e hope you had a wonderful summer and like us, ready for the social rush that comes with September. It seems as though magazines are now also in the event business as we are not only involved with the usual fall markets and of course the San Francisco Fall Show in October, but sponsoring the ASID OC Design Awards Gala , September 22, and the American Institute of Architects Santa Barbara and their 11th annual ArchitecTours event in early October, concluding with the Fall Preview Modernism Week, Coachella Valley October 17-20. You can read more about the events on page 52 of this issue. The September/October issue features four homes in California providing a variety of designs by young and

upcoming designers. A very modern and sleek beach house in La Jolla created by the brother and sister team of David and Suzie Lucas based in Seattle, a beautiful livable contemporary family vacation home in La Quinta by designer Anna Hackathorn, another family vacation home at Martis Camp near Lake Tahoe by designer Sarah Jones, and a beautiful San Francisco home by designer Christine Lin. This edition is always our Food & Wine issue, and we know you’ll enjoy the story of jet-setter designer Birgit Klein and her idea of entertaining in the chic pavilion on the grounds of her Montecito residence. Plus check out our wine column on the Rutherford appellation in the Napa Valley. All this and so much more. Enjoy. Susan McFadden Editor in Chief

When my grandmother gave me my first portfolio case to display my prints.” Of course that was back in the film days where he crafted black and white fiber prints in a closet turned darkroom at his family’s home. To this day he carries the same passion and enthusiasm for photography with him everywhere he happens to be. R. Brad Knipstein Studio is a full service studio. From finding locations to retouching to pre-press and everything in between, photo production is his business. See his photography on a San Francisco Home beginning on page 80.

VOLUME 23 · NUMBER 6

Calendar MUSEUMS & GALLERIES THE HAMMER MUSEUM–LOS ANGELES

The Hammer Museum presents Lari Pittman: Declaration of Independence, the most comprehensive retrospective to date of the work of American artist Lari Pittman. A prolific painter and sharp social critic, Pittman has been a strong presence in both the international sphere and the L.A. art community. From his earliest experiments with collage and decoration, to the iconic paintings he produced in response to the AIDS crisis and culture wars of the 1990s, to his more recent mural-scale paintings and symbolic, stylized paintings of textiles paired with portraits, Pittman’s works have remained prescient, incisive, and exquisitely rendered. This exhibition will include approximately 80 paintings and 50 works on paper drawn from the Hammer’s own holdings as well as from many public and private collections throughout the world. On view September 29, 2019 – January 5, 2020, Lari Pittman: Declaration of Independence marks the first time the Hammer Museum has ever devoted all of its major exhibition spaces to a single living artist. SAN JOSE MUSEUM OF ART

In celebration of SJMA’s 50th anniversary, Beta Space: Pae White presents a compendium of new works and recent installations for the sixth iteration of the Museum’s exhibition series Beta Space. White’s peripatetic practice across various media and disciplines captures the spirit of this series: her work brims with artistic risk taking and experimentation, reflecting the wildly creative and innovative ethos of Silicon Valley. Beta Space: Pae White features newly made artworks that further White’s interest in shifting our associations and perceptions of everyday objects, materials, and phenomena. In addition, the exhibition features two monumental installations that upend traditional ideas regarding architecture, museum display practices, fine art, and craft. foreverago (2017) is the artist’s largest tapestry to date, at 127 feet long. GAGOSIAN – SAN FRANCISCO

Gagosian is pleased to present an exhibition of sculptures and drawings by Giuseppe Penone, his first in San Francisco. Penone uses objects from the natural world to document the intertwined relationship between humans and nature in evolution over a macroscopic, geological timeline. This exhibition will feature a selection of works in bronze, stone, and marble illustrating Penone’s ability to seamlessly transpose human-made and naturally occurring patterns. Giuseppe Penone is on view from September 17 through November 9, 2019. For more information please call 415.546.3990 or visit www.gagosian.com. ABOVE/BELOW

