The workers strike back! Climbdown by the Government, but unions still adamant about walk-out TRAVEL of any kind faces severe disruption throughout Tenerife on Wednesday (29th Sept) as a one-day General Strike by Spanish unions gets underway. It will prove to be a nightmare for visitors and residents alike, especially tourists from the UK and other European countries scheduled to fly that day. Yet the strike - Spain’s first for eight years - won’t be quite as severe as first envisaged. In an unprecedented move, the Government made various concessions to the strikers, following a ten-hour meeting which ended at 5am yesterday (Thursday). The two main trade unions, CCOO and UGT had threatened wholesale disruption to all forms of travel, especially at airports, with the Government fighting them all the way. But the deadlock was finally broken when Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s Socialist Party climbed down. After all-night negotiations, José Blanco the Minister for Public Works, and union secretaries Antonio del Campo and José Javier Cubillo, reached a “global” agreement concerning minimum transport serv-

ices during the strike. Transport Secretary Jose Luis Cachfeiro said the deal was put in place “to guarantee calm during the day of the strike”. At an extraordinary press conference, held immediately after the meeting at 5am, it

was confirmed that the minimum service for international flights would include 20% of trips in the European Union and 40% of those to other countries. Inside Spanish territory, it will allow for 10% of flights within the Spanish peninsula,

and 50% between the mainland and the Canary and Balearic Islands. The agreement also means a minimum of 20% of highspeed trains and 25% of district trains, including 30% for morning rush-hour. But no regional or long-distance trains are guaranteed. In addition, between one and three inter-city buses will be allowed to run, and the meeting had already found common ground on the level of services at ports. The unions called the strike

in protest at the Government’s sweeping overhaul of the labour market, designed to cut soaring unemployment and revive the economy. They are also fighting steep spending cuts, including an average state employee salary reduction of 5%, and plans to raise the retirement age gradually to 67 from 65. Union leaders say the strike will cover all types of public transport across the whole country - air, rail, sea and road.

At the last General Strike, in 2002, then Conservative Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar imposed minimum services which angered unions who, unsuccessfully, sued the government. One set of workers unaffected by the latest strike plans are taxi drivers, who are self-employed and under no obligation from unions. Yet many say they won’t work because of the expected pickets. Also, most cabbies are unhappy because they receive no benefits at all, and they oppose the new retirement age of 67 because they don’t receive a pension until that age now. The major unions hope hundreds of thousands of workers will support the strike, while union boss Manuel Pastrana said: “September 29th should be a day without consumption.” The overall situation is seen by some British newspapers as drastic, the Daily Mail saying that Spain was likely to descend into travel chaos. Canarian Weekly has contacted many organisations used throughout our daily lives, Post Office, Banks, Bus and Tram services plus supermarkets who still seem vague as to whether they will be open or closed next Wednesday. Some businesses may operate on a skeleton staff. Meanwhile, there was a taste of what is to come when Iberia cancelled 22 flights because of yesterday’s General Strike in France. Yet here in Tenerife, despite all the inconveniences, life will still go on as near to normal as possible on Wednesday.

www.canarianweekly.com The Nature and Adventure Program commences its 2010 season of guided walks. The Cabildo has launched the fifteenth edition of the Nature and Adventure Programme, a series of excursions designed to offer the people of Tenerife alternative leisure and sporting activities. The programme consists of excursions through the island’s natural parks on the weekends and is divided into two phases. The second phase runs from October to December. Activities include hiking, adventure trails, multi-activity days, abseiling and stargazing walks.

Nature and Adventure Programme The aim of the program is to offer residents and visi-

tors a wide range of leisure and sporting activities in the

island’s natural parks. Some of the activities are suitable

for the whole family, whilst others require some experi-

ence, such as the climbing activities and some of the more difficult hikes. In order to help people decide which activity is most suitable for them, the program is divided into three levels of difficulty. Level-one activities are less demanding than level-three activities, as level-three activities are generally trails that require considerable effort and skill. The hiking and ravine excursions can accommodate up to 30 people, whilst the difficult adventure trails are organised for small groups of up to 8 people. The largest event is the multiactivity day, which can cater for up to 50 people. All in all, the Nature and Adventure Program opens up a whole range of possibilities for those who would like to discover in a sustainable, healthy and accessible way some of the island’s most spectacular areas and natural phenomena, such as the flowering of some of Tenerife’s native plant species which occurs in areas that can only be reached on foot. The excursions usually depart from and return to the same point, Plaza de Europa in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Prices for excursions range from 12 euros to 30 euros, depending on whether the trip includes an overnight stay and the type of material required, which organisers sometimes provide. Prices include transport by bus, guides and insurance. Those interested in participating in the Nature and Adventure Program can register with the Sports Department by calling 922 239 820 or 922 239 511.

Spain government gains support SPAIN’S government has reached a deal with a small opposition party that will help it pass a 2011 budget that is key to getting the deficit down, reassuring markets worried over the country’s finances and its survival in power.

The ruling Socialist party leads a minority government that relies on support from opposition parties on a caseby-case basis to get laws passed. The government has become even more isolated of late as parties criticize its handling of Spain’s economic crisis, marked by a 20 percent jobless rate and listless growth after nearly two years of recession. Failure to pass a budget would be unprecedented and presumably force Prime

24 September 2010 - 30 September 2010

Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to call early elections. The ruling party’s spokesman in Parliament, Jose Antonio Alonso, announced last Wednesday a deal with the small Basque Nationalist Party that will probably guarantee its support for the budget. The Basque party’s leader, Inigo Urkullo confirmed the deal and said his party has “a lot of interest in the economic stability of Spain.”

The government has 169 seats in the 350-member Parliament and the Basque party has six, for a total of 175. So the government needs at least one more vote, or another opposition party to abstain when the budget is voted on. It will be unveiled Friday, then go to Parliament for debate. The deal with the Basques comes with a price tag. Jurisdiction over employment and other labor policies in that region — a long-stand-

ing demand of the Basques — will be transferred to the Basque government in a package worth euro472 million ($630 million). The government says the national spending blueprint will be an austere one aimed at achieving its goal of slashing the deficit — 11.2 percent of national income last year — to the EU limit of 3 percent in 2013. News reports also said the government, which has alienated many leftists in Spain with

its austerity plan, is considering raising income taxes on the highest earners in Spain. The newspaper El Pais said this would affect people earning more than euro120,000 a year, a tiny minority in a country where the average yearly salary is about euro20,000. So the extra deficit-cutting revenue from the increase would be minimal. The Finance Ministry has not confirmed the planned tax hike. Source Associated Press

Tourism in Spain continues to grow Buyer beware A WORD FROM OUR EDITOR

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Bear in mind what follows is my personal opinion – I will never shop in another ASDA store as long as I live! I have 48 hours in the UK, time to shop. Newspapers, magazines and billboards express how brilliant this American owned supermarket is; not a regular visitor I thought I’d give it a go. My first experience initially was painless and my basket of shopping relatively cheap. How wrong I was! Next stop on my shopping mission – Tesco; piles of freshly baked hot cross buns attempt to entice me as I walk through the doors, through aisles of ‘two for one’ offers I spy a product that I purchased in ASDA, here at a much cheaper price. I then double check the weight, price etc - I feel like I’m on a consumer watchdog programme – but, I’m correct. If I had bought this particular item here in Tesco I would have saved two pounds. Now in isolation saving two pounds doesn’t seem too bad, but I bought six of these things so we’re looking at a financial loss of 12 pounds. Not to worry I thought, go back to ASDA explain the situation as they promote so heavily their price guarantee – no not so easy. I queue at the customer service desk, explain the situation,

I’m then told in a broad Bristolian accent, “we don’t match prices.” I retort, “But what about all the advertising?” “No, you would have to bring in an advertisement, but we don’t do that no more. You have to put your receipt details into a computer.” It transpires that you have to log the details from your receipt into ASDA’s website that then compare it against Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. I explained that I didn’t have access to a computer, could someone just do it for me, but no they were too busy, a call to the customer services manager was then made who said I should go to the library. By this time my normal placid temperament is starting to waiver, but infused enough to visit said library, enter all the details etc, etc and low and behold, you guessed it, my shopping was cheaper in ASDA. The bit of the puzzle that’s missing is that ASDA in their small print price guarantee your basket of items (terms and conditions apply) they will not price match one single item. The list of terms and conditions are endless so basically it’s just one big advertising ploy – which encouraged me to break loyalty and shop with them, sucked me in and then unfortunately spat me out. I will never go back.

SPAIN’s influx of seven million foreign tourists last month showed a 4% improvement over the same period in 2009, and the largest increase in August for four years. The new figures show it is the fourth month of tourist growth, after going up by 1.1% in May, 1.7% in June, and 4.5% in July. It means that 37 million foreign tourists have visited Spain so far this year, which is just a 0.4% increase from 2009. The two most important

markets for the Spanish sector show the UK with a rise of 0.3% (1.6 million) in August, but a decrease of 0.6 (957 559) for the Germans. However, both markets have not recovered even growth, and maintain sharp falls of 7.6% in the United Kingdom (8.7 million) and 3% in Germany (6 million). Italy shows a dramatic 11% increase in August, and a rise in the aggregate 8.9%, while France, another important source market, has grown by 3.7% this month, and 2% in the year. Catalonia and the Balearic Islands have received more international tourists, with 1.7 million in August (6.6%), and

9.4 million in the first eight months (3.1%), for the first region, and 1.6 million (10.9%) in August and 6.8 million (0.5%) in the annual aggregate. Andalusia has fallen by 4.5% in August, with 1.04 million tourists and 0.3% in the eight months, to 5.3 million, while Valencia has dropped 1% in the same month, maintaining a 1.6% fall in the aggregate. The Canary Islands have growth of 7.9% and 3.8% in August and eight months, respectively, and the Community of Madrid increased by 0.3%, while falling by 5.8% in the year. Tourists staying at hotels in Spain numbered 3.86 million

in August, a rise of 8%, while in the first eight months of the year, there were 22 million, or 2.9% more. Those not using this type of accommodation grew by 0.5% in August and fell 2.2% overall. There were 1.8 million package-tour visitors in Spain, which was 3.7% less in August than last year, while those not using package tours totalled, respectively, five million (7.8%) and 25.9 million (0.9%) tourists. And provisional data of the Incoming Tourism Statistics from Tenerife Cabildo shows a slight increase of 1.15% visitors to the Island in the first eight months of the year, amounting to 3.233 million.

Tortoises’ tea time toes have now been given to Colchester Zoo. Anthony Tropeano, from the zoo, said: “Our annual bill for feeding the many endangered species... is over

£200,000 so we are very grateful.” Officers’ attention was drawn to the shipment by a discrepancy in the documentation.

It would have cost the UK £2m in unpaid VAT and excise duty. Brian Hill, UK Border Agency assistant director at the port, said: “Clearly, our first priority is to disrupt the smuggling operation, but when we make seizures like this we will also try and find a productive use for the cover load. “Obviously, tomatoes discovered in this fashion are unsuitable for public consumption, but I am pleased that they seem to have gone down very well with the tortoises at Colchester Zoo.”

WHAT’S ON Tragic DJ death

Tenerife Opera Festival From 22/09/2010 To 22/10/2010 The Opera Festival is a must see in the cultural schedule of Tenerife. This may be probably the last edition as a Tenerife exclusive event due to its future joining of forces with the same festival in Gran Canaria, in a bid to increase the quality of the performances. “Falstaff” and “Madame Butterfly”, by Verdi and Puccini, are the two works included in the program with “Un baúl lleno de ópera” an event aimed at making this extraordinary style appeal to kids. International Tourist Day 24th – 26th September Los Cristianos A series of events will be taking place including live Canarian folk music in the square at 8pm on Sunday 26th.

A TENERIFE DJ, who appeared with some biggest names in the music industry, was found dead by friends on his 32nd birthday. Gifford Noel, who appeared on Oasis Fm just weeks ago, and is described as “a legend” on his Facebook page, used the names TNT and DJ Trend. The Londoner, who had worked here for several months, is thought to have suffered a heart attack in his Playa de Las Americas apartment. Police confirmed he had died from natural causes. He had performed alongside the likes of Dizzee Rascal, The Streets and the Sugababes, and was making a big reputation for himself in the clubs, working recently in the Oasis Bar in Veronicas amongst others. His mother, Deborah, discovered he was dead when friends asked the family to contact them through his Facebook page. “It was his birthday,” she

said. “We were trying to get through to him and couldn’t, and it wasn’t like him at all. We thought we’d Facebook him because he’d lost a couple of mobiles before.” The DJ’s four sisters then discovered something was wrong. “They went on Facebook, and a message came up asking for any family to contact his friends,” added Ms Noel, who flew straight here with her 23year-old daughter Krystle. Dizzee Rascal wore a T-shirt with the slogan “RIP DJ Trend” last Sunday while

judging the final of Sky’s talent show Must Be The Music. The top rapper told viewers: “I have got to say Rest in Peace DJ Trend - never forgotten, drum and bass specialist, legend. “I come up on this man. He’s just been one of my inspirations as a youth. Can’t forget this dude.” Krystle added her own tribute, saying: “He was the best big brother I could have asked for. He was caring, considerate.” His mother said: “He was a gentle person, and music was his passion.”

