Barn News & Letters... JOIN US AT SPRUCE MEADOWS

Sept. 9-13, 2009 • Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta Cheer on Team Arabian in the TELUS Battle of the Breeds at this year’s Spruce Meadows Masters! The Masters is a celebration of everything equestrian, from miniatures to mules to international-level show jumping. Arabians will be represented with a booth at the Breeds for the Worlds exhibit, as well as competing in Compulsories, Jeopardy Jumping, Barrels, Precision Driving, and Trail in the Battle of the Breeds. Don’t miss it!! Magritta Ben-Oliel wrote in to share a story about a night she spent in the barn with her ten-year-old black Arabian gelding, Kashmir. After a morning ride in May, Kashmir started showing signs of colic. A colic specialist in Vancouver was unavailable for them to travel to, so Magritta’s vet, Dr. Tino Martinez, advised that Kashmir be kept on his feet and checked hourly, all night long. Luckily by evening he was looking better, but nevertheless Magritta settled in to spend the night in Kashmir’s walk-out stall with a sleeping bag and an alarm clock. She was then amazed to watch her horse stand directly over her, and, with his tongue sticking straight out and all his teeth showing in a grin, slowly move his head from her middle, up to her head, all the way down to her feet, and back up to her belly button. Though Kashmir often rolls back his lips to give kisses, Magritta was at a loss as to what this new behavior meant! “I hope you find this as fascinating and magical as I do. And I wonder if any of your readers have had a similar experience?” she writes. Cassiosum Acres Arabians is proud to announce the arrival of our purebred filly CA Primetime Promises Kept, aka “Lexi” (Prime Time SCA x MS Elise) born May 30th, 2009. Also we are pleased to announce the acquisition of LM Gharibah (Nihal GRSB x EH Ghorees), 1996 Straight Egyptian mare. She has been bred to our stallion Prime Time SCA for 2010. - Susanne Stefaniuk, Cassiosum Acres Arabians, Markdale, ON Olivia Corinne Wilson was born on June 20th, 2009. Congratulations to Dr. Steve and Cori Wilson! “Thank you so very much for the lovely certificate for the High Scoring Canadian Partbred Arabian during the Amberlea Meadows Summer Dressage Festival! This was the first sanctioned show that my partbred, Texs Breeze (PA Texs Sunshine) and I took part in. “Freddy” was bred by Tony & Karen Bourdages in Bashaw AB and I was lucky enough to purchase him in August 2006. We have also taken part in our first recognized show of the year with fantastic results. We entered in 7 classes and received ribbons in 6 of them – one 1st place, one 2nd place, two 3rd’s and two 4th’s with scores ranging from 60.400 to 65.357% in Training Level. We also received a 74.00% in Dressage Seat Equitation - Adult Amateur. Freddy is very talented for dressage and I cannot wait until we can move on up through the levels.” - Paula Meehan

Artist Janice Carr Dua has recently finished two paintings featuring Canadian Arabians – Heart and Soul, a 30" x 40" oil/gold leaf and mixed media on canvas, features Dare to Dream Farm’s FSF Jesse James (above). As well, Len and Tracy Burns of Fine Touch Arabians commissioned Supreme, an original portrait of their two stallions, Supreme and Ibn Ben Malik (see ad, p. 30). You can see more of Janice’s work on her website, www.janicecua.com. The original Heart and Soul is available for purchase.

Dana Leadbetter ended up with a “two-for-one” surprise when she leased the part-bred mare Sarahnade from Bob Sproule of Salisbury Farms. Dana, who works for Herbers Veterinary Service in Sherwood Park AB, says, “Yes, the mare was ultrasounded and only one embryo was seen! Ten years in the vet clinic and you know twins just don’t happen this way – happy, healthy, and strong from the get go. “They will both be registered and IAHA nicely (Sweepstakes) nominates the second foal at no charge. The smaller colt is black and his pending name is Twin Cyty. The larger colt is bay and his pending registered name is A Tale Of Two Cytys. They were born on April 26 and of course their daddy is Cyty Heat. Time will tell what they will become as far as size and discipline but no matter what, they are two incredible little miracles! It has been an incredible experience for all of us!”

Barn News & Letters continued...

News from... the Saskatchewan Arabian Horse Association Well, it seems that warmer weather is upon us, and for SAHA members that means some opportunities to enjoy camraderie with members and their horses. On May 28/09, SAHA held a trail ride in the beautiful Qu’appelle Valley. It was a sunny spring day with approximately 25 riders with Arabians and other breeds participating. The ride covered some ten miles of varied terrain and scenery. The day ended with a hotdog supper and all the fix’ins at the home of member Lorelei Cornell. Following the success of this ride, another is being planned for the fall. On May 30 and 31/09 SAHA held Arabians and friends on the SAHA trail ride. a Reining and Western Pleasure clinic. Lastly, I am including a member submission from Deanna Lyke re: the breeding of colored part-bred Arabians. Allison Rain 306-693-5729, connet@sasktel.net Saskatchewan breeder Dee-Anna Lyke had the following comments on their 2009 foal, Misty: “Eight years ago, I purchased a young stallion who was a great-grandson of the legendary Khemosabi from George and Dorris Husband of Wawota, SK. It did not take me long to realize what Khaacey’s destiny was, he wanted to be a cowhorse! After carefully researching Appaloosa working cowhorse bloodlines and coat pattern genetics, we purchased an Appaloosa, High Misty Sage (High Noon) to breed to Ace. This spring we got to see the results. As breeders, we have only those very few instances where we get exactly what we want, but sometimes we do!”

16 Canadian Arabian Horse News

T

hese past few months, conversations regarding the future

hosting of the Western and Eastern Canadian Breeders Championships have led to some interesting suggestions. People have asked us: why do we have to follow the rules of AHA for a Canadian Breeders Championship; why doesn’t CAHR run the show themselves; why do clubs get to keep all the money for hosting the ECB and WCB shows when AHA keeps the money from the national events they offer? These members also want to know how we can make the Breeders Championships the most important shows for Canadian exhibitors to attend. These questions were right on target as several of us on the Breeders Championship committee have been pondering the same things. The Registry has often been criticized because other than Regional and Breeders’ Sponsorships we do not do very much to promote the Arabian breed here in Canada or the Canadian-bred Arabian abroad. The problem is of course lack of funds. The reason for that lack of funds is that our association does only one thing and that is, we register horses. If you look at an organization like the Arabian Horse Association’s (AHA’s) financial report, you can see that they rely on competitive memberships and National show entry fees to provide much of the income that allows them to operate. CAHR is in a rather unique position. All of our breed’s competitive money goes to AHA or Equine Canada rather than to us – the organization that is supposed to be promoting the breed in this country. Because of our breed’s show structure, everyone is tied into the Class A system offered by AHA and thus we have no way to garner income from shows. The discipline our breed is most known for – Endurance

– also has its own international organization that their competition dollars support. Perhaps the Registry should have been developing a competitive system for Canadians decades ago, rather than relying on the IAHA to provide those venues. But the attitude of the board at that time was that we register horses and we were not in the competition game. Today, our breed is so entrenched in the AHA system, that it would be a very difficult row to hoe if we were to try and develop our own show circuit. The value of our horses and our trainers is for the most part directly related to their potential and success in the AHA system. With that in mind, we need to develop another source of revenue besides registrations and membership fees if we are ever to honour the goal of our organization to promote the Arabian breed. As we move forward, we will need to visit the suggestions that have been brought forward by those members who want to see CAHR succeed. I invite you to attend the Annual General Meeting on August 22nd if you are in Regina at the Royal Red and share in the discussions regarding the future direction of our Registry. In closing I would like to thank all those members who have taken the time to provide feedback and suggestions to our board members and staff. It is rewarding to know that so many of you care about the future of the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry. Thank you! Sincerely,

