It’s a new year and California Homes will be celebrating
our 20th year anniversary in May. We are delighted with the growth of the magazine and look forward to an exciting 2017. California Homes will be adding airport newsstands to our circulation and once again going bi-monthly with our November/December 2017 issue. Until then we will continue with our special interest publication, The Essential Guide to Architects and Builders, out in March, followed by the 20th year Anniversary issue in Spring, and the Summer and Fall issues. I think you’ll enjoy this Winter issue featuring exciting California-based designers, including Lisa Odyniec of San Francisco, Caroline and Steve Thompson of Cabana Home in Santa Barbara, Kelly Schandel of Los Angeles and Tineke Triggs, also of San Francisco. Kavita Daswani was born in Hong Kong and lived in London and Paris before moving to Los Angeles, where she is a contributor to a range of global lifestyle, fashion and design publications. A former fashion editor for the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, and Asian correspondent for Women’s Wear Daily, she currently writes design, travel and lifestyle stories for the Los Angeles Times, JustLuxe.com, international editions of Vogue, Conde Nast Traveller and Architectural Digest, and Prestige in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. She is also a former lifestyle and fashion correspondent for CNN International and CNBC Asia. She has published eight novels, which have been translated into 17 languages. DAVID DUNCAN LIVINGSTON David is the photographer of more than seven books of home design and architecture. His interior and reportage photography captures the essence of the homes he photographs for designers throughout California. David makes his home in Mill Valley with his wife Florence, toddler Luca and Nougat the floppy eared hound. When not photographing you can find David in his garden with Luca. The Norton Simon Museum is delighted to present an installation of Vincent van Gogh’s tender and intimate Bedroom from 1889, a highlight of the Art Institute of Chicago’s superb 19th -century collection, A meditation on friendship, hope and crushing disappointment, Van Gogh’s Bedroom serves not only as a kind of selfportrait, but also as a symbol of the artist’s wandering existence and search for an elusive sense of repose. The second of three versions of the interior scene, the Chicago Bedroom was painted by the artist while at the asylum of Saint-Paul-deMausole at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, in September 1889, Its installation at the Norton Simon Museum marks the first time the painting has been on view on the West Coast, and it will hang in the Museum’s 19th century art wing, surrounded by the Simon’s own important collection of Van Gogh works, from Dec, 9, 2016 through March 6, 2017.

