A history of Cammell Laird 1907 FC Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers, finishing 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season (1907/08). In the early years the club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy (the Shipley Cup) in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The club had their most successful period during the 1970's and 80's winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/5 saw the club reach the FA Vase quarter final before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first club to win the championship of the Second and First Divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year as that First Division triumph, the club reached the FA Vase semi final (losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town) and two years later, the club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the club finished bottom of the Evo Stik North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play off final against Trafford. Last season saw the club finish 11th but the decision was taken by the club to resign from the Evo Stik NPL due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new club was formed on 28th May 2014.
LAIRDS in this competition When Lairds decided to drop down to the North West Counties Football League Division One in the summer, they did so knowing that they would be playing at this level for only the second time in their history. The last time was in 2004/05 and it was probably the most successful season in the club’s history, so let’s hope for a repeat this season! After playing in the West Cheshire League since 1948-49 no one could have predicted how successful that season would be. Lairds comfortably won the title, scoring 142 league goals. That remains a record for this division (which only Nelson last season have come close to breaking). At the time it was a record for the NWCFL as a whole, and only FC United of Manchester’s tally of 157 goals in the Premier Division of 06/07 have beaten that since. During 04/05 Lairds scored 4 or more goals in a game on an incredible 23 occasions out of a possible 36. This helped them finish 10 points clear of nearest rivals Silsden. There were that many standout results that it would be impossible to fit them all on just this space, so here is a selection:
Saturday 18th December 2004—LAIRDS 8-1 Flixton, and Monday 2nd May 2005—Flixton 0-6 LAIRDS. These results were against a team who had a goal difference of just –7 that season, which is not bad for a team that finished 2nd from bottom.
Cheadle Town were a mid-table team that season, not that you would have known that when they played Lairds: Tuesday 1st March 2005—LAIRDS 7-1 Cheadle Town The return was an even better result: Wednesday 20th April 2005—Cheadle Town 1-9 LAIRDS.
Blackpool Mechanics finished just above Cheadle in 10th place, but they must have been wishing that they could never play Lairds again! Tuesday 12th October 2004—LAIRDS 8-1 Blackpool Mechanics Tuesday 30th November 2004—Blackpool Mechanics 0-5 LAIRDS
In Lairds first fixture at this level, they drew 1-1 away to Padiham. However, for the fixture at Lairds, there was only one team in the game: Saturday 19th February 2005—LAIRDS 6-0 Padiham. Perhaps it should be pointed out that our opponents finished just two places outside a promotion place.
Lairds won the title with just 3 defeats in the league, 2 of which were against 2nd placed Silsden, and a goal difference of 108.

To Be FRANK Frank Games gives a view from the boardroom A very warm welcome to the Directors, Committee, Players and Officials of Wigan RP and can I take this opportunity to wish them a successful season. It has been a difficult season for our visitors but as always that does not mean it will be an easy game today, and we will need to continue our good form of recent weeks if we are to take all the points today. As with any club at this level we are always seeking suitable volunteers to help out with some of the administration attached to running the club. If you have some time and possess some basic admin and financial skills then please contact the Secretary or one of the Club Committee during today's game. The Hotpot Supper is on Thursday 2nd April (it’s Good Friday the next day so a day off for most of us) - our guests will be former Everton and Liverpool legend David Johnson and top comedian Willie Miller. Tickets available from the Social Club at £25. Finally Saturday 2nd May: we will host our presentation night in the social club. Finally enjoy your visit to Cammell Laird 1907 and hopefully you will come again, have a safe journey home.

