designers. The contribution they have made to our architectural heritage is evident within these pages. We have concentrated mostly on residential projects this year and feature those who have shaped the rich legacy of domestic architecture. The whole picture is even more exciting. Architects, builders and landscape designers must be able to work as a team in order to provide a client with the perfect home and working as a team takes organization and skills that those featured in this issue have perfected. California is looked up to as a trailblazer in the world of architecture and I am proud to present this special issue to our readers.

Natural swimming pools (NSPs) offer environmentally-conscious consumers a responsible alternative to traditional swimming pools. No chemicals, sterilizers, or mechanical devices are used. With U.S. patents for the biological cleaning of swimming pool water, NSPs designed by California BioNova® Natural Pools are completely chemical-free, ecologically harmonious, and produce clear, clean water that is healthful and safe for swimmers and the environment. “Natural swimming pools use far less energy, have a smaller carbon footprint, and are more sustainable than traditional chemical pools,” says California BioNova® CEO Troy Becker . “NSPs promote biodiversity, restore native habitats, and can be seamlessly integrated with the surrounding landscape.”

featured in this guide is dedicated to the goal of transforming and enriching lives. Here in California, they are the heirs to a century-old tradition of fulfilling clients’ fantasies while satisfying practical needs. Working in harmony with view sites and the benign climate, they create environments to nurture the body and the soul, in a wide diversity of styles. We live in an era of standardization in which people dress alike, drive vehicles that are superficially similar, and use the same mechanical devices. That makes the home one of the last bastions of individuality. It allows the fortunate few who can please themselves to hire the best talent and create something unique. Many people prefer to play it safe and mimic whatever surrounds them, but there is no need to take such a passive approach. All of these architects have the skill to make a house stand out and fit in. They understand that the right scale, appropriate materials, a restrained palette and fine craftsmanship are crucial ingredients of any home, modern or traditional in form. DESIGNERS AND BUILDERS

Though architects have acquired new tools, employing software programs in place of T- squares and compasses, the art and craft of building homes has changed remarkably little in the past hundred years. Architects still love to sketch and construct physical models to test their ideas and demonstrate designs to clients. And, though owners may demand larger bathrooms and closets, their needs for shelter aren’t so different from those of their great grandparents. Sitting, eating, sleeping, and entertaining are consistent human activities. Adding home theaters and gyms, family rooms and saunas may double the size but not the essential purpose of a home. Servant spaces have shrunk and we spend more time outdoors, so houses are now more open, but older models can be adapted to serve today’s preferences. I live in an eighty-year-old apartment by Richard Neutra that is as liveble and modern in spirit today as it was when it was new. Exploring older neighborhoods provides delight and inspiration to architects and owners alike. It’s instructive to wander the streets and appreciate the extraordinary diversity of invention, home-grown and imported. Here you can find fanciful versions of

every historical style and brand of innovation. And no other place on earth has been so receptive to innovative talent. Back in the 1910s, the Greene brothers created Arts and Crafts bungalows for affluent midwesterners who wintered in Pasadena. Their Gamble house is open for tours and it reveals how the architects fused the traditional Japanese house with the local vernacular, combining stone, polished mahogany and Tiffany glass. Frank Lloyd Wright was another mid-westerner who saw southern California as virgin territory where he could create a new American architecture, inspired by pre-Columbian monuments. Few of his projects were realized, but the Hollyhock House, perched on a hill at the edge of downtown LA, demonstrates the scale of his ambition. Newly restored and re-opened for public tours, it is richly rewarding to the eye and the imagination. Equally impressive is the expanse of textured concrete blocks on the Ennis House in Los Feliz, though that can be seen only from the street that winds around it.

