Party time again as the Carnival begins IT’S Carnival time again - that time of the year when Santa Cruz plays host to one of the great fiestas in the world. In fact, this colourful, never-to-beforgotten event, is rated second only to the incredible Rio de Janeiro show, and thousands of people from all over the world travel to Tenerife every year for a taste of the excitement and the atmosphere. The official Carnival fortnight is publicised as being staged between 15-26th February, when the streets of Santa Cruz are lined with excited spectators in their tens of thousands. But the month-long show actually began on Wednesday evening with the presentation of candidates for the Carnival Queen, the Junior Queen and the ThirdAge Queen (for old-timers). That took place in the beautiful setting of the Flower Clock García Sanabria Park, and was followed last night (Thursday) by the first phase of the Children Murgas (musical theatre and comedy) contest at the Recinto Ferial (Fairground). This competition, featuring such incrediblynamed groups as the Frikywikys, Retorciditos, Chinchositos, Melositos and sofocados, continues tonight and tomorrow evening. There is then a gap until Wednesday evening, when the Third Age Carnival Queen is selected at the same venue. And next Sunday (5th Feb) is the coronation of the Children’s Carnival Queen there as well. There’s something for everyone every evening from then on until the main Carnival Queen is chosen at a grand gala on 15th February at the Recinto Ferial. Two days later sees the main Carnival Parade, which

starts from the Plaza de la Republica Dominicana at 8pm and moves on through various areas, finishing on the Avenida Francisco La Roche. And the Carnival Queens and their entourages, wearing spectacular, mind-boggling costumes, provide a magnificent spectacle. This year’s theme is ‘Flower Power’ and the competition for the bestdecorated floats and cars takes place, followed by dancing to the music of leading orchestras and Djs in the Plaza de la Candelaria and del Principe. At the beginning and end of the second Carnival week, scantily-clad dancers in flamboyant costumes salsa their way through the streets, accompanied by the thumping beat of Latino drums. The closing parade arrives on 21st February, and the famed Burial of the Sardine ceremony takes place the next day. Tr a d i t i o n a l l y, many men dress as women for this event, but just about everyone dons fancy dress anyway, and many of the regulars are seen sporting a different outfit every night. But if you are planning on going for just for one night to experience the thrill and excitement, large supermarkets and all the Chinese warehouses are already stocked with plenty of Carnival gear for children and adults alike. If you want to sample the real downto-earth spirit of the Carnival away from all the glamour, however, then stick around until after midnight. That’s when the street parties start, with thousands upon thousands of revellers enjoying music of all types. And if you’ve got the stamina, you will still be there as dawn breaks!

Abama splendour on the way PEDRO MARTIN, the Mayor of Guia de Isora, has announced that planning permission for the huge residential development project next to the Abama Hotel is now in its final stages. The 45-million-euro project will feature a series of luxury chalets and villas next to the upmarket hotel.

Blooming good photo contest SANTIAGO del Teide’s 15th annual scent-filled Almond Blossom Trail takes place tomorrow (Saturday), and the accompanying photographic contest closes on 21st February. It is open to all non-professional snappers over the age of 18, regardless of nationality or country of residence. Maximum submission is two photos, which must have a title. Government sparks fiesta fracas

PATIENTS in the hallways, beds lined up like Tetris pieces. That’s the description in the Spanish Press of the current day-to-day situation in the emergency departments of two hospitals on the island, which have been the main victims of the cuts and the measures taken in recent months by the Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands government.

Patients are still flocking to the health centers and hospital complexes but there are fewer staff. "In the Hospital de La Candelaria more than 300 beds are blocked, and the HUC is experiencing a similar situation," said Patricia Hernandez, a delegate of the Federation of Inter-Health Canaria (IC). The misuse of the facilities has led to the hospital emergency room being in a state of "collapse", a situation that could have been solved long ago "if other perspectives had been considered." Along the same lines the message from UGT and the Medical Association (CESM) in the Canary Islands, whose secretary

TEIDE charity's helping hand JIM HUNTER, from English charity TEIDE, was recently contacted by the Director of Hogar Chindia, in Valle San Lorenzo.

Hogar Chindia, managed by Arona Council, is a home for seven children, aged between 10 to 16 years, who have been taken away from their parents. It is because the Social Services consider them to be incapable of looking after their own children. But Arona Town Hall has been affected by the financial crisis, as have many government departments, and it could not afford to replace the fixtures and fittings at Hogar Chindia, which were in poor condition.

That’s where TEIDE (Tenerife Excursions for Infirm and Disadvantaged Children Exchange) stepped in with a fund-raising scheme. Rex Mallett carried out his regular Osteoporosis Screening Sessions both in the South of Tenerife and also in England, donating all proceeds to the charity, So when Jim’s TEIDE was asked to help provide new cupboards, desks and chairs, as well as a computer and television for Hogar Chindia, he had sufficient funds to purchase everything. The debate continues, but no solution has yet been found.

Las Rosas soon to be completed Mayor of Arona, José Alberto González Reverón, has announced that Las Rosas urban park will be completed in 6 months time. The park has at its disposal a 200.000 euro budget for the much needed recreational and green area.

Granadilla industrial estate expands Expansion plans continue at Granadilla industrial estate with a 3.2million euro agreement which has just been signed for phase 2 of the 700 hectare industrial park set to house existing, expanding companies and encourage new business and industry, creating jobs within small and medium sized enterprises.

Going Retro Retro means, “a thing imitating something from the past. A nostalgic style or fashion in dress, music etc.” (Oxford Concise Dictionary) It seems if you can’t think of an original idea then go back to what they used to do, in this case 1939. At the moment every online gift store and tourist trinket shop has an item which plays on the words of “Keep Calm and Carry on” which was actually a motto from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Information on how the population should go about their daily lives in wartime, WWII. Today however the motto appears on everything from mugs, tea towels to bath salts and t shirts! The original booklet detailed how to keep fit in wartime Britain, much of the common sense information is as relevant now, than it was then. Does that raise the question then was the British population healthier then than now? First printed in 1943, How to Keep Well in Wartime was produced to set out the ‘simple safeguards, the common sense rules, and the good habits which we can make part and parcel of our everyday lives’. As relevant today as it was then, this candid and amusing book offers advice on everything from eating and drinking, to exercise and good health. Keep Calm and Carry On was a poster produced by the British government in 1939 during the beginning of the Second World War, intended to raise the morale of the British public in the event of invasion. Seeing only limited distribution, it was little known. The poster was actually rediscovered in 2000 and has been re-issued by a number of private sector companies, and used as the decorative theme for a range of other products. There are only two known surviving examples of the poster outside government archives.