Award Winning Tom Faulkner Creates Stunning Pieces with a Marriage of Metal and Geometry
nature, and fascination with Victorian engineering feed into a singular aesthetic of elemental lines and shapes combined with daring proportions and exquisite natural materials. Tom started designing furniture in 1993. His early pieces featured complex and intricate graphic patterns painted onto wooden tabletops, which proved extremely popular. Keen to explore the possibilities of form and shape he began designing tables from scratch, and commissioned a workshop in Wiltshire to make some metal chairs for a display. Intrigued by metal’s inherent combination of strength and malleability. “Metal was a great discovery” he says. “I was immediately seduced by its stylistic possibilities – the fact that you could bend it and twist it into almost any shape you liked – and also by its strength, versatility, and simplicity.” Continuing to work with the same craftsmen, he jumped at the chance to purchase the forge when it came up for sale in 1995, also taking on its two employees. From here the business expanded rapidly and soon moved to larger premises on the site of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s railway workshops – a neat twist of fate that brought Tom’s interest in Victorian construction and metalwork full circle. Here, an expert team of welders, painters and artisans craft Tom Faulkner furniture to the highest possible standard, with no compromises on quality or finish. In the exhibition, Lloyd Hamrol/Joan Perlman: A sky in the palm of a hand, Lloyd Hamrol’s large-scale felt sculptures and Joan Perlman’s abstract paintings and prints provide a platform to consider the shared ideas and sharp distinctions between two artists’ investigations of materials, process, impermanence, and landscape. Taken from a line in the W.S. Merwin poem “No Shadow,” the exhibition’s title alludes to the conundrum of reconciling intimacy and distance as well as the ephemerality of observable moments and entities. Sunnylands: America’s Midcentury Masterpiece By Janice Lyle, Foreword by Michael S. Smith Walter and Leonore Annenberg visited the Palm Springs area in the 1960s, bought hundreds of acres of desert and created a midcentury estate that paid homage to English country stately homes, the California desert and 1950s architecture and design. In his foreword, interior designer Michael S. Smith refers to the estate as both “elegant and cinematic.” And indeed it is. Designed by A. Quincy Jones, one of California’s most important architects, it houses the only completely preserved interior by Hollywood’s decorator-to-the-stars, William Haines. Sunnylands contains a wealth of information about this legendary estate with hundreds of photographs and architectural drawings. What’s particularly fascinating are the close up shots of the historic rooms and of Haines use of trapunto quilting, biscuit tufting and museum-mount lamps. The Annenbergs were deeply involved in the project so published letters show the back and forth between the Annenbergs and Haines and give insights into the creative process. As Smith says, “This icon of American country house building, with its flower-filled guest rooms and glamorous public spaces, reflects an enduring Palm Springs style—not the cliched assemblage of cold, midcentury modern furniture and objects, but a refined, worldly aesthetic that reflects a kaleidoscope of extraordinary interests and experiences.” Sunnylands is open to the public and presents a time capsule of what life was like here where Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Frank Sinatra, Richard Nixon and other politicians, movie stars and corporate leaders meet and relaxed in an almost cocooned environment. And the estate and grounds are still used by dignitaries and the general public alike. It was wonderful that this masterpiece estate has been preserved and this book adds to its legacy. MICHAEL IMBER WAS BORN AND BRED IN TEXAS , and his classical, yet
modern ranch and country houses dot the plains like so many tumbleweed. There’s something pleasingly familiar and site appropriate about his work; clearly he speaks the Lone Star lingo. But with the opening of a San Francisco office, the award-winning architect is set to expand his vernacular. And, according to him, it won’t be that much of a stretch. “In many ways, Texas and California have a similar history,” he says. “They were both somewhat culturally isolated, they were both once part of Spain and Mexico, and they share similar landscapes that have forged a fortitude in the people. The architecture reflects all of that.” For Imber, who says the heritage of a place influences all of his work, it was a natural second home. But that’s not to say he considers his current home of San Antonio and his adopted San Francisco one in the same. “San Francisco is among the most beautiful and unique cities in the world,” Imber says. “Working on some projects here, and now opening this office, helps us understand the city and the transitions it’s going through. It also helps us better know the

A Santa Barbara designer creates a lively cottage near the ocean BY VANESSA KOGEVINAS

FOR A CHARMING YET slightly tired house on the Mesa in Santa Barbara,
up-and-coming local interior designer Lauren Christine Henno implemented a neutral backdrop punched up with colorful accents to create a fresh and cheerful gem for her client, Sarah Kelly, a Partner at real estate firm Riskin Partners in Montecito. “The house portrays her personality,” says Henno of her client. “It’s very lively. She has a full-of-life demeanor about her.” With Kelly being drawn to ‘happy’ colors, the two set out to incorporate blues, pinks, turquoises and purples that pop from carefully selected textiles—pillows, rugs, blankets— throughout the residence. “I love the fact that interior design encompasses multiple arts forms—textiles and fabrics, spacial planning, art and framing,” says Henno, who carefully

curated new pieces to allow for select pieces of Kelly’s furnishings from her previous onebedroom residence to be seamlessly folded in. “I always say it’s like playing dress up for the day because I don’t design for myself,” says Henno. “I design for my client, their aesthetic and what is going to make them happy.” The two let what they identified as Kelly’s overarching inspiration of ‘Soho Glam’ guide their design. “I love white,” says Kelly. “White couches, marble, chairs, but done with color.” One bedroom is white with various shades of pink punches, while another has blue accents. Her master bedroom takes on a ‘coastal, beachy’ feel with the white being complimented by sea foam green pillows and other coastal hues. The living room exudes a Bohemian feel with a rug from Morocco, wood-and-cast-iron coffee table and shelving, and accessories ranging from glass and metal stars to a Buddha to locally-sourced driftwood. The bright and cheery office was designed “as a space that inspires,” says Henno. “I wanted Sarah to look forward to a bit of work.” Henno and Kelly’s collaboration delivered exactly what they set out to do. “I entertain a lot and guests feel really comfortable.” says Kelly, “It’s chic, it feels like me and I enjoy it every day.” CH A deep blue fabric from Indonesia covers an accent pillow and a black-and-white pillow from Amber Interiors both pop against the whites of the guest room. Wattles Mansion Annouces the 2017 Designer Showcase The spring of 2017 marks the second year of the Wattles Mansion Designer Showcase. PLANTED PARADISE A Mandeville Canyon Property Boasts Nature’s Finest BY VANESSA KOGEVINAS

