The US Nationals show this year definitely had its problems. From the outside, it may have been hard to tell that anything was wrong. Champions were crowned, crowds came to watch, people shopped, all was well. But the rumors of discontent from the Arabian community were hard to ignore – the most obvious being that the halter trainers were mad enough to call a meeting for the formation of their own halter society, the success of which has yet to be determined. But first of all, a disclaimer: I have never attended a US Nationals in Louisville, though I wish I had been able to do so. I did visit Albuquerque last year. I quite liked Tulsa, both as a fairgrounds and as a city; I found it very friendly and charming and I don’t believe any of this current discontent can be blamed on Tulsa. There is technically not much wrong with the Fairground facilities. It’s true there is an abundance of pavement, but unlike Regina, Tulsa’s wood-chip paths made the longish pavement trecks quite acceptable. Despite some concern about the size of stalls, not many complaints were actually heard on this topic. The open mesh on the top of the stalls, however, will be an ongoing problem. There is simply no way to make open mesh completely fool-proof for horses, short of covering it over with plywood. Tulsa also went through a real hum-dinger of a storm on the Wednesday of the show (complete with day-long downpour; your fearless editor was very nearly hit by lightning in the parking lot), and no one had their stalls flooded out or had to travel through any sucking, deep red mud. That has to be a big improvement on its own. Many of this year’s problems can simply be put down to poor scheduling. One concern that proved to be well-founded was the size of the main Pavilion arena. While it’s technically possible to hold, say, a full English side-saddle class in this ring, it’s only due to the skill of the riders and the experience of the horses that we didn’t have some kind of pile-up. Even though the Pavilion is the prettier building, with a better warm-up arena and more spectator seating, competitors are begging for next year’s under-saddle finals to be held in the much more spacious Ford Truck Arena. Opinions on halter ranged from “a complete fiasco” to “least judging complaints ever;” both may in fact be true. No offence to halter fans, but the general consensus was that it might have been hard to find some way to make a halter class more boring, but AHA had done just that. Some classes with approximately 15 horses ran an hour and a half; there was no anticipation or excitement at the end since everyone knew who the winner was; and spectators lost the opportunity to compare the whole class in the ring. As well, with all halter classes finishing on Wednesday (including the main stallion and mare classes), many top horses and handlers did not stay for the scheduled Halter Champion presentations on the weekend, which were subsequently cancelled. I cannot fault the fairground staff or the people of Tulsa. They were genuinely welcoming and helpful in every respect; locals were always concerned that we had found everything we needed and were having a good stay. The show facilities are overall modern, functional, and well laid out.... they’re just not, well, prestigious. And after all the legitimate complaints about the stalls and the size of the main ring, I believe this perceived lack of prestigiousness is where many people felt that Tulsa fell short. They felt the National show and thus the Arabian breed had suffered a downfall. I am not sure what to make of this. Part of me thinks that, after all, it’s just a horse show. But I also see people who remember what they had though of as something great – and they see it being taken away, piece by piece. ...Such was Tulsa. Christina Weese, Mg Editor

Notice to Breeders: Genetic Testing Now Available for Cerebellar Abiotrophy Cerebellar Abiotrophy is a neurological disease, most often noted in newborn foals of approximately 3 weeks to 4 months of age. The most notable symptoms are a palsey-like head shaking (called intention tremors), the lack of a normal blink response although vision is correct, and an awkward exaggerated form of action with the forelimbs often similar to a military goose-step or high elevation used to cross over a very low object called hypermetric action. As these affected foals will often run into things or fall down, sometimes causing head injuries, their condition can be mis-diagnosed as injuries from a blow to the head or neck, making the true neurological condition go unnoticed. Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA) is being recognized in all bloodlines of the Arabian horse. Suspected to be an autosomal recessive defective allele, it can be passed forward through several generations without re-appearing. It is not a lethal gene. It does however make the horse generally unfit for riding or driving. Most affected horses are euthanized before they cause severe damage to themselves or to their handlers because of their inability to control their own balance. For those in Canada wanting to send CA sample submissions to UC Davis for testing, instructions are as follows. The cost for the CA test is $50 US funds. From the test animal, pull 20-30 mane or tail hairs with the root follicles attached (similar to DNA testing). You will find the Equine CA information, import permit, forms and pricing on the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory Website at: www. vgl.ucdavis.edu. Click on the services icon, click on the horse icon, then click on the shopping cart icon. Next, register for a MyVGL account: fill in your information, the horse’s information and which test(s) January 2009 19

you are requesting. Print out the bar-coded submission form with instructions and a place to tape the hair follicles. Tests can be paid for on-line, by cheque, or by filling out the credit card form that prints out with the bar-coded submission form. You will receive an email confirmation when your sample arrives into the laboratory. Please

allow 5-10 business days for results once the sample arrives into the laboratory. The results will be sent to you via email and a hard copy sent by US mail. If time is of the essence UC Davis recommends sending the sample via FedEx or UPS to the address listed for overnight couriers.

Parkland Arabian Horse Association The Parkland Club held its first meeting of the 2008-2009 season on November 17th at Glen’s Restaurant in Red Deer, followed by its Annual Meeting and elections. The executive for the upcoming season remains relatively the same, with Darlene Brouwer being elected President, Nadine Cusack as Vice President, Silvia Thacker as Secretary, and Laurie Calvert as Treasurer. Directors for 2009 are Anita Gillard, Eileen Miller and Jackie Heide. Many thanks to Anita for her years as Secretary. Our annual High Point Awards Celebration will be held on January 25, 2009 at the Lacombe Masonic Hall, in conjunction with our Christmas Party. Last year we held a highly successful and thoroughly enjoyable pot luck supper for this occasion, so we are going to repeat this format and anticipate a great turnout. Plans are underway for our annual Parkland Show to be held July 10-12, 2009 at the Westerner in Red Deer. We hope to see you all there!

Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada “Ride to Cure”

Left to Right Don Barlow, Michelle Holodniuk, and Joanne Morrison

Joanne Morrison of the Arabian Horse Association of Eastern Canada and Don Barlow of Misty Lane Tack present a cheque for $640 to Michelle Holodniuk of the Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation. Funds were raised through “Ride to Cure” Arabian horse shows that took place at Black’s Equine, Hamilton ON, during May and June, in support of breast cancer research at the JCC.

Beware of Scam Artists It was brought to the Registry’s attention that Arabian breeders have recently been targeted by scam artists claiming to be from the Middle East. The scam is a variation of a well-known scam where the buyer offers to send more money than the horse (or other item) is worth, or offers to send extra money for shipping. They then ask the seller to return the extra money to them. By the time their cheque is found to be no good (it will often be initially cleared by the bank, but bounce months later when the paper trail catches up), the buyer is long gone with the extra cash. Breeders are encouraged to be aware of the possibility of scams – often, but not always, scam artists are ignorant about certain telling details. The safest bet is to never deal with anyone offering to send more money than the agreed-upon price of the horse, or any other item, and to have buyers pay for the shipping direct to the shipping company. 20 Canadian Arabian Horse News

Message from the President

A

s always, our year at the Registry office ended with a rush of applications. Spring foals were all of a sudden hitting the date for the six month registration fees and that spurred members on to getting their paperwork in on time. In light of this, we feel there is a need to develop a system that sees applications and transfers coming in at a regular pace rather than this huge influx at the end of the year. With the exceptions of some pending registrations due to inaccurate documentation or proof of parentage, the office has kept up with the workload and is operating efficiently. After people read my last president’s report, I received a couple of comments regarding my statement about the possibility of our country heading for a recession. Well, unfortunately – although not an analyst – I was right. Much of our country has slid very quickly into financial crisis. With this realization, we must ask ourselves how this will affect our Registry. CAHR had just finally started to stabilize with our registration numbers after a continuous decline the last few years. In these tough economic times, we can either cover our heads

and wait for things to get better or we can get innovative and find ways to inject some excitement into our breed. It is the latter with which I am challenging our membership and CAHR Board of Directors. Throughout history, it has been the people with ingenuity during tough times that have prospered when the economy finally turned around. The good news surrounding this economic upheaval is, for those with an eye for the future, there are some great opportunities to select breeding stock at reasonable prices from some really great breeders who may be looking to downsize or retire. These dedicated breeders want their horses’ bloodlines to continue on even if they cannot continue their own programs. Forward-thinking individuals have the opportunity to make some great moves that may position them for success. Speaking of breeders wanting the best for their horses…There has been a lot of discussion lately regarding genetically transferable defective alleles. For years there has been debate surrounding SCIDS, and now Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA) is a hot topic. Both of these genes can be tested for and both can be controlled through proper education and ethical

breeding practices. I strongly recommend that all breeding stock be tested to ensure you know the status of your animals. As with anything, good breeders are those who take the time to become educated and act in a responsible manner. As a final note, the trial regarding the seizure of 100 horses in Alberta has found both plaintiffs guilty. In August at our annual Board meeting, we voted unanimously to suspend both Axel Hinz-Schlueter and Dale Huber. This suspension is for life and CAHR trusts that it sends out a strong message that we take very seriously the good stewardship and proper animal husbandry of our Arabians. The Board of Directors will meet again this spring to discuss the issues concerning our Registry. If you have any concerns or recommendations, please contact the Director from your province/area. All the best in the New Year,

Marcia Friesen, CAHR President Arabian North, Oakville, MB

Message from the Communications Director

H

appy New Year and best wishes to all our readers.

