Minister's gaff! Tourists chiefs left fuming after proposed ceiling on holiday-makers THE Canary Islands Employment Minister has angered hoteliers and tourism chiefs by advocating a ceiling on the number of holidaymakers. Margarita Ramos doesn’t believe the Canaries has the right infrastructure to sustain the number of people visiting the islands. “You have to wonder if 12 million tourists is a sustainable number, with the volume of water and electricity that is needed and waste generated,” she said. “There should be a ceiling of sustainability.” She has made the headlines all over Spain and the Canaries, but for all the wrong reasons, which will surely not please the respective Cabildos. There is no doubt that tourism chiefs have stretched themselves to the limit, pushing Tenerife and the other islands as a fantastic holiday destination. They always attend various trade fairs throughout Europe, especially the major events in Madrid, London and Germany, promoting the Canaries during these bleak recession times, and the 2011 year-on-year tourism figures were up by 18%. It is of great credit to these officials that, in these despairing times, with the once-prosperous building sector on the floor, they have performed miracles to boost the economy. The tourism ambassadors have hosted their own annual conferences, and plane-loads of travel writers from all over Europe visit

Tenerife every year to view the sights and enjoy the hospitality of the finest hotels and facilities. In return, they respond with first-class reports of our holiday centres in national newspapers and magazines throughout the UK. It’s a “scratch-my-backand-I’ll-scratch-yours” scenario and, publicity-wise, it has worked wonders for our Island. So it is no surprise, then, that the Hotel Association of Santa Cruz (Ashotel), and the Federation of Hospitality and Tourism in Las Palmas (FEHT), have reacted furiously to the Ramos remarks. Ashotel President Jorge Marichal described her comments as “outrageous”, while FEHT’s Fernando Fraile went further, saying: “The

tourism sector continues to offer enormous potential for the Islands’ economy. “Last year’s figures show this. We need to make an effort to increase the number of visitors, especially during the bad months of April, May and June. I am baffled why someone feels we should have less trade.” Marichal added: “We’ll take whatever we can when it comes to tourism. We have to make it a priority for the Canary Islands to remain a major tourist destination. “There is no law which limits the number of people coming here, and I’m surprised the Minister of Employment says these things.” In fact, Ramos presides over some of the highestever unemployment figures. The Canary Islands have a

mammoth 30% jobless tally, and that figure is expected to rise sharply this year. And her comments have come at a time when the new President of South Businessmen (CEST), Miguel Galindo González, is calling for more flights from Tenerife South airport to the mainland peninsular, to improve tourism. Currently, many flights to the other Canary Islands operate from Los Rodeos airport in the north of the Island. By coincidence, within days of the minister’s remark, yet another tourism campaign was announced by Tenerife entitled “Holidays on my Island”. It involves greatly-reduced prices at three and four-star hotels during the traditionally “quiet” months of April, May

and June, and has been initiated by the Cabildo, in collaboration with Ashotel and Tenerife Tourism. Carlos Alonso, the Cabildo’s Vice-President and Minister of Tourism, said: “This is beneficial for the elderly and for the tourism sector. It is these people who can enjoy the hotels for a period of low occupancy, at affordable prices. “This will help maintain employment and generate wealth. In short, this is to generate benefits for seniors, employment and hotels.” On the general hotel occupation of tourists, Alonso added: “Hotels at the start of 2012 kept the rates similar to those of the last quarter of 2011. “This has helped continue the positive trend of the previous year, which makes

us cautiously optimistic for the future.” Manuel Butler, chief of Turespaña (Spanish Institute for Tourism), also stressed that the Ramos idea of “setting a ceiling for tourists” was not shared by the Spanish Government. “One must be very cautious with such comments,” he said, pointing out the significant weight of the tourism sector for the Canaries which, he maintained, contributed to 30% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employed 32% of the workforce. But Ramos has received backing from her Government, which insists that she is not against the growth of tourism, but considers that it should accommodate the criteria of “quality and sustainability”.

Brief encounter IT started with a handshake. Last weekend an international tourism fair took place in Germany, where the owner of Loro Parque, Wolfgang Kiessling greeted dignatories from Gran Canaria, including President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, José Miguel Bravo de Laguna. This week the Spanish press has run many stories stating that the largest water park in Europe is being built in the south of Gran Canaria, at the entrance of Playa Ingles on the GC-1. The question then comes to mind what would become of Tenerife? Why have two similar attractions

on adjoining Canary Islands. Further investigations revealed that the “sign and sealed deal” story was unfounded. A spokesperson for Loro Parque told Canarian Weekly, “Loro Parque and Siam Park report that the links that unite the parks with the island of Gran Canaria and its people have always been very close knit and fundamental since they

opened their doors nearly 40 years ago (Loro Parque) and Siam Park back in 2008. The flow of visitors received from the neighbouring island is important because of its proximity, the parks have always maintained links of progress and periodic visits. However, while the company has been considering an investment in the South of Gran Canaria for quite some time for the creation of a large water park, it is considering several locations.” Rumour has it that they have been looking at Gran Canaria for 15 years, and locations are being sought

world-wide, not just in the Canaries. They continued, “In the event that this new project could complement the touristic offer of the island with such a high quality leisure product, the same standards of excellence that characteriSe Loro Parque and Siam Park would certainly be kept. Loro Parque and Siam Park, are contributing to the development of Tenerife in the context of sustainable tourism, environmentally friendly and always prioritizing the highest quality in their facilities and job creation in every project they address. This philosophy, which has earned the company numerous awards and national and international recognition such as the Principe Felipe Award for Business Excellence and the Gold Medal and Merit Badge for Tourism from the Ministry of Tourism and Trade plus the Canary Islands Government Gold Medal, will continue in the future.” So, no agreement has been put on the table, let alone signed for Siam Park 2!

Firstly motorists have been hit at the pumps as the price of fuel rocketed. Two months ago the crude oil hit a record high and this has finally filtered through to the motorist. Unleaded is currently being sold here as high as 115c a litre, the highest ever. This blow was coupled with an extraordinary revelation by the Spanish Government. ‘ecological’ reasons and not to help reduce the countries groaning finances. There has been widespread condemnation from the business community and talk of strikes. Meanwhile the long rumoured increase in IGIC is set to be rubber stamped. The Canarian Government will increase the IGIC rate on fuel, property tax and gift tax. This will bring in around 200 million euros and will ensure they hit their promised 1.5% revenue deficit. The budget has to be signed off by March 30th and the public will feel the tax rises in the first week of April.

Adeje hosts campaign for blood donations THIS week, everyone has been talking about the sky and planets. Apparently, as spring approaches, so do our chances of viewing planets and meteor showers. ‘Astronomical spring’ arrives here in Tenerife on Tuesday 20th March at 5.14 pm (Canary Islands), and lasts 92 days and 18 hours until the end of the June 21st, beginning the summer, according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN). According to the National Geographic Institute, during the spring of 2012 the highlight will be the transit of Venus across the Sun on 6th June, an astronomical event that will not happen again until 2117. There will be two eclipses, but not possible to see from here, one of the sun on the 20th May and the other of the moon on the 4th June. There will however be a “very good” chance to see several planets. Specifically, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible at the beginning of the night during the first half of spring. First Jupiter and then Venus will be visible they then disappear from the evening

sky, which will be ruled by Mars and Saturn. The beginning of the seasons occurs in the moments when the Earth is in a certain position in its orbit around the Sun, which is set by an international agreement. In the Southern Hemisphere autumn begins. Spring can come in three different dates, according to the arrival of the seasonal equinox. It can begin between the 19th and 21st March. And don’t forget it’s next week to change the clocks! Our days lengthen by approximately 3 minutes every 24 hours. The first full moon of spring will occur on April 6th, coinciding with Good Friday. Two further full moons are expected one on the 6th May and 4th June. At the same time, in this period, Saturn will be visible at night and will be clearly visible due to the inclination of the rings. Meanwhile, on April 15th the planet will be its closest to earth. The most important meteor shower of the spring will be the Eta Acuáridads. Some of this night time activity will be visible to the naked eye, however a small pair of binoculars will be useful.

COUNCILLOR for Social Welfare, Amada Trujillo Bencomo reported that the Canarian Institute of Blood Donation and Hemotherapy, will hold a campaign in the municipality. The campaign will take place in Adeje from the 19th to the 22nd March. Trujillo has stated that “blood donation is

an important element for so many people so our involvement is crucial as at any time someone could need a transfusion.” The mobile unit will be located in two areas of the town, on Monday March 19th, opposite the Municipal School of Music from 9:15 to 13:45 and in the afternoon, from 16:15 until 20:45. From Tuesday 20th to Thursday 22nd, people wishing to donate may do so at Plaza Cesar Manrique in La Postura,

Support for businesses THE new Insular Plan for entrepreneurship will promote economic development and job creation on the Island. Tenerife Councillors of Economy and Competitiveness, Carlos Alonso and of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, Efraín Medina, released details of a document emphasising its importance as a “tool to develop new business opportunities in a crisis situation such as that we live in today.” Efrain Medina said, “the initiative seeks to give appropriate guidance to entrepreneurs of all kinds in the context of a comprehensive action aimed at achieving growth in business activity and exploiting existing opportunities that may arise in certain sectors. “Future prospects depend on all those new projects becoming a reality, and the Cabildo must accompany and support the developers not only in the process of creating and implementing new business initiatives, but in the process of consolidation and seeking funding for its realization. The plan includes six strategic lines such as:

1. Promotion of Entrepreneurship 2. Improved business skills 3. Support in the design process and implementation of business initiatives. or access to finance. 4. Support of the consolidation of new companies. or 5. Enhancement of resources for the venture 6. It also provides four themes: Innovation, Gender Mainstreaming, Social Responsibility and Sustainability and Management Environment. It is about improving the competitiveness of the production as a means to maintaining and even increasing the level of employment and the wealth generated in the area and maximizes the effectiveness and efficiency in the use of public resources used in achieving these objectives. In recent years, the council has accumulated experience in providing services for the group of entrepreneurs on the island. The document, which is in its early stage prior to final approval, has been developed with input from all the council areas and amenities that somehow work in the area of support to entrepreneurs (Agriculture and Rural Development, Youth and Women, Environment, Livestock and

Fisheries, Innovation, Tourism). At present, there are several circumstances that require a quantum leap in promoting entrepreneurial activity, contributing to the diversification of the island’s economy, exploring and making profitable new industries, promoting technology-based businesses, social responsibility and environmental sustainability of our production and implementing affirmative action measures that remove the situations of economic inequality in employment between men and women. To alleviate the major problems facing entrepreneurs today the council will launch this plan with a strategy focused on achieving the following objectives through the use of human and material resources at its disposal: Facilitating access to financing through lines of subsidies for the implementation and consolidation of business initiatives, fostering innovation, encouraging the search for partners and access to bank financing. - Increase and make visible the information provided by the government to employers about the opportunities and tools that they offer them (e.g, improve institutional websites, or promote the use of contact via email).

