The Canary Islands Government announced at a press conference yesterday (Thursday) through its Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, that it had “found the presence of horsemeat” in 1,089kgs of meat (nearly a ton), equating to 7,000 burgers, in the Canaries. Gustavo Matos said the items belonged to Great Co. Matos confirmed that the Canary Islands Government would not open an official investigation and clarified that the frozen burgers did not pose any “health risk”. He believes “the most appropriate” course of action will be to destroy the items to avoid the possibility of them re-
entering the food chain. The Las Chafiras warehouse refused to comment and instead, referred Canarian Weekly to its head office in La Nucia, Alicante. A spokesman for the British food service company involved in supplying the burgers told Canarian Weekly: “The Government has been in touch with us. It’s looking to investigate Continued on page 4.

Why are you shunning our public transport?
TENERIFE bus company TITSA this week announced that it carried three million fewer passengers in 2012 than the previous year. Break it down and that adds up to a drop of over 8,000 passengers each day on the Island’s only public bus service. Even though these latest figures show that 36m of us used the bus in 2012, the figures were much higher in 2011, totalling 39.3m. Go back a further year, and the passenger figure was around the 40m mark, according to the TITSA website. The Cabildo has pledged that it will have to make more cuts to ensure that the company does not fall into deficit this fiscal year. The company believe that the reduction in passenger numbers is down to the 10% increase in ticket prices which, in the big scheme of things, was miniscule. So perhaps TITSA (Transportes Interurba-
nos de Tenerife) and the Tenerife Cabildo should look at the issue from a wider perspective - and from the shoes of “potential” users. The reason for the Cabildo’s interest is that TITSA is a public limited company which, belongs to the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife (Tenerife Island Council). This public service has developed and grown over the last 30 years and is key to people getting around the Island – both residents (especially workers) and tourists. TITSA’s budget has already been cut by eight million euros, and there are plans to trim it by a further 5.6m euros this year. In recent weeks, several meetings with workers’ representatives have taken place to find ways to achieve this figure. That explains why, last Monday, there was a medium-sized protest, which needed a police presence outside the main bus station in Santa Cruz, the Island’s capital, just next to the Palacio de Justicia. Initially as you would
22nd February - 28th February 2013
expect, all the unions have rejected the new cuts, which even led to a strike call during Carnival time, by the UGT and CCOO. During the past 12 months, because of the negative figures in recent years and the new state legislation mandating the budget balance, TITSA was forced to cut its bills by around 8m euros, as already stated. The company undertook a restructuring of the bus lines, in order to reduce some of the deficit and the 10% increase in fares. Despite these actions, the accounts are still showing a negative figure, and this year
TITSA will continue cost-cutting to maintain the company. So, what does this mean? We can expect further changes in bus routes, enhancing tourist routes to attract more users and visitors. And next week, the company will meet with the workers’ representatives to discuss ways to continue carrying out planned economic adjustments, which the unions are against. Perhaps the reason for the falling passenger numbers is simpler than just fare increases. Perhaps individuals who used public transport regularly have stopped taking the bus and found alternative
means because their fare has risen a few cents? Maybe the strikes, which have obviously affected workers mostly, have persuaded them to find other ways of getting to work, such as car-sharing with neighbours or nearby friends. Or can the drop-off be accredited to the following: Visitor numbers to the island have dropped The increased number of unemployed - no work equals no need to travel The rise of out-of-town shopping malls, where people need to drive as the bus doesn’t stop nearby? The number of increasing pick-pocket incidents at bus stations and bus stops deterring people using public transport Perhaps the rise in AllInclusive holidays has also contributed to the downturn. Those visitors, wearing coloured plastic wristbands, are so enamoured of their free hotel facilities unlimited free booze, regular meals, nightly entertainment and even poolside snacks in some
places - that they have no wish to spend unnecessary money by visiting other areas. It is important to bear in mind that TITSA is not like a UK provincial bus service. The company’s buses run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. To ensure that they reach travellers, there around 3,700 busstops dotted all over the island, with a fleet of 550 vehicles - one of the most modern fleets in Europe - and 1,600 employees. TITSA’s Mission statement is: “To provide a public road transport service in Tenerife that will meet the needs and expectations of the local residents who travel around the island.” So why not get a few people together of varying nationalities, residents and tourists alike, and ask them what is deterring people from using the bus service? We’d love to learn of their responses. And, no doubt, so would TITSA officials and the Cabildo.

