A history of Cammell Laird 1907 FC Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers, finishing 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season (1907/08). In the early years the club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy (the Shipley Cup) in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The club had their most successful period during the 1970's and 80's winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/5 saw the club reach the FA Vase quarter final before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first club to win the championship of the second and first divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year at that first division triumph, the club reached the FA Vase semi final (losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town) and two years later, the club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the club finished bottom of the Evo Stik North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play off final against Trafford. Last season saw the club finish 11th but the decision was taken by the club to resign from the Evo Stik NPL due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new club was formed on 28th May 2014.
LAIRDS in this competition Tonight, Cammell Laird 1907 will play their first game in the Cheshire Senior Cup since reforming in the summer of 2014. Cammell Laird FC had pleasing success in this competition. In 2005/06, Lairds came up against tonight’s opponents Winsford United in the Preliminary Round in a run to the semi-finals, where they were narrowly beaten by Witton Albion. Lairds finest hour in the competition came in 2006/07. After good wins at home to Hyde United and away to Warrington Town and Chester City, Lairds found themselves in a final against Northwich Victoria. With the chance to become the first team from the Wirral to win the cup for over 50 years, Lairds didn’t pass up the opportunity at Witton Albion’s ground, as they won 3-1 to bring the trophy back to Merseyside. After another semi-final appearance in 07/08, Lairds were knocked out at the first round stage by Warrington Town the following year, but there was another semi-final appearance in 09/10, before Stockport Sports won 4-2 to gain their place in the final at Lairds’ expense. From 10/11 to 12/13, there were three successive exits at the first time of asking, but Lairds won their first round tie at Congleton Town last season on penalties. Their last game was a 1-0 defeat at 1874 Northwich, but hopefully, we will be able to go further this season to get as close as possible to winning this prestigious trophy.

LAIRDS WELCOME… WINSFORD UNITED THE BASICS
Stadium: The Barton Stadium
Established: 1883
Nickname: The Blues
History Winsford United have a long and proud history, forming way back in 1883. In those early days, the club was called Over Wanderers. After a few seasons, the club changed to its present name and present ground - Barton Stadium - although it was called Great Western Playing Field at the outset. The club brought on many good players during this period and after losing several players to Football League clubs, they experienced a somewhat unsuccessful spell that resulted in the club folding. United reformed in 1913 but it was short lived as World War One broke out. After the cessation of hostilities, United regrouped under Mr R G Barton (hence Barton Stadium) and the club became a founder member of the Cheshire League, winning the Championship in its second season. That was to be one of the few successes as the Blues struggled to survive both on and off the field. During the War, Barton Stadium was almost stripped bare to aid the war effort. After the war, United became a Limited company and the 1950’s saw the glory days on Non-League football when crowds of over 3000 were the norm. In 1959 Winsford won the Cheshire Senior Cup against Ellesmere Port Town in front of a 12,000 crowd at Gresty Road. Under John Williams in the 1970’s they had the most successful period in their history winning the Cheshire League and the Challenge Cup on several occasions. In 1974 they reached the Senior Cup final again, this time against the then-mighty Macclesfield Town. The final was an epic with three replays and the Silkmen only clinching it after extra time in the fourth match. All the ties were played in front of crowds of over 3,500. The Blues won the Cheshire Senior Cup again in 1980 with a 41 victory over local rivals Witton Albion. The goalkeeper in that final was Neville Southall who was then was sold to Bury for £6,000. A sell on clause later netted United a club record figure of around £30,000 when he moved to Goodison Park. After becoming founder members of the NWCFL in 1982, The Blues were invited to join the newly formed NPL First Division but they never really set the place on fire, seventh place being the best achieved. Season 1992/93 will go down in United’s folklore as ‘Macca’s’ men won an astonishing five trophies the NPL Challenge Cup, NPL President’s Cup, Cheshire Senior Cup, Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup and NPL Runners Up Cup. The Blues finished second to Southport and their points total is a record for the most points accrued without winning the title. Sadly the team then broke up in the summer of 1993. After a return to the NWCFL in 01/02, they were relegated to Division Two in 02/03. Chris Willcock and John Flanagan took over the team and the Blues led the table from early season 06/07 right up to the end when they were promoted to Division One as champions. Surprisingly Chris and John left at the end of the season and moved to Woodley Sports, taking the best players with them.
5
After a period lacking continuity, Chris Willcock and Assistant Ian Street returned and so did the crowds. However, there was a shock at the beginning of February however and more than a little touch of déjà vu when Willcock announced he was once again leaving to take charge at Woodley Sports, leaving Ian Street in charge. Ian Street remained in charge for the 2011-2012 season and Kevin Bircumshaw was appointed as his Assistant. The team made a great start to the season, spending several weeks at or near the top of the table and promotion looked a distinct possibility. However a series of suspensions and injuries saw the team gain just two points from twenty four in the weeks leading up to Christmas . Their form was recovered in the New Year but the gap had become too great and Winsford ended the season in seventh place. The summer break saw Ian Street take a post closer to home and he accepted the job of Manager at Ashton Athletic. The Manager’s position was advertised and the board had no hesitation in appointing former Flixton Manager Lloyd Morrison. There was also a tremendous boost at the start of the 2012/2013 season when Winsford Town Council became the club’s main sponsor, a relationship that promises to last for many years. The season was one of the most successful for years with the club finishing 5th in the league and defeating Northwich Victoria in the final of the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup. The summer of 2013 saw great changes taking place at the stadium with the news that 1874 Northwich were to share the ground and their enthusiastic supporters helped to bring the ground up to a high standard. However, with everything in place for a serious assault on the league title and over £20,000 spent on improving the facilities and pitch, the club was rocked when two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to Mossley AFC as Joint Manager and not only that, he expected to take sixteen registered players with him. This led to an acrimonious situation between the two clubs with Mossley unable to register the players and Winsford refusing to allow their dual registration. Eventually an agreement was reached. The board acted quickly to appoint Eddy Haslam as Manager with Rob Byrne as his Assistant. With only a couple of weeks to put a team together Eddy worked hard to bring in a squad of quality players to begin the campaign. The early results were remarkable considering the lack of pre-season preparation and runs in the FA Cup and FA Vase gave the club a boost. However, the team had been struggling in the league and after some poor results the manager left by mutual consent. Assistant Manager Rob Byrne and Coach Kevin Bircumshaw said they wanted to give it a go and so they were put in charge on a match by match agreement. Following three important victories they were given the post on a permanent basis. The Management team was retained for the following season and once again there is an air of optimism at the Barton Stadium.
All fixtures are subject to change.

