Canaries President opposes Government’s 800-million-euro cuts PAULINO RIVERO, President of the Canary Islands, has vowed to act on the massive 800-millioneuro cut to public funds, announced in the National Budget. He is furious that Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has gone back on his promise not to cut spending for the “regions”. During an emergency local parliament session, Rivero said he would “take emergency measures to tackle the problem”. But he failed to offer any thoughts on how he would solve the problem. The Canary Islands will lose around 800 million euros in state hand-outs but the figure could end up being as high as one billion euros. This is around 12% of the total budget cuts for the “regions”. Rivero has been under pressure to act by opposition groups. They are concerned that he will be forced to make huge cuts to public services, and increase local taxation and IGIC. Roman Rodriguez of the NC party asked: “If there is a hole of, say, 800 million to one billion euros, how will we plug it? If taxes go up, or if we eliminate tax credits or lower the salaries of public employees to balance public accounts, how does this help the Islands?” Maria Navarro, of the powerful PGE, countered that the action taken was not the new Government’s fault. “We have an economy in crisis,” she said. “We have almost no international credit. “These harsh solutions are a result of the poisoned legacy of debt, deficit and unem-

ployment, which is not the fault of the current Government or the Popular Party.” Navarro is right. But while Rajoy and his party are not at fault, they were elected to clean up the mess. They have made some harsh decisions and have rescinded a promise to keep the local financial support for those away from the mainland. Going back on this promise is

cheeky but, some would argue, necessary. Navarro laid bare the problem in her speech, saying: “Here we are in 2012 with a massive deviation of 25 billion euros, which was hidden from the ledger by former PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and the European Union. “We are trying to clean up the public finances and honour our commitments to Eu-

rope.” This was smart politics by Navarro. There is a major fear that Spain’s books have been cooked, and real concern that any bail-out would be defaulted on. Greece, of course, has already done this twice. Locally there is a major problem. It is hard to see how Rivero will be able to change the national Government’s mind and commitment to cuts. The financial problems

of these islands are small potatoes in the grand scheme of things. And it is worth pointing out that there are other regions and municipalities who have experienced the same, and heavier, cuts. But a solution has to be found and quickly. When pushed, Rivero was unable to provide any ideas. On the record, that is understandable

as he doesn’t want to appear foolish or make wild, rash promises. But he has to find a working solution or otherwise, a local tax increase and mammoth public sector cuts, including the axing of the TF1 improvements, will have to be implemented before the summer. Soon after the Budget, Canarian Weekly met with Carlos Alonso Rodriguez, the Tenerife Cabildo Vice-President who was appointed to his post 10 months ago to see what situation Tenerife is really in. “Very difficult,” was the initial response. At the time of the meeting, Alonso was awaiting to see what budget Tenerife would actually receive. Aside from that, there is an overwhelming unemployment issue which has arisen because of the economic crisis. “Our figures have increased because people are included that were not previously,” said Alonso. “We have a section of people, approximately 100,000 of them aged between 35-50 years, with lower skill levels that we have to create jobs for.” But it’s not as easy as it sounds, because there are social issues as this sector put pressure on the services to support these people at a local level. The aim is to retrain these people, but it will not happen overnight, and budget for this is held regionally. Normally, there would be jobs created within tourism, and last year the tourism figures were good. But because of the crisis, there is a lack of credit for tourism-related businesses, which inhibits their growth and thus, job creation. It is a spiral. Continued on page 3.

We’ll make ends meet Continued from front page. This week, Tenerife Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior, and Margarita Ramos, Minister of Employment, Industry and Commerce of the Canary Islands, met to address various budget issues to which Alonso attended, together with Aurelio Abreu and Efraín Medina, the insular director of Economic Development, Trade and Employment. Top of their agenda was the current unemployment situation on the Island, the new budgetary framework, and the development of employment policies by each Autonomous Community. Alonso, has submitted to the Regional Council a proposal linked to the generation of stable employment, with a comprehensive project for the beautification of the tourist areas. This action could be undertaken at different stages, with a commitment of continuity. Job security would be given by the need to undertake proper maintenance of all these spaces. Efrain Medina stressed the importance of these agreements and the need to keep the budget, to foster employment policies. He said that the Tenerife Cabildo had an Employment Plan with over 22 projects. On the positive side, how-

ever Alonso said: “We are no worse than the whole of Spain, no matter what anyone says, and our Tourism industry is more than positive.” He alluded to the fact that the Tenerife budget would be cut, drastically, but to what degree, at the time of the meeting, was uncertain. ”Tenerife, through its autonomous nature, receives many subsidies, and that looks to be the areas that will suffer,” he said. And also areas such as air travel, which is currently highly-subsidised for residents.” In fact, the Government’s

18-26% increase in air rates, to be paid by companies operating to Tenerife to airport operators Aena for certain services, shocked Alonso. He believes that, in under six months the PP Government’s measures, which have removed subsidies, will “delete the advantages of flying to Tenerife”. The Budget includes increases in both the landing fee charged to airlines (2.5% in Tenerife South and 2.4% in Tenerife North) and passengers face a 5% rise at both airports.

Alonso added: “It is clear that conditions have tightened for both tourists and residents, which will also reduce the amount the state allocated to bonuses, despite promising to retain 50% of discounts on ticket prices.” The South Train project, which has a gap of 8 million euros, is in its first stage, and still carrying out environmental pieces of work. But anything technical has been put on hold until the 8m-euro hole can be filled. Tenerife has submitted a plan to the state requesting

the availability of credit.” He talked about the need for Tenerife not to be in a depressive circle and that, if credit conditions are eased, it will facilitate spending, promote exports etc, and thus the circle begins to move. The Vice-President added: “There are areas of spending which are unproductive, and these areas need to be reduced. You can liken it to your household expenses - why pay out on something that’s not working, or you don’t use?”

Overseas investors shun Canary Islands THE recession appears to be getting deeper and some worrying results this week will do little to ease the fears.

funding over a 30-year period, which would be sustainable. But whether it will be approved is not yet known. Energy production on the island is also funded by the state as is training and development. Alonso’s demeanour is, as you would expect for an economist, very numbersbased, but from a realist’s point of view, he said: ”There is no point punishing people because of the crisis. We need to facilitate activity, improve the red tape and improve

of Ukrainian visitors. Carlos Alonso, highlighted the importance to Tenerife “further open market in Ukraine and in general in Eastern Europe, where we have established ourselves as an exotic destination with great weather and luxury, as well as secure and stable compared to others, such as Egypt and Tunisia” The new flight will be operated by several Ukrainian

tour operators and will have an additional 180 seats per week extra to the existing flight which has been operating for three years between the capital and Island every summer. According to Carlos Alonso, the implementation of this connection shows that Ukraine “is becoming increasingly more independent from Russia, making it easier for tourists

from the country who want to come to Tenerife do so directly without stopover in Moscow.” Promotion in Ukraine is completed by Turismo de Tenerife, familiarization trips to the Isle for some of the country’s leading tour operators and media visits in order for them to know the destination and publish information on Tenerife as a holiday destination.

Foreign investment in the Canary Islands fell by over 30% in 2011 as the region struggled to attract overseas money. Eight regions in Spain saw a massive downturn and the Canaries was amongst the worse as investors looked elsewhere. According to the Ministry of Economy, the Islands received 76 million in 2011 from foreign investment, this is down from 114 million in 2010. Interestingly the figure is similar to 2009’s 77 million which was, at the time, thought to be at the low point of the current financial crisis. The majority of foreign investment in the Canary Islands is in the services sector and rising infrastructure costs are being blamed for the downturn. But the Balearics, which also relies on the

service sector, bucked the trend with an impressive 117% increase to a massive 361 million euros. The drop in revenue for the archipelago is the fifth worst in Spain. Spare a thought for the Asturias region (down 38%), Navarra (55%), Andalusia (62%) and La Rioja where investment was down an eye watering 94.5%. Extremadura, Leon and Cantabria also suffered some horrific loses. Meanwhile there is more grim news on the employment front. More than 5.6 million people are now unemployed or claiming benefits. That’s 24.5% of the working population and a massive rise on 5.273 million who were out of work in December. The worst hit areas are the Basque Country, Navarra (who are really having it bad) and Madrid where the cost of labour is higher. Official figures show that labour costs are currently 2.2% higher than last year, a figure itself which puts strain on the employment sector.

Did you have any ancestors on the stricken Titanic? This Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic which took place at 2:20 a.m. April 15th 1912, approximately 400 miles off the coast of Canada. You may think it’s morbid, but, it’s fascinating trying to piece together your family history and the website Ancestry.com is marking the anniversary by releasing the most comprehensive online collection of records relating to the passengers and crew aboard the legendary luxury liner. The collection will be available for free searching until the weekend in memory of the ship’s voyage and sinking. The Titanic Collection can be found at www.ancestry.com/ titanic, and includes thousands of Titanic-related records comprised of passenger lists, crew lists and lists of deaths at sea. These important records tell the story of more than 2,200 people that were travelling on the Titanic from Southampton, England towards New York. The Titanic collection includes various databases including two from Canada. The first collection features headstone images of 121 Titanic victims buried at Fairview Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The second, from the Nova Scotia Archives, includes 329 coroner inquest files and 330 records of bodies that were recovered by ships. RMS Titanic, Outward Passenger List, 1912, National

Archives, Surrey, England. This database contains lists of passengers that boarded the Titanic at the ports of Queenstown and Southampton. New - RMS Titanic, Deaths at Sea, 1912. This collection contains the registers of passengers who died during the sinking of the Titanic. These registers include name, age, gender, last residence, occupation, and information about the ship. New - RMS Titanic, Crew Records, 1912 These records list crew members on the Titanic; both those who died at sea and those who survived. This database also includes crew agreements, some passenger records and an official list of deceased passengers. Titanic Survivors, Carpathia Passenger List, 1912. After hearing Titanic’s distress signals, HMS Carpathia rushed to the rescue. When it arrived at the scene, the Carpathia was too late for many of Titanic’s passengers. However, it brought aboard the Titanic’s 703 survivors when it headed for New York City, the Titanic’s original destination. This database contains an index and images of the Carpathia’s passenger list. As well as a broader collection known as “Reports of Deaths of American Citizens Abroad, 1835-1975”. If anyone finds one of their ancestors I’d be interested to know. Until next week…