PACE GALLERY –PALO ALTO

Pace Gallery is pleased to present LYNDA BENGLIS, on view thru October 23, 2019, the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery since joining in January this year. Bringing together twenty mid- to largescale works from the 1970s to the present, this exhibition highlights Benglis’s ceaseless investigation of materiality, form, and weight throughout her highly prolific career. Ranging from her earlier use of latex, foam, and aluminum to her more recent investigations with polyurethane, bronze, and handmade paper, the works in this exhibition provide an overview of Benglis’s expansive creative output, showcasing her voracious ability to push the boundaries of sculpture time and time again. The gallery is located at 220 Hamilton Avenue, Palo Alto, CA. For more information please call 650.561.4077 or visit www.pacegallery.com

DAWSON COLE FINE ART–CARMEL

Dawson Cole is proud to present Richard MacDonald: A Convergence of Spires, Beauty and Passion. Artist reception is October 5th from 7-9 pm. and October 6th from 12-3 pm. The exhibition runs from October 4 thru October 31, 2019. Richard MacDonald’s body of work continues to evolve around certain “architectural” elements which give his work a uniquely expressive dimension. The recurring use of the slender, elongated “spire” as well as the elevation of the form through the use of a descending, flowing line of drapery, creates a distinctive look that is becoming a signature of Richard MacDonald’s work. These artistic elements emphasize the sense of time and gravity that adds to our ability to involve ourselves in the action portrayed. The gallery is located at the corner of Lincoln & Sixth in Carmel California. For more information please call 800.972.5528 or visit www.dawsoncolefineart.com

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents Thomas Joshua Cooper: The World’s Edge marking the artist’s first large-scale museum presentation. For fifty years, Thomas Joshua Cooper (United States, b. 1946, active Scotland) has been making photographs outdoors. Often realized through intense physical travel to remote and isolated sites, these stunning, large-scale, black-and-white photographs encapsulate the psychological impact of each place through geographic and atmospheric details. The World’s Edge is on view until September 26, 2020. For more information please call 323.857.6000 or visit www.lacma.org RIGHT

MONTEREY MUSEUM OF ART

Penelope Gottlieb: The Invasive Plant, reproductions of classic John James Audubon prints overpainted with tightly woven bands of invasive plant species is on view at the Monterey Museum of Art. The Invasive Plant series appropriates and significantly alters existing print plates from the John James Audubon archive. In these paintings, Gottlieb reconsiders the iconic 19th century imagery by binding the classic Audubon birds with tightly woven bands of invasive plant species. The images stage an invasion of this historical imagery, enacting the ravages of a contemporary ecological phenomenon wherein non-native species are introduced into an environment and overtake the balance of its delicate ecosystem. Through this exhibition, the Monterey Museum of Art seeks to draw attention to the growing environmental crisis and the fragility of our natural surroundings. In a region steeped in rich artistic tradition and surrounded by magnificent natural wonders as Monterey Bay, Gottlieb’s work shines as a testament to a growing culture of preservation and awareness. From vanishing species to invasive plants, Gottlieb shares how she uses beauty to spark a conversation about the fragility of nature. Penelope Gottlieb: The Invasive Plant is on view until December 8, 2019. For more information please call 831.372.5477 or visit www.montereyart.org. 32 | CALIFORNIA HOMES

UCI INSTITUTE & MUSEUM FOR CALIFORNIA ART

UCI Institute and Museum for California Art is pleased to present El Camino del Oro at the Joan Irvine Smith and Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Gallery from September 14 through January 11. The first California mission was founded in San Diego by Spanish Franciscan friars in 1769. Over the next 50 years, Spanish missionaries established a total of 21 missions throughout the state all connected by El Camino Real, also known as Royal Road or the King’s Highway. By 1850, when California became the 31st state of the Union, many of the missions had been abandoned and were in ruins. It wasn’t until the 1890s, when artists began portraying the missions as relics of California’s history, that a serious effort was made to preserve and restore them. One of the oldest paintings on display dates from 1886. Painted by Alexander Harmer (1856-1925), it shows the front courtyard of the Mission San Juan Capistrano. What is now one of the most beautiful gardens in California was then dry and dusty, with just a few geraniums against the pillars of the arcade. For more information please call 949.476.0294 or visit www.imca.uci.edu.

