At Unique we believe, whether you are a large commercial herd or a smaller purebred breeder, the only way to improve your breeding program and improve that cows that you work with every day is to identify and verify what you already have. Registration is a quick, cost eective step to accomplish that. The added bonus is in that same one sweep you have met your traceability requirements for ProAction. Our international genetic markets never would have been possible for our farm without permanent lineage identication, it has value added our daily activities. Tracy Morey, Unique Stock Farm

RUMINATIONS Krista Cressman General Manager / directrice générale, Jersey Canada This time of year seems to be filled with AGMs and annual reports being sent out. Here at Jersey Canada, we are planning for our own annual meeting. Going virtual this year has made it possible for more people to tune in and get engaged, and we hope you will take the time to join us for the Jersey Canada Annual General Meeting. While it is no replacement for us connecting and having conversations in person, it will have to do for now! You can sign up via our website or calling the office, and we hope you will tune in April 1, 2021 at 12 noon EST. This is my second contribution to the Jersey Breeder magazine, and I love that my contribution to this magazine is titled Ruminations. There are few things I enjoy more than learning something new and ‘ruminating’ on it. As of late my big ruminations are around learning all I can about this organization and our members, and creating a new strategic plan for Jersey Canada. Strategic planning sounds fancy, but it is just about reaffirming who the organization is, defining future goals and creating a map to get there. What those goals might be is determined by taking a close look at what is happening in agriculture and assessing how the key priorities for Jersey Canada can be best met as we grow forward. In the next few months, my goal is to connect with members, partners, and other breed organizations to be sure that consideration is given to reflect the diversity of members from west to east.

The Jersey breed has a bright future for growth as consumers continue to move towards products that are solids based, growing niche markets like A2 milk, and milk produced by animals with lower environmental impact. The next decade will be one of many opportunities, and we at Jersey Canada are excited to support our members and Jersey producers along the way.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE DU PRESIDENT John Vander Wielen President / président, Jersey Canada Time flies when you’re having fun, and as I write my final report as President of Jersey Canada it has given me the opportunity to reflect on the past 29 years that I have been actively involved in the Jersey breed, and the many great friendships that I have had the opportunity to build over that period of time throughout the dairy industry.

In closing I personally would like to thank the board members and staff of Jersey Canada for your support and friendship during my time on the board, but especially during this past year. The most important people that I would to say thank you to is my family for their support and patience during my time on the board.

Have a good day! Enclosed with this magazine is a copy of the 2020 Jersey Canada Annual Report John and notice of our annual meeting which is being held virtually on Thursday April 1 • • • 2021. This Dashiell son who is out of a Craze, hails from the great Ahlem herd in California. Sturgis’s pedigree traces back to many Very Good cows with high production records. He is a balanced bull with 6 on conformation, 7 on mammary system, and is great for functional traits as well. To add to the mammary traits that he provides, Sturgis will also add width to the rump and chest giving your herd more capacity to increase production. Sturgis will create daughters that will last in your herd for a long time as he is 109 on herd life. To add to that he is 104

He is nearly 1,000 kg of milk, 128 kg of CFP, and great deviations for fat and protein at +0.44 Fat and +0.17 Protein. A production profile like this to go along with the rest of what he offers is a great thing for any herd. RAPPORT DES TAUREAUX 0200JE10057 RIVER VALLEY CABOS CORPORAL 0200JE10057 River Valley Cabos Corporal is a VIP son out of Chilli Nitro Cabo. Cabo is a 3x All-American or Reserve All-American from our River Valley Farm™ Program. She is a Nitro daughter with maternal lines going back to Pleasant Nook F Prize Circus EX-97 herself. Corporal’s sire, VIP, has had daughters winning at major shows in North America, Europe and Australia. He is a son of the World Dairy Expo

Supreme Champion TJ Classic Minister Venus EX-95%. We expect Corporal’s daughters to be tall and dairy with an open sweep to the rib. They should also have a steep foot angle with a smooth fore udder attachments and high rear udder attachments. His impressive GJUI of +15.2, and Mammary System of +10 backs up the quality of udders we would expect to see from him. •••

0200JE01242 ST-LO DELL 0200JE01242 ST-LO Dell is a Respect son out of ST-LO Topeka Darla EX-92. Dell’s maternal line screams top tier as it contains over 30 years of VG or EX direct maternal dams. The granddam is a VG-86 Sultan, then an EX-90-3E Lad, then an EX-90-3E Berretta from Billings Lester Darlyne SUP-EX 94 5E. We expect Dell

to transmit the same as his superior maternal line dictates, being +13 Conformation and +14 Mammary System. He exemplifies how genomics paired with a strong maternal line can delivers something dairymen everywhere and the Jersey breed want! •••

The Effects of Inbreeding on the Canadian Jersey Inbreeding has been happening for generations, and reversing its less desirable effects can’t be achieved overnight.

