Telefónica pays price! TELEFÓNICA, the giant telecommunications company, has had a fine of more than 150 million euros confirmed for charging unfair ADSL prices over a five-year period. The European Commission fine was levied initially in 2007 for what it called “a very serious abuse of its dominant position in the Spanish broadband market”. The Commission said that Telefónica “imposed unfair prices in the form of a ‘margin squeeze’ between the wholesale prices it charged to competitors and the retail prices it charged to its own customers”. In so doing, the Madridbased company weakened its competitors over a fiveyear period, from 2001-2006, making their continued presence and growth difficult. It meant that its rivals were forced to make losses if they wanted to match Telefónica’s retail prices. With high wholesale costs and weakened retail competition on the broadband market, Spanish consumers paid 20% more than the 15 original European Union countries’ (EU-15) average for broadband access. And the Spanish broadband penetration rate was 20% below EU-15 average, with its growth nearly 30% below that of the EU-15. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said at the time: “Spanish consumers are paying far more than the average for high-speed Internet access, and many

Giant communications firm fined 150m euros for charging customers and rivals unfairly have chosen not to pay that price. “The margin squeeze that Telefónica imposed on its competitors not only raised their costs, but also harmed customers significantly. When consumers and businesses are harmed in such a major market, the entire economy suffers.” He added forcefully: “I will not allow dominant companies to set prices that undermine telecoms liberalisation.”

But the enormous fine is merely a drop in the ocean to Telefonica, which made a staggering net profit of 1.733 billion euros for the year ending last September. The company now has two months to launch an appeal to the EU Court of Justice, but Mike Broeckaert, managing director of Adeje firm, Direct Telecom, said: “They can earn that in a day, so it doesn’t really mean anything to them.” Whatever happens, he

does not believe ADSL or telephone costs will suddenly come down overnight - as they did in the UK a few years ago. “We can never really compete with Telefonica because whatever we do, they can spike our guns so easily, and we’re sick of it.” he said. “We could put out a good package at, say, five or 10 euros below them, and they would undercut us immediately because they are so big - and we’re sick of it.”

“It’s an unfair situation, and we have to perform miracles to offer decent prices. But it has never been a price battle for us but a service battle. “So what we concentrate on is providing better services with more benefits for our customers. “For instance, we offer really cheap deals on telephone calls, and free minutes to the UK and Europe on our new dT TOTAL package, which doesn’t bother Telefonica

because much of their business is done in South America.” Most of us are familiar with ADSL, which is the provision of high-speed internet access using a fixed telephone line. It is the main technology used in Spain and, of course, in Tenerife, to provide broadband internet access services. As the only Spanish telecommunications operator which has a nationwide fixed telephone network, Telefónica controls the entire ADSL value chain in Spain. It would be uneconomical to duplicate Telefónica’s local access network, so alternative network operators wishing to provide retail broadband services have no option but to purchase wholesale broadband access products from Telefónica, which is obviously limiting them. The Commission’s investigation was prompted by a complaint lodged by France Telecom España on 11 th July 2003, alleging that Telefónica was engaging in a margin squeeze in the Spanish broadband markets. By coincidence, Telefónica announced on 1st March that it was no longer subsidising the costs of mobile phones in order to attract new clients. Their decision followed those of Vodafone and Yoigo, who had already taken that path. And, thanks to Canalink’s underwater cable and the collaboration of ONO, who are Spain’s leading media and entertainment company in fibre optics more than 300.000 households and businesses in Tenerife can now access high-speed internet navigation (50 and 100 megabytes)

Strike? It’s more like a damp squib THE General Strike, called across Spain and the Canaries by main unions UGT and CCOO, yesterday (Thursday), was somewhat of a damp squib, certainly here in the south of Tenerife. There was little evidence of companies or businesses closing down for the day, although some did for fear of reprisals, and a number of bars and restaurants did join in the protest. What action that did occur was taken against labour reforms affecting the rights of workers. Interestingly, however, the extent of the reform will not be clear until today, when the Spanish budget is revealed. The usual war of figures was underway early in Spain, with the unions on one side and Government sources on the other. Unions were speaking of “massive support”. Ignacio Fernandez Toxo, secretary-general of the CCOO, said: “Successful participation in the strike will be reflected in the massive demonstrations taking place today in dozens of cities.” He added: “We remain open to negotiation. The strike is an opportunity to bargain. But if not, there will be a growing social conflict until the Labour Reform is substantially rectified.” Thousands of police were on duty to protect both the right to strike, and the right to work. But unions criticised their “disproportionate presence”, with one official saying:“It’s like the Normandy landings.” Two pockets of pickets, each numbering about 70 protesters were observed in Las Americas, but that apart, it was a fairly quiet day here. It was actually the sixth 24hour General Strike ever in Spain and it got underway at midnight. By 8am in Spain, there had been 33 arrests, with five police slightly injured. As the afternoon arrived, there were 58 injuries in total, and tension started to increase when pickets arrived at key points. Transport was one of the main areas affected by the strike, and it appeared to be worse on the Mainland,

particularly in Sevilla, Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid, Granada and Zaragoza. Many service providers operated a well-publicised minimum service, and here in Tenerife, AENA told Canarian Weekly that “the Canary Island airports were operating ‘without incident’. The spokesperson added: “The Canarian airports, except La Gomera, had 660 flights scheduled for Thursday which (at the time of speaking), were operating as intended.” That was certainly true of Tenerife South, where hundreds of passengers flooded the airport and queued happily for their journey home. The basura collection services did not operate overnight in many areas, but the rubbish was collected before midnight. The TITSA bus service operated a Sunday service, which at least guaranteed road travel, while in the North, the tram operators also established minimum services, with trams running

at peak hours in the morning and evening. Tourist attractions Loro Parque, in Puerto de la Cruz and Siam Park, at Costa Adeje, opened as normal. But the daily Island and boat excursions did not take place because of concerns about the safety of passengers. But demonstrators in Madrid prevented the main bus service from taking to the streets, and there were clashes with anti-riot police at the scene by some of the 250 protesters. Tragically, a woman taking part in a picket line was stabbed. She was stabbed by the owner of hotelrestaurant in Cantabria while trying to stop other workers from crossing the picket line. The extent of her injury was not revealed. Television channels Telemadrid and Canal Sur were off the air, with banners running across programmes telling viewers the reasons. Pickets cut access to the wholesale food markets Mercavalencia and

Mercamadrid, and one lorry driver said he was in favour of the strike, but had no option but to work. Valencia’s Ford factory at Almussafes saw a total stoppage on the night shift, while there was a standstill at the Renault and SEAT factories in Martorell, Volkswagen in Navarra and Bosch in Madrid. The airbus factory in Toledo was also closed. According to sources, there was a 74% stoppage across the Post Office (Correos), and the strike also affected the judiciary in Spain, with some courts closed. But cases involving violence against women continued, as did others considered to be essential. In Málaga, apart from several arrests, a cruise liner had to be diverted as it proved impossible to berth in the port. And in Murcia, the strikers threw a Molotov cocktail at a police patrol car and a bank branch in the city. Fortunately, the squad car was parked and empty.

FORESTAL PARK, the new adventure centre near La Esperanza, opened last Saturday Saturday (24th March). Easter – the Passion

IF it has slipped your mind next weekend is Easter. And, throughout the island each municipality will be staging its own series of events to mark the occasion, with Good Friday being deemed more of a religious day than that of Christmas! Easter in the UK is celebrated very much in a ‘confectionery’ style, here in Tenerife each community holds religious services and processions, which are well worth a visit if you’ve never been. One of the best is in Adeje. In recent decades the municipality of Adeje has become a must for those wishing to live the ‘Passion of Jesus’. Since 1996, every Good Friday a group of three hundred residents stage a play of great theatrical realism, in which every detail is taken care of to recreate the sacred history, and made easy to understand for all ages. Calle Grande in the heart of the municipality becomes the stage for a few hours with a show that combines popular devotion and artistic admiration. The representation of the Cross is indeed the main star and the centre of attention. Over three hundred amateur actors, mostly living in the area, organize street scenes of the most important final hours of Jesus of Nazareth, including the apostles and the last supper before the crucifixion. The Easter tradition has

Page 4

gained both national and international acclaim so much so that the event is now broadcast live, for all those that wish to see it but can not visit. In addition it becomes a showcase for tourism promotion overseas. This year, TV Canarias will be responsible for televising the Passion to tens of thousands of homes. Adeje is aware of the importance of maintaining and restoring a tradition of social and religious significance at Easter. The municipality say that it helps to unite the society and build bridges of unity and solidarity. Parallel to the growth of the town and the creation of new parishes, acts of Holy Week have been radiating from the Church of St. Ursula, and have enhanced different areas of the municipality. If the representation of the Passion catches people’s attention, even more so do the images of the procession in the town. Adeje has made great artistic steps, among which are The Christ of Humility and Patience, on Holy Wednesday leaving St. Ursula Church in the direction of Los Olivos. This procession, in particular, appears in the Casa Fuerte and has been held since the seventeenth century and with the same route: from the Franciscan convent to Los Olivios. The face of Christ has Indian features, because it was believed that his origin was American. Both old and young have contributed to enhancing Easter week in the municipality of Adeje if you’ve never been I suggest you go, a brilliant display of local tradition.

TENERIFE Cabildo chief Ricardo Melchior has finally spoken about the proposed oil exploration off the coast of the Canary Islands. The softly spoken veteran gave a rare radio interview this week and used his wisdom to raise some important points. He has no power over what will eventually happen, but he was eager to point out that there was no need to rush any decision. “It is time for people to tell the truth” he said “Repsol and the Attorney General have spent lots of money investigating and lots of people have been saying things that are not true. We must clearly explain the pros and cons of the recent oil surveys. This has not been explained fully and many things have been invented” In a nudge towards the Spanish Government, Melchior explained that the decision to grant a license to the Spanish owned Repsol, could be a massive mistake: “The Ministry of Industry has to describe fully how and where they will be making the oil forecasts, why is Repsol allowed to explore and not another company? What environmental measures will be taken if a spill occurs, and, above all, what are the benefits to these Islands? Only then can everyone make the right and correct

decision.” There has been strong media ground swell that the Government have not cast the net wide enough when it comes to finding a drilling partner. The new administration was quick to announce a set up with Repsol, some say too quick. There has been an international development this week. Morocco has also been eyeing the Atlantic oil and they are also ready to start exploring oil beds. This has ruffled a few political feathers and while nobody is suggesting that there is any diplomatic tension, Melchior is already advising caution: “The Canary Islands have always been a zone of peace and we are very neutral. Oil is desirable for many interests, which can be very dangerous especially when during the last hundred years wars have occurred as a result of ownership of coal mines, oil wells and natural gas development. We live in relatively peaceful times but even so.” The Moroccan government is believed to want a ‘sit

down’ with Prime Minister Rajoy to discuss a potential agreement on the drilling situation. As it stands Repsol plan to drill 37 miles off the coast of Lanzarote. According to international law a country has legal right to water within 60 miles of its shore, except in certain circumstances. There is no suggestion that this will cause any serious row with Morocco at this time but the two countries do have history. There is still tension between them over ownership of the Gibraltar strait. The sticky subject on who would shoulder the blame from any drilling accident has not gone away this week. There has still been no official word on this from the Government or Reposl, in fact the Canary Islands project does not appear on Repsol’s official website. There have been a few oil incidents recently Melchior says this is still an important hurdle to jump: “I’m not saying that will happen here but we need to know all the facts and have all the information before we move

forward. Who assumes the risk? It’s the Canary Islands so we must clearly explain each and every one of the things that needs to be done and then the Canaries can say if assume they want that risk or not and if you assume the risk then you get all the benefits.” Again Melchior is quietly reminding the main Government of their responsibility. He knows that national laws and indeed European Law trumps any local decree and there is a possibility that all financial benefit will go to central government. The oil story has a long way to run. Internal fighting and legal challenges could push exploration back years. That’s before any subsequent ownership battles, contract bidding and probably more legal wrangles. It would be highly ambitious to even predict that a barrel of Canarian oil would be on the open market in fifteen years let alone ten. And Melchior is also aware of the feeling of those in the Canaries particularly the Eastern Islands. He saw first hand what happened last week. “It should be pointed out that there are strong feelings on both sides. I was there when the demonstrations that took place last weekend in Fuerteventura and there were hoteliers, the tourist sector, the public and there was also a member of the Local government protesting against this. In my eyes it was more than 20,000 people protesting, and that’s a lot.”

