Blood Typing Important Update The lab that processes our Blood Type kits has informed the CAHR that we will see a substantial increase in the cost to process blood types starting in January 1st, 2011. This will be reflected in the 2011 schedule of fees. In addition, we recommend anyone who may need to verify parentage using blood typing get this done as soon as possible as we are unsure how long this service will be available to us.

Any tips for aspiring photographers? Don’t

7

What’s the best and worst things about your job? They’re the same thing – the travel. I

do it - ha ha! But seriously, with the invention of digital, it’s easy to shoot a lot – so I guess shoot a lot and don’t show anyone the bad ones.

get to see a lot of wonderful places, and meet a lot of great people, but that also becomes exhausting. I live in a nice place on a lake, and don’t get to enjoy my home or my family as much as I would like.

1

How did you get involved with Arabians? I almost don’t

2

Favourite “historic” horse of all time? Probably *Bask++... I

remember... I grew up on a farm in upstate New York, and was the youngest of four boys. My family had horses for as long as I can remember – my grandfather bought our first half-Arabian when I was very young. From there we got an Arabian gelding, and started showing every weekend. never had a chance to meet him, but when I started becoming really aware of Arabians he’d already started to make a huge impact on the breed and basically changed the way it is in America today.

3

Favourite “personal” horse of all time? That would have

4

What has been your most exciting moment at an Arabian horse show? Wow – I’ve been going to them for as

to be my stallion that we imported from Poland in 1999. I went over to Poland to shoot the sale catalogue, and one of the directors asked if I’d photograph his personal riding horse. When I saw *Edukt I went, holy moly, he’s gotta be mine.

long as I can remember. Probably in 2005, when I showed my HA Country English horse Funky White Boy. After about 20 years of not riding competitively, I started showing again; we ended up Top Ten and tied with the Nat’l Champion in points. That was a pretty amazing moment. We also bred Funky White Boy so that made it even more special.

5

You’re now a famous Arabian horse photographer; what other job titles have you held? None! I did briefly

train and manage a farm in Florida... and I was a glorified groom right out of college. I went to college for photography (Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY), started snapping horses when I graduated and that was that. I had to stay in the horse business and back then I was too lazy to be a trainer.

Canadian Arabian Horse News

What’s the most challenging shot you’ve ever taken? I guess maybe two come to mind.

When I was in Poland several years ago, I thought it would be a nice idea to photograph all of the mares at the one state stud farm that were going into the sale – together, without halters on. They all had babies at their sides so we put the mares on one side of a hedge and put the babies behind me. The idea was for the handlers to take the halters off and crouch down behind the ledge; I though I’d get a nice picture of six grey mares calling to their babies – it turned into an estrogen cyclone! But the result was the Dominance picture (see Stu’s website, www.vesty.com) – not at all what I had planned, but it turned out pretty great! Another of my favourites is the January 2008 Arabian Horse World cover, of Pyro Thyme SA, US Nat’l Champion Stallion in 2007. I went to Wisconsin to get a picture of him for the magazine, and it was -4ºF (-20ºC) so we ended up having to shoot indoors. I put up some curtains and studio lights and we ended up getting the shot of him tied to the wall which I thought was pretty amazing.

9

Who is your favourite Arabian horse photographer? Jerry Sparagowski and Scott

Trees are two of the reasons that I became a photographer – and I’d have to add Johnny Johnson, he’s like the George Washington of Arabian horse photography. He turned it from snapshots of horses into a professional situation. Jerry has an ability to make every horse look amazing, especially during the 80’s when there were so many sales and auctions, and the quality of the horses and photography was getting to be outstanding, he nailed it every time. And Scott for adding the artistic flare to a subject in a way I hadn’t seen before.

10

Favourite non-horse photographer(s)?

Anybody that shoots for Playboy! Obviously Ansel Adams, and Annie Leibovitz – she’s totally creative and incredible. And everyone doesn’t look like a Hollywood model – I dig her style a ton. Going way back I would say Matthew Brady, who was a civil war photographer – to be able to even be in that situation 150 or more years ago – that’s just outstanding as far as I’m concerned.

11

What’s your opinion on the AHA’s ban on ring-side photography? Ah – I’ve become a little

numb to it lately, but I was one of the biggest voices against it in the beginning. I didn’t think it was in the best interest of the exhibitors, and the promotion of Arabians in general. But it has forced center-ring photographers to try harder, I think. It still baffles me. They’re protecting the guy that’s shooting center ring, I get that part – but I don’t believe that people shooting over the rail is a threat to anyone’s livelihood.

