Richard Osborne of Willow Creek Jerseys is a member of the Jersey Canada Show Committee, as well as an accomplished Judge, and was most recently the showmanship judge for the 2022 Jersey Canada Youth Showmanship competition at the Royal Fair in Toronto. Willow Creek also strives to exhibit at many shows and has had several All-Canadian nominated cows.

Can you break down the thought process when judging? What is it that the judge is mostly looking for?

R: To become an official judge in Canada we are encouraged and expected to attend judging schools to gain the necessary knowledge and public speaking abilities to not only place a dairy cattle show appropriately and efficiently but to also have the skill to give the necessary reasons to express why we placed the class before us the way we did. When judging cattle, we typically keep the dairy cattle score card breakdown in mind be it a heifer class or milk cow class, as the scorecard reflects the weightings of each trait of the animals’ body. Official judges typically have a desired animal in mind that reflects these weightings and assesses the class before them looking and placing the animals in order of the physical attributes which they possess. For example, when judging cattle in milking form the highest weighting of 42% is given to the overall mammary system so that is the starting point most judges begin with when looking at a class. Cattle with great mammary systems immediately get moved the front of the class. What are some of the best show cow families and which bulls old and new are best to use to produce good show cow families?

R: Over the years and generations great show cow families are constantly emerging and evolving to represent our ever changing dairy industry needs and management styles. I am not going to single out or select a family because I will probably forget one that has impacted the industry or our own herd the most. However, the families and animals that typically leave the biggest and longest lasting impact in the Jersey breed are consistently the families with adequate production and of course great components but that exude extreme breed character and width throughout. Animals with exceptional rib structure, wide chests and rumps typically calve out to be the ones with exceptional mammary and production abilities. So when choosing mating sires, we usually look for bulls that are outliers for type but also have adequate levels for fat and protein. Remember, breeding exceptional cattle takes patience as generational improvements are needed to get to the animal which you want to create.

What is your best advice for a beginner to get more involved in showing?

R: If you are a young person getting involved, 4-H by far is the best way to get introduced to the beginning steps and processes involved with showing. Not only will you learn about the show program but build and establish lifelong friends. Aside from 4-H you can also introduce yourself to someone local to you, who is already part of the show industry. Many folks who show are always willing and looking for young people who are interested in showing to help prepare their animals not only at the show but also at home.

What are the key things you look for when choosing a cow/heifer for a show? What kind of preparation do you take for certain shows at certain times of the year?

R: Several things can and do factor into choosing animals to show. First of all we look for cattle that have an extreme overall dairy and breed character appearance. After that we break the animal apart assessing the quality of the feet and legs, rib and rump structure. Of course if it’s an animal in milking form we look to the mammary system and stage of lactation to make sure the animal will be in the appropriate condition for when the show is to take place. Preparing the animal at home for the show can take weeks, months and sometimes years to have the animal develop into a show winning cow. However, for a show coming this summer or fall you typically want to have the animals selected and begin preparations once you have decided whether they are show worthy. Once selected, begin by washing, clipping and hoof trimming at regular intervals. Halter training and leading sessions can happen as often as desired to get the animal trained. Please remember winning a show typically happens before you enter the ring. 80% of winning a show happens in the planning and preparation at home the last 20% happens in the prep at the show and in the ring.

What is the best alternative to Clear Magic?

R: As many know Clear Magic is now not available in Canada but also the American product has undergone an ingredient change making it less effective and easy to clip and work with. So many have begun using and experimenting with other products. So far to my knowledge nothing is quite as good as the “original” Clear Magic product. However two of the products that many are using and liking the results with are “Got2b Blasting Freeze Spray” and “Aussie Instant Freeze Hair Spray Fixatif”. I’m sure other products are being used with great results however a consistently liked product like “original” Clear Magic has yet to blanket the show industry.

R: Pour devenir juge officiel au Canada, on nous encourage et on s’attend à ce qu’on s’inscrive à une école de jugement pour obtenir les connaissances nécessaires et les capacités de parler en public, non seulement pour placer adéquatement et efficacement les expositions d’animaux laitiers mais aussi pour avoir la capacité de donner les raisons nécessaires pour exprimer la raison pourquoi on a jugé la classe de cette façon. Lorsqu’on juge du bétail, typiquement on garde en tête la carte de pointage de l’animal, Que ce soit une classe de génisse ou de vache en lactation, la carte de pointage reflète le poids de chaque trait dans le corps de l’animal. Les juges officiels ont un animal idéal en tête qui reflète ces traits et évaluent la classe devant eux en regardant et plaçant les animaux en ordre des attributs physiques qu’ils possèdent. Par exemple, lorsqu’on juge des animaux en lactation, le plus gros des points, 42 % est donné au système mammaire en général donc c’est le point de départ que la plupart des juges utilisent lorsqu’ils regardent une classe. Quelles sont les meilleures familles de vaches d’exposition et quels taureaux, anciens et nouveaux, sont les meilleurs pour produire des familles de vaches d’exposition? – Coralie S.

