Don’t panic! That’s advice from experts
Continued from Front
The main advice to holidaymakers is “don’t panic!” Travel advice to the Canary Islands remains unchanged and it’s still safe to travel and enjoy your holiday! What is actually happening? A group of four Italian tourists from towns in northern Italy, known to be affected by the outbreak, were diagnosed with COVID-19, more commonly known as coronavirus, after arriving in Tenerife for a holiday. The first to display symptoms was an Italian doctor, who reported to a private clinic, immediately, having recognised the flu-like symptoms. His wife and two friends, who were holidaying together, self-isolated because of the close contact, and all three have since tested positive, but haven’t shown any symptoms. Guests at the same H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel as the group have been asked to stay in their rooms as a precautionary measure only. Apart from the four Italian tourists who travelled together, no one else, neither staff nor guests, have tested positive for the virus. Yet the hotel has around 1,000 guests staying there. It’s important to know that the vast majority of people who contract the coronavirus make a full recovery, and it is no more deadly than a
common bout of flu. Guests at risk are elderly people, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, such as respiratory problems or a weakened immune system. The Jet2 airline company, which serves the hotel, has confirmed that its officials are aware of the present situation, and, in line with advice from the British Government, their flying programme remains unchanged. A Jet2 spokeswoman said: “We are aware of reports
that a non-Jet2holidays’ customer, staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace, has tested positive for coronavirus. “Under the advice of the Regional and the Spanish Government Authorities, the hotel has been placed under quarantine. “The health and safety of our customers is our absolute priority, and we will release more information as it becomes available. “In line with the Foreign &
Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice, our flying programme remains unchanged.” Meanwhile, a TUI spokesperson said: “We’re aware of a reported case of COVID-19 at the H10 Palace Hotel. All guests have been asked to remain in their rooms and are being looked after by the hotel. “Our holiday programme to Tenerife continues to operate as planned for all other hotels. We will provide a further update as soon as we have more information.” At the time of going to print,
130 guests, have been told they can return home in the next few days, but will be monitored in their own countries. The International Air Transport Association has given the following key tips: *Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth *Frequently clean hands by using alcohol-based hand rub, or soap and water *Avoid close contact with people suffering from a fever and/or a cold *When coughing or sneezing, cover nose and mouth with tissue or flexed elbow.

How to reduce your chances of catching this deadly disease THE World Health Organisation has offered the following advice for people, to reduce their chances of catching the coronavirus (COVID-19).
Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following: Wash your hands frequently Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcoholbased hand-rub, or wash them with soap and water.
Why? Either method kills viruses, which may be on your hands. Maintain social distancing Maintain at least one metre (3ft 3in) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. Why? When someone coughs or sneezes, they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth, which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus, should the person coughing have the disease. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated,
hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and may make you sick. Practise respiratory hygiene Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately. Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene, you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19. If you have fever, cough and
difficulty breathing, seek medical care early Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority. Why? National and local authorities will have the most up-to-date information on the situation in your area. Phoning in advance will allow your health-care provider to direct you to the right health facility, quickly. This will also protect you, and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections. Stay informed and follow advice given by your
healthcare provider Keep an eye on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer, on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. Why? National and local authorities will have the most current information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what people there should be doing to protect themselves. They also have advice on how to deal with any stress you might feel during the outbreak.
Inside Tenerife’s infected hotel… THE phone inside Room 101 rings three times, before Michael picks up:
- Hello? - Hello. How are things in there? - Normal, quiet. I’m in my room all day, eating and watching TV. It’s a bit boring.
Michael should have flown back to England on Tuesday after a two-week holiday in Tenerife. But his hotel, the H10 Costa Adeje Palace, which has a
mushroom-shaped pool in the middle of the garden, has been locked down by authorities after one guest, an Italian doctor, tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus on Monday His wife has also tested positive, as did two more Italians on Tuesday evening. Trapped inside the hotel are 800 guests from 25 countries, and around 200 workers. And, like Michael, they are killing time as best they can. The hotel, located by a road, is surrounded by villas and beach bars. Two security perimeters have been created around it. The outer one is guarded by the Local Police, and the inner one by the National Police. Within this smaller area, medical personnel have set up a field hospital to treat any potential patients, should anyone inside the hotel develop symptoms of the coronavirus. Near the hotel, it’s business as usual. The only sign that something out of the ordinary is happening is the fact that all the people who work in the area, such as taxi drivers, police officers and waiters, are wearing face masks. But tourists on their way to the beach seem entirely unconcerned.
The staff members, who were not at the hotel when authorities locked it down, showed up for work on Tuesday regardless. Doctors conducted various tests, and since none of them showed any symptoms, they were told to go home until further notice. “All of them have signed a document, pledging not to leave their homes for the next two weeks,” said Ruth Giménez, the union member who represent the hotel staff. “There will be nobody to watch them, but they have a commitment to society, and I am sure they will honour it.” Most of the guests are opting to stay in their rooms, although the boldest ones have been down to the pool, and even the bar! There is a catering service, courtesy of a nearby hotel which is also part of the H10 chain. At mid-afternoon on Tuesday, a refrigerator truck crossed both perimeters to deliver food. Inside the hotel lobby, 3,000 facemasks and 300 pairs of latex gloves were also handed out for protection. A safety distance of no less than five metre is kept between outside visitors and people in the hotel, according to security personnel. Relatives of the hotel
employees were seen coming and going all afternoon, bringing clothes, toiletries and iPads, and none of them seemed particularly alarmed. The explanations provided by the authorities have convinced them that the situation is under control, even though the Italian couple who tested positive may have spread the virus during their one-week stay. Felipe, whose wife Ruth María works as a waitress at the hotel, showed up with a travel bag. “My wife is an athlete. She runs half-marathons,” said Felipe, who left their 11-year-old son at home. “I understand that this mostly affects elderly people and those with health problems. But my wife is as strong as an ox.” A Belgian couple on bicycles showed up next and asked the police to let them through. The man, clearly in his seventies, took off his helmet and explained that they live in a little house, right next to the hotel. The coronavirus may have struck fear into the hearts of millions, but he kept right on smiling. “We are very happy. We trust the Spanish Government,” he said proudly.

COBCAN official statement On Tuesday, the day the Costa Adeje Palace Hotel was put under quarantine, Matías Fonte-Padilla, the dean of COBCAN (Official College of Biologists of the Canary Islands), sent a message of reassurance regarding the new cases of COVID-19 coronavirus in the south of Tenerife. At the moment the focus is on treatment in a well-known hotel in the south of Tenerife, and all the people inside have been
quarantined. This does not mean that there is a real risk of high mortality or spread in the islands with lethal effects. It is a contagious disease but with a very low mortality rate. First of all, we thank the national and Canarian health authorities for their intense work in the treatment and containment of this virus, as well as their efforts to communicate and keep the population informed. Likewise, our thanks to the health personnel who are currently dedicated to this treatment, as well as to the State Security Forces and bodies for their intense work in this regard. We
call on the entire Canarian society to maintain sanity and objective vision on this issue; do not increase unnecessary and counterproductive fear. Waves of different strains of influenza travel the world every year, without creating great alarm. Let’s not encourage uncontrolled fear and panic with this disease with our comments and actions. Biologists know that the flu is a much more deadly and dangerous virus than the coronavirus COVID-19, and this alarm is not created, it simply acts as with any other contagious disease of low
Colombian in La Gomera is infected with the virus
DESPITE the positive advice from travel experts, the coronavirus is spreading across Europe, and Italy is the most-affected, with hundreds of cases now confirmed and some 30 deaths. On Wednesday evening, the Canarian Government announced that a fifth person, a Columbian living in La Gomera, had tested positive for the disease, recently named COVID-19. Meanwhile, British authorities have revealed two new cases, with one man, apparently, catching the virus while on holiday in Tenerife, and the other while in Italy. This man has a son who attends a junior school in Buxton, Derbyshire, and, after arriving home, the father sent his boy to
school the following day. Consequently, the school, which has 300 pupils, was forced to close its doors as a precaution. Both affected Brits were taken to different hospitals and are in isolation wards. Yesterday afternoon (Thursday), it was confirmed that Spain’s medical authorities had issued a warning about the needless wearing of facemasks. They have no magic about them, and will jeopardise supplies for those in need, because they will be infected already. The Spanish Health Ministry has already said the virus is spread by tiny respiratory droplets, which can be transmitted by close, face-toface contact. But there’s no risk while you’re walking in the street.
mortality. WHO estimates the mortality rate of COVID-19 coronavirus between 2% and 4% in Wuhan and only 0.7% outside it. However, due to the flu in Spain in the 2017/2018 season, some 800,000 people were infected, of which 52,000 were hospitalised, and approximately 15,000 people died, without creating a widespread panic. We must be extremely cautious in how this matter is treated, because it can degenerate into a false panic among the population that leads to political actions motivated by fear rather than by a real
threat. Decisions must be strictly technical, based on objective public health criteria. Extreme measures, such as the suspension of public events or the limitation of movements, can affect the lives of citizens and economic sectors of vital importance to Canarian society. Biologists are at the entire disposal of any citizen or public institution that wants more information. Please follow the instructions of the authorities in this regard. Tenerife students given the all-clear EIGHTEEN Tenerife students, from the Escuelas Pías school in Santa Cruz, who were tested as part of the coronavirus protocol in German’s Munich city, have proved negative.
The boys, who attend the first year of Baccalaureate, spent the last day of a trip that took them through France, Switzerland and, now, Germany, from where they planned to return home yesterday (Thursday). The German health services intervened when some of the
students felt ill during a visit to the Herrenchiemsee castle. The four schoolchildren, who displayed the most severe flu symptoms, were transferred immediately to the hospital, where they remained under observation with a dozen more, who experienced milder symptoms. The rest, who showed no symptoms, returned to the hotel. Gradually, the young people, who suffered the mild flu symptoms which had spread through the group, were discharged.

