The site is included in the City of Melbourne Heritage Overlay (HO85) where it is described as: historically significant as one of the earliest extant buildings in this part of Carlton, which has undergone substantial change since the time of its initial phase of construction in 1857. The Carlton Inn is of aesthetic significance as a good example of the Victorian period. The faรงade is relatively plain and generally indicative of the early to mid-Victorian period, though the parapet may date to the later Victorian period. The faรงade has a stucco finish but the original corner section may be partly stone.

Through the pictures taken at the site, it shows that elders were the majority group of people that usually have more memory about the site. Therefore, my proposal will first to consider the accesibility for the elderly.

Base on this analysis, it can make the design more appropriate, we can arrange the spaces more reasonably by identifying the numerous type of people that might go to the pub and knowing what kind of space should be offered on the site for the certain kind of people. Summary: - For elderdy and disabilities: provide access for those with physical restriction >> Ramps and seatings - For who want to meet new friend, group of people, 2 8 solo traveller, passer-by, couples and students: interaction should not hindered, in order to let them see each other face >> Gathering area - For who like to listen the music from a distance: need to provide a space with a certain distance from the live folk music >> Gathering space with a distance from the performing area.

T H E E L I Z A B E T H S T R E E T C AT C H M E N T M A P William creek, where currently known as Elizabeth Street, was originally a stream that flowed into the Yarra River. It was piped underground when the street was built. The area has always been a flood prone area, since it remains a natural low point and drainage line and is subject to inundation.

The Catchment includes both the Elizabeth Street drainage network and the Swanston Street drainage network. This is because when the Swanston Street drain is over capacity and water is flowing along the roads, water from Swanston Street runs downhill to Elizabeth Street.

42

According to Melbourne Water, the Elizabeth Street Catchment is being at Extreme Flood Risk – the highest level. Based on the diagram, it shows the site needs to storage 0.5-1ML amount of water.

SITE HISTORY BEER BREWING HISTORY 1852-1864 : A rough and ready frontier town with basic housing and a hard drinking culture. C A R LT O N B R E W E R Y 1864 - 1880: Brewing a better beer 1866/67 : Carlton Brewery was known for the best beer in the colony, with Carlton Ale winning a prize at the intercolonial Exhibition. RIDING THE BOOM 1868 : the old ramshackle wooden buildings along Bouverie Street were demolished and replaced with the two-storey bluestone building used for offices, stores and beer cellar, known as the ‘counting house’. 1870-1873 : Carlton Brewery underwent a building boom.Large storage cellars along Victoria Parade, stables for the fleet of horse-drawn wagons that delivered barrels of beer around the city, and an impressive three-storey brick brew tower to house new brewing equipment. RISING TO THE TOP 1880-1907 : Carlton Crewery ultimately becoming a major landmark in inner city Melbourne, defined by its prominent brew tower. Large cellars and stores were built at the corner of Ballarat and Bouverie Streets, and the offices extended along Bouverie Street. By the early 1900s : Carlton Brewery had extended over most of the city block. A B R AV E N E W W O R L D 1907-1987 : Carlton & United Breweries Workers’ Welfare Befor WW1, a brewery picnic was held each year in Sorrento, usually on the last Saturday in March. The picnics featured music, games, races and the popular tug-of-war competitions - usually won by the Carlton Brewery team. Inter-brewery cricket and football competitions continued right through to the 1930s. CHANGING FORTUNES - the recovery from the 1890s crash was slow, with many breweries left in financial trouble. 1987 : after 120 years of beer making, Carlton Brewery was closed and all operations moved to Abbotsford.

Queensberry Hotel Address 593-597 Swanston Street, Carlton Date/period: 1890/Late Victorian Building type: Commercial Grading C3 Significance What is Significant? The substantially intact late Victorian building, particularly the façade to both street frontages featuring decorative stucco work and the original configuration of openings (windows and doors). How is it Significant? The Queensberry Hotel is of historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Melbourne Why is it Significant? The Queensberry Hotel is historically significant as the site was one of the earliest to be developed in this part of Carlton. The extant building, initially a hotel and shop (southern part of Swanston Street), was designed in 1890 by the eminent architects Tappin, Gilbert and Dennehy to replace an earlier iron building comprising 14 rooms. (AHC Criterion A4) The Queensberry Hotel is of aesthetic significance as a substantially intact, Italianate style hotel of the late Victorian period. Elements of note include the decorative stucco work and the original fenestration (pattern of openings) which in many other cases have been modified. (AHC Criterion E2) The Pixel Building - Australia’s First Carbon Neutral Building Building type: Commercial Offices Project Objective: To design and construct the world’s first carbon neutral and water balanced office building with regard to both operational and embodied carbon emissions. Results: Modelled Perfect 105 point Green Star score (Australian GBC)105 out of 110 point LEED score (USGBC), ten points more than the previous best rated building.

I START FIRSH ON DESIGNING THE WATER DIRECTION, AND LET THE WATER LEAD THE FORM OF THE ENTIRE SITE, INSTEAD OF WHAT I DID IN ATTEMP#1 WHICH KIND OF LIMIT THE WAY ON THIS HUGE SITE. I ALSO MINIMISED THE PEDESTRIAN PATHWAYS TO BE MORE EFFICIENT IN DESIGNING. AND THIS PROPOSAL IS - TO CLEANSE THE POLLUTED WATER - TO PREVENT FLOODS - AFTER THE TWO PROBLEMS HAVE SOLVE, THATS THE TIME ALLOWS THE RECRETIONAL ACTIVITIES TO HAPEN ON THIS SITE

HOWEVER, I AM STILL NOT CONFIDENT ON MY DESIGN, I STILL FEEL THAT I MISSED SOMETHING THAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN I AM DESIGNING WETLAND. I QUICKLY DO A CHECKLIST THAT IF I AM DOING CORRECTLY . THEN.... I FOUND THERE WAS WETLAND NEEDS ABOUT 4 MICROPHYTE ZONES IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A NOTIONAL DETENTIOIN TIME ( USUALLY 48 TO 72 HOURS) FOR WIDE RANGE OF FLOW DEPTHS... :) THEN I START AGAIN BUT MAINTAIN SOME GOOD POINTS FROM ATTEMP#2.
