On August 15, we were all stunned by the terrible news that Chris Peeler had passed away in a tragic accident that had taken place that weekend. As it resonated through the stalls and warm up rings that this bright, fantastic member of our close-knit horse family was not going to be with us for this or any future show, it was evident that he was so much more than one of our up and coming halter trainers and horsemen – he was part of our horse family. Our deepest condolences go out to Leslie and Don, Chris’ parents, and to everyone at Flightline Farm Arabians in Langley, BC. He will be missed. A memorial to Chris will run in the January, 2011 issue of the News. Canadian Arabian Horse News

t was a bit of the old mixed in with the new at the Royal Red this year. Evraz Place completed
some major upgrading that saw a completely new facility, the Co-operators Centre, set up to the north of the Brandt Centre. This facility housed most of the stabling, two warmup rings and Ring 2, as well as the commercial exhibits. As with any new building, there were a few glitches to iron out, but for the most part these were minor – there are a lot of plusses to having everything under one roof, especially if the weather won’t co-operate. Saskatchewan had a record amount of rain this summer – many areas of the province received 30" or more. But even though residents were warning competitors to pack every piece of warm and waterproof clothing they had (plus bug spray), we were lucky enough to get only scattered showers at the beginning of the show. We were really looking forward to Nationals this year, and for good reason – there were a lot of great horses here to compete! 742 entries arrived in Regina, SK for the 53rd round of the Canadian National Championships, with nearly 600 horses from south of the border. The 2010 Canadian National Championship Stallion title was a battle of the titans so to speak. Former National Champion Stallions Pyro Thyme SA (Pryme Thyme x Holly Onfire JW), with Andy Sellman, and LD Pistal (Magnum Psyches x Halana), lead by David Boggs, along with Scottsdale winner SF Veraz (*Gazal Al Shaqab x Veronica GA) were seen to be the early favourites. Once the dust settled, in a bit of an upset, the ring belonged to none of the October 2010 Newsletter

frontrunners, but rather to a newcomer on the show scene. Our 2010 Canadian National Champion is Tribute Thyme SA (Pryme Thyme x Diamond Tribute) owned by Richard Hensley of Piedmont, Oklahoma and lead by Steve Heathcott. The Reserve Champion Stallion was Pyro Thyme SA lead by Andy Sellman. Pyro Thyme SA and Tribute Thyme SA are half-brothers, both bred by Tom and June Yahola of Oklahoma. Tribute Thyme SA had one of the highest halter scores at the show with 341 points. The mare class was no less dramatic with the exquisite bay Taleed El Qardabijah (Magnum Psyche x Jamaara FA) taking Championship honours with a total score of 336. She is owned by Israa Waleed Giuma Ben Zaied and lead by David Boggs of Midwest Training Center. The Reserve was the stunning grey import from Brazil, *Dasha Van Ryad (Ryad El Jamaal x Van Strike), also expertly handled by Andy Sellman with a score of 332. Warren and Jan Fertig’s stunning filly, RA Nefertiti (Marwan Al Shaqab x Maggie Mae PGA), gave spectators and fans a real nail-biter of a performance in the purebred Futurity Fillies class. With Greg Knowles at the lead, Nefertiti tied in points for the Championship, but was edged out by Miss Giovanna, with the tie-breaker being based on the Type score. A Reserve Championship in the Half-Arabian Futurity Fillies went to Born To Shyne DF (by Canadian stallion Shy Gayfeen+++// and bred by Destiny Farms), handled by Deb Storey for proud owner Melissa MacLellan. The up-and-coming young stallions also put on a great show. Mike and Sheena Steenhart’s Spitfyre VF (TF Psymreekhe x Red Flame BRSB), shown by Claudinei Machado, was one point shy of the Reserve garland in the Two-Year-Old Colts class. Claudinei also showed Tex Kam’s Kalahari (Gazal Al Shaqab x Kirscha) to a Top Ten in Futurity Colts. Wunderbar Arabians had a solid string of Top Tens in halter, with Ashley David’s Daughtry (Mariachi WA x RD Bey Lauren) and Maegan Friesen’s Dorian WA (Denali BHF x Design By Class) placing in the Two-Year-