LAIRDS WELCOME…
WIGAN ROBIN PARK THE BASICS
Stadium: Robin Park Arena
Established: 2005
Nickname: The Robins
History Wigan Robin Park Football Club was founded in 2005 and started playing in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester Football League, a feeder league for the North West Counties. All the players were local lads and in the first season, they made good progress reaching the Lancashire Shield Quarter Finals (when they lost on penalties) and finishing 7th in the table. The inaugural season’s achievements continued into the start of the 2006/07 season with a number of new players joining the club. The Robins showed consistency in cup competitions as the team progressed to the semi-final stage losing narrowly to Winstanley St Aidens. From that point the team then went on a remarkable league run which saw them go all the way to the end of the season undefeated. This helped them to achieve promotion to the Manchester Premier Division. Once the team became accustomed to the speed of the Premier Division, the team turned the corner and went on an excellent run which saw them lose just once in 24 games in all competitions, and Wigan Robin Park claimed the Premier League title at their first attempt. The next hurdle was to pass the high standards expected to compete at step 6 in the football league pyramid, and then Wigan Robin Park were accepted into the North West Counties First Division. In the inaugural season in the NWCFL good progress was made, winning 7 drawing 3 and losing 2 of their first 12 fixtures. The highlight was the defeat of title contenders AFC Liverpool in front of the highest home crowd of 603 at Valerie Park. The team stayed in the top five most of the season including top spot on various occasions, eventually finishing in fifth position. Season 2009/10 proved to be a learning curve as the Robins finished the season in twelfth place. Although rocked by the departure of some senior players to clubs further up the pyramid pre-season, the club managed to bring in some quality young players who started the season well. However a succession of injuries that decimated the squad saw the team slip to mid-table during the second half of the season. In 2010/11 the team started the season like a house on fire and were rewarded with a place towards the top of the table in the run up to Christmas. Unfortunately they were
unable to continue this form and finished the season in eighth place. Prior to the 2011/12 season Wigan Robin Park made important changes behind the scenes. Steve Halliwell, exchairman of Ashton Athletic took over the same role, allowing manager John Neafcy to concentrate on the playing side of the club. The club also promoted club stalwart Jay Foulds to assistant manager working alongside John, Craig Barton, Darren Mullen and Bob Howard. With senior players returning to the club, others being recruited and a very strong Reserve team, the Robins secured unprecedented success in 2011/12. The first team, managed by John Neafcy, won the First Division Championship while the Reserve team won the Reserve Division. Meanwhile a combined side managed by Assistant First Team Manager Jay Foulds and Reserve Team boss Ian Granite lifted the prestigious Wigan Cup, beating local rivals Ashton Athletic in the final. In other cup competitions, the club were runners up in the First Division Trophy after an exciting final that went to extra time versus title rivals Norton United, while Evo Stik Northern Premier League giants Chorley defeated the Robins in the semi-final of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy before a large crowd at the County Ground, Leyland. The momentous 2011/12 season was rounded off when the club picked up the Division One programme of the year at the NWCFL’s annual dinner. During the close season, Ian Granite’s success as Reserve Team Manager was duly noted and he moved onto St Helens Town as First Team Manager. This saw the club bringing in Jez Neild from Ashton Town as Reserve Team Manager, with club stalwart Paul Vermiglio assisting. The Club targeted the 2012/13 season as one of consolidation as they plied their trade for the first time in the NWCFL Premier Division, the highest level at which the club has competed in during their short history, and finished a creditable 12th position. Meanwhile the committee continue to build the club, increasing attendances, developing the club’s profile in the town, introducing a youth development scheme whilst continuing to enjoy their football in the North West Counties League. In New Year 2014, chairman Steve Halliwell stepped down and Daryl Picton was installed as his replacement. Unfortunately, this could not prevent the Robins being relegated back to Division One in 2013/14, but this ambitious club continues to move forward and has achieved so much in such a short time.

