T
his issue is all about the interior designers and architects who make our magazine what it is, The Magazine of Architecture, the Arts, and Distinctive Design. We’re always proud to feature a home designed by architect Richard Landry and his team at Landry Design Group of Los Angeles, this time with designer Thomas Pheasant. We could not resist the beautiful Montecito home by Warner Group in Santa Barbara, and interior designer Tineke Triggs always comes through with her impeccable style. Interior designer, Gail Claridge designed a project on Lake Sherwood for the holidays, and it is over the top. It is the perfect spot for entertaining. Our Guest Speaker, this issue is none other than architect
Thomas A. Kligerman of IKB Architects with some insightful thoughts on the importance of travel and education. We were the media partner for ASID OC this year. We included a special section for their 2019 Design Award winners and the Gala Celebration culminating in saying farewell to President Michele Prata, Allied ASID OC, and welcoming new President Bill Elson, Allied ASID OC. This issue is a wrap for 2019, on to the new year and many exciting changes and additions to California Homes. We look forward to a great 2020. Happy Holidays and a Blessed New Year. NORTON SIMON MUSEUM– PASADENA
The Norton Simon Museum presents By Day & by Night: Paris in the Belle Époque, an exhibition that surveys the rich range of artistic responses to life in the French capital during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this time, later dubbed the belle époque, or “beautiful era,” Paris was at the forefront of urban development and cultural innovation. Its citizens witnessed the construction of the Eiffel Tower, the ascendancy of the Montmartre district as an epicenter for art and entertainment and the brightening of their metropolis under the glow of electric light. By Day & by Night: Paris in the Belle Époque celebrates the innovative spirit of art and culture in Paris during the belle époque through a selection of paintings, drawings, prints and photographs from the Museum’s collections. By Day & by Night is on view until March 2. For more information please call 626.449.6840 or visit www.nortonsimon.org. LEFT

THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART–LOS ANGELES
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) presents With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972–1985, the first full-scale scholarly North American survey of the groundbreaking yet understudied Pattern and Decoration art movement. Including painting, sculpture, collage, ceramics, textiles, installation art, and performance documentation, the exhibition spans the years 1972 to 1985 and features forty-five artists from across the United States. With Pleasure examines the Pattern and Decoration movement’s defiant embrace of forms traditionally coded as feminine, domestic, ornamental, or craft-based and thought to be categorically inferior to fine art. This expansive exhibition traces the movement’s broad reach in postwar American art. The exhibition will be on view at MOCA Grand Avenue through May 11, 2020. It is accompanied by a fully illustrated, scholarly catalogue published in association with Yale University Press. For more information please call 213.621.2766 or visit www.moca.org.

The immersive and multi-sensory experience will extend beyond the gallery walls into the Museum’s public spaces—including an OMCA-commissioned 40-foot-tall outdoor temple by internationally-acclaimed sculptor David Best. The exhibition will feature many works by Bay Area artists including jewelry, costumes, “mutant” vehicles, sculptures, photography, and paintings. The companion exhibition within the gallery, City of Dust: The Evolution of Burning Man, organized by the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, will trace Burning Man’s origins from its countercultural roots in the San Francisco Bay Area to the world-famous desert gathering it is today. There are few subjects in American history that can ignite the imagination as much as the mystery, romance and mythology associated with the American Frontier. The theme of the Wild West has long been popular in American art, film, and literature. Often, the visual imagery is heavily tied in with the folklore that has been created around the Wild West and Native American tradition. Artists Billy Schenck, Greg Miller and America Martin all have their own ties to the vast landscape and history of the region that was once considered the Frontier. In their recent bodies of work, each artist independently explores this history through imagery sourced from both personal narrative as well as popular culture. JoAnne Artman Gallery is proud to present The Wild Bunch, an exhibition of recent works by Schenck, Miller and Martin, on view until January 2020. The gallery is located at 326 N. Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. For more information please call 949.510.5481 or visit www.joanneartmangallery.com