The poster was initially produced by the Ministry of Information in 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War. It was intended to be distributed in order to strengthen morale in the event of a wartime disaster. 2,500,000 copies were printed, although the poster was distributed only in limited numbers. The designer of the poster is still not known to this day. The poster was third in a series of three. The previous two posters from the series, "Freedom Is In Peril. Defend It With All Your Might" (400,000 printed) and "Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution Will Bring Us Victory" (800,000 printed) and were issued and used across the country for motivational purposes, as the Ministry of Information assumed that the events of the first weeks of the war would demoralise the population. According to Wikipedia, “In 2000, a copy of the "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster was rediscovered in Barter Books, a second-hand bookshop in Alnwick, Northumberland.” Since Crown Copyright expires on artistic works created by the UK government after 50 years, the image is now in the public domain. However, in August 2011 it was reported that a UK based company Keep Calm and Carry On Ltd had registered the slogan as a Community trade mark and issued a takedown request against a seller of Keep Calm and Carry On products. Perhaps the solution to your gift quest is then to bypass the consumerism copies and purchase instead the book, which has been reprinted by the Imperial War Museum. Cultural courses available in Arona

THE municipality of Arona is offering a total of 27 courses and workshops in all its cultural centers.

The courses begin in February, six months later than planned due to budgetary constraints. The mayor and councillor for culture of the municipal-

ity of Arona, Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron and Miguel Angel Mendez, respectively, presented the range of courses and workshops to the Board of Culture for 2012. Mendez explained, the courses start at February after six months of paralysis "for budgetary reasons," and people who are interested in registering can

do so at the offices of the cultural center of Los Cristianos, from 9.00 to 14.00 and 16.00 to 21.00. On offer are 27 courses and workshops, covering a wide range of topics, including new technologies, languages, health, cooking, theatre, dance and photography, among others. Mayor of Arona, Jose Al-

berto Gonzalez Reveron, encouraged citizens to "take advantage of cultural offerings that arise from the area of culture, as it is very diverse and of high quality" and said that "the council has a historical commitment in the field of culture, both from the standpoint of supply, as the facilities and infrastructure."

New link road Work on the new road from Adeje to Santiago del Teide, part of the "insular ring" will be finished in late December this year, but will be in operation for the first quarter of 2013.

This was announced by the President of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, on a visit to one of the tunnels of El Bicho, Santiago del Teide. Rivero stressed the importance of this route of 27 kilometers, with a budget that is close to 200 million euros for the communications link between north and south. "It's a step towards improving connectivity and competitiveness on the island," he said. In his view "it is very important to the island to improve communications and close the ring so that everyone in Tenerife is able to access

work easily, and the south of the island is an example of a workplace because of its tourist character." According to Rivero, this is an opportunity to "provide equal opportunities for Tenerife." Rivero was accompanied on this visit by the President of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, Minister for Roadworks, Jose Luis Delgado, and the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Domingo Berriel and several technicians. Also present were the Mayors of Santiago del Teide and Guia de Isora, Juan Damian Gorrin and Pedro Martin, respectively. The remaining section of the ringroad, Realejos-Icod and Erjos - the north are still undergoing technical inspection The new road has two lanes in each direction from Armeñime (Adeje) to Tejina (Guía de Isora) and to the port of Fonsalía. The remainder to

Santiago del Teide has three lanes. The El Bicho tunnels cross the mountain in Santiago del Teide to prevent the occupation of more land. One of the tunnels is finished and the other is "on target" said Rivero. With the new road distance between Armeñime to Santiago del Teide (currently 26km) is reduced to 20kms. It will take between 10 and 12 minutes to complete this route currently done in about 35 minutes, according to technical data. The works have required between 70 structures between viaducts, overpasses and underpasses. Berriel said that while the new road is a wide-ranging project environmental details have been considered The project has taken more than 5 million cubic meters of excavation, 300,000 cubic meters of concrete and over 10 million kilos of steel, explained the engineers.

Tenerife Tourism launches sponsorship opportunity Tenerife Tourism has initiated a competition for the sponsorship of an event involving promotion of the island as a tourist destination. The deadline for submitting nominations is February 3rd.

First Vice President and Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, stresses that the objective is "to generate notoriety and enhance the tourism image of the island, while consolidating the position of Tenerife tourism in the main travel markets ". The sponsorship event has to be held on the island between May and August 2012, it may be of a sporting, cultural, musical or other nature but must achieve a strong media impact in countries where Tenerife receives most of its tourists, such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Russia, Italy, Nordic

countries as well as Spain. Proposals submitted should ensure media coverage on television, radio and in print to reach at least 80 percent of the population of each of these countries. Among the award criteria contained in the contract documents must include, among others, the generation of synergies between the tourism sectors, cultural and sport on the island, the diffusion in social networks and the Internet

plus tourist packages that can increase the influx of tourists to Tenerife and the inclusion of the name of the island in the event. Magpies in Tenerife Earlier this week Premier League football team Newcastle United held an extensive and exhausting training session at Tenerife Top Training in Adeje. The squad arrived on the island late on Saturday evening

following their defeat away to Fulham. In Adeje, councillors for sport and tourism, respectively, Adolfo Alonso and Rafael Dolado, made a courtesy call to welcome the players to the municipality. They presented the Newcastle coach with two football tops from Adeje's Football

School as a symbol of union, which were gratefully received by the team. Alonso said that "in Adeje we are encouraging prestigious teams to come to our town and train because that way we hope to motivate our young people to become involved in sporting activities."

Granadilla track is not on track Councillor Esteban Gonzalez and Councillor of Sports for Granadilla, Marcos Gonzalez, met this week in San Isidro to address the "incomprehensible" delay that is occurring with the project of Granadilla’s race track.

