Number’s up for dial-a-drug gang Armed police nab 470 mobiles in 55m-euro cocaine raid on villa SPANISH police have smashed Europe’s largest and most sophisticated cocaine laboratory near Madrid following a two-year probe They arrested 25 people at a discreet, white-painted villa and seized 300kg (660lbs) of cocaine, with a street value of about £25million. Anti-drug agents also found 33 tons of chemicals used to prepare the drug for sale, according to a statement issued by Madrid police this week. The raid actually took place on 7th January, when armed police impounded goods and financial assets linked to the laboratory valued altogether at about 55 million euros (£40m). They also confiscated 470 mobile phones. Columbians and several Spanish lawyers, who allegedly helped launder money made from selling the cocaine, were among the gang members arrested. At the national police headquarters in Madrid, officers displayed cocaine-refining equipment, automatic pistols, iPads, stacks of 500 notes and shrink-wrapped blocks of cocaine taken from the villa and safe houses owned by the gang. Jubilant Superintendent Francisco Miguelañez, head of Spain’s Serious Crime Squad, said: “I have worked in the drug squad for 20 years and

have never seen anything like it, or heard of anything comparable, in the rest of Europe. “They were obsessed by security, and even had directional microphones to track what was happening outside.” Locals were astonished at the goings-on at the villa, three miles from the town of Villanueva de Perales. A resident called Javier said: “I couldn’t believe it when the police arrived. “The one-armed guy there, who I knew as Nestor, seemed so normal. He would say hello and sometimes sat down for a beer if I offered him one. He said he worked

over the internet.” The twostorey stone villa, rented for two years by the drugs gang, was next to a smallholding owned by José Luis Bernabé, who added: “He used to get into his Audi and tear off at speed.” A gardener came once a week from a nearby village but, apart from that, Nestor did not let people in through the metal gate, even refusing entry to phone company workers on one occasion. Javier added: “When I woke up on 7th January, there was a helicopter circling round and round, but the police wouldn’t tell us why they had arrested him. I saw them taking away barrels of yellow liquid. They filled up four trucks with the stuff.” Police said the laboratory workers had to delay their latest activities because the raw cocaine base needed had been intercepted by authorities in an unnamed Latin America country. The Spanish and Colombian gang behind the laboratory employed bodyguards and changed mobile phones weekly, which explained why 470 devices, including 24 BlackBerry phones, were among the goods confiscated. This latest police success follows last week’s seizure of another big consignment of cocaine, hidden in plastic bananas contained in a 22-ton shipment of real fruit, which arrived in the Spanish port of Algeciras from Ecuador.

No slope! CANARIAN WEEKLY reader Les Martin, contacted the newspaper to highlight a pedestrian improvement which is being totally overlooked by those it is there to help – pedestrians. It seems they do not know it exists. The seafront area of Playa Bobo immediately in front of the casino in Playa de las Americas in past months has seen vast improvements so that it is now possible for you to walk all the way from the port to Los Cristianos on the flat, ideal for visitors. However, initially there appears to be a glitch, when walking you reach an intersection outside Deborath’s café where there is nothing but a sea of steps. Les Martin from Surrey told Canarian Weekly, ‘ I stay in the San Eugenio area for 3-4 months of the year and walk frequently along this part of the sea front, I see prams, bikes even wheel chairs being hoisted up these steps, but there’s no need around the corner there is a slope.’ The slope is well hidden and is at the side of Deborath’s café, so for those pedestrians that find the 21 steps a

challenge fear not, there is a slope. The problem is that there is no sign to advise
walkers of the slight deviation to the walkway. Canarian Weekly will advise
the municipality of Adeje and hopefully in due course a sign will appear.
Tenerife tourism hitting the heights CABILDO President Ricardo Melchior and Tenerife Tourism Minister José Manuel Bermúdez have spent a busy few days at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid. Their aim has been to increase air capacity with mainland Spain, and also to maintain the Island’s leadership in the domestic Canarian tourist market. They held meetings with airlines Spanair, Air Europa and Vueling, and also met with Travelplan, Condor and Soltour operators. The Fair, which began on Wednesday and finishes on Sunday, presents a variety of tourist attractions and is regarded as a major tourist source to Tenerife travellers and those of the rest of the Canary Islands. Overall, the Spanish market is up by 1.55% on last year’s figures with a total of 1,373,541 domestic visitors from January to November,

Unsurprisingly, considering his global popularity as a sporting pin-up, Rafa has been chosen as the company’s new image for this spring and summer. despite the negative results of the last five months. Paulino Rivero, President of the Canary Islands, was also kept on his toes as he toured the vast fair with Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, and representatives from various regional and local authorities. In all, there are 9,532 exhibitors all plugging their own attractions and, says Rivero: “2011 will be presented as a pivotal year for tourism to again generate employment in the islands.” Fitur is a great showcase for tourism in the Canaries and José Miguel Perez, President of the Gran Canaria Cabildo, predicted a period of “cautious optimism” for tourism in the islands. Despite the severe economic crisis facing Spain, he added :“It is really encouraging that everything points to growth.”

Government is keen Canarias Folk Fest Arona to keep the foreign home-owners happy THE SPANISH Government is discussing ways to give more security to foreigners purchasing property in the country. El País reports that it is one of the ideas currently under consideration to try to resurrect the real estate sector from the hole it has been in for the past three years. José Blanco, Minister for Development, has proposed “undertaking a round of visits to the countries most likely to invest in Spanish real estate, to explain the judicial guarantees in Spain and to communicate the legislative reforms to be carried out to increase judicial security even more”.
Of great interest to those foreigners who have found themselves owning illegallybuilt property is a comment from the Ministry of Development. It says the idea is to assure investors that they will not be prejudiced if they buy a
home in good faith, only to discover later that it is illegal. The Ministry made this conclusion public after two days of meetings with representatives in the real estate industry. On Monday, they met with the banks and financial bodies, and they then linked up with promoters and constructors on Wednesday. Ways in which the Government could strengthen the finances of promoters was discussed, along with methods to try to stimulate activity, starting in areas where there are few homes on offer. The real estate promoters will meet up with the Government again next month to harden up their proposals.
The regular folk performances in the municipality of Arona will continue until April, 14th, 2011. A great chance to get closer to our deep-rooted traditions. Weekly Schedule: •Thursday, 20:00 h - Folk group performance in Playa de Los Cristianos •Friday, 20:00 h - Folk group dancers’ parade in Las Galletas •Saturday, 20:00h - Folk group dancers’ parade in Playa de Las Américas
Lights, camera, action in Tenerife IN 2010 Tenerife Tourism assisted a total of 89 national and international audiovisual productions, which took advantage of the qualities of the island as a natural setting, through the Tenerife Film Commission (TFC). This high number of filmings in 2010 was a 15 per cent increase compared to those made in 2009, indicating that the island has estab-
lished itself as an authentic recording stage for productions that are then converted as a result into a valuable promotional tool for the island. We must take into account the considerable economic impact on the Isle of these filmings, including the revenue generated by each, both for accommodation and food plus hiring staff and local teams. Facts • In 2010, there were 531 days of filming on the island, double that of the previous year. 220 consultations were conducted and 129 permissions granted.

The couple who just can’t leave us alone! HERTFORDSHIRE couple Pat and Rodney Brittain are this year celebrating 25 years of holidaying in Tenerife and staying in the same hotel - Las Dalias in Costa Adeje. Rodney, 68, told Canarian Weekly: “We used to visit Tenerife and stayed in Puerto de la Cruz. Then, we were introduced to Las Dalias by a work colleague back in the Eighties. We stayed in the November and have been coming back ever since!’ Pat, who is 64, added: “We have two sons, seven grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren, and over the years the whole family has stayed here - except the newest addition, who is only one-week-old!’ In nearly three decades, the couple from Stevenage have witnessed a vast amount of change on the Island. “We booked Las Dalias with Thomson originally,” recalled Rodney.

“We can remember receiving a letter saying that we could move as there was building work going on - San Eugenio Shopping Centre but we’re glad we didn’t. “The shopping centre was a
hole in the ground, there was no Marina, the supermarket was across the road under the tennis courts and the furthest you could walk was the Esmerelda, in Torviscas. Really, the area was an exten-
sion of Playa de Las Americas.” Now the pensioners relax and can walk along the promenade, all the way to La Caleta. And at Christmas, some 25-30 couples who have also been staying in Las Dalias year after year all get together. Rodney continued:, “We stay half-board and the staff are excellent. People like Francesco Habier, Miguel Alonso and Eloy Dominguez go out of their way to help, and some of the original staff are still here from all those years ago.” We asked the couple what tempted them back year after year? Pat replied: “It’s informal, it’s friendly, it’s really like a home from home and you are made to feel so welcome.” Las Dalias is a four-star hotel and is part of the Iberostar group with hotels and resorts in Spain, the Mediterranean, Cape Verde, Caribbean and in Brazil. All of their resorts and hotels are of four and fivestar quality.

Door shuts on Canarian illegals ILLEGAL immigrants arriving in the Canary Islands last year were almost non-existent, compared with the 2009 figures. In fact, the Spanish Interior Ministry revealed this week that the 196 migrants who made it totalled the lowest level since 1997. In 2009, the authorities recorded 2,246 arrivals in the Canaries - regarded for years as a gateway to Europe from Africa - against the astonishing figure of 31,678 in 1996.
Spanish officials believe that thousands of Africans who used to attempt the perilous journey by boat to Spanish soil died of thirst, hunger or exposure every year. The mass arrival of their boats has become a rare sight in recent times because of the Spanish recession and, of more importance, the repatriation agreements Madrid signed with the African countries. They were a major source of migrants, but Spain has also worked with other European nations to boost maritime surveillance.