Marcia Friesen, CAHR President Oakville, MB

nine months, the sun is still coming up in the horizon, the rivers are still flowing and the world is still spinning on its axis! Including the Arabian Horse Business! Even though we have all been scared to read the next headline for fear of more bad news, it appears in my humble opinion that in many parts of Canada, the reality is that we are just returning to a state of “normalcy. The problem lies in that we are trying to define what normal is again. From an economic standpoint, most of North America has been racing at breakneck speed for so many years that trying to find that equilibrium is a challenge. Real estate, labour, fuel and raw materials skyrocketed to unforeseen levels throughout North America over the past few years. I guess you could say at some point there was nowhere to go but down. This downturn or readjustment (as I like to call it) is refocusing everyone’s efforts and resources into areas that they see value in. That is why advertising and promotion are critical to the success of the horse business in general. A great barometer of our industry as a whole was the 2009 Scottsdale Show. Many feared the show would suffer horribly due to the economic plight facing the World, but thankfully it drew great numbers. Entries were down, but only slightly over previous years. Perhaps the show ground was devoid of the stories of horses selling three and four times before the show for hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, but in reality... how many people were really participating in that market anyway? Sales of great horses for fair dollar figures were reported from many farms. While the news of daily economic turmoil seems to continue, although at a much slower pace, I feel things are slowly reaching that state of normalcy again. Here at the “NEWS in the thick of the downturn, we printed an April “newsletter that resembled a magazine with nearly 40 pages. We were stunned with the response and it certainly was pleasant surprise considering we envisioned the newsletter to be 8-12 pages. In this issue we have again spotlighted two very respected longtime

Tex Kam at Janow Podlaski with *Ganges (*Monogramm x Garonna), US Nat Res Ch Senior Stallion and Polish Nat Ch Stallion

breeders. In the East we feature Rideaufield Farms of Ontario and in the West we feature Oddy’s Skyline Arabians of British Columbia. These two farms have a long-standing history and have been ardent supporters of the Arabian horse in Canada for several decades. This issue also features Part II of my journey to the Polish State studs. Also due to time constraints, I personally ran out of time to get you Part II of the Nationals Photography article. Respected Arabian photographers Scott Trees and Stuart Vesty have agreed to comment on this contentious issue. We want to ensure all sides of the story are heard, so hopefully can get it ready for publication in the next issue. Great news – the CAHR and the News will be sending Nicole Toren to the Royal Winter Fair for a couple days in November. We will have advertising specials for our Region 18 readers, so please come to the Fair and meet us. We would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions for the magazine and registry. This issue is our Canadian Nationals issue and we certainly wish all competitors from across North America good luck. Thanks again for everyone’s support as our team strives to make each issue better than the last. And as usual, until then, I remain surrounded by everything Arabian.

Left to right Peppermint Paddy RF+++/ (Earl Grey++ x Comin Up Roses [Three-B Rasheik++]), with Leslie Lloyd up; Terry Ekdahl and Janie Greenberg.

By Elaine Kenney & Janie Greenberg Janie Greenberg’s introduction to the world of horses came at a young age when she fashioned her first stick horses, then trotted and cantered them down the streets of suburban Toronto. Quite an inauspicious beginning to what would become a thirty-five-year involvement of dedication and love for the Arabian Breed. Toronto was not quite the place for horse ownership for a horse loving child, however going to university in a small town in Georgia enabled Janie to rent and subsequently purchase her first horse, a grade mare called Velvet. When Janie’s and her then-husband’s student visas ran out they returned to Ottawa, Ontario with a truck full of tropical fish, three dogs and five cats, as their interests had become focused on the pet shop business. The next trip back to the U.S. was to pick up Velvet, in foal to an Arabian stallion, as well as Janie’s first purebred Arabian gelding. canadian nationals August 2009 19

NV MASIRA SHANTU++ Fate often intervenes at the beginning of a story and has a way of influencing everything that follows. When Janie travelled to her first Arabian show, Scottsdale, in 1975, she fell in love with the winner of the three-year-old colt class – the grey Amurath Borodino (*Ramses Fayek x Amurath Kashmira), owned by Plum Grove Farm. That spring, with a two-horse trailer in tow, she made the long trek to Chicago to take her first Arabian mare, Shamzahra, to be bred to Amurath Borodino. That trip forever influenced the breeding program at Rideaufield Farms. Plum Grove’s premier breeding stallion at that time was *Ramses Fayek, a Nazeer son imported from Egypt. Janie explains, “He was and probably still is my all-time favourite Arabian stallion. He made a huge impact on me, just to see him standing in his stall. He was not only beautiful with correct conformation, but he had a quality of coat, a huge eye, beautiful clean flat bone and an overall look that was incomparable in my mind.” Shortly after her trip to Plum Grove, Amurath Elan (*Ramses Fayek x Amurath Czarina) came to Rideaufield Farms. What an undertaking for a person unfamiliar with handling a stallion! “I was terrified of Elan at first,” recounts Janie, “but he taught me much about handling, breeding and generally dealing with stallions. He turned out to be a wonderful horse. He was Junior Champion Stallion at his (and our) first show ever in Syracuse, New York in 1976 and then Region 18 Reserve Champion Stallion as a two-year-old, that same year.” 20 Canadian Arabian Horse News

Eventually it came time to find a horse to breed to the Amurath Elan daughters. After a year of searching, Janie flew to Northern Minnesota to see a horse she knew little about, but which came highly recommended to her by her mentor, Gene Reichardt. Janie loved the look of Three-B Rasheik++ (Amurath Rashid+ x Dakeema), nicknamed Red, even though he had done no work for about a year and was not in show condition. That evening Red’s then-owner phoned and filled Janie in on his show record. He had been Buckeye Champion Stallion in 1980, Champion Stallion at The Great Arabian Get Together in Minnesota and also had won other major halter championships. Three-B Rasheik++ came home to Rideaufield Farms in 1981, and became the horse of Janie’s dreams. He earned his Legion of Merit in four shows, was Canadian National Top Ten Stallion and was for many years the only Canadian-owned (and not syndicated!) horse who was an IAHA Top Ten Overall Juvenile Sweepstakes Sire. Red was always a “small breeder’s” stallion, making many people’s dreams come true. Still today, people treasure their Red babies, horses who have been consummate show horses, great breeding horses and many people’s most treasured lifelong companions. The death of Three-B Rasheik++ in 1994 was a heartbreak for Janie. She had just purchased the current home of Rideaufield Farms in Merrickville, Ontario, and was so looking forward to seeing Red enjoy his senior years there. It was not to be. However, it was “Red” who brought Terry Ekdahl and Janie Greenberg together. They first met at Rideaufield Farms in 1988

at one of Janie’s “Garden Parties,” an annual open house that she held for twenty years to showcase her Arabian horses and breeding program. Her horses were shown to music and many non-horse people would come out to visit and admire the horses. Terry became enamoured with the stallion, returning to the farm to take photographs for a planned sculpture. He soon became enamoured with Janie and the sculpture remains a work-inprogress! Today, Terry is Janie’s partner and an integral part of Rideaufield Farms, taking part in all aspects of running it, from feeding the horses to turnout, breeding, putting out the hay, advertising, photography, maintaining the website and general handyman. Both Janie and Terry are totally “hands on” when it comes to caring for the horses and running Rideaufield Farms. Janie became involved in the early days of the National Show Horse Registry and purchased a Saddlebred stallion, Romantic Contract, for her breeding program. When the direction of her program moved away from the National Show Horses, Romantic Contract was sold to Australia. His sale paved the way for Janie’s purchase of Amurath Baikal (*Bask++ x *Sanacht), a horse she had seen at Plum Grove as a yearling when she purchased Amurath Elan. Janie had always admired Amurath Baikal. She was at the U.S. Nationals when he was named U.S. Reserve National Champion Futurity Colt. “Baikal hugely influenced our breeding program,” says Janie, “he was a beautiful, kind horse and very much the Gladys Brown Edwards kind of Arabian. Amurath Baikal left us with many beautiful offspring, very much the con-