Esteban Gonzalez argued that they "are aware" of the crisis and the current needs of the public but aside from that fact there are other priorities such as the South Hospital, he noted that public expenditure on the circuit has already been made and the purchase of the land has been "a great public investment." He also added that the relevant projects for environmental impact and sustainability of the circuit are also available "so we believe that there is no reason not to put the project out for tender to private investment." Representatives of the motor world and local officials say if the excuse given by the Cabildo is the added cost of 10million euros for the motorway links to the circuit then that "monetary amount should be added to the cost of tender to be assumed by that private initiative"

In this sense, the Presidents of the teams say the racetrack is not only a sports project, which would be a "big boost" to the various specialities of the racing world (motorcycles and cars), with a large number of fans in Tenerife. Head of Sport, Marcos Gonzalez, insisted that the implementation of this infrastructure would provide a boost to the area, especially from an economic and tourism angle. "It can be a magnet for tourism specialising in speed sports, attracting brands in the industry and counting on the presence of new models and test vehicles. To all of this, add the weather, hotel facilities in the south of the island, which would allow vehicle trials in winter, a time when low temperatures prevail in central Europe.” President of the Federation of Automobiles in Tenerife, Benito Rodriguez, believes that after four years with hardly any progress "we are not willing to wait." Therefore, the Presidents of the teams and federations and the councillors, Esteban Gonzalez and Mark Gonzalez, have requested an appointment with the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife to address the matter further.

New Citizens Advice Bureau has opened in Los Cristianos President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, inaugurated the new Citizens Advice Office in Edificio La Verodal, Los Cristianos this week.

Accompanied by the local mayor, José Reveron, and the Councillor for Electronic Administration and Information, Magaliz Lopez, stressed "the importance of this step forward is to give a better quality of life to citizens of this area of the island." The office has a professional team composed of four experts, including specific attention, plus a multilingual manager, this structure also exists in other offices of the island such as La Orotava

and Icod, and facilitates fluent dialogue with the administration of non-Spanish speaking people, both tourists and residents. The public opening hours are from 08:00 to 18:00, Tuesdays and Thursdays continuously, and from 08:00 to 14:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and this facilitates relationships between the government and citizens. Ricardo Melchior referred to the fiber optic cable stressing "we can now contact everyone. This makes the quality of the information, the service we provide even better. " In 2011, the number of citizens attended in the registry branch offices or CSC offices- "Cabildo de Tenerife al servicio del ciudadano" - has exceeded 124,000, addressing procedures all kinds.

The Citizens Advice Network has 4 offices in the metropolitan area (2 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 2 in La Laguna), 4 offices in the North, Tacoronte, La Orotava, Icod de Los Vinos and El Teno Rural Park as well as 3 in the Southern Zone, in Güimar, Los Cristianos (Arona) and Guia de Isora, all equipped with computer stations for processing information directly available to citizens. Panic in Los Gigantes On Wednesday a container fell onto the safety net on the beach in Los Gigantes - Los Guíos, in the municipality of Santiago del Teide. The incident forced the evacuation of bathers on the beach. The emergency services were called at 17:00, when the CECOES recorded a call from the local police. The Police forces mobilised together with the volunteer fire brigade from Santiago del Teide who were tasked with moving the object. Early indications seem to lean toward the idea that the

object was a refuse container which was thrown intentionally from the top of the cliff, over a fence of about three feet high. On this occasion fortunately no one was injured, unlike the rock

fall that happened on the same beach on the 1st November 2009 killing two people. Following this tragic incident, fencing and mesh was installed on the Los Gigantes cliffs.

Dumped cars are an eyesore A CAR RENTAL company, which appears to have ceased trading, is causing uproar because it has abandoned 39 cars on Avenida San Francisco in Los Cristianos.

The blissful area is near the Guaza Mountain, close to hotels and apartments, and the vehicles have been there for three months. They are now extremely dirty and have also been vandalised. The first 15 cars are at the top of the Los Cristianos entrance road, outside a relatively-new housing development, Mesetas del Mar, and further down there are 22 cars opposite Castle Harbour. Most of the hub caps, wheels and badges are missing off the cars, which have scraped paint and dents

On Wednesday a container fell onto the safety net on the beach in Los Gigantes - Los GuĂos, in the municipality of Santiago del Teide. The incident forced the evacuation of bathers on the beach. The emergency services were called at 5pm, when the CECOES recorded a call from the local police. The Police forces mobilised together with the volunteer fire brigade from Santiago del Teide, who were tasked with moving the object.

The penalty placed on each car states a minimum fine of just over 300 euros, although the longer they are left, the more the fine will increase, leading up to around 30,000 euros. A passer-by from another rental company said the cars were embargoed by a finance company and that they did belong to car rental company Auto Lang, which has closed its four offices on the island, having traded since 1976. The Auto Lang website has been taken down, and Canarian Weeklyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attempts to contact them by telephone were to no avail.

Panic in Los Gigantes Early indications seem to lean toward the idea that the object was a refuse container which was thrown intentionally from the top of the cliff, over a fence of about three feet high. On this occasion no one was injured, unlike the rock fall that happened on the same beach on the 1st November 2009, killing two people. Following this tragic incident, fencing and mesh was installed on the Los Gigantes cliffs.

Simon Cowell is joining forces with Will Smith to produce a new talent competition to find the world's best DJs.

Not content with his current talent show empire in Britain and the US, of American Idol, The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, the 52-year-old has decided to expand and open the floor to DJs. "DJs are the new rock stars, it feels like the right time to make this show," he said in a statement. The new format will be co-produced by SYCO, Cowell's joint venture with Sony

Music, and Overbrook Entertainment, a US entertainment company founded by Hollywood star Will Smith. Sony Pictures Television will also be in on the act, which has been in development for more than a year. Smith's wife Jada PinkettSmith has been involved for Overbrook. The programme is yet to be named but will be broadcast in the UK and US and Simon Cowell has put in writing: "I will NOT be judging this show."

The radiation storm has caused dramatic displays of the aurora borealis (the Northern lights) but there are also fears it could disrupt communications, damage satellites and cause power grid outages at northern latitudes. Atlanta-based Delta said it had altered the course of some flights between Detroit and Asia to avoid communications problems from the storm. Airline spokesman Anthony Black said. "We are undergoing a series of solar bursts in the sky that are impacting the northern side of the world. "It can impact your ability to communicate," he said. "So, basically, the polar routes are being flown further south than normal." The event started late on Sunday with a moderatesized solar flare that erupted near the centre of the Sun, said Doug Biesecker, a physicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospher-

ic Administration Space Weather Prediction Center. "The flare itself was nothing spectacular, but it sent off a very fast coronal mass ejection travelling four million miles per hour," he said. A coronal mass ejection releases huge amounts of electromagnetic radiation and matter, causing a geomagnetic storm as it hits Earth. Astronomer Dr David Whitehouse told Sky News the storm, which is now considered the largest since

2003, could cause some disruption to radio communications, but people need not be concerned. "This was a big solar storm, the biggest one for years and that will affect satellites; it will cause some satellite computers to reboot, it will cause some communications difficulties in northern latitudes, but it's not big enough to cause problems to sat-nav and things like that. "There are problems from solar storms but you need

bigger ones than this to worry most people." Spectacular sightings of the Northern lights were reported across the north of Britain, as far south as Northumberland, after the solar flare on Sunday. The auroras - which are usually only spotted over Norway, Iceland and other places further north - could be visible in Scotland and the North of England again on Wednesday if the skies are clear, according to astronomers.