NESTLED HIGH UP IN THE WINDING ROADS of Mandeville Canyon overlooking Los Angeles sits a recently transformed landscape oasis, showcasing the best of the area’s natural offerings. Upon approach to the house, a long driveway trimmed with succulents weaves through mature trees creating a serene, shaded entrance leading to the sun-drenched motor court area. “It’s a really beautiful property,” says landscape designer Patricia Benner, of Los Angeles-based Patricia A. Benner Landscape Design, who has been creating diverse landscapes in the Southern California area for the past twenty years. Together with the owners of the two-acre parcel, Jackie and Skip Morgen, they reworked and nurtured the land from a tired, neglected spot to one that offers a myriad of exceptional natural experiences.

Gardens “When we purchased the property,” says owner Jackie Morgen, “the trees and other foliage were dense with overgrowth. Once we opened the property through proper trimming and pruning, we discovered many specific areas to beautify.” From the motor court, a pathway leads around a lawn area to the front entry of their newly renovated, midcentury California Ranch-style house graced with plentiful floor-to-ceiling glass windows, which blur the line between the interiors and the exteriors. The lawn serves as the backdrop to an outdoor dining area and fireplace, and doubles as a separation of the ancient untamed trees that are juxtaposed with the lush green of the grass—the center of which is graced with a Gino Miles spherical steel sculpture. Dotted around the property are thoughtfully curated ‘moments.’ “Each individual area has its own special personality,” say Jackie. For the poolscape, Benner and the Morgens decided that an existing, handsomely mature oak tree, which shades parts of the pool and its surroundings, should remain as the focal point. “On the back side of the house, Jackie’s bathroom floor-to-ceiling glass windows look out onto a slope,” says Benner. “We did a tapestry of different succulents and masses of different types. At the base of the window, you look out at a ‘green carpet’ of Aeoniums. It’s one of my favorite moments.” Weaving through the property is a path that beckons wanderings. Along the way are seating areas and stone fountains, as well as, of course, a cornucopia of plantings and trees. “On a practical level we really enjoy our garden by walking through its pathways and relaxing in the sitting areas,” says Jackie, “but the overall beauty of the property is quite breathtaking, and we are awed daily by the beauty of nature that surrounds us.” CH 78 | CALIFORNIA HOMES

OR CLIENTS WITH FINE ANTIQUE FURNISHINGS
acquired while living in Europe and an art collection that includes the likes of a Chagall and a Miró, Cabana Home designers and principals Steve and Caroline Thompson happily accepted sophistication as the sweet spot of their overall design. But their strategy involved more than brilliant volleys of existing pieces. To ace the design for these clients, an easy livability was equally important—as was leaving formality, along with the proverbial worries and blues, outside the door. “They have six grandchildren, ages 4 to 16,” Steve explains. “The design also needed to be about performance.” The space itself, a 3-story townhouse in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara, was a departure for the couple, who’d lived in a large Montecito house after moving back to the states. “They wanted to try something different. The beauty of the newly built housing downtown is that they can walk to dinner, theatre, movies, shopping, and more,” Steve notes. Cabana Home’s challenge was to recreate the kind of environment the couple was accustomed to in their homes in Montecito and Europe, where they could enjoy the pieces they loved, but in a much different urban space with less sprawling room and more verticality. “Space is at a premium in this urban design. We wanted to eliminate