Many local tributes have been made to the young man, including Oasis Fm DJ Joe Ferguson, who interviewed him on his Lineker’s Lunchtime Show about six weeks ago, he said: “He was a lovely bloke. He was appearing at TIBU and seemed genuinely nervous at being on air. “It’s funny how you remember things. We had such a laugh and at the end, he gave me a huge bear hug, and said: “We’re different colours but you’ll always be my bro!”

Tenerife gateway to Waste removal African investment THE COUNCIL removed 745 kilos of waste from the beaches of Tenerife during the summer.

U.S. highlights role of Tenerife as the gateway to investment in Africa. The ambassador, Alan Solomont, stressed the “harmony” on the vision that Obama shares the management and the projects promoted by the Cabildo. The United States ambassador in Spain, American, Alan Solomont, has highlighted the role played by

the island of Tenerife to “attract” American investment and reach the African continent. Solomont has shown at a recent news conference with President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, his commitment to the work being carried out by the Corporation to raise the Canary Islands as a tricontinental shelf. The ambassador recalled that U.S. President Barack Obama has argued that the

challenges that the economic forces that affect his country and Spain are “global” and therefore require global responses. He therefore advocated “strengthening economic ties between the two countries and encourage Spanish investment in both the U.S. and the U.S. in Spain. They want to “double” the U.S. investment in Spain over the next five years. Solomont said the United States seeks to export more

Day-care van tragedy of ‘forgotten’ old folk TWO old men with dementia, who were wheelchair-bound, died after being left for over 11 hours in the van transporting them to their Madrid day-care centre. Luis Miguel Aranda, codirector of the Virgen del Consuelo centre, had driven the men there on Saturday morning and then, subsequently, forgot about them. He was arrested and charged with negligent

homicide by the Guardia Civil the same day. Aranda said he had arrived at the centre at about 9am and took the patients with Alzheimer’s into the centre first. He was then distracted by a telephone call and forgot to return to the van for the other patients. Staff did not notice anyone was missing because the two men, aged 87 and 83 respectively, did not go there every day.

Aranda said he found the men when he went back to the van, in the centre’s internal car park, at 8pm. Yet the families of the men say they found the men dead inside the van, after wondering what had happened to them. products to the world and so stressed that U.S. companies should make a big bet with the Canaries to invest in Africa. He also stressed the “harmony” on the vision that Obama shares on the management and the projects promoted by the Cabildo. He also referred to renewable energy. He recalled that Obama has announced that over the next ten years 15,000 million dollars will be spent in this area. “Spain can lead,” the ambassador said, adding that half of the wind projects in their country are destined for Spanish companies. He also explained that American entrepreneurs are in Spain, since it will invest 1,000 million dollars on a solar project to be developed in Extremadura. Melchior recalled relations between the island and Miami with the direct connecting flight. He added this was also informed by the economic and fiscal conditions of the archipelago which can interest U.S. corporations and foundations. “It opens a new era in relations between the Cabildo de Tenerife and the United States,” concluded Melchior.

The Tenerife Cabildo has removed 745 kilos of waste from the coastline of the island, during the campaign, it has been developed during the months of July, August and September in different coastal areas. This initiative, launched by the Office of Environmental Voluntary Participation and managed by the public company Ideco, has enjoyed the participation of 250 volunteers of all ages. Puertito beaches Güímar, Candelaria and San Marcos (Icod de los Vinos) were the sites chosen to develop this initiative that was launched originally in 2007. In these three areas not only have they proceeded to clean the beach, but also children’s workshops have been developed and release of turtles from the Center for Wildlife Recovery “The Tahonilla.” The aim of the campaign is not limited to the volunteers to clean the beach waste, but is accompanied by appropriate explanations to

the participants about the serious effects that the accumulation of garbage in natural environments has. In doing this it seeks to raise awareness among the users of our coastline on the importance of protecting and conserving marine biodiversity and contribute to marine conservation. In this fourth edition of the campaign it stressed that more residues were located in Candelaria, where in one day they removed 370 kilos of waste. On the beach of San Marcos, Icod de los Vinos, the 50 volunteers who participated in this initiative by the council removed 275 kilos of waste, while in Guimar, the town which launched the campaign this year, volunteers found 100 kilos. The Cabildo de Tenerife would like toi acknowledge the participation of the municipalities of Guimar, Candelaria and Icod de los Vinos; associations Neotropical Foundation, Spanish Red Cross, Quimerasub, Anforasub, Asmesub, FAST Co, Pepsi Cola, Pyramids Ethnographic Park, VKS Sport and Hara Group.

A landscape conservation TRAMWAY TENERIFE and JSP participating in the initiative “Tenerife, a world of landscapes to conserve” The Cabildo has launched a public awareness campaign on the need to maintain the landscape. Tramway Tenerife and JSP company are involved in the initiative known as Tenerife, a world of landscapes to preserve, part of the project “gestures by the Landscape”, developed by the Ministry Delegate since 2009. The CEO of Landscape and Urban Environment, Coromoto Yanes, said that “in this way we seek to raise awareness about the richness, variety and importance of the landscapes of the island, whilst reflecting on the need for all participate in its conservation.“ In this first stage of the campaign we have chosen to bring the message to the public while performing everyday activities such as travel by tram or taking coffee. In this sense it is planned to disseminate campaign materials in the interiors and stops of the tram, as well as on more than a million and a half of sugar packets from JSP, corporate partner in this campaign, distributed in restaurants across the whole island. Through an innovative and colorful graphic image, it conveys the idea that Tenerife is

in itself a planet of world views. The pleasant informational texts bearing the message that the countryside is in any territory as perceived by the population, including the everyday environment, the gradient, urban, or agricultural, among others, beyond the great prospects natural landscape with perhaps traditionally identifies the concept. Thus, our landscapes are

important and play a key role in our welfare and development, so that all of society must be involved in their protection. Images displayed on the interior of the tram and its stops will allow us to take a moment to reflect on the importance and beauty of our environment and our role in its preservation, as we reach our destination, recalls the island councillor.

Tragic Scottish couple could have been dead for 12 days A SCOTTISH couple may have lain dead in their Playa de Las Americas apartment for nearly two weeks before being discovered last Monday. The badly-decomposed bodies of 57-year-old Jimmy Mutch and Beatrice Sallens, 69, were found by police after being alerted by the caretaker. The woman was found dead on the bed, while the man had a head injury and was found in the living room. Despite unconfirmed reports of a bloody scene, however, detectives believe the couple, who rented the Los Cardones apartment, died

from natural causes. A subsequent post-mortem revealed no evidence of violence. The Glasgow man was said to be a serious asthmatic who could hardly walk more than a few paces. A Guardia Civil spokesman said: “It appears that both deaths were as the result of natural causes, and they may have died as early as 8th September.” Caretaker Daniel Herrera Padilla, who contacted the police, said: “A neighbour had already told me that something must have happened because the smell coming out when you passed by was unbearable. “A trail of what looked liked dried blood was coming out of the home towards the patio.”

The couple’s close friend, Lettie Aitken, 63, said Beatrice and Jimmy had realised their dreams of living in Tenerife when they retired seven years ago. They leased out their Glasgow flat and used the cash to pay for their rent here. Lettie said: “Jimmy always wanted to retire at 50, and that’s what he did. They met while working at the Glasgow Museum of Transport more than 20 years ago, and they were always great friends before they became a couple. She added: “I have heard talk that Jimmy may have banged his head on the balcony. He liked to sit there and have a smoke. They were a great couple and this is a terrible tragedy.”

Guest soloists on this occasion are: Elena Gomez in the children’s section, Juan Antonio González, Magnolia Cruz, Haridi Nuria Rodriguez and Morales in the youth, Isabel and Fernando Leon Jiménez at the Ventura Adult and Diaz in the older group. The music will narrate through four decades how Los Cristianos evolved from a fishing village to become the economic engine of the south island of Tenerife.

JENNIFER LOPEZ and Steven Tyler are joining Randy Jackson as American Idol judges after months of speculation about the future of the toprated show.

Actress-singer-dancer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Tyler will be replacing former judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul, returning the panel to its original threemember format for series 10. Tyler said he wanted to join the show because he wants to be part of something as big as Idol. “I want to bring some rock to this rollercoaster and show

if you’ve got the heart, the talent, the feeling to do this you could be the next American Idol,” he said. Jennifer Lopez has reportedly been paid £7m to join the show and says she is “looking for the next Michael Jackson”.

Simon Cowell announced last January that he planned to leave American Idol to launch a new talent show for Fox in 2011, with newcomers Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi exiting this summer. Abdul left in 2009 over a contract dispute.

Randy Jackson will be the only original judge when American Idol returns in January. The show’s producers will be hoping the Lopez-Tyler pairing will help to stem a ratings slide and bring in younger viewers.

UK Mortgage approvals slump to 16-month low gage approvals fell, said the BBA. And it came despite the fact that the property market usually sees a bounce in activity during the summer months. “Demand for mortgages continues to be weak despite more properties reportedly coming on to the market,” said David Dooks of the BBA. “Even with stable or falling house prices the current economic climate makes it unlikely that demand will pick up in the near future,” he added. The value of home loans approved in August dropped 7.2% to £4.7bn, a 15-month low.

THE NUMBER of mortgage approvals slumped to a 16month low during August as activity in the housing market continued to decline, new figures indicate. Only 31,767 loans were granted for people buying a property during the month, according to the British Bankers’ Association (BBA). This was down from 34,219 in July - and was the lowest level since April last year. It was the third consecutive month during which mort-

Canarian reunion tour THE CABILDO recently received a Canary group of immigrants now living in Cuba these days who recently visited Tenerife. During the ceremony, the president of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, recalled the value of all of these initiatives, the Canarians had courage they had to emigrate during hard times and never lost their love for the land of their birth. The president recalled, “they all contributed greatly to the development of this territory." Their visit to the

Cabildo is part of a ‘Reunion Tour’ each year organized by the Deputy Ministry of Immigration and Cooperation of the Government of the Canary Islands. The event was also attended by the insular Advisor for Economic Development, Trade and Employment, Efraín Medina, who emphasised that "Tenerife does not end with its territorial borders it’s anywhere in the world inhabited by one from the Cabildo of Tenerife and we never forget any of them."

German tourist saved from being buried in beach tunnel SPANISH firefighters saved a 23-year-old German tourist from being buried alive on a Tenerife beach on Wednesday after a tunnel he built in the sand collapsed. The young man had apparently planned to connect two holes more than two metres deep with a tunnel, but the sand collapsed around him, trapping him up to his neck for almost two hours. His girlfriend called emergency services, who rushed to the scene in a helicopter and managed to pull the man out uninjured with the

help of other nearby beachgoers. “He had built a three-metre (10-foot) deep hole when the sand buried him,” a Tenerife fire department spokeswoman told news agency AFP, adding that five vehicles and 15 fire fighters were involved in the rescue. Spanish newspaper Diario de Avisos charged the vacationer with stupidly endangering himself and forcing the massive rescue operation. “Foolishness cost the Canary Islands taxpayers 20,000 euros,” the paper wrote.

Wednesday Club's first birthday bash THE Wednesday Club celebrates its first year on 29th September, which is, of course, next Wednesday. The Club has shown a steady growth in membership throughout the year, and has proved the need for a get-together place for older or lonely people, where they can enjoy a bit of fun. Double-Dip fears as Irish economy is on slide again

French workers strike over pension reforms WORKERS in France are holding another day of strikes and protests against plans to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62. Fewer than half the lines on the Paris Metro are working normally and many scheduled long-haul trains not expected to run. Several airlines have had to cancel flights. Easyjet said they had been instructed to reduce their normal flying schedule. Union leaders are aiming to beat the turnout of September 7, when at least 1.1 million people took to the streets to protest against the planned overhaul of the pension system.

The strikes are seen as a test of power of the conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy. A poll in the left-leaning Liberation daily paper suggested 63% of respondents supported the strikers, while 29% backed the government. Almost 60% opposed the plan to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62, with 37% in favour of the plan, according to the poll. Mr Sarkozy has indicated he is willing to make small concessions but appears determined to stick to his plans, which also include putting up the age for retiring on full benefits from 65 to 67. The government insists it is necessary to increase the retirement age so the pension system can break even by 2018.

