Canaries battling to halt the virus from spreading
Continued from Front
The Local Government is asking for citizens to collaborate, so that these control measures are effective. The Canary Islands Executive outlined on Wednesday, after an extraordinary session of the Governing Council, its plans to prevent the COVID-19 coronavirus from spreading throughout the Islands, following recommendations laid out by the Spanish Ministry of Health. These control measures may change, depending on how the virus evolves. They have been set out by the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System, and have been approved by Canary Islands Executive Committee at its meeting. The main public administrations of the Islands participated in this meeting, including the Canary Islands Federation (Fecai) and the Canary Federation of Municipalities (Fecam), among other public entities and bodies, as well as those of the Local Government. The Canary Islands Executive is asking for the collaboration of citizens, so that all these measures are effective. As such, for the next 15 days, visits to see patients admitted to hospitals in the Canaries are restricted, and the public is asked not to go to health centres, unless it is strictly necessary. In addition, the rotation of health professionals from outside the Islands is sus-
pended, as are the stays of health workers, coming in from outside the Islands. In addition, both theoretical and practical classes in health centres are suspended for the next 30 days. Furthermore, activities in clubs or leisure centres for the elderly are also suspended, as well as their visits to social healthcare centres. Also, students coming from outside the Islands, from both mainland Spain and the rest of the world, on Erasmus or similar programmes, are recommended to remain in isolation at home, and monitor any symptoms. They should also avoid contact with elderly persons, and/or people in a delicate state of health, as well as avoiding social or sporting events with a high concentration of people. School trips are suspended, both in non-university and
Information lines about COVID-19
THE Ministry of Health is maintaining an active toll-free telephone line (900 112 061), from which a nursing team, under the co-ordination of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), will respond to requests for information from the public about the COVID-19. These requests can include prevention measures, possibilities of contagion and false concepts related to the virus. It is also important that people, who believe they might have symptoms related to
the coronavirus (cough, sore throat, fever and feeling of shortness of breath) and have returned in the last 14 days from any areas of risk, or are related to someone who comes from those points, should contact 1-1-2. That means they can avoid going directly to the Primary Care Centres, or Hospital Emergencies. Through this route, samples taken at home will be managed, although the population is also asked to use this resource rationally, and only when the above conditions are met.
university education, for the next two months. Large sporting, social or cultural events in the next three weeks are also suspended, LEADING banks in the UK have announced plans to help customers hit by the coronavirus by offering them mortgage payment “holidays”, while the Bank of England has slashed its interest rate to 0.25% The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and NatWest say their account holders can take a payment break of up to three months. TSB is also relaxing its rules for two months, while Barclays will remove penalty charges, to allow people to access fixedsavings early, and to apply for a temporary increase on their credit-card limit. Santander is introducing a support package for victims, which includes the option to defer, potentially, or reduce any repayments due. High Street rivals Lloyds is earmarking loans amounting to £2 billion, for small and medium-sized companies hit by the virus outbreak. As for Italy, mortgage payments will be suspended across the country as part of measures to soften the economic blow of the virus
cancelled, or will be relocated, with each case being reviewed independently. They may take place in cases that do not involve a high concentration of people, but each event must be relayed to the Canary Islands Government and the Canary Health Department, by the respective Town Halls, where it will analysed, in conjunction with the Spanish Ministry of Health. Co-ordination between the Canary Federation of Municipalities (Fecam) and the Canary Islands Federation (Fecai) is essential, so that officials are aware, in advance, of these types of events being staged in the Archipelago.
activities all off as WE GO TO PRINT:
Following on from Government directives, various things have been cancelled or suspended from today: - Los Cristianos Carnival is cancelled. - Los Gigantes Carnival is suspended. - All education centres, ie schools, colleges, universities, municipal music shools, in the Canaries are closed for 14 days. - All council run municipal activities are suspended for 14 days including sports events. - Municipal libraries are closed for 15 days. - Teatro Guimera in Santa Cruz has cancelled all shows for 15 days. - The Children Of The 80s opening party on Saturday 14th March at Hard Rock Hotel is cancelled. - The Spring Run on Sunday 15th March is postponed until a later date. - I Love Music festival in Costa Adeje on Friday 10th April is cancelled. - Elrow dance festival on Saturday 11th April at Magma is cancelled.
Top UK banks offer mortgage ‘holidays’ for Covid-29 victims on households. Laura Castelli, Italy’s Deputy Economy Minister, said: “Yes, that will be the case, for individuals and households.” Italy’s ABI banking lobby group said lenders would offer debt holidays to small firms and families. But suspending debt payments is not unheard of in Italy. Some small businesses and families were given time off during the financial crisis, before having to repay. Italy has extended its emergency coronavirus measures, which include travel restrictions and a ban on public gatherings, to the entire country. On Monday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte ordered people to stay home and seek permission for essential travel. Italy’s coronavirus death toll yesterday (Thursday) had
jumped to 827, from 366 on Monday, and it is the worsthit country after China. The Italian economy is still being nursed back to health, following the country’s financial crisis a decade ago. In 2019, total production of goods and services was about the same as it was 15 years earlier. What’s more, it was still 4% below the level it reached in 2007, just before the crisis. Unemployment is also a persistent problem, especially among young people. The unemployment rate among under-25s is 28.9%, with only Spain and Greece having higher figures in the EU. In the last two years, Italy has also had to contend with weaker global growth and a slowdown in international trade. In the final quarter of last year, GDP fell by 0.3%.

Teenage rider is seriously hurt after a scooter crash
A 17-YEAR-OLD youth was seriously injured after crashing his scooter into a wall, causing him to be thrown over the protective barrier and into a ravine. The accident happened last Monday at 8.35pm, on the TF-82 in Icod de los Vinos. The Canarian emergency services were notified and the relevant helpers were dispatched to the scene immediately. With the aid of fire-fighters, the teenager was rescued from the precarious area, but he had endured complicated injuries, as well as severe trauma to his head. The Guardia Civil and the Local Police were also at the scene, assisting with the emergency. The youth was made as comfortable as possible, before being rushed to Candelaria Hospital in a specialised, medically-equipped ambulance, for emergency treatment and close observation.
Ex-King’s $100m fortune probed

AS the luxury H10 Costa Adeje Palace’s 14 days of quarantine ended, after five positive cases of coronavirus had been detected there since 24th February, Director Jesús Oramas admitted: “We have been a large family of 900 members. “Everything has been very emotional. We have tried to bring an element of home comforts to a diverse clientele, that included older people, children and pregnant women.” He said the hotel complex would remain open and receive customers straight away “with open arms”. And, surprisingly, he pointed out: “Many have extended their stay and some of those who are already there will stay up to six more months.” Regarding the sanitary measures adopted, to guarantee the safety of the clientele, the director confirmed that in the last three days, the hotel had been disinfected with a deep clean, and that it was “absolutely spotless”. Asked about some of the anecdotes that had been bandied around in the building during these 14 days, Oramas said: “Every day, 20,000 stories emerged, and every minute, something new appeared, from finding a heart pill for a client, to finding nappies for children! Everything has been very emotional.” The experience was in response to health protocols because of coronavirus, with the professionalism of the hotel complex’s workers and health personnel, and with the guests’ affection. “As you went down the corridors, customers hugged you, cheered each other up, and cried together,” he recalled. “One of the gestures we will not forget, are the motivating messages the children wrote and drew on cardboard. “Every day, we were surprised with mood posters that hit different areas of the hotel. Another day, they made a cardboard box, asking for messages of support for the team of workers. “But in the end, it was not messages that fell into the box, but money! More than 2,000 euros were raised in two days, which will be donated to a charity, as decided by my colleagues.” Among the worst moments he experienced on a personal level, the director underlined the communication he received from England, about the death of one guest’s husband. “It was a very hard time,” he said. “She was here with her two children. We were with her at all times, and I can tell you that she has

