Canaries No to oil! Go-ahead for offshore drilling fuels a major bust-up THE Spanish Government’s decision to allow Repsol to drill for offshore oil fields in the Canaries has intensified a row with Canary Islands leaders. Canarian authorities have reacted angrily to the giant oil company being given permission to conduct a search 37 miles off the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. So much so that the Canary Islands Government yesterday afternoon (Thursday) agreed to take legal action against the Royal Decree that grants permission to prospect for oil. Canarian ministers had already warned that a spill of any kind would wreck beaches, drive tourists away and damage the Islands’ fragile economy irreparably. Canarian President Paulino Rivero, who has pledged to fight the decision “tooth and nail”, said: “This is not compatible with the kind of sustainable tourism we want - it benefits only Repsol.” And in his State of the Union-style address on Monday, Rivero reiterated his stance against drilling. “It is still something we are against,” he said. “The central Government is for it, Repsol is for it. But we are not. We will do everything we can inside the law to stop this.” There are suspicions also that it has been rushed through by Madrid in order to pre-empt any legal measures the Canaries could initiate to put the brake on prospecting before it had started.
Yet José Manuel Soria, the Government’s Minister for Industry, Energy Tourism, said all the signs showed there was a lot of crude oil in the area, and of good quality. He added: “It seems that Morocco is already carrying out its own research in the same region, in its own maritime area.” Rivero is being backed, inevitably, by various political parties and ‘green’ groups, especially Greenpeace, who are concerned about the impact on the environment. He also believes that an oil spill would spell the end for the Canaries. TUI, owner of Thomson and First Choice holiday brands, has already expressed worries that any spill might permanently damage the
Canary Islands’ reputation as a holiday spot. “A tragedy of this kind would not just ruin a single tourist season, but would see the Canary Islands forever associated with oil,” said Harald Zeiss, TUI’s Head of Sustainability, in a letter to Fuerteventura’s ruling body. But Spain’s new conservative government, which gave the go-ahead for drilling, hopes oil and gas fields hidden under the Atlantic seabed will allow the country to reduce oil imports. A Government statement read: “Apart from reducing our almost total dependency on imported gas and petrol, it also has great potential to create highly-qualified jobs and benefit the Islands’ economy.”
Repsol would be expected to pay for any clean-up operation caused by an accident, and extraction licences would have to be approved separately. On the plus side, the Spanish company claims it would create up to 5,000 jobs, and would certainly force the price of petrol down. That would be welcomed by motorists, both here in Tenerife, on the other Islands and on the mainland because it is now at its highest-ever level. But local environmentalists said the only jobs would be for overseas specialists, and Iván Darias, of the Ecologists in Action group, added: “This is a threat to the Islands’ economy, which is based on tourism, and to a rich source
of maritime biodiversity. Both the technology and the depth of the fields they seek are similar to those used in Louisiana in 2010.” Fears over oil spills have increased since the explosion on BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig, off the Louisiana coast, which killed 11 people and released millions of barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Greenpeace spokesman Mario Rodríguez agreed, saying: “The government is creating the same sort of risks that can lead to accidents like the one seen in the Gulf of Mexico.” It is not the first time Spain has been on the verge of authorising prospecting off the Canaries, but previous plans floundered for a
variety of reasons, including environmental concerns. But this time, said Soria, Spain could no longer allow itself the luxury of not authorising such explorations, and that the Canaries would benefit from any discoveries. Around 2.6 million British holidaymakers visit the Canaries every year, and if many of them went elsewhere because of polluted beaches, then Rivero’s prediction of an end to the Canaries would almost certainly come true. Incidentally, oil prices have fluctuated sharply over the last year. A barrel of crude was as low as 40 dollars a barrel two years ago, but that has steadily increased. Today oil is $125 a barrel, up from $95 a few months ago.

It costs more to fly to Spain than New York CANARIAN travellers often plump for New York or Caracas rather than mainland Spain, and no wonder because it is actually cheaper! The difficulty the Canarian tourist sector has of retaining its number of domestic visitors is simple: the price of flights. The Tenerife and Gran Canaria hotel employers agree that the cost of travelling from mainland Spain to the Archipelago sometimes exceeds even that of trans-oceanic flights. Jorge Marichal, President of the hotels’ association Ashotel, says: “The entrepreneurial sector has always claimed that to come from the Peninsula is very expensive. “And now, with the closure of Spanair, it has complicated the matter even more.” Marichal believes the best choice for the Canaries is to set a flat-rate ticket price for travel between the Islands and the Peninsula. He added: “We believe it is only fair that the most it should cost for a ticket to the Canary Islands should be the same as it would be to travel to Cadiz, which is the southern-most south of the Peninsula. “In the best case possible, a ticket to the
In their manifesto they state that the Canaries is an extreme case, with more than 340,000 jobless people, including 51% youth unemployment, which means that one third of the population now live below the poverty line with little or no resources. Over 50% of those employed are on a temporary basis, which leads to ongoing insecurity and entry and exit from the labour market. The average wage in the Canaries is 15.3% below
Maria’s stamp of approval GILES PAXMAN, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman, spent his lunchtime yesterday (Thursday) in Club Oliver, Santa Cruz, for the official launch of Maria Leng as British Consul for the Canary Islands. Officials from local authorities and members of the British community were there to celebrate with Giles and Maria.
Adeje 'green' care growing RECYCLING is on the increase in Adeje, with residents becoming more environmentally friendly, slowly but surely. Each ton of non-recyclable waste collected from the municipality costs the Town Hall 32,08 euros in disposal fees, and Adeje produces 110 tons of waste per day.
Police have their hands full A 30-year-old old man and two 17-year-olds were arrested last Thursday in connection with a break-in and robbery of 30 televisions and 10 videos, valued at 15,000 euros, from a shop in Calle La Trujilla, Arona. There were so many goods seized by police that several vehicles and journeys were necessary, to transport them.
Sting concert’s set to buzz mainland costs about 350 euros, and then only if you book it months in advance at a discounted price. “Companies have taken this as the norm and it is the only alternative, not only for tourism but also for those who have to go from here to Madrid, for example, for a medical issue or on business.” Marichal feels there must be a solution “in our financially fragile territory to reclaim not only the residents but also those who come to visit.” And he fervently hopes
that Iberia Express will keep the Canary Islands in mind when establishing connections, and help to fill the gap left by the demise of Spanair. He also expressed particular concern about flights to Barcelona because, he said: “Now we are almost incommunicado with them.” Yet the Canary Islands are still enjoying a tourism revival. In the first two months of the year, more than 1.8 million foreigners flew in, representing a 5.2% rise against last year’s figures, and
33.7% of the total number of arrivals. Last month alone saw an increase of 2.4%, thanks to the Germans, while there were fewer tourists from the UK. The figures were supplied by Frontur for the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, whose Jose Manuel Soria stressed that the major markets continued to be UK, Germany and France, although the biggest rise was from the Netherlands, with an increase of 24.2% more tourists.
No to labour reform
THE UNIONS of the CCOO and UGT have called a general strike for Thursday 29th March. The rationale behind the mobilisation of members is clearly stated in their motto, “No to labour reform.”
NEWS IN BRIEF
the state average. There is a steady decline in the number of people affiliated with Social Security. Over the last three years there has been a weakening of essential public services: increased waiting lists for medical care; increased school failures and drop-outs, delayed care for dependents and so on. The Unions state that the current situation is due to the economic model of the Canary Islands being based on tourism and construction, strongly dependent on outside influences. The labour reform in a nutshell, regardless of type of contract or seniority, makes it easier for companies, businesses to get rid of employees. As a consequence, the ‘pay out’ the unemployed person receives is less. It is a reform against working conditions, as wages,

hours, jobs, geographic mobility and any other work situations will now depend on the employer’s options of trading. Therefore the trade union movement, workers and women workers have decided to use their legitimate right to express their strongest protest against labour reforms imposed by the Government which is deemed as an unfair labour reform, ineffective and useless, framed in an unprecedented attack on the welfare state and public services, which will cause further recession and unemployment. As we go to print the Canary Islands Government with the Department of Labour, have announced they will meet today (Friday) at 10am with the strike committee to hear their proposals and set the minimum service requirements for the 29th.
Government spokesman, Martin Marrero, said that there will be a basic criteria “proportional” in the maintenance of “indispensable” basic services. Conchi Morales, Tranvia Tenerife, said that next week they will announce the changes and minimum service offered by the tram services. A spokesperson for both Loro Parque, Puerto de la Cruz and Siam Park here in the south will be open as usual and “we will welcome the visitors as we do everyday.” A number of the large excursion operators have moved their planned Thursday island tours and boat trips to Friday as a precaution, as client safety is their priority. The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, due to perform at the Infanta Leonor auditorium in Los Cristianos has also been cancelled.
DOMINIC MILLER, Vinnie Colauita, David Sancious, Peter Tickell and Jo Lawry will be supporting Sting at his 30th June concert, being held at CD Tenerife’s Heliodoro Stadium, Santa Cruz, from 10pm. Tickets are available from www.ticketmaster.com and 5,000 were snapped up in 10 hours. The remaining 9,000 are expected to fly out rapidly as well.

Summer time rules IT’S THE catchphrase of the week, “Spring has sprung” and the move into summer time marks a seasonal change in Tenerife as the ‘Swallow’ population return to their native countries. In the early hours of Sunday morning (25th March) British Summertime comes into effect. British Summer Time operates from 1am on the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October. The UK moves its clocks forward from Greenwich Mean Time by one hour (GMT+1). This is known as British Summer Time or BST for short. Since 1996 all clocks in the European Union, of which the UK is a member state, have changed on same dates and at the same time, 1am GMT. British Summer Time clocks change at 1.00 am (01:00) Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) The massive ‘swallow’ population that swell the tourist figures of Tenerife during the winter also get ready to migrate back to their native countries of origin, usually before the Easter break. The more mature winter visitors that visit to gain the benefits of the island sun are so called ‘swallows’ as they are migratory, similar to birds. Bird migration is the regular annual seasonal journey undertaken by many species of birds. Interestingly, approximately 1,800 of the world’s 10,000 bird species are longdistance migrants. Many of the bird populations winter in warmer climates in the south. The primary motivation for migration appears to be food; for example, some hummingbirds choose not to migrate if fed through the winter. Also, the longer days of the northern summer
provide extended time for breeding birds to feed their young. As the days shorten in autumn, the birds return to warmer regions where the available food supply varies little with the season. Most migrations begin with the birds starting off in a broad front. Often, this front narrows into one or more preferred routes termed flyways. These routes typically follow mountain ranges or coastlines, sometimes rivers, and may take advantage of updrafts and other wind patterns or avoid geographical barriers such as large stretches of open water. The specific routes may be genetically programmed or learned to varying degrees. The routes taken on forward and return migration are often different. Many, if not most, birds migrate in flocks. For larger birds, flying in flocks reduces the energy cost. Geese in a V-formation may conserve 12–20 % of the energy they would need to fly alone. Strangely, bird migration is not limited to birds that can fly. Most species of penguin migrate by swimming. These routes can cover over 1000 km. Emus in Australia have been observed to undertake long-distance movements on foot during droughts. So, that’s where the name comes from, with many of our winter tourists visiting for the same reasons, warmer climate, food, shelter – you get the picture. Now, if you’re shortly returning home don’t forget that you can still keep in touch with us here at the Canarian Weekly through our website www.canarianweekly.com, which is regularly updated, through our Facebook page – Canarian Weekly and each week you can view the latest edition online accessing through the website and clicking the top right hand corner where it says, “view whole newspaper online.” And finally, enjoy the summer and we’ll see you soon.
Chancellor has senior moment
The UK Chancellor George Osborne delivered his third Budget on Wednesday and once again it has divided public opinion. The following morning most of the UK papers focused on the effect it would have on pensioners, but closer inspection reveals the so called ‘Granny Tax’ is far from a scandal. Whilst it is true that pensioners will no longer get a larger personal tax allowance compared to standard taxpayers, the changes are being phased in and it does not affect everyone. Pensioners will see a pension increase this year, even accounting for taxation.
loopholes for those with properties overseas. Child benefit will be scrapped for couples earning more than £60,000 with a sliding scale reduction for those earning over £50,000. There was bad news for motorists in the UK as fuel duty was frozen, not lowered, a pre-announced rise of 3p will still happen in August. Smokers were hammered with 37p smacked on a packet of fags, but alcohol duty was frozen. Maybe Osborne feels the public needs a drink after digesting his figures? Businesses were spared any real sleepless nights and corporation tax was cut to 24% and will fall again to 22% in two years time. It’s a bold move, but Osborne has a bit of ammunition after UK growth was predicted at 0.8% for 2012 and 2.7%
by 2014. These figures by the Independent Office for Budget Responsibility allowed Osborne to give a little back. There was the expected rise in flight tax but strangely it’s good news for Tenerife. Air Passenger Duty is going up 10% across the board. This will see a family of four paying nearly £400 in tax to fly to Australia and £260 to go to the United States. But Tenerife is in bracket A and this levy goes from £12 to just over £13. That is just £53 for a family of four, making Tenerife a cheaper holiday destination in real terms. The budget hardly caused a ripple in the stock exchange but the Pound has strengthened since. The official rate was tickling the chin of 1.20 euros to the pound at the end of trading. (Thursday).
Hospital workers lose car-park perk THE Canarian Government’s austerity measures are starting to bite, and the latest victims are hospital staff. They have already suffered deep budget cuts, and this