Currently the Foundation is leading an ambitious project that aims to make the steamboat a reference of maritime heritage.

associations have asked for individuals to be dealt with in a uniform way, so that each case receives the same attention. More than 900 cases of “stolen children” are currently being investigated, but new cases are coming to light all the time. Lawyers say the total could eventually reach 300,000. The scandal covers a period of about 40 to 50 years, beginning under the Franco dictatorship, and continuing up to the 1990s. Hundreds, or possibly thousands of children were

taken from parents judged to be morally or economically deficient and placed with approved Catholic, often childless, families. An ingrained fear of or respect for the church and the medical profession has prevented the scandal being exposed before now. Interestingly under Spanish law it is not required for the biological mother’s name on the birth certificate, which has slowed down exposure of the scandal in many cases. Under Spanish law, under-14s are not allowed to use firearms. Felipe son of the King’s eldest daughter, Princess Infanta Elena, was treated at local hospital Santa Barbara before being transferred

to a private clinic in the capital to have the wound cleaned surgically. Princess Elena spent the night at his bedside and Queen Sofia, Felipe’s grandmother, who visited him on Tuesday, said: “Kids do give you shocks, but he was playing with his mobile phone when I left.” Felipe was with his father, Jaime de Marichalar, who is divorced from his mother, when the incident happened on Monday afternoon. www.canarianweekly.com ADEJE, in conjunction with the Department of Health, directed by Rafael Dolado Garcia, has launched a new service (SAP) which is a programme of psychotherapeutic support and specialised education. The programme aims to improve quality of life, with special attention to people with chronic disorders such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, kidney dialysis patients and breast or prostate cancer. The Service is not intended to replace specialised medical services but to complement and support. It will consist of a clinical psychologist, a project coordinator, and the collaboration of the Department of Social Welfare, the local Council, acting together to improve quality of life for users of the SAP. The focus will be on psychotherapeutic support for optimisation of results, personal adjustment, family and social help, promoting physical, emotional and mental states, said the councillor. The new service will try to improve the social, economic, cultural and health situation of those affected, through the coordinated work with other areas of the Municipality of Adeje. The project involves a training phase, open to the general public on issues related to Community Health. Who can use the service? There will be two user profiles, first people with chronic conditions, and,

secondly, people with other types of psychological problems, all will receive specific advice and, if necessary, a referral to a specialised resource. Interviews will be individual and have a maximum duration of 45 minutes, rotating the group every week and establishing a personalised session every month or six weeks. Sessions

will include psychosocial support for family carers. Why a service of this scope? The project stems from a need by the population of Adeje, when over four years ago, in March 2007, they requested a response to their situation of misunderstanding and neglect by health and labour resources. Dolado Garcia explained

that “previous work with the groups of people with fibromyalgia, has been a great experience and through eminently psychological support, specific actions of bio-social character have completely changed the quality of life of these people and their families, many of which have been effectively normalised in day to day functions”

Marlins hook another Kings Cup! THE Tenerife Marlins baseball team have won the prestigious Copa del Rey after a thrilling final against CB Barcelona. The Puerto de la Cruz outfit were always in control and raced into an early 3-1 lead thanks to a double score from Nestor Perez. This was pegged back to 3-2 before the Marlins star pitcher Leslie Nacar won the match. The Catalan side needed a score to tie and a double win as they entered the ninth and final inning. They manoeuvred a man onto third base for the tying run only for Nacar to strike out the final batter!

It’s the sixth time the Marlins have won the national cup. They have had remarkable success since they were formed in 1997. They won their first Copa del Rey in 2005 and defended for four successive years. It’s hoped that last weekend’s win will be the catalyst to even more success. The Marlins won the cup the hard way. They were the only

non Catalan side to make the last four and the victory in Catalonia is being described as their best ever. And they will now ply their trade at a higher level. The Marlins will take part in the 2013 European Baseball championships. Baseball is one of the fastest growing sports in Spain. There are two major leagues and the fiercely competitive

Premier League has ten teams from all over Spain. The sport is particularly strong in the Catalan region where there are five top flight sides. To help raise the standard of the national side, teams are only allowed to use Spanish pitchers, or players who are available for the national team. This policy has seen Spain become one of the dominant forces in Europe. Recently they qualified for the Euros, which will be held in Holland, with a one hundred percent record. They also won all the matches without conceding a run! They have been losing semi finalists in three of the last four events and will hope to at least make the final in September.

‘Baby-snatch’ nun keeps mum in court SPANISH nun Sor María, at the centre of the baby-snatching scandal, refused to speak when she appeared in a Madrid court yesterday (Thursday), She is the first nun to be charged with stealing babies and falsifying documents, and her decision to remain silent was relayed to the court by her lawyer, José María Calero. As reported in last week’s Canarian weekly, she is alleged to have taken newborn babies when she considered the mothers were not capable of looking after them. It is claimed that she told the mothers their babies had died, before handing them over to families by prior arrangement. After an hour or so in court the nun, accompanied by two of her sisters, left without making a statement. Two of her possible victims

13 April - 19 April 2012

confirmed their allegations against her in court, and also against Doctor Eduardo Vela, with whom the nun is linked and who is also said to be implicated.

At the centre of the court case is the disappearance of a baby girl in March 1982 from the Santa Cristina Clinic, where Sor María was working as a social assistant.

María Cruz Rodrigo President of the SOS Stolen Babies Association, told Spanish newspaper El Mundo: “It’s an atrocity that Sor María has not declared. We want to know the truth, and for that we have the Judiciary.” She said her group were holding a vigil outside the court and hanging yellow ribbons, when three nuns came out laughing. The baby-snatch scandal is receiving widespread coverage and comment in Spain, and the victims associations met yesterday with several government officials. They included Francisco Caamano, the Minister for Justice, Alberto RuizGallardón, Minister for the Interior and Health, Attorney General Jorge FernándezDíaz and Ana Mato, the Minister for Health, Social Security and Equality. Sor María, whose real name is María Gómez Valbuena, is thought to be 80 and now lives in a Madrid convent.

The hospital patients are are kept on waiting lists HOSPITAL waiting lists in Tenerife grew by up to 40% in the last six months of 2011. The main reason was the decision to close operating theatres in the evenings to cut costs. More than 11,500 patients, spread over Our Lady of Candelaria Hospital and the Universitario de Canarias, both in Santa Cruz, waited six months for news of their operations, according to the Health Service. Overall in the Canaries, the waiting lists increased in the second half of the year, with 24,861 people standing by for news of their operations - an increase of 3,539 against the same 2010 period.

Throughout the Canaries, some 5,838 patients had a delay of more than six months before their operations, while a further 19,023 were dealt with in under six months. Lanzarote’s waiting figures rose 23.37% to 1,837 patients, Gran Canaria was up 12.13% to 4,240, and Fuerteventura increased by 9.78% to close the year at 1,245. In contrast, La Palma reduced their waiting lists by 6.11% to stand at 815 patients in need of surgery. The Canarian Government this week also announced the waiting lists for those requiring specialist treatment. There were a total of 21,751 patients waiting to be examined at the end of 2011, which was 3.41% (738) fewer than in June.

Adeje aiming to give their old folk a much better life ADEJE Town Hall is updating its services for pensioners in the municipality to improve their quality of life.

The Social Welfare Department, chaired by Amanda Trujillo Bencomo and through the Senior Care Council, led by Carmen

Rosa Gonzalez Cabrera, has reviewed the area’s Specialised Services. González Cabrera said officials were concentrating on two fronts: boosting leisure activities and also social care. On the leisure side, some 7,000 pensioners enjoy some kind of activity, enabling them to develop and function autonomously

in their own environment. Among their options are retreats, excursions, social tourism, festivals, hiking, physiotherapy, workshops and conferences.. As for social care, there is already in place a range of services and projects for the elderly, with physical or mental problems, who have to rely on others to function. Another Social Welfare

facility is its home-help service, offering support and rehabilitation for those households in need, and helping the person concerned to carry on living at home for as long as possible. This aid programme covers a wide range of tasks, including helping to maintain the affected people’s personal hygiene,

house-cleaning, preparing meals and shopping for them. Also available is a TeleAssistance service which offers technical assistance, the possibility of obtaining orthopaedic equipment, as well as guaranteeing access

to those in need of attention in emergency situations. With regard to the Service Centres and accommodation for the elderly, the council also provides information on day centres and residential centres.

I REFER to your article two weeks ago announcing the “new” plan for cruise ships coming to Los Cristianos and hailing it as “The most important event in recent times in Arona in particular, and the entire the Southern Region in general”. The powers-that-be get the credit for that, yet almost 11 years ago, I wrote to the same Authorities proposing exactly the same thing, thus bringing more economic benefits to the region. I also highlighted that such brief visits to Los Cristianos would also bring direct, long-term benefits, since such brief visits would certainly entice the people on board to come back to this place to enjoy what we have to offer. Needless to say, I did not even have the courtesy of an acknowledgement, let alone a thank-you for such a suggestion. Why is it that when ordinary people put forward a suggestion, it get brushed aside, but the same idea, later suggested by the powers-that-be, get all the acclaim? I now have a couple of other suggestions for our area. Would you please inform the Authorities concerned to put this in their future agendas for the region? I am certain it would be a great boon to the South. We, in Los Cristianos, now have a beautiful port and a lovely walkway, which is used by hundreds of visitors and residents alike every day. The Port Authority should take the initiative to locate some seating on the walkway, where people could sit and cherish the beauty of the surrounding ocean and the harbour. Secondly, I am sure it’s a tall order, but it would be worthwhile considering the creation of a walkway from beyond Arona Hotel, right around the mountain to Palm Mar. It would bring the whole area alive to new heights. Walking or cycling, circumnavigating around the mountain and joining Los Cristianos and Palm Mar and beyond would be wonderful. Los Cristianos is lovely on its own, but this would bring more beauty within everyone’s reach. Thanking you in anticipation.

