• Passionate about connecting people to their land and nature.
• Protecting families, homes and properties from fire.
• Providing a legacy for current and future generations to enjoy.
Exploring, enjoying and fully connecting with nature is one of Randy’s passions. He weaves that passion into his trail builds. As a business, Trailscape truly believes the ability to fully enjoy one’s property is essential to every home. Trails enable an instant connection to the land thus allowing homeowners to access otherwise inaccessible areas. In many ways, trails are becoming as important as driveways providing access to multiple points of interest.
In addition, trails offer a higher level of safety, security and value. “Our trails are constructed in a way that they are wide enough with clearance on either side of excess brush that they naturally create effective fire breaks which help protect our clients, their families and their properties.”
Randy Martin has an award-winning team of professionals who design, build and maintain trails for private landownersand public entities. He often likes to share that, “while it may appear that trail construction is simple “landscaping,” this is not the case. Trail building is both art and science. The art part is augmenting the natural beauty and giving the user a sense of flow. While building a trail is not “rocket” science, it is the science of solving multiple terrain challenges and making the trail last for decades.”

Preservation & Craftsmanship
Looking through the 2023 edition of The Essential Guide to Architects, Builders & Design, a theme is apparent: preservation and craftsmanship. We are surrounded by behind-the-scenes sustainability, from the historic buildings SIA (Saving Iconic Design) are fighting for, a textile Mill in downtown Los Angeles, the artisans from QuarryHouse that are continuing the legacy of craftsmanship, and Coup D’Etat for creating an incubator for artisans in their gallery-like design showrooms in San Francisco and Los Angeles. A high-priority initiative for California Homes is the support and preservation of craftsmen and artisans in California. The state has workrooms with several generations of family members continuing the legacy of artisan skills. California Homes magazine wants to support this community to ensure the next generation continues to embrace this heritage. In a state with close to 40 million residents, we have the resources to support this community.
The Essential Guide includes a selected group of architecture, building, and design industry leaders to help you bring your dreams to life. They have been carefully vetted by California Homes editors and represent the best in their field of expertise. A big thank you and gratitude for your continued readership and support of California Homes.

REVIEWED BY KATHY BRYANTSpanish Colonial Style: Santa Barbara and the Architecture of James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig
Text by Pamela Skewes-Cox and Robert Sweeney
Introduction by C. Ford Peatross
Photography by Matt Walla
Most everyone who has visited Santa Barbara has been struck by the classic Spanish-style houses seen there. Spanish Colonial Style celebrates this tradition in architecture whose hallmarks include whitewashed stucco and plaster walls, wood-beamed ceilings, dramatic fireplaces, and, above all, mystery and romance.
“Today in America, the materials and architectural forms and details of the Spanish Colonial Revival are ubiquitous, an unquestioned aspect of everyday life,” writes C. Ford Peatross in the Introduction. “This highly influential and distinctive vocabulary was arrived at in the space of a few years in the late 1910s and early 1920s.” James Osborne Craig has not been given as much credit for popularizing this form as he should have in part due to his untimely death in 1922 at the age of 33.
Architects James Osborne Craig and Mary McLaughlin Craig were early proponents of the style and influential masters of the form. This book gives a history of both their architectural careers as well as the style that can be seen throughout Southern California. Featured are historical photographs, plans and drawings which give an insider’s view of how the style progressed starting in the early part of the twentieth century.
The Craigs played pivotal roles in the development of the Spanish Colonial Revival and other styles of architecture in Santa Barbara. Besides honoring the Craigs this book also shows how Santa Barbara, a small city, took on international importance in the first half of the twentieth century CH

