Latvian carried Modern cars: ITV changes drugs inside four to be announced this May sealed tin cans Continued from Front
A 36-YEAR-OLD Latvian man was arrested by National Police at Tenerife South Airport, after discovering he was carrying heroin and ecstasy pills. Officers confiscated 1.8kg of heroin (around 15,000 doses) and 0.6kg of MDMA, recognised mainly as ecstasy. The man arrived in Tenerife on a flight from his country, after flying via another Schengen area, and he was stopped and searched by officers after setting foot outside the airport building. The drugs were found hidden inside four sealed cans, disguised as food, and the
Latvian was escorted back to the building, to be identified. His luggage was also searched, and officers found four cans of food, hidden among his belongings. They became suspicious and opened the cans to see what was inside. They came across packages inside the cans, and, once tested, they proved to be heroin and MDMA. The successful arrest came via information obtained by the airport’s National Police, as well as from other important, detecting devices around the building. The arrested man, together with the drugs, and a police report, are waiting to be presented to the judicial authorities.
Cabildo President’s €3m to fire-fighters
TENERIFE Cabildo President Pedro Martín has pledged that new fire-fighting equipment will be made available for the island’s brave bomberos. He says the cost of their equipment and vehicles this year will be around €3m. The Cabildo chief made this declaration as he delivered three personnel and cargo vehicles, as well as rescue material to aid work in Las Cañadas del Teide.
From 20th May this year, any cars older than two years, since these need to go through their ITV inspection if they have ever been used as a hire car, will need their complete technical data passed on by the manufacturer. The test will pay more attention to the electronics in the vehicle. And ITV inspection centres, which are state-run, must have the necessary new equipment to do so. These will allow them to enter the computer systems in new cars, and check information relating to emissions, ABS braking, assisted steering and airbags. The changes have been instigated by the European Union, which aims to streamline testing methods and requirements across the 27 member states. More amendments are on the cards, which include being able to switch to a different test centre within the month after a fail; to carry out the test up to a month before the expiry day; to upgraded training for mechanics carrying out the inspections. ITV tests do not have a set date, but, instead, are
required to be carried out within a given month. Stickers must be displayed on the windscreen, which show the year the ITV expires, and the months along the top of the sticker will have one punched out. For example, we are now in February, and the owner will be required to have passed the test before the end of this month, but can do so on any date of that month. Sometimes, when a vehicle passes its ITV, the examiner will refer on the report sheet to “minor faults”, which are not serious enough to warrant a fail. But they will need to be corrected before the next ITV approaches. Drivers are normally inside their cars when they are tested, and are given instructions, such as to stand on the brake, put the gearstick in reverse, and switch on lights or indicators. And all mechanical functions are checked. Although verifying liquid levels is not part of the test, per se, an examiner may well flag a car-owner, if he or she is low on oil or brake fluid. An ITV should not replace maintenance checks or a service, but for older cars, required to go through an annual ITV, the owner will
usually come away from the testing centre with a good idea of what he/she needs to do. Fan belts and cam belts should, typically, be checked, and, if necessary, changed every 60,000km. And it is worth checking the oil levels every month, although 21st-century registered cars, on average, need their oil verified every 15,000km. It is usually advisable to change the oil completely, and probably the filter, every 15,000km, or, in older cars, every year, even if the distance travelled has been less. Air filters, brakes, brake shoes and brake fluid should be checked at around the same frequency, and the latter, three months, especially during the winter. Windscreen wipers should be examined after every summer, since the extreme heat in Spain at this time can cause the rubber to dry out and crack. Tyres are the most common cause of ITV failures, and it is worth checking these at least annually. And do remember that the same brand of tyre must be used for each pair, front and back, and the treads should be approximately enough to insert a euro coin in them.
Restaurant man takes beating for his takings A MAN aged 58 was struck in the face with a metal pole in Adeje last Friday night, and robbed of €10,000.
The incident happened at around 11pm, near the El Galleon, on Avenida de los Pueblos, around the Terrazas area. The restaurant manager was obviously attacked for the money he carried. He was responsible for taking it home, discreetly, so that he could bank it the following week, According to sources, the victim had all the takings from the business, which had accumulated over the previous few days. He suffered a violent attack, leaving him in a critical condition after he was hit around the head, continually, with a blunt object. To date, the victim is still
recovering in Hospiten Sur’s intensive-care unit, after receiving dangerous injuries, resulting in an open head wound above an eye, for which he received more than 10 stitches. He also had other significant blows to his head, causing a considerable loss of blood. The man has managed the restaurant for many years, and his assailant is thought to have been watching his movements for some time, collecting information. A person in the area raised
the alarm by calling the emergency services, just minutes after the attack occurred. Guardia Civil officers, along with those from the Las Americas National Police, have been investigating thoroughly, and are looking for the attacker, who has in his possession around €10,000. Officers, who are asking for witnesses to come forward, are also recovering the video surveillance of the area, where the violence took place.

PEOPLE’S Party Councillor Manuel Fernández has described the sale of Tenerife’s three casinos as “a legal and moral obligation”. He also maintained that his party would continue to back the privatisation of the three venues, despite the failure of the most recent tender. It means that the privatisation of Tenerife’s three publiclyowned casinos looks increasingly unlikely to go ahead, as the island’s politicians point fingers about who is to blame. Regional Finance Minister Berta Pérez last September declared void the tender for Casino Playa de las Americas, Casino Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Casino Puerto de la Cruz. She said the complexity of the specifications, drafted by the previous Cabildo, was responsible for the failure of the process. Pérez added that it was “very difficult” for a bidder to fulfil the criteria, set out by the Cabildo’s finance department. The Cabildo is, reportedly, in the process of analysing whether to continue with the casinos’ privatisation.
Angry trainer deals body blow to her teacher’s car
OFFICERS from the National Police detained a 25-year -old woman from San Bartolome de Tirajana, charging her with damaging a teacher’s car. The woman, who already had a police record, had been suspended from her job for not complying with the rules of her training course. She was so angry that she took out her frustration on the teacher’s vehicle, causing damage which cost €1,060 to repair. The crime was reported after the course teacher returned to the vehicle, which was parked up at Gran Canaria’s Town Hall’s car park, in San Bartomole de Tirajana. The teacher noticed numerous scratch marks on its doors, along with several bodywork dents, as well as damage to the wing mirror. The police interviewed several people, and most reported a woman, who had been recently suspended from the course, as well as her job, for not following specific rules. They also told the police that they had witnessed a woman in the vicinity who fitted the description, saying she might have caused the damage. Once officers took statements from the witnesses, and the woman was arrested and charged with criminal damage. She was taken to the Mas Palomas police station for questioning.