By / par : Kathryn Roxburgh

18 MARCH / MARS 2021 Canadian Jersey Breeder / Eleveur de Jersey Canadien

Inbreeding. A word that can be polarizing. A concept which is concerning, yet easily dismissed all at once. Inbreeding remains a relevant topic of discussion a full decade into the genomic era, as the practice has done a lot of good things for Jersey breed progress, but it has also caused some unwanted genes to flourish. There is no quick fix to the negative outcomes of inbreeding; it has been happening for many generations, and it won’t disappear immediately. But there are steps that breeders can take to slow the rate of inbreeding within the Canadian Jersey population. Simply put, inbreeding is mating animals that are related to each other. Any time an individual animal appears more than once in a pedigree, this is an example of inbreeding. It may be that an animal shows up in the same generation (e.g. both the maternal grandsire and paternal grandsire are the same bull), or in different generations (e.g. when the sire and maternal grandsire are brothers, an example of a practice commonly referred to as “line-breeding”). Inbreeding can be managed, but it is not entirely avoidable. In August 2020, Lactanet Canada released their annual update on inbreeding statistics for each dairy breed in Canada. As of the end of 2019, the Jersey breed

ing, with rates for other Canadian dairy breeds ranging from 2.94% (Milking Shorthorn) to 9.16% (Canadienne). Since the advent of genomic testing and genomic selection, the rate of inbreeding for all dairy breeds has increased. This is because genomic selection has led to concentration of certain family lines, as well as a shortened generation interval. As breeders use genomic indexes to maximize genetic gain for their herd, pedigrees are “stacked” more intensely. That is to say, the same cow family or sire line is likely to appear in both the sire and dam side of the pedigree. Stacking pedigrees has resulted in significant genotypic and phenotypic gain for Canadian Jerseys over the past decade. Consider the change in average production for Jerseys from 2010 to 2019: an increase of 547 kg of milk, 45 kg of fat, and 26 kg of protein, and the average BCA increased by 22 points for milk, 31 points for fat, and 27 points for protein. Compare that to the preceding ten years: between 2000 and 2009, the Jersey production average increased by 168 kg of milk, five kilograms of fat, and four kilograms of protein. The average BCA increased by just eight points for milk, five points for fat, and seven points for protein. The genomics era has brought

Reducing the level of inbreeding in the Canadian Jersey herd will, in the long run, protect and improve fertility, longevity and disease resistance within the breed; all of which are hallmarks of the Canadian Jersey. has an inbreeding rate of 6.90%. Fifty years ago, in 1970, the rate of inbreeding was less than 2% for Jerseys. Jerseys are currently in the middle of the pack when it comes to average percent inbreed-

significant economical improvements to the performance of the average Canadian Jersey.

Conversely, the loss of genetic diversity in the Canadian Jersey population will reduce fertility, longevity and disease resistance in the long-term. The more similarities between genetic lines being mated together, the greater the probability that two undesirable copies of a gene are likely to be inherited by the resulting offspring. Genes are transmitted as part of a larger group of alleles on a chromosome. A desirable gene may be closely positioned to an undesirable piece of DNA. When a portion of the chromosome is passed along, the unwanted DNA “hitchhikes” along with the sought after gene. The Jersey Haplotypes Affecting Fertility, namely JH1 and JH2, are transmitted by this kind of process. Reducing the level of inbreeding in the Canadian Jersey herd will, in the long run, protect and improve fertility, longevity and disease resistance within the breed; all of which are hallmarks of the Canadian Jersey. But it won’t be achieved overnight, especially when building on the momentum of genetic gain for the breed. Jersey breeders will need to make a conscious effort to balance index and performance traits with outcross genetics when selecting herd sires. Perhaps this will mean opting for the bull with the lowest R-value (i.e. the lowest average genetic relationship to the rest of the population) among a group of bulls which meet the herd’s pre-determined selection criteria. Balancing the short-term benefits of inbreeding (i.e. higher index and performance) with the long-term benefits of reducing the rate of inbreeding (i.e. improved fertility, longevity and disease resistance) will take commitment from every breeder across the country. It took many generations of intentional pedigree selection for the Jersey cow to reach her current level of performance, and it will take many generations of intentional pedigree selection for breeders to protect the Jersey’s advantages from the damaging effects of intense inbreeding.