Tough on Karaoke judges as singers hit highest notes SO popular is the Tenerife Loves Karaoke competition that some supporters at Amarilla Golf’s Premier Bar in Amarilla Golf could not squeeze in to the packed premises. But they were just as happy to cheer on the singers from the outside terrace - and the all-round support at last Thursday’s 5th heat was just as vibrant as it had been for all the previous rounds But the event is proving really tough for the judges, who again had a difficult task finding the three heat finalists, such was the high level of performance. In fact, it was probably their most difficult decision yet, and it took ages for them to make their minds up. It meant an agonising period for the singers as they waited and waited for the verdict because of the closeness of the scoring, plus

the checking and rechecking of scores. Finally, they delivered their verdict and Chris Hodgkinson emerged triumphant from the trio’s sing-off to go through to the grand final. And Chris makes

Arona invest in Valle San Lorenzo THE municipality of Arona has invested almost 40,000 euros into the sports centre in the recreational area of El Almendro. The Mayor and Councillor for Sports in Arona, Jose Alberto González Reverón and Monica Sierra, respectively, visited the facilities on March 14th at the recreational area El Almendro, Valle San Lorenzo, where the council has begun the

necessary work for the installation of more sports equipment. They explained that the council has made an investment of nearly 40,000 euros for this function, which includes the location of a sports court built into the landscape of the area and a multipurpose gymnastic apparatus circuit. Both Gonzalez Reverón and Sierra agreed that this entire initiative has met with performance expectations for the

recreational area and makes it the “perfect setting for sports in contact with nature.” The mayor called it “symbolic for the people of Valle San Lorenzo, for here stood the first football field of the area, that this government recovered a few years ago for public use.” he added that “the installation of new equipment adds value to this area, bringing leisure and entertainment.” The Mayor recalled that

“barely eight months ago, we inaugurated the pedestrian walkways on both sides of the road linking the area of El Almendro with El Toscal, interspersing leisure and recreation in those areas where the width of the road permitted, which not only provides security for users of the recreational area, but also contributes to the aesthetics of the environment, and primarily, facilitates entering and exiting the area.”

Iberia plane abandons its flight after striking a bird AN Iberia aircraft bound for Tenerife, with 180 passengers on board, was forced to return to Madrid airport on Tuesday within 30 minutes of a bird clattering against an engine on take-off. Firefighters, ambulances and security forces were

16 March - 22 March 2012

mobilised, but all the occupants were removed safely, and passengers were later switched to another Iberia plane, which took off to Tenerife North airport less than two hours later. It followed a similar incident aboard another Tenerife-bound Iberia plane late last month, which also experienced an engine being struck by a bird. The collision caused a fire inside one of the engines

but, thankfully, the pilot was able to keep the blaze under control., although he had to circle for over an hour to burn off some of the fuel before a landing was possible. Again, there were no casualties. It is understood that the plane flew into a flock of birds moments after take-off. Bird strikes are relatively rare, but they are a major threat to flight safety.

Agriculture chief’s fears over Tenerife crop crisis THE Cabildo’s Agriculture Minister has warned of a massive crop crisis this summer. Jose Joaquin Bethencourt has voiced his concern after one of the driest winters on record, saying “The situation is very worrying and there will be significant crop losses. “It’s my understanding that potato and cereal crops will be most affected by the drought. If there is no significant rain in the next two weeks, we are looking at

a major agricultural problem.” Bethencourt may need to do a rain dance because no rainfall is predicted for the next week. Potatoes need a moist environment to grow, and the usual wet season between November and February provides enough underground moisture to last the year. But that hasn’t happened this season, and it is vital for the potato fields to be watered soon to ensure the ongoing crop cycle. Domingo Rios, the Cabildo’s director of Biodiversity

and Conservation, is also a worried man. “Although this year’s winter crop have not yet sprouted and have deeper roots, the crop may be affected by the lack of rain,” he said. “It is a major concern.” The situation is especially bad in El Rosario and Los Rodeos, where the water shortage is already affecting crops. Any potato shortage will lead to a price hike in supermarkets and restaurants, which will amount to another blow to consumers during this deep recession.

Horrifying death of a possible drug-runner A CHARRED, dismembered body found in a barranco in the Añaza district of a Santa Cruz ravine on Sunday was said by police to be identical to two others discovered in different areas of Arona in 2005 and 2011.

In the latter cases, both people had been drugs “mules”, and police were this week looking for evidence of a drugs’ pack being transported in the stomach of Sunday’s victim, who was discovered by a local man out walking.

National Police spokesman Piedad Lozar said the unknown man was middleaged, and they believe one of the capsules carrying narcotics inside his body may have caused an overdose - before his horrific murder.

Pilots end Iberia strike in search of a solution

IBERIA pilots have cancelled disrupting strikes planned for later this month and into April and May after an interim agreement with management. It was reached on Monday during a meeting attended by representatives from the Employment and Social Security Ministries. An Iberia spokeswoman said: “The pilots have accepted the proposal

Page 8

to have a mediator,” but pilots’ union Sepla did not comment.. The rebellious pilots had announced a series of 24 oneday strikes in protest at the launch of the company’s lowcost airline, Iberia Express, which, they believe, will costs thousands of jobs. Iberia Express is set to be launched on 25th March and will cover routes in Spain and Europe. The pilots have already staged 12 one-day strikes since the launch was announced late last year, and they were joined in

February by protesting cabin crew. So far, Iberia has had to cancel some 1,400 flights at a cost of 36 million euros because of the stoppages. But on Tuesday, José Manuel Soria, the Spanish Government’s Industry, Energy and Tourism Minister, said the latest move was “very positive”. He added: “I am happy that the employees have taken this decision, and I hope that sooner or later, they reach an agreement through arbitration.”

despite the grieving public’s purchases of Jackson songs, it held off Man In The Mirror. Horler and band-mates Manian and Yann Peifer will also be filming in Fuerteventura for what is a

make-or-break song for the band. Cascada have suffered disappointing sales recently and they will be hoping for big things from Summer Of Love, to be released next month.

There will be nine performances of the production Alegria, and the shows will take place from 13-20th January in the Pavilion Insular Santiago Martín, in Santa Cruz. The Alegria production, which has been touring the world since 1994, features a cast of 55 artists and musicians, who come from 17 countries. It’s a high-energy, acrobaticperformance show featuring synchronised trapeze acrobatics, high-rise flying and many more circus-based theatrics.

Christopher de la Rosa, Tenerife Cabildo’s Culture and Heritage Minister, welcomed the news, saying: “Negotiations have been long and I am pleased it’s happening. “The arrival of Cirque du Soleil coincides with the commemoration of the centenary of the council, and it shows what this Island can achieve.” The Tenerife dates bring to an end what has been a mammoth tour. The show started its latest tour in Granada on the mainland before moving to Bilbao. It visits the UK next month, stopping off at Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham, before visiting 11 more venues prior to the Tenerife dates.

Local News TOP tourist attraction Loro Parque has celebrated a special event with the 40th birthday of one of its gorillas. Schorsch is the oldest male in the group of single gorillas from the west and, as well as highlighting the quality of the park’s animal welfare and management, it is also registers a landmark. As well as living among a critically-endangered species, the age attained by Schorsch is rare because only 2% of captive males live to the ripe old age of 40. The lowland gorilla populations in the wild are in decline because of poaching and diseases such as the Ebola virus, which has killed up to 90% of the species in some areas. To celebrate this happy event, the keepers and vets Loro Parque prepared a special activity in which, apart from receiving a cake made with his favourite fruits, a basket of vegetables presented in a different way was made to stimulate his curiosity. Schorsch has patient, noble behaviour, which never ceases to amaze his carers, who have dedicated themselves to looking after him. Lowland gorillas live in tropical forests, where they are grouped in families with a dominant male, a group

Birthday greetings to a 40-year-old gorilla of several females and their offspring. When the young grow up, they often leave family groups and meet temporarily with singles groups, until they form a new clan, or take over an existing one. Loro Parque was a pioneer among worldwide zoos and managed to recreate the social structure in the park with a group of singles. It solved a major problem faced by zoos in the mid-90s because of a surplus of males. The worsening state of conservation of this species has made the captive breeding efforts much more important now. Fortunately the population, managed by European zoos (EEP), has a number of examples - 420 in 2008 - of which 75% were born in captivity. The singles group in Loro Parque are key players in Europe’s captive-breeding programme, which allows greater genetic exchange and helps manage family groups in other zoos.

World News PREPARATIONS are being made in Belgium to bring home the bodies of 28 people, including 22 children, killed in a coach crash in Switzerland. It is understood some of the victims’ relatives have arrived at the morgue to help formally identify the bodies. The Dutch newspaper HBVL said the identity of three children is still unknown. Two Belgian military C-130 transport aircraft are on hand as the repatriation of the bodies is due to start tonight. The bus driver’s body will remain in Switzerland while an autopsy is carried out to check if he was suffering from an illness that could have caused the accident. The 24 people injured in the crash have all been identified and they are being treated at four different Swiss hospitals. The tragedy happened as the group returned from a ski trip. A doctor treating some of the young survivors of the crash has told Sky News they have been asking about the fate of their school friends. Dr Michael Canans, who works at the hospital in Sion where 14 children were admitted on Tuesday night, said most of them have

Page 12

Tragic Swiss coach-crash victims on the way home fractures of the lower limbs. But he admitted that the psychological damage could be severe. “Of course, this is very important and we have a team of psychologists who are also here and in the other hospitals, and with the parents,” he said. “Slowly, they understand that a lot of their friends did not survive so it’s a very traumatic event, of course. “They talk, and they ask, but

at the moment we are not 100% sure who survived and who did not.” Investigators are still trying to explain why the modern, well-equipped coach suddenly veered to the right as it drove through the 2.5kmlong tunnel, and smashed into an emergency layby. But they have ruled out several possible causes. According to the Swiss prosecutor, the coach was

not exceeding the 100km per hour speed limit. Authorities also said early indications suggest the 52 passengers on board the vehicle were wearing seatbelts. Twenty-eight people, including the two drivers of the coach, died in the accident. Parties from two schools in northeast Belgium had been on their way home from a skiing trip in Val d’Anniviers.