Cabildo’s casinos likely to be left in public ownership
Councillor Fernández, Secretary General of the local branch of the People’s Party (PP), characterised the sale of the casinos as both “a legal and moral obligation” for Tenerife Cabildo, given
its standing commitment to public-sector divestment. Former Cabildo President Carlos Alonso Rodríguez was chief architect of the sale, which marked the culmination of its Plan
for the Restructuring and Streamlining of the Public Enterprise Sector, first approved in March 2012. However, a contentious change in the Cabildo last July saw the Spanish Socialist
14th February - 20th February 2020 Workers’ Party (PSOE), under Pedro Martín Manuel Domínguez, take power and put the sale plans under renewed scrutiny. Following the decision to declare the tender void, the regionalist Canarian Coalition (CC) accused the PSOE-led Cabildo of using a “clause in the tender terms”, which requires multiple bidders to move ahead with the privatisation, as a pretext to abandon the process. Manuel Fernández said: “What’s changed since the election is that Podemos is now propping up the island’s government and is strongly opposed to the sale.” A previous proposal to privatise Tenerife’s casinos was unveiled in May 2013, while Alonso was serving as Tourism Minister. While the Cabildo moved forward with these plans in 2014, holding a licence tender for Casino Playa de Las Americas, the property failed to attract any bidders. And, similarly, the sale met with strong resistance from opposition politicians and union officials. Manuel Fernández said he hoped the Cabildo would have the “political valour” to resume the privatisation process, a decision, he confirmed, which would be supported by the PP.
Fred. Olsen’s ships are on Hospitals crowded with the way, at Express speed! hundreds of flu victims
FRED. Olsen Express has announced that the first of its two highspeed trimarans was afloat last week for the first time, at the Austal shipyard in Henderson, Australia. The launch of this new, fast ferry, which will sail under the name of Bajamar Express, took place last Tuesday, and is now into its final phase before being delivered. That is expected in the second quarter of the year, which means it will be surely sailing in the Canary Islands this summer. The company’s highspeed ships are being
built, following the latest innovations, and they are expected to offer “a high standard of comfort”, thanks to the ship’s new design, and the incorporation of leading navigation control technology, especially in its new Gold Class. The Bajamar Express is likely to be incorporated into the route the company operates between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. And Fred. Olsen Express is now having another trimaran built, called the Bañaderos Express, whose delivery is expected later this year. Both this and the Bajarmar will be able to transport more than 1,100 passengers, along with 276 cars. It is also hoped that speeds of up to 38 knots will be achieved.
AN increase of respiratory problems across the Canary Islands is causing concern, and hospitals’ emergency departments are virually overflowing. That has occurred over the last few weeks, particularly, because of the regular bouts of flu and the calimas. Professionals working at Candelaria Hospital’s emergency department are seeing more than 250 patients a day, yet on an average day no more than 220 walk through the doors. According to a spokesperson from the hospital, it is normal for this time of year to have an increase of patients passing through the emergency doors… not only in the Canary Islands, but also throughout Spain. The volume of patients means the hospital has had to in-
crease the number of beds in the emergency department by 12. It now has 104 beds for admissions and 32 for hospital transits. However, there hasn’t just been an increase of beds, because there are also more nursing staff to meet the patients’ demands. More staff are also working at the department of microbiology, to speed up the diagnosing process. Last week, the archipelago endured yet another calima, with three days of intense heat, which is when a rise in flu incidents were reported. Some 240 individuals per 100,000 inhabitants were diagnosed, and already this year there have been 13 deaths across the archipelago from influenza: eight were male and five female. From the tragic death total, nine were over 65, and the other four were aged between 15 and 64 years.

The Oscars bag La Palma
EVEN if they failed to capture a statue at the Dolby Theatre’s Academy Awards, in Los Angeles, all 24 nominees for the top individual categories will still have received a special prize of their own.
This year’s “Everyone Wins” nominee gift bag, from marketing company Distinctive Assets, is valued at $225,000, according to Forbes, and includes exclusive trips, hotel stays and cosmetic treatments. And, would you believe it, La Palma’s lighthouse, which still operates, has been offered as a gift. The true cost would
be around $1,700 a night. The goodie-bag recipient, and seven additional guests, will be able to stay at the Faro Cumplida lighthouse, on the northern tip of the Canary Island. The active lighthouse is 34 metres high (112ft) and even has an infinity pool. A typical stay at this unusual, de-luxe spot costs around €1, 550 a night.

Driver’s sugar levels not so sweet for a motorway
THE Canarian emergency services rescued a driver on the TF-5 on Monday morning, after he became unconscious, causing the traffic to come to a standstill. The incident happened in the Victoria area, heading towards Santa Cruz, during
last Monday’s rush-hour. The ambulance team arrived and assessed the man, and it became apparent that he had lost consciousness because his sugar levels had dropped. However, the medical team stabilised him, and the Guardia Civil were there to re-establish the traffic flow. The Traffic department’s Guardia Civil branch is now asking drivers to be more vigilant when on the roads.

Smart Guardia trap thieving youngsters THREE delinquents, aged 17, 20 and 21, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil and charged with committing at least 16 house robberies in the La Laguna area. The arrests were made possible through an operation named Celeste 1TF, carried out by La Orotava and La Victoria authorities. The investigations began at the beginning of November 2019, after several house burglaries had been reported. The authorities were most concerned because the robberies occurred in the areas of La Victoria, El Rosario, Tacoronte, Santa Ursula and La Matanza. Thanks to the Celeste operation, as well as the public’s collaboration, the officers collected sufficient evidence to identify the individuals and arrest them. Their investigations enabled officers to see how the trio worked on planning their robberies. They were observed watching several properties, and studying the movements of the people living in the properties. And when a house was empty, they took their chances and gained entry. They would enter into the property by breaking the locks on the main front door. Once
inside, they ransacked the home in search of valuable items. The group would normally carry out their illegal actions in the morning. But they also broke into a few properties in the evening, because they knew they would be empty. Once the individuals were in police custody, the Guardia Civil searched their properties, and officers came across several pieces of jewellery, mobile phones and video consoles, along with various accessories. They also found computers, weapons, and a “pretend” gun, as well as an air rifle. In one property, officers also found 11 pieces of hashish, weighing 275gms. And in another home, there were 1,169gms of hashish, along with six grams of cocaine. Consequently, two of the three arrested have also been charged with drug-dealing.
AN Italian woman, aged 65, was injured and needed rescuing, after a fall while walking on Montana Amarillo (Yellow Mountain) in Costa de Silencio on Tuesday afternoon. The Canarian emergency services were alerted, and a fire-fighting team, along with an ambulance, were dispatched to the area. Upon arrival, the fire-fighters soon located the woman, and rescued her from the precarious location in which
she had fallen. It is thought that she had lost her footing because the ground was uneven. The fire-fighters transferred her to the nearby ambulance, so the medical team could assess her injuries. They confirmed that the pensioner had suffered a leg injury, and took her to Hospiten Sur for further treatment. The Local Police were also at the scene to assist in the emergency.

Spanish passport rated fifth-most valuable in world
A SPANISH passport is the fifth-most “useful” in the world, according to official figures about where citizens can travel to, and how. The Henley Passport Index, drawn up by London-based consultation firm Henley & Partners, uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and found that the most valuable passport anyone can hold is a Japanese one, since this allows nationals to travel to 191 countries without needing a visa. A Singaporean passport is the next-best thing, as its holders can travel to 190 countries without a visa, and the German or South Korean passports are joint third, permitting visafree entry to 189 countries. Finland and Italy are joint fourth, allowing visa-free travel to 188 countries, while Spain comes fifth, along with Luxembourg and Denmark, all of whose passports let their holders get into 187 countries without a visa. But a Spanish passport beats a French or Swedish one, which allows for visa-free travel to 186 countries. Joint-seventh, permitting the holder to get into 185 countries without a visa, are passports held by citizens of Austria, Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, and Switzerland. Although the figures have only just been released, they are based upon the value of international passports as at 7th January, when the UK had not yet left the European Union, although this was on the cards at the time. But on that date, and still the
28th member State, a passport from Britain was joint-eighth along with Belgium, Greece, Norway and the US, and its holders could get into 184 countries without a visa. With 183 visitable countries, Australia, Canada, the Czech Republic, Malta and New Zealand came next, and the top 10 was completed by Hungary, Lithuania and Slovakia, whose passports permit travel to 181 countries without a visa. The lowest-ranked EU passport was from Croatia, giving entry to 169 countries, just below Bulgaria (171) and Romania (172) and just above San Marino (168) and Andorra (167). For continental Europe, not counting the former Soviet States, and Kosovo, the lowest-ranking were Turkey (111 countries), Albania (114), Bosnia-Herzegovina (117), North Macedonia (123), Montenegro (125), Serbia (133, along with El Salvador and Hondurás), and Vatican City (146, together with Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago). A Kosovo passport allows the holder into 40 countries, the same as Lebanon, which is fewer than practically the whole of Africa, except Sudan and Somalia. As for the former Soviet nations, a passport from Turkmenistan gets the holder into 52 coun-
tries; from Uzbekistan, 57 countries; Tajikistan, 58; Armenia, 62; Kyrgyzstan, 63; Azerbaijan, 67; Kazakhstan, 76; Georgia, 116; Moldova, 120; Ukraine, 128 – along with Nicaragua; and Russia itself, joining Micronesia with 118 countries. The poorest-ranking passports in the world, below Kosovo and with fewer than 40 countries available to travel to without a visa, are North Korea and Sudan (39), Nepal and Palestine (38), Libya (37), Yemen (33), Pakistan and Somalia (32), Syria (29), Iraq (28). And the least-valuable passport of all is those of Afghanistan, whose citizens can enter just 26 countries without needing a visa. The passport soaring highest in the ranking over the last decade is that of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has gone up 47 places to No.18, which is level with Bulgaria, on 171 countries. A Spanish passport is, therefore, the fourth-most valuable in Europe, together with Luxembourg and Denmark, while a British passport is the 14th-most valuable, jointly with Belgium, Greece and Norway. Spain was also the fifth-most useful passport in the world last year, although it then allowed entry without a visa into 186 countries, rather than 187.

