JENNIE NUNN Welcome to Spring in California. April showers in Southern California after three months of very little rain. Where is El Niño? Still, the Santa Ynez Valley is green with miles of orange poppies covering the hills, to the north the Sierras are packed with snow and the wine country fields are no longer golden. This issue highlights several homes we call the “New Traditional,” a refreshed look at classic design, with an eclectic mix of new furniture and fabric designs in soft colors and textures. Recent auction house sales show a prominent trend towards “Classic Design.” After a proliferation of mid-century modern this past year, we feel it is invigorating to feature a current take on traditional design. With the states varied terrain, architecture, and interior design, we want to continue publishing projects representing the California lifestyle from Traditional to Modern. Spring is the season of Design Showcase Houses and the LCDQ Legends. Beginning on page 50 in this issue, we provide information on each in our Events & Affairs section. The L.A. Convention Center holds Dwell on Design in June. The 36th Annual Auction Napa Valley, the American Wine Classic, hosted by the Napa Valley Vintners takes place from June 2-5, a must for you food and wine lovers. Named one of the ten great hospitality photographers by Hospitality Design Magazine, Dennis Anderson is an internationally published tribal art, commercial and residential photographer whose fine art photography is represented in the permanent collections of both the New York Museum of Modern Art and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is still exploring the world with his camera as his mentor Imogene Cunningham encouraged him to do. See his story on Atherton Gardens beginning on page 62.

For forty years Alexander Vertikoff’s award winning images have been on hundreds of covers and articles in publications such as the The New York Times, and Architectural Digest. His photography has been on the cover of every issue of American Bungalow Magazine (87 and counting). He has been the principal architectural and promotional photographer for the J. Paul Getty Trust’s Villa and Center, the Gamble House, Pebble Beach Resorts, the Driehaus Museum, and the Skirball Cultural Center. Vertikoff has over 15 books, and is the first foreign artist to have a traveling exhibit of his photographs in The People’s Republic of China. Now through June 16, 3016 —The Irvine Museum presents The Nature of Water: Our Most Precious Resource. The exhibition serves a dual purpose; it presents a selection of superb California landscape paintings and it makes the museum visitor aware of one of California’s historically scarce and precious resources, water. The exhibition features 60 works by 32 artists that documents the perpetual natural cycle of water in the atmosphere. Water exists in nature in three physical states, liquid (water), solid (ice), and gas (water vapor). The water cycle describes how a fixed quantity of water has remained the same for hundreds of millions of years. The amount of water on Earth is constantly refreshed by being cycled through the ocean, sky, and land over and over again. Enameling — the art of fusing glass to metal through a high-temperature firing process — gained widespread popularity in the United States in the last half of the 20th century. In the first decades of the 21st, artists throughout the country continue to explore enamel in a variety of forms, finding new meaning and rich expressive potential in the vibrant color and layered depth of this time-honored medium. Organized by the Los Angeles-based Enamel Arts Foundation, Little Dreams in Glass and Metal includes 122 works by 90 artists from the foundation’s collection of modern and contemporary enamels. Little Dreams in Glass and Metal is supported by the Windgate Charitable Foundation, the McLeod Family Foundation, and other generous contributors. Laguna Art Museum is a museum of California art. It collects, cares for, and exhibits works of art that were created by California artists or represent the life and history of the state. Unlike any other museum in the state, it collects California art and only California art, and ranges across all periods and styles, nineteenth-century to present-day. The Laguna Art Museum is proud to present City Life, Los Angeles: 1930s to 1950s. This exhibition focuses on urban scenes of Los Angeles by the group of artists—most members of the California Water Color Society—who were the leading proponents of “American Scene” painting in California. Now through June 26 2016, the USC Pacific Asia Museum (USC PAM) will present Royal Taste: The Art of Princely Courts in 15th-Century China, an exhibition that considers the lives of nobility in late imperial China. The exhibition explores the luxurious lifestyles and religious practices of princely courts in early- and mid-Ming China (1368–1644) and features more than 140 outstanding works of pictorial, sculptural, and decorative arts. At USC PAM, Royal Taste is presented in three sections. The first area features gold, silver, and jade objects from the tombs of regional princes. A second section showcases objects related to the lifestyle of nobility, such as textiles, ceramics, and paintings. Marking the 100th anniversary of Georgia O’Keeffe’s (1887-1986) debut in New York, this major retrospective will explore the profound importance of this icon of American modernism by reassessing her place in the canon of 20th century art. Featuring over 100 major works, the exhibition spans the six decades in which O’Keeffe was at her most productive, charting the progression from her early abstract experiments to her late works and dispelling persistent clichés about the artist and her painting. A highlight of the exhibition will be O’Keeffe’s celebrated Jimson Weed, White Flower No. 1, on loan from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas. SUSAN HABLE’S CREATIVITY CAN NOT BE HARNESSED
—from drawings and paintings to textiles to accessories, and most recently a furniture line for Hickory Chair, as well as a book, A Colorful Home. She is forever designing, developing and pushing her own boundaries. Inspired by the natural beauty of Texas, where she was born and raised, her career took shape through drawing and painting, which quite organically led to textile design. “All of our patterns are based off of art that is painted in the studio,” she says. “We manipulate our motifs to create dynamic and unique pattern structures.” She now has hundreds of patterns—all of which remain true to her self-described signature style of lively and sophisticated creations. In 1999, Susan and her sister Katharine Hable founded SPRING 2016 | 55