The most popular age in the country is 34; totalling 819,737, followed closely by

Young Spanish are so well read MOST of Spain’s young men and women are confirmed bookworms, although newspapers are mainly a no-go area for them! Nearly all teenagers and under-30s questioned say they are regular readers, the majority being in the 14-24 age-group, who soak up comics, magazines and novels. They are “bored” with classical or historical novels and prefer tales about mystery, comedy, fantasy and adventure.
Harry Potter is a confirmed favourite, as are the fantasy novels by Laura Gallego, the 33-year-old former Valencia university student, and the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, the late, Swedish crime-writer. Other books include anything by Italian author Federico Moccia, who writes realistic tales of teenage angst and romance, set mostly in Rome; Cornelia Funke’s Reckless, and Jordi Sierra i Fabra’s Kafka and the Travelling Doll.
National police can sidestep retirement SPAIN’S national policemen can now retire five years later than the previous age limit of 60 if they so desire. The overall state pension age, which has increased to 67 years, will not affect the National force. But officers can carrying on working for another five
years longer than they were able to under the old ruling. From 58, National Police officers will be permitted to “occupy a position consistent with their psychological and physical condition”. The retirement-age increase for the National force is voluntary, and most members say they welcome the idea.
El Medano snaps up Jaws attacks PUPILS from Estrellas Theatre School were used as extras in a forthcoming documentary about the recent shark attacks in the Red Sea. Jacqueline Hankin, a LAMDA drama teacher with connections to documentary-makers Tigress Production UK, was asked to organise a suitable location and provide extras for the film Red Sea Jaws, which will be broadcast by Channel 5 on Tuesday (25th Jan) at 8pm. The Tigress film crew wanted to re-enact the spine-chilling events of December’s shark attacks in Sharm el-Sheikh, and Jacqueline chose the serene El Medano beach as a location. In December, the popular tourist resort of Sharm elSheikh hit the headlines when four swimmers were brutally attacked and one killed in a spate of unprece-
dented shark attacks. But what turned the warm, safe waters of the Red Sea into a real-life horror story? This revealing film pieces together the dramatically events which unfolded over five days.
Viewers will see reports of the ongoing investigation into why the attacks happened, and there are terrifying accounts from eye witnesses and survivors. One witness said: “There
was screaming. People were running down the jetty, and then running back on to the beach. There were whistles going, and a siren went off as well, from just by the jetty. It really was like a scene out of Jaws.”
Eric Cantona to make a football comeback FORMER Manchester United star Eric Cantona has announced his return to football after almost 14 years away from the game. The Frenchman has agreed to become the director of soccer at the reformed New York Cosmos club. Cantona, who retired from the game in 1997, will head to the Big Apple to oversee the building of the Cosmos team, as they aim to join America’s Major League Soccer in 2013. Saying he was “very honoured” to be joining the club, Cantona said: “It’s a big project, a wonderful project. “The Cosmos are very strong, beautifully made, with a great past. It’s kind of a mix between football and art.” In their glory days, the

Cosmos boasted a wealth of talent like Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Neeskens attracting 50,000-strong crowds. Footballing legend Pele ended his playing career at New York but has returned to become the club’s honorary president. The original team folded in 1985 when the North American Soccer League was disbanded. The Cosmos revival is being led by British businessman Paul Kemsley who said it was
“a personal thrill” to hire Cantona. The iconic forward won five league titles while playing for Leeds and Manchester United in the 1990s. In 1995, he was banned for eight months after his infamous kung fu kick attack on a Crystal Palace supporter. Since his retirement, Cantona has starred in a number of films, including Elizabeth, and had a brief involvement in beach soccer.

What’s your hotel like? It’s rubbish! HOW do you fancy spending your Spanish holiday in a pile of rubbish? Not an option for any self-respecting Brit, you’d think. But it’s not as ludicrous as it sounds because a new mini-hotel has opened in Madrid, built from 12 tons of rubbish recovered from European beaches. The temporary hotel is the
work of German artist HA Schult. It was displayed in Rome last June as part of the United Nations World Environment Day. It is on now display in Madrid’s Plaza de Callao today (Friday) and all over the weekend, to coincide with (FITUR), the World Tourism Fair. Schult, famous for his “Trash Men” sculptures, says of the philosophy of this hotel: “It is to show the damage we are causing to the
beaches and the coast; it reflects how things could turn out if we do not look after our planet.” The trash hotel is sponsored by Corona beer, as part of the company’s Coronita Save the Beach campaign to protect Europe’s beaches. The beer company aims to save one beach in Europe every year, and it will be selected by voting online on the campaign’s webpage.
Pension-age protest sparks union lock-ins UNIONS are preparing a series of lock-outs to protest at plans to increase Spain’s state pension age to 67. And officials have warned the Government that there may be further general strikes to press home their point. Ignacio Fernández Toxo, secretary-general of the Workers’ Commission
(CCOO), and Cándido Méndez, of the UGT (General Workers’ Union), say the move is “unjust” and counterproductive” because it forces people to go on working when they no longer feel mentally or physically capable. They also argue that it prevents freeing up jobs for younger people, who are struggling in this economic climate to find work. The first lock-ins took place
in social security offices in provincial and district capitals on Wednesday. Both the unions and the Government say they are open to negotiations, but neither party has been able to come to an agreement. Fernández Toxo and Méndez have warned the Government they are not going to “take it lying down”, and say they are quite prepared to organise more countrywide strikes.
Repeat prescriptions - at just a key stroke PEOPLE suffering chronic conditions will no longer have to make an appointment to see their doctor for repeat prescriptions. A new prescription launched today (Friday) should ease pressure on the primary care sector significantly, and make life easier for those on longterm treatment programmes. It also covers those issued by hospitals. The standardised form guarantees that any pharmacy in Spain will dispense a patient’s medicine, whether for single use or as part of a long-term treatment plan. Prescriptions will have to show the patient’s details, the name of the medicine, the name of the person prescribing the medicine as well as the dose, treatment duration and date. They will also contain addi-
tional details, aimed specifically at patients with chronic conditions, which will allow the drugs to be dispensed a specific number of times after the starting date. The new electronic prescription, to be introduced on a gradual basis across the whole of Spain, will make sure that patients can get hold of their prescription

drugs anywhere in the country. But the system will also prevent people from accumulating medicines at home by allowing only one month’s worth to be dispensed at any one time. Under the new law, chiropodists will also be allowed to prescribe prescription drugs, just like doctors and orthodontists.

The State of Alarm was introduced by the Government following the wildcat strike action by air traffic controllers on 4th December, which effectively left the airports under military control after Spanish airspace had be closed. An initial 15-day period was extended to finish at midnight on Saturday and was the first time this measure had been used in democratic Spain. Carme Chacón, Minister for
Defence, announced on Saturday that the Government was to train 100 military air traffic controllers so that they would be able to operate civil control towers in the future if needed. That would guarantee Spanish airspace never closing down through industrial action again. Chacon thanked the military for their “efficient work, which allowed citizens to have a quiet Christmas”. Meanwhile, Development Minister José Blanco has warned the air traffic controllers that they are obliged to negotiate with AENA over their labour conditions. He reminded them that they had signed an undertaking to talk with AENA until the end of January to try to come up with a solution.
Ouch! Fuel bill’s going up and up PETROL prices in Spain are just one cent below 2008’s record high after yet another increase, taking it up to 1.265 euros per litre in some garages in the last week or so. The way the price of oil is going worldwide, petrol is likely to be the most expen-

sive ever in Spanish history in no time at all, Despite these dramatic rises, fuel continues to be cheaper in Spain - and especially here in Tenerife - than any of the other 26 EU countries. And it still costs the least out of the 16 Eurozone countries.
out by a Spanish judge A JUDGE in Spain has ruled that Irish lowcost airline Ryanair cannot impose a charge on passengers who do not print out their own boarding cards. A case was brought by Spanish lawyer Dan Miro, who was charged the standard 40euro Ryanair fee for not doing so before his flight between Girona and Alghero in Italy. In a move that will set a precedent for other airlines, the Spanish court ruled that the obligation of “issuing” the ticket was the responsibility of the airline itself. Being a “low-cost business” did not justify this type of measure, said Judge Barbara Maria Cordoba, of the Barcelona commercial court, who added that the practice was “abusive” and “unacceptable”. Ryanair officials argued in
court that being a “low-cost” company gave it the right to adopt this policy, and had actually fulfilled its obligation to issue the boarding pass by sending the passenger a PDF file to print out. The airline also pointed out that passengers were all aware of, and agreed to, these conditions when they booked. In fact, they can even print the boarding card
at any airport terminal if they bring the PDF file with them. Ryanair has the right to appeal and is expected to do so, which means the airline will continue to operate the policy pending appeal. The case could well end up in the EU High Court of Justice. “The Consumers Union of Spain (UCE) hailed the decision, describing the Irish com-
pany’s policy on boarding cards as “abusive”. In a statement, it said: “International air traffic laws, to which Ryanair is subject, oblige a transporter to provide the travel document.” Ryanair boasted last September that it had overtaken Spanish flag-carrier Iberia as the largest airline in Spain in terms of the number of passengers carried.

Plans for US-style local TV channels unveiled
Plans for US-style local TV centering on major UK conurbations have been unveiled by the Government. The proposals would see one channel broadcasting local news and content in “10 to 12” areas to begin with. However, the Government aims to have “10-20 local TV services operating by 2015”. The plans were unveiled by Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt at the Oxford Media Convention. He invited firms to register their interest in running the new channel by March 1. Licences for local television services will be handed out before the end of next year. Mr Hunt said: “To make this vision a reality I am today inviting existing and new media providers to come forward with suggestions as to how this network channel - or local TV ‘spine’ - could work. “What this will mean, for con-
sumers, is a new channel dedicated to the provision of local news and content. One that will sit alongside other public service broadcasters, offering a new voice for local communities, with local perspectives that are directly relevant to them.” He continued: “It is easy to be patronising about hyperlocal services, but take a look at the evidence of what consumers truly value. “People in Barnham don’t want to watch what is going on in Southampton. People in Chelmsford aren’t interested in what’s happening in Watford. That is the system we currently have at the moment, so that is what we are trying to rethink.” Mr Hunt said 24 hours a day of local news and content was “not viable”. The BBC has agreed to cover start-up costs of up to £25m in 2013/14 for local TV, for up to 20 services, as part of last year’s licence fee settlement. It will also offer up to £5m a year for three years from 2014/15 as part of the deal.
PM accused of broken vow over a disabled child A MOTHER struggling to care for her disabled daughter has accused the Prime Minister of breaking a pledge to ensure more is done to support families in her situation. Riven Vincent had posted on a web forum that her sixyear-old child Celyn may have to go into residential care because so little help is available. Thousands responded to the message on social media sites, prompting a Downing Street spokesman to say the Prime Minister David Cameron was also “very concerned”. Ms Vincent released a statement about her daughter after it emerged Mr Cameron had promised her more would be done in a pre-election meeting. “The money the Government has allocated for short breaks and respite care - £800m over four years - is not enough and worse still it’s not going to be ring-fenced,” she said. “So there’s nothing to stop cash-strapped local authorities from using the money elsewhere. “I have no wish to put my daughter into a home. We want to look after her, all I am asking for is a little more support. “Without this, we simply cannot cope and nor can families up and down the country just like ours. We are crumbling,” she added. Her six-year-old daughter is blind and has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy. The girl cannot walk, talk or sit up. Celyn - named in some reports as Holly, an English
version of the name - needs 24-hour care, but the family receive six hours of help a week. In November, mother-offour Ms Vincent was among mums who questioned Mr Cameron during a webchat on Mumsnet. She told him the number of nappies disabled children receive is rationed and challenged him to do more for families in her situation. The PM said he would look into it and promised to visit her at home in Bristol - which he did in March. But now Ms Vincent feels let down after discovering she cannot get extra care for her daughter in their own home. “He (Mr Cameron) promised us personally before the election that my Holly and the NHS would be safe in his hands,” she said. “But clearly he has broken his vow and we feel very upset,” she added.
The PM is very concerned at what he’s heard. He’s writing to Riven Vincent and in conjunction he’s also asked her local MP for all the details of the case urgently. The six hours of respite the family get costs £15 an hour. It would cost the local authority more than £2,000 a week, if Celyn went into a residential home. Ms Vincent, who sleeps next to Celyn alongside a breathing monitor, told The Guardian she wanted to continue to care for her daughter at home. “I don’t want her in a residential care home – it would destroy me. But without extra help, I find it hard to see how we can meet her needs at home,” she told the paper. When she shared her fears online that her daughter would have to go into residential care, it ricocheted around the internet. On Wednesday, she wrote on Mumsnet: “Have asked SS (social services) to take DD (dear daughter) into care... I can’t cope.” In less than 24 hours, she received more than 1,450 replies. Mr Cameron’s eldest son Ivan had severe disabilities and died in 2009 at the age of six. A Downing Street spokesman said the Prime Minister “of all people is acutely aware of how difficult it is to bring up a disabled child”. He continued: “The Prime Minister is very concerned at what he’s heard. “He’s writing to Riven Vincent and in conjunction he’s also asked her local MP for all the details of the case urgently. “He’s also asking the MP to speak to the local council to make sure that she’s receiving all that she’s entitled to.”
Toddler savaged by family dog A two-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after being mauled by her family's dog. The toddler was attacked by the animal, believed to be a Japanese Akita in Hailsham, East Sussex. A Sussex Police spokesman said: "The injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