Tenerife’s Titans hits the world stage ALMOST a year to the day since filming began in Tenerife, ‘Wrath of the Titans’ will hit the worlds cinema screens this week. It’s the sequel to ‘Clash of the Titans’ which was also filmed in the Canary Islands. Most of the cast are reprising their roles from the first film and the early reviews are positive. ‘Clash’ was given a general thumbs down from movie critics but it was a commercial success. The film cost $125,000,000 but it yielded nearly half a billion at the box office. This gave the films maker Warner Brothers the chance to make a sequel and a third film to complete the trilogy has already been given the go ahead. Dan Mazeau and David Johnson who wrote ‘Wrath’ have been commissioned to write the next movie script. ‘Wrath’

stars Sam Worthington and picks up the story ten years after his character Perseus defeated the monster Kraken in the first instalment. Perseus is living a quiet life raising his young son, oblivious to the ongoing battle between the Gods and the Titans. His father and ruling God Zeus is captured and this leads to Perseus and his merry men battling through a plethora of challenges to free him and save the world. Hollywood big hitters Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson are joined by Bill Nighy while former Bond girl Rosamund Pike provides the glamour. Sam Worthington has high hopes for the film: “I think it’s fair to say we could

have done a bit better with Clash. I know I could have. But I’ve learned from that and we have taken everything forward. Perseus is a little older, the hair is a little longer and he is a little wiser, which is a bit like me!” A large part of the film was filmed in the Teide National Park and it’s understood that Warner Brothers will return here to shoot the next film in the franchise. It was hoped that the films success would lead to a massive tourism boost, in a similar way to that enjoyed by New Zealand after Lord of the Rings. But this didn’t really happen despite the stunning scenes of Tenerife in the movie.

No budget joy from Rajoy

MARIANO Rajoy will unveil his first budget as Spanish Prime Minister today (Friday) and he is set to implement massive public spending cuts. The unpopular move is being forced on him as Spain battles to avoid a financial bailout. Rajoy’s People’s Party swept to power in November on a ‘need for change’ ticket, but reality has already hit home. Rajoy will bring in sweeping public cuts and higher taxation as Spain looks to cut the current GDP deficit

30 March - 05 April 2012

of 8.5%. He promised finance ministers in Brussels to get the figure down to 5.5% by the end of the year. But it will take huge taxation to achieve this. He unveiled a massive 15 billion euro austerity package in January and this unpopular move will be a splash in the ocean compared to what he will reveal in the budget. Unemployment is current just over the five million mark, thats nearly 24% but the major worry is in the next generation of workers. Unemployment for the under 25s is at an amazing 50% and Rajoy will need to pull a rabbit from the hat if

he is to reduce that figure in the next two years. Recently revealed changes to the employment statute have gone down like a lead balloon with workers and unions yet, he needs to be strong and push them through. The budget will also see a British style raising of taxation on every day items such as fuel, fags and booze. Although it’s unlikely that Rajoy will stick tax on pasties! The markets have been preparing for tough times in recent days. The Spanish stock exchange the IBEX has been down 3% this week while the value of Spanish bonds has also gone south.

Solar-powered panels in schools THE MUNICIPALITY of Granadilla, through the Department of the Environment, led by Jacob Donate Gonzalez has asked the Ministry of Education to commission the project ‘Sustainable Granadilla’, which includes a series of actions aimed at promoting education and sustainable development. The objective of this programme is the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on the roofs of primary and secondary schools of the municipality, Thus, says

the councillor, through this initiative more than 7,000 students enrolled will benefit directly, something that has

already been done in other regions as a pilot, and has proved a success. Jacob Donate Gonzalez

noted that the solar surface of the schools is over 10,000 square meters. This project aims to achieve economic savings for the area, being able to use this energy as a source of income, which subsequently impacts on services and investment for the school itself or by the renovation and refurbishment or acquisition of school supplies. Jacob Donate Gonzalez said, “we aim to develop a comprehensive training plan and environmental education highlighting the creation of a training portal in particular renewables, where teachers and students have access to information on renewable energy and a plan monitoring energy generated by the panels and the savings in CO2 emissions.” The objective of this plan, he

adds, “is not only to promote economic savings but also to promote awareness among the educational community so that they can have their own installation of solar energy. We hope that this training becomes part of their education and that in the future the application is a common practice. “ He indicates that it has submitted the plan to all schools, receiving much support for it. Finally, he notes that “we are aware that through the training we will achieve a more sustainable territory. We are already working on other plans such as a solar farm and community centres as well as the ability to modify the street lighting through the use of network technology, which would be a big savings “says the Councillor.

pilots plan Welcome to Tenerife’s Iberia summer strikes Animal Welfare Room AKTIONTIER, the huge German charity which sponsors the Accion del Sol dog sanctuary, is opening Tenerife’s first ‘Animal Welfare Room’ this morning (Friday) at 10am. The pilot project will take place at the CEIP primary school in Parque de la Reina, where –youngsters will be taught by their teachers about animal welfare. For example, they will learn about how some wild animals are in danger, how rubbish can be a danger to them - how to protect our environment, etc. The room has been specially decorated and filled with information, such as books, games and technical equipment. A comfortable carpet is provided so children are able to sit down on the floor, work and watch and also respect the area they are working in by keeping it clean. The equipment is sponsored by Aktiontier, so the charity can be sure the animal welfare classes will be held several times a year. There are so many subjects on animal welfare to talk about, and children will be able to learn “what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong”, says an Aktiontier spokesperson. Arona’s Health Councillor and its Councillor for Health and Education will be

attending today’s official opening, and Aktiontier’s hope is that more and more people get to know and appreciate the correct way to treat animals. Remember, animals are not only for companionship and our personal guards, but they are also our friends On a similar subject, a new language is always hard to pick up, and studying textbooks, together with the use of correct grammar, can often be difficult, as well as boring. So Marion Gonzalz, who runs Accion del Sol, together with her good friend from the language school in Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, have come up with a fun way to learn, while raising awareness of the dogs’ plight here in Tenerife. Most of the students involved are adults who work in the hotel industry, and they

all need to speak German for their work. However, instead of a classroom, they meet regularly at the Accion refuge in Granadilla, There, they are able to make progress with their new language, as well as learning about animal welfare at the same time. Many of the dogs love joining in (not the language lessons, of course!) and enjoy all the extra attention. This collaboration between animals and humans is very important for the future of animal welfare. Many of the students are now walking the dogs they have bonded with in their free time, which is a real bonus for some of the many dogs in Accion’s care. These lucky dogs pictured are definitely stars in the making, and the Atlantic Whale Foundation (AWF), based in Tenerife, has been asked to make a film with the

dogs at Accion del Sol. All will soon be revealed. Accion’s next fund-raiser, on 8th April from 11am, will include fun runs with your dogs, an Easter-Egg Run and Hunt for the children, together with fun and games for all the family and your four legged friends. Please call the refuge on 922 778 630 between 9am1pm or 3-6pm for more info. There are many gorgeous dogs at the Granadilla refuge in need of a home, so please pop along if you are considering adopting a fourlegged friend. If you have any spare time, please lend a hand at this magnificent centre, where you can take a dog for walkies, play with the puppies or just pay a visit. Accion del Sol is open Monday-Friday from 3-6pm, and you can call the number above for more information.

IN THE wake of the strike this week Iberia pilots have announced yet another series of strikes every Monday and Friday from April 9th to July 20th inclusive - in protest at the lack of agreement reached with the airline following mediation proposed by the former employment minister, Manuel Pimentel. An additional 30 one-day strikes have been planned; pilots have already held action on 12 occasions since December. It’s estimated to have cost the airline 36 million euros to date. The latest round of one-day strikes will begin on Easter Monday, so Holy Week will not be affected, and will end when summer holidays are in full flow. It will also affect the long bank holiday weekend in May.

The pilots’ union, Sepla, said the strikes are in protest at the airline’s boycotting of the mediation process, which, in their opinion has prevented any agreement being reached despite the “considerable” concessions offered by the union. The conflict between Iberia pilots and their airline bosses began with the announcement of the launch of a new low-cost subsidiary, Iberia Express, which commenced this week. The union believes it violates pilots’ rights. Another bone of contention is that British Airways, now merged with Iberia, are operating without restrictions from Barajas airport in Madrid, a situation they say has led to a decrease in work for Iberia. Both parties have been asked to restart negotiations.

Tourism goes into the classroom THE CITY of Granadilla de Abona, through the Department of Tourism and with the collaboration of the Department of Education has launched the project ‘Education in Tourism’ in order to enhance classroom knowledge of local heritage and offer young locals an alternative for their future careers. The aim is to bring local heritage a little closer to people and promote alternative future employment amongst the young. Councillor for Tourism, Nuria Delgado Hernandez, explained that because of this initiative, which is scheduled to take place between late April and early May, meetings have already

30 March - 05 April 2012

been held in secondary education institutes (IES) of El Médano and Granadilla, which she attended along with Councillor of Education, Sara Cano, in order to inform the students and the teaching community of the initiative.

The Councillor pointed out that through this programme it is the students themselves who are responsible for developing, in English and Spanish, routes on the road map and points of interest to visit in the local area. She

added that the students of the IES of Granadilla will serve as a guide to the institute of El Médano, and students on the coast, will, in turn, guide the youths from the town. Municipal officials have expressed their acceptance of the project and the interest shown by students on issues such as tourism and education. According to Nuria Delgado Rodriguez, this is the first phase to be developed in schools, though the idea is to keep working and ensure continuity of this initiative in other institutes, which will not only add value to our natural and historic heritage among young people but also educate and provide the possibility of identifying an outlet for their future careers.

Campaign to save our Crow THE Canary Crow, once flourishing on La Gomera in particular, is in danger of extinction from a double whammy. Uncontrolled rubbish dumps have now been closed, and the crow is a well-known scavenger, feeding mainly on waste and carrion (the remains of dead animals and birds). The other reason, and perhaps the most serious, is the widespread and indiscriminate use of poisons in the field, especially rodenticides. Ecologist Jonay Izquierdo

July, and tickets are sure to be in big demand. Azpilicueta is renowned in the industry as a producer-cum-writer and theatre director, with a wealth of experience. In the last 10 years, he has been involved in successful musical productions of Mamma Mia, Chicago, Les Miserables and The Lion King. The play revolves around a bet that Professor Higgins wages with his friend, Colonel Pickering. The prof’s challenge is to convert Eliza Doolittle, an uneducated and ill-spoken florist he met at Covent Garden, into a proper lady. My Fair Lady opened on Broadway in 1956 with Julie Andrews and Rex Harrison in the key roles. Six years later, it was converted to the big screen with Audrey Hepburn (replacing Andrews) and Harrison headlining the cast of a film which won eight Oscars. When the legendary show was staged in Spain for the first time - in Madrid in October 2001 - it was seen by more than 700,000 people in just two years, which was a record at the time.

Canarian workers even more prone to accidents SERIOUS occupational accidents increased by almost 3% in the Canaries last year, even though the construction industry, notorious for many cases in the past, is virtually non-existent now. The National Observatory of Working Conditions records

that there were 183 serious accidents in the archipelago last year - an increase of 2.8% - and a total of 24,120 minor incidents, which was 4.2% fewer than in 2010. These figures include 15 workers who died accidently, against 17 the previous year.

Electricity-price hike in Tenerife THE price of electricity on the Island will be increased by 5-7% from Sunday, but it could have been a lot more! José Manuel Soria, Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism, emphasised that the Spanish Government had no choice but to increase the cost. That was down to the Supreme Court, which determined that the allowable annual deficit in power-supply pricing had been reached. The Minister also stressed that consumers would not bear the whole brunt of the increases, with public

coffers and electricity supply companies also paying their share. “Otherwise, electricity prices would have to go up by 40%, and the country is not in a position to stand an increase like that,” he said. Soria also said that next Friday’s Council of Ministers meeting will deal with firm proposals to reduce the tariff deficit, because revenue does not even cover the costs of running the power-supply system.