Obama urges UN to back Middle East’s peace plan THERE are fears that Ireland could be heading for a double-dip recession after the troubled economy contracted in the second quarter of the year. Businesses had shown signs of picking up in the first part of 2010 so the latest figures were unexpected and a blow to the country. If an economy shrinks for two successive quarters, it means it is in recession. The new figures showed Irish’s shrank by 1.2%, compared with analysts’ predictions of a rise of 0.5%. The contraction came despite more upbeat news earlier in the week when the Irish economy passed a key investor confidence test. It raised 1.5bn euros in an

auction of government bonds, which were oversubscribed up to five times. This had demonstrated an appetite for Irish risk despite the country’s surging deficit and bank bail-out costs. The value of goods and services, including foreignowned companies, declined 1.2% between April and June. This Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figure compared with growth of 2.2% in the first quarter when Ireland exited a sharp recession. Homegrown businesses were also hit this time but not to the same extent, with their value down by 0.3%. The disappointing Irish second quarter numbers have certainly exacerbated investor nervousness. The Republic’s Central Statistics Office (CSO) said the economy suffered a fall in

24 September 2010 - 30 September 2010

consumer spending - down 1.7% compared with the same period last year. The national accounts showed exports continued to show strong growth, up 884m euros (£750m) on the same three months in 2009. The CSO also reported the overall value of industry output grew 1.7% compared with the second quarter of last year. But construction, one of the biggest victims of the country’s downturn, was down 28%. Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said the figures showed homegrown business had stabilised and weaknesses in the economy came from a surge in imports over the three months. “This had a depressing impact on the overall GDP

(gross domestic product) figure,” he said. Mr Lenihan said the economic data needed to be read in conjunction with other reports on unemployment and the public finances. “For instance, labour market data published earlier this week, while remaining weak, point towards stabilisation, while the public finances to end-August are on target,” he said. Analyst Giles Watts at trading firm City Index said: “The disappointing Irish second quarter numbers have certainly exacerbated investor nervousness ... driving the euro lower. “Despite the protestations from senior Irish politicians, there is concern for the Irish obligations and moreover the health of the European economic recovery generally.”

BARACK OBAMA calls on world leaders to unite around the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in a speech at the UN. The US President told the General Assembly an agreement for peace in the Middle East was possible within a year. He said without a deal, more blood would be shed and the Holy Land would remain a “symbol of our differences, instead of our common humanity”. However, for a peace talks to be successful, Mr Obama said both sides had to recognise each other’s right to exist.

“True security for the Jewish state requires an independent Palestine - one that allows the Palestinian people to live with dignity and opportunity,” he said. “Efforts to threaten or kill Israelis will do nothing to help the Palestinian people - the slaughter of innocent Israelis is not resistance, it is injustice. “When we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that will lead to a new member of the United Nations - an independent, sovereign state of Palestine, living in peace with Israel.” Mr Obama also told UN leaders it was time for Iran to confirm its peaceful nuclear intentions.

Who ate all the pies? SALES of pies and pasties have risen in the recession, with nearly £1bn worth of them sold last year, new figures suggest. There was a 5% rise in 2009, making the UK market worth £941m, as Britons looked for a good value treat in the downturn. More pies and pasties are expected to be shifted this year, with sales predicted to be £962m, said market research firm Mintel. And by 2012, people are expected to eat over £1bn worth of the foods. The snacks seem to be a firm favourite among living in the Midlands, with up to 90% of people having eaten one in the past 12 months. By flavour, beef pies are a favourite among those in the Midlands (60%), while sausage rolls are a big hit with those in the South East and East Anglia (58%). And true to the origins of the pasty, those living in the South West are among its biggest fans as 54% of those

in the South West and Wales claim to have eaten one over the past year. Mintel’s Vivianne Ihekweazu said: “Consumers returned to the familiar as the economic downturn put a dent in their disposable income, forcing them to reconsider their spending priorities. “Today, more and more Brits are continuing to buy pies and pasties as they rediscover their benefits, and they are proving particularly appealing to those on a limited budget.

“While pies were often previously seen as being old fashioned, they have benefited from being repositioned as a popular gastro pub meal staple.” Various upmarket pie shops have opened in recent years, many in the City of London, selling gourmet lunchtime dishes to workers, helping to boost the image of pies. Mintel predicts the market for pies and pasties is set to grow by a further 17% over the next five years to reach £1.123bn by 2017.

Delhi - race against time AS THE Canarian Weekly goes to print many British media are adding further fuel to the Commonwealth games fire with fresh pictures and stories. New pictures obtained by Sky News show the shoddy conditions inside the Commonwealth Games Village in Delhi. They reveal India’s ramshackle preparations to house 7,000 of the world’s top athletes just ten days before the Games begin. Reports state that 40% of the 34 new tower blocks built for the stars are still not ready or clean. Stray dogs have been living in the buildings, and the reek of human and animal sewage is apparent as soon as you enter the area. A team from The Times gained access to the athletes’ lodgings - an area said to be off limits to the media. They said they were met with exposed electric wires and open manholes. “We discovered a complex

that, barring a miracle, will not come close to the minimum standards expected of the shoddiest holiday resort by the time the first athletes are due to arrive,” said reporter Rhys Blakely. In the Indian government’s scramble to rescue the situation, he said there was evidence of child labour being used. Some of the children were as young as seven. The Indian Prime Minister is holding emergency talks in Delhi in an attempt to avoid an international boycott of the Games. Manmohan Singh intervened after the event was threatened with a mass exodus from countries worried about health and security issues. The first members of England’s team, from men’s

hockey and lawn bowls, will leave for India later as uncertainty over the future of the competition continues. So far Scotland, New Zealand and Canada have delayed their departures, and some nations may not take part at all after a ceiling collapsed in the weightlifting arena. It came a day after 27 people were injured when a footbridge at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium - the centrepiece of the Games - collapsed. Sir Andrew Foster, chairman of Commonwealth Games England, says he is “very concerned” about standards in Delhi and still requires assurances from organisers over the athletes’ village and the games arenas.

Viagra drug wars TESCO is offering a boost to impotent men as a Viagra price war breaks out on the high street. The supermarket is to start selling the drug over the counter at half the price of Boots. Last year, Boots became the first store to sell Viagra, which was previously only available on prescription, direct to customers. The drug was available at £55 for four pills - but Tesco has upped the stakes by selling it at £52 for eight from Monday. It will be the first supermarket to offer the anti-impotence drug but men who want it will have to be aged 40-65 and have a health check first. Staff at the firm’s 300 instore pharmacies have been trained to help customers complete a questionnaire and undergo blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests. If the tests show they are suitable, the men will be offered the pills. But those with abnormal glucose, cholesterol or blood pressure may be refused the drug. The supermarket’s spokesman Shona Scott said: “Tesco will be the cheapest service in the country for those who don’t have a private prescription from their GP. “At the moment only Boots

Page 14

offer a similar service - for which they charge £55 for just four tablets.” Boots said that after the first prescription, its customers pay £57.43 for eight tablets - a cost which is slightly more than Tesco. Erectile dysfunction affects around 2.3 million men in the UK. Half of all men over 40 experience it at some point. A spokeswoman said that there would be “discreet consulting areas” for those that may be embarrassed about asking about the drug. She said the supermarket was “pleased to be offering” Viagra as erectile dysfunction was a “very common problem”. A Tesco source reportedly said a special training course had prepared pharmacists for different types of customers. “One scenario saw an older man who was very nervous and couldn’t get his words out,” the source said. Others involved a man coming in and sitting down confidently and discussing his problem openly using slang terms. When Boots first began testing over-the-counter sales a year ago, hundreds of men apparently travelled many miles to buy Viagra. It is thought that many were simply too embarrassed to ask their doctor for a prescription.

Police are not taking 'yobs' that seriously Police are failing to get to grips with neighbourhood yobs because they do not take the problems they cause seriously enough, a report has concluded. The study says around 14 million incidents of anti-social behaviour take place each year - the equivalent of 26 every minute. Figures unveiled by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary (HMIC) found that just two in five of those reporting problems were aware of any action being taken in response. Just over half felt their call had made any difference, the report also revealed. And the survey of more

than 5,000 people who had reported anti-social behaviour (ASB) said one third had been intimidated by yobs as a result of their tip-offs. It formed part of a wider study that suggested police should stop downgrading calls about ASB and that officers should take to the streets to intervene in problems earlier. Chief inspector of constabulary Sir Denis O’Connor said combating ASB was not seen as “real police work” and “does not have the same status as ‘crime’ for the police”. “The public do not distinguish between anti-social behaviour and crime,” he said. “For them, it’s just a sliding scale of grief.” He added that only a quarter of the incidents of ASB, about 3.5m, were reported annually - but that those calls

should be taken seriously. “Some people don’t think this is real policing,” he said. “This kind of area matters but it doesn’t count very much in the current system, not in the way that crime does. We can do better than this.” Anti Social Behaviour :: 32% of people who reported ASB experienced intimidation as a result. :: Two in five people reporting ASB were aware of any police action in reponse. :: 54% of those who made calls about ASB felt it had made any difference. He added targets for the reduction of crime meant ASB reports were often not treated as a priority by detectives. Sir Denis said police had “retreated from the streets”

in recent decades and warned anticipated spending cuts could further harm the response to ASB. He said: “I’m calling for bobbies on the beat to be the last thing to go. “It would be terrible, tragic if we repeated the mistakes of the past.” Former investigative officer for the Met police Peter Kirkham said a lack of resources meant less time for dealing with ASB. “You can trace everything we are talking about back to the amount of office work there is to do,” he said. “You have to write lots of files. You have to write up the evidence. “Administration is good, and you need accountability, but that does take up officers’ time.”

guidelines to Fake goods seized in New tackle cyber-stalking Olympic crackdown NEW GUIDELINES on dealing with stalking will be published by the UK Crown Prosecution Service later, aimed at people who use the internet to target others.

ABOUT 1,300 fake Olympic T-shirts and baseball caps have been seized in a crackdown on counterfeiters before the London Games in two years’ time. The items, which had the 2012 trademark and Olympic rings symbol on, were found at a souvenir shop in Westminster in the centre of the capital. They were believed to be the first of their kind spotted in the area, trading standards officers said. They added that due to the size of the haul, it was likely the goods would have been distributed elsewhere. The items had been displayed in the shop, with Tshirts being sold two for £10 or £5.99 each. The trader in Buckingham Palace Road could now be prosecuted, facing jail or an unlimited fine if convicted. We hope the actions taken...against this particular retailer will serve as a strong

warning to others. Officials were alerted by Games organiser Locog, which relies on its brand to raise sponsorship and licensing towards the £2bn cost of staging the Games. A Westminster Council spokeswoman said: “We are regularly on the lookout for fake goods, for example designer labels, but this is the first misuse of the Olympic logo we have seen.”

24 September 2010 - 30 September 2010

The council said the seizure showed that a major counterfeiting operation had already begun. Spokesman Brian Connell said: “In less than two years’ time the eyes of the world will be on London when the Olympics come to the UK. “In the run up to and during the 2012 Games we will be on the lookout for counterfeit Olympic clothing and merchandise on sale in

Westminster.” He said they were “simply poor imitations of the real thing and serve to only exploit real sports fans”. Mr Connell added: “We hope the actions taken... against this particular retailer will serve as a strong warning to others who may be thinking they can make some easy money by buying and selling illicit Olympic merchandise.”

More than a million women and 900,000 men are stalked every year, but that does not include any so called cyberstalking or on-line harassment. Police say cyber-stalking is unwanted communication that causes fear, alarm or distress and can be sent by email, social networking sites or text messages. A leading psychologist says many people harass by accident because they don’t know how to behave on-line, so more guidelines and a code of conduct need to be intro-

duced. Dr Emma Short from the University of Bedfordshire said: “It’s not just about legislation to protect others, it’s about becoming personally aware about our security online. “We are very careful about how we behave off-line, we keep safe and we avoid the dangerous parts of town. “But online people are much less certain of who is watching them, who can see what they are putting our there and how vulnerable that might make them.” Alongside the CPS’s new legal guidance, a new research project is being launched to discover the full extent of the cyber-stalking problem. But those involved with the project say it is also up to individuals to ensure they are adequately protected online.

Julie is in London for 'Eat Pray Love' show IN LONDON for the premiere of her latest film Eat Pray Love, Julia Roberts has said adapting the bestselling book was like making the author a remarkable home video. The film is based on American writer Elizabeth Gilbert novel about her struggle to find fulfilment. Dissatisfied with her seemingly perfect life, Gilbert played by Roberts - ditches both her husband and her job to travel the world on a quest for self-discovery. Her journey takes her to Italy (where she eats a lot), to India (where she prays a lot) and to Bali (where she falls in love just once). It has been on the New York Times bestseller list for an astonishing 187 weeks and Roberts said that the film had a lot to live up to.