already booked for next year because, as she told us, you are all “my family”. Already without a police presence or guarded perimeters, under the spectacular pergola that presides over the entrance of the hotel that has been seen around the world, happiness that it is over was evident, and the feeling of a job well done, because all were in high spirits and being congratulated. While the Canaries Emergency Services dismantled tents, tables, chairs and blackboards, a group of nurses hugged and said goodbye with laughter and the occasional tear, as the last tourists came dragging their suitcases on the way to the awaiting buses for the airport. At the door, they were dismissed, personally, by the Head of Reception, shaking hands, the gesture already reflecting the end of sanitary restrictions. Everyone smiled and repeated the same phrase: “Gracias señor” (thank you, sir). The last to leave did not spare
their praise for the staff. “They have not been able to behave better,” said one man, while his wife explained: “There was nothing left but to accept the situation. “Dislike or panic was not going to change things, so we decided to enjoy the facilities and make new friends.” Sanidad General co-ordinator Clara Gironés Bredy said: “The best present we take away from this is the smile of the people, and their look of trust towards us. It has been impressive.” She admitted that one of the critical moments was the coordination of the people leaving, saying: “Each government wanted to repatriate in a different way, and to agree with each consul from the Ministry of Health departments was not easy.” Gironés, who confesses “optimism above all”, will not forget the phrase “we will return to Tenerife” pronounced by the vast majority of clients at their farewell.
On the other hand, Marcela Posca Maina, Director of the Canarian Emergency Service in Tenerife, said: “Initially, we were a little afraid that the confinement produced certain negativity against those who co-ordinated the actions, but it was all contrary to that. “They soon understood the situation, and the relationship between us has been very respectful. Last night (Monday) it was very exciting for us to see them coming out and clapping us.” Among the cases requiring special attention, he recalled a pregnant Latvian tourist, who had travelled alone to Tenerife. “She was very nervous, because the gestational period in which she could fly to return to her country had expired,” he said. Luckily, her embassy was able to process her repatriation, so that she left early. Ramón Pinto, director of Primary Care Nursing, had feelings of “pride and happiness, the two words that summarise our mood”, written all over his face, and he shed a couple of tears as he said goodbye to the hotel staff. “They have had a very bad time, and we’ve all given everything; the teams have responded in a wonderful way,” he said, and showed words of recognition to the “primary” work of psychologists and translators. As everyone finally departed on a bright, sunny Monday afternoon, the joyous sound of the bells from the tower of the church of San Sebastián broke the peace, and brought an historic event in Costa Adeje to an end.

Canary Islands exempt from air-transport tax
THE new air-transport tax, to be implemented by the Spanish Government, will not affect flights to the Canary Islands, said the Finance Ministry. In a letter sent to Canarian Government President Angel Victor Torres, which he published on his Twitter account, Finance Minister Maria Jesus Montero pledged that the new taxation for kerosene would not apply to the Canary Islands, “because it is necessary to provide differential treatment to the islands”. Montero emphasised that the Government’s commitment to the Canary Islands was evident, with its 75% increase in the air-ticket subsidy to Canarian residents. In his letter, Montero repeats the commitment made verbally with Torres, after requesting a written confirmation, because the text on the new tax does not mention the islands. Nueva Canarias announced that in the event of the archipelago not excluded from the new air transport tax, its support for Pedro Sanchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, would be reconsidered.
Virus suspect’s ship is banned from Antigua
Binter offers a host of new Canarian flights
SPANISH airline Binter is introducing a raft of new flights between Morocco and the Canary Islands this summer. A CRUISE liner was denied entry into Antigua because an Italian tourist on board had been diagnosed with pneumonia. She has since been tested for Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Puerto Rico, and the cruiser, named Luminose, is now heading for Tenerife’s Santa Cruz port. The 68-year-old passenger, who fell ill on board and was seen by the ship’s doctor,
was diagnosed with pneumonia. But in Puerto Rico, she was examined by doctors at the Ashford Presbyterian Hospital, because her symptoms were compatible with Coronavirus. The hospital’s medical team advised that she should be put in isolation, and that she be tested for COVID-19. She is currently in quarantine in San Juan, for suspected symptoms of COVID -19. The cruise liner is now on its way to Tenerife’s Santa Cruz Port.

The company will also launch a new air route, between the Marrakech-Menara and Funchal airports, during the “high season”, between July and September. And, from 15th July, flights will take off every Wednesday and Saturday until 12th September. Binter announced an additional connection from the Marrakech-Menara airport to Gran Canaria, and, during the high season, the flight will operate on Saturdays, in addition to Thursdays and Sundays. It will also add a new air route, between Agadir and Gran Canaria, from July to
September, and as well as Mondays and Fridays, flights will be available on Sundays, During the same period, the airline is also planning three, weekly, CasablancaGran Canaria flights, on Mondays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Beginning in April, Binter will include a non-stop flight between Agadir and Tenerife every Wednesday, until October. The company is also offering another non-stop connection, between Marrakech Airport and Tenerife North Airport, every Tuesday, from July to September. Binter passengers have the option to fly to all islands in the Canaries’ archipelago, with more than 180 interisland flights available. The airline, established in 1989, is a regional carrier, operating inter-island services within the Canary Islands, and other Atlantic islands.

‘READY-MEALS’ have never really been a feature of supermarket produce. Historically, the focus has been on raw ingredients, with a view to home cooking! Now, though, pre-packed dinners are taking off, and the latest generation of young adults admit they can just about cope with microwaving a tortilla without their mum’s supervision. Unlike their UK counterparts, today’s ready-meals are, typically, freshly-made daily and sold in Tupperware-type dishes in the refrigeration compartments. Yet the fare - lasagne, quiche, and vegetarian, fish and vegan options - is international enough to appeal to a wide audience. Home-grown chains Mercadona and El Corte Inglés, along with French hypermarket company Carrefour, were the first to cash in. But ready-meal prices vary considerably across the board, from €2-4.50 on average at Mercadona, through to prices by the kilo of over €25, which means typical portions of between €5-10 per person. Pre-packed mixed salads, wraps, packs of croquettes, pasta dishes, chicken nuggets, paella, falafel and tahini, chips, ravioli, spaghetti, lentil or bean stew, and risotto, are among the staples at Mercadona. But El Corte Inglés offers many other options, including fresh seafood, roast chicken, chicken curry, stuffed

peppers, stuffed aubergine, paella, and goat’s cheese lasagne, all with fresh vegetables, which justifies their higher prices. Carrefour offers a commendable, value-for-money assortment, with paella, fresh fish in sauce, chickpea casserole, stews, pastas, truffle and potato soup, battered squid rings, cannelloni and cuts of meat, typically at around €10-13 a kilo. Supermarket ready-meals have risen by over 10% in the past year, with Mercadona capturing about two-thirds of the market. Although many modern workplaces are switching to earlier finishing times, with shorter lunch-breaks, the need to commute some distance from home means it
is not feasible to return, cook lunch and then go back to work. Old habits die hard, and nearly all Spaniards, after clocking off, continue to eat their main meal in the middle of the day, rather than at night. The shorter lunch-breaks, as well as the faster, busier pace of modern life, especially with far fewer parents able to be stay-at-home childcarers, means cooking tends to happen at weekends, if at all, in some homes. Traditionally, families all meet together for long lunches at weekends, and the older generations usually do the cooking. But this new trend has started to see more and more supermarkets jumping on the
ready-meal bandwagon, trying to outdo each other on price or quality, or both. The latest to sign up are German chains Lidl and Aldi, and, though generally much cheaper in Spain than in most other supermarkets, their pre-packed, meal selection undercuts most of the others, substantially. According to marketing consultancy Nielsen, the average Spanish household now consumes ready-meals six times a month, and traditional takeaway eateries are losing one in three customers to supermarkets’ pre-packed dinners. But though supermarkets now make an average of 3% of their total profits from ready-meals, restaurants are far from struggling. And bars, which practically all sell food of some description, from a handful of snacks to full three-course meals, are closer to your doorstep here in Spain than anywhere else. The eating-out industry in Spain is one of the most widespread and profitable nationwide, initially as a way for the workforce to get a decent meal in the middle of the day, and later, fuelled by the tourism industry. And even the smallest village has a handful of bars, as well as a restaurant or two.
The price of plantation bananas at record low THE average price of Canarian bananas at origin, from February 24th to Mar 1st, stood at a record low of 15.85 cents per kilo, compared with the 72 cents/kilo and 36.39 cents/kilo from the same week in 2019 and 2018, respectively.
That’s according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAP), and this season, the price started at 33.57 cents/kilo, and has not stopped falling since. In the latest week alone,
it has dropped by 7.74%, compared with the previous week. Last Friday, sources from the Association of Banana Producer Organisations of the Canary Islands (Asprocan) said the low prices may be a consequence of the high temperatures, recorded during the Canary Islands’ recent wind-storms. Manuel Redondo, technical secretary of COAG Canari-
as, said Canary bananas were very sensitive to heat and temperature changes, so the high temperatures have resulted in a reduction in the product’s life cycle. He added: “After the latest wind-storms, pineapples have had to be harvested earlier, so the supply has been advanced.” Redondo also said the damages suffered by the plantations of some areas would not be
reflected in a reduction of the supply, for at least two or three months. Banana plantations most affected by the latest storms are in Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, Gran Canaria and, to a lesser extent, El Hierro. Some 8,000 plots have been hit, according to Asprocan’s first estimations. Puerto de la Cruz has recorded the most severe damage. And in this part of northern Tenerife, it is estimated that up to 80% of the plants have fallen in some areas, and those still standing are severely damaged. La Palma has also suffered, the western part being severely damaged, especially Tijarafe, Los Llanos and Las Breñas.