Facebook free ads FACEBOOK has pledged to give away £4.2m in free advertising as part of a bid to help British and European businesses make the most of social media.

Climate change Flooding will be Britain's biggest climate risk with almost five million people to be affected over the next 100 years, a report has revealed.

Heavier rainfall predicted in a warmer atmosphere will cause more floods, worsening damage and disruption to infrastructure and property, it said. The Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) found that if no further action is taken to address climate change, the annual flood damage bill to buildings could rise to £12bn by the 2080s, compared to the current costs of £1.2bn. And at-risk properties may face issues with the availability of insurance and mortgages, the report said. The research, published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, highlights the top 100 effects of global warming and their expected impact on the UK. This is a groundbreaking piece of research which means we have a much better understanding now of the risks, but also the opportunities, that climate change will bring. It is the first comprehensive assessment of the risks of climate change to Britain - and is designed to act as a planning tool for government, local authorities and the private sector. The Government-funded study also predicts extreme weather events - like the 2007 summer floods and the snowfall last year that cost £600m a day - will increase significantly. It projected that the number of days a year temperatures will rise above 26C will jump from 18 days to between 27 and 121 days in London by the 2080s, adding that the higher summer temperatures could see heat-related deaths rise to 6,000 by the 2050s. Other risks include an increase in water shortages,

with a potential deficit of between 773 and 2,570 million litres of water a day in the Thames river basin - up from a shortfall of 59 million litres a day currently. Rising sea levels could hit natural assets such as beaches and buildings including tourist attractions and historical monuments, with knock-on impacts for businesses that rely on them. But it is not all doom and gloom. Warmer winters will reduce the number of deaths caused by the cold by 24,000 by the 2050s. The report also foresees opportunities to grow new crops as well as to open up a new container shipping route through the melted Arctic ice, improving trade links with Asia and the Pacific. Secretary of State for Defra, Caroline Spelman, told Sky News, "This is a ground-breaking piece of research which means we have a much better understanding now of the risks, but also the opportunities, that climate change will bring. "And it will allow us now to develop a national adaptation plan so we can deal with those risks and take advantage of those opportunities by working together with everyone to deal with this challenge in the future." However, critics say there are too many uncertainties to take the assessment seriously. Lord Lawson from the Climate Change Foundation described the predictions as "guesstimates" that are based on computer model projections that are "wrong". "No one knows what will happen over the next 100 years," he added. The report's chief scientific advisor, Bob Watson, said the assessment is "probably the best in the world" but he admitted "there are some uncertainties". The Climate Change Risk Assessment is the first in a series and will be updated every five years.

RBS bonus for chief The chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Stephen Hester, is in line for an annual bonus of less than £1m, a decision that the bank and ministers hope will defuse the intensifying row over his pay.

Sky News has learned that RBS’s directors agreed the payout at a board meeting on Wednesday. The sum remains subject

to the outcome of consultation with UK Financial Investments, the body which manages taxpayers’ 82 per cent stake in RBS. The proposed bonus for Hester of approximately 3m shares, half of his entitlement, will equate to between £800,000 and £950,000. It will be paid entirely in RBS stock and will be deferred for three years. David Cameron, the Prime Minister, has privately made it

clear that he would regard a bonus of more than £1m as unacceptable. In 2010, Hester was awarded an all-share bonus worth just over £2m. Last week, RBS and Mr Cameron denied a newspaper report that the bank’s board was proposing to award Mr Hester a bonus of up to £1.6m. Hester’s bonus has become the focal point of the annual controversy over City pay.

The company's Ad Boost programme will give 50,000 small businesses across the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy up to 100 euros (£83.16) each of ad credits to use on its site. It will also run a series of UK-wide events over the next six months with the British Chambers of Commerce to advise small businesses how to effectively create a Facebook page and engage customers. For example, if a user becomes a "fan" of the small business or "likes" it on the social networking site, the user's friends will get an update, effectively providing the company the best form of advertising available - an endorsement from someone they know. It follows an announcement by fellow-US company McDonald's to create 2,500 UK jobs, aimed mainly at people under the age of 25. Debbie Forster from the Apps for Good programme said: "There is clearly a digital skills gap in the UK, but this is partly because young people aren't aware of the opportunities out there. "They can't imagine a world without Facebook but don't realise it could be a stepping stone into employment. "Through programmes like Apps for Good, we challenge

young people to think differently about the industry, and show them that just by using technology to solve their everyday problems, they are a developer in the making." Meanwhile, a study by the consultancy firm Deloitte said that Facebook and mobile applications have supported 232,000 jobs across the European Union in 2011, adding £12.7bn across the 27 member states. The Facebook-commissioned research said that the social networking site contributed £2.2bn to the British economy last year and supported 35,200 jobs. Deloitte said the majority of the impact came from 'broad' effects which allow businesses to promote their brand to a larger audience and generate new sales. Facebook's director of policy for the EU, Richard Allen, told Sky News that additional sales of smartphones, tablets and internet access, which allow users could access Facebook, and apps and events have also had an impact.

Two prisoners have escaped in one week A prisoner who has escaped before is on the run again after two officers were threatened at gunpoint and forced to release him as he was being taken to hospital.