"The dog has been destroyed at the request of her family." Police believe the infant was bitten on her lip either in her family home or the home of relatives. Her parents were by her bedside in hospital. A spokesman for South
East Coast Ambulance Service said: "Staff attended the incident at 8.15pm yesterday. It is understood the child was mauled by the family pet. "The toddler was taken to hospital under blue lights, however, we don't believe the injuries are life-threatening."

Suspect arrested over Joanna Yeates murder A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering Joanna Yeates, as detectives seal off the back of her flat for further investigation. The suspect was taken into custody early yesterday (Thursday) and Sky News’ Katie Stallard has said it is unlikely Avon and Somerset Police will release his name to the public. She said detectives will not say where he was arrested, whether he was known to the landscape architect, or whether this is a new development. Since the arrest, scaffolding and tarpaulins have been put up around the back of Joanna’s flat as the investigation continues. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Jones, the senior investigating officer, said: “I would like to thank the public for their continued support for the investigation and the information they have provided to us. “I would also like to pay tribute to Jo’s family and to Greg who continue to be unfailing in their support to me and my team at what is an incredibly difficult and painful time for them.” The arrest comes just days after Joanna’s parents Theresa
and David Yeates appealed to the country’s “armchair detectives” to help find their daughter’s killer. In a joint statement, the couple said: “If you do know something and you do not come forward you are consciously hampering the apprehension of Jo’s killer and the perpetrator is still free.” Stallard says police have had 304 phone calls and emails since that appeal was made. Upon hearing the news of the arrest, Joanna’s father David, 63, said: “We are pleased that the investigation is moving forward.
“We know as much as you do. We were told at 6am this morning that someone was arrested on suspicion of Jo’s murder and their age.” Joanna’s last journey has also been filmed for a television reconstruction that is expected to be aired on Crimewatch next week. The 25-year-old went missing on December 17 after having drinks with work colleagues and walking home to the flat she shared with her boyfriend Greg Reardon, aged 27, in Clifton. Her body was found on Longwood Lane, Failand, North
Somerset, on Christmas Day, sparking a huge police operation. A post mortem examination showed she had been strangled. Detectives have said there was no evidence Joanna had been sexually assaulted but they have not ruled out a sexual motive. Her landlord Chris Jefferies, 65, was held for three days for questioning on suspicion of murder before being released on bail pending further inquiries. Stallard added that police have confirmed he remains a suspect.
CCTV: Dad and son fight off armed robbers CCTV footage has been released of a shopkeeper and his son battling two armed robbers who police believe carried out another raid just minutes before. Two men, one carrying a gun and the other a knife, entered the store in Finsbury Park in North London at 9.45pm, on December 21. They demanded cash from the till but the shopkeeper’s

25-year-old son grabbed hold of one of the intruders after he held the gun to his father’s head. All four men then became involved in a struggle in which the robbers repeatedly tried to stab the 46-year-old man, and his son was hit with the gun. The brawl continued into the street before the criminals fled the scene empty-handed. Police believe they may have
made their escape in a dark coloured Vauxhall Astra. The victims were taken to hospital but luckily only required treatment for cuts and bruises. Flying Squad Officers are appealing for information as they believe the two men were also involved in a second robbery at a shop in the Kentish Town area of the capital.
Wikipedia celebrates its 10th anniversary WIKIPEDIA, the San Francisco-based online encyclopedia which pioneered a new way to share information, has reached its 10-year milestone. The free content project was launched by US entrepreneur Jimmy Wales on its own domain, wikipedia.org. “I remember that first day,” said Mr Wales in his speech marking the anniversary. “I clicked on edit and I wrote ‘Hello World’ and that was the beginning of Wikipedia and all the things that have come since then.” The site was set up as an offshoot of Nupedia because editors on that website were unhappy about the idea of allowing users to add or edit content; that website closed in 2003. Wikipedia was the first site to allow the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser. The site has a presence in dozens of countries It used a simplified markup language or a WYSIWYG -
what you see is what you get - text editor. To date, Wikipedia has more that 3.5 million articles and nearly 23 million pages in total. The company relies on some 100,000 regular contributors who work for free and the general public to write and edit its articles in 270 languages. The site carries 17 million articles in English, adding 1,100 per day. Wikipedia allows almost anyone to add or alter entries without oversight. Despite this its accuracy is considered to be high, with information often updated before the news has been made public elsewhere. The website says its quality controls stop most “vandals” from posting maliciously inaccurate articles for very long. However, it does warn: “Some articles on Wikipedia may contain significant factual inaccuracies, ie information that is verifiably wrong.” It intends to keep its status as a non-profit organisation, despite money men seeing it as a huge opportunity for making millions through advertising.

Baby boy orphaned as parents die in car crash
A six-month-old baby has been orphaned after a horrific motorway car crash killed both of his parents and his grandfather. Logan Padden and his grandmother Suzanne Padden, 51 survived the smash on the M4, near Cardiff, south Wales on Monday night. The child’s young parents Louise Evans, 23, and Thomas Padden, 20, died along with Stephen Padden, who was 56. It is believed the family, from Porthcawl, were travel-
ling back from Gatwick airport after returning from holiday in Morocco. It is thought the crash happened when their red Peugeot 406 lost control. No other vehicles were involved. Suzanne Padden and her grandson are still being treated at University Hospital, Cardiff - but are in a stable condition. Neighbours living close to Neville Road, where the family lived, reacted with shock to news of the tragedy. Francis Williams said: “Oh my God. I simply can’t believe it. The poor, poor family, my heart goes out to them. The baby, oh God.”
Apple profits up as boss Jobs has medical leave APPLE says its latest profits were $6bn - a 78% rise on a year ago - which may help ease investor concern after boss Steve Jobs decided to take medical leave. The tech giant’s figures were better than expected and were helped by impressive sales of the iPhone and iPad over the Christmas period. Apple says it sold over seven million iPads, about a million more than predicted, and also shifted more than 16 million iPhones in the first quarter which ended on December 25 2010. The $6bn (£3.76bn) profit figure, or $6.43 per share, compared with $3.4bn (£2.13bn), or $3.67 per share, for the same period a year earlier. Analysts had forecasted $5.41 per share for the latest quarter. The figures were announced after regular trading ended, which saw the company’s share price close down 2.3% at $340.65 on the Nasdaq. But the shares then rose
1.9% to $347.57 in extended trading after the release of the results. The company is firing on all cylinders. The iPad continues to be a game changer. Chief executive Mr Jobs’ decision to temporarily leave the firm comes two years after he took a six-month break during which he underwent a liver transplant. In his latest statement, the 55-year-old did not say how long he expected to be away or provide any details about his latest health issues. Chief operating officer Tim Cook will look after the firm’s day-to-day operations in his absence. Colin Gillis, analyst at BGC Partners, said the latest Apple
profits were “crazy good”. He added: “The company is firing on all cylinders. The 7.3 million iPads, that is a great number, that is about one million more than people are looking for.” On Mr Jobs’ health, Mr Gillis said: “Steve is an important part of what Apple is, everyone wants to know does the company fall apart? No. “More data is always better than less (on health issues). But nonetheless they disclosed what they are going to disclose consistent with patterns.” In an email to Apple employees, Mr Jobs said: “At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can
focus on my health.” “I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company,” the e-mail read. Mr Jobs added: “I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011. “I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.” The company’s fortunes have been uniquely linked to its CEO, who returned to the company in 1997 after a 12year absence to turn around the flagging tech giant with innovative and wildly successful products like the iPod and iPhone. Mr Jobs underwent an operation in 2004 for pancreatic cancer, which was kept under wraps until years later. Questions about his health have resurfaced periodically since the cancer diagnosis, and have been the subject of much debate among corporate governance experts over the obligations the company has to its shareholders.
Hole lot of problems on Britain’s streets THE AA has revealed which parts of the UK are deemed to have the worst potholes. The motoring organisations members have recorded potholes, damaged kerbs, uneven pavements, badly parked vehicles, litter, dog mess and worn road markings near their homes. Streets in Kilmarnock, in East Ayrshire, and Telford, in Shropshire, were found to have the worst potholes. Streets in Liverpool and Paisley in Scotland were adjudged the worst for litter and dog fouling. The survey concluded that London streets had the least potholes and patches, while those in Berwick, in Northumberland, were the cleanest in the UK. The most serious problem
Page 14
nationwide was considered to be potholes, while the most reported “bad street item” was litter. Overall, Welsh streets were the best and those in northeast England were the worst.
AA president Edmund King said: “We shall share the results with local highway authorities to support our campaign for more investment in local streets and paths. “The surveys will also pro-
vide a regular benchmark of community issues in the light of local authority budget cutbacks. “Neglect of these areas has a significant impact on how people feel about where they live.”