The state pension on average will be worth over £140 a week come August. Personal tax allowance has been raised to £9,205 and this will benefit more than 25 million people by at least £220 a year. Also the highest rate of tax has been dropped from 50p to 45p. Osborne is gambling on this incentive luring back the rich and also enticing business to base employees in Britain. The move is also designed to boost the economy with the extra money being spent on the high street or invested. This boost for the higher earners was a sweetener as Osborne has added a new stamp level duty of 7% for homes worth more than 2 million. This is up from 5%. There are also new taxes on homes owned offshore and a tightening of the current
week they lost their free parking. Employees of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) and the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC) are said to be furious at the removal of what they consider to be a legal right. It is understood the unions claim their members need
to use the available parking areas at the hospitals as there are no other ‘free’ free spaces. They claim that charging staff is tantamount to an employee tax. It’s a story that mirrors the UK, where there has been a massive public uproar over the price for car parking. There are some
free parking areas for staff in Britain, but this is subsidised by public charging and has increased by as much as 33% in the last year. It is also claimed that the NHS rakes in £100 million a year from parking charges - and maybe this news has helped influence local thinking.

Stella’s Union flag fury AS WE go to print, the Team GB kits which will be worn at the London Olympics have been unveiled amid controversy. The Stella McCartney designed outfits feature a blue Union flag design. The kit features a red trim on the neck, trainers and socks but the main flag is all blue. The athletics kit sports a large X shape design which is already drawing criticism for looking like an endorsement for the ITV show X-Factor. McCartney has defended her designs: “The first place to start on a project like this is to look at the Union flag. For me it’s
one of the most beautiful flags in the world and it was important for me to stay true to that iconic design but also to modernise it and present it in a contemporary way. Ultimately, we wanted the athletes to feel like a team and be proud with the identity we created.”

ST PATRICK'S DAY THE SUN was shining as Tenerife celebrated St Patrick's Day last week. It's one of the social highlight's of the year and once again the bars were heaving all day and night. Oasis Fm broadcast live from Leonardo's Bar in central Las Americas and the place was packed!
There was live entertainment from White Knights, Destiny, Dee Daniels and house band Loaded. You could hardly shoehorn another person onto the terrace and the owner David Elliott was delighted: "It's been amazing. We have more than doubled the trade we did last year. Everyone has had a really great time and we cannot wait for next year!"
Recycling in Adeje
RECYCLING in Adeje has increased with the collection of packaging, cardboard and glass which has seen a remarkable growth in the last four years. You would think more consumption, more waste. But, according to figures residents and visitors have thrown away over 3 million tonnes less waste since the start of the economic recession, compared to 2006 when nearly 47 million tones of waste was dispensed off. Only selective collection (packaging, paper and cardboard and glass) figures show an increase between 2008 and 2011 moving from 2.4M tonnes to 2.7M as far as plastic containers, cartons and aluminum are concerned increasing to over 13M. A glance at the chart shows that people in Adeje are becoming more
Page 6
environmentally friendly, largely thanks to the various awareness campaigns relating to recycling, for example, ‘We can do it. Adeje can recycle’. Councillor, Diaz Delgado warns that there is still much work to do if we want our area to approach rates similar to those municipalities in northern Europe. In that regard, he regretted that the collection of packaging, plastics and aluminum, deposited in the yellow containers is still well below the collection of glass and paper. Although the recycling of the latter two materials is the most popular and more widespread, said the mayor, we understand that it is not the only one. “if each one of us is able to make one change in our habits we can improve the environment.” “Recycling helps reduce the problem of excess waste we generate, and if everyone is aware of this we can help stop the continued depletion
of natural resources, which in many cases cannot be replaced, and also helps us to save.” The management of residual waste costs the council 32.08 per ton of rubbish. Adeje produces about 110 tons of waste per day, representing a bill of 3,528.80, which, multiplied by 365 days a year, makes 1,288,012 at the end of each financial year. The waste station in Adeje consists of three waste collection bins, two with hydraulic compactor trucks for the transfer of large containers (40 cubic meters for the compaction of plastic packaging waste, cans and cartons, and one for cardboard compaction. The third, without compaction, is for the collection of glass. All of them allow the accumulation of large amounts of waste collected in different company vehicles operating on public roads, and thus make the transportation of waste to authorised areas more
efficiently, since the distances travelled, are considerable at times. For example, paper and cardboard, once loading is complete, these containers are carried by trailer truck to Guimar. Pakaging heads to Arico , and glass, to the port in Santa Cruz, where, some 20 tonnes of glass, travel by boat on average six times a week to Gran Canaria and then by road to the industrial estate Agüimes, undertaking a return to Adeje once delivered to the authorized agent for recycling. In total 142 workers are employed to deal with waste, 48% of them perform street cleaning, preferably in the morning shift / evening, 44% are refuse collection staff, which includes selective, appliances, washing of containers on night shift and, finally, the remaining 8% consists of managers, middle managers, administrative staff, workshop staff, machine cleaners, etc.

San Isidro social and civic centre ready for action
New timeshare laws welcomed SPAIN has finally fallen into line with the rest of the European Union and introduced new timeshare laws.
THE municipality of Granadilla de Abona has announced that the new social and civic centre in San Isidro has been completed with a budget of almost 400,000 euros.
residing near or in San Isidro, so the facilities were a pressing need “worthy” and “adequate” to cover these basic and essential services.” The new social and civic centre is in response to previous claims that the area lacked up-to-date facilities.
The Spanish Government had been dragging its feet on the new legislation and was facing a massive fine until they finally caved in. The European wide law sees a raft of changes which are aimed at making the system more transparent. Changes include a fourteen day cooling off period. This is raised from the current ten day system. This covers the cancellation time from signed agreement to completion. So if a contract is signed and agreed on the first day of a month the customer has until the fifteenth to cancel the arrangement. The fourteen days is not a period to decide if you
want to sign or complete a deal, it’s only there to change your mind IF you have already signed. Also there is a complete ban on deposits. It is illegal for Timeshare companies to take any form of payment on the day a deal is signed. Contracts must also be provided in the language of the purchaser. So if you are English and you purchase in Spain, the documentation must be in English. The measures are being seen as a massive boost to the consumer but there are plenty in the industry who are welcoming the move. “This will sort the good guys from the cowboys” one source told Canarian Weekly. “There are a lot of good honest companies who have already adopted these new measures. Only those who have something to hide will be concerned.”
Francisco Lizarza, Chairman of the Resort Development Organisation (RDO) in Spain and head of the Spanish lobby group, said: “This new law sweeps away the confusion that has existed in Spain over the past year and timeshare companies can fi-
nally make the appropriate adjustments to their operations. “The law will help boost consumer confidence in Spain, the most popular timeshare market in Europe, where almost half of European owners have chosen to buy.”
Pat on back for firemen THE mayor of Granadilla, Jaime González Cejas, congratulated the Association of Fireman ‘Guayota’ for its “exemplary” intervention in the early hours of Saturday when fire occurred in the mountain area of Madre del Agua, which caused the burning of four hectares of land. About 1.15 am a fire was started near a section of forest track. First on the scene were three members
of Guayota, later joined by more troops, who left the scene at 7.00 am, when the team had succeeded in extinguishing the fire. Plus two firecrews from the Consortium of Las Chafiras attended. Gonzalez Cejas, said, “it is a “luxury” to have professionals of this magnitude that demonstrate on a daily basis the good work being done for the welfare and safety of the municipality.”
The multi-use space covers three floors and is situated in Calle Corina Garcia Alonso, near the church. The 495,893 sqm new build has basement storage facilities, two additional floors with three connecting rooms, a service space with office and WC, plus roof area. Jose Manuel Garcia Mendoza, Department of Works said, “the heart of San Isidro has undergone considerable development over the past decade, with over half the population (45,000) of the municipality

Cocaine gang feel the force POLICE recovered 15.2 kilos of cocaine, 30,000 euros and several firearms when they arrested 27 members of a gang who specialised in flying in cocaine to the Canary Islands. The gang used a chemical procession at their Madrid laboratory to separate the cocaine, which was
then put back in the suitcases and flown from Madrid to the Canaries. The Guardia Civil found the drug hidden in falsebottomed suitcases, impregnated with foam rubber. Most of the gang are Colombian, with six Spaniards, who carried the
drug over to Spain from Colombia by air initially. In addition to drug-trafficking, they also face charges of money-laundering and illicit association. The Guardia Civil’s inquiries began in July 2010, when they discovered that cocaine was being introduced on Gran Canaria.

The girls taking part are presenting the most beautiful and interesting places, together with their historical and artistic heritage, via a series of reports, to be broadcast on TV channels. Highlights include the Church of St Ursula and the hamlet of Taucho, as well as coastal areas and beaches. The poster features Pilar Sarrión, a young Adeje model, and will serve as a promotional platform in the run-up to the event throughout next month April. It was produced by
photographer and stylist Alberto Rubio Joa Dugarte and the image is fresh and natural, with the model wearing a simple green dress against a white background. The bright green of spring symbolises new life, filled with joy, enthusiasm, excitement and the desire to open new things. Adeje has taken its lead in this event from various regions in the North, which have held similar “Miss” contests. These include Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Icod, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Victoria de Acentejo, St. Ursula and the Sauzal.