Bernard Hoyes, a Palm Springs based artist, is pleased to present Spirit of the Land Through Climate Change, an exhibition of large-scale watercolor paintings that speaks to the ecological life of the Desert. The works evokes beauty and spirituality, ultimately observing the transmogrification by climate change over the past ten years. The exhibition will be on view at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands through March 8, 2020. Hoyes’ watercolor subjects respond to the precarious state of the natural environment of the Coachella Valley through a personal lens, experimenting with form and narrative in the water pigments. Large paintings from an intuitive perspective, also reveals a controlled recession of details, plane after plane, allowing the observer to wander into the picture space for a vicarious experience of nature. He addresses how the ideology of loving the environment, means as much to technology and industry, their progression. Inviting the viewer to observe conservation elements, to be the steward of changes that technology and Industry has on the impact on all living things.
SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
Fifty years since the first footsteps on the Moon, the exploration of the cosmos remains irresistible, and the ambition to establish commercial space travel and planetary settlements continues to capture the imagination. Far Out: Suits, Habs, and Labs for Outer Space celebrates the visionary ideas and ingenious solutions from architects, artists, and designers who dared to imagine life far out among the stars. In parallel to the advances of a booming space industry, artists and architects are reckoning with the social and cultural effects of our cosmic quest. Extraterrestrial conditions amplify the challenge to design for space travel, and new research and technologies are making what was once science fiction a reality. This exhibition presents realized and conceptual designs for space suits, habitats, and laboratories.

SAN DIEGO MUSEUM OF ART
Abstract Expressionism often brings to mind the work of artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, whose reputations have reached heroic heights. They have been posited as innovators—the creators of one of the most uniquely American art movements in history. The significance of the contributions made to Abstract Expressionism by Pollock and his male contemporaries should not be underestimated, but nor should the contributions of the many female artists who not only helped to find the movement but who continued to define abstraction for many decades. Great efforts have been made in recent years to reevaluate the development of Abstract Expressionism in relation to women’s contributions and it is from these efforts that this show builds. Drawn entirely from the Museum’s collection of works on paper, the work of pivotal artists including Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, and Deborah Remington as well as the work of contemporary artist Mary Heilmann, a leading figure in abstract American art, are brought together to demonstrate that the masculine lens through which abstraction has been previously understood must be removed. Abstract Revolution is on view through February 23, 2020. For more information please call 619.232.7931 or visit www.sdmart.org.

WONDERLAND Fleetwood Windows & Doors Continues To Delight Architects And Homeowners BY KATHY BRYANT
SINCE 1961, CALIFORNIA-BASED FLEETWOOD
Windows & Doors has evolved every year using as their motto ”building it better, not cheaper.” “From the company’s inception, product longevity was the main driver for designs. Our motto drove improvements to existing designs wherein better quality components were utilized,” says Mark McCoy, Owner and CEO of Fleetwood Windows & Doors. “Our products are built to last 100 years and we use sustainable materials like aluminum bauxite, which is naturally bountiful, as our product base,” says McCoy. Adding to product sustainability, the aluminum remnants are 100% recycled and the primary hardware material is long lasting, marine-made stainless steel which also adds beauty.