Notebook | VISIONARY

CH Did you grow up in a creative environment? When did you first see a spark of your creative self ? CL I grew up with parents that saw immediately that I was headed down a creative road in life. I would sit for hours alone in my room, doing all kinds of art projects. I think when I beaded my father a lampshade for his birthday when I was 5, his dreams of me being a lawyer or doctor were put to rest. They always supported all kinds of wild ideas I would come up with. To be honest, I have never seen another path for me. What I do is my complete passion in life. I wake up everyday feeling so grateful and lucky that this is my job in life. I don’t know another way. CH What restaurant projects have you worked on, and are you currently working on? CL So restaurants are a huge passion of mine. I love working with the chefs, who are also artists themselves. We help to translate the story of their food to the walls and decor of the space. We have have been very lucky 38 | CALIFORNIA HOMES

In San Francisco, we are working on the new restaurant Dear Inga with The Nopa/Liholiho Group. We just finished The Taub Family Outpost Restaurant designed by Studio Becky Carter opening soon in Sonoma. And finally, we are working with my dear friend Shelley Lindgren on her A16 restaurant. All very exciting!!

to work with some amazing chefs and restaurants. We have done Robin (SF), Nightbird (SF), Tosca (I restored the entire space), The Black Cat ( jazz club in SF), Pearl 6101(SF), August 1 Five (SF), The Riddler (in New York and SF), Bottega (Yountville), Coqueta in Yountville and SF, Alba Ray’s (SF), A16 in Oakland and SF. We are currently working with Melissa Perello from Frances and Octavia in San Francisco who is doing a beautiful restaurant in Los Angeles, called M Georgina.

CH Are you working on any projects out of the Bay Area? CL I am constantly on the road painting all over the country, and sometimes the world. Right now we have many projects in New York, Washington DC, Detroit, Nashville, Los Angeles, Montana, Austin, Santa Barbara and I am working on a personal project in Puglia Italy where my husband is from. CH Have you worked on any retail environments? CL My best friend is in fashion and has a beautiful store in San Francisco on Sacramento Street called Betty Lin. I often accompany her to Paris fashion week, and she lets me take my inspiration from there to her walls, floors, and canvases in her store. We have done the whole store for her, and we constantly change it, as fashion is persistently changing. It keeps her clients continuously wondering what we will do next. We also every year partner with A16 to create a pop up for Fog Fair, the art show in

San Francisco. We need to have the room ready within hours, so it is a fun, intense way of producing a highly impactful space CH Where do you find inspiration? CL Honestly, I am in a constant state of being inspired. It is everywhere you look. First of all, I am surrounded by so many creative women in my life who supply me with so many ideas. Fashion is also a huge influence on my work. I love looking at the color and collections, even from the past. My favorites are Dries Van Noten, McQueen, JeanPaul Gaultier, Yves Saint Laurent. I also have the most incredible clients who constantly push me to

exert the boundaries for them and their projects. They inspire originality and imagination. Lastly, travel and nature. I love getting lost in cities, looking at architecture, landscape, all of it. I learn so much from seeing the world. And those experiences end up on many of my walls. CH What is your favorite quote: CL “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away Pablo Picasso. CH Caroline Lizarraga, carolinelizarraga. com, IG: caroline_lizarraga

Iconic designer Dakota Jackson Opens Flagship Showroom at the Pacific Design Center “I’VE BEEN A PRESENCE IN LOS ANGELES

building friendships and goodwill for almost four decades. The PDC has been an enduring international destination for the most exclusive designs and the discerning design community” says Jackson The Los Angeles space is a play on whites in different media from the sparkling skating rink like tile flooring to an out scaled 80-foot curtain wall with a lyrical cutout motif. Unexpected splashes of subtly colored sheers punctuate the set. The opening will be just in time to display his latest Chess and Checkers’ furniture collection. Jackson explains, “Chess and Checkers are games that go back for thousands of years in different permutations. The pieces are iconic; themselves a distillation of the various cultures and evolution of form

over time. The games are recreational, competitive, and deeply intellectual. The direct sleek lines and hues of the tables presented in parchment and rich veneers add up to a careful study of the form.”