“We were just honoured to have the responsibility of trying to turn her so loved book into something people would enjoy just as much,” she said. It is directed by Ryan Murphy - the man behind the television series Glee - and he insisted on filming it chronologically, because he wanted Roberts’ character to grow organically. Murphy said: “That was the one big demand that I had because I thought it was important for Julia and I to keep track of where we were in the journey.” Roberts recently took some time out to concentrate on her family - she has three young children - but was lucky enough to be able to take them away with her on location - after all the film’s message is all about balance. She said: “I have the luxury of not doing work or the luxury of asking a job to really shape itself around something that might have to do with my family so I’m really

fortunate in that way.” During the production Roberts and Gilbert became close and the two are now friends. Apparently Gilbert didn’t take any pictures of her transformative journey and is thrilled to bits that her life story has been immortalized on the silver screen. “Now she feels like she has this remarkable home movie

and she thinks it’s a really favourable adaptation of her experience,” Roberts said. Not everyone’s happy though, the Italians are up in arms about the stereotypical “pasta and passion” portrayal of their country. But Murphy said there is only so much of a country you can show in a two hour film. “I think the film is a view of Italy from a very

Americanised point of view and it’s shorthand storytelling but the thing I say is ‘yes we show people eating pizza’, that’s a scene in the book we’re adapting the book,” he said. “Yes we show a woman getting her butt slapped by an Italian man - Liz witnessed it in the book. “But what we do, which I think Liz Gilbert also does quite well in the book, is show

a different view of Italian men as being wonderful fathers and not so much the sexist folk they have been depicted as in some other movies. “So I tried but you can’t win when you adapt a book because people have so many preconceived notions of what it should be. “I asked them ‘what I show of Italy, what would make you happy?’ and they couldn’t really answer that.”

Big drop in UK-bound immigrants at Calais The long-running battle to stop illegal immigrants reaching the UK may finally be turning in Britain’s favour. The number of UK-bound immigrants caught by border patrols in Calais has fallen by 80% in the last year, according to Home Office figures. Ministers claim the drop reflects the concerted effort of UK and French authorities to stop illegal immigration through the port. A year ago today, French police moved in to demolish the largest camp in the town, known as ‘the jungle’. The camp was thought to be home to around 1,000 immigrants, including many who were under 18. We have had complaints from migrants that they are being arrested repeatedly, sometimes several times in the same day. The dramatic operation was covered live by the world’s media, and signalled the begin-

Page 16

ning of a year of relentless police crack-downs on similar camps in Calais. Other camps were also targeted along the north coast of France. Activist groups, such as ‘No Borders’, have described regular morning raids on tented settlements and squats throughout the past 12 months. Many immigrants have been left without shelter or possessions. Home Office figures show that between October 2008 and September 2009 the number caught trying to cross the channel illegally from Calais was 24,201. In the year since the crackdown began, that number has fallen to 5,369. The figures include detections by both the French and UK authorities, who both undertake work to uncover illegals at the port. The UN High Commission for Refugees believes the pressure from authorities has led many migrants to give up trying to get to the UK.

Instead they are opting for voluntary repatriation or heading to other countries further north, such as Denmark and Sweden. The UNHCR now estimates that the number of migrants based in Calais has fallen to around 150, and the number along the north coast is down to around 500. The UNHCR’s Calais representative, William Spindler, said: “We have had complaints from migrants that they are being arrested repeatedly, sometimes several times in the same day. “We understand the reasons police are cracking down on these sites, but we consider that this needs to be done in a way that respects peoples’ rights.” However, the decrease in migrants and arrests has been welcomed by Immigration Minister Damian Green. He said: “I’m not complacent, we must maintain our stringent border checks and I am committed to continuing to work with the French Government to build on this success.”

Aussie beach rules

BEACHGOERS at a popular Australian beauty spot could soon be fined for flying kites, using the wrong umbrellas and digging holes in the sand. Council chiefs in Cottesloe, in the western suburbs of Perth, have been criticised for “petty meddling” because they want to ban a total of 100 activities at the local beach. Some of the more bizarre curbs would make it illegal to have toy cars on the beach or put up an umbrella bigger than three square metres, according to reports. Obstructing steps and pathways, dropping cigarette butts and wasting water by leaving taps running could also be barred. Fines would range from about £60 to £300. Many

of the restrictions are being introduced for safety reasons because of the beach’s growing popularity. A council report said the existing rules were “inadequate to deal with certain demands and situations”. The plans have sparked mixed reactions from locals, with some saying the new curbs were too strict and others in favour. One visitor to an Australian news website said: “This is petty government meddling gone mad.” Visitors to Bondi beach, on the outskirts of Sydney, also have to comply with restrictions including bans on ball games, while kite flying is restricted to a festival held once a year.

New Guinness World Records THE NEW Guinness World Records book has been unveiled - featuring everything from Smurfs and elderly Salsa dancers to creatures great and small. Britain enjoyed another bumper year of landmark accomplishments, boasting entries in the 2011 edition including the planet’s tiniest cow and the heaviest-ever gooseberry. Measuring just 33in, 11year-old Swallow the cow has overcome her limited stature to have nine calves at Pike End Farm in Rishworth, West Yorkshire. And Nottingham’s Stephen Parkes achieved his place in the hallowed pages of the new book through his world’s largest collection of Smurf memorabilia - numbering 1,061 items. The 44-year-old, whose pieces include a 10ft Papa Smurf statue, said: “It’s great to get in the book, although I think I’m going to get a fair amount of stick from friends when they see the photos.” Grandmother Paddy Jones, from Stourbridge, scooped the title of the oldest acrobatic Salsa dancer on earth. And another homegrown

Page 18

record was the 2.19oz gooseberry produced in North Yorkshire, coming in at eight times the fruit’s normal weight. Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said: “The Brits are renowned the world over for their eccentricity, and we’ve proved that this year. “We’ve got record-breaking soap collectors, body piercers, belchers and weightlifters who use only their tongues. “But not all our Brits have odd talents. Look at inspirational record holders such as Sir Tom Jones, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Simon Cowell, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Richard Noble, even Doctor Who - all world-beaters. “Britain has a lot to be proud of.” Elsewhere, the US claimed the records for both the tallest and the shortest dogs - with the two canines in question meeting at an event to launch the annual new book in New York. Five-year-old great dane ‘Giant George’ measures 43in from ground to shoulder, compared to four-yearold chihuahua ‘Boo Boo’ at just four inches.

The car industry slams Witehall immigration cap THE UK motor industry has criticised the Government’s cap on immigration, saying it will harm the sector and make Britain less competitive. It said it was “very concerned” with the proposals to include intra-company transfers in the migration limits. This is where staff overseas come to Britain to work for the same firm. An interim cap on non-EU immigrants was introduced in July, which will limit workers to 24,100 from June 2010 to April 2011. But the Government plans to make it permanent. The criticism was made by Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). He has written a letter to the immigration minister Damian Green outlining his concerns. His comments echo those of Business Secretary Vince Cable, who earlier this week said the cap on immigration was harming British industry. Mr Everitt’s remarks came

as new figures from the SMMT indicated a strong recovery in the UK car and commercial vehicle industry. Limiting intra-company transfers...will harm the operations of global companies, such as are represented in the UK automotive sector. Paul Everitt, head of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Car output grew 37% in August to 77,882 while commercial vehicle making rose 22%, to 5,885. Overall, the total of 83,767 vehicles is 36% up for the month, and 41% for the year.

Mr Everitt said: “Whilst we understand the drivers behind UK Government’s proposed migration limits, we call for the removal of intra-company transfers from these limits. “Through knowledge sharing and skills transfer, such individuals make a significant contribution to the competitiveness of our sector and the national economy more generally.” He added: “We are also concerned that the inclusion of intra-company transfers will be replicated by other non-EU countries.”

And he claimed the inclusion would “restrict the opportunities for UK-based employees to work within companies outside the EU”. Mr Everitt went on: “Limiting intra-company transfers through caps, lottery allocations or more stringent eligibility requirements will harm the operations of global companies, such as are represented in the UK automotive sector.” They would “negatively impact on UK competitiveness and the attractiveness of the UK as a place to do business”, he claimed.

That fight for equal pay all began in Dagenham A NEW film describes how a strike by a group of female factory workers more than 40 years ago paved the way for equal pay. Made In Dagenham charts the story of 187 machinists from Ford in Dagenham who brought production to a standstill in a row over unfair wages. That was in 1968 and despite the fact that their actions helped spearhead the 1970 Equal Pay Act, their story has remained largely untold. Jaime Winstone, who stars in the film, said: “I was bliss-

fully unaware about what these women had done and how far they had taken it. “I mean women going to Parliament in the 1960s - it was shocking. And all these years later we are still struggling for equal pay.” The film is by Calendar Girls director Nigel Cole and stars Sally Hawkins, Bob Hoskins and Rosamund Pike. It focuses on a group of feisty working class women and their struggles - both at home and work - to achieve recognition for their contributions. Producer Stephen Woolley says that the Dagenham Strike was one of the defining political moments of that era.

He said: “This story of the women’s strike was so extraordinary because they actually achieved something. They achieved equal pay for women in Britain and across Europe. “It was a big event. It was not just a tiny little strike. It was 187 women bringing down 55,000 men - putting them out of work. It was a significant leap forward for women.” Sheila Douglass was among the original strikers and it is only since the film that she has realised the impact that her actions have had on future generations of women. She said: “It wasn’t politically motivated. We felt worth more than the com-

pany thought we were worth and we thought the only way we are going to get it is if we fight for it and that’s why we had meetings and eventually voted to fight.” Vera Sime was on the picket line but said that it is only now that her family and friends have appreciated her achievements. She said: “I feel different. I feel stronger. It’s a good feeling. People come up to you and you feel embarrassed.” Despite their victory, the equal pay battle rumbles on. The latest government figures show that on average men earn nearly a quarter more than women.

The Lowe-down on a classic golf highlight! JOHN LOWE’S magnificent Golf Classic, staged at Amarilla Golf, last Saturday raised more than 5,000 euros for Captain Michael Baker’s named charity, AMATE. The former world champion darts star attracted great support for his event, with all 18 tees sponsored for the stableford competition. Such is John’s popularity that the competition was over-subscribed, 25 four-man teams actually lining up for the shotgun start. Together with match sponsorship, plus the putting green and two other donations of 100 euros each from the private sector, it totalled a huge 2,200 euros. “We had a fantastic day,” said Michael. “The golf was excellent and the entertainment afterwards was second to none. “More than 159 people attended the barbecue, and

we enjoyed the wonderful voice of Patricia, who entertained with a mixture of Spanish and English songs.” John Lowe conducted the auction, and he couldn’t go far wrong because he had a host of magnificent items on offer, all kindly donated. And with two 50-euro donations, that raised over 1,400 euros. There was also a superb display of horsemanship, combined with flamenco dancing, which had the audience spellbound. Oh yes, there was some golf played as well! Main winners were the team comprising Paul Ferraby, Steve Johnson, Andres De La Hera and David Davidson, who scored 118 points. And Tony McDonald, at the ripe old age of 63, scored his first hole in one, which came at the 18th. That magnificent achievement also secured him the Nearest the Pin prize. Tim Chambers won the men’s Longest Drive competition, with Janet Kay triumphant for the women. Paul Dwyer won the two’s club draw.

Keep-fit class is a doddle for dogs THE NEW dog/owner fitness club, launched jointly by Aktiontier dog refuge’s Karen Clack and Danni, was deemed a super success, with the owners each working off some 300 calories on the 5km walk, and the dogs simply enjoying their walk in the sun. A delighted Karen, who walked the walk, said: “We attracted lots of interest and handed out many leaflets on the way, giving people info on our dog refuge, at Accion Del Sol in Granadilla.” The follow-up meeting takes place on Thursday (30th Sept) behind the Adeje Grand Hotel in Fanabe, and there will be lots of fun games with the dogs. Danni plans to introduce hoops, balls and cones to liven up proceedings, which are expected to be “chaotic”. Refuge opening hours We are open Tuesday to Sunday, from 2-5pm. Outside of these times, you must make an appointment with Eugenio to facilitate smooth running of the refuge. Thank you. We are situated in Atogo, directly up from the airport, next door to the Ostrich Farm, which is well-signposted. Our thanks to … Andrea and all the staff at Studio 5 Hair Salon, CC Balmahur, Los Cristianos, who have so far raised 6,800 euros for us by selling second-hand books and clothes. On top of this, 12 dogs have been sterilised, and funds are awaiting for another operation, again from their efforts. We cannot thank you enough. Second shop imminent Our second shop is about ready to open its doors. We just need to get a couple of bits of paper and we’re there! It is situated in San Eugenio, opposite La Niña Hotel, near Amanda’s Bar, and we hope to target the tourist market with books, beach items and other holiday essentials. We still need racking and shelving, however, so please call Debbie on the number below if you can help. We also need volunteers to work in both the new shop and our shop in Silencio.

