The great thing about being an editor is that one, plus a tribe of talented people of different kinds, makes interesting things happen. I’m lucky. I’ve got a talented tribe here at Cairo East Magazine, and some interesting things have happened in preparing our November issue. Over the past few issues I hope you’ve noticed that the team at Cairo East Magazine has been modernising your magazine, evolving to fit into the way you live today. We wanted to make your magazine more playful, more useful and more contemporary. And with this, our much anticipated November issue is designed especially for our male readers. We are extremely proud of this issue because we think it’s bold, brave and beautiful. It’s spirited and stylish. We love a rule breaker and so do you. Let’s start with our cover image this month, which is brought to you by Dutch photographer and artist Jackson Kunis, where his love for the subculture of custom motorbikes is evident in his dynamic photography. To see more of his work, follow him on Instagram -- details below. We flew out to Aswan to meet with Sir Magdi Yacoub for the inauguration of the new wing of the Aswan Heart Centre, read more on his inspirational work with the charity Chain of Hope and the future of healthcare in Egypt on page 18. This issue highlights an interview with one of the Arab world’s icons, actor Adel Imam. We have been idolizing him for quite sometime at our office, and have finally managed to pin him down! He has given us some of his time and sat down to chat with us, read more of his interview on page 22. We also brought together men’s fashion trends this fall, as well as made to measure shirts and suits, a 30-minute gym workout, health tips for men over 40, and so much more. We look at modern office spaces designed by some of the most prominent interior designers in Egypt. To wrap things up, we bring you the best features of all the top hotels around Egypt, and in What’s Up Cairo you will find info on all the new restaurants and entertainment coming up this November. There is so much more to keep you amused this month! See you next month!

On the cover: BMW, R80 built by Ironwood Custom Motorcycles and photography by Jackson Kunis.

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE CELEBRITY

The Man, and The Philanthropist

“I’m not alone; I’m just one of a team that works in many different areas.” 18

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE CELEBRITY

The twenty-second of October was an important day at the Magdi Yacoub Foundation Heart Centre in Aswan. A host of prestigious figures; generous donors, government ministers and businessmen, gathered to mark the opening of a new wing at the ground breaking hospital that is the flagship of the celebrated heart surgeon’s continuing mission to not only improve the nation’s health, but to provide hope to those in need even beyond the country’s borders. Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub’s international contribution to cardiology and the development of Egypt’s health system is unmatched, and as a life-saving surgeon and pioneer in his field he needs no introduction; he is already a national hero.

As Ghada Waly, Minister for Social Affairs, aptly noted in her speech, the celebration in Aswan appropriately fell on the same day as Upper Egypt’s October sun alignment festival, the day on which light floods the temple of Ramsis the Second at Abu Simbel. The symbolism of this ray of light shone brightly over the event. Entering the Aswan Heart Centre the sense of hope, positive energy and even happiness despite the grave condition patients here may be in, is tangible. It resonates from the hospital staff and seems to reside in every corridor, ward and laboratory. The feeling is clear; this is a place of miracles, but it also sets a high standard of quality, on-going health care that is actively looking to the future. Cairo East Magazine had the opportunity for an exclusive interview with Professor Yacoub, and put to him some questions about the Centre, its future, and keeping Egypt’s population healthy. CEM: You’ve made a big difference to the lives of many. How do you encourage others to follow your example? MY: I’m not alone; I’m just one of a team that work in many different areas. I am not conscious of acting as an example – I just try to do, and others can see whether this is something they would like to emulate. The great thing is the young people; they believe in the same concept and want to make it work. If you do something and people love it they will want to do it too. Nothing happens by chance. The hospital is only four years old and I never thought in my wildest dreams that it would all come together so fast. But I see that it’s because all of us believe in the same cause. Egyptian people are suffering in silence; we see it in the eyes of children and their parents, and I feel very emotional about this. We are very conscious here of sustainability; how all of this will continue after I am gone. It is all about training and encouraging young doctors and scientists to follow in my footsteps and be enthused with the same goals. What has been the impact on the local community here in Aswan, having such good health care? Well, this is as much an observation as anything. We prioritize first and foremost the people from Aswan, then from Upper Egypt, the rest of the country, and other African countries. This goes to the heart of our mission, which is to serve those in most need. We offer acute services, such as opening a blocked artery to prevent a heart attack, as >> CAIROEASTMAG.COM

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE CELEBRITY

well as comprehensive cardiac care for both children and adults who are born with defects. Apart from all that, we are a source of employment for the local community, and psychologically they are proud to have a Centre of such a high standard here on their doorstep. We always say they own it – which they do.

knowledge rather than thinking they know it all, and with a caring attitude towards society. Most of the time we are successful in finding the right people, and if we feel we’ve made a mistake we will tell them, in the most civilized way, to find another institution.

What is the guiding ethos of the Centre? The word dignity is very high on our agenda and we are proud to treat people as human beings with the utmost dignity regardless of who they are, and give priority to poor, desperate people. We have been collaborating from day one with our sister charity Chain of Hope, which is part of our mission. There are patients recognized by the Chain of Hope medical board from African countries such as Mozambique, Ethiopia and Uganda who are desperate for our specific expertise. Chain of Hope flies them here and we treat them. We also offer training services to staff and doctors from African countries and also places in real need such as Haiti, with a view to opening other centres elsewhere. How do you select the team who staff the hospital? We advertise, or people come to us, and we have an interview board. We know what we are looking for, and we tell them this is an egalitarian society; you need us as much as we need you, but we have specific criteria just as you do. For our part we look for applicants who are young (the younger the better), enthusiastic and hungry for

20

21

Are you optimistic about the future of healthcare in Egypt? I am, even though it’s a daunting task. We recently had a conference here at the Centre entitled Global Health Care, sponsored by us in collaboration with several universities, and we invited the head of the British NHS, who reminded us that when the NHS started in the UK, the country was on its knees. It was the post war period, there was rationing, the economy was devastated. But the concept was correct and a national health service

could and did act as a unifying force in the country. You can start small and grow into it. I feel confident that if we start a scheme for global health insurance then there are people who would help and contribute. It’s important to guarantee quality in whatever we do, beginning with primary health care. It’s evident from running a centre like this that tertiary health care depends very heavily on primary health care, since you cannot treat people unless they are diagnosed correctly. Also we recently started a study in one of the local villages whereby we will examine twenty-eight thousand people and determine their cardio-vascular status, looking at risk factors, bio-markers, genetics and utilizing the latest technology. The African region is lagging behind the rest of the world in the development of ‘personalized precision medicine’ – the future of medicine - but studies like this help provide important data not only to help our own population, but also to provide data to the rest of the world and help contribute to scientific knowledge. When you give a drug to a patient there is only a twenty to fifty percent chance it will work, but with better knowledge about genetic composition, the structure and function of the individual, we can do better. That is why we have, upstairs in our new wing, young scientists working with the latest in technical apparatus; genomics, sequencing, imaging, computer processing and 3D modelling of the heart. All of this helps us plan and audit before and after operations. So there are lots of exciting things happening!