Gin sales are booming
DIAGEO, which owns the Gordon’s and Tanqueray brands of gin, is to invest £1m in a marketing campaign which will see the company launch a collection of flavoured gins next month - including Crisp Cucumber capitalising on the spirit’s current popularity. Spain and the UK are among the biggest ginbuyers, despite both countries still suffering a recession. Spain’s gin market grew 20% last year, although the county hit record unemployment figures.
Ferrovial’s new energy source SPANISH company Ferrovial has purchased Enterprise, one of the UK’s largest energy and water companies, for 443 million euros (£385m). Ferrovial already has a presence in the UK via Amey. Now, in addition to the prime activities of road and rail maintenance and services, it will enter the utility and power sector.

Tragedy ship cruises on
INVESTIGATIONS are continuing into the recent tragedy involving the Thomson Majesty cruise ship, in which five crew members died and another three were injured when a routine exercise went wrong and a lifeboat plunged to the sea. It happened in the Santa Cruz port of La Palma, but the ship moved on to Tenerife’s Santa Cruz Port last Friday, where the 1,100 passengers began their week-long cruise to Gran Canaria, La Palma, Madeira, Morocco and Lanzarote.

LONG-TIME and well-respected President of the Tenerife Cabildo and Coalicion Canaria, (CC), Ricardo Melchior, has publicly announced that he will step down before the end of the current term, saying, “I would like Carlos Alonso to be my successor”.
Melchior has been President of the Tenerife Cabildo since 1999. However, there still remains much to be revealed. Speaking to reporters after the press conference, Melchior said he has not yet decided the date of his departure, but remarked that it will be “at least” a few months before the next election. Ricardo Melchior expressed his amazement at the reaction of many observers, saying, “Why the big surprise? “The parties must be renewed, especially in the case of those who have been in their positions for a long time. And the changes should not occur the day before
the elections, because the people would only be confused,” he said. “If you know you will not continue in your position, you must give way and step aside at least a few months before, out of respect for the people”. Melchior added that
his successor, Vice President and Tourism Chief Carlos Alonso, is an “extraordinary politician” that meets “all the necessary profiles” and added, “People have to know that there is a serious, good and hopeful alternative,” he said.
The general secretary of the CC, Fernando Clavijo said Melchior is an “important asset” for his party and a politician who “walks the walk”. Melchior’s announcement coincided with him celebrating his 66th birthday last Monday.
Horsemeat rears head in Tenerife
Continued from front. whether any of our burgers contain horsemeat. “On Friday (today), three officials are coming here from three independent organisations, and one is the Spanish Government.” When asked about the volume of burgers involved, he said: “It’s nowhere near the number quoted.” These facts were acsertained as being correct as we went to press last night. According to the company's website, it has distribution centres - apart from the Canaries - in La Nucia,
Cartagena, Almeria and Mallorca. As with similar cases over the past weeks in the UK, it is the public’s perception that they have been eating horsemeat, and the term being bandied about is “the yuk” factor. That’s because they are being misled into thinking that a product is solely beef. Matos pointed out that these frozen burgers have been distributed in the catering sector including hotels, bars and restaurants. The volume of horsemeat contained in the burgers varies from between 5% and 40%.
The irony is that if you’re staying in an “AllInclusive” hotel, you could be tucking in to these frozen burgers. These types of accommodation offer lower-cost, fast-food to keep their overall expenses down, and also to help make them more attractively-priced for holiday-makers. We now know that consumers are being duped across Europe by the product labelling because they are entitled to know, but are not informed, what they are eating. The big issue is that there is a mass variant in the price of the meat,
so this is where the fraud aspect comes into play. It is thought that this particular consignment may be linked back to an Irish abattoir, but Great Co would not confirm its supplier. According to Matos, consumer inspectors have put in place the relevant procedures, and the company involved has shown “good co-operation”. Now, the authorities are seeking to identify the outlets and send them circulars to advise them of the facts, and the necessary action to take.