Natalie Alves and her sister Rebecca had an exciting show year with Pringle’s training centre. Natalie’s season culminated in an exciting National Championship in Showmanship JT 13& Under with AW Psyches Mateo+, plus Top Tens in purebred Hunter Pleasure JO and JT 13 & Under. Emily Fast and O Serrano+// of Chilliwack, BC had an exciting win in Western Horsemanship JT 13 & Under, and her sister Hailey took the bay gelding to a Reserve Championship in Horsemanship JT 14-17 and a Top Ten in Western Pleasure JT 14-17. Isobelle Ehret continued her winning ways with three National Championships and two Reserves. She piloted KV Once And Again++++// to top honors in purebred Hunter Pleasure JT 14-17 for owners Gordon and Louisa Breitkreuz. Half-Arabian So Double Your Bet+// took Isobelle to championships in HA Hunter Pleasure JT and JO 14-17. In the English division, Isobelle rode to Reserve Championships in HA English Show Hack JT 17 & Under with her own Strikes Sinbad+//, and HA English Pleasure JT 17 & Under with Scotty So Hotty for owner Kim Kelemen. It just seemed fitting that in his last class as a junior rider, Brandon Leubner closed out this year with a bang – or rather, with a Reserve Championship in the HA Western JT 14-17 aboard his “partner in crime” Mista Poco Mon. The duo also claimed a Top Ten in the JO 17 & Under, and Brandon partnered with CA Prom Queen for Top Tens in HA Country English Pleasure JO and JT 17 & Under. More Top Tens on page 15... Reining at Canadian Nationals I
t’s no secret that Arabian reining has been exploding in popularity over the past few years, and many of the foundation bloodlines found in Canada have been particularly successful. Allison Mostowich’s VLQ Friendly Fire+// slid into two more National Championships in 2010, taking the purebred Open reining with LaRae Fletcher Powell and the AOTR 18-39 with Allison. VLQ Friendly Fire+// is by Forelock’s Petja out of Polka Jane (Edytor) and was bred by Vanessa and Lorne Quartly of Innisfail, AB. In 2009 he claimed a “Quadruple Crown”, winning Open and AO Reining Championships at both Canadian and US Nationals. We wish them the best of luck at US Nationals this year! Reserve in the purebred Open Reining went to EAF Pepper+ (Hesa Zee+/ x Marianda), ridden by Rod Matthiesen for owner Jane McKinnon. A Top Ten in that class went to Sharon McLean, riding The Midnite Mist for owner/breeder Carol Cross of Earl Grey, SK. The Midnite Mist is by The Desert Chief (Shamruk++), out of a Pyatigorsk grand-daughter. Leah McKinney Lawrence and halfArabian BSF Gunsmoke (Were Dun AQHA) spun up a Reserve Championship in the HA Reining AO. Trainer LaRae Fletcher Powell took the reins and rode to another welldeserved Championship in the HA Open. Leah and Dos A Tango also claimed a Top Ten in the purebred AOTR 18-39 final. Top Tens in the HA Open Reining went to three Canadian-bred horses. Blue Reflection, owned by Ian Wishaw and shown by Jim Anderson, is by Canadian stallion Baloo Reflection (MFA Hulabaloo). Delwoods Jude (Brassy Merit AQHA), bred by Gina Wedel and owned by Robert Wedel, was also shown by Jim Anderson. Owner/ rider Sharon MacLean competed on Kashas Zanzybar Black (Pocos Prince 017 AQHA), who’s dam is linebred Y-Jenks (Edytor).