Not that Marion, who runs the refuge, is complaining because she loved every minute of walk as well, especially as it raised awareness of

Aktiontier. Please contact Danni Bryne (619 008 035) or Karen (687 905 511) for more information. Everyone is welcome to join in.

Karen added: “A big thank you to Danni from the owners (and dogs). I never knew exercise could be so much fun.”

On Sunday, 24th October, we are putting on a fun day at Chipeque Pool Bar, Los Cristianos. Watch this space for details. Revised adoption procedures A minimum 50-euro donation for an adopted male dog, and 75 euros for a female, is now required by Live Arico. This is paid direct to Hospivet

Sur on collection of your new pet, which will be chipped, neutered, vaccinated and wormed. South Tenerife Rescue Centre We have now sold 511sqm of land up to now, making a total of 2,555 euros. At just five euros, you will receive a certificate from Live Arico for now, and your name, address and number of square metres purchased will be on a Roll of Honour at the new refuge. Live Arico Shop news (in association with Tenerife Nursing and Care) The shop is on the frontline of Coral Mar, at ground level, next door to the Coral Bar. This makes life far easier for everyone: cars unloading can park right outside, and our elderly and disabled customers no longer have to negotiate the stairs. We have a fantastic range of hand-made cards for all occasions, decorated beautifully and costing from two euros. We are also grateful for items of furniture as we are

working in conjunction with Fish for Furniture, at Los Abrigos, and Idea, in Adeje. Call Rick to arrange pick-ups. Any donations of cat and dog food at the shop are most welcome. Through popular demand, the shop is now open at the following times: Mon-Fri: 104pm. Sat: 10-2. Sunday: Closed. The shop will also be open when there’s an event on in Coral Mar Square, Live Arico hot lines For any questions about the shop, the dogs or Live Arico, or if you would like to make a donation and need somebody to pick it up, call Debbie on the number below. Tonight one of QI’s infrequent female panellists, Sue Perkins, fresh from dusting the fl our off her dainty hands in The Great British Bake Off, joins the boys. She’s sparky and funny and will be more than capable of holding her own with those noisy, competitive lads.

SATURDAY

QI, 8:30pm - 9:00pm, BBC1

Pudgy, curly-haired Seth Rogen plays a harmless pothead who impregnates Katherine Heigl’s media career girl during a drunken one-night stand. Prompted by the impending birth to give the relationship a go, our odd couple learns lessons about responsibility and life in general, but to hilarious rather than schmaltzy effect. Thanks to quality, near-the-knuckle repartee and believable chemistry between Rogen and Grey’s Anatomy star Heigl, Knocked Up proves that hit comedy doesn’t have to dumb down for its demographic.

Undercover Boss 8:00pm - 9:00pm, Channel 4 The programme revisits Park Resorts, one of Britain’s largest caravan-holiday firms, two years on from an episode that saw company director Andy Edge secretly work alongside front-line staff for a fortnight, cleaning caravans, working in the kitchens and entertaining holiday-makers. When the cameras return, they discover whether the lessons he learned during the original programme have enabled him to improve the fortunes of his business.

MasterChef: The Professionals, 8:30pm - 9:00pm, BBC2 New series. Sous chef Monica Galetti joins Michel Roux Jr and Gregg Wallace on the judging panel in the culinary challenge as four contestants face an elimination round. The three best cooks are then shown how to prepare cardoon gratin with bone marrow, before being given just 60 minutes to re-create the dish. After assessing their efforts, the judges select two chefs to go through to the quarter-final.

Harry & Paul 9:30pm - 10:00pm, BBC2 New series. Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse return with another collection of comic creations, including ageing rockers the Silver-Haired Beatles, corrupt Italian politician Gabbatore, dysfunctional south London family the Benefits, and shifty modelling agent Mike Noughts. The Dragons’ Den panel also returns to run the rule over a new pudding supplement.

Live UEFA Champions League 7:30pm - 10:00pm, ITV1 Valencia v Manchester United Antonio Valencia’s season was brought to an end in the Rangers tie after an unlucky tackle from Kirk Broadfoot left him with a serious ankle injury, but even without this setback, the Reds never looked likely to break through a dogged Rangers defence, and eyebrows were raised by Ferguson’s decision to make 10 changes from the side who drew 3-3 with Everton just days earlier. By contrast, the 4-0 demolition of Turkey’s Bursaspor by the Murciélagos proved that despite the departure of star players such as David Villa, they are still a force to be reckoned with.

The Hairy Bikers: Mums Know Best 8:30pm - 9:00pm, BBC2 Si King and Dave Myers celebrate the traditional British picnic, meeting mothers who consider themselves experts at creating home-cooked delicacies for enjoying in the great outdoors. The pair reveal their own take on the Scotch egg, and demonstrate a complex Victoria sponge recipe. Plus, a Birmingham mum prepares a selection of spicy Indian treats.

JOE ‘IN MY OPINION’ FERGUSON Weekly Update Email: joe.ferguson@canarianweekly.com

Everybody needs good neighbours… I LOVED the TV show Neighbours at the height of its popularity in the late Eighties. We would all sing along with the theme tune, no matter what the weather or mood was. I have not watched the show now for ten years, but I can’t get the tune of my head. I have been in the family house now for nearly three months. In the old place I lived in for three years I had my friends, obviously, but the only people in our building I had any contact with were Jane and Bernard, our neighbours. Still in contact I’m happy to say. So it’s always strange meeting people in your new surroundings. I am on record as not being a people person really, but I’m finding it easier as time goes by. It has been made even easier by the new people we are meeting now. Richard and Katie, just around the corner, are my type of people. Forever smiling, and Richard is always there to wish me good morning as I set off work. Just before we moved in, Sonya, the lovely lady who found the property for us, mentioned that there was a brilliant lady called Trixie next door to us. With the stories being told, I could not believe someone could be that happy all of the time! So, after a few days of bedding into the new abode, I heard the sound of the door opening from Trixie’s place. I knew, sooner or later, I would have to face up to my panic of meeting new people, so I moved to our front door with my heart in my mouth, having to introduce myself. As I walked what was only three feet, I thought I was going to faint - and we looked each other in the eye.

Page 36

At this point I felt, and I’m sure Trixie also thought, we were taking part in a showdown from an old western movie. As two cowboys faced each other, wondering who would make the first move. We both just said at the same time: “Heeelllllllooooooooo”. It really did sound as long as that. So with that out of the way, she says: “I believe you are the gentleman from the radio.” I replied: “It’s obvious you

have never listened to my show as I am NOT a gentleman.” In a flash, Trixie said: “You will find I am NO lady, either!”. We just laughed for a minute and that was it. There can be a feeling when you meet someone that you have a friend for life. And I can honestly say that my family and I have. Even I could not repeat the conversations we have. But my God, the laughs we have. I am interested in listening

to people and, sometimes, I go into interview mode, always asking question. That’s not because I want gossip, but because I am seriously interested. And with Trixie, it’s like listening to the best audio book in the world. Our interests are exactly the same, especially regarding history. And to listen to a lady so switched on with intellect is simply an honour. She comes from a theatrical back-

ground and I want to be on stage with her soon! Like us all here in Tenerife, she enjoys a little drink now and then, and we are now making a habit of watching the sun going down from each other’s balcony. Dividing our places is a window arch, which I can open and nine times out of ten, you can find us chatting at any time of the day or night. We are both night owls and it’s getting like the end of a

Waltons’ episode as we wish each other goodnight at three in the morning. I much prefer being on her balcony as she seems to have imported the entire Chelsea flower show to Tenerife. It smells lovely as we enjoy a beer. But with all the nice things, there has to be a downside. I have now called her Catwoman, but that’s not because she has cats but because, like the animal, she is forever bringing gifts for my son. Any time my doorbell goes, I know it’s Trixie. “Hello darling, I was just walking through town and I noticed how good this would look on Taylor.” And she’s right, because everything she gets looks fantastic. This woman has my son kitted out for the first 18 years of his life! I swear one day she will ask me to escort her to the car park, and I will be greeted with the words: “I saw this Range Rover and thought you would all look good in it!” Maybe that dream will come true one day. But the kindness of this lady just makes me and my family smile. I know that if we are not in the house, Trixie will make sure the place is safe. I can see her with warpaint over her face, night-vision goggles and dressed in army gear. Maybe that’s just another one of my dreams. Like everyone, we like to be complimented, and I am sure this wonderful human being, whom I have just met, would not mind if, through these pages, I can say thank you. Thank you for the war movies we both know and love, and for the clothes and toys you have kindly given my son. But most of all, Trixie, for the interest and genuine feelings you have towards my family. I hope for many laughs and many beers for years to come xxx. Joe

Parents pay a World’s greatest high price for kids’ gadgets wind farm opens PARENTS spend around £500 a year on technology for children, with the bill for seven-year-olds averaging £760, research says. The findings, from price comparison site Kelkoo, show that 91% of kids in the UK between the ages of five and 16 own sophisticated gadgets including games, mobiles and laptops. More than one in 10 children has a smartphone, while 7% have a netbook and 3% even own a tablet PC. But, despite this huge spending and internet availability, one in five parents say they never monitor their children’s activity while they are on the web. While nine out of 10 parents accept that technology now forms a vital part of a child’s development, it also gives some of them cause for concern because of fears about

theft and increasing peer pressure. The reason why seven-yearolds do best financially is because, Kelkoo says, that is the age when most children take the step up from infant to junior school, becoming increasingly self-aware and able to articulate exactly what they want.

THE WORLD’S biggest offshore wind farm has opened off the coast of Kent and is now generating power.

Swedish energy giant Vattenfall says the 100 turbines should provide enough electricity for up to 240,000 homes. Energy Secretary Chris Huhne said: “We are determined to create more of our own energy within the United Kingdom. “This will make us safe from the shocks we have seen in the past in the oil markets and gas markets. “That is good news for consumers and businesses.” Construction work at the £780m wind farm, which lies seven miles (12km) off Foreness Point in Thanet, began two years ago. The 380ft (115m) tall turbines are spread over an area of more than 22 square miles (35 sq km) and are visible from the shore on a clear day.

The farm will boost the country’s capacity to generate wind power by 30%, a big step towards reaching the tough EU targets. There are now around 250 wind farms operating in the UK, 13 of them offshore, with just under 3,000 turbines in all. But overall Britain is still lagging behind European neighbours in this emerging industry - the reason why the Thanet farm has

had to use Danish-built turbines and is run by a Swedish firm. Vattenfall also owns the 30turbine Kentish Flats wind farm, off Herne Bay, which was one of the UK’s first such projects when it opened five years ago. Environmental campaigners have urged the Government to invest more in renewable energy. Craig Bennett, the campaigns and policy director for

Friends of the Earth, said the Thanet wind farm was an “important stride forward” but added the UK’s record on renewable energy was “dismal”. It will be improved considerably, however, with the completion of an even bigger wind farm nearby. When finished the London Array site in the outer Thames estuary will have 341 turbines with the potential to power 750,000 homes.

Tenerife takes DIY to another level The International Conference and Exhibition Centre in Santa Cruz de Tenerife from 18th to 21st November will host the seventh edition of the show ‘Construye 2010’, the largest trade fair of construction, Canarian equipment and real estate.

Page 38

The exhibition will host a market opportunity to sell any stock of building materials, DIY and / or hardware in general at bargain prices. The Fair was presented last week to the media by the president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, and the principal of island Innovation and Project Development, Juan Antonio Nunez, Fepeco president, Antonio Plasencia, and Jorge Roman. ‘Construye 2010’ , will fea-

ture free admission and be open to the public from 10.00 to 20.00, it includes 12,000 square meter exhibition space and 1,000 square feet outdoors. The event is not only meant to be a must for building professionals, but has established itself as a meeting place for the general public and, therefore, provide a broad overview of all the alternatives and solutions that the DIY enthusiast can find when performing new works or renovation, when

acquiring a home and a unique opportunity to publicise accumulated housing stock. President of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior commented that the event always ‘awakened’ great interest in the sector. Meanwhile, Antonio Plasencia, acknowledged the difficulties facing the construction industry but the event has already received confirmation by more than 60 companies.

There will also be some property bargains at the exhibition, being offered at very competitive prices. So it encourages all people interested in buying a house to visit the exhibition because “prices are very tight, mortgage rates are very low and, above all, because there are few days to be eligible for the deduction for home purchases in the tax income, regardless of income buyer, which can save many thousands of euros for buyers. “

The novelty of this exhibition is that there will be building materials for sale through general sale, auctions and promotions. Finally, the director of the Fair, Jorge Roman, emphasized that the seventh edition of ‘Construye’, which has been “completely revamped” aims to adapt to the actual situation of the sector, hence the aim is to help revive the sector reaching 14,000 potential customers.