Police clamp down on child-porn ring NATIONAL Police officers have arrested 15 people in nine provinces, including Tenerife and Gran Canaria, involved in distributing large volumes of child pornographic material on the internet, through social networks. Investigations began when the National Police received information, through Spain’s US Embassy, regarding several investigations carried out by America’s National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children
(NCMEC), which related to prostitution and corruption of minors. Also, a well-known social network reported that several of its users had published on in their accounts, audiovisual material regarding sexual exploitation of children. Some of them kept creating new accounts with false data, so they could continue sharing the illegal files with other users of the social network. The National Police continues to warn users of any social network, that sharing or saving such images is a crime. This type of content must be reported to both the social network itself and/or the Police.
Clooneys and twins spotted in La Palma GEORGE and Amal Clooney have flown to La Palma with their twins, amid divorce rumours.
There is even speculation that that they are embroiled in a custody battle over their twins. However, they debunked the rumours in their recent sighting, reports La Vanguardia, via Hola! The couple were spotted arriving in the Tazacorte municipality of La Palma last Sunday. They were also seen relaxing and enjoying the place with their kids. The publication noted that Amal and the twins were rarely seen outside the hotel. However, the Money Monster star was out and about as he filmed The Midnight Sky, and it wasn’t surprising that George’s wife and kids stayed behind because the family have always maintained their privacy. Prior to their sighting, there was much speculation about George and Amal having marital issues. Radar Online previously reported that George hadn’t been seen with his family for 200 days, and that he was, allegedly, working on a bitter divorce case against the humanitarian lawyer. “George and Amal have
Museum overnighters boost visitor numbers
THE Museum of Fine Arts, based in Santa Cruz, welcomed 20,617 visitors during 2019, of which 13,511 were Spanish and the remaining 5,568, foreigners. The children numbered 979, thanks mainly to promotion campaigns launched by the city council, to publicise cultural heritage among the population’s youngest sectors. These activities include, The Sleeping Museum, which allows children to stay one night in the museum, when it closes its doors to the public.
been arguing over their varying lifestyles, and rumours of a rift have been going around for months,” a source told the publication. “She’s all business, he’s all play. They’re like oil and water. They don’t mix, and there’s talk of a possible custody fight over the twins.” There were also claims that George was cheating on Amal with his friend, Julia Roberts. In fact, George and Julia have worked on several films in the past, which has drawn them closer throughout the years. Just like the Clooneys, Julia has twins. But others have taken their closeness to the next level by adding a romantic twist to the relationship. But the rumoured romance between Julia and George was untrue, according to credible sources.

Apart from the permanent exhibition, it also has temporary exhibition halls. During 2019, eight exhibitions were held in the Sala Pedro González, the most visited being the anthology of José Carlos Gracia, which attracted 5,035 people. This exhibition, which included more than 100 paintings, was integrated by works from different stages, between 1960 and 2018, some of them belonging to private collections which were granted expressly for the exhibition. The next temporary exhibition, which had a better reception, was the exhibition Cristino de Vera, composed of 13 oil paintings and eight drawings, produced by the painter
between 1954 and 1955. The biennial photography exhibition Fotonoviembre was attended by 4,051 spectators, while Nido, a musical project by singer Marta Solís, transformed into a visual work and drew 1,884. But the Museum of Fine Arts also hosted numerous, cultural exhibitions, not directly related to painting, such as book presentations, concert cycles, educational workshops, conferences and poetic-musical evenings, as well as the recording of a short film about women with disabilities. History days were also held in the art gallery, which included talks by experts, who spoke on the intangible heritage of Santa Cruz.
Tourists’ spending down TENERIFE broke all visitor records last year, according to data released by the Cabildo’s Tourism Minister. More than 6.1 million people spent their holidays on the island, yet it failed to improve tourists’ spending, which actually went down by more than €300m in just one year. Specifically, it was 5% lower than 1998, despite the travellers’ increase.

La Caleta campers now rule the roost!
THE Telesforo Bravo Juan Coello Foundation, a nature preservation group, has served a denuncia on people camping on the Adeje coast, specifically around La Caleta. And not for the first time! The Foundation, disappointed with reporting to the correct administration department, and receiving delays only, continue their campaign in social networks and the press, to denounce the deterioration suffered by the natural environment. The coastal occupation in the islands is affecting not only the landscape but also some ecosystems, which, though not visible to the naked eye, still suffer.
These campers are not something new, but, gradually, they have been taking over our coastlines, unimpeded. In the images and video, recorded with a drone by the Foundation, the deterioration of these areas is clear. Huts, shacks, fixtures and rubbish, as well as stones stacked right next to the sea, demonstrate our heritage… our most precious assets are being razed, and nothing is being done to avoid it. In La Caleta and the Diego Hernández beach, members of the Guardia Civil’s animal and environment protection group, Seprona, have acted frequently, with Adeje Council collaborating to “clean” the area. But it has become evident that more is needed, because, a few days later, the settlements return.

Potential side-effects included heart attacks and death
‘Natural-remedy’ sales gang were in Canaries POLICE have busted a gang, selling powerful, impotency drugs as “natural remedies” in Spain, including the Canary Islands, and the UK.
The Spanish police said the unscrupulous criminals plied their trade, despite knowing of the dangers posed, including heart attacks, strokes, and death! Consumers in Portugal, Italy, France, Germany and Russia were also targeted via a series of websites. Police found firearms and cash during raids, and the gang, knowing the drugs could be used only under medical supervision, described and marketed the products as “natural energisers”. This was to get around Customs controls, and avoid scrutiny from the health authorities, when they imported the drugs from Malaysia. It put the public at risk because the active ingredients included Tadalafil
and Sildenafil, which are known as treatment for erectile dysfunction. But because of the mislabelling, people susceptible to the possible sideeffects of these drugs, which include palpitations, irregular heartbeats and burst blood vessels, would have been unaware of the peril posed. A total of 400 National Police, Guardia Civil and tax-agency officers were involved in the operation, arresting 47 people during 12 house searches, along with conducting 55 inspections of sales points. In addition, they seized more than €500,000 in cash, seven high-end vehicles, valued at more than €300,000, and two firearms. Also, 39 bank accounts, including two
abroad, were blocked. The products, as well as being sold on the internet, were offered to gyms, herbalists and sex shops in the Canary Islands, Madrid, Alicante, Gerona, Barcelona, Tarragona, Valencia, Almeria, Jaen, Granada, Sevilla, Malaga, Leon, Salamanca and Valladolid. One of the so-called ringleaders was arrested in Dubai, where he was said to have run the whole scam, as well as hiding from three International Arrest Warrants. The 47 detainees, all Spanish bar one Portuguese man, were charged with crimes against public health, membership of a criminal organisation, fraud and smuggling, as well as moneylaundering.

