W

elcome to the 2020 edition of The Essential Guide to Architects & Builders. We pride ourselves on featuring, in this special interest publication, the very best of architects and builders. California architects have a reputation for expanding the cutting edge of design, but never losing sight of our architectural heritage. In this issue architect Anthony Pool, AIA, LEED talks about the shifting transitions and shifting

ground in the design industry. Architecture is one of the few remaining noble fields where those who choose to participate do so because architecture can change the world. In his piece on Building, realtor and writer Bret Parsons also talks about building that dream home and making it a reality. Finding the perfect builder first is his suggestion, and I agree. A new section called Elements of Home has been added to this issue. We have been asked for over two years to give home products a place in the Guide, hope you also enjoy the new section. The Essential Guide to Architects & Builders will be expanding its reach through added newsstands and longer newsstand exposure, not only in California but in other high demographic areas in the country. We had a wonderful time producing this new issue and hope you find it informative as well as visually beautiful.

Master Architects of Southern California 1920-1940: Wallace Neff

Text by Marc Appleton, Bret Parsons, Eleanor Schrader Master Architects of Southern California 1920-1940, a new twelve-volume series, highlights the work of architects working during those decades when Southern California was booming and entrepreneurs needed to build houses to showcase their status and wealth. They hired the best architects available who were often given free rein to create a unique edifice. This third volume focuses on Wallace Neff, one of the most influential residential architects to practice in Southern California. In a career that spanned over six decades, Wallace Neff designed houses ranging from vernacular style to grand mansions, with a proliferation of homes in the Pasadena area. His ability to work in a variety of styles from Spanish Colonial revival to French Normandy made him a favorite. Although he is now known as an architect to the stars for his work for Claudette Colbert, Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant and many others, he was also known for his “bubble houses.” Neff described them as “a revolutionary method providing for a low-cost, labor-saving process of extremely rapid construction of permanent houses and buildings.” Co-author and renowned architect Marc Appleton of Appleton Partners says, “These nearly forgotten architects needed to be memorialized since their work is quickly disappearing. That’s the purpose of the series.” All the books in the series contain numerous historic photographs which document both the exteriors and the interiors. Shifting Grounds IN ARCHITECTURE BY ANTHONY POON, AIA, LEED

LANDRY DESIGN GROUP

38 | CALIFORNIA HOMES

A S EARTHQUAKES AND FIRES CHALLENGE OUR COMPLACENCY

as a decade concludes, the design industry confronts transitions and shifting grounds. No, not trends in popular paint colors. And not faux-Cape-Cod homes on the west side. Architecture is one of the few remaining noble fields where those who choose to participate do so because architecture has the capacity to change the world.

SUSTAINABILITY & RESILIENCE Sustainability is not a fad, no longer simply a movement. It is mission critical. Being green does not comprise solar panels on the roof with recycled materials in the kitchen. Being an advocate for the

environment has evolved into a lifelong commitment to our global community. Last year as Poon Design Inc. received its certification as a sustainable business from the California Green Business Network, our pledge goes beyond saving on paper and electricity. Our calling involves educating clients, participating in community service, and thinking beyond the physical environment, to include our economic and social circumstances. Add the recent interests in biophilia and the instinctive association to nature and all forms of life. More crucial is what is known today as resilient design. How does architecture recover from disaster, whether fire or flood—even terrorism or a school shooting?

TECHNOLOGY & PROCESS I embrace the old school tools of my trade that include a pencil, triangle and drafting table. A quantum leap for design arrived with digital technology. Computers and algorithms are not just powerful tools for the creative process, but also for construction. But I argue that our clients have been saturated with this promising call of a technological future. For the design process, hands-on, rolling-up-one’ssleeves, real-time methods replace clicks of the mouse. Expressive hand drawings far outshine the heavilyPhotoshopped computer renderings. A 3D -rendering captures what the house might look like. But a conceptual sketch captures the emotion. When in construction, Poon Design challenges the machinemade and the factory-produced output. We embrace the carefuly crafted that expresses the human hand. BLURRING THE LINES Where advantageous, architects became designbuilders. Where necessary, lines between architects and interiors designers became fuzzy. Where strategic, architects design furniture, and interior designers design bedding and kitchenware. Though the business model of single-minded specialization is an expedient

40 | CALIFORNIA HOMES

method to market one’s brand, such as being the expert of Spanish Colonial estates in Beverly Hills, the current industry reveres the design companies of greater depth and complexity. As Frank Lloyd Wright promoted decades ago, ambitious design studios offer an array of services under one roof, from architecture to interiors, from furniture to graphics, from landscape to product design, from fashion to music curation. For each designer focusing exclusively on luxury single-family residences, there are architects embracing tract homes, prefabricated ADUs, affordable housing, and co-living mixed-use projects. Why can’t the architect of homes design a Buddhist temple?

