A history of Cammell Laird 1907 FC Cammell Laird 1907 FC can trace its history back to 1899 when a team from the Upper Boilers Shop of Laird Bros played in Birkenhead Park, before turning to the rugby code. It was not until June 1907 that the Cammell Laird Institute AFC was established, with its first fixture taking place on 2nd September 1907 against Tranmere Rovers, finishing 9th in the West Cheshire League in their inaugural season (1907/08). In the early years the club played at a number of grounds and won their first trophy (the Shipley Cup) in April 1921, before in the summer of 1922 they moved to St Peters Road (which still remains their current home) as Kirklands FC. They disbanded in 1939 but reformed in 1946. The club had their most successful period during the 1970's and 80's winning the West Cheshire League on a regular basis. 1994/5 saw the club reach the FA Vase quarter final before losing to Arlesey Town. The early part of the new millennium saw the club reach new heights. They started the rise through the pyramid, making history by becoming the first club to win the championship of the Second and First Divisions of the North West Counties League, which they achieved in 2004/05 and then 2005/06. In the same year as that First Division triumph, the club reached the FA Vase semi final (losing to eventual winners Nantwich Town) and two years later, the club gained promotion to the Unibond Premier League. However, they were relegated after just one season due to ground grading. Having fought relegation battles successfully, the club finished bottom of the Evo Stik North in 2011/12, but were reprieved, and bounced back the following season by finishing league runners up before losing on penalties in the play off final against Trafford. Last season saw the club finish 11th but the decision was taken by the club to resign from the Evo Stik NPL due to ownership issues and form a new club: Cammell Laird 1907 FC. The new club was formed on 28th May 2014.

LAIRDS in this competition When Lairds decided to drop down to the North West Counties Football League Division One in the summer, they did so knowing that they would be playing at this level for only the second time in their history. The last time was in 2004/05 and it was probably the most successful season in the club’s history, so let’s hope for a repeat this season! After playing in the West Cheshire League since 1948-49 no one could have predicted how successful that season would be. Lairds comfortably won the title, scoring 142 league goals. That remains a record for this division (which only Nelson last season have come close to breaking). At the time it was a record for the NWCFL as a whole, and only FC United of Manchester’s tally of 157 goals in the Premier Division of 06/07 have beaten that since. During 04/05 Lairds scored 4 or more goals in a game on an incredible 23 occasions out of a possible 36. This helped them finish 10 points clear of nearest rivals Silsden. There were that many standout results that it would be impossible to fit them all on just this space, so here is a selection: 

Saturday 18th December 2004—LAIRDS 8-1 Flixton, and Monday 2nd May 2005—Flixton 0-6 LAIRDS. These results were against a team who had a goal difference of just –7 that season, which is not bad for a team that finished 2nd from bottom.

Cheadle Town were a mid-table team that season, not that you would have known that when they played Lairds: Tuesday 1st March 2005—LAIRDS 7-1 Cheadle Town The return was an even better result: Wednesday 20th April 2005—Cheadle Town 1-9 LAIRDS.

Blackpool Mechanics finished just above Cheadle in 10th place, but they must have been wishing that they could never play Lairds again! Tuesday 12th October 2004—LAIRDS 8-1 Blackpool Mechanics Tuesday 30th November 2004—Blackpool Mechanics 0-5 LAIRDS

In Lairds first fixture at this level, they drew 1-1 away to Padiham. However, for the fixture at Lairds, there was only one team in the game: Saturday 19th February 2005—LAIRDS 6-0 Padiham. Perhaps it should be pointed out that our opponents finished just two places outside a promotion place.

Lairds won the title with just 3 defeats in the league, 2 of which were against 2nd placed Silsden, and a goal difference of 108.

LAIRDS WELCOME…

HANLEY TOWN THE BASICS

Stadium: Abbey Lane

Established: 1966

Nickname: Town turned in 2004/05 when Darren Stair and Dave Price guided a young Hanley Town first team to a treble; League Champions, League Challenge Cup Winners and Staffordshire FA Vase Winners. The following season saw the club retain the league title, losing just once. However, they lost to Ball Haye Green in the Leek Cup Final.