Tenerife is no longer the ‘Isle of Fernando’ THE Isle of Fernando, better known as Tenerife, has been host to television’s Take Me Out for 11 series, over a 10-year period. But it has now been axed by ITV. The dating show, hosted by Paddy McGuinness, was launched in January 2010, and, after 11 series, the final episode appeared in December 2019. Comedian McGuinness, 46,
has not commented on the show’s demise, but he has been kept busy as a copresenter of Top Gear, the BBC’s car show. Take Me Out, based on an Australian show, sees 30 women compete for a date with one man, who emerges from the “Love Lift”, tasked with winning over the ladies in a few short rounds. If they like him, they keep their light on, and, in the final round, the contestant turns off the lights of those who have left theirs on, barring one. He then takes that woman
on a date to the “island of Fernando”, and the McGuinness “No likey, no lighty” catchphrase was coined. The pilot episode had the date taking place in a bar, but, since then, couples have been sent on holiday to the “Isle of Fernando”, a fictional location in Puerto de la Cruz. A spin-off show, “The Gossip” began on ITV2 in 2012, revealing what goes on between all the couple while away on their dates. Over 110 episodes - including a celebrity special - Take Me Out has been responsible for at least seven weddings and five babies, thanks to its successful love matches. McGuinness said in 2018: “I am really proud. I met a little girl the other day whose parents were contestants, and I sat there thinking, ‘This person would not be here if mum and dad hadn’t met on the show.” It was also revealed that winners of the show were separated immediately after the match-up in the ITV
studio, and didn’t see each other again until they went on their date. Tragically, contestant Charlie Watkins took his own life in 2017, shortly after filming the show. An inquest
was told that he had lost his dream job, after taking time off to film the show. This year, ITV launched the winter series of its hit flagship dating programme Love Island.

Tough Las Vegas charity walk, to aid mental health
THE Feel Good Association charity joined forces with children’s charity Helping Hands recently to stage a fun walk in Tenerife’s own Las Vegas, guided expertly by Andy Walker, of toprated Tenerife Guided Walks.
The charities were delighted with the 50-plus turn-out, including a big group of young children, who came along to support the cause. Despite the sweltering calima, they completed the 7km hike, through stunning mountain landscape… some of them even running back down the mountain! This cultural hike takes you by cave houses, “tajeas” (water channels), and a watermill, as well as lightning-struck pine trees. The group were also fortunate to see some almond blossom. The walk also featured a team quiz to test everyone’s local knowledge of the area, and the participants were greeted with “no bull” vegan burgers, cold drinks and LasVegas-themed music in the recreational area. A big thanks to Kris Richard for sorting out the Elvis tracks! There was even a handmade photo booth with an Elvis costume, to ensure some fun memories of the day. And another thank-you to Gabriella Young and Leslie ‘Elvis’ Moore for making this possible. The event was followed up with a brilliant afternoon at The Garage, with a raffle
and live music from the fabulous Alabama Band from Oklahoma, who were absolutely fantastic! A joint statement from The Feel Good Association and Helping Hands said: “We would like to thank everyone who took part, donated, sponsored and gave up their free time to help out. Thank you so much to all our friends who came along to show their support. “Big thanks to Tracey and Val, for entertaining the children, and their organisation of such a super day at The Garage… what a fabulous venue! “Thanks to our helpers, Ann, Margaret, Linda, who raised €440 by selling raffle tickets, and the wonderful youngsters who sold T-shirts, bags and books... Luca, Gabby, Charlin, Sarah, Joe & Francis. “A special thank-you certificate was presented to young Kimberley Wall for raising more than €210, all by herself on the sponsored walk. “Also, thanks to the amazing, always full of beans and smiles, unwaveringly-generous Elizabeth Montague, truly a force to be reckoned with, whose Helping Hands char-
ity made a kind donation of €2,500.” Altogether, the grand total from the Charity Hike, the Helping Hands donation and proceeds from the post-event, added up to a staggering €3,972.16 for the Feel Good Association’s first fund-raiser. This is a Tenerife mentalhealth charity, which supports people suffering from mental-health problems. as well as striving to reduce the stigma surrounding them. They have a “building dreams” project, which aims to improve the lives of people with mental-health issues by providing them with a paid internship, where they learn useful new skills, and also feel part of something. Contaminated oregano being recalled by Lidl BUDGET supermarket chain Lidl is recalling thousands of jars of oregano, contaminated potentially with toxins that could cause liver disease.
Staff in Spain and the UK have cleared the shelves of the affected batch, with the supermarket chain urging customers to return the dried herbs for a refund. The jars involved are: 7.5gm Kania brand, with a bestbefore date of 07/2022, and marked with batch numbers LA91832, and LC91834. And the supplier is Weiand GmbH. A Lidl statement read: “Internal controls have
detected a high value of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. “The alkaloids are plant components from unwanted plants, growing alongside the crops, and they have not been separated properly during harvesting. “They can cause liver damage if ingested over a long period. And, therefore, we ask customers to return the product and not to consume it.” The batches have already been withdrawn, and Lidl asks customers to keep them sealed at home, and return them. They will be refunded, and it will not be necessary to show a receipt. The chain said other Kania products were not affected by the recall, and apologised to affected customers.
No fires, but bomberos rescued two pensioners
FIRE-FIGHTERS from Santa Cruz had to attend two weekend call-outs, of a similar nature, in the Tenerife capital. On both occasions, they were asked to rescue elderly people, after both were discovered by family members on the floor of their home, having fallen. The first call, received by the Canarian emergency service on Friday evening, was made by a family member, who wanted help in opening the front door to get into his
aunt’s home. Fortunately, she was unharmed. The second call was made on Sunday afternoon, via the Local Police, who asked for help after it was reported that an elderly man had fallen on the kitchen floor. The only way the authorities could gain entry was via the balcony, but to reach it they had to climb on the roof. And that’s where the fire officers were needed. Fortunately, the elderly man was rescued and taken to an ambulance, waiting close by to take him to a nearby medical centre for observation.