Ambassador Jamaal sp+

This issue of my director’s message has myself writing from several vantage points:

+W_\K^R ,KSUKV b +VSK 4KWKKV E+VS 4KWKKVG

• an elected director of this organization • an affected business person • an Arabian horse exhibitor but most importantly, from one that encompasses all of the above: as a stalwart supporter for the promotion of the Arabian horse in North America.

Happy Birthday Our new version of “The Canadian Arabian Horse News is moving into its second year of production with this issue. Happy Birthday to us! It certainly has been an interesting year based on all the comments we have received about the magazine. I have to truly say, I did not realize how much work this would be! Along with our success, we have also at times, created debate both within our ranks here at the magazine and with our readers, on the how the magazine looks, feels and reads. I think this is good news – while we do not have to all agree on everything, I think it means that people have taken notice of what we are doing. I am sure some efforts will take off with great success, while others may fail, but I feel that the only way to find the path to success is to look outside the traditional way we have done things in the past.

New Staff Many exciting things happened in 2008. We have brought on structured sales support with the addition of Amanda Ubell of Unity, Saskatchewan. Amanda will continue to help grow our advertiser base looking for new opportunities. We are also happy to report we will be working with Braden Davidson to help expand our Eastern Canada coverage. Braden runs a successful marketing business near Ottawa, Ontario catering to the Arabian horse breeders and trainers throughout the world. The magazine has desperately needed an eastern voice and we are hoping that Braden can help be a facilitator for our eastern readers. 22 Canadian Arabian Horse News

Increased Exposure As Promised

Caymus

/MKRY b :\YL\KMTK

As we promised last year, we will be putting the magazine into a digital flipbook format and sending out email blasts with links to our site. This means that your ads have the potential of being seen worldwide by upwards of 40,000 readers. I am negotiating with several e-blast and digital magazine companies around the world to ensure our advertisers get the best exposure we can offer them.

Thank You’s In 2008, we sincerely hope you have liked the articles we have put together for you. In this issue, I finally start the two-part series on my visit to Poland. More importantly, in revitalizing the magazine, we seemingly also re-ignited the passions of one of the best supporters the Canadian Arabian horse has even seen – namely Jean Berg of Stony Plain, Alberta. Jean has unselfishly donated her extensive knowledge and skills for well over twenty years in writing and researching articles for the magazine. Jean writes about “Ali Jamaal in this very issue and we thank her for all her efforts and look forward to many more! 2008 would also not be complete without a big thank you to Jim and Christy Egan of RESULTS, based in Colorado. Jim and Christy have been key partners in our endeavours by allowing us to distribute our issues at National Shows via the RESULTS booth. Continued on page 24...

This extends to the media at large and has meant that we cannot even take photos for the magazine or website of our own Canadian competitors, in any competition area, including right in our own hometown arena in Regina. This issue has been close to my heart for several years as it has not only impacted me personally as an Arabian horse photographer, but it now hampers the efforts of creating this magazine both financially and creatively. Being that the Canadian Arabian Horse News is owned by the Registry and is a non-profit entity, I have offered my photos for free to the magazine. The way I was able to accomplish this was by offering these same editorial photos to exhibitors at a later date, after the show was completed. This is a practice that has been

adhered to by many of the North American Arabian publications such as ours up until the last few years. I can only feel that the very businesses that dedicate their existence to perpetuating the promotion of the Arabian horse are being told “thanks, but you’re not welcome here.” In speaking with many affected horse exhibitors and professional photographers, the feeling of unease with the way these rules were enacted does not sit well. If there was a consultation process, who was involved, and has it been for the betterment of the promotion of the breed? There is no doubt from my standpoint, that some aggressive over-the-rail shooting mixed with some personality clashes has got us to where we are at today. The question arises, is the current solution the right one for the betterment of our breed? An organization formed by its membership, for the benefit of its members, needs to work on behalf of its membership. I continue to ask myself, how could our organization whose members make up the committees that make these rules, get so far off track in regards to banning free promotion? Was this truly the correct decision for a business and way of life (the equine lifestyle) that is in steady decline or was it just the easiest, most

100% Cmk BlooDlines

expedient thing to do at the time? Secondly, did anyone bother to ask the exhibitors who pay for these shows with their entry fees, if they wanted these rules? All tough questions that I have struggled to find the answers to. As this issue was going to press, I had the opportunity to speak to Taryl Pearson, one of the key organizers of the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Scottsdale could probably lay claim to being the most photographed Arabian horse show in the world. The rings are flanked by photographers from around the world shooting both freelance and for publications. Taryl reiterated that they welcome the publicity and media exposure they get from this free press, and have no intentions to ban media or professional photographers from the competition areas. That being said, Taryl also mentioned they do have explicit rules surrounding the taking and marketing of these “over-the-rail” photographs during the show to protect the official in-ring photographer. Could this perhaps be the type of framework we need to implement for our National shows? The question I again struggle to answer is: was there never room for compromise or discussion on this issue at the start? Better late than never is the old adage, so I hope we can help facilitate discussions on these matters in a constructive fashion. We are currently soliciting participation from AHA, various Arabian media outlets and many of today’s prominent photographers within the industry in our two-part series.

In conclusion, 2008 was a banner year not only for the rebirth of the magazine but also for many of our breeders and trainers. Many of our Canadians participated in major shows around North America and came away with top awards. This issue features the Canadian National Champion Stallion Major Jamaal on our cover. We congratulate Pomeroy Arabians on this achievement. Major is just the third Canadian-owned stallion to ever win this title, in fact Gai Champion was the last way back in 1975. Again, thank you for your support in 2008 and until our next issue, I remain surrounded by everything Arabian.

n August 30th, 2008, Flightline Farm Arabians and Sky’s The Limit Arabians held a joint Open House at Flightline Farm. This was the third annual event for Flightline’s

Leslie Harpur, Don and Chris Peeler, and the first for Sandra Arabsky and Herman Steunenberg of Sky’s The Limit Arabians. In 1992, Leslie, Don and Chris moved from suburban Ladner to South Langley to set up an Arabian horse farm. Langley, considered to be the horse capital of British Columbia, has provided the ideal setting. The move to a new property across from Campbell Valley Equestrian Park afforded the farm a wonderful opportunity to grow. The location is perfect – close to the city of Vancouver and only minutes from the USA border, with a 70’ x 150’ indoor arena, 28 stalls, outdoor arena, paddocks and on-site barn manager accommodation. Leslie adds, “Our foundation mares came from Petroglyph Arabians in Oregon, along with a few other purchases, and one particularly special home-grown mare, FF Trinity – we have about five or six broodmares now. We’re just really interested and we love it.” Sandra and Herman haven’t been in the business for very long but more than make up for that with their enthusiasm. “We started with Arabians about five years ago, it was kind of on a whim,” says Sandra. “I had showed and dabbled in horses since I was 11 – none of my family was horse crazy like I was. I got married and divorced, then I met my business partner Herman at a coffee shop in Cloverdale that my family owned.” After many ‘horse’ chats, the two sat down and decided to take a serious look at breeding Arabians. “So we bought our first horse together, and here we are now, going insanely crazy! In a good sense! We feel we have only just begun, there’s so much to accomplish and so many Arabian barns that are doing some amazing things.” Sandra, an elementary school secretary for 27 years, now lives on the farm. She goes home on her lunch break to feed 27 horses and says she tries to make sure there’s no straw or hay (or worse!) on her clothes and shoes when she goes back to work. Leslie’s son Chris, an up-and-coming halter trainer, got his start with a local trainer and has since worked with Terry Holmes, Robin Hopkinson, and David and Bob Boggs, among others. This year he showed STLA c Im FondaU (c Our Zeus x DR Fonda Color), a yearling half-Arabian filly owned by Sandra and Herman, to a Region 5 Sweepstakes Championship. “We had professional handlers come around asking to show her in the class,” says Sandra, “but we decided to stick with our original (amateur) handler, Chris. We were prepared to take a lower placing because of the decision, but luckily it didn’t work out that way!” Sandra adds, “We have watched Chris handle horses for years now and have a lot of respect for his work. He does an amazing job with the horses; we especially appreciate his calm and loving, but no-nonsense demeanor. We were thrilled with our decision, and would have been regardless of the outcome.” Continued on page 52...