History The club’s roots go back to 1883 and possibly even earlier, with the club playing in the North Staffordshire Federation League coming up against sides like Port Vale. However around 1912 Hanley Town folded for a period of time.

2006-11 saw both First and Second teams finishing in the top six of their respective divisions, and it was in 2011-12 that Darren’s brother, Colin Stair, and Dave Price guided Hanley Town First Team to the Staffordshire County Senior League Premier title, whilst the Second Team won the Division One title under the management of Mark Giblin and Steve Harrison.

In 1966, a group of friends formed a team running from the Trumpet Pub in Hanley City Centre, playing in local leagues. The team called themselves Hanley Town, and at this time played from Victoria Road on land owned by a local engineering company: Copestick & Farrell. In the early 1970s, the land was sold to developers and Hanley Town started to groundshare with Eastwood Hanley.

2012-13 was the most successful season to date, when Colin Stair and Dave Price saw their team achieve a remarkable Quadruple, winning the Staffordshire County Senior League, League Challenge Cup, Staffordshire FA Vase and the Leek Cup. The Reserve Team were also promoted to the Staffs County Senior League Premier Division.

In 1976, the team moved to its present location— Abbey Lane, Buckhill—playing in the Mid Cheshire League. From their new venue, they gained promotion to the First Division in 1978, and won the new Staffordshire Vase 2-1 over two legs against Chasetown in 1981. The following year saw the team reach the final of the Staffordshire FA Vase again, this time losing 2-0 over two legs to Eastwood Hanley.

Sadly, just one month prior to the end of the season, Colin Stair, the driving force behind the club joining the North West Counties Football League passed away suddenly. More than ever, this tragedy resulted in the club sticking together to ensure that promotion to the North West Counties Football League was achieved.

In 1982 the club became champions, losing just two of their thirty games and winning the League Cup. In 1988, the club applied for membership of the North West Counties League, but with new ground grading being introduced at the time the club failed in its application. Unfortunately from here, the club went into a steady decline, finding themselves relegated to the Second Division of the Mid-Cheshire League, then back in local football. The club stayed in local football for a while, before returning to the Staffordshire County Senior League, where progress continued.

2013-14 saw Hanley Town as newcomers to the NWCFL, finishing 4th in the league, and finishing losing finalists in the First Division Cup, losing to Formby on penalties.

Under the new management of Darren Stair, 2003 saw Hanley Town reach its first cup final in many years, losing to Norton/Adderley Green. Success re-

OPPOSITION IN FOCUS Hanley Town are competing in their second NWCFL season, and it’s fair to say that both have been a huge success for the Staffordshire-based outfit. Last season, Town had no problems adapting to the level of football, as is shown by their excellent 4th placed finish. In fact, there were some real standout results for the side: champions Nelson were humbled at Abbey Lane, as Town ran out 3-0 winners, and for the reverse fixture, Town came back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to win 4-3. This was on top of a run to the First Division Challenge Cup final, where in a thrilling final, they were beaten by Formby (who dominated the division for two seasons) on penalties. Perhaps most impressive about their league performance was the comfortable seven point margin between them and Atherton Collieries in fifth … and we know what a good side they are from this season! The hope was that the momentum could be carried into this season. It certainly started off that way, with eight wins from their first twelve games, and two of their four defeats were against ourselves and Colls. From that start, again some results in particular caught the eye—and one individual in particular. In terms of results, there were impressive wins at Daisy Hill and AFC Darwen (where only one other team have won in the league, and ourselves and Colls have had three points taken off us). However, it was the margin of victories that caught the eye, because it emphasised their dominance of those games. Ashton Town were beaten 6-0 at Abbey Lane, and to follow a 3-0 win at Darwen up with a 7-1 victory at Eccleshall shows their quality. Going back to the individual who caught the eye. Theo Stair scored five of Town’s goals in the 6-0 win over Ashton—the only player to score five in a game this season; he scored thirteen goals in those first twelve league games, and it’s those kind of records that make him one of the most feared players in the division. Specifically looking at the meeting with Lairds, it was one of our best results and performances of the season as an outstanding second half display saw us run out 4-0 winners. A close first-half saw some good chances squandered by both teams, and the teams went into the break level. However, clinical finishing from Lairds in the second half saw the three points go back to Merseyside, and was an early sign of Lairds finding their feet at NWCFL to prepare for the successful season to follow. For Town, there were enough signs to show that they would recover, and their start proves that they clearly did that and were soon competing at the top of the division. However, after a blip that saw Town go four league games without a win and exit two cup competitions, manager Steve Harrison left the club. Two ex-managers stepped in—Dave Price was in charge last season, and Darren Stair was another former manager (his brother, Colin Stair, led Town to the NWCFL before his tragic death shortly before the end of the 2012-13 season when they won an quadruple that saw them gain promotion). At first, progress under Price and Stair was a little slow, winning just two of their first six league games in charge. However, since the end of January, Town have been absolutely excellent, winning 28 points out of 30 up to mid-April. Crucial wins over AFC Darwen, Barnton and Cheadle Town saw them cement their top 6 place. Although they were handed back-to-back defeats by Litherland REMYCA and Chadderton, Town became the first team to secure a play-off berth, as they eased past Irlam at Abbey Lane courtesy of a 3-0 victory: Josh Thorpe, Theo Stair and Jamie Turner got Town’s goals. That was followed up with an excellent 5-0 win at Rochdale Town on Tuesday. So, now that Town know that their participation in the play-offs is confirmed, their attention turns to continuing their momentum to give themselves the best possible chance of playing in the NWCFL Premier Division next season, a task that is surely achievable for such a

