Cabildo plans a multi-billion motorsport circuit for Tenerife
Our F1 dream on track THE likes of F1 world champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button could be heading our way in the next few years if plans for an international motorsport circuit come to fruition.
The ambitious project, involving grandstands to seat 30,000 spectators and access approach roads in Atogo’s Los Duques area within the municipality of Granadilla, has been mooted by Tenerife Cabildo, which has put the whole scheme out to tender. The bidding process involves one company winning a contract for 40 years to provide a two-part scheme. The first part involves obtaining funding and then the construction of the circuit, which includes grandstands, pit lanes, heli-pads, etc. The second part sees investment into access and infrastructure surrounding the track. Again, this involves the winning company providing investment and completion of the project. Those interested will have four months to respond to the tender, upon which the project will begin in the first quarter of 2013. It will take up to two years for the circuit and surroundings to be up and running. The Cabildo hope that the track will be operational in 2015. All that remains is for the Cabildo to tempt a company to organise and run the entire project, for which it would have to pay around 30 million euros for a 40-year concession. Plans have been drawn up
for the track (pictured below) in consultation with the designers of Formula One’s Catalunya Circuit Montmelo in Barcelona. And it conforms to F1 standards, as do all the other requirements, including a pit lane, medical facilities, access, etc. On paper, it looks as though our government is in fantasy land, but officials are now making plans to sound out the respective motorsport bodies for approval to run international car and motorcycle racing In fact, the idea was first proposed some 17 years ago. Private-sector funding, which will run into billions of euros, will be sought and, says the Cabildo, there is already interest from Germany and the mega-rich United Arab Emirates (UAE). The presentation ceremony,
above, was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior; Minister of Development Projects Eduardo Pintado; Granadilla Mayor Jaime González Cejas; Benito Rodriguez, president of the Federation Interinsular Motorsports of
Santa Cruz; Vicente Gonzalez, President of the Federation of Motorcycling Canaria, and Juan Farizo, Tenerife Royal Automobile Club President. An upbeat Melchior said: “We need to look optimistically to the future, and we have the ideal conditions to move forward.
“We have the best all-round climate in Europe, with 148 direct flights connecting Tenerife to cities all over the world from the South airport, and a swift communications connection of fibre optics based in Granadilla. “It is an opportunity to create jobs and wealth in the south of Tenerife, and it’s a good thing for our people.” The Cabildo chief added: “We also have thousands of people in Tenerife who are great motorsport enthusiasts, which gives us strength and hope to overcome all barriers. “I want to thank the people who have contributed towards the project, such as the late Adan Martin, and the councillors who have worked so hard towards making the Tenerife circuit a reality.”
Development Project Minister Pintado said: “This project is for real, and I thank the support of President Ricardo Melchior and all the directors. “The circuit can be a huge help as complementary leisure tourism to the island. My greatest hope is that potential investors are Canarians.” The FIA is the world motorsport governing body, and a security spokesman for the organisation told Canarian Weekly last night (Thursday) that to obtain FIA accreditation, the Cabildo would have to send a dossier of its project for approval. Optimistic plans, and there may be critics out there who think that a project of this scale is far too ambitious in such austere times.

IGIC revenue is shared out THE Canary Islands government, the councils and municipalities reached an agreement this week in relation to IGIC increases.
Despite the abstention of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, the agreement was reached after five days of negotiations between the regional government and representatives of the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (Fecam) and the Canary Islands Federation (Fecai). The Canary Islands Government has decided to raise IGIC from 5% to 7% to try to offset the cut in the State budget of 448 million euros to fund basic services. Although, initially, the regional government wanted to keep all of the extra tax
revenue, (as Canarian Weekly reported last week) about 250 million maximum, Law 9/2003 states that the share should be 58% for the town councils and town councils and 42% for the Spanish government. Following negotiations, it has been agreed to give the mainland executive half of the revenues collected by the rise of IGIC until 2016. Thus, the autonomous region can address the financing of health, education and social services with the remainder. “It was a good agreement despite the abstention of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, a decision which we respect but do not understand,” said Gonzalez Ortiz, who qualified that the tax increase has been made to protect essential public services provided by the region. On abstinence, the second vice president of the Cabildo of
Gran Canaria, Rosa Rodriguez, said that “we believe that this process of rising IGIC has not been properly done because it has not taken into account the views of the councils. In addition, we have spoken out against the amendment of the Law 9/2003 to meet the demands made by the Government of the Canary Islands, nor been informed of the proposals have been other meetings.“ “The political scene, economic and administrative Islands and the Autonomous Region which is framed in the Law 9/2003 can not be modified and we believe they should have made other proposals for the collection of any tax that would have been excluding local government and island “said Rodriguez. President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior said that “the town councils and
municipalities have taken a very generous and supportive stance, to give the government half of the new tax collection by the tax increase.” “Given the economic situation is so bad we need to reach agreements, there is a sharing of scarce resources at the moment, we understand that priorities should be essential public services to be maintained at all costs,” said vice president and president of the Fecai Cabildo of La Palma, Guadalupe Gonzalez Tano. Tano Gonzalez also said the agreement reached between all the authorities will allow the Canarian regional executive to spend on Health, Education and Social Services. Councils will receive their proportional share of the increase and, although it will be fractionated for years, until 2016 when it will return to normal.
Razor’s ready to rumble! The final celebrity for this month’s Soccer Saturday and Friends event has been named and he is another bona fide footballing legend. Former West Ham, Liverpool and Southampton centre back Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock will join the stars for what promised to be an amazing few days. Razor gets the late call up and he cannot wait to arrive: “It’s brilliant to be able to come away with the lads for a few days. When I was asked it took me about three seconds to say yes! I love a round of golf and of course the Gentlemen’s night.
04 May - 10 May 2012
It will be great to come to Tenerife and tell a few stories!” Ruddock earned his solitary England cap in a friendly with Nigeria in 1994 and had a glittering career. He played over 100 top flight matches for Southampton before joining Tottenham in 1992. A year later he moved to Liverpool for 2.5million
pounds and he played the best football of his career. He also had a famous run in with Eric Cantona, had another ‘incident’ with Peter Beardsley, broke both of Man United’s Andy Cole’s legs and had a drink driving incident involving a Porsche and a blonde! He arrived at West Ham in 1998, had a big on field spat
with Patrick Viera, another with Harry Kewell and inspired the Hammers to a fifth place finish. Razor joins Paul Merson, Alan Kennedy, Phil Thompson, Chris Kamara and Nicky Cook and Kamara cannot believe that Ruddock is coming: “Unbelievable!” he told Canarian Weekly “Razor is a top top lad and it’s great to have him here. The thought of having him and Merson in the same place at the same time is just, just a nightmare! I’m going to have my hands full! But it will really make the week special. I cannot wait for it to happen.” For tickets call 669 622 622.
Hospital funds are ring-fenced
CANARIAN President Paulino Rivero has promised money for healthcare despite the Canaries budget being slashed by millions this year. The President made these statements during a visit to the health center of San Isidro (Granadilla) in the south of Tenerife on Wednesday. “We will continue with our project to guarantee universal health care, free and affordable while others are being privatised,” he added. The President said that this year there is funding for two public hospitals in the island, north and south. He blamed various delays for the problems with the south hospital and did not confirm when the existing El Mojon hospital, which is currently working out of prefabricated buildings as it has done for many years will move into the new building. “The works have not stopped and will continue at a pace that will allow us to budget, but we will continue in this endeavor because it is a need to clear both the Hospital Universitario de Canarias as La Candelaria” he said. Local reports are that patient being admitted to these hospitals are spending days in corridors until a bed can be allocated.
He was accompanied on Wednesday by the Minister of Health of the regional government, Bridget Mendoza, and the mayor of Granadilla municipality, Jaime González Cejas. He said his intention is “to work for keeping levels of quality of health care that the Canaries expect.” He stressed that two hospitals which have been privatized in the Balearics and Catalonia are closing. Paulino Rivero continued that “health care for immigrants is “a state government responsibility,” which “should have been more scrupulous icontrolled and growth monitored in Spain and the Canary Islands. “ Rivero said that once the state “has been permissive” to “this massive influx” of citizens of other countries, “there is no choice but to attend to and focus on integration and social cohesion.” Interestingly, whether co-incidental or not this news comes a week after over 2.000 people joined a march through Los Cristianos in Arona, protesting against the lack of a public hospital in the area, leading to patients either being treated at Hospiten and draining the health budget or having to travel to the north. The local government has announced that it will be completed by the summer of 2013.

SIX BRITONS from South Tenerife, facing 12 years in prison and fines over 60,000 euros, have been found not guilty after a drug-trafficking and money-laundering case dating back four years. In 2008 the police were alerted that British subjects here in Tenerife were transporting drugs. It was alleged that in 2008, Stephen Dennis Brown, a British resident in Portugal, made frequent trips to the mainland and UK. On one occasion, a truck was intercepted by British police on the A40 in Oxfordshire, containing drugs worth 806,662.04 euros on the open market. The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), a British agency responsible for investigations into major criminal
organisations, alerted the National Police (UDYCO) that British subjects were transporting cocaine. Their investigations revealed that James MacDonald, known as Jim, and his wife, from Las Mimosas, Adeje, were in charge of transport and logistics. Another defendant, Ian Robert Donaldson, owned property in the Canaries worth around 1,974,000 euros, plus other assets, including top-end vehicles totalling 3,3m euros. The court ruled that it could convict Stephen Dennis Brown for an offence against public health only, sending him to prison, and fining him. However, MacDonald, Donaldson, Ronald O’Dea and Deborah Tamara Learmouth were all acquitted, as were Mary Hendry and Brown.

I’ve written and recorded dozens of songs and I’m sure I will play a few for you.” he told the Linekers Lunchtime Show on Oasis Fm. Cognito is proud of the fact that he has never been on TV, and he is an industry legend.