Ali Jamaal

stallion profile

By Jean Berg

F

ollowing one’s heart can have far-reaching results when choosing that special Arabian horse. Thomas Bergren of Muskegon,

Michigan first saw Ruminaja Ali win the West Michigan Breeders Futurity as a yearling – the colt was highly animated and trumpeting his entrance into the show world. Those awesome moments at the rail began a successful venture for brothers Thomas and James, who bought the colt; their best broodmares were sired by El Magato and Fadi, promising a winning outcome. Ruminaja Ali has world famous progeny and one of the most celebrated is Ali Jamaal, a bay stallion born in 1982, bred by James E. Bergren. What a horse! The pieces fit together so well in Ali Jamaal that in the eyes of many he is the model Arabian horse. Just like his sire, who won 1979 US National Futurity Champion, Ali Jamaal, in a class of 58 three-year-old colts, became the Futurity winner in 1985 causing his fan base to grow by leaps and bounds. When Lenita Perroy from Brazil cast her eyes upon the silky-coated bay she could not be dissuaded and in 1986 he was flown to his new home at Haras Meia Lua at Sao Paulo. After siring a number of foals in Brazil, Ali Jamaal was returned to the United States in 1989 to stand at stud and to be conditioned at Doug Dahmen’s Intara Arabians in California for the Canadian and US Nationals. Ecstatic admirers watched Ali Jamaal, shown by Greg Gallún, claim the National Championship in Canada but were shocked when he went Reserve in the U.S., to the Aladdinn son Exceladdinn (déjà vu as Ali Jamaal’s sire had gone U.S. Res. Ch. to Arn Ett Perlane in 1983). A year later, once again back from South America, Ali Jamaal pacified his followers by securing the 1990 U.S. title. What a pedigree! Kuhailan in strain, Ali Jamaal traces tail female to the grey mare *Nejdme #1, the first horse registered in the US Arabian Stud Book of America. Bred in Syria, she was actually imported from Turkey by the Hamidie Society of Illinois in a group of 45 Arabians for display at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. To recover the huge cost of this endeavor these horses were eventually auctioned off in America. That this event occurred 116 years ago is very fortunate for those benefiting from Ali Jamaal breeding today. His dam Heritage Memory (El Magato x Heritage Labelle), an Aristocrat mare*, has a family tree loaded with the ‘Who’s Who’ of accomplished domestic breeding: her sire El Magato, nicknamed the “motion machine,” was a stunning dappled-grey performance and halter champion. He sired 14 National winners including 1975 double National Champion Mare Heritage Desiree. Other family notables include El Gato, Ferneyn, Ferseyn, Fadi, Fadjur (1968

Futurity Colt Shaikh al Badi and his dam Bint Magidaa and paternal grand-dam *Bint Maisa el Saghira are also Aristocrat mares. His pedigree, rich with the greatest Egyptian horses of all time, embraces *Khofo, *Magidaa,*Morafic, Nazeer, Moniet el Nefous, and brothers Shahloul and Hamdan, one of the most successful Egyptian sire lines in today’s show ring. What a sire! The pleasure of owning a horse like Ali Jamaal was within reach of determined horse people as soon as his foals arrived, as the majority were replicas of himself. For Jo-Anne Campone of Surrey, BC he was a breeder’s delight; in 1992, from her El Hilal grand-daughter Calypso Tessa, came Dream Quest, a 1997 U.S. Top Ten Stallion sold to Janet L. Wirick of Lone Butte, BC, for whom he won many halter and ‘Most Classic’ awards before selling to Washington. He was the sire of 142 purebreds, 2 of them Canadian-owned. Jo-Anne’s aristocrat mare The Dreamspinner, a Gai-Adventure grand-daughter, produced the 1990 filly Dream *Aristocrat - Arabian Horse World’s dam of 4 or more Class A Show Champions

Fantasy, who went to Frances Fischer of Aldergrove, BC; in 1992 the colt Magic Dream was born (see the Magic Dream stallion Profile, CAHN, Aug. 2008). Magic Dream, winner of Canadian and US National Top Tens in halter, is the number one sire in the CAHR studbook with a total of 398 purebred get; 32 Canadian-bred and/or owned. His son GF Forever Magic (GF Providence), bred by Mariane Adamson of Surrey, BC, was twice Region 17 Champion Stallion and AOTH Ch. Stallion while owned by Kristina & Perry Rennich of Tofield, AB. In 2008 he was purchased by Edgar & Georgina Simard of Cold Lake, AB. Many may also remember the beautiful stallion QR Excel (Magic Dream x Kouream de Ment), now in Italy but for a time owned by Dominic Thibaudeau of Prescott, Ontario. His full sister Swete Dreams produced the exceptional $4 million dollar colt QR Marq (by *Marwan al Shaqab [tail male Ruminaja Ali]), who sold to Belgium in 2007.

Dr. Charles and Jacqueline Knight of Canmore, AB didn’t hesitate to breed their mare Deception, a top-quality daughter of Canada’s 1982 Nat. Ch. Futurity Colt Dedication (by Dalul), getting Ali Dhalan in 1992. He went on to win the Western Canadian Breeders Champion Stallion and Top Ten Stallion at Canadian Nationals in 1995. Now owned by Kenneth & Debbie Waite of Silverton, Oregon, he has sired a total of 28 purebreds. Bred by T. K. Murrin Jr. & Judi Scoggins of Polson, Montana, the 1990 mare JE Ali Selene (Ali Jamaal x OF Fostoria [by *Paltrok]) became the property of Dr. Gilles St. Pierre, Rimouski, QC in 1998 along with her daughter Lady Jamaala (Focus Shalako). For St. Pierre she produced Killara and Royal Jamaal, both sired by Fairview Klassique (x Amir El Shaklan), before selling to Holly Woods Dillin of Fort Worth, Texas, for whom she produced NC Ciao Bella (x Xceptshahn), a 2008 Canadian National Top Ten Mare. Ali Jamaal: Stallion Profile, continued from page 30... Alia Jamaal (Shahdorable [x Bey Shah]), born in 1992, bred by Diane Gordon of Orange, Virginia sold to Dr. R. G. & Sarah Powell of Kanata, Ontario in 1998. For them she produced Ambassador Jamaal SP+ (x Amurath Baikal), purchased in 2000 by Kerry & Eveline Kipping of Willowsprings Arabians, Lombardy, ON, Simone MG (Magnum Psyche), The Aliminator MO (The Agitator) and Alisson MO (Besson Carol). Alia Jamaal returned to Canadian ownership in 2007 and is now owned by Pomeroy Arabians International of Grande Prairie, AB. What a success! The number of Championships pertaining to Ali Jamaal sons and daughters continues to amass worldwide – they tend to be the choice of breeders and trainers alike. His North American winners (not including numerous Top Tens) include National Champions Laamaj (Starilla), Encore Ali (My Mavica), SA Phoenix (Petrae), Europa el Jamaal (SL White Lace), BST Dajamaal (Miss TS Classic), and Dakar el Jamaal (Sonoma Lady); and Reserve Champions After The Dance (KH Dance Withme), Tulle el Jamaal (Talbreena), Ali Szar (La Rosa Joya), Pershahn el Jamaal (Perfectshahn SRA), and Parys el Jamaal (FF Pavielle). The second generation is proving itself as well – Major Jamaal (Soho Carol x Maya el Jamaal), 2008 Canadian National Champion Stallion, is linebred Ali Jamaal. As the sire of 404 get, Ali Jamaal has proven himself over and over again – and last, but certainly not least, let us not forget “the mares.” The prevalence of well-bred females owned by a large volume of breeders continues to make the story of Ali Jamaal the tremendous triumph that it is. Thank You Bob Pomeroy and Carrie Langstroth of Pomeroy Arabians International invited Peace Area Riding for the Disabled Society (PARDS) to be the beneficiary of funds raised during their Open House Gala Event. This was a tremendous opportunity for PARDS to unveil the preliminary drawings for our new facility, showcase our program by conducting a therapeutic lesson in the Pomeroy Arena and to make new connections within our community and beyond to help create awareness, generate support and make our vision for the future a reality. The Gala was a phenomenal success, raising over $100,000 in support of general operations and the New Facility Fund. nderstated, casual, low key...

none of these words describe the way Pomeroy Arabians International has entered the world of the Arabian Horse again after a nearly 25-year absence. The question has been heard railside more than once in the past year – “Grande Prairie, Alberta? Who would build a world-class equestrian estate that far north?” Well, let us tell you a bit about Bob Pomeroy and his wife Carrie Langstroth of Grande Prairie, Alberta and your questions may be answered. In the Peace country area of Canada, which geographically takes in parts of northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia, the “Pomeroy brand” has become known for quality. This establishment of quality in their business endeavors has allowed success to follow. Bob and Carrie are the founders of the “Pomeroy Group” of companies. The companies design, construct and manage several brands of inns and hotels such as

“Grande Prairie, Alberta – Who would build a world-class equestrian estate that far north?” Holiday Inn, Ramada, Best Western and, yes, even “Pomeroy Inn”-branded hotels. The portfolio also includes many wellknown restaurants such as Tony Roma’s and Boston Pizza. In fact in towns where they have multiple properties, the “Pomeroy Inn” hotels outsell their other hotels every night. Quite an accomplishment, but it gives you an insight into the Pomeroy idea of how things should be run. Many Arabian aficionados are probably not aware that this new Arabian horse venture is not Bob’s first foray into Arabians. In 1974, Bob’s interest in horses lead him to visit Paul and Helen Guthrie’s Triple A Ranches in west Edmonton. It was at Triple A where Bob’s passion for Arabian horse was ignited. At the time of his visit, the Guthries were breeding mostly Polish-bred Arabians. Bob liked what he saw; the beauty and athletic ability were something he had always admired in a horse and these ones certainly fit the bill. Bob was able to purchase his seed stock from Paul and Helen. In fact, as luck would have it, Bob was able to negotiate the purchase of one of Paul’s premier stallions – the U.S. National Top Ten Stallion Kaimr (Mraff x Kairona) – along with a few mares. This nucleus became the fledgling foundation of Pomeroy Arabians circa 1975.