Tragic boat migrants fail to make El Hierro
TWO migrants from a patera, in which 20 people were travelling, died on their way to El Hierro. A man died on board the boat, while a woman, who had been critically ill, passed away in hospital. The evacuation began early last Sunday, via by a helicopter of the Rescue Air Service (SAR), but seven other immigrants were also in poor health. They were evacuated by air, suffering hypothermia and dehydration, and though two were diagnosed as being “moderate” and five “mild”, they were all admitted to
El Hierro’s Hospital Nuestra Señora de los Reyes. Of the original 20 boat occupants, there were five women and 14 men, as well as the man who had passed away, say the Guardia Civil. The 11 travellers who were not evacuated remained on board the Unisea ship, which rescued them about 500km south of El Hierro. The ship was continuing its route to Gran Canaria’s La Palma port, where it was scheduled to arrive a day or two later. Most of the immigrants were believed to have come from Guinea capital Conakry, and there were also people from Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Kenya, according to Guardia Civil sources.
Butter-fingered worker stumbled across drugs
A CLUMSY worker, who dropped a box of A4 paper that actually contained cocaine, led police to uncover nearly 1.5 tonnes of the drug. The unsuspecting office clerk called in police when the narcotics spilled out! Catalan police searched the Barcelona company’s storeroom to find that 800 boxes, supposedly containing A4 paper, actually held cocaine, totalling 1,413kg, which had been sent, originally, from Brazil. Two people were arrested in
Spain, and the investigation revealed that 10 people had been smuggling drugs from Brazil as part of a criminal organisation. To launder the money gained from their drug-trafficking, the suspects created an entire business structure with various companies, including real-estate investments and Barcelona fashion stores. Another way to launder the money was to use people (mulas), who, periodically, made small cash deposits at several bank branches. The initial discovery was made in 2018, but the probe was completed at the start of this month.
Regional Catalan police carried out 13 simultaneous, house-and-company searches to dismantle the smuggling gang, and, together with the Policia Nacional, carried out one house search on the Balearic Island of Menorca. The Central Narcotics Unit and the Central Money Laundering Unit of the regional Catalan police (Mossos D’esquadra), assisted by Europol, arrested 14 people, with 10 remanded in custody. They are suspected of trafficking cocaine and moneylaundering, as well as membership of a criminal organisation.

CBAS - A proud reputation spanning over four decades CANARIES and British Aluminium Systems (CBAS) was founded in the early 1990s and was originally known as Cristaleria y Aluminio Santiago.
What started out as a small business selling glass and mirrors, gradually developed and moved into the aluminium market. The fabrication of patio doors and windows soon followed and by 1998 the company, needing more space, moved into larger building in the town of Puerto Santiago. In 2001 the business changed ownership and with this change came rapid expansion. This growth meant that the company needed to find more suitable premises so by 2003 it had relocated to a brand new 600m² factory on the Las Chafiras industrial estate. At this time a decision was made to change the company name to Canaries & British Aluminium Systems S.L. and significant investment
was made to acquire new machinery, tools, workstations and a fleet of vehicles to ensure continued success and development. By 2012 the business owner was approaching retirement and began a search to find a suitable person to take over the reins. After several months the ideal candidate - Mark Fidgeon - was found. Mark arrived in Tenerife in 2003 and had already
set up his own successful construction company by the time he became involved with CBAS. With over 30 years’ experience in the building industry under his belt - working as a Construction Director for such companies as Taylor Woodrow and Barratt Homes - Mark was ready to take on an exciting new challenge. Mark merged his own construction company with
CBAS and was able to offer the public a multitude of innovative products and services on a much grander scale than before. The company continues to thrive and expand and enjoys an unrivalled reputation within the building industry. CBAS is now one of the biggest and most successful aluminium
and construction companies on the island of Tenerife. CBAS is a “one-stop-solution” for construction, aluminium, parts and repair work. This complete service means that the customer can have total confidence in what they are purchasing - from a bath tap, window or door to a full refurbishment or new build no job is too big or too small. The team at CBAS provides free, no obligation quotes and consultations for whatever job is required and they offer an unrivalled personal service from start to finish and beyond. All work is carried out in a professional manner, including application for planning permission and licences - processes that can be quite a minefield here in Tenerife and certainly not something to fall foul of. Visit their website at www. cbas.eu or look them up on Facebook and Instagram where you will find more information and photographs regarding the products and services they provide and, of course, recommendations from many of their satisfied customers.

Pound slumps to fresh lows, after UK leaves EU
surrounding the economic impact of the outbreak of Wuhan coronavirus plagued traders. What do you need to look out for? The spotlight will remain on UK-EU trade negotiations, as the two sides head back to
the negotiating table. EUR investors will be looking closely at upcoming data from the bloc’s largest economy, as weak German flash GDP could signal the worst is not over. Over the next few weeks, the dollar may edge higher, if upbeat retail-sales data shows the American consumer remains optimistic, and PMI measures continue to impress in February. Studies have shown that outbreaks in the past have tended to follow something called the 20:80 rule, which means that around 20% of infected people contribute to around 80% of the disease’s spread. Scientists believe tracking down superspreaders can be crucial to keeping an outbreak under control, and preventing it from becoming a pandemic. It is not yet known why people are more adept at
spreading a disease, but theories suggest that some patients might “shed” more of the virus into the atmosphere when they sneeze or cough or sweat, because of how their immune system works. Patterns of behaviour may also lead to someone being dubbed a superspreader. In other words, much like Walsh, who travels around the world, conducting business and meeting lots of people, where he could spread a virus rapidly.

Latest currency news THE pound has been on a downtrend, for the last couple of weeks, with markets focused on trade negotiations between the UK and the European Union, following the UK’s exit, on 31st January. This has seen GBP/EUR plummet from 1.19 to 1.17, and EUR/GBP edge to 0.85. Meanwhile, GBP/USD fell from 1.32 to 1.28, and EUR/USD slipped from 1.10 to 1.09. What’s been happening? Before the end of January, the pound briefly rallied against the euro and US dollar, after the Bank of England (BoE) left interest rates on hold. However, sterling has since given up these gains, with the pound sliding to a two-anda-half month low against the US dollar, thanks to growing fears that the UK and EU will be unable to reach a trade deal, before the end of the transition
period. PM Boris Johnson has, so far, adopted a hard-line stance in trade discussions, and appears committed to the transition period ending in December 2020. GBP/EUR losses have not been as severe as those of GBP/USD, however, with
the euro weakened after recent data suggested the German manufacturing slump may have continued, after a temporary pick-up in November. The US dollar was able to gain some support from rising safehaven demand, as worries
Businessman is now known as superspreader BRITISH businessman Steve Walsh (pictured) has been dubbed a “superspreader” of the coronavirus, now renamed COVID-19, after unknowingly infecting 11 people. Thankfully, the 53-year-old has now fully recovered, after being diagnosed in Brighton on 6th February. The scout leader, who picked up the infection during a Singapore business conference in the middle of January, was representing gas company Servomex, with whom he is a senior executive. The event was being held at the exclusive Grand Hyatt hotel, which had welcomed vendors from across China and Wuhan, the outbreak’s epicentre. At least four others were infected at that conference. But Walsh, unaware he was carrying the virus, then travelled to the French Alps for a skiing holiday on the last weekend of January. He stayed at the Les Contamines-Montjoie resort,
where he met and, unknowingly, passed on the virus to the British expat living in Marratxi, Mallorca. Walsh actually infected five people who are now in the UK, five who are in France, and the British man, who is in Mallorca. Steve Walsh admitted the worrying problem as soon as he realised he had been in contact with a COVID-19 sufferer. Investigations being carried out include tracking down all passengers on the GenevaLondon and Geneva-Barcelona-Palma flights. In a statement from St Thomas’ hospital in London, where
he is in quarantine, Walsh said: “I would like to thank the NHS for their help and care. While I have fully recovered, my thoughts are with others who have contracted the virus. “As soon as I knew I had been exposed to a confirmed case, I contacted my GP, NHS 111 and Public Health England. “I was advised to attend an isolated room at hospital, despite showing no symptoms, and, subsequently, self-isolated at home, as instructed. “When the diagnosis was confirmed, I was sent to an isolation unit in hospital, where I remain, and, as a precaution, my family were also asked to isolate themselves. “I also thank friends, family and colleagues for their support during recent weeks.” Incidentally, a superspreader is someone who is much more capable of infecting others with a virus or disease than the average person.
Mobile World Congress is cancelled over virus fears
BARCELONA’S Mobile World Congress is set to be cancelled because of coronavirus fears, says organiser GSMA. The company was left with little choice after Amazon, Sony and a slew of other big names, dropped out of the world’s biggest mobile phone showcase. The Bloomberg News wrote: “GSMA chief John Hoffman believed the coronavirus outbreak had made it impossible to put on the event, scheduled to take place in Barcelona on 24th February. “He said in an email: ‘With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona, and the host country, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern
regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event.’” More than 1,000 people have been killed by the virus, officially named COVID-19, with some 42,000 infected. It has spread to at least 25 countries, including the UK and Spain. The MWC was set to play host to a large number of Chinese companies, who would have flown in for the event, but it has raised health concerns. Sony, Amazon, LG, Intel, Vivo and others all announced that they would not be attending. Yet it is reported that the event has an economic impact of €492m, generating 14,100 part-time jobs.