Plunging car sales are threat to the industry NEW car sales in the Canary Islands last month were down by a huge 27.1%, according to the National Association of Motor Vehicle Dealers Repair and Parts (Ganvam). It was the biggest drop in the whole of Spain, above La Rioja (down 25%), Ceuta and Melilla (24.3%) and the Basque Country (21%). Valencia and the Balearic Islands were the only communities to show increased sales in March. The statistics were supplied by Ganvam President Juan Antonio Sánchez Torres, who warned that the rumours about possible tax increases in the automobile sector was a recipe for distrust. He added: “This will eventually damage revenue of more than 25,000 million euros, which contributes to the public coffers through taxes.” Sanchez Torres said the threat was particularly

unfortunate, because the industry was going through an economic crisis and a fall in consumption, which affected new car registrations. “This tax would not help to restore some normalcy and boost sales,” he stressed.

“It would discourage the purchase of cars, as would the hypothetical increase in VAT from next year. “A increase in excise duty would also add to the record prices of fuel right now. Such rates would make anyone

Dipstick diplomats! Most British envoys can’t speak the lingo where they are based IT sometimes pays to learn the language of the country in which you are working, especially if you are a British diplomat. Yet only 48 of Britain’s 1,900 envoys receive salary bonuses because they have an “extensive” grasp of the language used where they are based. Most of the others receive no extras, which suggests they cannot even handle everyday exchanges. Tory MP Stephen Barclay, a member of the Commons Public Accounts Committee, is afraid Britain could lose out on lucrative trade deals because of these language failings. There is just one UK diplomat who can speak Hindi in the Consulate in India, where the government has opted for France over Britain to supply 126 fighter jets in a £7billion deal. In North Korea, Britain has five diplomats, for whom a key role is to persuade the

regime to drop its nuclear programme. But only one can speak Korean - at beginners’ level! Mr Barclay blamed the failings in part on the decision by Gordon Brown when, as Chancellor, he closed the Foreign Office’s language school to save £1million a year. ”A lack of language skills could have cost Britain many times the savings Labour tried to make,” said the Tory MP. “It just shows how short-sighted the policy was.”

Latvia has one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe, yet there are no diplomats registered as speaking the language where they are based, in the capital city of Riga. And the list of dipstick diplomats goes on. There is just one Arabic speaker registered in each of the British embassies in Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and only one with a grasp of the local language in strife-torn Afghanistan and Pakistan. Many embassies, including those in Azerbaijan, Belarus, Cuba, Egypt, Malaysia and the Philippines, have no one proficient in the local language. The Foreign Office language school was

reopened last year by William Hague, four years after its closure under Mr Brown. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said Mr Barclay’s figures weren’t that accurate because diplomats were paid more if they actually learned the lingo while on site. Many people can speak other languages before joining the Foreign Office and, thus, do not receive the extra money. She said funding for languages had increased by 30% in the past year and added: “We are committed to strengthening the diplomatic network further, including reviving core diplomatic skills such as language learning.”

Ravaged Syria is surprisingly silent, for now

AFTER 13 months, a very fragile ceasefire has been brokered by the UN and has taken hold in Syria with regime forces apparently halting widespread attacks on the opposition. But they still defying demands by international envoy Kofi Annan to pull troops back to barracks. If the ceasefire continues

it will be the first time since Bashar Assad’s regime launched a brutal crackdown some 13 months ago on mass protests calling for his removal from power. There was doubt due to Assad’s broken promises in the past that the regime would halt its fire for long, but it initially seems to be working, however fraile, and, in infancy stages. Kofi Annan’s plan calls for the deployment of international observers and talks on a political transition once a truce is in place.

George Zimmerman charged with murder IN the US a Florida neighbourhood watch volunteer has been charged over the death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin. George Zimmerman, 28, gave himself up on Wednesday and is now in custody, according to US Authorities. Trayvon Martin’s parents said the charge was a first step towards justice but that there was “a long way to go”. Mr Zimmerman told police the youngster had attacked him, banging his head against the pavement, after Mr Zimmerman pursued him for looking suspicious and that he shot the 17-year-old on 26 February. He claimed self-defence. The Martin family claims he acted in cold blood, suspecting the high school junior because of his race and dress. US Authorities said, “Today we filed an information charging George Zimmerman with murder in the second

13 April - 19 April 2012

degree. We did not come to this decision lightly.” No bail had yet been set for Mr Zimmerman, but it is thought he will appear in court shortly. In the wake of the announcement, Trayvon Martin’s mother and father appeared alongside civil rights leader Al Sharpton to hail the charge against George Zimmerman.

“We just wanted an answer, and we got it,” Sybrina Fulton said. “A heart has no colour - it is not black, it is not white. It’s red,” she added, her voice cracking with emotion. His father, Tracy Martin, said more effort and more faith would be required from those seeking justice. After the charges against him were made public, Mr

Zimmerman’s new defence lawyer, Mark O’Mara, said his client seemed lucid, and he was “not concerned about his mental well-being right now”. Mr O’Mara said he had been appointed to the case about 90 minutes before the charges were unveiled against his client. However, Mr Zimmerman was likely to plead not guilty, Mr O’Mara said. The case highlights Florida’s controversial “stand your ground” law, which grants individuals leeway to use deadly force if they feel seriously under threat. Trayvon Martin was walking home from a local shop carrying a bag of sweets and a can of iced tea when he was approached by Mr Zimmerman. The case has become a national issue, with rallies, marches and other protests in favour of bringing a charge against Mr Zimmerman. President Barack Obama spoke out, saying that if he had a son he would probably “look like Trayvon”.

Sony shed staff

THE Japanese electronics giant Sony is set to lose 10,000 staff in a major reorganisation, according to new CEO Kazuo Hirai. The job losses represent 6% of the worldwide workforce and will come into force in the coming 12 months. Sony Corporation which was established in the post war period of 1946 employs approximately 168,000 people in a multitude of disciplines.

The reduction includes staff working in businesses that are being sold, such as its chemicals division, one of Sony’s many business interests. Although predominantly with its foundations in electronics, Sony has been struggling to compete in the television market against competitors such as Samsung and LG based in South Korea. On Tuesday, Sony forecast a record annual loss of $6.4bn (£4bn), double its previous estimate. Its share price has fallen 40% over the past 12 months.

In 2011 Sony ranked 73rd on the list of Fortune Global 500 and is regarded as one of the leading manufacturers of electronics products for the consumer and professional markets. Now Sony says it will regroup focusing its business on three areas - digital imaging, games consoles and mobile devices. It hopes the changes will help to generate sales of $10.5bn by the financial year ending in March 2015, with a profit margin of 5%. “We have heard a multitude of investor voices

calling for change. Sony will change,” said Sony CEO, Mr Hirai. It’s thought that the proposed re-focus will cost Sony in the region of $926m (£581m) during the current financial year. Sony’s television business has lost money for the past eight years. Analysts say that while it sells about 20 million TV sets a year, it is still not big enough to be profitable. Rival Japanese TV maker Sharp is also forecasting hefty losses. It expects an annual loss of $4.7bn this year.

Putting the boot into Euro 2012 AS the tourist industry gears up for Euro 2012 in June being held in Poland and the Ukraine, the President of UEFA has hit out at “bandits and crooks” due to the hike in Ukrainian hotel prices ahead of the football championships. Speaking in Lviv, one of the host cities, Michel Platini said the rising cost of accommodation worried him, and called on the authorities to prevent it. He added that some Eastern European hotels

Page 14

were not respecting room prices which had already been agreed. Borys Kolesnikov, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister has pledged to take action he said he would take appropriate measures within the next 30 days to solve the problem. “It’s annoying to have made a lot of investment and then say to people that they can’t come because there are bandits and crooks who want to make a lot of money during this Euro,” Mr Platini said. He continued, “You can’t change (the price of a room) from 40 euros (£33; $52) to 100 and then up to 500 just like that, from one day to the other, this just is not done.”

A few drinks can clear the mind MEN who enjoy a drink are actually better at solving brain-teasers than those who are perfectly sober. Not only did the boozy blokes get more questions right, but they were also quicker to dish up the answers. A study by University of Illinois psychologists revealed that alcohol hinders analytical thinking and allows the flow of creative thoughts which might otherwise be stifled The amount of alcohol required for the equation was around four units, which is about two pints of beer or two medium glasses of wine. The psychologists set 40 healthy young men a series of brain-teasers. They were each given three words, such as coin, quick and spoon, and they had to come up with a fourth word linking all three (“silver”). Half the men downed the equivalent of two pints of

beer before doing the tests, while the rest stayed dry.. The drinkers solved nearly 40% more problems than the others, taking an average of 12 seconds per question, compared with the 15.5secs required by the non-drinkers. The researchers wrote in the journal Consciousness and Cognition: “The current research represents the first demonstration of alcohol’s effect on creative problem solving.’ Co-author Jennifer Wiley added: “We tested what happens when people are slightly merry, and not when people drink to extremes. “The bottom line, we think, is that being too focused can blind you to novel possibilities, and a broader, more flexible state of attention is needed for creative solutions to emerge.” University of Hertfordshire psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman said: “It is an interesting idea and does make sense. But a good night’s sleep is likely to be just as beneficial.”