Those associated with the ‘boom and bust’ economy of the Western Canadian oil patch in the late 70’s and early 80’s will all too well remember the very tough economic downturn that came. Bob’s dream of the Arabian horse was put on hold. He did, however, vow to return someday. Flash forward 25 years and economic prosperity had returned to Alberta. Little did anyone know that way up north Bob and Carrie’s business holdings would become very successful. These areas, with communities whose economies were largely based on forestry and oil and gas, were ones that developers traditionally shied away from – the common thread was a lack of quality accommodations for workers and business travelers. Armed with an idea to provide comfortable accommodations at a fair price in communities that had not seen a new hotel in many years, the model for success was forged. By 2006, Bob started thinking about semi-retirement and the dream of the Arabian horse was again on his mind. Perhaps you can say it never completely went away. He approached Carrie with his idea to get into the Arabian business as an endeavor they could both enjoy. She was at first a bit skeptical, but decided to embrace this new venture with open arms. When this writer first heard a couple years ago that a fellow named Bob Pomeroy from Grande Prairie had gotten into the Arabian business, I wondered, “Could this be the same Bob

Pomeroy from 25-30 years ago?” The fact that one of my family’s first Pure Polish Arabian mares, Triple A Bandenka (Clays Bandeleer x Brusally Farenka), was one of the original mares Bob had been purchased from Triple A made me all the more curious. The only way to find out for sure was to go to the proverbial horse’s mouth. I proceeded to track Bob down in Grande Prairie and after our initial introductions on the phone, low and behold, this truly was the same fellow from 25 years ago. We reminisced about the horses, and for the life of me I could not remember Triple A Bandenka’s name, but Bob remembered it just like it was yesterday, even though nearly 30 years had passed since he sold her. My first serious question to him was, “After getting out all those years ago, why are you returning?” Bob’s answer was instant and emphatic! He told me that, “Years ago, I had a vision to have a highquality Arabian horse breeding and training farm. I just could not afford to do it the way I wanted to the first time so I got out. We are now in a position to do it the way I had always envisioned.” Truly, listening to that statement may now give you some insight into what now has come to fruition... the dream that has become Pomeroy Arabians International. The past two years have seen that dream grow from a simple idea to a full-fledged reality. Their plans have included two facilities. The first was built at their home base in Grande Prairie, and the other in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Grande Prairie facility was completed this past sum-

mer and hosted an absolutely fabulous grand opening in August, the likes that our business has not seen since the heady days of the 80’s in Scottsdale – nationally acclaimed trainers giving seminars, steak dinners set for 600-700 people, an open bar and a band that played till the wee hours of the morning. The facilities are well managed and meticulously maintained. Two in-house trainers were also brought on board. Trisha Urick is the performance trainer based in Grande Prairie. The halter duties are handled by noted Brazilian trainer Joao Rodriguez, who divides his time between Grande Prairie and Scottsdale. The final phase of their dream will come to fruition in February 2009 when the ribbons are cut on the Scottsdale facility. The facility was painstakingly designed from scratch and has just finished completion. Breeders and trainers from around the world are expected to attend the event. Celebrating their business’ accomplishments has also meant giving back to the community which has given so much to them. The theme of their open house in Grande Prairie was a fundraiser for the Peace Area Riding for the Disabled Society (PARDS), raising over $100,000 for the charity. Many of the Pomeroy Group’s longstanding associates and suppliers donated auction items for the event – it was indeed the largest fundraising event the charity had ever experienced.

Bob and Carrie are unabashed supporters of all things Canadian; their support of Region 17 and the Western Canadian Breeders Championships over the last year has been a welcome addition. That support has not gone unnoticed in the Canadian Arabian community. In these past couple of years much joy and success in the show ring has come to the Pomeroys. Their mare Donatella Versace (Versace x VF Campus Queen; co-owned with the Desgagne family) was unanimous Scottsdale Supreme Champion Half-Arabian halter horse, and went on to win a Reserve at Canadian Nationals and a Championship at US Nationals in HA/AA Mare Breeding Stock/Hunter. Carrie had an especially good year in her first year of amateur competition, culminating in a Canadian National Top Ten Arabian Mare Breeding AAO win with En Vogue FA (Enzo x Psyren FA). The past year could not have ended on a more glorious note with their stallion Major Jamaal being crowned National Champion Stallion for Canada. In a fitting tribute to its humble beginnings, you will find a framed photo of Kaimr gracing the wall of the lobby of the new facility in Grande Prairie. It is sometimes said, with as much success as one may attain, never forget where you came from. Upon meeting Bob and Carrie, you will certainly see that seems to be a phrase they truly understand.

th e mak i n g o f a nationa l c h a m p i o n. . . Long before Bob Pomeroy and Carrie Langstroth laid eyes on Major Jamaal, a young trainer from Florida by the name of Michael Wilson envisioned a breeding between the stallion he was managing from Brazil, *Soho Carol, and the beautiful *Maya El Jamaal, who was residing on the farm. With the future foal’s sire and dam both by the great Ali Jamaal, it was hoped that the stallion’s lines would breed doubly true. Mike, a Canadian ex-pat (originally from Ontario), saw his vision unfold when Major Jamaal was born in 2001 on the property of Douglas Corp. in Florida. Michael readied Major for the show ring as a yearling and was very successful. The wins included a Top Ten colt in Scottsdale, Region 12 Champion Sweepstakes Colt, and a Reserve National Championship in the ultra-competitive Yearling Sweepstakes Colt class. It wasn’t long before all these accolades had caught the attention of another “Michael”, none other than consummate showman Michael Byatt from Houston, Texas. Byatt’s clients’ the Taylors, also of Houston, were looking for a superior stallion prospect. The deal saw Major Jamaal on his way to New Ulm to become a “Texan”. With Michael Byatt at the lead, Major returned to the ring over the 2005 and 2006 seasons and the highlight was the prestigious title of U.S. National Reserve Champion Junior Stallion. By the fall of 2007, Major had found his way to Greg and Nancy Gallun’s training barn in Santa Ynez, California. On a visit to Galluns’, Bob and Carrie had their first sighting of the snowy white stallion and the deal was sealed – the names Major Jamaal and Pomeroy Arabians would become synonymous. Bob and Carrie’s goal for Major from day one was to get him back in the show ring and to get him the mares he deserved for breeding. With Greg Gallun, the 2008 season started in February with Major being named Reserve Champion Stallion (2nd) in the aged stallion class at Scottsdale. A trip back to Scottsdale in April saw Major lay claim to the title of Region 7 Champion Stallion. After that win, a plan was put in place to get him in front of his new “hometown” crowd in Regina. As the trip to Canada neared, something happened that may be unheard of in today’s Arabian world – the owners of a major halter contender hauling their own horse. Bob and Carrie drove to California to pick up Major and haul him to Canada themselves, in their own rig. Bob and Carrie, along with good friends Hank and Thelma Scheunhage and Jordan Simons (Gallun’s assistant trainer), all jammed into the truck and headed down Interstate 15 bound for Saskatchewan. Once at the showgrounds, the days dwindled into hours and then into minutes. The excitement level increased as the time for the Stallion class came closer. Pomeroy Arabians hosted a party at the stalls of Rae Dawn Arabians just prior to the class. Mini Canadian flags to wave were brought in and handed out to anyone who wanted to show their patriotism. Major is a “thinking horse.” You can see it in the way he presses his lips together, the way he watches the people around him, and the way he sets himself up to do his job. He’s excited by the hubbub of the show, but he knows there’s nothing to be afraid of. As the grandstands filled, Major entered the arena with nostrils flared, tail flagged and perhaps the loftiest trot of his life. The 2008 Canadian National Show was the first National show where the new judging card was implemented. This new