‘Poor management’ wastes millions of health budget LATEST figures reveal Spain’s health service is millions of euros in debt simply due to ‘bad management.’ Inefficient practices, failing to invoice sick or injured holidaymakers’ countries of origin for their treatment, and different regions
charging different amounts for treatment when this is paid for by insurance or by the patient’s own health service when they are in Spain as tourists are among the many areas where the State is losing funds hand over fist. Other sources of financial wastage include lack of proper computer systems which make administration
work long-winded and inaccurate, and issuing healthcare cards to foreigners who do not meet the requirements for free medical care, such as those who do not live in Spain all the year round. In most cases, it’s the haphazard attitude to billing tourists’ own countries for treatment that leaves a hole of on average 4.5 million
euros per year in the health service budget. Over 45 per cent of treatment provided to holidaymakers and visitors from the 37 countries which have a reciprocal agreement with Spain does not get invoiced to the patients’ home governments, according to the national court responsible for public accounts.

THE Spanish Government has announced plans to alter the “high” rate of absenteeism among staff within the public sector. One suggestion is that they do not receive their full salary during the first three months of sick leave. The ‘National Reform Programme 2012’, is awaiting approval from Brussels for approval, the measures outlined include the “modification of full remuneration during the first 90 days of sick leave” and changes to the way temporary disability allowance is calculated - in days rather than months “to accurately reflect the employee’s real health situation”. In addition it is proposed that salaries will not be paid in cases of unjustified absence or in cases where the employee fails to attend a medical examination. The Government states that the purpose of this
reform is “to reduce the moral hazard associated with securing relatively common contingencies, resulting in a high rate of absenteeism among public sector employees”. The increased number of sick days “directly affects the public administration productivity, not only as a consequence of the absence in itself, but also because of its negative effect on employee motivation in the workplace and on the work performance of those covering the absentee” according to the Government. The Government also argues that “since absences are remunerated, absenteeism directly affects the public coffers in an unjustifiable fashion, with the consequent costs for society as a whole”. It is also believed that “after the fourth month of sick leave, there are no adequate control mechanisms that effectively link the payment of subsidies with the real degree of illness or disability”.

Why Cy is singing from the rooftops 'Hi Cy, I think you might be my dad!' THIS was the start of a magical email received by Cy Benson less than a month ago, which ended 38 years of emotional heartache for the popular Tenerife entertainer. It came from the woman he had last seen all those years ago, when he held baby Kerensa in his arms just an hour after his girlfriend, Gillian, had given birth in a local Newport hospital.
Top: Kerensa at a young age. Bottom: Cy's other daughter Leighanne looking so much like Kerensa ( Lisa )
Page 10
Little did the 64-year-old singer know that it would his last sighting of her - after spending more than half his life trying to track her down until now! And little did he know, either, that Kerensa, who grew up with adopted parents as Lisa Davies in North Wales, had also been searching for her real father. Kerensa, who married Oliver Cox in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire, in 2009, now has a 10-month-old daughter, Lila, and Cy’s incredible journey is almost complete. He is now counting the days down until 3rd June, when he will be reunited with his daughter, son-in-law and grand-daughter in England. “I’m going to a wedding on 2nd June at Hoddesdon, in Hertfordshire, and they are picking me up the next day and taking me back to their home,” he told Canarian Weekly this week. “And I just can’t wait. “I have spoken with Kerensa on the telephone and, from that day, I haven’t stopped smiling. We talked for ages, in between the tears of happiness, and I am the luckiest person on this earth.” He added: “It feels like a ton weight has been lifted off my shoulders. My family is now complete, and not only have I got three gorgeous children, but I have got three gorgeous grandchildren as well. “This is one happy dad!” But he could never have dreamed of such a happy ending throughout his years of misery trawling through adoption agencies, hospitals, and even TV’s Jimmy Savile and Jeremy Kyle, to avail. And with the stress and anguish of not knowing came three heart attacks and a stroke over the years. But Cy, a former amateur boxer, fought his way back to full health. He came to Tenerife with a brother 16 years ago after touring with various bands all over the world before moving here for a fresh start. It worked well, because he was well received from day one, and has been singing ever since, gaining a legion of devoted followers. “I never quite made it big in Britain, said the big
Welshman, who is never shy of asking audiences: “What’s the matter’? Haven’t you seen a big black Welshman before?” It’s a perfect description of this modest singer, but his humour belies the dreadful torment he has been through since parting with his then girlfriend, Gillian. His story starts back in the Seventies when, despite opposition from her mother, they courted, as young couples do. He was singing with his band, who had a three-month booking in London, when he received a telephone call one morning to say that Gill, as he called her, had been taken into hospital in labour and could have the baby that day. “We weren’t working until the evening, so I jumped in a car and raced down to be with her,” he recalled. “ I missed the birth by about 45 minutes, but Gill looked fine and really happy. “I picked up the baby and held her in my arms, not wanting to let her go. We decided to call her Lisa, and I could not wait to get home to Newport to tell my mother and family. I was one proud dad. “Sadly, I had to drive back to London that evening to get back for our late-night show, so I could only stay with them for a couple of hours. “I called Gill every day to see
how Lisa was getting on and was told she was fine. Then, at the end of our London contract, I was dropped off at Gill’s home at about 6am. “Her brother let me in, and I slept on the sofa until her mum got up. She made me a cup of tea around 10am and went upstairs to tell Gill I was there. “She came down a couple of hours later, and I was so excited, wanting to see the baby. But Gill went straight into the kitchen with her mum, who closed the door. “I could hear a bit of a disagreement going on and then Gill came out crying, saying the baby had been fostered straight from the hospital.” Cy, with tears in his eyes as he recounted the story, added: “I lost my temper immediately, and asked who had adopted her. “But Gill said she didn’t know, and that I couldn’t find out because I wasn’t down as the father on the birth certificate, the space being left blank. I burst into tears and told her we were finished“ The entire episode came as the biggest shock of his life, and from that day in 1974, he devoted himself to discovering his baby’s whereabouts. But every avenue remained
closed to him, simply because he hadn’t been named as the father. “I tried the hospital where she was born, the local Births, Deaths and Marriages office, Jimmy Savile’s TV programme, the Salvation Army, numerous adoption researchers, Friends Reunited, My Space, Jeremy Kyle and even the current Lost and Found TV series,” said Cy. But the answer was always the same: “You’re not on the Birth Certificate.” And on the rare occasion when he thought he had made a breakthrough, that source was suddenly “blocked”. In desperation, he and his daughter, Le i g h a n n e, had both contacted a missing persons’ agency some years ago, with no luck, and Cy even told her he was convinced he would go to his grave without ever seeing his long-lost daughter. Then, suddenly, on 15th April, he walked in to the Wigan Pier bar in Torviscas to perform his show, to be told: “Someone’s been on the phone saying he’s married to your daughter and wanting
your telephone number. Emma, from the bar, asked him to leave his own number which, somehow, had been mislaid when he returned to the bar for his regular spot the following Sunday. “Emma asked for my daughter’s name and I told her, but she said that wasn’t what she’d been given,” said Cy. “When I asked whether it was Lisa, she said Yes, and when I got home, I found several emails in my junk box from Lisa, who had changed her name to Kerensa Knight Cox. The final one started, ‘Hi Cy, I think you might be my dad’. She and her husband had been trying to get hold of me after reading Leighanne’s missing persons’ message. I sent Kerensa an email and sat up all night awaiting a reply. “I must have dozed off, because I heard a sound on the PC and woke up to find that there was a message from her. I wiped my eyes and then rang her straight away. “It was the most incredible feeling just to hear her voice, and we talked for ages. It was better than winning the lottery!” Kerensa is an old Cornish word meaning Peace and Love, and what better reward for a man who has carried his devotion for her around with him for 38 years?

Madeline: There’s still hope, says police chief KATE and Gerry McCann marked the fifth anniversary of their daughter Madeleine’s disappearance yesterday (Thursday) amid renewed hopes that she will be found. The couple are “hugely encouraged” by Scotland Yard’s ongoing review, which has identified 195 potential leads, But they will be more than disappointed that the Portuguese authorities have, so far, refused to reopen their investigation into how the then three-year-old vanished on a family holiday in the Algarve on 3rd May 2007. The McCanns, from Rothley, Leicestershire, marked the heartbreaking landmark privately with family and friends. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, who is leading Scotland Yard’s review, firmly believes the case can still be solved, and he launched a fresh appeal for information. His 37-strong team of officers have sifted through 40,000 pieces of information
04 May - 10 May 2012
and identified 195 “investigative opportunities”. DCI Redwood believes Madeleine was a victim of “stranger” abduction and says there is evidence that she could still be alive. He says the Metropolitan Police would like the case to be reopened, but emphasises that the decision is up to the Portugese authorities. “What we are not doing is just passively passing through material,” he said. “We are actively seeking to bring closure in this case.” However, Pedro do Carmo, deputy national director of the Policia Judiciaria (Portugal’s CID), countered, saying: “So far, no new element has been found that might provide the basis for re-opening the investigation.” The decision was delivered after Scotland Yard urged authorities to resume their investigation, and they even released a new “ageprogressed” image showing what she might look like as a nine-year-old. Mrs McCann was said to be “particularly pleased” with the new image of Madeleine, believing it had a strong family resemblance. Madeleine was nearly four when she vanished from her
family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, as her parents dined with friends at a nearby tapas restaurant. A mammoth police investigation and huge
worldwide publicity has not so far proved fruitful, despite the hundreds of possible sightings of the little girl since she vanished. Referring to the 195 potential new leads, family
spokesman Clarence Mitchell told BBC Breakfast: “Kate and Gerry are hugely encouraged by what the police have been doing all of this last year since the launch of the investigative review. “They (Scotland Yard) believe it is quite possible that Madeleine could still be alive, and that is what Kate and Gerry have said throughout the five years. They are hugely encouraged by all of this momentum in the case.” He said that, like the British police, the still-distraught parents want the case to be reopened. But he added: “This is up to the Portuguese
authorities.” Mr Mitchell later said: “They are very pleased that the new age-progressed image of Madeleine has been put out and is getting wide publicity. Of course, this is the girl people should still be looking for. “We need to remind people around the world that this is probably what Madeleine looks like today, and not the famous picture of her when she went missing. “This is Madeleine as a young girl now. Kate particularly feels there is a very strong family resemblance. She sees Madeleine, Sean and Amelie, her brother and sister, and herself in the image.”
‘Madeleine was in my cab’ A TAXI driver who believes he picked up Madeleine McCann the night after she vanished has accused Portuguese police of ignoring the evidence he gave them. Antonio
Castela
is
convinced the little girl in pink pyjamas travelling with four adults, whom he picked up at Monte Gordo - about an hour from where she was taken - was three-year-old Madeleine. Maddie was wearing a pink T-shirt featuring the character Eeyore, and white trousers with a small floral pattern, at the time of her abduction.
The 72-year-old cabbie described how the girl even had the same distinctive mark in her eye, seen on thousands and thousands of “missing” posters circulated throughout Europe since her disappearance, He went to Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria, the country’s investigative unit, soon after discovering Madeleine had gone
missing, and gave a statement. But Mr Castela said: “I never heard anything from them. They did not seem to take me seriously and never questioned me. They simply took down the details and that was it. “I am amazed that it has been five years, and nobody has ever asked me what I saw that night. I am absolutely certain it was her.”