Those killed include 21 Belgians and seven Dutch nationals. The bus was travelling on the A9 towards Sion, in the Valais region, when it suddenly swerved to the right, struck a kerb and hit the motorway tunnel. The impact of the smash was so severe that many passengers were trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by emergency workers.

An investigation to determine the cause of the crash is under way. No other vehicles were said to be involved in the incident. Swiss prosecutors are looking into whether a technical problem, human error or medical condition with the driver was to blame. Belgian transport minister Melchior Wathelet said the company that ran the coach, Toptours, based in Aarschot, central Belgium, had a good safety record. Investigators are also studying CCTV images from cameras fitted in the motorway tunnel, Mr Elsig added. The crash has been described as one of the worst traffic accidents in Swiss history. Most of the children were aged around 12, and the bus was one of three hired by a Christian group that organised the trip. Belgium’s Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, who has also travelled to Switzerland, said it was “an extremely sad day for all of Belgium”.

'Hunger Water cannons to The Games' set combat riot mobs? to be big hit WATER cannon and CS gas could be made available to police forces in an attempt to avoid a repeat of last summer’s riots. The equipment would be valuable to forces across England and Wales, a new review said. Scotland Yard chiefs said the crowd dispersal weapon “would have been considered as a tactical option” had it been more readily available in the capital as violence erupted in August. Under current arrangements, forces must provide 24 hours’ notice before getting water cannon sent over from Northern Ireland. Top officers are also considering whether Taser stun guns would have better equipped officers to deal with violent disturbances see last year. Several water cannons worth around £1m each - could be purchased on a shared basis for forces,

the Metropolitan Police’s strategic review into the disorder of August 2011 said. Despite deaths linked to water cannon usage in Northern Ireland, the report says: “Water cannons are widely recognised as an effective tactic to disperse and distance aggressors. “It requires a precise environment and works most effectively against large static crowds that are, for example, throwing missiles at police,

16 March - 22 March 2012

or other communities. It does have tactical limitations, such as manoeuvrability in an urban environment. “It is the opinion of this review that had it been available for use, it would have been considered as a tactical option during this disorder.” The report added that “it is unlikely to have been an appropriate and practical option owing to the speed and agility of the disorder”.

It added: “The events of August and subsequent interest in this option have opened the public debate as to whether it is appropriate to have this option more readily available on the UK mainland. “The MPS looks forward to the Home Office resolving its position on licensing and the funding of water cannon as a national asset.” The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) is expected to be in a position to issue guidelines to forces in May, the report said. Chief Constable Ian Learmonth, of Acpo, said:“The key for deployment of any tactic is that it must always be justified and proportionate to the situation. Scotland Yard assistant commissioner Mark Rowley said the force was “determined” to improve its capabilities after last summer’s “unprecedented” scenes. “Within the pages of this report are a number of areas the Met can do better,” he said.

THE Hunger Games movie has been billed as the new Twilight and is set to be one of the biggest box office hits of the year. The £65m film, which has premiered in London, is based on a best-selling trilogy of books written by Suzanne Collins. The story is based around a world divided into 12 districts set in the future, each of which has to send a girl and boy to what they call The Hunger Games where the ‘tributes’ fight to the death with only one surviving each year. The rest of the population watches on screens cheering them on in a macabre Big Brother-style show. Aimed at the lucrative teenage market, the violence in the books has been criticised and toned down in the movie to receive the teen-friendly 12A classification in the UK and 13 in America. One of the producers of the film, Nina Jacobson, told Sky News careful consideration was given to the levels of violence permitted.

She said: “What we tried to do was to be honest about the violence - it is a very intense premise. We wanted to be true to it, but never to be gratuitous, to never glorify it or soft pedal it.” The author was inspired by an ancient Greek myth but equally by her experience of watching reality TV and war coverage, and wondering what the mix of entertainment and true-life terror would mean for the future. The result is a world which has gripped readers and is expected to overtake the first Twilight instalment with one of the biggest debuts of all time. It stars the Oscar nominated Jennifer Lawrence who was speaking at the European premiere at the O2 in London. She said: “It’s an incredible story with wonderful characters but it’s also deep and it’s got lots of metaphors which ring true in a lot of ways.” Josh Hutcherson, her co-star, added he was a massive fan of the trilogy.

Girl dies after Second NY Madam case being struck woman pleads not guilty by rugby ball TRIBUTES have been paid to a “promising, delightful and kind” girl who died after being struck by a rugby ball during a school PE lesson in Basildon, Essex. Leonie Nice, 12, was catching the ball during a lesson at Woodlands Comprehensive School in Takely End when she was hit in the chest and fell over, the head teacher has said. Andy White added: “Leonie keeled over and appeared to go into a fit.” It happened just before midday on Tuesday. Leonie was taken to Basildon Hospital by ambulance but died soon afterwards. Gary Sanderson, spokesman for the ambulance service, said: “First and foremost our thoughts are firmly with the girl’s family at this tragic time. “The ambulance crew arrived at the scene within one minute and found the girl in a critical condition.

Following rapid treatment and stabilisation, she was taken to an awaiting medical team at Basildon Hospital where sadly she died shortly after.” Paying tribute to the Year 7 pupil, Mr White said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time. “Leonie was a promising, delightful and kind girl who will be greatly missed by all the staff and pupils of Woodlands School. “The pupils and parents have been informed of this sad event and students who require support are being looked after by our own staff and specialist staff from Essex County Council’s support team.” Tributes have also been left on micro-blogging website Twitter.

A SECOND woman accused of supplying prostitutes to Manhattan’s rich and powerful has turned herself in to authorities in a case that has made international headlines.

Jaynie Mae Baker pleaded not guilty to the sole charge that she and Scottish-born alleged madam Anna Gristina are facing: promoting prostitution. She faced dozens of reporters and photographers outside court after she was set free on $100,000 (£64,000) bail. Baker, 30, had been missing since Gristina was arrested last month. Her defence lawyer said she had been on holiday in Mexico. Robert Gottlieb said friends had told his client that reporters were camped outside her flat last week. She called Mr Gottlieb, and he told prosecutors she would surrender.

Prosecutors claim Gristina, a 44-year-old suburban mother, was in fact a highend madam who provided prostitutes to power brokers in New York for years. During a five-year investigation, she was accused of having claimed that she had contacts within law enforcement. She has also pleaded not guilty, with her lawyers saying

she was simply starting a high-end, legal dating service. Prosecutors said Gristina is a flight risk and may have money stashed away to make her escape. She has not been able to post her $2m (£1.3m) bail and remains in New York’s Rikers Island prison. Mr Gottlieb would not comment on whether Baker

knew Gristina but said there was “never any question” his client would return to the US to face the charges. Baker was listed until recently as a recruiter for high-end matchmaking service VIP Life. However, the service’s founder Lisa Clampitt said Baker was a freelancer who never ended up referring a client or getting paid during the six months she was associated with the service. Mr Gottlieb said “there is nothing sordid, nothing illegal” in Baker’s work. He said her life outside work includes an extensive list of charitable projects, from working in New York soup kitchens to going to India to help get clothing to the poor. But prosecutors insist the reality is quite different. “We have had numerous informants over the years who have, at times, discussed Ms Baker’s role in the (prostitution) operation,” Manhattan assistant district attorney Charles Linehan said in court on Tuesday. If convicted, Gristina and Baker could both face up to seven years in prison.

UK's Prime Minister is at home in the US Eastwood’s family star in reality show CLINT EASTWOOD’S family are joining the likes of the Osbournes and the Kardashians in the world of reality TV royalty. feature as a guest once in a while. Over the course of the 10 episodes, the family will travel from their home in Carmel, California, to Los Angeles. To spice thing up there are promises of a few arguments between 15-year-old Morgan and her mother and an inside look at the relationship of Francesca, 18, and her 29-year-old boyfriend. “Nothing is more important to me than family - no matter how you define that,” Dina Eastwood said. “I’m really proud of my family,” her husband said about the project. “They are a constant source of inspiration and entertainment.”

BARACK and Michelle Obama have hosted a sumptuous state dinner for David and Samantha Cameron with seats at the tables for more than 350 celebrities, billionaires and politicians. Held in a marquee on the White House’s south lawn, the dinner was organised for the Prime Minister and his wife, who are on a three-day visit to the US. Although the trip is an “official visit” rather than a “state visit” because Mr Cameron is not head of state, the Obamas chose to call last night’s event a “state dinner”, with all the ceremony and pomp. Mr Obama gave Mr and Mrs Cameron a sartorial thumbsup as they arrived at 7pm, declaring: “They look better than us.” During his dinner toast, Mr Obama paid tribute to the

Prime Minister, saying: “I’ve seen his character, I’ve seen his commitment to human dignity in Libya. “I’ve seen his resolve, his determination to get the job done.” In an apparent reference to the couple’s care for their disabled son Ivan, who died in 2009 aged six, the president said:“I will say something else, David - all of us have seen how you as a parent along with Samantha have shown a measure of strength that few of us will ever know. “Tonight, I thank you for bringing that same strength

and solidarity to our partnership.” Mr Cameron responded by saying he felt the special relationship “in his bones”. He praised Mr Obama’s “strength, moral authority and wisdom”, citing his decision to order the mission which led to the death of former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. “Let us all agree, the world is better off without Bin Laden but the world is better off without (former Libyan leader Muammar) Gaddafi too,” said Mr Cameron. He said Mr Obama had

“pressed the reset button” on moral authority in the world. Mr Cameron also complimented both wives while joking about his Tuesday night out with Mr Obama at a college basketball game in Ohio. “We have to have a guys’ night out because so often we find we are completely overshadowed by our beautiful wives,” the prime minister said. Among famous names from both sides of the Atlantic who scored golden tickets to the event were actor George Clooney, Virgin boss Richard Branson, billionaire Warren Buffett, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis, new world number one golfer Rory McIlroy and Downton Abbey stars Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern. The White House also made sure to save a seat at the tables for more than 30 of Mr Obama’s top fundraisers, who each have helped raise at least $50,000 for the president’s re-election effort.