OPPOSITION IN FOCUS This is Wigan Robin Park’s seventh season in the NWCFL, and last season was their second in the Premier Division. Sadly, they suffered from what is widely known as ‘second-season syndrome’, as despite a mid-table finish in 2012/13, the Robins finished bottom of the table and were relegated to the First Division. It was a case of what might have been, with 10 of their 27 league defeats by the odd goal. Manager John Neafcy never doubted the team spirit, and their battling qualities, and with a little more luck, it could have been enough to preserve their Premier Division status. However, it wasn’t and the Robins regrouped and had a good pre-season against opposition including Morecambe, Colwyn Bay and Salford City. All looked set for a push for immediate promotion back to the Premier Division, with the Robins already having experience of winning this division in 2011/12. Indeed, their season started in that vein. On opening day, they defeated Widnes 2-1 at the Robin Park Arena thanks to goals from Joseph Newbold and Daniel Davies, and had a half-time lead at Atherton Collieries thanks to Graeme Begley, but in the end, the score line read 51, a result which by all accounts flattered the home side. Unfortunately, the run that followed saw a familiar story for the Robins: they lost four of their next six league games by the odd goal, though did gain an impressive win at Hanley Town and a creditable point at Rochdale Town. Striker Andrew Simm also scored six goals in that run—a ratio of one goal per game. Then came the meeting between Wigan Robin Park and Cammell Laird 1907 at the Arena. In that game, the Robins certainly showed enough to suggest they are a decent side. They created some good chances on the night, but fortunately from a Lairds point of view, the defence was able to deal with anything the Robins threw at them. Lairds simply got their goals at the right times. The Robins bounced back with a 1-0 win over Irlam on the Saturday, thanks to an Andrew Simm penalty, and despite exits in three cup competitions, they showed great character to bounce back and record back-to-back league wins courtesy of triumph over Oldham Boro. The inconsistent nature of the start to their season was highlighted in their next two results. At the time, Litherland REMYCA were struggling in the league, but in their first game following the appointment of Phil Stafford, REMY were able to record a 4-0 win over the Robins. Think you can’t bounce back from that? Well, Wigan certainly did, recording a fine 4-1 victory at play-off contenders Atherton LR in their next outing, despite being behind at half-time. Connor Murphy, a Jake Patton double and a goal from ex-Lairds man Paul Cliff eased them to three points. After showing great character and quality in that run, it is a complete mystery as to why the Robins went on such a bad run, with eleven straight defeats from 25th October. It was a 5-0 defeat at home to Northwich Flixton Villa that started the bad run of form (the key word is ‘form’, because as the old cliché goes: form is temporary, class is permanent). Visiting a strong AFC Darwen side in their next outing was hardly an ideal fixture, and Darwen showed what a good side they are in a 7-2 win. It’s also not easy to visit Irlam, who have only lost twice on their own turf this season. The Robins joined a host of teams to lose there after a 4-1 defeat. Their bad luck continued—Atherton Collieries are definitely not a team you want to be playing when you need a result! After defeats to Chadderton, Cheadle Town, Holker Old Boys, Daisy Hill, Barnton and Cheadle again, it must have seemed like the world was against Robin Park, and that every single mistake was being punished. They needed an improved performance to boost the morale in the squad, and they got it, being extremely unlucky to lose 1-0 at home to Eccleshall. The Robins created plenty of good chances, but the deep defending by their Staffordshire opponents proved too tough to break down. Last Saturday, they faced a daunting prospect, visiting in form Holker Old Boys. Facing difficult opposition and with a long journey to contend with, Wigan were very unfancied
8
but then we saw what makes football great—any result is possible. James Banawich gave the Robins the lead, and despite a Michael Rushton penalty pegging them back, Jordan Dainty gave Robin Park a half-time lead. Rushton equalised again early in the second half, but Wigan stood firm and were able to take a very respectable point back to Greater Manchester. Finally, a look at the squad, and it certainly has the ability to climb the table, helped by several new recruits recently. In Phil Howard, they have one of the most prolific strikers in recent times in this division—he scored 43 goals in RP’s title winning campaign of 2011/12. James Banawich has also impressed this season, whilst recent additions like Fabrice Bembo-Leta and Richard Moran have all helped to strengthen the squad. By Patrick Burke

Manager In charge at the Robin Park Arena is the vastly experienced John Neafcy. He is a real Wigan Robin Park stalwart, having taken the role as Chairman as well as Manager in the past. He led the Robins to the First Division title in 2011/12, and his experience could be invaluable to the side. He is assisted by Bob Howard.