Starting in 2020, the company will introduce The EDGE Collection, a new family of products whose design allows the aluminum framing to disappear into the floor, ceiling and walls. The first two products are the EDGE sliding door and the EDGE fixed system. These are exciting designs for which architects and designers have been waiting. “Every product we manufacture and all new designs go through fluid testing to make sure its form delights elite luxury architects and its performance amazes the homeowner who uses it, says McCoy. Foreword by Timothy Potts Written by Scott Allan, Davide Gasparotto, Peter Bjorn Kerber, Anne T. Woollett The second best thing to actually visiting the Getty Museum and absorbing these masterpieces in person is to peruse this book, Masterpieces of Painting. As J. Paul Getty himself wrote in 1965, “I am convinced that the true collector does not acquire objects of art for himself alone…Appreciating the beauty of the object, he is willing and even eager to have others share his pleasure.” That pleasure is in abundance in this coffee table book. Originally J. Paul Getty (1892-1976) collected Italian Renaissance as well as Dutch and Flemish Baroque works. Expanding over four decades, the collection now includes pieces by masters such as Titian, El Greco, Rubens, van Dyck, Rembrandt, Manet, Turner, Renoir, Monet, van Gogh and Cezanne, among many others. The book surveys more than one hundred of the most significant paintings. Illustrated in full color, the works come alive in the book abetted by descriptions that reveal their history and meanings. And one of joys of the book is the enticement to either view the works for the first time at The Getty Museum or return to the museum. Masterpieces of Painting: J. Paul Getty Museum By Scott Allan, Davide Gasparotto, Peter Bjorn Kerber, Anne T. Notes on Decor Etc.
By Paul Fortune Rarely does a design book appear to be a highly personal autobiography, but that is exactly what this delightful, first book by interior design legend Paul Fortune is. Notes on Decor Etc. is a ribald telling of Fortune’s life that reads like a novel. Anyone who has heard him speak in person knows that this is his book, his writing, his wit and his self deprecation. Born and educated in England, Fortune has lived in the U.S. since 1978, living first in New York City, then the wilds of Oregon and then Los Angeles. The book recounts all the different jobs and experiences he had along the way, some of them hilarious. But all seemed to lead inexorably to him becoming a top interior designer. LEFT
Lower Manhattan 2016 BELOW
The Berkshires 2000
This monograph is a testament to his talent. Los Angeles-based Fortune Design Studio was founded in 1982 and has designed homes for clients throughout the world, including Marc Jacobs, Sofia Coppola and David Fincher. HIs eclectic taste and design inspirations are found not only in all the hundreds of photographs in the book and also in his clever comments. As he says about current design, “The truly authentic has all but disappeared. Lifestyle catalogs abound. I call it the Nightmare-on-Elm-Street disease. And what is living and decorating if not a statement of our awareness and love of our immediate environment?” He feels the key to good design now is rediscovering how we actually live and connect with the world. In Notes on Decor Etc. Fortune documents his favorite projects and makes suggestions that can help you make rooms more livable, perhaps dramatic, and more personal. After reading his book, it’s possible you may want to change your lighting, rearrange your furniture and consider investing in a statement piece. But, above all, sit down and enjoy yourself.

generation, rescales and recolors them for today’s interiors, melding the classic with the contemporary. Before joining the family business in 2011, and after graduating from the University of St. Andrews, Harris honed her skills at other companies. The experience included five years as a senior interior designer with the New York City firm Markham Roberts. But it was her forays into the family attic as a child to hunt through Parish-Hadley’s stored fabrics and wall coverings that formed her aesthetic. Harris took inspiration from both Sister Parish’s love of chintz and needlepoint and Albert Hadley’s disciplined modernist eye. Sister Parish Design includes many of Hadley’s geometric patterns in fabrics and wallcoverings. “Kismet” is a playful take on zig-zag while “Albert” is a subtle crisscross design with understated chic. “Cecil Stripe” honors one of Hadley’s icons,

Cecil Beaton. An African batik influenced “Campbell,” named after Alan Campbell, compliments these handsome prints. The fabric designer created many custom fabric and wallcoverings for Parish-Hadley’s clients, and Harris took one of them updating it for today’s market. It is a tribute to an artistic association between Campbell, Parish, and Hadley that goes back to the sixties. Recently Harris added Hadley’s design “Sintra” to printed grasscloth. Already available on fabric and a paper wall covering, the texture of grasscloth introduces another dimension to the iconic “Tree of Life” motif named for the exotic Portuguese city. Its foliate ornamentation is the perfect contrast to Hadley’s more geometric patterns. To view Sister Parish Design in California, visit Thomas Lavin in Los Angeles and HEWN in San Francisco. Thomas A. Kligerman of IKB Architects An Essay on the Importance of Travel and Education
MY LOVE FOR LEARNING is as strong today as it was when I
was a student. It centers now, as it did then, on lessons from the past and simple observation. More often than not, when finding my way into a new design, solving a problem or looking for inspiration, I look to history. Frequently my first stop is English architecture and one of its stars—architect, Sir John Soane. History almost overlooked Soane. One of western architecture’s most influential figures, Sir John started life as the son of a brick mason, not destined to attend the universities open to others of higher rank. He might have gone on, unrecognized, as a lowly hod carrier had he not been discovered by prominent architect, George Dance the Younger. Dance hired him as a draftsman—the chance Soane needed. Sir John’s example holds my attention for two main reasons (among many others): First, he traveled extensively—most