A beauty who was dumped callously by a dreadful beast WHO on earth could possibly have dumped this beautiful 10-year-old cockier spaniel?

Early Birds bowling in with a grand gesture ALAN HOOD, former Early Birds Bowling Club captain, presented Liz Montague with 1,000 euros for her Helping Hands in Tenerife Charity last Friday. The ceremony took place at Westhaven Bay, Costa del Silencio, and the money will provide assistance to the Guardyl Children’s Home in Granadilla on behalf of the Early Birds.

Alan thanked Liz for the touching story she told about the home, and for the time and care taken in providing their urgent needs. He also thanked the Early Bird members for supporting the charity. Tom O’Rourke, the present Early Birds Captain, has confirmed that the charity fund will continue this year and hopes it will carry on for years to come, which will enable the club to support many charities along the way.

She was picked up last week, her coat matted and riddled with fleas, by the Protection Civil on the streets of Arona,. Happily, she is now on the road to recovery at Accion del Sol and is seeking a new loving home, in which she can enjoy her twilight years, free of pain and suffering. The staff at the Granadillabased dog sanctuary work hard every day to care for their many refuge dogs, and their duties include feeding and collecting the dog mess, which is taken to the legal PIRS site for disposal. They are also responsible for cleaning the kennels with specialist wash/vac machines to ensure a clean and sterile environment for the dogs to live in, and they “socialise” the many dogs so they can live together in small groups. In addition, they show visitors around, wash and groom the dogs, assist the vets and much, much more. All these jobs are really important because, if animal welfare is not carried in the correct manner, and with compassion, then the dogs will suffer and will start ailing in a short time, especially with the high temperatures over here and the infections which are carried over by the calimas. Imagine, too, the task of giving all the dogs their monthly treatment for flea and heartworm, which is vital for their welfare. The water used at the refuge for cleaning is recycled to feed the many plants growing

there, and all the products used for cleaning are environmentally-friendly. If you would like to adopt a dog from the refuge, then pop along or learn more details by calling 922 778 630.

The centre is open MondayFriday from 3-6pm and is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1 and right next to ITER, the ecological windmill park. Should adoption be too big

a commitment, but you would still like to help Accion del Sol, then why not walk the dogs on the nearby beach and surrounding countryside? They always welcome a bit of TLC and an adventure.

Tenerife Sur Lions Jill romps home up their standard at the double! TENERIFE Sur Lions are raising the quality of the way merchandise in their Charity shops is being presented.

present and enhance their ethos: “We Serve”. The shops rely entirely on donations to continue their work in supporting and helping people in the local community and further afield. Locally, Tenerife Sur Lions

The Lions, already referred to as the “Little Harrods” of charity shops by many their customers, are seeking to improve their current standing. They are acutely aware of the generosity of those who donate to them and, equally, they are also aware of the need to reflect that generosity in the way those donations are presented in their shops. To do this, they have a team of dedicated volunteers, who prepare the goods for sale in the shops. Clothing, for example, is sorted into men’s, women’s or children’s wear, re-laundered when needed, and then steamed or ironed if required before being individually priced, sized and hung on dress rails to display them at their best. At the Cristianos shop, books are now sorted into alphabetical order by author and displayed on shelves in an area aptly named The Book Shop. Other areas are being reviewed for improvements in order to continue to raise the standard the Lions

have provided assistance to orphanages, provided holidays for disadvantaged and physically-challenged children, and supported health awareness and community projects. They have, through the Lions International Organisation, also participated in the “Recycle for Sight” project, as well as supported many others. Giving to the shops could not be easier: simply take whatever items you no longer need, or want, to either of the two shops, where someone will be happy to receive them and thank you personally. The Costa del Silencio shop is open daily from 11am to

2pm, except at weekends, and is situated below the Las Gaviotas building (across the road from Coral Mar Square) at the end of the car park. The Los Cristianos shop is open daily from 11am to 3pm, except Sundays, and is on the 1st floor (bus station end) of the Apolo Centre, with a convenient lift directly behind the stairway that opens by the shop. The BBC will show half the races live, along with practice and qualifying, but will only carry highlights for the others. “In 2012 I will be working with Sky Sports F1 television,” Brundle said. “The fact that their newly announced and dedicated F1 channel will have no in-race advertising was a key factor, but most importantly I need to commentate on every race live. Recorded and delayed sports television doesn’t give me the adrenalin fix I crave.” David Croft leaves BBC Radio 5 Live to join Martin Brundle in the commentary box for each race weekend. Steve Leonard presents the series in which British veterinary students learn about being a wildlife vet in South Africa. The students are helping head vet Dr Will Fowlds move four buffalo from a holding facility. Two are moved successfully and then Sam from Cambridge University takes over as team leader. Sam is already a qualified vet so Will and Steve want to see how he shapes up. One of the buffalo is dealt with smoothly but the other is in danger of choking - and Steve notes that he had expected Sam to take more control of the situation. The following morning Will brings the students to a local community where they will be running a free health clinic. A dog is brought in with severe mouth abscesses and needs an operation - Sam's first ever. But it goes well and the animal makes a full recovery. Back at the lodge Will has planned a surprise quiz and Sam is awarded the prize looking after a three-monthold orphaned serval kitten for the night.

A brand new version of the world-famous and widely acclaimed Fort Boyard adventure game show with an original format - this time around all the contestants are teenagers. Set in the familiar Napoleonic sea fortress off the south-west coast of France, kids from the US and UK will compete in a series of thrilling quests to uncover Fort Boyard's hidden treasures. Dancing on Ice finalist Laura Hamilton and American actor Geno Segers are the hosts.

The Comics. Stephen Fry narrates a series tracing the roots of light entertainment, from variety to Strictly Come Dancing and all points in between. Comedy is currently at the very heart of light entertainment, but back in the early days of music hall, the comic was the lowest of the low in the showbiz world. This episode charts the comedian's meteoric rise to the top, examining the careers and lives of comedy legends past and present. From the music hall antics of Edwardian surrealist comic Little Titch to the modernday surrealism of Little Britain, it presents an insight into the lives and minds of the finest UK comedians. It traces the influence of the northern working men's clubs, examines the alternative comedy movement which fought against sexism and racism.

River Cottage Veg Channel 4, 19:30 Renowned carnivore and enthusiastic exponent of the hog roast Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall loves animals - both alive and on his plate. Now Hugh has challenged himself to spend the summer as a vegetarian, to see just what simple pleasures are being overlooked. In this first episode Hugh heads into the River Cottage vegetable garden to see what green summer vegetables he can get his hands on to set him on his way. Next he pays a visit to David Bailey, one of the best vegetarian chefs in the country. David wows Hugh with his Asianinspired cooking. On his return to River Cottage Hugh's first challenge is to put on a full summer BBQ without so much as a sausage. Time for some delicious halloumi, tomato and potato kebabs, and a vibrant carrot, cashew and orange salad. A forage in the wild larder proves even more fruitful, with tasty samphire for chard and samphire tarts, and seaweed for dulce rosti.

Lord of the Flies BBC2, 23:00 Compelling film adaptation of William Golding's disturbing tale of a group of schoolboys stranded on a remote island following a plane crash. Their attempts to form a community end in disaster as they gradually revert to primitive savagery in the struggle to survive.

Charity appeal. BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner was shot six times at close range while on assignment in Saudi Arabia in 2004. His spinal cord was severed, and he was left dependent on a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He makes an appeal on behalf of Back Up, a charity which understands that a spinal cord injury can be devastating, but does not believe it should prevent anyone from getting the most out of life. The film features Matt, who was paralysed from the neck down in a rugby accident eight years ago. Back Up supported him as he adapted to his new life and he is now training to be a solicitor.

Match of the Day 2 BBC2, 22:00 Colin Murray presents highlights of today's two Premier League matches which see relegation threatened Wolves host title chasing Manchester United and high-flying Newcastle take on Norwich. United were comprehensive 4-1 winners when Wolves visited Old Trafford in December - but the Molineux faithful will remember last season's fixture when the men in gold inflicted a first league defeat of the season on Sir Alex Ferguson's side, a result which lifted Wolves off the bottom of the table, and proved vital in their narrow escape from relegation.

Homeland Channel 4, 21:00 Afzal Hamid, the lone surviving terrorist from the compound in Afghanistan from where Brody was rescued, has been captured. Estes wants Saul and Carrie to find out everything he knows about Abu Nazir's plans to attack the US, but there's a catch: Estes wants Brody to help with the interrogation, noting that he's in a unique position due to his previous history with Hamid. At the interrogation Brody is completely taken aback when he sees Hamid on the closed-circuit TV. Carrie explains that they hope Brody can provide information to unsettle him during the interrogation. Brody does his part, and it works perfectly; Hamid is ready to crack. In exchange Brody wants a face-to-face with Hamid to show him that the tables have turned; that he didn't break him. He takes his request to Estes, pleading that he needs closure.

W C CHOICE The Little Paris Kitchen: Cooking with Rachel Khoo BBC2, 20:30

Croydon-born cook and food writer Rachel Khoo demonstrates her imaginative flair for the cuisine of Paris. From her tiny Parisian kitchen, Rachel proves that simple cooking can produce sensational results. Over six episodes, Rachel demonstrates her contemporary approach to classic French dishes, from light snacks to familiar favourites. But she also explores the less familiar food landscape of this cosmopolitan capital, taking us to the city's most inspirational food markets and restaurants and revealing fresh and vibrant influences such as North African and Vietnamese. It provides for a fresh, surprising and mouthwatering insight into the food and the city itself. In this enchanting opening programme, Rachel cooks up her unique take on a croque madame, conjures up some wonderful madeleine cakes, shops in the Moroccan part of the capital's oldest food market and explores the city's rooftops to find honey created by Parisian bees.