Hable Construction, an e-commerce site that features her textiles and products that incorporate them. “We aim to make colorful, thoughtful product for the person who appreciates design and a natural hand,” she says. Offerings include totes, pillows, storage boxes and whatnots—journals, fabric-covered horseshoes, even cots; think summer outdoor reading and napping! “The online shop is an extension of our retail shops that we closed once I moved to Athens, Georgia, where I am currently based,” she notes. “We wanted to remain accessible to our customers.” They went on to partner with Hickory Chair in 2011 on the industry’s first exclusive fabric collection, Hable for Hickory Chair, which led to an exclusive pillow collection in 2013. They continued their fruitful partnership and in 2015 introduced a furniture line featuring

modern bedroom, dining room and living room pieces inspired by mid-century modern and Scandinavian designs, world history, travel, contemporary art and textiles. Ever prolific and vibrant, they are launching a second collection this fall with a focus on upholstery and case goods. All told, Hable for Hickory Chair will count sixty pieces by the end of the year and is available through Witford at Pacific Design Center and Laguna Design Center. Her collaboration with Hickory Chair has resulted in collections that exude the melding of an innovative artist with a classic brand. Walnut and maple, gold and white brass, rich linen velvets and wovens, all work together to bring Hable’s signature distinct lines and strong forms to life through furnishings. “I hope to have created some iconic pieces to be passed down for generations,” she says. of paper, pen and scale, I am so thrilled!” says Laurie Haefele, who was formally trained as an architect, but quickly fell into kitchen design, as well as baths and boutique wardrobes, by accident. “I consider kitchens mini versions of architecture.” Having steadily and healthily grown her Santa Monica-based firm, Haefele Design, since its inception in 2002, admittedly, she can no longer sit down, sketch and create into the small hours of the night as she once did. Yet now when she does “my designs are more vibrant and exciting because they are held in and it feels almost like they burst on the page,” she notes.

A dive into her portfolio, which she has been curating since she first started designing in 1990, proves her proficiency in a myriad of styles from high-tech to old world, however, she notes that she is becoming known for her clean aesthetics. Having graduated from Pratt Institute with a Bachelor’s in Architecture, and received a Master’s degree in architectural history and theory from UCLA, her designs are strongly influenced by her education, as well as her tenure at famed architectural firm Gwathmey Siegel Kaufman Architects, formerly Gwathmey Siegel Architects. A valuable lesson that she has learned, “There is not just one way to lay out and design a space,” she shares. “For example, often the focal wall is the one with a hood and range, but some spaces have multiple focal walls. Or maybe the view is the feature, so you would install glass windows versus upper cabinets.” Haefele prides herself on securing mostly repeat and referred clients, and regularly
partners with renowned architects such as James Magni and Richard Landry. “These days, clients are very much looking to have kitchens be communal—where they can be with their friends and family” says Haefele, “while bathrooms are to be more spa-like and peaceful.” In both cases, everything must have a place and a purpose. “Listen to your clients and pay special attention to their needs. It is easy to design a beautiful environment. It is much more difficult to make it functional for that specific family.” For Haefele personally, she currently considers her dining room more of the hub for her and her five-and-a-half year old adopted son. “He loves to help me cook,” she says, “and while I know the value of teaching him cooking skills, his age is such that sitting down to the meal is less stressful for his Mom than cooking it!” CH

