A history of Cammell Laird 1907 FC Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers, finishing 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season (1907/08). In the early years the club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy (the Shipley Cup) in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The club had their most successful period during the 1970's and 80's winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/5 saw the club reach the FA Vase quarter final before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first club to win the championship of the second and first divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year of that first division triumph, the club reached the FA Vase semi final (losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town) and two years later, the club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the club finished bottom of the Evo Stik North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play off final against Trafford. Last season saw the club finish 11th but the decision was taken by the club to resign from the Evo Stik NPL due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new club was formed on 28th May 2014.

LAIRDS in this competition Cammell Laird FC had pleasing success in this competition. In 2005/06, Lairds came up against Winsford United in the Preliminary Round in a run to the semi-finals, where they were narrowly beaten by Witton Albion. Lairds finest hour in the competition came in 2006/07. After good wins at home to Hyde United and away to Warrington Town and Chester City, Lairds found themselves in a final against Northwich Victoria. With the chance to become the first team from the Wirral to win the cup for over 50 years, Lairds didn’t pass up the opportunity at Witton Albion’s ground, as they won 3-1 to bring the trophy back to Merseyside. After another semi-final appearance in 07/08, Lairds were knocked out at the first round stage by Warrington Town the following year. There was another semi-final appearance in 09/10, before Stockport Sports won 4-2 to gain their place in the final at Lairds’ expense. From 10/11 to 12/13, there were three successive exits at the first time of asking, but Lairds won their first round tie at Congleton Town last season on penalties. Their last game was a 1-0 defeat at 1874 Northwich, but this season 1907 have shown signs of doing better. In their first game under their new name, Lairds played Winsford United on Tuesday 27th January 2015, after the original tie a week earlier was postponed. It was a highly entertaining tie, Joe Holt giving Lairds the lead before a hugely controversial goal by Sam Marshall levelled the scores. Craig Cairns put Lairds 2-1 up, but Jon Jones pegged the home side back again. After having a goal wrongly disallowed because no advantage was played after a foul on Adam Hughes, Lairds had to wait until two minutes from time to win the game, Cairns dispatching a spot kick. The reward for their efforts was tonight’s tie against Congleton Town.

LAIRDS WELCOME…

CONGLETON TOWN THE BASICS

Stadium: Ivy Gardens

Established: 1901

Nickname: The Bears

History In the 1890s, St James’ North Street School amalgamated with another local club, the Messrs Pointons Joiners Shop to form the origins of Congleton Town Football Club. They then became Congleton Hornets Football Club and played at the Willow Street ground. The club’s record league win, was 10-0 against Audley in the 1897/98 season. Congleton Town FC succeeded the Hornets in 1901, playing in the Crewe and District League for four years, winning the league in the first three. In the 1920/21 season they joined the Cheshire County League—widely regarded as the best League outside the Football League. The following season they finished runnersup and won the coveted Cheshire Senior Cup in their first appearance in the Final. The Club then suffered a barren spell until the Senior Cup was won again in 1938. The club didn’t experience success post-WW2 until 1971/72 season when, playing in the Mid-Cheshire League, they won the League Cup. The League Championship was won in 73/74, 75/76 and 77/78, together with the League Cup and the Cheshire Saturday Cup. Although this was the most successful period of the Club’s history as regards silverware, the truly successful period began in the 1981/82 campaign, when promotion to the Second Division of the Cheshire County League was gained. After becoming founder members of the NWCFL top tier, with second place their best finish in 85/6 they joined the NPL when the First Division was formed in 1987. The highlight of the 89/90 season was to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in the Club’s history. Although beaten 2-0 by Crewe Alexandra, that achievement re-kindled local interest in the Club. They enjoyed exciting times in the First Division, but were relegated to the NWCFL in 00/01, despite the appointment of Sean Connor in February. After a poor start to the 01/02 season Sean Connor was replaced as manager by Kevin Langley, ex Everton and Man City; the club made a fine revival and was virtually safe until his shock departure to Kidsgrove Athletic. Bryan Griffiths replaced Langley, and after securing league safety he was formally appointed at the end of the season. Gary Bickerstaffe joined him as assistant and in September 2002 he invited Kevin Langley to return as a player and to help with coaching. When Griffiths left, Kevin Langley was reappointed as manager and Mark Cox joined to complete an experienced management team. A number of players left the club in the summer of 2004 leaving Kevin Langley with