MARIANO E ZUNINO SIRI Understanding the Law Email: marianozunino@canarianweekly.com
THE anti-smoking law is still a huge debating point everywhere, especially concerning those small bars, pubs, restaurants with no terrace, and those with outdoor smoking areas in mainland Spain. Some people referred to my last article saying; “a wall is a wall irrespective of what the law says.” I said the Law defined the meaning of “empty space” but did not do the same with the meaning of “wall”). According to this point of view, it does not make any difference what the Authority says because the concept of “wall” is quite simple to understand. Every Law has to define the concepts to be included in it, in order to avoid misunderstandings (it is supposed to be done in favour of the citizens). This means that, in case of doubt, the rule is favourable to the citizen (I refer to Public Law). This is one of the general Law principles. However, the Administration some-
Cloud over Anti-Smoking Law times does not apply this rule, or it does otherwise, For example: the owner of a bar and a terrace with two walls (left and right), a canopy and a one-metre-high wall in the front of the terrace, believes the last one does not count as a proper wall and lets clients smoke. The Authority says that the low wall counts as a third wall and, consequently, people in there are smoking illegally. That means he will, subsequently, be fined. I will give you another example with Traffic Law, using the same point of view. A car is a “car” and there is no doubt about it. The differences between a motorbike car, truck or bus are quite simple to understand (all of them are motor vehicles but every each one needs a different type of driving licence). To drive a motorbike you need an “A” licence and to drive a car you need a “B”
21 January 2011 - 27 January 2011
version. If you think that four wheels is a car and two wheels a motorbike, what happens with quads? When quads appeared on the streets, there was a dispute with the Authorities regarding the licence needed to drive them. This matter has now been sorted. The law (Traffic law, cannot be extremely definitive and gives a general idea. For specific cases, only the Court can rule in such a case. The group of judgements forms the jurisprudence (see my article about Spanish Law System and European Law system). You may have read in newspapers, or seen on TV, that there are lots of “rebels against the Anti-Smoking Law.. Many owners of bars or restaurants lost several clients because of this unfair law, but decided to smoke, or let customers smoke anyway. Let me remind you that I do
not smoke, but it does not affect my opinion that this law does not protect the rights of everybody. In many cases, these bars are displaying signs - one saying that smoking is forbidden and another one apologising for the inconvenience. Hotel industry entrepreneurs have created a platform against the law. One owner in Nigrán (Galicia) has parked a “smoking-van” in front of his restaurant with six seats, table, heater for his customers, who can cross the street, get into the truck and enjoy a drink, smoke and chat. The idea comes from London, where many restaurants have parked “smoking buses” near their places. But the Spanish “rebels” are facing a big problem, and not only those who suffer a judgement in favour of the Administration. Those who may eventually win their case
still have to pay the fine in the first place. According to Spanish Law, if you are “forfeited” you have to first pay (or guarantee the payment with bank guarantees) and appeal the fine (if you do not agree with it). If the Court decides that you are right, then the Administration must refund the monies you paid. To be a “rebel” could cost the rebels a fortune because, whether unfair or not, the law is the law and the hands of the judges could be tied. The solution is to change the law (a task for the same Legislative Power which approved this law). I hope this happens soon, especially because fines up to 600,000 euros are completely unreasonable. And if you think that this fine may not be applied, you ought to listen to the opinion of the first “rebel” restaurant, in Marbella.
The restrictive, anti-smoking laws have been revoked in many European countries, such as Holland, Croatia, Greece and Bulgaria), while others enforce the law rigidly. Ireland and Spain have the most restrictive laws. In Ireland, the consequences created a lot of harm as the hotel industry decreased by up to 10.4% in 2006 (according to Central Statistics Office Ireland”). The law is not so “hard” in the UK but, according to the British Beer & Pub Association, from July 2007 until the end of 2009, more than 3,000 pubs closed, which adds up to 5% of the total there). Pulp Fiction Sunday 23 January 11:25pm - 1:50am BBC2 While not as abrasive or compelling as Reservoir Dogs, this follow-up confirmed Quentin Tarantino's genius for writing hard-boiled comic dialogue. It also demonstrated a control over a wealth of characters and crossplots that was simply astonishing for a film-maker still, essentially, in the process of learning his trade. Originally called Black Mask, the picture went on to scoop the Palme d'Or at the Cannes film festival and win Oscars for Tarantino and his co-writer Roger Avary. Scorching though the writing is, it needed a high-calibre cast to carry it off. Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Maria de Medeiros and Christopher Walken are excellent, but the revitalised John Travolta and the then largely unknown Samuel L Jackson are unforgettable. As much pop as pulp, this is exhilarating stuff and clearly one of the best films of the 1990s. 21 January 2011 - 27 January 2011

NEW SERIES. Jeremy Clarkson subjects the Skoda Yeti to a thorough examination, while Richard Hammond charts the evolution of the Porsche 911 by pitting the current Turbo cabriolet against its oldest relative - and the power of gravity. James May takes the Ariel Atom V8 for a spin on the test track, another celebrity gets behind the wheel of the Reasonably Priced Car, and the Cool Wall returns to start yet more arguments in the studio. Top Gear history Top Gear began in 1977 as a conventional motoring magazine show. Over time, and especially since its relaunch in 2002, it has developed a quirky, humorous style. The show is currently presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May,
Page 26
and has featured two different test drivers known as The Stig. The programme is estimated to have 350 million viewers worldwide. The show has received acclaim for its visual style and presentation, as well as considerable criticism for its content and comments made by presenters. Jeremy Clarkson, who helped the original series reach its peak in the 1990s, along with producer Andy Wilman, successfully pitched a new format for Top Gear to the BBC, reversing a previous decision to cancel the show in 2001. The new series was first broadcast in 2002. Top Gear’s studio is located at Dunsfold Aerodrome and business park in Waverley, Surrey. Top Gear uses a temporary racing circuit which was designed
for the show by Lotus and is laid out on parts of Dunsfold’s runways and taxiways. A large hangar is used for studio recording with a standing audience. The new series format incorporates a number of major changes from the old show. The running time was extended to one hour and two new presenters were introduced: Richard Hammond and Jason Dawe, with James May replacing Dawe after the first series. The Stig, an anonymous, helmeted racing driver, was introduced as the test driver. New segments were also added, including “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car”, “The Cool Wall”, “The News”, “Power Laps”, and one off features such as races, competitions and the regular destruction of caravans and, more recently, Morris Marinas.

Marking the directorial debut of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels producer Matthew Vaughn, this decent enough British crime thriller is done few favours by its nondescript title. Daniel Craig plays a rising young drug dealer whose ambition is to make
some quick money and then retire early to enjoy it. His plans - involving a massive shipment of ecstasy are complicated by drugs lord Kenneth Cranham, who asks him to find the wayward daughter of an associate (dodgy businessman Michael Gambon). The
performances are good, and Vaughn directs with assuredness and aplomb, but there’s an over-familiarity about the subject matter that suggests it’s time for Vaughn and his crime-movie contemporaries to seek inspiration elsewhere.

An Island Parish 11:20pm , BBC2 Say hello to a new sibling in the Parish family of programmes (following A Country Parish, A Seaside Parish and the long-running Island Parish series set in the Scilly Isles). This time we’re nipping off to Barra, one of the most southerly islands of the Outer Hebrides, where genial young Roman Catholic priest Father John
Page 28
Paul MacKinnon has been posted. Supporting him are neighbouring priests Father Roddy McAuley and 83-yearold Father Calum MacLellan. As with its predecessors, very little happens. Father Roddy - an exuberant character worth keeping your eye on - crows about his flock of hens, the manager of the community-owned
shop shares a little joke with Father Calum, and the ladies of Barra press home-made soup and sandwiches on their new priest. But the locals seem promising especially Aggie, who scavenges on the seashore because “it tastes better when it’s free”. It’s all very amiable and the scenery is stunning.

Match of the Day Live 7:30pm, BBC2
Arsenal v Ipswich Town (Kick-off 7.45pm). Gary Lineker presents coverage of the League Cup semifinal second leg at the Emirates Stadium. Paul Jewell’s Tractor Boys recorded a shock 1-0 win in the first leg, with Tamas Priskin scoring the goal in the 78th minute. Arsenal will still feel they have what it takes to progress, but their recent League Cup record leaves a lot to be desired, having appeared in the final just once since their last victory in 1993. With commentary by Steve Wilson and Mark Bright.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Pleasure and Pain with Michael Mosley
9:00pm, Channel 5
10:35pm, BBC1
A decapitated man is found entangled in a barbed wire fence in the woods, and further investigation prompts Ray and Nick to suspect he was a member of a group of fanatical vampire role-players. The victim’s friends refuse to co-operate with the detectives, but hint that he might have met his end at the hands of a rival faction of would-be werewolves. Crime drama, guest starring Max Beesley.
The journalist and presenter examines why pleasure and pain are integral to human survival, submitting himself to some of the most extreme forms of both sensations. He reveals how the hottest chilli in the world creates a sense of euphoria in the brain, and explains the biological reasons why parents feel a surge of love for newborn children. He also exposes himself to painful experiments, highlighting the dangers of life without discomfort and discovering how far he is prepared to go to experience one of the world’s most pleasurable highs.

First-time nominee Dermot features in the entertainment presenter shortlist for his work on The X Factor, which takes on Strictly Come Dancing, Britain’s Got Talent and Dancing on Ice for the title of best talent show. Sherlock and Doctor Who are named in the line-up of the nation’s favourite dramas, and Benedict

Cumberbatch and Matt Smith are also nominated for their performances as the title characters in those series. Glee, Peter Andre and The Inbetweeners battle it out in the digital choice category, while soap stars Katherine Kelly, Steve McFadden, Lacey Turner and Danny Miller compete to win best serial drama performance. The National Television Awards is a British television awards ceremony, broadcast by the ITV network and initiated in 1995. The National Television Awards are the most prominent ceremony for which the results are voted on by the general public. Because of the way the awards are decided, winners are not given the title “Best”, but rather “Most Popular”. The ceremony was traditionally held annu-
ally in October and hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald. However, after no ceremony was held in 2009, McDonald stepped down from the role, which passed to Dermot O’Leary. The January 2010 ceremony was hosted at the O2 arena. 2011 is the 16th awards and this year’s categories include:- Outstanding Serial Drama Performance, Outstanding Drama Performance, Topical Magazine Programme Most Popular Drama, Most Popular Serial Drama, Most Popular Entertainment Programme, Digital Choice, Most Popular Entertainment Presenter, Most Popular Talent Show, Most Popular Comedy Programme, Most Popular Factual Programme, Most Popular Newcomer and the annual Special Recognition Award.

