BODY & BEAUTY

Beauty tips from the experts help create a more beautiful you!

Update your Skin Care Regimen for Fall Your skin’s needs differ based on temperature and seasons. Your skin can appear dull and dry after a summer spent in the sun. To keep your skin looking its best, update your routine with these smart moves:

SMART SKIN MOVE #1: EXFOLIATE Exfoliation can remove the dull outer layer of skin, and unclog pores plugged by regular sunscreen use. But, be gentle with exfoliation: A mild scrub will do a fine job. Exfoliate only once or twice a week, and don’t get over-aggressive… vigorous scrubbing can scratch, tear, and damage skin, compromising the glow that gentle exfoliation provides. Another exfoliation option: Microdermabrasion or glycolic acid peels, done at your dermatologist’s office or here at Cal-a-Vie. These procedures are more effective and quicker at removing the superficial dead layer of skin. Our favorite exfoliates: GM Collin Glycolic or Lactic Peel at Cal-A-Vie. Yonka Guarana Scrub or Lifeline Skin Care Dual Action Exfoliator for home use.

SMART SKIN MOVE #2: SWITCH CLEANSERS

Your skin was probably a bit more oily than usual in the summer, due to heat and humidity, so a deeper-cleansing face wash was in order. But, come fall, when the heat begins to disappear, you need a gentler cleanser. Look for a cleanser, which removes dirt and impurities but doesn’t strip your skin’s natural oils. If you tend to be oily in the T-zone, apply an oil-free toner to that area after you cleanse. Our favorite cleansers: Yonka Lait Nettoyant Cleanser or Lifeline Brightening Cleanser utilizing the Clarisonic facial brush.

Reveal a Healthy Glow for Fall When we hop in the shower, most of us have a variety of hair and skin care products to select from - everything from moisturizing shampoos to soothing shaving creams. But among all of those options, do you have a good body scrub? An essential for maintaining healthy, smooth skin, body scrubs are a must-have on your shower menu. The combination of cleansing, exfoliation and massage provides benefits that go beyond what a bar of soap can do. After the summer months is an especially critical time to exfoliate.

SMART SKIN MOVE #3: SELECT A NEW MOISTURIZER Choose a basic moisturizer that contains vitamins A, C, and E, plus anti-oxidants. These ingredients neutralize the damaging toxins from the sun, and can help prevent further damage when summer is over. If your skin is dry, use your moisturizer all over your face at night. If your skin is oily, apply only to dry areas at night. During the day, apply a light sunscreen. Many moisturizers today contain rejuvenating ingredients such as glycolic acid and retinol. These ingredients can be helpful in giving skin luminosity but, they also can be drying, especially on mature skin. If you choose to use these products, apply them every other night, alternating with your moisturizer, to help keep the drying effects at a minimum. Stem cell technology is relatively new on the market and can provide amazing results. Our favorite serums and moisturizers: LifeLine Defensive Day Moisture Serum SPF 15 & Recovery Night Moisture Serum Duo or Transderma A and R. Yonka Hydra 1 Crème or Fluid Moisturizers. Contact the Beauty Department for any questions on your fall beauty regimen. Call 760-954-2464 or visit www.cal-a-vie.com to place an order.

Plus, your moisturizer will be better able to soothe and hydrate your skin. Another important benefit of using a scrub is how good it can feel in the moment. Being mindful of the refreshing texture against your skin and captivating scent that fills the shower allows you to enjoy the treatment as it’s happening—an experience that can lift your mood and affect your outlook as you continue your day or evening. Typically, a body scrub has larger exfoliating particles than a facial scrub as the skin on your body isn’t as delicate. Common ingredients in scrubs are salt, sugar and crushed nut shells, and some include chemical exfoliants, like alpha hydroxy and glycolic acids, which can help smooth and firm skin, and salicylic acid, which can help improve the appearance of blemishes or redness. Our favorite scrub: Belle Lucce Cranberry-Yuzu Sugar Scrub

A scrub works in a few ways: As you massage it over your body, the exfoliating granules help to slough off dead skin, and the rubbing action itself boosts circulation. This helps drain your lymph nodes by increasing blood flow to the skin’s surface. Bella Lucce products are available for purchase in the Boutique – Call 760-945-2476 to place an order or online at www.cal-a-vie.com

HEALTH & FITNESS

Make your workout more effective by following some of the latest tips for burning calories!

Bored with the gym? Get excited about

KETTLEBELLS!

If you’re one of the many still discovering kettlebells, here’s the gist: a kettlebell is a cast-iron weight that provides cardiovascular, strength and flexibility benefits via ballistic movements (accelerating and releasing of the weight). It can seriously cut down on your gym time! There’s a reason why so many people love kettlebell training. After all, who doesn’t want a total-body resistance and cardio workout that only takes half an hour? And even more surprising, an American Council on Exercise (ACE) study recently found that the average person can burn 400 calories in just 20 minutes with a kettlebell. That’s an amazing 20 calories a minute, or the equivalent of running a sixminute mile! What makes the workout so effective, especially when compared with traditional weights like barbells or dumbbells? It’s because you are using different planes of movement …instead of just going up and down, you’re moving side to side and in and out, so it’s much more functional. It’s like you move in real life, and kettlebells simulate that movement, unlike a dumbbell.

Work up a sweat with kettlebells & you can expect: • Increased Endurance • Fat Loss • Improved Core Strength • Firm and Lifted Glutes • Increased Lean Muscle Mass • Gains In Muscle Strength • Greater Flexibility, Balance, Coordination and Stability • Improved Sports Performance Like any piece of training equipment, kettlebells are only safe if used properly. When a kettlebell swing is done correctly, the inner stabilizing muscle of the core must fire properly to maintain the correct lower-back, trunk and neck posture, thus allowing the superficial core muscles – the abs and back – to safely perform the movement. There are many different sizes of kettlebells. Generally, the best weight for unconditioned beginners of kettlebell training should range from 4 kg to 8 kg for women and 12 kg to 16 kg for men. A lighter weight is recommended to use at first so you can focus on developing the proper technique. Many repetitions are used in kettlebell training, and for those who are unconditioned, using a heavier weight will cause you to tire easily and lose correct form. If you’re ready to jump on the kettlebell train, don’t just grab a weight and start swinging. Proper form is essential for ensuring you stay injury-free when performing kettlebell exercises. Start with light kettlebells, and visit a certified kettlebell trainer (check your gym to see if classes are offered) to learn the right way to train and to develop a kettlebell fitness routine.

Cal-a-Vie offers a Metabolic Magic class using a variety of kettlebell routines to challenge your body to adapt to a higher level of power, strength and endurance. Be sure to check it out during your next visit!
