HEROES Tenerife fire-fighters brave forest fires for five days
OVER 500 members of the various emergency services battled bravely throughout the ferocious five-day blaze to bring it under control. It threatened to run riot, but cool heads from the fire-fighters on the ground and air support, ensured there was little hint of panic throughout the villages and areas affected. The perimeter of the fire, which began on Sunday afternoon, covers 41 kilometres, of which 12km are still burning. The entire blaze enveloped an area of 5,200 hectares, 1,000 of which were seriously affected. But there were no reports of casualties, and these gallant workers will continue to battle to keep a damper on the situation over the next few days until normality - as much as possible - is restored. Good news for everyone at last! AS WE GO TO PRINT, Tenerife Cabildo announced at its latest press conference that little has changed since Wednesday evening, adding that work is progressing as hoped, and that the news is all good. Residents of Tijoco Alto, Ifonche and now Vilaflor have been allowed back to their homes. Electricity has been restored, but the water supply is still being worked on. 8am: Ricardo Melchior and Javier Gonzalez Ortiz, report that the fire has been stabilised overnight, with less than onethird of the 41km perimeter still active. Ortiz Gonzalez stressed that last night was “quiet” and that the fire “has evolved as The fire is much more stable, and fire-fighting efforts will continue to focus on areas that could pose a threat to the local population. There is no way officials will estimate how long it will take to extinguish the blaze fully, but they say a lack of significant wind has been a great help in maintaining control. They also credit the work of the seaplanes in keeping the Guia de Isora front stabilised, adding that Chirche remains safe.
planned on both the east and west side”. However, maintaining the alert at level 2 remains necessary in order to keep certain security measures in place, said the Minister. “The situation has improved substantially from last night,” he added. The front, from Boca Tauce to Vilaflor, is under control, as are the areas of Vilaflor, Ifonche and La Quinta, while it is stabilised at Chasobo. There is still fire at La Quinta, but it is moving very slowly downwards. There is also some activity in the region between Chirche and La Quinta, but advice is that this will soon be controlled. Melcior said reassuringly: “There’s always a flip side, but the news is good, as long as care is taken. And right now, the fire is stabilised with only a perimeter of 12km still to be brought under control. The airborne brigades will be working on doing that this
morning, since the areas are virtually impossible to reach on the ground. “Surveillance of the remaining areas of fire will continue, along with clearance of small sections of the fire. The ground is still too hot to get right into the affected areas with the military EMU and local firefighters.” The Cabildo congratulated everyone involved in managing the disaster, commenting that everything went as planned, and that today should see the situation stabilise in Guía de Isora, “barring any complications”. Melchior added: “I feel very proud to have such professional people working
THE perimeter of the ferocious blaze, which began on Sunday afternoon, covers 5,200 hectares, 1,000 of which have been seriously affected by the fire. Of those 1,000 hectares, some 500 are pine forest, and this area, which is completely destroyed, represents 1% of the Island’s total forest land.

non-stop.” He thanked the collaboration of the mayors, such as Mayor Fumero of Vilaflor, who acted with calmness, as well as those of Adeje, Guía and Arona, each one responsible for all relevant sites in their control, willingly accepting orders from the directors of the fire. He also thanked the collaboration of various private companies, who have selflessly served and sent materials and supplies. Ana Lupe Mora, Cabildo Environment Minister, said the ban remains on activities in the forests and recreational areas of the Island. “The council will sanction anyone who disobeys these fire prohibitions,” she warned.
Paulino Rivero, Canarian Government President, visited affected areas and talked to local residents, to whom he pledged that his government would do all it could to aid the recovery of the affected areas. Despite the good news, all the troops are still working because, as Melchior said: “We have not dropped our guard.”
“It is our responsibility to enforce prohibitions on forests and recreational areas.” 1pm: Javier González Ortíz said there was lots of smoke still around, but nowhere near as much as previously. José Antonio Valbuena, Cabildo Vice-President, said the TF-21 and TF38 would remain closed until the weekend as a precautionary measure, and to allow unhindered access for emergency vehicles. The biggest change has been in the deployment of the fire-fighting teams. Once the more populated areas were secured, all resources were sent to the west flank. The active front is progressing slowly, but remains in the set perimeter. The outlook is positive on the West Flank; the fire should die out as it goes west - if it is not put out first. There will be hot spots
in certain areas (Valbuena indicated the north-east edge of the perimeter) but it is impossible to predict when and where. Ground forces are covering the perimeter. Local Chirche resident Mark Tubbs told Canarian Weekly what it was like last night, saying: “The sheer scale of the smaller fires that were rolling down the last remaining hills between the “big” fire and our house made them seem so close that you could touch them. “You could certainly feel their heat and smell the ever-present tang of their smoke. The wind strengthened and turned in our vulnerable direction. “The sky rivalled Mordor (location in Lord of the Rings) in its menacing intensity. But this is real. This really isn’t entertainment.”

The blaze begins ... and races out of control rapidly IFONCHE, a small village in the Municipality of Adeje, is popular with walkers and paragliders. On Sunday afternoon, it became the fire’s starting point. It was a wild-fire burn, which continued for four days until it was brought under control. In its wake, however, it left an area of 5.200 affected hectares (2.5 acre equals 1 hectare approx). Initially the fire, which began on agricultural land, was deemed a Level 1 incident. It is thought that a farmer was burning stubble, but there still remain concerns that the fire may have been started deliberately. Because of the weather conditions last weekend, a Yellow Alert had just been put in place, warning of higher-
than-usual temperatures, This, coupled with tinder-dry undergrowth through lack of any significant rain, fuelled the fire. At around 5pm, at the junction of the TF51/TF567, the road to Ifonche, about 6km above Arona old town, was closed to traffic. That was to enable fire crews to transport water from local reservoirs to fight the fire, and thick, dense smoke billowed over the Adeje hillside. By Sunday evening, the scenario had escalated to a Level 2 incident and, alarmingly, had spread through the high ground of Adeje municipality to the Barranco de Infierno, where the skyline glowed fiercely. So much so that, throughout the night, flames could be seen with the naked eye. The Ifonche, Taucho and La Quinta areas were all evacuated on Sunday.
Ifonche is a picturesque, rural landscape of scattered hamlets and agricultural terraces in the Adeje region. On 19th June 1987,the tiny village, with less than 100 inhabitants, was declared a protected area. It has boundaries to the north and west of the Corona Forestal Nature Park and the Barranco del Infierno’s special nature reserve. Pictures from Sunday when the fire started. Photos: Ian Marshall

M O N D AY AM: Latest reports on the fire show that it now has a 1,100-hectare perimeter, with 400 hectares already destroyed. 1PM: 1,800 hectares now on fire, and the Canarian Government has issued a warning advising visitors not to travel up to El Teide until further notice. The fire is now affecting the municipalities of Vilaflor and Adeje. A decision was made this morning to evacuate the area of Tijoco Alto as a preventative measure. Seven helicopters are now working to contain the blaze - four from the Canaries and three sent in by the Madrid Government. Smoke fills the air in the high lands of the south, and fears have been expressed by the authorities that the blaze is gradually edging closer to the tree line. It has already reached one of the Island’s protected beauty spots, the Barranco del Infierno. Further fire-fighters are being drafted in. Ninety-four people have been evacuated from Ifonche and Tijoco Alto; the majority secured shelter with friends
and family in the town of Guía de Isora. The fire was said to be progressing on two flanks, but there was no considerable threat at this time. However, progress by fire-fighters was also said to be slow, and the terrain makes access difficult for teams on the ground. There are seven airborne assistance units, as well as military assistance for the UME (Emergency Military Unit). Teams representing the Red Cross, the Environment Agency, professional and voluntary firefighters, the Guardia Civil, the Emergency Military Unit and the helicopter crews are all involved in the effort. The fire is heading towards Teide National Park, and is being fought on two fronts, from Guía de Isora and Vilaflor. An emergency military unit from Gran Canaria has been drafted in to participate in the fire-fighting. The fire is dangerous and complicated, says Adeje’s Mayor. 4.45pm: Emergency services are setting a “backfire” on the TF-21 to prevent it from spreading to populated areas in the East. It’s heading towards Teide National Park this morning to control the lower flanks have been successful, but the fire is still continuing to make progress to the upper areas. When it reaches that level, it could split into a further two fronts.
Six helicopters are currently discharging water in the areas. A mobile disaster unit (UMCAT) has been put on standby in case it is needed.
8pm: The Left Flank is being contained by several units, including voluntary firemen, and the lower Right Flank (which has become a higher priority
because of its proximity to populated areas) is where the efforts are being intensified. The upper side of the Right Flank is under control. The teams will continue to work through the night.
T U E S D A Y Air supply helping AM: THE heat and low humidity made fighting the fire more difficult overnight. The wind did not get stronger during that period, which was a small relief. Two planes arrived from the mainland, and air operations began at first light. The fire remains out of control on the Right Flank, but the outlook is more positive, thanks to the extra air support. Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior said it was a complicated situation but that all were working “admirably”. He then said: “We must hope that, despite the forecast of high temperatures and moderate winds, we can continue to make progress.” The fire did not advance significantly during the
night, but at one point the forces had to abandon their positions because of the extreme danger. They resumed at 4am on the upper part between Vilaflor and Boca Tauce. The fire line had advanced approximately 200 metres, but efforts have now intensified there. Chief fire officer Ventura Machado declines to comment on what area the perimeter of the fire now covers until a full assessment has been made (which was impossible in the dark). This incident remains at Level 2. There are now 500 people fighting the fire on two fronts. In a separate report, there is a finca (small farm) in Vera de Erque, whose proprietor has decided to stay put along
with the goats. In the report, the plumes of smoke were visible, but quite a way away from the finca. The fire has changed direction and is now on three fronts: Guía De Isora, Vilaflor and La Orotava. In Vilaflor it is metres from the village and a petrol station! Residents are being asked if they wish to leave but it’s not a full evacuation. 1pm: Three planes have arrived, and they are capable of carrying 1,500 litres of water at each pass. There is some concern about the fire’s boundary around Guayero, but the most complicated front is around Barranco de Erques. The wind had changed direction. which means that
the Right Flank is now less stable than before. The Left Flank is relatively stable, apart from the high-altitude areas above Guía de Isora. Umberto Gutiérrez, technical director, said that efforts were being concentrated on the Right Flank at present. The fire has encroached “by a few metres” into La Orotava and Teide National Park, but this was played down at the press conference. 3pm: Reporting from La Escalona, on the outskirts of the blaze in Vilaflor, Canarian Weekly can confirm that the Right Flank of the fire appears to be advancing, and it is still threatening the town. are at the ready and the army is assisting fire-fighters on the ground. From here, on the road up to Vilaflor from La Escalona, the fire seems to be completely out of control and moving closer to Spain’s highest village, despite continued efforts of the hundreds of personnel. Residents in Vilaflor received their first warning yesterday by Guardia Civil: they could leave the village if they wished, and some left last night. If they receive a second warning today, then an evacuation is obligatory. There is currently a fire on the left-hand side as you go into Vilaflor, where all the