Waugh and peace as Nigella auctions a chum’s book on eBay! A SIGNED book given to wealthy Nigella Lawson by a pal has been sold on eBay. Yet the celebrity chef and her husband, worth some £128million between them sold their lavish London apartment for an incredible £21.million profit and recently bought a home in Chelsea for £12m. Writer Sophia Waugh, granddaughter of Brideshead Revisited author Evelyn, gave the game away on Twitter, claiming that a book she had given to Nigella was purchased by another friend of hers through the auction website. The 49-year-old wrote on Twitter: ‘This is complicated. But worth it. So I give a copy of my novel to a friend. Let’s call her Nigella. “Another friend notices a gap in my backlist on her own shelf. Turns to eBay. Buys book. Happens to be a mutual friend of - say - Nigella.” She added: “Book arrives signed from me to say Nigella. Didn’t realise there

were troubled times. Tears of joy/laughter from us. Caught out.” And to make sure there was no doubt who the book was meant for originally, she wrote: “If there is further trouble, we are both happy to send a tenner to, let’s say, @NigellaLawson. Old friends and all.” The newly-slimline 52-yearold acknowledged the message, tweeting: “Hello!”

The announcement was made by Prime Minister David Cameron and Nissan chief operating officer Toshiyuki Shiga, during their visit to the company’s Yokohama headquarters on Tuesday. Cameron said: “It is proof of the strength and vitality of the British manufacturing industry that leading companies like Nissan are expanding their production in the UK.”

Oh yes, he also met Sir Richard Branson, one of world’s the great entrepeneurs, and published a book about “selling” his whole life, called A Life Sold. Of his experiences, he said: ‘A couple of stand-out ones were swimming with a mother humpback whale and her calf in Japan, and riding a motorbike on the Wall of Death. “My week in Pamplona in Spain was fantastic, and

It is no surprise that Hollywood showed more than an interest in his story, which has been publicised worldwide, and Disney has now bought the rights to his astonishing story. Any regrets? “Not for a second,” said. “It has been the most incredible adventure, and exactly what I was after. Can you help Aaron? AARON Bannister is a lively, inquisitive six year old, he was born here in the Canaries and lives in Los Abrigos with his mum and dad, Gwen and Carl, plus his four sisters. He goes to Spanish school CEIP Los Abrigos, his favourite class is Spanish, he loves football, swimming, Sponge Bob and Peppa Pig.

By this point you’re think “so” well young Aaron and his family need help, this bubbly little six year old has just been diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Help is needed to fundraise but also more importantly some emotional support for Carl and Gwen. They told Canarian Weekly, “Now we would like to find another family here in Tenerife or the Canaries that is going through what we’re going through so we can offer each other help and support. For ages I knew something wasn’t quite right, don’t let anyone shoo you away.” Gwen had to fight to have the appropriate tests for Aaron and some she paid for to speed up the process. But now receives expert care from specialist Dr. Duque in the north. There are many different types of muscular dystrophy. Different conditions affect different muscles. The

severity of conditions and how they affect individuals varies greatly from person to person. Most conditions are progressive, causing the muscles to gradually weaken over time. Mobility is affected and most conditions lead to some sort of disability. Conditions can be inherited or occur, as in this case, out of the blue where there is no family history. In some cases, the condition is inherited from the mother who is a carrier but it can also be caused by a new mutation in the child’s genes. Aaron’s sisters have been tested and Cassie, Penny and Carla are clear but 7 year-old Kitty is awaiting diagnosis as she may be a carrier. About 100 boys with Duchenne muscular

dystrophy are born in the UK each year. There are about 2,500 known boys with the disorder living in the UK, it’s very rare. It’s called Duchenne’s because a French neurologist Guillaume Duchenne gave a comprehensive account in medical journals of thirteen boys with the most common and severe form of the disease back in 1890. Symptoms usually appear in male children before age 5 and may be visible in early infancy. Progressive proximal muscle weakness of the legs and pelvis associated with a loss of muscle mass is observed first. Eventually this weakness spreads to the arms, neck, and other areas. Aaron is currently showing classic symptoms including

low endurance, difficulties in standing at times unaided, inability to ascend staircases at times. Gwen and her son have recently returned from the UK, where during their visit he was taken ill, as a result Alderhay Hospital have offered a free consultation. In later years Aaron’s mobility will be severely affected and as to the future the prognosis is not necessarily good. Despite this Aaron’s family who have lived here in Tenerife for 10 years remain totally positive organizing lots of fundraising; to date they’ve raised over 6,000 euros with the help of La Cana in Los Abrigos and the help of a whole host of other supporters. Gwen said, “I’d like to thank everyone for their help it’s been absolutely brilliant.” If you can help Aaron in any shape or form then contact can be made through La Cana in Los Abrigos or through Aaron’s Facebook page - Aaron Tyler Bannister Duchense Muscular Distrophy Foundation. Refuge doggies strut their stuff on parade at Easter!

EASTER Sunday’s fund-raising event was a great success, with the sun shining down on the refuge after the previous day’s deluge. People of all ages entered in the fun, with many of the “inmates” wagging their tails in glee and joining in the races. They all enjoyed the extra attention and perhaps one or two dogs may even have found new homes after the day’s events. It was good to see many new faces at the refuge, and lots of previously-adopted dogs also came back to give their support with their new owners. Many thanks to Andrea Scheithe, from Atletismo Arona, for all her help and support in organising the event, in conjunction with the staff at Accion del Sol. The children had great fun hunting Easter Eggs, playing

with the puppies, joining in the races, having their faces painted and also “showjumping” with the dogs. Marion Gonzales, who runs the refuge, said a big “thank-you to everyone who supported the event, and for their ongoing commitment to the dogs’ welfare here in Tenerife. The refuge still has around 180 gorgeous dogs looking for loving homes. They would even welcome a walk down to the beach if adoption is to big a responsibility, so come on over to the refuge and make a few dogs happy. They love a walk and some special attention from the outside. 922 778 630 for more information. His first guest is William Roache, who has played Coronation Street's Ken Barlow since the very first episode of the soap in December 1960, making him the world's longest-serving soap actor. As William prepares to celebrate his 80th birthday, he lifts the lid on his womanising, drinking and the court case that made him bankrupt. He also talks about the tragic death of his baby daughter Edwina and the sudden death of his second wife Sara. He gives the inside track on some of Corrie's most famous storylines and reveals why, when over 8,000 other actors have come and gone over the last 50 years, he is still the king of Coronation Street.

Undercover Boss USA Channel 4, 11:00 Rick Silva became CEO of Checkers and Rally's fast food restaurants five years ago. His immediate focus was to grow the business and get Checkers and Rally's on the same level as Wendy's and McDonald's. Rick hopes his time working undercover in his own organisation will help him find more ways to drive sales and please his customers. While undercover, Rick discovers a restaurant that is doing everything wrong, from food preparation to management and training, forcing him to shut down the location. He continues his journey fearing the entire Checkers and Rally's system may be broken. Rick finds that he does have some great management in place, but the company is still failing to respect the employees in other ways. Crew members and managers feel that they are not being paid fair wages and their ideas for improvements are being ignored.

This World - Norway’s Massacre

18:50 ...... BBC London News

BBC 2, 9pm

20:00 ...Antiques Roadshow

In July 2011 Norway suffered the worst attack by a terrorist acting alone in the history of the world. Yet Anders Breivik was not an Al-Qaeda sympathiser: he was an ethnic Norwegian from the affluent side of Oslo. This World traces the story of the attacks. Combining powerful eyewitness testimony, unique footage, unseen archive and interviews with those involved -including the Norwegian Prime Minister - the programme makers offer new insights into the life and mind of Breivik, exposing the hidden hatreds that drove him. The documentary pieces together the course of the attacks, revealing the delays that gave Breivik time to continue his massacre. As witnesses raise questions about the police response, those in charge, including the leader of the team who arrested Breivik, speak to the programme. This World also seeks to explore Breivik’s motivation, including analysis of his manifesto, as his lawyer and psychiatrists reveal chilling details about his behaviour. While many feel he is insane, psychiatrist Dr Randi Rosenqvist presents a different assessment: “The view that Muslims should leave Norway has nothing to do with psychosis.” But some hope the massacre can be the spark for a better society. Tonje Brenna, a leader of the Labour Party youth wing targeted by Breivik, says: “I have never been more certain that the fight we fight for a more tolerant and just society is important. I have never been so convinced that politics is as important as it is now.”

Three-part observational documentary series shot at the Royal Military Academy over the course of a year. It follows the journey of one intake of cadets, both male and female, through the 200-year-old institution three gruelling terms that turn them from civilians into officers. Tensions mount amongst the officer cadets. With the end in sight but the prospect of being 'back termed' ever present, the stakes go up each week. The academy's image as a bastion of old school tie and privilege comes under the spotlight as the unrelenting pace tests each individual's abilities physical, mental and emotional against the standards of becoming a British officer in the regiments and corps they have applied to join. For some, keeping up proves impossible - but for others the Sandhurst dream is about to become a reality.

The Last Exorcism Channel 4, 22:00 Daniel Stamm's documentary-style horror presents the spine-chilling footage shot by filmmaker Iris Reisen and her cameraman following the Reverend Cotton Marcus. Marcus is a Louisiana evangelist famed for his ability to drive demons from the possessed. However, aside from the mental respite he brings the afflicted, he has become disillusioned with the process, seeing his own 'skills' as little more than well-meaning tricks. Already on the verge of ending this work, he is easily persuaded to collaborate with Reisen on a film that is designed to reveal that exorcism has nothing at all to do with divine intervention. And, when he is asked to help Nell, a troubled teenager who intermittently appears to host violent forces which mutilate the local livestock, they think they have the perfect case for his final exorcism. The 70s: 1970-1972 BBC2, 9pm Historian and self-confessed 70s enthusiast Dominic Sandbrook takes a radical look at a decade which he claims shaped the Britain of today. The early years of the 70s were marked by aspiration and ambition, as a newly affluent nation reached for greater material reward - with profound implications for politics, the economy and society as a whole. As mortgage availability increased, millions stepped on the property ladder, swapping city terraces for airy suburban new-builds and fuelling a massive housing boom. According to Dominic it was this new materialism which blurred class barriers, creating a society that would embrace the ideals that eventually Thatcherism would embody: “We think that Margaret Thatcher created this, but they created her.” A critical moment in shaping new Britain was PM Ted Heath’s conviction that Britain should be a part of Europe. This was combined with the new wave in foreign travel, as millions of tourists soaked up the sun in the Spanish Costas returning with a taste of Europe and an enthusiasm for wine drinking. The arrival of thousands of Ugandan Asians in 1972 tested the tolerance of the nation. Dominic compares the hostility of the anti-immigration lobby to the welcome that was offered to these immigrants in some provincial towns. Culturally, the 70s saw an onslaught of a different kind for the traditional male, as youth embraced the flamboyance of Marc Bolan and David Bowie’s provocative assertions of bisexuality. This sowed a seed of sexual tolerance as well as a greater assertiveness of gay identity, Dominic argues.