KHEYMILLA

tinuation of our breeding program today.” Most notable are Earl Grey++ and Simply The Best, both sired by Amurath Baikal and out of the beautiful and talented Bey Shah+ daughter, NV Masira. Simply The Best was Region 16 Champion Mare at age three. She is currently on lease to Tim and Marty Shea of Shea Stables in Michigan, and this year produced a chestnut colt by Afire Bey V. Janie and Terry consider Earl Grey++ to be the ideal beautiful Arabian. He was a U.S. Top Ten Futurity Colt in 2001, a Regional Halter Champion and Eastern Canadian Breeders Champion Stallion. In 2008, his first year under saddle, he was Region 16 Hunter Pleasure Champion AATR 18-39. He has also earned his Legion of Merit award. Most notably of Earl Grey++’s get, Peppermint Paddy RF+++/ earned her Legion of Supreme Merit/Honor as a six-year-old, based on her significant halter and performance wins – Regional and Eastern Canadian Breeders (ECB) Championships in HA Halter, Open and AOTH, multiple ECB Championships in Hunter Pleasure, and multiple Regional wins in HA Hunter Jr Horse, Sport Horse Under Saddle and In-Hand. Xceptshahn (Bey Shah+ x RSD Khaptivation), a 1991 stallion, has been in residence at Rideaufield Farms since 1996. Xceptshahn was owned by Georges Forest of Quebec, Canada, and born at Mark White Arabians in California, the home of his sire. Dr. Gilles St-Pierre of Rimouski, QC purchased Xceptshahn and a group of five extremely well-bred mares from Mr. Forest when he decided to sell Bey Shah+ and disperse his breeding canadian nationals August 2009 21

herd. Xceptshahn made the move from California to Quebec as a yearling. As a three-year-old he came under the tutelage of Bruno Lapointe – it was at Bruno’s that Janie and Terry first saw him. Janie says, “He made a lasting impression on us with his size, quality, length of leg and extreme agility. We were impressed as well with his beautifully tight coupled body and lovely shape of neck. He also had an air about him and a complete dominance of everything around him that was impossible not to notice. In retrospect, these are the qualities that he consistently puts on his foals and makes of them such outstanding show horses.” “When the opportunity arose for us to purchase a part interest in him,” continues Janie, “we jumped at it, and more recently acquired him outright. Xceptshahn’s personality is brimming with enthusiasm and that can sometimes be misunderstood by those who see him! He loves to leap and cavort, to snort and blow; however, the private Xceptshahn is a gentle, thoughtful horse who is wonderful to be around. He really enjoys the reflective moments before turnout when Terry puts his nose to Xceptshahn‘s and they both reverentially listen to the sound of each other’s breathing. This personality is consistently passed on. His babies are not only beautiful, but they are thoughtful and intelligent, extremely athletic and are able to excel at both halter and performance.” Xceptshahn has had an indelible effect on the success of Rideaufield Farms, producing show horses such as Sir Royal Bey Montana+++/, Pretty Woman+, The Xceptshahnell Rose RF++, and Atiah Zafar, to name a few. In 2004, at age 21, the wonderful old *Padron son Pomerol ( x *Poviest) came to Rideaufield Farms. Although most of the Pomerol babies have been sold, Rideaufield hopes to campaign some of his youngsters in the future. In the early years at Rideaufield Farms and up until a few years ago, Janie’s enthusiasm for the beauty and spirit of the Arabian led her to breed horses that were suited for, and have done exceptionally well, in halter classes. Her eye for strength of conformation served her well for this focus. At that time, most of these youngsters were usually sold by the time they were ready to begin training; thus there was less emphasis on showing under saddle or for performance. Today, the heart of Rideaufield’s breeding program is the belief in “form to function.” Both Janie and Terry strongly believe that correct conformation should enable a horse to do well at performance. To walk the talk, they have set out in the last three show seasons to prove this objective, and are succeeding at it. Their breeding horses, past halter champions, are now showing their ability under saddle and are winning Regional Championships as performance horses. For the time being at least, showing horses at halter is taking a back seat to showing under saddle. From the world of make-believe with stick horses in suburban Toronto, to the reality of Rideaufield Farms, Janie and Terry continue to evolve their farm operation and breeding program. It has produced many outstanding Arabians, much-loved by their owners, successful in both halter and performance classes. “What we hope is most evident when people come to visit Rideaufield Farms,” says Janie, “is a very consistent group of beautiful Arabian horses, a quality of horse that is appreciated not only by lovers of the Arabian breed but admired by horse breeders and horse lovers in general. One only needs to walk the barns and fields at Rideaufield Farms to understand the love and care that has gone into raising these horses.”

S

ince the news broke in late 2008 that a number of stallions

in the U.S. had tested positive for contagious equine metritis (CEM), Canadian authorities have been on high alert. The U.S. investigation revealed that shipments of frozen semen from stallions either positive for CEM or associated with quarantined premises had been sent to Canada. If a country loses its CEM-free status, there are international trade implications. To limit Canada’s exposure, revised import restrictions for all live horses, semen and embryos entering Canada from the U.S. were put in place in early 2009. As a result of the expanding investigation into CEM, 18 stallions and five mares in the U.S. have been confirmed as positive for T. equigenitalis. None of the positive horses have yet to be identified as the source of the outbreak. Under investigation are an additional 135 exposed or positive stallions in 21 States and 638 exposed or positive mares in 45 States who are currently undergoing testing. CEM is a highly contagious venereal disease, caused by the bacteria Taylorella equigenitalis, and is a reportable disease in Canada. It is spread by live cover, infected semen during artificial insemination, or introduced to the genital tract on fomites, and the transmission rate is extremely high. Stallions are the most common source of infection with T. equigenitalis, persisting for months or years on the reproductive tract of untreated stallions. Mares can carry the organism without symptoms, after recovering from acute disease. Most infected mares do not conceive but those that do may give birth to a normal full-term foal that can carry the organism asymptomatically. Nearly every mare mated to an infected stallion will become infected. Most mares recover after treatment by washing the external genitalia with disinfectants combined with a local antibiotic treatment but some become asymptomatic carriers. On April 29, 2009, Equine Canada notified the Canadian industry that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) had announced that an alternative procedure for the importation of fresh equine semen from the United States into Canada is in place following an official United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) mandate to all of its regional offices. This now provides Canadian importers of fresh (chilled) semen from the U.S. with two possible procedures for processing the required export/import documentation—the “Standard Procedure”, which has been in effect since January 30, 2009, and the new “Alternative Procedure” which was then announced by CFIA. Both procedures are outlined below.

With both procedures, exporters in the U.S. are still required to send (or present) the original U.S. Origin Health Certificate to the USDA for endorsement. Once endorsed, the Alternative Procedure allows for the USDA to fax U.S. Origin Health Certificates to the CFIA where they will be matched against copies of non-endorsed U.S. Origin Health Certificates accompanying fresh semen shipments to the Canadian port-of-entry. This option only applies to fresh equine semen, which begins to lose its viability 24 hours after it is collected. The importation of frozen equine semen and embryos from the United States must continue to follow the procedure put in place on January 30, 2009 (see details below). Importers using this Alternative Procedure for the importation of fresh semen into Canada will be charged $35 for each shipment for document verification by the CFIA. The importer will need a CFIA client account or credit card on file at the CFIA. This Alternative Procedure will enable suppliers that are remote from USDA endorsing area offices to ship fresh semen upon collection to the Canadian border while simultaneously sending the original health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian to the USDA for endorsement. However, courier companies or any other transporters shipping fresh semen to the border without a USDA-endorsed health certificate must be informed that the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) will refer them to the CFIA for inspection and document verification. Canadians seeking timely information regarding import requirements are advised to use the CFIA’s Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) at http://airs-sari.inspection.gc.ca/Airs_ External/Default.aspx.

or fresh semen or embryos and inform them that a USDAendorsed zoosanitary export certificate (i.e., U.S. Origin Health Certificate) is required.