all design elements that would break up the flow. We looked for every architectural and decorative detail to visually expand the space,” explains Steve. A backdrop of crisp white walls with a dark-stained wood staircase and dark casement windows created the ideal starting point. Its simplicity maximizes airiness and allows art and antiques to command attention without competing. For the same reasons, all of the downstairs windows were left beautifully bare. Without dressings, their clean geometry is easier to read, enhancing the contrast to the walls. “That contrast between the stark walls and dark windows also evokes the sensibility of Andalusian architecture,” suggests Steve, who wanted a hint of a European feel without it appearing forced. Honed travertine floors, inherently elegant and understated, welcome the roughest antics active grandchildren can deliver. The rugs that top them also deliver beauty and durability in a single punch. “The woven rug in the living room is bulletproof,” laughs Steve. Others scattered throughout the home sport indoor-outdoor fabric. The bold animal print covering a pair of antique French bergere chairs in the living room also is an indoor-outdoor textile. Even the oval ottoman between the two sofas practically begs for

abuse upholstered in a faux ostrich leather fabric that easily dispatches spills and scuffs. For all the hard-working upholstery fabrics and flooring treatments, fine antiques have no qualms about holding court. A Biedermeier chest is stationed by the staircase. A ripe plum hue of Murano glass fashions a console table’s bulbous Baker lamp. The room’s chandelier is an antique Swedish crystal and bronze chandelier. “My business philosophy in design is to work with the clients’ collection of furniture and art and augment that collection with those new things that makes it all work in the new space,” says Steve. Honoring the clients’ selection of furnishings meant, at times, enlisting creativity to make things work. Steve and Caroline built up the upholstery on the dining chairs with cushions to avoid cutting the high table down to a more functional height. They updated the sofas with new sandy linen fabric and gentled scalloped the backs to allude to a vintage camel-back style. For a pair of the owners’ antique porcelain peacocks, they designed small Lucite shelves to float in a corner between the windows. “This house ultimately was about getting the right mix,” says Caroline. “It’s a juxtaposition of old and new, empty and full, crumbly and modern.” CH

situated along Sugar Bowl Ski Resort in Northern California for Mill Valley couple Phil and Robin Sanderson and their four children just in time for Thanksgiving involved one major thing: a snowcat. “We really plotted carefully,” says longtime friend and interior designer Lisa Odyniec of eponymous San Francisco–based design firm, Lisa Odyniec Design, who worked on the project with colleagues Kristina Hoglund Farber and Alissa Lillie. “The most difficult thing about this project was getting items to the site as there were giant sectionals and a couple of sofas and things that we had to snowcat in, but it was so rewarding.” The Sandersons, who initially owned the site for several years before building, (used by the family during winters for snow camping in a real igloo), wanted to create a quiet, tranquil second home for family gatherings, ski trips, and entertaining. “It’s not a big site, but the rooms feel very spacious,” adds Odyniec of the three-story, four bedroom residence with a gabion wall made of Sierra Granite, concrete floors with radiant heating,

A gabion wall extends from the outside into the living room. “The Gabion Wall system has been around for a very long time,” says Becker. “I was exposed to it through architects Herzog & de Meuron Architects out of Switzerland. They designed the Dominus Estate in Yountville and that age stuck with me for the Sanderson Home. high-tech tinted windows for privacy, and an outdoor Jacuzzi tub and shower. “They are really sort of no-fuss, and they didn’t want it to be showy. We used quiet texture and tones so that the mountain outside really comes through.” Odyniec also layered the space with hints of significant personal touches made by the couple’s artist friends such as a custom, live-edge Redwood dining table by Lawrence Gandsey, and artwork by Stephen Galloway. In the living room, framed by an impressive gabion wall designed by Oakland architect Mark Becker of Mark Becker Incorporated (who collaborated with Odyniec on the interior architecture including cabinetry, beds, and ski room), a custom sectional sofa is paired with lounge chairs by Holly Hunt, and an 11-by-16 wool-and-silk area rug by Niba. The adjacent dining room features a custom, Redwood table, Knoll Saarinen Executive Armless Chairs, and a branchlike, 9-bubble chandelier by Lindsey Adelman.