UK clamps down on cannabis farms IT brings a new meaning to the phrase, “grow your own”. Last year in the UK Police discovered more than 20 cannabis farms and factories on a daily basis according to new figures. A total of 7,865 farms were found across the UK in 2011/12 - up 15% from 6,866 in 2009/10 and more than a 150% increase on the figure four years ago. Plants seized were worth
over £200m on the street. Allan Gibson, Scotland Yard Commander said: “Commercial cannabis cultivation continues to pose a significant risk to the UK. Increasing numbers of organised crime groups are diverting into this area of criminality but we are determined to continue to disrupt such networks and reduce the harm caused by drugs. The highest numbers of farms were found in the West Yorkshire area totalling 936.
Heathrow hires to beat border queues
The Scream sets a new world record
FOLLOWING the furore in the last week over passport queues at Heathrow in April extra staff are now being drafted in.
EDVARD Munch’s 'The Scream' has become the most expensive piece of art to ever be sold at auction. The famous 1895 pastel was sold to an anonymous buyer at Sotheby’s in New York for a cool 119.9million dollars or 74million pounds. The sales room at Sotheby’s erupted in applause and cheering and some of the Sotheby’s officials told the world’s press that the sale was the high point of their careers. Auctioneer Tobias Meyer said “It’s worth every penny that the collector paid. It is one of the great icons of the art world.” Proceeds of the sale will be used to help build a new museum, hotel and art centre in Norway. The Scream is one of four in a series by the Norwegian

artist and is the only one still privately owned. The masterpiece had a starting price of 40million dollars and bidding took over twelve minutes. Initially there were eight bidders and this was slowly whittled down to three as the bidding past the estimated value of 80million dollars. Two bidders continued to drive the price up until the hammer sank on 107million dollars, which becomes nearly 120million after commissions and fees. The previous world record for an artwork sold at auction was for Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust. This was sold for 106.5million dollars in 2010. Over the years The Scream has become arguably the most famous piece of art. Whist millions flock to Paris to see the Mona Lisa, The Scream has appeared on everything from coffee cups to T-shirts and has been parodied relentlessly.
In some instances, airlines say their customers have been forced to queue for more than two-and-a-half hour hours. Willie Walsh, IAG chief executive, the parent company of British Airways, commented to the British Press, “Our customers are saying this is unacceptable, the queues are far too long and it is happening on a regular basis.” Immigration Minister
EVEN though the Bank of England has not increased its base interest rate for three years since March 2009, millions of UK homeowners will have seen the cost of their mortgage payments increase as lenders raise borrowing costs. Lenders including the Halifax, Co-operative Bank, Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank are raising
Damian Green MP visited Heathrow and announced 80 extra staff are to work on the UK Border desks and plans for a new control centre to improve efficiency. “The queues that we have been seeing recently are too long and the number of actions we’re taking are all designed to mitigate the problem, to eliminate it altogether whenever we can and to make sure that as the summer increase in passengers arrive, we can control it,” he said. Previously MP Green appeared to play down the problem suggesting that people were overdramatising the delays, something that Mr Walsh admitted left him “shocked”. Mr Walsh said: “Damian
Green and the Government need to understand the scale of the problem and it is only by understanding it and accepting it that we will be confident that they can resolve it.” Talks have also taken place at a high level – the Prime
Minister and Home Secretary have talked to ensure the Government delivers on the action being promised. There are obvious concerns with the Olympics on the horizon where Heathrow is expecting a mass increase of passengers.
Mortgage Misery their standard variable rate (SVR). Halifax, which is owned by taxpayer-backed Lloyds Banking Group and has the most borrowers at 850,000, is raising its SVR from 3.5% to 3.99% - resulting in additional payments of hundreds of pounds a year. Lenders blame the weak economy, the eurozone debt crisis and the increased cost of funding a mortgage for the increases. Around 54,000 Co-operative Bank customers will see their
payments increase by about £15 a month and Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks’ 30,000 customers, will see their bills rise by almost £30 a month. Natwest, which is backed by RBS, is also pushing up the rate on its One Account, a non-SVR product, by 0.25%, affecting around 100,000 customers. For the majority of these customers, the new rate will be 4%. Consumers described the emotional impact of increases in mortgage repayments as “devastating” and “a disaster”.
Which? chief executive, Peter Vicary-Smith said: “Our advice to anyone struggling with their mortgage repayments is speak to your lender straight away. “It is encouraging that a third of people we spoke to had approached their lender but worryingly in one in five cases, they said their lenders offered no help at all. “This is just not good enough and we want to see banks do more to help their customers who are struggling.”

£1m Marathon girl’s funeral
Straw-Berry good THE barmy British weather has caused a bumper strawberry crop according to growers. An unseasonably warm March and cool April have combined to deliver “sweet and flavourful” berries, according to an industry body. British Summer Fruits said that the use of protective

polytunnels, has helped produce this year’s crop, growers are now reaping the benefits of over 20 years investment. Strawberry lovers will be able to buy British strawberries in the run-up to both the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. Locally-grown strawberries are already starting to appear in supermarkets, with the British season likely to peak in late June and
last until October. Figures from Kantar Worldpanel show that berries now account for 18.4% of all fruit sales in British supermarkets, with year-onyear sales to August 2011 increasing by 13.3%. The UK berry market is worth £783 million. British Summer Fruits chairman Laurence Olins said: “Twenty years ago the summer strawberry crop would have been decimated
by the recent inclement weather, but thanks to two decades of investment in protection from the elements the entire crop is safe. “We are expecting the effect of the warmth of March and cool April to combine to deliver sweet and flavourful berries. “The crop is likely to be up 10% from last year, the result of increased plantings in response to consumer demand.”
HUNDREDS attended Claire Squires funeral, the runner who died during the London Marathon. Since her death more than £1m has been donated to the Samaritans on Claire’s JustGiving web page. The 30-year-old hairdresser collapsed and died close to the finish of the marathon. She was an experienced runner. At the funeral service at St Andrew’s Church in North Kilworth, Leicestershire, tributes were paid to the runner by her partner Simon van Herrewege and her younger sister Penny.
She told mourners: “Claire couldn’t do anything quietly. She came into this world making the front page of the paper after Dad delivered her in the front seat of the car on Leicester Road. “Now look how she’s left us - a huge legacy she’s left in her footsteps, well over £1m raised for charity and she has become the nation’s sweetheart. “I’m so proud to call her my sister.” Mourners were asked to wear a “splash” of red, Ms Squire’s favourite colour. Claire was buried in the family plot in the churchyard in a private service prior to the funeral. Reverend Emma Davies began the service telling mourners that “many people’s lives will be changed for the better because of Claire”.