8. Upon receipt of a faxed copy of the endorsed zoosanitary export certificate from the USDA, the CFIA will compare it against the non-endorsed copy accompanying the shipment. The importer will be charged $35 for document verification.

3. To obtain the required certificate, please visit: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/vs/iregs/animals/ downloads/ca_eq_se.pdf

9. Once verification is completed and the shipment is determined to be compliant, it will be allowed to enter Canada. 10. If the CFIA does not receive a faxed copy of the endorsed zoosanitary export certificate, or there are discrepancies with the certificate, the shipment will be ordered removed from Canada. Importers are advised that once the USDA endorses each U.S. Origin Health Certificate, it is returned to the exporter. Importers must obtain the endorsed originals from exporters and keep them on file at the importers’ premises for ten (10) years. CFIA inspectors may ask to examine these documents at any time. Canadian importers are reminded that the existing procedure (the “Standard Procedure” outlined below) that has been in effect since January 30, 2009, is still an option for importing fresh (chilled) equine semen from the U.S.

e v o L r e t a e r No G Left to right Ken, Janet, Bud, Kristi, Peter

By Jean Berg & Christina Weese

Since 1956

After 53 years of breeding Arabian horses, Janet and Bud Oddy are retiring. One remain-

ing mare and yearling foal frolic in the pastures of Oddy’s Skyline Arabians, ‘for sale to a good home.’ Though she’s not quite sure what she’ll do without the horses around, Janet says, “I’m only almost 80! I think it’s time to retire. The horses, we love them and they love us, and that will never change. So here we are trying to figure out what do next!” What to do next indeed. How Janet Oddy (née Swanson), a horse-mad girl living in the middle of Calgary, purchased her first horse, is a feat that would be quite nearly impossible to repeat today. Renting out her room during the 1942 Calgary Stampede, she made $46.00, which was more than enough to purchase “Midnight,” who moved quite happily into the family’s garage. After Midnight came “Flicka”, and at seventeen Janet sold her bedroom furniture and purchased “Scheherazade”, a grade mare who was named from Arabian Nights. Humble beginnings to be sure, but Scheherazade was bred to Margaret Tretheway’s purebred Arabian Nuri Sinbad (*Nuri Pasha x Ourida) and thus produced Janet’s first filly, Scheherazade’s Sahhar. “I moved to BC when I was 17 or 18,” says Janet, “and worked at the post office at New Westminster. I had Sheherezade shipped out here and I was riding in the field when a man rode by on a horse, and we talked, and I went home that night and said to my mother, ‘I’m going to marry that man, that Bud Oddy.’ Four years later, it happened. They were going to make a concert pianist out of me, but I sold the piano to put a down payment on a little piece of land, four and a half acres.” Those four-and-a-half acres in North Surrey, BC were the foundation of Oddy’s Skyline Arabians Ltd. canadian nationals August 2009 33

Below Janet and Bud, 1953. Janet made her own weddidng dress.

Bottom Bud Oddy riding “Chico”, owned by Vera Banner. Bud and Chico were invited to jump at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto but were unable to go that year.

Bud, whose real

name is Edwin G. Oddy, had worked at a livery stable as a youngster and jumped horses for a time. Bud built the house, barns and fences on the North Surrey property where they lived in the early 1960’s. The children, Peter, Ken and Kristi, began arriving in 1954. Over the years, as they moved to Langley in the early 1960’s, two properties in Mount Lehman in the late 1960’s and ‘70’s, and finally to Merritt in 2005, Bud (who started out as a crane operator and became a senior manager in the company) built or oversaw the construction of several houses, barns, and miles of fencelines. From a young age, Janet was born with an ultimate love and passion for horses. Bud also had a passion for horses; they met and dated with horses in the background as part of the Southlands riding community. Bud’s love for Janet was as strong as Janet’s passion for horses, making a foundation of common interest for the halfcentury of horse business that followed. In 1956, the weanling Raseyn Gezan was purchased from breeder Carleton Cummings of Moscow, Idaho, changing the lives of Bud & Janet forever. The colt’s birthday, January 27th, was shared by Bud and this was seen as a good omen. Raseyn Gezan’s pedigree is 56 ¼% Crabbet and 43 ¾% Davenport. His sire, Antezeyn Skowronek, was a son of the famed Abu Farwa (Rabiyas x *Rissletta) and out of Sharifa (Antez x Ferdith). The latter’s sire, Antez (Harara x Moliah), was iridescent chestnut and entirely Davenport. A favorite of owner W.K. Kellogg, Antez also sired Gezan (Ghazeyna [by *Raseyn]) who in turn sired Nadir (Bint Sedjur), Raseyn Gezan’s dam. times as she is also the root mare of Antez. Seglawi in strain, she lived a harsh existence with the Anezeh, bearing scars on her neck and back from Bedouin wars. As a yearling, Raseyn Gezan was robust with lots of presence and his metallic-chestnut coat and nearly white mane and tail made him stand out; with Janet at the lead, he won Grand Champion at the 1957 Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver over mature horses. By the time he was three this scene played out over and over again. At the first Armstrong Arabian Horse Show in B.C. in 1962, judge Grant MacEwan stated, “I have chosen this horse, not for his size, but for his most level top-line, his unusual muscling and loin and look, audience, at his head. It is a splendid piece of art. Here is a horse with power and heart of gold. Here is my idea of a most perfect horse, and I choose this Arabian as Premier Grand Champion of the Show.” Treasured words from a man as honest as the day is long, who eventually became the Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta. The following year at the 1963 Canadian National Show in Calgary, Raseyn Gezan won Top Ten Stallion. That year’s champion, Sir Lancer (Ga’zi x Feyn), was also an Abu Farwa grandson. Raseyn Gezan finished at 15.2 hands and from the word ‘go’ he excelled at stud. There was a long list of satisfied customers who bred to the chestnut stallion, or who bought his get for stud & hobby farms all over BC and beyond. As one of Skyline’s ads said, Raseyn Gezan “breeds to approved mares only... and he approves them all!” His firstborn purebred, a 1960 filly named Jinnyi’s Ferda (x Skowronek’s Jinnyi), was a knockout. Bred by Cummings, she immediately became Janet‘s first Arabian mare. Raseyn Gezan sired a total of 140 purebreds from 1960 to 1980, passing away in 1982 at the age of 26.

In 1971, Judy Haynes saw her very first Arabian in the flesh at Oddy’s Skyline Arabians. In 1972 she purchased her dream colt, the chestnut Shammra (Raseyn Gezan x Wafa El Shammar). After seven happy years, she was heartbroken to find herself in a situation that made it necessary to disperse her herd. Luckily, in 1982, Judy jumped at the chance to breed her Ibn Valaddi++ mare Vazra to the up-and-coming Concorde Gezan+/. “I put my order in to the mare,” says Judy, “for a red colt with a flaxen mane and tail and lots of chrome... Heck, she listened... I got everything but one stocking, not bad for an order up!” PW Freed’m went on to found a new era at Piney Wood Arabians, siring 24 purebreds and 30 half-Arabians, including the 2006 Canadian National Champion in HA Western Pl JO and JT 17 & Under, Cowboy Cool+//. Next on the agenda for Bud & Janet in 1959 were mares for Raseyn Gezan, so off they went to Carleton Cummings’ ranch – but they returned with another son of Antezeyn Skowronek, a grey yearling colt named Rifala’s Naseem. He followed in his older brother’s footsteps, winning Champion Stallion at the B.C. All Arabian show in Vancouver and at the Vancouver Island All Arabian Show in Duncan, BC, plus plenty of firsts in Native Costume. Rifala’s Naseem sired 59 purebreds from 1961 to 1984. His get nicked extremely well with that of Raseyn Gezan, producing horses such as Jericho Antez++ (Rifala’s Naseem x Skyline Carlette [Raseyn Gezan]), and Concorde Gezan+/ (Raseyn Gezan x Cinderellah [Rifala’s Naseem]). The Oddys did eventually procure their mares – from Cummings they were able to lease Taffy (Ferseyn x Taliti) a Crabbet/Davenport mare who produced Skowronek’s Jinnyi and Taffy’s Ferliti by Antezeyn Skowronek, and Cinderellah and Kahrabaye by Rifala’s Naseem. Other important foundation stock were Abu Farwas Rawia (Abu Farwa x Ghaziniga), Seglawi Anseyna (Rissantez Skowronek x Raseynette) and La Golindrina (Abu Baha x Faraga), double Abu Farwa. All exceeded expectations, not only through their progeny but also as teachers for the Oddy children and others whose beaming smiles inspired newcomers into the fold. Peter, Ken and Kristi would all agree they had a most

