A history of Cammell Laird 1907 FC Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers, finishing 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season (1907/08). In the early years the club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy (the Shipley Cup) in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The club had their most successful period during the 1970's and 80's winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/5 saw the club reach the FA Vase quarter final before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first club to win the championship of the second and first divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year at that first division triumph, the club reached the FA Vase semi final (losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town) and two years later, the club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the club finished bottom of the Evo Stik North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play off final against Trafford. Last season saw the club finish 11th but the decision was taken by the club to resign from the Evo Stik NPL due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new club was formed on 28th May 2014.

LAIRDS in this competition When Lairds decided to drop down to the North West Counties Football League Division One in the summer, they did so knowing that they would be playing at this level for only the second time in their history. The last time was in 2004/05 and it was probably the most successful season in the club’s history, so let’s hope for a repeat this season! After playing in the West Cheshire League since 1948-49 no one could have predicted how successful that season would be. Lairds comfortably won the title, scoring 142 league goals. That remains a record for this division (which only Nelson last season have come close to breaking). At the time it was a record for the NWCFL as a whole, and only FC United of Manchester’s tally of 157 goals in the Premier Division of 06/07 have beaten that since. During 04/05 Lairds scored 4 or more goals in a game on an incredible 23 occasions out of a possible 36. This helped them finish 10 points clear of nearest rivals Silsden. There were that many standout results that it would be impossible to fit them all on just this space, so here is a selection: 

Saturday 18th December 2004—LAIRDS 8-1 Flixton, and Monday 2nd May 2005—Flixton 0-6 LAIRDS. These results were against a team who had a goal difference of just –7 that season, which is not bad for a team that finished 2nd from bottom.

Cheadle Town were a mid-table team that season, not that you would have known that when they played Lairds: Tuesday 1st March 2005—LAIRDS 7-1 Cheadle Town The return was an even better result: Wednesday 20th April 2005—Cheadle Town 1-9 LAIRDS!

Blackpool Mechanics finished just above Cheadle in 10th place, but they must have been wishing that they could never play Lairds again! Tuesday 12th October 2004—LAIRDS 8-1 Blackpool Mechanics Tuesday 30th November 2004—Blackpool Mechanics 0-5 LAIRDS

In Lairds fixture at this level, they drew 1-1 away to Padiham. However, for the fixture at Lairds, there was only one team in the game: Saturday 19th February 2005—LAIRDS 6-0 Padiham. Perhaps it should be pointed out that our opponents finished just two places outside a promotion place.

Lairds won the title with just 3 defeats in the league, 2 of which were against 2nd placed Silsden, and a goal difference of 108.

To Be FRANK Frank Games gives a view from the boardroom A very warm welcome to the Directors, Committee, Players and Officials of todays visitors from Daisy Hill and can I take this opportunity to wish them a successful season. I have written this piece before the Cheshire Cup game against Winsford, and hopefully we have progressed in that match. We had a hard earned win at Ashton Town last time out so a similar result would be welcome today to keep up the pressure on the leaders. It has been a busy start to the season for me - I attended a meeting with the County FA along with other clubs about a proposal to operate a U21 league. At the moment it is too early to say if the club would take up this proposal but it is something that we and other clubs need to look at, as it is a key step towards the development of players who want a first team opportunity, but of course there are several hurdles to overcome and as I say it is early days yet and no doubt further meetings will take place on this matter. Finally enjoy your visit to Cammell Laird 1907 and hopefully you will come again, have a safe journey home.

Frank Frank Games, Chairman

LAIRDS WELCOME…

DAISY HILL THE BASICS

Stadium: New Sirs

Established: 1894 (reformed 1952)

Nickname: The Daisies

giving them the opportunity to bring national competition to the village.

History Situated one and a half miles south of Westhoughton town centre, four miles from Bolton and five miles from the Macron Stadium, home of Bolton Wanderers, the village of Daisy Hill first saw football in season 1894 -95 although it is possible that football was being played in the area for some years prior to that date.

With the National League System requiring clubs to meet new standards for facilities, new dressing rooms and a clubhouse for social activities were erected at New Sirs in 1982. Since then improvement of the club’s facilities has been ongoing and for the 2005-2006 season a floodlighting system was installed which allowed the club to remain in the National League System and return to National and County competitions.