Egypt’s Much-Loved

ADEL IMAM

Shares his Story Precious Moments Shared by the Egyptian Icon By Shorouk Abbas & Hilary Diack

More than simply a star, talented and versatile actor Adel Imam has justifiably risen to the rank of national treasure in the years he has graced our screens. With well over 100 films to his credit, he has become a fixture in the lives of most Egyptian households. Starting out in mainly comedic roles in the 1970’s, with a dash of romance thrown in, Imam has since been lauded for his handling of deeper and more challenging dramatic roles. Not one to shy away from controversial scripts, he has often played characters who take on the establishment and high profile organisations; a situation which has placed him in hot water both on and off screen. In honor of its first ever issue dedicated to men, Cairo East Magazine chose to connect with this exceptional man to learn more about his life, his work and his motivation. >>

In a lifetime of epic achievements, many have resonated deeply, with every minute being special in its’ own way. Above all, though, the role he has played in spreading the love of Egyptian Arabic from the Maghreb to the Gulf through his films has been most rewarding for him. Egyptian Arabic is strongly linked to local culture and humor, so this has enabled the huge audience of viewers across the region to develop a strong appreciation for what Egypt is so fortunate to have. Imam knows that through his prolific roles he has become an ambassador of Egyptian language and culture. This is not the only ambassadorial role he has taken on. He was appointed in 2000 as a Goodwill Ambassador to the UN Commission for Refugees, and it is a cause he is very committed to. His strong personal belief in the value of family, security and stability is at the root of this, so any work he can do to help alleviate the suffering of those who have lost this privilege is important to him. Imam stresses that these values have played out in his own life, as he was blessed with having love and support from his own family. His mother played an important part in his life. Although he was relieved that she had an end to her suffering from a painful illness when she passed away, the loss was devastating for him. It was his personal experiences in childhood that reinforced his determination to create a strong family unit when he married. Imam believes that marriage is not to be taken lightly, and he and his wife Hala have enjoyed many years together, and have raised three wonderful children, Sara, Rami and Mohamed. Never intending for his children to follow in his footsteps, paradoxically it did actually work out that way. Imam had serious concerns about them entering the world of film, but it seemed to be in their blood! All three of his children graduated from AUC, from the Faculty of Media and Dramatic Arts. Rami, his elder son, had initially started to study engineering, but it didn’t take long for him to find his niche in the world of film. He is now a well-known film director. His

“Adel Imam has justifiably risen to the rank of national treasure” younger son, Mohamed, is carving out a successful career as an actor, and seems to be heading for stardom. His daughter Sara chose to pursue her role as wife and mother In a world of increasingly fragile relationships, Imam derives much happiness from the close bonds within his family. Always having felt close to the countryside and the extended family structures to be found there, his rural roots have translated into the same traditions. Following this pattern, he lives with his wife, children, and grandchildren in a large villa in a green setting on the outskirts of Cairo. Imam feels that this closeness works well, as they

live in an atmosphere of respect and affection. All family members are called by their given names, parents and children alike, but of course, as patriarch he has the honor of being called “Geddoo” or Grandfather. Laughingly, he concurs that grandfathers are often negatively stereotyped in many Egyptian films, and are depicted as figures to ridicule, but he personally is thrilled to be one, and adores his grandchildren. For him, the element of stability, and being grounded, is paramount in creating a harmonious family life. His work and energy have largely gone towards achieving this.

According to Imam, his wife Hala has been everything in his road to fame and stardom. Both by creating a happy family, and supporting him every step of the way, there is no doubt that she was behind his success. Marriage is an important step, and a lifelong commitment, he believes, so choosing a partner who loves and appreciates you, who can experience the ups and downs with you, is vital. And of course, he adds, as a happily married man, he has earned a lot of respectability! Pondering the key to his immense popularity Imam muses, whether it is a comedic role, or a dramatic one, he always seeks to be >> CAIROEASTMAG.COM

accessible to the audience: to play the role in a way that the audience can empathize and identify with. He always strives to bring the realities of their lives into focus in a way that allows them to also feel part of the situation, where they can experience what the character is going through. Looking at recent developments within the world of Egyptian cinema, Imam feels it is on the brink of a resurgence. This covers full-length films, as well as short films and documentaries. While Imam’s films have always captured a massive audience consistently over the years, he recognizes that there is still a relatively under-utilized pool of talent within the new breed of young actors, directors and cinematographers. Participation in international film festivals will give up-and-coming actors and directors the chance to showcase their talents, and will expand the reach of local productions.

be acknowledged so the industry can work towards satisfying an eager market.

By maintaining standards and seeking out creative scripts, Imam feels confident that the film industry in Egypt has the potential to regain its place in the Arabic speaking world. There is still a huge audience in Egypt that prefers local films to foreign blockbusters, and this must

His advice to young actors starting out in their careers is to maintain authenticity. Circumstances change, public tastes and perceptions change, but so long as they feel for a role they will connect with the audience. Imam urges young actors not to be afraid to turn away from

roles that they can’t feel inspired by. When the right role comes their way, they should grasp the opportunity and give it all their heart and energy. Following the example Adel Imam has set, both in his life and work, many up-and-coming actors can benefit from his wisdom and experience. Egypt can consider herself blessed. CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE BEAUTY

We at Cairo East Magazine decided to put together a list of the 8 ways a man can take things up a notch in the world of grooming without looking too “done”. 1. Trim the nose hairs. This is something very basic that makes a world of difference. Believe me when I tell you this is something that people do notice.

2. Clean the hair off your ears and neck. This is something your barber can do for you monthly that gives the appearance of good grooming. The sight of long ear hairs, or neck hair going into the collar of your shirt, is never very attractive.

3. Keep your nails short and clean. Dirty, long fingernails require no explanation as to why they don’t work. Why not try a monthly manicure/pedicure to have someone take care of this for you.