Shock death of world swim king ALEXANDER Dale Oen, Norway’s 26-year-old world swimming champion, has died of a heart attack at a training camp in Flagstaff, Arizona. Oen, among the Olympic medal favourites in London this summer was found collapsed on the floor of his bathroom on Monday evening. He was taken to a local medical centre where, despite repeated attempts at resuscitation, he was pronounced dead. Oen was the reigning
world 100m breaststroke champion after winning gold in Shanghai last year. He was also a silver medallist in the same event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Norwegian team coach Petter Lovberg said: “We’re all in shock. This is a terrible experience for the whole team. Words cannot describe the grief we feel.” David Sparkes, British Swimming chief executive, paid tribute, saying: “He was outstanding and he very much did it his way. He was in a class of his own and it is a great loss.” He added: “He clearly had a great chance of being Olympic champion in London.”
One year on Osama secrets uncovered IT’S ALMOST hard to believe but this week saw the first anniversary of the death of Osama Bin Laden. And to mark the occasion the US military has publicly released new documents. The 175 page cache was located in Bin Laden’s hideout and gives a fascinating insight into life inside his lair. They cover the period from September 2006 until just a few weeks before his death. They reveal a frustrated leader struggling to inspire and revive his al-Qaeda network. The papers include communications between Bin Laden and his closest associates along with his hand written diary. In that diary Bin Laden writes about his fears that Muslims were being alienated by the ideology of jihad, his encouraging of assassination attempts on Barack Obama and a reaffirming of a backing of the cause. The documents were seized during the raid on the Abbottabad compound and make fascinating reading. Bin Laden strongly advised against attacks within the Islamic world, and instead urged focus on American soil. He writes of the lack of support from within Pakistan, the strained relationship with Iran and the importance of not targeting US Vice-President Joe Biden since “Biden is totally
Page 14
unprepared for Leadership and if we can get Obama, then Biden would lead the US into chaos.” In a letter from April 2011, Bin Laden discusses the Arab Spring, calling it a “formidable event”in the history of Muslims and gave his whole hearted supported. The documents show a man who was unhappy with his deputies and desperate to usher in a new wave of terror attacks: “I plan to release a statement that we are starting a new phase to correct the mistakes we made in doing so, we shall reclaim, God willing, the trust of a large segment of those who lost their trust in the jihadis.” he wrote in 2010. He also wrote of a settled and secure home life and the “amazing way” his family gets on with life on a day to day basis. Critics of the findings have quite rightly asked if they are complete, it would be naive to accept that they paint a complete picture of life inside his compound. The secret services would suggest that any such missing items were for security reasons, but even as they stand they portray an amazing insight.
Titanic II A WEALTHY Australian business man plans to build a replica of the ill-fated Titanic. Clive Palmer, who was recently named as a National Living Treasure of Australia in 2012, has just announced that he has
commissioned a Chinese state-owned company - CSC Jinling Shipyard, to build a 21st Century version of the Titanic. The 58 year-old Australian billionaire originated from humble beginnings in Victoria and had a successful early career in real estate, mostly on the Gold Coast. He told Australian media
that construction would start at the end of next year. Titanic II is set to be finished in 2016. Palmer has many interests in tourism. He has a luxury resort on the Sunshine Coast and his future plans are to invest in luxury cruises. “It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will
have state-of-the-art 21st Century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems,” he said in a statement. The cost of the construction is unknown. “It is going to be designed so it won’t sink,’’ he added. ‘’But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen.’’
The Sun turn Hodgson’s England job into a farce ROY HODGSON is the new England football manager, but his appointment has sparked fury and controversy. The appointment of the now former West Brom boss is not a massive surprise, but the fact that Harry Redknapp was not even interviewed is. Hodgson was the only candidate interviewed by the Football Association, and it quickly became clear that would accept the job. He takes over with immediate effect, but will still be in charge for West Brom’s final two Premier League matches. He said: “The FA have decided I’m the man they want for the job, and I’m proud to accept it. Every coach has to win over players. And, if the suggestion is that the fans and media aren’t behind me at the moment, let’s hope I can do enough work to change that situation. “It’s important for everyone in the country to get behind the team. I’m rather hoping everyone will get behind me and give us the chance of the success we would like.”
There was a massive media campaign to get Redknapp appointed and, while Harry certainly had a lot of public support, there were plenty who were sceptical. Redknapp has always been a Fleet Street darling: media savvy and friendly. And he, was always going to be the choice of the largely West Ham-supporting national football writers. But the FA have gone down a different route and appointed a man with international experience and a man who has won more trophies. Hodgson’s first job is to pick and then unite the England team ahead of next month’s Euro 2012. He must sort out the prickly problem of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. Terry will stand trial in July charged with racial crimes against Rio’s brother, Anton. Hodgson, keen for both men to play in Ukraine, said: “John and Rio, as respected members of the team, are going to be two I need to speak to. I will try to sit down with them.” He revealed that he will pick Wayne Rooney, despite him missing the first two matches though suspension: “I’m look-
ing forward very much to Wayne coming to the Euros with us, and to his contribution, even if he can’t play in the first two games. He is a brilliant player and we will need him.” Bookies were impressed with the appointment and cut the odds on England to triumph at the European Championship. The new Three Lions’ chief is already in a confident mood, saying: “We always have to go into tournaments to win them because we’re a major footballing nation. “It will never be easy, and it will be more difficult here because the man who qualified the team isn’t with us and I’ve taken over at a late stage. “But no one would expect anything less of us than to go there trying to win it. I will be very, very disappointed if we don’t get out of the group” It will be interesting to see how he shapes the squad following the departure of Fabio Capello. Goalie Ben Foster and striker Peter Crouch could be two players to receive an international lifeline. Meanwhile, there has been widespread condemnation for the way The Sun newspaper reported the appoint-
ment on its front page. “Bwing on the Euwos. We’ll see you in Ukwaine against Fwance,” was the headline, mocking Hodgson’s speech impediment. The Press Complaints Commission received hundreds of complaints and FA chairman David Bernstein called it “disrespectful”. He added: “We are delighted at the media response to Roy’s appointment but are disappointed with the headline in The Sun, which we consider is in poor taste.” An official FA statement read: “The FA and the Press Complaints Commission have today received a large number of objections relating to the front-page headline in The Sun newspaper, regarding Roy Hodgson's manner of speech. “On this occasion we will not be making an official complaint to the PCC, but we have raised it with the newspaper and made it clear that their front page is unacceptable to us.” Twitter was awash with people furious at the treatment towards Hodgson, and some said that their children, who had similar speech problems, had been bullied.

MARIANO E ZUNINO SIRI Understanding the Law
Email: marianozunino@canarianweekly.com
More about Tourism Law I AM returning to the Tourism Law regarding letting agreements, having received many emails from people concerned about the matter of (fines and penalties etc.
I have most of them, and have found that there is a common pattern in all of them. I have chosen one email which, I consider, would be helpful for all readers and, as usual, I do not mention the name of the sender. I have read all your articles in the Canarian Weekly on law associated with letting apartments in Tenerife/Spain. They are mainly in the defence of or advice for those who are carrying out short lets.
Page 16
However I am on the receiving end from having to put up with neighbours’ lettings. I live for 4-5 months each year in Tenerife on a residential complex. Some of my neighbours rent out their apartments perhaps illegally and perhaps paying no tax to the Spanish authorities on their rental income. Obviously with short holiday lets, the comings and goings of these people cause noise and disruption, and giving little consideration to other resident owners. Is there any way I can contact the authorities who are issuing fines, to inform them? J Thank you very much for your email. I would like to point out that I am not defending or advising the
short-let agreements in my column. My idea is to explain how the law works, or affects the rights of the owners. In many cases, the readers are also landlords asking for advice. Sometimes there are many questions that I consider should be heard, and Canarian Weekly is the best way to make this possible. I assume that you own the property and that your neighbours rent their apartments “perhaps illegally”, and “perhaps paying no tax to the Spanish authorities”. Firstly, I would likd to clarify (in my opinion) that renting an apartment is not illegal from the “civil right point of view” (with exemptions, such as renting for illegal activities). I have explained that in my previous columns. From the “administrative law” point of
view, the matter is different. You can be renting for holidays (short term) which is completely legal from the “civil law” position, but can be “illegal” (or “irregular”) from the “administrative law” position because these holiday rents have to match the Tourism Law. Consequently, the Tourism Board (Consejería de Turismo) of the Canarian Government is the authority which controls these activities. Secondly, regarding the payment of taxes, I have previously explained about all the taxes non-residents have to pay. Among them is the personal income-tax due for owners or property in Spain. You have to distinguish between “property for own use” and “property used for rental”. In both cases, there is a personal income tax to pay
every year. In the second case, the tax is a percentage of the total sum received from the tenant. The authority controlling these taxes is the “Inland Revenue Office” (Spanish State). As you say “perhaps” it could be the situation that your neighbours are not in breach with administrative law or tax law. I agree with you that it is not fair that many non-residents pay taxes and some others do not. I do not completely agree when you say: “Obviously, with short holiday lets, the comings and goings of these people cause noise and disruption and gives little consideration to other resident owners.” That’s because it does not happen in all short holidays lets. Of course, those shortterm lets (and also longterms lets) sometimes cause problems to other residential
owners and also damage the tourism image. It is why the Tourism Board (Consejería de Turismo) is the authority which must control such misbehaviours. I would like to add that the “Consejería de Turismo” is nowadays known for the fines of short-term letting contracts, but there many other activities conducted by this authority to control the tourism quality in hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. Bear also in mind that the “Tourism Law” not only refers to short-term letting contracts but also to many other issues as important as this one. Germany is so handy for Andi
PEOPLE often ask about our Accion del Sol refuge dogs now living in Germany and, s o m e t i m e s, we can provide the perfect answer. For instance, here’s Andi, who went to Germany three years ago as a little pup, and is obviously happy now and flourishing. We have also sent Pinsel, the podenco, to a new home in Germany, but there are still about 30 more podencos awaiting new family. The podencos are of all ages, colours and natures. They make excellent pets, and we urgently need to find them new homes. Please contact us or visit the refuge if you are interested in any of these dogs, or any of the others at the refuge. Hope never dies for the Accion staff, and only last week they were delighted to see the adoption of a dog who had been in the refuge for six years. He had been in a very bad way when taken in from another shelter which had been closed down, but had been restored to full health.
A Belgian couple had been walking the dog over a period of time and had grown very fond of her. They decided they couldn’t bear to be parted from her, so she now will end her days knowing just what a loving, caring home is all about. There wasn’t a dry eye in the refuge the day she left to start her new life, and there are so many other cases which touch the hearts of those working at the refuge. It’s that time of year again when we organise The Teide
Challenge to raise money for Accion del Sol, so if anyone is interested in joining us on the walk to the peak of Mount Teide, then contact 922 778 630 for more information. The date is yet to be confirmed, but it will be around the end of the month. The last two challenges have been successful and previous participants have all agreed that the views were amazing and, overall, it was a wonderful experience. Please call the above number for more information
about the dog sanctuary, or if you would like to help out in any way. Maybe you could do a spot of dog-walking if you have some time on your hands. And any to spare towels and blankets you may have would be much appreciated by our inmates. The refuge is situated at Poligono De Industrial Estate, Granadilla, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER by the windmills, and it is open to the public Monday-Friday, from 3-6pm.

Sky Atlantic HD is proud to announce the exclusive acquisition of Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution’s intriguing new drama Awake, starring Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, Case Histories) as a detective who finds he is leading a complex double life that defies reality. Following the story of Detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) who survives a serious car accident only to find he is living in two parallel worlds; in one world, his wife, Hannah (Laura Allen, Terriers), survives the crash but his son dies and in the other world his son, Rex (Dylan Minnette, Saving Grace) is alive and grieving over the death of his mother. Michael navigates between these two worlds, each populated with its own psychiatrist, police partner and of course, murder cases. Michael quickly discovers that his dual existence is actually a powerful tool and he begins to solve impossible cases by using his two realities to gain unique perspectives and link clues that cross over from world to world. Helping Michael to navigate his two realities are his LAPD-assigned therapists Dr. Evans (Emmy® Award winner Cherry Jones, 24) and Dr. Lee (BD Wong, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit). He is also partnered with either Detective Isaiah “Bird” Freeman (Steve Harris, The Practice) or Detective Efrem Vega (Wilmer Valderrama, That ‘70s Show), who both begin to wonder how Michael is able to connect seemingly unrelated clues. While Michael is understandably reluctant to confront which of the realities is true, hidden memories from the crash begin to surface, forcing him to confront the truth about what really happened.