efforts are being concentrated; flames are just coming over the hill. The danger is that it will set alight the pine trees surrounding the whole village. If this is the case, then there are accessibility problems. In addition, the temperature is 40 degrees Celsius. The fire is almost at the road in places, and a local resident suggests that it will shortly be closed entering into Vilaflor. There is more than one fire, with another on the hill behind the petrol station. Interestingly, there used to be a number of fire wardens employed for occasions
such as these who knew the surrounding forests like the back of their hand; this year, their positions were cut though funding issues. Now, fire-fighting teams are in the village asking for directions! On the west flank, the fire has spread many kilometres towards Chirche since this morning, and it seems to be well-established in Barranco de Erques. Local resident Mark Tubbs said: “The police are buzzing up and down the tracks on the top of the barrancos to try to establish whether it’s going to reach us.” In addition, the fire has now reached El Teide National Park, at Llano de Ucanca, and the public are urged not to attempt to travel up to the affected zone. And another Municipality is now affected as the flames lick across into La Orotava, from the southern side of the Island at the Llano de Ucanca. The road from El Portillo, inside the crater, into La
Orotava Valley, has now been closed, according to the Town Hall. 5pm: Vilaflor residents have seen their first sea-planes within the last few hours. Three Air Force planes and 110 members of the Army’s II Emergency Intervention Battalion left their base in Seville last night and have joined the Emergency Military Unit (UME) here in Tenerife. Spain’s Ministry of Defence said in a statement that the three “Canadair” planes from the Air Force 43rd Division were requested by the Canarian Government, and that these “fire-fighting” planes will be added to the air assets provided for by the Tenerife Cabildo, under the operational direction of the Emergency Military Unit (UME) chief. The 110 members of the II Emergency Intervention Battalion will be working beside the Adeje-based Army Tactical Group.
Opinions of the local Vilaflor residents AN hour ago, we’re just on the outskirts of Vilaflor. Can’t get any closer and are stopped at a road block. Vilaflor has now been evacuated, with the last few vehicles passing us at the roadblock. A local police officer, when asked for an update on the situation, said: “What can I say? It’s a disaster. Crews are working on the ground right at the edge of Vilaflor, doing all they can. “We are hoping that the wind direction doesn’t change, because right now the air is moving towards the coast. “That means the fire should burn itself out along the lower edge as it moves down from the pine forest. We can only hope.” With all air support suspended until daybreak, it is now down to the fire-fighters, working in dangerous,
Page 6
unbearably hot conditions, to try to hold back the blaze. At this moment, the flames have moved across from Guayero to the Montaña Mogino and over to Angola, the edge of Vilaflor. Crowds of local people are gathered at the Alma de Trevejos area on the road up to Vilaflor from La Escalona, and the feeling among them, for the most part, is sadness, mixed with anger. Local resident Manolo, in his 60s, told Canarian Weekly: “This is where I was born and raised. You see those hills aflame over there? I walked them every day to go to school.” Manolo and the crowd who soon gathered around him told us that they believe the major problem has been the lack of water available in the reservoirs in this area. “All the water is sent down to keep the golf courses green, so there is little here for use when something like this happens,” said an
angry resident. According to Manolo, it is a clear case of neglect in terms of fire prevention and readiness to respond, on the part of the Cabildo and local administrations. “This could have been stopped at Ifonche if there had been a response team available nearby with sufficient water supply,” said Manolo. “Then there’s the problem with the “pinoche”, the pine needles, which are at least half- a-metre thick at the base of the trees. We used to be allowed to go and bring it out for the farmers to use for bedding for livestock and such. “But now the public have been stopped from doing this for several years, and licences have been given to one or two companies to sell the needles. “Consequently, they accumulate at the base of the trees and act like a tinderbox. You can tell it’s the
pinoche that’s burning. See how the flames move from the bottom of the trees? “It really hurts to see what is happening to this beautiful place, especially when it could have been avoided.” As we spoke, a young woman came over, clearly angry and demanding to be heard. She said: “I live in La Escalona and I am sick of seeing politicians on the TV saying how grateful they are to all the military and workers who are fighting this fire. “First of all, it shouldn’t have happened and second, there is no need for gratitude. It is the politicians’ responsibility to see that the appropriate steps are taken to avoid this kind of thing; not wait for it to become a disaster and then call in the military and then be grateful. I am so angry.” Anger and sorrow in equal measure, tonight in Vilaflor, as the fire rages.
The new ground troops, along with the existing EMU, bring the total of military personnel to 240 members, with 42 vehicles, including 11 fire engines. They are attacking the fire up-close, and are also extinguishing secondary fires, as well as being responsible for the safety of the locally-affected populations. Airports’ authority AENA has confirmed that three planes are in use, collecting fresh water from Tenerife South and sea water from Los Cristianos. They can each carry 1,500 litres and are attacking the most important areas. In addition, said AENA: “There are further seaplanes on alert should they be needed.” 7.50pm: 1,800 people in Vilaflor have been evacuated as a precautionary measure as the fire advances from the west towards the village. The vast majority have been relocated with friends and family; 30 people have been transported to a centre in Granadilla. Efforts are still concentrated in preventing the progress of the fire in this area. 8pm: The evening Press Conference began without the presence of Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior. He (along with the Industry Minister) is visiting Ifonche (source of the fire). Javier González Ortíz, the Canary Islands’ Minister of Economy, Finance and Security, spoke first, reiterating that the evacuation of Vilaflor was a preventive measure. And the calmness with which the evacuation was carried out (with the Mayor of Vilaflor among those evacuated) was praised. In Vilaflor, two TITSA buses were despatched to transport evacuees out of the village. The operation was calm, controlled and successful. Unfortunately, the fire’s perimeter has extended on the North-West front but is NOT heading for populated areas. This is being monitored
by the military as well as firefighting crews. The perimeter on the East side has also advanced and this is where efforts have been intensified again, because of the proximity of Vilaflor. The western front is still active in higher areas. There is a danger of secondary fires but, with continued presence, the risk can be reduced to a minimum. On the North-West front, the fire is approaching a “barren” area, so it is hoped that the lack of vegetation will help efforts to extinguish the fire (as it did in La Orotava earlier). The second front on the edge of the Teide National Park has been “secured” at the time of the press conference, but the most problematic area is the front approaching Vilaflor. Because of this, teams have been clearing vegetation from the roadsides to the east of the fire line to provide a natural barrier against its progression. Winds from the South-West have not helped the situation, but it is hoped that another wind change will assist the teams. Complementary measures are in places in several areas, where people are on the lookout for flash fires. 11.45pm: The emergency services are concentrating their efforts on Vilaflor (east flank) where the fire is still advancing. Earlier, at 6pm, an underground fuel tank exploded, causing 1,800 residents to be evacuated as a precautionary measure. Air support has now ceased because they work on “visuals” as opposed to radar. They will recommence at first light. Tonight the temperature in Vilaflor is 35 degrees Celsius, less than last night, which is positive. The fire is still not under control and has now reached the street boundary of the village. The wind has changed direction; previously west to east, now it’s away from the pine trees. Eleven aircraft will be fighting the fire tomorrow.

W E D N E S D AY 8am: Ricardo M e l c h i o r continued with a response to reports that there are fewer people working against the fire now. He said the fire’s perimeter was causing concern in two places only and, as such, did not require as many personnel on the ground (the active perimeter is much smaller now). In Vilaflor, the line of defence created yesterday by clearing the road to the west of Vilaflor held up well. There was a breach of the barrier just north of the football ground, and there have been small fires in this area. The fire-fighting teams are taking measures to stop the fire extending upwards. Work will continue in the hope of stabilising this area. Efforts are concentrated on the south part of the Vilaflor front, and air support started at first light. The West Flank is basically stable above Taucho and Vera de Erques, although there are still some problematic areas in the
hard-to-reach barranco at Tágara, to the north-west of the perimeter. This area of the flank is heading towards barren and uninhabited land and is not as much of a priority as the Vilaflor flank. The fire’s perimeter has extended, but exact figures are not known. Pedro Martín, the Mayor of Guía de Isora, said over 100 people from Chirche were “invited” to relocate because of heavy smoke. The vast majority declined at the time as the smoke was drifting upwards. In the early hours of this morning, the wind drew the smoke lower, so some people have relocated from the Chirche area further into the town of Guía de Isora. Some 40 Vilaflor evacuees spent the night in the Pabellón Los Hinojeros, in Granadilla, where they were looked after by the Red Cross. Seven children and an adult were moved to a hotel. A Red Cross spokesperson said they’d had “as good a night as possible” and were at that time having

breakfast. 1pm: Cabildo President Ricardo says the flanks are under control in “the majority” of areas, except around Tágara. It is hoped that this area will be stabilised in the next few hours. Efforts are now being concentrated in the Guía de Isora flank, and, because of the more stable and positive outlook around Vilaflor, the air support has been dispatched to the west flank. Presence has been increased here, but it was stressed that the priority earlier had to be in the more densely-populated areas, like Vilaflor. Humberto Gutiérrez, a Civil Protection engineer and head of operations, said: “The perimeter has been contained, apart from one small area at the northernmost point at the edge of
west front), but the terrain here is the main obstacle to access by terrestrial means. “In the area of Chirche (Guía de Isora), they are fighting the fire so that it does not reach the vicinity of the village.” However, a local resident has within the past ten minutes told Canarian Weekly: “Things are getting worse. Helicopters are working flat-out, but the fire is spreading west to Chío and Santiago de Teide. I saw only saw two planes once this morning. To be honest, the helicopter operation seems futile. “The buckets are so small in comparison with the fire. It’s like trying soak up the sea with a bath sponge.” The Cabildo estimates that for at least two weeks, there will be “hot spots” in the area.
8pm: Two fronts are still active. Forces are continuing to work to combat the progress of the fire; the front at Tágara is the most troublesome. The north-west flank has breached the perimeter set earlier today and is progressing slowly northwest. The fire is not under control on this flank because of changeable winds. Humberto Gutiérrez says efforts have intensified during the afternoon. At the time of the press conference, the area around Taucho, Ifonche (and areas south of there) are stable. On the Left Flank, it was reported that there were not many flames, but the area is still burning through the open pine forest area. Residents of Taucho and La Quinta have been told that they may now return home.
Unpaid and unsung - we salute Tenerife’s fire-fighting heroes ON Tuesday evening, a Canarian Weekly reporter was privileged to spend time with Adeje’s voluntary fire-fighters (Bomberos Voluntarios), who are based in Fanabe. Throughout the Island, there are 14 fire stations in all, nine of which are serviced by unpaid, voluntary fire brigades. Adeje was established in 1985 and Commander-inChief Carlos Paulson (general manager of a hotel in normal times) has been at the station since its inception. He has 37 fire-fighters under his command, who have been working around the clock since the incident began.

the crater, through difficulty of access. In Ifonche, the UME (Emergency Military Unit) is remaining to keep the perimeter secure. The active front is ‘stable’. “The fire is advancing on the north-west side, but remains inside the perimeter and is advancing slowly because of comparatively favourable conditions. 2.15pm: The fire suppression efforts are focused in front of Guía de Isora (northwest), which is now the most critical point. Vilaflor was the priority earlier because of the proximity to the heart of the village, and they have succeeded in slowing its progression. Tenerife Cabildo said: “At present, the aircraft and ground troops are operating in the pine Tágara (north-
“We’re an urban crew and our trucks are too big to go on forest tracks,” he said. “We’ve been providing support with man and machines - the manpower to tackle the fire, and also water support. “That’s because the BRIFOR trucks carry only 3,000-5,000 litres of water and they need replenishing.” When asked about the contradictory information regarding the supply of water available, Carlos reassured me, saying: “The water situation is okay, the hydrants are full, and there are reservoirs. The sea planes take the water from the sea anyway.” Two of his crews were tackling the fire at Vilaflor when it was at its worst, and another crew remained at the station because they were still obliged to carry
out their day-to-day duties. While our reporter was with them, they were called to a house fire in Tijoco Alto. It had been evacuated, but had suffered damage from hot ash infiltrating the property through an open window. The fire station is manned by volunteers at times of a major incident, such as this, and many employers allow them additional time off to carry out their volunteer duties. They carry out their roles with passion, and many have slept little since the fire began. Carlos explained the nature of the fire, saying: “It spread rapidly because of the weather conditions: with the extreme heat, the trees are hot and so they ignite quicker.” He added: “The pine cones
act like a slow-burning grenade; they catch light and roll, causing the fire to ignite a further 30-40 metres away. “The terrain also hampers the firefighters because underfoot is not stable, especially when they’re carrying heavy equipment. And walking on stones is not easy, particularly in the dark with just with a torch to guide them.” On Tuesday, the scale of the fire was less than that of the great fire of 2007, which spread 10kms every 20 minutes because of the weather. Carlos concluded by saying: “We’re working hard, trying our best in extreme conditions, including weather and terrain. We have human hands and machines - but we can’t control Mother Nature!”

NEWS IN BRIEF Holidays? We’re staying here STAY-AT-HOME holidays are the order of the day in Tenerife this summer. And the main beneficiary will be the south of the Islands, according to numerous travel agencies throughout the Canaries. Demand is high for weekend getaway packages to popular resorts in the South and, with the double pay in June and many people already collecting their tax rebates, the trek has begun. Most favoured among residents in the capital are self-catering and camping holidays, rather than hotels - and all-inclusive resorts have seen an even greater drop in numbers.
Diver dies in Los Cristianos A 30-year-old man died on Wednesday afternoon following a heart attack while diving off the Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos. The alarm was raised at 1.32 pm while he was already receiving treatment from a lifeguard. Medical personnel from a life-support ambulance continued resuscitation, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tax-break bonus for Canaries BEATRIZ BARRERA, President of the Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC), is delighted with the extension of ZEC tax breaks until 2026. “It will encourage foreign investment, particularly from international business projects wishing to use the Canary Islands as a platform to other markets,” she said. “The goal is to generate more jobs and attract more foreign investment to boost economic growth here in the Canary Islands.”
Rich are fleeing abroad THE economic crisis has led to a rise in the number of Spaniards moving abroad, with half of the rich people “disappearing” off the Hacienda’s radar. In the Canary Islands, 6,063 people left the archipelago, of which 2,200 were Spanish and the remaining 3,858 were foreign according to the National Statistics Institute. José Féliz Sanz, Professor of Applied Economy of Complutense University, said: “Those who can are running away.”
Drive-drug motorists nailed NEW drug controls brought in for drivers have resulted in half the tests being positive, which means Trafico’s “Zero Tolerance” campaign is already paying off. Just over 100 drug tests were carried out by police in a week, and 90% who failed said they had consumed cocaine or cannabis. The tests were carried out on “suspicious” drivers.