CONSTANT CHANGE Practically a cliché these days, Heraclitus proclaimed, “The only constant in life is change.” The paradoxical truism still applies. I don’t have a crystal ball, nor do my fellow classmates. But we are somewhat Futurists and we encounter the patterns. 1) The significance of community outweighs the consequence of self. 2) Face-to-face, hands-on interaction prevails over phone texts and posting on Instagram. 3) There are no limits to what a designer can design, what a creative mind can create.

Paul Brant Williger Architect

ORDER, RESOLUTION & BEAUTY For more than three decades, Paul Brant Williger has dedicated his talents to fulfilling the residential requirements and dreams of a host of discriminating high-end clients. The reputation he has built is that of a gifted architect with a proven ability to engage with patrons in such a way as to permit them to articulate and realize their own visions. Williger began his career in the office of Robert A.M. Stern and, like Stern, displays a keen understanding of the requisites for luxury living, his bespoke skills having been honed in the affluent enclaves of Southern California, from Laguna Beach and Montecito to Malibu and Beverly Hills. Although known for his fluency in a number of architectural traditions, Williger is not one to place style over substance. “The signature or brand is not crucial for me. What is important is that I have realized my clients’ desires and gone beyond their expectations. That’s when I know I have done my job.” This mantra has served him well and has been one of the keys to his building the exclusive and discerning client base that has followed him to his namesake architectural firm, Paul Brant Williger. “My approach,” he explains, “is to begin with the clients’ dreams, together with the site and the project parameters, and to articulate these into a built form. My task is to find the opportunities in each situation which, when addressed intelligently, add depth and richness to a project.” My clients come to me because they know that along the way we will navigate that process without losing sight of the aesthetics. The goal is order, resolution and beauty--not just getting a building permit.” Paul Brant Williger Architect, 110 N Doheny Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90211, 310.490.2742, www.willigerarchitect.com

McClean Design

DEFINING CALIFORNIA LIFESTYLE Irish-born Paul McClean is one of today’s leading contemporary architects whose elegant residential work is synonymous with the quintessential California lifestyle. McClean’s projects, from modest homes to spacious estates, have made him the go-to-architect for chic contemporary spaces. Light, air, expansive views and water are the hallmarks of his work. He continually seeks original ways to create homes that allow their owners a place to retreat from the busy world around them and connect with the natural environment. Eliminating the barrier between indoors and outdoors is thus an essential component of his custom-built residences. McClean also places an emphasis on texture and natural materials and makes extensive use of glazing systems to maximize views. Established in 2000, McClean’s firm continues to help reimagine the Southern California lifestyle. Their projects reflect an interest in modern living and provide a warm light-filled contemporary space. Although based in Southern California, the firm is busy working on homes throughout the Western United States and abroad. Their projects can be seen in such diverse places as Canada, England and Thailand. McClean Design strives for excellence in architecture and pushing the boundaries of imagination with extraordinary spaces designed to transform lives, while committing to environmentally sustainable design practices. Paul recently released his first book, McClean Design: Creating the Contemporary House. Written by Philip Jodidio and published by Rizzoli Electa, the book takes us behind the scenes of twenty-one of the architect’s ultra-modern homes completed in the past fifteen years. NMA Architects