THE ATHERTON GARDEN A peek into the grounds of one of Northern California’s most stunning private estates reveals a magical convergence of nature and design BY ERIKA LENKERT

THE EXCLUSIVE COMMUNITY OF ATHERTON, an incorporated town just
north of Menlo Park in Silicon Valley, may be best known for its expansive estates, but insiders know it’s also home to one of the most stunning private outdoor oases in Northern California. Referred to by those who’ve worked on it simply as “the Atherton Garden,” the nearly four-acre expanse, which surrounds an equally stunning 18,000-foot home, was originally designed by bygone legendary Bay Area landscape architect Walter Guthrie. Through the years, his intent—to celebrate the owners’ interest in architectural and art history—has continued with the help of several Bay Area talents. Nearby, a woodland path leading from the ruins of the rustic folly leads to a gazebo, playfully referred to as “the Gloriette.” Built on the ruin of an earlier building, it was designed to be evocative of children’s stories and reflect the client’s fondness for children’s literature. Most influential was a 2003 renovation by Magrane & Associates, which approached a remodel as an “evolutionary entity,” with the idea of making the garden look as if it had evolved into its present form. As such, the south lawn area, established to accommodate tents for large social SPRING 2016 | 63

events and entertaining, includes rustic folly built on the remnants of walls that formed part of an earlier structure. As a garden feature, the rustic folly is the focus of several garden circuits and the visual focus of the family entrance to the house. It draws the eye into the garden from the family’s private door, while red leaf plants add depth and a sense of mystery and palms add an exotic note that’s in keeping with the historic precedent. The bold garden design for the front of the house was also inspired by the past, taking its cue from Salisbury, England’s historic Hatfield House as it was portrayed in the 1992 film Orlando; only here, rather than gravel at the ground plane with the topiary box cones, which would have been French-inspired, Magrane & Associates employed turf to accommodate the client’s Anglophile leanings. As the estate evolved so did its influences, with Segale & Cerini stepping in to update and maintains the plantings that exist today. But throughout its evolution, there has been one constant: ornamental appointments by Christian Wright of interior design firm Wright-Simpkins. Wright, who also oversaw all of the estate’s interior

design, is responsible for all of the enviable sculptures and ornamental features throughout the estate, which have been collected throughout the years from all over the world. Regarding his selections, he explains, “We wanted something that was very traditional, which would reflect the interiors of the house and capture the idea behind an English garden with outdoorroom spaces and focal points with sculpture.” Wandering the captivating grounds, it’s clear these intentions have been brought to life. OR JOAN AND KEVIN KNEE, owners of a 7,000-square-foot oceanfront home in secluded Sandyland Cove about 10 miles from Montecito, acquiring their current residence doesn’t involve a conventional real estate story. After all, it’s not every day that the house next door goes up for sale. The Indian Wells couple, who at the time occupied the home next door—still used as a guest house for visiting family and friends—decided to buy the adjacent home, and make it their primary summer residence. The Knees, along with their four children, Bob, 21, Eddie, 17, Jacqueline, 17, and Theresa, 16, entirely rebuilt the adjacent house to fit their needs, and looked to longtime friend and interior designer Monique Lafia of Lafia/Arvin, A Design Corportation in Pacific Palisades, who had coincidentally designed the couple’s existing residence ten years prior. “I’ve known the clients for more than 10 years, and it was extremely rewarding to be working with them again,” says Lafia of the residence situated along the ocean in the exclusive gated community with 37 residences. “We wanted to make it light, and bright and happy, with many different tones of blues reflecting the ocean. Comfort [and coziness] was the main

objectives, and to create a house that the family will continue to grow into and enjoy for many years to come.” For the California beach-inspired, LEED-certifed home awash in a fresh palette of blues, taupes, and ivory, no detail was spared down to the cabinetry and the finishes (all designed by Lafia), and high-tech features such as automated drapes and fireplaces that are controlled by a wall-mounted Ipad. The furniture throughout the house is also multi-functional. In the living room, a large, weathery oak coffee table topped with a parquet top is paired with ottomans that tuck under the table for use as extra seating. “It’s forgiving, and you don’t have to worry about putting a drink down and leaving a scratch. It’s that type of house,” adds Lafia of the home peppered with limestone fireplaces from Exquisite Surfaces and eye-catching, seainspired objects such as art from flea markets and a 1920s, French Coquillage shell mirror from Cache in Los Angeles that flanks the front entry. “When you’re at the beach, as a designer I pictured walking in and out and the sand, so I stayed away from fabrics like silks. Now, they can come in and out with sand on their feet. This is a true family home where they spend the