DAVID HUDGELL Getting to the root of your gardening problems! Email: David.hudgell@canarianweekly.com

Japanese gardening Harvest time is a World Cup event IT’S A GOOD apple harvest this year, say growers, slightly down on early expectations in some parts of the country, mainly due to lack of rainfall. Cox’s Orange Pippin – which some reckon is the finest apple on the planet - have a lovely red blush thanks to the sunshine in September.

Other varieties in season now include Crispin (Oct-Feb), Egremont Russet (Sept-Nov), Gala (Oct-Jan), Golden Delicious (yes, they do grow in

the UK. Why buy French when you can buy English? Season: Oct-Feb), Idared (Oct-March), Jonagold (Oct-March), Jonathan (Oct-Jan), Jupiter (Oct-Jan), Kidd’s Orange (OctJan), Lord Lambourne (SeptNov), Spartan (Oct-Feb). Pears are just beginning to ripen; Beurre du Comice is first to arrive, lovely, honeyed, juicy – a luscious, curvy pear, followed by Conference - elongated, sweet, juicy but more restrained than Comice. Concorde is a cross between the two – firmer than Comice and with more flavour than Conference – and it’s around from now until after Christmas. If you like Williams, you’ve just missed the English season but they’ll be back next September.

DEBUT Chelsea Flower Show 2010 show garden designer Jonathan Denby, Andy Sturgeon and James Towillis, join nine other top landscape artists from across the globe at a first ever Gardening World Cup being held in Nagasaki, Japan next month (October). Set in the palace grounds of Huis Ten Bosch, an astonishing replica of a Dutch town the size of Monaco, the organisers are expecting the event to rival the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show. It is being heavily promoted in Japan through a massive TV advertising campaign and budget of $5m. The location is near to the home of Kazuyuki Ishihara, Japan’s leading garden designer and Chelsea show garden gold medalist, who conceived the idea of the competition and its theme

of gardening for world peace. The judging panel includes two Royal Horticultural Show judges, Bob Sweet and Kate Hillier, and other international judges Sam Lemheney (Philadelphia Flower Show) and Wei Har Wong (Singapore Flower Festival). The garden Jonathan is building in Japan is inspired by two Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows in his Yewbarrow House potting shed at Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria. The windows were rescued from a church in Heywood, Lancashire and commemorate 14 men who died in the First World War. One of the 14 men is Frank Taylor and this garden is a memorial to him. Seventeen year old Frank joined the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1915. Under-aged and unwell he was sent to France to fight. He died within eleven days of facing the enemy for the first time in the Battle of the Somme in an attack on the fortress village of Guillemont. This attack was described by soldier, military historian and

24 September 2010 - 30 September 2010

leading inter-war theorist B. H. Liddell Hart as a ‘shambles of horror’. In the five month battle the two armies fired 30 million shells at each other leaving a million casualties in the seven square miles that lay between them. 88,000 British soldiers were killed for every mile gained in the advance. “My link to Frank’s story is through the beautiful stained glass memorial in my potting shed”, says Jonathan Denby. “His is a poignant story about a pointless battle in which a million lives were lost and for no decisive outcome. My design for a garden of quiet contemplation inspired by Frank fits very well with the theme of world peace.” A key feature of the garden is a two-metre high statue of an angel found in one of the stained glass windows. On either side of the angel is an olive tree in an urn. The branches of the olive trees represent peace and at their base are red flowers symbolising the poetic line, “even the olives are bleeding”.

The garden is a place of contemplation and peace where the only colours are white and green, representing peace, with splashes of red, signifying spilled blood. The garden is divided by a wide path, at the end of which is a loggia providing shelter for the statue and a viewing point for the garden. Enclosed on three sides, the flower garden is a place of restful, cloistered tranquility. This competition event will see 12 gardeners compete to build a garden on the subject of world peace. In addition to the UK and Japanese entrants, designers from the USA, Canada, Holland, France, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand will also compete. An orientation visit took place in mid June with the designers spending time exploring the site and local plant nurseries as well as making a visit to the Atomic Memorial Park in Nagasaki. Details of the gardens can be seen via the organisers website: www.gardeningworldcup.jp/news/004.html

I FIND gardening here at times very challenging as the seasons are so different to the UK. Some plants are brilliant and withstand the heat, wind, drought and the occasional down-pour; others seem not to fair that well. We are now technically in the Autumn season which will lead after September to cooler nights, and lower temperatures, albeit similar to an English summer’s day even though we’re in October! I find now is ideal for planting up hanging baskets, as they brighten up any patio or balcony plus at this time of year it doesn’t matter if you forget to water one day – not like in the height of summer when it will just shrivel up and die. Choose three plant types

that you like the colour and texture of, plus one of something that will look interesting and add height. One of your plant choices could be trailing, for example pansy or even a tiny ivy. Line your basket with either a professional liner or some moss, to the place where you want your first plants to go. Place a selection of your plants, (especially the trailing ones at this level, ensuring their roots are covered by the moss) then fill with soil. Continue to fill the sides of your basket with moss, until the top edge of the basket then plant the remainder of your plants in the top with the taller plant in the middle, to add a point of interest. Really pack your plants in to make a colourful display, water well before hanging in its finished space and then just enjoy, ensuring that you water it on a regular basis. Ideally after the sun has gone down.

CARL PATTISON from Robot, answers your hair questions Email: carl.pattison@canarianweekly.com

Hey you guys! IT’S not just the women out there who need to maybe have a change because sometimes, you guys get stuck in a rut, too. Yes, I know we live in Tenerife. It gets hot, and what might work in the UK won’t necessarily work here, but there are lots of options open to you. I’ve tried to show a variation of styles, all dependant on what works for you, your time factor, jobs, etc, so don’t think that styling options for men aren’t flexible as well. 1.

Pic 1: Great for flexibility. Can be toned down for work, or funked up for weekends. Works well on fine-to-mediumtexture hair. Don’t try this on curly unless you’re going to use the hair irons daily. The colours are just enough to make a statement without being too much Pic 2: Skater style Not too good if you’re the office type, but if you want to wear your hair a little longer, then this is a great length to be controllable still. If cut well, a quick toweldry and some wax is all that’s needed for you to be ready to

2.

go. Not to be over-styled, it’s great on straight-to-slightlywavy hair. Pic 3: This is the easiest of all to style. It’s great for work, worn flatter or ruffled up, depending on your career. Works well on fine-to-thick hair, although thick hair will need texturising and extreme thinning out. Takes just minutes to style with wax or paste. A good men’s haircut shouldn’t be rushed. Ten minutes with the clippers is great if you don’t have time to groom yourself. But if you’re having your hair cut in a salon, then expect to be asked about what you want, what time you have for styling and how regularly 3.

you want to have it cut. Don’t expect to be able to choose a new style and have it still looking good two months later. You will need to keep up with having your hair cut, say every 4-6 weeks to maintain the shape. Nowadays, most styles require some sort of product waxes, gels, pastes etc. With the help of your stylists, they can guide you through these products to find what works best for your hair. If you see something that appeals in a magazine or photograph, take it along with you because it really does help in our job to keep you happy. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about any aspect of your visit. Times have changed, though, so don’t expect us to talk about football, holidays or going out tonight! Caring for your image isn’t something you should shy away from. We are in 2010, things have moved on and we are here to look after your hair, be it the cut, the colour or simply a question on styling products.

DEAR CHRISTINE Your resident Agony Aunt Email: agony.aunt@canarianweekly.com

Dear Christine, While my two best friends went to university in the UK, I stayed here after school and found an office job. Now every holiday when they come home, I’m desperate to avoid them. Most times when they invite me some place, I come up with an excuse and stay at home. I feel so inferior to them. Claire

Dear Claire, I’m afraid that feeling sorry for yourself and hiding away accomplishes nothing! If you want to perpetuate your self-sabotaging beliefs, just keep doing what you’ve been doing. But you don’t want to, do you? That’s why you wrote in. It shows you’re into solving problems, and that’s one of the best skills of all. To adjust your problematic thinking, you need first to stop comparing yourself with others! There’s always going to be someone smarter than you, and someone not as bright. Not that I’m saying your friends are smarter - they just made a different decision than you. Anyway, if they were your best friends at school, you must have felt equal to them then. It’s worth remembering that these two girls would always have seen you as someone they wanted to hang around with; someone interesting with plenty of good characteristics. And clearly, they still see you that way. Try to accept that some people like and respect you, regardless of how you’ve been feeling. However, if you continue being silent, withdrawn, bitter or

grumpy, sooner or later they’re going to start staying away from you. If, on the other hand, you’re cheerful, friendly and interested in them, they’re sure to stay friendly. Being a friend isn’t about who you are so much as what you do. Be a good friend, Claire! After all, you were well capable of that before, or you wouldn’t have had friends in the first place. Until you see these girls again, throw yourself into your career and do the best you can. Make new friends, take up new pastimes and make good use of all Tenerife has to offer. It’s your life and it’s up to you to make it the best you can. Christine Dear Christine, I have been left a letter by my wife, which was stood in front of our wedding photograph. In it, she said our marriage was over and that she was going back to the UK, leaving me with our three young daughters, aged 2, 4 and 5. Apparently, our marriage was boring and a lie. I feel utterly devastated that she could do this to me and the girls. We had some tough times, but always came through them, and for her to leave like this is so absurd. Why didn’t she just tell me she was unhappy? We might have been able to save the marriage. I’m so run down and upset. I need your advice as I don’t know where to go from here. Ant

Dear Ant, It is terribly sad when a relationship comes to an end, especially when you

didn’t see it coming. Your wife really should have let you know how she was feeling before taking this option. But maybe it was the only way she could tell you without getting very upset and feeling horrible about what she was doing. Now you need to sit the girls down and tell them what has happened. Explain that although mum still loves them, she has gone away for a while. You don’t have to go into details until they are older and ask specific questions. In the meantime, their mother will, hopefully, be in touch to arrange seeing them whenever she can even letters you can read out to them would be better than nothing. If a year goes by and she hasn’t been in touch, it’s really best to be up-front with the girls and tell them she might not be coming back at all. Assure them, though, that you’ll never leave them, and say they can always come to you with their problems. Make it clear that they are the most important people in the world to you. Be aware that it will only hurt them if you criticise their mum in any way. It’s also important that you think about gradually getting yourself back to normal. This will probably involve working out a timetable for everything to do with the girls and your job. If you have relatives in Tenerife, get as much help and support from them as you can, and from your friends, too, if possible. You have to be healthy and strong for your girls, because they are what’s important now and you should focus on them. As for you, I’m sure that time will heal. Indeed, you never know what’s around the corner and who you may meet. I sincerely wish you all the very best, Christine Christine Craggs-Hinton is the author of 17 self-help books, including ‘How to Lower your Blood Pressure’ and ‘Overcoming Anorexia’. Her books are available from all good UK bookshops as well as ‘The Paper Shop’, Apolo Centre and ‘Bookswop’, Edificio Cristianos 1, both of which are in Los Cristianos.

VAL SAINSBURY Keeping her finger on the pulse Email: val.sainsbury@canarianweekly.com

THE fitter they are, the smarter they are and these kids are aged only nine and ten. At least, that’s the findings of a study carried out by US scientists, who say there is definitely an association between physical fitness and brains of youngsters in this age bracket. Those who are fitter tend to have a bigger hippocampus, which is the part of the brain responsible for forming new memories, and they perform better in memory tests. Researchers used magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI), to measure the relative size of specific structures in the brains of 49 child subjects. Art Kramer, University of Illinois psychology professor, said: “This is the first study I know of which has used MRI measures to look at differences in brain between kids who are fit and kids who aren’t fit.” The research focused on the hippocampus, a structure tucked deep in the brain, because it is known to be important in learning and memory.

Just remember that fitness equals brains Previous studies, carried out with older adults and animals, have shown that exercise can increase the size of the hippocampus. A bigger hippocampus is associated with better performance on spatial reasoning and other cognitive tasks. Spatial reasoning ability involves visualising and manipulating two or threedimensional shapes or patterns. Graduate student Laura Chaddock, who led the study with Prof Kramer, said: “In animal studies, exercise has been shown to affect the hippocampus specifically. “It increases the growth of new neurons and cell survival significantly, enhancing memory and learning, and increasing molecules involved in the plasticity of the brain.” Rather than rely on sec-

ond-hand reports of children’s physical-activity level, the researchers measured how efficiently the subjects used oxygen while running on a treadmill. “This is the gold standard measure of fitness,” said Chaddock. Kramer added: “The physically-fit children were much more efficient than the less-fit children at utilising oxygen.” When the researchers analysed the MRI data, they found that the physically-fit children tended to have bigger hippocampal volume about 12% bigger relative to total brain size - than their out-of-shape peers. The children in better physical condition also did better on tests of relational memory - the ability to remember and integrate various types of information - than the others. Chaddock added: “Very fit children had higher perform-

ance on the relational-memory task, and they also had larger hippocampal volumes. In general, those children had better relational memory.” Further analyses indicated that a bigger hippocampus boosted performance on the relational memory task. “If you remove hippocampal

volume from the equation, the relationship between fitness and memory decreases,” she said. The new findings suggest that interventions to increase childhood physical activity could have an important effect on brain development. “We knew that experience

and environmental factors and socio-economic status all impacted brain development,” said Prof Kramer. ”If you get some lousy genes from your parents, you can’t really fix that, and it’s not easy to do something about your economic status. But here’s something we can do something about.”