With the main issues in the Championship fully resolved, Manish Bhasin shifts the focus to Leagues One and Two for the last games of the regular season. In League One, Charlton Athletic have been confirmed as champions and they will be looking to end the season with a flourish at The Valley when they take on Hartlepool. Huddersfield Town are play-off bound, as they were twelve months ago when Peterborough broke their hearts in the final. They are at home to Yeovil and they will be desperate to end the season with a confidence-boosting win that gives them good momentum going into the play-offs. As for League Two, promoted Swindon Town end what has been a wonderful season with a trip to Bradford.
I Love 1977 BBC2, 21:30 Carrie Fisher presents highlights of the pop culture of 1977 - the year in which sci-fi blockbuster Star Wars - in which she played Princess Leia - was released. It also saw Saturday Night Fever make a star of John Travolta and made popular the enduring sound of disco. And the Queen's silver jubilee meant street parties all round, despite the defiance of the Sex Pistols.

Planet Earth Live BBC 1, 7.50pm In the first of a series of programmes, Richard Hammond and Julia Bradbury join the world’s best natural history film-makers for the most ambitious live wildlife series ever undertaken, following the real-time stories of the world’s most charismatic animals around the globe. Experts and cameramen/women from the award winning BBC Natural History Unit combine the spectacular cinematography of Frozen Planet with the live techniques of Big Cat Live and Springwatch to follow real-life animal dramas from around the globe throughout May - a critical time for many of the Earth’s young animals. From baby elephants in Kenya, black bears in Minnesota, macaque monkeys in Sri Lanka, meerkats in South Africa, grey whales in the Pacific to the lions of the Masaai Mara, the lives of many wild youngsters hang in the balance. Expect the unexpected as nature writes the script. Based in southern Kenya, Richard fulfils a childhood dream as he tracks the Marsh pride of lions with camerawoman Sophie Darlington. The group, made famous by Big Cat Diary, is at a crucial time in their history with a pride takeover. A lioness has escaped with the cubs, but with limited food their survival hangs in the balance. In the wild Northwoods of Minnesota Julia Bradbury gets up close and personal with one of the most feared predators on the planet - black bears. She joins expert Dr Lynn Rogers as bear families emerge from their dens with new born cubs. On the Pacific coast she follows the epic migration of grey whales and their calves running the gauntlet of killer whales.
Adam Henson and Ellie Harrison head to Derbyshire, where Adam finds out about the fascinating history of Renishaw Hall and its gardens, and helps to plant a thousand new grapevines on the estate's vineyard. Ellie is in the Peak District National Park where, through motion-triggered cameras, she finds out who, or what, is disturbing the park's groundnesting birds and stealing their eggs. She also visits a churchyard where archaeologists have discovered evidence of a potentially ancient cathedral. Tom Heap looks at new research that seems to show a link between a dramatic fall in bee numbers, and the use of certain pesticides, and Adam returns to his farm in the Cotswolds, where he introduces Eric the bull's calf and shows some children how their supermarket chickens are reared.

The judges aren't easily pleased and only worldclass cooking will do. Just one chef can make it through to the national finals to represent Northern Ireland. If they win, one of their dishes could be on the menu at the Olympic Feast, a stunning dinner hosted by Sir Steve Redgrave, to honour the hopes and achievements of Britain's sporting heroes, willing them on to success in the Olympic Games and celebrating our country's extraordinary culinary talents.

Match of the Day BBC1, 22:25 Gary Lineker introduces highlights of the day's Premier League matches, with the majority of the weekend's top-flight games being held to avoid a clash with the FA Cup final. Newcastle's quest for European qualification sees them host a Manchester City side who inflicted the Magpies' first defeat of the season back in November. Alan Pardew's men have arguably been the surprise package this season, with the likes of Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba and Hatem Ben Arfa giving the Tyneside team real cutting edge. Those three may fancy their chances against Roberto Mancini's side, whose form has dipped in the second half of the season. City have spent the entire campaign battling with title rivals Manchester United, who face Swansea in their final home game of the season. The Swans have not only comfortably avoided relegation, they have also played with style. Their manager, Brendan Rodgers, is unlikely to abandon his passing principles even though the Swans have never won away to United.

ITV1, 10:15pm “The world. It’s a dangerous place. But for 65 years there was a government agency whose one and only job was to protect us from our own stupidity, the Central Office of Information.” Adrian Edmondson delves into the wonderful archives of the Central Office of Information, the government department responsible for making public information films, which is scheduled to close this month. He takes us on a journey through the mini-movies and TV ads that for nearly 70 years have warned us of all kinds of dangers, from road safety to nuclear fallout. They have great nostalgia value for each generation, whether it is Charlie the Cat warning us of the dangers of falling into water, or advising us to ‘clunk click every trip’. These influential films have helped shape attitudes and change the nation’s behaviour. Some are long-form masterpieces of black and white drama with a filmic feel, whilst others are shot like short glossy adverts. Some used humour to great effect, others left children quaking in their boots. The tone was crucial as Ade explains “For over half a century, the Central Office of Information made films alerting us to the dangers of the world. But the images they used had to avoid being overly shocking while at the same time driving home some potentially terrifying messages.” Ade unearths some nostalgic gems and hidden treasures that provide a potted social history of Britain. From “Stranger Danger’ and ‘The Green Cross Code’ in the seventies, to eighties themes such as the dangers of drink-driving, playing with fireworks and sexually transmitted diseases. As he acknowledges “Of all the developed countries, Britain’s £20 million pound campaign was one of the earliest and perhaps partly due to this our HIV rates are still amongst the lowest in the world.” Adrian will also come across the well-known figures that have given their time to keep us safe including Kevin Keegan, Donald Pleasance, Michael Aspel, Alvin Stardust and Ronnie Barker, alongside the characters iconic to our childhood such as Tufty the Squirrel and Joe & Petunia, the fat calamitous tourists. Britain Beware serves up a quirky social history laced with nostalgia to mark the end of a great British institution that did its best to protect us from ourselves.

W C CHOICE Britain's Biggest Hoarders BBC1, 21:00
Documentary meeting compulsive hoarders and looking at the strain the condition can put on their families. TV presenter Jasmine Harman's mum Vasoulla is a compulsive hoarder. This secretive and often shameful psychological condition is putting a big strain on the entire family, and they are not alone. Up to three million British families are affected, but little is known about this disorder, and support isn practically non-existent. In 2011, Jasmine tried to help her mum tackle the extreme clutter, which had taken over the entire family home and compelled her 13 year-old brother to move out. Despite a huge family effort, only a few rooms were tidied. Jasmine searched everywhere for solutions; none seemed forthcoming.
Great British Menu BBC2, 19:30 North West Fish. Returning contenders Johnnie Mountain and Aiden Byrne along with newcomer Simon Rogan compete for the chance to cook at a glittering Olympic banquet. Which one but which one will prevail in the fish course? Johnnie concocts a Recreation of the Sea, while Aiden makes beetroot poached salmon, caviar, razor clam, citrus and fennel salad, and Simon serves up lobster with pickled beetroot, sweet apple and cuckoo flower. Marcus Wareing decides who goes through to the judges at the end of the week. Today sees a shocking result for one chef.

Michael Portillo's Great Euro Crisis. Self-confessed Eurosceptic Michael Portillo is on his way to debt-stricken Greece. He believes that the euro crisis must have shaken the Greeks' faith in Europe's single currency and wonders if there'll be a desire to revert to the free-floating drachma. In Athens he meets everyone from a destitute young family to the former finance minister and the outgoing Prime Minister, and is surprised by some of their answers. Meanwhile in Germany, Europe's economic powerhouse, Michael encounters the taxpayers who are paying most towards Greece's mammoth financial bailout while having to watch angry Athenians burning the German flag.

A revelatory film about the extraordinary archbishop, Cosmo Gordon Lang, who was at the centre of a group of establishment big-wigs and grandees who came together in 1936 to oust King Edward VIII. The archbishop believed that Edward's love for Wallis Simpson, the twice-divorced American, made a mockery of all that he stood for and threatened not just the Crown but the Church of England. Based on a large archive of unpublished diaries, personal notes and Lang's own secret account of the abdication, the film reveals for the first time the machinations that went on behind the scenes to remove the King.

Looking forward to Food on BBC Two BBC Two has announced a whole new range of food programming for the coming year. Not content with just bringing inventive and new ideas to our tables, some of the cooks will also be embarking on lifestyle campaigns and once in a lifetime adventures as BBC Two journeys across the culinary world, exploring food with cooks that are champions of creativity. Janice Hadlow, Controller, BBC Two, says: “BBC Two has a rich heritage of fantastic food programmes, each with the love of great food at its core but also with a sprinkle of something extra. Whether it’s insight into where different foods came from, as in the recent Our Food, how and when they became popular, what they mean to people or a forensic approach to the humble sponge cake in The Great British Bake Off, BBC Two is the place to see passionate people doing great things with mouth-wateringly delicious food.” Looking ahead this autumn Nigella makes her return to BBC Two in Nigellissima, offering up delicious dishes with a distinctively Italian influence. In her new series Nigella takes us on a journey of discovery as she brings her passion for Italian food to the table, reflecting her time living and working in Italy and the lasting influence it has had on her cooking. Alison Kirkham, Commissioning Editor for Features and Formats, BBC One and Two, says: “We are excited to welcome back some of the nation’s best cooks from Nigella and Rick Stein to the Hairy Bikers and Ken Hom for a whole host of new series on the channel. From China to India and back again, the series are entertaining, intelligent and at times intensely personal portrayals of the countries they visit and the food they love.” A little further afield, BBC Two will follow Ken Hom and Ching-He Huang as they return to the land of their origin to eat, drink and cook. Exploring Chinese cuisine, peoples and heritage via food, Ken and Ching will journey deep into China’s traditional and contemporary food culture, and also re-examine their own relationships with the country. Rick Stein will be taking us to India in Rick Stein’s India (working title) to uncover what the word ‘curry’ really means and how differently it can be interpreted as he searches for the definitive answer. But with eyes on our waistlines, New Year’s resolutions a distant memory and the summer in sight, the Hairy Bikers will be urging the nation to join them as they embark on a new slimline life in The Hairy Dieters: How To Love Food And Lose Weight. Using tips and recipes from the British public, the Bikers will encourage you to join them on their quest to lead healthier lives. And finally, for a sweet treat with Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, The Great British Bake Off will be returning for a third series to find Britain’s best amateur baker.