Beverly Tokar shows ER Invictus in 3 & 4-Yr-Old Colts/Stallions AAOTH

By Nicole Toren With the torrential rains and subsequent flooding that occurred in early February throughout the greater Phoenix area, those arriving at this year’s Scottsdale Arabian Horse show kept a tentative eye on the sky – Mother Nature can be unkind to horse shows. And indeed, the typical Arizona sunshine smiled on Westworld for nearly the entire ten days, but it couldn’t hold off the clouds quite long enough. The final Saturday was a soggy mess, forcing the re-arrangement of rings and a number of schedule changes, but it was a minor blip in the grand scheme of things. In its 55th year, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse show hosted nearly 2,250 horses from all corners of North America and beyond. Canadians are no strangers to the Westworld show grounds and many of those lucky enough to bring horses went home with ribbons and glory. As always, the beginning of the show belonged to the junior riders and handlers. These are such gratifying classes to watch, not to mention the excitement of seeing the next generation of horse show enthusiasts getting their ‘feet wet’. It was Dakota McIvor’s first time in the Scottsdale ring, but if there were any first-time jitters, they were not evident. Teamed up with Diane & Madeline Comeau’s MFC Allegro, Dakota won her HA Country JTR 13 & Under qualifier and earned a Top Ten in the final. Also competing in the HA CEP 13 & Under were Khennedy Leubner and CA Prom Queen. Khennedy had two great qualifier rides and followed up with Top Tens in the JTR and JOTR 13 & Under finals. Sydney Young and her chestnut mare, City Dance, 12 Canadian Arabian Horse News

made their debut in Scottsdale and were rewarded with Top Tens in HA Hunter JTR & JOTR 13 & Under. Dana Adolphson had a number of great rides with her gelding Aftershade, and topped off her show with a Reserve Championship in HA Regular Working Hunters JTR and a Top Ten in HA Sport Horse Under Saddle JTR. Undeniably, one of the best teams out there right now has to be Conley Driediger and Winning Afire. We can’t even confine Conley to the junior rider ranks, as she consistently places high in Open Show Hack among the trainers. Their accolades included Championship roses in PB Show Hack JTR and PB Country JOTR 14-17, Top Ten in Country JTR 14-17 and 3rd in the Open Show Hack qualifier. Conley also earned Top Tens with her hunter horse, C Sir Madre, in PB Hunter JOTR & JTR 14-17. Top Tens in the JOTR and JTR classes also went to: Brandon Leubner and Mista Poco Mon in HA Western JTR 14-17; Mackenzie Leubner and Rather Be Red in HA Costume JTR; Isobelle Ehret and Sweet Alligcations in PB Hunter JTR 14-17; Kenneth McDonald and Bargellos Razoul (owned by Ernest Patterson) in HA Geldings 3 & Under JTH; and to Jessica Passey with Hal Firee in PB Hunter JTR 14-17 and with TR Tequila Sunrise in HA Hunter JOTR 14-17. Along with our seasoned horse and rider combinations competing at Scottsdale, some new faces have burst onto the scene and literally stolen the show. Topping the “one to watch” list, Bryan and Joanne Grossman’s Black Daniels (IXL Noble Express x Victoria Bay) made a clean sweep of his classes, capturing both the English