A Short Insight by Kristi Sindt (née Oddy) From as early as 2 years old I remember being kissed by an Arabian Horse. At one point I thought I was a horse, because they were such a part of our family – I ate with them, I slept with them, I travelled with them, they loved me like a family member, so who was to know at two, that part of your family had four legs! Mom and Dad met on a horse in Burnaby B.C. and little did Dad know, when he married my mom, he married a life long commitment into Arabian horses. Dad was steadfast and strong. To those that know my dad, he took/still takes instructions well from the one he calls “the boss” (my mother). When I was a member of Pony Club in Langley B.C., my pony decided to sit down like a dog in the line up, and I of course being 8 did not think the judge would notice if I just sat pretty as a picture as they strolled by us. My parents were so proud and the judge was so amused! Winning was not what it was all about. I was taught as long as you did your best, keep going in circles and never give up, you can do anything. They were right, the rewards were plentiful, and there as usual were my parents at the out gate waiting to say something positive. Almost 21 years ago this month my husband Jerry Sindt passed away. He was a talented horse trainer, but better yet an amazing, loving, kind, gentle and caring man to all that knew him. At the out gate, at 30 I had lost my 36-year-old soul mate. Our dreams together were no longer. Devastated, my mom and dad taught me how to take the good out of the bad, and to be thankful to have had the opportunity to have such a wonderful man in our lives. Thank you mom and dad for your strength at which time without it, I may not have made it through. As I stood in the line up waiting for the announcer to name the 2003 US National Champion in Country English Pleasure AOTR, I thought of the old days when my mom and dad were always at the out gate. A rush went through my body when they called our number. Flamethrower, a beautiful chestnut with four white socks, and I had accomplished what we had set out to do. It was a special day in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We had just won the third leg of the Triple Crown. Guess who was at the out gate ...still. Congratulations to you Mom and Dad, I am so proud of you and how many peoples’ lives you have touched. Your breeding program lives on in so many horses today.

unusual upbringing... but they would not have changed it for anything. As Peter explains, they all were involved daily in the running of the business. “The automatic waterer is more or less a modern invention – we didn’t have that thirty years ago! To feed and water thirty or forty horses, and clean their box stalls on a daily basis, is an absolutely enormous job. It was a labor of love by my mother – we did a lot of work. During breeding season, we sometimes bred so many horses that I’d ask if I could go do homework instead!” “My mother has a passion for horses. That is easy to say – but a passion is harder to demonstrate over the long term, and few people have a passion that they dedicate themselves to for over five decades. If people visit and they reveal a love for horses, it ignites that passion – it’s kind of like starting up a jet engine. When I was growing up, I viewed the endeavor from the inside looking outside – and upon leaving the farm, I was surprised to see that if you do something for a good long time, you’re bound to leave quite a trail behind you. It’s not just horses, it’s people and family.” These days, Peter is the managing member of Oddy & Associates, PLLC, appraising and consulting on a wide range of commercial real estate properties. He has lived in Kirkland, Washington since 1994. Ken is a professional chef and lives in the Lower Mainland area of BC; he manages a feed and tack store in Aldergrove BC. Kristi, the youngest, has been a successful realtor in the Los Angeles area for the past eleven years. She’s currently listing a property for Jerry Douglas of The Young and the Restless fame. Kristi spent much of her life growing up the Arabian show world, ever since she started riding at four years old. She won her first National Championship at 16 with Kahrabaye and her most recent one, Country English Pleasure AOTR, in 2003 with CA Flamethrower++/. Kristi married trainer Jerry Sindt in 1984. Jerry trained for Ventura Farms in Hidden Valley, CA, and had many halter champions including Penicylina, 1986 US National Champion Mare. Jerry tragically passed away in 1988 at 36 years of age. Kristi continues to keep in touch with her ‘Arabian family.’ She has a treasure trove of memories from her time spent with horses and says, “I have been lucky enough to travel the world, and continue to seek out new adventures every day.” canadian nationals August 2009 37

What is now known as “the Polish invasion”

began in 1963 when Arabian horses imported from Poland to Arizona had, in just a few short years, become all the rage. It was exactly the new blood that Skyline needed and in 1973 came by way of *Brusally El Azrak (El Azrak x *Salinaa). *Brusally El Azrak (“Azzie”), was born in 1968, bred by the Janow Podlaski State Stud of Warsaw, Poland and imported in utero by Ed Tweed of Scottdale, AZ. Bud and Janet first saw “Azzie” at the Brusally Ranch in Scottsdale. Janet writes, “I remember Ed Tweed putting his arm around me and saying I could not buy or lease this Arabian stallion... The tears rolled down my face and I thought how silly I was to cry over not being able to have this horse.” Two years later, after spending much fruitless time on the hunt for a new stallion, Janet discovered that “included in the Brusally sale was that powerful gentleman with the eyes I could never forget.” The Kuhailan colt, untouchable at age two, was listed in Brusally’s Sale catalog; the Oddys didn’t rest until he was safe at home in Canada. And, “in February, 1973,” writes Janet, “that kind wonderful stallion entered our stable, strutting and showing...” Azzie’s sire, El Azrak (Faher x Ellora [Witraz]) shares a dam with *El Paso, 1976 U.S. National Champion Stallion, and Elfur, winner of 14 races in Poland. And what a plus – his dam *Salinaa (Salwa), a halter champion and most classic winner the only time shown, was sired by Comet (Abu Afas x Carmen) from the noted Mlecha (db) family-line. Coming from Polish racing stock, Azzie was not at all like the horses they had at home. Initiating him into their breeding program was a stroke of genius. Rick and Bonnie Ball of Sultan Arabians commented that their foundation mares, sired by Raseyn Gezan and bred to Brusally El Azrak, produced some exceptional foals. As they wrote in the April 1987 News, “The offspring of this cross have combined the classic Arabian conformation through the Raseyn Gezan line, with the unquestionably [sic] soundness and performance ability inherited in the Polish line.” Seventy-six of Azzie’s ninety-seven purebreds came out bay; not one was chestnut, even those from Raseyn Gezan mares. His get were very elegant, perhaps even race-like. It was the change that Skyline Arabians needed and as one of their ads read, “Our purebred fillies and colts have arrived - come see them, pick out your future champions.” Words that would ring true, the Oddy broodmares outdid themselves producing such winners as Azcindi, Azulique, Jaleure, Jawarr+// (1992 Canadian National Champion Hunter Pleasure, Res Champion Hunter Pleasure JTR, Res Champion Show Hack), Mauhin (1992 and 1993 Canadian National Royal Red Top Ten in Country English Pleasure), Paprikaa and others. Slangsboda Arabians Ltd. of Danville, KY acquired Azzie in 1989. His last foals were born in 1991 and in 1993 he was donated to John & Rhonda Leach of Beaver Dam, KY. At their “Free Theraputic Riding Program for the Challenged,” he was a much-loved lesson horse. “Azzie” passed on to greener pastures in 2001 at age 33, having sired 119 purebred and half-Arabian foals.