R: Au fil des ans et des générations, de grandes familles de vaches d’expositions émergent et évoluent pour représenter les besoins toujours changeants de l’industrie laitière et les styles de régie. Je ne soulignerai pas ou ne choisirai pas une famille parce que j’en oublierai surement une qui a eu un impact sur l’industrie ou sur notre propre troupeau. Par contre, les familles et les animaux qui typiquement laissent le plus gros et le plus persistant impact sur la race Jersey, sont la constance des familles avec une production adéquate et, bien entendu, de bonnes composantes mais aussi des animaux qui transcendent la caractère de la race complètement. Les animaux avec une structure de côtes exceptionnelle, une poitrine et une croupe larges sont habituellement celles avec des pis exceptionnels et une capacité de production. Donc, en choisissant des taureaux nous vérifions que les taureaux soient supérieurs pour la conformation mais qui ont aussi des niveaux adéquats de gras et de protéine. Rappelez-vous que d’élever des animaux exceptionnels prend de la patience car les améliorations générationnelles sont nécessaires pour obtenir l’animal que vous voulez créer.

Quel sont vos meilleurs conseils pour un débutant qui veut participer aux expositions?

R: Si vous êtes une jeune personne, participer au club 4-H ou Jeunes ruraux est de loin le meilleur moyen de s’initier aux premières étapes et aux processus requis pour exposer. Non seulement vous en apprendrez plus au sujet des programmes d’exposition, mais établirez des amitiés durables. À part les 4-H, vous pouvez aussi vous présenter à quelqu’un de votre entourage qui participe déjà aux expositions. Plusieurs personnes qui exposent sont toujours prêtes et recherchent de jeunes gens qui sont intéressés aux expositions pour les aider à préparer les animaux, pas seulement aux expositions mais aussi à la ferme.

Quels sont les éléments clés à rechercher lorsqu’on choisit une vache/génisse pour une exposition? Quelle sorte de préparation doit ont prendre pour les différentes expositions selon le temps de l’année?

R: Plusieurs choses entrent en ligne de compte lorsqu’on choisit des animaux pour une exposition. Premièrement, on recherche des animaux qui ont une belle apparence générale, tant du côté laitier que de la race. Puis on décortique l’animal, évaluant la qualité des pieds et membres, la structure des côtes et de la croupe. Bien sûr, si l’animal est en lactation, on étudie le système mammaire et le stage de lactation pour s’assurer que l’animal sera dans une condition appropriée lorsque se tiendra l’exposition. Préparer un animal à la ferme pour une exposition peut prendre des semaines, des mois et parfois des années pour que l’animal se transforme en une vache gagnante d’exposition. Par contre, pour une exposition à venir cet été ou cet automne, vous choisirez typiquement un animal et commencerez la préparation lorsque vous avez décidé qu’ils sont prêts pour l’exposition. Une fois la sélection faite, commencez par les laver, les tondre et tailler leurs sabots à intervalles réguliers. L’entraînement au licou et à la marche peut se faire aussi souvent que désiré pour entraîner l’animal. Rappelez-vous que l’exposition se gagne avant d’entrer dans l’arène. 80 % du succès d’une exposition se fait dans la planification et la préparation à la ferme et le dernier 20 % est dans la préparation à l’exposition et dans l’arène.

Quelle est la meilleure alternative à Clear Magic?

R: Comme plusieurs le savent, Clear Magic est maintenant disponible au Canada mais ce produit américain a connu un changement dans sa composition ce qui le rend moins efficace et moins facile à tondre et à travailler. Plusieurs ont donc commencé à utiliser et expérimenter avec d’autres produits. À ma connaissance, rien n’est aussi efficace que le Clear Magic ‘original’. Par contre, voici deux produits que plusieurs utilisent avec de bons résultats : Got2b Blasting Freeze Spray et Aussie Instant Freeze Hair Spray Fixatif. Je suis certains que d’autres produits sont utilisés avec de bons résultats par contre un produit aussi apprécié que le Clear Magic ‘original’ n’a pas encore fait sa place dans l’industrie des expositions.