5

the task of rebuilding the side for the 2004/05 campaign. After a poor start and early exits from all major cup competitions, Langley resigned in November 2005, and was replaced by Karl Wilcox. However, Karl Wilcox resigned after 11 defeats in 12 games, and Paul Moore was appointed for the remainder of the season. He guided the team to safety before confirmation of his appointment as permanent manager. 2006/07 saw new sponsors STD Limited, entering a 2-year deal which they then extended a further year. After a steady start to the 2006/07 campaign, Paul Moore left to manage Leek Town and Andy Lee took over the managerial reins. The Bears lifted their first piece of silverware for some time when they won the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup after defeating Witton Albion 3-0 at Wincham Park. At the end of the season Andy Lee stepped down and Anthony Buckle and Darren Twigg were appointed with the task of rekindling the onfield performances. Off the field new floodlights were installed and the stand behind the bottom goal was re-roofed. With two new key local businessmen, Nick Shatwell and Martin Lenton teaming up to add impetus to the club’s ambition, significant development of the club’s facilities started. A redesigned entrance, turnstiles and car park were the first step. Refurbishment of the club house followed and tarmac was laid in the car park. With Ant and Twiggy at the helm, they tried to strengthen the squad for a serious attempt to lift some silverware. However, after an indifferent season in 2010/11 the pair tendered their resignation. 2011/12 saw the club jointly managed by Joe Paladino and Adriano Rigoglioso. Assisted by Joe Gibiliru, the playing side were completely reformed but indifferent results led to their departure. Jim Vince was appointed in February 2012. He was tasked with rebuilding the side ready for a real push for promotion in 2012/13. He was assisted by Steve Hardy. After improvements to the standing area, the club was awarded grade E for their ground in March 2013, ready for the next tier in the pyramid. This year, both Jim and Steve Hardy, now with Andy Alston on the coaching staff, look to improve on last year’s achievements with promotion still the obvious goal. Jim has signed players that will improve the overall quality of the squad and once again push for that elusive promotion place for a return to Northern Premier League football.

To Be FRANK Frank Games gives a view from the boardroom A very warm welcome to the Directors, Committee, Players and Officials from our visitors Congleton Town and can I take this opportunity to wish them a successful season. I have prepared my notes for this game in advance of Saturday's result but hopefully we have achieved the result we need to keep up the pressure at the top. Sadly I won't be able to attend the game tonight due to other commitments, but here is hoping for the right result for the boys. I went recently to watch the Reserves as they also strive for the title in the West Cheshire league, with a big game next month against South Liverpool to come. Speaking of South the club will celebrate there 80th anniversary next month and I wish them well. A couple of dates for your diary our Hotpot Supper is on Thursday 2nd April (it’s Good Friday the next day so a day off for most of us) - our guests will be former Everton and Liverpool legend David Johnson and top comedian Willie Miller. Tickets available from the Social Club at £25 or from Toddy. On the 2nd May we will host our presentation night in the social club, a night for us to celebrate our achievements from the season. MACCA’S Message Manager Paul McNally shares his thoughts I would like to start tonight’s notes by extending a very warm welcome to all staff, players and representatives of Congleton Town. The confidence levels within our squad are excellent at the minute and we fear no team; as we have proved in past encounters with teams in the divisions above we will approach the game with respect for the opposition but also a belief that we can win. The past week has seen the return to the club of Jamie Henders from Witton Albion, he is well known for scoring 36 goals during our 2nd place finish in the Evo Stik League 1. Jamie can not only bring goals to our team but can add work rate, skill and great link up play which we have seen throughout the years he has played here. For a club like us to sign a player of his quality shows that we are moving quickly in the right direction on & off the field. Welcome back to Cammell Laird 1907 Jamie ! Last Saturday I had a very emotional chat with John Couch in regards to his playing career and how he felt at this present time - anyway he broke the news to me that this will be his last season ! Obviously I was gutted but can totally understand his reasons and he did offer to sign on if needed as temporary cover etc for next season. I would like to thank John for all his efforts whilst I have been in charge not only on the playing side but also as a players representative he has been a true loyal servant to Lairds for many years and we wish him all the best for his retirement ! Enjoy the game tonight and hopefully we can celebrate with a victory ! #Testimonial for Couchy, #LairdsFamily Thanks,