Theatre Bar does it again… THE Theatre Bar in San Eugenio was the setting for Heat 7 of the 2012 Tenerife Loves Karaoke last Friday, and it produced the same reaction as we have seen throughout this current competition. Again, we saw a brilliant and fun night, with residents and tourists keen to show off their vocal talents in this popular contest, organised by Oasis Fm, which is proving to be a phenomenal success here in the south of the Island. The judges were again confronted by some difficult decisions, such was the quality of the contestants, but finally settled on three - yes THREE female finalists which meant we were at last guaranteed a female in the grand final. It’s quite strange because in the 2011 Tenerife Loves Karaoke competition, prior to the Theatre Bar stage, all heats had been won by females. They then produced the first

male finalist and this year again, they have stemmed the tide. The three females all sang there second song with the

whole place giving everyone great encouragement and applause. However, there does have to be a winner and, after what must be one

of the closest heat finals yet, the winner of heat 7 was announced as Haley Fitzgerald. She will join the other

heat winners so far in the grand final, to be staged at Showtime, Las Americas, on 19th May. All the finalists will battle it

out for the following prizes: *500 euros in cash *Winning song recorded at Villa Studios, complete with pressed CD *Option for a contract with top agent Paul James Associates *Live performance at the 6th Annual Tenerife Entertainment Awards in September * The title of Winner Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2012. Canarian TB figures are lowest in Spain ONE-THIRD of the world population is infected with tuberculosis, and nearly two million of those people die of every year. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are nine million new cases annually, and though Spain has 30 cases per 10,000 inhabitants, the Canaries have the lowest figures in the country, with about 400 cases each year. These worldwide figures are increased by AIDS patients and the existence of a number of foreigners coming from countries with high TB incidence, such as Latin America, Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. The number of tuberculosis cases in all locations reported was 7,089 by 2010, equivalent to an incidence rate of 15.39 cases per 100,000 population. This represents a decrease of the overall rate of 9% compared to 2009, which

Page 10

was 16.96 cases per 100,000 (7,652 cases). Of the total cases reported to the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network in 2010, 4,712 (66.5%) were born in Spain. The Tuberculosis Case Registry of the Canaries notes that the incidence rate has experienced a steady decline there, from 23.50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2000 to 8.46 cases in 2010. Canarian islands most affected are Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, but the introduction of Specific Plans Control and

Prevention of Tuberculosis in both places have seen the rates decrease significantly. There were 70% fewer in Lanzarote between 2006-2010, and 60% in Fuerteventura between 2007-2010. Pulmonary tuberculosis is a disease that spreads from person to person, usually characterised by symptoms of coughing, fever, sickness and loss of appetite. After the problem is diagnosed, a full six months of treatment can produce a 100% cure rate.

Tenerife’s most tragic day TUESDAY marked the 35th anniversary of one of the most tragic aviation accidents in history, which took place here in Tenerife. A collision between two Boeing 747s occurred on the runway at Los Rodeos airport in the North of the Island on 27th March 1977, with 583 people dying as a result. The aircraft involved, KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736, along with

many other planes, had been diverted to Tenerife from Gran Canaria airport after a bomb exploded there. Among other factors, the accident is thought to have been caused by a massive communication breakdown between pilots and the control tower. Mesa Mota, a metal sculpture on the hill overlooking the airport, acts as a memorial for that fatal day.

World News DAVID CAMERON’S Chancellor cannot remember when he last ate a pasty, but the Prime Minister says he is a keen supporter of the Cornish delicacy. The PM entered into the bizarre row, sparked by last week’s Budget, during a Downing Street press conference on the Olympics. In contrast to George Osborne, Cameron insisted he had recently bought a large pasty while passing through the train station at Leeds. “And very good it was, too,” he said. Not to be outdone, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls stocked up on sausage rolls during a trip to Redditch, buying eight in all for £4.70. Hot takeaway snacks have taken on a new political significance in the wake of the Budget, which added 20% to the cost of hot pies and pasties. The Chancellor closed a loophole which meant that some hot takeaways escaped VAT, but the move has caused consternation among retailers and consumers. The high street chain Greggs saw millions wiped off its value following the move, which, the Government

Page 12

www.canarianweekly.com

Whitehall row over pasties keeps blowing hot and cold argues, will help protect takeaway restaurants. Its approach has sparked ridicule because the extra charge depends on the “ambient” temperature. This means that food sold warm in the summer will not incur the duty, but it will be levied in winter when the weather is colder. Osborne confirmed the confusing rules when he was quizzed by the Commons Treasury Committee on Tuesday. “If it’s cold when you buy it, it will not be VAT-able,” he said. But Labour MP John Mann said: “With the weather as it is today, a lukewarm pasty from Greggs is not VATable because the ambient temperature outside is the reference point, whereas if it is the middle of winter and freezing cold, it is VAT. “It’s rather bizarre that so much attention has been focused on the Treasury’s treatment of hot Cornish pasties, given that the Budget has also slapped a new tax on that other great staple of British leisure - the caravan.”

He added: “It is an extraordinarily complex situation when you have to check with the Meteorological Office on whether or not to add VAT on pasties in Greggs, which is what your consultation paper does.” When Osborne admitted that he could not remember the last time he had eaten a pasty from Greggs, the MP said gleefully: “That kind of sums it up.” Cameron defended the move on Wednesday, saying: “It was Nigel Lawson who, over 20 years ago, put VAT on hot takeaway food, and many

pasties and other items of hot takeaway food have had VAT on them since that time. “What we have seen since then is a number of businesses trying to find ways around that rule, fighting court cases and the rest of it. “Many, many small businesses in this country, whether selling fried chicken, fish and chips or hot takeaway pies, are already paying VAT. What the Government has to try to do is make sure the VAT rules are fairly applied. “I don’t think it is fair that the small businessman running a fried-chicken takeaway is having to charge

his customers VAT, but the big supermarket isn’t having to pay VAT on fresh, hot chicken. “It’s about trying to have a sensible VAT arrangement where the boundaries are sensible.” He said his pasty had come from the West Cornwall Pasty Co at Leeds station - but the branch there closed in March 2007. And staff at its city centre branch said they were unaware of ever serving the Prime Minister. A different outlet - The Cornish Bakehouse - also used to operate at the station, but it shut down last Friday. Greggs chief executive Ken

McMeikan claims ministers have “lost touch” and do not appreciate the impact the changes to VAT rules will have on ordinary people. “For hard-working families, putting 20% on to a freshlybaked product will make a severe dent in their pockets when they can ill-afford it,” he said. In Redditch, Labour leader Miliband said the measure was one of many that showed “the Government is hitting people’s living standards in every way it can”. He added: “Not just fuel duty going up, child benefit taken away, tax credits being cut but now, even putting 20% on the cost of pasties, sausage rolls. “And the Chancellor’s excuse? Well, he says you can buy them cold to avoid the tax. It just shows how out of touch this Government is with the vast majority of people in this country. “It also shows that we’ve got a Budget which is hitting millions of people, while cutting taxes for millionaires.

Met’s PR boss resigns The Metropolitan Police’s communications chief Dick Fedorcio has resigned after the awarding of a contract to an ex-News Of The World executive. The force had decided to launch disciplinary proceedings against him over the decision to hire the newspaper’s former executive editor Neil Wallis to provide PR advice for the Met. Mr Wallis’ company Chamy Media was paid £24,000 by Scotland Yard for communications advice between October 2009 and September 2010. Mr Fedorcio, the Met’s head of public affairs, was facing gross misconduct allegations after an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) concluded he had a “case to answer” over the procurement of the contract. Sky’s Martin Brunt said he was “more than the press chief. He sat on Scotland Yard’s management board which is a small group of people who effectively run Britain’s top police force - so he was a big figure”. Mr Fedorcio had been on extended leave from Scotland Yard since August pending the investigation into his relationship with Mr Wallis.

30 March - 05 April 2012

The former NOTW executive was arrested on July 14 last year on suspicion of phonehacking but has not been charged. Mr Fedorcio told the Leveson Inquiry into press standards he only became aware Mr Wallis was of interest to Scotland Yard over phone-hacking on the day of his arrest. The inquiry heard Mr Fedorcio invited people from leading PR firms Bell Pottinger and

Hanover to submit rival bids for the contract before it was awarded to Mr Wallis. Chairman Lord Justice Leveson suggested Mr Fedorcio chose these companies because he knew they would be more expensive than Mr Wallis, adding: “The point is, this is set up to get a result.” Mr Fedorcio denied this, but confirmed he initially wanted to award the contract to Mr Wallis without any competi-

tion. Brunt said:“The broad allegation against Mr Fedorcio was that he rigged the tendering process and gave the contract to a friend of his.” The IPCC’s report, which it sent to the Met on January 10, will be made public shortly. IPCC deputy chair Deborah Glass said: “Our investigation found that Mr Fedorcio has a case to answer in relation to his procurement of the contract for Chamy Media.

Britain in recession? Britain has returned to recession, forecasters from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have said. Gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to shrink by 0.1% in the first three months of this year, according to the OECD, after the economy contracted 0.3% in the fourth quarter of 2011. Sky’s economics editor Ed Conway said: “It will certainly be a blow to the Chancellor who has made it rather clear that although he thinks the economy is rather weak it doesn’t necessarily face the

kind of crunch it did in 2008. “However, when you look at some of the figures over the past few quarters there has been pretty much zero growth over the previous five quarters. “Whether or not you call it a recession, and the OECD is now saying it is a recession, certainly the economy is much weaker than had been hoped for only a few years ago.” Last week in his budget speech, the Chancellor predicted that the economy would avoid slipping into recession. He said the Office For

Budget Responsibility (OBR) had estimated Britain would be in positive growth within the first quarter of 2012. Mr Osborne added that the OBR’s forecast for UK growth was 0.8% in 2012, 2% in 2013, 2.7% in 2014 and 3% in both 2015 and 2016. Elsewhere, the Paris-based OECD predicted contractions in France and Italy in the first three months of 2012, while Germany would see growth of just 0.1%. But an improving US labour market would help the world’s biggest economy grow 2.9% in the first quarter of 2012, according to a report.

Petrol comments fuel panic buying THE Energy Secretary has advised the public to keep their petrol tanks twothirds full amid fears of a strike by fuel tanker drivers and criticism of the Government’s handling of the issue. His advice comes after Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude suggested drivers should fill up any spare jerrycans with petrol and keep them in garages. The comments have been criticised by petrol retailers and fire safety experts. Labour leader Ed Miliband has suggested the Government has worsened the risk of panic buying and

called on the Prime Minister to apologise. The Retail Motor Industry Federation, which represents independent petrol stations, said sales of unleaded were up 81% on Thursday compared with a usual Wednesday. Diesel sales were up 38%, they added. Asda said it had seen increased sales and would not be increasing prices, but insisted there was no need for consumers to change their normal shopping routine as no strike has actually been planned. Transport minister Mike Penning said Mr Maude’s comments had been a “mistake”. “He didn’t understand the size of a jerrycan, he has apologised since,” he told the BBC. The cans can hold 20 litres of fuel.

Twitter Vicar's Reverend spices up his sermons BRITAIN'S first 'Twitter vicar' is harnessing the power of social media to spice up sermons in his church, in an attempt reach out to a younger audience. Leading the service at St Paul's church in jeans, casual shirt and hooded top, the Rev Andrew Alden (@andalden) urges the Somerset congregation to log on to the church internet, and tweet comments about the sermon, on what he calls 'Twitter Sunday'. Large screens display the congregation's tweets, using the hash tag #stpwsm (St Paul's church, Weston-superMare). Pinned to the pillars of the century-old church, posters read 'Abraham123' - not today's bible reading, but the password to the church wifi. Rev Alden told Sky News: "I think it was the approach that Jesus took. He was creative, he was contemporary, he spoke to people in a way that they understood at that time. "For us the way to speak to people is through the media they use - which is Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube." Inspired by his own teenage sons, the reverend said the church needed to speak to young people in their own language. He said: "I think churches across the nation struggle to reach particularly young adults in the 18-30 age range. "Social media - that's their normal form of communication and so I think to use those forms as a way of targeting our audience." The interactive Twitter sermons at this church reflect the change in our attitudes to media more broadly.

BRITONS have been warned to keep their winter woollies close by - as temperatures are set to plunge next week. After the lengthy spell of settled weather across the UK, many have been lulled into a belief of an early summer. “After such a spectacular week of sunshine and warmth, record warmth for the time of year in Scotland, a big change is on the way,” Sky News weather presenter Isobel Lang said.

Page 14

In the same way that many people now 'tweet' or use instant messaging while watching TV, so the congregation at St Paul's felt the notion of the traditional sermon, with one person standing at the front preaching, was rather outdated. They decided they wanted something more interactive, a bit more '21st century'. He explained: "My generation doesn't come to church because they think it's just oldfashioned and outdated, and that's what they think of God. "They think 'oh church is really boring,' so they think God's boring. So obviously if they see a church that's more with the times, where we've got Twitter so it's a bit more interactive people will be encouraged to think church is more relevant for me." The advent of Twitter is not limited to the Church of England - the Pope has his own Twitter feed, although he does not seem to be a frequent tweeter. The Dalai Lama has almost four million followers. Proof, perhaps, that Twitter transcends religious boundaries and generations. Retired vicar John Simons, 78, told Sky News he had tweeted on Sunday, having failed to craft his 140-character message before the end of the service last week. He said: "Well, last week I got in a bit of a muddle with it, so this week I said: 'I came, I saw, I tweeted, and how wonderful it is that we can use modern technology to tell of the gospel."