Andrew Farndon, 26, was being transported from HMP Highpoint to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds after he suffered a knife wound at the prison. Reports said he had cut himself earlier on Wednesday at the prison in Stradishall, near Newmarket. It was decided Farndon's injuries needed hospital treatment. He arrived at West Suffolk Hospital in a taxi with one male and one female police guard, who he was handcuffed to. Outside A&E, a gunman appeared and pointed his weapon at the female guard's head, insisting Farndon be freed. She removed the handcuffs. The pair then ran off across the car park and may have escaped in a dark-coloured vehicle. Farndon is the second prisoner to escape from custody this week. Murder suspect John Anslow is still on the run after the prison van he was being transported in was ambushed by three masked men on Monday. Suffolk Police said they were

contacted just before 7pm by the hospital's A&E staff who reported they could see a man with a gun outside. They received a second call shortly after from the escorting prison officers, who said they had a gun pulled on them by a man who had confronted them. It is not the first time Farndon, who is serving time after he was found guilty of grievous bodily harm (GBH) following a brutal hammer attack that left his victim with a fractured skull, has escaped from custody. During a court appearance in connection with the GBH charge, he leapt from the dock at Coventry Crown Court and went on the run from court for a time. However, he was classified as a category C prisoner meaning he was considered

unlikely to make a determined escape attempt. Both guards who were escorting him have been questioned by police. No-one was injured. A Prison Service spokeswoman said a full inquiry would follow. Former convict Mark Leech, editor of the national prisoners' newspaper ConVerse, said questions need to be answered about how both men were able to escape. He suspects mobile phones were being used by inmates to plan events. He said: "How is it that security intelligence at these prisons missed completely both of these clearly pre-planned escapes?" Members of the public are advised not to approach either of the men but to call police immediately if they are seen.

Repercussions of tourism law I HAVE received several emails from readers in recent weeks, and I have picked out a couple, complete with answers, to share with you. Dear Mariano, I have read your article in Canarian Weekly, dated 13/01/12, regarding the lettings law, and I would like to know what happens when a landlord does not want to deal with a tourist activity, but wants to rent his/her property on a short-term basis? These owners can deal with rental agreements according to the Letting Contract Law or Civil Code (in these cases according to Tourism Law, the tenant changes his address) I am not clear about the last item in brackets ( …the tenant changes his address). I would

be grateful if you would explain this in more detail. What is the definition of shortterm renting? Could I privately rent out my property for 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks under Spanish Civil Law (separate contract for each tenancy) without the need to register with the Tourist Board under Canarian Administrative Law? I look forward to hearing from you. AA Thank you for your interest in the matter and for giving me the opportunity of extending my article. It is difficult to summarise in a column technical issues of regulations, which are normally very long. That is why is so important that the readers co-operate with queries or suggestions. In this case, because of the translation of the law into Spanish, the meaning of the article needs

special attention. “Changing of address” means “changing of residence” (he moves his place to live). In other words, in a tourism renting agreement, the tenant does not change his address/ residence. That is why tourism renting agreements are short-term. Instead, the Rental Agreement Law contracts are normally longterm (more than six months, although the definition of long-term is not necessary such period of time). Hence, the definition of shortterm lease would be the one in which the tenant does not move residence because normally, in 2, 3 or 4 months, there is no residence changed. This answers your second question: 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks letting contract would not be considered long-term lease. The question

would be: is this short-term lease subject to the tourism law? The matter is not easy to understand and explain. These types of contracts have two sides:. 1) Irrespective of the duration, one side of these contracts are governed by the private law (civil law) which is the side of the contract referring to the intentions of both parties (landlord and tenant). In private law the parties agree price, duration, deposit and other circumstances in which the Public Law is not involved. 2) On the other side, the Public Law regulates other aspects of the letting contracts. For instance, taxation rules or tourism law rules. The Authorities do not intervene in the private agreement, but they check that the said contracts are not in breach of law. It is completely feasible that you rent your property for less than a month (from the private law point of view) but you have to consider how this contract affects the public law. Bear in mind that Tourism Law also mentions the unity of operation (unity of running letting agreements). This means that there should be only one company per complex dealing with all renting agreements. The question is whether this Tourism Law is fair or not, or whether it is in breach of other rules exceeding the contents of this column.

Accion pledges to carry on with the good work ACCION del Sol has now been open for more than six years, and almost 3,000 dogs have been brought into the refuge via Protection Civil.

Every dog has been castrated/ sterilised, deflead, micro-chipped, passported, fully inoculated and treated for heartworm. And the staff have worked extremely hard to find loving homes to give the dogs a new start. This year’s pledge from Marion and her staff is to continue working relentlessly to curtail the dogs’ plight here in Tenerife. This month has already seen many new dogs brought from the various municipalities who collaborate with Accion del Sol, which is sponsored by German charity Aktiontier. In addition, students from Germany are coming over to be introduced to animal welfare, and they will be working closely with the staff. Accion also plan to keep on with its children’s education programme, and visit more

schools in the south, as well as welcoming others to the refuge. Staff will have no time to rest on their laurels because they face a busy year ahead, with four big fund-raising events to organise. If you feel you could help in some way, by dog-walking, assisting dogs’ flights to Germany, maybe providing a few spare towels or sheets for the dogs, or have some spare toys for them, please contact the refuge on 922 778 630. It takes place just before the big day, on 11th February, starting at 7.30 for 8pm, and the evening, complete with threecourse meal, costs just 20 euros. The Lions had a busy prefestive period, and Club Secretary Ralph Solomon has only just found the time to let people know all about their recent adventures. There was a Christmas Party on 13th December for AMISUR and carers at Patio del Coral, in Silencio, while the 18th was reserved for the Club’s Christmas Fayre, which was a real fun afternoon. Members were able to put their feet up two days before Christmas Day when they were invited to AMISUR’s Noel Festivities. Local entertainers Jan and Colin gave up their time to put on a show, and everyone tucked in to local Canarian bits and

pieces, and home-made cakes. Then it was back to business, and January’s Lions Club meeting saw them badge two new members - and plan the events leading up to the President’s Night in June. Don’t forget that the San Miguel Lions’ Charity Shop and Book Shop are still open every day from 10am until 2pm. February’s Club meeting will see another member in their ranks, and President Susan Solomon hopes to encourage more people to join the Lions before the end of her term. Dine out and make a new set of friends

A WEEKLY dining club, which flourished for about nine years in Los Cristianos before falling victim to the recession, is being revived tomorrow (Saturday).

Nancy Hall, a regular for many of those years, remembers those times fondly and is hoping to attract singles, couples, holiday-makers and residents to her new Diners’ Club. Thank’s for everything IVE been thinking so hard over the last few weeks about writing this. And everything I come up with does not seem to be right. So Ive decided just to write from the top of my head.