4. Have your clothes tailored to fit your body. No matter what shape you are, the right fit makes everything look so much better.

6. Cleanse your face on a regular basis with a facial soap. So many men use the same soap on their face that they use on their body. Most body soaps are too strong for the face. You must invest in a cleanser that is just for the face, as the facial skin is much more sensitive than the skin on the body.

7. Remember, less is more when it comes to fragrance. It’s great to smell good, but everyone doesn’t have to smell it. Fragrance is such a personal preference, and you really must find the one that works best for you. Just remember not to bathe in it.

8. Match your belt to your shoes. This is really simple and makes a world of difference. If you are wearing black shoes, you don’t wear a brown belt. This basic tip makes everything you wear look that much better.

Human Nature - PWC

Human Nature When Kamelizer gave its brief to Ramzi Makram-Ebeid of boutique interior, furniture and product design firm Human Nature for a new office space in the Greek Campus of AUC, certain elements had to be present. CEO Hanan Abdel Meguid wanted to create a converted loft feel mixed with vernacular inspirations from around North Africa and the Arab world. The office, like her camel icon, was to be a representation of her love for and work in the region. Mixed with the converted loft feel, the office was meant to be impressive, laid back, and of course, conducive to work. Contracting was carried out by Mazura, and involved creating a structure with no obtrusive columns in the middle. Rather, the engineer distributed the weight to four corner columns that carried the second level. The loft was then divided into a space with a downstairs public area, and an upstairs private office for the team. By reviving the old mosaic flooring as well as breathing life back into the super cool, but super battered, original metal windows facing the garden the heritage of the space has been retained. Lighting, furniture and design details were kept in context throughout, all culminating in a functional yet aesthetic space that is a delight to be in. PWC wanted to create a welcoming office for start-ups and small to medium businesses at the Greek campus, while still maintaining its’ professional demeanor and corporate image. The very colorful PWC logo, as well as the famous AUC Library steps that the office overlooks inspired the design of this project. The layout covers a reception area, an informal/projector screen viewing area, a work area/kitchenette and a meeting space. All the spaces have a level of privacy, while also allowing a very clear view of the large projector screen/white board. The finishes were a crucial point. The flooring is made of solid oak strips, while the workstations are oak veneers. Exposed brick walls give the space a converted feel, while also creating an interesting dichotomy between the sleek clean wood and the rough surroundings.

Home Security Systems

More Advanced, More Accessible, More Options Lifestyles change, and so do our living requirements. Inner city dwellers are now spreading out to the leafy green suburbs. More space, healthier environment, cleaner air - what’s not to love about moving to a new home? Especially if you have a summer pad as well, so you can enjoy the North Coast scene. More mobile lifestyles mean a greater need for home security: peace of mind should be top of your list. Cairo East Magazine caught up with two leading suppliers of hi-tech security systems and equipment to see what is available, and how it can be installed. 44

45

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE HOME & GARDEN

We first spoke with Maged Abdel Wadood, CEO of IntelliTECH: CEM: What are the latest innovations in systems for home and property security? MA: Systems for home security have pretty much remained the same over the past decade or so, but with enhancements in quality, sensitivity, reliability and intelligence. The basic structure of a system is a number of detection devices connected to a central processing unit, which then triggers various types of alerts/ alarms. With the pervasiveness of communications technology, these modern day systems communicate remotely with monitoring stations and are capable of being controlled and polled remotely for ease of use, safety and convenience. Home security and property security systems are used for detection of intrusion or attempts at intrusion. Security systems can be single layered or multilayered depending on the “Threat Assessment” conducted by the security professional. Layering is the implementation of multiple levels of security in an installation so that the aggressor has to bypass multiple barriers prior to gaining egress into the location. As an example, in a home we could install perimeter beams to detected any movement across them triggering a preliminary alert and possibly switching on garden lights to scare away intruders, the second level could be a CCTV system to track and record video, a third and final layer would be the motion detectors inside the home, which would set off the alarm and dial out to the Central Monitoring Station and the Quick Response Security Team. How can they be installed? It is generally best to always hire a professional company to do the assessment and installation for you. Do-it-yourself systems work but are never as reliable or safe as a professionally designed and installed system. Installation of the actual components and programming of the system shouldn’t take more than a day’s work if all goes well.

How can we monitor our homes through CCTV or video connections when we are out of town?

of wire runs will need to be made to install boosters to overcome the attenuation effects of the concrete walls.

With the modern day CCTV systems available in abundance everywhere you can monitor your home or place of business from anywhere in the world as long as you have an Internet connection. There are systems that will stream full HD video directly to your smart phone / tablet or PC. The installer will setup the software and configure it for you.

The down side of wireless is that it requires changing of batteries in the detectors from time to time and limitations in range. Usually wired systems are more reliable and quicker to maintain.

Capabilities such as selecting which camera to view and control of the camera features such as zoom in and out are built into this software. This technology lends itself to a plethora of utilizations such as viewing the kids at home with the nanny or checking that employees are doing what they’re supposed to be doing. There is a wide range of pricing and it usually reflects the quality, reliability and transmission speed of the images. Are wireless security systems available? Wireless systems are available and are very useful in places where it is difficult to pull wire. In most cases in Egypt, however, a couple

Can systems be installed in existing properties without a need to break surfaces or damage existing construction? Yes they can. This is where wireless security systems come into play. However to do wireless CCTV systems would be extremely costly as a video transmitter/receiver pair would be required for each camera and range concerns would come into play. What systems are available for apartments, and which for villas? The systems for both are identical in theory. The differences would be in the number and type of detectors and/or cameras used. It is always best to speak to a professional company with a good reputation to get a proper assessment of your needs. >> CAIROEASTMAG.COM

Control your home security system from your smart phone, Tech Hauz Tech Hauz expert, Islam Nasr Addin also shared information on available products: IN: The new technology to watch is IOT connected home security systems. This year has witnessed an unprecedented number of smart technologies showcased as the ‘Internet of things’ revolution gathers pace. And the security industry, whose presence in the residential market was hitherto focused around alarms, gates and locks, is at the forefront of the trend in smart technologies, building advanced video surveillance and biometric security capabilities into everyday objects. In order to make things less complicated for customers, manufacturers are making sure to keep the setup steps simple by enabling purchasers to plug the smart hub to a router, download its mobile app and run a few steps to connect any new or existing sensors in the home. What is new in garden lighting using solar powered systems that come on at sunset? Smarter than ever! We now have smart color LED solar garden lights

46

47

to add special lighting effects to home gardens. Known as RGB color LED garden lighting, with a mobile app it is possible change the lighting tone of your garden with the tap of one finger. They are purely driven by solar power and therefore they are just as green as your garden. With added intelligence and a built-in light sensor, it can detect the lighting conditions and automatically turn on or off accordingly. How can we monitor our homes through CCTV or video connections when we are out of town? Home Automation widened home security boundaries to the max, connected cameras/sensors/relays/ devices have become so smart, you can build scenarios and actions based on triggers and conditions and get notified instantly with what’s happening via your mobile phone. What about installing systems in existing properties without a need to break surfaces or damage existing construction? Yes, most of new the sensors/relays are wireless and can be pasted on the walls or doors or any surface using a double sided tape.