Secrets Of The Herdbook

Les secrets du livre généalogique What is behind a name? Ce qui se cache derrière le nom?

by/par: Rachel Quesnel Shilletto, Jersey Canada As we prepare ourselves for another year of uncertainties, we search to find comfort, kinship and happy moments. Today I would like to bring up celebrating. Celebrating all our Jersey breeders and owners on achieving the highest registrations record since 1963 at 12,042! It’s been well covered on social media, but it deserves lots of attention; your work, your dreams, your dedication to the Jersey breed is what produced these numbers. I am very grateful to be included in this momentous time for Jersey Canada and its members. This is truly a representation of your dedication to the Jersey Breed and I look forward to another year working with all Jersey breeders and owners. The not-so-secret recipe to another successful year is getting those registrations in! While most of our breeders are very good at submitting their

registrations regularly, others need a little help. Last summer, Jersey Canada started sending reminders to farmers who were behind and some farms have subscribed to receive a regular reminder. If this is something that you think your farm could benefit from, please send me an email at rachel@jerseycanada.com. To paraphrase a Beatles song: “Oh, we get by with a little help from our friends’’. Jersey Canada is happy to help where we can. Registrations contain many secrets and untold stories. For example, do you know that different farms have different ways of naming their animals? I recently spoke with a farm where they bought animals and simply couldn’t figure out how the name structure worked. For that farm it was simple once explained, but for another farm it can be so different. We have farms that have cow family

names, we have farms that make a list of names every year go down the list as animals are registered, and there are still other farms that just use the animal’s management number. Personally, I love all these different ways of identifying animals, and I even appreciate when farms not so subtly name an animal after me! Keep on dreaming up names, I look forward to reading them on your registrations.

Pour paraphraser une chanson des Beatles: « Oh, we get by with a little help from our friends ».

All these dreams shared over a phone conversation makes me wonder what else our Jersey breeders and owners are dreaming up. Remember our office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. We love hearing your secrets and untold stories.

Choose to Register Your Jerseys AUTHENTICITY A registration is your certificate providing assurance of authenticity. When we purchase quality products, we receive supporting documents verifying their provenance. A Jersey Canada registration certificate denotes an animal as either purebred or a percentage of purity. The certificate also provides this information for potential buyers, and contributes to any marketing programs. PEDIGREE A pedigree is a representation of an animal’s genealogy. The registration certificate for each Jersey animal will indicate purebred or the percentage of purity. Pedigrees visually represent the ancestry of an animal, making it easier to predict and select what they will pass on to offspring, and are important tools when making breeding selections for specific characteristics, traits and production. PROFITABILITY Registered Jerseys contribute to breed improvement and profitability for all breeders, and help to build a strong market for Canadian genetics. Selling an animal with proper identification and pedigree information gives a buyer greater confidence, increases the value of the animal, and creates more opportunities for A.I. PROTECTION A registration certificate indicates legal ownership of an animal. Under the Animal Pedigree Act, it is the seller’s legal responsibility to supply the buyer with the transferred certificate within six months of the date of sale. If an animal is sold as a purebred/percentage, registered or registerable animal, the buyer is legally entitled to the certificate at no extra cost. This provides the buyer protection and assurance in the transaction.

Calculating Feed Efficiency in your Herd by Joanne Edwards, 1st Vice-President, Jersey Canada Feed cost is the highest input cost on a farm. Feed efficiency is a subject top of mind as commodity prices continue to rise and environmental pressures on industry are ever present. Increased feed efficiency within one’s herd can improve profitability and have a positive impact on waste management. Feed efficiency has a large array of variables at play. Forage quality is the largest driver in efficiency. Along with forage there is cow maintenance which varies with body size, age, stage of lactation and number of lactations. We also have land utilization, our cow environment to factor in, climate, cow comfort (overcrowding & disease), rumen microbial health and bunk management for example. There has also been found to be a level of genetic heritability to feed efficiency. As research and the sheer level of data for the breed is at a disadvantage to a breed with a larger population and genomic testing numbers, it is unfortunate that within Canada we are unable to have the new feed efficiency trait being released for Jerseys at this time. Developing the trait for feed efficiency was next to impossible to establish prior to genomics.