The contest was perhaps one of the most grueling due to the location of Sapri, which meant a long journey, the final leg being by train in 40 degree plus heat. Following a two hour delay the action began at 8pm, ending at 3am the following morning! Chris achieved 4th place, one better than last year so was very please with his achievement. That’s the last contest for this year; he is taking a break to concentrate on preparing his training partner Lee Burton for the Canary Island Championship in October 2012. Coastal Law reforms Big Brother is watching offer some reprieve AN overhaul of Spain’s legislation covering coastal areas concluded that homeowners, many of them non-Spaniards, will be allowed to keep their beachfront properties for at least another 75 years. But the proposals have angered environmental groups, who fear further development of the country’s coastline as a result. Much of the previously unspoilt coastline was destroyed by overdevelopment but recent crackdowns by regional authorities, the national government and prosecutors have led to thousands of properties being threatened with demolition, including many properties here in Tenerife, such as the Hotel El Medano, which actually stands on stilts, several metres beyond the shoreline.
Page 10
Coastal regions represent just seven per cent of Spain’s territory and yet are home to 44 per cent of the population. In some communities, three-quarters of all land adjoining the coast has been developed, and much of the infrastructure is geared towards the 48 million tourists who visit Spain each year.
The 1988 Coast Law nationalised the entire Spanish coastline, and with it all properties that fell within its arbitrary boundaries. Owners of properties that fell foul of the legislation, were given a 30-year concession of use, which would have expired in 2018. The aim was to make the whole length of the coastline accessible to
the public and to defend the coast against erosion and excessive urbanisation. The law established two zones separated by a demarcation line known as a ‘deslinde’: the public domain, made up of the surf zone and the beach, in which there can be no private ownership. Inside this public domain everything belongs to the state and there are no ownership rights. The second zone, running inland to around half a kilometre, includes areas with restrictions on private ownership, with more stringent restrictions nearer the shoreline. The preamble to the 24page draft reform explains the need for a change to the current legislation, saying that the 1988 law, “has tolerated outcomes that are not acceptable in environmental terms,” adding that over the last 24 years “time has consolidated certain situations,” and that the law has “prompted mistrust and uncertainty.” “The aim of the reform is to avoid the risk of homeowners losing their property rights in the short term, and particularly bearing in mind the difficulties this could create for foreigners,” the text continues. But Greenpeace says that relaxing the law “will accelerate the loss of the land-sea public domain and open the door to new forms of land use on the coast, making the law useless.” Mario Rodríguez, head of the Spanish chapter of Greenpeace, has called for, “protests to demand that the achievements in defending the environment over the past two decades are not cast aside.” He is calling for environmental organisations and affected communities to take legal action. Greenpeace predicts that the legislation will see further building on parts of the coastline where uncontrolled construction, sometimes associated with corruption in town halls, has already drawn reprimands from the European Union. “The last decade has seen the same number of new buildings as in the whole of our previous history,” explains María José Caballero of Greenpeace. “For years, people have thought they can build wherever they want along the coasts. We need to change that mentality.”
THE government’s cutbacks in unemployment benefit payments have taken a ‘Big Brother’ turn, with the announcement that even a suspicion of fraud will be sufficient to suspend payments. Until now, a person suspected of defrauding the system would lose the right to claim only if and when fraud was definitively proven. In some cases the loss of benefits is temporary; but sometimes it’s permanent. Under the new regulations, these sanctions can be imposed whether
actual proof of wrongdoing is obtained or not. As part of its latest austerity drive the PP government also cut the payment of unemployment benefit from 60 to 50 per cent of the salary earned previously, after a person has been out of work for six months. The Labour Ministry justified the decision by saying that this would increase its armoury in the fight against fraud. But labour unions have decried the announcement as opening the door to, “Arbitrariness and the criminalisation of the unemployed worker.”
Caught in the act! THIRTEEN days after the quarterfinal match between Spain and France in the European football championship, the Spanish ambassador to Poland has been removed from office over some hilarious comments against the French that were caught on film. Francisco Fernández Fábregas, a seasoned diplomat with a long career in Europe and Africa, exclaimed “Vamos, a dar por saco a los franceses!” (“Let’s screw the French!”) and, “Vamos, champán francés!” (“Quick! Some French champagne!”) at the dinner held in his
official residence to watch Spain’s 2-0 win over its neighbour to the north. The moment was caught by a cameraman, and depicts a euphoric ambassador sporting a Spanish team shirt given to him by team captain Iker Casillas. He and his wife are seen celebrating with a group of Spanish entrepreneurs living in Warsaw. Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo dismissed him 13 days later, although nobody at the Ministry was available for comment. Fábregas, 67, had been ambassador to Poland since 2008.
Arrivals for June had big increase TENERIFE recorded some positive results for the month of June, with a total of 261,651 foreign passengers arriving on the Island, representing an increase of 7.6 per cent over the same month in 2011. According to figures provided by National Airports and Air Navigation (Aena), and analysed by the Research Department of Tourism Tenerife, Tenerife and La Palma were the only Islands to see positive results in June, regarding the arrival of international passengers, with Gran Canaria remaining stable (- 0.1%) and the rest of the archipelago seeing a decline. As for a breakdown of the figures, visitors from the United Kingdom were up by 9.5%, Germany by 7.6%, Netherlands up 19.6%, Belgium 11.1%, France 2%, Switzerland 30,9%, Austria
29.9%, Russia 51,9% and the Czech Republic up by11.9%. However, arrivals were reduced in other markets such as Ireland, down by 7.1%, Italy down 17.6%, Scandinavia 12.9% and Poland at 8.4%. Analysis of the data for the first half of the year shows that only Tenerife and La Palma had an increase in foreign passengers increased, at 1.6 per cent and 15.2 per cent respectively. The island recorded in the first six months of the year an increase of foreign passengers from markets such as Germany, at 4.7%, United Kingdom 0.7%, Nordic 6.3%, Switzerland 26.8%, Russia 31.3%and Poland up by 11.3%. On the other hand, passenger numbers to Tenerife saw reductions from France, by 7.3%, Italy down 24.2% and the Czech Republic 13.3%.

Men from the wooden houses who overcame mighty Nelson IN late July 1797, every corner of Santa Cruz starred in one of the most significant events in the history of Spain. The courage of the Tenerife people, and the wisdom of General Gutierrez, combined to defend what was then just a neighbourhood of wooden houses. The overwhelming power of Britain’s Admiral Nelson and his fleet of ships, manned by over 3,000 experienced men, were defeated by a small military contingent comprising local militias, civilians and just 300 soldiers, who formed the Infantry Battalion of the Canaries. This defeat is virtually the only blot on Nelson’s impeccable war record. The battle occurred on 25th July 1797, the feast of Santiago, who from that day became the co-patron of the city. Moreover, the success of the port town in this armed confrontation marked the final step for it to be named

capital of the province of the Canary Islands, in 1833. The caricature of Nelson with a shattered arm, the cannon Tigre, that fired the shot which did the damage, and the image of General Gutierrez, covers the history books in schools across Spain. But not in Tenerife. To overcome this ignorance, Tertulia, the Friends of July
25th, consisting of historians and researchers specialising in the history and culture of the Islands, was created in 1995 to invite the Canarian people to enter a time machine and discover the events which occurred in their not-too-distant past. To commemorate the 215th anniversary of the Battle of July 25th, 1797, members of
Tertulia, with the support of public and private authorities, have decided to focus the schedule of activities in San Andres this year. Despite not being active in the battle, the fishing village has a unique significance. A peasant, who came to sell his fruit to the troops in Santa Cruz, was the first to sound the alarm, upon sighting
Nelson’s fleet in the darkness of the early morning of 22nd July. The events planned this year will be held today (Friday), tomorrow and Tuesday (24th) in the coastal town. This evening at 8pm, Jesus Villanueva, who wrote the novel The Bronze Fire, will give a talk at the Society of St. Andres Sports Club
on developments relating to the Battle, which will be attended by British Consul Maria Leng. Tomorrow (Saturday), a 7pm Mass will be held in the parish church, sung by the group Paiba. La Tertulia, with the support of the Port Authority, will also lay a series of markers, consisting of stones from the old pier, with an explanatory plaque in places where there were castles, forts and batteries, which acted against Nelson and his troops. The first inauguration will be at the Castle of San Andres, on Tuesday at 8.30pm. Finally, that night, there will be an act of homage and remembrance to the fallen of the Battle, with special reference to Vicente Talavera, the last man to die in the fight. At the sea’s edge, the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General of the Canaries, will be speaking, and a military bugler will play the call to prayer. Then a wreath will be thrown out to sea.