Longevity seems to run in Azzie’s family. Azulique (Brusally El Azrak x Jinnyi’s Ferda) just celebrated her 31st birthday on June 16th, at home on Vancouver Island. She was bred by Bonnie Ball of Aldergrove BC. As a two year old she was sold to Joe Rendek of Edmonton AB, and trained and shown by Gail Lundquist. Among Azulique’s winnings were B.C. Futurity Champion Halter, and Western Pleasure champion. She had three foals for Joe, and was purchased by Pauline Law (pictured above with Azulique) at 12 years of age. Pauline also owns her bright bay son Shahtique (Honors), who grew to over 16 hh.

salwa

Azulique enjoys her daily carrots and Pauline says, “She is a much-loved mare. She still has lots of get up and go, I often see her having a good buck and gallop in the pasture.”

Dear Mrs. Oddy, (excerpts from a long letter) I do not know of an easy way to do this other than to just tell you. At 7:45 yesterday morning Azzie passed away... As he layed there I began to wonder how in the world I would explain all this to an autistic child... They are good people [the riders] and through Azzie’s kindness, he made there lives more enjoyable for several years... I thanked god every time I put a saddle on that horse... He had that unafraid stoic bold look right to the end. Thanks for sharing Azzie’s life with us! May god bless you both. Love, Rhonda

By 1977 it was again time to introduce a new stallion.

Vask (*Bask++ x Lolyfa)

The Polish-Crabbet cross had been so satisfactory that the search ended up back in Scottsdale, this time at Lasma Arabians where *Bask++ (Witraz x Balalajka) resided. His offspring were taking the show world by storm, having won a number of Triple Crowns, and people were duly enamoured. The Oddys, in a joint venture with Rick and Bonnie Ball’s Sultan Arabians, chose the *Bask++ son Vask, a bay yearling of Polish-Crabbet descent who complimented his sire and whose dam Lolyfa (Farlowa x Coulyfa), an Abu Farwa grand-daughter, traced to the taproot mare Basilisk (db) of the Seglawi strain. Bonnie writes, “In 1985 Vask was sold and moved to sunny California and did make history.... under the expert care of ‘Vask & Associates.’ Shown by Ray Fisher he made U.S. National Top Ten Halter Stallion in 1986. He was magnificent, to say the least. He has left his mark with Oddy’s Skyline Arabians and Sultan Arabians.” Vask’s get number 91. Rivaska

The final Polish stallion to come to the farm was *Falk (Balon (Vask x Paprikaa) SAHR x Philippa SAHR), in 1989. “We got Falk from Europe when he was not quite a yearling,” says Janet. The grey stallion, born in 1988, was bred by Goran & Christina Wale of Slangsboda Arabians in Sweden. “She had the offspring of Balon,” explains Janet, “and I had picked out an unborn foal if it was a filly. She phoned me when the foal was born, and it was a colt, but said that I deserved to Above Paso El Vask (Vask x Elpasa [*El Paso x have him anyway. So Falk flew from Sweden to LA, and trucked Paprikaa]) Bred by Oddys, Paso El Vask sired back here to BC at Christmas. Bud was gone to town with the 8 purebred foals. His only part-bred offspring, neighbors, they went and got some food, and they came back Kaypassa Dawn+, had many many Class A wins as well as 2003 Region 17 Championships in HA Road and couldn’t find me anywhere. Well when they did find me, I Hack and HA Ladies Sidesaddle. Her dam’s sire was in a sleeping bag in Falk’s stall, and there was a blanket over happens to be Shammra, by Raseyn Gezan. both of us, and he was resting his head on my neck. From then on he was my horse.” Falk has 34 purebred foals on the ground to date, but that number is likely to increase. Sunesta Arabians recently acquired Falk as a breeding stallion when the Oddy’s dispersed their herd. Mandy says, “He is the most well behaved stallion. I have his daughter and his granddaughter and that’s why we decided to get him. The action and the loyalty that they get from him, that makes it all worth it – if you don’t have a trainable mind, you don’t have a horse.” They even plan on showing him locally, in sport horse halter classes, and have had breeding inquiries for Warmblood crosses. In the end, a total of the achievements of Oddy’s Skyline Arabians is not measured by numbers of progeny and show wins, but by the pure joy that was produced. The achievements attained can well be attributed to the love and warmth shared within their circle of family and friends and beyond. So many people were introduced to the Arabian breed by the Oddy’s; gwarny (AMURATH-SAHIB x GWARA) their passion, enthusiasm, generosity, and eagerness to share the love of the Arabian horse has brought so much to all the balon SAHR lives they touched. Congratulations to Bud and Janet on your retirement, and... Thank You. BALLADA (PARTNER x BANDOLA)

Above & below left The stables at Bialka

Polish transportation

A

t my last writing, we were leaving the gates of

the Janow Podlaski Stud Farm and were heading for the Bialka Stallion Depot in south eastern Poland, a three-hour drive from Janow. The farm is in a picturesque area that has beautiful rolling meadows and forests. After a few hours of travel (where I again was glad I did not try to navigate this journey on my own), we pulled up the narrow gravel driveway into the farm. The stables and all other farm buildings were built over a three-year period from 1928 to 1930. Bialka functions as both a sport horse stallion depot and

as a purebred Arabian breeding farm. In 1981, by the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Bialka was declared the fourth Arabian state stud in Poland (beside Janów Podlaski, Michałów and Kurozweki). Today it is the third state stud as Kurozweki was returned to private ownership. The Arabian breeding program is quite small at Bialka as compared to the other two State Studs. Currently, the stud has around 100 stallions (Sporthorses and English Thoroughbreds) and over 120 Arabians. Besides breeding, the stud actively promotes equestrian sport and horse-riding. Bialka riders and Bialka-trained and -owned horses are widely known for their achievements in many disciplines including eventing, show canadian nationals August 2009 43

jumping, driving and endurance. Since 1989 Bialka has also been the organizer of the Arabian Junior Spring Show. The farm in past years has not normally housed its own Arabian stallions, but has chosen to borrow stallions such as Ekstern, Pegasus and *Piaff from the other two State Studs. In addition they have also taken advantage of breeding to outcross stallions such as *Gazal Al Shaqab. We had arrived on a Saturday morning and with fairly short notice. On this particular day, the farm was involved in a competition in a nearby town. As busy as it was that particular morning, Director Jerzy Urbanski had stayed at the farm to greet us upon arrival, even though he had prior commitments. This again is such a great testament to the hospitality of the people of Poland. After our initial meeting, Director Urbanski ordered his staff to keep all the horses stabled for our inspection. The director’s English was about as good as my Polish, but we managed to get the main points of our visit across. The one phrase that came through clear as a bell, is when he told us in English that “his farm was our farm” and to feel free to do and see anything we liked.