Books REVIEWED BY KATHY BRYANT

The New Elegance: Stylish, Comfortable Rooms for Today Text by Timothy Corrigan with Michael Boodro Elegance is the perfect word to describe the interiors designed by internationally celebrated designer Timothy Corrigan. This stylish book is a follow-up to his Invitation to Chateau du Grand-Luce where he described his restoration of an 18th-century French chateau. He is the only American designer honored by the French Heritage Society for his restoration work on several French landmark buildings. Corrigan, who is an AD100 and ELLE DECOR A-list designer, always gives his projects a layered and detailed look that makes the rooms look as if generations of families have lived in the rooms and collected the art and artifacts through the centuries. At the same time, there is a California ease to the looks that combine well with European sophistication. Eleven diverse houses illustrate Corrigan’s design aesthetic in this informative, glossy book. Ranging in style from a John Fowler-inspired London townhouse and a Los Angeles

AREA RUGS ARE OFTEN THE UNSUNG HEROES OF A DESIGN SPACE—

but how does one begin to select and understand the value of these beautiful walkable art works? In many ways, a hand-crafted rug can be more valuable than a photograph or a painting, and yet many designers struggle with how to determine, and better yet, communicate its intrinsic value to their clients. Rugs can be undervalued simply by an absence of knowledge, and a misunderstanding of their actual value. They should be thought of as fine paintings without a frame. When you hear the phrase ‘walk on art,’ you can begin to truly re-think what is right beneath your feet. Mehraban Rugs in Los Angeles works daily with interior designers and consumers, discussing how to dissect a rug as a work of art, choose quality, and understand the thousands of hours that go into these highly complex woven items. Soheil and Sammy Mehraban are third generation rug experts who learned the trade from their grandfather and father, and have a vast knowledge about what designers are seeking today in area rugs. Their Los Angeles showroom on La Cienega features an array of vintage

tribal pieces, flat weaves, and very modern, artful designs. The coveted Haute Bohemian Collection, also known as the “official rug of Malibu,” features clean lines poetically inspired by glimpses of everyday patterns. According to Soheil and Sammy, “We worked over a year to create the perfect white. And it is perfect.” By fall of 2019 Mehraban will feature seven original collections—all by California designers. Many of their new contemporary lines appeal specifically to cutting-edge designers and architects, and are abstract and conceptual. Other lines appeal to interior designers seeking pure sophistication in their contemporary interiors. As to collectible antique rugs? Mehraban is a decided expert. Says Soheil, “Strengthening and continuing the tradition of oriental rug weaving motivates us to create exciting, irresistible rugs. A Mehraban rug has much to offer a room. It always improves the scene. That’s why we say #mehrabanme.” CH mehraban.com

A NEW MIDCENTURY HOME

Publicist Nancy Joseph Works with Renowned Designer Christopher Kennedy to Create Interiors For Her New Home BY KAVITA DAWSANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAN CHAVKIN

AS A MARKETER AND PUBLICIST for top

names in design, Nancy Joseph has been exposed to the best, most iconic and of-themoment furniture, furnishings and materials. But when it came time to create the interiors for her new Palm Springs home, Joseph conceded that a bit of guidance would not go amiss. Luckily for her, she’d started working with renowned designer Christopher Kennedy, who gladly offered to step in and help Joseph shape her space. “It was five months in the making,” said Joseph, who bought the 2,600 square foot Canyon Estates home earlier this year after deciding to move from Los Angeles. “I love mid-century lines and architecture, the flat roofs and views that I can’t take my eyes off of. In many ways, this is probably the most grown-up place I’ve ever lived in.” (Joseph has kept her 1940’s beach bungalow in Venice.)

Accent pillows and décor from Christopher Kennedy, Inc. LEFT Joseph and Kennedy toast to the 70’s.

She and Kennedy worked on retaining as much as possible of the 1971 Charles Du Bois-built home; the architecture was maintained, and details like the original doorknobs, acrylic sink faucets, bath and kitchen cabinetry and double front doors with oversized brass funeral casket handles serving as pulls. “I wanted to live in a house that had been given new life, but what it once was still shines through,” she said. “We wanted color and contrast and an allencompassing level of sophistication.” Much of their resources went towards surfaces - pulling away layers of wallpaper that had been painted over, ripping out cottage cheese

ceilings, demoing the out-of-date 12 x 12’ marble floor tile. Other elements retained were the mirrored wet bar and retro appliances from the 1970s, which Joseph said had barely been used by the previous owners, who only visited seasonally. The electric cooktop, she said, has push buttons that “remind me of ‘Star Trek.’ I use it, and I love it.” Joseph had an enviable furniture collection of modern classics amassed during her time working with brands like Knoll Studio and Richard Schultz - but much of it was in grey and white. Kennedy directed her to incorporate some color, including sunny yellow seat cushions in the kitchen, and