W C CHOICE The Graham Norton Show BBC1, 23:35

The award-winning host continues his anarchic talk show. Expect the unexpected as top celebrity guests join in the fun with Graham and his irrepressible audience. Among the guests on Graham's sofa are Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, who is returning to the West End in Big and Small; Hollywood star Ewan McGregor, promoting new film Salmon Fishing in the Yemen; actor Michael Sheen, talking about playing Jesus in The Gospel of Us; Little Britain star Matt Lucas who introduces his new show The Matt Lucas Awards; and Keane, performing Silenced by the Night.

Inside Nature's Giants Channel 4, 20:00 The BAFTA Award-winning team travel to Australia's red centre to dissect the continent's most iconic animal: the kangaroo. The vast Outback is home to millions of these bounding giants some stand two metres tall - but, sadly, every year thousands are fatally injured in traffic accidents. Veterinary scientist Mark Evans and comparative anatomist Joy Reidenberg take the opportunity to delve inside these bizarre animals. They uncover the kangaroo's lower jaw, which splits in two, and a massive Achilles tendon that enables it to hop like a frog. But it's the reproductive anatomy they find most surprising: the male genitalia is back to front, while females have three vaginas as well as the pouch in which they grow their young from jelly bean-sized embryos.

'Don’t stop Are you looking for a great night out, with a show, meal, drinks, that’s great value for money but not sure what to do? Then the Sound of Musicals is the answer; celebrating its fourth year with a new look show, you’ll be smiling with ‘Glee’ as the live show entertains you, bringing the best of London’s West End and the magic of Broadway to life on stage here in Tenerife.

Page 28

The essence of the original successful show which began way back in October 2009, at Showtime, Karting Las Americas, is still the love story between Tony and Maria taking the show through, plus light hearted comedy and show stopping musical renditions. The previous ‘Have the time of your life’ show underwent only minor changes over its three year run. But now it has triumphantly moved up a gear with new production, sparkling costumes, and even more recognisable new numbers, it all melds together for a stunning night out. If you visited Show Time the Sound of Musicals at Karting Las Americas a

while ago you will notice massive changes to the venue and visual effects. The Sound of Musicals is a 100% live show energetic, funny, entertaining and appeals to all ages. No doubt one of the reasons the show is a success is because of its cast who perform all of their numbers – live. The show bounds along

with endless energy and enthusiasm - the mixture of West End hits, dancing grannies (don’t ask!), Vegas style show girl routines, with over 15 musical hits, some original classics and others which are bang up to date, are all cleverly integrated into the story. The songs are infectiously memorable from the off with the West Side Story number

and Lullaby of Broadway chorus, with ‘Producer’ Max, agent extraordinaire, bringing the cast back together after 5 years for a brand new Sound of Musicals worldwide tour. The talented cast of six individually all have great stage presence and superb voices; in addition their comic performances will have you in stitches. You’ll

“Took all the family when they came over, ticks all the boxes” Malcolm Watts, Los Cristianos

be smiling with ‘Glee’ by the end of it. Chris Elkington, Producer & Director, Sound of Musicals, told Canarian Weekly, “We decided to freshen up the show to bring it bang up to date, after all we have show goers that visit time after time, we wanted to give them something memorable, and it’s simply stunning” The Sound of Musicals is a Tenerife hit, voted as Thomson’s Top Night Out in 2011. If you’ve not been go along and see the new show you won’t be disappointed, its success rolls on and on, and deservedly so.

Keep Fit. Lord Sugar turns the candidates' attentions towards the highly profitable keep fit industry. The teams have two days to devise and brand a new fitness class that reflects recent popular trends like Zumba or Body Pump, which attract gym members to classes in big numbers. They must then pitch their routines to leading health and fitness chains, who will pay for the rights to run them if they like what they see. With advice from a fitness expert who is impressed with the concept, one team opts for street dance merged with martial arts in the hope it will win them big orders. The other team turn back the clock; inspired by a 1980s dance troupe they adopt a strictly retro style, incorporating hula hoops and space-hoppers. On day two both teams direct a promotional video to showcase their efforts, but theatrical temperament takes centre stage and there are fights, frustrations and a failure to follow the script.

Instant Restaurant BBC2, 13:30 Two amateur cooks go head to head to see if they have got what it takes to create a restaurant in their own homes for one night only, and make a profit. Presented by Nadia Sawalha. It's a Chinese-tasting menu versus British with a Malaysian twist as two amateur cooks from Bristol see if they have got what it takes. Edgar Thoemmes wants his Szechuan menu to be as authentic as possible, while Kim Willis is hoping her Malaysian flavours will do the trick.

9/11: The Lost Tapes Channel 4, 21:00 For the first time British audiences will hear newly released audio recordings which offer a unique insight and moving perspective on 9/11 and the fateful minutes that changed America forever. On the morning of the attacks, hundreds of hours of military and air traffic control conversations were captured on tape painting a chilling and tragic picture of events spiralling inexorably out of control. With events unfolding at breakneck-speed, the tapes reveal in minute-byminute detail, the chaos and confusion wrought by the attacks. Revelations include how Air Force fighter jets, scrambled to protect Washington, set out in the wrong direction - ending up 60 miles out across the Atlantic ocean and that permission to shoot down hijacked passenger planes only came through after the last plane crashed.

Scrimp-and-save ideas National Gardening Week here Buy own brand labels Buy value range; own brand or no frills that type of thing. Often a lot cheaper than household brand names. Home cleaning Don’t splash out on expensive cleaning products.

Bicarbonate of soda, lemon juice and vinegar work wonders as natural cleaners.

Recharge, Reuse, Recycle We’ve turned into a disposable nation; if it’s broke, dirty etc just buy a new one. Well this can’t contin-

ue. Don’t buy kitchen roll use cloths; use rechargeable batteries; don’t pay for plastic bags at the supermarket, take your own trolley/bags. Buy cheap, pay twice You basically get what you pay for. For example, if you

buy a cheap sofa, don’t expect it to last that long. Old wives tales Two of the funniest ‘scrimper’ ideas I’ve seen this week are using a banana skin to clean silver and if you have smelly shoes, put cat litter in them overnight instead.

Consumers open to rip-offs and scams WHICH? is warning that consumers will be left vulnerable to rip-offs and scams due to ill-conceived and underresourced changes announced by the Government. The Deputy Prime Minister has announced help for hard-pressed energy consumers, Consumer Minister Norman Lamb has announced proposals that abolish the consumer energy watchdog, Consumer Focus to pile more pressure on already over-stretched and underresourced local trading standards officers and Citizens Advice service. Under changes announced as part of the Government’s Consumer Landscape Review, local trading standards, more used to tackling street markets and rogue plumbers, will be required to do the majority of consumer law enforcement work and will be expected take on powerful national and international companies, putting considerable extra strain on local authority Trading Standards services at a time when councils are slashing their budgets and trading standards officers are being made redundant across the country. This chaotic and costly

THIS week in the UK sees the first-ever National Gardening Week, its objective is to get the nation growing.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) hopes its plans will help trigger ideas and grow momentum to engage

Seed mats THIS WEEK I was having a conversation about planting and someone mentioned to me that their herb seed mats were sprouting, I didn’t have a clue what they were talking about. In the UK (I’ve not seen them here, but I’ve not looked) they sell seed mats and seed tapes, enabling you to grow your own, even

reorganisation will see the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), which recently had success taking on the budget airlines over ‘rip-off’ card surcharges, downgraded and merged with the Competition Commission. The government claims that the new quango, the National Trading Standards Board, is to receive “increased funding of £10.5m” for its work however this is money is simply redirected current OFT enforcement money. The National Audit Office report found that enforcement spending is set to fall from the current £247m, to around £140m by 2014. The government-funded watchdog, Consumer Focus, is also to be scrapped and its work challenging the government, powerful

regulators like Ofgem and big businesses on behalf of consumers, will be handed over to the Citizens Advice which is already struggling to cope with the growing numbers of people seeking help on welfare benefits, housing and immigration problems. Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith, says: “This is a shockingly ill-conceived and underresourced plan from the Government that looks set to vandalise a system of consumer protection that is admired worldwide at a time when people most need protection. “Today the Government is giving with one hand and taking with the other. They seem intent on wasting millions of taxpayer pounds restructuring quangos and piling pressure on

those who are already overstretched on the frontline. Giving OFT responsibilities to local Trading Standards officers and the Citizens Advice is like asking GPs to carry out heart surgery. “The Government knows that failing to enforce consumer law already costs the British public over £6bn a year but they seem determined to abandon consumers to increasingly sophisticated rip offs despite the harm this does to the economy. “The new Consumer Minister, Norman Lamb, has clearly been sold some dodgy advice himself. Rather than focusing on costly reorganisations, we want to see real action to show the Minister is taking his new role of protecting the nation’s consumers seriously.”

more schools, communities, gardeners, organisations and the garden trade to support the week and more importantly generate interest in gardening. Just because we’re here doen’t mean we need to miss out, the themes and ideas can be found on their website. www.rhs.org.uk/ nationalgardeningweek

easier. Growing from seed at times is difficult, especially handling the seeds. At time you have hundreds in a pack and may only want a few – you get the picture. Then when they grow you need to thin them out and waste lots. Well help is at hand. Seed tapes and mats contain prespaced seeds in a tape. Just prepare the soil, place the tape or mat. Cover with soil and wait for them to emerge. If anyone finds them here in Tenerife to purchase please let me know.