Confronting Holocaust Denial with David Baddiel The Holocaust is one of the most documented, witnessed and written about events in history, so why is Holocaust denial back on the political agenda? What has happened in the 75 years since the liberation of the camps to have so skewed the picture? And, if it matters, why does it matter? In this timely and important film, David investigates the history and modern face of Holocaust denial. He talks to academics and historians to trace how denial has evolved since the end of the Second World War and try to discover how and why people are still denying the Holocaust today. Over the course of the film David encounters people who cause him to question deep-rooted opinions, others who lend extra weight to beliefs he’s grown up with from childhood and some he really would rather not meet at all. He broaches taboos and finds himself in often uncomfortable situations. At the heart of the film are his attempts to answer some fundamental questions: why does a desire to deny the events of the Holocaust even exist? Why is it growing? What does it tell us about anti-Semitism? Is there a version of Holocaust Denial that is becoming respectable? And how can we best counter these ideas? Finally he emerges with a new perspective on an issue that goes beyond the events of the Holocaust, and sheds light on a very 21st century malaise - the denial of historical fact. For many, even to explore the phenomenon of Holocaust Denial is to unlock a box marked ‘do not open’. But this film suggests that by exploring this archetype of lies, conspiracy theory and fake news, we could deepen our understanding of our post-truth world.

Girl Power and all that, well I’m the original Girl Power. For a start I was headlining and I had an all-male bill underneath me and there was nobody doing that. I was the original women’s libber. Trust me, I was.” Cilla Black, 2002 audio recording Singer, actor, presenter, icon, Cilla Black was a talent who defined British television for over four decades. In the years following her death, Cilla’s family made a startling discovery - buried in the loft of her family home was a stash of never seen before films and behind the scenes footage from Cilla’s personal video collection, along with hours of audio recording of Cilla telling her own life story. The material dates back to 1969 and covers Cilla’s early career, recording her hits, hanging out with The Beatles and falling in love with Bobby Willis. It includes a guided tour by Cilla herself of her family home in Denham and holiday trips to Fiji, Hong Kong and Australia during the construction of the Sydney Opera House. Cilla’s Lost Tapes show a pioneer who re-wrote the rules of showbusiness, providing an intimate portrait of a working-class girl who became a national treasure. Narrated by Sheridan Smith, who played Cilla in the 2014 ITV drama, this unique programme includes interviews with the family and friends who knew Cilla best, as they watch the lost footage for the first time and recall their own memories of a much-missed television icon. In the audio recordings made with her biographer in 2002, Cilla recalls her early years growing up in 1960s Liverpool: “I had a focus in my life apart from getting married and having babies. I wanted to be a star from a very, very early age. I knew from the age of three that I wanted to go into showbusiness.” After working as a teenage cloakroom girl at The Cavern live music club in Liverpool, within just three years Cilla became the star attraction at The Savoy Hotel in London after being spotted by The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein. Watching footage of Cilla on stage, Sir Cliff Richard says: “Watching her sing Big Spender, I can understand why on hearing it, Shirley Bassey might have wanted to do that song. But isn’t it fantastic that Cilla did it first? I mean I didn’t even realise that piece of film existed.” Cilla became a chart-topping phenomenon and a millionaire by the age of 25, at a time when the average working woman made just £10 a week. Cilla recalls her close relationship with Ringo Starr: “He was like a best friend, even though he did ask me to marry him, but just for a giggle. Well, he was desperate actually because all of the other Beatles had girlfriends.” She later recalls meeting her husband Bobby in 1962: “It certainly wasn’t love at first sight…but he was incredibly funny and unbelievably good looking.” In 1968 under Bobby’s management, Cilla broke the mould with a move into TV presenting, by performing and hosting her very own show, ‘Cilla’ which attracted audiences of 22 million. Friend and TV Executive Nigel Lythgoe says: “Women didn’t get their own television shows in those days, it wasn’t something that really happened.” Behind the scenes her relationship with Bobby blossomed and Cilla recalls how the night before their wedding she gate-crashed Bobby’s stag night, refusing to be left out of a do. The couple went on to have three sons together after Cilla made history by performing for Her Majesty The Queen at the Royal Variety Performance in 1970, whilst heavily pregnant. Cilla’s eldest son Robert Willis says of his parents: “We were very lucky that what they were doing was quite high profile but when they were at home they really loved a very simple, normal family life.” Cilla took several years out of the spotlight to have raise her sons, before making a primetime comeback in 1984 on ITV with Surprise Surprise, followed by Blind Date in 1985. The shows introduced Cilla to a whole new generation and their incredible success meant they ran for nearly 20 years, with Cilla becoming the highest paid woman on British TV.

Universal Credit: Inside The Welfare State
In the final episode the cameras are at Bolton Jobcentre, where over 500 people move onto Universal Credit every month. New claimant Paula (pictured) has taken advantage of an ‘advance payment’ to see her through the first five-week ‘wait’ before her first Universal Credit payment. These payments were introduced to reduce the hardship that some claimants experienced during the transition onto the new benefit. But Paula is not used to receiving this amount of money in one payment, and goes on a spending spree which leaves her struggling to survive on her monthly amount after the advance start being repaid.

The 27 year-old will be targeting Olympic success this summer, so will be eager to begin 2020 in style. Muir, meanwhile, runs in the final event of the afternoon, the women’s 1000m. The Scottish middle-distance star, who is based in Glasgow, will be roared on by the home crowd as she seeks to break the world record over this distance. Commentary is led by Steve Cram, Andrew Cotter and Steve Backley, with analysis from Denise Lewis, Colin Jackson and Paula Radcliffe.

Hannah (Nicola Walker) feels increasingly stressed by the double life she is leading with Christie (Barry Atsma) - as Nathan’s (Stephen Mangan) suspicions are raised. Hannah’s absence at home starts to affect the children, who need their parents’ attentions more than ever. At work, Hannah deals with a divorce petition for the wife of a romantic novelist, and begins to equip Fi Hansen (Donna Air) for her separation from husband Richie (Ben Bailey Smith), negotiating a complex case within the midst of a media storm. Meanwhile, Rose (Fiona Button) deals with the devastation of her miscarriage, Nina (Annabel Scholey) comes to terms with her surprise pregnancy, and Ruth (Deborah Findlay) reconnects with someone from her past.