style of judging scores a horse on separate categories such as movement, legs, type etc. The class was very competitive; former U.S. and Canadian National Champion Stallion LD Pistal had been brought out of retirement to show again, alongside other crowd favorites such as Scottsdale winners Shaddofax and FM Echota. The class was scored by the judges and now everyone awaited the results. Bob and Carrie were nervously waiting with anticipation. After what seemed like an eternity, it was official – Shaddofax was named National Reserve Champion to a rousing ovation. The thoughts were, now who possibly was going to win? Major Jamaal, LD Pistal? Everyone was on the edge of their seats. The results were finally read over the loudspeaker... it was then that the Canadian flags were never waived so high in that arena, Major Jamaal had done it! For only the third time in the history of the Canadian Nationals and the first time in 33 years, a Canadian-owned stallion was once again crowned king of the land. Congratulations were flowing to Bob and Carrie all night from well wishers. Major did not immediately head back to the sunny climes of Arizona, he first made a trip to Pomeroy Arabians’ home town of Grande Prairie, Alberta, to show off as the new Canadian National Champion Stallion. Major will be standing in 2009 at Pomeroy Arabians International in Scottsdale, AZ, handled by trainer Joao Rodrigues. With the quality of mares that Pomeroy Arabians has acquired for Major, his future could not be brighter. Congratulations to Major Jamaal and Pomeroy Arabians!

t all began as something to keep the kids busy.

“We had six children and were looking for something that would keep them busy and out of trouble through the teen years,” explains Warren Whitley. “We ended up purchasing a farm just outside of Belleville, Ontario. The farm had a small stable and we bought two saddle horses. While looking for a farrier, we met Bob Klassen, who eventually began to work for us full time.” Bob can perhaps be credited with introducing Arabians to the Whitley family – the first stock purchase came from Bob’s aunt and uncle, Fran and Geo Bloor from Trail, BC. It was Fran who suggested that, if the family was going to be raising Arabians, they should take a trip to Iowa to visit Garth Buchanan. “We did,” says Warren, “and also visited the Gainey Farm in Minnesota. We ended up purchasing horses from both farms over a period of time and established a breeding operation crossing Azraff/Ferzon bloodlines.” Thus began Warob Arabians. Gai Champion (Gay-Rouge x Ga-Gajala), bred by Daniel C. Gainey, was purchased at Gainey’s Minnesota ranch in January, 1973 by Warren and Sylvia. Except for his color, he was the spitting image of his sire, Gay-Rouge (Azraff x Gay-Rose), a double Top Ten stallion whose full brother Galizon won 1969 U.S. National Champion Stallion. Gai Champion’s dam Ga-Gajala (Ferzon x Gajala) is one of the original “four sisters” bred by Gainey that includes Ga-Rageyma (1970 Canadian National Champion Mare), Gavrelle (dam of Gai-Adventure, 1974 US National Champion Stallion) and Gafferra. He benefited greatly from Skowronek, get-

ting 56% of his bloodlines through Skowronek’s get: *Raffles,*Rifala, *Raseyn, Naseem, *Raswan and Jalila. His tail female line goes back to Jellabiet Feysul (db) of the Kuhailan strain, from Egypt. One of Gai Champion’s ads in the Canadian Arabian News states, “Shortly (after his purchase), he made an outstanding showing at Scottsdale, winning his class of 36 two-year-old colts and standing third in the Stallion Championship.” As a two-year-old he would go on to be undefeated in every Junior Championship offered in the U.S. Midwest, and three shows in Canada. Despite this success, the Whitleys were not expecting to win when they hauled him out west to Edmonton for the 1975 Canadian Nationals. “He was in really good shape,” remembers Warren. “My daughter conditioned him – she rode him two or three hours a day, every day, for several months. He was hard as a rock when he went into that ring!” When Gai Champion was announced as the 1975 Canadian National Champion Stallion, the family was ecstatic. “It’s one of those things you never forget,” says Warren. “You never expect it, even though you worked hard with the horse and conditioned them and everything else – but that year it seemed like the best horse really won. We weren’t big name trainers, just a hard working family.” Shown to the win by Gordon Shea, Gai Champion placed over three future National Champions: Aza Destiny, Jora Honey Ku, and Gai Parada (bred by Jimmy & Thelma Dean, owned by Daniel C. Gainey), who later turned the tables in 1977 by winning the US title while Gai Champion went Top Ten. Continued on page 51... January 2009 41

US NATIONALS Year of the Hunter Canadians had a fantastic show all around but the hunters stole the spotlight.

T

he 2008 US Nationals saw a break with the traditional move between Kentucky in the east and Albuquerque in the west. For the first time, the show

was held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the Tulsa Expo Square. Though reviews of the facility were mixed, and some odd planning with the scheduling led to halter classes being over by Wednesday, the locals and fairground workers at Tulsa treated competitors to a genuinely warm and welcoming Oklahoma hospitality. (See Editor’s Note, p. 16). Canadian entries put forth a fantastic effort at this new venue. Laura Wolsey and O Lordy+/ (The Firelord+/ x HI Passion) have taken the hunter world by storm. The British Columbia duo have been on a tear all year, leading up to three back-to-back Championships at Canadian Nationals – most notably in the Hunter Pleasure Junior Horse class. Laura and O Lordy took on the big guns in Oklahoma and once again proved to be an unbeatable combination, capturing Championships honours in the Junior Horse and AAOTR 18-35 classes. Laura’s coach Brenda Driediger piloted the chestnut gelding to a Top Ten in the Open Hunter, adding nicely to the one they earned in Regina.

Hot on their heels was Caroline Tomson of Rockwood, Ontario aboard Hot Diggity Bey (Bey Ovation x Simply Irisistibl). They opened the show with a unanimous win in the Arabian Hunter AAO Maturity before going Reserve to O Lordy+ in the Arabian Hunter Pleasure AAOTR 18-35. Caroline tells us she is getting married early in the new year and has plans to move out to the west coast – we’ll be keeping an eye out for these two at Region 17 in the future! Hot Diggity Bey also earned a Top Ten in Hunter Pleasure Jr Horse with Sharon Blendinger in the irons. Among up-and-coming 3-year-olds, the top two placings in the Arabian Hunter Pleasure Futurity went to Canadian entries. The Championship was claimed by Troy E (Enzo x Arsyn), jointly

True to his bloodlines, his dam Dellta Dawn was an accomplished Reining and Trail competitor with the Hesters. s r e h p a r g o t o h P l a n io s Profes Need Not Apply I

t has been well documented that the Arabian breed and many other light horse breeds are in serious steady decline. This has been clearly documented by

AHA and anyone who is involved with the breed. Sixty years ago, 70% of North America had a rural population base with only 30% of the population living in major urban centres. In 2009, the trend has completely reversed, with an 80% urban population and only 20% rural. The cause of promoting the equestrian lifestyle becomes more difficult and equally more important with each passing year. Urban and rural population splits aren’t the only thing that’s caused changes in the horse show arena. The digital revolution we have embraced has seriously changed the face of photography. Cameras and film used to be incredibly expensive and not terribly user-friendly. With digital photography, all that has changed. Not only can a highquality camera be had for less money (never mind the savings to be had on film), but more people are willing to put more money on the line because the digital world had made photography more accessible. Pictures can be seen, shared and copied instantly. This has not gone unnoticed by the AHA. In the 2004 Canadian Nationals Omnibus (the 2005 version was not available online), the Publications/Photographers policy states, “No Commercial Photographers other than the official show photographers will be allowed to photograph closer to the ring than four rows within the seating area and no commercial flash equipment will be allowed within the arena buildings. This policy will be strictly enforced.” These rules, which were introduced in 2001, were accepted, reasonable and necessary as occasional aggressive “over-the-rail” photographers had garnered complaints about spooking horses while classes were going on. Flash forward to 2006. The policy reads, “No Commercial Photographers, other than the contracted official show photographers, will be allowed to photograph in the arena buildings or into the competition arenas. This policy will be strictly enforced. Violation of the policy may result in removal from the show grounds.” The policy became even more strict in 2008. In bold, underlined print, it states, “Commercial Photographers at all national shows are limited to PRESS PHOTOGRAPHERS ONLY. Press photographers (anyone taking pictures for newspapers or periodic 50 Canadian Arabian Horse News