A modern bunk room is ideal for the children, while the ski room with radiant heated floors neatly houses skis when not in use. The cozy, library-like study is defined by an inventive leather wall. LEFT “The Master Bath space is very horizontal in design, and we had all of the stone run horizontally, to emulate the rock layers/strata of the Sierra,” adds Odyniec. “It is meant to be subtle, but a bit luxurious.”

“It’s unique because it has so much glazing and it really is a treehouse perch, so it is spatially an interesting experience,” says Odyniec. “It is not a big space, so we kept the lines of the bed low, and built it in to be part of the cabinetry. Also, we kept the furniture minimal, not to distract from the view. We placed a lot of emphasis on the horizontal elements of the room, for example, long low horizontal elements like the headboard.”
For the couple, both avid athletes and cooks, the kitchen design was also crucial. “They didn’t want a white kitchen, but they wanted a light kitchen,” says Odyniec of the space with views of Sugar Bowl’s Mt. Disney and Crow’s Nest Peak, appointed with a Gaggenau range, a 10’6” Neolith island top, and custom, pull-free cabinets to further frame the outside view. “They were very articulate about where items would be stored. The idea was to keep surfaces clear, even of joint lines. Robin cares deeply about health and environmental issues and it is apparent in the way she runs the kitchen. I think the clean lines in the kitchen are also a function of the way Robin approaches cooking and life.
She is efficient and doesn’t like to waste resources.” The home, now a year-round escape for the busy family, has proven to fulfill all their needs including a place for the children to make crafts and projects, quiet spaces for reading and relaxing, and a warm and inviting refuge after a long day at play outdoors or skiing. “I love that there’s no jarring space and it flows really nicely and all of the interiors work together,” adds Odyniec. “There’s a connection between all the rooms. It doesn’t feel like a hotel, and we brought in things that meant a lot to the client, like the dining table and the artwork. If I could have a like project every year, I would say ‘yes!’ It was such a great experience.” CH

ELLY SCHANDEL concedes
that, faced with the prospect of conceptualizing the interior of a Malibu home, most designers might instinctively think: ‘beach house’. But the founder of the Santa Monica-based design house thinkpure veered somewhat away from that, instead electing for a modern and crisp setting that perfectly complements the contemporary style of the approximately 5,000 square foot home, and the pristine natural light that surrounds it. “Even though it’s in Malibu, it’s so far away from the ocean, up on the

hillside, that it doesn’t feel like a beach home,” said Schandel. “It’s too refined. So I wanted to do something with clean lines that was comfortable and elegant.” The clients - a couple who split their time between Southern California and Sun Valley, Idaho, enjoy the outdoors as much as they do entertaining a sprawl of grown children and extended family. Schandel said she aimed to straddle the line between masculine and feminine aesthetics. “The husband is a cyclist and very athletic, so the space couldn’t be too feminine,” said Schandel. As a result, the designer alighted on a palette predicated largely on

pallid and subtle blues and greys. These teamed well with the rich woods in the house created by architect David Montalba, founding principal of Montalba Architects in Santa Monica. “There was wonderful teak mill work that had already been installed,” said Schandel. “It provided a beautiful canvas for the furniture that we chose.” The seating in the living room is from venerable Italian brand Minotti, with an L-shaped settee and a pair of club chairs in differing shades of grey around a coffee table and ottoman by B+B Italia. Art in the living room includes pieces from Andrea Ramras and Udo Noger. The streamlined, modern themes extend to the dining room, which
flows out from the living space. The focal point here is a Max Alto rectangular dining table made of brushed black oak, surrounded by Febo dining chairs that feature intriguing details like tone-on-tone raised stitching. “It’s stitching that is really designed to be seen,” said Schandel. “It’s another design element.” Overhead is a light fixture from Hudson Furniture that is a trio of large loops suspended by a pair of hefty chains. “The client had actually seen the lighting a couple of years earlier and loved it. There is a certain timelessness to it,” said Schandel. The dining ensemble sits atop a custom-designed rug which

“Everything really had to be refined and elegant, yet timeless and comfortable,” said Schandel. Schandel co-created with Christopher Farr, part of an exclusive series. The line is called Modern Geometry; the one that graces the floor of the Malibu home is namd ‘aXis’ for its spare, simple pattern. “I had seen something that inspired me towards that pattern and I sketched various ideas and that became the final design,” said Schandel. “I wanted to continue playing with those muted colors.” A lacquered B+B Italia console sits against one wall, above which rests art from Robert Kingston which, like the Udo Noger, is from the Ruth Bachofner Gallery.