Join the Walk of Glam and be right in fashion LUPE Castro is a hugelyimportant influencer in the fashion world, travelling to global shows and events to post about trends and colours. And she happens to be Canarian!
She is fluent in both Spanish and English, and really is interested in giving back, to Tenerife, and to the world in general. In recent years she has donated her time and talent to the Walk for Life calendar, and is now involved heavily in the Canary Green movement, recently cohosting the first clothes-swap event. Now, she wants to introduce Tenerife to a Walk of Glam, taking place in Arona and Adeje on 7th and 8th of March. “The aim of this event is to raise awareness of the importance of cultural
diversity and fashion in our region,” she said. “The boroughs of Adeje and Arona alone have, between them, residents from over 100 different countries, who enjoy living side by side, in harmony and with mutual respect for each other’s cultural identity, for the similarities and for the differences.” Lupe added: “Here in Tenerife we have become, almost without knowing it, a fine example of co-existence, of inclusion, and of tolerance. “Of course, this means we have people among us of great glamour, of inspiring personality and character, regardless of age, nationality, or gender. And this really is something to celebrate.” The inspiration for the Walk of Glam came to her, thanks to a recent talk with Stella Ahangi https://www. stellaahangi.de/ , artist, muse, and German influencer. Stella is passionate about fashion, and is a leader in her country of a cultural movement called the
Glamorous Eccentric Club. It is for those who share the freedom and courage to be themselves, as long as they express it with their external appearance. And the club has performed a number of Walks of Glam. The walk is just that! People will meet up at the start, and all types of people are invited… simply, bring your own flair and élan, your magic and your mojo. In fact, organisers of the
Tenerife events, and others, naturally, are hoping for a terrific mix of age, culture and outlook! You will walk a route, stopping along the way at various places which celebrate fashion, glamour, and diversity. Lupe added: “Stella has agreed to come to Tenerife for the event, and the walk will also be joined by Luis Oliveira https://www. oliveiraluis.com/en. Each day, in the two
boroughs, the walk will last for about two hours, stopping at different establishments which have agreed to collaborate, and have chosen to be sponsors. “We will take photos, make videos, and conduct interviews and disseminate them with various publishers, and in a number of publications, as well as on social networks,” said Lupe. “The companies’ logos will be displayed at the starting point of the walk, and at strategic points along the journey.” The meeting place for the Arona walk, on 7th March, is the Tigotan Hotel at 5pm sharp, and for the Adeje walk on 8th March, you meet at the Bahia del Duque shopping centre, also at 5pm. From there you will walk, talk, engage, and, no doubt, have a lot of fun along the way. If you can’t walk this time, you can follow Lupe Castro on MsCastrorides on Instagram and Facebook.

The sky is orange: Canary Island’s Calima
All hands on board for wind-damaged Adeje
ADEJE Council is employing all resources necessary to deal with the incidents resulting from the borough’s strong winds over the “calima” weekend. Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga, who had attended a meeting all day Monday with the CECOPAL, Adeje Council’s emergency co-ordination central body, said they had been working on attending all incidents, and, most importantly, there had been no reports of injury to anyone. In fact, the villages away from Costa Adeje had been more affected by the weather. The Council was using social media to keep people
updated and asked that you rang 112 if you needed assistance. Some zones have been affected by electricity cuts, including Tijoco Alto, La Quinta, La Concepción, and Fañabé, but the Council had been working with Endesa to restore power. The entrances to the Adeje Farmers’ Market were damaged, while Armeñime and Adeje football stadiums were also affected. And commercial centres such as Siam Mall, Plaza del Duque, Galeón Outlet y Rosa Centre were closed. Fañabe’s HiperDino experienced roof damage, with part of it caving in.
North’s fires snuffed out AFTER five days, 100 hours
of work, some 20 fires in six municipalities, and more than 500 personnel involved in the north of Tenerife, the main dangers have been cleared. Among the safety personnel involved are BomberosTf, volunteer firefighters, BRIFOR (forestry brigade), UMEgob Militaries Emergency Unit), Civil Protection and Police officers. But they still have to carry out surveillance work and damping down in the affected areas. The island’s recreational areas and camping sites, managed by the Cabildo, continue to stay closed, but the situation was reviewed again yesterday (Thursday).

The day our world changed to orange THE weather in the Canary Islands was slowly becoming transformed last Saturday, with high winds and hot air, thick with sand, because of the anticipated calima. By the evening, both airports in Tenerife and the one in Gran Canaria, were experiencing delays, and many incoming flights were diverted from the islands. The winds had picked up and Tenerife was given an official storm warning, with winds up to 120km/h, which registered as a Category 1 hurricane. These winds were beginning to cause problems, sparking fires in certain areas over the islands, fuelled by the storm, especially in the north of Tenerife. As a result, the Saturdaynight carnival celebrations in Santa Cruz were postponed. By Sunday, the wind warnings
had been reduced from hurricane level, but the volume of sand in the air was really thick over the majority of the island, and visibility was significantly worse. Strong winds, gusting to more than 100mph, and carrying clouds of red sand, buffeted the region, creating an impenetrable orange haze, which saw all flights from Gran Canaria grounded and a state of alert declared across the archipelago Siam Mall and Galeon Outlet centre were closed, as was Fañabe’s HiperDino, because of the storm damage. And the Anglican Church cancelled all its services for safety
reasons. By midday, the entire island was starting to take on an eerie, all-round orange colour, and by Sunday afternoon the airports were closed again. Yet though the air in the region has been classed as “the most contaminated and dangerous for health” in the world, on the World Air Quality Index (AQI), Sunday’s Carnival still went ahead in Santa Cruz, regardless (photo below). The intensity of the sand made everything appear an orangey/red, and photographer Nelson Acosta’s picture, which he dubbed “Blood Sunset”, went viral. By Monday, the calima had eased off, certainly by Sunday’s standards, but the air was still hazy. Airports in the Canary Islands were operational, but delays were expected. However, clearer skies meant improved visibility, which was good news for residents, as well as travellers.

A GRAVE, believed to be from between the 8th-10th Century and containing 72 preHispanic “Guanche” natives, has been discovered on Gran Canaria. An amateur archaeologist, from the group El Legado, flew a drone over the Valley of Guayadequeon and identified the ancient, sacred site last June. But the team of researchers, who unearthed adult and newborn Guanche Mummies, informed authorities of the

The Guanches were the Canary Islands’ aboriginal inhabitants, and, in 2017, the first genome-wide data project confirmed that they were of North African origin, descended from the Berbers of Libya. These hunter-gatherers, with a rudimentary knowledge of farming, migrated to the

archipelago around 1,000 BC and lived in caves and huts. Their rituals, similar to those of ancient Egyptians, led them to embalm and mummify their members of higher social standing, who were left in caves, while the lower classes were buried in the ground. The amateur archaeologists identified the unique site, which, the archaeologists found, contained the mummified remains of 72 pre-Hispanic Guanche natives, comprising 62 adults and 10 newborns. Archaeologist Veronica Alberto, and Gran Canaria Culture Councillor Javier Velasco, told local media that while there were many burial caves on the island, “there were not many like this one”. It was discovered, filled with the remains of the aboriginal Guanche inhabitants from before the islands were colonised, between 1402 and 1496, at which time the Guanches were absorbed, ethnically and culturally, by the settlers. Gran Canaria boasts around 1,200 archaeological sites, but this site is unique because newborn remains were never found in previous excavations.
And, during the study, the remains of the burial shrouds, traditionally made from animal skin or vegetable fibres, were also discovered. This tells the scientists that all the pre-Hispanic people in the Canary Islands were prepared, similarly, for burial ceremonies, according to Ms Alberto. The cave was identified at the end of June 2019 by members of the amateur archaeology group “El Legado”, formed by Ayose Himar Gonzalez, Jonay Garcia, and Jesus Diaz. It is located at 23 feet (seven metres) above ground, and Gonzalez said they took some
aerial pictures of the cave. But people thought the photos were fake because of all the bones. The archaeological experts had a hard time climbing to the cave because it is located, deliberately, they said, “in a very difficult place to access”, and they needed to climb a nearly-sheer cliff to reach the cave-tomb. In a Daily Mail report, Gonzalez said it should be closed off and preserved, with the bones left where they were. They decided to report it, he said, because they wanted the local authorities to “preserve and respect it”.