8

talented side. This is proved in their truly impressive record against the current top 6—they have done the double over AFC Darwen and Barnton (4th and 5th respectively), and beat 6th placed Holker Old Boys 4-2 at Abbey Lane. We wish them well in their quest to gain the final promotion place. For Lairds, Theo Stair is clearly the man to watch – he has scored 42 goals this season at the time of writing. That is bettered only by Mark Battersby’s (Atherton Colls) 61 goal haul. However, there are also many other reliable sources of goals in Town’s team: Josh Thorpe has seven and Jamie Turner six (and both scored in the game against Irlam that secured their play-off place), whilst Leigh Skellern has four in his last seven games. Managers Two experienced men stepped in in November to halt Town’s poor run of form. Dave Price and Darren Stair have really got this Hanley team going. Perhaps this is because, in Price’s words: “We have both been involved with the club for a number of years, we know the set-up, the players and what is expected of us.” Price was in charge last season, when Town finished 4th and reached the First Division Challenge Cup final. The pair were also in charge at Abbey Lane in 2004/05 when they won a treble by becoming League Champions, League Challenge Cup Winners and Staffordshire FA Vase Winners. The pair will hand the reins over to Dean Owen, ex-Norton United second team boss, at the end of the season, so will hope to achieve promotion via the play-offs.

Us vs Them This is the second meeting between the sides, the first taking place way back in August, as a brilliant second half performance secured a great win for Lairds, as Craig Cairns, Danny O’Brien, Joe Holt and Freddie Potter got the goals. MACCA’S Message Manager Paul McNally shares his thoughts Good afternoon everybody and welcome to the MBS Stadium for our league clash against Hanley Town. It’s been a wonderful season that has seen us achieve what we needed—promotion to the NWCFL Premier Division. We now want to finish with as many points as possible to round off a brilliant season, and today’s visit of Hanley provides an opportunity for three more points. We last met back in August, and it was one of our best performances of the season to win 4-0. However, we know the strength that our opponents have, which is shown by their current league position. It’s the final home game of the season, which provides me with an opportunity to thank people. Firstly, my thanks to the players for their effort and commitment this season, the committee for their wonderful support and all our fans for their loyalty throughout this campaign. I hope we’ve given them something to be proud of. Finally, have a great summer, and I’ll see you back here for our pre-season schedule! Enjoy the game and let's keep the train rolling on to our destination ! #ChooChoo, Thanks

LAIRDS LOG A LOOK AT ON THE FIELD MATTERS OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF MONTHS Reports by Patrick Burke