44 Canadian Arabian Horse News

One of the first things I noted at Bialka were the huge luminous eyes on all the foals. While Bialka’s breeding program does not yet have the history of the other two, careful selections are made each year and the resultant foals get better with each successive foal crop. Many of the foals were by the *Gazal Al Shaqab son Pegasus, owned by Janow, who is out of the Eukaliptus daughter *Pepesza. We also had the pleasure of seeing the beautiful mare Hula, who was still on the farm after being sold to Australia. Hula is the dam of the Regional Champion stallion *Hun (*Gazal Al Shaqab) who currently stands at Gallun Farms in California. Our brief visit at Bialka was concluded in a few hours and we were then back in the car for the final leg of our three-hour journey to the last stud, Michałów. Michałów State Stud is situated in the Holy Cross Mountain province of southern Poland and has been breeding Arabian horses for well over fifty years. With over 400 purebreds, including 100 broodmares, Michałów is the largest Arabian facility in Poland. Michałów also breeds rare leopardpatterned Malopolska sporthorses, and a small group of Shetland ponies. The area in which Michałów is located is in the heart of rich agricultural land. Wide open fields sur-

round the farm. Just as with Janow, my excitement built into huge butterflies as we drove closer. Once the barns came into clear sight the excitement was palpable. The first impression you get from the farm is just how modern it is as compared to Janow, not only in physical age but in also the equipment used and how it is run. After Janow, we had come to expect the use of horse-drawn wagons to clean the barns, but here at Michałów I was surprised to see a bobcat skidsteer and a new covered six-horse equisizer behind the show barn. The distinctive barns of Michałów, which have been used as a backdrop in many photo shoots over the years, are built from native limestone. The facility has numerous European-style box stalls in addition to the loose loafing barns. As part of the modern feeling to the farm, it also boasts a brand new stallion barn with a state-of-the-art lab for handling frozen semen and reproductive work. During our stay at Michałów we were lucky enough to once again stay in a private guest house right on the farm. Since the current Director of Michałów, Jerzy Bialobok, and his wife Urszula were not on the farm during my visit, we were greeted by

Magdalena Helak, one of the senior staff members. At the time of our arrival, the mares were being herded back to the barns from the enormous pastures. The main laneway from the pastures is bordered by immense chestnut trees on both sides, which were turning a brilliant golden hue with the crisp fall weather which was setting in. The beautiful autumn colors, combined with the thundering beat of hundreds of pounding hooves, were a sight to behold. I had often heard about the beautiful white Saglawi mares of Michałów but was not prepared for what I saw as I entered the barn. Never before in my life have I been taken aback by horses with not only beauty, but substance and character as well. My jaw dropped as I witnessed one great mare after another. Just as I thought I had witnessed the perfect mare, another few steps and another would entrance me. I have heard the terms ‘awestruck’ and ‘speechless’ used many times, but here at this farm, I truly felt that words could not express what I was seeing. The ethereal band of horses I witnessed that first day is largely due Top Emigracja (Palas x Emisja), with Tex Kam Middle Mares and foals in the barn at Michalow Left Stallions on the walker

to the foresight of the past director of the farm, Ignacy Jaworowski. Director Jaworowski and Director Krzysztalowicz from Janow were friends but also good-natured rivals. Each man had a keen vision and an undying passion for the type of horse they believed in. In viewing this herd in its entirety, one could almost say that Director Jaworowski seemed to have perfected the breeding of the Saglawi type of Arabian horse. The stallions of Michałów are again an impressive lot with the undisputed king of the barn being undefeated World Champion Ekstern, along with other notables such as Drabant, Eldon, and *Emigrant (who was still on the farm during my visit). The Polish State studs are always on the hunt for a new outcross to improve their herds. Stallions of considerable note such as *Gazal Al Shaqab, Enzo, *El Nabila B, QR Marc , *Al Maraam and *Laheeb have all either stood in Poland recently or have had their semen utilized by the state studs and private breeders alike. In reflecting on the high quality of the stock in Poland, one will also quickly realize that the state studs cull very methodically, keeping for breeding purposes only a handful of their best progeny from each foal crop. As you enter the show barns, it could be likened to walking down Hollywood Boulevard’s “Walk of Fame.” Stall after stall after stall of National and International champion mares such as *Zagrobla, *Kwestura, and *Fallada all graced the barn at the time of our visit. The legacy that *Monogramm left behind in Poland will be one that will undoubtedly be talked about for generations. Director Jaworowski and Izabella Zawadska, who was Poland’s state inspector of Arabian horse breeding for 25 years, leased *Monogramm from Bill and Meredith Bishop of the United States. Their purpose was to add back into the Polish breeding program the blood of *Bask.

46 Canadian Arabian Horse News

One cannot be sure if it was the brilliance of Director Jaworowski, divine intervention, or a combination of both, but the cross of *Monogramm on the mares of Michalow will go down in the history books of Arabian Horse breeding. The daughters of *Monogramm foaled in Poland have become truly prized throughout the world as collectors’ items. Last year *Kwestura sold for the record sum of $1,125,000 Euro and as of this writing *Fallada is set to grace the auction platform in 2009. (It is interesting to note that Director Krzysztalowicz refused to breed any Janow mares to *Monogramm while he was in Poland. Director Krzysztalowicz had a strong belief that chestnut horses were inferior and thus chose not to breed.) I had the pleasure of meeting this very distinguished gentleman twice in 1994 in the United States. Ignancy Jaworowski bred two of my absolute favorite mares of all time, the U.S. National Champion Mare *Elkana and, even closer to my heart, my own *Gitara. Our first meeting was at the farm of my friend Heidi Sause in Oregon. We met again a few days later at the farm of another good friend, Aude Espourteille, also in Oregon. The Director and Madame Zawadzka had flown in specifically to Aude’s to see *Elkana. I was present when he saw her for the first time in many years and his face lit up like a child. I was also able to photograph him with the Negatiw mare he bred, *Dewiza, at Heidi’s Maplewood Farms. As a gift I gave Director Jaworowski a framed photograph of the stallion *Probat that I had taken earlier that year. He was very grateful and gave me his business card along with an invitation to Poland – I regret not making the trip sooner to see the farm while he was still alive. After three days at Michałów, it was time to depart with a heavy heart. As we prepared for the last leg of our journey, we left with visions of hundreds of thundering hooves as a memory.

We headed out with our driver Pawel for the 90-minute drive to our final destination, the city of Krakow. Without Krakow there would be no Poland, for in this beautiful city lies much of Poland’s rich historical, cultural and intellectual panoply. Krakow miraculously escaped destruction towards the end of World War II, even though the retreating Nazis had every intention of turning it, like Warsaw, into fields of rubble. But in January 1945, the Red Army under Marshal Koner outflanked the Germans, causing them to flee before they could blow up the city. Krakow, the former capital of Poland, has a population of over 700,000 and is the third largest centre in Poland. After two days of taking in the cultural offerings of Krakow, including the beautiful Royal Wawel Castle, we ventured approximately 45-60 minutes west to the town of Oswiecim. Oswiecim has the infamy of having the Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau concentration death camps nearby. The Germans actually changed the name of the town of Oswiecim to Auschwitz during World War II. While certainly not horse-related, this sobering trip to Auschwitz is a must for any student of history. Much of the original camp is still intact along with one of the gas chambers and crematorium. The German sign above the gate as you enter the camp says “Arbeit Macht Frei,” or in English, “Work Will Set You Free.” It is haunting to see that sign after seeing it in so many documentaries about the Holocaust. The Nazi SS did everything in its power to conceal and deny the atrocities they committed here. It is estimated that well over one million people were killed at several death camps in Eastern Europe. I believe visiting here can help us as all a people of the planet Earth understand how atrocities like this should never be allowed to happen again. While we do hear the talk of “Never Again,” these types of atrocities still occur in our modern world, such as the case with the country of Rwanda in which Canada had a significant peacekeeping role. My short visit to Auschwitz is something that will never dim in my memory, and hopefully reinforces in me to always treat others with respect and dignity as I move throughout my life. It is somehow incomprehensible so see what civilized people can do and continue to do to their fellow man. After the death of Ignacy Jaworowski, it was interesting to read that he was actually part of an underground resistance

movement during the war. This fact did not come out until very late in his life. After our return to Krakow from Auschwitz we chose to have one last meal in the Central Square, which is the largest in Europe. Over dinner, the last few days’ events came flooding back and I realized that if you set your mind to it, you can accomplish your dreams. There were times in my life when I thought that travelling to Poland was only a foolish thought and was not practical or even conceivable. As the sun set in the horizon, I realized we had better hurry and hail a taxi to the airport as our flight time was rapidly approaching. As we drove through the dark and arrived at the airport with little time to spare, I quickly jumped from the back seat of the taxi to retrieve our luggage from the trunk. I paid the driver, and started wheeling the luggage towards the terminal. About ten steps towards the terminal, my heart nearly came out of my chest. I had just realized that I’d left my brand new $4000 Canon camera, which I had just purchased for this trip, on the back seat of the darkened taxi. I raced for the cab only to see its tail lights fading off into the darkness. The driver never even knew it was there. Since we flagged the cab down on the street, I didn’t know the name of it and