Brexit uncertainty and Budget expectations
at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. The pound has traded in a wide range, over the past couple of weeks, as speculation over the UK’s upcoming Budget and lingering Brexit uncertainty dominated movement in the pairing. This has seen GBP/ EUR trade between 1.17 and 1.20, as EUR/GBP slipped to 0.83. Meanwhile, GBP/USD fluctuated between 1.28 and 1.30, whilst EUR/USD slumped from 1.09 to 1.07. What’s been happening? The pound rocketed higher in mid-February, rising to a
new 2020 high, as market expectations for the UK government’s upcoming Budget were buoyed, after Rishi Sunak took over as Chancellor of the Exchequer. However, sterling subsequently fell back in the second half of February, with lingering Brexit jitters overshadowing a run of upbeat, UK, economic
data. The euro has weakened, over the past couple of weeks, undermined by some lacklustre Eurozone data, and fears that Germany may be on the brink of a recession. Meanwhile, the rising panic surrounding the coronavirus has driven considerable demand for the US dollar, in
recent weeks, as investors flocked to the safe-haven currency. What do you need to look out for? In the UK, the spotlight is likely to remain on Brexit, in the weeks to come, as formal trade negotiations between the UK and EU finally get underway.
operator for those requiring further information, or those who have a specific query, not dealt with by the automated options. The Government has updated its Brexit information page to inform British citizens already living in Spain, or planning to do so before the end of the transition period, about the need to be registered properly. For the time being, it states, the process remains the same as it was before Brexit and the green credit card, or the older A4 certificates, will be valid throughout the transition period, until 31st December 2020. An update in the Brexit section on the Moncloa website states: “During this transition period, UK nationals and their family members resident in Spain, who are nationals of non-EU countries, will maintain their rights, derived from the application of EU law (except for the right to vote and stand in elections to the European Parliament, and
the right to use the EU Citizens Initiative). “Once the transition period ends, the Withdrawal Agreement stipulates that your rights of residence, work, study and social security, will be maintained. “You must bear in mind that the registration certificates (the green certificate) and ID cards of family members of the EU citizen, obtained before the end of the transition period, will, subsequently, serve to accredit their le-
gal residence in Spain and benefit from the provisions of the Withdrawal Agreement.” But the website does state that plans are afoot for new paperwork, specifically for Brits resident in Spain postBrexit. “The Spanish Government is working together with the European Commission to have a Foreign Identity Card that mentions your condition explicitly, as beneficiary of the Withdrawal
Eurozone data is likely to continue acting as the main catalyst of movement in EUR exchange rates, in the next couple of weeks, likely dragging on the euro, if the data continues to print poorly. Meanwhile, coronavirus concerns are likely to keep the US dollar supported, for the time being, but USD investors will also be keeping a close eye on the Democratic presidential primaries, to see who is likely to challenge Donald Trump, later this year. Government launches a dedicated Brexit hotline
THE Spanish Government has launched a dedicated hotline to answer all queries about the implications of Brexit, from Brits living in Spain.
Callers can ring 060 when in Spain or +34 902 887060 if calling from abroad, and an automated system will offer the choice of either Spanish or English. It will apply if you are Spanish citizen wanting to live in the UK, or a Brit in Spain. You will then be offered a choice of information on the different issues most pressing for Brits in Spain, during the transition period: residency, healthcare, retirement pensions, social security and driving licences. Each option comes with an automated message about the current status relating to those matters, and how it will remain unchanged during the transition period. The service also offers the option of speaking to an
Agreement. The procedure for processing this card in the coming months will be completed soon.” It adds: “The rights of British citizens and their family members, who begin their legal residence in Spain after the transition period, will be those established by the agreement regulating future relations. “If there is none, the general arrangements governing foreign residents in Spain will be applicable.”

McDonald & Dodds
Brand new detective drama McDonald & Dodds starts on ITV this Spring. A series of feature length crime mysteries comprising of two intriguing stories in its first outing, it stars BAFTA winner Jason Watkins (The Crown, The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, W1A) and Tala Gouveia (Cold Feet). Set in Bath, the detective drama pairs the wildly ambitious DCI McDonald with the shy, modest DS Dodds. While McDonald has transferred from the mean streets of South London to leap up the career ladder, Dodds has happily languished on the shelf for most of his working life. McDonald is a tough, driven, battering ram of a cop who cracks cases through sheer force of will; Dodds – the tortoise to her hare – is quiet, unassuming and enigmatic. But thrust back into frontline action for the first time in a decade, he discovers a hidden talent for deciphering puzzles. Two contemporary Britons, thrown together with seemingly with nothing in common, boss McDonald and loyal sidekick Dodds forge a rumbustious, entertaining and ultimately – give or take a few setbacks – effective partnership. Episode 1 - The Fall of The House of Crockett When a homeless man is shot in the deserted mansion of one of Bath’s most prominent industrialists, the inventor Max Crockett, newly arrived Londoner DCI McDonald and longserving DS Dodds rally together to try and discover the killer. In the Crockett family, they find an outwardly perfect, close-knit group with three successful daughters in loving relationships, devoid of any obvious motive to murder, but it soon becomes apparent that each have their own secrets to hide.

Ready Steady Cook is back in a revamped format, featuring Rylan Clark-Neal as host, alongside exciting talent from the culinary world - Mike Reid, Romy Gill, Akis Petretzikis, Ellis Barrie and Anna Haugh. The new show reflects contemporary food themes, from cooking on a budget to eating healthily, managing food waste and feeding the whole family - mirroring the changes in food and British cooking over the past decade. In every episode two contestants are each paired with a chef, going head to head in the newly designed Ready Steady Cook kitchen. But in this new series, the chefs face two different taste tests and the clock is always ticking! In the first challenge, each contestant is armed with their bag of ingredients, all bought within a range of prices from £3.50 to £10. They have just 20 minutes to create delicious, surprising and inspiring dishes ready to wow the discerning studio audience. There are further twists along the way including wildcard ingredients. The revamped second challenge is even faster, as each pair has just 10 minutes to create yet more amazing dishes, this time based on audience ingredients cards. With unlikely combinations always a possibility, the pressure is on to create yet more flavour sensations. And in true Ready Steady tradition the casting vote on the show’s winner is left to the audience, who have their say on the best dishes by voting with the iconic red tomato and green pepper voting cards. In episode one Rylan unveils a brand-new kitchen and introduces us to chefs: award-winning Anna Haugh and globe-trotting Mike Reid. They are joined in the kitchen by today’s contestants, Gemma and Brian from Falkirk. Brian does all the cooking at home and describes Gemma as a terrible cook. As they battle it out in the Green Pepper and Red Tomato kitchens, can our chefs teach this couple a few new tricks and help Gemma expand her repertoire from beans on toast with cheese on top?

Tigers: Hunting The Traffickers Royal Marines Commando Aldo Kane exposes the shocking secrets of the illegal tiger trade in South East Asia and those who profit. It’s estimated that 96 percent of the world’s wild tigers have disappeared since the turn of the 20th century. With fewer than 4,000 tigers left in the wild, Tigers: Hunting The Traffickers also highlights the plight of a majestic species on the brink of extinction. It explores how tiger farms continue to drive consumer demand for tiger products, perpetuating the illegal trade and fuelling poaching. There are up to 8,000 tigers held in captive facilities across China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Captive tigers are often bred and trafficked to meet demand for illegal products like tiger-bone wine and tiger bone glue, which are believed to have medicinal values in parts of Asia, mainly in China and Vietnam. Working alongside fearless wildlife crime investigators and covertly filming tiger traffickers, Aldo embarks on a perilous journey along key trafficking routes connecting Malaysia, China, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. From tiger wine breweries in China to small backyard holdings in Vietnam, the programme uncovers shocking evidence of demand for tiger parts that threatens to wipe out wild tigers entirely. Evidence includes footage of frozen tiger cubs in freezers at a breeding facility in Laos, tigers held in high security holding pens in Thai zoos, a trader openly selling tiger products in Laos with a street value higher than cocaine, and caged tigers fattened in a dark basement in Vietnam to be killed and cooked to order. Armed with the secret filmed evidence from the investigation Aldo travels to Geneva where it is presented to international decision-makers at the Convention On International Trade In Endangered Species to act on.