On 7th July 2006, I arrived on Tenerife after a long day. Flying from Belfast, then a five-hour wait in Manchester airport for my flight to the island. I described it a few years ago in my weekly column as the longest, most-upsetting wait ever. I really didn’t know what was in store for me as I had to get away from Belfast because of a horrible relationship, which resulted in me not being able to be involved in my then girlfriend’s pregnancy. Now, almost six years later, my life has transformed beyond recognition. I have so many people to thank: Strikers Bar, Exiles, Euro Bar and Stellas, and all the residents in Costa del Silencio. They all cottoned on to the fact that I was going through some grief at that time, and I will never forget the kindness they have shown me. It’s not easy having the world taken from under your feet and looking for help from friends, never mind - at that time - complete strangers. I bonded with Mark and Teleri Thornten and David and Sarah Jones on the night of the 2006 World Cup Final. The many happy times driving to and back from the airport still make me laugh. Louise Jones, from Churchill’s Bar, Los Cristianos, for three years’ employment. That was just not a job; it was a total pleasure five days a week, hosting and meeting many new friends. Nobody could ever beat us singing Snow Patrol. In May of 2010, we moved to Chayofa and met my new neighbour, Trixie, who has turned out to be a legend with her stories, always over a Canarian Rum in her hand.

The memories of an everyday conversation will always be in my heart. The many entertainers I have and have not met who do a fantastic job in Tenerife and stuck with it, even in hard times, I salute you and will forever be on your side, as I know what it’s like to struggle just to put a smile on a holidaymaker’s face sometimes. The staff and management of Oasis Fm, who saved my life. If I did not get that call in June of 2006, I seriously would not be on the face of this earth. Canarian Weekly, who kindly allowed me to write whatever was on my mind and, hopefully, through just a few words on a Friday, I made you smile or wonder just once. Linekers in Las Americas, my ideal sponsors for four years. They never complained or questioned my style of broadcasting. The many nights, for some reason, I was treated like royalty by the team - and my friends and family were treated exactly the same. Thank you so much for that. As I look outside and see the sun, it’s sad that this chapter of my life is soon to come to an end. But my heart will always be here. My son, Taylor, was born

in the Green Hospital in July 2010. So my connections and his, with and for Tenerife, are huge. And he will be back to see the people and sights that were the first 18 months of his life. It’s ironic that when I arrived here because I could not be part of a family, I’m now leaving with a family. Kate, the mother of my son, is the most beautiful and kind woman I have ever met in my life. I don’t know how I deserve her, but I’m grateful and thank my lucky stars every day. She gave up everything back home, including a fantastic job, just to be with me, knowing a long-distance relationship would never work. We have had our ups and downs like many, but we have each other. It’s now family time. Finally, to you, the people whom I have spoken to, those who I have not, and those who have listened and read my thoughts in paper and on radio, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m not a religious man, so I will just say that whatever your beliefs, I hope they bring you the happiness I have found. Thank you for the finest six years of my life.

Using CGI and testimonial, the film will recreate a minute-byminute account of the timeline to tragedy, featuring exclusive interviews with survivors, rescuers and world-renowned experts. Using images of the wreck and footage captured by people on board that night, the horror of the sinking will be recounted and analysed. Amid a huge fall in profits, the Japanese games giant Nintendo has announced it will launch a successor to its pioneering Wii console later this year.

The WiiU will be launched in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan in time for the year-end shopping season. But the announcement came as the company posted a 61% drop in quarterly operating profits, and trebled its forecasted losses for this year to £538m. The falls were far worse than market expectations, with Nintendo hit hard by weak sales and the strong yen. The full-year operating loss will be the first since the company started announcing earnings in their current form in 1981. The creator of the Super Mario franchise dominated the video games industry for years with its DS handheld players and Wii home consoles, but is now struggling to keep up with more versatile

Dr Seijiro Takeshita, director of the Japanese investment bank Mizuho International, said that while the exchange rate was a problem for Nintendo, the company has “other problems as well”. “Their next ignition point new hardware - is not in the oven,” he told Sky News. He added that, in future, the firm would probably concentrate more on software because of the intense competition from other hardware devices. It was therefore “worrying” that software sales were weak as this was where “their future lies”, Dr Takeshita said. In more bad news for a country that prides itself on electronics exports, Japan revealed on Wednesday its first annual trade deficit for more than 30 years.

Trees for schools The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has joined forces with online nursery www.treesandhedging. co.uk to offer 2,000 schools five free trees each, in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Between 10th January and 29th February 2012, schools registered to the RHS Campaign for School Gardening can order a set of bare-root 40–60cm tree saplings for just £5.95 postage and packaging. The five trees are wild cherry, crab apple, silver birch, common hornbeam and field maple*. Each tree is native to the UK and has been chosen for its beauty and heritage. The RHS Campaign for School Gardening launched in 2007 now has more than 14,500 schools and other organisations registered to it. Back to basics… WE all have our favourite hair-care routine - our own way to style and look after our hair. But do you have what I call the basics to keep your hair looking and feeling its best? The most essential needs are your shampoo and conditioner, which are the basics of all hair-care routines, because your products should be designed for your hair type. Most people don’t know what type they are (ask you stylist), and people often confuse their hair types and end up using the wrong products. Always use a complementing product, so if your shampoo says dry hair, then use a dry hair conditioner. It seems a simple equation, but lots get this wrong. Another pointer is that you shouldn’t mix brands, so stick to the same ones. Also, your styling products are easy to get wrong, so always check with your stylist regarding the ones that suit your hair. You can guarantee that one of them won’t be suitable for your hair, so always use your time in the salon to ask these sorts of questions. Your styling equipment should also be varied. If you blow-dry your hair, then a good selection of ceramic brushes are essential. Never use a plastic or stiff brush as these rip and tear the hair. The brushes should be flexible, and combing your hair when wet should be done with a large wide-tooth comb. Never use a fine one as your hair is so vulnerable when wet. And your hairdryer should be powerful, yet easy to control, with a cool-shot button to smooth and seal the hair. Never use the nozzle as this

THE former boss of the French company at the centre of a breast implant scandal affecting tens of thousands of women has been arrested.

Jean-Claude Mas, who ran the now-defunct Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), was held at his home in Marseilles shortly before dawn. More than 40,000 women across the UK received PIP implants. Fears have been raised that they could rupture and leak silicone into the body, and pose a cancer risk, because they were filled with non-medical grade silicone can scorch the hair and cause split-ends unless it’s in the right hands. Hair-straighteners should always be used to a minimum, and always with a heat-defence spray. If not, you will fry your hair and cause irreparable damage. When handling your hair wet, please remember NOT to rub or rough it up with a towel after washing. Wrap your hair after shampooing and leave alone for a few minutes, then gently squeeze it dry. Rubbing will break your hair and

leave it tangly and knotty. One final word: having these basic essentials will help not only you but us hairdressers to look after your hair. There’s no point in us caring for your hair if you don’t follow suit at home. If in any doubt about your hair-care routine, then pester your stylist because that’s what we are here for. German and French authorities have said the implants, which were supplied around the world, should be taken out, but women in Britain have been told there is no evidence to support routine removal. Adverts run by the Government in newspapers this month stressed that no link to cancer has been found and there is no clear evidence that they are dangerous. The adverts say patients who had their surgery on the NHS will be able to have the implants removed and replaced free of charge.