The Consulate’s roadshow success THE British Consulates based in Santa Cruz and Las Palmas recently held a number of successful road-shows in Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. The events, from 6-8th March, were part of the British Consular Network’s ongoing outreach programme, designed to provide important information for British residents in Spain, and especially in the Canaries. Here in Tenerife, they were staged at Los Cristianos and Santa Cruz, and were well received. A total of some 500 people heard from Maria Leng, the British Consul to the Canary Islands, and Lorna Geddie, a representative from the Pension, Benefit and Healthcare Team (PBHT), based at the British Consulate in Malaga. Maria, who was appointed
Page 10
British Consul last year, said, “It was great to see so many people at the events. “I hope all those who came along found the information useful, and that the presentation has encouraged them to think about their rights and obligations as residents in Spain.’ At each event, Maria highlighted the various services provided by the Consulate and also stressed the importance of registering on the padrón.
As well as being required by law for anyone resident in Spain permanently, the audience learned that a person had to be registered on the padrón in order to access many local services and discounts. Following a quick “fact or fiction” quiz, which showed how many rumours circulate in the expat community, Lorna Geddie spoke about pensions, benefits and healthcare. Some people were
surprised to find out that under the current rules, as long as a person has worked for at least one year in Spain, and 15 years in the EEA in total, they may be entitled to some Spanish pension. More information is available from Spanish social security offices. Lorna also went on to stress the importance of keeping both the UK and Spanish authorities up to date with any change in circumstances. She highlighted that failure to do so could affect the payment of any pension or benefit owed to you and, in some situations, could even be considered an offence. Following the main presentation, audience members had the chance to put questions to the panel, and one of the most popular topics was how to access healthcare. Lorna explained that being resident in Spain did not entitle you to full public healthcare automatically, and that residents should not be using a UK-issued European Health Insurance Card to access healthcare here. Instead, she said, there were several other ways in which a person should look to register with a doctor. She urged those attending to make sure they were registered correctly for healthcare so they could access it easily when needed because, across Spain, the authorities are becoming stricter on how customers are using the system. Policing the police! LOCAL police in Arona have been in the dock this week and, as usual, the taxpayers are footing the bill. A number of police vehicles were found to be missing ITV stickers, yet all roadworthy motors, including state and emergency vehicles, must display one or face a fine. Some eagle-eyed officials noted the errors and a complaint was made. Subsequently, the Town Hall had to pay the 840-euro fine before the vehicles could return to the action. “It’s a disgrace.” said one member of the public. “It’s almost as though there is one rule for one and one rule for the rest of us. “Every day, we see roadblocks, and you hear stories of people being fined for trivial matters. And here they are, doing the same thing. It stinks.” It is unclear whether the stickers were accidentally
missing from the windscreens, or whether they hadn’t been issued in the first place. However, it seems that this is not an isolated incident. One vigilant reporter - who shall remain nameless - has discovered other police vehicles without the relevant legal ITV notices. A motorist told Canarian Weekly: “Police patrol cars and motorcycles are not passenger cars. These vehicles are performing emergency services. “It is vital that they comply with the traffic laws like everybody else. These cars have to be safe for the occupants and also other users. It all seems a bit rich.” It is an embarrassment for the Mayor, Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron, because, technically, his Town Hall is responsible. But this incident highlights a growing feud between the local police and town hall over budget cuts. It is understood that the constant, financial handcuffs have badly affected police morale.
Arona’s all-seeing virtual eye is here ARONA Council has launched a novel way of attracting tourists with a gallery of 360-degree panoramic images of the region, built into its website www.arona.travel. The new utility, devised by the council’s tourist department, is a novel way of offering users an opportunity to make a virtual visit to the municipality. Jose Nino Francisco, Arona’s Tourism Councillor, said: “This is a marketing strategy,
and we broken the physical presence with the use of technology. “We believe that the more visual information provided, the more specific the potential of what we have to offer tourists in Arona.” The website gallery shows the region’s landmarks, its natural beauty and the theme parks, plus rural and coastal areas - in fact a dynamic perspective of Arona “This is as close as it gets to being here,” added Cllr Francisco. “We consider it to be most crucial in tipping the balance towards a real visit. It also helps distinguish us from our competitors.”

Imperial Tai Pan Restaurant – Top Class LAST Friday saw the official launch of the Imperial Tai Pan restaurant (formerly Slow Boat Teppanyaki) in the Safari Centre. Now don’t worry it is still part of the Venture88 stable, but it has been brought bang up-todate. Invited guests and dignitaries enjoyed an exquisite banquet of 17 dishes ranging from what you could call almost a signature starter – 88 Dragon Salmon Roll, consisting of a light omelette, layers of salmon sashimi covered with a seared salmon skin crust blowtorched to perfection to tenderloin of pork with a yakatori sauce from the Teppanyaki table. Reservations are a must at the magnificent Imperial Tai Pan Restaurant, at the Safari Centre in Las Americas - and that comes as no surprise. It is magnet for lovers of oriental food, and has a deeprooted history. That began with the original Slow Boat,
a family business spanning 20 years of experience in oriental cuisine, now Tai Pan puts together an eclectic mix, with a superb blend of gourmet Chinese, Sushi and Teppanyaki. The restaurant has indoor and terraced dining areas, both of which are set in stylish, up-to-date oriental surroundings. And these are more than complemented with the superb and friendly service from their helpful staff. The literal meaning of the
23 March - 29 March 2012
word Tai Pan is top class and that’s exactly what the Venture88 Group restaurant is – Top Class. From the location, to the table settings and of course needless to say the food, which is outstanding. Tai Pan adds a modern spin with a host of 70 new dishes so there is definitely something for everyone. Included in the new menu are Crispy Shanghai Balls – shredded cabbage, finely minced pork, ginger 5 spice, garlic and herbs, they were absolutely delicious. Now
we’ve all eaten spring rolls, but the mini crispy rolls just melted in your mouth. The list goes on, all the dishes were flavoursome and the freshness danced on your tounge, from the crispy tempura chicken to the sirloin steak rolls to the king prawns in armagnac and yellow bean sauce. To conclude, all I can say is the best way to describe how good the food is would be for you to go and visit yourselves, you will not be disappointed. Tai Pan can be contacted on 922 795 395.

Toulouse – gunman killed in shoot-out A MAN suspected of killing seven people in France has died in a frenzied shoot-out, hit by police bullets as he jumped from a window still firing wildly at the end of a 32-hour siege. Mohammed Merah, 23, was shot in the head after officers stormed his flat where he was holed up. He filmed the three deadly attacks in Toulouse and Montauban over the past fortnight in their entirety, according to prosecutor Francois Molins. Merah staged a dramatic last stand as he burst out of a bathroom and blasted an automatic weapon at officers, before diving for the window while still shooting. The gunman, who reportedly told negotiators he wanted to “die with weapons in his hands”, was found dead on the ground, according to French interior minister Claude Gueant, who watched the drama while peaking from behind an armoured vehicle outside the flat. The police unit that carried out the raid “had never seen anything like it before,” Mr Gueant said, confirming two officers were injured. Final negotiations were unsuccessful late on Wednesday after Merah indicated he would not surrender and if there was any attempt to seize him he would kill police, according to the minister who ordered the final raid. Officers entered the property in the southwestern city of Toulouse, creeping step-by-step around the flat, checking each room carefully before they reached the bathroom when Merah burst out, bombarding them with
Page 14
bullets. Mr Gueant had earlier said police wanted to capture Merah alive. A series of explosions, known as flash bangs, were heard at 10:30am (9:30am GMT), marking the beginning the end of the stand-off. Police, who used special video equipment to search for Merah, had been concerned the property might have been booby-trapped. Mr Gueant told reporters that Merah came out firing “with extreme violence”. Police “tried to protect themselves and fired back”. “Mohammed Merah jumped out the window, gun in hand, continuing to fire. He was found dead on the ground,” Mr Gueant added. Heavy gunfire was heard at the scene as the raid took place. The building was surrounded by hundreds of police and Merah had been holed up in the flat since an earlier police assault on Wednesday. Elite police squads had set off sporadic blasts overnight some which blew off the flat’s shutters - and cut off power to the evacuated building as they tried to persuade the suspect to give himself up. Gas supplies had reportedly been cut on Wednesday morning. Street lights had also been turned off, making Merah more visible to officers with night vision goggles.
1D hit No1 spot in US ONE direction have made US chart history after becoming the first British group to go straight to Number One with their debut album release. The former X Factor contestants topped the US Billboard 200 after selling 176,000 copies of Up All Night.
The album only managed to get to Number Two in the UK chart when it was released in December. The boy-band, whose members are Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, are signed to Simon Cowell’s label Syco Music. Cowell said: “I couldn’t be happier for One Direction, it is an incredible achievement. They deserve it. They have the
best fans in the world.” Reacting to the news, One Direction member, Styles said: “It’s beyond a dream come true for us. “We want to thank each and every one of our fans in the US who bought our album and we would also like to thank the American public for being so supportive of us.” His bandmate Horan said: “We just found out that we are Number One in America and as you can imagine, we are over the moon. “When we got put together as a group, we couldn’t imagine ourselves coming to
America, let alone releasing our album here, so for us to be sitting at the top of the US album charts is unbelievable. “We are so grateful to everyone who has supported us in the US.” Known to their fans as 1D, the boy-band’s chart success comes in the same week it was announced they have secured their own US TV show. On Monday, children’s channel Nickelodeon confirmed the group would be starring in their own show. One Direction have amassed huge popularity on social
networking sites boasting 12 million followers on Twitter and 3.6 million on Facebook. They were signed by their X Factor mentor Cowell after coming third in the TV competition in 2010. Another UK boy-band The Wanted have also had huge success in the US this year after their single Glad You Came was covered on hit US show Glee. The previous highest entry for a UK group’s first album was Number Six, when the Spice Girls entered the charts with their album Spice in 1997.
Ex-Emmerdale actress joins Doctor Who FORMER Emmerdale actress Jenna-Louise Coleman will be Doctor Who’s new assistant, it has been revealed. The 25-year-old, who played lesbian Jasmine Thomas in the soap, starts filming her part in the sci-fi show in May and will make her first appearance in the Christmas Day special. Karen Gillian, who plays current assistant Amy Pond, is due to leave the BBC drama this year along with Arthur Darvill, who plays her onscreen husband Rory. Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat said it was “like a miracle” when Coleman auditioned with current Doctor, Matt Smith, as the partnership “came to life”.
He said: “It always feels like a miracle when you find the right person because we saw a lot of brilliant actresses. “There was a moment I remember from the second time she came in, and they were auditioning together and they both looked frightened doing a Doctor Who scene, and it just was an instant poster.” Although Moffat remained tight-lipped on the new series, he did reveal that Coleman’s introduction would not be “the usual story”. He said: “It’s a very, very different way for the Doctor
to meet his new friend.” Fans will see six episodes this year, with eight more in 2013. Moffat revealed that Gillian would be written out in the fifth episode of 2012 in a “final encounter” with the weeping angels. He said: “Not everyone gets out alive and I mean it this time.” As well as Emmerdale, Coleman’s other credits include Waterloo Road and she will soon appear as Annie Desmond in Julian Fellowes’ new ITV1 drama, Titanic. The actress said she was “beyond excited” to join the show and “so relieved” to finally be able to tell people she had the job - six weeks after finding out. She said: “I was in Marks and Spencer holding an avocado deciding what goes best in a salmon salad, that was my big debate at the time, and then
I got the phone call and just had to put everything down and leave the shop and go for a walk. “I told my mum but I couldn’t tell anyone else so I was this weird excited but had to act completely normal.” Coleman said she knew she wanted the job after the audition process was “so much fun”. She said:“Working with Matt it felt so spontaneous, and we just didn’t know where it was going to go and he’s got so much energy that’s its just infectious, so that’s what I feel excited about.” Coleman also revealed that her new role particularly delighted one member of her family - her grandmother. She said: “It’s her favourite, favourite show and she loves Matt as well so to give her the news was really exciting.”