Justin Lee Collins: Turning Japanese
6:00pm ............................Eggheads
9:00pm, Channel 5 NEW SERIES. Justin Lee Collins heads east to learn more about Japanese culture, beginning with an exploration of love and relationships. In Tokyo, he visits a store specialising in women’s underwear adapted for male proportions, demonstrates his pulling technique in a dating class, investigates the world of `love dolls’, and gets a sleek new look to spend the evening as an escort. According to his official webpage Justin Lee Collins
is from Bristol – he started out as a stand up comedian in his late teens, and then moved on to as a presenter on a number of TV shows. From 2003 - 2005 he hosted his own radio show on XFM. Collins was one half of the famous duo presenting The Sunday Night Project (previously named The Friday Night Project) alongside Alan Carr for Channel 4. He has also hosted the specials on Channel 4 entitled Bring Back... reuniting the cast
from famous shows or films such as Dallas, Star Wars and Fame as well as presenting a series for Channel 4 entitled The Convention Crasher, in which he learned skills such as clowning and ventriloquism in an attempt to win prizes at professional conventions. 2009 saw him taking on challenges to become a Mexican Wrestler, a Surfer, a Ballroom Dancer, a Ten Pin Bowler, a High Diver and a West End Star and the fantastic ‘On a Mission’.
island of Summersisle to look for her missing daughter. There he stumbles upon a matriarchal society of bee-keepers, led by Ellen Burstyn, that’s engaged in some disturbing pagan May Day rituals. No longer a chaste Christian (as in the original movie), instead Cage’s character is allergic
to bees - a meaningless plot change if ever there was one. Adapting Anthony Shaffer’s screenplay, LaBute’s version is both dumbed and dulled down, culminating in a laughably over-explained finale. You’re better off sticking with the magical, musical and menacing original.

The Wicker Man 10:00pm, Channel 5 The 1973 British cult classic here gets a glossy, expensive and utterly pointless remake courtesy of writer/director Neil LaBute. Yes, size does matter! THE sofa is one of the most important items of furniture in the home - it certainly is in mine! Modern lives have changed, and we actually spend more time sat on the sofa than was previously the case. This is because we can now use this area for many more activities. For example, the advent of laptop computers and wireless connections means that some of the family can be surfing the internet, while others are watching television or reading. I’m showing my age, because in my day there were only four TV channels. Nowadays, with numerous satellite channels, and pretty much TV on demand, it is tempting to spend more and more time on that sofa! And lots of families eat separately or snack in front of the telly (not me, obviously!). This all means more time on the sofa, and it is obvious that the place where you spend so much time should be both comfortable and durable. But when it comes to replacing your sofa, it’s not always simple to find exactly what you want. And size does matter! Any mistakes can be very expensive. Buy too big a sofa and it will look out of proportion in the room. Buy too small, and you won’t be comfortable and often, the space you have may be limited as well. Deco Nuevo have a wide range of sofas and sofa

beds, of excellent quality and comfort and reasonable prices. Those we sell are
made here in Tenerife, and we have been working with the same manufacturer for
more than 20 years. Because they are made locally, we are able to decide on the density of the cushions, the style, the material and, most importantly, the size! We are able to make sofas to order without any increase in price, and within about 10 days. Mrs Amos, who owns a property in Las Brisas, came into the shop this week. She wanted to buy a corner sofa. She had spent various holidays looking around to find a style she liked that would fit her property, and in a colour to suit her other decorative items. And, of course, the right size! When she came to see us, we were able to tell her that we could make her a corner sofa exactly to her specifica-
tions. She was also able to choose the density of the cushions to ensure they suited her, the style of the sofa and the exact size she required, plus the colour and texture of the upholstery. If clients are unsure about their choice, we often go to their property to ensure that the new sofa will fit, and to check the tone of the material chosen against fixtures and fittings, including floor tiles. But Mrs Amos knew exactly what she wanted, and her sofa is being made specifically to her requirements. Her sofa will be ready in about 10 days, and kept in storage until she returns to Tenerife, when she can take immediate delivery. There is no extra cost for
making the sofa to order, and the lead time for delivery (about 10 days) is not affected. We also have other clients who need sofa beds, but have limited space available. Most sofa beds range in length between 1.90 to 2.20 metres. In this case, the clients have only 1.85cm available, so the upholsterer will make some minor adjustments to the frame and the width of the arms, to make sure it fits. There is no extra charge for this service, either. If you are thinking of replacing your sofa, call in to Deco Nuevo, to see our wide range of sofas made to order. You will be pleasantly surprised by the prices!

DAVID HUDGELL Getting to the root of your gardening problems! Email: David.hudgell@canarianweekly.com
Viburnum Beetle is Patio time our biggest bugbear
THE viburnum beetle is the most annoying gardening pest, according to a survey by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Enquiries from RHS members were compiled and analysed to see which bugs were mentioned most, and the viburnum took the top spot after toppling last year’s winners - slugs and snails . from first place. Garden specialist Andrew Halstead said the insect had frequently been in the rankings, but had never appeared so prominently. “They do seem to have become more troublesome,” he said, adding that the damage they do to evergreen viburnums “is more apparent because it can be seen all-year-round”. Other culprits included chafer grubs, vine weevils and harlequin ladybirds - the latter highlighted as particu-
larly troublesome because it over-winters as an adult beetle in garden buildings. The rosemary beetle and scarlet lily beetle were recently named as leading causes of concern for gardeners, despite them being native to Europe and Asia. Attacks by the viburnum beetle can result in severe defoliation of some Viburnum species, especially V. tinus and V. opulus. Viburnum beetle is a defoliating pest of some Viburnum species. Most of the damage is caused by the larvae in late spring, but some further feeding damage is done by the adult beetles in late summer. Heavy attacks can result in most of the foliage being severely damaged in late spring. Damaged leaves are discoloured with brown, dried-up edges to the holes created by the adult beetles and larvae, especially on Viburnum tinus. This shrub often produces an unpleasant smell when
21 January 2011 - 27 January 2011
the damaged foliage becomes wet. An attack of viburnum beetle results in: · Holes eaten in the leaves, with the larger leaf veins remaining, giving the foliage a lace-doily appearance · Creamy yellow larvae, with black markings and up to 8mm long, are present on plants in April to early June · Greyish brown adult beetles, 4.5-6mm long, feed on the leaves from late July to September · Control · Non-chemical control Larvae are normally too numerous to hand-pick, so attacks may have to be tolerated. You should inspect susceptible viburnums during the spring for signs of feeding on the new foliage. This will indicate when the over-wintered eggs are hatching. If necessary, spray the plants with deltamethrin (Bayer Sprayday Greenfly Killer), lambda-cyhalothrin (Westland Plant Rescue Fruit & Vegetable Bug Killer) or
thiacloprid (Bayer Provado Ultimate Bug Killer). Organic gardeners can use pyrethrum (Py Spray Garden Insect Killer, Doff All-in-One Bug Spray, Scotts Bug Clear Gun for Fruit & Veg). Pyrethrum should control newly-hatched larvae, but it will be less successful against the adult beetles. The best time to spray is when the newly-hatched larvae are feeding on the new foliage in mid-April to early May. Treatment in mid-summer is really too late as the worst of the damage has already been done. The Viburnum beetle overwinters as eggs, which are deposited in the bark of the stems in late summer. These eggs hatch in late Aprilearly May and the larvae begin feeding on the new foliage. When fully fed in late MayJune, the larvae go into the soil to pupate. Adult beetles emerge in late summer and, after mating, deposit batches of over-wintering eggs in the woody stems.
Spiky pots 1 palm, such as a spiky Dasylirion acrotrichum Large metal pot Crocks Free-draining succulent or cactus Less is definitely more when it comes to this spectacular container. The spiky dasylirion makes a huge impact on its own - other plants would just be a distraction. Rather like a natural fibre optic light, its bristling leaves are dramatically set off when the fibrous tips are backlit by the sun. Put a layer of crocks in the bottom of the container, then half fill it with gritty compost. Knock the palm from its pot and stand it on the compost in the centre of the container. Top it up with compost, firming it around the rootball with your fingers. Finish with a decorative mulch of gravel or pebbles. The dasylirion hates being waterlogged, especially in winter, so don’t overwater it, and raise the pot on pot feet so it doesn’t sit in a puddle. Scented edibles Wandering around the garden centre at the weekend they have a good selection of herbs available, so why not plant up a pot. • 1 serrated-leafed lavender, Lavandula x christiana • 1 woolly thyme, Thymus pseudolanuginosus
• 1 golden-leafed sage, such as Salvia officinalis ‘Icterina’ • 1 rosemary, such as Rosmarinus officinalis Prostratus Group • Wide terracotta pot, crocks, free-draining compost, horticultural grit or sand Most herbs originate in hot, dry climates like our own here in Tenerife. Growing them in pots is therefore perfect here as many of us live in apartments. Serrated-leaved lavender is an attractive alternative to ordinary lavender and looks wonderful planted with woolly thyme, golden-leafed sage and low-growing rosemary. Cover the bottom of the pot with crocks, then fill it twothirds with compost, mixed with a few handfuls of horticultural grit or sand. Arrange the plants in the pot in any order you like. Top up with compost, firming it around the roots with your fingers. Stand the pot somewhere in full sun.
Budget branches Just a small selection of money saving ideas • Check with your local garden centre, veg/fruit shop for discarded planting trays, used disposable pots, etc. - recycle them by using them in your own gardening efforts! • When you buy produce in little baskets (like berries, cherry tomatoes, etc.), save the baskets & use them for organizing around the house or garden, or even for seed starting planters. • Grow your own plant supports for tomatoes and climbing vegetables and flowers. Chances are there’s a variety of bamboo that will grow well! • Check with your local shops for wooden crates (they usually dismantle and throw away). They can be used for organizing, for winter storage of your crops in your cellar, or as planters!
• Keep your melons from rotting as they ripen by placing a flat stone (or concrete) beneath the fruit. • Water your seedlings less with a homemade irrigation system. Simply stretch out a layer of plastic (like a plastic bin bag) and place layers of newspaper on top. Then set your seedling pots on top. Excess water seeps out of the pots into the newspaper, going no further than the plastic. As the soil dries, the moisture is whisked back up into the planters. When done, reuse the newspapers in your compost pile or worm farm. • Recycle egg cartons as seedling starters! When its time to plant, just separate the sections with a knife or scissors and plant directly into the soil. (The cardboard will decompose into your garden.