YOUR Cost of living in the EMAILS Canaries is on the up Dear Editor, WHILE all we hear these days is bad news, fighting, crisis, young people stabbing each other, more crisis, youth unemployment, etc, here’s a story with GOOD news for a change. Back in April or June 2010, I lost a camera card in the Eccles/Manchester area in April while visiting my daughter, who’d just had her first child and I was back there in June for the Christening. As you can imagine, I was upset because of the photos on it. I reported it to the various organisations, including the police and the bus company. But I heard nothing and gave up the ghost. At the end of May this year, I received an email from a holiday rental company called Cumbrian Cottages. I nearly deleted it, thinking it was one of those annoying fliers because we had used them once in 2009. Luckily, I gave the email a second glance and, to my surprise, the card had been found. To clear up the confusion, a man called Gary had found the card in his grandmother’s cupboard - she had found it on a street in Eccles. Gary then started enquiries, showing a family photo outside a cottage dated 11.10.2009 on Facebook and received a reply saying that it was “Low Moor House”. Further enquiries found that it was rented for those dates by Cumbrian Cottages, and their records showed an email/telephone number in Spain. Eventually, Cumbrian Cottages contacted Gary via email, and Facebook was established. The card is now back with us after what Gary calls “An incredibly long and interesting journey”. We would like to thank everybody - Gary and his grandmother, and Cumbrian Cottages, for all the work that went in to finding the owner. A good deed indeed! Thank you. Ray and Monica Shaw, Tenerife
Pay increase for Blue-Chip bosses WITH over a quarter of Spain’s working population out of a job and struggling to make ends meet, the top management of companies in the blue-chip Ibex 35 index last year awarded themselves a healthy pay hike, despite an overall drop in corporate earnings, while public sector workers suffered wage cuts. According to the annual report on corporate governance released midJuly by the National Securities Commission (CNMV), the average remuneration of the directors on the boards of the biggest 35 listed companies in Spain was up 4.4 per cent at 522,000 euros from a year earlier. In the case of chairmen and chief executive officers, average wages climbed to 2.4
Page 12
million euros from 2.2 million a year earlier. The average remuneration per board was up 5 per cent at 7.5 million euros. The CNMV attributed the hikes to an increase in the results-based component of the wage structure of two companies, which the supervisor did not name. The combined earnings of companies in the Ibex 35 last year were down 34 per cent at 33.696 billion euros, as the economic crisis undermined their performance. The CNMV noted that the total salaries paid out to Ibex 35 top management represented about 2.6 per cent of their combined earnings, a ratio similar to that in 2010. The number of top managers in Ibex 35 firms dropped by 35 to 482 last year.
THE Canary Islands residents will have to tighten their belts even more, as it looks like making ends meet from now on will cost on average 100 euros more for a family of four, every month. After the tax increase that took effect on July 1st, the shopping bill is approximately 32 euros more expensive, because the tax which applies to staples has risen from 2% to 3%. Add to this the increase in gasoline (7%), electric bills (3.95%), the phone (7%), tobacco (0.5%), butane (6%), alcoholic beverages (0.5%), low alcohol beer (2%) and clothing (1%). So, to feed a couple with two children each month costs about 325 euros, then add other expenses, such as hygiene products, tobacco or drink. Added together, families will find, by late July, that the shopping cart has gone up by about 35 euros. Then add to that the cost of keeping a car on the road, at an average of five euros more every time you fill up. Given that the average household
has two vehicles and uses roughly two tanks a week, the fuel bill will be 40 euros more expensive per month. And as if this were not enough, the burden of balancing the books at home is increased by the fact
that the phone, which until now had no tax levy in the archipelago, now charges 7% tax. Taxes paid on butane also rise by 6%, so a bottle, which until now cost just under 16 euros, is up to 16.45 euros. Another euro per month, if a
family consumes at least two bottles. As icing on the cake, the electricity bill is not immune to the rise. The bill for a household of four is 100 euros, which will be almost four euros higher.
Yeremi Vargas case still active YEREMI Vargas’s family held a gathering at the doors of his home on his birthday, Wednesday, July 18th, the day Yeremi would have been 13 years old. The then seven-year old boy went missing from close to his house in Vecindario on Gran Canaria. His mother, Ythaisa Suarez, wanted to mark the day and remind everyone that it is just over five years since her son disappeared. Ythaisa spoke to Europa Press and said that every year without Yeremi on his birthday is torture and she has to spend the day away from her home. She said she still has faith that her boy will be found alive and well She then appealed once more to the public to not give up on Yeremi and to be in contact with the Guardia
Civil with any information on possible sightings of the young teen. Back in March of this year, some new information on
a car and a child’s clothing reactivated the search for the boy, and Guardia Civil sources have confirmed that this new data contributes to keeping
the case alive. Yeremi’s parents have always believed their son was kidnapped, and since the search of the local area found nothing, their hypothesis has become even stronger. ‘Someone took him and he is still alive’, they say. The Guardia Civil held a press conference in March where they showed a seven minute long video with previously unseen images of the missing child. They confirmed the investigation is being reactivated after information regarding three cars, a white Opel Corsa B type, another C type Corsa and a black Renault Clio, were seen in the area at the time of Yeremi’s disappearance. The Opel was said to be driven by a man wearing a cap and witnesses say later there were two people inside, and not just the driver as before. Co-op cashes in on the Disney find Lloyds big branch sale a new Nemo LLOYDS Banking Group is selling more than 600 bank branches to the Co-op Group in a deal considered “almost revolutionary”. When it has been completed by November next year - including the TSB and Cheltenham & Gloucester brand - the Co-op will have claimed 7% of the UK’s retail “current account” banking market. Co-op Group chief Peter
Marks told Sky’s Eamonn Holmes yesterday (Thursday): “Why are we different? Because we are owned by our customers and we are known for our trust and ethics. “We’re not just about shortterm profit and share price - we are about the long-term and sustainability, and that is why we are different.” He added: “This is almost revolutionary for the banking industry, and the banking
industry really needs this at the moment.” The transaction includes a protracted sale process, aimed at streamlining the business to satisfy regulators, and boosting competition in high-street banking. Lloyds, which is 40% owned by the British taxpayer, said the Co-op would pay an initial £350m for the branches, along with £400m in additional payments. The deal is still awaiting final
Tenerife’s underground economy THE so-called underground economy here in Tenerife in the industrial sector has grown between 30 and 32 per cent since the outbreak of the crisis, according to head of Legal Aid, (DAL), for the Tenerife Federation of Metal and New Technologies Employers (Femete), Ildefonso Machado. “The number of companies operating illegally has increased quite significantly in the automotive sector and in metalwork, such as aluminium doors and windows. “Many of our

members from different parts of the island are suffering because there are so many workshops that are moving large amounts of totally illegal cars. Also, this is a situation that can be extrapolated to other sectors, such as low voltage, electrical installations or plumbing,” Machado explained. The data collected by DAL is already in the hands of the Canary Islands Finance Minister, Javier Gonzalez Ortiz, who met with Machado recently. The Minister was made aware of not only
the difficulties faced by Femete, but the speed with which illegal business have emerged in recent times, according to Machado. “We were not asking for money, we just want to offer the experience of many years of our work, visiting and advising entrepreneurs. We want to work with the resources we currently have, channelling and managing complaints that come to us. From my point of view it is a mistake not to use the experience of organisations like Femete,” he added.
approval from the Financial Services Authority and the Treasury The deal will bring 4.8 million new customers to the Co-op’s ever-growing banking brand, including 3.1 million current account holders. And, combined with its existing branch network, the Co-op will end up with around 1,000 branches across the UK. Lloyds chief Antonio HortaOsorio said:“We believe the Cooperative will be a good owner for our business, customers and colleagues, and the combined banking business will be a significant competitor on the high street.” It is regarded as the biggest new entry shake-up of highstreet banking for decades. In a further change to the face of Britain’s retail banking, Marks & Spencer has opened its first bank branch to enable customers to access it as late as 11pm, as well as on Sundays. Its flagship Marble Arch store in central London is the first of 50 planned to open over the next two years. The opening hours will mirror those of the stores in which they are situated, which means total banking every day.
FINDING NEMO, the computer-animated undersea adventure film which became a smash hit, grossed £557m worldwide after its 2003 release. Now, there is to be a sequel, expected to be directed again by Andrew Stanton, despite his disastrous fantasy film John Carter. That proved to be one of the biggest box-office flops of all time, Disney losing £128m earlier this year. But it did not dent the reputation of Stanton, who won two Oscars for his animation work on Wall-E and the original Finding Nemo. He also played a big role in many hits from computer
animation company Pixar, going back to Toy Story and including 1999’s A Bug’s Life, which he co-directed. Finding Nemo was Pixar’s second-highest-grossing film and the third-biggest animated release by Disney, after Toy Story 3. Although Stanton is said to have been confirmed officially as director of the latest Nemo, Disney and Pixar officials are keeping it to themselves. The new story about the little clownfish has been scheduled for release in 2016, while the original underwater classic will be re-released in 3D in September. The Pixar classic, which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Picture, starred Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks and Willem Dafoe as the voices of Nemo, Marlin and company.

Hundreds of penguins die after being washed up on a coastline NEARLY 500 penguins, washed up along the Southern Brazil coastline in the last month, were said to have died of natural causes.
Be safe in the sun THE University Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria (HUNSC) in Santa Cruz, has reported an increase in the incidence of cases of skin cancer, (melanoma,) in the Canary Islands over the past decade. The coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Melanoma centre at HUNSC, Ricardo Fernandez de Misa, explained that the centre has gone from treating 20 patients in 2002 to 59 in 2011. The doctor said, “I do not mean to demonise the sun, but the abuse and prolonged exposure at a young age can cause people with seconddegree burns to double their risk of melanoma in their adult life.” With their new campaign underway, the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) aims to raise awareness that teens who sunbath without protection, especially at the high risk times between noon and 4pm, could cause irreversible damage to the skin, which could eventually lead to skin cancer, because the negative effects are cumulative.
Page 14
In addition, Ricardo Fernandez criticised the use of tanning booths. The doctor said that fashion is cyclical when it comes to getting a tan, and that 100 years ago white skin was a sign of beauty. As far as protection when on the beach, the AECC recommends finding some shade during peak hours, and use a sun screen of at least factor 30. Parents should take special care with children and adolescents because youngster’s skin is more sensitive to the harmful effects of the sun. Ultraviolet radiation acting on the skin makes an individual more susceptible to problems later in life. The earlier the skin is exposed in an inappropriate manner, the chances of developing skin cancer in adulthood increase. The AECC has spent 59 years battling cancer. It is a non-profit organisation that integrates patients, families, volunteers and professionals in working to prevent cancer and encourage the implementation of research projects that improve treatment and diagnosis. Every summer they start a new campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of overexposure to the sun.
Researchers at the Brazilian Centre for Coastal Studies, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, reached that conclusion after analysing the conditions in which the animals were found. Most of the birds were young, and displayed no signs of external injury or oil in their plumes. Biologist Mauricio Tavares, from the centre, said: “Birds in the first year of life are inexperienced, and the pattern of dead birds is common for this time of year.” Two years ago, more than
550 penguins were found on Sao Paulo state’s Atlantic coast, but they appeared to have died of starvation. The Peruvian government
launched an official inquiry this year when nearly 3,000 dolphins and more than 500 pelicans were discovered along the country’s northern
Pacific coast. According to Tavares, July is historically the month when more birds arrive at his centre for rehabilitation after washing up on the beaches weakened, injured or covered in oil. “The animals usually migrate from Argentina around this time of year in search of food and warmer weather,” he said. “Some do wash up each year, but over 500 is an extremely high number.” Penguins have also shown up along the famous Rio de Janeiro, where some 40 have been rescued this month. The birds delight beachgoers, but scientists believe their health suffers in the tropical waters, and an environment agency flies them back to the south whenever possible.
Olympics security fiasco was ‘predictable’, say MP's WITH just seven days to go before the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony in London next Friday (27th July), the farcical security arrangements have been reduced to “predictable chaos”. The message comes from MPs as the coalition Government decides whether to deploy an extra 2,000 troops to prop up organisers Locog, and security contractors G4S. Another 3,500 soldiers were drafted in this week after the beleaguered G4 firm admitted it would not be able to provide the promised 10,400 guards, taking the full deployment to 17,000. A further 2,000 soldiers are, allegedly, being held in reserve as a contingency in
case of further issues. But the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has been accused in a report by MPs of lacking transparency and not knowing how much security the Games need. Margaret Hodge, Public Accounts Committee chairwoman, said: “The chaos which has emerged over the security contract was predictable and undermines confidence in those responsible for managing the Games. “There is now a last-minute scramble to make sure there will be enough security personnel on the ground.” She added: “In evidence to us before Christmas, all those concerned gave assurances that the contract could be
met, despite them more than doubling the number of guards before the ink was dry on the original contract. “No credible explanation has been given for an astonishing 12-fold hike in management costs, from £10m to £125m, and G4S has still not been able to deliver. “Now troops are having to be drafted in, and the Home Office needs to get a grip on Locog and G4S urgently. “We still don’t know just how many security guards will actually be delivered, or whether G4S will face any penalty.” Extra soldiers would create a new Olympic headache because there are concerns already about where they would be housed, and the state of their living conditions.
But Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, disputes the report, saying: “With just over a week to go, we are on track to deliver a great Games, on time and under-budget. “At the end of May, there was £476m of contingency unallocated, and I am confident we will deliver the project for under £9bn. “We disagree with the Committee’s assertion that the DCMS has lacked transparency. London 2012 has, arguably, been more transparent than any other public-sector project.” A Home Office spokesperson insisted no extra troops were set to be deployed, while the DCMS stressed that the cost of G4S’ failure would not cost taxpayers.

Rausing is bailed over wife’s death FR AIL-LOOKING m u l t i - m i l l i o n a i re Hans Rausing appeared in court on Wednesday, charged with preventing the lawful and decent burial of his wife, Eva. The 48-year-old’s body was found underneath several layers of clothing and bin bags at their luxury home. Mr Rausing was granted conditional bail at West London Magistrates’ Court, to appear again at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday (26th July). Police discovered the body of Mrs Rausing, a mother-offour, in an advanced state of decomposition after arresting her husband - heir to the Tetra Pak millions - on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs last Monday. Mrs Rausing, one of Britain’s richest women, was found beside a bed in an annexe on the second floor of their luxurious home in Cadogan Place in London’s Chelsea, which she shared with her 49-year-old husband. Mr Rausing, whose family

made a fortune when they sold the Tetra Pak cardboard drinks carton business in the 1990s, was told by District Judge James Henderson: “I grant you bail on two conditions. “The first is that you must reside at the Capio Nightingale Hospital, and that you live there and sleep there overnight, and you do not leave that hospital unless you are accompanied by a member of hospital staff.”
Hans’ father, also Hans, is worth an estimated £6.4bn, thanks to the family’s connection to Swedish packaging giant Tetra Laval. The death of Eva remains unexplained, pending further tests, , but the heiress’s previous problems with drugs have been well-documented. Her father, Tom Kemeny, has paid tribute to his “beloved daughter”, describing her as an “American philanthropist, loving wife and mother, who
helped countless addicts, and children”. He also expressed the family’s love and support for her husband, who was arrested on suspicion of murder after her body was found. A Kemeny family statement released with his tribute said: “We believe her tragic death highlights the scourge of drugs - and that it does not matter how rich, intelligent or beautiful you are, you can still
be impacted and overcome by this terrible disease.” The family statement also appeals for donations in Eva Rausing’s name to a drug awareness and treatment fund, or to the UK charity Action on Addiction, which she supported. Nick Barton, chief executive of Action on Addiction, added in the statement: “Eva worked tirelessly for years, without any desire for public recognition, and despite
her own health issues, to help people and charities in the addiction field through her wonderfully-generous support. “Eva and Hans were a devoted and loving couple for the 21 years they spent together. They benefited thousands of lives through their personal involvement and philanthropic activities. They bravely battled their demons and supported each other.”
Unused £32m naval ship on scrapheap A £32 MILLION, seagoing stealth bomber was kept under wraps for 30 years then sold as scrap by the US Navy. While far from being the most expensive ship ever built, the IX-529 Sea Shadow was a secret military project, built by Lockheed Martin and sold to the American Government for that mammoth amount. This 164ft-long vessel, inspired by the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter, was an engineering marvel,
able to evade radar and withstand the worst storms nature could throw at it. Yet the extraordinarily-expensive existence of the Sea Shadow,
revealed to the public in 1993, was never employed gainfully. And because the US Navy had no use for it, and no museum was interested in
taking it, military officials had little choice but to sell the boat at auction. The only consolation was that the ship sold for more than the
opening bid of just £64,000. A Californian ship company bought it from the military for over £1.6m, with the proviso that it scrapped it!