Rental agreement with the option to purchase THE rental agreement with purchase option is becoming an alternative possibility to those people who want to buy a property. The economic breakdown and the end of the real estate boom have led to new ways of purchasing, and the above mentioned agreement is, in fact, two contracts in one (double contract). On one side, there is a rental agreement (normally for five years). Then there is another contract which is the “option” to purchase. In this one, the landlord gives the tenant the choice to decide whether to sign the purchase agreement. A percentage of the rent can be used to pay towards the purchase price. This is a kind of exclusivity right to buy by paying a “prime bonus”, to be discounted from the purchase price if the tenant decides to buy. The relevant documents should state the asking price of the property at the time of executing the option of purchase; the deadline of the letting agreement
Page 16
(and deadline to execute the option); the rent, and the amount to be deducted from the final purchase price (the total of the rent paid or, as usual, a percentage of it); initial amount paid. The “prime bonus”is not necessary, but it is a guarantee for the landlord that the tenant really wants to buy the property. If the lessee at the end gives up, he would lose the deposit (bonus). The letting agreement with purchase option would be a kind of contract by which one party gives the other party the possibility of deciding about the signature of the purchase contract in a certain period of time, and under determined conditions. The main elements are: the right of option in favour of the tenant; object (property); future price; deadline. Bear in mind that the tenant has a privileged right of acquisition by law. This means that if the landlord wanted to sell the property he should offer it first to the tenant. The option of purchase gives the option to
the tenant (and the price is fixed from the very beginning). If, at the end of the contract, the lessee decided not to buy, he would lose the monies (rent and prime bonus, if any). The deadline of the option is not normally the same as the deadline of the rental agreement. Normally, the option expires two years after signing. It is possible to sign the purchase contract before the deadline as it is convenient for both parties. One very important thing is that both contracts are joined. This means that if the tenant is not up to date with the monthly instalments, he would lose the right of option. Normally, one month delay is not a problem, but a two-month delay would mean losing the right of option and the monies paid to date. In any case, everything can be re-negotiated. The option to purchase is subject to Transfer Tax. In addition, during the rent period the landlord has to declare the rent in his return tax (IRPF), and the tenant can deduct it in his own one. After the sale, the landlord must declare the Capital
Gain Tax and the lessee deduct it. More about renting and tourism law I have received the following emails from a reader, who wishes to remain anonymous. Thank you for writing your article which a friend has just posted to me in the UK. I have already received an 18,000 fine and have withdrawn all my adverts from the internet. I depend on rental income and have already lost a great deal both in income and an 18,000-euro fine. I have two questions: Firstly,As I advertise in the UK,bank the income in UK, pay tax in the UK and send a contract written under UK law, can I claim that my rental is conducted under UK law and not Canarian law? Secondly, as my adjoining property is timeshare, as are most of those in my part of the complex, can I claim that my area of the complex is tourist and not residential? Answer to question 1 Your rental agreement cannot be excluded from the Spanish law because the property is located in Spain. The Spanish
law cannot be ignored from the private law point of view (contracts subject to Spanish law),administrative law point of view (rules applicable to shortterm rental agreements), tax law (taxes to be paid in Spain by non-residents). Of course, you cannot report the rent to the Spanish authorities, but it does not mean that Spanish law is not fully applicable to the rental contracts. Answer to question 2 I understand that it would not be possible to consider the area of your apartment as tourist in a residential complex. I would need more information about the development to see whether it is tourist or residential. In addition, the Tourism Law states different rules for tourist rental agreements (to be registered at the Tourist Board, unity of trading) that must be taken into account. After my personal answer to the reader, I received this one in return:
I very much appreciate your answer. Those of us owners who visit the Island for a quick week just once a year and do not speak Spanish, nor receive newspapers, are not aware of the complexities of this law. Ignorance is no defence, but gossip suggested that the law was not being implemented. I wish the TB had sent a letter to all communities to clarify the rules, so that they could make us all aware and give people time to ask questions and to stop letting or appoint agents. I realise they had no legal need to do so, but it would have been a much nicer way without causing such uproar. But, of course, it would not have made so much money in fines! NOTE: I have seen different reasons for fines made by the Tourism Board. In all of them, there were two scenarios: one for the lack of complaint sheets and another one for the lack of a book of visits. In these cases, they did not mention anything regarding qualification of the complex, as tourist or residential.

Marion’s major doggie task ONE of the main jobs carried out by Marion Gonzalez, who manages Accion del Sol, is to find new homes for the refuge’s many dogs. It is a tough task, especially in these times of severe recession, and most people like the smaller dogs, which leaves lots of larger breeds needing rehoming. Marion is always looking for people travelling to Germany with Condor, Air Berlin or Tui Fly, who would like to help the dogs. All it costs is a little bit of your time at the airport while Accion del Sol staff check
the dogs in - the reservation will be made and paid by the charity. Volunteers will be met by staff from the Aktiontier charity - Accion’s German sponsors - at that end, who will then transport the dogs to their destination. If you are travelling back to Germany, or simply visiting the country, and would like
to help, then please call the refuge on 922 778 630. Accion del Sol’s next fundraising event, on 8th April, starting at 11am, will include a fun run with your dog, an Easter Egg run for children, plus lots of fun and games for all the family. Call the number above for more information.
One lucky puppy was recently adopted from the refuge by Jade Ambers, who already has a Labrador, so the little one can look forward to a happy life with a readymade family. There are many gorgeous dogs at the Granadilla refuge in need of a home, so please pop along if you are considering adopting a fourlegged friend. If you have any spare time, please lend a hand at this magnificent centre, where you can take a dog for walkies, play with the puppies or just pay a visit. Accion del Sol is open Monday-Friday from 3-6pm, and you can call 922 778 630 for more information.
Ibex team’s marathon task IBEX Insurance have joined forces with supporters of Gibraltar charity AKIN (Association for Kids In Need) in an adventurous project to raise money for the UK-registered charity Street Child of Sierra Leone.
Marathon running has become a popular challenge for charity fund-raisers over the years, and the Ibex/Akin team are busy training for their firstever marathon, which is being in the small town of Makeni, in northern Sierra Leone. There has never been an organised ‘Open’ marathon in the country, which has a tropical climate and high humidity, and 70% of the course will be on packed mud roads. In addition, the event is being run during the start of the rainy season, when temperatures will reach
the mid-20s. There is a reason behind the Los Cristianosbased Ibex team for going that extra mile, so to speak. In 2008, the UN Human Development Index again ranked Sierra Leone last out of 179 countries, giving it the official title of the poorest country in the world. One in four children does not live to see his or her fifth birthday. The 11-year civil war between 1991 and 2002 displaced half the population and the memory of atrocities carried out by child soldiers lives on and has left a legacy of orphans and broken communal and social bond.
The goal of Street Child of Sierra Leone, (SCoSL) is to reduce the number of children living on the streets; to show them love and care by tending to their nutritional, health, recreational, educational and psycho-social needs. It also entails rebuilding trust in adults, reconciling the children with their families and communities, or settling them in alternative loving environments. The SCoS is a volunteerled charity, committed to spending 90% of all donations on high-impact projects. During a trip to Sierra Leone in 2006, that
AKIN’s Jimmy Bruzon became involved in the Regent School Refurbishment Project in Freetown. This project was later adopted by the AKIN charity and Jimmy, who leads their Sierra Leone Team. For Jimmy, the marathon will be his first return to Sierra Leone since 2006, and he says: “Going back will be a dream come true." The Ibex team for the Kiln Sierra Leone Marathon on 9th June is made up of Lianne Gilbert, Richard Hill, Phil Langley, Eva Massetti, Elainne Perez, Alicia Torrecilla Cortes and David Whitmore. It’s a superb cause and an exciting adventure, with all Ibex ruuners meeting their own travel and accommodation costs in full, so that every penny raised goes towards their ambitious target of £15,000 to help Street Child with their important work. Donations can be made via your local Ibex Insurance office, or via the web at www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ IbexAkinKilnSLMarathon.
Toby’s written promise to to his tragic cancer friend TENERIFE ‘Swallow’ Toby Young has decided that his book, Waking Up To Sunshine, which is being sold on Amazon, will be used to raise cash to fight cancer. It follows the recent death from cancer of a very good friend, who was one of the first to buy the book when it went on sale last year. His story is one of coping with the trauma of learning
Page 18
that he had only months to live when diagnosed with stomach cancer; how he managed to survive, and how he has enjoyed the next decade of winters in the Tenerife sunshine. The book is available for download to e-readers from Amazon. Last month’s tragic death of his friend in Tenerife, after she had been overwhelmed by cancer rapidly, prompted the
author to donate 10% of net royalties to Cancer Research in her memory. A review of the book on Amazon describes it as “truly inspirational, as well as being a remarkable story of the triumph of love and dedication against almost overwhelming odds … highly recommended as a beacon of hope for cancer-sufferers and their carers, and extremely thought-provoking for the
rest of us … you will laugh and cry a lot.” Those resident in Tenerife, or who winter here, will also identify with some of the comical experiences described in the book about life in the sunshine, and the fun of watching the antics of the Brits and others abroad. Please spread the word. It can be downloaded for less than 3.50 euros (£3).

THE RESIDENT'S CHOICE! Titanic Sunday 25 March, ITV, 9pm Titanic is a four part serial created by BAFTA-winning producer Nigel Stafford-Clark (Warriors; The Way We Live Now; Bleak House) and written by Oscar and Emmy winner Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park; Downton Abbey) to mark the hundredth anniversary of the world’s most famous maritime disaster in April 1912. It sets out to tell the story not just of a single ship, but of an entire society – one that was heading towards its own nemesis in the shape of the First World War as carelessly as Titanic towards the iceberg. Titanic as she sets out on her maiden voyage with the upperclass family with their suffragette daughter and their warring servants; the wealthy elite of American society; the Irish lawyer in Second Class with his embittered wife; the young cabin steward and the impetuous Italian waiter who falls for her; the Catholic engineer fleeing Belfast with his wife and family to escape the sectarian conflict; the mysterious stranger in Steerage fleeing who knows what. And then there are the officers and crew. As their stories interweave and we find our first impressions are often undermined by what we learn, there is one thing that we know for certain and they do not. That not all of them will survive.

The Voice
Britain’s Got Talent
Saturday 24th March, BBC One, 7pm
Saturday 24th March, ITV1, 8pm
The Voice has arrived in the UK. It all begins with the first of the blind auditions and a spectacular group performance by the four coaches - Jessie J, will.i.am, Danny O’Donoghue and Sir Tom Jones. The premise is simple: the search for the UK’s next great voice. Only people with real vocal talent will be invited to blind auditions, where each artist auditions on stage for the four A-list coaches who sit with their back towards them. The coaches hit a button on their chair if they are impressed with their voice, coming face-to-face with the artist for the first time. Unconcerned with appearance, their auditions are about one thing and one thing only: the voice. Each of the coaches has only ten places on their team, so has to select carefully the voices they want to work with. If more than one coach turns their chair, the power shifts to the artist and the artist then has the choice of which of the coaches’ teams he or she wants to join. The artists are selected, mentored, and trained by their coaches who are four of the most successful figures in the music industry. When each coach has a full team of ten artists, they then develop them through the remaining stages until one artist is named ‘The Voice UK’.
Britain’s Got Talent is back on the road with the Judges trawling the length and breadth of the UK in search of Britain’s best talent. Hosted by award-winning TV favourites Ant & Dec, Simon Cowell is joined on the exciting new panel by actor and comedian David Walliams; singer, songwriter and dancer Alesha Dixon; and returning Judge, Amanda Holden. This year the winner will not only have the opportunity to perform at the 2012 Royal Variety Performance, they will also receive a life changing sum of money which will come from Simon Cowell’s own pocket. Expect the unexpected on Britain’s Got Talent, anything goes from dance troupes to acrobats, magicians to comedians and dancing dogs to mind-blowing contortionists. The show is open to any performer of any age, from any background, with any talent - all they need is a skill and star quality which they think will impress the Judges.