The first known honours for the club came in 1896-97 when the Wigan and District League Championship and the Westhoughton Cup were won without losing a match.

Daisy Hill have lurked in mid-table/bottom half of the table since joining what is now Division One in 87/88, but this season have looked capable of mounting a serious promotion challenge.

The location of the club’s ground in those days is unknown but the present New Sirs ground was used during the First World War period, when the club played in the Leigh and District Senior Sunday School League.

The club also comprises an U18s Youth Team playing in the North West Youth Alliance and a thriving junior section playing in the Bolton, Bury and District Junior Football League.

The club then joined the Westhoughton League and during the 1920s and 1930s won many honours in what was one of the strongest local leagues at the time.

Notable players include: Dick Pollard and Billy Farrimond, both of whom went on to play cricket for Lancashire and England, Alf Watkinson, grandfather of the former Lancashire Cricket Club Captain Mike Watkinson, went on to sign for Blackpool, whilst Mike himself had the odd game for the club. Sam Marsh (Bolton Wanderers and Bury), Alf Gray (Torquay United and Lincoln City), Greg Strong (Motherwell) and Danny Williams (Inverness Caledonian Thistle) all began their careers in senior or junior football at Daisy Hill Football Club.

Little is known of the period leading up to the Second World War, but the club reformed in 1952 and played in the Westhoughton League on the St. James Street Recreation Ground/Cricket Ground until the landowner made an offer to the club to return to New Sirs in 1957. The acquisition of the lease was a major step forward and gave aspiration to move into the Bolton Combination League and develop into one of the most formidable clubs in the area. Dressing rooms were erected at the ground for the start of the 1968/69 season, whilst on the field the club won the Bolton Combination Premier Division on four occasions, the Bolton Combination Cup on four occasions and the Lancashire Amateur Shield twice during the 60s and 70s.

Other notable people/sportspersons born in Westhoughton who may or may not have been associated with the club: Ethel Johnson (Great Britain Olympic Athlete), Joe Bromilow (American Olympic Athlete), Jack Bruton (Blackburn Rovers, Burnley, Bournemouth and England), Joe Clare (Accrington Stanley, Norwich City and Lincoln City). Tommy Woodward (Bolton Wanderers and Middlesborough), Francis Lee (Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Derby County and England) and Robert Shaw (Actor).

In 1978 the Club was accepted into the Lancashire Football Combination and with the advent of the NonLeague football pyramid and the subsequent amalgamation of the Lancashire Football Combination and the Cheshire County League the Club became a founder member of the North West Counties League in 1982,