George Washington Smith designed this house-studio for himself in Santa Barbara in 1920. Photograph by Mark Lohman. LEFT The tasting room of the Odette Estate Winery in Napa Valley, a sustainable design by Signum Architecture. ABOVE

A third favorite that still has the power to shock is the house-studio that Wright’s protegé, R.M Schindler, built for himself in 1922 in what is now West Hollywood. Its tilt-up concrete walls, redwood joinery and canvas screens are raw and elemental, its free-flowing interiors are light-filled and serene; generations of architects have found it to be a fount of fresh thinking. The Kings Road house has been lovingly preserved, and hosts exhibitions and events that celebrate the radical ideas of Rudolph and Pauline Schindler. The tradition of innovation was sustained from the 1920s on by Schindler and Neutra (a fellow Austrian emigré) and their protegés, by the post-war Case Study House program, Morphosis, Frank Gehry and a host of contemporaries. That surge of creativity co-exists with the reinterpretation of time-honored models, giving everyone a free choice of how to house themselves and their families. Every new house adds another stitch to the urban fabric and the best architects are master weavers. CH

Appleton Architects THIS AWARD WINNING ARCHITECTURAL FIRM IS AGAINST REPETITION AND IN FAVOR OF DIVERSITY

Appleton Partners LLP - Architects was established in 1976 and has offices in Santa Monica and Santa Barbara, California. The firm specializes in the planning, design and landscaping of custom projects for both private and public clients. Projects include additions, restorations, and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings as well as new construction. Appleton Partners LLP has been extensively published in major design periodicals and has won numerous awards and competitions. Partners Marc Appleton and Ken Mineau and Senior Associate Andrew Scott are supported by a team of project architects and managers for each project. The staff works closely with them from the initial phases through the completion of construction, handling the administrative services as well as the development of the design into detailed construction documents. With the assistance of various professional consultants in allied fields, practice is able to provide comprehensive services for each project. The firm’s design philosophy has always been against repetition and in favor of diversity. Their clients, their client’s dreams, and the sites they choose to build on are all different, and should therefore require from the architect different responses. It is questionable whether any architect should consider the commission for a custom house to be primarily an opportunity to express him or herself – unless of course it is their own home. Architecture may be a sculptural art for some, but for Appleton Partners, as William Wurster wisely noted, it is “the picture frame, and not the picture.” Appleton Partners LLP - Architects | 1556 17th Street | Santa Monica, CA 90404 | 310.828.0430 117 W. Paul Brant Williger THIS CALIFORNIA ARCHITECT HAS A REPUTATION FOR ORDER, RESOLUTION AND BEAUTY For more than three decades, Paul Brant Williger has dedicated his talents to fulfilling the residential requirements and dreams of a host of discriminating high-end clients. The reputation he has built is that of a gifted architect with a proven ability to engage with patrons in such a way as to permit them to articulate and realize their own visions. Williger began his career in the office of Robert A.M. Stern and, like Stern, displays a keen understanding of the requisites for luxury living, his bespoke skills having been honed in the affluent enclaves of Southern California, from Laguna Beach and Montecito to Malibu and Beverly Hills. Although known for his fluency in a number of architectural traditions, Williger is not one to place style over substance. “The signature or brand is not crucial for me. What is important is that I have realized my clients’ desires and gone beyond their expectations. That’s when I know I have done my job.” This mantra has served him well and has been one of the keys to his building the exclusive and discerning client base that has followed him to his namesake architectural firm, Paul Brant Williger. Williger creates residential visions that have superior architectural resonance while fully supporting the lives of the people who live there. “You can’t lose sight of the poetry you’re striving for,” he says, “but along the way there are many prosaic and bureaucratic steps that must be addressed. My clients come to me because they know that along the way we will navigate that process without losing sight of the aesthetics. Paul Brant Williger Architect | 110 N. THIS ST. HELENA–BASED FIRM USES A FRESH AND SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO EVERY PROJECT RESULTING IN MODERN AND TIMELESS DESIGNS In 2011, partners Jarrod Denton and Juan Carlos Fernandez (who initially met while working for the same architecture firm in Napa) launched St. Helena–based Signum Architecture, specializing in private residences, wineries, and commercial design. Five years later, the firm has amassed a long list of projects including Hall Winery in Napa (the first LEED Gold winery in the state), modern farmhouses in Sun Valley, Idaho, and commercial buildings such as the Pacific Union College Library in Angwin, California. “The best part about our job and designs, is the freedom that our clients allow us for creativity and originality on their projects, and on top of that, the responsibility to make them functional and sustainable,” adds Fernandez. “This constant reinventing of our ‘architectural style’ keep our minds and souls alive and hungry for more projects.” Signum Architecture | 1050 Adams Street, Suite D | St. Helena, CA 94574 | 707.963.8831 | www.signumarchitecture.com