Gary Lineker presents highlights from the Premier League, with analysis from Alan Shearer and Lee Dixon. Manchester City head to Stoke, searching for their first away win in the Potteries since Tony Pulis's side returned to the top flight in 2008. Elsewhere, Bolton entertain fellow strugglers Blackburn at the Reebok Stadium in a vital relegation battle.
Pop and Easy Listening. Stephen Fry narrates a series tracing the roots of light entertainment, from variety to Strictly Come Dancing and all points in between. Music had always been at the heart of variety, encompassing everything from operetta and balladeers to big bands and crooners, but in the 1950s rock'n'roll and pop arrived on the scene, the concept of the teenager was born and things became more divided. Television didn't really know how to cope with pop - so the viewer in the 60s was fed a diet of Val Doonican and Engelbert Humperdinck, and Top of The Pops was predicted to be a flash in the pan. During the 70s, bona fide pop stars such as Cilla and Cliff hosted their own Saturday night shows until punk reared its head and split the scene once again.

Big Fat Gypsy Weddings Channel 4, 20:20 This episode finds a community at a crossroads, as the battle to preserve the gypsy and traveller way of life intensifies. Seventeen-year-old Irish traveller Freda has grown up happily alongside nontravellers. But now she's about to be married, and she feels strongly about returning to her traveller roots. Romany gypsy elder Billy Welch is determined to protect his people's right to hold a horse fair each year in Appleby. Billy is given a police escort to his granddaughter's first Holy Communion. In this first installment of the returning Perspectives documentary strand, actor David Suchet, a keen amateur photographer, follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, Fleet Street photographer Jimmy Jarche. The film takes David on a very personal and immersive journey through the archives to discover more about his grandfather’s work in capturing iconic images and key historical moments during the early part of the 20th Century. He sets himself an assignment to meet the standards of modern day Fleet Street photojournalism by emulating and in some cases replicating Jarche’s classic photographs, with the aim of getting his pictures into the Sunday Times magazine. David’s journey takes him around the country, from a South Wales coal mine to 10 Downing Street, and from archives to art galleries. It provides an insight into Britain then and now through the images he uncovers and attempts to capture, shows how skilled photographers have to be in order to get the shot, and the challenges facing them. Woven into the narrative is David’s story of the relationship with his grandfather, and his own passion for the unique power of photography. Ultimately David will discover if he is equal to the task of taking photographs that bear comparison with those of his grandfather and that stand up to the ultimate test – publication in the leading newspaper supplement. After uncovering the depth, range and quality of Jarche’s archive, David also attempts to discover what the experts’ view is of his grandfather’s work and invites their appraisal of its importance and where he sits among the pantheon of acclaimed 20th century photographers. Jimmy Jarche was a daredevil photographer who stopped at nothing to get the best shots – risking his life to scale tall buildings and climbing ships’ rigging in stormy seas. Visiting Getty Images’ renowned archive, David marvels at the images his grandfather was able to get onto the front covers of magazines and newspapers. “What strikes me, are all these front covers. They’re all people. And that is how I remember him. He was really a people’s photographer.” Using his grandfather’s Leica camera, David tries his hand at portrait photography – with models such as animator Nick Park, with Wallace and Gromit – posing for him. “Jimmy was able to get along with anyone - it was a quality that stood him in good stead as a photographer. I find that many of his portraits really look beneath the skin to capture the sitter’s character. I’d like to try my hand at doing what he did.” South Wales is the next destination, where in the summer of 1931 Jimmy was sent to photograph the mining communities of the Rhondda Valley. David works to replicate the atmospheric shots his grandfather took of the local people and workers, and speaks with them about how their area has changed. He also meets present-day miners, who emerge from the pits covered in soot. “I really didn’t know that mining still existed in the way that it existed 50, 60 years ago. You know I’m witnessing the past in the present. It’s schizophrenic for me to see miners come out in that state. It reminds of so many of my grandfather’s photographs, I mean it hasn’t changed.” David visits the archives of the imperial war museum with his brother John Suchet, to examine photographs from Jimmy’s time in North Africa and Burma during the Second World War. He then tries to get a sense of the challenges that face a war photographer, seeing just how difficult it is to take accurate pictures in the middle of a gun battle during training with the British Army. “The language Jimmy might have used to describe my performance under fire I suspect would not get past the censor. Even though this wasn’t a real fight I can tell you it’s incredibly hard to operate a camera with gunfire raging about you. It only gives me even more respect for Jimmy and all war photographers who really do go into battle.”

But what will Jayne and Chris think of their attempts? And will the judging panel’s comments influence the viewers’ final verdict? Presenters Phillip Schofield and Christine Bleakley will be overseeing proceedings, and as the grand final comes to a close, the votes will be counted and one celebrity will have made it through the blood, sweat and tears and skate away as winner of the series.
Formula One: Malaysian GP Highlights BBC 1, 2.45pm Jake Humphrey presents highlights of the Malaysian Grand Prix from Sepang, the second race of the new Formula One season. Last year’s pole sitter Sebastian Vettel negotiated his way round the 3.4 mile circuit with perfection, despite the KERS power-boost device in his car malfunctioning. The German went on to take a second successive chequered flag of the season ahead of Britain’s Jenson Button, who began the day in fourth, by 3.2 seconds. Renault’s Nick Heidfeld joined them on the podium by clinging on for third. Arguably the day’s major talking point was the collision between old rivals Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso with 10 laps to go - an incident that proved costly to their podium chances.

Gill and Rachel go to Bristol to advise on a rape and murder case which bears striking similarities to an infamous case from 13 years ago. At the time of the original investigation, Gill helped catch the perpetrator, Jeremy Leach. Leach was convicted for the rape and murder of four women but now he is claiming that he is innocent. Another woman has been raped and killed using Leach's exact MO - could the real murderer still be out there? At home, Rachel discovers that her brother Dom is prostituting himself in her flat. Later, she learns that the CPS will not be charging her ex-boyfriend, Nick Savage, with her attempted murder.

The gangs use an array of sophisticated equipment to steal customers' bank account details - secret cameras record pin numbers and skimmers copy account details from the magnetic strip on the bank card, while some criminals even use false ATM fascias which they fix over real machines. Romanian gangs have a monopoly on the trade, the equipment and the rewards - in the first three months of 2011, detectives from the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime unit arrested 120 Romanians for ATM crime. Conclusion. Trouble seems to be brewing in the pretty village of Ford Florey when a tract of waste ground dubbed 'the Swamp' becomes the focus of a land dispute between two old agricultural families and a band of travellers. Things get nasty at the town's annual fair when a woman is shot for real during a shootout reconstruction at the Wild West show. As Barnaby and Jones investigate, they uncover a series of seething grudges within the village. Does the Swamp hold the key to identifying the murderer?

Panorama: The Honeymoon Murder BBC 1, 9pm In November 2010 a newly-married couple began their honeymoon in South Africa. By the end of it the bride, Anni Dewani, would be dead and her husband Shrien accused of plotting her murder. In this Panorama special investigation, Jeremy Vine examines the case against Dewani as he fights extradition to South Africa to stand trial for Anni’s murder. South African police and prosecutors have openly stated that Dewani is their man. With access to police statements, witnesses and key evidence including the post mortem report, the Panorama investigation reveals inconsistencies which may call that certainty into question. Using CCTV footage never before seen publicly, Panorama pieces together key moments in the case for the first time. The footage captures the moment Dewani is said to have commissioned his wife’s murder as well as images of the hours leading up to Anni Dewani’s death and the moment he allegedly paid off one of the killers. We also see footage from the days prior to the murder as the couple honeymooned in their Cape Town hotel, revealing a side to their relationship different to that which has so far been portrayed. Did wealthy businessman Shrien Dewani arrange for a taxi driver to have his wife killed or were he and Anni just a honeymoon couple like any other?
As Phil desperately fights to hold his fractured family together, Jay's whereabouts alarm him. Lucy arranges a lavish night out for Lauren's 18th, leaving Whitney fretting that she may not be able to afford her extravagant plans. Jean organises a tribute night to Heather at the Vic but Alfie and Roxy worry about Shirley's reaction to the event.

White Heat BBC2 , 9pm It is present day and painful wounds from the past are reopened as the foursome continue to sort through the flat. Back in 1979 it’s the winter of discontent: strikes are causing chaos, rubbish lines the streets and a General Election is imminent. The seven are now in their early thirties but only Jack, Jay and Orla still live in the flat. The former flat mates come together in the pub to celebrate Alan and Lilly’s engagement. Alan’s news confirms Jay’s sense of alienation. He has to hide his sexuality at work and worst of all from his family. Now he decides it is time to tell his parents that he is gay. Margaret Thatcher’s election victory serves as a reminder to Jack about his failed political ambitions. Seeing Charlotte again also reminds him of what he’s lost and he decides to get clean and stand as a Labour Party candidate. Lily and Alan’s wedding reception is in full swing when a stop and search encounter with the police gets Victor arrested. It is down to Jack to save him, but in doing so he knows he will risk his new political career and any chance of winning back Charlotte…

W C CHOICE Hairy Bikers' Bakeation BBC2, 19:00
The Hairy Bikers continue their journey in Germany, one of Dave's favourite countries. Travelling from the wine region of the Rhine Valley to the spiritual home of beer, Bavaria, they discover Germany's passion for bread of every shape, size and flavour. They prove that German cuisine isn't all sausages and beer, but based on regional specialities from pretzels and Germany's white gold - white asparagus to kirschwasser and Black Forest gateau. The Bikers turn out first-class potato bread with asparagus soup and their new and improved version of the 1970s classic Black Forest gateau. As they approach the end of their ride in Bavaria, they borrow a communal village wood oven to rustle up bierocks meat-filled rolls - the perfect accompaniment to a stein of beer. They follow the Zoigl star, symbol of local micro-breweries and find themselves singing along to an oompah band in a traditional Bavarian tavern.
Tonight ITV1, 19:30 Bamber - The New Evidence. Jeremy Bamber, one of Britain's most notorious killers, was convicted in 1986 of the mass murder of his entire family. He was sentenced to life behind bars but has always protested his innocence. In this programme, former detective Mark WilliamsThomas is given exclusive access to new evidence that could lead to the case being referred back to the Court of Appeal.

Spring is sprung…
WITH the amazing weather we have been experiencing lately, it is hard to tell, but this week is the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. It is time to take a good look at your property and decide what you can do to brighten it up, and make it look smarter and fresher. Often, because we are so used to our surroundings, we tend not to “see” them any more, so try to look at them with a fresh eye as you would if you were a stranger. What would be your first impression? Could it be improved, or does it look a bit worn and tired (I know the feeling)? If you are a believer in spring cleaning, you will be moving everything around anyway, and you can see if your room can be laid out in a different way. Also take a look at your curtains and throws, and see if a change is needed. Adding a dash of colour can
lift a whole room for little expenditure. If you have had your mattress for several years, perhaps it is time to change it. After all, a good night’s sleep is important for all. Our best-seller is a model which has a sprung centre, and 6cm of visco elastic. This is an ideal combination of firmness at the core, and a soft upper layer for comfort. Curtains and sun-curtains are another way of changing your room completely. Sunblock curtains are extremely important here in Tenerife. They can protect your furniture from fading, and will help to keep the rooms cool and dark. Technology has changed the type of sun-curtains available. We can still supply the plastic sunblock, which is the cheapest option, although it is now rather more attractive as it comes in white, rather than grey, with silver backing. We also use white material sunblock, and have sunblock material as well, in more than 20 colours. That means it can be co-ordinated with the rest of the interior, and you
no longer need two separate curtains. Sofa beds are also something relatively rare in the UK, but quite commonplace here. Obviously, if your property is rented out, this increases the number of people you can accommodate and, therefore, increases your income. But even for residents, a sofa bed can be very useful for guests, and we all know that it’s surprising how many friends and family we have once we have moved to Tenerife. Again, technology and design has moved on, and the latest sofa beds do not compromise on comfort as a sofa, and the beds have proper sprung or visco mattresses. You can’t tell by looking at it that it is a sofa bed, so you can always fib if you don’t want someone to stay! Respraying your furniture is another possibility which can make a huge difference to your room, particularly if you change the colour to white or cream. So take a fresh look at your home and see what you can freshen up for Spring.

saving in CTFs to transfer into higher-rate paying Junior Isas. Which? found that the average Junior Isa is paying a fifth more interest than the average CTF. A Nationwide CTF, for example, pays just 1.1% a year compared with its 3% Junior Isa, which pays 2.1% and a 0.9% first-year bonus. Even worse, the best CTF rate, of 3% from Yorkshire Building Society, has a 0.7% bonus which disappears after the first year. By contrast, the best Junior Isas are paying 3.02%, with no strings attached. Even if the difference in the annual rate of return between
CTFs and Junior Isas is just 0.5% a year, children with CTFs could miss out on more than £300 million in returns over the next ten years. Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, says: “Junior Isas are a welcome addition to the savings market but it’s vital that the government does not penalise those children who were born before these new savings products were introduced. “The Government must change the rules to allow savers to access the best rates available for children’s savings regardless of when the child was born.”