To Be FRANK Frank Games gives a view from the boardroom A very warm welcome to the Directors, Committee, Players and Officials of today’s visitors from Winsford United and can I take this opportunity to wish them a successful season. This is our final chance of cup silverware this season, so let's hope we can go all the way for once as too many of our cup runs seem to run out of steam early. Tonight game will however be a tough game but let’s hope we can pull through. The new year has started well and from a league point of view we are still in the hunt for the title. The Reserves are also in the hunt for silverware sitting second in the league they entertain Blacon this weekend. Also going well is our Youth team who are progressing well in the Wallasey Sunday league but are more than worth a look as they are playing well. Finally enjoy your visit to Cammell Laird 1907 and hopefully you will come again, have a safe journey home. Best Wishes
Frank Frank Games, Chairman

MACCA’S Message Manager Paul McNally shares his thoughts I would like to start tonight's notes by extending a very warm welcome to all staff, players and representatives of Winsford United for this Cheshire Senior Cup tie. This game provides ourselves with an excellent test against a team from a higher division and hopefully we can rise to the occasion as we have shown in previous games of similar standing. The Cheshire Senior Cup is one that we would love to progress further in as potentially there could be some big games against professional teams and non league sides. In recent years we have not performed to the standard required of a Cammell Laird 1907 team in this cup so tonight starting with a strong team/squad we can hopefully rectify this and enter the next round. Spirits are still high in the squad and in recent weeks we have been given a massive boost with the return to the squad of Steven Ferrigan from a hernia injury, everyone who follows us realises what a great defensive player he is and his return can only make us stronger as a team! Thanks,

BURKE’S Banter Welcome to the MBS Stadium for tonight’s game against Winsford United. In particular, we welcome the directors, players, staff and supporters who have made the journey from Cheshire. Tonight’s issue is obviously much shorter than our regular edition, so thanks for buying the programme and I hope that the content is as good as the league edition. However, for any Winsford United supporters/groundhoppers visiting tonight, rest assured that this issue does not reflect most of our issues! Last week, although I was unable to attend the game, I heard about the comfortable nature of our 5-2 win over Oldham Boro. It was great that Craig Cairns got a hat trick after a ‘lengthy’ spell of two games without a goal, and also Danny Dixon, who has done really well with the Reserves this season, came off the bench to score the 5th goal. That win means that we still have a one point advantage over Atherton Collieries and keep the pressure on them to win their games in hand. Off the pitch, it was great to hear that the committee met Frank Field MP and the ward councillors, the main focus being on how we can achieve the FA Chartered Standard Community Status. Hopefully this will help the club to develop even further than we have in a short space of time. Hopefully, we will have a similar outcome tonight! It will be our third meeting against NWCFL Premier Division opposition this season, and clearly it’s not going to be easy. At the time of going to press, United’s last game saw them win 1-0 in an ‘away’ game to promotion chasing 1874 Northwich, who are playing their home games at Winsford’s Barton Stadium. They have had a solid season so far, comfortably above the relegation zone and with enough games in hand to kick on from their 15th placed position. The Cheshire Senior Cup is the only cup competition we are still competing in and we won the cup in 2006/07. It’s a great trophy to be involved in, especially with so many high-profile teams taking part and it provides a chance for the squad to show their quality. I hope that our game is not affected tonight by the weather. I am writing these notes before Saturday’s game at AFC Darwen, and looking at the weather, I’m not 100% sure that the game will be taking place. The weather forecast says that there will be heavy snow all day Saturday, which might result in a highly exciting football match, or leave us with a wasted journey up the M6, or for some of us perhaps even detouring to another match in the region... I noticed that Colls are at home so I could go on a ‘scouting mission’, or I may make a venture to Burnley’s game at home to Crystal Palace. Of course, if all else fails, there is the Boundary Mill Stores at Colne! All things to fantasise about. We thank you for your support this evening, so enjoy the game and have a safe journey home,
Patrick Patrick Burke, Programme Editor
