold raisins and caramel sauce. Their positive impression left us spreading the word around and we look forward to going back soon. Marny´s have mastered the art of waffles and crêpes. Other menu options that appealed: Hot dog filled lollipop wafer and the beef crêpe are our next picks. Beverages: Coffees, smoothies, juices Décor: Marny´s is set up in a cozy and elegant twoleveled shop. The Bakery is located downstairs and the Restaurant upstairs. The décor is simple, fresh with lots of wood paneling with floral accents. Clientele mix: Groups of moms, friends, CACians and families. Price range: Reasonably priced Opening hours: Daily from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm Address: 32, Road 213 (Corner Road 231) Degla, Maadi Tel: 010 202 55 555 - 02 252 10 679 Facebook / Instagram: @Marnysbites Preparation 1. Heat a griddle or large frying pan over medium-low heat. In a bowl, mix together dry ingredients. Beat eggs into 1 1/2 cups milk, then stir in 2 tablespoons melted cooled butter, if using it. Gently stir this mixture into dry ingredients, mixing only enough to moisten flour; don’t worry about a few lumps. If batter seems thick, add a little more milk. 2. Place a teaspoon or 2 of butter or oil on griddle or skillet. When butter foam subsides or oil shimmers, pour batter onto frying pan, making pancakes of any size you like. Adjust heat as necessary; usually, first batch will require higher heat than subsequent batches. Flip pancakes after bubbles rise to surface and bottoms brown, after 2 to 4 minutes. Cook until second side is lightly browned.

Mastaba An Egyptian Brunch at Point 90 Mall

Type of cuisine:

Sweet Feteer.

Mastaba at Point 90 Mall is the ultimate on-the-go authentic Egyptian restaurant. Instead of stopping for breakfast, lunch and dinner, stop at Mastaba for all three. From traditional breakfast to mouthwatering main courses, the cuisine is authentic and anything but boring. There is something special about the flavors, time, and magic that go into crafting the perfect Egyptian dish and Mastaba does the job seamlessly.

Dishes sampled: With so much to choose from, we went with the option of more being better. Foul with butter, foul with eggs, both plain and stuffed falafel, fried eggplant, eggs with basterma, grilled Roumy sandwich, cheese and vegetable feteer, sweet feteer with honey, baladi bread and aged cheese with tahina dip.

Mantra: “Authentic Egyptian Food”, a simple mantra that packs a punch. Signature dishes: Mombar, Taameya, Shakshooka, Traditional Egyptian Breakfast, and Savoury and

Other menu options that appealed: Watermelon salad with fetta and ricotta, Dawood Basha (Egyptian meatballs), pigeon with rice, roasted ½ chicken and custard and apple feteer. Décor: Bright yellow throw pillows, grey and

white cushions, dark blue accents, and eco-friendly cutlery gives Mastaba a modern and youthful feel. The outdoor area doubles the indoor area so customers can choose how they want to dine depending on the occasion or time of day. The décor is bright, fun, and chic. Ambience: The ambience at Mastaba is typical of many of the upper-end Egyptian restaurants in the New Cairo area. Hot Turkish coffee, wafts of shisha smoke, the scent of rich dishes, and friendly laughter all fill the restaurant giving it a relaxed and happy vibe. Beverages available: Hot or cold, Mastaba has all the beverages you could possibly want. The extensive coffee list makes other coffee shops look under qualified for

Happy

“Working” Mother’s Day We all know that being a mother is a full time job. Let alone being a mother with a full time job, with working hours, deadlines, targets and all. Working mothers are juggling between their career and their children but always forget themselves. To all working mothers out there, take care of your health for neither your career nor your children can make it without you. You are what you eat In order to maintain your stamina to keep up with both your career and your children you need to include a number of items in your daily food intake. The rule says that home cooked food is always healthier and cheaper since you control the ingredients. While you are at the supermarket, buy a medium sized lunchbox, preferably a divided one and make sure it doesn’t leak. In the lunchbox put the following in each side: • A handful of nuts (any kind but preferably almonds) or an energy granola bar

Here’s a very quick chicken salad recipe that can be prepared in 5 minutes Ingredients: • ½ cup sweet corn • ½ cup black or red beans (according to your preference) • ½ cup diced or cherry tomatoes

• Any kind of fruit (an apple, an orange, some strawberries or berries)

• ¼ cup diced red onions (according to your preference)

• Greens (a salad or a raw cucumber, tomato, carrot)

• ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

• A slice of protein or a light sandwich with grainy bread (brown bread)

• 1 cup of shredded grilled chicken

• *You can mix the last two options in one by making a salad that also has chicken or fish in the ingredients

82

79

• 1 chopped avocado

• Romaine lettuce

Dressing: • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar • 2 tablespoon Dijon mustard • ½ cup olive oil

• 1 lemon • 1 tsp garlic powder • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 tsp salt • ¼ tsp black pepper • 1 tablespoon fresh minced oregano or 2 tablespoons dried oregano Preparation: • Mix all ingredients in a bowl without adding the dressing and cover it. Serve some in the bigger side of the lunchbox, shake dressing well and add according to your preference. • You can serve yourself some the next day until both the dressing and the salad are finished. You can also wrap some of the salad in a whole-wheat wrap and eat it as a sandwich.