notably, to Italy and Malta on the famed Grand Tour. There he learned firsthand about classicism. The bounty of Sir John’s travels inspired his collections at his London house and museum. Architecture casts and models, sculpture and paintings fill the sky-lit building. Second, Sir John valued education. Deep into his career, while working on significant commissions like the Houses of Parliament and the Bank of England, Soane taught. The drafting room for his students still exists under the clerestories of his townhouse. Soane’s example inspired the Ike Kligerman Barkley Traveling Fellowship, encouraging architecture graduate students to travel and learn. Additionally, with Soane as my example, I started my own annual traveling sabbatical—an opportunity to keep learning. This past spring’s sabbatical took me to Mississippi. I traveled through the Delta’s verdant horizontal landscape. I visited cities brimming with history and architecture: Faulkner’s Oxford,
Vicksburg’s battlefields and the limestone classicism of Jackson. But the highlight of the trip was my time at Mississippi State University’s School of Architecture in Starkville. Like Soane, I wanted a chance to work with students. The previous fall I had lectured at the school. At that time, I was able to sit down to share ideas with incoming architecture students and their upper-class counterparts. This time I served on a fourth-year architecture review. I was taken with the students’ work, their inventive problem solving, the range of ideas, materials and detail; their creativity in dealing with proportion, massing and volume, all of it tackled in innovative ways. The work of many of those students was excellent and our interactions as much peer to peer as critic to student. Yet I hoped to inspire them to a higher curiosity. I wanted them to add richness and texture, not only of their designs, but to their ability to carry on an even more meaningful dialog with others. These kinds of things can be gained from observation and travel—far afield, within the boundaries of their own state or just by cracking open a great book. Additionally, I hoped to help them see that when learning becomes a part of the rhythm of our day, we can experience it just for sheer joy—and that’s not a bad thing at all. And this opportunity in Starkville granted me something else—the chance to connect with and encourage the quiet students, the shy ones, those the whose travels haven’t taken them far outside their home state, or who were uncertain about their chosen major. Perhaps, it’s from among those students that George Dance might have spotted this generation’s John Soane. CH ikekligermanbarkley.com

In designing her 1975 Calabasas home, which boasts sunny views for days and is a far cry from flat, foggy London, she fused her heritage at every turn with notes of past, present, and future. “As a child growing up in London, my parents created an environment for love of architecture, travel and art,” she says. In embracing Chinese culture, English style, and the California landscape, she kept the interior palette neutral, pulling in tones from nature of warm grays, stone beige, and sunkissed oak floors with contrasting black lacquer. Splashes of color come from art and a “Chinese red” door for good luck. Traditional English accents are woven in throughout with rich, warm velvets, cool linens, and Alpaca on armchairs, tufted sectionals, and ottomans—which are usually filled with friends. “My 5 Fs are food, family, friends, fashion, and furniture,” she says. In came the Warner Group Architects (WGA), along with Allen Construction, to remodel this 4,900-square foot residence, leaving no room untouched as they rethought everything from the entry—where they created an instant connection to the gardens—to the master bedroom, maximizing the ocean views. Making the most of so much natural beauty, the team managed to add more color and style inside and out, while ensuring all the details looked era appropriate. “The style and inspiration were to create a home that looks as if it has been here since the 1920s,” says WGA senior project designer Chris Richards. “The remodel allowed the home to function better for entertaining,