In the upstairs master bedroom, Schandel selected square-topped block-styled bedside tables, striking in their simplicity, from Poliform, and a sleek floor lamp by Christian Liaigre. The Minotti bed is dressed in slate-grey sheets accented with teal blue cushions and a plush throw, all by Frette. “Everything really had to be refined and elegant, yet timeless and comfortable,” said Schandel. This 34-acre equestrian property was just what the owner wanted because she and her daughter are involved in horse shows. The estate with its board and batten house backs up to a state park with many horse trails.

Throughout the house, the designer sourced art from Simon Breitbard Fine Arts in San Francisco. She found accessories locally at F. Dorian, Anthem, and Plantation.

Triggs worked with Cook Construction on the extensive kitchen remodel. Cotton White Pental Quartz covers the counter where the designer paired a Grohe Concetto kitchen faucet with a Franke undermount stainless steel sink. OPPOSITE The zigzag motif on the dinning chair fabric and banquette throw pillows mimics the kitchen’s chevron tile backsplash. Triggs installed Hartmann & Forbes woven shades throughout the open kitchen, dining, and family rooms.

to the north and the ethnically diverse Inner Richmond to the south, San Francisco’s Lake District offers an eclectic mix of nature, culture, and commerce. Its upscale residents partake in the best of urban and pastoral life. Tineke Triggs’s design clients selected the child friendly neighborhood for a multigenerational home. They found a charming Edwardian with good bones needing an update. Adjusting to the tastes of a 21st century family, Triggs, and her firm Artistic Designs for Living transformed the four level house from the outside in. Painting the exterior surfaces a matte charcoal punctuated by a high gloss persimmon front door. For the interior Triggs continued the color story with dove-gray walls, white oak floors, and bold touches. On the main floor, Californian artist Myke Reilly’s expressionist abstract commands the living room. The black and white painting surmounts a sleek silver travertine mantel bracketed by built-in vitrines. An ebonized fretwork cocktail table echoes Reilly’s calligraphic forms. Triggs flanked the table with streamlined upholstery covered in platinum tinged textures. Jean de Merry’s sculptural Noir Lumiere Chandelier crowns the room while a tactile Tibetan wool carpet from Stark grounds it. I T H T H E S Y LVA N PA R K P R E S I D I O

In one of the daughter’s rooms, a pale purple ceiling meets offwhite walls and trim. A pair of twin beds with amethyst upholstered headboards flanks a built in bookcase. Lilac damask Roman shades add sophistication to the youthful room.
The design team reconfigured the building ’s early twentieth century floor plan of separate dining and kitchen areas to an open multi use space. An inviting eating nook replaces formality with a built in banquette and white Tulip Saarinen Dining Table. Transparent acrylic side chairs add additional seating. Triggs juxtaposed the pewter shell with Polish artist Andrzej Karwacki’s brilliant hued triptych. A light fixture composed of borosilicate glass rods illuminates the corner. For impromptu dining, family and friends perch on upholstered brushed nickel counter stools at the Kitchen Island or lounge in the adjoining media room. On the second floor, Triggs reiterated the nuanced shades of the entry level in the master suite. A framed focal wall features a Phillip

Jeffries grasscloth as the backdrop for a fully upholstered bed in a Great Plains textile. The designer hung a mid-century style chandelier of polished nickel with radiating glass spheres for the bedroom’s jewelry. In contrast to their parent’s neutral palette, macaron inspired pastels accent the two young daughters’ rooms. When visiting their grandmother, the girls descend the stairs to a ground level apartment. The elegant greige suite includes a sitting room. Triggs placed a faux zebra rug beneath a contemporary sectional and transparent waterfall table. Above the grouping, a forest photo by Mill Valley native, Markham Johnson celebrates the beautiful woodland parks of the San Francisco Bay Area. CH