The Jersey breed, as we know, is highly efficient at converting energy into milk production; producing high solids milk and expelling less waste. Research shows Jerseys expel 55% less phosphorus than other breeds – a testament to her efficiency, and how the feed efficiency of the Jersey breed is linked to lowering a farms environmental impact. Cows that are moderately sized that produce milk efficiently are favoured in feed efficiency. A cow of smaller body size inadvertently leads to lower maintenance requirements in turn affecting feed efficiency positively.

While looking at feed efficiency within heifer groups in a herd, one could observe animals raised in the same environment and with the same level of feed, looking for those animals with the greatest rate of gain to breeding age maturity, and with the lowest level of health incidences. These animals are likely to have the highest genetic potential for feed efficiency as a lactating cow. Feed efficiency calculation within a herd is another tool to assist in decision making, affecting profitability of farms as we look to continue to improve income over feed cost.

FEED EFFICIENCY (FE) CALCULATION Energy Corrected Milk (ECM) is of interest. By using ECM it gives us the opportunity to evaluate herd feed efficiency, as well as allow a standardization across breeds to make some comparisons in feed efficiency between breeds.

We have been breeding Jerseys since 2014. We started out using Jersey semen on tough breeding holsteins, we kept the daughters and continued on breeding them back to Jersey. We are striving to breed for problem free cows. Milking daughters we are excited about right now are Joyride's, his first 2 daughters: Elkrest Joyride 277 scoring VG 85 and Elkrest Joyride 233 GP 83. REGIONAL — ONTARIO

The 75th Annual General Meeting of Jersey Ontario took place virtually on February 27th, 2021. Jersey Ontario's first annual meeting to be delivered virtually by Zoom and delivered through Farm Boy Productions, Guelph ON. More than 50 members and industry personnel joined the online session, beginning with the business portion at 10:00 a.m. As a result of the business meeting a motion put forward by Brent Howatt, seconded by Paul Warwick, Perth-Huron Jersey Club was discussed: “Be it resolved that Jersey Ontario/Jersey Canada have only purebred Jerseys (no JX animals) on their genetics evaluations.” The vote passed 18 for, 12 against and 5 abstaining. Jersey Ontario will move this motion to Jersey Canada for consideration at their Annual General Meeting.

The 2021 Jersey Ontario Production Awards were announced, full results are available at jerseyontario.ca. Highlights of the awards included the following Trophy Winners. An information Q & A session was delivered by Eric Bauman, Wittekind Jersey Farm and Kathryn Roxburgh, Roxburgh Farms on “Bracket Bulls, Crossbred Cows and Their Place in the Herdbook.” The number of bracket bulls, or those denoted by JX available in Canada has increased substantially over recent years. This informative session provided an explanation of exactly what the brackets mean, how to interpret the meaning of JX and why the offspring from some bracket sires can be registered as purebred while others cannot. It also addressed the definition of the purebred Jersey cow, the role of the Canadian herdbook, and the place of crossbred cows in the herdbook.

Breeder Profile: JayRon Farm Ltd.

Written by Rhonda Hulan, Jayron Farm Ltd.

Jamie and I purchased the farm June of 2014, and since that time we have increased the herd to 65 kgs of quota, and worked on building cow families and increasing production levels. The cows are milked with a Delaval AS300, which was installed in July of 2019. On farm, there’s about 140 animals, we tend to hold over the heifers and decide after they calve out if we want to keep them. The feeding program is very simple, the cows are bunk fed round bales and receive concentrate feed at 18% in the robot. Thus far, we’ve been able to maintain good SNF / BF with the current setup. There has been discussion

about reinstalling the computerized feeders to allow those high producers access to more grain. Where do we go from here… we’ll work towards maxing out the robot by means of continuing to purchase quota and barn upgrades. Lucy, a shorthorn heifer, arrived last summer and since then a few more shorthorn crosses have been added. So, it’s safe to say the beef are returning to the Parkhe Breigh family. My off farm undertakings have continued during the Covid-19 pandemic, which of course, keeps life hectic, exciting and keeps Jamie “holding down the farm”.

We would like to thank Rhonda for representing Jersey Atlantic on the Jersey Canada Board of Directors.