Pleasure Junior Horse qualifier and the Championship final. With Jimmy Stachowski in the irons, this powerhouse stallion had everyone in the stands cheering and it was Canadians who were cheering the loudest. Without a doubt, this is one of the most exciting English horses we’ve seen in a long time… and yes, he’s purebred! Also making her Scottsdale debut, Pomeroy Arabians’ Chanel V (Ballience V x Crystal Lace) won 1st in the PB Country Limit Horse with Chris Culbreth and went on to earn Top Ten in the PB Country Open later in the week. Not to be outdone by the English division, Canada’s up-andcoming Western horses are proving themselves to be top notch contenders. The winning combination of Tommy Garland and Dancin To Victory (RSD Dark Victory x Talons Pride), owned by Barbara Lynn Hunt, were unbeatable in the PB Western Pleasure Junior Horse. In the SSS Yearling PB Fillies ATH Championship, Laura Friesen and Isabella WA (Sir Fames HBV x Tatiana WA) bested fifty-four rival competitors, claiming a well-earned 4th overall in the Top Ten. Ashley Toye and Laura Wolsey both had great success again at this year’s show. Among the numerous ribbons, Ashley and Chance to Jam won the HA Hunter AAOTR 18-35 Championship while Laura and O Lordy were Champions in PB Hunter Pleasure AAOTR 18-35, Reserve in English Side Saddle and Top Ten in PB Hunter AATR 18-39 and Open. At the close of the show, Ashley was named Champion Scottsdale High Point Amateur and Chance To Jam was the Reserve Champion High Point HA Gelding. Laura’s gelding, O Lordy, was Reserve Champion High Point Purebred. In Western Pleasure, Sandra Daniels and Courage Under Fire, fresh off of their double Canadian National Championships, added a Top Ten in the HA Western AATR 40 & Over to their trophy case. Top Ten honours also went to Diane Pretty and DBA Pinpal in the HA Western AATR 40 & Over. Earlier in the week this pair placed 1st and 2nd in their sections of HA Western AAOTR 36-54 and AATR 40 & Over. HA English Open saw Top Tens awarded to Todd Ehret and Queen Of Soul, for owner Sherry Dobrescu, and to Jacquie Hugill-Girard aboard her gelding Concorde. After being taken out by a wild cow, trainer Gord Hester had to depend on fellow competitors to ride his horses (see story p. 21). But it turned out well in the end – Championship roses went to Nadine and Kevin Cusack’s KC Rain N Fire in PB Working Cow Horse Hack/Snaffle, and a Top Ten went to Lasa Ruff Joker, owned by Linda Broderson, in the HA Working Cow Horse H/S. Raffs Swiss Mocha came home with two Top Tens in the HA Reining, with LaRae Fletcher Powell at the helm in the Open and with owner Rene Padgham in the AAOTR 45 & Over. Also taking Top Ten in the AAOTR 45 & Over was Velda Peach aboard UTCS Pep N’Hot. Velda was an impressive 3rd out of 27 in the HA Reining Open aboard her other entry, Freckles Got Trix. Jim Anderson was Top Ten aboard Delwoods Rosie in the PB Reining Open and placed 7th in the HA Reining Futurity Classic on Delwoods Jude for owner Robert Wedel. In the Sport Horse ring, Soleya and Todd Ehret secured the Championship roses in HA SH Under Saddle and were named Supreme Champion HA SH In-Hand Hunter Type in the Open. Lacey Whittingham and Pridesprecious Moment followed suit and earned the Supreme Championship in HA SH In-Hand Hunter Type ATH. The final Saturday evening of the show opened in the Equidome with the Gamblers Choice Jumpers. This is always an exciting class to watch, but even more-so this year as Canadian Debbie Adolphson aboard Aftershade qualified for the final and took home Top Ten honours. Debbie, along with daughters Dana and Sarah, enjoyed a very successful ten days in Sport Horse, Dressage and Jumping with their entries Aftershade, Shakeel Khaleel and Blu By You.

D A N C I N’ T O A SCOTTSDALE VICTORY

BY CH R ISTI NA W EESE

Stories like this always seem to start with a pony in the backyard.

“When I was growing up, we always had a pony in the back yard,” says Lynn Hunt. “So when our daughter Natalie was born, her grandpa bought her a pony – and as fate would have it, she really took to it.” When she was six years old, Natalie attended a local riding camp. Loving the atmosphere, she continued riding at Carolyn Carberry’s Marlow Farms for the next fifteen years. And, although she started out in the local hunter/jumper rings, by age thirteen Natalie had decided that she wanted to show Arabians. The Hunts became well-known on the Ontario circuit, first with Bossa Nova+// in HA Country English Pleasure, Native Costume and Show Hack (winning a Top Ten at Canadian Nationals), and later with Jeweliette+/ in HA Western Pleasure and Western Sidesaddle (winning a Canadian and a US Reserve National Championship). But at the end of 2007 they made a major decision that’s taken their family activity in a whole new direction. “We started training with Tommy Garland at the beginning of 2008,” says Lynn. “Natalie had tried riding with a bosal in the amateur horse classes and really liked it, so that became our focus.” It was a big commitment. Lynn and Natalie try to do the 11hour drive to Tommy’s training facility in Virginia once a month. Lynn and her husband Bob own a construction company just north of Toronto, and Natalie, who works as a nurse, is able to take advantage of having four days off in a row. The first horse Lynn purchased under Tommy’s guidance was the young stallion JF Verrisk+ (Versace x FS Risque by Padrons Psyche), in August, 2008. “We laughed,” says Lynn, “because I always said I’d never have a stallion. But he’s a real pet; he always comes and greets you in his stall. He’s a really nice guy. During last year’s show season we went everywhere with him.” In 2009, Natalie and “Vern” were undefeated in the bosal, earning Championships in Western Pleasure AO at Region 15, AO and AT at Region 16, and the AAO Maturity at US Nationals. With Tommy Garland and Dancin to Victory, Purebred Western Pleasure Jr Horse Champions trainer Tommy Garland, Vern picked up a US National Championship and a Canadian Reserve Championship in Western Pleasure Jr Horse.