Getting to the root of your gardening problems! Email: David.hudgell@canarianweekly.com
Mulch is working wonders all over MULCH does many wonderful things for your garden. It conserves water, cools plant roots, feeds the soil, smothers weeds, etc. There’s no question that every garden deserves a layer of mulch. Wait until the soil warms up and dries out a bit, before replenishing your mulch. Be sure to keep it away from the stems and crowns of your plants and, if you’re hoping for some self-seeding volunteers, give them a chance to germinate before you cover the bed with mulch.
Now is the time to take action against weeds as well, with some pro-active weeding. Damp soil makes it much easier to pull young weed seedlings, but don’t try to compost weeds because they will come back to haunt you. Most of what you clean up can go into your compost pile. It’s best to start a new pile now and leave your old pile to flip and use. Dispose of any plant material that shows signs of disease and any seed heads, weeds or otherwise, which could become a problem.

GARDENING JOBS FOR THIS WEEK Take cuttings from delphiniums using strong young shoots, and root them in free-draining compost Wash off greenfly from shoot tips with soapy water Feed rhododendrons, azaleas, pieris and camellias with ericaceous (acidic) plant food
HERE in Tenerife, we seldom have to worry about the garden being too damp for a good old tidy-up and prune, but in the UK it’s a different story. It’s always “wait and see” because if it’s not raining at this time of the year, then you’ll probably encounter the odd morning frost. While there is no harm in cleaning up fallen branches and debris, you should wait until the soil is no longer wet enough to form a ball in your hand, before walking on it and compacting it. But don’t wait too long to start your clean-up, because it’s much easier to cut plants back before the old growth gets tangled up in the new growth. To start your clean-up, remove and compost any dead annual plants that remained over winter. These will not return, and any selfseeders will already have done their job. If you didn’t prune back your perennials in the autumn, they’re probably looking pretty ugly now as we are deep into spring. Many perennials actually prefer to be left standing throughout the winter, for extra protection. But by definition, herbaceous perennials will die back to the ground during winter. If you did leave your perennials standing, it’s safe to begin removing winter mulch and pruning them down to ground level once you start to see new growth at the base of the plants. Some shrubby plants with woody stems (artemisia, buddleia, caryopteris,
lavender) need to be cut back each spring, because they bloom on new branches only. You prune these in the spring, to limit winter damage and to encourage the plant to start sending out those new flowering branches. But it is best to wait until the danger of a hard frost is past. Most of these woody perennials will let you know when it is pruning time they show signs of opening buds on the lower stem portions, or have new growth at the base of the plants. Depending on where you are gardening, some perennial plants will never quite go dormant, but they may still need tidying up. Plants like Epimedium, Hellebores, Heuchera and Bearded Iris retain their leaves all winter. Spring is the time to trim back the tattered foliage and encourage new growth to come in. If you left your ornamental grasses up for winter interest, cut them back as soon as you can get to them. You don’t need to wait for new growth. Cut grasses to within a few inches of the ground and they will come back up when they’re ready. Spring rose care depends very much on your climate. Roses grown in warm climates, where they never go dormant, benefit from a good pruning and the removal of the majority of leaves. That shocks the rose into thinking it is dormant and needs to wake up to start growing again. Where roses did go dormant, spring care should begin just as the leaf buds begin to plump up. Most spring-blooming trees and shrubs set their flower buds in the summer or autumn of the previous year. Pruning them in the spring,
before they’ve bloomed, would mean pruning off this year’s flowers. Most evergreens should require little to no spring care, other than some tidying up. Spring is a good time to fertilise evergreens, because they are actively growing at this time. However, if the soil is healthy and rich, you should need to feed your evergreens only about every other year. Look for a well-balanced food, labelled especially for evergreens. Most plants enjoy a good feed at this time of the year, when they’re having their initial growth spurt. If you have rich, healthy soil, all you need do is add a bit of top dressing with compost or manure or a complete slowrelease organic fertiliser. If you prefer using synthetic fertilisers, you can start applying it once your plants show signs of new growth. Spring is the ideal time for dividing or transplanting. Try to do this as soon as possible after the plant emerges. It’s amazing how quickly plants recover from this abuse if you catch them early, when the weather is still mild and they’re raring to grow. Staking is one of the most tedious gardening tasks, but the sooner you stake, the easier it is on your plants. True, they look ugly for a few weeks, but think of the headaches you’ll avoid by letting your plants grow into the stakes, rather than trying to squeeze the plants into them later. The finishing touch in the spring is edging. A crisp edge makes a garden bed look polished. It also helps prevent your lawn from crawling into your flower bed. So don’t underestimate the power of a clean edge.
Several shrubs with lowgrowing stems can be propagated by layering, such as honeysuckle, mock orange (Philadelphus), rhododendron, magnolia and forsythia Dig up and divide clumps of winter aconites Plant new shrubs and hardy perennials Cut away old foliage on Christmas roses to prevent hellebore leaf spot spreading Sprinkle fertiliser over flower beds and around shrubs and roses
Cover rows of strawberries with cloches to encourage early fruiting Plant early potatoes outside in rows, or in large pots of compost Spray fruit trees and bushes with fungicide to prevent powdery mildew disease attacking them Pick off faded and yellowing leaves from Brussels sprouts to stop disease spreading Sow seeds the following crops outside or under cloches: carrots, beetroot, broad beans, salad onions, cauliflowers, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, spinach, leeks, lettuce, rocket, coriander, mixed salad and stir fry leaves, radish, turnip, peas and Swiss chard

from Robot, answers your hair questions
Washing basics
I’VE been getting a few questions in the salon recently about a matter as simple as washing your hair. It seems that a few of you are stuck on the basics and also, a few of you seem to be shampoo shy. As we live here in Tenerife, we have to put up with a few more of the elements which affect our hair than you encounter, say, living in the UK. We have wind, rain, severe heat, cold, baking sun, plus sea and sand to contend with ...i got asked this week if it was bad to wash your hair everyday...no worse than washing your face everyday.. as long as you put back what you and nature takes out...
use the right shampoo and replenish with conditioners and you will be fine...there nothing worse than seeing dirty hair or washing it and seeing sand run out.... would you leave this dirt on your face?your hair just as i hope you keep yourself clean needs to be washed regularly...my record is three weeks from an old client in england ...yes she never washed her hair for three weeks and did this regularly...i hope non of you get anywhere near this record?....your head sweats just as your body does... half your body heat leaves through your head..dont as i heard one client tell me this week wash your hair in shower gel....im not going over which ones to use again...its just simple common sense....
when washing your hair never scrub at it to get it clean..massage gently to remove dirt build up...wash it twice as we do in the salon... this is to one remove the dirt then second to cleanse and replenish the scalp...condition frequently and massage this too into your scalp...apply a masque if needed on dry hair once a week and sleep in it if your hair is really bad...it makes me wonder sometimes when people dont keep good hair hygiene whats going on in the places we cant see??...ok you dont have to wash and style your hair just to come to the salon ..but we like to see that you are looking after your hair at home too....i wash my head twice a day and as you can see i dont even have hair!!.....
The delicate problem of tongue cancer... ORAL cancer cases have risen above 6,000 a year for the first time, figures have revealed. Cancer Research UK has attributed the increase to rising rates of the human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, especially through high-risk strains of the sexually-transmitted virus. Two-thirds of the 6,200 cases diagnosed in the UK last year were men, and experts say men are more likely than women to smoke and drink heavily. Both are considered to be significant risk factors in oral cancer, but the increase may also be because of the rising rates of the HPV infection. Up to eight in 10 Britons will contract HPV at some point, but the virus is usually harmless. Just a few strains
“This raises questions as to exactly how these cancers develop, and why they only affect a small proportion of people who are exposed.” Sara Hiom, director of information at Cancer Research UK, said: “It’s worrying to see such a big rise in oral cancer rates. But like many other cancers, if it is caught early, there is a better chance of successful treatment. “So it’s really important for people to know the signs and symptoms of oral cancer - mainly mouth ulcers that just won’t heal, any lumps or thickening in the mouth, lips or throat, or red or white patches in the mouth that won’t go away.” She added: “If you are worried about any of these symptoms, see your doctor or dentists, who both have a vital role to play.”
Measles jabs are being urged for US visitors to the London Games
AMERICA could be at risk of a measles epidemic, spread by tourists returning home from the London Olympics. The official warning was issued by the US Centre for Disease Control, which is stressing that Americans planning to visit London for the summer Games to get vaccinated. Travellers to Ukraine and Poland for the Euro 2012 football tournament in June could also put the US at risk of a measles outbreak.
Page 40
create problems, and one in particular, HPV-16, is known to cause cell changes which could develop into cancer. There have been particularly sharp rises in rates of cancers at the base of the tongue (an almost 90% increase) and the tonsils (around a 70% increase), and these are two areas of the mouth where cancers are more commonly HPV-related. Richard Shaw, a Cancer Research UK expert in head and neck cancers, based at the Liverpool Cancer Research UK Centre, said: “We have seen a rapid increase in the number cases. “We have also noticed that patients with HPV-related oral cancers tend to be younger, are less likely to be smokers and have better outcomes from treatment than those whose tumours show no evidence of HPV.
The CDC claims that measles is common in Europe, and Rebecca Martin, director the organisation’s Global Immunisation Division, says: ”Disease knows no borders, and Ukraine is experiencing a large outbreak right now. “We are concerned about Americans coming back from the Olympics this summer and, unknowingly, infecting others.” There were eight deaths and around 26,000 cases of measles across Europe last year, including 1,086 in England and Wales. That compares with an annual tally of 214 US cases in
2011, including three infants too young to be vaccinated. They caught the disease in a California doctor’s waiting room from a seven-year-old, who had visited Switzerland. In recent years, America has experienced just 50 cases annually, with visitors to Europe being blamed for the increase. Each case of measles costs £101,000 to treat in the US healthcare system, and around one in three of those infected with the disease will require hospital treatment. Before vaccination was routine, the virus killed 3,0005,000 Americans a year.