Florida gunman gets double life sentence THE FAMILIES of two British tourists gunned down in Florida have criticised authorities who released their killer from prison the day before the murders.

The criticism came as friends of victims James Cooper and James Kouzaris faced their murderer Shawn Tyson in court and called him a coward, saying they hope he suffers “every second of every day”. Tyson was given two life sentences in prison after a jury took two hours to find him guilty of killing Mr Cooper and Mr Kouzaris during an attempted robbery in Sarasota last April. Tyson had been released the previous day after his arrest for firing a gun into a car full of people. The families of Mr Cooper and Mr Kouzaris called the decision “premature and irresponsible”. In a statement, they said: “The evil of the killer is one thing but the fact is he would not have been on the streets had instructions to keep him incarcerated been passed from one judge to another.” They said they had been given “a life sentence when our sons were so brutally and needlessly taken from us. Ours is a life sentence, with no chance of parole from a broken heart, and a shattered soul.” Friends of the victims also spoke in court in Sarasota, addressing Tyson directly. Joe Hallett told him: “You have taken us all on a journey to hell.” He said the pair befriended people from different walks

of life and would have tried with Tyson as well. “You murdered two people who, if you had given them the chance, would have given you the time of day.” He told Tyson: “Every night you go to sleep, every morning you wake up, I want you to think of my friends who you murdered. Their images will be imprinted on your conscience up until your very last breath in life. “You have ripped the hearts out of so many of us. Shawn Tyson, I need you to understand the pain you have caused and the amazing personalities that you have killed... “You have failed life. You have been failed by your family, the education system, your local community and society as a whole. However, these failures don’t excuse your actions on April 16 that will now determine your future.” Speaking of the special bond between his friends, Mr Hallett voiced his grief that he will never attend their weddings or watch their children grow up. Poignantly, he stated: “I hope that you and your family suffer every single second of every single day, just as the loved ones of James Kouzaris and James Cooper do... “For every painful detail of

their deaths I have endured, for each disturbing photo I have been exposed to, I am still glad I have this opportunity to look into your eyes and try to explain the pain that you have caused.” Paul Davies, who had wanted Mr Kouzaris to be his best man and was to move to London with Mr Cooper, called Tyson a coward. He said that had the roles been reversed, and his friends found Tyson wandering lost and drunk, they would have helped him “not just because they were good people, because they were men”. “You might think that being a man is about carrying a gun around but it isn’t,” he told Tyson in court. “Wearing a mask and shooting two guys in cold blood is being a coward.” He continued: “The stupid thing about what you did that night is that you’ve ended your own life too... “For the past week, I’ve had to sit in this courtroom and watch photos of my two best friends lying on the ground, riddled with bullet holes. “I’ve had to listen to how you stalked them, made them beg for their lives and then unload a gun on them. “I’ve had to listen to all that knowing that they would

Snow for the UK?

“Looking ahead to next week and temperatures will be nearer 8 or 9C with outbreaks of rain, and perhaps some hill snow. “Contrasts will be most noticeable in Scotland where a new March temperature record of 23.6C was recorded in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire on Tuesday.” While some may mourn the loss of the record-breaking sunny spell, others hope a

return to rain will help ease spreading drought fears. Parts of Yorkshire have already been declared drought-stricken, as lower river and reservoir levels

spread from the South and East. In early March, seven water companies said hosepipe bans would start ahead of Easter to help ease water supplies after

two unusually dry winters, with people asked to limit showers to four minutes. With the current dry spell’s outbreaks of fire across the UK, next week’s rain is needed by parched areas. Lang said: “Hopefully the drought-stricken parts of eastern and southeast England will receive some rain - but will it help? “The drought is inevitable after such prolonged dry weather- we would need

never in a million years have threatened you or tried to hurt you. They wouldn’t hurt anyone because, like I say, they were good men, the most amazing men you could have ever met. “Maybe, if you were more of a man that night you would have known them long enough to find that out for yourself.” Mr Kouzaris and Mr Cooper had strayed into a rundown housing estate after a night out during a family holiday. Witnesses testified that Tyson told them he saw two “crackers” - his phrase for white people - walking through the neighbourhood and that he intended to rob them. The tourists said they did not have any money and begged Tyson to let them go home. He shot the men several times. Tyson was undone by his own words - he told friends about the shootings in the hours after the killings, then asked friends to hide the murder weapon and bury bullets. A DNA expert said Tyson’s skin cells were found on Cooper’s jeans. Tyson’s defence team tried to discredit the witnesses by saying many of them had criminal records and cooperated with detectives to avoid prison. There were no witnesses to the shooting and the murder weapon has never been found. Prosecutors admitted the evidence against Tyson was circumstantial but said there was an “enormous” amount and that it all pointed to him. Tyson was 16 at the time of the shooting and, because of his age, could not face the death penalty.

weeks or months’ worth of above average rain to help relieve the situation.” The return to reality for Britain comes as the area of high pressure responsible for the settled stretch moves away. “Moister north to northwesterly winds will bring us cloudier skies, some drizzle and a noticeable drop in temperature,” Lang said. “Although not much rain is likely this weekend, perhaps a little drizzle on Saturday, some more persistent rain may spread south during Monday and Tuesday.”

Lancaster named for England Rugby's job STUART LANCASTER has been confirmed by the Rugby Football Union as the new England head coach. Lancaster - interviewed for the position last week - is understood to have beaten former South Africa and Italy coach Nick Mallet to the job. The 42-year-old former PE teacher’s appointment on a four-year deal. RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie has made his recommendation to the board following the search for the man who will lead England to the 2015 World Cup on home soil. Lancaster impressed during the Six Nations after the humiliation of last year’s World Cup and the subsequent resignation of former manager Martin Johnson. The former Leeds boss will want the coaching staff he had during the Six Nations Graham Rowntree and Andy Farrell - to remain intact. However, Farrell has two years remaining on his contract with Saracens and the club is keen to retain his services. Lancaster - elevated from the second-string Saxons as an interim measure in

Page 16

December - won four of five Six Nations games, losing only narrowly to the Grand Slam winners Wales. England produced impressive displays against France and Ireland. The Cumbrian instilled new discipline and pride in the England shirt, eschewing warm weather training in the build-up to the winter tournament to take his squad to Leeds. However, there are those with reservations, including Sky Sports rugby commentator and former England and British Lions player Stuart Barnes. Barnes said Lancaster should have continued his trial into the three test tour of South Africa in June. Barnes said: “I don’t believe his brief portfolio has been tested to the full degree. “England won games (in the Six Nations) but they didn’t play great rugby. My view is he needed to go to South Africa to prove he couldn’t just do it in the lower tier of the Six Nations but against the elite in South Africa. “I feel it’s a very big risk and we could come back from South Africa with no answer to the creativity problems.”

Mobile roaming charges set to drop by summer THE DAYS of skyhigh mobile roaming charges are to come to an end just in time for the summer holidays, following an agreement by policymakers in Europe. The European Commission and European Parliament have reached a preliminary deal which will progressively reduce charges for calls and texts when travelling abroad and impose a cap on data roaming charges. Under the proposals, by July making calls while on holiday within the EU will cost 23p at most, text messages will be capped at 7.5p and mobile internet at 59p per megabyte (MB) of data. But by the summer of 2014, these charges will fall to just 16p for outgoing calls, 5p for text messages and mobile internet will cost as little as 17p per MB. Considering there is currently no limit on data roaming charges, the

changes will be welcomed by the many people who have had to limit their smartphone and tablet use while abroad to prevent returning home to massive bills. “Consumers are fed up with being ripped off by high roaming charges. The new roaming deal gives us a longterm structural solution, with lower prices, more choice and a new smart approach for data and internet browsing,” said Neelie Kroes, EC vice president for the digital agenda. Once the changes come into full force in two years’ time, customers will also be able

to choose a separate cheaper mobile phone contract for roaming, even on a different network, whilst keeping the same phone number. The proposals will see margins for network providers squeezed, especially on mobile internet. Although there is currently no limit to what a company can charge consumers for data roaming for example, wholesale prices that operators charge each other are capped at just 42p which gives the potential of unlimited profit on the service. The rules will also help

consumers avoid bill shocks when travelling outside the EU. From July, customers will be alerted by text message, email of pop-up window when they are approaching 50 euros (£42), or their pre-agreed level, of data downloads, and will need to confirm they want to continue. Policymakers said they expect the proposals to be approved by the European Parliament in May and the European Council in June, paving the way for the new rules to enter into force on July 1.

They played hosts to a K9 fund-raiser earlier this month which was a social and financial success, thanks primarily to their input and that of compere Aidy Evans. The tombola and raffle was hugely popular, and there was also lots of interest in the book stall manned by Meryl and Jim, the knitted doggie

coats and blankets made by Lin, and the newly-designed K9 T-shirts from Tee Candy. There was also an auction for Fluffy’s giant penguin, which raised 40 euros, thanks to the combined efforts of the Presley family who successfully re-homed him. However, no charity fundraiser would be a success without the talents of the artistes who provided varied entertainment throughout the evening. Many thanks, therefore, to Pip Brown, Brad Chermside, Leslie Presley, Gordon Rigley, and Becky Brooks for their time and efforts in keeping the audience amused and

happy. There were three ‘special’ guests in the audience, over from the UK; Sheila and Arthur, parents of K9 kennel manager Hazel, and Blanche, mother of kennel maid Lin. Also, grateful thanks to the K9 volunteers for their help on the night and to all those present, who contributed to an enjoyable evening which raised a total of 325 euros. Tomorrow (Saturday) gives K9 an opportunity to say “Thank You” to its volunteers and supporters by providing them with an afternoon of fun, chat, reminiscing and a buffet. This takes place from 3-6pm

at The Heritage Bar, Los Cristianos. Entertainment will be provided by Aidy Evans and guests throughout the afternoon, with a.quiz at 4pm and the buffet at 5pm. There is also a huge ‘Bottle & Teddy’ tombola, plus a raffle and the usual stalls. All old and new supporters are very welcome, but K9 asks that you reply to 619 678 384, or email mikebtenerife@ yahoo.co.uk to assist us with numbers for catering. Toby Strong’s tribute to his tragic cancer friend TENERIFE ‘Swallow’ Toby Strong has decided that his book, Waking Up To Sunshine, which is being sold on Amazon, will be used to raise cash to fight cancer. It follows the recent death from cancer of a very good friend, who was one of the first to buy the book when it went on sale last year. The author, incorrectly called Toby Young in last week’s Canarian Weekly - for which we apologise profusely - relates the harrowing yet uplifting, sometimes amusing, story of how he coped with the trauma of learning that he had only months to live when diagnosed with stomach cancer. He goes on to recall how he managed to survive, and how he has enjoyed the next 10 years of winters in the Tenerife sunshine. The book is available for download to e-readers from Amazon. Last month’s tragic death

Line dancers club together for Lions SUSAN and Ralph Solomon, San Miguel Lions Club stalwarts, last week received a “wonderful donation” from Club Atlantis Line Dancing Club in Playa de Las Americas. Lions President Sue and Secretary Ralph were invited to attend a presentation ceremony at a coffee morning by Pauline and Sandra, who run the club. Sue accepted the 485-euro

windfall and Ralph said: “It was a wonderful donation from the line-dancing club, including a sum from the coffee morning and book sales, and special thanks to Pauline for choosing us. “They all seemed to be having a great time at this club morning, but it was a little bit energetic for me so, reluctantly, I sat it out with a coffee. “On behalf of San Miguel Lions, we send our thanks to all the line dancers who helped make this donation possible. It will go towards our many charity projects.”

THE RESIDENT'S

CHOICE!