Win The WIlderness: Alaska In the final episode of Win The Wilderness, the two remaining couples fly to Ose Mountain one last time. In just 48 hours, Duane and Rena will name which of them should take over their home on Ose Mountain. Arriving to a boarded-up house, Duane and Rena surprise the couples by not actually being there to greet them. The Oses want to give the couples a night by themselves so they can experience what life could be like for them as the new owners. Touring the empty property, one couple begin to make plans for the future, while tensions emerge between the other. The next morning the couples wake up to the sound of an incoming plane and Duane and Rena’s arrival. After a quick catch up, both pairs are put to work on two crucial final tests. One couple is tasked with cutting windows into the Oses’ loft, the other must raise a new windsock on Duane’s hand cleared airstrip. In the evening Duane and Rena invite each couple to sit down with them one on one, to hear their reasons why they wish to be the next owners of their home. The next day Duane and Rena take an emotional final tour of the home they spent over 30 years building, before delivering their verdict and naming the new owners of Ose Mountain.

“It’s frightening, you know you can’t get out. We’ve got windows you can jump out of, but what do you jump into? Six foot of torrent that’s going to sweep you away into the river. So you’re trapped inside.” - Roger Benn, travel agent in Mytholmroyd As Britain is battered by ever more extreme weather, this one-off documentary visits the country’s hardest-hit towns and villages to gain a unique perspective of the devastation caused by worsening flooding. Featuring dramatic footage of flooded-out residents being evacuated from communities including Mytholmroyd in Yorkshire and Tenbury Wells in Worcestershire during the recent Storms Ciara and Dennis, the programme also has access to workers from the Environment Agency, chronicling their attempts to stop the flow. In December 2015 the Calder Valley in Yorkshire was devastated by floods and as a result millions of pounds were invested in defences. Some of those, however, including a £30m scheme in the village of Mytholmroyd, were not due to be completed until this summer. So when Storm Ciara hit Mytholmroyd early in February, it was quickly deluged in 5ft of water, meaning residents and business owners couldn’t protect their properties in time. Salon owner Rebecca Haigh says: “We can’t get flood insurance for businesses so once again we’ve lost everything, we’ve lost thousands of pounds’ worth of stock. It really is devastating.“ Many now face months of repair work and questions are being raised about why the flooding was much more severe than predicted and why existing barriers didn’t hold. Suzanne Stankard, a Leeds Arts University lecturer, says: “The water’s a metre high, nobody can get in or out. I was upstairs and I just cried, really bawled my eyes out, just [at] the trauma of it - it’s like a violation.” The programme shows business owners confronting Environment Agency staff about the floods in a heated public meeting as villagers brace themselves for further disaster with news that just a week later, Storm Dennis is approaching and is predicted to be even worse.

The Trouble with Maggie Cole is a drama series centering on Maggie Cole (Dawn French), the self-appointed oracle of a close-knit community. When a radio journalist interviews Maggie about local life, she gives him far more detail and embellishment about the locals and their personal lives than he was counting on. Following the broadcast, Maggie gets into trouble as the fallout disrupts the lives of some of her fellow residents. Maggie also has to face some dark secrets that her own family has been harbouring. Episode 1: Maggie Cole is flattered when a radio journalist interviews about the history of Thurlbury. In her excitement and with the help of a couple of G&Ts, she shares gossip about some notable residents in the community… in particular; local GP Carol, publican Brian, author Marcus Ormansby, hairdresser Kelly, teaching assistant Roxanna and Maggie’s best friend Jill. Maggie throws a garden party for the broadcast, aided by her husband Peter, son Jamie and daughter-in-law Becka. Maggie’s interview is played in full and all the guarded secrets, indiscretions and gossip are broadcast for the whole county to hear, changing life in Thurlbury forever.

THREE hooded young men committed a robbery, using violence and intimidation, during the early hours of Thursday, after checking out a Costa Adeje supermarket earlier that day. The trio used knives and a bottle to intimidate a man inside the shop, in the Mare Verde area of Torviscas, and they are thought to have stolen around €600 after forcing the till. The robbery, which occurred minutes before 4am, was captured by one of the company’s video surveillance cameras. But the thieves covered their faces with hoods, as well as scarves, as seen in the video.

During her speech, Xiana Méndez highlighted the strong, economic and commercial ties that characterise the relationship between Spain and the UK, and the desire that “they endure post-Brexit. A broad and deep, free trade
agreement between the EU and the UK, the negotiations of which will begin shortly, will be instrumental to this.” Winners of the first UK-Spain Business Awards: *Category “Growth in the UK”: InCom and Consentino *Category “Driving Collaboration”: Fenin and Finnovating *Category “Winning Business in Spain”: Babcock and Oncimmune *Category “Partnership in Business”: Isolée and Fricodan *Category “New UK investor”: AISTech and TRIA *Category “Clean Growth”: Solarcentury *Category “British Investment in Spain”, awarded by the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain: GlaxoSmithKline and Savills Aguirre Newman *Category “Spanish Investment in the UK”, awarded by Banco Santander: Irizar and Sagardi The UK and Spain have had an extensive business relationship for decades, and, according to data published by the UK’s Office for National Statistics, trade in goods and services between the two countries was €60bn in 2018, and has continued to grow in recent years. In the same year, the trade balance was favourable for Spain: the UK’s exports to Spain reached €22bn, while
imports from Spain were €38bn. The UK is the second-largest investor in Spain, and was the first worldwide destination for foreign, direct investment, in Spain, with over 400 Spanish companies registered in the United Kingdom. Department for International Trade (DIT) The UK Ministry of International Trade (DIT) is responsible for promoting the British trade sector worldwide, and attracting foreign investment to the British economy. It is a specialist government agency and is responsible for negotiating trade policies and supporting businesses, as well as promoting a diplomatic and commercial strategy abroad. British Chamber of Commerce Founded in Barcelona in 1908, the British Chamber of Commerce is the only independent, British-Hispanic business organisation in Spain. Its objective is to foster and create trade and investment relations independently between both countries, with a key role in supporting newlyarrived companies. The Chamber, represented through British Chambers in the UK, has an exclusive database which includes over 800 associate companies and institutions. With offices in Barcelona,

Interestingly, the same trio had been in the supermarket several hours earlier, pretending to be customers. Other images show how one of them makes suspicious movements with his head, supposedly, to mask his identity. It is suspected that a fourth individual acted as a driver for the escape.

Santander Bank Banco Santander (SAN SM, STD US, BNC LN) is a leading retail and commercial bank, founded in 1857 and headquartered in Spain. It has a meaningful presence in 10 core markets in Europe and the Americas, and is one of the largest banks in the world by market capitalisation. Its purpose is to help people and businesses prosper in a simple, personal and fair way. Santander is building a more responsible bank and has made a number of commitments to support this objective, including raising over €120bn in green financing between 2019 and 2025, as well as financially empowering more than 10 million people over the same period. At the end of 2019, Banco Santander had €1.05 trillion in total funds, 145 million customers, of which 21.6 million are loyal and 37 million are digital (52% of active customers), 12,000 branches and 200,000 employees. Banco Santander made an underlying profit of € 8,252m in 2019, a 2% increase, compared with the previous year.
UK-Spain’s first business awards THE British Embassy in Madrid, through its Department for International Trade (DIT), along with the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain and Banco Santander, have staged the first UK-Spain Business Awards. These awards, presented at the Palacio de La Bolsa, in Madrid, recognised companies such as Cosentino Babcock, InCom, Solarcentury, GlaxoSmithKline and Savills Aguirre Newman, at a gala, chaired by the British Ambassador and attended by Spanish Trade Minister Xiana Méndez These Business Awards recognise companies which have helped to build the strong, commercial relationship between the two countries, through their day-to-day business. There were 15 awards in eight categories: six were granted by the Embassy (Growth in the UK, Driving Collaboration, Winning Business in Spain, Partnership in Business, New UK investor and Clean Growth); one by the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain (Brit-