could not even imagine where to start looking, considering our flight was only an hour from boarding. To add insult to injury, many of my photos from Michalow had not been transferred to my laptop and were still in the camera! Needless to say it was a long, long ride home to Canada. As per my comment on Polish taxis in Part I of this article, you can now score Polish taxis: 2, Tex: 0. In conclusion, my trip to Poland was truly a lifetime ambition fulfilled. I know in my heart I will go back, perhaps (as you will see below) even sooner than later. The hospitality, the horses, and yes even the taxis made for a journey not to soon be forgotten. Please be advised that if these stories of Poland have peaked your curiosity about this great country, its horses or its colorful inhabitants, I am thinking of arranging a group trip in August or September of 2010. I would be happy to make arrangements or provide contacts for any and all interested. Please contact me directly for details. Should you wish to make the journey alone, again please feel free to contact me Top Magdalena Helak, Michalow Bottom Tex with Pawel, driver and guide

for details. (See p. 13 “CAHR Directors” for Tex’s contact info.)

Western Canadian B reeders Championships JUNE 13 & 14, 2009 • AMBERLEA MEADOWS, EDMONTON, ALBERTA • JUDGES MYRON KRAUSE & PATTI FELKER

The 2009 Western Canadian Breeders Championships were hosted by the Aurora Arabian Horse Association, returning to Amberlea Meadows just outside of Edmonton, AB. Breeders’ classes began on Saturday morning with beautiful, sunny weather. Spectators moved inside for the afternoon and evening sessions, giving their attention to a great lineup of halter horses. Marg Martin’s Luv the Moment took home the Yearling Fillies Championship plaque and a beautiful handmade Arabian Halter (designed and donated by Amanda Ubell), before being crowned Supreme Futurity Champion Purebred. The Piaff son BG Khaliff won the Championship in the Yearling Colts Futurity, with owner and breeder Bob Williams of Polar Pintabians & Arabians on hand to celebrate the win. Cori Wilson couldn’t attend this year’s show as she was busy at home preparing to be a new mom, but her Born To Shyne DF took home the HA 2-YearOld Filly Futurity and Supreme Futurity Partbred title along with the Reserve Championship in the WCB HA Mares 2 & Over. The evening crowd was treated to one incredible halter horse after another. Many of the show’s top entries are well-decorated with recent National and Scottsdale titles and were an absolute thrill to see up close. Horses like two-time Scottsdale champion Famess N Parys WA, with Maegan Friesen at the lead, came into the ring on fire and really got the stands going. Photos simply cannot come close to depicting the presence and quality of this mare. Huge eyes, beautiful face… and that little something extra about her that makes the hair stand up on your arms. And she knows it. She has grown into a stunning beauty and handily won the PB Mares 2 & Over garland for her owners and breeders, Wunderbar Arabians. 2009 Scottsdale Top Ten 2-yr-Old Gelding (Open and ATH) RD Solar Thyme, owned and bred by RaeDawn Arabians, has also matured handsomely and trotted into the ring ready to show off. He repeated his 2008 WCB Championship with Claudinei Machado at the lead. RaeDawn’s RD Allyanna earned the Championship in the PB Yearling Fillies class and went on to be named WCB Supreme Champion Purebred. The announcer told the crowd to ‘hold on to our hats’ as Kohlminer and handler Todd Ehret burst through the in-gate for the HA Geldings 2 & Over Championship. The rose garland was the first of several that went home with the fancy gelding for owner Vanessa Parsons, along with the title of WCB Supreme Champion Partbred. The performance horses hit the ring on Sunday, with an impressive lineup that rivaled the previous night’s halter entries. Closing out the show was the presentation of the Masterfeeds Breeders Cup. Each breeder can nominate three horses at the show, whose points in all classes will count towards their total. In 2008 the Breeders Cup was tied between Wunderbar Arabians & Sylvia Lenzner. This year, Sylvia Lenzner came out on top with the combined points of Kohlminer, Solfyre and the Champion HA Junior Hunter, She’s Got Sol, owned by Dennis Miller.

ECB Champion Stallion Psyracuse, shown by Gaetan Peloquin, owned by Kerry Kipping. Ron Johnson presenting.

By Ron Johnson Photos by SHOOT PHOTOGRAPHIC, unless otherwise noted. The Friday evening weather report said Saturday, June 6th, would be a sunny and warm day, so it was rather disappointing to wake up to a dull overcast morning. As I drove to pick up my neighbour and head for the Zone 9 Show in Bethany, some 45km away, there was even a few periods of a little rain. After a brief stop at Coffee Time in Fowlers Corners for coffee and donuts, we arrived at the Show Grounds. The show venue, Saddlewood Equestrian Centre, is located in the beautiful Bethany Hills and was the home of the Bethany School for many years (unfortunately this was the last year for the school). We parked in a paddock at the front of the property and walked up the tree-lined drive way to the top the hill and into the whirl of activity of exhibitors getting horses ready for the show, unloading from trailers and dashing to the show office to pick up their numbers. The show office consisted of Show Manager John Code, Show Secretary Greg Lymer, and his able assistant Cathy Webb. All three have worked on the Zone 9 Show for years and are often volunteers at other shows and events here in Ontario. Show Steward and Ontario Registry Director Jill Barton was busy checking entries and doublechecking the rule book. Fran Williams and her team of volunteers were busy arranging the ribbons and trophies and the always cheerful Jane White was there to give a helping hand where needed. The Zone 9 Show (held in conjunction with the Eastern Breeders Championships) was a spring-off of the Oshawa Half-Arabian Show, which became an all-Arabian show known as “Arabiana,” and in the 1980’s, become the Zone 9 Show. This is the third year the Zone 9 Show has hosted the Eastern Breeders classes. Zone 9 of the Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada is located east of the Toronto area, centering around the city of Oshawa, the home of General Motors. In recent months the area has been hit with huge layoffs, so the show

officials were concerned about the number of entries for this year’s show and were very pleased with the numbers that turned out. Exhibitors came from as far west as the London area and in the east from Ottawa and Quebec. Still under grey skies, announcer Doug Moore call the first class of the open show into the ring at about 8:30 am. Doug’s wife Mary Ruth escorted the open show judge, Francis Reh from Pennsylvania, into the ring. The open show continued until about 1 o’clock. After a short break it was time to start the Eastern Breeders classes and as they began, the clouds parted and the sun came out and we were able to get rid of our coats and enjoy the bright sunny day. The judge for the Breeders’ classes was Pam Zimmerman from Saskatchewan. The ECB Stallion Championship saw six entries and was taken by the two-year-old bay stallion Psyracuse (Psyitation x Savvanah), shown by Gaetan Peloquin, bred and owned by Kerry & Eveline Kipping of Willowsprings Arabians, Lombardy ON. The ECB Mare 2 & Over Breeding class was won by GM Padra Magnifica (NG Regency Afire Bay x Echspose), and was bred, owned and shown by Gaetan Anctil of St. Epiphane, QC. The reserve went to NG La Perla (Magnum Psyche x Milestone Crystal), shown by Gaetan Peloquin, owned and bred by Nicole Peloquin of Les Coteaux, QC. NG La Perla also won the Championship in the Futurity Mares 2 & Over class. Congratulation to Donna Wilson of Coyote Creek Farm in Arthur, ON, as the top breeder in both the purebred and half-Arabian divisions. Donna Wilson bred Champions Dirty Little Secret, CCF Integriti, and CCF Infinite Charm, as well as Reserve Champions CCF Porshah and CCF Amir Illusion (see Results on following page for classes/owners).