Smugglers Tuesday 3 April, ITV1, 9pm

W C CHOICE

Filmed over two years, This Smugglers special documentary trails detectives from the City of London Police as they secretly track and arrest a gang smuggling millions of pounds worth of counterfeit goods into Britain. Detective Superintendent David Clark from The City of London Police explains how the gang’s smuggling network stretched from China across Europe into Britain. “This is a global smuggling network that has been brought to its knees today, make no mistake about that. It is not just about the people we have in custody who are flooding the UK market, we are talking the best part of 30 containers taken out circulation in the US and we have got the key king pin players in custody as well out in Guam.” The compelling new documentary for ITV1 reveals how the trade in counterfeit goods is worth an estimated £1 billion a year, which is as lucrative as the cannabis market in Britain. The vast majority of counterfeit goods slip through our borders undetected every year, as criminal gangs become ever more intelligent in concealing their operations. Detectives receive intelligence about the first shipment arriving at Felixstowe, Britain’s largest container port. The smugglers have listed the container as carrying furniture parts, but inside are copies of some of Nike’s top selling trainers. In the space of three weeks, detectives secretly track the gang as they take delivery of three container loads of counterfeit trainers. For the first time, cameras follow the meticulous police surveillance operation over many months to identify the gang members involved, and discover how their large profits are being laundered through a front business and hidden in safety deposit boxes. Detective Superintendent David Clark explains how the gang has gone to great lengths to avoid detection by using a series of false identities. “They don’t dress up specifically well, they don’t drive high powered or high value motor vehicles, they just live under that radar, but the more that you get into them, the more that you see how well organised they are, how well oiled their machine is, and the propensity and size of the illegal trade they are operating.” In a dramatic dawn raid involving 200 officers at several locations across London the four gang members are arrested and £1 million worth of counterfeit goods and £480,000 in cash is seized. Documents taken from the gang’s warehouses reveal they were making so much money they were also smuggling their goods via airfreight into East Midlands, Coventry and Heathrow Airport. DC Graeme Ord explains “The scale of this operation is vast, we reckon today we will fill three 40 foot containers full of counterfeit shoes and other bits of counterfeit clothing. Some of this stuff has been brought in from Athens and clearly they are very well connected throughout the smuggling world and the counterfeit world.”

Titanic With Len Goodman BBC1, 8.30pm

In a new three-part series, Titanic With Len Goodman, the Strictly Come Dancing judge discovers how the impact of the Titanic disaster is still felt a century after the ship sank. Len has his own connection to the Titanic. Before he was a dancer he was a welder for Harland and Woolf, the company that built Titanic between 1909 and 1912 in Belfast. Len worked for them 50 years later at their yard in East London. To mark the centenary of the Titanic tragedy Len explores the ship’s 100 year legacy and learns how for the victims’ families - and for the survivors themselves - the sinking of the ship was just the beginning of the story. Generations later, those stories linked to the Titanic are still unfolding. Len meets the modernday descendants to learn how, a century on, Titanic’s legacy lives on. In the first programme of the series, Len discovers how Titanic claimed the lives of eight men in Belfast before she even touched the water. He tries his hand at riveting, experiencing firsthand the blood and sweat that went into building a ship a century ago. He visits Southampton, to find out why it was the city hit hardest by Titanic’s death toll. He also meets descendants of Titanic’s crew, who describe how just traumatised the disaster left their relatives. Len also explores the story of the Titanic band. It’s one of the best known stories from the ship, but few will have heard how the death of one of the musicians tore his family apart for one hundred years. Len meets a descendant who tells him how and why this happened. Len says:“Making this series has been a fascinating journey for me. You might think the Titanic story was just about a ship that sank. But I’ve found out there is so much more to it than that. The real story of the Titanic isn’t about a ship, it’s about people, and in making this series I’ve been lucky to meet some wonderful personalities who astonished me with their tales of how Titanic affected their families forever. We filmed all over the UK, but spent a whole week in Belfast where I had a wonderful time meeting people. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and really hope everyone will get as much enjoyment watching it at home.” Edward Hart, who directed and produced the series, says: “Working with Len was a total pleasure. He’s a constant professional who’s determined to get it right whatever the weather. He’s also sharp as a tack, with a curious mind and, as we all know from Strictly, a lovely manner with people. That, and his own experience in a Harland and Wolff shipyard, made him the ideal man with whom to explore Titanic’s legacy.”

“If you could pick your family and friends up and bring them here then it would be perfect. It would be paradise.” Year round sunshine, a relaxed, outdoor lifestyle and beautiful beaches lure nearly thirty thousand Brits to the golden shores of Australia every year. In addition Australians earn, on average, 20 per cent more then their UK counterparts. Of the six million British ex-pats living abroad, almost a quarter have decided to settle down under. Moving on from the Gold coast to Sydney, Poms in Paradise is back with more inspirational and entertaining stories from people who have given up everything for a new life on the other side of the world. Moving your life to the other side of the world is no mean feat and takes a certain amount of courage. Many think about it but far less actually take the plunge. Poms in Paradise is back with 10, brand new, half hour episodes all set in the vibrant city of Sydney. Famed for its beautiful harbour and the seventy beaches up and down the coast, the average Summer temperature of 35 degrees is also a huge draw. This series includes a host of memorable characters, from a variety of backgrounds. Some have been in Oz for years, others are fresh off the plane and still finding their feet. In addition we meet some of the Australians who have made them feel at home. From a confirmed bachelor who has moved to Sydney, fallen in love and become engaged within 18 months, a volunteer lifeguard who is living 12,000 miles away from her husband and a successful hairdresser who is looking forward to a visit from her 82 year old Mum, to an Irish backpacker who arrived on his travels 8 years ago and went on to set up a successful Diving Company on Bondi beach, Brits of all ages and backgrounds emigrate to the other side of the world for many different reasons. But despite the beautiful weather and relaxed way of life, one in five Brits eventually move back to the UK and the most common reason for returning home is friends and family. We find out how well the ex pats have adapted to life down under and whether they really have found paradise in Australia.

Following up on his own firsthand experience of the campaign in 1982, Hastings looks at how victory in the South Atlantic revived the reputation of the armed forcesand Britain's reputation as a military power after years of decline.

Drama series. Denise is left devastated when husband Dave announces he is leaving her. She embarks on a personal mission to win him back, but Leanne thinks she is going too far. Denise and Leanne hit the shops, Pretty Woman-style. The police investigation into the robbery leaves Stuart and Jamie to answer some awkward questions, and Bob's brain scan reveals a potential problem. Meanwhile, someone from Leanne's past tries to make contact after the lottery win is announced.

Hairy Bikers' Bakeation BBC2, 20:00 The halfway point of the Hairy Bikers' Bakeation sees them journey to the furthest reaches of Europe culminating in an amazing family party thrown by Dave's wife Lil, who comes from Romania. Three countries, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, provide the Bikers with ample opportunity to explore some great baking. It all starts in a cafe in Bratislava, where the Bikers are served three cakes which, believe it or not, are inspired by British TV cookery shows. They also have an encounter with kremesh, the Hungarian take on a vanilla slice served in a cafe that survived the ravages of communism; langos, a roadside snack of deepfried pastry with sour cream and cheese and Tokaj wine, the choice of kings once more prized than any made in France.

Our Food BBC2 , 8pm Our Food is a brand new four part series for BBC Two. Our landscape, our climate and our history define what we grow and where we grow it. In each episode, journalist Giles Coren explores a different corner of the British Isles in search of the foods that make us who we are. From the black cattle of North Wales, who were once herded all the way to London, to the cherries of Kent that can be traced back to a sweet-toothed Henry VIII, British food is about much more than what we put on our plates. Giles is joined on this journey by botanist James Wong, historian Lucy Worsley, archaeologist Alex Langlands and horticulturalist Alys Fowler. Together they discover how our soils and seas have shaped our tastes and traditions, travelling through Norfolk, North Wales, Kent and the West of Scotland to tell the story of Our Food. In episode one Giles Coren embarks on a journey through Norfolk, a county where local, seasonal foods sit alongside large scale commercial agriculture. Norfolk floats free at the end of the M11. This is a place with no motorway, no high speed rail links, no major airport - a place where isolation has allowed both tradition and enterprise to thrive. Giles learns how to tell the difference between a male and female crab when he gets a taste of life as a Cromer fisherman, while Lucy Worsley uncovers the Mexican past of the oh-so-traditional British turkey. The team also discover how the humble turnip changed the way we farm and why half of our sugar comes from a grubby Norfolk root.

Monty will have to convince the skippers to work in a new way - and the local people to try new species of fish. With Christmas just around the corner, the whole project is thrown into jeopardy when a massive winter storm rolls in off the Atlantic, preventing the fishermen and Monty from getting out to sea.

Mammoths have transfixed humans since the depths of the last Ice Age when their herds roamed across what is now Europe and Asia. Although extinct for thousands of years, scientists can now paint an incredibly detailed picture of the lives of these members of the elephant family thanks to whole carcasses beautifully preserved in the Siberian permafrost. Fraud Squad

17:00 ..........................Newsround 17:15 ............................... Pointless

ITV1, 9pm Fraud Squad lifts the lid on the organised crime gangs making millions from cash machine crime. With exclusive access to the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit, Fraud Squad shows how the gangs use a vast array of sophisticated equipment to steal customers’ bank account details. Secret cameras record pin numbers and skimmers copy account details from the magnetic strip on the bank card. Some gangs even design whole false ATM fascias. Head of The Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit DCI Paul Barnard says: “The criminals constantly try and evolve their technology to beat the technology the banks put in place. It’s a constant battle to try and work out where the criminal is going next” One nationality has a monopoly on the trade, the equipment and the rewards. In the first three months of 2011, Detectives from the Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime unit identified 120 Romanians linked ATM crime. DCI Paul Barnard says: “The fact is 92 percent of all ATM fraud we see in this country is committed by Romanian nationals. Very, very tight communities, very tight gangs” The crime is highly lucrative earning the gangs well over £2 million a month and the competition is fierce. DC Dave Cass says: “We’ve seen teams of Eastern Europeans at a machine and another team waiting to go on it, that’s how busy they were doing it, one team would come off and another team would come on.” Fraud Squad trails detectives as they raid a house in Chigwell, Essex to arrest 22 year old Romanian Maxim Catana and fellow gang members Nikolajs Delvers and Daniel Anghell. Inside the house detectives discover what they describe as “a working ATM factory”. The gang had stolen bank account details for more than 4,000 British victims, potentially pooling them over £2 million. Paperwork reveals they had targeted ATMs across the south coast of England with military precision. Detectives only recover £2,000 in cash from the house, as the Romanian gangs use an intricate smuggling network to quickly move the millions they are making. DCI Paul Barnard reveals: “More and more they’re turning to the cash going out in bulk in vehicles, being carried by mules who take the money to their contacts in Romania.” DCS Steve Head, Head of the Economic Crime Directorate for The City of London Police, explains how the crime fuels a luxurious lifestyle for Gang bosses in Romania:“We can see quite clearly what they are doing with the money back in Romania; they are spending it on a lavish lifestyle, flash cars, flash houses. What sits behind it all is the greed, the greed of the people who are organising it, the greed of the professionals along the way who are enabling it and the greed of those people who are actually creating the technology to enable systems to be overcome, sheer criminal greed.” Fraud Squad films detectives as they dramatically arrest two young men who are using the Romanian gangs’ latest weapon, the cash trap. DS Tom Finnegan explains how the cash trap works: “It will go across the front of an ATM where the money is dispensed. The money will come out and stick to this device. They will go from one ATM to another to another...it is very lucrative for what they are doing.” The two arrested men, Nela Bura and Viorel Strango live in modest accommodation, hold down 9-5 jobs and show little signs of enjoying the fruits of their criminal labour. DCS Steve Head explains “It is important that we understand that those people are coming from very poor backgrounds often, they are being shipped over here as just another product in some ways in order to do the bidding of their criminal masters.” The documentary also examines the lucrative criminal trade of buying and selling stolen British bank details online and transferring them onto counterfeit cards. Detectives are filmed intercepting a parcel from Malaysia containing 2,000 high quality counterfeit credit cards. DCI Paul Barnard highlights the scale of the problem “It’s a huge market, it’s worth millions and millions of pounds. We’ve seen a number of websites where credit card details are sold between criminal groups. You obtain the details, you get the cards in, but then the clever bit is putting on your details from your card. We’re seeing a substantial number of cards imported from the Far East. They look spectacularly genuine, and we can’t tell the difference sometimes.”

Lord Sugar decides to mix up the teams for the third task, which is to come up with a new condiment; one team goes for a Mediterraneanstyle ketchup, and the other a chilli chutney. Half of each team head to a condiment factory in Essex to make their product, while the others stay in London to design brands and set up sales appointments. Before producing in bulk, both teams must produce samples for pitching to a high-end deli. Ketchup is bottled and swiftly despatched, but too much chilli in the chutney means that one team have to pitch to bemused buyers without a product.