Spring clean SPRING is the traditional time to spring clean, but where do you start. Canarian Weekly has chosen a few items/areas that will benefit you in the coming months. Patio time Most of us here benefit from a terrace/patio which by regular sweeping can be kept neat and tidy. But don’t forget, remove any weeds growing between or at the edge of the stones. A high pressure washer does a brilliant job in cleaning. Or if you want the exercise a household detergent and a scrubbing brush will do just as good. BBQ

Before you use your BBQ wipe it down with cooking oil, this will help stop the food sticking. Once you and your friends and family have enjoyed the BBQ delights clean it whilst still warm. Scrub off bits of food with scrunched up foil, wash in hot soapy water. Outside kids toys Cleaning climbing frames, swings etc take a little time. Clean with soapy water add some sterilizing liquid, such as Milton to make sure the items are spotlessly clean. Look out for rust on metal structures, sand back and treat with the appropriate primer and paint.

from Robot, answers your hair questions

Go with the flow… TIRED of leaving the salon looking like a superstar, only to find the next day that you look as though you’d never been? Fed up with spending hours trying to recreate that salon look and failing every time? You need to re invent your look, because it’s no use spending good money on having your hair done if it looks good for one day only! Why should it when it could look good always, no matter how bad you are at styling your own hair? It is all down to the cut, so get a good cut and your hair will do itself, but get a bad one and your going to be spending a few more hours a week trying to make it look good. I have many clients who get compliments about their hair right up to the day they come back to have it cut again. It’s all about following the line of the hair, and not trying to get it to do something it won’t. For example, you can’t force someone’s hair into a full fringe if you’re trying to deal with a kiss curl at the hairline. Just go with the flow and the hair will always fall into place, regardless of its condition or other elements, such as wind or rain. When hair is cut well, it should be so easy to make it look fantastic, so forget about shoving it in a ponytail 24-7. If it is

Page 40

cut well, it will look good no matter what. I recently had a new client who spent over an hour styling her hair every two days! She’d never had a precision cut. She had enough hair for three people and couldn’t understand why no one had told her that she had other options for styling her hair. The lady told me it looked good on the day of her cutand that was it until the next haircut, some three months later. WHY? Her hair has now been thinned-out, layered and given a more flattering form around her face. She now takes just 20 minutes to style it every two days, and that is all down

to giving her a cut that falls into shape. It not only looks 10 times better but also takes a few years away as well! You can’t put a price on a good haircut. If it works for you, then it’s worth every cent. But don’t think there is a cheap and easy way to create these looks. You need a stylist who spends time on your hair - not a few snips here and there and then you’re out of the salon. Having your hair cut well is an experience which shouldn’t be looked upon as a chore, like visiting the dentist. After all, there’s no pain involved in finding your perfect style!

NHS charges increase right across England THE COST of a NHS prescription and dental treatment has risen in England this month. The cost of a basic NHS prescriptions in England has risen by 25p to £7.65. Charges for basic dental treatment have risen 50p to £17.50, with rises of up to £5 for more complicated work. Doctors’ leaders say the current system is unfair

and needs to be reformed in England. Interestingly as England receives further increase those living in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland pay nothing as charges have already been scrapped. But the cost of a prescription payment certificate (PPC), which is valid for three months, will remain at £29.10 and the price of an annual PPC will be held at £104. Mr Burns said: “PPCs offer savings for those needing

four or more items in three months or 14 or more items in one year.” In addition charges for items such as elastic stockings, tights, wigs and fabric supports supplied by hospitals have also increased. A BMA spokesperson said that the current system needs reforming. “It’s unfair for patients as whether you pay depends not only on what part of the UK you live in, but also on what kind of condition you have. “The bureaucracy to administer the charging and exemption regime is also cumbersome and costly. The BMA believes it would be best to abolish prescription charges in England altogether.” If you’re lucky enough to receive NHS dental treatment thos has also significantly increased. The dental charge payable for a “band 1” course of treatment - examination, diagnosis and advice, includes X-rays, a scale and polish and planning for further work if necessary is now £17.50.

The slim chance for toddlers who watch too much television

KINDERGARTENS should ban television-watching for toddlers and focus on “fun activities” to prevent them getting fat. Parents should also cut down on pre-school televisionwatching in bedrooms and unhealthy snacks in the fridge, according to an EU-funded survey into obesity prevention for four-to-six-year-olds. A Greek professor leading a research project as part of a four-year study said. Computer games should be restricted amid growing evidence that more youngsters have weight problems before they get to school age. The ‘ToyBox’ survey, the first phase of an investigation into how best to resolve the problem, reveals that obesity among European pre-schoolers is hitting record levels, with more than one in eight children overweight in northern Europe - rising to more than 25% in parts of southern Europe. Nearly 40% of pre-school girls in Spain are now classified as overweight or obese. ToyBox co-ordinator Yannis Manios, assistant professor at Harokopio University, Athens,

said:“We need a new approach to prevent obesity.” The study, involving research in Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and the UK, showed the need for better health-promoting policies targeted at youngsters. Prof Manios added: “We found that many countries are lacking clear guidelines on healthy eating and active play. However, there is good evidence linking sedentary behaviour, such as TV watching, with subsequent obesity. “Therefore, TV watching in kindergartens should be replaced by more active, noncompetitive, fun activities which will promote the participation of the whole class and help children to achieve optimal growth, health and well-being. Similarly at home, TVs in the bedroom and unhealthy snacks in the kitchen cupboard are a bad idea. “Parents should also remember that their role is not only to provide healthy food and drink options, but also to act as a role model themselves, since kids are copying their behaviour.”

Babies’ fighting chance! MORE than half of the babies born in the UK will be screened for five rare, inherited illnesses as a result of a year-long NHS pilot scheme running from July. An anticipated 430,000 will be checked out for the disorders using a blood sample already taken from new-borns. Every baby born in the UK, around 700,000 each year, is currently tested for rare, inherited genetic disorders, including cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anaemia. And some 1,000 of them are diagnosed with a disorder as

the result of this screening. It will test the same blood sample, taken from a small prick on the baby’s heel during its first week, for five additional conditions: maple syrup urine disease, homocystinuria and three types of acidaemia. Maple syrup urine disease: This is an ailment which prevents the digestion of some proteins, and is found in one in 120,000 births. It can cause the sufferer’s urine to smell of maple syrup and, if undiagnosed, may become life-threatening. Homocystinuria: Inhibits the body’s metabolism of the amino acid methionine. It affects one in 100,000 births and can lead to visual problems, deformities of the chest and spine, low IQ and

mental disorders. There is no known cure, although around half of patients respond well to high doses of vitamin B. Glutaric acidaemia type 1: Isovaleric acidaemia and long-chain fatty acidaemia are metabolic conditions which each affect one in 100,000 children. This pilot scheme will run in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and some areas in London from July. The scheme is being funded by the National Institutes of Health Research, which is providing £600,000 to

researchers based at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. The results of the trial will be evaluated after a year by the UK National Screening Committee (NSC). Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for England, said: “This is a fantastic step forward for the new-born screening programme, and it shows the NHS at the cutting edge. “This pilot will identify more babies with serious conditions, giving them the chance to live a long, healthy life.”

Womb-cancer horror for those who have piled on the pounds A DRAMATIC rise in the number of women diagnosed with womb cancer means deaths have risen by almost 20% in the past decade. Obesity is a key driver behind the increase in diagnoses, at least doubling the risk of the disease, according to experts. Incidence of womb cancer has risen 43% since the mid1990s, from 13.7 to 19.6 per 100,000 women in the UK. Before this point, the chance of developing womb cancer had been constant for at least 25 years, and death rates had been declining, according to Cancer Research UK. But since the late Nineties, the death rate has risen

13 April - 19 April 2012

from 3.1 to 3.7 per 100,000 in the UK. This means more than 1,900 women annually are now dying from the disease, compared with fewer than 1,500 at the turn of the millennium. Nevertheless, overall survival rates are improving, with 77% of women now surviving for five years or more, against the 61% of women diagnosed between 1971 and 1975. Professor Jonathan Ledermann, Cancer Research UK’s gynaecological cancer expert, said: “It is hugely troubling that more women are dying from womb cancer, but we shouldn’t let this cloud the fact that the chances of surviving the disease are still better than ever. “It is clear that we’re making great progress, but we do not yet fully understand what is driving

up cases of womb cancer, so there is still lots more to do.” Sara Hiom, director of information at Cancer Research UK, said: “Despite survival rates continuing to improve, these worrying figures show more women are still dying from womb cancer. Maintaining a healthy body weight can halve a woman’s risk of womb cancer and is one of the best ways to protect against the disease.” Sharon Robinson, a 56-year-old womb-cancer survivor from London, said: “When I first had bleeding I thought it might be something to do with the menopause, but then it became more serious and I went to my doctor.” She stressed: “It is so important that women who have symptoms

like bleeding after the menopause go to their doctor without delay, because spotting cancer early save lives.”