Women who had the implants done privately will need to speak to their clinic to see if they will also replace them for free. If a private clinic refuses to do so or no longer exists, the NHS will also pay to remove, but not replace, those implants if the woman’s GP agrees and there is clinical need. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said it believes the implants should be removed as a precaution. Mr Mas, 72, who ran PIP until it was closed in March 2010, has said previously he would not comment publicly on the case.

Heart-attack deaths halved The number of deaths from heart attacks has halved in less than a decade, a new study has found. Researchers say the dramatic decline has been sparked by fewer people smoking and improvements in hospital care. Better management of high blood pressure and high cholesterol has also helped to cut the number of people having an attack. This impressive fall in death rates is due partly to prevention of heart attacks by better management of risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure and cholesterol and due partly to better treatment of heart attack patients when they reach hospital. Writing in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), researchers from the Department of Public Health at Oxford said after studying over 860,000 heart attacks from 2002 to 2010, they found the death rate had fallen by about half. The results showed a 50% drop in the number of men

dying from an attack and a 53% drop in women. The rate of occurrence of heart attacks also fell by 33% in men and 31% in women. Overall, 61% of the people who experienced a heart attack were men, 36% of heart attacks resulted in death and 73% occurred in those aged 65 and over. Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), which funded the study, hailed the fall in mortality rates. “This impressive fall in death rates is due partly to prevention of heart attacks by better management of risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure and choles-

terol and due partly to better treatment of heart attack patients when they reach hospital,” he said. “But far too many heart attack victims still die from a cardiac arrest before medical help arrives.” He said many deaths could be prevented if bystanders performed “hands-only” CPR if they saw somebody suffering a heart attack. The CPR technique is part of a new BHF television campaign - fronted by footballerturned-actor Vinnie Jones - that aims to encourage people to pump on a victim’s chest to the beat of Stayin’ Alive without giving mouthto-mouth.

Which? uncovers dangerous health advice Nutritional therapists are providing expensive dietary advice that could seriously harm patients’ health, finds Which?

The consumer champion sent undercover investigators posing as patients with a range of health problems to 15 consultations with nutritional therapists charging £50 to £80 per visit. They found shocking examples of dangerous advice which could have put patients with real health problems at risk. Six of the visits were rated as ‘dangerous fails’, a further eight were rated as ‘fails’, and only one was deemed a ‘borderline pass’. One researcher, posing as a breast cancer sufferer, was told by her therapist to delay radiotherapy treatment recommended by her oncologist saying they could rid the body of cancer through diet. The nutritional therapist advised her to follow a no-sugar diet for three to six months saying ‘cancer feeds off sugar. By cutting out sugar we have a better chance of the cancer going away’. Which?’s expert panel, including a GP, considered this highly irresponsible and incorrect advice. Another researcher was told by a therapist that if the course of treatment they prescribed for his severe tiredness started to make him feel unwell, it showed the ‘treatment was working’ and he shouldn’t contact his GP as they ‘wouldn’t understand what was happening’. Several of the therapists used non-evidencebased testing to ‘diagnose’ a host of symptoms. One researcher who said she had been struggling to conceive for a year was told after having her iris examined that she had ‘a bit of bowel toxicity’ and a ‘leathery bowel’. According to the expert panel, these are both meaningless terms. Which? also found that some therapists were recommending unnecessary supplements costing up to £70 a month. More worryingly, some of these could have bad side effects, due to the high doses prescribed. Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, says: “We found some shocking examples of irresponsible advice given by nutritional therapists. Our research shows that not only were they a waste of money, but some of their recommendations could seriously harm people’s health. “This is largely a self-regulated industry where anyone can set up and practice as a nutritional therapist, meaning there is no real protection for consumers. While the majority of the therapists Which? visited were registered with the industry body, BANT, our findings show that it is failing to police these practitioners effectively.

in part to declining death rates for serious illnesses. The eye-opening research, for Health-On-Line and YouGov, was carried out over two months, with 2,099 people being questioned. It found the average Briton suffers 133 coughs and colds in a lifetime. Other ailments include 173 tummy upsets, 152 migraines and 106 break-outs of spots. The survey also revealed that Brits will take an average of 43 days off work as a result of stress-related illness. More than half say they are less healthy than they were 10 years ago. Yet people appear unwilling to give up their vices, sinking an average of 5,800 pints or 8,700 glasses of wine over the course of a life-

time. And they are twice as likely to be overweight than the French, Italians or Spanish. A Health-On-Line spokesman said: “No one has ever compiled such a comprehensive prediction of the frequency of our illnesses over a lifetime and, crucially, how long we wait to receive treatment for them. “If there is one key message this report has, it’s this: your own health life story isn’t written yet. Everyone’s is different, but this report provides a prompt to think about which areas most need attention. “By putting safeguards in place to look after health issues that most affect us, we can make a real difference to our long-term wellbeing.”

Brits start the day the French way Brits start the day the French way as sales of French pastries rise.

AS the most important meal of the day, it’s petit dejeuner not breakfast for Brits, as Brioche and Pain au Chocolat rise in the hearts of the nation. According to latest research from Mintel, Brioche sales rose a sweet 25% in 2011 and sales of Pain au Chocolat increased a mouth-watering 14% over the same last two years. Today, French pastries are consumed by almost a quarter (23%) of all Brits, which compares to 24% of those who eat more traditional bread and baked goods. While a good old slice of toast remains the nation’s favourite breakfast, eaten by as many as 81% of Brits for breakfast, many of the more traditional bread

and baked goods have posted slower growth. Hot cross buns, for example, have seen modest growth of 7% over the past two years. Similarly, the market for English Muffins has declined by 3%. The only exception to this trend is the “cream tea favourite”, Scones, rising a positive 19% from 2010. Alex Beckett, Senior Food Analyst at Mintel, said: “French baked goods such as Brioche have recorded impressive value growth, suggesting Brits are developing a stronger taste for sweet bakery goods. The fact that these goods can be eaten at breakfast could suggest that this growth is to the detriment of sliced bread. Bread brands can capitalise on this cosmopolitan trend by introducing a wider variety of