How horny goat weed can really help cut the risk of prostate cancer MEN are forever being told that healthy lifestyle choices can decrease the risk of prostate cancer. And it is true! They must avoid saturated and trans fats, which may fuel prostate cancer growth. Instead, they should incorporate protective foods, such as soy, green tea and tomatoes, into their diet. Soy contains isoflavones with

specific anti-cancer activity, while green tea is rich in polyphenols. These inhibit the formation of cancer-causing compounds and block the growth of prostate cancer cells. And tomatoes, particularly cooked tomato products, are an excellent source of lycopene, which is linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. In addition, men should ensure your daily, nutritional supplement contains high doses of the anti-oxidant sele-

24 September 2010 - 30 September 2010

nium (200 micrograms) and vitamin E (800 IU), which have been shown to lower the risk of prostate cancer dramatically. Oh yes, here’s the good part (as far as men are concerned). They should maintain vigorous sexual functions, and several herbs have been shown to improve this area of their lives. Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow to the most important part, while Panax ginseng, oats, horny goat weed, maca and seroctin all serve to improve the libido.

British food prices ‘highest in Europe’ FOOD PRICES are higher in Britain than any other European country, a survey has found. According to ‘Farmers Weekly’ British shoppers can expect to spend £137.13 on a basket of food which would cost just £119.57 in France and £120.40 in Germany. Researchers used harmonised consumer prices based on Eurostat statistics to calculate the cost of a basket of food. Items included cereals, meat, fish and seafood, milk, cheese, eggs, fruit, vegetables, sugar and confectionary. Results were then fed into a “quality of life” survey which concluded that the UK and Ireland were the worst places to live in Europe. The survey - by the price comparison website uSwitch.com - found that

France and Spain are the best places to live. In a further blow to British consumers, the trade off between tolerating a poor quality of life but enjoying the highest incomes in Europe has ended. Net household income in the UK is now just £2314 above the European average, compared with £10,000 above average last year. People in the UK also work longer hours, retire later, and receive less annual leave than most of their European counterparts. They enjoy less sunshine along the way and can expect to die two years younger than their French counterparts. France, which has topped the index for the second year running, enjoys the earliest retirement age, spends most on healthcare and has the longest life expectancy. Its workers also benefit from 36 days holiday a year -

compared with just 28 in the UK - and it comes only behind Spain and Italy for hours of sunshine. “Last year compared with

our European neighbours we were miserable but rich, this year we’re miserable and poor,” said uSwitch.com director Ann Robinson.

“Whereas some countries work to live, UK consumers live to work. “In fact we work harder, take less holiday and retire later

than most of our European counterparts - but the high cost of living makes this a necessity rather than a choice.”

Polenta and vegetables with roasted red pepper sauce recipe AS you can see from the picture, vegetarian food need not be colourless and tasteless. It can also be mighty filling and healthy if you choose the right ingredients. Polenta is a popular food dish which has long been common in Italian and other European cuisine. But it has recently gained attention in the UK and the US as well. It is made from ground cornmeal, which is then boiled in water to create a porridgelike substance. Depending on the variety, it can be ground

Page 42

either coarsely or finely, and may be made from either yellow or white cornmeal. This meatless meal satisfies nearly one-quarter of your daily fibre needs and, cooked with vegetables, can be such a tasty alternative. Here’s how you can come up with a delicious, four-portion serving: Ingredients 1 cup uncooked instant polenta 2/3 cup grated Parmesan, divided 1/8-1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Vegetable oil cooking spray 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme (or oregano), or 1 tbsp dried

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon olive oil 8 asparagus stalks, ends trimmed 8 scallions, trimmed 2 small Japanese or Italian eggplants, trimmed and halved 1 medium-large yellow squash (about 1/2 lb), cut into 1/3inch-thick slices 1 cup cherry tomatoes Sauce 1 jar (12 oz) prepared roasted red peppers, drained 1/3 cup vegetable (or chicken) broth 1 large clove garlic chopped, 3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives, basil or parsley (plus extra for garnish) 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar Preparation Bring three cups of water to the boil in a medium-sized heavy saucepan. Add polenta in a stream, whisking to combine. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring frequently, until thick, for 3-5 minutes. Whisk in 1/3 cup Parmesan and season with cayenne and salt. Coat a nine-inch pie

plate with cooking spray. Transfer polenta to pie plate, smooth into an even layer and let cool for 15 minutes. Heat broiler. Whisk garlic, thyme, lemon juice and oil in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Toss vegetables with dressing. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray and arrange vegetables in one layer (or in one layer in a grill basket). Broil vegetables about four inches from heat until tender and slightly charred, 3-5 minutes on each side. Transfer to a platter. Combine all sauce ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Sprinkle polenta with remaining 1/3 cup Parmesan. Broil polenta in pie plate for 2-3 minutes until golden brown, then cut polenta into eight triangles. Divide polenta among four plates. Top with vegetables, drizzle with sauce and sprinkle with chives. Serve any remaining sauce on the side. Then tuck in heartily!

Sudoku - X

The rules of sudoku X are simple - just enter the numbers 1 - 9 once in each row, column and 3 x 3 square within the sudoku X puzzle grid. In addition to standard sudoku, the numbers must only occur once in each side of the 'X' that is marked on the grid. Use logic alone to deduce where each of these numbers must be placed in every cell of a puzzle. Don’t worry! We´ve kept in two original sudokus for you on the right.

September 24th-October 23rd Your close ones really are going to be trying every trick in the book in order to part you and your cash. Stand firm, though, or you will miss out on obtaining a very important personal item. Romance is the most prominent message in your chart as you discover how good it can feel to indulge in yourself and your partner for once in your life. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) The current line-up at this time is going to be providing you with some new solutions to old problems. You are not just climbing the career ladder - you are going to be taking the express lift as people from afar make you some very lucrative and appealing offers. But take each one as it comes and give it great thought and consideration. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) The time has come to put life into perspective and to throw out the rubbish. For some of you, this will mean possessions, and for others it will mean the negative influences that have become such a bind these past months. Friends are going to be crossing the line into romance in the next few days. C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) You are about to go though a lot of changes, and you may be feeling more vulnerable than you’d thought. Just watch your words over the weekend, when the planets will be doing all they can to make you say things you may regret. A little thought is in order, and it will stand you in good stead. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) You are slowly but surely growing ever more confident by the day as you discover how many new

skills and talents you have acquired. A large social gathering links to a family event, and should put you in touch with someone you have not seen eye to eye with of late. It is time to bury the hatchet, so kiss and make up. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) You must try to accept that those we love are not always perfect, and you must sit down and work out what is and what isn’t acceptable in your relationship. You have the stars on your side and the power handed to you throughout the coming week should see you making some excellent and interesting decisions. ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) Mars brings changes for you that will leave little doubt in anyone’s mind about your abilities. You have spent so long waiting for opportunity and your time has now arrived. Romance is also forecast so, from here on in, if you pay attention, listen and don’t talk, it should leave you in no doubt as to what a certain person can offer. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) You don’t appear to care who knows the finer details of your personal life, but if you are not careful, you are going to give a certain person that can help your career a very wrong impression. Stress is less evident than it was last month and indicates that a long-standing problem is now well and

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) You’re not feeling a part of all of the things that are going on in a loved one’s life, but don’t press him or her too hard for details just yet. All will become clear sooner than you think, and you would be wise to put some of your energy into a work problem that you are trying to ignore. Your loved one will let you know what’s going on when the time is right. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) Try to have more faith in your abilities and your charms. If something does not seem to be working in your favour, then you must stand tall and know that it is time to move on. Foreign contacts beckon, which should be able to provide you with great hope and faith in your future. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) New faces in business tell lies in the week ahead, so beware. Some troublesome aspects bring confusion. However, Saturn should blow away any cobwebs that have formed of late, and should also allow you to see though a business contact that you thought had your best interests at heart. Stay cheerful, but watch your back at all times.

Travel site is STA bringing its Bridge the booming and World brand to high street blooming... TRIPADVISOR, the world’s largest travel site, is the first company of its type to break the 40-million monthly barrier for first-time visitors. In addition, TripAdvisor is now available in 14 languages, across 23 countries, and has 20 million registered members, up from 15m since January. Such is its growing popularity that the number of people checking out the site has grown by 60% this year alone.

Page 44

The launch of new websites in Turkey, Denmark, Mexico, Poland, Norway, Australia, Singapore and Thailand will almost certainly have accounted for a fair percentage of that figure. Steve Kaufer, founder and head of TripAdvisor, said: “We are excited to continue our aggressive growth globally, to help new audiences around the world plan and experience the perfect trip.” The travel site was created by travellers for travellers and is recognised globally as the top source for travel reviews and planning.

STA Travel has revealed plans to open six retail stores under its new over50s brand Bridge the World, which launches on Saturday.

In the company’s first move outside the youth market, STA Travel bought the brand name from Stella Travel Services UK after research revealed strong brand recognition among customers, despite it not having traded for the last three years. The long-haul tailor-made operator will initially focus on Australia and New Zealand and will move into Asia in November. Fifteen staff have been employed to work across the website, call centre and its first retail shop in Bournemouth, which will open at the end of this month. It aims to have six shops by the end of 2011. Commercial director James Herbert said: “We are tailoring the shops to this market. They will still have plasma TV screens, but also globes, wooden floors and high-

grade furniture. “We want to stretch ourselves beyond the youth market. People are very au fait with the internet, but they still want to talk to someone or see them face to face. Consultants

can really add value, especially when it comes to complex itineraries. “We have mostly taken on people with a travel background, but also people who have travelled extensively.”

THE LAST major obstacle over the planned £5bn merger between British Airways and Iberia to create the world’s third biggest airline has been removed.

BA-Iberia merger clears the key pension hurdle

It comes after the Spanish carrier approved BA’s plan to tackle its £3.7bn pension deficit. Iberia had the right to cancel the tie-up if it felt the hole would be too much of a drain on the finances of the merged firm. “This decision represents another step forward in the merger process,” Iberia said in a statement after a board meeting. BA set out a recovery plan in June to address the deficit, putting aside at least £330m a year until

2026. The tie-up between BA and Iberia, agreed in April, already has EU clearance and shareholder approval is expected in November. Once finalised, BA shareholders will own 56% of the combined company, to be called International Airlines Group. Iberia shareholders

Bridge the World will source new hotel product and focus on premium economy travel. Herbert added: “We see this as a place for STA Travel customers to migrate to.”

will own 44% of the new firm, which will be Europe’s second largest airline. The two firms have marked Asia as a key region for expansion once the merger is completed. They also plan to launch a joint transatlantic business with AMR Corp’s American Airlines this autumn.

RENAULT’S all-electric DeZir concept is set to steal the Paris Show, and no wonder because its sensational features stand out a mile. The

classy

show

car,

Your heart’s DeZir dreamed up by the French car-maker’s new conceptcar design director Axel Breun, could even go into limited production, and it

will surely inspire a whole new look for the brand. There’s a lot riding on the DeZir, the first model in the new era, and it is bound to

create a huge buzz in Paris. It is the first of six new Renaults promised in the next two years, and it’s all about style. French élan! It has proper supercar proportions, at nearly two metres wide and just over a metre high. The featherweight 830kg Kevlar body sits low on 21-inch wheels, and a dramatic red glow, created by LED lights, pulses along the spine of the car. This represents a heartbeat, and starts at the huge badge at the front, before passing through the back of the driver’s seat and exiting via the polished aluminium air intakes in the doors. Breun said: “Clearly, we want the message to be, ‘Wow, I can fall in love with that. It’s a huge change’.” While the model looks for-

ward to Renault’s design future, its profile takes styling cues from Europe’s rich sports-car heritage. “We had pictures of old Maseratis and Ferraris, and also Alpines, not only the Berlinette, but also the beautiful Le Mans cars from the Sixties,” added Breun. “That’s where the panoramic screen came from.” But while the DeZir looks futuristic, there are glimpses of more practical models in there, including the next Clio and the supermini, which will both take inspiration from the concept. In fact, the enlarged logo and full-length slatted grille will become the face of all future Renaults. And the DeZir’s powertrain, a 148bhp electric motor with mid-mounted lithium-ion batteries, is

shared with the forthcoming mass-market Fluence ZE and Twizy electric cars. Breun said: “If the DeZir goes into limited production, I could imagine it selling for half the price of a Tesla. Why not? Our factory in Dieppe has produced super sports cars in the past.” The site was the original Alpine plant, and built lowvolume models such as the Renault Sport Spider and GTA supercar. The DeZir would follow in their footsteps, with a claimed fivesecond 0-62mph sprint time. Parisians lucky enough to catch it driving through the streets of the city for a recent promotional video would certainly agree. “It was amazing to see it moving,” said Breun. “We got a lot of attention.”