A slice of life! THIS week coming is National Bread Week in the UK, now in its 11th year. The objective of the awareness week is to celebrate the use of bread in our daily diet from a nutritional point of view. Did you know? • Bread remains one of the UK’s favourite foods, with 99% of households buying bread and the equivalent of nearly 12 million loaves are sold each day. (source: Federation of Bakers). White bread accounts for 76% of the bread sold in the UK (source: DEFRA family food survey 2008). • Over 200 different kinds of bread are produced in the UK - from butter rich brioche and crisp baguettes to farmhouse loaves and focaccia, soft ciabatta and crumpets to chapattis and flaky croissants. This diversity is only possible because of the vast range and quality of British flour available. • Not so long ago, bakers were encouraged to look abroad for quality flour. Now,

the flour they use to create the chewy crusts and richly flavoured crumb of our finest breads is British. Every year in the UK, millers produce over 4.4 million tonnes of some of the best flour in Europe and 85% is milled from wheat grown in the UK (source DEFRA/nabim). Home grown grains, blended with small amounts of imported wheat, and the unsurpassed skill and efficiency of our millers, means that Britain is consistently producing exceptional flours. • Each year 99 bread products are purchased per household (Source: TNS Superpanel, November 2009). • Men eat bread more frequently than women: 44% of men eat bread twice a day compared with 25% of women (Source: Bread consumption in the British population: analysis of the National Diet and Nutrition Surveys (Young people, 4-18 years, 1997 and Adults, 19-

64 years, 2000-1). Summary report developed by the MRC Human Nutrition Research, June 2007) • The bakery sector has sales of £5bn. (Source: TNS November 2009) • 76% of the bread we eat is white and sandwiches account for up to 50% of this consumption. (Source: DEFRA family food survey 2008.) • Large bakeries, which produce wrapped and sliced bread, account for 80% of UK bread production. In store bakeries produce about 17% of bread, with the remainder accounted for by high street bakeries (source: Federation of Bakers.) 80% of bread is wrapped and sliced - for convenience, for keeping qualities and value for money. • Bread provides carbohydrates, B vitamins, protein and calcium. White flour is fortified with calcium, iron, thiamin and niacin • Cereal and cereal products are an important source

of calcium in the diet contributing 30% to the mean intake of calcium. Over one third of the contribution from cereals and cereal products comes from white bread (National Diet and Nutrition Survey). Four medium slices of white bread (140g) provides 248mg calcium which is 31% of the Recommended Daily Amount (source: McCance and Widdowson) • Bread is also one of the nation’s main sources of dietary fibre. Four slices of wholemeal bread would provide 7g fibre (Englyst fibre) which is 39% of the Recommend Daily Amount for an adult. • Average bread purchases are the equivalent of 43 loaves per person per year (source: DEFRA family food survey) • Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented the first slice-andwrap bread machine in 1928. He sold his pre-sliced, wrapped bread in a bakery at Battle Creek, Michigan. By 1933 80% of all bread sold in the US was sliced and wrapped the phrase ‘the best thing since sliced bread’ was coined. • Sliced bread was introduced into the UK in the mid 1930’s. out for the chance to cook a glittering Olympic Banquet. The chefs’ task is to create a menu that captures the Olympic spirit - food that is

both breathtaking and aweinspiring. Twenty four of the finest chefs in the country will compete in eight regional heats for the opportunity to create a world-beating four course menu at a prestigious event at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, hosted by British Olympic legend Sir Steve Redgrave with a glittering guest list of British sporting greats. Monday kicks off with the starters - but which one

is going to be first off the blocks? Will it be pork neck with ribwort plantain and pork scratchings, veal tartare with caramelised sweetbread and burnt onions or breast of squab with confit leg, chilli and sweetcorn shoots? In Tuesday’s programme the chefs cook their fish course - poached ray wing with chicken skin and sea vegetables; stuffed red mullet with roasted artichoke and parmesan purée and pickled mackerel with smoked langoustine and infused coconut milk. Wednesday sees the chefs prepare their main course, but which one will get top marks? Thursday is the final chance to impress with their dessert dishes: whipped sea buckthorn with meringue and crispy rice, raspberry and tarragon roulade with cookie dough and tarragon oil and dark chocolate with raspberry jelly and raspberry sorbet. On Friday the Great British Menu judges will decide which of the central region chefs make it through to the national final for an opportunity for one of their dishes to be on the menu at The Olympic Feast.

Festival lovers look to Europe with Glastonbury Cancelled WITH Glastonbury cancelled, ABTA is expecting more music lovers to look to continental Europe this year for their festival fixes. There are some great line ups available with

the added bonuses of low prices, a foreign holiday and an adventure thrown into the mix. In recent years some ABTA Members have seen bookings more than double for European music festivals and bookings are predicted

Euro 2012 on the horizon SKYSCANNER has witnessed a huge surge in flight searches to Ukraine this year, with Brits heading over before and after the tournament, suggesting that Euro 2012 has raised awareness of the joint host nation as a holiday destination. Record numbers of Brits appear to be visiting Kiev the beautiful and largely

to outperform the overall holiday market this summer. Options are available throughout the continent with festivals in some of Europe’s most fascinating cities or by the sea. Many festivals can pretty much guarantee good weather, rather than the traditional mud baths that can be part of the fun in the UK. With festivals running from the end of May until the beginning of September there are options

available throughout the summer. Prices in Eastern Europe are particularly good with festival tickets coming in at as little as £39, less than you would pay for a single gig in the UK. Many of the venues are in beautiful areas, with Benicassim in Spain standing out with its beach location, complete with showers! All of the festivals offer camping options, many included in the basic ticket price, but for those

preferring a bit more luxury, B’ESTFEST in Romania, Exit in Serbia, Sziget in Hungary and INmusic in Croatia have the option of taking a hotel room in town. Victoria Bacon ABTA Head of Communications: “Taking in an overseas music festival this summer is a great way of combining two British love affairs; live music and summer holidays abroad. British festival goers are an adventurous bunch and

more and more of them are happy to go that extra mile for some truly amazing and memorable experiences. Ticket prices in Europe are often much lower than the UK and food and beer can be a lot cheaper too. Sam Poullain, Skyscanner’s Football Expert commented: “Ukraine currently attracts more than 20m visitors each year with most coming from Eastern Europe. However, our data shows that by holding a major sporting event such as Euro 2012, a country can attract people from all over the world as it did for Germany and South Africa in the last few years. With airlines offering flights to Kiev from just £100 return, it’s no wonder Brits are now heading over.”

Toyota’s double take! TOYOTA are now taking UK orders for their fabulous GT 86 sports car, which hits the showrooms in July. But it’s hardly a revolutionary model because it has a “twin” sister in the Subaru BRZ The two car-makers, who developed the machines together, displayed them both at the Tokyo Motor Show in December, having spent three years of building concept after concept. Initially, both cars will be identical, apart from front and rear bumper fascias, badging, and detail equipment levels. But the GT 86 was still the most exciting car on the floor at last month’s Geneva Auto Show. It’s not exactly mind-blowing, but it’s a great looker and perfect for today’s international market. For nearly a decade, manufacturers have been obsessed with making environmentally-friendly, socially-acceptable and techheavy cars. Walk around a contemporary motor show and you’ll see that it’s all about batteries, hybrids, fuel cells,

and the various ways your car will keep you entertained, even as it takes more of the joy, and occasionally skill, out of driving. Some blame Toyota for kicking this off with the Prius, but they are hardly alone in making cars that coddle us and not inspire us. Therefore, it is quite staggering that the company, working with Subaru, should be the ones to realise that the rearwheel drive sports coupés and sedans of a generation ago are, in a profound way, the perfect drivers’ cars. It’s so simple, really. The rear-wheel drive GT 86 and BRZ offer a curb weight of around one ton, and a modest output of 200hp in a compact, fun, exciting car that’s really driveable in today’s world. There is no need for trick power supplies, exotic

materials or turbo-chargers. Light weight and simplicity always have counted for a lot, especially in cars with a price in the mid-20 grand mark. Who would imagine that we’d ever see a car like the old FT 86 again? Or that a company would be so humble as virtually admit that 30-year-old ideas about cars are just fine? And put their money where their mouth is by building a production car? Road tests already suggest that the GT 86 and BRZ will be cars to buy and drive - really drive - for years and years to come. Maybe other car-makers will follow Toyota and Subaru down this path and build small, lightweight cars with real-world power and excellent handling. The GT 86 and BRZ are not high-tech, and they don’t pretend to save the planet,

but they are a big step forward Toyota did the planning and design, while Subaru did the engineering, and both versions will be built at Toyota’s Gunma plant in Japan. But the BRZ will not be available to the UK and European marker until next year, so more on that model nearer the time. The GT 86 will be available with a single specification and a number of options. The six-speed manual will start at £24,995

(30,000 euros), while cars with the six-speed auto with paddle-shifters cost £26,495 (32,000 euros). It is powered by a 197bhp four-cylinder boxer engine and comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, a dual-exhaust and a limited-slip diff, with switchable VSC stability control. There will be a choice of seven exterior colours, and all GT 86s will come with xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights, front foglamps and electric-folding mirrors.

It will also come with Toyota’s ‘Smart Entry’ keyless entry and start-button, plus cloth-covered black sports seats with contrasting red stitching and highlights. Black trim is standard, but customers can tick the box for leather or Alcantaracovered, heated seats. Either way, leather is standard on the steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever, and aluminium pedals are also standard. Luxuries include dualzone air-conditioning, cruise control, Hill Start Assist and a touch-screen to operate the stereo, which includes Bluetooth and a USB port. The system can be upgraded to include satnav with features including Google Local Search. The GT 86 will also have seven airbags as standard.

VW are really Up for the world’s best award THE Volkswagen Up has won this year’s World Car of the Year award, the baby hatchback beating off competition from the BMW 3 Series and Porsche 911, which also made the final three. There were 34 models contesting the title and the award was announced at the current New York motor show. Jurors, comprising 64 journalists from 25 countries, praised the baby hatchback’s “responsive steering, sophisticated suspension set-up, efficient engines and the quality of materials and finish”. They concluded: “The Up has altered what we have come to expect from the

13 April - 19 April 2012

citycar segment, and we expect all citycar builders to up their game just to compete with the new VW.” The same jury also voted Land Rover’s Range Rover Evoque the World Car Design of the Year, the Porsche 911 World Performance Car of the Year and the

Mercedes-Benz 250 CDI Blue efficiency World Green Car of the Year. The World Car of the Year awards have been running for eight years, and past winners include the Nissan Leaf (2011), VW Polo (2010), VW Golf (2009) and Mazda 2 (2008).