LAIRDS PASS ROBINS’ TEST WITH FLYING COLOURS Cammell Laird 1907 edged closer to promotion courtesy of a comfortable 4-1 win over Wigan Robin Park. The early stages saw Lairds struggle to break down stubborn opposition, Adam Hughes miskicking Lairds’ best opportunity. However, Hughes made up for that by breaking the deadlock after half an hour: it was a clinical counter-attacking move, coolly finished by Hughes after he was found by Holt. Just before the break, Tom Owens’ first goal for Lairds doubled their advantage, as he headed home from Holt’s centre. The second half had only just started when from out of nowhere, Phil Howard got Wigan back into the game with a fantastic thirty yard strike. Lairds then seemed to play with a few nerves, first surviving a strong penalty appeal, then Howard seeing his effort well saved. A third goal was needed, and after two first-half assists, Holt got himself on the scoresheet, before getting his second and Lairds fourth on the hour mark. Substitute Paul Foy came close a couple of times to extending the lead, but there were to be no further goals—4-1 the final score.

THOMAS ENSURES TRIUMPH OVER TOWN A 30th minute goal by James Thomas was enough for Lairds to record a narrow 1-0 victory at a Rochdale Town side who held Lairds to a 2-2 draw back in August. It was a big three points for Paul McNally’s team to stay top of the NWCFL Division One.

ONE OF THOSE DAYS AT AFC DARWEN

A CLASSIC GAME OF TWO HALVES

Lairds faced what looked a tricky trip to play-off contenders AFC Darwen, hoping for three points to put promotion within touching distance. In a first-half that saw Lairds dominate, Holt was tripped by Douglas—penalty to Lairds and the Darwen defender Douglas sent off for a professional foul. Lairds limited the hosts to few chances, but just before the break, Paul Coote was played in on goal, and he rounded Langley to level the scores. With the last action of the half, Lairds somehow found themselves behind, as Coote finished off a Darwen counter-attack. However, there was real controversy about the goal, and Lairds felt aggrieved that the home side’s goalkeeper Stefan Holden was not shown red, in fact not punished at all, as his very late challenge inside the box with studs up left Foy in agony.

Lairds had the chance to respond to the defeat at Darwen, as they hosted Widnes at the MBS Stadium. However, in the first-half, they were substandard, and an own goal by Andy Morgan gave Widnes a deserved lead, which Lee Hughes and Graham Molloy came close to adding to.

Buoyed by a sense of injustice, Lairds went about getting an equaliser, but would have gone further behind had Coote punished Tosney for his poor back pass. From then on, Lairds had chances blocked on the line, efforts excellently saved and were on the end of a poor decision, as the referee failed to play advantage with Vassallo in on goal. The day ended in disappointment, even more so as Thomas needlessly retaliated to some rough treatment, and was sent off towards the end just moments after coming on.

15

Things needed to improve, and thankfully they did after just one minute in the second half, with Henders equalising. From then on, it was a one-sided affair as the visitors tired. Substitute Paul Speed’s brilliant long ranger soon had Lairds 2-1 up, and Henders tapped home for number three on the hour mark. Adam Hughes’ effort on the run was fumbled by the keeper into the net, before a brilliantly worked fifth was added: O’Brien, Gibiluru, Thomas and Cairns carved the visitors open, with the latter’s cross perfect for Gibiluru to convert. There was still time for one more, and what a pleasing sight it was to see top scorer Craig Cairns heading home after a month out of action.

CHADDERTON MAKE A HUGE DENT IN LAIRDS’ TITLE HOPES Lairds were handed a second defeat in a week on the road at play-off chasing Darwen; however, whilst the defeat at Darwen was extremely unfortunate, this was a game in which Lairds didn’t perform to the high standards set this season. Despite Lairds knowing that three points would result in promotion, it took just five minutes for Sean Sherwood to edge Chadderton into the lead with a nice finish past Kevin Atherton. However, the first-half was very dull and low on quality, Lairds only creating a couple of half-chances, with their link-up play in the final third poor. The start of the second half was much improved from the away side, with Dale Latham in Chadderton’s goal now being made to work. Firstly, Gibiluru’s effort was deflected by Holt, which resulted in Latham having to readjust excellently to tip over—that save certainly could be used as evidence to support the view that he is one of the best goalkeepers in the league. Up the other end, Atherton made a superb double stop, first from Russell and then showing brilliant agility, recovering to tip Done’s effort onto the bar. However, substitute Paul Foy could count himself very unlucky to be shown a straight red card after a 50/50 challenge—in fact, it was hard to tell at first which way the referee was going to award the free-kick, because both players had challenged for the same ball and neither seemed to be over the top or acting dangerously. Latham again saved well from Thomas’ free-kick, before Henders squandered the last chance of the match by heading inches over the bar, as Lairds were made to wait for promotion.