Death Row Channel 4, 22:00 Death Row tells the fascinating and controversial story of crime and the death penalty. Over the period of a year, Werner Herzog has interviewed inmates in America as they await their death, and uncovered brutal stories of rape and murder. The third and final portraits are of Joseph Garcia and George Rivas. Garcia's case is one of a tragic outcome from an everyday event, and a punishment out of proportion. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of a young man. Drunk and jealous of the attention his ex-girlfriend was paying to Garcia, Garcia's victim started a fight, which ended with Garcia fatally stabbing him. Garcia subsequently participated in a prison break masterminded by George Rivas.

A Place in the Sun Live THIS UK’s biggest and best-attended overseas property exhibition, and the next show takes place at Earls Court London this weekend, from today (Friday) until Sunday.

The official exhibition of the hit Channel 4 television series, A Place in the Sun Live attracts thousands of serious overseas property hunters every spring and autumn. There are hundreds of exhibitors showcasing properties from popular countries like France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Florida, and it’s the perfect opportunity for visitors to meet the agents faceto-face and ask them all kinds of questions. There’s

a packed programme of free-to-attend seminars on

The Main Stage sponsored by MBi Consulting Ltd with

advice from Amanda Lamb, Jonnie Irwin and Jasmine Harman, gained over years of taking house-hunters around the world with the A Place in the Sun TV shows, as well as expert guests in the form of leading overseas property experts. Spain topped the poll in the top ten best places to buy abroad. France is in second with its enviable lifestyle and accessibility. Golfers’ favourite Portugal came in third and is followed by Italy, where Brits have been snapping up traditional farmhouses for years. Seven of the top ten destinations are within the Eurozone, with Greece and Malta performing consistently on the wishlists of UK residents looking for a home abroad, and nearby Turkey still popular. The only new entry into

this year’s top ten is the Caribbean, previously the haunt of the rich and famous, with celebrities such as Wayne and Colleen Rooney and Catherine Zeta Jones owning homes there. It seems double-dip recessions don’t dent our enthusiasm for a home in a palm-fringed paradise with Barbados seeing nine per cent more arrivals year on year in the first nine months of 2011. Says Liz Rowlinson, Editor of A Place in the Sun magazine: “What’s really interesting about our annual ‘Ten Best Places to Buy Abroad’ survey is that it shows UK buyers as sticking to tried and tested European countries – yet also willing to travel further to destinations such as Florida and the Caribbean to find their perfect holiday home location.”

Beware when you compare WHILE price comparison websites shout from the rooftops about saving you money, a new inves-

tigation by Which? has found the price you see isn’t always the price you get. Posing as a consumer, they tested 11 of the most

popular comparison sites and found many of them using pre-selected answers and assumptions in their online forms. This may make quotes appear cheaper, but can also lead to basic ‘one

Home-buyers are warned not to cut corners legally POTENTIAL property-buyers in Spain have been warned to avoid short-cuts when purchasing a home or holiday apartment. Estate agents, lawyers and property developers who offer ways to save money and speed up the conveyancing system may leave purchasers with hugely expensive bills . The warning comes from British Embassy officials who, despite the well-known problems facing thousands of past purchasers of property in Spain, are aware that people are still being tempted by cut-price offers. They know there are still people in the property industry trying to tempt buyers with future methods to secure attractive dream homes cheaply or more quickly. But such offers may, in fact, may prove to be poor value. Embassy property adviser Alex Brown says:“You

Page 38

should exercise extreme caution if an estate agent, promoter or lawyer urges you to cut corners to save money or time. “The Spanish property conveyancing system is different from the UK. When you choose a person to help with your purchase, check that he/she is a qualified, reliable professional, with significant experience of operating in Spain and expert knowledge of how the system works. “ Although the vast majority of British property owners enjoy life in Spain and have had no problems, thousands of British expats are facing some kind of legal problem with their homes. This applies especially to those who were advised to cut corners during the purchasing process, while others, through no fault of their own, are caught up in the complexities of Spanish planning. Alex Brown adds: “There is a wealth of information

on the Embassy’s website UKinSpain. We strongly urge people to check the advice in full, make sure they use fully qualified, reputable advisers throughout the purchase process. And they should avoid any of ‘dodgy deals’ that could cause huge amounts of heartache and the loss of hard-earned money later on.” The advice comes as thousands of Brits prepare to head for the annual A Place in the Sun show in London, which runs from 30th March until 1st April and is aimed at potential buyers abroad. The show’s website www. aplaceinthesun.com/ offers information about your legal rights and tax issues when buying overseas. Further advice on buying property in Spain can be found on the Embassy website UKinSpain at: http:// ukinspain.fco.gov.uk/en/ help-for-british-nationals / living-in-spain/property-inspain.

size fits all’ policies that could be unsuitable for individual needs or even prove invalid in the event of a claim. Also, when their researcher got quotes for car insurance from the 11 sites, they found that many of the quotes given by the comparison sites excluded extras such as legal cover, a courtesy car or personal injury cover. None of the sites asked up front if these were required. When they clicked through to the insurers’ websites, on some sites the option to buy these extras was offered at a later stage, while on others these extras were automatically added on and needed to be removed if not required. In both cases, adding optional extras resulted in an increase to the original quote offered on the price comparison site. Overall, customer satisfaction with comparison sites has dropped, with customer scores for comparison sites having fallen from an already low 46% to just 42% in the last year. The survey also found even the highest rated comparison sites were on a par with the lowest-rated insurance companies. Price comparison sites give the impression there is no need to go anywhere else for the best deal. The research found that none of the 11 most popular comparison sites covered more

than a third of the market for home or travel insurance. Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, says: “Price comparison sites claim to do all of the work for you, but our research found if you want to get the best deal you still need to shop around or it could cost you hundreds of pounds. Going to the insurer directly may also give you a better quote. “We want to see tougher regulation and monitoring of price comparison sites to make sure they treat customers fairly and transparently.” Our advice to people when using price comparison sites includes: 1. Check all questions for pre-selected answers because missing them could affect your premium price and jeopardise future claims. 2. Double check all the details to make sure you’re getting the cover you need. 3. Make sure you get quotes from companies directly as well as using more than one price comparison site because not all providers are listed on comparison sites. 4. Watch out for unwanted extras because when you click through to a company from a comparison site they may have preselected cover you don’t need. 5. Make sure you read the privacy policy and check how your information is going to be used.

CARL PATTISON

from Robot, answers your hair questions

King of Cuts I DISCUSSED the new age of haircuts in a column some months ago, and of reverting to more emphasis on the cutting rather the styling. This has been seen on all the major catwalks and styling magazines - out goes over-styled hair and, right on trend, we see “real” haircuts in which the emphasis is not on how the hair has been styled, but on the way it has been cut SASSOON cuts are everywhere. To you at home, that’s Vidal Sassoon, the Godfather of Hairdressing, without whom we wouldn’t be where we are today. He was the creator of most precision haircuts that we see today, and he laid down the law of hairdressing over 50 years ago, stating that hair should be cut like cloth and should be allowed to fall naturally. Hair, he insisted, should not be forced to do what it doesn’t want to do because this only looks unnatural and contrived. It should swing back into shape and be so simple to maintain, no matter what the texture or length. Hair cut this way, said Sassoon, should give you a style that not only looks good in the salon but looks fantastic at home as well. I always remember the Sassoon adverts of the

Raw deal for diabetics, who are being left in the dark by 'inefficient' NHS RATES of strokes and kidney failure in people with diabetes reached record levels in the 200910 period, according to the latest figures available from Diabetes UK. These conditions are complications of diabetes, and more than 16,000 diabetes-sufferers in England are estimated to have had a stroke in 2009-10, based on an incidence rate of 0.69%. This represents a 57% rise since 2006-07. More than 8,800 people with diabetes are also thought to have suffered kidney failure in 2009-10, based on an incidence rate of 0.38%, which is 31% higher than in 2006-07.

Eighties, which said: “If you don’t look good, we don’t look good,” meaning their salons. It’s this that I still hold true in my profession because I take my work so seriously. Hairdressing isn’t something that should be taken up as just a job, and it’s a part of my life that I wouldn’t be without. So the next time you’re looking in the mirror when doing your hair, ask yourself one question: “Does my hair and my haircut do me justice? Does my hair look good because of the cut, or only when I leave the salon?” I love telling my clients when they arrive that their hair doesn’t look as though

it needs doing. This means that I’m doing my job in making sure that they look good - and making me feel good, too. It’s a two-way thing because if I get good feedback about my work, then I’m also happy. Having good hair isn’t rocket science: a good cut, the right product and a complementing colour. That’s it, and it shouldn’t be a chore to do. Always ask your stylist for advice before you try out a new style, and don’t forget that you will have to maintain it at home. So make sure you all pick the right stylists to do their best for your hair.

There are now 2.9 million people in the UK diagnosed with Type 1 or 2 diabetes. An estimated 850,000 more have Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to unhealthy lifestyles and obesity. Yet they are unaware. By 2025, five million people are likely to have diabetes. Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: “It is shocking that rates of strokes and kidney failure in people with diabetes are now at record levels. Yet thousands of people are still not getting the health checks which can help prevent them. “These figures are a reminder that all people with diabetes should have these checks every year, as this is the simplest and most effective way of reducing risk of complications such as stroke and kidney failure.”

She added: “We also need to get the message across to people with diabetes that they should demand these checks if they are not already getting them. “These appalling figures remind us again of the lack of progress in this area, and they highlight the importance of applying pressure on the Government and the NHS to give everyone with diabetes the basic checks that can help bring the rise in potentially preventable complications to an end.” Care Services Minister Paul Burstow said: “Poor and inefficient diabetes care is bad for patients, bad for the NHS and is completely unacceptable. “This audit shows that the local NHS must act to ensure that diabetics are getting their health checks every year.”

Sugary drinks are not so sweet on the heart JUST one can of a sugary soft drink every day increases a man’s heart disease risk by 20%, according to researchers in the US.

And levels of blood biomarkers (they indicate a particular disease) linked to heart disease were also raised by regular consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks. Scientists analysed data on almost 43,000 men taking part in the Health Professionals’ Follow-Up Study - a major health and lifestyle investigation in the US. They uncovered the link with

sugary drinks after controlling for other risk factors, including smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption and family history. Men who downed a 12oz sugar-sweetened beverage a day, equivalent to one can, had a 20% higher risk of heart disease than men who did not consume any. The scientists also measured fats and proteins in the blood, which are indicators for heart disease, and men who enjoyed sugary beverages regularly had high levels of harmful triglyceride blood fats and the inflammation marker C-reactive protein. They also had lower levels

of high-density lipoprotein, which is a beneficial form of cholesterol that protects against heart disease. “This study adds to the growing evidence that sugary beverages are detrimental to cardiovascular health,” said the Harvard School of Public Health study. British Heart Foundation dietician Tracy Parker said: “We already know that too many sugar-sweetened drinks are bad for our teeth, and that the excess calories from them can make us put on weight, which is a risk factor for heart disease. “But while we need more research into it, the study reminds us that they shouldn’t be a daily part of our diet.” She added: “Go for healthier alternatives such as water, low-fat milk or unsweetened juices, which are kinder to our waistlines as well as our heart.” But the results, published in the journal Circulation, were rejected by the British Soft Drinks Association. A spokesman said: “Drinking sweetened beverages does not cause an increased risk of heart disease - not based on this study, or any other study in the available science. “These findings could have been the result of other lifestyle changes over the 22year study period involving men aged 40-75.”

Keep brushing up on your levels of hygiene FAILURE to brush your teeth regularly - and carefully - at least twice a day could eventually lead to a heart attack or stroke.

More and more studies indicate that the health of the teeth and gums can affect the entire body. And inflamed gums (periodontitis) can, especially, have a negative response to your overall health. It means that bad teeth can pose more of a health risk to a person than just an aesthetics problem. The chronic inflammation weakens the immune system, and can lead to an increased risk of diabetes, heart attacks, rheumatism and lung diseases. Inflamed gums This is known generally as gum disease and usually hits people over the age of 40. It is caused by poor oral hygiene, or an incorrect brushing technique, and can lead to a bacterial plaque that

eventually attacks the gums. The onset of infection often remains undetected because it causes no pain. The trouble usually begins with bleeding gums, swelling of the gums and bad breath. In extreme cases, it will form gum pockets, and bone loss is reduced. Spread of inflammation The inflammation is not restricted to the oral cavity. From the gingival pockets, bacteria and pro-inflammatory mediators travel into the bloodstream. Swelling occurs in the blood vessels, or even in previously-damaged heart valves. The result: the risk for atherosclerosis (hardening or

arteries), plus heart attack and stroke increases. Studies show, for example, that the likelihood of cardiovascular disease in people with periodontal disease is increased by 70%. Bacteria attack heart and lungs The connection between bad teeth and the lungs was shown recently by US researchers, who found that people with bronchitis or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) often have bad teeth.