Slim the telly tubbies MILLIONS of children are considered obese in the UK and the United States, and though their respective governments are devising programmes to stop this trend, experts stress that prevention starts at home. And the stakes are high: The National Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention in the US says these children are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnoea and poor self-esteem. Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder, characterised by abnormal pauses in breathing, or abnormally low breathing. And, says an NCCDP spokeswoman: “Parents and teachers need to empower children so that they can make healthy food choices. “Children are bombarded
by TV ads for unhealthy foods at a very early age, so it’s important that trusted adults provide them with enough information to make positive choices.” The first step to a healthy home is to simplify your grocery list. Mary Jones Verbovski, a paediatric dietitian at Seattle Children’s Hospital, insists you must avoid foods that include hydrogenated oils (saturated fat) and high fructose syrup. “Aim for fewer things that are hard to pronounce in the ingredient list,” she adds. “The
more preserved and shelffriendly an item is, the more likely it is higher in sodium, fat and sugar, which are all bad news for a healthy diet.” Verbovski recommends fresh dairy, meats and produce - and the brighter, the better! “Go for naturallycolourful foods,” she said. “More nutrients, vitamins and minerals are naturally present there, and kids generally enjoy brightly-coloured food.” Healthy eating starts at local grocers and farmers markets, says Matt Mallard, a personal trainer. “If your food can sit on a grocery store shelf unrefrigerated, it doesn’t belong in your body.” Making healthy meals is one thing, but how can you take control of your children’s snacks? For many people, it is so much easier to give kids pre-packaged food, which they can scoff in front of the telly. Yet making healthy snacks available is just as simple. Cooking is a great time
to educate kids about the value of preparing your own meals. Parents can become role models for their children by enjoying the process of cooking themselves and translating that to their kids. “Invite your kids into the kitchen to help you with the simpler tasks,” advises Verbovski. “Let them choose the vegetables, stir the ingredients and read the recipe because, if they help with cooking and food preparation, you will get to understand what they like and what they may be willing to try.” The key to educating youngsters is to treat it like a game, while encouraging good discipline and moderation. “Find a way to make exercise and fitness fun and playful, rather than a chore,” says Verbovski. “Aim to include all foods in moderation. But don’t make certain foods absolute nonos, and find a way to fit in occasional treats.”
At last, a pill to relieve the pain of MS victims AT least 3,000 people in the UK with multiple sclerosis (MS) could benefit from the world’s first pill to help treat the condition. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has issued new draft guidance recommending fingolimod (brand name Gilenya) on the NHS for some patients with a form of MS. The pill can help reduce the number of relapses in adults with highly-active relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), which is characterised by periods when symptoms worsen and then improve. This guidance, relates to people who have experienced an unchanged or increased relapse rate, or ongoing severe relapses, compared with the previous year, even though they have been taking other drugs such as beta interferons. The MS Society estimates some 3,000 patients in the UK could benefit.
Nice’s new guidance reverses a previous version issued in December and follows extra information provided by doctors and the drug manufacturer, Novartis, agreeing to a discount scheme. Professor Carole Longson, director of the health technology evaluation centre at Nice, said: “The latest draft guidance from our committee recommends the NHS use of fingolimod for a specific group of adults.
23 March - 29 March 2012
“Analyses show that for these people, treatment with fingolimod will be a costeffective option for the NHS if Novartis provides the drug at a discounted price.” In MS, white blood cells attack the coating of the nerve cells, which help messages from the brain travel to the rest of the body. As these cells are damaged, people experience symptoms such as numbness and tingling, blurred vision, mobility and balance
problems, and muscle weakness and tightness. Fingolimod works by preventing the white blood cells from attacking nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The drug costs almost £20,000 per patient per year, without the discount scheme. Nick Rijke, director of policy and research at the MS Society, said: “We are delighted. Gilenya has been found to be highly-effective in trials.”

Blow to Brits builder’s brew Once a cup of builder’s tea was enough to drown the nation’s sorrows, but new Mintel research finds Brits are increasingly turning to alternative varieties, as sales of green tea bags have shot up an impressive 83% in past two years alone. Indeed, the strain is showing for good oldfashioned English Breakfast tea. Although accounting for the biggest share of the tea market (70%), sales of ordinary English Breakfast tea bags dropped by 1.5% from £470 million to £463 million between 2010
Page 42
and 2011. Since 2009, the share of ordinary bags as a percentage of all in home tea sales has declined from 73% in 2009 to 70% in 2011. What is more, the number of Brits using English Breakfast tea in the past 12 months has fallen from 87% in 2010 to 83% in 2011. Meanwhile, other more exotic varieties have shown more positive performances, indeed, between 2009 and 2011, sales of “Fruit and Herbal bags” (valued at £54 million in 2011) increased 10%, while “Speciality bags” (£52 million) and “Decaffeinated bags” (£36
million) grew by 8% and 16% respectively. But it was the “Green bags” sector which was the real star performer of the home tea sector. Sales of Green bags grew a sensational 83% between 2009 and 2011, the market almost doubling from £12 million in 2009 to £22 million in 2011. Today, as many as 12% of Brits drink Green tea on a weekly basis. Alex Beckett, Senior Food Analyst said: “While English Breakfast tea is fondly regarded, the expansion of coffee chains and the exotic flavours of fruit, herbal and green teas are encouraging
consumers to diversify their consumption habits, prompting fewer cups of standard tea to be drunk.” With a strong possibility that the economy will head back into a recession, the outlook for consumer confidence in the UK is bleak. However, as a household staple rather than a luxury item, tea sales are unlikely to be strongly adversely affected. The overall tea market is forecast to grow by 8% to £708 million between 2011 and 2016, as global wholesale tea prices rebound, forcing manufacturers to pass on the costs.
Chefs will be be shown slice of life at Embrujo THE popular Embrujo restaurant in Americas Plaza, central Las Americas, is hosting a special lunchtime event tomorrow (Saturday). Restaurant managers and chefs are invited to attend a professional ham-cutting course, under the watchful eye of Alonso Sanchez. He is a member of the National Association of Ham Cutters and is endorsed by the Food Quality Seal of Extremadura. The course is interactive, and is also the first of a range of speciality events to be held this summer at Embrujo. Restaurant manager Dan Arrowsmith said: “It is something a little different, and it’s going to be a lot of fun. Anyone who has seen Serrano ham being cut professionally cut will know how hard it is to do correctly. “These sort of things look easy but, believe me, they are not. Alonso is the best of the
best and he will be passing on his experience. It will be very educational – and, of course, we are not at school, so it will be enjoyable as well! Dan added: “We have a few such courses and events planned over the next few months. It’s something that will help those in the industry, and it’s also a chance for a bit of networking.” Places are limited and can be booked by calling 676 868 729 or 922 759 518. The price is just 15 euros, which includes the full course, plus lunch and drinks.

Holiday rep dies in skiing tragedy A YOUNG British man has been killed after colliding with a snow cannon in the French Alps. The 22-year-old, who has not been named, died on Tuesday at the French resort of Val d’Isere. He was a resort representative for the TUI Ski company and had been out skiing with several friends. He is thought to have been skiing off piste when he hit the snow cannon, which is used to produce artificial
snow to improve piste snow cover and extend the skiing season. TUI said his friends immediately got medical help but after unsuccessful attempts to revive him, he was declared dead at the scene. No one else was involved in the accident. A statement from TUI said: “The next of kin have been informed and TUI Ski are helping to make arrangements for the family to fly out to France. “Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.”
World opens up to old-timers, and it’s thanks to the kids!
TRAVELLING the world is no longer the preserve of school-leavers and college students. That’s because the over50s are following in their footsteps after hearing the young globe-trotters raving on about their holidays. Favourites such as Thailand, Australia, Canada and other far-flung places are now attracting a growing number of older visitors. About 10% in the over-50s sector have now been on holiday to a country they hadn’t previously considered visiting after their children returned home full of the joys. A study, commissioned by Thomas Cook found that more than half of them plan to travel the world once they retire. And while 44% of them are jealous of the journeys undertaken by youngsters now, almost 40% are spending their autumn years visiting places they had never dreamed of going to when they were young. The study of 5,000 people, including almost 1,000 over-50s, discovered that 40% of older holidaymakers really fancy an adventurefilled break, enjoying every excursion and activity they can cram in. Almost 10% even admitted

to booking a holiday to a particular destination in the hope of appearing younger or more adventurous than they really are. A Thomas Cook spokesman said: “Getting older no longer means relaxing and taking it easy, because older generation appears to be more adventurous than ever. “Parents and grandparents are now listening to experiences of their children or grandchildren after they’ve returning from their holidays, and they dream of doing the same thing. “But rather than sitting back and soaking up the stories through their young relatives, they are now booking similar trips themselves so they can recall their own adventurous tales.” He added: “We’ve seen a rise in the number of over50s booking trips to far away destinations, once their children have left home, and an increase in long-duration holidays, with some booking packages up to 42 nights.” Leading over-50s destinations Australia Canada New Zealand US Caribbean Italy Seychelles Ireland Florida Maldives
A TRAVEL report by Visa Europe has revealed that despite the economic crisis, British holidaymakers spent a record £12.4 billion on their foreign holidays in 2011 – an annual increase of 2%. This trend for increased spending is set to continue as UK holidaymakers plan to spend even more on foreign getaways this year, with many planning their foreign breaks around the once-in-a-lifetime celebrations set to hit the UK this summer. The report reveals that Spain remains the most popular getaway for British holidaymakers, with £1.8 RYANAIR, never short of controversy in their pursuit of extra takings, are in hot water again after refusing to allow passengers to use seats by the emergency exit unless they coughed up an extra £10. They would be popular because of the extra legroom, but actually remain empty for the most part because of the additional charge. Now, the Irish budget airline are under investigation by the country’s own Aviation Authority because they still expect travellers in surrounding rows to know how to open the doors in an emergency. The Airline Pilots’ Association is also concerned about safety implications, while UK regulator the Civil Aviation Authority says the issue is a “grey area” and
billion spent in the destination in 2011. France (£1.5 billion), USA (£1 billion), Italy (£560 million) and Australia (£517 million) complete the five most popular holiday destinations based on UK expenditure. While away, relaxing and unwinding is a crucial part of the holiday for UK holidaymakers, with nearly £900 million spent on enjoying the local entertainment and a further £70m spent on food and drink in destination. For 2012 however, Britons are keen to maximise the incredible celebrations set to take place in the UK over the peak summer season alongside their foreign getaways. Thirty percent of people are planning to ‘bookend’ their British summer with foreign breaks
- heading away in either June or September to ensure they can enjoy the best of the UK wide celebrations alongside their cherished foreign holiday. Events outside the UK are also having an effect on holidaymakers’ choice of destination; most notably the current financial difficulties in the Eurozone. While the majority of Britons (53%) still plan to head to Europe on holiday, over a fifth (22%) agree their destination decisions will be influenced by the crisis. However, these factors affecting when and where UK holidaymakers are looking to travel won’t dampen Briton’s spending patterns. In fact, UK holidaymakers are planning to spend an average of £3,890 on their overseas breaks in 2012, an increase of
more than £300 from 2011. Accommodation is set to be the largest expense (£318), followed by travel to and from destination (£302), while the largest proportion of holiday spend in destination will be formed of eating out and spending in bars (£289). Tony Gibbons, Head of Debit at Visa Europe, said: “Despite another tumultuous year dominated by global economic and political events, UK holiday spending has continued to rise to record breaking levels. With this trend looking set to continue into 2012, it demonstrates that time away is still very much a priority and that Visa cards remain central to holiday packing lists.” More information www. visaeurope.com
Under-fire Ryanair charge to bag the roomy exit seats suggests a review of Ryanair policy. One Ryanair passenger has spoken of how this can lead to passengers being expected to operate doors which, in some cases, they cannot even see. The passenger, on a flight from Bratislava to Stansted Airport, told the Daily Mail: “I wasn’t allowed to sit in the emergency exit row, so I sat in the window seat in the row in front. “Before take-off, one of the cabin crew spoke to me and another passenger who was in the aisle seat. “Basically, she was saying that, since we were the closest to the emergency exit, we’d
have to make sure we read and understood the instructions for opening the doors in the middle of the plane in an emergency. “I said I couldn’t even see the door because it was directly behind my back. It seemed ludicrous and meanspirited.” He added: “Obviously, they’d rather punish passengers for not paying extra than ensure there’s someone to man the emergency exit. But surely, that’s a safety issue.” Stephen McNamara, Ryanair’s head of communications, said: “We do not believe this to be an issue because all passengers are furnished with
the same evacuation information.” Ryanair have often courted controversy before because of their money-making tactics, and they seem to want to charge passengers for as many extras as possible. They abolished airport checkins, requiring passengers to check-in online, with failure to do so incurring a £60 fee per passenger. The company then got rid of this free online check-in, charging passengers £6 a head to print their own boarding cards. Consumer magazine Holiday Which? Names Ryanair as the worst offender for charging optional extras.