Return to the Falklands ITV1, 9pm In this new one-off 60-minute documentary marking 30 years since the Falklands War, three men return to embark on journeys of discovery about themselves, the islands and the Argentinean soldiers they faced. Through their stories, Return To The Falklands explores the human side of war and the captivating beauty of the Falkland Islands. And how the men who fought and reported there have changed – like the islands - in the last three decades. For veteran Simon Weston it is an opportunity to see parts of the Falklands he has never visited before and experience some of the stunning wildlife on the beautiful Sea Lion Island. It is also a moment to reflect on the severe injuries he suffered and the friends he lost when his ship was torpedoed in 1982. For war correspondent Mike Nicholson it is a chance to learn more about how the islands themselves have changed, developed and reinvented themselves as well as revisiting key battlegrounds. Iconic archive footage from Mike’s reports on ITV News during the war is used to bring to life the intense battle which took place across the islands. For ex-Marine Nick Taylor, there is a unique and personal motivation for his return. In 1982, he found a camera left behind by an Argentinean soldier, took the film home and always wondered who the man in the photos was. Thirty years later, Nick found that officer working as a lawyer in Buenos Aires. The two men meet again at the top of the Mount of Two Sisters near Port Stanley – where last they were fighting against each other – for a moment of genuine reconciliation. Marcello Lambias, the ex-Argentinean officer whose photos Nick has, is also in the Falklands ahead of their meeting – and feels very differently to Nick about the sovereignty of the islands.

ITV1, 8pm The return of a convicted murderer to Midsomer triggers a spate of gruesome killings and a mysterious case for Barnaby and Jones in a new episode of Britain’s best-loved detective drama, MIDSOMER MURDERS. ‘Murder of Innocence’ stars Neil Dudgeon as DCI John Barnaby and Jason Hughes as DS Ben Jones in a brand new two-hour drama for ITV1 from Bentley Productions. When convicted killer Grady Felton (Jack Pierce) comes back to his childhood home after 18 years, it stirs up anger and raw emotion for the family of his victim, Daniel Denning. A barrister involved in the trial is murdered that same night and fingers naturally point at Grady. But Grady has a solid alibi so the detectives suspect he could be working with an accomplice. But then Grady himself is critically injured in an arson attack. Does someone in the picturesque country estate of Binwell have old scores to settle? Meanwhile, Barnaby must face some personal demons of his own as he tries to train for the Chief Constable’s fitness test.

Having to hand-print hundreds of products by midnight piles on the pressure, resulting in messedup merchandise, and figuring out the financials is almost forgotten.

But what for him is a pleasurable pastime and part of a lucrative career ruined his father, a gambling addict who committed fraud to get money for betting and went to prison for his crimes. Alexis is interested in exploring the tipping point that turns the odd flutter into something darker and more dangerous. Why can most people place one bet and then walk away when some are compelled to lose their shirt, their house and their families on a losing streak?

Wikileaks: The Secret Life of a Superpower BBC2, 21:00 Richard Bilton uncovers a struggle at the heart of US diplomacy between the ideals of freedom and spreading democracy, and the ruthless demands of American security and narrow self-interest. He examines what the Wikileaks cables reveal about America's conflicted dealings with Egypt's deposed dictator Hosni Mubarak, and shows how US diplomats in Cairo missed warning signs that revolution in Egypt was coming. And he details the moral tension in US diplomacy brought about by America's controversial War on Terror. Using the cables, Richard uncovers the moral compromises made by America's diplomats over the repatriation of Guantanamo Bay prisoners, and he shows the secret US efforts to block investigations into alleged CIA rendition and abuse.

A look at the work of high court enforcement officers, also known as sheriffs, as they strive to retrieve cash for members of the public that are owed money. A builder asked an 86-year pensioner to fork out 4,000 pounds for some work on her roof. And he left it in a worse state than when he started. The sheriffs pay the builder an early morning visit to try to get her money back - but things get rather heated. The sheriffs try to track down a landlord who did not pay his student tenants their deposits when they left. But he proves hard to find. And an office manager was unfairly dismissed.

John Bishop’s Sport Relief Hell BBC 1, 9pm A one-off special that captures the most physically gruelling test of John Bishop’s life as he cycles, rows and runs 290 miles from Paris to London in five days for Sport Relief 2012. Starting his arduous journey at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the programme sees John attempt a punishing 185-mile cycle to Calais in less than 24 hours. The documentary follows John, who has only slept for an hour, as he joins up with his team of celebrity rowers, Davina McCall, Denise Lewis and Freddie Flintoff. The team navigate the choppy waters of the Channel as they head for the white cliffs of Dover and the safety of dry land. But as a sleep-deprived John battles with exhaustion it falls to his famous friends to boost his spirits. The show then tracks the next three days of John’s gruelling journey step-by-step, as he runs a crippling 90 miles from Dover to London, taking on just over a marathon a day. Celebrity mates Dermot O’Leary, Frank Skinner, Greg James and Robbie Savage provide much needed support as they run alongside him for parts of the route. On the final day, John summons up his last ounces of strength to reach the finish line in Trafalgar Square. The programme also tracks John as he travels to Sierra Leone with Comic Relief to see how the money raised is able to help extremely vulnerable, poor and disadvantaged people across the world’s poorest countries. Every year, almost two million children in Africa die from diseases that can be prevented by simple vaccines. John visits a hospital in the Capital and sees how essential a £5 vaccine can be.

W C CHOICE Britain's First Photo Album BBC2, 18:30

The Victorian photographer Francis Frith spent the best part of his life documenting Britain. His aim was to photograph every city, every town and every village in the land. He and his team took tens of thousands of pictures and left us with an invaluable record of a Britain frozen in time. Now, John Sergeant is attempting to follow in Frith and his team's footsteps, finding out what has changed, what has stayed the same and what has gone forever, and he unravels some of the mysteries of this unique archive. This time, John's journey continues along the North East Coast, where he searches for a missing rock formation in Hartlepool, visits the Victorian seaside resort of Saltburn-by-the Sea and meets a family in Whitby whose ancestors were captured on camera over 120 years ago. To complete his travels John also takes four photographs to capture the modern setting of the Frith pictures.

Keep your footing, even on slippery, wet surfaces WE have all witnessed or experienced dangerous situations with wet tiles or swimming pool surrounds. Even getting in or out the bath can catch us out sometimes when we’re not concentrating. Highly-polished floors look magnificent in apartments or at the local supermarket, but they can be dangerous, which is why we see that familiar ‘danger cone’ in public buildings. Slippery when wet! In these over-cautious times, companies are well aware of claims departments suing for injury or accident. So, if you are a hotel director, part of a holiday complex management or individuals concerned about their safety, and that of their guests at home, then read on. Safe Grip Tenerife is being operated by established building company CCS, which

has discovered the perfect, long-lasting product to avoid slippery flooring, baths, shower trays and swimming pool areas. Safe Grip can be applied easily and will make these

areas much safer by reducing accidents occurring through those slippery conditions you find by swimming pools without changing the attractive look of the pool. And it will be far less

expensive than having a whole area refloored with anti-slip tiles, which are expensive. What price would you put on the safety of loved ones? The treatment doesn’t wear

off, it does not need time to cure and can be applied during operational hours, even in areas with high pedestrian traffic, such as retail stores. It is suitable for stone surfaces, including marble, terrazzo, ceramic, quarry tile, granite, slate, concrete and porcelain. And it is also perfect for enamel baths and shower trays. The clear solution will not noticeably alter the colour of the surface, and it lasts for up to five years depending on the amount of foot traffic. This remarkable surface treatment, microscopically, changes the tread pattern of the floor tile surface to provide dramaticallyincreased grip for bare feet and shoes. For a free demonstration by fully-trained and licensed applicators, contact Paul on 600 841 507 or 922 764 348. More details are available via the company website www. ccstenerife.com

End of an era for encyclopedia THE Encyclopedia Britannica is to cease publication after 244 years of continuous print, and move online as the dominance of digital media intensifies.

Since its launch in Edinburgh in 1768, a new version of the Britannica was available every two years, with the latest 32-volume collection costing £1,195. Although the Britannica retains British spelling, it has been operating from the US since 1929.

It was one of the first publications to move into the electronic age, introducing a digital version in 1981 for the Lexis-Nexis academic service and an online edition 13 years later. The publisher also has several smartphone and tablet apps. “The print edition became more difficult to maintain and wasn’t the best physical element to deliver the quality of our database and the quality of our editorial,” the company’s global president,

Jorge Cauz, said. However, he denied that Encyclopaedia Britannica with its scholarly, reliable reputation and a concise free online edition had been affected by Wikipedia. “Britannica was one of the first companies to really feel the full impact of technology, maybe 20 years ago, and we have been adapting to it, though it is very difficult at times,” Mr Cauz said. The company will sell print editions until the current stock of around 4,000 sets

runs out. Commenting on the future of the industry, Mr Cauz said many trade publishers would not survive and content development companies would need to think about how to fill the gap. “Print may not completely vanish from the market but I think it is going to be increasingly less important,” he said. “Many publications will never have a print analogue and will only be printed on digital formats.”

Free Olympic Wi-Fi PEOPLE using the Tube in London will be able to use the internet at stations across the capital for the first time from this summer. The Mayor of London has announced that free WiFi will be available to Tube passengers on platforms during the London Olympics. A contract has been awarded to Virgin Media to provide the wif-fi access at no cost to the fare or taxpayer. It will be introduced at

Page 38

over 80 stations ahead of the summer, while up to 120 stops will be connected by the end of the year. The equivalent of a 4G network service across all areas is expected to be available - even during busy times. London Mayor Boris Johnson, said: “It’s vital that we harness the massive opportunities stemming from the digital revolution, by creating a vibrant, worldclass industry to attract investment and create jobs for Londoners. “Millions of passengers will

now be able to connect to their work, friends or access the latest news and travel information whilst on the move. “This is a fabulous new and free resource which will be in place from this summer when London is being showcased on a global stage and playing host to millions.” Virgin Media phone and broadband customers will be able to use the service bundled into their existing packages after the Olympics, but non-Virgin customers will have to use a pay-as-you go service.