Lung disease is caused when bacteria from the upper throat are inhaled and reach the lower respiratory tract. Various factors, such as smoking or a weakened immune system, increase the risk of developing lung disease. However, further research is needed to clarify the precise relationship, say researchers. Diabetics often have inflamed gums The relationship between diabetes and gum disease has been studied extensively. Those people with poorlycontrolled blood sugar levels can be prone to bad wounds. The excess sugar in the blood promotes inflammation and inhibits healing. Diabetics can suffer up to 3.5-fold increased risk of developing periodontal disease. Conversely, the inflamed gums increase the insulin resistance.

Preventing periodontal disease Proper oral hygiene is essential to prevent gum disease. Teeth brushing should occur at least twice a day, and the spaces between the teeth should also be cleaned daily with

floss, or special inter-dental brushes. At least twice a year, a prophylaxis should be performed by a dentist. That means the deposits and tartar are removed, the teeth are treated with fluoride and patients are given a thorough guide to dental care.

Mouth-watering La Cava! YOU may remember back in October, when I first wrote about La Cava in Los Cristianos, that I could not wait to sample more of their fabulous menu. Well, my wish was granted so, with empty bellies and healthy appetites, we headed for the port. As always, we had to book in advance because this place really does get full rather quickly, and this night was no exception (not a spare seat to be had). And, as we were led to our seats by the everpleasant Rony, we noticed an international feel to the clientele. So, with a couple of glasses

of Marques de Caceras to whet the whistle, we started to scan THAT menu. The only problem with coming here again is that the last meal we had really hit the mark, and it was a real strain to select something different. I decided that it was okay to have one dish we’d had before so I settled for the vol a vents: crisp puff pastry, stuffed to the brim with chicken and mushrooms in a rich sauce and just as good as last time. And with my partner plumping for the spinach au gratin: fabulous, fresh-pureed spinach, topped with a tasty creamy cheese, we felt we had chosen well. While we awaited our main courses to arrive, we both remarked that this place just stays busy - literally not a spare seat in the house -

and I must again stress the importance of booking well in advance for this impressive restaurant. Now to the mains. For

Page 42

me, Hungarian goulash, which came with a choice of potatoes and red cabbage (oh that red cabbage!), and was nothing short of spectacular,

with the meat just melting in the mouth and a sauce so full of different herbs and spices that I couldn’t even try to list here. I had chosen well again, so now to try my partner’s Chicken a la crème, flambéed in brandy. My word, succulent chicken breast just smothered in a mesmerising sauce with a beautifully creamy texture, blended exquisitely with the pure decadence of the brandy. All this was accompanied by

fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes to create, I’m sure you will agree, two stunning dishes. Dessert? Oh if we must! Again, I just had to repeat my last visit and went for the icecream cake - gorgeous and very moreish, and topped with fresh cream. On the other side of the table, a deep-fried camembert with fresh toast and red-currant jam was being demolished by my partner, who assured me it was superb. So now, with mixture of wonderful aromas still emanating from the kitchen, and very full stomachs, we bid goodnight to La Cava. It just leaves me to thank Rony, Felix and most definitely Ludo, the owner and chef, for and excellent meal. We will see you real soon. See advert on page 7.

Real Madrid Island

TOP European football club Real Madrid has unveiled plans to spend $1bn (£630m) to build a lavish resort island in the United Arab Emirates, complete with luxury hotels, marina and amusement park. The opulent resort on the artificial island of Al Marjan also will house a 10,000-seat stadium, half of which will be open to the sea, as well as sports facilities, a club museum and a residential area. Joined by Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, club legend and now director Zinedine Zidane, and a host of first team players, Real president Florentino Perez revealed his computer-generated vision for the island. “The sports world and Real

Madrid again demonstrate that the borders do not exist and that football is a fantastic tool to unite people,” Mr Perez said. “This is a decisive and strategic step that will enhance the strength of this institution in the Middle East and Asia, a key region in which the passion for this club has been apparent.” The project may be seen as unusual for a football club but if successful it may set a trend across the industry as clubs try to find new ways to make money. Manchester United, for example, has a range of branded restaurants across Asia. “We adhere our name and potential to a unique location, a strategic meeting place and a project of unprecedented dimension located less than four hours away by flight of 2,000 million people,” Mr Perez added. LOS CRISTIANOS looks set to be a new cruise port. President of the Port Authority, Pedro Zaragoza, Mayor of the municipality of Arona, Jose Alberto Reveron, Marketing manager of the Port Authority, Alberto Galvan and Marta Melo, Los Cristianos councillor have announced the new plans. Page 44

Mayor Reveron said, “It’s the most important event in recent times to Arona in particular, and, the entire southern region in general.” The agreement with the cruise lines will mean that as of this year, the first tourists arrive aboard the ‘Sea Cloud’ a tall ship, which will arrive at the port on the 10th , 16th and 18th November. Pedro Zaragozasiad, “negotiations are well advanced” and in April, May and September new cruisers will come to Los Cristianos. Marta Melo said that everyone has to work together to support the project.

IAG launches Iberia Express

BRITISH Airways’ parent company IAG has launched its budget carrier Iberia Express. Iberia Express will operate from Iberia’s main hub, Madrid Barajas, with flights initially to Palma de Majorca, Alicante, Malaga, and Seville. Iberia faces stiff competition

in its home market from easyJet and Ryanair. The low-cost operation launched with a fleet of four Airbus A320s, but Iberia Express should have 14 aircraft and a staff of 500 by the end of the year as it takes over an increasing proportion of the Iberia network. It plans to grow rapidly on domestic and international routes despite an unresolved

dispute with pilots. Last year’s announcement of the proposed launch triggered a series of one-day strikes by Iberia pilots. However, the pilots’ union called off the action on March 12 after the Spanish government agreed to appoint a mediator in negotiations with the airline. Iberia Express chief executive Luis Gallego said:

“The containment of costs will allow Iberia Express to grow and compete with the low-cost operators. Iberia Express will have the best of Iberia and attributes associated with the express concept.” The new airline will be managed separately from Iberia, but use Iberia’s maintenance and other facilities.

Budget rise for Air Passenger Duty FOLLOWING the increases to Air Passenger Duty (APD) rates from this weekend announced in last week’s UK budget ABTA have expressed their disappointment with the Government’s decision to go ahead with an 8% double inflation rise in APD rates from 1 April 2012.

APD rates will also increase by inflation from 1 April 2013 which is a further blow to the industry. The Chancellor expects to collect £2.2bn in 2011-12 from APD revenues, rising to £3.9bn by 2016-17, by far the highest aviation taxes in the world. Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive said: “The Chancellor’s confirmation that he intends to go ahead with double inflationary rise in APD on 1 April, together with a further increase in 2013, is incredibly disappointing. The

Government has repeatedly said it looks to travel and tourism as one of its key drivers of growth but instead of listening to concerns that APD is stunting this growth, not only in travel but in the wider economy too, it has chosen to significantly increase the tax burden.” Interestingly only five European countries levy any form of aviation tax. Of those five, Britain’s is by far the highest. Since APD was introduced here in 1994, annual revenue raised by the tax has increased by 250

per cent. This year alone, £2.6bn of holidaymakers’ and business travellers’ money will go to the Treasury and by 2015, the government has stated it will increase revenue from APD by a further £1.2bn. Tenerife is still in bracket A; APD will now be 13 pounds per traveller. The rises in APD come at a time when Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), an environmental tax on aviation, is being introduced. The government has no plans to offset the revenue raised from the ETS against APD.

ON THE ROAD WITH JAV Behind the Wheel

Email: Jav@canarianweekly.com DESPITE giving their UK range a fierce pruning, Renault know exactly in which field they excel, which is why their sports cars are as safe as houses. They have given their entire Megane range a mild facelift, with extra splashes of chrome or gloss black inside, and further mutants of the already-mutantlooking nose now with strips of daytime LEDs. These form part of the ‘F1 blade’ on the Renaultsport models, which can also have a Red Design pack with red accents on the blade, the side strakes, the rear diffuser

New Megane is gone in a flash! and the wheel rims. That’s how you might spot the latest Renaultsport Megane, but more important is that the 261bhp, restricted to the limited-run Trophy version previously, is also on tap in the regular cars, now (metrically) known as

Complete engine overhaul planned by Vauxhall-Opel

VAU X H A L L - O P E L are poised to replace their entire line-up of fourcylinder diesel and petrol engines, starting this year with a new range of direct-injection 1.6 petrol units for the Astra. The 500-million-euro investment means the engines will feature hi-tech refinements required to cut fuel consumption and CO2, such as turbo-charging, double variable-valve timing and, where necessary, balancer shafts. They will all be designed to work in hybrid applications.

Renaultsport Megane 265 Cup. It is reckoned to be the company’s fastest-ever sports model, weighing in at an impressive 158mph. As usual, there are Cup and normal versions, the latter costing an extra £1,200 (making £26,025 or 31.140 euros) and featuring squashier seats, various superfluous gadgets and softer suspension. Also, as per usual from the French company, you can have the Cup chassis on your non-Cup, the £1,350 it costs bringing you a GKN torque-biasing differential (maximum torquedifference ratio 2.3 to one). And while we’re on the facts and figures, there’s the firmer suspension with 35% stiffer front springs, slightly stiffer rear ones

and an overall 15% rise in roll stiffness. There are also red calipers for the Brembo brakes. But the key thing is the enhanced engine. You have to press the ESP button to switch it from the former 247bhp default position to the new 261bhp, simultaneously loosening the ESP strictures. Keep it pressed and all traction and stability aids are extinguished, and then the Megane 265’s true character will show through. Some cars get a bit unruly when the electronics are off, suggesting the systems have a bit of a stickingplaster role. Not so the 265. The Cup proves as friendly as a 2.0-litre hatchback, able to hit that 158mph mark. It’s the sort of car that helps

you out, waits for you to act, works with you without imposing an agenda. And it’s seriously quick! The 250 could feel curiously flat and boring to an extent, especially after the old-generation R26. But the bite and the brilliant torque spread are right back in the 265, along with the deep, granular exhaust note, overlaid with the whoosh of expelled air, plus some upshift pops and bangs for good measure. The almost-racing Recaros and the optional telemetry system also add to the drama. The regular 265 still has the same non-steering, front struts with separate hub carriers steering on an outboard axis. It’s meant to reduce torque steer, but such are the forces involved

that there’s still some gentle tugging. It’s all part of the 265’s talkative nature, which goes well with the explosive overtaking ability and the way this car rewards gentle, delicate, measured inputs. The non-Cup chassis seems to be just right for road use - firm but never harsh, ultraresponsive, always rewarding - and on dry surfaces you don’t really miss the clever differential. Either way, the Renaultsport 265 is one of the truly superb hot hatches. Even if Renault do call it a coupe. The Megane 265 Cup will set you back 29,700 euros (£24,825) and achieves 0-62mph in six seconds dead. Economy is 34.4mpg from a 4-cylinder, 1998cc petrol, turbo engine, with six-speed, manual gearbox.

By 2014, the group will be offering three, all-new, modular engine families: MGE (Mid-Size Gasoline); MGD (Mid-Size Diesel), also comprising mostly 1.6s with various outputs; and SGE (Small Gas Engine), featuring threecylinder and four-cylinder petrol engines between 1.0 and 1.4 litres. And all their ubiquitous Family Zero engines will be replaced by 2014. The emphasis for future performance cars will be on four-pot turbos with outputs up to and beyond the Astra VXRís 276bhp. The company have no plan to replace their existing V6s with new designs. They will be developed as necessary, but demand is expected to decline.