REVIEWED BY KATHY BRYANTFrancis Elkins: Visionary American Designer
Text by Scott PowellCalled “the most creative designer we have ever had” by Billy Baldwin, Frances Elkins (1888-1953) has been revered for her classic, erudite and multidimensional decor. Ahead of her time, Elkins became a successful decorator who by the early 1930s had reached the top of her profession and was considered the only rival to Elsie de Wolfe.
Working throughout the United States, but primarily in California, Elkins brought an international perspective and architectural sensibility to her work. As Scott Powell writes,” Her work was significant for several reasons. She was the first to gracefully blend classical elements with the cutting edge of contemporary Parisian furniture and interior design. She had a perfect sense of scale and balance. Her color sense was superb.”
Elkins led a fascinating life which makes this book especially enticing. She traveled widely with her architect brother David Adler who was an important influence on her. She was educated at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and had a social circle that included interior designer Jean-Michel Frank, couturier Coco Chanel, aesthete Charles de
Beistegui, arts patron Misia Set and painter Salvador Dali.
What makes her style influential is her blending of modern European chic with the best of American, English, Asian and Mexican traditions. A talented furniture and fabric designer as well as interior designer, she collaborated with many luminaries.
This fascinating book features never-beforepublished material and includes more than sixty interiors that illustrate her sense of color and gift for mixing periods and styles—from her early work on the Monterey Peninsula to houses she designed in Chicago in the 1920s and 1930s, to the iconic Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu, to houses for film stars like Edward G. Robinson. This is a book that is both enlightening and inspirational. CH

SAVING ICONIC Architecture
SIA Helps Preserve LA’s Architectural Legacy
BY MICHAEL WEBBRON WOODSON AND JAIME RUMMERFIELD
co-founded an upscale interior design firm in Los Angeles, but they are also passionate preservationists. Their successful, year-long campaign to save Richard Neutra’s Chuey House from demolition inspired them to establish Save Iconic Architecture (SIA), a non-profit dedicated to conserving the best of LA’s architectural legacy. Their tastes are eclectic, embracing the vernacular of Spanish-style bungalows, as well as masterworks by leading architects.
Fifty years ago the Walter Dodge House, built by Irving Gill in 1916 as the first great modern residence in America, was wantonly destroyed despite a concerted effort to save it. Since then, many other important houses have bit the dust, despite growing public awareness of the added value of architecture and the best efforts of the LA Conservancy. As land prices soar, many Realtors urge buyers to treat existing houses as tear-downs. In contrast to New York, San Francisco and other major cities, LA does not proactively protect exemplary architecture, and makes it as difficult and costly as possible for individuals to do so.

Bottom: Style-makers, Ron Woodson and Jaime Rummerfield at Dawnridge, the fantastical Beverly Hills estate of legendary Hollywood designer, Tony Duquette built in 1949.SIA is crucially important as a watchdog and advocate, seeking to find sympathetic buyers for endangered properties before a demolition permit is issued. As designers, they have access to houses that are hidden from public view and whistleblowers alert them to potential threats. But it’s an uphill struggle. Recently, a developer tore the façade off an important Paul Williams house, formerly home to Frank Sinatra and David Niven, to disqualify it from protection. He broke the law but paid no penalty. Currently SIA are working to save Paul Williams’ Jay Paley mansion And they are concerned for the integrity of historic neighborhoods that are steadily losing their character—North Westwood Village is a prime example. As Jaime laments, “before you can blink it’s gone. We find that heartbreaking.”

Paul Brant Williger Architect
ORDER, RESOLUTION & BEAUTY
For more than three decades, Paul Brant Williger has dedicated his talents to fulfilling the residential requirements and dreams of a host of discriminating high-end clients. The reputation he has built is that of a gifted architect with a proven ability to engage with patrons in such a way as to permit them to articulate and realize their own visions.
Williger began his career in the office of Robert A.M. Stern and, like Stern, displays a keen understanding of the requisites for luxury living, his bespoke skills having been honed in the affluent enclaves of Southern California, from Laguna Beach and Montecito to Malibu and Beverly Hills. Although known for his fluency in a number of architectural traditions, Williger is not one to place style over substance. “The signature or brand is not crucial for me. What is important is that I have realized my clients’ desires and gone beyond their expectations. That’s when I know I have done my job.” This mantra has served him well and has been one of the keys to his building the exclusive and discerning client base that has followed him to his namesake architectural firm, Paul Brant Williger. “My approach,” he explains, “is to begin with the clients’ dreams, together with the site and the project parameters, and to articulate these into a built form. My task is to find the opportunities in each situation which, when addressed intelligently, add depth and richness to a project.”
My clients come to me because they know that along the way we will navigate that process without losing sight of the aesthetics. The goal is order, resolution and beauty–not just getting a building permit.”
Ike Baker Velten
BLENDING TRADITIONAL WITH CUTTING-EDGE PROCESSES