MARIANO E ZUNINO SIRI Understanding the Law
Email: marianozunino@canarianweekly.com
Problems facing home defaulters I HAVE received numerous emails since my last column, and this one caught my eye especially. That’s because the situation has been happening all over the Island thanks to the perilous financial predicament many of you are experiencing. Dear Mariano, I bought a property in 2007, with a mortgage, in Fuerteventura. It is not my family home. I have had difficulties paying the instalments on time, and that is why I decided to sell and cancel the mortgage. I was up to date, but I now owe the last repayment. The bank manager will not accept taking the payment when the property is sold, and he is enforcing me to sell the property at a very
Page 16
low price. Although I want to sell, there is no buyer, so can I just stop paying and let the bank repossess? N In one of my previous articles, I mentioned that if you stop paying your mortgage and the bank repossess, you could be still owing monies on top of the property’s value, placed by adjudicators. In other words, if their value does not cover the total debt, you could be still liable for the equity. In a previous column, I referred to the “Datio in Solutum”, which is the name in Spanish regarding “Dación en Pago” (lieu of payment). That means cancellation of the debt by other means than what was originally agreed. The debtor provides a service to the creditor, substituting the original debt. For example, the debtor owes money to
the creditor and instead of refunding such monies, the debtor pays (or cancels the debt) and hands over a property. The original obligation is changed to another one, which is cancelled. It is not the usual way to pay off a mortgage loan. This way the debtor (mortgagee), who cannot pay future instalments, cancels the mortgage (totally or partially) to the bank (mortgagor), and hands over the property (instead of the monies). This way, the risk of nonpayment is transferred to the creditor. The Mortgage
Law states the possibility of agreeing in the Mortgage Deed that the debt is to be fully covered by the mortgage loan (the responsibility is limited to the assets and there would be no personal responsibility). This agreement has to be stated when the Mortgage Deed is authorised. The Civil Code does not mention the “Dación en Pago” itself, but this possibility is recognised. The problem of the “Dación en Pago” (cancellation) is that it involves a double taxation. The tax is paid when the bank gets the property and when the bank sells it.
I will try to summarise the Royal Law Decree 6/2012, which has different measures to protect mortgage debtors without the means to pay. There are different ways to help those with difficulties, in order to restructuring the mortgage debt (Ethic Practices Code). There are three phases: the first one, applying a “carencia” in the amortisation of capital (this means payment of reduced interest only, which makes the monthly instalment cheaper) over four years. The second phase would be to reduce the debt if proposed by the bank (the name is “quita”). The third step would be the “dación en pago”, that should be accepted by the bank. In the latter case the families could stay in the property for a two-year period, paying a “satisfactory” monthly rent. Tax modifications The Deed of Renewal of
Mortgage Credits will be exempt from Transfer Tax and Stamp Duty. The one enforced to pay the “Municipal Plusvale Tax” would be the bank (who will not be allowed to pass this obligation to the debtor). The notary and registry fees would be reduced up to 50%. Repossession In case of foreclosing, there would be an auction in which the property is adjudicated to the best bid of at least 70% of the value. The debtor will have extra 10 days after the auction to introduce a bidder to improve the said value. If there’s no bidder, the creditor could ask for adjudication of the property in at least 60% of the value. Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer registered in Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Accion del Sol News
Accion travellers call in to see their old pals at home THESE dogs were once delivered to Accion del Sol as puppies, abandoned on the streets by callous owners.
Now they are older and living in different countries. But they had a rendezvous at the refuge last week and were happy to see each other again after four years. It’s always nice to have previously-adopted dogs back as visitors with their new owners, and very heartening for Marion and her staff. Today (Friday), Accion staff will be enjoying a walk around the centre of Santa Cruz with some of the refuge dogs, as well as owners with their own dogs, hoping to raise animal welfare awareness. If you would like to join the walk, then please meet at The Plaza by the lake at 4pm, or call 922 772 252 this morning for more information. Following the success
Page 18
of last year’s Educational programme, in which refuge staff, accompanied by a few inmates, visited various schools. They were teaching children about the merits of animal welfare, and raising awareness of the crisis surrounding Tenerife’s animal population. This will be repeated on a much larger scale, once the schools resume following the summer holidays. Accion is firmly committed to this programme, to try to give the children a better understanding about animal welfare, which, in turn, will enhance the lives of many animals on the Island. Please call 922 778 630 if you want to learn more about the programme, or if you would like to help out in any way. Towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs if you have any to spare. The refuge is situated at Poligono De Industrial Estate, Granadilla, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER, the Parque Eolica, where the windmills are, and is open to the public Monday-Friday, from 3-6pm. If you are interested in adopting a dog or maybe just taking a dog or two for a leisurely walk, then do drop in, or contact the above number.
Live Arico are closed down LIVE ARICO, the long-standing dog refuge based at Atogo, next door to the Ostrich Farm, has been forced to close by Granadilla Council. A special meeting was convened on Monday, when the decision was taken after councillors decided the centre was being run in “unwholesome conditions”. It also lacked the relevant licence to operate and Mayor Jaime González Cejas said: “It has become a dog shelter of worrying proportions, cramming in some 400 dogs.” His deputy, Esteban González, added that the site was a health risk for humans and animals, which is why the Town Hall had no option but to close it down. Officials plan to transfer the animals to a site in Fasnia - sandwiched between the Granadilla and Arico municipalities in the south-east - which has been adapted by the Cabildo and capable of housing the huge number of dogs. It had been known for some weeks that the axe was about to fall, but Sue Havenhand, who is head of Live Arico, believes that “people are out to destroy us”. She told Canarian Weekly on Wednesday: “ The council are closing us. It’s not so clear-cut because the Cabildo offered us land in January. “But now we have kind of been gazumped by the people out to destroy us, who have got themselves a wealthy benefactor to fund the building work, with certain conditions
that I am not in agreement with. “But we are meeting with the lawyer and will release a statement next Monday, as we should be a lot clearer by then. In the meantime, expect to hear anything!” Live Arico officials have raised thousands of euros over the years, through numerous charity ventures, including entertainment nights in various bars in the South. And for now, at least, it’s business as usual for the organisers, who have issued their regular press bulletin. Our thanks to … All involved in the recent fund-raiser at Restaurant Maria, on Golf del Sur, which yielded 590 euros to help pay our water bill. As always, Sol and the staff worked so hard to produce a fantastic buffet. Top-class entertainment was provided by Nick Page, Spencer Robson,
Tanya Tevaro, Kelvin, and juniors Alfie B & Coco Roja Page. We will be staging a benefit night at Legends Bar, Costa Mar, Los Cristianos, next Wednesday (25 th July). The following Saturday (28 th), , we are back on the Top Square, Golf del Sur, for another refuge fund-raiser. The owners and staff are planning something big, so watch this space. The Gillian Banks Theatre School make a welcome return from the UK in the first week of August, with venues and dates to be confirmed. After last October’s epic events, which raised over 3,000 euros, we hope to repeat the success and give audiences another night to remember. Our best-bargain shops We have some fantastic bargains in our three shops. We are in Los
Cristianos, Churchill Square, opposite the play park by the harbour, and open from 10am to 4pm daily, including Sundays. Our San Eugenio shop, opposite Hotel La Niña, by Amandas Bar, opens Monday to Saturday, from 10am-4pm. And our original shop in Costa del Silencio opens Monday to Saturday, 11am-5pm. Refuge opening hours Monday-Friday: 1-5pm; Saturdays: 11am-1pm; other times by prior arrangement with Eugene on 648 918 943. THE SKY Soccer Saturday Charity golf day and football evening had Marie Curie Cancer Care officials beaming with delight for the second year running. This May, all those who supported the golf and fun night, featuring Chris Kamara and his fellow SKY football pundits, raised an impressive £18,000. Entertainment in Tenerife Email: john.ashford@canarianweekly.com
A little less conversation ELVIS came to prominence as an early participant in London’s pub rock scene in the mid1970s, and later became associated with the punk/New Wave genre. In 2003, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He has won multiple awards in his career, including a Grammy, and has twice been nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male. The rest, as they say, is history and, because of the linear motion of time, everything before Costello is also history. Dutch courage WILLY RAY is a 29-year-old Soul and Motown singer, originally from Eindhoven, Holland. When he was just four, the family moved to Curaçao, where he immediately joined the local church choir. And by the age of 16, Willy had risen to lead singer in some of the best bands on the Island. He represented his adopted country in The World Championships of Performing Arts in 2000, walking away with both Gold and Silver medals for his performances. Five years later he found himself in Tenerife and, in his own words, began to live the beautiful but hard-working life of an entertainer. Hardworking? Many audiences would agree that Willy makes everything sound effortless. Tenerife Trials COMPÈRE Xombie has been working Sunday afternoons for 14 years, and this is his story. “I woke today at 11.55am. Wow! Getting up, I noticed the bed was a mess, so I was glad I hadn’t slept in it. I needed to get ready, but my favourite Chinos were still wet, so I took them off. “When you’re a famous compère, finding the right clothes can be a problem; thankfully, most of mine are stuffed behind the settee. Arriving at work, I elbowed away a drunk with a credit card trying to get money out of the mini-disc player, and switched on the system. “For a minute I thought my radio-mike wasn’t working,

but then I realised I was speaking into a dead lizard. The crowd of two went wild, because the beer pump handle had snapped off again and the barman was using it to calm the situation with a few well-placed headshots. “I helped by singing drinkrelated alternatives such as Red, Red Wine, The Piña Colada Song and When I’m Carling You. It worked, and the atmosphere quietened down to its cosy state of latent hostility. “After that, some acts came in and sang a bit. Hey, the time! I’m off home for Scrapheap Challenge; not the programme, but what I call my apartment.” Compère Xombie upholds a noble cause: the struggle to deliver entertainment at an ungodly hour, every weekend. He will continue the fight, if only to spite the audience. Always on my iPod STUART BEAGLEY first discovered his liking for the music of Michael Bublé while karaoke compèring. Like most accommodating entertainers, he sang what people wanted
to hear, and the popular British Columbian proved by far the most requested artist. Quickly finding that he had a handful of the man’s songs under his belt, Stuart realised that a few more would constitute a show. He was soon spending countless hours watching Bublé DVDs, refining the gestures. “It’s strange that what started out as just an idea turned into something of an obsession for me,” said Stuart. “Even now I have only four non-Bublé songs on my iPod!” Whether he’s belting out new tracks for a young crowd, popular covers for the more mature audience or the vintage contemporary jazz/big band numbers for recycled teenagers, Stuart has the ideal Bublé song for every occasion. For instance, Cry Me A River would be perfect for loss of bladder control. Contact numbers Willy Ray 673 763 897 Stuart Beagley 672 111 345 Please email me on johnashfordshowtime@ hotmail.com

Richard Bacon and Olympic hurdling medallist Colin Jackson count down the top 50 sublime, ridiculous and agonising moments from the modern Olympic Games. They range from heartwarming stories like Kelly Holmes winning two gold medals at the age of 34 and Steve Redgrave's five gold medal haul from successive games, to the inconsolable Derek Redmond being carried across the finish line by his father. There is even room for Eric 'The Eel' Moussambani, who swam the slowest heat in Olympic history, plus a visit to a group of ex-Olympians all living happily together in a retirement home. These moments are replayed with reflections from some of Britain's greatest ever Olympians, intercut with witty ponderings from comedians.