LAIRDS IN HIGH SPIRITS ON A FINE DAY IN WIDNES Just a few weeks after welcoming Widnes to the MBS Stadium, Lairds made a first visit to the 13,350 capacity Select Security Stadium. With promotion sealed but the title looking an increasingly unlikely prospect, Paul McNally experimented with three at the back, composing of Ferrigan, Reilly and Morgan. It proved effective for one of those centre-backs, as Lairds 100th league goal of the season was driven in from long range by Steve Ferrigan! Henders then saw his smart first time effort hit the post, before Gibiluru doubled the lead with a composed finish. It could have been a lot better for Lairds, but the woodwork intervened twice more: first to deny Hughes, and then Holt being extremely unfortunate to see his effort clip the inside of the post then bounce back out. Into the second half, Holt made it three as Lairds clearly began to enjoy their football in the sun, playing with a real freedom. That was epitomised by Adam Hughes, who constantly found space between the lines, and had two goals to his name by the end of the game. Firstly, Hartley played an inch perfect pass inside the Widnes right-back, Hughes finishing well, and his second arriving just before the end. Again, Hartley was the provider, delivering a perfect cross for the unmarked Hughes to head into the net via the crossbar. The final whistle shortly followed, and Lairds could reflect on a good afternoon's work.

16

GOING UP! Lairds had a two week break before their next match, as they searched for a win at bottom side Oldham Boro to guarantee promotion. Realising what happened in their last outing at Chadderton, Lairds came flying out of the blocks, and Henders and Holt made it two to the good before the half-hour mark. Lairds were proving too good for their opponents, and a Henders penalty ensured that it was a long way back for Boro, taking a 3-0 half-time lead. Cairns and Henders were starting together for the first time since the latter’s return to the club, and were forming quite a formidable partnership—just how strong could the squad be next season if those two can link up as well as they did to continue their brilliant scoring rate? Cairns was fouled just after half-time, and Henders again made no mistake from the spot. It was the same pattern of play for Lairds final goal—Cairns fouled, Henders converting the spot kick! Overall, a brilliant day for 1907, who secured promotion to the NWCFL Premier Division at the first attempt. Lairds can now look forward to local derbies against the likes of Bootle and AFC Liverpool, and plan meetings with some old friends and foes.

THREE MORE POINTS IN THE PENULTIMATE AWAY GAME Although Atherton Collieries had by now secured a deserved league title, Lairds still had nine points to play for, starting at Atherton LR. The game started slowly, but just before the thirty minute mark, Joe Gibiluru put Lairds into the lead—his fifth of the season. Right on the stroke of half-time, Joe Holt continued his productive season in front of goal by doubling Lairds’ advantage. After the break, John Couch made it 3 -0 to Lairds, as he breached LR’s offside trap before beating Dorsey. Daniel Smith pulled one back for Laburnum Rovers, and although Henders saw his penalty saved by the goalkeeper’s legs, it made no difference to the final outcome, as Lairds made it three successive wins on the road.