What systems are available for apartments, and which for villas? Home Automation Hubs are the same for both; the only difference is the amount of sensors/security devices. There are many wireless technology systems used in the world for security and automation, such as Z-Wave, Zigbee, Bluetooth, WiFi etc, they vary by the nature of the automation or security system you would like to use and how manufacturers build their own products. Some automation and security hubs support their own brand and frequency, other hubs support all wireless technologies, which is a plus point as it will support a wider range of IOT and security devices. THE 20-30 MINUTE WORKOUT By Hesham Khalil

Staying Fit in Your Busy & Hectic Day

If you are a busy working man or woman, there are easily two-dozen things that could completely choke your workout time in any given day. The result? Most working men and women put their fitness and health on the sideline. Your health as a co-income provider, or primary provider, is an extremely valuable asset to you and your family. You 48

49

need to treat it as such and make small daily investments that will keep your productivity levels up to par day in and day out. Here are some quick, easy, and effective workouts you can do early in the morning before heading out to the office, or in the 20 minutes before bedtime.

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE WELLBEING

Important Tips to Avoid Injuries 1. Take 5 to 10 minutes to warm up and cool down properly. 2. Plan to start slowly and boost your activity level gradually unless you are already exercising frequently and vigorously. 3. Take slow steps and don’t rush. You should be aware of your fitness level and the appropriate intensity level, as well as the approach. If not sure always aim for the lower intensity level to avoid over strain on your ligaments and joints that might cause injuries.

11. Delayed muscle soreness that starts 12 to 24 hours after a workout and gradually is a normal response to taxing your muscles. 12. Do it right, try to get the technique right from the beginning, to ensure you are using your muscles correctly. THE WORK-OUT

1. Ten minutes warm up run walk Walk one minute and then sprint one minute.

outward, and bend your hips and knees to lower your body as far as you can. Begin trying to push your feet outward—but don’t actually move them—as if you were going to spread the floor apart. When you’ve squatted as low as you can without losing the arch in your lower back, contract your glutes and thighs and explode back upward to the starting position, exhaling the breath forcefully.

2. Dumbbell Flye

4. Listen to your body. Hold off on exercise when you’re sick or feeling very fatigued. Cut back if you cannot finish an exercise session, feel faint after exercise or fatigued during the day, or suffer persistent aches and pains in joints after exercising. 5. If you stop exercising for a while, drop back to a lower level of exercise initially. If you’re doing strength training, for example, lift lighter weights or do fewer reps or sets. 6. Choose clothes and shoes designed for your type of exercise. Replace shoes every six months as cushioning wears out. 7. Never lock your joints while exercising, always keep them in a soft position. 8. For strength training, good form is essential. Initially use no weight, or very light weights, when learning the exercises. Never sacrifice good form by hurrying to finish reps or sets, or struggling to lift heavier weights. 9. Exercising vigorously in hot, humid conditions can lead to serious overheating and dehydration. Slow your pace when the temperature rises above 21oC. On days when the thermometer is expected to reach 27oC, exercise during cooler morning or evening hours or at an air-conditioned gym. Watch for signs of overheating, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, faintness, cramps, or palpitations. 10. One of the very important causes of injury while working out is dehydration. Sufficient water is very important for your muscle health and flexibility.

Reps: 15-20 Lie on a flat bench with a dumbbell in each hand. Keep a slight bend in your elbows as you spread your arms wide, lowering the weights until they’re even with your chest. Flex your pectorals and lift the weights back to the starting position.

The Quest for Eternal Youth

Exploring the Benefits and Risks of HGH with Dr. Hussein Ghanem By Hilary Diack

52

53

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE HEALTH

CEM: Dr. Hussein, what is HGH?

It’s not a new thing. In fact, the search for an elixir or magic potion to ward off the physical effects of aging is an eternal human quest. A new warrior in the battle against signs of aging is HGH. HGH has been getting a lot of attention recently, so we chatted with leading dermatologist and andrologist Dr. Hussein Ghanem, to get the facts.

HG: Human Growth Hormone is important for growth in childhood and helps throughout life to maintain healthy tissues and organs. It’s produced by the pituitary gland that is located at the base of the brain. Production of growth hormone declines gradually starting middle age, which prompted some anti-aging physicians to consider it as an anti-aging treatment. It’s also important to remember that exercise is a potent physiological stimulus of GH secretion. Why has this treatment become so popular now? Media, Internet sites and a few antiaging physicians popularized the point of view that replacement of HGH as its levels decrease with aging would help restore and preserve the declining muscle tone and bone mass. However, the majority of medical professionals remain skeptical, HGH is not approved by the FDA as an anti-aging treatment, actually some concerns have been raised about its safety. How long has HGH been in use? Human Growth Hormone was purified and synthesized in 1981 for use in growth hormone deficiency in children. It wasn’t long before it began being abused by competitors in sports around 1982, and several regulatory authorities have now banned it. Considerable research and development have been carried out and in 2005, and more advanced forms of (recombinant HGH) became available. What conditions is HGH most commonly used for? Solid medical indications for HGH use are mainly in children, where

it’s prescribed for the treatment of growth hormone deficiency, short stature, and in boys and girls with certain congenital defects that could hamper growth, as well as acquired disorders like kidney failure. Medical indications for the use of HGH include disorders like Short Bowel Syndrome, a condition in which nutrients are not properly absorbed due to severe intestinal disease or the surgical removal of a large portion of the small intestine, pituitary gland tumors leading to HGH deficiency, and loss of muscle associated with HIV/AIDS infection.