Riddle over arrested woman from Russia
A RUSSIAN woman has been arrested in Spain, possibly following a request by the US, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry. The Spanish Embassy has been asked to do everything possible to provide assistance to Olesya Krasilova, who had arrived in Tenerife for a short business trip as part of an official delegation, on 14th February. Ms Krasilova, detained when departing from Tenerife South Airport, works for the All-Russian Centre for Plant Quarantine, which is a
subordinate of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision. She is being held in a penal facility here, according to the Russian Ministry’s statement, and she has been visited by employees of the Russian consul’s office. A Ministry spokesperson said: “According to the unofficial information that we have, Krasilova’s placement into custody may be related to a request by the US side.” She might have been detained on charges of transferring biometric data to third parties,” said News agency RIA Novosti. It added, citing her mother, that the detained woman “had earlier worked at the US Embassy”.
Government’s boost, to keep traders alive A PACKAGE of financial and other types of assistance to help high-street retailers, small familyrun shops and village stores, especially in rural Spain, is being prepared by the Spanish Government. Online shopping is threatening the presence of physical shops practically everywhere in the world, and Spain is particularly vulnerable to this. That’s because nearly threequarters of companies of all types are small and mediumsized businesses, owned and run by families, and with staff numbers in single figures. This is even more pronounced in Spain’s least-populated areas, such as rural parts, a long distance from their nearest coast or large city. Industry, commerce and tourism Minister Reyes Maroto, said: “A scheme is being drawn up to help retailers modernise their facilities and adapt to the digital age and new consumer habits, to become more competitive.
New technology and training on how to use it – and encouraging its use – setting up online and international sales systems, and developing protection against anti-competition practices, are among the key areas the ministry wants to act in. Support and advice via the Chambers of Commerce and local trade associations will also be offered. As yet, the volume of funding to be set aside for the schemes has not been confirmed. Reyes Maroto has been working on these ideas ever since she first joined the cabinet in summer 2018. She wants to adapt the strategies to help streamline the transition for younger workers taking over from those due to retire, and to make retail technology easy to use for more elderly customers without computer skills.
Plastic removal A RESEARCH team of chemistry postgraduates have developed an ingenious material capable of absorbing microplastics from the sea.
The hybrid substance is able to extract polluting materials, including dyes and other contaminants. With its metal-organic structure (MOF-74) and porous carbon, the material can be used, with a magnet, to clean up aquatic environments. The team, led by Gemma Turnes, made the breakthrough at Mallorca’s University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). Researcher Mateo del Rio, who focused his doctoral thesis on solving water-pollution problems, says the material is perfect for removing pollutants because it is extremely stable, both chemically and thermally, and is also easy to
regenerate. According to his study, published in the ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces scientific journal, the new hybrid material can extract pollutants from water in just 10 minutes. It can be used to clean small samples of contaminated water, and Mateo also believes it could serve to monitor sea pollution… leading, possibly, to more extensive measures being carried out by the local authorities. The young chemist stressed the need to raise awareness in society about safeguarding the environment. He expressed his hope that water samples be taken from the Bay of Palma, to be analysed by the group to deter-
mine pollution levels. “You have to locate where the problems are, to act as soon as possible and respond to natural disasters,” he added. Today, there is much concern about the over-exploitation of natural resources, which has led to a range of measures being rolled out across the Balearics. In Mallorca and Menorca alone, it is estimated that some 752 million plastic particles, weighing a total of 3.7 tons, are present in the sea. The vast majority are microplastics of under five millimetres in size, as detailed in a recent study by the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies.
BLEVINS Franks’ staff are dedicating Thursday 5th March towards raising awareness of the Blevins Franks’ Charitable Foundation, established in 2017.
If you would like to know more about the Blevins Franks’ Charitable Foundation, wish to donate, or know of a worthy cause local to the Canary Isles, then please call Alison at the Tenerife Office, who,
as a Foundation committee member, is there to help. And feel free to show your support by wearing something red on the 5th! canaryisles@blevinsfranks.com 922 716 079
Red Alert! Paul Montague and his team, Adele and Alison (both pictured), along with all other staff members throughout the Blevins Franks community in the UK and Europe, will be wearing something red to show their support, and organising various fundraising events, throughout the day. The Foundation try to make a difference to those less fortunate in the Canaries, and the other areas in which the firm is based, by means of small donations to local charities, good causes or individuals in need. This is achieved, primarily, through employee contributions (which the company matches to enhance the funds raised), external donations and localised fundraising activities. To date, the Foundation has supported 170 various causes, and their grants have helped work with disadvantaged and disabled children, vulnerable adults, homelessness prevention, animal rescue, anti-bullying projects, lifesaving medical projects, foodbanks and community canteens, with total donations amounting to €90,000.

Poor little mite! Why THIS sad little puppy was found abandoned on his own. We have no idea where his mum or other puppies are, but this little chap was discarded like a piece of rubbish. He’s such a sweet little dog, and will make a medium-sized dog when he’s fully grown.

Can you imagine if you were in this position, as a human? Why do animals deserve to be treated like that? I know there are a lot of questions, but they need to brought to people’s attention. We understand that people can come into difficulty sometimes, or fall on hard times, but all we want is that you ask for help, and don’t punish your dog for this. There are so many dogs and cats abandoned around the island, and all the shelters are inundated, every day. We have so many cats and dogs looking for their new forever homes, and their second chance. at K9 - day in, day out. They are depending on us and our volunteers to walk them, feed them, clean out their kennels and offer some play time. They are so loving and unique in their own way, and are ready to brighten up your life, if you let them. Can you give them a chance? Animals deserve to treated with love and respect. Some of the dogs that we have rescued have been in such terrible conditions, and are very nervous of humans and every sound they hear. It takes a long time for them to gain confidence, and to trust people again. We are very fortunate that we have so many loving and special volunteers who come
up and walk our dogs each day, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts. They take the time out of their day and help our dogs to gain confidence, and show them that there are good humans in the world. It is thanks to them we have been able to re-home a lot of dogs, over the years. We always welcome and need new volunteers, so, if you have been thinking of taking up a new hobby or doing some exercise, please come up to us any day between 9.30am-1.30pm, and do what you can to help. You will be welcomed with open arms. Please get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. Joy for Enzo! I am also delighted to say that Enzo, our longest-residing dog at K9, has gone to his forever home, and has two females and a cat for companionship! We are so delighted for him. He finally got his happy ending. All our dogs and cats are waiting to meet you, so what are you waiting for?
KittyCatz News
A happy ending! RECENTLY, KittyCatz said “Auf Wiedersehen, Pet” to Garci, who travelled to his forever home in Germany.
Our World Day of Prayer WOMEN, men and children of all ages are invited to attend this year’s World Day of Prayer (WDP), at St Blas Roman Catholic Church next Friday (6th March), at 3pm.
A WDP spokesperson said: “The women of Zimbabwe have prepared this year’s service, named ‘Rise! Take your mat and walk’, and we are encouraged to reflect on the difficulties and unrest, which have plagued their country over the years. “They share with us the challenges they have faced, along with their hopes for the future.
“They encourage us all, wherever we are, to ‘Rise, take up your mat and walk’ with them as they continue their often-turbulent journey to full reconciliation.” The Day of Prayer is celebrated, annually, in more than 170 countries. It begins in Samoa, and prayers, in native languages, travel all over the world, through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, before finishing in American Samoa, some 38 hours later. The spokesperson added: “Last year’s service was a colourful affair, so do join us for another joyful, yet poignant, service, with traditional and African hymns.” There will be refreshments afterwards, to which everyone is cordially invited.
This was made possible by working with our affiliated charity MAdAT (Manos Amigas de los Amimales de Tenerife). Although MAdAT have a refuge, there are limited spaces available, and, like most charities in Tenerife who offer sanctuary, they sadly have to turn animals away, and can only accept the most urgent cases. MAdAT have re-homed many cats and dogs abroad, but it’s a lot of work. Not only does the travel passport have to be arranged, but export paperwork has to be obtained from Santa Cruz, and prospective adoptees have to be scrutinised. All adopters have to complete an online application, and, once approved, a home visit is arranged. Then the mammoth task begins of finding chaperones willing to accompany the animal, and arranging available flights, pet passports and vaccinations.
If you are following us on social media, or these weekly newspaper articles, you’ll know that Garci, a beautiful tabbycoloured boy, had his leg removed. He was lucky enough to have donations from our intrepid skydiving duo, Teresa and Ann, who, with the added support of Sharon, raised €500 to pay for all his treatment, and his pet passport. Garci’s injury was probably the result of his leg being crushed, maybe by a car, as he was found lying in the road. Once operated on he quickly bounced back, and, in no time, was just like any active, bouncing kitten. He now lives in a wonderful home in Germany with a playmate, and both kittens chase each other and
have great fun. Three legs do not slow him down! Certain kittens are more difficult to re-home in Tenerife, because there are so many cats and kittens needing to be adopted. Those with special needs, such as being leukaemia positive, blind or three-legged like Garci, can be overlooked, and these are the kittens KittyCatz help. If you are flying to Germany, and would like to find out more about what is involved when being a chaperone, we would love to hear from you, for a no-obligation chat. There is no cost to you, because all expenses for the transport of the animal are paid by us. Follow us on Facebook or www.kittycatz.net.