dramatic paintings for the 12-foot high walls. And the black-and-white kitchen wallpaper was actually designed mid-century. “The art was how Christopher got me to embrace color,” said Joseph. “We snuck in color by adding black as the new primary ground and sprinkling in bursts of muted colors with pillows and decor from his boutique. The design imperative was to pay homage to the time. I think we pulled it off! ” CH You can see this home and others like it during Modernism Week in February 2020. Visit modernismweek.com

BIRGIT KLEIN KNOWS A THING OR TWO about jet-

setting. Born in Germany, she’s lived in London, New York, and LA, with a celebrity client roster that spans Italy, Paris, and Miami. Though she’s used to frequently bouncing between the Hamptons and Beverly Hills, Klein relishes the moments she spends at home in Montecito with her children, family, and friends. There she gives her passport a rest, opting for casual, elegant get-togethers in the garden—that’s fittingly set in the slice of California known as the American Riviera.

“The house reminds me of a French Provincial farmhouse that you could find somewhere in the countryside in South of France and I was immediately drawn to it,” Klein says. “It has this easy relaxed style but with a timeless aesthetic of a European style farmhouse. Working with the home’s architectural lines, abundance of light, and manicured gardens, Klein combined the best of California living with European details. Her first goal was to create an oasis from her international schedule. Inside, this meant subtle shades and soft materials to create a restful retreat. “My life is so busy and my mind is so overstimulated with colors and textures every day that my home needs to be calm and soothing, quiet and relaxing, comfortable and welcoming,” she says. “To blend in with its surroundings I kept the palette to

Woven chairs are plush with patterned pillows for friends to sink into at cocktail hour and nearby a leafy, covered outdoor table is Klein’s go-to spot for intimate dinner parties. When it

comes to entertaining, she insists on keeping glasses full of good wine and setting a beautifully decorated table. Belgian linens, striped napkins, and fresh flowers are a must, which all cue her signature, elegant, global style. “I love to travel and I tend to pick up pieces from all over the place and ship them back,” she says. “The house is full of artwork and accessories I collected during my trips whether for work or pleasure. To me this is what makes a house a home, it’s the collection of items and the meaning or memories that come with them.” CH

who established their brother-sister partnership in Seattle in 2012, have a varied practice, but their residential interiors are deceptively simple. The latest is located on a gentle slope near La Jolla, overlooking the ocean, and they joined the team as construction was beginning. Architect Mark House of the locally based House Designs embraced the site with a walled forecourt, and an open-plan living room with pocketing glass sliders at front and back, divided from the sleeping areas by a poured concrete wall 50 feet long. Steps lead down to a pool and a screen wall of translucent glass shields the garden from neighbors. On plan,

the 8500-square-foot house is a checker-board of rooms that open onto outdoor sitting areas--an inspired response to the benign climate. Stairs ascend to an office that seems to float over the living areas. Designing the interior was a challenge because the client heads a reinforcing steel company and has an engineer’s passion for precision and detail. As David explains, “he likes a few things done well, and we had daily discussions about the look and feel of the house. I was able to specify all the materials and transitions, to infuse simplicity with subtlety, and ensure that every detail would add interest. Luckily, we had worked on another house in La Jolla with this contractor and he had learned how to do a perfect pour on the exposed concrete wall”. The architect set the house well back from the cliff edge and

David dramatized the shift of perspective on the slope, by inserting a flight of steps that connect the raised platform of the house to the pool. Inspiration for the interior came from the owner’s 160-foot yacht, and the designer tried to capture that expression of taste on a larger scale. The house had to double as a stage for weekend entertaining with friends and family, and as a sanctuary when the owner is here alone. Expansive living areas cooled by breezes off the ocean alternate with intimate private spaces. At every stage, the client provided a strong sense of direction and a rigorous scrutiny of what had been done. He admired the authenticity of old wooden barns and that encouraged David to specify hemlock boards for the ceiling of the living room. Slight variations of tone evoke traditional craftsmanship, though the finishes are far more refined than in any farm building. The same attention was given to the oak cabinetry, matching the grains to achieve a seamless continuity. Limestone floors contrast in tone