Not only is Lynn the owner of one stallion, but with the purchase of Dancin to Victory (RSD Dark Victory x Talon’s Pride by Xtalon) just before Scottsdale, she now owns two. Although it was too late for Natalie to enter any of the amateur classes, she did fly down to watch Tommy show “Vic” in the open classes. And boy was it worth it. Dancin to Victory won both his Western Pleasure Jr Horse qualifier, and the Scottsdale Championship. “I’ve trained Vic since he was a three-year-old,” says Tommy. “We showed him at the US Nationals Futurity in 2008, though he wasn’t quite as finished as he could have been and we ended up 3rd. But by Region 16 in 2009 he was unanimous Champion Jr Horse; he just kept getting better and better.” Vic’s also become somewhat famous, thanks to Tommy’s article in the April 2010 Horse & Rider. In the article and accompanying online video, Tommy demonstrates the benefits of using a horsesized ball as part of your training toolkit. He says that one of the benefits of these types of “how-to” articles, along with his training videos and in-person appearances at various equine expos, has been to expose today’s Arabian breed to a wider audience. “I went to an expo in Ohio, and did some clinics. And we realized, there’s something like 100,000 people come through there in four days. I was just shocked. So I started watching the trainers, saw a bit of a void that we thought we could fill.” Tommy’s demonstrations and videos have been growing ever since – five new DVD’s will

be making their debut at Equine Affaire in Ohio, and it’s all good news for the Arabian breed. “We bring National Champions to the demonstrations,” says Tommy. “People say, wow, that’s a big horse! They seem to think all Arabs are tiny little grey horses – and crazy, right? – but when they see what these horses can do, it changes their opinion of the whole thing. Which has been fun – to get people to think differently. I’ve done a lot of that in the last four years or so, to try and promote the Arabian outside of our little group of people.” Dancin to Victory did a bit of Arabian ambassador work himself in Scottsdale, right at the show. When talking to Horse & Rider’s Editor-in-Chief Juli S. Thorson, Tommy found out that one of her ‘bucket list’ items was to ride an Arabian Western Pleasure horse. So, he offered to make it happen. “We came out of the ring after Vic won the Championship,” says Tommy, “and he had the roses still on – I told her to get on and go for a ride.” “I thought I would be riding someone’s nice, amateur western pleasure gelding, the kind anyone could ride,” says Juli. “I never dreamed I’d get to ride one of the show’s superstars in the open division like I did!” In writing about the experience on her blog, Juli mentioned that Vic felt like “a Cadillac wearing a saddle.” “I’ve shown western pleasure in the traditional stock horse breeds ever since I was 5 years old, and competed at a high level,”