Felt-tip pens can’t always pick out false bank notes
THE National Police have announced that special felttip pens, used to ensure that bank notes are not fakes, can be potentially misleading. The use of the pens is a common practice, among companies in which money is exchanged. The pens, or markers, carry iodine ink, which detects starch, present in conventional papers, but not in bank notes. It means that if the bill is false, a dark mark will be left on the note. But on authentic notes, the mark appears yellowish, or practically invisible. Officers are advising that these detector pens are not as effective as users believe. Investigators have spotted that, on occasion, the specific iodine pens do not detect whether the notes are false or not. The police have also become aware that the false notes are more advanced, and that the fraudsters use a particular paper and ink, as well as applying a special substance, ensuring that the pen doesn’t do what it is supposed to do. Investigating officers are warning the public, as well as commercial establishments, to check the authenticity of the notes; not just with the pen and the UV light, but by touching the note, looking at it, and general observation. The National Police, along with the Bank of Spain, recommend that we check all notes. They say that while touching an authentic bank note, you should notice a few things. For example, the texture should be firm but rough, as well as resistant. Also, some of the printed elements on the notes, especially the numbers, are usually thicker and slightly raised. When looking at the notes, there should be a watermark, as well as a security thread. These can be checked, while holding the note up to the light. Finally, there should be a hologram on the note, and if it is turned over, from back to front, the hologram can clearly be seen.

Preservation of coastal road so vital to ecology LA LAGUNA Council has joined forces with the Canarian Government to protect and safeguard the ecological values of its coastal road in the municipality, heading north from Punta del Hidalgo along the coast.
The scheme was presented last Monday by La Laguna Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and José Antonio Valbuena, the Canarian Government’s Councillor for Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning. The measures, which include closing the road to traffic, and increased surveillance to avoid campers parking in an area where they are not allowed, is a response to the demands from Punta del Hidalgo residents. The Mayor said: “In recent weeks, we have received a series of requests from the neighbours of Punta del Hidalgo and the North-east region. “We were asked to act
before the continuous erosion of the Bajamar coast road was irreparable, and we immediately went to work in search of a possible solution.” He added: “The measures will be adopted before Holy Week, to safeguard one of the areas with the greatest landscape and environmental value in the municipality. “More than 1,000 signatures have been received from residents supporting the Council’s decision.” The Council has studied various points of the coast,
with one focusing on Punta del Hidalgo. Gutiérrez said: “This point is home to 40 species of protected birds, most of them migratory, which is why we have to take measures, unpopular for some. But we all have the right to natural spaces, and the car is not compatible with these spaces. “Surveillance of the area will be increased, and a series of studies will be carried out, which directly affect the habitat of Punta del Hidalgo and the control of invasive species.”

‘Fast and Furious’ gang’s lorry thefts, at high speed!
A TOTAL of 68 Romanians, including 10 in Spain, have been arrested for a series of Fast and Furious-style heists from moving lorries.
The gang, who targeted lorries on motorways across Europe and bagged cargo worth €10m, left the drivers oblivious of their moneyspinning antics. Each crime was carefully planned, in scenes that could have come straight from a ‘Fast and Furious’ film, with gang members working in teams of four cars. The lead vehicle would start to drive slowly in front of the lorry, while two other cars held up following traffic. A fourth car then drove up close behind the lorry, and one of the criminals climbed out of the car’s sunroof, on to the bonnet, and broke open the lock on the lorry’s back doors with an angle-grinder. The valuable cargo was then transferred to their vehicle, or thrown on the side of the road to be picked up later. And the hapless lorry driver, and other road-users, were often unaware of what was going on.
An unprecedented lawenforcement operation, involving five countries, was launched in 2016. It was coordinated by Europol and code-named ‘ARROW’. The latest phase of the operation resulted in the arrest of 37 members of the highlyprofessional syndicate in Romania. Some 73 house searches were carried out in the early hours of last Tuesday by the Romanian National Police and the French National Gendarmerie, with the support of on-the-ground Europol officers. Earlier this year, 10 suspects were arrested in Spain, 10 in France, six in the Netherlands and five in Sweden. European arrest warrants have also been issued for the remaining members at large. ‘Fast and Furious’ is an American media franchise, based on a series of action films starring Vin Diesel, which are largely concerned with illegal street-racing, heists and spies.

Seven more policemen wanted for Granadilla
GRANADILLA de Abona Council, along with Maria Candelaria Rodriguez, the department head of Security and Emergency Services, are advertising seven positions for those who want train and work as Local Police officers. The deadline for submitting applications is on 20th March, but there is a slight catch because those who are taken on will have to work inside the municipality, Granadilla Mayor José Domingo Regalado appreciates the fact that the municipality needs more police officers, because of its growing population over recent years. Regalado also believes that more policing equipment, to help the officers execute a better service on the whole, is also required. The Granadilla municipality has registered a fast-growing population of some 50,000 individuals. María Candelaria Rodríguez said the extra police officers working inside the municipality would be good support for the public’s welfare. Once the process is complete, there will be around 57 officers working in Granadilla, which should help improve the majority of services within the municipality.
Air Force trains in the Canaries, after threat by Morocco THE Spanish Air Force is training in the Canary Islands, and two wings of F-18 have deployed airplanes in the archipelago to exercise in air combat this week, following veiled threats from Morocco. The training is a reaction to the steps taken by the North African country to extend its territorial waters, to the extent

that they could overlap with the archipelago’s Spanish waters. Morocco appears to be the most direct threat, although that seems remote, as far as the Canary Islands are concerned. Six F-18 of Wing 12, based in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) have travelled to the Canaries to participate in a training exercise with Wing 46, which also has McDonnell Douglas F-18 Hornet fighters. The objective of this transfer of planes from the Peninsula is to participate in air-combat
training, next to the airplanes that protect the Canary Islands. Those taking part are based in Gando, on Gran Canaria, and are trained in an area defined for these military purposes, in the airspace south of the islands. An Air Force official said: “During the year, exercises of this type are regularly scheduled, and are attended by airplanes from our outstanding units in the Peninsula, to train together with the Ala 46 aircraft.” Last autumn, a multi-national

exercise was held, in which Spanish fighters practised interception and air-toair combat against other aircraft. The operational situation of the F-18 of Ala 46 is the subject of special attention and debate, among airdefence experts. They are a decisive element in the deterrence and defence of the sovereignty of Spain, in the Canary Islands. Therefore, the problems of seniority and obsolescence of some Gando devices set off the alarms a few years ago. The Air Force has not resigned itself to losing capacity, regarding fighter jets in the Canary Islands, and for that reason, it launched a plan of revisions and maintenance to extend the useful life of the F-18, and even “resuscitate” fighters which were already out of service. When, precisely, the Moroccan authorities began these movements, the Air Force broadcast a video of two F-18s flying over the coast of one of the Canary Islands. Morocco’s army has been reinforced significantly in recent years, and in the field of air and combat fighters, it has some advantages, with its F-16 equipped with radars, missiles and vision helmets, which exceed the capabilities of F-18 in certain areas.