W C CHOICE Shakespeare in Italy BBC2, 21:00
Land of Fortune. Francesco da Mosto takes a look at Italy as the land of adventure and ambition - where fortunes are made and battles are fought. Beginning in Venice with actor Ciaran Hinds, Francesco considers how his home town so renowned for its justice struck Shakespeare as the perfect setting for his disturbing tale of what happens to an outsider who goes against the law in The Merchant of Venice. Heading south to Rome, Francesco discovers how in his great Roman plays Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare used this ancient city as a smokescreen to address the most burning political issues of his day while avoiding trouble with the Elizabethan censors.
Phil Spencer: Secret Agent Channel 4, 20:00 Britain's property boom has been reduced to a whimper. With more homes going unsold than ever before, Phil Spencer wants to help get things moving again. SUE MCDONALD Common Sense Furnishings Email: sue.mcdonald@canarianweekly.com COLOUR is at the heart of all our lives, whether we realise it or not. As a child, you will have had a favourite colour, whether it is the stereotypical pink for girls, blue for boys, or something completely different. Colour surrounds us in the greens and browns of nature; the reds and oranges of the sun and fire; the blues of sky and sea. In previous articles, I have discussed the meaning of colours - how, for example, greens are used in hospitals and TV waiting rooms because the various shades have calming qualities. But they are rarely seen in beauty salons or hairdressers because green is not flattering to the skin. Red on the other hand is a colour associated with the heart, blood and fire, and invokes passion. It stimulates appetites, supposedly, which is why it is often used in restaurants (I’m sure McDonalds will have done a study about that before choosing their corporate colour). Blues, quiet and cool, are associated with water and ice. They can be used far more extensively here in Tenerife because of our warm climate than they are in the UK. They are ideal for bathrooms and bedrooms, using all the tones of baby blues through to darknavy shades. Browns are safe, earthy colours, but they can be dull if you
Gardening at your leisure
Jazz up your life! don’t brighten them up with another accent colour. For all this, you can use any colour you like, and in as strong a version as you like. But it all depends on how you use it. If you have a room with all red walls, it can be quite claustrophobic and overpowering. However, use one red wall and some red cushions on the sofa, and you have a designer effect. Equally, if purple is your chosen colour, use it sparingly because of its rich hue. If you are using an accent colour, don’t go too overboard with it, or the effect will be a bit twee. For those of us who cannot afford to change our interiors
on a whim, the ideal situation is to use a relatively neutral background, such as cream walls and brown and beige sofas. This is very safe but, frankly, a bit dull. In the photos, you can see the effect of introducing a rich orange just in small amounts. Likewise, in the bedroom photos, you can see the change from a tasteful but rather boring room to something with the wow factor! And all with the sparing use of rich colour. Of course, the added advantage is that your core interior is a colour you will always be able to live with, and you could change the accent colour with relatively little effort and cost. So jazz up your interiors and get some colour in your life!
RECENT leisure research released shows that over the last decade, the least affected price of a leisure activity is gardening. Those green fingered families have experienced only a £2.55 (17%) increase, from £15.35 to £17.90, since 2002, that’s over a decade. Gardening doesn’t have to be costly and is a great
family activity, plus, a cheap way to keep fit. Plants don’t have to cost an arm and a leg, many can be grown from cuttings, be divided to make additional plants or naturally spread with great ground coverage. The plant of the moment, due to its drought tolerance is Cistus. It sounds like a painful disease but is a beautiful rockrose, with either pink or white papier mache like blooms. The Cistaceae genus has
been around for hundreds of years, and now there are about twenty different types. These perennial shrubs are found on dry, rocky soils throughout the Mediterranean region including here in the Canaries. They are evergreen, with five petals on their flowers. Known by its common name Rockrose the pretty plant is easy to grow here and does not need a lot of maintenance, give it a go.

CARL PATTISON
DEAR CHRISTINE
from Robot, Los Cristianos answers your hair questions
No going back? I HAVE just been listening to a fellow professional, and his views on customers returning to the salon and voicing their views when they’re are unhappy with the treatment they have received. I was quite shocked to hear that he and his colleagues don’t seem to like it when you, the paying client, complains only to be thought of as a pain, or be told you have no right to do so. I totally understand that most clients don’t seem to want to say that they not happy with something while they are in the salon. You need time to adjust to your new look or beauty treatment. And if things aren’t what they seem, or you are unhappy, then you have every right to call into the salon to discuss it with your stylist, or whoever served you. And this applies in your salon, your local store, or any public outlet. I’d rather clients told me that they aren’t happy, or things need modifying. How else can I keep my clients happy if they don’t feel they can approach me to tell me? Okay, I realise that most “complaints” aren’t really complaints, but these are genuine clients, and have their reasons for saying :“I’m not happy with, whatever.” It is up to us as professionals to deal with this and not just think, Oh, Mrs Smith is moan-
ing”, or, “She never looked after her hair and look what’s happened.” It’s all about educating your clients, no matter what your business, and letting them know that you are approachable to tackle whatever problem they may have. I have just been helping a woman who has had a dreadful experience in a local salon. I’m not going into details, but let’s just say I was appalled at what had been done to her hair. No, we didn’t carry on the drama by pulling to pieces the work of another stylist. Instead, we talked sensibly about how she should approach the stylist concerned about how to resolve the matter. There’s no point running into the salon screaming because this gets you nowhere, and makes the stylist less likely to help you. Calmly explain your issue and wait for your stylist to re-
spond. I’m quite sure that anyone with an ounce of professionalism will want to resolve the problem amicably, or give you more advice on how you can actually sort the matter out, or prevent it happening again. We are all human, and humans make many mistakes, and that’s why no one walking this earth can say that he or she is perfect. We all need the chance to rectify our mistakes, but we can only do this if we are told. about them. So don’t be afraid to speak to your stylist and ask questions about the service you have received, because that’s what we are here for. Don’t feel that you will be turned away if you say you’re not happy with something. If this is the case and you don’t get the service you expect and deserve, then think twice about returning to that salon.
Your resident Agony Aunt Email: agony.aunt@canarianweekly.com Dear Christine, My wife and I have lived in Tenerife for four months, and I thought we were happy here. But last week she dropped a bombshell when she said she desperately misses our family in the UK and wants us to go back. I love it here and would hate to go back, and I told her so. Now she’s barely speaking to me. What do you suggest I do? Tony You’ve found yourself in a common situation. Lots of people move overseas and not all of them settle. However, as four months is not long on which to base such a massive decision, I suggest that you ask her very kindly to give it another six months. If you avoid putting pressure on her, the extra time may make all the difference to the way she sees things. In the meantime, tell your family how much they are being missed and encourage them to visit as often as possible. It might also be a useful exercise for you and your wife to each make a list of the pro’s and con’s of living in Tenerife, versus the pro’s and con’s of living in the UK. This might show her she’s actually getting a lot more out of life here than she realised. On the other hand, it may show you that there was more for you in the UK than you realised! If, after six months, your wife is still as desperate to return, I’m afraid you will have to decide which means more to you – your relationship or your life in Tenerife.
Dear Christine, My boyfriend and I are both 20 and love each other madly. Last year, we dated for seven months, but he got clingy and controlling when I was sent to Spanish classes with a guy I work with. I felt I had to finish with him, but he got really aggressive, broke a window at my (ground floor) apartment and shouted horrible things so the neighbours could hear him. He never hurt me physically, though. I still live with my parents and because of all that happened, they think he’s no-hoper. My friends do as well. I met this guy by accident in March and since then we have been talking a lot. He’s explained that he was heartbroken when we split up and it came out as aggression. He’s grown up a lot and really changed, and we’d love to give it another go. He’s like an addiction to me and I am to him. We can’t live without each other. Trouble is, my mum has gone mental over me even being friends with him again and is threatening to throw me out. I love my mum and don’t want her to be upset, but I also love this guy. What should I do? Miss I Because your parents and friends want you to be well and happy, they can’t easily forget how controlling and aggressive this lad was - and not too long ago.
It’s all very well you forgiving him, but if you are contemplating getting back with him, the pair of you need to discuss how he might react in the type of situation he responded badly to before. You should also tell him what you are and aren’t willing to put up with, and mean it, too! “One strike and you’re out” is a useful motto in these circumstances. I have to admit that big alarm bells ring for me when you say that you and this guy are addicted to each other. Addictive love isn’t healthy. It means that each of you is likely to pretend that things are okay and sweep negative feelings under the carpet just so you can stay together. That doesn’t bode well for your mutual problemsolving skills; nor does it suggest that either of you has a healthy degree of self-confidence. It might be a good idea to read a few books on building your self-esteem, or even have confidence-building sessions with a trained counsellor. For instance, Andrea Greenhalgh is a qualified private counsellor in Las Americas. Her website is w w w. a n d r e a g r e e n h a l g h counselling.co.uk or tel 659 054 745. I’d advise letting your mum know that you’re glad she is looking out for you. She’s right to have doubts and, if you decide to give this guy a second chance, tell her your ground-rules for the relationship. Assuring her that you’re serious about the rules should put her at her ease. Good luck.
Christine Craggs-Hinton is the author of 20 self-help books, including ‘Coping with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome’, ‘Eating Disorders and Body Image’ and ‘Natural Treatments for Arthritis’. Her books are available from all good UK bookshops, as well as ‘The Paper Shop’, Apolo Centre and ‘Bookswop’, Edificio Cristianos 1, both of which are in Los Cristianos.