Next came large skylights positioned above living room and the dining table in the great room to flood the once dark home with light. Then, with all the newfound sunshine, came color—and lots of it. Since the living room, library, and kitchen are all within eyesight of each other, the design team decided on a palette of blue and white for consistency.

occupied by a young family, Tineke Triggs allowed the architectural elements to shape her interior design. Literally. Taking cues from the arched doorways throughout, she introduced elements that echo the curves. “With the furniture and architecture, that was very intentional—creating these custom pieces that connect them,” says the founder of the firm Artistic Designs for Living.
72 | CALIFORNIA HOMES
In the informal dining area—neighboring the Carrara marble-clad kitchen—the back of the banquette shares a silhouette with the doorways. Ditto for the marble backsplash in the powder room that Triggs ingeniously actualized from space underneath the stairs; in a small niche, she squeezed in a vanity that, according to Triggs, is “an homage” to the sinks that were commonly found in Victorian bedrooms. Also noteworthy in here: What appears to be wallpaper is in fact the handiwork of decorative painter Elan Evans.

Over the course of the project, architect Stephen Sutro expanded the Pacific Heights residence’s footprint to accommodate a master suite and a great room. He also installed new skylights that coax natural light into the structure. Triggs was responsible for the furniture as well as architectural details—the cabinetry, finishes and lighting among them. The clients, a young couple with twin daughters, brought only some accessories into the home, including an old chest from the husband’s side of the family. With the decorative items that Triggs procured, she took into consideration the era of the building, selecting items that “feel like they’re antiques, like they could have come from their great-grandmother’s attic,” she says. Case in point: the pair of vintage maps of Austin, the wife’s hometown, that hang in the living room. The home is awash in shades of indigo, gray and taupe. The
family room is anchored by a gray Lee Industries sectional and the living room features a Thibaut sofa covered in a royal blue chenille. In the master bedroom, the jumping-off point for Triggs was the neutral-hued Colefax and Fowler textile with a circular motif that she employed for the window treatments. The overall palette and “quieter patterns,” as she describes them, keep the interiors fresh and avert any visual heaviness. Reflecting on the transformation, Triggs notes another triumphant aspect: the budget. “Remodeling a house and furnishing it from scratch don’t always bode well in San Francisco, with the costs,” she says. “We definitely mixed a lot of the high and the low together”—for example, the table in the dining room is by Troscan while the great room holds a Four Hands table and bench—“which I think made the whole thing feel really successful. Everything looks like it has been in the house for years.” CH

had to do a bit of quiet introspection before embarking on the remodel of the 10,000 square foot Los Angeles home that had been designed by r e n ow n e d a r c h i t e c t Pa u l Williams in 1942. “It was important for us to respect the architecture that had already been created,” said Landry, founder of the prestigious Landry Design Group in Los Angeles. “It was almost like we had to get into Williams’ mind, and ask ourselves, ‘if he was here to remodel this house, what would he do?’” Landry and his team - also led by his associate Todd Riley - had to strip down the Hollywood Regency-style home