CASE STUDY
MASTER STONEMASONS QUARRYHOUSE
joined the team of Skurman Architects, Tucker & Marks Design, Level 10 Construction, and Zeterre Landscape Architecture to renovate and restore a historic San Francisco mansion. The Italian Renaissance-style villa, designed by architect Henry Clay Smith in 1927, was inspired by a Fiesole Palazzo. Perched high atop Pacific Heights, the scope of the project for the 6,848 sq ft estate took eight years to complete.
QuarryHouse's involvement began with the Grand Entry, where an intarsia marble floor features a field of Botticino Classico with Oro Toscano medallions etched in Emperador Medium marble. From the entry, a lyrical three-story Botticino Classico marble staircase winds ribbon-like up through the spine of the building. Because the veining needed to match, QuarryHouse spent over a year sourcing marble blocks. They worked with their partner company, CITCO of Verona, on the specifications.
The stonemasons sourced, fabricated, installed, and restored marble throughout the residence's interiors, culminating in a fanciful Grotto and Pool leading to an Italianate garden. A fountain of intertwined dolphins centers the Courtyard. For the fountain sculptures, urns, and rosettes, QuarryHouse selected Talla Marble. Travertino Noce was the foundation for the paving, walls, and stairs. Custom Scala del Pesce cobblestone in Golden Granite covers the winding driveway. Weaving Integrity
Talented Duo Produces a Collection of Textiles with Intention and Fine Craftsmanship
MCLAURIN PIERCY WAS BUILT ON A PASSION for textiles and travel by Clay McLaurin and Todd Piercy.
Clay is a trained textile designer with extensive experience designing for a notable American jacquard weaving mill, and taught textile design at the Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art.
"How textiles are made matters" is central in our everyday conversations. This concept is key to how we source materials, weave our fabrics, and treat our employees. Every component plays an important role in producing the best possible product with the best intention."
Todd has over 20 years of experience in sales and business development for iconic brands such as Ralph Lauren, Etro, and Michael Smith Inc.
“We believe in the art of making; from concept to completion, what we do is truly an art and not a computer doing all the work. Our team has years of training; therefore, we weave with thought and integrity.”
In 2019 they purchased LA Mills, a boutique weaving mill in downtown Los Angeles. This acquisition connects the heritage of American weaving to the future and supports the craft and legacy of California weavers.
The fabrics are rooted in classic design and inspired by authentic American hard work, honesty, and independence values. The finest American wool, linen, and cotton are sourced for the fabrics staying true to the use of natural materials as a core value.

Design Principal Lisa Staprans and her team create interiors that embrace, energize and soothe in a sublime way. They support the idea that form and function need to reinforce each other. Lisa incorporates pieces in her work that tell a unique story. Lisa does not adhere to one particular design style. She is masterful at working with clients to uncover their unique aesthetic, one that best embodies their taste and the way that they live. Whether modern, transitional, eclectic, classic or traditional, Lisa strives to create authentic spaces that embrace a soul and beauty that are timeless.

THE THOUGHTFUL EMBRACE OF CREATIVE LUXURY
ACalifornia native with a deep appreciation for the Bay Area, Kendall Wilkinson has secured a celebrated reputation in the interior design industry as demonstrated both through her portfolio of projects and her best-selling fabric line with Fabricut. Establishing her eponymous San Francisco firm in 1992, Kendall Wilkinson Design (KWD) creates bespoke residences with an emphasis on beauty and comfort.
Kendall was introduced to the world of design through her mother, who was not only an interior designer but also an art connoisseur and style setter. Her creative upbringing was instrumental in honing Kendall’s artistic vision. “I learned from my mother to appreciate the value of color, scale, and texture, and continue to draw inspiration from the fashion world.”
With a foundation of classic design sensibility, Kendall’s style continues to evolve with every project she engages. “As designers, we are informed by artistic, cultural, and technological shifts,” explains Kendall of her custom approach to interior design. KWD’s versatile team of expert designers, project managers, and creative advisors are intensely collaborative, fostering a language between architecture, interiors, and the landscapes they inhabit.