and texture with the concrete and plaster walls. About 80 percent of the furnishings are custom. “The client would see things he liked but they were not exactly right, so we had them fabricated to order,” explains David. “And because the house is so exposed to sea air, we had the metal chair and table bases flame sprayed to protect them from corrosion and buffed to achieve a sensual finish.” The interior palette is subdued, relying on lush plantings for color. In the living area, white sofas are arranged on a soft-toned Lapchi rug, complementing the Sutherland lounge chairs grouped around a sunken fire pit in the forecourt. There’s a similar emphasis on comfort in the master bedroom and upstairs office. Your eye lingers on the way materials come together and the play of shapes within the airy rooms. Walls and roofs project out to provide shade and carry your gaze to the infinite expanse of the ocean. This is a house that welcomes you inside, and invites you to step outside, to relax and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature. CH

Lin was tasked with creating a comfortable and welcoming interior that would artfully blend modern designs with some of the more traditional elements that were dear to the owners’ hearts. Inspired by a distinctly California aesthetic, Lin wanted to create a light and airy feel throughout the home. A new all-white backdrop laid the foundation for a palette of neutrals accented by pops of color in a diverse yet complementary palette. The colors are playful, yet quiet: hues of rose, dusty blue, ochre and olive in the entry parlor, maroon and mustard in the living room, and a joyful chartreuse in the family room. “We love using a mix of materials in our projects,” says Lin. “It contributes to the balance and character of a space.” Although she kept home’s historic architectural details intact, she carefully edited the interiors to create a

The formal living room became a media room where both children and adults can come together. The home theater is now a much-needed guest room, and the sunroom is now a playroom for the grandchildren. The result is a sophisticated yet comfortable home that maintains its timeless appeal – one that honors both new and cherished pieces and brings the homeowners a renewed sense of joy in their beloved family home. Calm A ROLLING HILLS ESTATES–BASED INTERIOR DESIGNER TRANSFORMS A SECOND RESIDENCE IN LA QUINTA FOR A PALOS VERDES ESTATES COUPLE AND THEIR TWO CHILDREN TEXT BY JENNIE NUNN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK TANNER

to design a second home situated on a golf course in La Quinta, they knew just the person to make their vision come to life: interior designer Anna Hackathorn, founder of Rolling Hills Estates–based eponymous firm. Hackathorn, who once worked for the likes of Michael S. Smith, had also designed their primary residence in Palos Verdes Estates. “We actually went to the same high school [different years], and I didn’t really know them in high school, but we knew of each other and knew each other’s names from around town, ,” says Hackathorn. “They called me about a year-and-a-half ago and said, ‘we’re building a house in the desert and we’d love to have you help us,’ and it was a great project because it’s always fun to do new construction. They wanted it to be comfortable, they liked what we had done in their Palos Verdes house, and they wanted that similar kind of aesthetic but more appropriate for modern architecture in the desert.” But, when Hackathorn initially reviewed the floorplans of the approximately 4,000-square-foot home built by architect Brian Foster of Brian Foster Designs, she encountered a few unique design elements. “They were unconventional because so many of the rooms are triangular,” recounts Hackathorn of the three-bedroom home with a one-bedroom detached casita and multiple outdoor areas for morning coffee and family

gatherings. “It’s super modern and all of the rooms have unusual footprints, so it was tricky, but it was a good challenge.” It was also important to the clients that the furnishings and artwork not skew too stark despite the modern architecture. “The wife likes more traditional and bohemian kinds of things, and she didn’t want it to seem too stark and too typical of the kind of furniture that would normally be in a house like that. It was fun and I think it came together well,” adds Hackathorn of the thoughtful and deliberate design. “We really had to plan well to make sure that all of the furniture would fit. We considered making irregularly shaped rugs, but in the end the clients decided that they preferred rectangular rugs, so we made it work.” For the serene color palette, Hackathorn kept hues neutral in varying tones of crème, sand, and soft blues, and played up textures. “The backdrop is so beautiful, we didn’t want it to compete with that,” explains Hackathorn, who sprinkled in color with photographs by Petros Koublis, Shay Blechynden, and pieces from Fine Art America. “In a lot of my projects, I choose more oil paintings and pieces of that nature, but we felt like this photography captured that desert vibe.” In the open kitchen lined with barstools from RH, white subway tile from Maven Tile & Stone, and vintage cutting boards from Big Daddy’s Antiques, Hackathorn continued the easy flow in the adjacent dining