OPPOSITION IN FOCUS Visiting Wirral today is the Westhoughton-based Daisy Hill in the second meeting between the two sides this season. The first was in November, and was undoubtedly one of the key moments for both: had Daisy Hill won the game, the gap between the two sides would have been cut to just three points. Instead, a superb first half performance secured a 2-1 win for Lairds, Gibiluru and Paul Foy on the scoresheet, Jordan Hussey replying with a late penalty. From then on, the top two pulled away from the chasing pack, whilst the Daisies have won two of their five games since. That said, it’s been a frankly remarkable season so far by Craig Thomas’ outfit. Last season, they had a great start, winning four of their first six games. Those four wins were no mean feat considering they beat Rochdale Town, Atherton LR, Northwich Flixton Villa and Atherton Colls; competitive opposition to say the least! However, they won just two league games from then on (with a winless run from October to mid-April), and only avoided the wooden spoon because NFV had three points deducted, and they avoided defeat on the last day by beating Eccleshall 2-1. Similarly, they had a great start this season, winning ten of their first thirteen games in August and September (in all competitions). In that run, there were three wins over Atherton LR and excellent wins at Barnton and AFC Darwen. The difference this season is that they have been able to sustain that start: after reaching the FA Vase 1st round with victory over Albion Sports, they gave Colls (who then had a 100% record) a real game at Alder House, before defeating Cheadle Town and Eccleshall. Although progress has slowed a little in the last couple of months, they have shown that there is character in the squad. In early November they had a morale-destroying 8-0 defeat at home to local rivals Atherton Collieries in the FA Vase. The Daisies responded with a 2-1 win at Northwich Flixton Villa (which as Lairds and Colls know, is no mean feat) and a comfortable win at Premier Division Bacup and Rossendale Borough in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy. They drew 3-3 at Litherland REMYCA, but lost two on the bounce at home afterwards (a defeat to Ashton Town in the Reusch First Division Cup and in the league to Lairds), but again responded terrifically, with Jordan Hussey scoring a last minute penalty to earn a point at Hanley Town. Daisy Hill were then too good for Wigan Robin Park, beating them 4-0 at New Sirs, but a series of postponements meant that teams such as Barnton began to catch up with them. After exit to Holker Old Boys in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy, they went almost a month without a game. 2015 didn’t start off too well, with AFC Darwen winning 5-0 at New Sirs, followed by a defeat at Cheadle Town. However, they got a much needed win last week, a Craig Haynes double giving them a narrow win over Rochdale Town. So, what’s been the difference this year? In an article for the NWCFL website in September, manager Craig Thomas gave a whole host of reasons as to why this season has been one to remember so far. One of the reasons given was that last season, Daisy Hill lost players that they weren’t able to replace. He also stated that pre-season preparation for this year has been far better: “We had a better pre-season, better quality opposition in the pre-season games like FC United and Salford City, and that has enabled us to attract a better calibre of player.” Another reason is that everyone trains well together, with many Manchester based players having trouble getting to training in the past. Finally, he says that although last year was hurtful, the experience has helped some of the younger players, and there is a nice blend of youth and experience in the squad. One thing’s for sure, if the Daisies continue to accumulate points over the next month or two, they will be wellpositioned for a play-off place come the end of the season. A look at their fixtures shows that they have a lot of winnable games until their tricky looking run in at the end of the season: they visit Seel Park to play Oldham Boro next Saturday; then it’s the short trip to Atherton to play Laburnum Rovers; following that is a home game against Widnes; a trip to a Chadderton side who may have a fixture pile-up due to their FA Vase exploits; a home game against Northwich Flixton Villa and then an away game at struggling Ashton Town. If they can get say four wins out of six, then you’d have to say they are favourites for a top 6 finish, even though they play Colls and Barnton at home, and Holker away in their last four games.

8

Finally, if we look at their squad, we can see why they are doing so well this season. One of the key players is the highly experienced Andrew Buckley, and he has scored 13 goals this season. Manager Craig Thomas clearly rates him highly: “He covers every blade of grass, his workrate is immense. He is a local lad and all the young players look up to him.” Curtis Cummins was top scorer with 14 goals, but recently left for Runcorn Town, whilst Jordan Hussey is another reliable player, with seven goals, including six from the spot. Joel Igenoza recently signed from Cheadle Town, and is a smart player, whilst Sakeel Abdullah scored twice for Premier Division 1874 Northwich prior to his arrival.

Manager The man in charge at New Sirs is Craig Thomas. He is an ex-Daisy Hill player himself, and has provided continuity to the team for the last five seasons. Now, they seem to be seeing the rewards. Despite some tricky times in which their highest placed finish was 11th in 09/10, the Westhoughton-based side look a different outfit this year, and are on course for a play-off place, where they will stand every chance of promotion to the Premier Division. He has a young side, and is getting the best out of them; they are currently 4th in the league. In September, Thomas recently praised his players, saying “The team at the minute have a great attitude and never think they are beaten. We have a real belief and great team spirit, and are developing a winning mentality which should hold us in good stead.” He is assisted by Marc Thomas, Brian Hart and Tommy Burto.

MACCA’S Message Manager Paul McNally shares his thoughts I would like to start today's notes by extending a very warm welcome to all staff, players and representatives of Daisy Hill. This game provides ourselves with an excellent test against another promotion chasing team similar to us, our last encounter was a good contest and we will strive to achieve the same type of result. Tuesday night's Cheshire Senior Cup game showed on our day we are capable of beating any team when we play to our strengths & capabilities. The game was probably our toughest in terms of physicality as most of the Winsford players were over 6ft and built like athletes. The most pleasing aspect of Tuesday’s performance was that even though we were under pressure for most of the 2nd half we still managed to grind out a win which proves we are not a bad team as some people have said * ( shouted by a Winsford player in the tunnel entrance before the game ) *. Anyway we now progress into the next round with a home tie against another Premier Division side so let's try and sustain our momentum, making it a successful season. The midweek game came at a price as we lost Joe Evans halfway through the game with a head injury, he received treatment quickly from Gina (Physio) and went to hospital immediately where it was found he had broken his jaw in 2 places and also fractured his cheekbone. We all at Cammell Laird 1907 wish Joe a speedy recovery and hopefully see him in our blue shirt before the end of the season ! #Win for Joe Evo Thanks,