In Aintree Hospital’s major trauma centre, a 15-strong team is trying to save the life of a young man who has just arrived by emergency helicopter. He has been stabbed in the chest - one of three stabbings to arrive during the day. It’s a race against time as he’s rushed for emergency surgery. Three and a half miles away in the heart of the city centre, The Royal Liverpool Hospital provides emergency care for ten of the most deprived areas in the UK. The Royal deals with an increasing number of ‘frequent fliers’ - patients who return multiple times and who put extra strain on the system.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 2020
Carnival is Tenerife’s most popular festival, especially in the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This year, the Carnival theme will be American lifestyles in the 1950s. For about two weeks, starting on 19 February, the streets get filled with joyous bunches of people in colourful fancy dresses. Carnival activities include the Carnival Queen Gala (19 February), the Opening Parade (21 February), the Rhythm and Harmony Krewes Contest (22 February), the Day Celebrations (23 and 29 February), the Big Carnival Parade, or Coso Apoteosis del Carnaval (25 February), the Burial of the Sardine (26 February) and the Afilarmónica NiFú-NiFá Concert and Big Fireworks Show (1 March).
As usual at this time of year, the streets of La Laguna are getting ready for one of the most important religious festivals on the island. María de León, aka Sor María de Jesús or La Siervita, was a lay sister born in El Sauzal. She died in 1731. She is associated with numerous miracles. On the occasion of the anniversary of her death, on 15 February, her incorrupt body is shown to her devotees. The festival begins with the 9th La Sierva Walk, at 8.30am. At 5pm, the Convent of Santa Catalina in La Laguna will host the Special Mass and Flower Offering, followed by the Procession of La Sierva’s Baby Jesus. At 6pm, there will be a Memorial Mass at the La Sierva de Dios House Museum on the occasion of the 289th anniversary of Sor María de Jesús’s death. Finally, on 16 February at 5pm, the Convent of Santa Catalina will host Mass and welcome the people in El Sauzal to take a look at La Sierva’s incorrupt body. 15th - 16th February El Sauzal www.elsauzal.es

Entertainment
14th February - 20th February 2020
KEDDY’S Entertainment always enjoy introducing artistes. We are delighted to feature the extremely lovely and very talented Michelle Almgill. Born in Yorkshire in 1992, she started dancing at the tender age of two! This was for Arena entertainments, a dance company based in Hull. Michelle was the youngest member of Cottingham Troupe Majorettes. Over the next five years, Michelle performed in numerous parades and competitions, winning countless medals and trophies. “I was seven years old when my family moved here to Tenerife,” she said. “Every Sunday, my sister and I would dance in a show, and we were called The Twirl girls. I began to sing, and performed, occasionally, with other artistes. This enabled me to incorporate and appreciate a whole range of different styles of music. “Being really young, and surrounded by so many artistes, gave me such insight. I was like a sponge, soaking it all up! I have been able to build myself a huge repertoire. “I began with Millie Brown’s My Boy Lollipop, and growing up I enjoyed listening to Mariah Carey, Tina Turner and Celine Dion. I am a huge fan of all divas, and I adore singing and love performing.” Michelle won the popular Tenerife Pop Idol contest, at the age of 11, and was the youngest contestant. The contest was organised and run by that fabulous radio station, Tenerife OasisFm! In 2008, Michelle was third runner up of the Young Promises competition in Arona. Although she is so young, she has always been highly motivated, and her passion and commitment shine through. Singing and performing is in her blood! It was only when she was 16 that she could finally start working properly as a singer. Her first show was a tribute to Queen. Michelle decided to leave high school early, without finishing her exams. She was soon in demand, and began

nutrition, and personal trainer, to name but a few! Deaf Liverpool man Beyond the grave! fights trial as he can only lip-read Scouse Pension scammers have collected over €6m so far
A DEAF British man, wanted in Spain, claims he will not get a fair trial because, he says: “I can only lip-read Scouse.” Harry Meadows, 39, is set to stand trial for his part in a UK gang’s crime spree, blowing up cash machines on the Costa del Sol. The father is fighting attempts to haul him before a Spanish judge, according to the Liverpool Echo. A report by the Merseyside paper claims Spanish officials have expressed concerns that Meadows could be exaggerating his condition “deliberately”. Meadows is wanted for his role in a British gang, who netted €350,000 from blowing up cash machines with hand-made explosives, between Marbella and Malaga. The Liverpool man and his cronies are alleged to have targeted ATMs at 14 banks, between 2013 and 2014. Spanish prosecutors are keen to extradite Meadows to Spain,
THE Guardia Civil were forced to attend an incident on the TF-1 on Wednesday night, after receiving several reports of a vehicle being driven in the wrong direction, in the Adeje municipality. Telephone calls were made directly to the Guardia at around 10.30pm, and officers rushed to the area to intercept the vehicle before there was any serious damage. These wrong-way drivers are considered to be unfamiliar with the road signs, or under the influence of drink or drugs, as well as the small few with suicidal intentions.
alongside five other suspects, who, reports the Echo, “are in UK prisons”. Meadows, who denies the allegations against him, had already served three months in a Spanish prison, before returning to the UK. Despite a judge approving an extradition order at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in 2018, there is still an ongoing legal battle. At the High Court in 2019,
Meadows’ lawyer argued that he “required a specialist lip-speaker who could pronounce words, and shape lips, to produce a Liverpool accent, which is a specialism rare in England, and rarer still in Spain”. His defence rests on the fact that he never learned sign language and is, therefore, “unfit” to stand trial in Spain, because he can’t lip-read Spanish.
Guardia race to halt a wrong-way driver
Breath-taking BA flight records fastest time ever AS powerful winds of 90mph swept across the UK last Saturday, causing heavy disruption to travel, Storm Ciara’s adverse weather conditions enabled a flight by British Airways to claim a record time.
The flight, from New York to London, took just 4hrs 56mins last Saturday night, reaching speeds of up to 800mph. That led to its Boeing 747 breaking the fastestever, subsonic, New York-London crossing time. Flightradar24, an online flighttracking service, reported that the British Airways Boeing 747, flying from JFK airport, reached
Heathrow in an astonishing time, overtaking the previous record set by Norwegian Airways, which took 5hrs 13mins in January 2018. It led to British Airways now regaining, from Norwegian, the fastest subsonic NY-London crossing. The plane reached its fastest ground speed of 825mph over Newfoundland at about 35,000ft, according to the online tracking service. A statement by British Airways read: “We always prioritise safety over speed records. But our highly-trained pilots made the most of the conditions to get customers back to London, well ahead of time.” The average flight time for the journey is usually around 6hrs 13mins. But Saturday’s 250mph winds in the jet stream allowed the plane to increase its pace.
POLICE have launched an investigation into a €6m pension scam, involving over 50 people who have died. And, so far, the Department of Social Security staff have uncovered several scams. A National Police spokesman said 55 cases were recorded during 2019 alone, and, in total, investigators have found €6.4m withdrawn, illegally, from deceased people’s pension accounts. Statistics showed that the main culprits of the withdrawals were family members close to the deceased, often spouses, children or grandchildren. It wasn’t always deceased accounts, either, because some accounts were those of elderly people living abroad, in countries including South and North America, as well as some European countries, During the investigation, detectives researched: *12,586 improper payments
*75 bank accounts *3 cases with more than €100,000 defrauded *40 pensions which were more than 10 years old *22 deaths, which occurred before 2000 *11 deaths of Spanish pensioners, which occurred abroad. In one case, a woman, whose mother passed away years prior, used an “actress” to continue withdrawing cash from her pension fund, using false documentation and collecting a total of nearly €74,000. Another was a bank employee, who used his knowledge of the system to claim the payments of a previous client who died. He forged cash receipts and log records, and used other elderly clients to fool his colleagues. In total, 11 people have so far been arrested, and a further 25 are under investigation, across 21 provinces throughout the country.