Expected benefits for adults who use HGH for a medical indication associated with HGH deficiency include: • Increased exercise capacity • Increased bone density • Increased muscle mass • Decrease in body fat What are the new scientific methods used within HGH? Studies of healthy adults taking human growth hormone are limited. Although it appears that human growth hormone can increase muscle mass and reduce the amount of body fat in healthy older adults, the increase in muscle doesn’t translate into increased strength. It isn’t clear if human growth hormone might provide other benefits to healthy adults. >>

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE HEALTH

“Studies have shown that women have almost double the amount of growth hormone compared to men” In an ongoing study of very old people, those in their 90s with naturally low levels of human growth hormone appear to have a far better chance of living into their 100s compared with people who have above-average levels of the hormone When used as an anti-aging treatment, what benefits can be expected? Proposed benefits for HGH (that have not obtained FDA approval due to insufficient scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness in normal adults without HGH deficiency) include: increased muscle strength, better fracture healing, enhanced weight loss, stronger bones, reduced cardiovascular disease risk, improvement in erectile dysfunction, decreased obesity, better mood and cognitive function, and improved sleep. How is the treatment administered? HGH is given in the form of daily intramuscular injections. What side effects are possible? There are several side effects that have been clearly exhibited and

54

55

linked to HGH treatment. These include, but are not limited to: high cholesterol levels, carpal tunnel syndrome, swelling due to fluid in the body tissues (edema), and nerve, muscle, or joint pain. Enlargement of breast tissue (gynecomastia) has been noted, particularly in men. There is an increased risk of diabetes and cancerous tumors (Hodgkin’s lymphoma), and people have complained of numbness and tingling of the skin. Are there any contra-indications? Any allergy to HGH, and young men and women who already have normal levels of HGH.

might be surprising. How come men who are bigger and stronger than women have less growth hormone? The answer is simple; men have testosterone levels that are hundreds of times higher than women. What’s the bottom line? If you have specific concerns about aging, ask your doctor about proven ways to improve your health. Remember, healthy lifestyle choices — such as eating a healthy diet and including physical activity in your daily routine — can help you feel your best, as you get older.

Is it suitable for everyone? The only agreement is on its use in cases with HGH deficiency, it’s not advisable for use by young adults, and its use as an anti-aging medicine is controversial. Can HGH be used for women? Studies have shown that women have almost double the amount of growth hormone compared to men. One can assume that it wouldn’t be wise to give HGH to women who already have higher HGH levels. This

Reaching Tipping Point How Men Can Manage Burnout and Stress with Dr. Georgette Savvides By Francesca Sullivan

56

57

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE FEATURE

You have a demanding, high-pressure job but lately you can’t seem to make

decisions or summon any interest or energy for projects at work. You are needed more than ever yet all you feel like doing is closing your phone and being alone. You feel unsupported and colleagues always seem to be doing the wrong thing. You’ve been having trouble sleeping and have lost your appetite for food, fun and life in general. If any of this sounds familiar, it could be that you are suffering classic symptoms of burnout. Although it’s common for men in particular to go through such times without seeking professional counselling, help is at hand for those who need it. Cairo East Magazine interviewed Dr. Georgette Savvides, one therapist who helps sufferers handle burnout and get their lives back on an even keel.

CEM: What are the primary causes for men undergoing ‘burnout’? GS: It’s important to acknowledge that stress and burnout are two separate things, even though longterm stress can be a prime cause of burnout. It may be work-related, but not necessarily; it could be financial, or to do with family or emotional problems. Burnout is also unrelated to gender; men and women can be equally affected. What are the recognized symptoms? In men, burnout tends to present as increasingly aggressive behaviour, irritability, short temper, volatility and loss of focus. Attention will go to the cause of the stress, but burnout can also result in disengagement and disorientation. Physical and emotional exhaustion are prime symptoms. If you are feeling overwhelmed, suffering from insomnia, finding it hard to concentrate and things are starting to pile up, these are some of the early warning signs. Physical effects can also be more serious and may include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, gastrointestinal pain, dizziness, fainting, and/or headaches. These should always be medically assessed even though the cause might point to increased stress. Is burnout widely recognised and

addressed, or do men just tend to try and cope? The percentage of men seeking therapy for burn-out and stressrelated issues has increased; men are becoming more open to the idea and I do see a certain number in my clinic. However, women are still far more likely than men to address such problems and look for professional help.

and others) are more prone to stress. Also people who tend to have a more negative outlook or perspective on situations. The more objective and realistic someone’s expectations are, the less they are likely to become over-stressed.

Is it caused by lack of motivation or interest in work? Lack of motivation or interest in work is actually a prime symptom of burnout. If you feel demotivated and are looking for reasons to be absent from work this can be a tell-tale sign. In the early stages it might just seem like lack of enthusiasm or wanting to avoid projects and responsibilities; not answering emails or regularly coming into work late. Later it can lead to being short tempered with colleagues and cutting yourself off from people, including family and friends outside work, feeling apathetic and hopeless. In later stages, it can lead to depression. Does mental attitude and personality type play a big role? Research shows that Type A personalities (natural leaders, people who tend to overload themselves with responsibilities and have high expectations of themselves

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE HEALTH

How can stress and burnout best be tackled? If someone comes seeking help for stress management or burnout the job of the therapist is not to try to change them – you cannot change someone’s personality - but to challenge the belief system behind their behaviour. Entrenched attitudes to situations can be re-examined and coping mechanisms brought into play, such as learning new problemsolving techniques. Sometimes you may need to re-evaluate your goals to redress life imbalances. The therapist would also suggest ways to deal with the symptoms. Do you have tips and lifestyle advice for men to avoid reaching this point? In anyone’s life a good work/play balance is essential, with time management to schedule the number of hours each day given over to work related versus pleasurable activities. Make time for happiness! If someone is burnt out they need to reduce their work schedule to spend more time with friends and family, arrange trips and weekends away and so on. On a daily level it’s important to develop healthy relationships with work colleagues, communicate properly, have boundaries and learn to say no. Being a constant people-pleaser will eventually lead to burnout. Exercise is a very helpful ongoing