VAL SAINSBURY Keeping her finger on the pulse Email: val.sainsbury@canarianweekly.com DOCTORS fighting to deliver life-saving vaccines to the developing world have criticised British mothers who refuse to vaccinate their children. Ghana has celebrated the introduction of two new vaccines to prevent pneumonia and diarrhoea, which are two of the biggest child-killers worldwide. The unprecedented simultaneous introduction, supported by millions of pounds of British foreign aid, will help save the lives of around 11,000 children a year. Teams of medics have begun delivering the vaccines to infants in health centres across the West African nation in an immunisation programme
Doctor bewildered by the anti-jab mothers driven by governments and philanthropists, including America’s Bill Gates. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI)-funded project means the pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines will be given to every child born in Ghana from now on. It comes as UK medics face sustained opposition to child vaccination, amid fears of sideeffects and mistrust of the
pharmaceutical industry. Dr KO Antwi-Agyei said a vaccination programme could become a victim of its own success. The EPI (expanded programme on immunisation) manager for Ghana said: “We used to have a terrible problem with measles. When we talk about these diseases being the greatest killers of children, what we are really talking about is babies. “They are killers of babies
aged a year and under. Many babies were dying from measles; we would do our best for them yet they would still die. It was a horrible situation, yet a vaccine could and did prevent it. “It has now been nine years since the last measles death and we are at a transition stage.” He added: “Here, as in the UK, we have new mothers who have never seen the havoc the disease can cause. And when
people have no longer seen its effects, it is difficult to convince them vaccination is necessary. We have to fight it. People must not forget how things have changed.” The latest official figures, from 2008, show pneumonia and diarrhoea-related infections each account for 10% of deaths
of under-five in Ghana. Access to healthcare in the tropical nation’s rural areas is limited, making the prevention of these diseases by vaccination a priority. Educating the people of the benefits was as important as the delivery of the medicine itself, said Dr Antwi-Agyei.

Women who refuse to use suncream taking a chance ALMOST a quarter of British women do not plan to use suncream on their summer holidays abroad. A survey by Macmillan Cancer Support covering 1,500 females, conducted ahead of Sun Awareness Week, revealed that 22% do not wear creams to protect them from UV rays when abroad. The most common reasons given were that they do not burn, that it is too expensive

or that they do not believe it actually works. Almost half said they thought using after-sun cream corrected some of the damage done to their skin. Macmillan Information Nurse specialist Carol Goodman said: “As people are preparing to go abroad for their annual holiday, it is very concerning that these British women are putting themselves at risk of skin cancer by not wearing any
suntan lotion. “They should be made aware that over 2,500 people die of skin cancer every year, and so it is a real issue.” Macmillan advises applying sun cream half-an-hour before going into the sun, and then applying a second layer once it has sunk into the skin. That’s to ensure a person gets the protection the bottle suggests, and it should then be reapplied every hour.

The Terrific IMITATION is the highest form of flattery, and, with the incredible number of Teppanyaki restaurants appearing in the south of Tenerife, it was time for the original to reassert itself.
And so, from the highlysuccessful Slow Boat Teppanyaki emerges the newly-branded Imperial Tai Pan. This restaurant exudes class in every detail, whether it’s the decor, the uniforms, the lighting, the service or, obviously, the superb cuisine, no stones have been left unturned in their quest to give the diner the ultimate experience. We were greeted by Alex and shown to our seats (good idea to book as it gets really busy here), and he took our drinks order while we checked out the menu. Now, with the namechange also comes a revised menu, with over 70 new dishes and many variations to give even old favourites a different spin. This demonstrates that they really have put a lot of time and care into the choices they have made. Onwards to the food, and we decided to order from the main Chinese menu. That’s because next week, we are birthdaying
at the teppanyaki table and wanted to try that as a group.
There are many, many choices in starters and main courses, so we picked A survey by Horizon Menurama shows that we still love traditional favourites with beef burgers topping the list, followed by pizza and fish ‘n’ chips. Also included were steak, chicken curry and roast dinner. Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck restaurant has fallen out of the world’s top 10 best restaurants list, but, his new London restaurant, Dinner has been voted the ninth best restaurant in the world in an influential survey of hundreds of food experts. Blumenthal is now effectively the most successful chef in the world because he’s the only one to have more than one restaurant in the top 15. The municipality of Granadilla has created its own gastronomic route “De gofio por Granadilla “, where participating restaurants offer various dishes using the typical flour – gofio, in an attempt to boost and promote local cuisine in the area. Pasteleria Diaz in Santa Cruz have come up with a treat especially for adults. The bakeries have produced white and red wine gums called “goVinolas” made from glucose syrup, apple pectin and Tenerife wines. The sweets cost 2.50 euros for 10.

Tai Pan hits spot the brains of Alex to recommend some of the new additions - and we weren’t disappointed. He also pointed out that if you are a sushi lover, this is the place to be. And with 20 new dishes added to the already-huge choice, he wasn’t kidding. However, on this occasion we were ordering from the gourmet Chinese menu so, with chopsticks in hand we begin the feast.
First to the table was the War Tip: four North China steamed pork dumplings, griddled and stuffed with sweet cabbage and seasoned pork, perfectly cooked and extremely succulent and tasty. They were closely followed by fresh, steamed scallops in our choice (there are three) of ginger and spring-onion topping; so many flavours in one dish, but each one complementing the next.
With Char sui honey roast rack of ribs to finish our choice of starters, and the meat just falling from the bone - plus the flavours from the char sui marinade, honey and sesame seeds all blending into one taste explosion - it made us think that all three starters were the perfect choice for us. The main courses were no exception to flavours and texture, either: for

my partner, a fabulouslyprepared sea bass, coated in a feather-light tempura batter and served in a rich, spicy, black-bean sauce on a bed of rice. This was beautifully cooked, and the pure, white meat had the unmistakeable flakiness synonymous with this tasty fish. Incredible! For me, crispy fragrant duck. This was a sliced
half-duck, crisped on the outside, and with the taste of moist meat in the centre, mixing with the red wine and black pepper Peking sauce, it really hit the mark on every level. Dessert for me (you must know me by now) came in the form of a homemade, three-chocolate cheesecake, served with ice cream and cream - very morish.
For my partner a cheeky, Secret Squirrel cocktail, which provided a fresh and fruity end to a wonderful meal. So to all at Imperial Tai Pan, from the waiting staff to the chefs, from the bar staff to the management, thank you for a glorious evening. We will be back sooner than you think! See advert page 11

Brits get away for long June Jubilee weekend
WITH only one month to go, it’s estimated that over 6m Brits, that’s one in ten of the UK population will be taking advantage of the long Queen’s Jubilee bank holiday weekend, 2 - 5 June 2012, by going on holiday. With the bank holidays falling on Monday and Tuesday, many office workers will be taking advantage of the opportunity to take three days off to get nine straight days off work. In the survey, 4% said they intended to head overseas for the bank holiday, which is similar to Easter travel numbers and it is likely that the roads, air and ferry ports will all be extremely busy. 18-24 year olds are the most likely to use the
extended weekend as a holiday opportunity with 12% of them taking a UK or foreign break. Not all of us will be holidaying, with 40% using the time off to relax at home. One in ten (11%) of us will be going into work as normal, with 35-44 year olds the most likely to have to go to work. Mark Tanzer ABTA Chief Executive said:“The country clearly has a great deal of affection for the Queen with millions intending to have a Jubilee party. The extended June bank holiday will also provide a shot in the arm for the British travel industry with six million intending to take a break in the UK or overseas. Like last year’s Royal Wedding, the Jubilee shows that extra bank holidays not only give us a chance to recharge our batteries but also give an extremely welcome boost to tourism and many parts of the wider economy.”

ON THE ROAD WITH JAV Behind the Wheel
Email: Jav@canarianweekly.com THE baby Mercedes SLS, which made its debut at last week’s Beijing Motor Show as the Concept Style Coupe (CSC), has been given the goahead for a 2014 launch. The new, slightly smaller supercar will be available in coupe and roadster guise, and it will be front-engined after an earlier, brief dalliance with a mid-engined set-up. Gorden Wagener, Mercedes’ Head of Design, confirmed plans for the car and its name at the Show. He also said that the production version of the CSC would be renamed the CLA. While explaining the company’s three-pronged design strategy, Wagener said: “There is traditional design for cars like the S-Class, progressive design for vehicles like the CLA and dynamic design for the SLS and SLC.” There has been much speculation surrounding an £80,000 Mercedes sports car to rival the Porsche 911 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage. But this is the first time a leading official has confirmed its existence. The car is believed to be a joint venture between Mercedes and its AMG division. To keep costs down, the