MACCA’S Message Manager Paul McNally shares his thoughts Good afternoon everybody and welcome to the MBS Stadium for our league clash against Wigan Robin Park. Throughout this season our ambitions have been clear and our performances have been focused to help achieve the ultimate goal— Promotion and a League title. Saturday’s win against Cheadle was an important one for us. We controlled the play for much of the game, but we had to show a lot of heart and determination to make sure of the win. The ambition of the team was clear to see in the nature of the second goal, our centre back Tom Reilly carrying the ball out from a defending corner and providing Paul Foy with the assist for a wonderful counter attacking goal. We had to work hard and keep pushing but in the end, we achieved an important victory which took us four points clear at the top of the table. Today is another day to help us get one step closer to our goal. We face another difficult opponent and we have to be ready to give everything to win the game and maintain our advantage at the top. Our game at Wigan Robin Park earlier this season was one of our better team performances at that time and we came away with 3-0 victory. However that game will have no influence on today's game and we will need to be focused on the task in hand. We continue to go step by step, match by match – that will not change, because we know how tough this league is and how strong the competition is. There are 10 league games remaining and every one demands our complete concentration.... Enjoy the game and let's keep the train rolling on to our destination ! #ChooChoo,
Thanks
Macca Paul McNally, First Team Manager

LAIRDS LOG THREE GOALS, THREE POINTS The game was not a classic, but Lairds came out on top in a 3-0 win By Patrick Burke Injury-hit Lairds made four changes from the side that battled bravely but were beaten in extra-time by Congleton Town on the Tuesday. Tom Hartley and Tom Owens both made full debuts, whilst Gibiluru and Henders returned; Ferrigan, Josh Hughes, Cairns and Dixon all dropped out. The home side were playing with the very strong wind, and the first chance went their way as a corner resulted in a scramble. Unfortunately Stephen Piggott was able to save from Couch at the far post. Lairds continued to make all the early pressure, but three corners were all dealt with by Town. Henders was also unlucky to see a long range effort go just wide. However, Cheadle Town were soon able to get into the game. Firstly, Luke Hincks saw a decent effort fly just over, then Thabiso Magida went on a fantastic run as he cut in from the left. After beating three defenders with ease, perhaps too easily from a Lairds perspective, Magida scooped the ball over the bar. His frustration was clear to see, having done all the hard part but fluffing his lines. The dangerman in the Cheadle team was Nathan Neequaye, who had scored 19 goals this season at the start of play, and he broke into the box but saw his effort swerve wide. Neequaye then had a huge chance to make Town’s superiority pay. A long ball was played for him to run onto, and he had the pace to beat Tom Reilly. Fortunately, he fired wide. Lairds needed some more creativity and to improve their passing. Firstly, Holt stood up a cross that Owens headed wide, then Hartley played a smart ball down the line, from which Hughes saw an effort well saved, Henders unable to force home the rebound. Tom Reilly was fortunate that his missed interception didn’t lead to a Cheadle chance, but Lairds continued to
be in the ascendancy: Hughes’ long range effort was again kept out by Piggott, before Henders’ header was goalbound but sadly blocked. Lairds went the closest of either team on the stroke of half-time. Firstly, Henders brought down a cross and smashed the crossbar before Joe Holt took a touch, and his brilliant overhead kick hit the post and was cleared for a corner—a case of ’how did that not go in?!’ Couch’s header from the corner was just over, and the half-time whistle went with the sides level. HT: Lairds 0-0 Cheadle Town Thankfully, the wind had died down for the second half, so Town were unable to use that to their advantage. Lairds had the first chance, as Hughes curled a free-kick on the edge of the box around the wall and on target— unfortunately Piggott saved well. Paul Foy then had his chance to make an impact, brought on for Tom Owens; for Town, Niall Cannon was replaced by Christopher Rathburn. Magida was impressive in the first-half for Cheadle, and he had their first chance of the half, Langley keeping out his effort at the far post. The game was largely a dull affair up until this point, but as the hailstones started, it seemed to give Lairds the extra impetus required! Indeed, it didn’t take long for Jamie Henders, who had faded a little in the second half, to score with a real poacher’s effort—exactly what you want your striker to do!
15
Cheadle responded quickly, with an effort going just wide before James Horan, who scored twice in the reverse fixture in November, was brought on to make a difference. Unusually for him, Langley’s goal kick was poor, but perhaps Ashley Smallwood didn’t realise how much time he had, and his effort was easily saved. However, it was clear that Town were tiring, and Lairds began to use their goal advantage, and their opponents fatigue, to stretch the well organised Cheadle defence. Firstly, Piggott made a smart stop from Paul Foy when he was in oneon-one, and the goalkeeper then showed his great agility and reactions to brilliantly tip over Speedie’s goal bound effort from 25 yards. Couch then saw his free header fly over the bar. Town brought on Westmerland for Lindon to try and rescue a point, before James Thomas being brought on for Joe Holt ate up a bit of time for Lairds. After some late pressure, resulting in real danger from a corner, Tom Reilly was the coolest man in the ground to lead the breakaway from the corner. The centre back and Foy had a 2 on 1 vs the defender, and after finding Foy, the striker made no mistake. 2-0 up in the last minute of normal time, Lairds might have been forgiven for ‘sitting back’, but with the last kick of the game, Henders calmly put the icing on the cake to secure a 3-0 win. FT: Lairds 3-0 Cheadle Town A late flurry of goals saw Lairds open up a four point cushion at the top, keeping the pressure on Colls, whilst doing their goal difference no harm. The scoreline flattered Lairds a little, and Town know if they can replicate that performance, they will be in the mix for the play-offs come the end of the season.