58

59

tool for dealing with stress since it releases neuro chemicals that sustain your mood in a balanced manner. Just thirty minutes in the gym three times per week can be all it takes, but if you play regular sports such as football or tennis, or practise yoga or Pilates, this is equally good. How can the family be more supportive? By recognizing the early warning signs. If a man is lacking in motivation, seems edgy and irritable, over sensitive or just not feeling well in himself, then be ready to talk about any issues with concern. Now is not the time to make too many demands, try to relieve the pressure by being accommodating and understanding. Is stress ever a positive thing? Some people perform better under a certain level of stress, and certainly the kind of positive stress that follows a good event such as a promotion can be a motivator for improved performance. Some stressful events are also positive – a wedding, for example. Reaction to stress and how it affects different people is a very individualistic issue, and some people are more tolerant of stress levels than others, depending on their own time-line. It only becomes a problem when it starts to interfere with their day-to day functioning and impacts negatively on relationships with other people in their lives

Dr. Georgette Savvides holds a MSc. in Clinical and Public Health Aspects of Addiction from King’s College, Institute of Psychiatry National Addition Center, UK, and a Conversation Diploma in Psychology from the Open University in London, UK, in addition to a Doctorate in Psychology with a specialization in Adult Clinical Psychology from City University, UK, and a second professional doctorate from Southern California University in the USA, with a specialization in Occupational/Business Psychology. These three aspects of yourself are interconnected as part of the same whole, so to take care of one, you need to take care of all. YOUR BODY Your body is the portal to your mind and soul and you need to take care of it and treat it with respect. Here are some tips on how to maintain your body: Know your Numbers It is strongly recommended at the age of 40 to look into your blood pressure, cholesterol level, blood sugar level, and body weight. people, well, tomorrow is here and you cannot afford to wait any longer. Various medical problems that occur in men over 40 are associated with obesity and poor heart health. Following a nutrition and fitness plan is an essential step to a healthier life, but do not forget to provide your body with the right amount of rest and sleep as well. Quit Smoking! Smoking is both a physical addiction and a psychological habit, which makes it hard to quit, but in your 40’s you have to think seriously about finding a way to quit. To quit smoking successfully, you will need to have a good plan that addresses both the short-term challenge of quitting and the long-term challenge of preventing relapse. From A Debilitating Illness to the Seven Summits

Mahmoud Hussein’s Journey By Harim Humayun

A happy-go-lucky chap with an enormous goal and the will to do it with style; Mahmoud Hussein has the urge to climb mountains to raise awareness for Crohn’s disease. Just back from his ascent to the summit to Mount Kilimanjaro, we sit down over a cup of coffee for some insight into the motivation behind it all.

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE WELLBEING

I lived for 8 months with the disease and then I had the colostomy. With UC, I was kind of lucky because you get to a point where if you can’t live with it you can do a colostomy; which is basically removing part of the colon or all of it, I removed all of it. It has to be done in stages. This is the thing in Egypt, everyone that I have been in touch with who have Crohn’s or UC, were all misdiagnosed in the beginning, including me. How have you tackled it? I managed to get my life in some sort of routine while managing this disease, I started school again, but I had to take time off now and then whenever I relapsed. Then I had the surgery, which is difficult and everyone was advising me not to do it. One doctor simply put it into perspective, he said if you cannot live with it, then just take the risk and do it. In the end, I was not the one making this decision, it was my parents and it worked out for the best, two years of my life had already been affected by this disease. CEM: Tell us about how this all started… MH: Just to be clear, I have Ulcerative Colitis (UC). The difference between that and Crohn’s disease is that UC affects the large intestine while Crohn’s affects the whole digestive system. The thing is people don’t know how you get it or how you can get rid of it; you can only manage the illness. There are different levels with UC, with level 4 being the harshest; I had level 4. I had flare-ups that lasted like a week or two and you have bloody stool, you vomit everything, bad diarrhea, you cannot sleep, and painful stomach aches. So I had seven months of this, the flare-ups. I was 17 when I was diagnosed. I had no idea what was going on with me. I remember being at my friend’s birthday party and I assumed I had stomach flu or something. I lost 5 kilos in one week. I was getting the wrong medication, I couldn’t move or sleep. My family was afraid, I was afraid. I was getting worse by the day; I could only eat a spoon of jello a day, that’s all I could digest. I was basically in and out of hospitals.

Do you feel that you have achieved things that you would not have tackled without having to cope with the illness? I wanted to climb mountains at a very young age, before I became ill. I used to watch climber and adventurer Omar Samra who he has been such an inspiration. And then I was sick and he came to my school where I won a competition to go to Saint Catherine with him and I was supposed to travel with him. They had to postpone it due to the revolution. When he sent the email to set the date again, I was in the hospital, weighed about 35 kg and just had my colostomy. I remember thinking that I must go on this adventure! I told my parents and they right out refused. After this I started going to the gym, working on my lower body strength because that is what was going to get me where I wanted to go. Tell us about some of your travels and adventures. So far my biggest adventure has been the climb of Mount Kilimanjaro (19, 339 feet). I always wanted to climb >>

mountains; it is a great mental and physical challenge. But after my illness and fighting it, I thought why not do it for a cause. Because while I was sick, I searched for people in a similar position and illness as mine but there were very few and none in the Middle East. I wanted to relate to someone who has UC or Crohn’s so I actually want to do the 7 summits to raise awareness about the disease. My next adventure is climbing Mount Elbrus (18, 510 feet) in the coming summer. What were the high and low points of your Mt. Kilimanjaro climb? The route I took was 6 days – the Machame route. You can do it in 6 or 7 or 8 days, I chose 6 days as it is more challenging. I kind of regretted it halfway through as I had altitude sickness. I was unable to keep anything down and I ended up getting food poisoning also on the 3rd day. We spent around 15/16 hours hiking, really hectic day and all I could have was tea. I have no idea how I managed it. There were people

64

65

just turning back around. But I had a goal and I kept moving, albeit at a slow pace. So I managed to summit. I and my teammates had a very emotional moment up there. I just started crying, I couldn’t control it. It was an enormous sense of accomplishment. I had been working on getting there for 2 years, to go through so much and get there has been a satisfying feeling. When did you decide to set up your Doaa page, and what are your goals? The page is named after my mother. The whole point of the summit was to raise awareness about UC and Crohn’s. Right now it is only a Facebook page and climbing Kilimanjaro was only the first step. It is a platform for people who have UC and Crohn’s to get in touch with each other and to know that you are not alone. We do not have the stats in Egypt, but I assume there are plenty of people out there who have Crohn’s and UC and

have been misdiagnosed. On the page, you can share your story, get in touch with me or meet me in person. I am looking to raise funds as the surgeries needed are really expensive. I have been in touch with a lot of doctors that are willing to help out. How important is it to you to be a support and inspiration for young people, irrespective of any health issues? Inspiration is such a big word. People have been so supportive ever since I started to tackle the illness and since starting the page. I am just very grateful for all the love and good wishes. It gets to a point where it motivates me to do more, to accomplish more. I believe that motivation comes from within and it was such a challenge to summit, it was really intense. I wanted to do it because at one point in my life I was helpless and climbing that mountain was my way of knowing that I could do anything. Refer to our address book

Keep Your Brain Sharp Top Tips For Improving your Memory By Nadia El Dasher

There was a time in my life that I remembered every friend’s and family member’s phone numbers, when I didn’t rely on my phone GPS to get around, and when my desk wasn’t buried under a pile of to-do lists. When did my memory become so unreliable? Is it simply a matter of aging, or is there anything that we can do to improve our memory?