RESERVES ROUND-UP RECENT GAMES It’s been a brilliant season for Lairds, but unfortunately the volume of fixtures has proved a little too much for the squad recently, which has ended our title hopes. Since the Wigan Robin Park home game, the Reserves have:  In the big clash versus South Liverpool on 7th March, the sides shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw—Jay Clare was on the scoresheet for Lairds.  Secured an excellent 2-1 win at Maghull on 14th March— Jack Ford and Ben Holmes with the goals.  Secured their place in the Pyke Cup final on 21st March, courtesy of a 2-1 win at home to Helsby, as Will Bulpin and Jay Clare won the semi-final.  April has been very busy, with seven games played so far, the first of which was a good 2-0 win at Mossley Hill Athletic on the 4th with strikes from Lee Bridge and Jay Clare.  On Wednesday 8th, Lairds proved too good for Newton in a PYKE CUP FINAL 30 second preview 5-1 victory at the MBS Stadium. Danny Brooks, Will Bulpin, LAIRDS VS SOUTH LIVERPOOL Jay Clare, Kevin Fitzsimmons and Karl Murphy each got a Vauxhall Motors FC ground address: Vauxhall Sports goal a piece. & Social Club, Rivacre Road, Hooton, South Wirral,  However, a 1-0 reverse at Hale on Saturday 11th handed CH66 1NJ South Liverpool the advantage in the title race—only Runs to the final—Lairds: Lairds’ second defeat all season.  1st round—11/11/14: Hale 2-3 Lairds (AET)  Lairds responded with a 4-1 win at Ashville on the Monday.  Quarter finals—14/02/15—Lairds 1-1 Newton Danny Dixon scored twice, with Josh Hughes and Karl Mur(won 4-3 on pens) phy also amongst the goals.  Semi finals—21/03/15—Lairds 2-1 Helsby  However, a 3rd game in 5 days proved too much, as Lairds Runs to the final—South Liverpool: were defeated 2-0 by West Kirby.  1st round—08/11/14—South Liverpool 5-0  Our title hopes were ended last Saturday, as Mallaby were Ashville 2-0 victors at the MBS Stadium.  Quarter finals—14/02/15—Chester Nomads 1 However, we were still able to bounce back on Wednes2 South Liverpool day, with a 2-1 win at home against Capenhurst Villa: Kyle  Semi finals—21/03/15—South 4-0 Capenhurst Jones and Karl Murphy got the goals. Villa UPCOMING FIXTURES This season’s meetings: There are still two league games to play, with the Pyke Cup final  Sat 07/03/15—Lairds 1-1 South Liverpool next Friday evening.  Sat 13/09/14—South Liverpool 1-0 Lairds  Saturday 25th April 2015, 15:00, League: Lairds league position: 2nd Upton vs CAMMELL LAIRD 1907 RESERVES South Liverpool league position: 1st (champions)  Monday 27th April 2015, 18:45, League: Mallaby vs CAMMELL LAIRD 1907 RESERVES The big game is the Pyke Cup final against champions South Liverpool, taking place at Vauxhall Motors FC  Friday 1st May 2015, 19:00, Pyke Cup Final: CAMMELL LAIRD 1907 RESERVES vs South Liverpool * - Points deduction

CLUB NEWS PART 1 Charity Collection at Today’s game Blue Apple Heroes are holding a collection for ex-military personnel at today’s game. The Warrington based charity supports veterans and their families across the North West with all aspects of the transition to civilian life. Founder Mark Smith said "Our vets often find it difficult to readjust to their new life outside of the military and the support we offer is in a safe and comforting environment. It allows them to meet and chat with other vets and access additional support if required. We would like to thank the club for allowing us to make a collection at the Hanley game.“ Chairman Frank Games commented: “The charity approached the club via Toddy Wood, club Secretary, and we were delighted to offer to help this worthy cause. We hope that everyone who comes down to the game on Saturday will show their support". Mascot Packages Throughout this season, the club have offered mascot packages for home games, and they have proved a massive success with young fans like Tristan at our home game versus Wigan Robin Park (pictured right). To find out more about options for next season, please speak to a member of staff. FA Chartered Standard Adult Status On 16th March, Chairman Frank Games was delighted to receive the news that the club had been granted the Adult Charter Status from the FA. "Such awards are key to show to potential sponsors etc... that the club is moving in the right direction. Particular thanks goes to Toddy Wood, our secretary who put in the work behind the scene to get the club through the process".