K9 Animal News ABOUT six months ago, this beautiful young girl was brought to us at K9. We gave her the name Terk. When she arrived, she was about seven months old, which was still very young. Terk didn’t have a great start in her short life, and was left at the police station in Granadilla. A gentleman named David saw her and brought her to K9. We did learn that she had been abused, so we knew that she would need a lot of love and attention. We didn’t know a huge amount of what exactly happened, just that some damage had already been done to her. Terk is a very energetic, playful dog, and sometimes this can be a bit much for other dogs and people. It isn’t her fault that she can be a bit overwhelming, so we are looking for a calm and patient new owner, for her to show her love, train with her on a one-to-one basis, and help her to learn and focus on you. She does enjoy playing with other dogs, who also want to play, but, sometimes, she can be a little rough for them. One of our volunteers likes to take her to the local dog park, where she can run around and play with other dogs. She is currently sharing with two,

large, male dogs, and we have noticed that she can be territorial over her food, something she may have developed as a really-young puppy, and was never trained not to be. Her new owner must be willing to train her and spend time with her. If you enjoy long walks, or even running, she would love to tag along with you, and it would also help her burn up some of the energy she has. She is still very young, so does need to be shown things, step by step. Being in the kennels is a very stressful place for Terk, and she can get easily frustrated, which can lead to unwanted behaviour. We put her in the large kennel across the road from the main kennels, to give her space to run. This does help, so, ideally, someone who has the space for her to be

Sad little Bambino
BAMBINO is a small, mixed-breed dog, and is approximately three years old. He was found abandoned, with no microchip. He’s really sweet, and loves to play. He’s very loving towards people, and good with other dogs. We soon realised he had been a house dog, because he really didn’t want to make a mess in his kennel. He’s good on the lead, and loves to go for a walk. He has been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, and is waiting for his new, forever home. Please contact us to ask questions, or to meet him.

Aren’t they lovely?
THESE gorgeous puppies are ready for foster homes, or, even better, loving forever homes. They are nearly eight weeks old, and still with their mother. They have big stunning eyes, are amazingly cute and curious, and ready to see more of the world. They will grow up to be mediumsized, around 20kg, with flat coats. able to run a lot, would be perfect. As we said, she likes to play with other dogs, so another dog in the house could work, and they could become the best of friends, thus helping Terk to learn more and more about dog behaviour. She really does need a second chance because she was neglected and abandoned, through no fault of her own, and has missed out of the important first few months of positive socialisation, as a puppy. It will take some time and training, but she is a very sweet girl, who is really misunderstood. Can you help her? Can you show this beautiful girl that she can be loved? Please come and meet her at K9, any day, between 9.30am1.30pm, on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. Call us on 667 638 468, or email info@k9tenerife.com.

Please do come and visit us, if you are interested in adopting a dog. Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours.

Nothing fishy about sardines SARDINES are often called the healthiest fish, and some experts call them a natural multivitamin. They’re highly nutritious, and cost less than most other protein sources. Health benefits Sardines are a tiny fish with a very big nutrient profile! In fact, very few other foods pack the same amount of nutrients, per ounce. Canned sardines are one of the few super-healthy, budget-friendly portable “fast foods” out there, and don’t carry the same mercury risk as bigger fish do. Calcium and phosphorus Sardines (even canned ones) are great, because they are
one of the few animal foods that we still consume every bit of, including the bones and skin. These “odd bits” of the fish contain important vitamins and minerals, including a great dose of calcium from the bones. One can contains about a third of the recommended daily amount of calcium, in a highlyabsorbable form. Phosphorus is an important mineral for bone and tooth

health as well, and difficult to find in food sources. Vitamin D One can of sardines contains almost half of the daily recommended amount of vitamin D. High in protein Sardines are a great protein choice. One 3oz can provides 23g of protein, and a big dose of vitamins. These tiny fish are considered to be a very efficient food, because they contain a large amount
of vitamins, protein and omega-3. Low in mercury Heavy metal contamination is an understandable concern, when consuming fish. Thankfully, sardines are considered to be one of the safest fish to consume, because of their small size. Sardines eat plankton, and are at the bottom of the ocean food chain. This means that they contain much less mercury, and other heavy
metals, than larger fish such as tuna. Ways to eat sardines *Straight out of the can, with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice *On healthier crackers, with a little bit of cheese *On a Caesar salad, with home-made or avocado oil Caesar dressing *Mashed into half of an avocado, with a squeeze of fresh lemon *In place of tuna in “tuna salad”, with home made mayo, mustard and pickles *With cottage cheese and hot sauce *Fisherman’s eggs - bake sardines with onions, eggs and spices *Scrambled into eggs, and topped with Hollandaise sauce *Mix canned sardines with some chopped red onions and olives

Mountain of a task
STORM Ciara apart, the calima that arrived here early last week was one of the worst I have experienced in my 23 years on the island.
There was a point when we couldn’t see the mountains or the coast. And, of course, it caused a lot of disruption to the golfing week, and to our health: sore throats, coughing, watery eyes, etc. I really feel for the people who come to the islands for holidays, and to play golf. But, sadly, there’s nothing we can do. A calima is the warm/hot easterly wind from Africa, which brings warm temperatures. As well as the dust and sand as the humidity falls and the temperature rises, and holds the dusty atmosphere, it also whips up the wind to a pretty scary blow; so much so that for safety to us golfers, the course closes. I do know that the Adeje Yellow Shirts had their Tuesday game cancelled. But by the Thursday, when I play with the Rabbits, it had almost gone. On that point, are you a PIN IN or PIN OUT golfer? I’m asking because the rules say that you can now have the flag-stick left in, taken away, or attended by your playing partners. But you must decide before making the stroke. I did just that on Thursday. I had the flag-stick left in and the ball struck the stick. But, instead of dropping in the hole, it perched itself right on the rim and stayed there (not even a gust of wind would blow it in), so I had to tap the ball in for another shot. However, in future I am going back to my old ways and will have the flag taken out. Talking about golf rules, of which there are many, on a light-hearted note, here are a couple from PGA 2020 RULE CHANGES FOR GOLFERS 50 + RULE 4 c7: If a putt passes over the hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The Law of Gravity supersedes the rules of Golf (that’s me). RULE 7G 15: There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, because golf balls should float, and senior players should not be penalised for any of the manufacturers’ shortcomings. At the moment, the Los Largos ground staff are draining a couple of the lakes, and the number of golf balls in this black, thick, smelly mud, will bring a tear to your eye. I know, because I’ve hit enough of them enough in there. And talking of Rules, I spotted this on the BBC website: “There could be turbulent times for golf, and the waters could, potentially, become even more choppy as the game’s governing bodies reveal that measures are needed to limit the length balls travel off the tee.” After signalling an intention to put brakes on the
distance players can smash their drives, the R&A and United States Golf Association (USGA), who set the sport’s rules, now need more of the game’s key stakeholders to buy into the project. With club and ball manufacturers, as well as leading professional tours, having expressed long-standing reluctance to embrace such moves, rule-makers can expect significant challenges to win them over. This comes at a time when organisations such as the PGA and European Tour are flexing their muscles to fight off the proposed Premier Golf League, with talk of a £183m prize fund to lure 48 of the world’s best players. It may lead to alterations to club and ball specifications, to limit their future effectiveness, as well as local rules, potentially, being introduced for certain courses and competitions. For years, distance has been one of golf’s most controversial topics. Many argue that the game’s character has been destroyed by saucepanheaded drivers, propelling hi-tech modern balls vast distances. The report states: “In 1995, the top-20 longest-hitters in elite, male competition, averaged 278 yards off the tee. By last year, that figure had risen to 310 yards. Longer distances, longer courses, playing from longer tees and longer times to play, are taking golf in the wrong direction.” The report concludes: “However, there are many interpretations of what “the right thing” might be, and debate will rage over coming months. It seems that the need for eventual consensus has never been greater. Anyway, on a lighter note, some of the results from last week shows how much we enjoy our days on the golf course. For instance, last Saturday’s Rabbits’ winner of the Stapleford was Janice Robinson, a lovely lady who is awaiting a knee operation and has her knee strapped up, But she went out there and gave it her all with 47points, off a 34 handicap. Heaven only knows what she will be like with a new knee! Well played Janice. Here are a few more results Costa Adeje Rabbits G/S Sat 8th: 1st, John Mcdonnell, 42pts, hdc 26; 2nd, Steven Swallow, 40pts, hdc 15; 3rd, PJ Noonan, 39pts, hdc 13. I had an email from Legends G/S George, following the society’s sad news that members James Duffy (Saturday) and Alan Gray (Monday) had passed away. To celebrate their lives and passion for the Society, a 3-club Memorial Challenge was played at Los Palos on Friday. The 19 members started their game with a oneminute round of applause for Alan and Jimmy, Some excellent golf was played and the winner was Clive, 45pts, with Graham just one point behind. RIP James and Alan. I also received a message from Tony Pearce, from the Amarilla Amigos G/S, who play on Amarilla golf course on Wednesdays, so we look forward to their news and results.