What’s even better is that they’re cheaper than other high-quality protein sources, such as grass-fed beef and free-range chicken. And, if you’re trying to lose weight, research shows that protein can help curb hunger and regulate your appetite. Eggs offer portion control. Depending on the size, one egg provides roughly 70-80 calories and six grams of protein, making it easy to keep track of your daily nutrient and calorie total. Best of all, eggs are incredibly versatile. It sounds strange, but they make a delicious alternative to avocados in home-made salad dressings. Puree hardboiled eggs with whatever other flavour ingredients you want, and then you have a highprotein dressing or sauce. Puree
a handful of hard-boiled eggs to the texture of hummus, and mix in a blend of mustard, garlic, lemon juice and a drop of apple cider vinegar. Pour over salads to boost your protein intake. Broth-based vegetable soups are an easy and delicious way to meet your daily vegetable quota. Unfortunately, they typically lack protein and staying power. To fix this, use poached eggs to give weak soups extra nutrients, and
stomach-filling protein. Just put the egg right on top! Egg burrito Beat a few eggs with water or milk and a pinch of salt. Preheat a non-stick pan over mediumhigh heat and pour the eggs in, cooking until just set. Fill with beans, cooked chorizo or bacon, cheese and guacamole before rolling into a burrito. Transfer to a plate, and top with sour cream and salsa.

YOU will all know by now about the unprecedented and extreme lengths I will go to bring you the golfing news from around Tenerife, and this week is no different. Yet I found myself in TV pub The Queen Vic, and I wish I could play you the EastEnders’ theme music. By the way, did you know that the theme music was also a 1986 UK No.4 chart hit, Anyone Can Fall In Love, for Anita Dobson, then the pub’s landlady. Much against the grain in the Queen Vic, an extremely polite lady asked if she could help me, and I told her I would like to speak to Mike Dickson, if possible. At that point, he appeared from the kitchen, so here I am, talking with the Queen Vic landlord, who is actually the owner. I explained why I was there, only to find out that I was in the home of Paloma Beach Golf Society. Mike couldn’t stop and talk because he was on his way to have his barnet done (a hairdresser appointment to me), but he did say he would take a look at the column, and that I should call back. As you may have now Cottoned on (Dot Cotton, geddit?) it’s not the Queen Vic in Walford’s Albert Square but the one in Los Cristianos, opposite the

I’m in tandem with our own Queen Vic Market. I did call back on Friday to find that Mike was in the UK, but his helpful staff pointed out the Paloma beach G/S notice board, and a society member, who was having coffee with his family. I introduced myself and explained why I was there, and he gave me the email address of the PBGS, who keep in touch with the members by newsletter. I discovered that this gentleman and his wife were newish society members, Phil and Sue Smith, who spend 10 weeks in Tenerife, and enjoy a round of golf. Phil also said he was part of a duo known as Tandem, a guitarand-keyboard duo, who have been playing the Yorkshire pubs and clubs for 18 years, and they come to Tenerife to escape the British winter. Phil and Ross play at the Queen Vic on Sunday evening after the golf tournament. The Paloma Beach Golf Society have been established for many years, raising a lot of money for local charities, such as Helping Hands and Fact, etc. They play golf twice a week on Golf del
Sur, on Wednesdays and Sundays, where a Hole in One has been celebrated twice, over the last couple of months. Congratulations to Mike Dickson (29th Dec) and Ray Simpson (15th Jan) on the tricky, 6th Par 3 on the south course. Once Mike is back from the UK, I will endeavour to get more information about this fantastic golf society, and I am aware that they have been mentioned in Canarian Weekly for their charitable work. Sticking with music theme, how about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, which should have been played during my round last Thursday. “The Three Pedros”, Peter Dickinson, Peter Yates and I, along with a little Scotsman, Sam McIntyre, set off to encounter every part of that theme music. When it was Good it was very good; when it was Bad it was very bad; and when it was Ugly… yes, you’ve guessed it! But we did have a laugh and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company and our game. Here are some of the results from around the societies: Adeje International (yellow shirts), 22nd Feb, Costa Adeje 1st, Val Jackman (39 pts, H22); 2nd, Sabine Adelsberger (38pts, H13); 3rd, Klaus Buntebardt
(37pts, H18). Peanuts G/S, 20th Feb, Golf del Sur 1st, Sam McGregor (34pts, H9); 2nd, James Jones (33pts H18); 3rd, David Cheetham (32pts H5). The Peanuts G/S have already arranged some Summer Golf away-days: on 11th July, Las Americas; 9th July, TBC (El Penon); 6th August, Buenavista; 3rd Sept, Costa Adeje. See the Peanuts website for details and entries. Legends G/S, 20th Feb, Los Lagos 1st, Peter Stead (39pts H28); 2nd, David Jewitt (38pts, H15); 3rd, Sean McNamara (35pts, H15). Costa Adeje Rabbits, 20th Feb, Los Lagos 1st, Michael Roche (39pts, H6); 2nd, Steven Swallow (37pts, H13); 3rd, Glad Compton (37pts, H19). 22nd Feb: 1st, Dean Wallace (40pts, H11); 2nd, Martyn Compton (39pts); 3rd, Dougie Hill (37pts, H22). As you can see, the Comptons get two winning positions, which means they can eat again (LOL). Amarilla Amigos G/S, 19th Feb, Amarilla Golf 1st, Peter Robinson (32pts, H10); 2nd, Tommy Gray (32pts, H12); 3rd, Ray Tabaener (32pts, H16). This result was decided by the Back 9 and Back 6 count-back, after a very windy round. But it still attracted 16 members and two guests.

Now Honda’s Marquez aims for seventh heaven
MARC MARQUEZ, the factory Honda motorbike rider and multiple world champion, has signed a new contract with the Repsol HRC Team and will remain at Honda until 2024. The Spaniard’s news emerged at a press conference last week, ahead of the first round of the 2020 MotoGP Championship, that the six-time world champion extended his current contract for four more years. “I am very proud to announce my renewal with Honda Racing Corporation,” said Marquez. “Honda gave me the opportunity to arrive in the MotoGP class with a factory bike in 2013. Since the first year, we have achieved success together, and I am very happy to continue being part of the Honda family. “HRC gives me the confidence to extend this partnership to obtain our common goal, and continue our story of success.” The announcement will enable Marquez to concentrate on getting back to full fitness, following a shoulder operation during the offseason, which meant that in the recent Sepang tests, he was left with 70% fitness only. In this week’s Qatar test, the 27-year-old complained that his shoulder was feeling worse than back in January, as he struggled to tame the 2020 RC213V. Next year marks the end of the majority of factory contracts across the grid, meaning that negotiations are in full swing to fill the top seats. But Honda have, seemingly, followed in the footsteps of rivals Yamaha in securing their riders early on in the process. Last month, the Yamaha squad announced that current rider Maverick Vinales would be joined by satellite sensation Fabio Quartararo and “newly-retired” Spanish legend Jorge Lorenzo as test rider, forming a dream team to try to dislodge the orange Honda from the top.