The new protocol All matches called off for missing people in Spain’s top leagues THE Guardia Civil and the Association SOS Desaparecidos have, between them, presented a new protocol, to be applied in the search for missing persons. This procedure is designed, especially, for finding missing people in non-urban areas, and it is hoping to increase success in large rural areas. The protocol seeks to increase the effectiveness of the response by the Guardia Civil when mobilising available resources, especially during the first hours of the disappearance, as well as the communication of news, in the hope of achieving a quicker, active response to the search. When launching the search devices, the profile of the missing person will be taken into account. The first classification has to do with the type of disappearance, classified as voluntary, involuntary or forced. In addition, the risk analysis and the context of the disappearance will also be taken into account. The new database of Missing Persons and Human Remains (PDyRH) represents an Misleading Lawyer’s column THERE was an unfortunate error in our Lawyer’s column last week, regarding the payments of debts. It said the statutes of limitations of many debts was set to take place on 7th March 2020. In fact, the actual date is the 7th October, and we apologise to our readers, and Lawyer Mariano Siri, for the blunder.
evolution and adaptation of the previous one, created in 2010. Its main objective was only the comparison of dead bodies and human remains, without identifying missing persons. However, this new national database will integrate the management of disappearances, including functionalities, such as the data of the complaint, citizen collaboration and statistical exploitation, among others. According to the data in the PDyRH of the National Centre for the Disappeared of the Ministry of Interior, as of 31st December 2019, there were 5,529 alerts registered. Some 2,839 correspond to people who were minors at the time of their disappearance. Among them, the group of foreign minors and centre escapees stands out, with 1,059 cases. In relation to the duration of the disappearances, according to 2019 data, 64% are found within a week of filing the alert, 74% within two weeks, 82% in one month and 8% continue more than six months. Only 1.54% of the disappearances have a fatal outcome, either through natural causes, accident, autolysis or violence. The disappearance of people is extremely complex, although there is an upward trend in the number of cases, over the last few years. The general pattern is that the vast majority are voluntary, with a higher incidence in cases from child-protection centres, followed by voluntary disappearance of adults. The third place is occupied by the voluntary disappearances of minors fleeing their homes.
ALL La Liga matches have been suspended because of the Coronavirus outbreak, in addition to those of Spain’s other levels of professional and nonprofessional football. At emergency meetings held between the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation), La Liga officials and AFA (Association of Spanish Footballers) on Wednesday afternoon and yesterday morning (Thursday), it was decided that this measure would be taken, with the total number of Covid-19 cases in the European nation now exceeding 2,000. At the beginning of a week, which has seen swift action taken as a precaution to prevent further difficulties, the Champions League last-16, second-leg clash between FC Barcelona and Napoli, has already been ordered behind closed doors, in the same manner that Valencia v Atalanta took place in similar circumstances on Tuesday evening.
Schools in Madrid, where half of Spain’s total cases have been recorded, closed until the 25th March, while Getafe, from the capital, had previously refused to travel to Milan to face Inter in the Europa League. It was announced that all flights between Italy and Spain have suspended until the mentioned date, in any event. And AS Roma were unable to travel to Sevilla for their meeting in the same competition yesterday (Thursday), after failing to gain authorisation from Spanish authorities. Around the time that news had broken of the latter development, RFEF revealed that all non-professional football in Spain had been suspended for two weeks, on its way to a meeting with La Liga and AFE. First and second division matches were still scheduled to have Week 28 and 29 fixtures played behind closed doors up to that point, and it was widely speculated that Spain’s top two flights would follow the route of their Italian counterpart Serie A, which has been suspended
until 3rd April. COPE later reporting that Primera and Segunda division health departments had sent a statement to La Liga recommending that “the championships should not be played”. The advice was accepted, and the move made official at midday yesterday (Thursday), with all football in Spain called off temporarily. In the meantime, UEFA also announced that Sevilla v Roma and Inter v Getafe would be postponed “as a result of the travelling restrictions between Spain and Italy, imposed yesterday by the Spanish authorities”. Play is scheduled to restart on the weekend of 3rd-5th April, considering the international break at the turn of the month, which could also be pushed back. However, the action taken in Spain is destined to have a severe, economic impact on Spanish football and its clubs, who will be forced into a full month away from the pitch. Furthermore, it has also been suggested that they could lose up to 25% of their television money.
Giant lizards dominate top slots on our TITSA buses
NATIONAL bus company TITSA is running an advertising campaign on its buses to raise public awareness of Tenerife’s giant lizard (Gallotia intermedia). The species, believed to be extinct, was rediscovered in 1996, and the picture on the back of buses is intended to publicise the species among the general public. The bus company, owned by the Cabildo, has also added posters, teaching modules and activity booklets to spread the word. And, as it is an exclusive Tenerife species, the Cabildo is thought to be responsible for conserving
the lizard. This giant lizard is an endemic species of the island, said to have lived in Tenerife before the arrival of humans. It measures almost half-a-metre in length and is again in danger of extinction. Latterly, this species was widely distributed throughout
the island. But today it survives in the north, in the Teno Massif, one of Tenerife’s three oldest geological sectors, and on the Guaza Mountain. These two protected, natural areas, separated by more than 30 kilometres, constitute
their last refuge. And in these rugged, natural fortresses, the giant lizards try to escape human pressure, while cats remain their greatest threat. The bus transport lines in
which the image of the lizard appears are 108, Santa CruzLa Orotava-Los RealejosIcod de Los Vinos; and 111, Santa Cruz- South Airport-Los Cristianos-Costa Adeje.

Rock-climber breaks bones
THE Canarian Emergency Services rescued a rockclimber after he fell into a precarious Granadilla area of Las Vegas, Chimiche, last Saturday, leaving him with several broken bones. The emergency services were notified at 9.45am, and the caller told the operator that a 53-year-old man, who was practising rock-climbing, had fallen from a considerable height and needed medical assistance. An ambulance was sent to the Las Vegas area of Granadilla, along with the Canarian emergency rescue helicopter. Once they were in the area, they located the victim, and, after a quick assessment, he was hoisted on to a stretcher, with the help of local firefighters, and lifted into the helicopter. He was then transported to Tenerife North airport, where another ambulance was awaiting him. The man was checked over by the medical team and made comfortable, before being taken to Candelaria Hospital to have his injuries treated.

Hand-sanitiser shortage sparks home-made jobs
Sea trio rescued but a man is still missing
SPAIN now has a hand-sanitiser shortage, with stores and pharmacy shelves stripped bare of the product, as Coronavirus sweeps through Spain.
TWO men and a fiveyear-old girl were rescued from rough waters, just off the Guayeda coast, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas.
Home-made production is now the latest craze, because standard items from shops have become liquid gold. And, according to Dr Rupert Hayman, from Spain’s Fuengirola production, it is quite simple, although he insists you must use at least a 60% alcohol base, as the minimum for the homemade potions to work. Dr Hayman is advising people in Spain who can’t obtain hand gels to adopt the following method: “To produce your own hand sanitiser, take twothirds of a cup of rubbing alcohol, which can be found in many of the local Chinese shops for around a euro, and mix in a large bowl, with one-third of a cup of aloe vera gel, and
The emergency services were called last Sunday afternoon, and teams were dispatched immediately to the scene at around 4.45pm. Upon arrival, they found the three people struggling in the current. But they rescued all three, only to find that another person with them was still missing. The trio pulled from the water were suffering mild hypothermia, and the youngster was transferred to the Maternity and Infant hospital in Las Palmas, while the adults were taken to the Dr Negrin hospital. The Canarian emergency services, the Guardia Civil, the Civil Protection and the Local Police in Agaete all worked together, searching land and sea for the other missing person, but to no avail.
5-10 drops of the essential oil of your choice. “The aloe vera will protect your skin, and the essential oil will offer a pleasant smell. A two-ounce spray bottle, again found cheaply in the shops, or a liquid soapcontainer, can be used to store the home-made potion, to take to work and other public places, as well as on public transport.” The doctor adds: “Mixed properly and sealed tightly in its spray bottle, a homemade hand-sanitiser can last for up to four weeks, and will be as effective as the standard product,
normally purchased in the high street.” Worried residents in Spain have been seeking alternatives, as their frustrations have risen over the product’s lack of availability. And Amazon themselves have banned over 10,000 opportunists, retailing on their website for “price hiking”. But, according to doctors, a regular soap-and-water wash is still the best method to prevent contamination. Yet they advise people to use the home-made gel remedy when soap and water is unavailable.