Big gun is silenced! Match Report By Geoff Huxtable

Nautas, Ourplace Playgirls, Cafe Rood, Scruffy Macs, Bad Girls, Summerland and Trap Door enjoyed some closelyfought matches. The two lucky ladies who will battle out the final on the stage during Presentation Night will be Julie, of Naughty Nautas, and the Bad Girls’ Sarah. The 27 entrants from Division 2 also produced some exciting games - and a minor upset for one of the favourites. Mally, a long-time member of the league, was knocked out in the semi-final by young gun

THE Memorial Trophy event is an endof-season, fund-raising, knock-out competition for charity. Funds are raised in memory of those who were involved with the Oasis Fm Darts League but have, sadly, passed away, so it was pleasing to see a fine turn-out of over 70 players at the Nauta Bar in Guaza. The ladies, of course, have their part to play in the event, and those from Naughty

Nathan, of Ourplace Naturals. Unsurprisingly, the other half of the draw saw another young man get to the final in the shape of Tom, from Sundowners. That will be a match to watch! The big boys of Division 1 produced some stunning matches and caused many groans and cheers from fellow players and spectators. And the wave of new talent coming through in Division 2 was matched by a superb performance from Daniel, of Xtreme Sports Bar. He beat two of his own team-mates on

the way to securing his spot in the final. There, he will meet Cafe Rood’s Luc, who disposed of two Bar 180A players from his half of the draw. Luckily for Luc, there will be plenty of young men to help him up on to the Presentation Night stage! Congratulations to all the competitors and winning players, and a big thank-you to Nauta Bar’s Debbie and Ray for hosting the event, and for their fine hospitality. Presentation Night is at Showtime, Las Americas, on Friday 20th April.

Superstars are finally nailed! WAS this the week the Oasis Fm Pool League was decided? Timing is everything and, with just four games to go, Hoops Bar have hit the top. That came courtesy of a massive turn around in Torviscas. League leaders Summerland Superstars looked to have, erm, put the final nail in the coffin for the Tenerife Hammers A when they blasted into a 3-0 lead. It should have been 4-0, but Grandad misjudged a simple yellow to allow Fritzel to steal a frame. That 3-1 score soon became 3-3 after the doubles

and the tide had truly turned when the Hammers took a 5-3 lead following another Grandad error. Penguin somehow pulled one back after Wez had missed an easy clearance to send it to a decider. Ashley looked in control against James, only for the Hammer to dig in and slowly turn the screw. And a vital foul by Ashley gifted James the win, to earn a massive three points for his team. The Superstars’ implosion has swung the title into the lap of Hoops, who were too strong for Phoenix Knights. Their 8-2 win sends them two points clear with just four games to go. On

Atlantis Sharks and Bar 180 A shared the spoils in Adeje. Barracuda Bandits need one more point to be crowned Division Two champions, despite being held to a draw by Summerland Elite. Phoenix Potters made sure the champagne stayed on ice as they beat Connors 7-3. It was a massive blow to Connors’ play-off hopes as their nearest rivals both won. La Cana accounted for Nauta B, while Inn The Pink scratched a 6-4er over Market Taverners. It’s probably too little, too

late for Tenerife Hammers C and Toscales A-Team, despite them both winning on Tuesday. Target Rangers picked up three points this week, as did Barracuda Hunters, who won the battle of the basement with Tenerife Pool Tables 8-2. Gaffers B are now guaranteed a play-off place in Division Three, and they should be joined by C&A Titans, who won 7-3 at Jardin Canario. Exiles B are coming late, winning two make-up matches with Next Door to move up to third. Legendary Jokers also beat Next Door 6-4. ROSCOE Sport Talk

Email: roscoe@canarianweekly.com

Chaos returns to Santa Cruz Celta Vigo B 3 CD Tenerife 1 IT’S the greatest game in the world, but football can be a cruel mistress. Take poor old Andres Garcia Tebar. You wait all your life to become a coach of a biggish side and, after a decade as a journeyman manager, you finally get your chance. Here is a sleeping giant with the biggest support in the section asking you to be their manager. They are in the playoff positions and have one of the best and most experienced squads in the league. Passionate fans. Professional, seasoned players. And a lovely fixture list, peppered with cannon-fodder after a kind opening. What could possibly go wrong? The best start for a new manager since the war gives you the respect of the fans, and the new signings are impressing in a side who start to gel. What could possibly go wrong? A sticky spell develops and there is a falling-out with the senior players. Results and performances tail off, yet

you manage to stay in the top three. The players revolt against you, yet the fans have your back. You play with nine men at home and win with a late goal and, a few weeks later you repeat the trick with 10 men and a 94th-minute winner. What could possibly go wrong? Then you travel to the second-worst side in the league. They have a player sent off after just five minutes and, within two minutes, you have the lead thanks to an owngoal. What could ..? Then your world falls in. Reality hits home and the whole charade plays out like some sick, Greek tragedy. The hosts’ siege mentality kicks in and your side crumble. Their star player equalises on the half-hour and then, minutes later, pokes in another for the lead goal. You give your troops a rallying cry at half/time. Or maybe a rocket, but they are not listening. They chase the game but leave the back door unlocked. Jota completes his hat-trick, the bickering begins, the club captain is sent off and before the full-time whistle is blown, the chairman has decided to give you the Spanish Archer El-Bow - and you are gone.

You’ve bossed 13 clubs in the search for success and after 12 matches you are fired before the 13th week. You are third in the table with just five games to go. But life is never straightforward at CD Tenerife. So we now have an eighth coach in 18 months, and Quique Medina (pictured) takes the poisoned chalice. He steps up from controlling the reserve side, to become “caretaker” manager for a second time, and he walks straight into the eye of the hurricane. There are just five games to go, and Tenerife will need to win four of them to guarantee a place in the lottery that

is the Spanish play-offs. But the fixtures are tough: 15th April - CDT v Lugo 22nd - Atletico B v CDT 29th - CDT v Real Oviedo 6th May - Lucano v CDT 13th - CDT v Alcala This Sunday, second-place Lugo pitch up, licking their

wounds after a 5-1 home battering by Real Madrid Castilla, league leaders and surely winners. Lugo won this section last season and they deserve a massive pat on the back for the way they have bounced back from their play-off

heartache. They are a wellorganised side with two pacy wingers, and they are excellent travellers. They have lost just twice away, to Castilla and Roda, and both of them were 1-0. After this daunting challenge it’s the league’s form side, Atletico Madrid B, who are unbeaten in 10 games and have lost only once at home since September. So can the former reserveteam boss do what Tebar couldn’t? Can he unite the dressing room? Can he win four matches from five games, and then repeat the trick to get us up? Or will we look back and shake our heads? If Medina is a better manager than Tebar, then surely he should have been appointed instead when Antonio Calderon was fired in January. One name springs to mind: Mick McCarthy!

Horoscopes of the week Aries

(March 21st-April 20th) Deal with any problems sooner rather than later, and don’t take temporary measures or they are likely to cause you problems later. You could find it difficult to deal with the problems of a younger person and should ask other people’s opinion, especially as it doesn’t seem to be a direct problem affected you. It’s going to be an opportune but confusing week. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) Someone contacts you unexpectedly and may suggest a meeting. An important date or appointment is forecast, which could be significant to your future. Make sure you prepare well for it and dress as expected. To take any sort of an immature stand at this stage would be both futile and useless. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) Don’t be too proud to ask a favour from a friend or loved one, as they will be only too willing to help. That stubborn streak which has kicked lately is not doing you any favours. A lot of activity is indicated on the social scene, and you need to be careful that you don’t give the impression that you’re flirting with someone you’d never really be interested in. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) Be careful not to overdo the food and drink at the weekend as it’s important that you are feeling strong in both mind and body for what lies ahead. New people and places are indicated, and it could be that you are planning or taking a holiday. Make the most of your opportunity to see new places and to try out different things. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) An interesting meeting is forecast with someone who is set to have a profound effect on the decisions you make for your future. Treat yourself to a new item of clothing

Page 48

or a new hairstyle. You’re going to need an influx of confidence for the chances coming your way unexpectedly before the week is over. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) Be careful not to neglect a close one who may be going through a difficult phase. You don’t have to babysit him or her but you don’t have to ignore the person either. Communication has not been at its best for some time, but there is much you can do to change this fact. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) This appears to be the beginning of an important phase for you, and it could bring about a big change in your present way of life. Be adventurous and keep an open mind on new ideas, because some interesting opportunities are coming your way. If you miss them now, they may not come again. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Try to have a bit more confidence in yourself. Deep down, you know that you could complete what lies ahead in your sleep. It’s only your worry about others judging you that seems to be the real base of the problem. Why don’t you try to get to know these people a little better? It’s the key to realising they’re only human. S AG I T TA R I U S (November 23rdDecember 21st) This is a very advantageous time

C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) You will have to budget your money carefully if you want to save for that important item. There is so much you want to do this month, but you have to stop and make a list of the most important things, or you will end up doing nothing. Time spent with a family member can help fill in a lot of missing blanks about past dramas.

An important letter is forecast, which may cause you to change your plans and give up your time, but it will be well worth it. Remember to take things one step at a time and not rush anything. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Don’t let other people dampen your enthusiasm for a new project. Do what you want to do, and go it alone if necessary. Some important contract or document is on the way, and it will turn out to be lucky for you and for someone else who is involved as well. Don’t tell lies in business because they will come back on you.

What better way to train your brain. Starting at the left with the number provided, work across each of these lines applying the mathematical instructions to your running total. Don´t reach for the calculator - that´s cheating! Write your final answer in the last box of the line. Aim to complete each round in about 30 seconds. Good Luck!