NMA Architects

NMA ARCHITECTS ‘DESIGNING A LIFESTYLE FROM THE INSIDE OUT’ Dave Mendro & Mary Andrulaitis, partners at NMA, have been designing homes for Santa Barbara locals for more than 25 years. “Our credo has always been to design around our client’s lifestyle. And especially in such a beautiful place like Santa Barbara, clients want to be connected to their outside environment just as much as the inside”. Dave, who grew up in rural Montana, understands this first hand. “Being sympathetic to the local area makes sure that our design work is sensitive to the environment and truly creates a sense of place. Now, as old school locals, we nurture close ties with our community, local agencies, design consultants and builders and our clients really benefit from these relationships”. This culture has attracted a diverse team of passionate, talented people at their Carpinteria studio. “We believe it helps us all evolve as professionals and discover new and exciting innovations. It’s how we keep our approach fresh and unique for each and every project, no matter what the scale.” They’re with their clients every step of the way. As Mary says, “We know from experience that only a truly collaborative relationship with our clients, from the first meeting all the way through construction, helps us bring their vision home. After all, that’s what inspires us to get out of bed everyday.” Neumann Mendro Andrulaitis Architects | 888 Linden Avenue | Carpinteria, CA 93013 | 805.684.8885 | www.nmaarchitects.com

Michael Lee Architects THIS ARCHITECTURAL FIRM PROVIDES UNIQUE AND DRAMATIC SOLUTIONS

Since its inception in 1991 Michael Lee Architects has focused on the design and construction of primarily residential projects throughout the Los Angeles Basin. Serving as the principal architect or in collaboration with others, the firm has been honored by the American Institute of Architects and published internationally. The current portfolio includes residential, mixed-use, office rehabilitation and restaurant work with the priority remaining always on providing unique and dramatic architectural solutions. This 6700 sq ft single-family residence sits on the “Carla Rim” in the Trousdale Estates section of Beverly Hills. The house is unusual in that, though it is all on one level, the entire southern side of the house opens to dramatic city and ocean views. The kitchen, living room, and family room look across a private courtyard and a mosaic lined infinity pool toward Catalina Island and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Varying roof and ceiling planes with clearstory windows between them delineate the interior spaces, and skylights illuminate the interior of the house, providing an ever changing show of light and shadow throughout the day. RLB Architecture THIS AWARD-WINNING FIRM TURNS DREAMS INTO REALITY

RLB Architecture is an award winning architectural firm based in Pacific Palisades, California, specializing in custom remodels and new residential design. For thirty years, its founder, Richard Blumenberg, AIA, LEED AP, has helped homeowners turn their dream house into a reality by creating warm, welcoming and richly detailed residences that are flooded with natural light in a variety of architectural styles. The firm’s work results in classic houses of great beauty that are practical, delivered on time and on budget. An expertise in remodels enables RLB Architecture to solve the problems and realize the opportunities that are inherent in a remodel project. Know Thy Builder HOMES ARE STILL BUILT BY HAND TEXT BY RICHARD LORING

W

E L I V E I N A T I M E when nearly all the essential products we use to live are created by hands or machines we never see. Think of your mobile phone, your car, the shirt on your back, all made by invisible hands, or machines in some factory on the other side of the planet. Now think about your home, particularly if it has been custom built just for you. If you’re in the least bit curious, you’ve not only met your builder, but you’ve met the folks who poured the foundation, framed the walls, installed the electrical wiring and set the tile in your shower; you get the idea. While we’re surrounded by objects created by invisible hands, the most important object in our lives, our homes, have been created by hands we know. In an age of computers, technologically advanced cars, magical medicines and “advanced metrics”, our homes are still built by hand, by craftspeople doing things the way they’ve essentially been done for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years.