‘Man flu’ not a myth insist The smooth operators research team CARL PATTISON
from Robot, answers your hair questions
Email: carl.pattison@canarianweekly.com
THERE’S one thing for sure this season (as predicted last October): we are all going to have to learn to use our hairdryers again.
Out goes any form of spike, texture, or bouffant and in comes smooth shiny, bouncy, swingy, edgy-looking hair. Sharp lines and dramaticallygraduated shapes come to the forefront this year. Heavy, solid fringes, asymmetrical bobs and the beret (as in the hat) – these forms of short styles will be seen this season. If it is from the early Eighties, then it’s going to be seen big time. We’ve all been used to employing our straighteners for the last 10 years (yes they really are that old), but don’t throw them away. Use them to smooth out your hair, but not as you would normally to give you a poker-straight look. Instead, use them to “turn under” your hair as in a hairbrush movement. Think of using them to form the letter J. Your hairdryer should be used to flatten and turn under your new cut, but don’t give your hair any lift: think smoooooth! Start by drying off your hair roughly with your hairdryer, always pointing down, and never upwards as this roughs up your hair. Take medium sections of hair that has been dried to at least 80%. Any wetter and you’re wasting your time because hair never takes shape until at least 75% dry. You should be using a large, flat, paddle brush or a large
Page 40
bristle brush. Large means the size of a coke can diameter. Point the hairdryer at the brush, leaving a few inches between it and the brush in a continuous movement. Never hold the dryer on one section of your hair but keep it moving. When totally dry, blast your hair with the cool shot button, which really gives you hold and shine. When at the salon, you need to be asking for the following cuts: blunt, levelled, graduated, asymmetrical etc. All these methods are designed to give you a simple, yet effective, shape to your hair. These styles are the most
difficult for a stylist to achieve as they use precisioncutting techniques to guarantee that your hair will always fall into place. Finish off your new cut with a block colour (that’s one shade applied all over the head) to create maximum shine and definition to the style. Don’t be thinking, either, that this year’s new look will take lots of time to create. With the right cut, your hair will keep falling back into place after blow-drying. Check out my examples to see if this could work for you. If you want “easy”, then these styles are for you.
Women may laugh about “man flu” but the condition is no myth, according to scientists in South Korea. The condition is defined by the Wiktionary online dictionary as “a cold or similar ailment as suffered by a male seen as wildly exaggerating the severity of his symptoms”. It is often the source of amusement for some women. But a study found it could be caused by work stress and be confined to men rather than women, who seem to be
more stoical about such matters. “Any association between work-related stress and the common cold may be accentuated in males by their reaction to experiencing a cold and attenuated in females by their more stoical response,” the researchers wrote in the journal Occupational Medicine. We need to remove the stigma associated with psychological health conditions. The scientists studied 1,200 manual workers from 40 different companies in Incheon, South Korea. They found men with demanding jobs were 74%
more likely to report having cold symptoms than those under less pressure. The chances of being ill were raised by 42% among men with “insufficient job control” and by 40% among those with “inadequate social support”. But the researchers could find no significant association between stress factors and cold complaints among women. In the UK, stress and depression are the biggest longterm cause of work absenteeism, affecting a quarter of all employees. Stress and depression are the biggest long-term cause of work absenteeism in the UK, with 25% of all employees affected. Dr Olivia Carlton, of the Society of Occupational Medicine, said: “Stress of any kind, including work-related stress, may affect your immune system and be a potential risk factor for the common cold and other illnesses - further studies on this are needed. “We need to remove the stigma associated with psychological health conditions they are common and can happen to anyone at any time in their life. “There are solutions and it’s important that staff feel able to seek support.”

Sun cream is big factor in girl’s lack of vitamin D
IT is incredible to think that those first few puffs on a cigarette can cause genetic damage, linked to cancer, in just a few minutes.
A MOTHER has recounted how smothering her daughter with sun cream helped to create a vitamin D deficiency. Lisa Attrill, from the Isle of Wight, wanted to ensure that Tyler, her 12-year-old daughter was protected from the sun’s harmful rays, so she used factor 50 sun protection on her regularly. But Tyler was diagnosed with the deficiency when she was slow to recover from an unrelated operation on her leg. If it had gone undetected, it could have led to her suffering from rickets. Her mother said: “I used factor 50 to prevent the sun getting to her. When I was talking to the doctor about the deficiency, he asked if I had used sun cream on her. When I said yes, he said, ‘There you go then’. It’s the only thing we can come up with as to why she has had this.” Mrs Attrill added that the condition had left her daughter suffering aches and pains
In what US researchers describe as a “stark warning to smokers”, they say: The effect is so fast that it’s equivalent to injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream.” Their new study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, is the first on humans to track how substances in tobacco cause DNA damage. Scientists using 12 volunteer smokers tracked pollutants called PAHs, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are carried in tobacco smoke and can also be found in coal-burning plants and in charred barbecue food. They followed phenanthrene, one particular type found in cigarette smoke, through the blood and saw it form a toxic substance known to “trash DNA, causing mutations that can cause cancer”. “The smokers developed maximum levels of the substance in a time frame that surprised even the researchers: just 15-30 min-
in her legs. But Tyler was treated with multi-vitamin tablets, and recent blood tests proved that her levels were back to normal. Last November, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon said that 20% of children he had checked for bone problems showed signs of rickets. Professor Nicholas Clarke, of Southampton General Hospital, examined more than 200 children from that area for problems caused by a lack of vitamin D. He was “astonished” by the result, and said it was reminiscent of 17th century England. The disease has been on the rise across the UK because of poor diet, and children not being allowed outside. Normally, the body takes in vitamin D in the form of sunsynthesis through the skin. But eggs and oily fish such as mackerel contain the vitamin, and those deficient in it can suffer weak and bowed bones.
Not always something to get your teeth into! TRADING standards officials issued a public warning after excessive levels of hydrogen peroxide were found in some teeth-whitening products. The East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s trading standards team urged people to take extra care after discovering that some products being used by beauticians and dentists contain 360 times the permitted level of hydrogen peroxide. The legal limit of hydrogen peroxide in a tooth-whitening product is 0.1%. The council’s trading standards team recently found products being used in the East Riding containing up to 36% hydrogen peroxide. It is commonly used in some hair-colouring preparations, as well as preparations designed to whiten teeth. But the use of hydrogen peroxide in excessive levels can cause damage to the enamel, according to the council. Yet there are alternative tooth-whitening methods

utes after the volunteers finished smoking,” said the study. “These results are significant because PAH diol epoxides react readily with DNA, induce mutations, and are considered to be ultimate carcinogens of multiple PAH in cigarette smoke.”
Lead scientist Stephen Hecht says the study is unique because it examines the effects of inhaling cigarette smoke, without interference from other sources of harm, such as pollution or a poor diet. “The results reported here should serve as a stark warn-
ing to those who are considering starting to smoke cigarettes,” adds Hecht. If this doesn’t put you off that first drag, then these figures might! Lung cancer kills about 3,000 people worldwide each day, and 90% of those deaths are attributable to cigarette smoking!
that do not involve hydrogen peroxide. Colin Briggs, trading standards manager, said: “While dentists and beauticians are professionals in their area of work, use of products containing in excess of 0.1% hydrogen peroxide is not permitted. “Those involved in the business of tooth-whitening should, for the safety of their clients, read the ingredients label on any product they propose to use before applying it to teeth. If it contains excessive amounts of hydrogen peroxide, it must not be used.” East Riding Council spokeswoman Jane Evison said: “It is good news that more people are interested in taking greater care of the appearance of their teeth. But whiter teeth should not be to the detriment of their health and wellbeing. “We want to highlight the need for people to make sure the products used on them are not going to cause damage to their health.”

Michelin chalks up 100 years on the UK roads THIS year’s Michelin Great Britain & Ireland Guide, now in the shops, is an extra-special edition because it marks its 100th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, each guide comes with a booklet recounting the publication’s glorious history. The first Michelin guide to the British Isles was published in 1911, to help intrepid motorists on their travels. It was dark-blue in colour and largely instructional, with information on road quality and how to change a tyre, as well as details on hotels and repair shops for the inevitable breakdowns. It ran for five editions, with a break because of the First World War, and continued in1922 until 1930. The current Great Britain and Ireland Guide was re-launched in 1974 and has been published every year since.
The new guide continues to respond to the needs of its readers. It recommends a large and diverse selection of hotels, guest-houses, restaurants and pubs in all price categories, and across every region of the UK and Ireland. The 1911 guide pointed out amenities such as central heating or electric light, but in 2011 it is more likely to highlight outstanding cooking and
exceptional wine lists in all price categories. Rebecca Burr, the new editor-in-chief, said: “This centenary edition underlines the UK’s greatest strength, which is the rich diversity and variety of its restaurants. “The country embraces all kinds of restaurants and every type of cuisine and the public’s appetite shows no signs of abating.”
She added: “There is no doubt that 2010 was a difficult year, but those hotels and restaurants which represented value for money, at whatever price, were the ones best-placed to weather the storm. “We found 12 new one-star restaurants, but also awarded 26 new Bib Gourmands, which our readers particularly appreciate for their moderate prices.”
Highlights in the 2011 guide include two new two-star restaurants, one with a French female chef, the other with a home-grown English chef: Hélène Darroze at The Connaught in London and Nathan Outlaw in Rock, Cornwall. New one-stars include the Pony & Trap in Chew Magna, proving that some of the best cooking can be found in our pubs.
London continues to show its range: new stars include Viajante and Petersham Nurseries Café, whose bucolic setting is in contrast to the ornate Galvin La Chapelle, another recipient. Also out now is the Michelin Guide London 2011, which provides extended text on London’s restaurants, with additional photographs and information on all starred establishments.
Try a bowl of soup for a change EVEN here in sunny Tenerife, we are experiencing cold evenings and even chillier early mornings. So why not turn to a tasty bowl of soup to warm yourself up? Soup can be used as a starter, or a main course, depending on the ingredients, and there’s nothing like a bowl of tasty soup, with chunks of fresh bread go dip into it, to satisfy your hunger. Soups have been around for centuries as a staple food in our diet, and a hearty chicken noodle soup is just the ticket
Page 42
to your way out of a cold or the flu. There are loads of types of soups, and many of the basic soups we grew up with have been altered over the years into many variations. And stock, the flavoured liquid, is important as it’s mainly used in the base of any soup. Stocks are prepared simply with a variety of ingredients, using water as the essential base. From there, your possi-
bilities are endless, from beef bones, chicken bones, to veggies such as onions, carrots, or celery. Anything that gets your juices flowing. Preparation When preparing your stock, one of the first things you must remember is to use cold water when you first start. Bring your stock to the boil, and then keep it to a low simmer. This will keep it from becoming cloudy. A word of advice: don’t add to many spices to your stock, and keep away from the salt because it causes the stock to become far too salty. You can always sprinkle salt on when you have ladled the soup out into bowls. Variations There are many variations
and types of stock, but to make it easy on yourself, stick to the main ingredients of beef, chicken and vegetable. Beef stock is best used with meat and bones at the same time, but keep away from tender cuts of meat, and stick to cubed chuck steak, or something along those lines. Soups have been around for centuries as a staple food in our diet, and a hearty chicken noodle soup is just the ticket to your way out of a cold or the flu. When it comes to chicken stock, it is best to use the entire whole chicken. Cut the chicken into standard equal pieces. You may also roast your chicken beforehand if you are leaning towards a browner chicken stock, rather than a pale version. As for vegetable stock, the classic mirepoix is used. This is simply a mixture of diced veggies, such as carrots, leeks, celery and onions, and is perfect stock for soups such as minestrone.