Floor-to-ceiling pocket doors in the living room connect the indoors to the outdoors and allow for lounging and taking in 360-views of the mountains. The sanctuarylike master with a trio of oceanscapes by Petros Koublis, is replete with a rug, bed, and side tables from Serena & Lily, and ceramic table lamps by Jamie Young. “I love that the lamps are very textured and they have that kind of rustic lean to them,” says Hackathorn. The children’s bedrooms (both of whom are in college) have a hint of pattern play and layers. The daughter’s room features an upholstered headboard in Walter G fabric, side tables from RH Teen, and a striped box from McGee & Co., and the son’s room is appointed with lamps from Noir, a rug by Dash & Albert, and a pillow by Indian Pink pillows. The project, completed just in time for Thanksgiving last year, is now considered a desert refuge for family weekend getaways, entertaining, and golf trips. “I think the gas was literally turned on the day before,” recalls Hackathorn, of the slow but steady race to the design finish line. “They are dream clients, and this is one my favorite design projects. It’s nice starting from scratch, and I think they like that it’s really comfortable and cohesive.” CH

MIDPOINT

IN NAPA VALLEY

The Food Soldiers Of Rutherford BY KENNETH FRIEDENREICH

SO THERE I WAS TYPING AWAY in my garret one chilly night when my keystroke missed. Instead of “foot soldiers,” I struck the letter “d.” So, like Dr. Fleming, who wanted to make a smoothie and ended up by mistake with penicillin, I invented the food soldier. West Point will never be the same. A food soldier, it occurred to me, represented a go-to bottle of wine any winemaker with kitchen sense would pair with a favorite meal. The idea is so appealing because the wine projects the character of the dish without itself going AWOL. This is the kind of wine that can come from any region.

What makes the Rutherford wine so distinctive, a growing area of 7,600 acres, with a trade association of 65 grower and vintner members, is first its midpoint placement in the Napa Valley, warm rather than hot, cosseted by marine air, comprised of slopes over here and flat river land over there comes down to grapes, largely Cabernet Sauvignon. Steve Tonella, president of the eponymous winery who has lived with this territory for several decades, puts the matter in perspective. He told me it’s the acid balance here that thrills him most—that element helping to organize and preserve what’s in the bottle, adding these points: “Rutherford is an appellation within the appellation, which has a diversity of soils, exposure, and orientation that is as complex as Napa Valley. “The alluvial soil fans reach into Rutherford from the

ABOVE Rancho Caymus Inn, a boutique hotel in Rutherford, provides a welcoming respite in between tastings.

Visiting Rutherford calls to mind places like the Grill, an industry gathering haunt where every table has several bottles opened at once, a kind of parade ground for growers and winemakers. What we gather here are inspirations that come from the kitchens of those producing these wines. The searching out will improve any round of tastings. The Rancho Caymus Inn located in the revamped town center is a good place to rusticate as you find your way to a winemaker’s home kitchen or special event. The food soldiers, wherever they march, will help secure a perfect meal.

east and west, combined with warm days & cool evenings and elevation, make Rutherford the perfect place to grow Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals. “Rutherford ranges from the wonderful western hillside to the western benchland that yields amazing round, deep, complex wines with great elegance and balance. Rutherford Dust represents a later ripening site in the heart of the valley with slow maturation which adds finesse and complexity to the wines.” The distinctive wines coming out of this landscape allow even those new to viticultural areas to soon recognize the varietals grown in a place where some grapes look down to the valley floor from the western hills and others that enjoy the warmer sun on lowlands reaching to the natural division of the Napa River. The Rutherford “Bench” and its “Dust” call attention to some unique properties of fruit coming from this location in the middle of the Napa Valley. The place always matters for wine. The pioneers associated with the marquee wineries here such as Beaulieu or Inglenook will figure in any respectable history of the state’s wine industry. Maynard Amarine and Andre Tchelistcheff put the place of origin at the top of making superior wine from varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon. The “dust” is pertinent to the effects on mouthfeel and flavors once the cork pops—chocolate, coffee, and some elusive acidity that encourages cellaring wines from the area.