sweet baked goods to their portfolios.” Freshness is the number one priority for the nation’s bread eaters. Despite the

tough economic climate, when it comes to choosing a bread product, 84% look for freshness, while price is a priority for 67% of consumers. And as the nation’s waistline expands and obesity levels rise, just 29% consumers prioritise a healthy bread product. Just as there has been a huge boost in demand for French pastries, Bagels have registered an outstanding performance in the UK morning goods market too - with a spectacular 48% growth in just two years. Overall, sales of speciality bread (including Wraps, Naans, Bagels, Pittas, Baguettes, Chapattis and Paninis) have increased by as much as 8% between 2010 and 2011. While morning goods have increased their share of the market, the total market for bread and morning goods in the UK registered a slow annual growth rate of just 2% between 2010 and 2011. However, bread still holds its status as household essential as it was eaten by 97% of Brits in 2011. “Bread is a quintessential household staple food, eaten by the overwhelming majority of British consumers in the UK last year. However, annual sales partly reflect a slight decline in the share of adults who eat bread daily. Consumers are livening up their food regimes and giving themselves an affordable treat by switching to more diverse types of baked goods. It seems Brits are beginning to show an appreciation of Bagels that New Yorkers would be proud of!” Alex concludes.

Travel trends ABTA – The Travel Association, released their Travel Trends Report 2012, developed in association with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, predicting that holidaymakers will be seeking value for money but not necessarily the cheapest holiday.

While the mid-market is expected to be squeezed, holidays that offer an authentic or specialist experience, and luxury and all-inclusive breaks, are all set to be popular. Mark Tanzer ABTA Chief Executive said: “2011 has been a challenging year but the British public showed resilience when it came to their holidays and we expect a similar picture in 2012. The squeeze on household spending looks set to continue and this is likely to see holidaymakers become more discerning about where they spend their money and what they get for it. This presents a good opportunity for travel companies to offer tailored, specialist and authentic experiences, as well as allinclusive packages for the budget conscious, that provide great value for money.” Some key trends ABTA has identified: • Growth in demand for specialist holidays. Cruising, adventure, exploration, learning and activity holidays are all expected to do well in 2012 as holidaymakers seek new experiences underpinned by value for money. Holidaymakers are also expected to seek out destinations that have a strong and authentic sense of location, in everything from food and setting to excursions and entertainment. • Luxury and budget breaks expected to perform well. With the mid-market coming under the greatest pressure from reductions in household spending, strongest demand is expected to come from the budget and luxury markets in 2012, • Baby boomers set to fuel the market. 10% of over 55s took more

than four foreign holidays in 2011 and this trend is set to continue. • Changes afoot on the high street. High street bookings had a bit of a comeback in 2011; while consolidation saw overall shop numbers decline, bookings were up, with 25% of the public booking their foreign holiday on the high street compared to 17% in 2010*. In 2012 several major travel companies are expanding their high street presence and we can expect to see companies invest in improving the in-store experience. • Tried and tested destinations likely to be popular. In times of economic uncertainty many people put their faith where they know best. Early booking figures for summer 2012 suggest that destinations such as France, Greece, Italy, Spain and the USA will all prove popular next year. • More weddings abroad. One in five couples currently marry overseas with an average saving of £12,500 on a UK wedding; with pressures on budgets and a focus on value for money, many more couples are expected to say ‘I do’ abroad in 2012. In the report ABTA has also identified its “hot destinations” for

2012. A mixture of long, mid and short haul destinations, they give a taste of both holiday favourites and countries offering something different in 2012, including: Jordan; Colombia; Cape Verde and Poland/Ukraine. Lynda St Cooke from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “If you’re looking for a truly authentic travel experience then reading up on the local laws and customs before you go will help you get the best out of your trip. If you want to avoid potential pitfalls such as being arrested for something which isn’t illegal back home, being the victim of a local scam, or unwittingly causing offence to the locals, then checking out Foreign Office travel advice in advance is strongly recommended. Holidaymakers faced a number of issues in 2011 - from natural disasters to significant political events. We can’t always predict when crises will happen which is why British travellers need to be prepared for every eventuality when they go overseas - taking out travel insurance and telling someone back home exactly where you’re going is a good start.”

That record was blown out of the window on Week 27 as no fewer than 15 180s were recorded! Those hitting the old lipstick were: Bubbles from Phoenix, Pete from The Pub, Ian from Titans, Mitch x 2 London from Xtreme, JZ from X-Men, Richard x 3 / Mick / Justyn from Bar 180 A, John / Dave from Cozy Wanderers and Leo from Toscales Tornados. The quality match on the night looked to be at Cozy Wanderers, as Shammy’s 120 finish was replied to by Sonic’s 131 and Kill Bill’s 101. Bar 180 A again swap places with Xtreme Sports Bar and go top after thumping Valle Vikings 1. Xtreme’s Mike Telfer played rubbish, apparently, but it was enough to get a win over Gaffers, while Phoenix put in a fine performance to complete a double whitewash over Barracudart Boys.

Joan won her singles and trebles, aided by Shaz and Evette, to take two legs for the Phoenix Flames, although Division 2 leaders Sundowners won the other six rubbers for a comfortable win. Finally, Ourplace Playgirls recorded their sixth victory of the season with a welldeserved 6-2 triumph over Valle Vikings 2. Brave ocean-rowing girls are also record-breakers! THE five-woman rowing team, who set out from La Gomera in the world’s toughest ocean-rowing race, have broken two world records.

Their fund-raising, 3,000-mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean to Barbados took 45 days, 15 hours and 26 minutes, setting a double world record. They were the first fivewoman team to row any ocean in the world, and they shattered the Atlantic Ocean Row speed crossing by an allfemale crew by four days. “We’re exhausted and relieved,” said Debbie Beadle, who skippered a team comprising Julia Immonen, Kate Richardson, Katie PattinsonHart and Helen Leigh. “We’ve seen nothing but the sea, dolphins and each other for 45 days, so it’s overwhelming to see all our family and friends. “Our bodies are falling apart - we’re waking up with our hands cramped into the rowing position and our backs aching. “We’ve been on dehydrated food and desalinated water for a month-and-a-half, so we can’t wait to have some proper food and an ice-cold cocktail!” The team, who finished fifth overall in the Woodvale Ocean Challenge, sponsored by Talisker Whisky, overcame