GARDENING JOBS THIS WEEK

TV to watch Tonight on Gardener’s World Monty Don plants climbing roses and performs essential border maintenance, while Carol Klein reveals how some plants have adapted to dry soil conditions and offers advice about which species can survive with little water. Joe Swift also offers an insight into different garden layouts and designs. To plant Raspberries don’t seem as popular as strawberries, but are low maintenance. By choosing your raspberry varieties carefully, you can enjoy the sweet, juicy fruits from late-June to late-September.

Raspberries need a little space but should grow in a deep tub or grow bags on a terrace. To enjoy fresh raspberries from summer right into autumn, grow at least one summer and one autumn variety. Easy to grow, some varieties disease resistant and if you can’t use them all they freeze perfectly. Go to the garden centre now and buy a plant. Trendy – Hellebores The watch word this week is Hellebores. Whatever I’ve read, surfed or watched seems to include this genus. There are approximately 20 types of Hellebores which grow well in a European climate. They are particularly valued by gardeners for their winter and early spring flowering period; hellebores are popular plants, easy to grow and will reward you with an annual display of gorgeous, large double or semidouble blooms in an array of shades, many of them beautifully patterned. Ideal for beds and borders, patio pots and containers. Prefers full sun or partial shade. Perfect for Tenerife

CARL PATTISON

DEAR CHRISTINE

from Robot, answers your hair questions

These are dark times! I AM often instructed by clients: “I want a colour that shines.” But let’s face facts because it’s not going to be a blonde shade. Blonde hair never shine unless it is sprayed with a gloss or serum, and the reason is simple. Just as black gloss paint will reflect the light more than white, then this is how your hair also reacts. Darker colours throw off the light and, thus, leave the hair looking more healthy and in better condition. But this doesn’t mean to say that if you colour over blonde hair with a darker shade, it will look just as healthy as natural dark hair. The colour process is still underneath. If it’s smooth, glossy hair you’re looking for, then let’s start at the beginning. Any shade from a base 1, which is black on a shade guide, to a base 6, which is a dark blonde, will give you the results you want. These can all be modified by giving warmth to the colour, or coolness - depending on the client’s wishes. But anything lighter than a base 7, which is a medium-blonde shade, will start to absorb the light and won’t give such a glossy finish. Adding colour back to the hair will always make your hair look and feel better, and these colours look fantastic on this year’s smoother hairstyles by enhancing the cut and bringing to life the condition and health of the hair. One thing you must re-

Page 40

member, though, is that these darker colours over your hair cannot be removed without first stripping the hair, which should always be done in the salon. It sounds harsh but, done correctly, there should be no problems. If these colours are placed over blonde hair, there will be little or no chance of removing them without causing great damage to the hair. So think before you act hastily. If you choose to go

darker, then think about how this will affect your skin tone and make-up routine. Anyone with pale skin should stay away from these sorts of colours, which are best used on olive skin tones, or on someone who doesn’t mind using a little more make-up than usual. That’s because these colours can give you a washedout” look if you are not careful. I find that most clients who have these darker colours always need to apply make-up. And walking around without it can look a little scary! If in doubt over such a dramatic colour change, you should visit your salon to have a full consultation. This is when real hair pieces will be placed next to your face to show you the effect these colours will have on your skin tone. Don’t rush into this decision because, as I explained earlier, it is easier to add colours than to remove them.

Your resident Agony Aunt Email: agony.aunt@canarianweekly.com Dear Christine, I’m 61 and have been happily married for 30 years. I have four wonderful daughters, aged between 24 and 29, and a fantastic son of seven. Whenever I meet new friends of my son, they assume I’m his grandfather, which brings a lump to my throat. I tell his friends that I’m an old dad and try not to let the situation get to me. It does, though, and I feel for my son. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Brian

Congratulations on 30 years of wedded bliss and five wonderful kids! Those are major achievements at any age. I have to say, though, that I don’t think you’ve been looking at the situation in the most realistic way. You’re his dad, the one who’s been there for him, looked after him, spent time with him, played with him and done lots of things for and with him. You’re the one he loves, and I doubt your age troubles him at all. To him you’ll just be ‘Dad’. However, if you’re worried about what he may be thinking, why not ask him instead of surmising? I’d hazard a guess that you’re the one who’s been feeling too old when you’re introduced to his friends’ parents. You’ve been

worried about being a dad at your age, so you imagine they must think about it, too. In reality, though, I’m sure they’re thinking either “nice guy” or “not nice guy”, and since your kids love you and let you meet their friends and their friends’ parents, I bet they’re thinking, “nice guy”. If they say, “Oh, I thought you were X’s grandad,” you can simply smile and say something like, “No, I’m his dad.” You might add a joke like, “It’s not the years, it’s the mileage,” or just talk about something the kids are doing. So now it’s over to you. You can continue to think negatively and worry about this, or enjoy the luck of having those five wonderful kids and that lovely wife of yours. Dear Christine, My wife changed her job a year ago and a few months later, she told me that her ex-boss had been texting her. He wanted to take her out but she asked him to leave her alone. Then, last month, she said she’d been seeing him and they’d slept together. I was devastated, but she wanted us to save our marriage and I agreed to try. After the most horrendous fortnight of my life, she told

me nothing at all had happened between them and she had made up the whole thing. I feel so confused. RL

I don’t wonder you’re confused! You’ve been given a whole load of mixed messages, but for what motive? The usual reason for behaviour like this is that your wife wanted to make you jealous. Why? Because she wasn’t sure you loved her. I think the pair of you need to start talking, and I suggest you find ways of showing her your love. A lot of guys think that focusing on earning the daily bread is an expression of love. It’s not - it’s just being responsible. Showing love is showing real interest in that person. This involves listening, talking and sharing with them in the emotional sense, as well as sharing chores and obligations. It also involves cuddles, kisses and consideration of her feelings. As you re-establish closeness, it will be easier to ask her what she hoped to get out of giving you those conflicting messages. By showing her you’ll listen, you’re inviting her to talk. Hard though this shock has been, it could be the foundation for a more satisfying relationship.

Geletin is the hidden agent for veggies VEGETARIANS and people who avoid animal products for cultural reasons may be consuming gelatin in medicines without realising it. Gelatin is a commonly-used coating agent in medicines, but it can also be used as a thickener. Experts surveyed 500 people and found that many who were on a restricted diet would prefer not to take a medicine containing animal products, even if there were no available alternatives. The survey was carried out among a mixed-ethnic population from Manchester, who had consulted their doctors with urological symptoms. Of the sample, 283 people were taking medicines, and 200 said they were not supposed to eat animal products. Most of the 200 patients (88%) following a restricted diet said they would prefer to take medicines containing only vegetable products, with the others saying it did not matter to them. Among the 176 who would prefer vegetarian-only medicines, more than half said they would take a drug containing an animal product if no other alternatives were available. But the remaining 76 patients said they would not knowingly do so. Only 20% of the 176 patients in this group said they would check with their doctor or pharmacist to see if the drug’s content was against their dietary requirements or beliefs. The experts, from Manchester Royal Infirmary and South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, wrote in the Postgraduate Medical Journal that doctors “are fairly ignorant” about some of the substances used in medicines. Their study found: “Patients practising dietetic restriction do not ask what the formulation contains before commencing drug treatment, which puts them at risk of transgressing their belief.” The authors concluded: “Substitution of gelatin with vegetable-based alternatives and clearer labelling on drugpackaging are alternative strategies to help minimise the risks.

Tasty beef and pork could be quick route to a drastic illness ONLY weeks after I highlighted the cancerous dangers of eating bacon and sausages daily, scientists are now suggesting that red meat is unhealthy and can be lethal. Two major American investigations say it increases dramatically the risk of death from heart disease and cancer. Each additional daily serving of processed red meat, equivalent to one hotdog or two rashers of bacon, raises the chances of dying by one-fifth. Conversely, replacing red meat with fish, poultry, or plant-based protein foods contribute to a longer life. Nuts were also said to reduce the risk of dying by 20%, thus making a case for swapping roast beef for nut roast. Data from 121,342 men and

16 March - 22 March 2012

women, who took part in two large US health and lifestyle inquiries were analysed to produce the findings, published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. Their participants’ progress was monitored for more than 20 years and gathered information about diet. In all, scientists recorded 23,926 deaths, including 5,910 from heart disease and 9,364 from cancer. A striking association was seen between consumption of red meat and premature death. Each daily serving of unprocessed red meat, equivalent to a helping of beef, lamb or pork about the size of a deck of cards, raised the risk of death 13%, while processed meat increased it by 20%. When deaths were broken down into specific causes, eating any kind of red meat increased the chances of dying from heart disease by 16%, and of cancer by 10%. Processed red meat raised

the risk of heart disease and cancer deaths by 21% and 16% respectively. Senior author Professor Frank Hu, from Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, said: “This study provides clear evidence that regular consumption of red meat, especially processed meat, contributes substantially to premature death. “On the other hand, choosing more healthful sources of protein in place of red meat can confer significant health benefits by reducing chronic disease morbidity (illness) and mortality.” The study found that cutting red meat out of the diet led to significant benefits. Replacing one serving of red meat with an equivalent serving of fish reduced mortality risk by 7%, and for poultry an even bigger risk reduction of 14% was seen. Legumes and lowfat dairy products lowered the risk by 10%, whole grains by 14% and nuts by 19%.

Here’s a special weekend treat for mums, dads - and all Irish CHILDREN will be celebrating Mother’s Day on Sunday, with Father's day to follow on Monday (over here, anyway). And tomorrow (Saturday) is St Patrick’s Day, renowned the world over as the greatest day of the year for the Irish. That makes it an extraspecial three days for families (even the Brits love to be Irish for the day), because the kids can impose themselves by showing their parents just how much they love them with platefuls of cupcakes. These can be tailored to measure, and can be baked so easily. It takes less than 30 minutes to prepare them, 1030 minutes cooking time, and you will probably find most or all of the ingredients in the larder and fridge.