publications) will be required to sign an agreement stating that they will abide by official AHA rules and any photographs they take are to be used for editorial purposes only and are NOT TO BE SOLD under any circumstances. Only one press pass will be issued per publication... Cameras with detachable lenses or lenses of more than two inches are prohibited. Any lenses (sic) greater than two inches is considered professional equipment and is not permitted in the arena buildings or into the competition arenas to include seating areas... Professional photographers may not record the event with any kind of camera, or video equipment. This policy will be strictly enforced... Commercial photographers found violating this policy will be accessed (sic) a $1000 fee and escorted off the show grounds.” After publication of these new AHA rules became known last summer, there was an immediate outcry not only from its members, but also from respected Arabian publications such as Arabian Horse World (see online editorial by Denise Hearst, www.arabianhorseworld. com/issues/2008/08/original/ 08whatworld.pdf). The release of these rules caused a furor among competitors, many of whom use digital SLR cameras with detachable lenses, and/or lenses over two inches in length. Was the AHA going to ban competitors from taking photos of their own horses? In a well-known online forum, a representative of the show committee quickly moved to assure competitors that this was not the case. And indeed, before the 2008 Canadian Nationals, the AHA issued a Special Notice to clarify the photography policy, stating, “A press photographer is defined as anyone taking photographs/videos for a newspaper, periodic publication, TV, website, etc.” The detachable lens/two-inch definition was dropped. Anyone intending to sell their photographs would have to sign an agreement stating that they would not sell their photographs “until after the conclusion of the event” as well as pay a vendor fee to AHA. And it goes on for a full page, in an attempt to clarify the situation. What AHA has never adequately explained to its members is just how we got to this point. And why. As things currently stand, they are only hurting promotion of the Arabian breed at a time when it desperately needs it. During the 2008 Canadian Nationals, the Regina Leader-Post ran several articles in the paper and had an online photo gallery for the Royal Red. (Editor’s note: Azraff himself passed away at the farm in Belleville, in 1978. “His owner Garth Buchanan did not want to see him pass on at her place,” explains Warren, “so when he was about 28 we took a trailer down, made a big box stall in it, and brought

Flightline Farm and Sky’s the Limit Arabians Open House Continued from page 27...

The first Flightline Farm Open House was held in conjunction with the Region 17 Championships in Langley. “Our second open house was a little smaller,” explains Leslie, “because of the timing – we tried to go with the Western Canadian Breeders Championships; it can be difficult to ensure an audience when you’re working around a horse show. “This year we cranked it up a notch. We built a presentation area here at the farm, and Sandra’s family brought music for each horse. We had a lot of people drop in – neighbors and people we hadn’t even met, though we’ve been here three and a half years. Sandra and I have already started planning for next year. We have Regionals here next year, so the open house will coincide with that.” Sandra says, “ I brought back so many ideas from the open houses I went to at Scottsdale such as Midwest and Pomeroy’s. Lots of little personal touches that make you feel really important, like having greeters when people show up for the open house. In Langley, we don’t do a lot of that; we don’t open up our farms. We wanted to give people the opportunity to celebrate the Arabian horse together. “We had an excellent turnout, and we had so many volunteers. That was the most inspiring part – so many volunteers, they were all very well turned-out and professional. We invited a lot of people who were non-horsey. The weather was beautiful, and there were 31 horses presented over about three hours. My mom and dad, who come and sit in the stands in every boring halter class I’m in (Dad brings his camera and takes his picture of me handling the horse) – they came to the Open House expecting just a big long halter class and were very pleased to find it was much more exciting! “My favourite comment of the whole thing was from a gentleman and his wife who came up to me and said that their eleven-year-old daughter had wanted a horse ever since she was little, and they always thought it was too much trouble. But after visiting the open house and seeing how magical the horses were, they were thinking about changing their minds. We also sold a horse to a person who had had Saddlebreds, so that brought someone new into the breed.” As both Sandra and Leslie say, it’s all an opportunity to celebrate the Arabian horse.

of Owen Sound, ON, Yvette Vinton DVM of Simcoe, ON, and Bob Gielen of Norton, NB, finished in seventh place out of 21 starting teams on November 7, 2008, at the World Endurance Championships. Wendy MacCoubrey of Ste. Justine, QC, and Julius Bloomfield of Naramata, BC also competed as individuals. Held at the Terengganu International Endurance Park in Lembah Bidong, Merang Setiu, Terengganu, Malaysia, 126 riders representing 33 countries took part in the 100-mile competition, which saw only 48 individuals finish. The course took riders along stunning coastlines, through palm plantations, along canal banks and through natural vegetation forests. Only seven nations finished three riders, and the results were very close. First place went to United Arab Emirates with a combined time of 27 hours, 57 minutes and 59 seconds. Qatar finished in second with a total time of 28:47:17, and third place was awarded

to Bahrain with 30:54:22. Canada finished in 38:25:45 for seventh place overall. “I felt our strength would be in our teamwork and I think this proved true. Even though it didn’t always go according to pre-ride planning, on the whole the strong Canadian performance was the work of the whole group—grooms very much included—that got the horses through in such good condition and in position to place top ten,” remarked Chef d’équipe Kay Melvin. “Congratulations again to the whole Canadian contingent on a job well done. We should also thank our hosts who treated us so well and made us welcome in their beautiful country.” The host country very generously covered the team’s costs of getting to the event and their stay in Malaysia, but just figuring out the logistics of shipping six horses from three different airports (Miami, Los Angeles and New York) was quite a challenge on its own! Individually, Gielen was the top placed Canadian rider, with a time of 12 hours and 27 minutes for 40th place, with his horse FC Galaxy (A La Croix Noire x Starla Ku), an 11-year-old Arabian gelding. Vinton, for 47th, on Teese, an eight-yearold Arabian gelding. Unfortunately, Benns and her horse Supreme Justice (EAI Justice x EAI Marsecret), a nine-year-old straight Egyptian Arabian gelding, did not complete the ride. Though they were pulled after the first loop, Benns pit crewed for the rest of the team until the very end. Bloomfield’s horse, Avtar (x Shabumi), a 15-year-old Arabian gelding of Bey Shah+ and Silver Century++ breeding, developed anhidrosis (the inability to sweat in response to heat) and was unable to start. “This was the most challenging ride that I have ever completed, and my horse performed way beyond my expectations,” remarked Gielen, who hopes to qualify for the Canadian Endurance Team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. “Completing the ride in Malaysia was just an incredible experience.” Maria Mercedes Altars Ponton of Spain lead the competition from start to finish on Knobby, a 13-year-old Arabian gelding in a time of eight hours, 48 minutes and six seconds. “This year’s world championships lived up to Endurance’s reputation as the most demanding of all equestrian sports, as the nearly two-thirds of competitors who were unable to complete the course can certainly attest. The climate, terrain, and distance were physical and psychological trials of both horse and rider, and we are proud of our team for thriving on a course that most other nations struggled merely to survive,” praised Equine Canada CEO, Akaash Maharaj. The next stop for the Canadian Endurance Team is to field two teams, Canada East and Canada West, to the 2009 World Equestrian Games Endurance Test Event in Kentucky in preparation for the 2010 World Championships. September for the simple reason that I did not want my first trip to be rushed. I felt that going at sale time, while being a wonderful experience, would be too structured to allow the time to look or stay as long as I pleased in any one area. All that was left was to get on the plane. My travel to Poland took me from Edmonton via Toronto to London and then finally on to Warsaw. I purposely took this long route to see as much country as possible. Being that this was my first trip out of the Western hemisphere, I figured a quick eighthour layover in London would add some much needed true “tourist type” stuff to this horse trip. We were able to squeeze in a side trip to Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and most importantly, quaff a few pints in the local pub around the corner from the palace. Our flight out of Stansted airport in England to Warsaw later that night was on the equivalent of the Polish Westjet! Most everyone on the plane was speaking Polish; I could not understand a word and for the first time I felt like this trip was really underway. We arrived in Warsaw at approx 9 pm local time. After gathering our luggage and passing through immigration, we desperately wanted to reach our hotel. In such a panic to get going, our first order of business was to get ripped off by a “private taxi”. We only discovered the next day that we could have taken the same ride in a marked taxi for a fraction of what we paid. Taxi driver 1, Tex 0. Lesson learned!