A simple Google search reveals a slew of solutions, from eating right, to physical and mental exercises but a certain source stood out to me the most, a TED talk by Joshua Foer titled Feats of Memory Anyone Can Do. Foer unravels the inner workings of memory by examining the United States Memory Championship, and interviewing its contestants. The techniques he discovered all came down to a concept in psychology referred to as “elaborative encoding”. When two people are told to remember a single word “baker”, the one who is told to simply remember that there is a man whose name is Baker is less likely to remember the word than the person

66

67

who is told to remember that there is a man who is a baker. The reason behind this is that while the name Baker doesn’t really mean anything to us, but the common noun baker comes with a visualization of a baker, we can imagine his uniform, his actions, etc. It’s akin to the difference between a 2D image and a 3D image. Foer goes on to say,“the idea… is to create this imagined edifice in your mind’s eye, and populate it with images of the things that you want to remember -- the crazier, weirder, more bizarre, funnier, raunchier, stinkier the image is, the more unforgettable it’s likely to be.”

So we must actively engage with our environment in order to remember, and there are ways to exercise your memory thus improving it. Engage more than one of your senses Reading out loud is both visual and auditory, which can aid the memorization process. Stop multitasking Not only is multi-tasking associated with low efficiency in everyday activities, it also divides the brain’s limited attention, making it harder to retain information.

CAIRO EAST MAGAZINE FEATURE

Visualize uncommon scenarios At the beginning of Foer’s talk he asks the audience to close their eyes and visualize the story he is about to tell. This activates different parts of your brain, which aids the process of remembering. While imagining an uncommon scenario will also aid the memorization process since the bizarre both stands out and requires us to re-examine. Consolidate According to Foer’s talk, it is easier to remember something if it is memorized in a story-like fashion, which is similar to using mnemonic devices. Clench your fists Research indicates that balling up the right hand into a fist makes it easier to memorize numbers and lists. Neuropsychologist, Dr Joanna Iddon, adds that in order to retrieve the information, you clench the left fist as a means of activating that region of the brain. Experiment with retrieval practice A study by Morris et al. in 2005 showed that, unlike other forms of memory improvement, almost every member of the population can benefit from retrieval practice - the exercise of reminding yourself to remember. The more difficult the subject is to remember, the more practice you’ll need. Rest It may seem obvious, but getting enough sleep is a powerful tool for boosting brain function and, as a result, memory. Researcher Jack Mellor from the University of Bristol discovered that the brain organizes its everyday encounters during sleep,

recording only the essentials to memory. Learn before you sleep Studies have shown that information retention is most efficient if you do it right before sleeping. Eat chocolate

And the same can be said with regards to sleep deprivation and malnutrition. Socialize A simple way to reduce stress and depression, both of which are associated with memory loss, is to increase social interactions. Inhale rosemary oil

A team of healthcare professionals in Norway tested more than 2,000 people on memory, planning, attention as well as visual and spatial coordination after monitoring their dietary habits. The results showed that those who consumed 10 grams of chocolate per day got higher test results.

A study conducted at Northumbria University demonstrated similarities between the effects of compounds in rosemary oil and drugs licensed to treat dementia.

Exercise

Traditionally, forgetfulness is thought of as a side effect of growing old, however a 2013 poll found that millennials (18 to 34 year olds) are far more likely to forget their lunch, what day of the week it is, where they left their keys, and whether they showered or not than older age groups. In fact, the results showed that those 55 or older were more than two to three times more likely to remember the answers to these questions than millennials.

Aerobic exercise not only improves cognitive function, it’s also an approachable technique for enhancing memory. Exercise is also associated with the growth of the hippocampus, a sea horse-shaped part of the brain linked to memory. Learn new things According to scientist Sandrine Thuret, learning increases the production of brain cells. Learning another language, in particular, can be exceedingly rewarding. Research by Dr. Thomas Bak at the Edinburgh University showed that being bilingual may improve the aging brain, even if the second language was picked up at adulthood. Reduce Stress Thuret also states that stress can reduce the production of new brain cells, ultimately affecting memory.

Meditate According to a report in The Atlantic, students who meditated an hour a day for eight days did better on tests than those who did not.

The easiest place to observe this phenomenon is at a social gathering where people from all walks of life can almost instantly forget names of other guests. Perhaps the best place to start is with our lifestyles. By incorporating subtle changes at a young age not only will your memory improve, but you’ll be creating a suitable environment for the entirety of the brain to flourish. CAIROEASTMAG.COM

The accompanying vegetables were lightly cooked to perfection, and there was a choice of sauces to complement the meat if required. Unable to resist dessert we chose All-American Apple Pie with a crunchy almond topping served with vanilla ice-cream – a oldie but a classic. Other menu options that appealed: Lobster bisque, Pan-seared Scottish Salmon; Grouper with Ginger Lime Sauce, and Scampi. Beverages: A great selection of international fine wines and liqueurs; fresh juices, soft drinks, tea and coffee. They also mix a great pre-dinner cocktail.

Recipe

Man Made Fire… and then Man Grilled Outdoor BBQing brings out the primal in men; think of a Neanderthal bellowing, “Me man! Man make fire!”(Jury still out on whether Neanderthals actually spoke English). What do fire, smoke and raw meat have to do with men remains a mystery. However, if you think that grilling is as easy as putting raw meat on a lit up Weber Grill, then you are in need of Grill 101 . If you want to throw the best BBQ in your neighborhood, you will have to do a lot of prepping beforehand. First off, you need to start with the kind of meat. Make sure that the meat is not more than 100 gm and not thicker than 2 cm.