virtually to its studs, rebuild it in keeping with that architectural style, while adding the elements that the homeowners sought. They wanted a new master suite and larger bedrooms for their three children. They envisioned a family room that felt connected to the formal living and dining rooms, an expanded garage that could be accessed through the house. A new pool house, a home theater and wine room, an elegant covered loggia, and that seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces that is the hallmark of every thoughtfully designed contemporary Southern Californian home - these all hovered at the top of their wish list. “We had to truly understand what was and was not working for the family, so we could reor-ganize the floor plan so it would work for them,’ said Landry. “That was the real challenge - how to use the house and maximize the square footage.”
By the end of the approximately three-year project, Landry had added 8,000 square feet and created a gracious, dignified home with a pristine white exterior that conveys an aristocratic old-world feel while fitting in with the busy family ’s modern-day requirements. Ceilings were heightened, windows lengthened. The public spaces in the house - the entrance, living room and parlor - now lead out onto the covered loggia using bifold doors that stretch out across entire walls. Where they could, Landry, Riley and the team retained details like the entrance facade that curves inwards, or bay windows. Landry was mindful of how differently people live today compared to when the house was first built, and creating a welcoming outdoor area was critical. A guest house in the back was part of the additions.
“There is a grand staircase leading from the house to the lawn, making the outdoors very wel-coming and open and enhancing the connection between the house and the outdoors,” said Landry. “Putting us in the mind of Paul Williams became our narrative,” said Landry. “ We wanted to respect the architecture of the house and give it a nice fresh look in a language that would be reminiscent of his language.” The interiors were done by Washington DC-based Thomas Pheasant, who adopted very much of a similar ‘what would Williams have done’ approach. “Early in the project, I tried to imagine how Williams would have created this house today with today’s standards of living,” said Pheasant. ‘The small kitchens and bathrooms of the 1940s, along with the low ceilings and

tiny closets no longer make it today…how would he have evolved his voice?” The black and white marble floor in the entry hall were inspired by the old Hollywood Regency style, he said. “I designed this space to set the mood and vocabulary from the minute you enter.” Pheasant designed most of the furnishings but said he introduced “a few pieces to echo the past”, including side chairs in the living room by William Haines, who also designed by Holly-wood stars of the 1940s and 1950s. Pheasant also added a 1940s Murano mirror in the pow-der room, above a black lacquered vanity. “These types of elements helped me keep the interiors modern but in touch with the spirt of Williams. This sensitivity to the original house was shared by both Landry and myself….it is why the house feels so seamless from inside to out.” Ultimately, said Landry, the key to a successful renovation is when the house of past blends in with the house of the present. “When you look at it, it’s hard to tell what was there before, and that is the sign of a successful project,” he said. “There’s a real elegance to it yet it’s livable and not-over-the-top. I could to-tally see the family living there. And in the end, it was everything they’d ever dreamed of.” CH

SHERWOOD HOUSE THIS LAKE FRONT MOUNTAIN-LIKE LODGE WAS MADE FOR CHRISTMAS TEXT BY JANE DUELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK LOHMAN

of Gail Claridge Designs was asked by Dr. Randy Capri and his wife Denise to redesign their large home she knew it was going to be a lengthy process. The house, built 19 years ago, is made of wood and Elk Mountain stone from Montana and looks like an impressive mountain lodge. The interior design however was French and completely wrong for the home. At almost 10,000 square feet with six bedrooms, six bathrooms, a huge great room with kitchen and bar the house had stunning structural qualities but massive renovations were needed including hand scraping and refinishing wood floors, ceilings, beams and mantles. Gail’s inspiration for the American Indian décor came from the fact that in the late 1800’s the Chumash Indians lived in the valley for years. The original caves can be seen from the home. Gail knew she could make it beautiful and unique and the clients relied totally on her expertise. Perched above the lake the house has many large windows that present a stunning view. When she came upon an antique canoe, with the hand painted bottom, that became her starting point. It was red with black and ivory design that resembled an Indian blanket.