Peugeot on target again SMALL Peugeots have always been close to the hearts of UK buyers, and especially when it comes to their 205, 206 and 207 models, which have sold in their thousands. That’s mainly through a combination of good looks, lively road manners and great value for money, but these machines have never felt very upmarket. This is where the new 208 should score. Peugeot, having learned lessons from the larger 508, intend it to be much more grown-up, with a cabin that promises to rival premium-badged cars like the Audi A1. Despite their rich history in the small-car market, the 208 is the company’s most radical reinvention of their superminis. This new machine is smaller, lighter, cleaner and more stylish than the 207, bringing improvements in every possible way. And it looks as though the French firm have created another pretty
supermini, influenced to a degree by the SR1 concept car displayed at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show especially in the front grille, headlights (with LED running lights) and the bold line on the doors. Everything about the new car, from its exterior styling through to the small steering wheel, is in keeping with what
a supermini should be. It’s a tidy little package, which can cope with the functional needs of family life, yet it does so with fun and flair. And though the 208 is slightly smaller than the 207, it has the same wheelbase and redesigned seats, is a bit more spacious, with a larger boot. The interior is superb.
With a tactile mix of metal, leather and piano black plastics, it really has a classy look, which overshadows a Ford Fiesta, and bears comparison with the Audi A1 and VW Polo. There’s also dual-zone air-con, a USB port for MP3 players, cruise control and a seven-inch touch-screen display, which incorporates Bluetooth and a series
No more Mr Big from ‘faithful’ Fiat? FIAT’S 500L miniMPV finally made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show last week, but it could herald the end of the road for the company’s bigger cars. The newcomer was the centre of attention on Fiat’s stand as more details were revealed on their car, which looks set to take on the likes of the MINI Countryman. This five-seater is longer, wider and taller than the standard 500 hatch, and, they claim, the 400-litre boot can carry five suitcases or a full-size pushchair. Despite the increased practicality, the mini-MPV is still clearly a member of the growing 500 family,
23 March - 29 March 2012
with its recognisable nose, large lights flanked by lower spotlights and a simple upper-bar grille. A new, more power-
ful 105bhp version of the 500’s two-cylinder TwinAir engine will be offered, alongside a 1.4-litre turbo petrol and a 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel. The TwinAir
will be the lowest-emitting MPV on sale. Fiat are also promising a driving experience more in line with a small SUV than an MPV as they set their sights on stealing Countryman sales when the car arrives in the UK in a year. But as the latest member of the 500 “brand within a brand” was unveiled, Fiat group chief Sergio Marchionne was blunt about the prospects of any more larger Fiats arriving. “It could well be that Fiat never does a D-segment car again,” he admitted. “The recently-axed Croma was a great car that could not get traction in the market. “I need to be careful not to push Fiat into territory they can’t manage. I have Alfa, Chrysler and Jeep who can all play there. We need to be faithful to Fiat’s DNA and its potential.”
of bespoke apps. The expansive range includes a 92bhp 1.6-litre e-HDi diesel and the top-spec 155bhp 1.6 turbo petrol. But the 120bhp normallyaspirated, 1.6-litre petrol, hooked up to a fivespeed manual gearbox, is expected to be the most popular. With a claimed 0-62mph time of just under 10 seconds, the engine has enough power for most buyers, and there’s good news when it comes to fuel economy, with Peugeot claiming almost 50mpg despite the lack of a stop-start system. Although CO2 emissions of 134g/km are nothing special these days, they are a match for
the similarly-priced and justas-powerful Ford Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S. Peugeot installed the smaller steering wheel to give it a sporty feel, they say, and it certainly looks the business. In fact, the entire 208 package adds up to a superb looker and, with that fantastic cabin, represents great value for money, from around 11,650 euros (£10,000) for the basic model, up to 26,000 euros (£21,631) for top-ofthe-range. From launch, expected to be 30th June, it will be offered as a three and five-door, and this stand-out model should continue British buyers’ love affair with Peugeot.

Match Report By Geoff Huxtable WELL done to Yelas Bar for securing the necessary points to retain their top-flight place with a win against Bar 180 B. Yelas’s man-of-themoment, Neil, followed his maximum last week with yet another in his team’s 5-3 home victory! This means that despite Target Titans’ win at Valle Vikings 1 and Taverns draw at Ensecan, they are both relegated. In a cracking match at the gym, Mitch hit his ninth 180 for Xtreme, and Del Boy checked out on 132 for Phoenix. But a few missed BARRACUDA Bandits will be playing top-flight pool next season, having wrapped up promotion from Division Two with five matches still to play. The Division leaders’ victory at Tenerife Pool Tables was enough to sent them up, and they will now hope to wrap up the title in the next few matches. There is a real bun fight behind to join them in Division One. With the top two
doubles cost the visitors dearly and the iron pumpers came through with a 6-2 victory. Toscales Tornados, with only four players, dented Cozy Wanderers’ third-place hopes by holding them to a draw, while La Central ended their season with a defeat at Target Army. Sundowners’ 6-2 success over Barracuda Hunters means they will be crowned champions of Division 2 by earning at least a point in their last fixture. Ourplace Naturals took a nervy trebles leg for their win over Scruffy Macs, and Rood B secured a draw at Palms, courtesy of a last-leg success.

GREAVSIE was right. Football is a funny old game. Tenerife collected three points from their two matches this week. Morale is at a season low, but it could so easily have been at a high. I will explain. Last Sunday, Tenerife strolled to victory over Rayo Vallecano B with a confident display. As always, they left it late before putting the game to bed, but it was another away win and clean sheet. Coupled with Real Madrid Castilla being held to a draw, it was a superb afternoon. But here we are just a few days later and it seems the roof has caved in. Wednesday night’s stunning loss against Reyes ended Andres Garcia Tebar’s honeymoon period. This was the worst home display in five seasons, and there have been a few in that time. Reyes were comfortably the worst side to set foot on the Heliodoro turf in years, yet by the time the ref blew up, Tenerife had made them look competent. How? I still don’t know. These were not the same set of players who put Castilla in their place a few weeks back. Or the side who left Madrid with three points on Sunday. And it had started so brightly. Tenerife carved out five or six really good chances inside the first 15 minutes - and a rout looked on the cards. Tellingly, they never tested the keeper Angel, who would have an easy night. It was so easy for the hosts. In fact, I probably jinxed it by trying to find out what price Tenerife were with Bet365 in running. And then, of course, the obvious happened. Reyes cleared a corner and lumped it forward. Portilla chased more in hope than expectation when suddenly, the clown show started.
Llorente, Marcos and Aragoneses all left the ball to each other, then collided and gave Portilla the sort of tap-in even Fernando Torres would knock in the net. I had to rub my eyes to check I had seen correctly. Even the scoreboard had a strange look to it: 22 minutes gone and Tenerife were losing? Onwards and upwards was the cry as Tenerife went in search of an equaliser. Which would never come. They would have the lions’ share of possession, but Angel wouldn’t have a save to make. Even at half-time, the expected cavalry charge never materialised. There was a spell midway through the second half in which Tenerife looked to find another gear. Chechu was looking lively down the right and, with Perona supporting Aridane, it seemed a goal was on its way. It was. At the other end! And again, it came on the counter. Tenerife over-committed to an attack and another thump forward caught Medina square. It was now a foot race between Tarantino and Por-

tilla. The Reyes striker won, turned inside the defender and calmly slotted it past Aragoneses. Game over. There was still 20 minutes to play, but the fight had gone from the hosts and, from my seat in the stand, so had most of the near-10,000 fans. At the end, Aragoneses produced a superb save to deny Portilla the hat-trick his effort deserved. As I said at the top, it’s a strange sport. If Tenerife had lost at Rayo and won at home, there would still be a bounce. A confidence. But after Wednesday, there is nothing. Maybe this will be the kick up the backside the team need. Tebar’s tactical naivete is now a worry - as is the lack of fight on display against Castilla. Manchester United shipped six at home against City, and Arsenal conceded eight goals earlier in the season at United, so this is not a cast-iron disaster. But it cannot be repeated and Tenerife are now at a seasonal crossroad. Canarian Weekly ratings

Horoscopes of the week Aries
(March 21st-April 20th) The last few months have proved to be both expensive and exhausting. When, exactly, have you given yourself time to get over this? You haven’t, according to your stars, so please make some time for yourself. After all, if you don’t, then why should anyone else? A colleague or neighbour promises an apology you had almost given up on hearing. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) Some sort of change is apparent in your personal appearance, which may attract more attention from those around you than usual. Your social life appears to brighten considerably in this coming week. If you want a light-hearted romance with no strings attached, you should be lucky. But don’t get too involved or you could end up getting hurt. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) You need to devote a little more time to younger people if you want to understand them better. If you are ambitious, an influential person you come into contact with could help you climb another step up the career ladder. Beware of shady financial deals, and check carefully before you part with any money. CANCER (June 22ndJuly 23rd) Friends appear to be more prominent than usual in your affairs. A heart-to-heart talk with someone should help you solve a personal problem which has been worrying you for some time. Take advantage of any opportunity to get away, because a complete change in surroundings would do you the world of good. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) Some sort of upheaval is likely in a personal relationship, which may be emotionally unsettling. You have the opportunity to broaden your horizons, and you should take full advantage of the situation. Flirtations take a turn seriously in midweek, but you

need to ask yourself if you’re in it for the short or long haul. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) Don’t hesitate too long, or an important opportunity could pass you by. Have a go - you never know where it may lead - and have a bit of confidence in your own abilities. Someone you come into contact with for the first time makes a big impression, and don’t be shy because this could be your first and last chance to get to know the person better. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) Be bold and ask other people for favours as they will be only too willing to help. You will have to juggle with your expenses a bit in order to make ends meet, but the end result is sure to be worth it. Affairs of the heart become more important, and many Librans are about to realise they’re willing to take things to the next level. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) This is an especially good time for those of you who are taking any sort of test or examination because you just know you’ll be on top form. You may discover you have a hidden talent in something you have never tried before, and this is a great time for you to see how much others are willing to help you. So go for it! This really is your time. S AG I T TA R I U S (November 23rdDecember 21st) Tread carefully where family

matters are concerned or you could put your foot in it. An important business matter may not be going quite to your liking and you will have to take some action before Tuesday if you want to gain control again. Links with foreign countries prove exciting, and maybe even life changing.

C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) Don’t let a wellmeaning but naive family member talk you out of what you want to do with your life. Be respectful, but firm and decisive, and before you know it, the sun really will start shining on you and your ambitions. They will be realised over time, as long as you have that burning desire and will to succeed.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) Some sort of improvement is indicated in your surroundings. Try to be tolerant with someone you are not very fond of for the sake of a loved one. Follow your common sense and not your emotions when it comes to business and financial affairs. Energetic activities are highlighted on Wednesday, when you start to see how much opportunity you now have before you. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Your self-discipline appears to be slipping, and I could leave you feeling ashamed of yourself. However, it is not too late to rectify the situation if you make a special effort now. Confide your anxieties in close friend because they may just be able to help. A new acquaintance begins to play a much more important role in your affairs and, perhaps, even your long-term future.
What better way to train your brain. Starting at the left with the number provided, work across each of these lines applying the mathematical instructions to your running total. Don´t reach for the calculator - that´s cheating! Write your final answer in the last box of the line. Aim to complete each round in about 30 seconds. Good Luck!