Gok Cooks Chinese Channel 4, 12:40 Gok Wan goes back to basics creating delicious dishes usually served as street food in China, starting with lamb and cucumber kebabs and the ultimate one-pot wonder: tender beef noodle soup. For his third dish, Gok heads to Brixton to meet Auntie Li, a dumpling demon bringing Beijing street food to south London.
Phil Spencer: Secret Agent Channel 4, 20:00 Phil Spencer returns, continuing his efforts to give Britain's troublesome property market a shake up. This time he goes undercover in Scotland, trying to get offers on two houses not far from Glasgow's busy city centre. In Giffnock he's working with Dougie, whose three-bed home has Scotland's best state school on the doorstep. And in Uddingston, he meets Pamela and Ian, whose fivebed cottage is struggling to find a buyer. One house is a 50s throwback, the other an 80s revival, and neither is what the buyers of Glasgow's swanky suburbs want in a family home. Phil and the owners feel the pressure with just one week to sell these pricey properties at an open day.
The Bachelor Channel 5, 22:00 Reality series featuring Spencer Matthews. On the exclusive Cote D'Azur, the eleven remaining girls are all falling for Spencer. The first date forces the girls out of their comfort zone and really puts their nerve to the test. Spencer has organised a 'comedy roast' for that evening.

TV’s Biggest Blockbusters ITV1, 20:35 As 2012 sees Britain complete the digital switchover, this two-hour special for ITV1 counts down the biggest rating television shows ever to hit our screens. These days, shows and events such as The X Factor final, England football matches and royal weddings still manage to pull in huge audiences as the nation gets together to watch talked-about TV. But back in the days of a mere four channels to choose from, even the most unexpected shows could attract staggering viewing figures. Split into four categories, Entertainment; Live Events; Drama and Soaps; and Comedy, TV’s Biggest Blockbusters counts down the top ten shows with the biggest audiences in each section. This exclusive programme, based purely on viewing figures, features ratings hits such as Jim’ll Fix It, The Royal Variety Performance, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding, Coronation Street, EastEnders and Bread, and also reveals more unusual ratings blockbusters. Who knew an episode of Neighbours where nothing much happens could have attracted an audience of over 21 million during a stormy night in Britain in February 1990? Or that the highest ever rating episode of game show Double Your Money, with an audience of 19.4 million, was filmed in Soviet Russia? Host Hughie Green wasn’t even allowed to hand out cash in the communist state, so had to change the prizes to commodities instead with a TV being worth more than the average annual wage. Who can forget the cubs eating their dinner on a rollercoaster on Jim’ll Fix It? Or Torvill and Dean skating at the final of the 1994 Winter Olympics?

Matt is in Much Wenlock to learn more about William Penny Brookes, a far-sighted Victorian who thought more people should get out and about to get fit. It was an idea that was to give rise to the biggest show on Earth - the Olympics. A century or more later, Matt meets a local girl aiming for gold in archery at the Olympics in 2020. Julia learns you do not have to be an athlete to get something out of this landscape; children's author Malcolm Saville also saw the merit in exploring rural Shropshire. His books encouraged children to seek adventure in its wild places.

These moments are replayed with reflections from some of Britain's greatest ever Olympians, intercut with witty ponderings from comedians.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Channel 4, 17:45 This family adventure from Chris Columbus is adapted from the first of Rick Riordan's series of fantasy novels, and stars Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson, an American teen who finds that Greek myth is much closer to home than he imagined. It turns out that while his mum Sally is human, his father is Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea and earthquakes; which makes our hero a demigod. At first it's all a bit much to take in, as he learns the modern world is teeming with deities and their offspring. And things take a turn for the worse when Zeus suspects Percy of theft, after the lightning bolt that confers supreme terrifying power goes missing. With his mother kidnapped and the errant super weapon threatening to cause a catastrophic clash of the titans among the gods, Percy sets off to recover the artefact.

Tom Daley is Britain’s Olympic poster boy. He’s dreamt of competing in the London 2012 Olympics for most of his young life but the final year of preparations have been his most challenging. Tom’s father Rob, his constant companion in competitions around the world, has fought and lost a battle with cancer. His ever-growing commercial commitments have been questioned by his own sporting authorities. The growing dominance of a seemingly impenetrable Chinese opponent has seen him lose his World Champion crown. And on top of a strict training routine, Tom has the everyday teenage issues of passing his A Levels and his driving test. But Tom is fighting back. Against the backdrop of a series of incredible challenges he is fighting to keep his dream of Olympic glory alive. Award-winning film-maker Jane Treays has followed Tom for the past two years to observe this intimate story of Tom Daley and his family. W C CHOICE Ab Fab BBC 1, 22.35
As unmissable as the Olympic 100m final, but longer and funnier, Absolutely Fabulous returns tonight with Olympics - the last of three specials made to celebrate its 20 year anniversary. Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders, Bafta ‘female comedy performance’ for Ab Fab) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) are well known for having their fingers on the pulse of the nation. As the sound of the approaching Olympiad reaches deafening proportions Eddy is surprised that it is all about to start. She has rented out her house to a Hollywood A lister, but she is still living in it, as is her daughter (Julia Sawalha), her mother (June Whitfield) and her assistant Bubble (Jane Horrocks). Patsy tries to get into Eddy’s body suit to look suitably great for the A listers, with disastrous results. Health professionals are summoned. Eddy feels that doors are closing on her, age is catching up with her, invitations are not coming her way anymore and Stella McCartney’s shop is closed to her. To add to her depression, Bo and Marshall (her exhusband, played by Chris Ryan and his American girlfriend played by Mo Gaffney) arrive to stay for the Games. Things can only get worse. After their triumphant reunion at Christmas on BBC One, Eddy and Patsy return. Somehow, before the flame has been lit, they will end up running for glory inside the Olympic stadium and crash a reception for the likes of Tanni Grey Thompson, Dame Kelly Holmes, and Stella McCartney.

In this final episode of the series, Albert Road is transformed once again for family life in the 1970s. Single mum Lisa Rhodes moves in with her two sons, joining the other parents for whom the seventies are all about nostalgia. But as daily life is turned upside down by strikes, the three-day week, power cuts, water shortages and women's liberation, the rose-tinted glasses are off and the parents realise just how tough their own parents had it. With all the mums working, the two dads on Albert Road soon take up the strain at home: Michael Taylor puts on a pinny and cooks chicken kiev, while Phil knuckles down to the housework. As the families living on the street pull together as a community for the penultimate decade, when do they feel the golden era for the family really was?

Ten days left to try to tie up loose ends before the Deliverance Team finally hands over to the Live Team. Issues include what to do when it's discovered that the fireworks planned for the Opening Ceremony will trigger all the ground to air missiles that are in place for the Games; how to respond when the environmentally sound charging stations installed for the official Olympic electric cars turn out to charge so slowly that the entire fleet will quickly become plugged in, unable to move; and how to handle a much publicised competition to compose a special peal of church bells to ring in the dawn of the Opening Day but which so far has attracted only two entries.
Jon Richardson: A Little Bit OCD Channel 4, 22:00 For the past decade, comedian Jon Richardson's life has been driven by a quest for perfection. It has dictated everything from his eating habits and his relationship with his mother, to his ability to go on dates or entertain the idea of living with his friends. His obsessive nature and need to control the world around him was minutely detailed in his book, It's Not Me, It's You. Now he delves into the world of Obsessive Compulsive Disorders. Jon is not alone. After writing an article about his exacting nature affecting his ability to find a suitable girlfriend last year, he was inundated with letters from readers who identified with his compulsive need for immaculate cleanliness, precision and organisation. But Jon admits he knows very little about the condition.

Antiques dealers make secret bids against each other for homeowners' most valued possessions. The homeowners then have to decide what to sell and what to keep. Retired maths teacher Melinda wants a good clear out, so she's offering a wide array of antiques, including amber jewellery and Russian dolls. But can she be persuaded to part with her prized, 600-piece Poole pottery collection? Peter and Angela's 1850 home is stuffed with wonderful antiques. Their five children have flown the nest, so it's time for them to get rid of an Edwardian mantle clock and a stunning collection of Georgian silver cutlery.

Britain’s Greatest Gold Medallists ITV1, 20:00 Who is Britain’s Greatest Gold Medallist of the last 100 years? A panel of Britain’s top sports historians, journalists and broadcasters have looked through the achievements of our greatest sportsmen and women to come up with a definitive top twenty. The judges took into account gold medals won at Olympic and Commonwealth Games, World and European Championships. They also considered the stature of the event, the competition faced and the impact of their victory on the nation. The programme counts down the top twenty and interviews these elite men and women. They reflect on their moments of glory and the memories they gave the nation. The top twenty spans nine decades, from Jack Beresford’s heroics on the river in the 20s and 30s, to our current heroes about to compete in London 2012.

Peril from the Seas. Nick Crane leads a journey around the wildest shores of the British Isles to explore dramatic untold stories of peril from the seas. Nick tells the astonishing tale of the Great Storm of 1703, the most devastating weather event ever to hit southern Britain, when lethal winds whipped in from the Atlantic to claim the lives of one in five seamen of the Royal Navy. Ian McMillan uncovers the forgotten story of another shipwreck which held Britain transfixed at the outbreak of the First World War - the hospital ship Rohilla. Tessa Dunlop reveals what a perilous workplace it was for the men building Britain's first iron warships in the mid-19th century. While on the tiny Scottish island of Tiree, Dick Strawbridge reveals a remarkable story from the Second World War of how the timing of the D-Day landings was determined by the heroism of RAF weather forecasters. And Andy Torbet goes in search of a seabird that is famed in folklore as the harbinger of foul weather.
The Churchills Channel 4, 20:00 In an original and unusual major television series, Dr David Starkey tells the story of the two greatest war leaders in British history, both of whom were called Churchill. Everyone knows Winston Churchill led Britain and her Allies in their struggle against Hitler; less well known is John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, who led Britain and her Allies against an earlier would-be dictator of Europe: the Sun King Louis XIV of France.

‘Low Cost’ airlines prove to be big hit
THE Canary Islands are among the leading communities to receive visitors who used ‘low cost’ airlines from January to June of this year, with some 2.9 million passengers. However, the Islands experienced an overall decline of 1.2 per cent, according to data released by the Institute of Tourism (EIT) under the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Across the whole of Spain, the airlines carried 16.4 million passengers in the first six months of the year, representing a rise of 0.8 per cent over the same period
Page 38
last year, and traditional companies moved to 12.3 million passengers, 1.6 per cent less. Thus, the low cost airlines accounted for more than half of air traffic until June, at 57.1 per cent, compared to traditional airlines with 42.9 per cent of travellers. By market, the UK and Germany lead the users of low cost airlines, with 35 and 19.5 per cent of passengers, respectively, an increase of 0.2 per cent for the British market, (5.7 million passengers) and a decrease of 2.5 per cent for Germany, (3.2 million passengers). Ryanair, easyJet and Air Berlin remained as the major low cost carriers in Spain with 33.9 per cent of arrivals.
Cicar promotes Tenerife with CD in all their cars CAR rental company, Cicar, which operates more than seven thousand rental cars in the Canaries, has said that it will be promoting Tenerife inside the cars, by providing an audio CD describing some 58 places on the Island that deserve a visit. Under the slogan ‘Get to Know the Canaries’, and with Canarian Government President Paulino Rivero, and Tenerife Cabildo President, Ricardo Melchior, in attendance, the audio guide was presented at the Tenerife headquarters of Orvecame, a Cabrera Medina company. The event opened with a brief introduction by the writer Fernando G. Delgado, who lent his voice to the Spanish edition of the audio guide to Tenerife. Then Ildefonso Aguilar, editor of the CD, offered an explanation of the
contents. The next speaker was Mamerto Cabrera Cabrera, representing Cicar, who noted that after the audio guides of Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife are all up and running, the company will then produce guides for the remaining Islands. Mamerto Cabrera thanked the Tourism Council of Tenerife for its constant cooperation in the project. The executive said the Cicar audio guide will also be made available to the fleet of taxis on the island, at
no cost, so they can use it to enhance their services. Ricardo Melchior, recalled the group’s original business, Cabrera Medina, founded in 1967, praising the family-run enterprise for its innovative approach. Finally, closing the ceremony, Paulino Rivero, congratulated the company for the new initiative and added that in the current difficult times there are companies that innovate and try to become more competitive and provide higher quality services.
He praised the effort and tenacity of Cabrera Medina, “To not only survive but to grow in times of crisis, creating over a thousand jobs, and contribute to tourism, which represents 30 % of GDP, our biggest industry,” he concluded.