LACMA EVENT Farhang Foundation Short Film Festival Awards On Saturday September 24th, established and emerging filmmakers, artists, and influencers in the Iranian community and beyond attended a special event at LACMA. The annual Farhang Foundation Short Film Festival Awards Ceremony and Reception celebrated the best in Iranian short films. The winning three films included: First place: Fan, Director: Ali Delkari ($10,000 cash prize winner). Second Place: The Last Tar, Director: Yashin Nahani ($5,000 cash prize winner). The five-star Summer Lodge Country House Hotel in Dorset is the perfect getaway BY KATHY BRYANT
AFTER YEARS OF WATCHING English period dramas set in fabu-
lous country estates, I fantasized about having that lifestyle, if only for a few days. I found the perfect place to do just that: the five-star Summer Lodge Country House Hotel, Restaurant and Spa in Evershot, Dorset. My friend and I stayed there and were cosseted a la Downton Abbey, but without any drama. This Georgian Grade II listed house built in 1798 and located on four acres is right in the middle of Thomas Hardy country. Hardy, an architect by profession as well as a writer, was involved in the house’s planning and a country pub he designed, The Acorn Inn, is right across the street. Summer Lodge has been a member of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection since 2003, so guests know that the architectural integrity of this listed building is intact with the interiors echoing 18th century splendor while having 21st century conveniences. The result is an ideal blend of tradition and modernity. A member of the Relais & Chateaux,
the hotel was voted the Number 1 hotel in the UK by Conde Nast Traveler readers in 2015. There are twenty guest rooms and four suites, each with a different decor. Rooms have fabric walls which add to the coziness and also help in soundproofing. Belgian linens, antique furnishings, fresh fruit, views of the countryside and a welcome soft light in the bathroom are a few of the perks for those staying here. We had a fireplace, reading lights and glossy magazines to read in bed. Although it was tempting to relax in our room after the long flight and the three-hour drive to get to the Summer Lodge (passing Stonehenge on the way), we decided to explore the property. There are historic pictures on the walls to give a feel for the house’s past, including one of the cast of Sense and Sensibility who stayed here while filming in the area. Walking the grounds of an English country house on a beautiful day is one of the joys of a visit. The grounds here have a water feature,

produce garden, green lawns and little nooks for sitting. Tennis, croquet and a swim in the pool are other options if sitting is too boring. After a brisk walk, visit the blue Drawing Room overlooking the garden and have tea or a cocktail. Afternoon tea is special here featuring Dorset clotted cream. Some might prefer the Whisky Lounge with its look of a gentlemen’s club with dog pictures and leather chairs. Dinner in the formal Dining Room is under the direction of Chef Steven Titman who works with Red Carnation President and Founder Bea Tollman to use local ingredients in this three-rosette restaurant. I enjoyed a Rhone wine with my foie gras and Dorset lamb while my friend had Cornish turbot. The vegetables in the salad were from the produce garden and the cheese was local. Breakfast was very British and served in the Conservatory overlooking the gardens. Fresh fruit, egg dishes and porridge are among the choices. In this room and throughout the hotel, colorful fabrics coordinate with the paintings and antiques. We ventured off the property several times using a local taxi company. Montacute House, a Renaissance manor house built of stone in 1588, has seen few has changes in its four-hundred-year history. I recognized the grounds and interiors because they were used in PBS’s “Wolf Hall” as well as “Sense and Sensibility.” The top

floor is an arm of the National Portrait Gallery. Montacute is 14 miles from the Summer Lodge. Sherborne with its castle, Abbey, medieval and Georgian buildings is 12 miles away. In the town center there are independent businesses selling everything from hand-crafted goods to high fashion. Another day we took a double-decker bus from Weymouth to Lyme Regis. During the summer this is a hop on, hop off bus so you can visit many little villages along the way. Unfortunately in the fall/winter it only runs every two hours. The Summer Lodge in particular and Dorset in general were revelations to me. I only explored a small part of it so I definitely want to go back.