Old Gelding Jackpot, Aikonic WA (Sir Fames HBV x Aikonelle PR) and Presidio WA (Mariachi WA x Bey Leora) in purebred Futurity Geldings, and Jump Shake N Boogie WA (Mariachi WA) in HA Futurity Geldings. Canadian entries were once again a dominant force in the Hunter division. Sheena Steenhart’s beautiful grey mare MSU Seraphim took the Championship in the purebred Hunter Jr Horse with Todd Ehret. The purebred Hunter (Open) went to Sting SMA with Kim Christy up; Sting SMA went Top Ten in ATR and AOTR 40 & Over with owner Joanne Grossman. Seasoned show veteran Chance to Jam+// added to his collection of red roses in the HA Hunter Open, ridden by Cheryl Fletcher, and in the AOTR and ATR 18-39 with owner Ashley Toye. Chance to Jam+// and Cheryl also picked up a Reserve in HA Ladies’ English Side Saddle. In the HA Hunter AOTR 40 & Over, So Double Your Bet+// (by the legendary Bey Shah+ son Soldat) took the top spot with Andrea Ehret riding. The purebred English Side Saddle Championship went to GSF Makin A Fortune ++++// and Jada Reed, for owners Ashleigh, Elizabeth, and Gordon Clark of Aldergrove, BC. In the purebred AT English Side Saddle, the championship went to O Lordy++// and owner Laura Wolsey. In the purebred Western Side Saddle AT, A Little Piece of Heaven+// (Surokhan x LR Ghia by Gaypolka++) and Ashley
Fyfe-Brown claimed the Reserve Championship for owner/breeder Susan Fyfe of Keno Hills in Sherwood Park, AB. A Reserve in the purebred Western Pleasure Junior Horse Championship went to Versace daghter Sonoma Jazz+, ridden by LaRae Fletcher-Powell for owner Laura Stewart of Richmond, BC. Another Versace descendant, Wunderbar’s Sabrina WA (Couturier x Brooklyn Bey), added a Top Ten in that class to her numerous wins. Ashley Toye picked up another Reserve Championship with her western horse, Cielo E+//, in the purebred Western Pleasure AO 18-39. It’s been a while since one of our Canadian horses trotted out with a garland in the Driving, but we have a Reserve this year. Jacquie Hugill-Girard and the always exciting Concorde did the work in the HA Pleasure Driving, but we certainly don’t mind reveling in the victory along with her. The long trip from Ontario was well worth it for Tara Porter and Shake It Up, who were reserve in the HA Native Costume ATR (and Top Ten in the Open) and, although the drive was not nearly as far, this was a Nationals that Alberta girl Brittany Mackenzie is glad she didn’t miss. Brittany brought her horse Riga SMA (bred by Joanne Grossman) for just one class – the PB Country Select ATR – and they stepped out of the ring with a Reserve Championship. In Trail, PS Poison+// claimed two Championships – one in the purebred Open with trainer LaRae Fletcher Powell and one in the AO with Leah McKinney Lawrence. Reserve in the AO went to Karen Caughell and Fire Majik+//, who also had the honor of October 2010 Newsletter 13

bearing the Canadian flag in Saturday night’s opening ceremonies – although they nearly went “off course” when Karen’s hat came loose! Karen had one hand on her hat and one hand on the flag, and Fire Majik decided she was feeling up for a nice gallop – the crowd got a bit of a thrill but luckily it all ended well.
SPORT HORSE CLASSES The news in Sport Horse was that Canadian horses swept the halter championships. Sport Horse Stallions saw C Our Zeus++, shown by Brenda Driediger and bred and owned by Susan MacDonald, take Championship honors; the Mares title went to Gord & Louisa Breitkreuz’s KV Once And Again++++// with Todd Ehret; and the top nod in the Geldings went to C Sir Madre++++// (also bred by Susan MacDonald) and Conley Driediger. In the Half-Arabian halter, the Mares Championship went to PridesPrecious Moment++ (Posh CAHR) and Brenda Driediger for owner Lacey Whittingham. Reserve in the HA Geldings was earned by ESP Hercules++++// (x KGB Natural High (KGB Intrigue)) and Marilyn Robinson. Lorraine Prowse and Sur Teddy’s Magna+// (Surokhan x HM Magna) had a big win in the purebred Sport Horse Under Saddle AT. Her Keno Hills stablemate Robyn Sibbald went Reserve in 14 Canadian Arabian Horse News
a huge HA Sport Horse AT with Susan Fyfe’s Diamond Coy (x Krystyl (Roanoak Barlo)), bred by Eric Brand Training Stables. Lorraine and Sur Teddy’s Magna also took a Championship in Arabian Hunter Hack and Reserves in Arabian Working Hunter Open and AO, going second to Allan Ehrlick and his Straight Egypian gelding Dal-Apollo+// from Campbellville, ON. DalApollo and Allan picked up a Reserve in purebred Working Hunter AT, and Allan had another Reserve with EVG Ellie Mae in HA Working Hunter (Open). The coveted red roses also went home with Christina Passey and Canadian-bred TR Tequila Sunrise++++// for their ride in HA Sport Horse Show Hack. In dressage, Suzanne Calnan and Irresistible Grace++// (AA Profile x Ssimply Irresistible by GH Venture) claimed top score in Training Level AT for owner and breeder Lori Quinn of Surrey, BC. Aurline Russel and her grey FV Aulirabba+ won a Reserve in the Second Level test. FV Aulirabba+ (Aur Mystique x FV Aurabba) was bred by Dr. David Ward of Fairview Farms in Okanagan Falls, BC. With Sport Horse Nationals to be held in Kentucky for the next five years, it’s hoped we’ll see even greater numbers in the Sport Horse division at next year’s Canadian Nationals.