Now comes the most important part that will place you on the grill-map: the marinade. Whether you grill a steak perfectly or not, the marinade will always sway the verdict. People will leave your place thinking you made the best steak only because of its flavor. In order to make the perfect marinade, mix lots of different spices and sauces. Directions: •

Place soy sauce, olive oil, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, basil, parsley, and pepper in a blender.

Add hot pepper sauce and garlic, if desired.

Blend on high speed for 30 seconds until thoroughly mixed.

Pour your marinade on the meat and make sure you leave the meat soaked in it for not less than 8 hours.

According to your preference of doneness, leave the meat on the grill for a certain amount of time. If you like it rare, then leave it for a minute or two; for medium doneness, leave it for two to three minutes; for a well done piece, leave it for approximately four minutes.

Mezcal Fusion Peruvian-

Mexican Cuisine at The New President in Zamalek Following close on the heels of their madly successful Nikkei restaurant Izakaya in Sheikh Zayed, food guru brothers Tamer and Taymour Erian have just rolled out another not-to-bemissed eatery, this time in the heart of Zamalek. Even better news, fans of Izakaya will find some of their favorite dishes included in the menu at Mezcal. Concept: Just in case you were wondering, last year Peru was voted “The World’s Leading Culinary Destination” at the World Travel Awards. Over the passage of time, immigrants came to Peru, bringing with them diverse cuisines with a tantalizing range of flavors and textures. Spanish, indigenous, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, African, Creole and Amazonian cultural trends became the roots of Peruvian dishes that are gaining such popularity worldwide. Today, Peruvian cuisine has distinctive elements that can stand proudly alone, or merge equally well with other cuisines to form great fusion menus. Type of Cuisine: Upscale authentic Latino cuisine in a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. Mezcal excels in delivering taste sensations in bite-sized portions, beautifully presented in shareable plates. Peruvian chef, Lan, has obviously coached his team well. Lime-seared salmon and fish are skillfully blended with exotic fruits like mango and pineapple, or accented with more

90

91

piquant sauces and seasoning. Traditional Peruvian elements like the famed sweet potato, lime, corn and aji pepper bring total authenticity to every mouthful. The added twist comes in the range of Mexican specialties, again in easy to manage mouthfuls. Forget about your old Tex-Mex. This is the real thing, where the gastronomic legacy of Mexico can really shine. Décor: The clue comes as you wind your way up the curving staircase, with perfectly preserved marble steps contrasting with the midnight hue of the walls and ceiling. Upon entering the bar and restaurant itself, the inky indigo interior of Mezcal sets the mood. Think jacquard embossed walls, retro art deco furniture, with a sense of ‘now’ through the use of lush velvet and luxurious leather. Lighting continues the art deco theme, and is subtle and discreet. Once again, Greek interior designer Aphrodite has worked her magic to get a stunning result. The space is shared by two distinct yet complementary areas, the wellstocked bar with high seating around

handy tables, and the restaurant with more formal seating, lending itself to relaxed, but sophisticated dining. Ambiance: There is a definite mystique, an aura of sultry entitlement. A place to charm and be charmed; where secrets are shared; where history could be made. The mood is enhanced by background music streamed directly from c-burn music consultancy in London, the go-to people for the right sounds. Dishes Sampled: Comfortably ensconced at our table, we kicked off with signature spoons of sea bass and salmon ceviche. Flavors were fresh, tangy, fruity and complex, with high notes coming from the distinctive aji peppers, and Leche di tigre dressing. To follow up we nibbled on tiraditos, perfectly balanced mouthfuls of the freshest of fish and spices in combined textures. Plate after plate, we happily indulged to the max on quinoa salad, with punches of olive and fresh grapefruit, a trio of guacamole dips, served with fresh nachos. Then came tostadas of slow-braised beef, served on fried corn tortillas, and a variation with

it seems lies in the variety, and the steady flow of new offerings at just the right moment. Dessert was a deceptively healthysounding quinoa and chia seed pudding, lethally laced with a massive shot of Baileys. While we are sure that the boozefree option would be great as well, this was a dream combination for us.

shrimp, chili-mayo, mango, and a palate-teasing garnish of dehydrated pickled ginger. Quite apart from the amazing range and subtlety of the favors, we reveled in the visual artistry of each dish as it arrived. We couldn’t skip tacos, soft wheat tortillas stuffed with all sorts of delectable surprises. Salmon tartare teamed up superbly with guacamole and mango, and chicken with the Mexican answer to baladi salad hit the spot perfectly. Munching on beef and chicken empanadas with their crunchy sambousek-like casing, we wondered how we could have unashamedly worked our way through so many dishes. The trick

Thumbs up: At a time when a slight edge of panic is setting-in regarding availability of foreign produce in the market, Mezcal actually uses 80% local ingredients to create its world-class dishes. Chef Lan is impressed by the quality of locally grown quinoa, and other items like legumes which are a shared staple in both Peruvian and Egyptian cuisines. The stylish interior was decorated and furnished by local craftsmen, creating both original and reproduction designs, and the crockery is proudly made in Egypt.

Stepping into China Red’s intimate dining lounge gives you the impression of being in a movie set. The dominant red color sets the perfect oriental mood. We were greeted and seated in the hospitable Asian way and were promptly served a welcome (red) drink of grenadine and ginger. Chef Zhu is from Shanghai and the restaurant covers a variety of different cuisines from all over mainland china. We started the evening with soup, specially recommended by the maître. Hot and Sour Seafood Soup, which consisted of a fragrant and spiced broth, with chunks of bay scallops, shrimp, calamari and vegetables. The Shanghai soup is very famous in the Cantonese cuisine and is commonly known as Wonton Soup and it consists of Chinese dumplings filled with shredded chicken in a soup broth served with tiny dried baby shrimp. As for appetizers we chose the Steamed Chicken Dumplings, a wonton pastry filled with sesame flavored chicken filling;

Chinese buns – dim sum – which are bread rolls filled with minced beef and vegetables. All portions are comprised of 4 pieces and accompanied by the dual set of sweet chili and soy sauces. Our main dish Mixed Seafood Shandong is named after the coastal province in China where seafood is predominant in the cuisine. The dish consists of a selection of shrimp, calamari, scallops and white fish with chili

sauce, it arrived in a steaming, sizzling, hotplate, the air filled with the aroma of seasoned seafood. The dish serves two (highly recommended). Then came Sweet and Sour Chicken, deep fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce served with steamed rice. We finalized the evening with a plate of seasonal fruits presented in a basket of ice.