After checking into our hotel, we headed out for some dinner. Not speaking a word of Polish, it was a challenge for us to figure out how to order. The younger people in Poland are quite fluent in English, so whenever we needed help, we searched out a young person. My first lesson with the language barrier was to try and figure out how to simply order a glass of water. For the first two days, I understood our servers as saying, “Do you want a glass?” and of course I answered yes each and every time. Each time I was a brought a bottle of a sparkling water much like Perrier. It took me three days to figure out what they were asking was, did I want water with “gas” which was carbonated, or no “gas” which was just regular water. By that time I had given up on getting a glass of water and switched to beer or in Polish, “piwo.” That was a word I learned to appreciate very quickly! After dinner we retired back to our hotel. It was encouraging to see how far advanced Europe is in regards to energy conservation than us here in North America. All the lights in the hotel hallways at night were on motion sensors. Even our hotel room had a panel in which you inserted your room key to turn the power on in your room. This feature meant that when you left your room all the power was shut off because you would take your key with you. In an age of rising energy costs and dwindling resources, it was refreshing to see that these simple changes can have a major impact. Continued on page 66... January 2009 63

Continued from page 66... Each horse is either fed in a box stall or tied to the wall in loose housing to eat their ration of grain. Each horse also has their own name on the wall (even the foals) and amazingly enough through the daily repetition, the horses will run to the spot right under their own sign and wait to be tied. It is a marvel to watch the process. It was funny watching how nervous the young colts got when at times they went to a wrong spot and the grooms called in Polish to them, to get into their own spot. To walk the grounds and through the barns at Janow feels as if you are walking on hallowed ground. The Janow State Stud was established on December of 1817 and is the oldest state-run farm in all of Poland. When you enter these grounds you truly feel as though you have stepped back in time. These barns have housed the absolute greats of Polish breeding over the years. As the saying goes, if only these walls could talk... Our day had finally come to an end as daylight was waning. We agreed to meet Anna the following morning at 7 am to begin our extensive farm tour. As I got back to my room after dinner, I was restless. I had never flown more than three or four time zones either east or west in my whole life and always assumed jetlag was just an old wives tale. Well, was I ever wrong! My body clock was totally upside down. At noon I was ready for bed and by midnight I was wide awake. The next morning, I was up at around 4 am laying in bed eagerly waiting for daylight to approach. As soon as it was light enough to see outside I dressed and was out wandering the streets of Janow. After the morning feeding and a drink in the loafing paddock, it was a sight to behold to watch the mares burst through the gates out into the open fields for their daily grazing. The ground actually trembled as the herd thundered by us. Our next stop was the stallion barns where many great stallions are housed. It was literally a who’s who of Polish Aristocracy in that barn. The Polish National Champion Stallions *Ganges, Poganin, and Etogram are just few of the established sires housed there. After a break for lunch we agreed to convene again later in the afternoon, once the light was better, for a photo session in front of the famous clock tower barn. Any stallion that I wanted to examine and photograph was brought out. A quick trip to the colt barn was entertaining to watch the young colts come back from a day in the pasture. In such a far away land, it was surprising

to see a colt by Afire Bey V and one by A Temptation in the herd. These colts were the offspring of Janow mares which had been leased to the United States over the years. As the day went on, Anna had a surprise for me. Earlier that day I had picked out a beautiful bay mare named Eutona (Etogram x Euterpe) as my favourite mare on the farm. Very dry and with classic Kuhailan characteristics, she exuded “Old World Polish Style.” Anna informed me that this mare was also Director Trela’s favourite mare. As I stood in the shadow of the clock tower barn, to my surprise, Eutona was brought out for me to have my photo taken with her. The day concluded with a walk to a forested area behind the new office building. In a clearing there are few large boulders, under which are buried many of the Polish greats such as Czort, Celebes, Bandola and Eukaliptus. It certainly again made one think of how special this place truly is to anyone who breeds Polish Arabians. I can say with absolute certainty, I would have to think very hard to recall any place that I have been in my entire life where I was treated so graciously. I almost felt guilty for monopolizing all the time I took of the staff at Janow. Anna made us feel as if we were family and stayed by our side for basically two days. Over the course of three days, not one area of the farm was off limits, and we were treated like royalty. The same can be said for our stay at Barbara Orlos’ hotel. Our last night was spent talking with Barbara about her father, Director Krzysztalowicz, and the history of the farm. Barbara talked about the many famous people who have stayed there over the years and how Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones and his wife Shirley come to the hotel for a special Polish dish that her staff prepares for them each time they come to Poland. Coincidentally enough, my first day at Janow was the anniversary of Director Krzysztalowicz’s death. He was a revered man on these grounds and to this day the respect he commands even in spirit is staggering. He is credited with finding many of the horses that were either abandoned or escaped in the countryside after World War II. The distinctive Kuhailan look that made Janow famous in North America during the 70’s and 80’s was largely attributed to the foresight of this man. Our third day at Janow was almost sad, as we had to leave early to continue our journey. Watching the clock tower barn fade off into the rear view mirror and thinking… will I ever come back? still echoes in my mind.

Arabian Horse Days

Au g u s t 2 0 0 8 - J a n o w P o d l a s k i , P o l a n d Mid-August in the small village of Wygoda, Poland, situated 2 km from the town of Janow Podlaski, has become known around the world as “Arabian Horse Days”. Breeders and trainers from around the globe descend on the village and nearby State Stud for several days of showing, sales and presentations. 2008 marked the 30th anniversary of the Polish National Arabian Show and the 38th annual Arabian sale. In 1972, Paul Guthrie of Triple A Ranches in Edmonton, Alberta topped one of the very first sales at Janow with his purchase of the stallion *Baharr (*Ego x *Banda). This year’s event held many grand offerings in the little village; world traveler and multi-National Champion mare *Pianissima returned home to Poland from her lease in America to be shown at the Polish National show by Greg Gallún of California. The Polish breeding program has become very global with the advent of transported semen. Foals by Magnum Pysche, Enzo, and WH Justice are now becoming common place in Poland. A special guest was also in attendance this year – famed American Polish Arabian breeder Richard (Dick) Patterson of Sisters, Oregon travelled to Poland for the first time in many years. Mr. Patterson and his ex-wife Kay Sharpnak are the breeders of *Monogramm. What an absolute joy it must have been for him to see the living works of art his breeding program created through the offspring of *Monogramm. Not to be outdone by *Pianissima’s homecoming, the organizers of the annual sale had a large surprise. For many years the show has included the annual Pride of Poland Sale which lately had become legendary for the quality of 70 Canadian Arabian Horse News

horses consigned. The last few years each of the Polish State studs and its private breeders alike seem to top themselves with the quality of sale offerings brought forth. 2008 brought a surprise offering to the already star studded line up. After all the lots were announced for the sale in early spring, rumors abounded that the State Studs would be introducing a late addition to the sale that would literally be the talk of the Arabian breeding world. Introduced in early summer as Lot #1A was none other than multi-National Champion Mare Kwestura by *Monogramm. This mare had been one of the most accomplished show mares in Polish breeding history. She has been shown around the world and has been champion in nearly every outing. An added attraction to the offering was the fact that she was offered in foal to arguably one of the hottest stallions on the planet right now, QR Marc, who was reportedly sold to Belgium for a sum in excess of four million U.S. dollars. As the events drew to a close, the show ended with *Pianissima being crowned Polish National Champion mare. The sale also made history with a gross of $3.175 million euros or approximately $5,143,500 Canadian dollars. Kwestura sold for a record sum to His Highness Sheik Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman. She had bidders from nearly every corner of the globe bidding for the right to take her home. The bidding quickly opened at well over 100,000 euro and soared from there to settle out at $1.125 million euro or approx. $1,822,500 Canadian Dollars. Rumors abound that the bidders may have been positioned to go well above what she

actually sold for, but that the delay in phone bidding by two separate parties prompted the auctioneer to pronounce the lot as sold. The previous high seller in Poland was the stallion Bandos, who was sold for $806,000 back in the early 1980’s to Ventura Farms of California. Kwestura, the absolute picture of grace and beauty, is now quietly residing in Germany at the farm of noted breeder and trainer Frank Spoenle, waiting to foal out her much-anticipated foal by QR Marc. Kwestura has already produced two National Champion offspring. Kubla Khan NA (U.S. National Champion Arabian Reining Horse Five and Under) was imported in-utero by the famed Hollywood and Broadway Director Mike Nichols when he leased Kwestura several years ago. Her second is two-year-old Kabsztad, 2008 Polish National Champion Junior Stallion. An added feather in the cap of the *Monogramm legacy in Poland was the presentation of the World Arabian Horse Association (WAHO) trophy to Ekstern (*Monogramm x Ernestyna). Ekstern has wowed the crowds in every show ring he has entered throughout Europe and has since gone on to be one of the preeminent sires in Poland at a relatively young age. Since 2005 this trophy has been awarded to purebred horses of superior value and is selected by the registering body of their country. Mike and Sheena Steenhart of Morning Sun Arabians in Crossfield, Alberta own what may be the only Ekstern offspring in Canada, a colt named MS Celtic out of the beautiful *Ecaho daughter Celesta PASB. The Steenharts purchased Celesta PASB at the Pride of Poland Sale in 2006.

Nancy MacConnell Bourque of Ibriz Arabians, Cornhill, New Brunswick, wrote in with the following news: “This year has been both happy and sad at Ibriz Arabians. In June we said goodbye to Shaah El Ibriz (Ansata el Ibriz x Imperial Dakilah) after three years of trying to cope with a tendon injury that happened as a yearling. Several members of the neighborhood were involved in his care at some point and there were a lot of damp eyes when we said goodbye to ‘Chester’, as he was fondly known. “Ben-Adhem Omar (Ansata El Ibriz x SD Athena) spent the spring and early summer at Ben-Adhem Arabians in Sussex, New Brunswick, having his training updated after two years of ‘retirement’ due to the illness and passing away of my husband and mother. I don’t think ‘Doug’ was very thrilled at being put back to work, but I have been planning to use him as my “ride” and I have enough enthusiasm about his training to make up for both of us.