We’re still in the Pink! THERE were a few surprises on Week 23, but I’ll start with Div 2 for a change, and, as usual, Pink Elephant leading the charge.
Marilyns v Pink Elephant Can’t tell you much about it, except that Marilyns went the same way of many other teams against Pink Elephant, and, although there were, apparently, some close games, it was 8-0 to the visitors. Clouseau’s v Sundowners The away team started best, winning the first two matches, but Clouseau’s fought back to lead 3-2. They shared the doubles, so the home team needed the trebles for a draw, and they managed it. Picasso’s v Naughty Nautas Picasso’s went into a 4-0 lead against visiting Naughty Nautas, Joe offered some resistance to make it 4-1, but the resistance ended there, and it finished 7-1. Ourplace Breakaways v Palms Sports Bar Can’t tell you much about this one, either, except that everyone had a good night, and the visitors won 5-3. Scooters&Chevys B v Ourplace Playgirls Another match with no details supplied, but, apparently, it was a long, long night, which ended with a 5-3 home win. Club Activo v Pas O Nadas As usual, I’ll leave this one to Graham: “Activo 5–3, trebles to Activo! What an interesting night, full of ups and downs! Sheena played her socks off, and so did Tony! And pod is always dangerous! Great night. Thank you! The Club House v Emerald Lounge Rounding off Div 2, The Club House were at home to Emerald Lounge, and they went into a 2-0 lead. It was looking ominous for the Emerald. But Matt stopped the rot, and Andy backed it up by topping Charlie, who was unbeaten in the singles all season. There were some extremely close games, and it could have gone either way. It came down to Emerald needing the trebles for a draw, but it wasn’t to be, finishing 5-3 to the home team. Ourplace Playboys v Sandys Bandits The Playboys shot into a 4-0 lead, but Trish took the last singles game, to make it 4-1. Sandys took a doubles game as well, but it was too much to pull back, and the Playboys won 6-2, some consolation for Sandys: at least it couldn’t be another 16-0! Emerald B v Scooters&Chevys A This turned into a pretty long night, although the home team had only four players. Jackie F, who has a badly-broken foot, is out for the rest of the season. But they knew it was going their way when Lin not only won her first leg this season, but two more as well… and her first match! Congrats to Lin. It finished 5-3 to the home team. The Pub v Gaffers&Teamhollywood I don’t think many teams will have achieved this, but the visitors took all five singles against The Pub. It ended 6-2, and that was quite something from Gaffers. Suters 20;30 Crew v Mad Hatters John writes: “Suters 6 The Mad Hatters 2. Singles went to Suters 4-1, and the doubles also went to the home side 2-0. But the Hatters managed to snatch the trebles to make the result a bit more respectable. Some really good matches, but could have been closer with better finishing. Thanks to Suters for a good night out.” Sandy Bookie Boys v Loch Inn Bullseyes Match postponed. Pas O Nadas A v Waterfall Finally, we come to the irrepressible Pas O Nadas A, who welcomed Waterfall and did what they do to most of us mere mortals, beating them 8-0. But as Susan wrote on Facebook: “The result was expected, but a really great night. We played a team of gentlemen. Thanks guys!”

CD Tenerife TENERIFE first visited Almendralejo to play Extremadura in the 1954/55 season, but they have never brought three points home!

CDT break Extremadura curse in six-goal thriller! Extremadura UD 2 CD Tenerife 4
In fact, there have been 14 trips, resulting in a total of three points, with three draws and just two goals scored. But last Saturday, Baraja and his men, with their new-found form and confidence, broke this curse in emphatic style. Tenerife not only secured the three points, but scored four goals… and that tally could easily have been more! In their best performance of the Baraja era, the blanquiazules proved that in the Second Division, you can play good football and get important results, because their technical merit goes beyond the figures. Baraja has been ruthless, cleaning the changing room of what he considered to be “football waste”. He has managed to transfer his ideas to players like Nikola Sipcic, a different footballer now after his disastrous start to the season, and to Shaq Moore, who has grown in confidence, playing an important part in the transformation. The coach took a no-nonsense approach to this match, sticking with his favoured 4-4-2 and a starting XI which hasn’t changed much, apart from Ortolá in goal for the injured Dani Hernández. A strong back-four of Munoz, Sipcic, Alberto and Luis Pérez, had Nahuel, Aitor Sanz, Luis Milla and Shaq Moore in front of them, with no starting place for Suso, who was on the bench, and up-front, Dani Gomez and Joselu, the two in-form strikers. As the game started, it was plain to see that neither side wanted to give anything away, and the first 20 minutes was pretty uneventful, except for a yellow card for Extremadura forward Alex Alegria. All that changed, however, in the 27th minute, when CDT broke down the left with Alex Munoz, who
beat his man and put over a cross. It was deflected to the far post, where Shaq Moore, in a race with the defender, managed to toe-poke the ball past Casto to put Tenerife ahead. After this, all hell seemed to break loose and the game became frantic. But Baraja told his men to stay calm, be patient, and not make any silly mistakes… and it paid off! Dani Gomez received the ball wide right, and did really well to hold it up as he headed into the area. He then took on three Extremadura players, whose frustration showed through, and Pardo brought him down to concede a penalty. Luis Milla stepped up to take it and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way, making it 2-0 to the visitors with 39 minutes gone. Baraja didn’t make any half-time changes, and CDT’s players came out for the next 45 minutes with a spring in their step. They knew Extremadura would have to bring the game to them, and that it would be a tough, physical second half. In the 56th minute, what should have been a good

chance for the home team turned into disaster. Nono floated a cross into the Tenerife area, looking for Alegria, who swung for the ball, kicking Joselu in the process. As both players went to the ground, Extremadura claimed a penalty. But, quite rightly, the referee said No, and gave Alegria his second yellow card of the afternoon, sending him off to reduce the home team to 10 men. Yet they continued to try to find a way through, and six minutes later, VAR helped them get a penalty, after a handball by Sipcic during a challenge on Nono. Extremadura’s man of the match wasted no time in placing the ball on the spot and halving the deficit by beating Ortolá, just! The keeper got his fingertips to the ball, but not enough the prevent the home side from making it 2-1. In times gone by, Tenerife heads would have gone down at this point, and nerves would have kicked in. But this new-look CDT stayed calm, played football and, 13 minutes later, they were rewarded. Right-back Luis Perez had a great run down the wing, taking advantage of the overlap, and put over a low, hard cross that Dani Gomez met on the far post and blasted past Casto to make it 3-1 after 76 minutes. By now, Baraja was signalling to his players from the technical area to stay in formation and see out the game for a famous victory. But Extramadura, who didn’t want the record to go, continued to press. But this was to be their downfall because, in the 83rd minute, Tenerife broke with a counter-attack, and sub Javi Munoz played an excellent through-ball to Dani Gomez. He beat his man brilliantly, and slotted it home for his second and his team’s fourth of the day: 4-1 to CDT! This was, effectively, game over, and although Pinchi scored a conciliatory goal in the last minute after an Ortolá mistake, Tenerife had achieved an historic win, and are now six matches unbeaten, if you include their cup games. It was a fantastic result, lifting them to 14th in the table, and leaving Extremadura deeply in the relegation zone. It’s a good time to be a Tenerife fan right now, and Ruben Baraja is settling his squad and achieving their potential, especially as there are still key players injured. Their next two games are at home, starting with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, and a couple of wins could really push them up the table. If you’ve never been to Santa Cruz to see them play, do yourself a favour and go!