SLC is unlikely to feature gullwing doors, and Wagener suggested that a coupe version of the ML 4x4 is also in the pipeline. The BMW X6 rival would be part of a new breed of Sports Utility Coupes, the first of
which will probably use the new A-Class platform. The SLC is scheduled for 2014 and meanwhile, there will be two more versions of the SLS, the first of which will be the Black Series in July. And the CLS Shooting Brake
will be unveiled later this year, followed by the CLA and a new S-Class in 2013. The company’s flagship luxury car will be the first model in the line-up to get Merc’s new ‘black box’ technology, which will enable
them to monitor each car’s health via the Internet, allowing the early detection of any potential mechanical problems. The SLC will not accommodate the expected new AMG-tuned twin-turbo
V6, as CAR reported earlier, but the faithful V8, which is mated to the familiar dualclutch transmission. It is still early days for this programme, but the grapevine suggests that instead of the big-bore 5.4- or 6.3-litre V8 units, project R190 (the official codename) will, in fact, feature a brand-new, downsized 4.0-litre V8. That’s because after BMW and VW/Audi, MB is also about to switch to a new engine generation with a standardised 500cc-percylinder displacement. As a result, there will soon be only 2.0-litre fours, 3.0-litre sixes and 4.0-litre V8s. But who knows how they will be badged, though, Merc labels having long since lost much bearing on the actual capacity under bonnet. The V12 and the old-school three-cylinder will eventually be phased out, and the allnew three for Smart and the A-class will be supplied by Renault-Nissan.
Merc’s M in special Class IT has been a long time since Mercedes built a genuinely class-leading SUV, but that could be about to change with the arrival of the new V6 diesel version of the M-Class. As you’d expect from a Mercedes, the ML 350 CDI is also superbly quiet and refined, and the ride is smooth, even on the sporty, 19-inch alloys. And it’s a great long-distance car. Outside, it looks imposing, with an AMG styling pack which includes side skirts and 19-inch alloys as standard. It is also longer and wider than before, so it matches rivals such as the BMW X5 and
04 May - 10 May 2012
Porsche Cayenne for road presence. In addition, the luxurious interior feels much smarter
and better built than the outgoing models. A long list of standard equipment includes climate-control, sat-
nav and durable, artificial, leather upholstery. The efficient new fourcylinder ML 250 grabbed
the headlines at the launch, but the majority of UK cars will still be powered by the revised 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine. Push the accelerator and it’s easy to see why. With 255bhp and a whopping 620Nm of torque on tap, the ML 350 provides truly effortless performance in any of its seven gears. It shrugs off its two-tonne bulk and sprints from 0-62mph in just 7.4 seconds, yet it also claims nearly 40mpg and emits 189g/ km of CO2 which are major improvements over the old car’s 32.5mpg and 230g/km. And the engine makes only a muted roar under acceleration and fades into the background when cruising on the motorway. Around corners, it’s also
more agile than the old version, thanks to a more precise steering system. Although it doesn’t have the pin-sharp dynamics of a Cayenne or X5, it is a more comfortable choice than either of those. The M-Class doesn’t have seven seats like a Land Rover Discovery, but there is room for five adults and plenty of luggage as well. And the seats can be folded flat for a maximum 2,010 litres of storage room, which is extremely impressive. Factor in the wide range of off-road gadgets, such as the clever hill-descent system, and you have a great allrounder. And with prices ranging from £39,583-£46,234, this is bound to be a winner with the Mercedes set.

POOL LEAGUE
Hammers and Superstars get to taste that Toddys success!
On table one, Tenerife Hammers A and Trap Door locked horns in the final of the Toddys Gold Label Cup.
They drew in the league last week, and there was nothing to choose between them early on. The first few frames were nervy affairs that could have gone either way. Target Bar had their chances, but the Hammers had the rub of the green. After losing the opener, they ground out the next few
frames. Grant and then Rob had little luck for Target as they lost their frames, and the Hammers were comfy at 3-1. They took both doubles rubbers to lead 5-1 at the break. This gave Fritzel the chance for glory, and he controlled his frame, sunk the winning black and gave the Hammers their first-ev-

er Cup win. Trap Door took a couple of dead rubbers to give the final score some respectability at 7-3. Over on table two, the Toddys Gold Label Plate final was like a bad Fifties song. Shakes, rattles ’n’ rolls! Summerland Superstars have been in finals before, but it was a first for Trap Door. They came into the match as the hottest side in the league, with many shrewdies tipping them for glory. But it never happened for them. They started well enough, going 2-1 up, but the nerves racked them all night. Marcus, Mickey and Dave all missed pots they would normally get with their eyes closed, and even though Superstars jawed a few, they were much more composed. Ultimately the Superstars’ two wins in the doubles, again after some unbelievable misses from Trap Door, proved to be the difference. As with the Cup final, Summerlands got to the winning line before dropping some late frames. The 6-4 win was a fair reflection, but the Trap Door lads will be shaking their heads all summer. They must now refocus on their efforts to finish third in the league. And in that competition, Bar Tasca secured their top-flight status as they beat Legends 7-3. Meanwhile in Division Three, it’s all to play for in the race to join Gaffers B in the play-offs. Gaffers’ win over Exiles B ended the Silencio lads’ chances after they also lost a make-up match with C&A Titans. The Titans needed that win as they lost 6-4 to Dos Hermanos, who may still have a squeak at the postseason action. The Treehouse are also in conten-

Perona hat-trick inspires CD CD Tenerife 3 Real Oviedo 0 ON Sunday, CD Tenerife produced the performance the fans have waited all season to see. The one positive in relegation is the understanding that results and performances should improve the following year. I'm sure there is a scientific formula based on it. While the former has been true, the latter hasn’t. Sure, there have been a few. Vecindario in the first match, Toledo and the win over Castilla spring to mind, but there hasn’t been that thumping: the game where the match was dead with half-an-hour to go. No defining win. Well we have it now! Oviedo turned up ready for a row. Well, technically they turned up late, barely an hour before kick-off. I mentioned in the commentary on Oasis Fm that this might be a problem, and Tenerife used this to their advantage. The visitors would constantly change their formation, which would prove to be their downfall. It has been a very long time since I’ve seen a side so
high up in a table, so disorganised at the back. This led to chaos and the first goal after 11 minutes. Oviedo’s defenders were nervy on the ball, and Owona clearly didn’t want a pass from Aitor. The right-back looked at his keeper as the ball arrived and didn’t see Perona. He nicked the ball, looked up and struck a left-foot shot underneath Lledo. Owona could do nothing more than shake his head as Perona celebrated in front of the Armada Sur kop. It was a howler, but it had been on the cards. Tenerife were bright, sharp and committed - not words you could always level at the team. But with a large crowd, a hot sunny day and a mustwin encounter, they produced their best. And made it look so effortless. Kitoko was bossing midfield, showing how much he was missed over the last two months, while Aridane gave the Oviedo centre-backs nightmares. He was busy, aggressive and … and … everything he hasn’t been this season. It was bizarre. Tenerife just didn’t look like Tenerife. They created plenty of chances, but there was always a feeling that Oviedo

had a goal or two in them. Nano served notice when his free-kick struck a post and Martins managed to miss from three yards when it seemed easier to score.

While Aragoneses can take the credit for a fine save on that one, there was no excuse for Rubiato. He produced the biggest miss I have EVER seen. Go to YouTube and enjoy because it was a belter. Tenerife had a corner which Oviedo cleared and Nano was away. It was three against two as he charged into the box. He drew Aragoneses and, with Llorente running for the goalline, Nano squared the ball along the six-yard area. There was Rubiato unmarked. Well, apart from his team-mate Jandrin, who was just behind him. Two players. One ball and one undefended goal. I swear I am not exaggerating when I tell you that Rubiato nearly hit the corner flag. The miss deflated Oviedo and just before the break, the game was up. Chechu had been a menace all afternoon, but there seemed little danger when he swung in a regulation cross. But remember what I said at the top. The defence was all over the place and for some reason, the centre-
backs double-teamed Aridane and forgot about Perona. Unmarked, he had all the time in the world to head the ball past the luckless Lledo. In the technical area, Jose Rojo was apoplectic. He is a fiery character when he is in a coma. He must have unleashed the proverbial hairdryer treatment at half-time as his side took the game to Tenerife in the second half. Yet Tenerife stood firm. Oviedo were reduced to long-range shots - and when they were denied a stonewall penalty, they knew it was not their day. From a corner, Aragoneses punched Juanma with both fists when the ball was nowhere near. It was so good, I would take him to beat Audley Harrison! The ref waved play on, and even had to be cajoled into allowing the physio to come on. Minutes later, Negredo lost the plot and tugged Perona’s shirt to give the ref no option but to point to the spot.
Oveido argued long and hard and, while they had a point, it was nice to see Tenerife get the rub of the green for a change. Perona duly stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to complete the perfect hat-trick: Left foot, right foot and header! With Lugo and Albacete dropping points, it leaves Tenerife nicely placed and still on for a second-spot finish. This weekend they should get the win they need to guarantee their play-off place when they travel to nothing-to-play-for Marino. Horoscopes of the week Taurus
(April 21st - May 21st) New people appear to play a more important role in your week. You seem to be under some nervous strain and tend to let trivial irritations get on top of you. Try to get your priorities right and make the most of your opportunities to relax and enjoy yourself. After all, if you don’t think you’re worth the time, why should anyone else? GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) A lot of friction is apparent with someone in your surroundings, and it would be best if you could avoid him or her completely for a while. Healthwise, you may be feeling a little below par, and a little more time spent on doing what feels right is sure to have a positive effect. CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd) Your impatience to get things done could cause you to make a mistake or forget something important, so think things through properly before you act. A great deal seems to be happening on the social scene, and you may have some difficultly getting everything done. You meet someone who gives you reason to want to excel after Monday. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) Things may not go according to plan and you may have to change your way of thinking and adopt new methods. Keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to make changes. It’s not as if you haven’t been in the situation to see the cracks. Some sort of parting is indicated, which may leave you at a bit of a loose end. New attractions beckon from Sunday. VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd) Your social life appears to brighten up considerably, and you will be coming into contact with some really interesting people. Affairs of the heart are especially

favoured in the coming week. You should be feeling particularly energetic and healthy and can get a lot of work done - if you put your mind to it LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) You’re in for quite a revelation as you start to be more honest with yourself about what you want and need from a partner. Financial pressures appear to be particularly heavy just now and you will have to budget carefully for an upcoming event or trip. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) Some sort of a change is indicated in the life of someone close to you which has a knockon effect on your own day to day routine. Make sure that you are in charge of shaping what you do or do not do. If you don’t do it this week, you may never get the chance. Business meetings arranged for Monday prove highly successful. S AG I T TA R I U S (November 23rdDecember 21st) Make a special effort to participate in the activities around you, even though you may not feel like it as you could be missing out on a lot by being lethargic. An important event which takes place early in the week takes your emotions to a whole new level, and we see you growing and evolving as a person because of it. C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) Lots of travel is written in your stars, but don’t

worry because you’re sure to benefit every time from any trips you make, on both a personal and a professional basis.