Sudoku - X
The rules of sudoku X are simple - just enter the numbers 1 - 9 once in each row, column and 3 x 3 square within the sudoku X puzzle grid. In addition to standard sudoku, the numbers must only occur once in each side of the 'X' that is marked on the grid. Use logic alone to deduce where each of these numbers must be placed in every cell of a puzzle. Don’t worry! We´ve kept in two original sudokus for you on the right.

Not only have you got the right support around you, but you also have that confidence you have been seeking to let those around you know how you really feel. You will soon find something that will nudge you

towards turning your world upside down. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) The recent efforts you have put into your work have ensured that those around you will support you in the changes you are about to make. Don’t take advantage of a loved one, though, who will be willing to do anything you ask, or you may end up with no space for yourself. But there is a way to solve those family stresses. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Stop and look around you because you’re not in a race. If you do not slow down, you will miss out on all fun that can be had. Be particularly careful of not missing out on an exciting romantic opportunity at the weekend because it won’t be offered a second time. SAGITTARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) As a fire sign, you tend to flare up from time to time, and the last month has seen you go through more changes than you have seen in quite some time. However, the trends now indicate that things are starting to slow down, and some sort of structure is essential. And someone close owes you an apology. C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) A rather arrogant mood is making certain people look at you in a new light, so you may want to stop and think about what you are really trying to say. Hard work is called for and teamwork is the key to a rewarding week, both financially and emotionally. Call for a full reading.

Delights of India INDIA’S popularity as a holiday destination has never been in doubt, but once again it’s seeing resurgence, more importantly as more than just a backpacking destination. This year, in fact next month, India plays host to the 2011 Cricket World Cup, a total of 49 matches hosted by Asian countries India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Within India the matches will be played in eight venues across the country, each holding its own delights for the inquisitive traveller. Golden Triangle The Golden Triangle is a classic introduction to India: if you’ve never been before, this is an ideal starting point. India‘s Golden Triangle is made up of the three mostvisited cities in the country’s north-west - Delhi, Agra and Jaipur - which are all connected to each other by good road and rail links. Together, these form a rough equilateral triangle, some 200-250km along each edge. The triangle gets its name “golden” for the extraordinary wealth of cultural and historical splendour on offer in each of the three cities. Jaipur, capital of the largelydesert state of Rajasthan, is home to some of Asia’s best bazaars. You could spend weeks in Delhi, the sprawling, fascinating Indian capital, and not see it all, while Agra, once the heart of the Moghul empire, boasts the unparalleled beauty of the Taj Mahal, which adorns the banks of the Yamuna river. Delhi has a young population and dynamic economy. Delhi’s chief “sight” is its street life. The teeming bazaars of imagination lie in “Old” Delhi, the city of the Moghuls, established in the 17th century and still largely Muslim: the immense Jama Masjid (Great Mosque) dominates the quarter. Its main thoroughfare, the tumultuous Chandni Chowk, the Red Fort, whose pristine lawns and lofty Moghul audience halls offer a tranquil haven. To the south, British-built New Delhi is a fascinating contrast, radiating out from the boutiques and cafés of Connaught Place: here, the dusty alleys are replaced by broad, arrow-straight boulevards and four-square monuments. The imperial mall, Rajpath, leads to the mighty
Page 44
arch of India Gate, designed by Edwin Lutyens in the 1920s. Agra and Jaipur both have sizeable numbers of Western tourists roaming around. Jaipur, as capital of Rajasthan, has a role as a commercial and administrative centre that has nothing to do with tourism, and a population of 2.5m. The city’s alluringly-frenetic old quarter is known as the Pink City after its redwashed buildings, packed with stalls selling everything from silk to milk. Of Jaipur’s numerous monuments, the Hawa Mahal - an ornate five-storey façade, designed to allow the women of the royal household to observe the street in anonymity - has become an icon of Rajasthani architecture. Completing the triangle, Agra - for all its monumental splendour - can be a trial, with the perpetual smog and the hard-sell hawking. It can at times feel like a swollen village: its parks and public spaces have an oddly-suburban ambience. Yet it boasts a stupendous Moghul fort in the city centre and is home to the beautiful Taj Mahal. The marble mausoleum is by far the most popular tourist site in India - and despite the hype and the cliché, it is an astounding and mesmerising building.
India is such a vast country that it is split into 28 states. Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat. It is the seventh-largest city and fifthlargest metropolis of India, with a city population of approximately 3.96 million and metro population of 5.41 million. Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati, the city is the administrative centre of Ahmedabad district. In colloquial Gujarati, the city is commonly called Amdavad. Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah to serve as the capital of the Gujarat Sultanate, and was named after him. Though incorporated into the Bombay Presidency during British rule, Ahmedabad remained the most important city in the Gujarat region. The city established itself as the home of a booming textile industry, which earned it the nickname the “Manchester of the East”. Ahmedabad enjoys a thriving cultural tradition, being the centre of Gujarati cultural activities and diverse traditions of different ethnic and religious communities. Popular celebrations and observances include Uttarayan - an annual kite-flying day on 14th and 15th January. The nine nights of Navratri are celebrated with people performing Garba -
the folk dance of Gujarat - at venues across the city. The festival of lights, Deepavali, is celebrated with the lighting of lamps in every house, the decorating the floors with the rangoli and the bursting of firecrackers. Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and was capital of British India until 1912. Situated on the banks of the Hooghly River (a distributary of the Ganges), Kolkata was arguably second only to London in administrative importance in the British Empire. The city lost its past glory and economic importance in the years following Indian independence. Once called a “dying city”, Kolkata is now undergoing a process of economic uplift and revival. New Delhi, the national capital territory of Delhi, is situated between the Himalayas and Aravalis Ranges in the heart of the Indian sub-continent. Delhi is considered one of the most historic capitals in the world, and two of its monuments - the Qutab Minar and Humayun’s Tomb - have been declared World Heritage Sites. Exploring Delhi is both rewarding and fascinating. The most-visited places include the majestic Red Fort, the historical Chandni Chowk, as well as Raj Ghat and Shanti Vana - modern structures
constructed after India’s Independence in 1947. The city was built and destroyed seven times and has been witness to the various events which have brought India through the history books. Present-day Delhi is built around the ruins of seven ancient cities. As a commercial hub, it has many shopping areas to offer tourists. Visit the upscale avenues of Connaught Place, or go to Delhi Haat for handicraft goods. Don’t forget to stop at Janpath Market for a variety of inexpensive, traditional and souvenir items to bring home to your friends and relatives. Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is the capital of the state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city of India, with an estimated metropolitan population of about 12 million (2005). Mumbai is almost overflowing with sights to see: fascinating culture, bustling city life and interesting landmarks. An abundance of outdoor markets and fine stores make this destination a shopper’s dream. The city is home to India’s film and television industry, known as Bollywood. Mumbai is also one of the rare cities to accommodate a national park, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, within its city limits. Bangalore is the capital of the state of Karnataka.
Known as the Garden City for its lush landscape, lakes and temperate climate, it represents India’s marriage of past and present aptly, standing at the very helm of the future. The Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, considered to be one of the most richly-diverse oases in south Asia, and Bangalore Palace, modelled on Windsor Castle, complete with fortified towers and turreted parapets, are two such examples. Likewise, the State Archaeological Museum and the Vishweshwariah Industrial and Technological Museum are home, respectively, to premier examples of Indian miniature paintings and other artifacts, and the latest technologic and scientific innovations. Numerous temples and shrines repose in the landscape, sharing the limelight with dozens of cinemas and theatres, also popular national pleasures. For recreation, Bangalore has many delightful shopping arenas, featuring exquisite silks, art and craftwork, sandalwood oil and carved treasures; the wonderful Bannerghatta National Park, with many wildlife attractions, including crocodiles, a serpentarium and a lion’s safari; and the Bangalore Race Course, one of the finest in India, and with the biggest field stakes in the land. For the epicure, there are superb dining opportunities, featuring sumptuous, regional cuisines in lovely settings by day or night; and Bangalore’s calendar boasts nearly two dozen annual festivals; many religious and cultural traditions are celebrated seasonally and with great exuberance. Against this lovely, historic and cultural mosaic, and propelled to the forefront of the high-tech industry by its liberal approach to global achievement and innovation, Bangalore is known worldwide as a cosmopolitan city, appealing alike to young professionals seeking opportunities, and sophisticated travellers seeking knowledge of India’s soul. Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is India’s secondlargest exporter of software, information technology (IT) and information-technologyenabled services (ITES). A major chunk of India’s car manufacturing industry is based in and around the city. Chennai Zone contributes 39% of the State’s GDP.

really is Mallorca roaring Fabia the full Monte! into the frame to build F1 circuit HOPES are mounting that Mallorca will be selected to build a new race circuit near Palma to join the multi-billion-pound Formula 1 circus. If the project comes to fruition, it will be seriously good news for this Balearic holiday island, which has been protected from the worst of the Spanish recession. Mallorca, birthplace of tennis superstar Rafael Nadal, and used by many of his international rivals as a training centre, is also hosting the 2011-2012 Global Ocean Race, which will start and finish there. And Spain boasts two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who was outwitted for a third title after taking an eight-point lead into the final race of the 2010 season. A new F1 track would put Mallorca even more firmly on the global sporting map, although Barcelona’s strong ties to the motor sport may prove to be a stumbling block. The Spanish Grand Prix is always held these days at the Catalonia circuit, just 20km outside the city. Despite the expanding F1 calendar suggesting there is no place for a second race in any one country, plans to build another Spanish venue continue unabated. Those behind the Mallorcan Formula 1 dream are already sounding out backers for this extravagant project, which would pour millions into the island’s economy. It would cost upwards of 200m euros and create 6,000 jobs. Llucmajor, close to the main Mallorcan city of Palma, has been targeted as the site for the F1 track, which would make travelling to and from it fairly easy for spectators. The organisers are hopeful
SKODA has created a special edition of the Fabia and named it Monte Carlo, after the Monte Carlo rally which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
their bid will become a reality this year, enabling the island to host a Grand Prix in September 2012. That would take the place of the European GP, being held at Valencia’s much-maligned track for the fourth and final time this year. Llucmajor Mayor Joan Jaume, who is supporting the bid, said: “The project would help not only the local community, but give the whole island a tremendous economic boost.” The 5km circuit is already being designed by Spain’s own Gabriel Palmer, with the advice of Alonso’s experienced Ferrari team. Palmer said: “The Balearic Islands are the only region in Spain where there is no such facility. We had agreed to review the existing development plan in this community, and then we found a suitable property. “It is only a short drive from Palma’s international airport, numerous hotels of all categories, and the capital itself.” Property-wise, a Mallorcan F1 event annually would almost certainly be a boon for property speculators and
21 January 2011 - 27 January 2011
developers. Ignacio Osle, sales and marketing director of Taylor Wimpey de España, who has over 50 years of property development experience there, said: “Mallorca seems be receiving a touch of the Monaco effect, attracting the rich and famous to our shores. “The local area is already noted for being fashionable for boat owners and beachlovers alike. If we are lucky
enough to start hosting annual Formula 1 races, then it will only serve to strengthen property prices as the demand to visit increases. He added: “Spain as a whole is a very fragmented market and good locations and quality property will always sell well, whatever the market conditions. International events just add to their appeal.”
It’s not particularly sporty (the most powerful petrol and diesel versions each manage just 104bhp), but the Fabia still looks the part. It boasts black body trim, roof, door-mirror covers and radiator grille top, along with smoked headlights and black, 17-inch, lightweight alloy wheels. Inside, the dominant colours are black and red and, by way of contrast, the car has silver sill plates and steel pedals. Apart from all this, the Monte Carlo is based on the SE five-door, and is priced from £12,755 (for the 68bhp 1.2-litre petrol) to £15,000 (for the 104bhp 1.6 TDI turbo diesel).
Five-speed manual transmission is standard on all versions, and the order book opens on Monday (24th Jan). There are sure to be plenty of takers among Skoda fans. The firm started out as an arms manufacturer in 1859 and did not become involved with cars until it took over the Laurin & Klement company (which began life in the bicycle business) in 1924. Skoda was well-regarded for many years but, as development became almost impossible during the Communist era, it deteriorated into a joke brand. Yet for all the sniping, and comedians making much fun of Skodas and the poor old Lada, it continued to maintain a tremendous record in international rallying. And when Volkswagen became involved in 1991 and took over full ownership in 2000, the Czech company’s reputation improved enormously and they have gone from strength to strength over the past decade.