It was a disappointing scoreline for Cheadle as it didn't reflect the full story of the game. Ultimately Cammell Laird were more clinical in front of goal on this occasion, whilst Cheadle must learn to be more ruthless ‌ to compete against the leading sides in this League.
Not a contender for game of the season, but Lairds beat a good Cheadle Town side, and three points is the most important thing to keep the pressure on Colls in the title race. Hartley and Owens had excellent full debuts, whilst Paul Foy staked a claim for a starting place, and the competition for places can only be a good thing.

AROUND THE GROUNDS A couple of stories from around the NWCFL. Ashton Town Ashton Town have organised a reunion evening to celebrate the club's 62 year history. The event will be held at the club on the evening of Saturday 11th April, between 7pm and midnight, and all former players, managers and committee members are invited to attend. The club's Vice-Chairman Jimmy Cahill came up with the reunion idea, and asked former player Pat Dooney to assist in organising the event. Entry is free, and there will be displays of memorabilia from throughout the club's history, from its early days as Makerfield Mill FC through to the present day. Former players and committee members are also being encouraged to dig out any photos or items that may be of interest and bring them down on the evening, to assist present day club officials in compiling a comprehensive story of the club's history. Town Chairman Mark Hayes said: "It's a great opportunity to put together the missing years of history, if possible. Since coming to the club, I have always wanted to do another history book, and it should be a great night". The Reusch First Division Cup The draw for the semi final of the Reusch Cup was made last Saturday at half-time of our game at Cheadle Town. The draw was made by our Chairman Frank Games and Cheadle Chairman Chris Davies alongside League Secretary John Deal (pictured right). The draw is as follows: Atherton Collieries v Northwich Flixton Villa or Litherland REMYCA AFC Darwen or Hanley Town v Ashton Town or Oldham Boro Ties to be played over one leg on a date to be announced.

BURKE’S Banter The editor provides his views Welcome to the MBS Stadium for today’s game against Wigan Robin Park. In particular, we welcome the directors, players, staff and supporters who have made the journey from Greater Manchester. This is the second Saturday in a row that we have had a home game, meaning that we only have two more games here remaining—incredible when I can remember finishing off the first programme vs Atherton Collieries like it was yesterday! Last Saturday’s game against Cheadle Town was not a classic, and to be fair I think a 3-0 win was slightly flattering for us. It was a game that we started well, couldn’t get the goal, and then Town squandered several good chances to take the lead. After an hour, I thought the game would be 0-0 or 1-0 either way, but soon after that Jamie Henders scored with a poacher’s finish. I missed the goal, because the hailstone had just started and I was retreating to find cover! The hail stopped and Paul Foy secured the win on the counter-attack, then Jamie got his second with pretty much the last kick of the game. All in all, it was good win against a good side, and we are at the stage where the only thing that matters is the three points to force Colls to sustain their form. Today we welcome a Wigan Robin Park side who ended their run of eleven straight defeats last Saturday, gaining an excellent 2-2 draw at Holker Old Boys; how typical that they would end it just before we play them and come into the game on a high! They may be 18th in the league, but they are clearly a better side than that suggests, and have taken four points from away games at Holker and Hanley this season. Therefore, we will have to be at our best, because as we all know, anyone can beat anyone in football. Our fixture at Eccleshall has been rearranged for Wednesday 22nd April 2015. Wouldn’t you just know that the second furthest away fixture for us would be put on a Wednesday night, and even worse, not in school holidays, leaving me with some indecision as to whether I will be able to make the venture south! But from my perspective, the home games have worked out more fortuitously; I have only one more programme to do this season, and I’ll have the whole of Easter to do that, so it really couldn’t have worked out any better alongside my GCSEs! Next week, we go to Rochdale Town, but at the moment it’s on the fence as to whether or not I’m going! My Scottish team Queen of the South are in the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup, so we don’t know whether to head up there with some friends, or take the trip to north-east Manchester to watch the mighty Lairds—let me know if you have any thoughts as to what I should do! Finally, if you want to follow me on twitter, I am: @pburke_CL1907. We thank you for your support this afternoon, enjoy the game and have a safe journey home!