CD Tenerife EVERYONE was in party mood last Saturday at the Heliodoro, as Tenerife entertained Elche in the second of their backto-back home games. As is tradition, the newly-elected Carnival Queen was there to take the first kick, as a visible orange glow from the calima sandstorm started to encroach on Santa Cruz from the Sahara. The only change Rubén Baraja introduced to the starting XI was to stick with Moore for Suso, who started on the bench. The match began in the best possible way for the blanquiazul, who, from the off, looked lively. Joselu had an early chance, one-on-one with Edgar Badía in the Elche goal, and looked as though he couldn’t

header, back across goal from a corner. He was also one-on-one with Badía, but, unlike Joselu, Gomez smashed it home to give Tenerife the lead. The referee had to refer the goal to VAR as Elche were claiming offside when their backfour pushed forward. But Josan had played Dani onside and the goal stood. In an action-packed first half, there were chances at both ends. Elche tried to hit straight back with a good passage of play, but the final shot hit the side-netting. They then had to defend in numbers when Alex Muñoz looked for Joselu at the far post, only for the visitors to scrambled the ball away. VAR was called on again in the 24th minute when Moore conceded an alleged penalty, but the video referee dismissed the claim, as Pere Milla had fouled him when they went for the same ball. Just a minute later, it looked as though CDT were certain to double their lead when Nahuel had an easy header on goal, but Badia got to it, and, with an outstretched hand, managed to push it wide. From then on, the game lost a bit of its fluidity, and both teams seemed to slow down. The second half started with the same bland rhythm as the end of the first. A foul in the midfield and another of Alberto, made the resumption disjointed and a bit slow. But Tenerife gradually increased their intensity, while Elche had a hard time leaving their half. After a good move on the right between Moore and Luis Pérez, the latter put a pass through to Joselu, who had made a great run into the heart of the area. Again, he found himself facing Badia, who stood tall and got the better of Joselu, keeping it at 1-0. At
this stage, Joselu should have had two goals, and Tenerife would have been 3-0 up. Elche coach Pacheta did not like the way the game was progressing and made a double change, bringing on Jonathas and I. Sánchez. He had already made a forced change in the first half because of an injury, whereas Tenerife had all three changes still intact. The arrival of the Elche substitutes increased the danger because Nino had hardly touched the ball. Jonathas had an excellent chance in the 64th minute when he fired a superb shot at Ortolá’s goal. But the CDT keeper got to it and the ball went out. Baraja realised the danger of an Elche side growing in confidence, so he brought on Javi Muñoz in place of Joselu to firm up the defence. Shortly after, in the 80th minute, he also brought on Álex Bermejo for his first appearance since picking up an injury over Christmas. Immediately, the substitute almost had a chance to seal it for the home team. Unfortunately, keeper Badia, Elche’s manof-the-match, again saved his team from going further behind, with yet another good save. This lifted Elche, going into the last 10 minutes, and they pushed for an equaliser, bottling-up Tenerife in their area. However, the home side remained composed, and avoided any threat to Ortolá’s goal, achieving a brilliant win at the final whistle, as well as four points from six in their two back-toback home games. As the skies grew more orange because of the calima, and fans headed off to the Carnival, Baraja had time to reflect on the fact that they are now unbeaten in six league games, and are, slowly but surely, moving in the right direction.

Emerald so unlucky! IT’S Week 25 and I’ll kick off, impartially, with my own team, Emerald B, who got off to an unlucky start against Pas O Nadas A.
Emerald B v Pas O Nadas Emerald lost the first nine legs, but Captain Jackie put Daddy Cool under immense pressure, taking one leg, and, thus, losing 3-1. The lack of a fifth player was a deciding factor, as it went 6-0. But in the second doubles game, I knocked in an excellent double 14, only to be undone by a lucky 120, Shanghai finish, from Daddy Cool. The overall verdict was that we were robbed, and the 8-0 result was unfair. But we took two legs, and could easily have won the match with that fifth player. The Pub v Sandys Bandits I can only tell you that Grizzly hit a 99 finish, The Pub won 7-1, and they had a great night. Pas O Nadas Int v Scooters&Chevys A The home team won the first three matches, and then Alec took one leg, to reduce his deficit to 3-1. The remaining showdowns went to their opponents, who secured an 8-0 success. Suters v Gaffers#TeamHollywood Jo’s post on Facebook tells the story: “Suters 4 Gaffers 4. Great match and some excellent darts thrown. 180s for Tomo and Steve. Trebles to Suters. Draw, a fair result. Tks to Suters for food and a
cracking darts night.” Mad Hatters v Loch Inn Bullseyes The Loch Inn were AWOL, so Mad Hatters, who had a walkover, played a round robin among themselves. But I don’t even know who won that! Ourplace Playboys v Waterfall Waterfall went 4-0 down, before Terry took his game 3-0, but that was all the visitors managed, until the trebles, making it 6-2 to the Playboys. Nathan hit another 180. Clouseau’s v The Club House, The absence of Clouseau’s meant their visitors were awarded an 8-0 win. Picasso’s v Pink Elephant We have Lynn’s view on this one: “Picasso’s 3 Pink Elephant 5, Pink Elephant took the Trebles. Great night with good people. I think Per enjoyed it the most, being back with his old team and cheering them on. Well done to Andy, who played a cracking game, scoring a 180, then going on to win the game 2-0. It was good to see Chas enjoying his captain’s roll (not), lol, but you did a great job Chas. Thank you, x.” Ourplace Breakaways v Sundowners Call me lazy, but we have

Fudder’s words, so why should I bother? “Breakaways 2 Sundowners 6, Trebles to Sundowners. Great night and some good games, but a fair few doubles missed. Thanks to Kim and her team for a great night. Thanks for a lovely Stew to Shar.” Scooters&Chevys B v Naughty Nautas Can’t tell you much about this one, so I’ll continue the theme, and here are Sue’s words: “Naughty Nauta 2 Scooters n Chevys 6. Nautas took the trebles. Thanks Neil for a good night, and thanks for the food.” Club Activo v Palms Sports Bar We can’t have a write-up without Graham’s quote: Activo v Palms SB, result 8-0 to Activo! Third time we have played each other in 4 weeks! Complicated, but that’s life! Great group of lads, and we enjoy the games! Thank you!” Pas O Nadas v Ourplace Playgirls Mo described this one: “PON 4-4 Playgirls, very close games. Playgirls were 3-2 down after the singles, but pulled back for the draw. Well done everyone. Playgirls took the trebles, well done Sam getting that Double 1. Thanks to Sheena and the team for a great night and the lovely food.” Marilyns v Emerald Lounge Lorna wrote: “Marilyns 4 Emerald Lounge 4. Trebles to Marilyns. Fabulous night, could have gone either way. I’ve won my 3nd game of the season. whoop whoop, lol. Some very close games. Thank you for a lovely evening.”

Wealthy football agent accused of tax evasion
A CRIMINAL investigation has been launched into one of the world’s most powerful football agents. The Spanish National Court has begun probing Fali Ramadani, for participating in an alleged money-laundering scheme in Mallorca. Ramadani, originally from Albania, lives in a luxury mansion on the island in Calvia, and represents a number of footballers through his Berlin-based Lian Sports. These include Real Madrid’s Luka Jovic, Juventus star Miralem Pjanic and Napoli’s Kalidou Kouliba. Ramadani is estimated to own the world’s fifthmost-valuable football agency, said to have accumulated €49m in agent fees, as well as negotiating contracts, worth a total of €500m. He is accused of tax evasion and moneylaundering, in a case stretching across Europe. Last week, Europol agents and Guardia Civil officers raided the multi-millionaire’s home and office, in a search lasting more than six hours. They confiscated economic information and documentation. Various business owners, ex-footballers, and the leaders of every club that Ramadani has worked with, are now, reportedly, being questioned in connection with the case. This includes individuals from east Asian countries, who are alleged to have conducted business with well-known companies in Mallorca, in addition to a former international goalkeeper, living in Calvia, according to local sources. Maheta Molango, the recently sacked CEO of Real Mallorca, has also been questioned in connection with tax-fraud allegations against Ramadani. The Swiss executive, held for several hours at the Guardia Civil headquarters in Son Moix, is reported to have handed investigators documentation and contracts concerning a number of players at the club. He is believed to have told officers that all operations between Ramadani and the Balearic SAD were legal, with Director Carlos Sureda acting as a liaison. In an investigation headed by the Central Operating unit (UCO), Ramadani is now set to face charges at Madrid’s National Court, with sources indicating that a ruling could freeze all his assets.