Macca Paul McNally, First Team Manager

CAMMELL LAIRD 1907 vs Oldham Boro At our home game vs Oldham Boro, we had several well known guests visit Cammell Laird 1907. Here is a summary of a great day for the club Cammell Laird 1907 FC reformed in the summer and after a few months, the committee of the club have decided not to sit back and rely on the on field success of the adult teams. On Saturday 10th January, Frank Field MP and the ward councillors had a meeting with the committee in the morning and later on, the Mayor, Steve Foulkes attended the first team game against Oldham Boro in the North West Counties First Division. During the day, the main focus was on how the club can achieve the FA Chartered standard community status. To achieve this we have a 5 year plan we have introduced to bring youth football at every age group from under 6 to adults, for boys and girls of any ability and a plan to offer disability football across the Wirral area. We also discussed other issues affecting the Birkenhead area including youth football and how the Cammell Laird 1907 FC brand can help local children. The discussions were very successful and opened many doors, the committee will be working hard over the next several months working with council, and local businesses to achieve these goals to secure the future growth of the club and supporting the local community.

LAIRDS LOG HARD-FOUGHT WIN SEES LAIRDS KEEP THE PRESSURE ON THE LEADERS Struggling Ashton Town made Lairds fight to the end for a 2-1 win After two weeks without a game due to the weather, Lairds faced an Ashton Town side who they had already beaten 4-0 in the league this season. Paul McNally made two changes from the side that defeated Oldham Boro at the MBS Stadium— Davies and Cairns out, O’Brien and Holt in. The game was always going to be tough because it felt like the game was being played in the Arctic, and the pitch was not in great condition (as would be expected around this time of the year). Lairds started slowly and weren’t able to find their rhythm. Ashton Town had the ball in the net after seven minutes. Dangerman Sean Robinson, with seventeen goals to his name at the start of play, breached the Lairds offside trap, and suddenly there were two Town players against Langley. Fortunately, when the ball was played to Cusani in the middle, he was adjudged to be offside after coolly putting the ball into the back of the net. Having survived that scare, Town were awarded a controversial free kick. Scott Baker’s delivery was perfect for Branden Gaskell, but his free header went just over the bar. Ashton Town then went even closer to breaking the deadlock, when Baker’s free kick from a similar position looped up and onto the bar. Lairds set about trying to get a foothold in the game. Evans’ shot was blocked for a corner, from which there was head tennis in the penalty area. The pressure was relieved, as Evans’ improvised effort went just over the bar. Unsuccessfully, Lairds tried to play out from the back, but it was O’Brien’s long ball down the left flank that gave Evans a halfchance. With nothing else on, he tried to lob Lowe but it was an easy catch. Then came the moment of controversy. A long ball played Robinson in behind the Lairds defence but 25 yards from goal, Tosny pulled him down as last man. The referee decided it was only worthy of a yellow card, rather than the red that many were expecting. Perhaps the distance between Robinson and the goal

top saw Robinson again breach the Lairds back four, and this time he was able to run at Langley and take it round the keeper to give the home side a goal that they had thoroughly deserved. Speed was withdrawn for Paul Foy, and Lairds knew they were now in a real battle, shown by yellow cards to O’Brien and crucially, a second yellow for Andy McNally, meaning that the hosts were now down to ten men. O’Brien was withdrawn for Steve Ferrigan, before the hosts threw caution to the wind, Danny Norris, Charlie Munroe and Harry Collins all coming on. The closest Town came was a goalmouth scramble which ensued after a curled free-kick. After killing the game in the corner, Lairds were able to hang on for a vital three points. FT: Ashton Town 1-2 Lairds That narrow win keeps the pressure on Colls, who won 3-1 at Eccleshall, and every point counts from now until the end of the season in our title pursuit. Ashton Town were very unlucky, but remain third from bottom.