IT’S the football match that needs no extra hype. A 90minute contest with more sub-plots than a Stephen King thriller. Local pride, careers and even a club’s survival rest on what happens in Santa Cruz on Sunday morning. Yes, Sunday morning! It’s not just matches at Hackney Marshes with 11am kick-offs on the Sabbath. Thanks to the ineptitude of the League’s organisers, the wallet of Canal Plus and the total disregard of the fans’ wishes, the biggest Canarian Derby in memory will be a morning affair. Every match involving CD Tenerife and Las Palmas is massive, but this weekend’s clash seems to have the world resting on the outcome. Both sides are in deep relegation trouble, both managers are facing the axe and both sides could see their star players depart if the match is lost. The Gran Canarians arrive in Santa Cruz seven points better off, having played a game more, but in wretched form. They won just once in 11 games after a decent start to the season. They were third after four matches and, as recently as December, were pushing for a play-off place. But it has gone spectacularly wrong since. Numancia, Cartagena and Xerez have spanked them in the last few matches. They are shipping goals and cannot score for toffee. Manager ‘Paco’ Jemez saved them from relegation last season, but they are back staring into the abyss. He was given the dreaded vote of confidence this week, and knows he will be flung over the side of the ferry if he loses on Sunday. Las Palmas have been in sharp decline for a few years.
Page 46
Tenerife chase Derby delight Their golden gamble of trying to buy promotion five years back failed, and they are still paying off the bill. Twice they have escaped bankruptcy by the skin of their teeth, and they are not far away again. This week, they sold star player Cejudo to Osasuna for chump change. The 100,000euro fee is nothing for a player who was being touted for 2.5m euros only a few months ago. On Sunday, they will have to make wholesale changes to their midfield, with Cejudo gone and veteran, holding midfielder Josico suspended. They did manage to bring in a couple of new faces this week. Hot-head Argentine centreback Matias Lequi has been signed on a free from Greek side Iraklis. He will be joined in a custard shirt by countryman Leonardo Borzani. The central midfielder held talks with Tenerife before joining
Las Palmas, after being released by Almeria. Captain David Garcia told a press conference this week that he was pleased with the signings: “They will help our cause no end,” he said. “They are both experienced and will be ready for such an important match. The Tenerife match is so big for the islands and everyone involved. “We don’t know why we are in such a bad run, and we didn’t see it coming at the start of the season. But a win in Tenerife will give us the confidence to get back up the table.” Garcia, born and raised in Gran Canaria, misses the match through injury, and he is gutted: “Of course, it’s going to be hard to watch from the stand,” he said “This match means everything. It is a shame that the Derby match sees both sides in trouble. It would be great for the Canary Islands if both
sides were still in this division next season.” This comment hasn’t gone down too well with his fans! But I can see his point. Of course Tenerife fans want Las Palmas to go down, and vice-versa, but we would miss the Derby matches. Last season, it was great to see the La Liga sides in Santa Cruz, but it has been nearly two years since a Las Palmas match - and that is just too long. These matches get the juices flowing, and Tenerife
have a decent recent record over the enemy. Tenerife captain Marc Betran recalled this week that the point had been raised in training: “It's funny, but that is something we have been talking about,” he said. “Most of the squad have been a part of a winning derby side, so we know what to expect on Sunday. “I must say, the confidence is still there in this squad. With the brilliant support we have had, and will have again on Sunday, I'm very confident we will win and start getting the points we need.” Tenerife’s point at Ponferradina last weekend was, in reality, two points dropped. Pablo Siclia’s firsthalf goal was equalised late on by the hosts after Ricardo had hit the bar. Betran accepts it was a disappointment, saying: “It’s a strange feeling because we felt bad after the game, but it is still an away point.
Mentally we are there. We have enthusiasm and desire and a will to win, which you will see on Sunday.” Tenerife will be at full strength and have a new boy in the squad. Sebastian Dubarbier was signed on loan from Lorient this week. He is a left-sided midfielder, who can play at left-back or as an attacker. The 24-year-old Argentine is looking to get his career on track after a frustrating spell in France. He has Champions League experience from his time at Cluj in Romania. At the time of writing, Tenerife were in talks to sign Real Sociedad striker Imanol Agirretxe. At 6ft 1in, he is something different and, at 23, the right age. Valladolid are also keen on his signature. A win on Sunday would do wonders for the club and the fans. The match marks the halfway point of the season and a defeat would see Tenerife as good as down. However, three points would set up this Wednesday’s make-up match with Granada perfectly. The visitors are in good shape and, arguably, the surprise side of the year after their promotion last season. Old Tenerife favourite Oscar Perez should get a warm reception and, just for old time’s sake, maybe another red card! The Granada match kicks off at 8.30pm - and like the Canary Islands Derby, it’s live and exclusive on Oasis Fm.

THE Oasis Fm Darts League prides itself on being an open competition which welcomes players from all age ranges, and of all abilities. Division 2 side Ourplace Naturals were able demonstrate this to good effect on Friday as they welcomed none other than 15-time world champion Phil Taylor into their ranks. And Phil’s natural ability helped the home team overcome Rood B 7-1. Next week, Raymond Van Barneveld plays for the Phoenix (only joking)! Naughty Nautas’ Christophe hit his first 180 of the season during an away defeat at Barracudarts Boys, while Gaffers’ Ben did the same as
they beat La Caña 7-1. Amigos Bad Girls enjoyed only their third win of the season with a 5-3 result against the Hunters, Auntie Liz striking the winning dart in the trebles. And the Nutters stay in second spot after a 6-2 success at Woodys B. Knights B and the Tavern ended all-square in San Blas Square, while the Flames came unstuck as they crashed 7-1 to Tenerife Sun. Elsewhere, Bar 180B contin-
ued a good run of form by beating the Playgirls 7-1 (maybe Mr Taylor gave them some pointers). The top of Division 1 remained the same after Nauta A and Bar 180 A both had 8-0 victories, the latter’s George securing a maximum, while the Phoenix got the better of the X-Men. On form for the Los Abrigos team were Ashley (20 and 22dart legs) and Supersub Steve with a 15-dart leg, rounded off with a 141 check-out.
Fourth-placed Tenerife Sons battered Sundowners 7-1 and Exiles travelled just down the road to get a 6-2 win at Heroes (Harry remembers it this week!). The Surfers came back from 3-0 down against Rood A, but they just faltered in the trebles to lose 5-3. Target A look content in sixth place after a comfortable 6-2 victory over Woody A. For this weeks results see www.oasisfm.com By Geoff Huxtable
Happy Hoops earn Palms point rallied from 3-1 down to edge past 8 Ball Massive 7-3. Result of the week goes to Bar 180 B, who moved up to a season-high fifth place after smashing fourth-placed Phoenix Knights 8-2. Only Harry won for the visitors on an off night for the Los Abrigos chaps. At the bottom, Bar La Cana were a little unlucky not to get something from their match with Bar 180 A, eventually going down 6-4. Legends A, on the other hand, are threatening to stay up! After an awful start to the campaign they are now flying and provided a shock for Terrace A on Tuesday. In truth, the Amarilla Golf guys are in shocking form, but full credit goes to Joe’s boys for a fine 73 success. Toscales Old Boys
and Nauta A eased their relegation worries after wins over Target Bar and Summerlands Allstars respectively, Sharks beat Men Of in the Atlantis derby, while Dreamers will be pleased with their draw at Rat Pack. Legends A are back on top of Division Two, but they were made to work hard by bottom side Connors Bar. The 6-4 win reflects the closeness of the match. They have a twopoint lead after Gaffers slipped up at home to Summerland Elite in a game that could have gone either way. Bar Tasca went third with a smart 8-2 win over Palms B, and keep an eye out for Nauta B. They are right in the promotion shake-up, and Tuesday's 6-4 win at Lupain was their seventh on the road. Inn The Pink maintained their
good run with a decent draw at home to Bar 180 C. and Phoenix Potters completed a regulation 7-3er over Tenerife Hammers C. New boys Exiles continue to shine, this week winning at Woodys. And it was honours even in the Barracuda derby match between the Hunters and the Bandits. This week it's the first round of the Knockout Cup 'sponsored by Liberty Seguros and their agent Red Tape S.L. the expat specialists' and there are some potential giantkillings. Gaffers will fancy their chances at home to Rat Pack, as will Bar Tasca against Hoops. Nauta A host their venue mates Nauta B while these is another derby in Los Cristianos. Division One Summerland Allstars host
Lupain and I've a feeling the division two side can upset the 'Villa Boys'. Draw in full: Target Bar v Dreamers Phoenix Knights v 8 Ball Massive Summerland Allstars v Lupain Inn The Pink v Barracuda Bandits La Caña v Trap Door 180 B v Summerland Elite Toscales Old Boys v Legends A Barracuda Hunters v Tenerife Hammers A Palms A v Men Of Atlantis Summerland Superstars v Phoenix Potters Nauta A v Nauta B Legends B v 180 A Terrace A v Atlantis Sharks Bar Tasca v Hoops Palms B v 180 C Gaffers v Rat Pack