Page 42

Ingredients 110g/4oz butter or margarine, softened at room temperature 110g/4oz caster sugar 2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 110g/4oz self-raising flour 1-2 tbsp milk For the buttercream icing 140g/5oz butter, softened 280g/10oz icing sugar 1-2 tbsp milk a few drops food colouring Preparation Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. Cream the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale. Beat in the eggs a little at a time and stir in the vanilla extract. Fold in the flour using a large metal spoon, adding a little

milk until the mixture is of a dropping consistency. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until they are half full. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until goldenbrown on top and a skewer inserted into one of the cakes comes out clean. Set aside to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack. Icing on the cake For the buttercream icing, beat the butter in a large bowl until soft. Add half the icing sugar and beat until smooth. Then add the remaining icing sugar with one tablespoon of the milk, adding more milk if necessary, until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Add the food colouring and mix until well combined. Spoon the icing into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe the icing using a spiralling motion on to the cup cakes in a large swirl. So that takes care of Sunday’s in-house celebrations, while St Pat’s Day tomorrow demands that little extra ingredient in the cupcakes, and that can only mean Guinness, together with Baileys cream! You just know there certainly won’t be any complaints from the Irish grown-ups in the household. Ingredients 1 cup Guinness 16 tbsp unsalted butter ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa

powder 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups sugar 1½ tsp baking soda ¾ tsp salt 2 large eggs Two-thirds cup sour cream Baileys ganache filling method 8oz. bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped Two-thirds cup heavy cream 2 tbsp butter, at room temperature 2 tsp Baileys Irish cream Baileys butter cream frosting - method 8 tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature 3-4 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted 4-8 tbsp Baileys Irish cream Baking Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line two cupcake pans with paper liners. Combine the stout and butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the cocoa powder and whisk until smooth. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt in a large mixing bowl. Blend the eggs and sour cream together. Add the stout-butter mixture and beat just to combine. Mix in the dry ingredients on low speed just until incorporated. Divide the batter evenly between the cupcake liners, filling them about 2/3 to 3/4 full. Bake for about 17 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 5-10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. To make the ganache filling, place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Heat the cream in a small saucepan until simmering, then pour it over the chocolate. Let sit for one minute and then whisk until smooth. If the chocolate is not completely melted, place the bowl over a double boiler, or give it a very short burst in the microwave (15-20 seconds). Add the butter and Baileys and stir until combined. Set aside to let the ganache cool until it is thick enough to be piped. Pipe the ganache and enjoy your Celtic treat.

Call to scrap Air Passenger Duty THE Government has been urged to scrap its planned rise in Air Passenger Duty, with a report warning that it will hit families and the economy hard. The World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC) says next month’s 8% rise in the levy will result in a family of four flying to southern Spain paying an extra £52 for their tickets. For the same family to fly to Florida it will cost £260 more, while a family trip to Australia will cost an additional £368. By contrast, abolishing the increase would create 91,000 jobs and add £4.2bn to the economy over the next 12 months, the council claims. It claims that the boost in employment and to the economy would mainly come from increased passenger numbers following the removal of the airport departure tax. Lower-priced airline tickets would also increase consumer spending, said the research, which was prepared for the WTTC by forecasting consultancy Oxford Economics. Air Passenger Duty, which is applied to almost every flight taking off from the UK, has risen sharply since it was introduced in 1994 and is set to rise again next month. The WTTC said that the Government would collect £2.8bn in extra tax from air travellers over the next year, far more than any other country in the world. WTTC president and chief executive David Scowsill said: “APD is a completely disproportionate tax on people’s holidays and is hitting business travel hard. “When the economy needs help, it is economically illogical to continue with a tax that costs the country some 91,000 jobs and as much as £4.2 bn.” The report came as the chief executives of four airlines - EasyJet, British Airways’ parent company IAG, Ryanair and Virgin Atlantic - called on Chancellor George Osborne to scrap the rise in APD planned for April 1. Further increases are planned until 2016, with

Page 44

the intention of growing APD revenue by 46% over the next four years. Ahead of the March 21 Budget, the respective bosses - Carolyn McCall, Willie Walsh, Michael O’Leary and Steve Ridgway - said: “These endless cumulative increases in APD are pricing families out of flying - both from and to the UK. “That means fewer visitors to the UK, which destroys jobs in our tourism, aviation and hospitality industries and chokes off opportunities for young people at a time of exceptional youth unemployment.” According to the airline bosses, the cumulative increases will mean a family of four facing a levy of up to £500 for flying to long haul destinations in 2016 when in 2005 they would have paid just £80. EasyJet’s finance director Chris Kennedy told Sky News: “Our firm belief is that the revenue raised by the Treasury would be more than offset by the damage to the economy. Darren Caplan, chief executive of the Airline Operators Association, told Sky News that APD was having a detrimental effect on airports and tourism bodies as well as airlines. He said when the tax was introduced eight years ago it was set at £5 for flights within the EU and £10 for flights beyond, but had risen by 140% and 325% in recent years respectively. “That’s one heck of a tax,” he said. A Treasury spokesman said: “The Government took action by freezing APD last year and has always been clear that APD would go up this April. The spokesman added that APD was also being extended to private business jets for the first time from April next year, as announced in the November autumn statement, and that the Government did not levy VAT on domestic flights unlike other European countries. Separately, leaders of seven European airlines are warning that a recently introduced EU carbon tax is putting thousands of jobs at risk in the industry and threatening billions of pounds worth of trade with countries such as China.

Bournemouth crowned best beach around

BOURNEMOUTH has been crowned the UK’s best beach destination and was the only UK finalist in the European top 10, where it took fourth place. Jersey’s St. Brelades was named the UK’s second best beach destination while Devon’s Woolacombe took third place. “These awards recognise the UK’s and Europe’s best beach destinations, according to those that really matter – travellers themselves,” commented Emma Shaw, TripAdvisor spokesperson. “Bournemouth has long been a popular seaside resort and recent investment in the

area has clearly paid off – not only has it been named the UK’s best beach destination, up from third place last year, but it’s also ranked ahead of almost every Mediterranean beach destination.” Following its third-place finish in 2011, Bournemouth rose through the ranks to be named the UK’s best beach destination this year. It was joined by two other Dorset destinations: Weymouth in 8th place and Swanage in 9th. Bournemouth is currently undergoing significant improvement with some £11 million recently injected into the seafront at Boscombe. The area has seen the addition of new designer beach ‘pods’, water sports academies, and new bars and restaurants sitting alongside a newly refurbished pier. Tobias Ellwood, MP for Bournemouth East,

commented: “Those that live in Bournemouth have long known what a great town it is, but for it to be recognised by TripAdvisor’s travellers as the UK’s best beach destination really is a tremendous honour for the area.” Home to three of last year’s winners, Cornwall triumphed again claiming four of the UK’s ten best beach destinations: St. Ives in 4th place, Newquay in 6th, Bude in 7th and Padstow in 10th. Malcolm Bell, head of tourism, VisitCornwall, commented: “Cornwall is an iconic destination where our fantastic beaches are one, if not the major draw, be that to swim, surf, walk on or dine beside.” Award winners were determined based on the most highly rated beach destinations by travellers in TripAdvisor reviews.

Unlike any other honours, TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice winners are based on millions of valuable reviews and opinions from travellers around the world. Formula One season revs up again on Sunday in Australia LEWIS HAMILTON, tipped to become a multi world champion in his fledgling Formula One days, knows he will have to knuckle down this season, which gets into gear on Sunday in Melbourne. The McLaren driver did win the title in 2008 after finishing runner-up the year before - by just one point - in his debut season. Since then, however he has discovered women. Well, one woman anyway, in the shapely form of American singer Nicole Scherzinger, and he admits she was a major distraction. So much so that he spent much time visiting her in Los Angeles instead of concentrating on his day job, and, eventually, the relationship got to him. That, plus his running

Shadow of Vettel is hanging over Lewis battle with Brazilian Felipe Massa on and off the track, and the utter domination of Red Bull’s soon-to-be double champion Sebastian Vettel, threw Hamilton completely off course. But Lewis travelled to Australia this week, his head clear, his objective even clearer and in good heart, convinced he can rediscover the blinding form which him such a dangerous opponent in his early days. who finished second to Vettel after some dazzling driving in an inferior car to those of Red Bull. Hamilton also believes his recent move to Monaco has helped increase his feel-good factor. He switched to the principality last week, leaving behind his apartment in Zurich, where he has lived for two years. The 27-year-old initially moved to Geneva at the end of 2007 in a bid to escape the media scrutiny of his life. But he later revealed that tax reasons also played a part, especially after signing a fiveyear, £10million-per-season deal with McLaren just before the 2008 season. However, Hamilton found the quiet life just too quiet for his liking and has opted, instead, for the bright lights of Monaco and the Mediterranean. “I just fancied a change,” he said - as you do with 10 million quid stuffed in your back pocket every year! “It was a bit boring where I lived before, with not many people around, so it was good to move.” But he still isn’t confident of swatting Red Bull aside after trailing in the wake of Vettel for two seasons, and he says quite candidly: “I see Red Bull in front. Behind them it will be tight, and you can be either hero or zero very quickly.” The frictions which were all too evident when he finished fifth in his troubled campaign last season, including regular trips to the stewards for rulebreaking, are definitely in the past. “It is always a great feeling every time I get to the circuit now,” he said. “Sometimes last year I did not have such a great feeling, but this is a new year, a new chapter and a new chance. It is an exciting time.” The contrast last year with Button, who took over his

starring role for McLaren, could not have been greater. Button, driving with consummate ease and great control; Hamilton, blinkered, downright daft and, at times, incomprehensible. “But it didn’t bother me,” he says. “If we had both been very close over the year and I’d lost it when it was fiercely competitive, then I guess it would have been tough. But I was throwing away points and making silly mistakes. “Sometimes I was a little unfortunate, but although it was a shocking year, I was not too devastated by it. You have to draw a line under it. “Jenson did not win the world title, but had he done so, that would have been much worse. I do not plan on that being the case this year and there are still many years ahead.” Christian Horner, the modest wizard behind Red Bull’s immense impact on the F1 scene, simply doesn’t know where his team stand in the pecking order heading to Melbourne. Horner said fuel levels made it difficult in recent testing in Barcelona to know how