summer, and it’s elegant, cozy, and comfortable at the same time.” Lafia also layered the space with touches to reflect the family including a custom-built bookcase with designated shelves for each of the family members stocked with books according to individual interests and passions from horseback riding and old cars to golf and basketball. She also created a collage wall in the hallway replete with 20, charcoal-framed photos of the four children at the beach spanning the decades in a then-to-now arrangement. “It truly does reflect their lifestyle,” adds Lafia, who also outfitted the exterior lined with three, distinct zones for dining, entertaining, and lounging, with comfy, wicker furniture by Janus et Cie. “It’s the kind of house where whatever is going on in your life, you can sit right in the living room, and you feel like you’re just one with the ocean, and you don’t want to leave. It flows, and it’s very rhythmic, and this is the kind of space where you walk in, and your shoulders drop, and you say, ‘ah.’ It’s that type of feeling.” CH

located in Presidio Terrace, San Francisco interior designer Kendall Wilkinson of KWD selected an aquatic color palette inspired by her clients’ collection of abstract art. The shingled Arts and Crafts styled house showcases a proportionate living room. Against a backdrop of soft cream paneled walls and beamed ceiling Wilkinson placed a pair of custom sofas upholstered in Rose Tarlow’s rich mohair, Lugano, color Blue Lagoon. Following the room’s symmetry, a pair of 19th century Baltic three drawer commodes flanks the massive fireplace. Conrad Woven Shades in bleached flax hang over triple French doors filtering sunlight from the verdant park. The designer installed an early twentieth century indigo and ivory Kerman carpet to ground the space. While a formal dining room lies adjacent to the living room, the philanthropic couple with two small children and a menagerie of animals spends much of their time in the airy great room with gourmet kitchen, breakfast nook and

fireplace. The large island surmounted by a honed granite counter centers the kitchen illuminated by an iron and giltwood chandelier. Pearlescent tile backdrop and polished chrome fixtures provides subtle glamour. In an intimate eating nook, Queen Anne styled dining chairs upholstered in sea foam green fabrics mingle with Dennis & Leen’s Spanish Dining Table in a medium walnut finish. Ascending a grand oak paneled staircase leads to the private rooms on the second level. The floor includes three bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, media room, and sitting room. Wilkinson resumed the marine color scheme in the guest room with blue gray walls accented by sea grass green. shades dress the corner windows. A grouping of a late 19th century dove gray painted writing desk and vintage elm armchair looks out on the forest of pine, cypress and eucalyptus trees. Wilkinson, the mother of two boys excels at children’s rooms. For the home’s fanciful nursery, she hung Ironies’, Jolie Chandelier in silvered iron and mirror with sea glass beads from the vaulted and beamed ceiling. A sophisticated color scheme of pale coastal blues and greens allows the bedroom to grow up with the child. The designer thoughtfully added an occasional chair for late night feedings. The Louis XVI Barrelback Bergere from Minton-Spidell finished in worn white paint and upholstered on the inside back and seat in a durable Glant Textile. When the couple wants to escape, they climb the main staircase to their spacious master suite. Occupying the entire top floor, it includes a master bath, walk in closet, home office, balcony, landscaped roof terrace, and hot tub. From this venue they enjoy views not only of the Presidio but also the bay and ocean which inspired their abstract art collection and Wilkinson’s design. CH