The antique pieces and bronzes were found on shipping trips to Santa Fe, New Mexico and Lake Arrowhead, California. Gail was constantly hunting for American Indian artifacts and accessories. The home remodel took a year and half and was completed last November. This house was made for Christmas and Gail used a natural approach with twigs, branches, features, birch, berries, pinecones and live cedar garlands. She lined the large stone covered entryway that leads to the front door with a dozen Christmas trees and lights to look like a winter forest. President’s Letter
Thankful for the Memories. As Orange County’s recent Past President 2018-19, I can say it was an energizing experience similar to being launched on a rocket accompanied by non-stop thrilling moments that catapulted our chapter into programming nirvana! It took a village of course to launch this rocket with my fellow Board of Directors, Chairpersons, Industry Partners and Sponsorships! I have many to be thankful for hosting all of my term’s events but the most memorable of all is this year’s Celebration Gala, Installation & Design Awards presented by Pacific Sales Titanium Sponsor along with Pirch Emerald Sponsor, Mode Distributing Ruby Cocktail Sponsor, California Homes Magazine Media Sponsor, and our Cosentino Design Awards Sponsor on September 22nd held at the Dana Point Yacht Club. I was blessed for the support of so many including our Industry Partner Sponsors so we could plan a magnificent end of term Celebration Gala memorable for all. I want to thank our Sapphire Sponsors Bellissima Art and Frame & Sunset West, our Topaz Sponsors Ferguson, CS Wo & Sons, Essentials for Living, DJ Sponsor California Closets, and Pinch Me live band Sponsor Creative Window Designs, our Pearl Sponsors Monogram, Style Bath Enclosures, Brizo, Benjamin Moore, Ethan Allen, Pacific Shore Stones, Audio Concepts, Dacor, Houzz and Emser Tile. Thanks to Revolution Performance Fabrics for our donated Swag Bag filled with gift swag including Toffee from Materials Marketing, Susie Cupcakes from Modul Marble and Ma and Pa Kettle Popcorn from Rugs Plus! I want to especially thank Linda Mccall of California Homes Magazine for her special support of me, sponsorship, and our chapter event publication. Newly installed Communications Director Angela Eason, Allied ASID eloquently introduced me at Gala as outgoing President to deliver my Farewell speech so I could thank my outgoing Board and all who made my term successful. So happy for our newly installed President Bill Elson, Allied ASID and his Board of Directors and I will be truly supportive of their events. I am very grateful to Pacific Sales’s Shaun Ayala for his generosity as he truly earned a Chapter Merit Award for their Titanium Sponsorship. I also chose to award a Chapter Legacy for Excellence in Interior Design to our over 30 year member Jeffrey D Hatch, ASID of the Hatch Design Group renown for their superb hospitality restaurant design in Newport Beach which was part of my term’s Dining By Design. You may ask yourself why do I belong to ASID and why do I volunteer my time? It’s because I am genuinely interested in the advancement of our multi design sector profession and how I can better the impact of the human experience with interior designed spaces for living, wellness, healing, working, entertaining and learning. Our national ASID Foundation funds ongoing research in this capacity which I am very dedicated. For now my volunteering for our chapter will definitely slow down as go back to work full swing with my interior design practice, Prata Studio Interiors, and I plan nuptials to my fiancé Richard Downes of Style Bath Enclosures who I was lucky to meet over 10 years ago at an ASID OC meeting! Together we have built our businesses and found long lasting industry friendships! As Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said and will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” So I leave you all forever humbled in my chapter leadership at ASID OC and thank you for your believing in me! My client, a single woman, purchased a 1960’s era apartment turned condominium, which required updates and a more modern aesthetic. The Galley-style kitchen was cramped and outdated. Construction changes included replacing windows, removing a wall and soffit and updating all utilities. An heirloom collection of Bauer Ware dishes inspired the bold use of color in the new design which features open shelves, a contemporary industrial-type design, easy to maintain surfaces and a chalkboard-paint wall to feature art and inspire flights of fancy. Winner of the 2019 ASID Design Awards is a master bedroom for clients in Corona Del Mar. Originally a Mediterranean style home with contemporary flair by Brion Jeanette Architects, the space was transformed into a soothing retreat for art loving clients. Using textural horse hair wallcovering from Phillip Jefferies and a thick Mohair Rug from Stark, the room came alive. Working in a neutral palette so as not to take away from the bay views, we worked with warm taupes and rich greys. Entertaining CONGRATULATIONS FORTUNE DESIGNS PLATINUM AWARD BEST GREAT ROOM
This history-buff couple wanted a Great Room that would be inviting, yet polished. Designer Sonya Zamora realized a bit of a neo-classical design, that would have an overstory of contemporary elements, would suit them perfectly. We were thrilled they had well-appointed art, and a few favorite furnishings they would like to keep; however, the room lacked proper scale and interest. After adding architectural elements, saturated velvet, heavy wainscoting, darkcocooning walls, and mirrored symmetry, we were able to create a room that checked all the design boxes, and a space that the homeowners love–always our biggest reward! 949.378.9134, fortunedesignllc.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019 | 103