Coronavirus panic and collapse in oil prices prompt market chaos
By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
Staying on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks… Coronavirus headlines have dominated market sentiment in recent weeks, resulting in some significant volatility in currency markets. Over this period we have seen GBP/ EUR slump from 1.19 to 1.15 and EUR/GBP accelerate to 0.87. Meanwhile, GBP/USD has climbed from 1.29 and 1.30, whilst EUR/USD has surged from 1.08 to 1.13. The pound has been putting on a mixed performance in recent weeks, as the UK government’s threat to walk away from trade talks with the EU by June reignited Brexit uncertainty. The US dollar, meanwhile, has
faced significant headwinds, as concerns over the coronavirus saw the Federal Reserve implement an emergency rate cut at the start of March, and drove speculation the Fed could cut rates close to zero in its next policy meeting. Meanwhile, this slump in the US dollar has helped to buoy demand for the euro, which has been on an uptrend in spite of growing worries that coronavirus disruption will see
parts of the Eurozone slip into a recession. The coronavirus will undoubtedly continue to dominate market sentiment in the weeks to come, as will the response by central banks and governments. In the UK, this could prompt the Bank of England (BoE) to cut interest rates at its next policy meeting on the 26 March. With the European Central Bank (ECB) running out of
monetary firepower, the focus for EUR investors will instead be on Eurozone governments and their plans for fiscal stimulus. Meanwhile, USD investors will keep a close eye on the outbreak of the coronavirus in the US, amid concerns the spread of the disease is far greater than current figures suggest. At Currencies Direct we’re here to talk currency whenever you need us, so

Joanna Lumley’s Hidden Caribbean: Havana to Haiti In the second episode, Joanna visits Guantanamo before heading to Haiti, the land of Voodoo. Before leaving Cuba, Joanna travels to the south of the island, home to the infamous Guantanamo Bay detention camp, part of a US naval base. The prison has a ten-mile exclusion zone around it, so Joanna cannot get close, but she goes to the picturesque town of Guantanamo where she visits the home of twin sisters, one of whom is a teacher, the other is studying medicine. As she walks through the town, Joanna says: “I don’t know what I was expecting, but it’s absolutely gorgeous with a beautiful Spanish influence.” The sisters show Joanna their modest flat and explain that they make ends meet by one of them singing, Joanna adds: “Both of them are studying and just making ends meet, yet so full of optimism and longing for opportunities. I wish it were easier in this beautiful country.” Just before she leaves Cuba, Joanna ducks into a local bar to sample a daquiri for ‘research purposes’. Joanna takes a quick plane ride to Haiti and heads to Labadee, a tiny part of the country which is completely different to the rest of it and where passing cruise ships dock. Joanna says: “It’s luxury on a scale you cannot imagine. It does look rather enticing…but I hate these gated communities. I hate the idea of them and us. The tourists are having a lovely time, but they don’t see the real Haiti.” Next Joanna heads to the city of Cap-haitien where the beaches are covered in metres of washed up plastic before exploring the history of the country and visiting an amazing ancient fortress high in the mountains. Back in Cap-haitien Joanna shares a bottle of wine with a restaurant owner who is confident the country is going to turn itself around and then visits a bakery which makes cassava bread which is said to contain anti-cancer and anti-Alzheimer’s agents.

Reigning Grand Slam champions Wales host Scotland in the final round of the 2020 Six Nations aiming to extend their unbeaten home run in this fixture to 18 years. Wales triumphed 18-11 at Murrayfield in 2019 on their way to a 27th title and will start as strong favourites. Scotland have won just once in Cardiff in the Six Nations era, while Wales have been victorious in 11 of the last 12 meetings in this tournament. Gabby Logan presents live coverage from the Principality Stadium, with expert analysis from Wales centre Jonathan Davies and former Scotland captain Andy Nicol. Commentary comes from Eddie Butler, former Wales winger Jonathan Davies and Scotland’s record points scorer Chris Paterson.

The Dominic Cummings Story For critics and supporters alike, Boris Johnson’s chief adviser - the man who is said to have ‘masterminded’ Brexit - is an enigma. Dominic Cummings is perhaps the most powerful unelected political figure in Britain today, but what does he actually believe? What’s shaped his approach to politics and the media? And what can his rise to power tell us about how politics has changed? In this one-hour programme for BBC Two, Emily Maitlis examines Dominic Cummings’ place in our changing political landscape, stretching back over two decades. With testimonies from some of his fiercest critics and closest political friends, Emily Maitlis sheds light on a man whose ambitions may now direct Britain’s journey for years to come. The film charts his arrival in Downing Street as a senior adviser with significant and perhaps unprecedented power. Now, at the apex of the largest Conservative majority since 1987, Cummings aims to play a key role in reshaping the nation, our economy and government.

Dodgy door halts flight
A FLIGHT, on route to Vienna from Tenerife South on Wednesday, had to return to the airport after 26 minutes. The airport’s air-traffic control posted on its Twitter account about the incident, yet Ludamotion’s Flight OE2601/LDM84G took off with no initial problems. But the pilot was forced to do an about-turn after receiving a warning that, possibly, one of the cabin doors wasn’t closed securely. Fortunately, the flight landed without incident.