Mini working up a pace for new Rally challenge MINI’S return to the World Rally Championship is gathering pace, and the company are already testing their new four-wheel drive Countryman in preparation for a 2012 challenge. Legendary motorsports firm Prodrive have been contracted to build the new rally car, and the first complete machine has been out at the Banbury team’s private test track in Warwickshire. The first trial took place over four days, when the engineering team drove the car primarily on tarmac, but also including several kilometres on loose surfaces and Prodrive’s low-grip facility.

The Countryman WRC was then packaged up and shipped down to Portugal for a week of gravel testing. David Lapworth, Prodrive’s technical director, said: “As with any totally new car, it is vital to take time to ensure all the systems are working as intended before embarking on a week-long gravel test.” The first test car is running with an interim body and aero package, and features the same swirly camouflage that BMW use for their prototype road cars. The BMW Motorsport firm in Germany are building the car’s 1.6-litre turbo-charged engine for Prodrive. Design of the final WRC bodywork is underway, and the car will make its debut at the Paris Motor Show, which runs from 2nd-16th October. Mini will contest a limited number of rounds next year

Arconada axed! CD Tenerife 0 Celta Vigo 2 GONZALO ARCONADA has almost rewritten the Tenerife history books in the last few weeks. His axing as manager after just four matches is a record which may never be broken. He becomes the shortestserving full-time boss after overseeing the club’s worst start to a season since 1959. Last Saturday’s home defeat by a dogged-looking Celta Vigo was the worst Santa Cruz display since the infamous 3-0 defeat by Vecindario a few seasons back. The latest defeat, which left Tenerife bottom of the Second Division and the only side in senior Spanish football without a point, was totally unacceptable. Defeats by Girona, Salamanca, Elche (in the Cup) and Rayo Vallecano were bad enough, but this was something else. At no stage did Tenerife look like a team who had any interest in the result. Fans can accept defeat if their team put up a fight. But this was pathetic. It was almost a carbon-copy of last week’s Rayo performance, so I’m not going into it again. But as early as five minutes in, fans knew what would happen. Celta looked like the hosts and they battered Tenerife. They needed just 13 min-

utes to take the lead through a Trashoras penalty. The knife was twisted by the fact that he is a former Las Palmas captain. It was 2-0 after 26 minutes when the excellent Enrique de Lucas crossed for unmarked Catala to head home from six yards. De Lucas, mustard all match, is playing his best football since he left Chelsea a few years ago. At two down, Tenerife should have rallied, but they shrank visibly. Arconada had no idea how to change it and even though he rolled the dice at half-time, it made little difference. Mikel Alonso looked sharp in midfield and Dani Kome tried hard, but Tenerife never tested Falcon in the away goal. They even managed to miss a penalty when Kome hit the bar 20 minutes from time. Oh, and why didn’t Nino take it? Anyway … Shortly afterwards, De Lucas hit the bar and then the crowd got really annoyed. The white hankies came out, the scarves were flown and the booing began. Loud … swiftly followed by a deafening roar of “Oltra, Oltra, Oltra”. The former coach’s name reverberated around the Heliodoro. It was chilling. Then the funniest thing I have ever seen at a football match. The Tenerife fans started the Oles … to every CELTA touch. Yep, they were cheering the visitors, and even booed when they missed an open

Arconada calls a taxi

Page 46

goal. It was bizarre. And if Arconada didn’t know beforehand, he certainly knew the axe was coming after that. Crowd fury is the last thing any chairman wants, and Miguel Conception is no fool. Officially, the sacking happened on Monday afternoon: “We are all upset about this, but we had to analyse the situation.” said Conception. “There are 38 games to go and an awful lot of points to play for. “The responsibility is now with me to find the right person. I don’t know when that will be, but it must be right. We must find a solution to this problem and stop making mistakes.” His words spoke volumes. At the end of last season, it was clear that manager Jose Luis Oltra and director of football Santiago Llorente, who signs the players, were at loggerheads. They couldn’t work together and one of them had to go. Oltra, popular with fans, was out of contract, while Llorente had made his case for signing players good enough to bounce straight back. Chairman Conception gambled on Llorente and let Oltra go. Arconada was hired, at the recommendation of Llorente. Now, you don’t need to be Einstein to see where this is going! So when Conception says: “The responsibility is now with me,” he is almost making Llorente’s position untenable. Fans want Oltra back, and he

is still available. But he would not return if Llorente were involved, so he would have to be fired as well. Along with Arconada and his backroom staff, that would mean four sets of compensation the club cannot afford. I hope Conception is a decent poker player as his next call is massive for the club’s future. He HAS to get this right. For his part, Arconada took his sacking with dignity “I have no grudge against anyone. I respect the decision made and I wish my replacement all the very best of luck.” So reserve team manager Alfredo Merino is in charge for tonight’s (Friday’s) match at Xerez. He has been making the right noises this week, saying: “I am honoured and proud to be in charge of this great club. “I will work hard to win our first three points of the season. I have no magic wand, but the players have been great this week. We will try a few things differently and I want them to take more responsibility. I am not worried about Xerez, and neither are my players”. When asked if he wanted the job full-time, he was a little more ‘political’: “I know my work here can end Sunday, Monday, Tuesday … who knows? Let’s talk after this match and after three points.” A win would certainly give him a boost and, short-term, there are worse options. But if Conception really wants to fire up the team and the fans, he has to make one phone call and get down on his knees. C'mon Migue l … CALL UP OLTRA! Finals Night Flukers hit the is promising a real feast target at last

IT’S FINALS NIGHT, and the Oasis Fm Darts League takes a break to join up with a host of players and supporters alike at the Nauta Bar, in the Guaza campsite, tonight (Friday) This is, without doubt, one of the highlights of the season. We have witnessed some excellent competition in previous years, and the 2010 line-up promises to deliver another great spectacle. Division 1 leaders and hosts, Nauta Bar, have no fewer than ten players involved, including Jusi Sue, who will be taking on Betty in the Ladies Final. Indeed, Betty will be rather busy as she is also in the trebles and doubles! Representing Amigos Bad Girls for the first time at finals night, Marilyn, Sheena and Ann will be well-supported, along with other first-timers Sue and Julie, of the Tavern. The cast will also include players from Exiles, Bar 180, Cafe Rood, Tenerife Sons and Phoenix Bar. There are 30 players taking part as they battle for the six trophies on offer. A warm welcome and some fine hospitality is always on offer from Ian and the rest of the Nauta Bar team so please come along, get behind the players and sample the atmosphere. The action begins at 8.30pm, when the order will

be: “Lets play darts!” Semi-final matches will be best-of-5s with the finals over seven games. One rule change was added at the Annual Meeting regarding substitute players in competitions. Only in the doubles and trebles may one player be substituted, but only in extreme circumstances. The player must be from the same venue and have played at least four league matches, and must not have played in the competition already. Replacement-player requests must be put to the committee for authorisation. The line-up Men’s Trebles Mitch/Ian/Dale - Nauta Tom/London/Chris - Nauta Steve/Bubbles/Ashley Phoenix Grizzly/Shammy/? his first 180 of the season. Mitch then stormed back with a maximum of his own and, after some “not bad” darts from young Tom, the visitors won 6-2. Tenerife Sons keep up the chase with a 5-3 win over Target A, poor finishing letting the away team down. Three other local derbies had Super Steve Sub notching a 180 for the Phoenix Bar as they brushed aside Silver Surfers 6-2. Toscales took all five singles at Woodys A and were thinking of a whitewash. It was not to be, though, as Woodys stormed back to claim the last three games. Exiles overcame the X-Men 6-2, while Rood A left Sundowners with a 5-3 success. Big winners in Division 2 were The Tavern. They dished out a whitewash to those lovely Playgirls, one of whom said: “We had the wind against us.” Try to avoid the cabbage next time! top to 14 points after beating their stablemates, the Hunters, 6-2, and Gaffers are still looking good in third spot after a comeback from 3-1 down to earn a 5-3 success over Nauta B. Nauta C had a regulation 62 victory over mid-table Tenerife Sun, and Rood B moved up one place with a 5-3 scoreline against a Yelas Bar team who aren’t finding any sort of form. The Phoenix Flames were looking good for a win at Amigos Bad Girls after winning four of the singles, but were unable to close out the match and it ended allsquare. A good night was had by all, I am told! Bar 180B drop down one place, despite their solid 6-2 win against La Caña Lancers. A Saturday match saw Woodys B put seven past the Bad Girls. Kate won her first game ever and Silvia her second, and then the doubles for the home team. Only Sheena could stop the rot and got the double to take the trebles.

PUBLIC transport was first seen in Tenerife in 1854 when, on 4th January, the Hardisson Brothers inaugurated a horsedrawn omnibus service between Santa Cruz and La Laguna. Two, 12-seater coaches, each drawn by six horses, were shipped in from Marseilles, and the company ran three trips a day. In their first year, the brothers carried 8,963 passengers at a cost of five reals (Spanish dollars) per trip. The original coach station was sited next to the Teatro Guimera, and the stables were located at the end of Calle San Fransisco. However, because the unpaved road surfaces were eroding, the coaching station was moved in 1899 to Calle La Luz (Imeldo Serez). The coach was reserved for ladies, while the men travelled on a box-seat next to the driver, or on the roof, along with parcels and hand luggage. By 1860, the Hardisson Brothers had competition in the shape of the Francisco Buenafuente and Pedro Rodriguez companies, who ran the same route, with five trips a day, as well as an extended service to La Oratava and Puerto de la Cruz. In addition, Juan Antonio Diez’s company made a daily trip to Guimar, which took five hours. The first motorised omnibus, or “Jardinera”, arrived in May 1902, when hotel proprietor M Louis Alexander, of Meson Alexander - based in the Plaza de la Constitucion (La Candelaria) - introduced a Panhard et Levassor 12hp into service. To raise awareness of his new transportation system, Alexander invited local dignitaries to take a trip in his “autobus” to the Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz. The journey was made in the record time of 1hr 59mins. Upon the death of Alexander in 1912, Luis Gomes Camacho, of Camacho’s Hotel, took over the bus company, and that year he purchased five new Maxwells to add to the fleet. He also extended the service as far as

Page 48

Icod de los Vinos and Garachico. By 1920, a number of bus companies were operating and a merger of businesses that year, between Carlos Hernandez, La Union, Charles H Hamilton and La Linea, created the “Union de Autobuses Urbanos”. Transportes de Tenerife SL were formed in 1942 and, with a fleet of 20 Studebakers, operated a service every 15 minutes between Santa Cruz and La Laguna, and every half-hour to La Oratava and Puerto de la Cruz, with two trips daily to Granadilla and Buenavista. The company continued to expand, and operated under this name until 1978, when they changed their name to Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife SA, or TITSA, as it is known today. With over 600 vehicles and 1,600 employees, they has come a long way since the early days of the Hardisson Brothers, and now carry over 50 million passengers yearly. A second form of competition facing the Hardissons was the tranvia. This was an electric tramway, which was

inaugurated on 7th April 1901. The line ran from the Plaza de España, in Santa Cruz, to the Plaza de la Concepcion in La Laguna, with the tram terminal and generating station sited midway, at La Cuesta. The first tracks were laid at the Plaza de la Marina, near to Castillo San Juan, on 29th October 1899 and it is interesting to note that the entire works, including the installation of the track, took less

than 18 months. Its modern replacement, which opened in 2006, took over twice that time to complete! The original tramway was built with Belgian capital, and Don Fernando May, the Director of Works for “Tranvia Electrica de Tenerife SA”, later became the Belgian Consul. An extension to the line, to Tacaronte, was opened in 1904 in the presence of His Majesty Leopold I, king of

Belgium. The Spanish king, Alfonso XIII, and his entourage, rode on the tranvia during his Island visit in March 1906. The tramway was operated for 50 years, and at its height, in 1942, it was carrying an average of 13,588 passengers per day. And although it was taken over in 1927 by the Cabildo (Island Government) because of financial difficulties, it remained in service until 1951.

At this stage, a series of fatal accidents and other problems, through lack of maintenance and investment, resulted in the line being abandoned. It was to be another halfcentury before Santa Cruz would see tram rails in its streets again when in June 2007, the new Tranvia was opened by King Juan Carlos and Doña Sofia. The current service now carries over 43,000 passengers each day.