CARL PATTISON
DEAR CHRISTINE
from Robot, Los Cristianos answers your hair questions
Why I stare at hair! WHILE going about my daily life, I stare … at hair! I look to see if it is cared for, well-cut and how the style does or doesn’t suit that person. In the last two weeks, I have seen the problem shown in these photos three times on different girls - all young ones at that – and it’s called TRACTION ALOPECIA. It means that the hair has been pulled back so tightly for years that it literally gets ripped from its root and never returns. On this Island, I see so many women with Tenerife ponytails. They are my pet hate, and you know they are! So here’s why: if you can’t be bothered doing your hair, then try fixing it up in a different way from that scrapedback, wet-through look. Dragging on your wet hair and securing it in an elastic band (you know, the ones that are tied together by a metal strip, which rips out a few hair every time you use them) will, in the end, make you resemble the girls pictured. Wet hair is so fragile and should never be secured back so tightly that it doesn’t get its strength until totally dry. So pulling on it will cause breakage and hair loss. There is no known cure for this except hair grafts, which are now becoming used more widely on women. That’s because replacing the lost hair involves surgically removing some from a donor site, normally your neck,
Page 40
and implanting it around the frontal area, where the hair has been lost. It’s very expensive and extremely painful. Stars such as Naomi Campbell and even Britney have been seen trying to hide their thinning and bald hair because of the tension caused by too many extensions or hair weaves. These also cause this form of alopecia because they, too, pull on the hair, dragging it out by the roots. You may not think it’s happening to you, but check out an old photo of yourself to see if your hairline is receding through too many years of ponytails.
If you need to tie your hair up, then use a gentler method, such as a scrunchy or a hair band - even clamps are softer on your hair than bands. Yes, I know I go on, but it’s your hair I’m thinking of, and once it has gone, there’s no getting it back. You may think that it’s okay to drag young girls’ hair back, but this the age where it all begins - pulling on the hair because, little by little, the hairline disappears. If you are going to wash and tie your hair back, then please let it dry a little first. Take it away from your face softly, and there is no need to pull. Should you need any more proof, just look at the photos again. This isn’t going to be put right with a good cut or a hair treatment. Stop it now, before it’s too late!
Your resident Agony Aunt Email: agony.aunt@canarianweekly.com Dear Christine, I’m a man with a foot fetish and it drives me to distraction, especially here in Tenerife, where bare feet are everywhere. If I went to the beach, the police would be called and I’d be thrown in the cells. You see, whenever I see bare female soles, I’m so turned on I feel desperate to tickle them! How can I cure myself of this? D When we’re really small and crawling around on the floor, we regularly see the feet of our mums and dads. Indeed, parents often tickle their toddlers with their feet. When adolescence arrives, new sexual feelings bring pleasure, and a person who’s already associated feet with pleasure now makes the connection to sexual fulfilment. Wanting to tickle people’s bare feet is wanting to make those people feel things, not least so they’ll do something to make you feel good, too. But as you know, the cross between infancy and sexual maturity isn’t always appropriate. To stop this urge, you could have a couple of sessions with a counsellor trained in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). You’ll have to ask about this when you contact the counsellor. Also, instead of looking at people’s feet to find pleasure, why not start concentrating on their faces and expressions? That’ll help you see them as real people with whom you can have rewarding friendships and relationships. Dear Christine, After we’d had an argument recently, my husband went to a strip club and paid to
have a couple of private dances. The idea of this makes me feel sick and I’m finding it hard to let go. I’ve told him how I feel, but he’s being really dismissive. I don’t know what to do because I feel like he’s cheated. We’ve been married for 15 months and don’t have children. Vikki You have my sympathy. There must be some women who wouldn’t object to their other half having a lap dance, but most would feel as you do - hurt and angry. And you’re right to object because, by being dismissive, he’s discounting your feelings. He’s allowed to feel the way he does, and you’re entitled to look for someone who treats your feelings and you with respect. So what are you going to do about it? You could try telling him once more that you’re very unhappy about it, but I guess he’ll either discount you again or start to hide his activities. In either case you’ll feel sidelined and insecure. And the fact that he likes this type of impersonal, sexual stimulation isn’t exactly encouraging for the kind of relationship you want, is it? Only if he shows genuine regret and acts to demonstrate that he will be faithful to you according to your standards is it worth hanging on to him. But is that likely? Will you be able to trust him again? The choices are that you find a guy who wants the same kind of relationship you do and who has the same views on fidelity and sex as an expression of love, or that you hang around with a guy who doesn’t take you seriously. It’s your call, Vikki. I hope you’ll
have enough faith in yourself to pack him in and start dating until you find someone who thinks the way you do Dear Christine, My fiance and I want to start trying for a baby when we get settled into our new apartment. The thing is, I’m absolutely terrified of needles! Can a pregnancy be safe without the use of needles? Aisling Ante-natal checks routinely include blood-tests to make sure everything’s well with you and your baby. Missing these checks, potentially means not spotting a correctable problem which your baby would then have to suffer, perhaps for the rest of his or her life. I would advise that you try to overcome your phobia. You know logically that a needle is just a short-term, very localised pain. It’s not as bad as period pains, toothache or even most headaches. But the fear you’ve learned to associate with a needle makes the pain seem much greater in your mind. Why not find a therapist who offers hypnosis and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)? You can learn not to experience that out-of-proportion and unhelpful fear in just one or two sessions. The alternative is to hold on to your anxiety and put yourself and your child at risk. When your child is young, he or she will then have to undergo vaccinations to avoid catching potentially-damaging diseases such as measles and mumps. Please try to conquer your fear or you are likely to give your child the impression that injections are something to worry about.

Women really are the clever clogs! SCIENTISTS have proved at last that women ARE the superior sex, even though they themselves have known it for a long while! Psychologists say female IQ scores have raced above men for the first time in 100 years, and it’s all down to being better multi-taskers. Professor James Flynn, a world-renowned authority on IQ tests who conducted the research, said: “In the past century, the IQ scores of both men and women have risen, but women’s have risen faster. “This is a consequence of modernity. The complexity of the modern world is making our brains adapt and raising our IQ. The full effect of modernity on women is only just emerging.” One theory is that modern, multi-tasking women, who juggle their careers with raising a family, are becoming more intelligent as a result of their demanding lifestyles. And after centuries of playing
second-fiddle to men, women have found new confidence and realise they could be more clever than men. Prof Flynn collated IQ test data from countries in Western Europe, America, Canada, New Zealand, Argentina and Estonia. In Australia, he discovered the gap between men and women was insignificant, but in New Zealand, Estonia and Argentina, women scored marginally more than men. “As the world gets more complex, and living in it demands more abstract thought, people are adapting,” he said. “This improvement is more marked for women than for men because they were more disadvantaged in the past.” This latest female victory follows a surge in the academic results of young females. Last year, girls outperformed boys at GCSE, achieving 26.5% A* or A-grade entries, against 19.8% for boys.
Children are warned that telly makes them tubbier CHILDREN who watch more and more telly between the ages of two and four could end up with tubbier waistlines than expected by the time they are 10. Every extra weekly hour watched could add half-amillimetre to the tummy - and could also reduce the muscle strength. A Canadian study tracked the TV habits of 1,314 children, and researchers found that the average weekly viewing hours at the start of the study was 8.8. This increased on average by six hours over the next two years to reach nearly 15 hours a week by the age of 4½. Yet experts decree that kids should not watch more than two hours of TV a day, but 15% of them were watching more than 18 hours per week by that age, according to their parents. The study said the effect of that would, by the age of 10, result in an extra 7.6mm around their stomach because of the TV habit. Apart from measuring
20 July - 26 July 2012
waists, researchers also conducted a standing, longjump test to measure each child’s muscular fitness and athletic ability. They ascertained that an extra hour of TV weekly could decrease the distance a child is able to jump from a standing position by 0.36cm. But the researchers admitted that further research was needed to work out whether television-watching was directly responsible for the health issues they observed. In other words, what a waist of time! But Dr Linda Pagani, study co-author from the University of Montreal, said it was a warning about the factors which could lead to childhood obesity. “The bottom line is that watching too much television - beyond the recommended amounts - is not good,” she said. “Across the Western world, there have been dramatic increases in unhealthy weight for both children and adults in recent decades.”
Silver surfers strike gold! THE over-50s who use the internet regularly, dubbed the silver surfers, are less likely to suffer depression than younger people.
Internet use has always been blamed for mental health problems and social isolation among youngsters, until now! New research, covering almost 8,000 men and women over 50, shows that regular users of social-networking sites are almost one-third less likely to be diagnosed with depression compared with non-users. It is a well-known fact that rates of depression increase with age, but researchers from the University of Illinois found that depression was at its lowest at around 45, and highest among the over-80s. Among the reasons given for the trend are loneliness, social isolation and lack of emotional support. But the new study, the biggest so far on the health effects of internet use among older people, asked participants whether they used the internet regularly, and they were then assessed for mental illness. “Our findings suggest that internet-use has a positive effect on depression,” said Dr Shelia Cotten, who led the research at the University of Alabama and other centres. Another study, carried out at the University of California, showed brain changes in men and women one week after using the internet for the first time. The researchers said internet use stimulates nervecell activity and could boost brain functioning in older adults. And Nichola Adams, whose research at the University of Surrey has looked at barriers to accessing the internet among older people, says: “The internet provides an important tool for the rapidlyincreasing older population to lead independent lives. “It enables them to keep in touch with friends and family, and to make informed decisions on many issues, from health to travel.” She added: ‘The major reasons for not using the
internet were found to be lack of knowledge or access. “Our own research has shown that once those practical issues had been overcome, there were still psychological barriers. “Social and work networks are important, and older users need back-up to overcome their apprehension at the beginning.”