THE nine Catalan political leaders and activists, sentenced from 9-13 years in prison for their roles in the October 2017 independence referendum in Catalonia, have been granted regular, temporary release. It follows the decision of the Lledoners’ prison board to grant Jordi Turull and Josep Rull temporary leave, from Monday to Friday, for 12 hours daily. The other seven, Oriol Junqueras, Raül Romeva, Jordi Sànchez, Jordi Cuixart, Joaquim Forn, Carme Forcadell and Dolors Bassa, had already been granted temporary leave. They are all being allowed to work, or volunteer for threeto-five days a week, up to 11 hours a day, while some have
Another Eurozone interest-rate bonus THE Eurozone interest rate has now marked its fourth anniversary in negative figures, which mean mortgage rates in Spain, and other common-currency nations, will continue to be low.
In fact, the closing figure for February was the secondlowest in 14 months. Spanish variable-rate mortgages are set according to the euro interest figure, or Euríbor. And, unlike in the UK, they are revalued annually, not constantly. It means that if the interest rate shows signs of possibly rising, home-owners have up to 12 months to plan and work out whether a fixedrate loan would save them money. It also means no fluctuation in monthly repayments, so a sudden, one-off spike in the Euríbor will not mean an unexpectedly-expensive month. For this reason, and especially as a fee applies to set up fixed-rate loans, the vast majority of mortgages in Spain are variable rate. Luckily, in the past, the Euríbor has not changed dramatically, or suddenly from year to year, and any rises have been very gradual, meaning rearranging an existing mortgage has not had to be an emergency.
The Euríbor first dropped below zero in February 2016; something never seen before. It led to some home-owners questioning whether they would actually get a rebate on their repayments, or pay less than the capital due. But the answer was, of course, No! Banks tend to set their mortgage interest rates at the Euríbor, plus a given percentage, which means their cost has nearly halved since 2007 and 2008, when they were at their peak. At the beginning of 2019, it was feared that the honeymoon might be over when the Euríbor started creeping above zero again. But at its highest since then, it reached -0.082% only, in March, after which it started to drop, falling again into negative in June. And compared with late 2007 and early 2008 rates of around 5.3%, or even the 2% to 3% after 2002, when Spain first adopted the euro, a few home-owners were panicking. The Euríbor in the last 14 months, from January 2019 to February 2020 inclusive, was at its lowest in August, when it dropped to -0.187%, and a steady climb started to reverse again in December, when 2019 closed with a rate of -0.135%. At the end of February, the Eurozone interest rate was -0.179%, and no plans are afoot for it to rise greatly any time soon.
All nine imprisoned Catalan leaders put on temporary leave also been granted leave to take care of elderly relatives. But they must all return to jail each night to sleep. All nine leaders are serving up to 13 years for sedition, having been sentenced by Spain’s Supreme Court on 14th October last year. The leave granted to them follows Article 100.2 of Spanish prison regulations, applicable to prisoners who fall in the medium-category sentencing, and who have served 25% of their sentences. During the Catalan Trial, however, prosecutors requested for the sentences to include a clause, meaning that not one of the officials could enjoy temporary leave until they had served half of the conviction. But this was rejected by the Spanish Supreme Court, and the penitentiary judges have also ruled it out.
From top left to right: Raul Romeva, Joaquim Forn, Jordi Turull, Oriol Junqueras, Josep Rull. Bottom left to right: Jordi Cuixart, Carme Forcadell, Dolors Bassa and Jordi Sanchez Oriol Junqueras, the jailed former Catalan vice-president, left prison for the first time on Tuesday, under the terms of the temporary leave granted to him, so that he can work for six hours a day, three days a week, at a university. He will work at a university campus in Manresa, for the Bages University Foundation (FUB), which is a private organisation, providing courses for students in Catalonia. Junqueras, who will have his own office, is set to begin preparing the history course he will start to teach after Easter. This course is, reportedly, available to anyone who is interested in taking it, and the university authorities aim to make the presence
of Junqueras on campus “as normal as possible”. Raül Romeva, the former Catalan Foreign Affairs Minister, also left prison for the first time on Monday. For three days a week, he will work for a private organisation, evaluating the progress made in the 25 years since the Dayton Peace Accords ended the Bosnian War. On Thursday, a Catalan court also authorised regular temporary release for Jordi Cuixart, despite the Spanish prosecutor’s opposition. The Spanish prosecutor had opposed Cuixart’s temporary leave, arguing that the offence was “exceptional, and required a restrictive interpretation” when awarding daytime release from prison.
burn I received on 19-2-20 when returning from Tenerife. “It was caused by the boiling hot water in a pot noodle that a cabin crew member lost her grip of. A spokesman for easyJet said: “Our cabin crew immediately administered first-aid, and did everything they could to help Ms Rogers onboard. “The safety of our passengers is always our highest priority, and we take reports of any injuries seriously. Spanish holiday prices down, but insurance is shooting up THE cost of a Spanish holiday has fallen rapidly since the outbreak of Coronavirus… and internet searches for Spanish resorts have crashed.
Travel agents, fearing a Spanish-holiday wipe-out, as well as in other European countries, have reacted to market fears and conditions, and slashing prices with reductions of up to 20% from 2019 pricing structures. Google statistics show a massive slump in searches for
the likes of “Holidays in Spain” by hundreds of thousands as fear sweeps Europe, but, strangely enough, searches for US holiday packages have risen with a 26% increase, despite the States having growing figures of infected people. Spain’s Costa Brava has taken the biggest slump of all, closely followed by the Canary Islands: Venice 83%, Costa Brava 83%, Sardinia 76%, Tenerife 75%, Fuerteventura 71%. As expected, though, Italy leads the table. The situation is becoming seriously concerning for the
tourist industry, which has turned to the markets by offering bargain deals to entice travellers to part with their money and take the plunge. An industry taking full advantage during the virus outbreak is travel insurance, which has seen a whopping 86% hike in sales in the last 10 days alone, but, in fairness, they take a larger risk. Spain’s tourism itself, though, is very concerned, with flagging numbers expected to arrive this summer, unless the virus fears clear, and latebooked packages come into play.
Fierce quake scatters church concert-goers AN earthquake on the island of Madeira caused panicked evacuations of homes and community buildings. Last Saturday’s 5.2 magnitude quake, just before 9pm, was even felt in several areas of the Canary Islands, including Arona, which is 325 miles away. Footage taken inside a church in Sao Vicente town, on the island’s north coast, showed people running for
INVESTIGATORS have traced threatening phone calls to jailed criminals in South America, who demand a quick ransom from victims by convincing them their loved ones are in danger. Earlier this year, a 69-yearold Madrid woman received a call from a man with a foreign-sounding accent, who told her that her daughter had been kidnapped. “Either you pay €10,000 or we’ll send you a video of us cutting off one of your daughter’s fingers,” she was told. The caller, using violent language, demanded immediate payment of a large sum of money. But just as the woman was heading for the bank, with the alleged kidnapper still on the line, she was stopped by police officers, who had been alerted by her husband. They soon confirmed that the couple’s daughter was, in fact, at her workplace, unaware of what was going on. The tricksters begin by

demanding €10,000, but they do bring the sum down, significantly, sometimes to €500. This is the latest-known case of an extortion scheme, in which criminals call a person, often selected randomly, and try to convince him or her that they have kidnapped a relative. In the last five years, Spain has seen nearly 1,500 reported cases of this type of fraud, according to the Interior Ministry figures. Half of them took place in 2016, with as many as four a
day during July. The number of reported cases has dropped significantly since then, with 104 recorded in 2018. There was a slight pickup last year, with 136 reported cases, according to a government reply to a question by a lawmaker from the Basque party EH Bildu. In this period, police officers have arrested or investigated 17 individuals. But Chief Inspector Juan Alcolea, of the National Police’s kidnappings and extortion department, notes
that this type of crime often goes unreported. “Many people who don’t pay, also don’t file a police report,” he said. Alcolea points to another difficulty when it comes to making arrests. “In the vast majority of cases, the perpetrators are not in Spain but in South America, more specifically in Chile,” he stressed. “These are often jailed inmates, who have access to cellphones, and dial telephone numbers randomly. There have been cases of calls placed to the headquarters of the Conservative Popular Party, and to Social Security offices.” The Chief Inspector added: “They make lots of failed calls, but as long as one works out, it’s worth it to them. The distance is no problem when it comes to receiving the payment.” But the police chief says a joint investigation team is being created with the Chilean police, in a bid to curb the scam.
cover during a Baroque music concert. There were no reports of casualties, but three roads were closed, partially because of rock-falls. The earthquake’s magnitude was Madeira’s most powerful for 45 years. Its epicentre was south-west of the uninhabited Desertas Islands, around 30 miles from the Funchal capital. “We were on the third floor of the Pestana Casino Gardens,” a Blackpool couple on holiday told Earthquake Report.com. “We knew what it was, having been in the Christchurch one in Feb 2011, which was much worse. There were no after-shocks and no pre-shocks… only a single rumble, then it was gone.” Mike Huddart, a former NHS senior manager, wrote on Twitter: “Earthquake in Madeira. We got out of the hotel very quickly,” while another British holidaymaker said: “Windows in the restaurant shook violently. Effing scary.” One tourist added: “On holiday in the hotel. Very, very scary. Thought the building was going to collapse.” A 2.4 magnitude, follow-up quake, 20 minutes later, led to a spokesperson at the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere saying it could not rule out replicas. The quakes were linked to a re-alignment of tectonic plates. The Canary Island Volcanology Institute said: “The earthquake has been felt very clearly in the whole of Madeira, and with less intensity in the Canary Islands.” One woman, living in Funchal, said: “I felt the ground shake, and my legs were trembling afterwards. I didn’t panic, but my relatives were indoors, and they did.”

THE UK Government has allocated a £3m fund to help support British nationals living in the EU, enabling them to protect their residency rights. Charities and organisations supporting UK nationals there have also been awarded a share of the funding, to provide practical support for them with their residency applications. This includes potentially at-risk groups, such as pensioners and disabled people, as well as benefiting residents in Spain, France, Germany, Cyprus, Italy, and several other EU countries. The organisations will each receive government funding to help those who could find it harder to complete all the paperwork required for residency applications. This fund will also help those living in remote areas, or who have mobility difficulties, and those who require help with language translation or interpretation. One beneficiary of the fund is Age in Spain, a charity which helps older British expatriates. It will be working across Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, while Asociación Babelia will be providing support in Alicante. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said “These