The Soccer Saturday team back in Tenerife ONE of the biggest events in the Tenerife social calendar is back for another few funfilled days. Sky Sports’ popular Soccer Saturday show returns here in May, with a golf tournament on 22nd May, followed by a ‘Gentlemen’s Evening’ the next night at Showtime, Las Americas. The latter takes the form of a rib-splitting questionand-answer session with the audience, and if last year’s unforgettable night is anything to go by, it is not to be missed. And the stars are again flying over for the event. Chris Kamara, Paul Merson and Phil Thompson all return, and this year they are being joined by Alan Kennedy, Nicky Cook plus other guests who will be unveiled soon. Kennedy, a former England international, made over 400 appearances for Newcastle and Liverpool, for whom he won a plethora of trophies. He won four League titles, four league cups, and twice won the European Cup. He is best remembered

for scoring the only goal in the 1981 European Cup final against Real Madrid. Nicky Cook, now a Tenerife resident, is a muchdecorated boxer. He is one of the few fighters to win the Grand Slam of boxing titles: the British, Commonwealth, European and World crowns. Cookie became World Super-featherweight Champion in 2008. Last year’s event was a roaring success and the sold-out boards went up weeks before the event. Chris Kamara, one of our most popular visitors, who has a holiday home here, told Canarian Weekly how much he enjoys coming to the Island. “I love bringing the lads over to Tenerife,” he said. “It’s a shame that Jeff Stelling and Charlie Nicholas cannot make it this year, but we will still have an amazing time. It will be another sell out! “Thommo and Merse cannot wait to come over, and we will have a really great few days with Alan and Cookie.” Tickets are on sale now. For golf enquiries call 667 811 592, or 669 622 622 for the Wednesday night show.

Lowe-down on handicap finals THERE have been some superb matches in the John Lowe Team Handicap competition this season, and Friday’s finals were no exception. The Trophy Final, at La Cana in Los Abrigos, saw Xtreme Sports (pictured) Bar face up to Sundowners with a mighty 180-point deficit. And, after Sundowners’ Alan took the first rubber from big Ian, it looked as though a really close match was on the cards. Xtreme soon levelled things up, and then went ahead as Daniel took a point with an excellent display against Tom. Sundowners then made it 2-3 going in to the doubles. But their need to win both legs was too much to ask, with opposing captain Mike and old hand London striking the winning darts. Palms Sports Bar hosted the Plate Final, which pitted Gaffers and The Pub together and drew a large crowd of supporters who made lots of noise! With

pulled back to set up a grand finale at 3-3 in the second doubles. More noise ensued! And then wild celebrations followed for Gaffers as Gary and Matt closed the match out. Phew, a real breath-taker!

Hot Hammers sink Hoops A HOME draw was a massive advantage in the quarter-finals of the Toddys Gold Label Cup and Plate this week. Seven of the eight home sides progressed, and none more emphatically than Tenerife Hammers A. Their match with Hoops had “classic” baked all through it. Yet the visitors had a shocker. Maybe Celtic’s defeat at Rangers on Sunday was still fresh in their minds as they never turned up. Hammers took an early lead and Hoops blew their chances Toddys Gold Label Cup Semi Finals Tenerife Hammers A vs Gaffers A Toscales A-Team vs Target Bar Toddys Gold Label Plate Semi Finals Trap Door vs Bar Tasca C&A Titans vs Summerland Superstars Matches will be played at neutral venues on April 17th Toddys Gold Label Cup Tenerife Hammers A 8-2 Hoops Toscales A-Team 7-3 Summerland Elite Target Bar 6-4 Connors Phoenix Knights 4-6 Gaffers A Toddys Gold Label Plate Tasca 9-1 Exiles A Summerland Superstars 7-3 Next Door Trap Door 7-3 Atlantis Sharks C&A Titans 7-3 Toscales Old Boys

to fightback. Only Johnny was able to take a first-set singles rubber - and when the Hammers took both doubles matches, the game was up. The Hammers will now face Gaffers A in the semifinals after Neil’s lads edged an up-and-down match at Phoenix Knights. The Los Abrigos mob were favourites going in but, like Hoops, they never performed and were soon 5-1 down. Yet they found some fight and it was game-on at 5-4. Two of the League’s big guns squared-off and it was a nervy frame as Harry looked to level against Neil. It went down to the black ball and Neil missed a pot. But the ball leapt off the cushion, travelled towards baulk, kissed the cue ball and dropped into the top pocket. It was a massive League: Division 1: Summerland Superstars 5-5 Palms A

fluke and heartache for the Knights. There was similar drama in Los Cristianos as Target Bar edged out Division Two Connors Bar. The visitors were 3-1 up, but this was pegged back as Target took both doubles frames. Dave restored Connors’ lead before the Target’s experience kicked in. Former League rep player Grant, helped by Dave and bossman Rob, got Target over the line. They will face Toscales ATeam, who claimed the scalp of another Summerland team as they beat the Elite. They were missing some key players, and it showed as the Toscales lads eased home 7-3 after winning the last four frames. Third Division C&A Titans are in the last four of the Plate after beating top-flight Toscales Old Boys. They took their solid League form into the knockout matches and were rarely in trouble. Bar Tasca enjoyed the

break from their League woes as they spanked Exiles A. Only Rob won for the visitors, and Tasca march on in a tournament they seem to like. Trap Door, who are flying at the moment, were full value for their 7-3 win over tough Atlantis Sharks, whose season is now effectively over. Finally, hat-tip to Next Door. The Division Three side were always in their contest with Division One leaders Summerland Superstars. Every frame was close and they gave the Los Cristianos chaps a decent match. There was one make-up match in Division One this week and it had a massive bearing on the title race. Defending champions Palms A should have beaten leaders Summerland Superstars. They were 4-1 and 5-4 up before having to settle for a draw. But it’s two points dropped for the Superstars, and the League will surely go down to the wire.

CD Tenerife: It’s War! Leganes 2 CD Tenerife 0

SPANISH football is nothing like British football. In Spain, we have directors of football who pick the manager and sign the players. In Spain we have play-acting, rubbish refs and no travelling fans. In Spain we have B teams, conspiracy theories and short- term thinking. In many ways, the only thing that is the same is the ball! CD Tenerife is a club in crisis; double-bubble relegation, eight managers in 22 months and now, all-out war between the playing staff and the suits. It’s fair to say the mad March Hare lives in Santa Cruz. It was only four weeks ago that Tenerife battered League leaders Real Madrid Castilla 3-1 to send out a strong message: We Are Going Up. And here we are, four frustrating weeks later, trying to decide whose side we are on. There are even fans who want Tenerife to miss out on the play-off's. How has it come to this? In many ways, the crisis started that balmy Sunday

feelings known. A frostiness had developed between the senior players and the coach, and it only got worse when bottom-placed SS Reyes arrived. The rare midweek match should have been a gimme. Tenerife started brightly but then switched off. A goal down, they chased the game but without any real zest. They got hit again and at 2-0 they accepted their fate. Tebar made changes but to no avail. The team had hit rock bottom. Or had they? Turns out that you only know what rock-bottom is once you have left it, because worse was to follow. More training-ground rows brought a desperate display last Sunday with new tableproppers Leganes. Even though Tenerife hit a bar and had a blatant penalty turned down, the hosts got the victory their effort deserved. At half-time Tebar erupted in the dressing room, leading to a senior player, one who wears gloves, to lead a vicious counter-attack. The players were not for listening and, to a man, stormed out of the dressing room. It looked as though Tebar had done a Cloughie and sent his players out early for

lunchtime when Tenerife gave Castilla a footballing lesson. The side had strained every sinew, ran through the proverbial brick wall and in Kike, a loanee, we found a player who summed up the spirit of the terraces. It was a fine win and a turning point of the season. The fans went away believing that promotion was a certainty. Unfortunately, so did the players. In training the next week, coach Andres Garcia Tebar noticed how slack they had become. “They don’t realise we have won nothing,” he even said in the press conference. Struggling Roda turned up in Santa Cruz and found a Tenerife team as flat as a pancake. After the Lord Mayor’s Show and all that. They left with a point and Tebar was left with a rocket to give his charges. This he duly did at training - a rollicking that didn’t go down well with some of the players. But it had the desired effect as Tenerife returned from Rayo B with a win and a clean sheet. They were also up to second place. But again, complacency crept into the training ground. There were a few spats and the odd back-comment. Tebar wasn't happy and made his

the second half. But, of course, we now know the truth. After the match, a furious Tebar spilled his guts to the waiting media. Pulling no punches, he said: “This is totally unacceptable. “We all know what we have to do to achieve our goals for the season. If we do not get promoted, then maybe the players should not be paid.” It was a harsh remark. It is understood that the players have been paid late this season and they didn’t appreciate the non-payment jab. Off the record, they briefed reporter friends about the total breakdown between the manager and the players. Meanwhile, sporting director Pedro Cordero was trying to take on the world and was involved in a couple of scuffles in the tunnel. For a while this week, it seemed that he

would have to have a chat with the Old Bill. Back in Tenerife, things went from bad to worse. Training brought more tension as news filtered through that Tebar would be sacked if Tenerife didn't beat Toledo this Sunday. But then a remarkable thing happened: the fans drew a line in the sand. The all-powerful fan clubs came out publicly in support of the manager. The Frente Blanquiazul said: “Given the embarrassing events that have occurred on the pitch during the last week, we wish to give our 100% backing to the management team, led by Andres Garcia Tebar. “We support the manager against the players’ high egos and lack of respect towards the loyal fans. “If it were not enough for supporters to deal with two

consecutive relegations, we now have the ‘martyrdom’ of the players in a Second Division B, which is humiliating and grotesque. “And now we have been overwhelmed by the players’ revolt against the very person that manages them. “We want to give our maximum support to the manager and his ‘disciplined’ approach, and we will not sit by, or permit them, laughing at us. “We are tired on the Island of the players ‘miming’ and they need to understand that when they come to the Island, it is to fight for the club badge.” Strong words! What happens on Sunday? Your guess is as good as mine. But something has to give. It would be a disaster if Tebar was replaced because no side can go up after having three managers in a year.

Horoscopes of the week Aries

(March 21st-April 20th) Fighting about who is in charge is not going to change anything, so stop delivering those ugly, barbed comments and work together to find a compromise so that you can all move things to the next level. Frustration over money matters won’t help, either, so lay your cards on the table over the course of the week.

TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) Although you want to help everyone and do what you can for family and friends, don’t make promises you can’t keep because you will only make a rod for your own back. Keep fantasy out of the equation and stick to the hard facts when making decisions for the long term over money and romance. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) Career talks prove disappointing over the weekend, but that’s not to say all is lost. Your confidence has certainly taken a knock, but you’re not down and out. Let others know you’re the one for the job by showing them, quietly and subtly, what they could be missing if they pass you by. CANCER (June 22ndJuly 23rd) There’s a lot going on in your life this week and you’ll want to do things at your own pace, so, when others try to speed up, you dig in your heels and rebel. Don’t burn any bridges because you know that you cannot afford to make enemies. Your dreams are giving you clear messages of what to do. So listen! LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) Ongoing fights about money at home are casting a huge, dark cloud across your life, and unless you reach a compromise and work out a way to pull together with

a partner, the consequences could be dire. Relationships are frustrating, but they are definitely worth making the effort for. VIRGO (August 24thSeptember 23rd) If you take the easy road when dealing with partners or workmates, you’ll encounter major road-blocks when you come to something more emotionallychallenging at the weekend. Don’t be afraid to wear your heart on your sleeve. Others will appreciate your honesty. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) Try not to carry grudges this week as all the negative energy and bad karma will bring you problems galore in work love and money. Step back, take a deep breath and see what you can do to help a situation instead of hindering it. Learn to control your jealousy and possessiveness. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Don’t allow the stubborn nature of others to limit you. Find another way around the issue and tackle it that way. You’ll get your own way when it matters. Keep your anger and irritation under control and refuse point-blank to play power games for anyone. Stay focused. S AG I T TA R I U S (November 23rdDecember 21st) Don’t allow a bad attitude from others

to define your day or week. Rise above it and focus your energy on finding a compatible solution for all concerned. Got someone new in your sights romantically? Take it slow, be yourself and woo them with your upbeat personality. C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) Your imagination is working overtime, but is it working overtime for better or worse? In other words, are you letting old paranoia chip away at your confidence? If you’re confused about a situation, then get your information from the horse’s mouth. Don’t presume.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) If funds are a bit low, you may feel somewhat vulnerable, but here’s a slight comfort: almost everyone is in the same boat! Maybe you just haven’t noticed. Stay focused on ambitions, hopes and dreams, but don’t be afraid to lower the bar if some aspirations seem excessively lofty. Keep it real. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Do you feel someone in your social circle is trying to manipulate you? Are you being showered with compliments and attention out of the blue? What’s going on? Get to the bottom of this and nip it in the bud because something doesn’t feel right. Don’t let anyone pull the rug from under your feet.

What better way to train your brain. Starting at the left with the number provided, work across each of these lines applying the mathematical instructions to your running total. Don´t reach for the calculator - that´s cheating! Write your final answer in the last box of the line. Aim to complete each round in about 30 seconds. Good Luck!