Macca Paul McNally, First Team Manager

BURKE’S Banter The editor provides his views Welcome to the MBS Stadium for today’s game against Congleton Town. In particular, we welcome the directors, players, staff and supporters who have made the journey from Cheshire. Firstly, as I said for the Winsford United issue, this programme is smaller than usual. If any Congleton Town fans/groundhoppers would like to come to our game against Cheadle Town on Saturday, you will see a larger programme with more content. However, I hope the quality of the writing and the design is up to our usual standard! I’m going to keep it fairly short but sweet for this one to allow me to put in a short match report for the Winsford game underneath my piece. Again, our match reports are usually longer, but if I didn’t fit it into this issue, there was no chance of it getting in at all, and I think it will do me good to practice writing shorter, briefer match reports! In our last game, we played a strong Daisy Hill side. They have been in the top 6 pretty much all season and yet we made short work of them, which has to be pleasing. With Joe Holt putting us in front early on, and Craig Cairns looking very lively throughout, it was a very one-sided game; the 5-0 margin of our triumph could, perhaps should have been larger. Sadly, our game in Staffordshire at Eccleshall last week was postponed, meaning that Colls were able to take advantage and go top of the league. That may leave us with a midweek trip down to play Steve Lloyd’s side, but we have enough quality to beat any team on our day. The programme is going to the printers before our fourth meeting of the season with Northwich Flixton Villa this Saturday, but hopefully that will beat the weather, and we will get three valuable points! We play a NWCFL Premier Division side for the fourth time this season, having won our last three, so this will provide a really tough test, but hopefully one that will send us through to the semi finals. Finally, I have entered the 21st century, and am now on twitter! If you want to follow me, I am: @pburke_CL1907. Thank you for your support this evening, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home!

Patrick Patrick Burke, Programme Editor LAIRDS LOG CLINICAL CAIRNS A Craig Cairns double saw Lairds through to the Cheshire Senior Cup Quarter Finals For Lairds, Craig Cairns and Steve Ferrigan both returned (Andy Morgan and Danny O’Brien out) for the Cheshire Senior Cup tie against Winsford United. It took just three minutes for Lairds to take the lead, as Winsford only cleared as far as Joe Holt, who fired home. Joe Evans and Cairns then both missed half chances. However, despite dominating the game, Lairds’ good work was undone by an unfortunate refereeing decision—when Sam Marshall was played in over the top, he was miles offside, as everyone in the ground recognised, including the linesman. Yet despite Marshall and everyone else stopping for about 10 seconds, there was no whistle and the Winsford forward finally played on and fired home. Captain Gibiluru was then booked for telling the referee what everyone else was thinking! Perhaps fuelled by the sense of injustice, Cairns had a shot cleared off the line by a defender, and was furious that the goal wasn’t allowed, but the referee got that one right. However, after a free-kick, Cairns was able to convert. This time it was Winsford’s turn to complain, as the ball didn’t look to have fully crossed the line. Evans dragged wide from outside the box, but poor defending allowed United to equalise again. A deep free-kick shouldn’t have got as far as Jon Jones at the far post, but it did and he headed home. However, the referee was soon in the spotlight again. Adam Hughes played a smart ball into the path of Cairns. Cairns finished coolly, but instead of playing advantage, the referee decided to award Lairds a free-kick for the foul on Hughes. The half-time whistle shortly followed. HT: Lairds 2-2 Winsford United The second half saw chances for both teams, but the two defences stood firm. However, Evans then suffered a terrible injury to the jaw that is likely to ensure that he is out for a significant period of time. Langley saved brilliantly when Gavin Ellison was through on goal, before Speed saw a strong penalty appeal waved away. However after a trip by Matthew Tierney on substitute Chris McGann, Lairds did have a penalty, which Cairns had no problems dispatching, and just two minutes from time! Winsford couldn’t create another chance, so Lairds went through to the quarters to play Congleton Town. FT: Lairds 3-2 Winsford United In a game full of controversy, Lairds prevailed, and were deserved winners. That puts them through to another difficult tie at home to Congleton Town in the quarters, but we are three games from our second Cheshire Senior Cup win!