organisations are doing vital work to support UK Nationals in the EU, and this funding will help secure their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, so that they are given the security and stability they need.” Hugh Elliot, British Ambassador to Spain, added: “This fund will be a valuable complement to the extensive work our consulates have been doing over the past three years to prepare UK nationals for our departure from the EU. “The chosen organisations will be able to provide oneto-one, specialist support to those citizens that need it most, helping them to register as a resident and secure their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement.” Now that the UK has left the EU, some UK nationals living in certain EU member states will need to take actions to secure their residency rights,
so that they can continue to live and work in their host country. Over one million UK nationals live in EU and EFTA countries, and more than 350,000 of them are here in Spain. Charities and organisations based in Spain, who are receiving funding from the UK Nationals Support Fund, include Age in Spain, Asociación Babelia and the International Organisation for Migration. This extra assistance will build on the information and support already being provided by British Embassies. Under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement, UK nationals living in the EU at the end of the transition period can continue to live and work in their host country. Anyone residing legally in Spain by 31st December 2020 will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. As part of the on-
going information campaign, the British Government is encouraging all UK nationals in the EU to visit the Living in Guide on gov.uk for the country they live in, and sign up for tailored alerts to receive the latest information about what actions they might need to take. Man hidden for two days in 10m crevice
FIRE-FIGHTERS were called out to an emergency on Wednesday afternoon, after a man was spotted down a narrow, 10-metre crevice, by a couple of tourists. The 35-year-old Irishman had fallen, in a precarious area around the Abadas beach, in the Arico municipality… and said he’d been there for two days, out of sight! Fortunately, the tourists heard him shouting for help, and contacted the emergency services. The fire-fighters were dispatched after receiving notification from the Canarian emergency services. When they arrived at the scene, they estimated that the man must have tumbled down the 10-metre-deep hole. The ambulance services, the Local Police and the Guardia Civil were also at the scene. The fire-fighters got to work and rescued the man, who had been stuck in the small space for two days, unable to move because of his severely-damaged legs. Once rescued, he was checked over by the medical team, and was said to be a serious condition.

KittyCatz News
Thinking of adopting? KITTEN season is just around the corner, the time of year when calls for help to KittyCatz increase dramatically.
As a responsible organisation, we charge an adoption fee of €95 per female and €75 per male. This covers initial injections, flea-and-worm treatment, microchip, a green health record book and neutering. If want to adopt then there are many factors to consider, well before you take your new kitten home. Firstly, make sure you check for potential hazards, and that all the windows and doors to the outside can be closed, and any nooks and crannies are blocked off. Kittens are extremely inquisitive, and can find themselves lost or stuck in the most unlikely places. When you’re a tiny kitten, our home can seem an enormous place. To help them get familiar with where they feed, drink, sleep and go to the loo, it’s a really good idea to start them off in just one
room, for at least the first few days. This will be particularly useful with regards to house-training, because once the habit of using the litter tray is strong, they will seek it out. Kittens are extremely playful, so don’t introduce them to bad habits such as playing with your fingers, and then wonder why they enjoy biting your fingers and toes so much! There are plenty of great toys to choose from, but, better still, try making some simple toys yourself. If you are going to buy toys, choose good quality ones that your new pet cannot choke on. All our cats and kittens go on a week’s trial, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. Thinking about adoption? Please contact us via our Facebook page or www.kittycatz. net.
K9 Animal News
Some great news! WHO doesn’t love a happy ending? We certainly do, and recently at K9 we got one! Kaiser had been left tied up outside K9 over a year ago, and very quickly became loved by us all and all our volunteers. We were wondering why he still hadn’t found a new forever home. Only a few days ago, we were contacted by a young man who had been looking for his dog for over a year. He had seen photos of Kaiser on our Facebook page, and got in touch. Kaiser looked very similar to his dog that had been missing. To cut a long story short, he found the paperwork for his dog, and, guess what…Kaiser was his! Kaiser had escaped from the owner’s mother’s garden and was presumed
dead, after a while, but this man never gave up hope. When Kaiser was first left at K9, we scanned him for a chip which he had, but we couldn’t get hold of the owner because he had forgotten to update his phone number. It could have been a whole other story if we had been able to contact him, and Kaiser would not have spent a year a K9. This shows just how important it is to get your dog microchipped, and, even more so, to update your details, if they change. (Phone number, address etc.) It can save so much heartache for you and your dog. Kaiser was reunited with his owner a few days ago, and is free from kennel life. We are so pleased to say that he got his happy ever after. Have a great life, little man. You are loved by us all!

Set in a 70,000m² Finca, at 1,000 metres above sea level, you can escape from it all and discover a unique dining experience. Either pop up for an amazing meal, with the freshest, local, seasonal dishes, or spend a bit longer and take a tour of the Finca, picking some fruit, feeding the chickens and trying the local wines and cheeses in the Bodega...you choose. You can even fly in by helicopter, if you wish! The Canarian Experience is the way to discover the true flavours of Tenerife. There is a six-course set menu, including some typical Canarian dishes such as ropa vieja, which is a traditional Canarian stew with chickpeas, meat and onions, packed full of flavour. Also included is the amazing chicken, grilled over an open fire, with the traditional Canarian sauces Mojo Verde and Rojo, which are a must to try. Included in the Canarian experience is a guided tour of the Finca, to find out what they grow, and to see farmto-plate food at first hand. the Bodega at the Finca. You get to sample different varieties, along with some of the traditional cheeses of Tenerife. Finish the afternoon off at the stunning Mirador with the open fire pits, and views over the south of Tenerife out to the ocean. When we, as a whole family, visited Finca Tres Roques on a relaxed Sunday afternoon, we opted for one of the amazing set menus on offer.
The six-course menu was a very reasonable €29 per person, which included fresh bread straight from the open fire, and ½ of wine from the Bodega. The little ones both chose from the kids’ menu, which was three courses, with a drink included, for only €9. They went off to explore the climbing frame, swings and the surrounding area, and it was nice to see kids being kids, rather than sitting complaining that they were bored, or with a tablet in their hands. They spent the whole time laughing and playing. We all started with the vegetable soup with fresh sage, and the warm baked bread. It was delicious and full of flavour and, surprisingly, a big hit with the kids. To follow was the cold starter of the watercress salad with smoked cheese. The star of the dish was a palm honey vinaigrette which was incredible, and it went well with the peppery taste of the
watercress and the smokiness of the cheese. For the warm starters, you have a choice of Ropa Vieja (old clothes, if you literally translate it), or Huevos Rotos, which are chips with spicy red Spanish sausage and eggs on top. We had one of each to share. They were really nice hearty dishes, and it was nice to try something typical from Tenerife. Whilst eating the starters, I saw one of the team pop off with a wheelbarrow into the Finca, and come back with what looked like onions. He prepared the bonfire and started roasting them, and this would be our next dish - roasted calçots and Romescu sauce. Calçots are from the onion family but are a lot sweeter, and look a bit like big spring onions; they are a typical dish from the Catalan region of mainland Spain. Kito, who was looking after us for the entire meal, arrived at our table with two roof tiles overflowing with calçots, and he gave us a great demonstration on how to eat them, peeling the outer layers and enjoying the
sweet inside, dipped in the amazing Romescu sauce. It was nice to try something different, served in such a traditional way. We had a lot of fun peeling and eating these. In mainland Spain, they even have a fiesta (Calçotada) to celebrate the harvest of the calçots, and this is exactly the way they are served. For the main there is a choice of ham hock to share, a barbeque to share (including grilled chicken, pork chop, black pudding and chistorra) or cod in onions. We went for the ham hock. It was roasted in the logfire oven, and when it was served it came to the table still crackling. The outside was crispy and delicious, and it was smoky and moist on the inside. It came in a bowl full of delicious sauce, and an apple puree on the side. It was so big we could barely finish it all; you definitely won’t leave here hungry. We are going to have to come back though, because as we were finishing our meal, the sharing prime steak went past to another table, and it looked incredible. The kids both had fantastic meals as well; fresh ovenroasted chicken with chips, and home-made sausages and chips. No nuggets here, just good fresh food. With clean plates, it was obvious they had enjoyed it. The dessert was a lovely sharing platter with an amazing tiramisu and a strawberry cheesecake, which was a perfect way to finish the meal. We spent the whole afternoon up at the Finca, and there was no rush to eat. We sat and enjoyed the amazing views and, after we finished dinner, we popped up to the orchard. We were able to feed the chickens and pick some lemons from the trees, which was a highlight for the girls. If you want to escape and get away from it all between Mother Nature and the sky, the Finca Tres Roques is the place to visit. Unplug, unwind, and enjoy some amazing food and fantastic service. Just reconnect with the family, and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

IN last week’s edition, it was reported that poor Sid Owen, the Eastenders’ actor, had been struck in the mouth by a golf ball, which ricocheted off a tree in Thailand. Apparently, his treatment has already run into thousands, and Sid feels he might have to come home before returning to Thailand to have the surgery completed, because there is no timescale yet for his recovery. But he’s worried that his insurance won’t cover the cost of his overlong stay and treatment in Thailand. The Albert Square legend lost six teeth as a result of the accident… and also lost almost two stone in weight, because he has struggled to eat. Sid is funding the treatment himself, and may need dentures forever. The prospect is not sitting well with him, and doctors have also warned him that the threat of coronavirus is also real. “It just feels like one thing after another at the moment,” said dejected Sid. Perhaps a return to the Soap might be just what he needs! Talking of golf balls ricocheting all over the place, I put the TV on the other day to watch a bit of the Oman Open, only to see Callum Shinkwin enjoy some amazing, pinball good fortune at the 18th, during his second round.