Chef Britny Maureze created this recipe for Sequoia Grove’s Terroir Tasting experience. “My goal is not only to enhance what’s already great about our wines but to challenge the pairing paradigm and encourage others to do the

Wine same. Seafood and red wine aren’t an obvious fit, but by choosing the right flavors and textures, fish can pair just as well, if not better, than your typical red meat option. Black cod is a decadent fish, providing richness and protein, both essential elements to reigning in youthful tannins. The complex spices, tart plum, and creamy purée bolster layers of earth and toasted barrel, concentrated fruit, and luscious texture.” - Chef Britny Maureze

S. R. TONELLA CELLARS Food Soldier Wine: S. R. Tonella Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford Owner: Steve Tonella Recommended pairing: Grilled Herb-Crusted Rack of Lamb with Mint Chimichurri

CONN CREEK WINERY Food Soldier Wine: 2016 Conn Creek Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker: Elizabeth DeLouise-Gant Recommended pairing: Gnocchi Di Zucca (Gnocchi with Kabocha squash, sage, and Pecorino cheese) Travis Westrope created this pairing for Conn Creek’s Anthology Club members. “It’s a simple yet flavorful dish that brings out the black currant and blackberry flavors in the wine.” - Chef Travis Westrope

DAVIS ESTATES Food Soldier Wine: Davis Estates 2016 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, Rutherford Owner: Mike Davis Recommended pairing: This 2016 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc from Rutherford glistens with a light straw hue and brilliant clarity. The aromas of lime zest and tropical fruit are bright and vibrant. A soft, rich mouthful opens to a well-balanced acidity that reveals subtle nuances of lime, grapefruit, and pineapple. “It reminds me of a vacation in a glass, paired perfectly with sunshine, the pool, and good friends.” - Mike Davis

These pairings suggest that the varietals featured in the recipes have the mojo and flavor profiles to stand up against savory dishes conceived to show off the virtues of the Rutherford AVA. As a famous general noted centuries ago, armies move on their stomachs. We might add, they prevail at dinner on their palates. Special thank you to the Rutherford Dust Society—who celebrates its 25th anniversary this year—for providing the inspiration. Ranch Refined Designer Nathan Turner Puts A Luxe Spin On Solvang’s Alisal Ranch BY JENNIFER BLAISE KRAMER

SET BETWEEN FARMLANDS AND VINEYARDS 30 miles north of Santa Barbara, Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort has been a longtime getaway for Southern California families and stars. Doris Day and Clark Gable (who married Lady Silvia inside the resort’s old library) are among the stars who’ve flocked to this 10,000acre luxury dude ranch over the past 75 years to ride horses, hike, fly fish, and sit around the campfire at famed Western-style cookouts. So, when it came time turn the ranch experience up a notch, Alisal looked to yet another star—interior designer, author, and Native Californian Nathan Turner—to raise the bar. Turner, who recently penned the lifestyle book, I Love California: Design and Entertaining the West

Coast Way (Abrams, $40), truly put his heart into designing the Turner House, a three-room guest cottage that’s full of vintage furnishings, handcrafted furniture, and iconic Western prints. Having grown up on a ranch in Northern California, Turner was inspired by the property’s authentic feel and nostalgic history. “It was so important to me to honor the legacy of Alisal,” Turner says. “Coming from a California cattle family myself, I know and understand the lifestyle. I wanted my rooms to feel as of they’ve always been there, collected over time.”

Balancing rustic and chic, Turner took design cues from the resort’s California-Monterey style. He filled the house with mixed materials that work with the property’s age and patina, including reclaimed barnwood paneling, river rock stone, and classic ironwork, while creating an independent, elevated, and standalone experience. “It’s unique in the way that it really is a one-off, filled with rich Ralph Lauren fabrics, vintage tables, and antique furniture and rugs,” he says, adding that he didn’t stray too far from the “ranch path,” but layered the cottage more than the other rooms on property to make it feel comfortable, collected, and personal. “It feels as if you’re staying at someone’s ranch house.” CH