The construction process is virtually the last important piece of our everyday lives that still retains a character our great grandparents would easily recognize. Is there some lesson in this little homily? Well, it’s important to remember these are human hands creating your home, not machines programed for absolute perfection. Can the tradesperson’s hands create something of great beauty? Yes, but any artist worth their salt will tell you within great beauty lies some sort of imperfection; think Lauren Hutton and that wonderful gap between her two front teeth, or closer to Los Angeles the Watts Towers, the most imperfect object of artist perfection in Los Angeles. Your new home can never be as perfect as your new BMW, or that new Boeing 777 rolling off the assembly line, and it shouldn’t be. Your new home is the ultimate “crafts” object and you should never forget the thousands of hands that have collaborated to bring together this ancient object, your new home. CH

Corbin Reeves Construction CORBIN REEVES CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES TO HELP THEIR CLIENTS RECEIVE THE CUSTOM HOME OF THEIR DREAMS Approaching three decades in the home building industry gives Michael Reeves an intimate knowledge of his craft. His firm, Corbin Reeves Construction, was founded on a desire to combine his myriad of passions. “I wanted to be a carpenter, then an architect, a developer, a general contractor, and then I realized that home building encompasses something in each of those,” he says. “The process of creating is what motivates me.” Building various architectural styles and locations throughout Southern California – from an ultramodern home in the Hollywood Hills, an authentic French château on the ocean to an Italian cliffside villa overlooking the ocean – Reeves and his team possess experience in precisely executing the client’s vision and fulfilling their dream. “At this stage I like to do projects that are unique and challenging,” he says. “I enjoy learning about the latest products and designs and implementing them.” A philosophy based on a collaborative spirit has resulted in a steady stream of impressive clients and residences for Corbin Reeves Construction. Whether the project is traditional or contemporary, the firm aims to meet the client’s needs and the architect’s vision. Currently a majority of Reeves’ projects are second and third homes, commissioned by clients who trust him to execute their vision while they reside elsewhere. “My favorite part of a project is revealing the end product to the client, especially when they have been gone for months and haven’t seen much of the construction process,” he enthuses. “When we do an unveiling, they are often moved to tears. That is an extraordinary moment for us.” Corbin Reeves Construction | 3199-A2 Airport Loop | Costa Mesa, CA 92626 | 714.540.3700 | www.corbinreevesconstruction.com

The Perfect Team HOW TO PUT TOGETHER AN INTEGRATED DESIGN AND BUILD TEAM TEXT BY MARGIE GRACE

I

F YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT BUILDING A

or taking on a major remodeling project, trying to figure out how to get the best house, making the most of your site and the best value for your dollar, looking for high quality craftspeople to bring your vision to fruition and wanting to keep your environmental footprint light? If any of these topics are of concern to you, then consider putting together an integrated design and build team at the onset of the project. Falling by the wayside is the linear approach to creating your dream home, which typically looks something like this: you hire an architect to design the residence, then hand the house plans to a general contractor who builds it, and then seek out a landscape architect or designer to figure out the garden on what little budget remains. Many opportunities, efficiencies and economies of scale can be lost with this approach… and you can have some unwelcome surprises along the way as the project is taken off course by previously unthought-of details that come as each subsequent consultant/builder comes on board. Avoid these pitfalls (and money pits) by bringing together an integrated team of N EW H OM E

design and construction professionals at the beginning of the project: architect, builder and landscape architect at a minimum, plus site engineer, interior designer, landscape contractor and others, as dictated by your project’s scope of work. Each discipline has an impact on the overall outcome of the design and function of the finished project. Each team member understands the options, requirements and constraints inherent in the proposed project as pertains to his or her field. And you, the homeowner, best know your goals, lifestyle and budget. Once you’ve assembled your team, vetting professionals as you interview them to make sure each is on board with the collaborative approach, all of the components of the project are put on the table and the team works together to find the best fit for your specific needs, site-given needs and any requirements dictated by local ordinance or agencies. This holistic approach results in a beautiful home seamlessly integrated to the site, with cost savings, increased value and function and fewer surprises along the way. CH