is apparent even from the exterior by its characteristic Italian design: wellproportioned work in iron and stone perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. “My late husband Nick and I traveled to Italy several times and he has family there. They showed us a slice of Italy that we wouldn’t have seen on our own,” says Reed. It was through their visits that the Reeds decided to build an Italian-inspired house of their own. “Architect Homer Oatman is famous for his ability to design houses in the regional Italian styles, particularly Tuscan,” says Reed. “He shared ideas, pictures, art from Italy with me and his passion for the country came through.” “I try not to impose my ego on my clients’ projects,” explains Oatman. “I strive to design the best house possible to meet their goals, their vision and their aspirations. I tread lightly when I suggesting alternative ideas. After all, it is their home, not mine.” This willingness to work well with clients is evident in his many repeat clients. Reed, for one, can’t stop raving about him. The challenge for Oatman was to design Reed her dream house that was not only traditional but practical and modern since she often uses it to entertain members of Girls Incorporated of Orange Country, a charity that’s vitally important to her since it helps girls from ages 5 through 18 get an education. She was on the Board of Directors for 12 years and is still involved with their support groups. New houses can take many years to settle into their landscapes, but this 6,500-square-foot house fits into the neighborhood perfectly. mahogany entry door with shuttered windows from an old Italian house sets the stage for what is to come, a welcoming open kitchen. “I always wanted an open kitchen,” says Reed. “It even has a walled pizza oven that Homer talked me into. That was something my late husband wanted since he was quite the pizza maker. I wanted this to feel like grandmother’s kitchen.” Besides working closely with Oatman, Reed also collaborated with interior designer Karen Ziccardi, ASID, CID and general contractor, Mike Reeves of Corbin Reeves Construction throughout the design and construction of the project. “I had worked with Gena on the interior design of her first custom-built house built on this same site,” says Ziccardi. “She is a rare and forthright woman and a great partner in problem solving and, bonus, fun.” Gena had definite ideas about the design direction of her home so they all worked together to achieve the Italian country influences that she wanted. One example of this was the way Ziccardi displayed Reed’s collection of Italian

pottery in the kitchen. Attention to detail is evident wherever one looks throughout. The house resonates with the mellow limestone, reclaimed celling beams and the reclaimed French walnut floor. Mike Reeves, who has built several of the homes Oatman has designed brought together a team of talented craftsmen to achieve Gena’s vision of a house that was constructed and detailed as historically correct as possible within the constraints of local codes and contemporary construction methods and materials. His team included George and Richard Chiarini of Chiarini Marble and Stone who carved several custom stone pieces including mantles, sinks and bathtubs. Gerald Olesker of Architectural Detail Group, Inc, designed and fabricated custom lighting fixtures as well as finding original Murano glass fixtures which were strategically located through the house. Matt Meyers of Young Ideas Construction installed all the exterior and interior stone wall cladding, and brick valued ceilings. “I am a fanatic when it comes to authentic stone design and installation,” says Oatman. “Matt and his team take incredible pride in their work and they are one of the few masons in southern California I know of who can pull it off to my satisfaction. Another hallmark of Oatman’s designs are their stairways. “The stair should be unique, captivating and creative, but never ostentatious in a Tuscan design,” he says. The staircase in Reed’s house is a focal point and one that she says she loves looking up at every day. Both Oatman and Ziccardi agree that at the end of the day the best reward for their work is to see their clients smile and say, “This is home.” CH

Santa Barbara seaside spots, the waterfront Mesa— where a boardwalk and park give way to bluffs, which tower over a generous beach—sits a recently completed Craftsman-style beach house with endless views of the Pacific Ocean. Sunlight floods the two-bedroom, two-bath cottage-like house built by contractor Brian Zimmerman of Zimmerman Construction and designed by his late father renowned local architect James J. Zimmerman of Zimmerman Architects. The later, over his forty-five year career, remained dedicated to maintaining the architectural integrity of his community—while designing icons the like of Santa Barbara’s Stearns Wharf and renovating the Santa Barbara Yacht Club—and there is no shortage of that commitment in the retreat that marks his last design. While father and son worked on many projects together, “because this was the last house I was able to work on with my dad as the architect before he died,” says Brian, “it makes it a little more special.” “The goal was a quintessential beach house with a traditional aesthetic and a transitional undercurrent,” says interior designer Debra Lynn Henno of Debra Lynn Henno Design, who won out an extensive vetting process by the clients, “and we all eagerly collaborated to attain that.” Cedar shingle siding stained a light-green and white decorative wood trims set the tone. Cherokee flagstone for the lower patio and walkways, and limestone on the upper deck—both in sand tones—cement the look. SPRING 2016 | 93