saved Tosny. Baker’s effort was an easy save from the resulting free-kick. After a late tackle on O’Brien, Andy McNally was the first Ashton player in the book, but Ashton continued to be the better side. A corner from the right was knocked down by Paul Keenan and a goalmouth scramble followed. Couch cleared as far as Scott Baker, and 25 yards from goal, his effort hit the bar and went over Langley’s goal. Lairds hadn’t really been in the game, yet it was still they who were able to break the deadlock. Foy’s corner reached Evans at the far post, and it was the latter who made the goal. Weaving in and out of three defenders, he managed to find Tosny, who had the simplest of tap ins into the net for his first goal of the season. Town will feel aggrieved, beAshton Town deserve full credit for their cause they felt that Tosny shouldn't have been on the pitch, but Lairds performance, because they pushed had a lead going into the break. RESERVES ROUND-UP RECENT GAMES On 10th January, the Reserves game at Ashville was postponed. The week after, the Reserves were made to fight all the way by visitors Upton AA before claiming a vital 1-0 success. In the 2nd half Lairds twice had shots cleared off the line and also missed a spot kick. The winning goal arrived with 14 minutes remaining when Upton keeper Adam Bedford saw his clearance hit the oncoming Danny Dixon and balloon into the net. Last Saturday, Lairds kept the pressure on South Liverpool with a 3-0 win over Blacon Youth Club, Kevin Fitzsimmons and Josh Duress amongst the goals.

BURKE’S Banter The editor provides his views Welcome to the MBS Stadium for today’s game against Daisy Hill. In particular, we welcome the directors, players, staff and supporters who have made the journey from Greater Manchester. We played our first home game for what seems an eternity (for me anyway!) on Tuesday in the Cheshire Senior Cup against Winsford United, and what an excellent tie it was. The game was played at an incredibly fast pace and it had everything: goals, two attacking teams, and perhaps what the game will be remembered for—controversy. I still don’t know why the referee decided to overrule his linesman for Winsford’s first goal, especially because all 22 players stopped—I have to say I thought the linesman’s arm was going to fall off he had his flag up that long! However, I guess these things balance themselves out, and apparently our second goal didn’t quite cross the line, but was given. Performance-wise, for long periods it was very good against a side from the NWCFL Premier Division, and hopefully that was the start of a run in that cup (we have drawn Congleton Town at home in the quarter-finals). Last time out in NWCFL action, we faced an Ashton Town side desperate and determined to put a poor run of form behind them, and that showed in their display: they battled for every ball, bombarded our defence on several occasions and it took two moments of brilliance to ensure a 2-1 win. For the first goal, Joe Evans did brilliantly to set up Paul Tosny for his first 1907 goal, and one that I’m sure you’ll agree he deserves for the way he has stepped into the centre-back position. The second goal was scored by Adam Hughes, who is making headlines in NWCFL football for all the right reasons; his was a fantastic 20 yard finish on a tricky pitch. Ashton Town did get a goal back, but we stood firm, and from then on I don’t think they had a real chance to equalise. The week before that, we had our away game with AFC Darwen postponed, which should have come as no surprise, and had the game gone ahead, it would have been like playing in Siberia (that line comes from the Northampton Town PA man, who when I visited in 5 inches of snow, said that the 50-50 draw prize was a holiday to Siberia)! Just me getting side-tracked as usual! We are entertaining Daisy Hill this afternoon, and I am looking forward to a clash between two of the division’s best teams. Earlier in the season, goals from Joey Gib and Paul Foy saw us win 2-1, which helped us to really cement our top two place. However, they got a much needed win last Saturday, and to be 4th with games in hand on 3rd placed Barnton shows what a serious test they will pose; their attack looks a strong one too, and Andrew Buckley has scored 13 goals. Though of course, I hope that he will not add to that tally today! Next week, we face Eccleshall away, though unfortunately I won’t be able to attend. As an Evertonian, I have a ticket for the Merseyside Derby at Goodison, but the way things are going I would rather be at Pershall Park! Finally, I’ve been asked to do the preview for the division for the NWCFL website again this week—it will be live on Friday, and I hope I can build on my first attempt a few weeks back. I’ve just heard of the extent of Joe Evans’ injury, and so I’d like to wish him a speedy recovery. I feel obliged to join Macca in saying: #Win for Joe Evo Thank you for your support this afternoon, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home!