she explains. “I know what that kind of a horse feels like and what’s expected of it – so I thought it would be neat to try out this discipline that I’m so familiar with, on a completely different breed. “I felt very comfortable. Vic was extremely responsive to the leg and in the bridle (ie hackamore), very well trained. There’s definitely a different feel between Arabs and the traditional stock horse breeds – Arabs are more compact; you don’t have as much to compress, collect and control. It felt effortless to me.” Efforts such as Tommy’s, and Scottsdale’s NRHAsanctioned Arabian Reining Futurity, are slowly bringing Arabians to the attention of the rest of the stock horse world. “I don’t know the numbers,” Juli comments, “but I do know that on the last two or three occasions I’ve been to Scottsdale, when I look around I see a growing number of people from the traditional QH/Paint horse world who are either watching, judging, or coaching someone – and that’s a relatively new phenomenon, for them to come to the Arabian world.” Let’s hope it’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Scottsdale 2010 was a dream come true for me. I had been going to the Scottsdale show for many years, but always as an observer. This year was different – I was headed to Scottsdale with my horse, Lasa Ruff Joker (Pepsi), whom I’d raised from a baby, and her trainers, Sandy and Gord Hester of SR Horse Training. The weather was beautiful for the first part of the show. But the day of the Working Cow Horse competition, the big black clouds came, and the sunny weather turned to pouring rain. The class was cancelled because of the footing in the outdoor pen, and moved under a tarped pen for the next day. Pepsi and Gord performed well in the qualifying class, but near the end of the class, a wreck happened and the cow, horse and rider all ended up laying in the dirt. “The cows this year were really wild,” says Sandy Hester. “This one just decided to go straight back to the herd, and Gord and Pepsi happened to be in the way.” Gord did manage to get Pepsi qualified for the Championship class, but was unable to ride due to his injuries – several broken ribs and a badly dislocated shoulder. Luckily the Working Cow Horse trainers stepped up to fill Gord’s shoes. Sandy asked Jeffery Wilms if he could help us out, and even though he was already riding another horse in the Championship class, he agreed to ride Pepsi as well. I was happy, but worried about a few things. I didn’t know if Pepsi had been traumatized by the bad cow taking her out in the first class, I didn’t know how Pepsi would perform with a stranger on her back, and I was hoping for a better cow this time – things were looking a little too wild, wild west for me! When Pepsi’s class came, I could hardly watch. Pepsi and Jeffery walked into the ring as if they had always been a team. Pepsi worked as steady and calm as she always does, pulling a 3rd place win. The Reserve Champion’s score was only one point higher than Pepsi’s. I’d like to thank Sandy for giving Pepsi her a solid start, and Gord for finishing Pepsi as a Working Western horse, and Jeffery for coming through so nicely for us. - Linda Broderson

You’ve had a busy year since the last Scottsdale show in 2009. What have some of the highlights been? Well, out of the five regional shows I was lucky enough to compete at in 2009, my favourite was Region 2 in Santa Barbara. I was exciting to go somewhere new, and that area of California was breathtaking. Jessica Passey and I spent a day on the beach that rivalled an episode of the O.C.! Plus a big group of us drove out to Ventura Farms one afternoon – a place I’ll never forget. Another highlight would have to be finally breaking my third place tradition by taking home the Reserve Champion roses from Canadian Nationals on C Sir Madre++++// in August. Tell us about your horses, C Sir Madre+++// and Winning Afire+//.

Conley Driediger and Winning Afire+//.

Equine Canada has named Conley Driediger, 17, of Chilliwack, BC, the 2009 Junior Equestrian of the Year. The Gillian Wilson Award is given annually in recognition of a junior competitor who has made outstanding contributions to equestrian competition and has exemplified exceptional talent, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport. Conley, a grade 12 student, has been involved in the Arabian horse community for her entire life. In 2009, Conley was ranked number one Overall High Point Youth Competitor, of both Canada and the US, by the Arabian Horse Association with an impressive total of 485.5 points. Conley achieved her success in the show ring while maintaining her high academic status on her high school’s honour roll with a GPA of 88.65 and volunteering on a number of initiatives such as Global Education Group, her local Arabian club, and the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up.

Madre and Cade are pretty much the loves of my life. I am really lucky to have horses that work as hard and enjoy competition as much as I do. I find that anything I ask, they will try, and I think their honesty is what makes us so competitive. I always knew I wanted a chestnut with tons of chrome, and that I would never ride hunter because it was just plain boring. Somehow, fate gave me two bays with hardly any white – and I’ve been riding hunter for going on four years! I wouldn’t trade them for the fanciest two chestnuts money could buy. Where are you at in school right now, and what are your plans for after high school? I am halfway through grade twelve, and what a stressful year it has already been! Scholarship applications, advanced English and Psychology, and my volunteer work have pretty much kept me running around in circles, but I am enjoying it. I managed to once again skip the three weeks for Scottsdale and started off 2010 with a fantastic show (luckily academics are a strength), but I am taking it easy for the next two months until we hopefully head back to Santa Barbara in June. Youth Nationals is also a goal this summer, as it is my last year as a junior, and showing there in 2007 remains one of my most memorable trips. I will be entering university and pursuing my Bachelor degree in Business and Administration this fall, and I won’t be transferring to Vancouver for at least another year, so hopefully this will let me continue to show.