Not quite the diet Sid had expected!
The 26-year-old Englishman flirted with the rocks with his tee shot on the par-four closing hole at Al Mouj Golf, as his ball came to rest in the rough, on the right-hand side of the fairway. From a difficult lie, he then gouged his second shot straight into the rocks, and his ball appeared to be heading into the water in the Gulf of Oman as it ricocheted back. However, it hit another rock and bounced high into the air, before coming down on yet another rock, from where it deflected back on to dry land, on the edge of the fairway, leaving Shinkwin smiling broadly. And so he should, but he failed to make the most of his luck because he left his third shot short of the green from another tricky lie, and took three to get down from there. That gave Shinkwin a double-bogey six, dropping him down to five-under overall, and in a tie for 10th place, following a two-under 70, after leaving the 17th green just two behind joint-leaders Stephen Gallacher and Rasmus Hojgaard. Callum finished with a six-under par for the tournament, in joint 25th position. Well Callum, that’s Golf for you! Been there, got the T-shirt, but great to watch. Should you be disqualified for signing
the score? Eddie Pepperell is the latest player to be disqualified from a professional event after signing for the wrong score, so is it time to scrap this rule? It’s one of the rules that tears players apart. Yes, it’s a simple task to write 18 numbers in 18 boxes and then add them up and put the total in the 19th box. But this is a sport with Rules. I tend to turn the argument to other sports, so imagine if this happened in football. Manchester United have just beaten Liverpool 3-0, and the managers have signed a piece of paper that says it was 2-0. So the result is wiped from the history books. It’s ridiculous, of course, which is why it doesn’t happen this way. Golf Rules really go out of their way to make this simple. All you have to do is ensure your hole scores are right. You don’t even have to add them up because that’s the responsibility of the committee. You just need to make sure your marker hasn’t dropped the ball, and do correct any errors with them before you sign and hand your scorecard in. We’ve all been signing for our scores since we first rocked up in a club competition, and we’ve probably all made a foolish mistake that’s cost us. We learn from it and try not to do it again. But taking care of our scores, and presenting them in the correct fashion, is a fundamental principle, which goes back to the dawn of the game. So let’s not get carried away because popular tour star Eddie Pepprill wrote a 3 instead of a 4. But check your score. It is entirely right that the DQ penalty is applied where a score becomes known as incorrect after it has been signed for and finalised, to cover things
like cheating, or even not knowing the rules, although it is one of the more arcane rules of the game. Finally, before I write this week’s results, I have a jammy dodger shot for you. Well, jammy dodger is what my Yorkshire playing partner, Davie Croft, appeared to call me when I chipped in from 50 feet. I’d found myself on the picon over the cart path at the 13th par 3. But, with my trusty, battered sand-iron, I floated the ball over the hazard. It bounced once on the apron of the green to run straight to hole and in… yes, a recorded 2 on the card. GET IN! Club House squeeze past busy Pink Elephant team THE handicap semifinals took place last week, but Pink Elephant warmed up for their semi, with a catch-up match, away to Palms Sports Bar, on Wednesday. There must have been some close games, because Lynn posted on Facebook: “Most of the games could have gone either way.” But it was very much Pink Elephant’s night, as they ran out 8-0 winners, with Andy chipping in a 180, along the way. Next stop for the Pink Elephants was their semi at The Club House, conceding a 40-point start, and here is Lynn’s view of events: “Wow! That’s the way to have a semifinal. What a great night. “It could have been anyone’s game and went down to the double on the last game. It was a good fight all the way. Well done the club house and good luck in the final xx.”
The other semi, between Sandys Bookie Boys and Emerald Lounge, was equally as close. I can’t tell you much about it, but Emerald Lounge, receiving a 240-point start, won 4-3. In the Plate, Pas O Nadas Int were home to Ourplace Playboys, who received a 40-point advantage, but, again, I have no info. I know nothing about it, other than Playboys winning 5-2. The other semi was Club Activo v Scooters&Chevys B. The away team had an 80-point head start, and were giving as good as they got, losing the first, winning the second, losing the third and winning the fourth… but then the wheels came off, and they dropped the last three, to lose 5-2. So it’s the last week of the league tonight (Friday), which happens to be the 13th. Make of it what you will!

CD Tenerife AFTER the disappointment of their trip to Oviedo, Rubén Baraja had to raise his players’ spirits, as Ponferradina came to the Heliodoro last Sunday, looking for three points themselves, to climb up the league table. He started with a nowfamiliar 4-4-2 formation, with Ortolá still in goal for Dani Hernández, and Dani Gomez up front with Joselu. They did, however, seem to be missing a talisman like Milla, who has blue and white blood in his veins, and lost fluency with Aitor and Undabarrena in midfield. Ponferradina started conservatively with a 4-5-1 formation, and Tenerife struggled to find a way through, and, in fact, neither team had a shot on target, during the first 45 minutes. The highlight of the half was a chance for Joselu in the 29th minute, who was played through by Lasure, but his shot went

over the bar of René’s goal. Ten minutes later, Nahuel had a great chance to take the lead for the home team, when the ball fell to him

on the penalty spot, but he, too, fired high over the Ponferradina goal. Thus, a tedious and uninteresting first half came to an end, with the score still 0-0. The second half started with a yellow card for Aitor Sanz, which means he will be suspended for this weekend’s trip to Fuenlabrada. After an hour, Baraja made his first change, taking off Nahuel for Bermejo, to mix it up a bit, and, seven minutes later, Joselu and Dani Gómez had the possibility of scoring the first goal of the night. Joselu flicked on a corner from the front post, which René stopped but couldn’t hold on to, and it fell to Dani Gómez who miskicked it, and Ponferradina were able to clear. That same play continued, and Tenerife appealed for handball against Son, but neither the referee nor VAR agreed, and play continued. Five minutes later, Baraja made another change when Javi Muñoz replaced Undabarrena, and, in the 74th, Suso came on for Joselu, completing his three changes. Every coach likes to see the game change when he makes substitutions,
and Baraja was made to look good, when the game changed in the 76th minute. Tenerife were attacking with more clarity, and, in one of these plays, a Lasure through-ball found central defender Sipcic in front of goal, who beautifully flicked it on the turn, past René, into the back of the Ponferradina net. Before anyone could celebrate, VAR intervened to review the action, analysing
a possible offside for the Serbian, who already has two goals this season, while the players watched from the centre circle. Not seeing any infringement, the referee signalled a goal, and Tenerife were 1-0 up, with less than 15 minutes to play. In the closing minutes of the game, Ponferradina looked to be rushing, as time was running out to attack Ortolá’s goal, and somehow find an
equaliser. In the 84th minute, they tested the Tenerife goalkeeper for the first time with a shot by Valcarce, that was deflected by the goalkeeper for a corner. It was the only shot on target by Ponferradina, in the entire match. This was the last action of a disappointing game, and Ponferradina received just punishment for their approach to it. For Tenerife, it was a solid performance, defensively, although their finishing wasn’t up to standard, but it’s the result that matters, and these three points push them up to 12th in the league, and closer to safety. At time of going to print, the Department of Health and the Spanish Football Association have announced that all La Liga and Segunda division matches are suspended for two weeks, and will be rescheduled for a later date. It’s a difficult situation, but sensibility must prevail, and CDT will have wanted to play because they are in a rich vein of form. Plus, if they could have continued with these results... who knows! Now, we will have to wait and see.