competitive the other teams were, two weeks ahead of the Australian Grand Prix. “It’s always difficult to say because teams always run different fuel levels in their cars,” he told Sky Sports News. “That obviously masks performance, but we’ve been relatively happy with our preseason testing. “Yet we know McLaren are looking strong, while Mercedes seem as though they’ve made a step forward, and it would be foolish of us to dismiss Ferrari, so I think we’re set for a really exciting season.” McLaren are again expected to provide Red Bull with their sternest challenges, and Horner believes Button and Hamilton will be in contention. “They are massively talented drivers,” said Christian “They’ve both been world champions, and Jenson had a phenomenal season last year. He seemed to get the team around him and strung a set of results together which was impressive. “If he can carry that form forward, then he can be a real contender, and Lewis is

a hugely-talented individual. He had a difficult 2011 season, but he’ll be looking to bounce back.” But Horner is pretty sure that Vettel can boss the championship for a third year running, and he’s still only 24. “One of Sebastian’s assets is his mind strength,” he said. “He made few mistakes last year and his confidence has grown, along with his experience. “The great thing about Formula One is that with Kimi Raikkonen coming back, we’ll have six world champions on the grid, and I believe we’re in for an exciting season.” It certainly will be for F1 fanatics, especially with the most gruelling championship ever, and wall-to-wall coverage by Sky Sports on its dedicated channel. But don’t bet against Vettel making it three in a row because he appears to be unbeatable, especially with Horner at the helm. It must frustrate the life out of McLaren that whatever they do, whatever they introduce within the legal F1 limits permitted, Horner is always one step ahead.

Match Report By Geoff Huxtable

Headliners facing extreme test IT’S as you were at the top of Division 1 after both Bar 180 A and Xtreme Sports Bar earned comfortable wins. As predicted in this column, the destination of the title will probably not be known until the very last dart has been thrown. Xtreme Sports have the tougher run-in, with matches against Phoenix Bar and Cozy Wanderers to come. Phoenix Bar’s very own WE are getting down to the business end of the season, and it looks like we are in for a fantastic finish. There is a three-way tie at the top of Division One, and all of them secured wins last Tuesday. Summerland Superstars lead on frame difference after a 7-3 derby win over Legends Bar. Tenerife Hammers A rode their luck before beaten archrivals Palms A 6-4 and Hoops were always on control as they overcame rock-bottom Nauta A.

Topgun, alias Paul Messent, hit his second maximum during a 7-1 victory over Ensecan, while Antonio, of Target Titans, bagged his first in a drawn match with The Pub. Yelas bar’s Neil hit a 180 in a 5-3 defeat at Barracudarts, but his team now need one point only from the last two matches to avoid the drop. That point would relegate Tavern and Target Titans. Congratulations to Scruffy Macs, who gained promoted from Division 2 - and in some style - with an 8-0 thrashing of Tenerife Sun!

It’s squeaky-bum time In fact Nauta A, along with Toscales Old Boys - who lost at home to Gaffers A - will be relegated if they lose this coming Tuesday. There are no such worries for Trap Door and Phoenix Knights who are both having a great 2012. Trap Door snuck past Bar 180 C, while Phoenix Knights

Barracuda Bandits are just one win away from promotion to the top flight after a tight victory against Toscales A-Team. They will be up on Tuesday if they can win at bottom team Tenerife Pool Tables. But TPT did upset secondplace Phoenix Potters last week to earn this week’s hat-tip for

Market Taverners beat Lupain 7-3 to leave their opponents in all sorts of trouble. There was a plethora of draws in Division Three - and only C&A Titans were successful, beating Bull Ring Tavern 7-3. Gaffers B were held at home by Legendary Jokers, Exiles B got a point at James Place while Next Door and Dos Hermanos finished level in Malibu Park.

The Roda to nowhere CD Tenerife 0 Roda 0

THIS was a great advert for going to the beach on a Sunday afternoon. After the Lord Mayor’s show is the perceived saying. Tenerife were as poor here as they were great a week ago against Real Madrid Castilla. Coach Andres Garcia Tebar, bizarrely, shuffled the pack and, with captain Kiko suspended, he elected to rip up the successful blueprint. Instead of replacing like for like and giving Aridane a run up front, he went for the slighter Perona, with an extra attacking midfielder in support. Roda must have thought it was Christmas when they saw the team sheet. Their game plan was to park the bus and frustrate Tenerife. It worked like an episode of the A Team. Chupi was outstanding in the heart of the defence and, along with partner Hector, they snuffed out the few home attacks. They had done their homework and were happy to concede the lion’s share of possession and territory in exchange for putting 10 men behind the ball in the final third. It left Tenerife with nothing more than long shots and set-pieces. They carved out 17 corners, most of which fell to centre-back Pablo Sicilia, without ever really testing Bocanegra between the sticks. Tenerife’s best effort came early when a sweet Chechu volley from the edge of the area was, amazingly, tipped over the bar. It was heading for the pigeon hole, but Bocanegra leapt to his left and saved the day. The gamble of playing leftwinger Victor Bravo in central midfield was a shocker. He created nothing and after 15 minutes, he was shifted out wide, with Kike playing off Perona and Loro slotting in to central midfield. But this led to chaos as

passes went astray and the formation sagged. This was music to the Roda ears. Seven minutes into the second half, Bravo was hooked. But it wasn’t until late on, when Aridane and Zazo came on, that Tenerife looked balanced. By this time Roda were set, and even had a sniff of an upset victory. Tenerife banged away but with no craft or guile, the elusive goal was never coming. Late on they had a fine penalty shout when Aridane appeared to be held back in the box, but tellingly, the players didn’t argue too much when turned down. On paper, it looks like two points dropped, but I’m sure most fans would have taken four points from this match and Castilla two weeks ago. Canarian Weekly Ratings: Tenerife: Razak 6, Cristóbal 6, Sicilia 6, Tarantino 7, Llorente 7, Marcos 7, Loro 6 (Zazo 67min 5), Chechu 7 (Aridane 70min 5), Víctor Bravo 4 (Ferran 53min 6), Kike Lopez 6, Perona 6.

16 March - 22 March 2012

La Roda: Bocanegra 8, Patuso 6, Héctor 7, Chupi 9, Pererira 6, Jesús 6, Espínola 7, Pablo Garcia 6 (Pierrick 81min), Sergio 6 (Polo 88min), Berni 6, Megías 6 (Iker Torre 84min). This Sunday, Tenerife are away to Rayo B. The match marks the 200th league match for goalie Sergio Aragoneses, who returns after a two-match suspension and cannot wait to put the gloves on. “I hate not playing! It’s annoying. Sunday will be special for me and, hopefully, for the team as we need to keep winning matches. The spirit is good so let’s hope we win.” An old boy awaits. Aitor Nunez was controversially axed by Tenerife’s old regime in the summer, despite wanting to stay at the club. He offered to take a large pay cut but was still shown the door. “I have been waiting for this game all season,” he said. “It’s been circled in my calendar. Everyone knows

I didn’t want to leave. But what can you do?” Tenerife’s match on Sun-

day is swiftly followed by a rare midweek match. Struggling SS Reyes will be in

Puzzle Rating: Very hard

Horoscopes of the week Pisces

(February 20th-March 20th) The last few months have proved to be both expensive and exhausting. When, exactly, have you given yourself time to get over this? You haven’t, according to your stars, so please make some time for yourself. After all, if you don’t, then why should anyone else? A colleague or neighbour promises an apology you had almost given up on hearing. ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) Some sort of upheaval is likely in your home or workplace, and you may have to adjust yourself to new circumstances. Someone appears to be particularly well-starred at this time and is growing on you more and more by the day. It is important you stay on the right side of a superior, and not antagonise him because you will be needing his help very shortly. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) An interesting journey is indicated, which may cause you to feel slightly under the weather. However, this should pass by on Tuesday. Material gains are in the offing, which should help to improve your appearance or surroundings. Don’t be too proud to accept help from others as they will enjoy feeling useful. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) It is time you decided exactly what you are aiming for, and the best way to achieve it. Children may require more of your time and attention than usual. A business matter appears to be progressing too slowly for your liking, and you will have to do a bit of pushing. You may be in for a bit of a shock when you discover what a socalled friend has been saying. CANCER (June 22ndJuly 23rd) Any business deal is under lucky influences just now, so clear up any outstanding matters. Encouraging prospects are apparent in the romantic field, but you may have to take the initiative. Some sort of reunion is indicated. Look into any new ventures

very carefully before you commit yourself, or you could let yourself in for more than you bargained for. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) Don’t make any changes or alterations without careful planning first or it could lead to a big mistake. Be careful not to push a close one too hard or they could retaliate. Something you have been planning to buy may turn out to be more expensive than you had anticipated. An important letter is forecast, which makes you want to alter your plans. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) Make an effort to see more of a new acquaintance because you should be able to help each other in some way. Do join in the activities in your surroundings as you should thoroughly enjoy them. Relatives could cause you a few problems just now, but try not to let them get you down. You’re in control, but you just don’t realise it yet. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) Relatives could take up more of your time than usual, and this week you will find out who you really care for - and who you’d prefer to keep a distance from. Don’t let jealous comments stop you from going for your dreams. This is a week in which you have the backing of the stars to make the impossible possible. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) A way can be found to solve a difficult situation if you look hard enough. Well-

meaning but naive advice from friends has meant that you’ve taken a step back, so it’s time to rectify this matter. New flirtations make for a dramatic week and one in which you may have to make a choice between two people who are important to you.

SAGIT TARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) You can look forward to the end of a very difficult and frustrating period. This week brings significant opportunities for changes, and most Sagittarians will find much more time to relax and enjoy life as the month wears on. Don’t be offish with new people as they may hold the key to you getting the future of your dreams.

C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) Your plans will have to be changed after the weekend, so try to keep commitments to a minimum. Don’t be rude to the new partners of your chums because there is more to them than first meets the eye. Time taken for older people can reveal much about your past. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) It is clear you have been through a period of fluctuation and your confidence has taken a knock. However, on the emotional scene you are much in demand. Listening to what other people are doing with their lives should give you the confidence you need to take down those barriers and take away the limitations