BURKE’S Banter Welcome to our final game of the season at the MBS Stadium against Hanley Town. In particular, we welcome the directors, players, staff and supporters who have made the journey from Staffordshire. It’s been nearly two months since my last column, and much has changed! That game saw us comfortably ease past Wigan Robin Park courtesy of a 4-1 victory. As soon as Adam Hughes managed to find a way past a resolute back four, you knew that a few more were going to follow, and the margin of victory was about right. Then, James Thomas’ goal saw us squeeze past Rochdale Town (though I wasn’t at that match, so I don’t have much to say about it!), before a defeat at AFC Darwen saw our title hopes begin to fade. In that match, I don’t think I’m being biased in any way when I say that the best team lost! Jay (Henders) put us in front, and from then on we dominated pretty much the entire game. However, we somehow found ourselves going into the break 2-1 behind, as Paul Coote scored in the 44th and 45th minute. However, it was obvious to almost everyone in the ground that in the build-up to the second goal, Paul Foy was completely taken out by Darwen’s goalkeeper: a challenge that should have resulted in a penalty and possibly a red. In the second half, we did everything but get the equaliser as Darwen defended heroically. Having said all of that, you have to take your chances in football, and we should give credit to our opponents, who defended brilliantly and were clinical—they have shown their quality by handing Colls just a second league defeat of the season last Friday. Moving on from that, signs of nerves and a bit of tiredness were there in the first half of our game at home to Widnes, with our opponents having a deserved 1-0 lead at half-time. Thankfully, Macca did brilliantly at half-time to galvanise the squad, as we scored six goals without response, including two from Jay, and most pleasingly, a goal for Craig Cairns on his return from injury. However, if we were unlucky to lose at Darwen, we got exactly what we deserved when we went down 1-0 at Chadderton, which all but ended our title hopes. Sean Sherwood gave the hosts an early lead, which they deserved—the closest we came was when a deflected effort from Gibiluru was terrifically saved by Chadderton’s highly-rated Dale Latham. After missing that chance to gain promotion, we bounced back with a comprehensive 5-0 victory at Oldham Boro. I was gutted that I missed out on that game, but four goals from Jamie Henders helped us to the necessary three points. I did however, thoroughly enjoy our game in the sun at Widnes, as we again ran out 5-0 winners by totally dominating the game against decent opposition; I was also glad that my uncle, going to his first Lairds game, thoroughly enjoyed himself! Finally, despite there being little to play for, we showed our professionalism with a comfortable 3-1 win at an Atherton LR side who took a point from the meeting earlier in the season. I’m writing these notes before our game at Eccleshall on Wednesday, so I have now finished my review of our ‘recent’ games! Today’s game will provide a particularly tough test, with Hanley Town lying third in the league, and possessing a real asset in Theo Stair, who has scored 42 goals this season. Therefore, we will have to be at our best in order to obtain three points, against opponents who will be keen to gather momentum for their play-off campaign, for which I wish them well. It’s been a brilliant season, and but for the incredible form and quality of Atherton Collieries, surely we would be lifting a lead title today? For me, it’s been an amazing year with Lairds which has helped me to gain so much experience for my journalism ambitions, and I look forward to building on that next season! If we’re looking for a moment that could have changed the outcome, I guess you could say if the ball had not rebounded not once, but twice to a Colls attacker in our meeting in December, perhaps we might have won that game and may have even gone on to win the league—but we congratulate Colls on their achievements this season! Finally, if you want to follow me on twitter, I am: @pburke_CL1907. We thank you for your support this season; enjoy the game and have a safe journey home! I’ll see you back here in the summer!

Thursday—The Men United Cup Final Atherton Colls vs Glossop North End (played at Curzon Ashton FC) TODAY’S PERMUTATIONS Play-Offs  Hanley Town and AFC Darwen have secured their play-off place.  A win for Holker Old Boys will secure their play-off berth.  Chadderton played Oldham Boro on Thursday: if they won that game, three points would secure their playoff place. However, anything else would mean that Barnton could secure the final-spot if they win at home to Widnes. Wooden Spoon  Oldham Boro played Chadderton on Thursday: a win and they would be replaced at the foot of the table by Wigan Robin Park. Anything else however, and Oldham will finish bottom if they don’t better Wigan’s result today.