2008 HA Filly

Khalil (True Colours x Khallika), 2007 Straight Egyptian colt, has sold. Jacquie & John Hebert of Al Shama Arabians in Lanark, Ontario, would like to extend congratulations to the Schroer family of Polar Arabians in Germany on their acquisition of this outstanding show colt and future herd sire! Khalil is a beautiful exotic full brother to True Honour, again with those lovely tippy ears, large liquid black eyes and small muzzle.

News from S.R. Horse Training S.R. Horse Training of Fort MacLeod, AB, was one of the few Canadians at U.S. Nationals for 2008. We headed to Tulsa, OK with two purebred Arabian Junior Working Cow Horses. S.R.’s own 4-year-old stallion (Joker) and a client’s 4-year-old mare (Mint) were entered in the Working Cow Horse Futurity, and for the fun of it, since it was available, we entered both horses into the Cutting Futurity as well. Joker won a Top Ten in the Working Cow Horse Futurity, and 3rd in the Cutting Futurity. Mint won the Reserve Champion in the Cutting Futurity. Between the two horses, they brought home an impressive $10,000 US in prize money. S.R.Horse Training is now looking forward to 2009, starting with Scottsdale in February!

News from Willowsprings Arabians Willowsprings Arabians (Lombardy ON) are proud to announce their stallion, Ambassador Jamaal SP+ (Amurath Baikal x Alia Jamaal), was Ambassador Jamaal SP+ a Legion of Honor recipient in 2008. Besides many wins in open and ATR Hunter Pleasure classes, Ambassador Jamaal was Reserve Champion Stallion at the 2007 Eastern Canadian Breeders Championships.

Half-Arabian Finds a Special Home

SJ Nite Lily won AHA’s “Horse of the Month” youth contest in September. Lily’s former owner Amanda Ubell brought it to our attention, saying she had tears in her eyes when she was reading it. Following is an excerpt from the letter to the AHA, written by Marlowe Evans, age 8, of Maple Ridge BC. “Me and my Mom looked at what seemed like hundreds of horses. It seemed like we would never find our family horse. Then we found Lily’s picture on the internet. My heart stopped, she was beautiful! “My Mom agreed to write to the lady who owned her. My mom needed to know that Lily was good natured and friendly. I just wanted to brush and to hug her. I’m not a very good rider anyway because I had to have splints on my legs until I was six so it didn’t matter to me if she would ever be a show horse. “The owner sent us a picture of Lily out in a big field with her neck curled around her son Lucas, a little boy about the same age as my brother. That was enough for my Mom – after she passed the vet check, Lily made the trip from Saskatchewan all the way to Chilliwack, BC. “Lily is so kind and gentle that I want to start taking riding lessons again now that my legs are so much stronger. I think she deserves to be the horse of the month because she has taught me to dream about riding again and since she is so special, I think I will be able to. I believe we were meant to find each other.”

Abbenathay

We had a very busy year in 2008. At the shows this past year Abbanathay (Shamruk++ x Mishmash) earned a WCB T6 & Res. Championship in HA/AA Trail; PL Banner Star (Midnite Stahr x Bannar’s Last Hope) continued to show her grace and beauty in the Western Pleasure ring and showed off that Arabian versatility as she brought home a 3rd place finish at the SAHA’s Endurance Ride. Most exciting was when both Khrista & Abbanathay made a debut in a new division this year, Arabian Working Cow & Cutting. We thank SAHA & SRCHA for their efforts to support this new division at the shows in Saskatchewan – we managed to get our Khaeczharb daughter, Khrista, qualified for Nationals for 2009! With the continued support and training of Taylor Douglas of Douglas Performance Horses, we’re aiming for Canadian Nationals! Thank you to Renee Lupien-Smulan for breeding her registered overo Paint mare Stance to Khaeczharb – this is Khaeczharb’s last foal as he is now retired from breeding. Thanks also to Crystal Harper for purchasing HS Kolors Khemorada’s SHN Payback breeding and using it on her beautiful partbred Arabian/ Saddlebred mare, Echo. Rae-Dawn Arabians Expands to Scottsdale Rae-Dawn Arabians’ Murray Popplewell sent us some pictures of the new Scottsdale facility. “Shirley and I have the fortune to co-own this beautiful five-acre Arabian farm in Scottsdale AZ,” writes Murray. “The farm, located at 11249 Arabian Park Drive, is co-owned with Bob Pomeroy and is situated next to the home of Pomeroy Arabians International. So with these two Arabian farms side-by-side, Arabian Park Drive has taken on a Canadian look! We will be moving our horses there early in December and looking forward to spending some time there.”

Cyty Heat Heads South

Cyty Heat (Cytosk x Arabay Hilana) is now in training with Joe Resor of Setting Sun Stables in Indiana for the 2009 year. Joe will be campaigning him in Western Pleasure, hoping to build on the success of Cytyheat’s previous years with Carla Jackson.

Owner Robert Sproule adds, “We’re confident that the geographical move, combined with the professional exposure at Setting Sun, will not only benefit his time there as a breeding stud, but also the marketability and worth of his offspring. We will still be standing Cytyheat at stud for 2009, so contact myself if you’re interested, but mostly – wish us luck in ’09. Thanks to all for your support, past and future.”

Bob and Gail Williams of Polar Pintabians (Stony Plain AB) are celebrating the arrival of RG Lancelott, a foundation-bred Pintabian stallion by BHR Hosans Lancer out of the beautiful Zanjifahl. Bob writes, “Lancelott is a 1/2 brother to our mare Tarazi, who we lost to foal colic. We are constantly seeing the greatness in this line from her offspring, so we just had to have this fellow. He is an 11-year-old Pinto/Pintabian/Partbred Arabian who has been sitting in the weeds as an elderly gentleman’s pet, who at 85 yrs of age could no longer look after him, but wanted him to go to a home where could be used to enhance the Pintabian horse – we were fortunate enough to get our hands on him. We drove through a blizzard all the way to Litchfield, MN to pick him up, very nerve racking, but we have him home now safe and sound. “RG Lancelott will be standing at Polar Pintabians for 2009. We welcome everyone to come and have a look at this stallion. We look forward to showing him to you.”

BG Skeena

In 2005 Polar Pintabians of Stony Plain AB donated a yearling gelding to the Canadian Pinto Horse Association for the Hi-Point Youth Rider. Bob writes, “The girl that won him sent me this update on his progress. I was really flattered by what she had to say about our partbred Arabian, BG Skeena (aka Ozzie).” Dear Bob and Gail, This is Kaylie Bruner (the girl who won BG Skeena). I was just emailing you to give you a little update on him. I have recently started riding him and he has about 30 rides. About a week ago my backup eventing horse went sore, right before my event this past weekend. I decided to take Ozzie instead. I took him in the very lowest level of the 3-day event, Trot a Trail. This entails a walk-trot dressage test, a 2 ft jumping course, and trotting along a trail beside all of the other big scary jumps. In the dressage test, he was absolutely amazing!! He was in frame, and had some beautiful circles, and got a 7 in his free walk. “Later that day we went on to stadium jumping. I had only jumped him twice before the competition so I wasn’t expecting much. Well he absolutely loved it!!! He was taking me to all of the jumps and could not get enough of it! Then Sunday, we had our crosscountry segment. He had an absolute blast! I was so proud of the little guy. I ended up 5th out of 11 on him and I am ecstatic because I never expected anything that amazing. “Ozzie is the sweetest horse I have ever met. He is such a suck and absolutely loves people. He is extremely willing and will try anything for me just for a little rub. I thank you guys so much for donating him. He is an amazing horse. Nobody can train a horse to have a brain, they can only work with what they have and I am ever so grateful. He is everything that I hoped for and more.”

News from Piney Wood Arabians We are so proud of the P.W. Freed’m kids, who yet again have gone on in the show ring to garner wonderful awards in 2008. Cowboy Cool ++/ and Cowgirl Cool both earned Top Tens at Youth PW Design By Freed’m Nationals competing against each other in the same class; Cowboy went on to earn another at our Canadian Nationals. Pretty Boy Floyd earned two Top Tens in Hunter classes at Canadian Nationals. Sandi’s Anglo Arab (Reggie) also did well at the Regionals with Tarah Strachen & Brenda Dreidiger in Sport Horse. Nineyear-old Serena Keubler won with her mare Freed’ms Frosted Dream, age 4 years, first show under saddle. There are others and we congratulate each and every one. This year brought some changes... I sold all my stock and bought the lovely daughter of PW Freed’m, PW Design By Freed’m. She is four years old and from his last foal crop. She came home to the farm bred for 2009 to the Legacy Of Fame son HJ Gold N Fame, so we have a foal to look forward to in the spring.