NO ONE KNOWS QUITE HOW TO CREATE A SENSE OF PLACE LIKE NMA NMA Architects work with clients who appreciate what the Santa Barbara life is all about. People who not only want a home designed around their own unique lifestyle, but one that’s also sensitive to the local environment and connected to the beauty around it. This way of working comes directly from the deeprooted beliefs of partners Dave Mendro and Mary Andrulaitis. They have been in California over 25 years, earning their credentials as old-school locals, and constantly evolving their understanding of the central coast, creating close relationships with local craftsmen, designers and agencies so their clients get the very best results. It’s also important to NMA that they spend as much time as possible with each client, from first sketches to the last day of the build, being there every step of the way. It’s all of these things together that make the difference between a good project and a great one. NMA knows their work needs to be more than just beautiful, it also needs to complement and respect this place we’ve all grown to love. Since its inception in 1991, Michael Lee Architects has focused primarily on the design and construction of residential and small commercial projects. The firm has been published internationally and honored by the American Institute of Architects. Taking inspiration from the coastal yet urban surroundings of the Manhattan Beach office, the design signature of the firm is not married to a specific architectural style but rather revolves around the approach to spaces and lifestyle. Essential elements in a Michael Lee home include a sense of ease with meaningful, light filled, and well-used interior and exterior rooms that seek to maximize the enjoyment of our beautiful Los Angeles weather. The value of good residential design lies in its ability to create an atmosphere of calm within the space in which the day begins and ends. With that in mind both functionality and warmth are of premium importance. The design objective at Michael Lee Architects is to create spaces that are truly custom to each client and a reflection of who they are and what makes them feel at home. Michael G. Imber Architects WESTERN SPIRIT WITH A CLASSICAL TWIST

Michael Imber was born and bred in Texas, and his classical, yet modern ranch and country houses dot the plains like so many tumbleweed. There’s something pleasingly familiar and site appropriate about his work; clearly he speaks the Lone Star lingo. But with the opening of a San Francisco office, the award-winning architect is set to expand his vernacular. And, according to him, it won’t be that much of a stretch. “In many ways, Texas and California have a similar history,” he says. “They were both somewhat culturally isolated, they were both once part of Spain and Mexico, and they share similar landscapes that have forged a fortitude in the people. The architecture reflects all of that.” For Imber, who says the heritage of a place influences all of his work, it was a natural second home. But that’s not to say he considers his current home of San Antonio and his adopted San Francisco one in the same. “San Francisco is among the most beautiful and unique cities in the world,” Imber says. “Working on some projects here, and now opening this office, helps us understand the city and the transitions it’s going through. It also helps us better know the landscape, which ranges from cool, foggy urban landscapes to wide open, sunny spaces.” The new setting is providing him with some new cultural references to incorporate in his work. “I love the texture and character of the Bay Area,” he says. “Clinker brick, shingled houses in the style of Willis Polk or Ernest Coxhead—I look forward to referencing this West Coast character while looking toward the future.” Michael G. Imagine stepping through that front door for the very first time into a house made just for you, a home that reflects your vision, not someone else’s. No more tiny closets, odd room arrangements, inadequate bathrooms–everything is as you like it, where you like it and how you like it. And imagine the pride and satisfaction of entertaining friends and family in an atmosphere of comfort and beauty. This isn’t just an idle fantasy. You’re going to make it a reality. You just have to do one small thing–actually build the house. You may think the first order of business is to find the perfect lot, then comes the architect, and finally, the builder. Makes sense, yes? But you may actually be putting

the cart before the horse. The fact is, finding the right builder first could save you both time and money, the two most critical things you’ll want to save on when building. Most people don’t think of the builder when it comes to finding the lot, but good builders always know the best places to build. They know the market, the ever-shifting trends, and they know fair prices. While the architect or designer may create the plans, it's the builder who literally turns the dream into reality. They do so much more than merely put one brick on top of the other. They plan and keep the project on time and on budget. They navigate their way through a myriad of ever-changing, evergrowing rules and codes. They keep themselves at the forefront of technology, using computer models and geological studies to ensure your home is truly built on a solid foundation. And by embracing such technologies, builders are able to construct homes on plots of land, which only a short time before, would have been considered unbuildable.

Smart builders often have an ace up their sleeve in the form of a realtor. Not only do they have their own expertise on what land makes the best home sites, realtors keep up with rules and regulations a builder might not otherwise anticipate. Together, your builder and your realtor form a dynamic duo of knowledge and experience – priceless commodities in this highly-competitive market – and all operating for your benefit. And don’t forget, when your builder is licensed through the state, it means he or she has undergone a rigorous approval process overseen by the California Contractor’s State License Board and are sworn to operate in a safe, competent and professional manner. But with more than 100,000 general contractors licensed in California, how do you find the right one for you and your project? Thankfully, California Homes has done all the leg-work and put together the following helpful guide of highly-qualified professionals from across the Golden State. Now, relax and think of what you’re going to serve at the housewarming party!