The biggest challenge in transforming this majestic estate was to rearrange the existing floorplan, and create a contemporary design throughout, while honoring the original architecture. The original main floor had no adjoined living and entertainment areas. The addition of an expansive wrap around deck further expands the main floor living space and draws you into the view itself, where double staircases welcome you to the lower pool and lounge areas. 949.768.3943, frankpitmandesigns.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019 | 109

FOR THOSE OF US FORTUNATE
enough to have grown up in Santa Barbara, the Miramar was a place of enduring memories and special occasions and then later the most romantic place to be taken for dinner and drinks. Today, after many years of planning, owner Rick J. Caruso has developed a magical environment, and Rosewood Miramar Beach, inspired by the beautiful homes and grand estates of Montecito, is even more enchanting. The property was designed as a private residence and represents Mr. Caruso’s vision of sprawling Montecito estate that grew over time, in tandem with the growth of a family. Caruso looked to Montecito’s storied past and renowned architect Paul Williams, the late highly-prolific designer from Southern California, remembered by many as the ‘architect to the stars.’ Upon arriving at Rosewood Miramar Beach Resort, one enters through the property’s magnificent Manor House, the heart of Rosewood Miramar Beach, and home to its most luxurious guest accommodations. The three signature suites in the Manor House include the Founder’s Residence, the Miramar Suite, and the Ambassador
Suite. The Founder’s Residence, designed entirely by Diane Johnson, Rick Caruso’s interior designer, offers 3900 square feet of glamorous living space. The sophisticated Ambassador Suite reflects an elevated modern interpretation of the classic characteristic of traditional Montecito estates. The Miramar Suite, designed by Nancy Corzine, sets a romantic and glamorous setting with its luxurious finishes from Phillip Jeffries wall covers to Borghese mirrored furniture, custom-designed and built by Nancy Corzine in Los Angeles. Moving through the foyer, the black and white checkered Nero Marquina and Bianco Antico flooring shines through and into the living room and manor bar while all are connected by a large veranda and terraces that wrap the exterior of the Manor House. We enjoyed a glass of Billecart-Salmon Champagne in the bar

upon our arrival while waiting for our room and the next morning a breakfast from the sourced farm to table menu at Malibu Farm at Miramar. This casual restaurant offers a casual ambiance designed to form a bridge between the rustic and relaxed beach vibe and the elegance of the rest of the resort. There are many accommodations to choose from, and it was impossible to decide which was our favorite, but definitely, the 26 oceanfront suites at the Beach House are an unparalleled offering in Southern California. Dinner that night was, of course, at Caruso’s, the resort’s signature oceanfront restaurant. The high hues and high gloss lacquered wood panels used throughout the space are reminiscent of polished yachts, while the terrazzo tile floor, which is decorated with silver arched metal inlays, is reflective of the rolling waves of the sea. While beautifully designed, the food and service are the high light of this exceptional restaurant. It has become a favorite with the Santa Barbara locals, and we will definitely dine there on our next trip. A mention of the Beach Bar is imperative. Situated right on the ocean, we

enjoyed drinks there, and I was overcome with nostalgia, remembering my teenage years and summers on Miramar Beach. The grounds at the Rosewood Miramar Beach are impeccable, and I have to mention the landscape as it is a lush variety of plant and tree species. Many of which have been there for over seventy-five years. The property’s largest outdoor venue, the great lawn, is the centerpiece of the estate’s grounds and features both mountain and ocean views. It was this past summer that we stayed at the Miramar and the flowers including gardenias, hydrangea, poppies, and blooming lavender, were in all their glory, providing beautiful visual and smells. That, combined with the ocean breezes, proved we were in heaven at Rosewood Miramar Beach Resort in beautiful Santa Barbara. CH rosewoodhotels.com