Goat’s cheese is fresh as it’s produced where the animals are farmed, but usually this is on a small, domestic scale. According to www.bbc. co.uk/food, “France produces by far the largest range of commercial examples, from young, soft cheeses suitable for use in desserts to tangy, aged varieties that can be grated like parmesan. The younger cheeses may be flavoured with herbs, pepper or fruit and spread like pâté, and older hard cheeses can be eaten in much the same way as Cheddar. Reliable Mazda MX-5 even safer than before MAZDA’S ever-popular MX-5 has been updated for 2012, with a few modifications, including an improved interior, which will surely delight aficionados. Its new styling, with a larger, more aggressive grille, takes its inspiration from the Takeri concept, which was revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show last December and previews the new Mazda 6. The engine line-up remains unchanged, which means there are 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrols, producing 124bhp and 158bhp respectively. The throttle has been tweaked, though, to provide smoother acceleration. The brakes have also been updated, with the application of a vacuum brake-booster giving a better pedal feel through corners. There’s even a range of new colour-and-trim combinations, as well as a new active bonnet pedestrian-protection system, which automatically raises the trailing edge of the bonnet in the event of an accident. Prices haven’t been announced yet, but expect the fourth-generation MX-5 to start from around £16,000 when it arrives later this year. The company haven’t changed the basic design
of the MX-5 since they introduced the original version in 1989: low weight, moderately-powerful engines and excellent handling have always been what it is all about. But this latest model is bigger, safer and slightly more powerful than its predecessors, and it has more in the way of creature comforts, so it’s easier to live with. Storage space isn’t bad, either, considering the size of the car, but you’ll still need to pack carefully for a long weekend away. The MX-5 has incrediblyaccurate steering and it is extremely nimble on the road. The 1.8 and 2.0-litre engines have 124bhp and 158bhp respectively - just enough to make the Mazda a speedy little sports car. The 1.8 has a five-speed gearbox, while the 2.0-litre has a six-speed, and both have a short, accurate action that makes it easy to find the right gear. An optional, six-speed, Sport Tech, automatic gearbox, with wheelmounted paddles, is best avoided because it is not as effective as the manual. And the 2.0-litre models are arguably more fun to drive as they are fitted with a limited-slip differential. This MX-5 is more comfortable than you’d expect. It travels over rough surfaces well and there’s little in the way of vibration
- as is often the case in a convertible. Sport Tech models are less comfortable but, for the most part, the MX-5 is about as relaxing and comfortable as a cabriolet gets. The entry-level 1.8-litre model doesn’t come with stability control, which means it is more likely to catch unwary drivers out in slippery conditions. All other versions come with it as standard, though, as well as side, driver and passenger airbags. A reinforced windscreen frame and rollover hoops are also standard.
electrically, folding away in around 12 seconds. It is then stowed cleverly behind the cabin, leaving the entire boot space intact. The entry-level 1.8-litre feels quite basic, so the favourite is either of the Venture Edition models, or the 2.0-litre Sport Tech, with additional standard equipment. Roadster Coupe models are more desirable, but carry a sizeable premium. The MX-5 is well-priced, though, and you won’t find a convertible that offers so much fun for a similar price. The most frugal MX-5 is the
1.8, which returns 39.8mpg and has emissions of 167g/ km. The 2.0 Sport Tech offers 36.2mpg, along with 181g/ km. The 2.0 Powershift, with automatic gearbox, is poorer still, at 35.3mpg and 188g/km. Resale values are reasonable, so it’s no wonder that the MX-5 is incredibly popular with second-hand buyers. But MX-5 lovers may want to get their hands on this new edition, when it eventually appears this year. After all, they just know they’ll get a decent price on a trade-in!
Alpine concept on the cards reveals happy Renault chief
A PRODUCTION version of the sensational Renault Alpine A110-50 concept, which starred at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed, could arrive by 2015 at a cost of some £40,000. Renault’s chief operating officer, Carlos Tavares, says: “I’m determined to relaunch the Alpine brand. The first car will be a 21st Century interpretation of the A110 Berlinette, and it will cost
20 July - 26 July 2012
The earliest MX-5s are still very reliable cars, and the machine has been hailed for its superb durability ever since, and, as ever, so you can purchase with confidence. You don’t buy a Mazda MX-5 for space but for its size, and the 150-litre boot is just about big enough for a couple of soft bags for a weekend away. The car’s fabric hood is easy to fold down: just release a couple of clips and drop it back, and it doesn’t eat into the boot space. The folding hard-top Roadster Coupe model is more secure, and is operated
around 50,000 euros. “That’s the direction we’re heading in, and after that we can do anything we like.” For the sports coupe to make financial sense, however, Renault need to spread costs by teaming up with another car-maker. Tavares said as much by adding: “A deal exists and it’s progressing. We’ll make a decision on the car by the end of 2012 and it will take
three to five years from then.” The Renault chief will not say who the partner is, but all the signs point to Mercedes. Renault and alliance partner Nissan have an ongoing tie-up with Mercedes, and they’re already working together on the next Twingo. The only question mark is where the mid-engined platform will come from. This suggests the imminent SLC AMG coupe, which would
slot below the SLS AMG in the range, could use a midengined lay-out. Rumours have been circulating that Lotus could be also in the frame. They are already providing Infiniti with the Evora chassis and hybrid technology for the Emerg-E. But it’s doubtful whether Lotus could offer the economies of scale Renault need to make the Alpine project work.

AFTER an arduous six-week losing streak in the Premier League, Target Army finally got themselves some points with a 6-2 win over Team Valle. Their man-of-the-Match, Chris was backed-up ably by Mark, who hit his second maximum.
Salute the Target Army! A fine contest at Cozy Wanderers saw Phoenix Bar pegged back from 3-1 up to 3-3. Kill Bill’s 180 in the second doubles was to no avail as the visitors took that rubber and the trebles for a hard-fought victory. La Central’s 6-2 loss at Xtreme
include maximums for visiting Steve Sub and homies Mike and London, while Bar 180 A had a comfortable night at Team Valle. In Division 1, Gaffers A star Gary, also known as the man in the hat, struck his second 180 during a 7-1 drubbing of Bar
180 B. The result keeps them a point ahead of Ourplace Naturals, who won by the same margin at Ensecan. Rood got back to winning ways, thanks to a fine performance by Betty, who hit 104 and 120 check-outs during a 5-3 success over Barracuda

Island skipper catches his ticket to World Cup final THE World Cup biggame fishing qualifier, based at San Miguel, was won by the Maynieves boat, skippered by Fuerteventura’s Alfonso Valls. A dozen boats contested the event, attracting some of the world’s leading fishermen in this category, with the winner earning a place in next April’s grand final in Quepos, Costa Rica.
Page 46
Runner-up was the Bartola, which led after the opening day with one catch, and one that got away. The chase for blue marlin began last Thursday and finished on Saturday, but few boats met with success. Overall, 10 marlin were hooked, but just four were landed - two by the Maynieves - which were weighed, photographed, tagged and then returned to the Atlantic. A triumphant Valls said their fish were caught off
La Gomera, weighing in at around 300kg and 250kg. It was the World Cup’s second successive annual qualifier here, and it proved again why the Atlantic waters around Tenerife are regarded as one of the best areas for catching huge species of billfish, from 300-400kg. It is also a great compliment to San Miguel because it is the only Tenerife marina able to cater for a competition of this magnitude. It is also based ideally for plenty of big-game hunting at sea.
This event was again organised by the Marina, in conjunction with Bertram and IGFA (International Game Fishing), with backing from Tenerife Tourism, the Aguamarina Golf Hotel, Cicar, Gold and Axa and San Miguel de Abona Council. Photos: Sir Old Golfer.

World windsurfers put on a Gran show GRAN CANARIANS Philip Koster and Iballa Ruano Moreno imposed themselves on the second round of the PWA World Cup Windsurfing event at El Medano over the weekend. Koster won here last year, with Iballa’s twin sister,
Daida, also triumphing then. The 34-year-old sisters have dominated their sport for years, and there seems no stopping them. Huge crowds gathered to watch the spectacular show, and they were not disappointed as the world’s finest windsurfers demonstrated their exceptional skills, in perfect conditions, at windy Medano.

Canarian footballer scores winner as Spain win under 19's Euro Championships SPAIN has been crowned champions of Europe again, this time at the Under-19 level. They beat Greece 1-0,thanks to a goal from the Canary Island’s own Jesé in the 80th minute, with the threat of extratime hanging in the air inside the Tallin Stadium. Manager Lopetegui’s boys started brightly, with the experience of having beaten this Greek team earlier in the tournament. Pressure from
20 July - 26 July 2012
the attacking line pinned their opponents back from the start. But in contrast to that opening match, when they got the ball back Spain weren’t hasty in building their moves. An inspired Oliver took the pace out of the game when it was required and helped his team pick up the rhythm when the Greeks looked vulnerable. At 17-years-old, this kid could lead a course on making decisions. The first 45 minutes were an exhibition by Lopetegui’s team, in attack as well as in defence. The only thing Spain lacked was a goal. After the re-start, a furious 30-yard strike from Campaña smacked against the bar. Six minutes later, Suso’s direct free-
kick also made contact with the woodwork. They wanted one, clearly. They deserved it, too. Enter Jesé, the hero of the tournament. In the 80th minute, Deulofeu passed a ball into the middle from the right and it fell to the CanaryIslander, who knocked it between Dioudis and his far post with the inside of his right boot. One-Nil. In the last 10 minutes Spain, buoyed by the goal, besieged Greece ,who just tried to hold on to the ball. And when the referee signalled the end of the encounter on 93 minutes, the country, the bench and the players exploded with joy.
CD Tenerife's team starts to take shape JUST three weeks after CD Tenerife failed in its bid for promotion to Segunda A in a defeat in the second leg of the tie against Ponferradina at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, the team for next season is emerging. Alvaro Cervera will debut as coach of Tenerife. His assistants will be two in-house professionals, Roberto Perera and assistant trainer Guillermo Rodriguez, who will perform the same role as last season.
Also making their debut is, from Eibar, defensive midfielder Inigo Ros and on the right, from Melilla, Javier Moyano, two signings made by the athletic director Quique Medina. Also onboard, from Espanyol, are Suso Santana and Cristo Martin. In addition to the new faces, are goalkeepers Sergio Aragoneses and Razak, defenders Sergio Rodriguez, Javier Tarantino, Raul Llorente, Ayoze Placeres and David Medina, midfielders, Flores Chechu, Ferrán Tacón y Luismi Loro, and up front, Aridane Santana. Returning after their absence last year are Jesus Alvaro (CD Leganes) and
attackers Omar Ramos (Almeria and Huesca), Nico (Guadalajara), Josmar Zambrano (Zamora, Venezuela) and Germain (Denia). This group will join eight team players for training: Alberto Jimenez Perez Ayoze, Yeray Gonzalez, Roberto Gutierrez, Jairo Izquierdo, Abel Suarez, Sandro Bruno Rodriguez and Gonzalez. Bruno returns to Tenerife after playing on loan at Teruel. Leaving the team are Jorge Perona (goes to Cartagena), Alvaro Zazo (signed for Guadalajara), Pablo Sicilia, Kiko Raton, Christopher Juncal, Marcos Rodriguez, Ruben Rosquete, Meji, Bravo and Kitoko.

Horoscopes of the week Cancer
(June 22nd - July 23rd) Celebrations of all kinds will be the centre of events this week. You may find out a secret or two about certain individuals, but beware whom you tell. Reminiscing over old memories will help you feel at ease over the coming few days, and to make peace with what did or didn’t happen. Luck will be on your side when entering competitions. LEO (July 24thAugust 23rd) You’ve been building up to some dramatics, and now you’ve got them. You’ll have the urge to spring-clean your entire house and life, and have the mindset of “out with the old in with the new”. This also applies to your social life at present, and any people whom you don’t really get on with should be phased out of your social circle. VIRGO (August 24thSeptember 23rd) The more you talk to people, the less likely you are to bottle things up. However, you’re nit-picking about things you wouldn’t usually even give a second thought to, and you’re in danger of making yourself look immature. If only you would speak about what is really on your mind, because all our lives would then be a lot easier. LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd) Love, romance and matters of the heart are going to be at the top of your agenda. Be prepared to make some sort of a compromise if you want to win the complete trust and respect of the person concerned, though. After all, you don’t want to set restrictions for yourself in time to come, do you? By the way, it’s worth accepting party invites this week. SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd) An old habit is best left in the past. Do remember this because you appear to be going to extreme lengths to avoid a certain person. However, the sooner you deal with this situation, the sooner you can relax and stop looking over your shoulder. Venus, the planet of love is offering you a way with
Page 48
words, which is sure to see you winning over even the coldest of hearts. SAGIT TARIUS (November 23rdDecember 21st) Don’t rely on promises from friends, as many of the signs are doing what they want, when they want. If you want a job done, be it personal or professional, do it yourself - or leave it until you are certain you can approach the right person for help. But don’t let yourself get bogged down with worry over a particular mission. C A P R I C O R N (December 22ndJanuary 20th) Watch out for a jealous person trying to goad you into a row at work. Many opinions have been exchanged between you and a close one, but you don’t appear to have expressed a reaction to that person’s needs. Unless you find your voice, he or she is going to assume you’re not in favour if you don’t offer your support. Speak now before it’s too late. AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th) The urge to do something naughty promises some dramatics. However, this particular day would be a good time to tie up the loose ends left over from last week. In fact, ideas that you are currently having could be the key to the changes in life you have been seeking. Love may see you having to travel further than you’d like this weekend. PISCES (February 20th-March 20th) Don’t allow a friend to dictate your lifestyle because you are
stronger than that. This is your chance to recoup money that has been going out of your pocket at such a speed these past few days. Lies you tell will be obvious, so stick to facts, not fiction. If not, you could end up being both embarrassed and short on friends. A change of job may be written in your stars this month. ARIES (March 21stApril 20th) Daily life should have plenty to keep you occupied and excited. There appears to be quite a bit of activity on your social scene, and you are about to be offered the chance to expand your horizons. You have been bored with your usual group of friends for some time now, but life and love for you are about to get a whole lot more interesting. TAURUS (April 21stMay 21st) Relationships get taken to the next level. An odd request from a new acquaintance should be viewed carefully. Relatives become too involved in your affairs, so don’t be afraid to say so. An admirer whom you are not keen on could actually boost your morale and create jealousy from someone for whom you do care. And finances are showing signs of improving at last. GEMINI (May 22ndJune 21st) Don’t let down those to whom you have made promises. Disruptive elements around now could cause you to be inpatient, quicktempered and snappy, so be careful. A romantic understanding is getting out of hand. The ball is in your court. A financial boost is quickly followed by a new commitment.