“We wanted a beach cottage feel with some nautical references as we are longtime boat lovers,” says the client, who with her husband split their time between Santa Barbara and Lake Tahoe. Well thought out architectural elements— ceilings reminiscent of boat decks and hulls, and V-board construction—speak to that goal. “For the interiors, we designed custom pieces that complimented the architecture,” says Henno, “and everything was focused around the view and location.” While more traditional, sizable pieces like bar stools, a dining table, dining chairs, a large sofa and oversize armchairs anchor the open living/dining area floorplan, the overall ambiance remains intimately spacious. “We kept it light and airy,” says Henno. “Beachy and breezy,” thanks in part to Lanai doors they chose to install. “We love the openness created within a fairly small structure,” says the resident. The color palette is that of the ocean—predominantly shades of blues, sea glass greens and sand tones—offset by crisp white cabinetry, trims and ceilings, and white-oak wood for flooring. Linens and cottons abound and lighting was carefully selected not to obstruct the views—an open lantern in the living room, glass pendants in the kitchen.
Schumacher fabric-covered armchairs and a sofa are set on a Serena & Lily rug in the living room. A chest from Joss & Main and a Ballard Designs console offer display and storage spaces. While the house boasts a modest 2,100-square-foot footprint, every square inch is carefully curated. GOOD WINE IN A DRY SEASON The DNA of Grapes BY KEN FRIEDENREICH
nestles the wineries of the world north of the equator, it might behoove us to recall four years of drought, punctuated by an occasional earthquake, fire storm in the forest, or similar Biblical-epic disruptions. The proportion of noise transmitted on these reversals of Nature in the media should have us running to high ground. Drought, the heart of present concern, though serious, may be less scary than your local water company is telling you, especially where vitis vinifera is center stage. The reason comes down to the three simple letters—D-N-A. So Carneros farmer and winemaker (Pinot Noir@Road 31), Kent Fortner, told this writer in the heat of the autumn. “Grapes are tough critters. They can adapt to many apparently adverse surroundings and flourish. It’s all in their DNA; they adapt.” To illustrate the point, the California Wine Institute released the 2015 harvest numbers, another bumper crop four years running, as if in a relay with the soul-parching drought the media bubble-head dolls blather in their best consternated j-school way. The Golden State reports 3.8 million tons of fruit from the vineyards, which in turn will end up in a wine container or similar mediator to find the way to our lips, to our

inhibitions, and to our taste memories. Relatively speaking this haul was about 10% smaller than the three years prior, but it arrived very early, Like 1997’s early harvest, 2015 should presage very good wine across the state. Dry years tend to produce smaller fruit, smaller clusters, and with less skin area to do the metempsychosis of sugars, a very concentrated expression of the varietal. So, the consumer accustomed to “fruit bombs” may find the comparably thin harvest a really nice surprise. In truth. The surprises go on. Tablas Creek in Paso Robles noted that 1.55” of rain during February does not make an El Nino, so earnestly forecast for parched California. Will 2016 become more lean? Uncle Weatherby and Dr. George are mum. Blitzkriegs of fruit forwardness may appeal, but such assaults will often mask other virtues in the varietal as well as pull a curtain down on defects otherwise exposed. A good winemaker can take the best of even a marginal crop and produce fine wine. DNA provides its molecular support to the winemaker’s experience and skill. Fortunately, in California, we have plenty of both. The real challenge remains making wines that express their places of origin with harmonious distinction.
I offer two wines from Sebastopol to illustrate how winemakers can roll with the punches Mother Nature throws at them. The unusually warm seasons since 2012 have produced record harvests, but not on every inch of vineyard in the Golden State. In 2015 as buds morphed into flowers in the Green Valley subset of the Russian River, the winemakers at Dutton Goldfield had a spell of cool wet weather that the eventual turn to arid conditions made the crop at maturity about 40% less than the reported shortfall across the state mentioned above. We will have to wait to see how their 2015 wines show on release. However, we can attend to their 2014 vintage. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the result of wines sourced from 5-6 distinct vineyard locations, some beneficiaries of ocean mildness and others on elevated, tough and somewhat forbidding soil. The outcome followed the pattern of dry and hot years overall in the concentration of fruit and smaller cluster size. The palate enjoys the premium even if the tonnage falls short. Dutton Goldfield’s Chardonnay ($38) falls into the mid-range of what folks expect to pay for a respectable varietal of this ilk. I am pleased to say, despite a rather tartric first Impression that overstated its malolactic fermentation and ten months in new and old French oak, this wine
opened with the room temperature air to reveal a reasonable balance with restrained vanilla and soft stone fruit notes with a creamy feel in the mouth at first impression that. Frankly, not everyone favoring this varietal will cheer, preferring a steely profile. Still, as the wine came around in the glass, and indeed, when sampled the next evening, all of the character of this Chardonnay fell neatly into place. It didn’t need to dazzle to be enjoyed. The Dutton Goldfield Pinot Noir 0f 2015 argues for the repute of this grape in the Russian River environs. From the cork pull, this is a fragrant and gently spiced wine with notes of black tea and Bing cherry that ends— or begins—with a deeper black cherry assertion. This is a wine well-made that continued to reveal its character over several hours. And then it was gone, and at $44 suggested retail, it requires no second mortgage to enjoy. Cheers for Mrs. Dutton (of Dutton Ranch lineage) and Goldfield, who have enjoyed drinking their own wines since 1998, no matter what the weatherman says. CH

that embrace their guests with warmth, history and a touch of magic. Such is Ashford Castle in County Mayo, Ireland. Irish hospitality is legendary but the staff at Ashford Castle takes hospitality to another level that begins when you walk up the steps past the stone Irish wolfhounds to the Oak Hall entrance and never stops until you leave. Unique to Ashford Castle, the panache of its new owner, Beatrice Tollman, permeates the property. Ashford Castle is a work of love for her, so much so that she had 300 workmen working 24 hours a day for two and a half years to restore the hotel at a cost of seventy-five million euros. Whole families were involved in the restoration, much of which was to the infrastructure, including stonework, roofs and 826 windows. Importance was placed on keeping the Irish history of the property accurate. “Mrs. Tollman is both genuine and

generous to both her staff and guests,” says Niall Rochford, the hotel’s general manager. “Mrs. Tollman not only created a five-star hotel experience, she also saved the nearby village of Cong where much of the staff live.” Cong itself is famous for the classic movie, “The Quiet Man,” which was filmed here starring John Wayne and it shown in the theater of Ashford Castle daily. There is also a short film on the restoration of the castle which is well worth seeing. Sited on 350 acres on the shores of Lough Corrib, the castle’s beginnings were in 1228 and parts of that architecture can still be seen. Its most famous owner was Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness who bought the property in 1852. Home to the Guinness family for over 100 years, the castle was a hotel for 75 years before Beatrice and Stanley Tollman bought it, with visi-

tors including King George V, Ronald Reagan, John Wayne, Barbra Streisand and many more. Each of the 70 guest rooms and 15 staterooms and suites has been refurbished in the manner familiar to those who have visited other Red Carnation hotels. There are genuine antique pieces, lavish fabrics, original artwork and marble bathrooms. Tollman and her daughter Toni Tollman are always on the lookout for unusual pieces of furniture and objets d’art. Many of the antiques have been in the castle for years, but carefully selected art and antiques have been added to create one of the finest antiques showrooms in Ireland. Whenever possible, pieces by local artisans help create the Irish atmosphere. For example, the Prince of Wales bar is made from local Connemara marble and organic in-room amenities

are from VOYA of County Sligo. The castle offers several dining experiences. The most elegant is in the George V dining room with its Waterford crystal chandeliers and tasty dishes from Executive Chef Philippe Farineau with additions by Beatrice Tollman. Breakfast is eaten here and we dared to have Irish whiskey in our porridge. Our more traditional dinner was wild halibut and wild salmon with Mrs. Tollman’s mussel soup as a starter. All meat, fish and seafood originate in Ireland, unless otherwise stated on the menu. A more casual restaurant is Cullen’s at the Dungeon with traditional Irish fare. The Connaught Room was my favorite with its floor-to-ceiling windows offering a views of the lake and the gardens. This is the perfect place to have tea while admiring the Donegal crystal chandelier, paneled oak walls, carved fireplace and art. As if that wasn’t enough, there is also wine tasting in the Wine Cellar with Bouchard Finlayson wines. Besides offering luxurious guest rooms, Ashford Castle also offers many outdoor activities. Every morning a History Cruise takes guests into the waters of Lough Corrib with the Connemara Mountains as a backdrop. The castle also offers fishing, with the peak season falling between March and July when Atlantic salmon and wild brown trout can be caught. Pike is available all year. Private boat trips can be arranged. Other activities include archery, clay pigeon shooting, tree climbing, horse riding, falconry, bike riding, tennis and golf, among others. For those who wish to relax, The Spa at Ashford Castle has five treatment rooms, including a couple’s room. Treatments include hot stone massage, aroma and marine therapy, facials, scrubs and wraps. Ashford Castle has such a wealth of things to experience that there is something for everyone, including families.