'I am an angel of Jesus Christ'
THE murder trial of Bulgarian Deyan Deyanov is due to conclude todau (Friday), with the jury presenting their verdict following several days of gruelling testimony describing the horrific killing of 60 year-old Jennifer MillsWestley on May 13th, 2011 in Los Cristianos. As the trial reached the end of the penultimate day, the court heard testimony via video link from a couple in Warrington, UK, describing the brutal attack in such detail that Ms. Mills-Westley’s daughter Samantha was unable to hold back the tears. The trial had kicked off on Monday with the prosecution and defence both stating their cases to the ninemember jury. The victim is survived by daughters Sarah Louise Mears and Samantha Mills-Westley who were in attendance along with Ms Mear’s partner and the victim’s brother and wife, at the Palacio de Justicia, in the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. On Monday Deyanov sat motionless dressed in a grey jumper and dark tracksuit bottoms and trainers with his back to the public, guarded by two armed National Police Officers. The trial began with the court official detailing the attack, the resulting investigation and the murder charges against the accused. He stated that the prosecution were calling for 20 years detention in a secure psychiatric unit and 200,000 euros compensation for the victim’s family. The prosecutor addressed the jury with his opening statement claiming he had clear proof that Deyanov was guilty. He then explained how he expected the case to proceed. Attention then turned to the defence, who reiterated much of what the prosecutor had said. He then urged the jury to disregard any sensational press

Cameron? He beggars belief reports they may have been exposed to. “These are serious charges, “said lawyer Francisco Beltran Aroca, “and the prosecution will be presenting my client as a killer as has the press, however he is a sick man. “A sick person needs help, which he never had, and without it, it’s easy to turn to crime. Without help they will do things with no awareness of the gravity or consequences of their actions. “I ask you to put yourselves in his position, living on the streets, struggling with mental health issues, so I ask you for a verdict and a punishment proportional to the crime whilst bearing in mind the mental state of the accused.” As court usher prepared video equipment to show footage from the scene of the crime, Deyanov demanded that he too be allowed to see the evidence and his chair was turned to reveal his handcuffed wrists on the table in front of him. He stared unblinking at the screen with no

sign of remorse in his dark rimmed eyes. The court fell silent as the violent and distressing images were shown to which some were seen to react in horror. The evidence went on for more than ten minutes, during which time Deyanov became increasingly restless, but never taking his eyes from the screen. Throughout, the proceedings the victim’s family, who were not exposed to the shocking images, sat quietly in the front row of the spectator section clearly at a loss as to what was taking place before them in the Spanish court. Deyanov was then questioned by the prosecution and the defence, after confirming to the judge he understood his rights. He did not understand however of what he was accused, despite seeing the video. He claimed to have no recollection of the day or the events and after the blood stained knife was produced as evidence he once again stated he recalled nothing, not even that he’d been in
Tenerife. Finally the prosecution asked if he was taking medication for his condition at this time to which he replied no. The defence then set about showing that Deyanov was and is seriously disturbed. After re-establishing his lack of memory of the incident he asked him did you do drugs. “Yes he said, crack and LSD.” “You told me you hear voices” “Yes.” he said “What do they say?” “They tell me I’m an angel of Jesus Christ. I’ve heard these voices for five years they are my guardians, they look after me. Sometimes they say kill, sometimes they say fight, hit, pray” With that the judge then called Sarah Mears to take the stand on the matter of compensation. Sarah showed little emotion as she stated that she had no previous knowledge of the accused nor did her mother, “I just want justice for my mum.” Two witnesses then gave their evidence, both confirming the identity of the accused claiming he was the same man they had seen, covered in blood from the waist down and carrying the victim’s head in his right hand. They said he’d appeared extremely agitated as he ran from the Chinese shop. The trial will conclude with the jury’s verdict and sentencing by the presiding judge.
AT LAST, the British Prime Minister appears to be waking up … far too late, though! David Cameron wants to ensure that the UK does not become a “soft touch”. But where on earth has he been? Since he became Prime Minister in May 2010, Britain has become swamped with more and more foreigners, claiming all sorts of hand-outs - and getting them. Meanwhile, those poor old Brits who have paid their dues, and who are struggling to stay warm throughout the terrible winter they are experiencing, are left shivering and scratching their heads at the injustice of it all. True, Cameron’s ministers, at his insistence, are now reviewing access to housing, healthcare and the benefits system for foreign nationals. He told MPs last week: “It isn’t right if our systems are being abused. The rights of British citizens should not be enjoyed by anyone who just chooses to come here.” The PM reassured them that a detailed review was being led by immigration minister Mark Harper, and added: “I will make sure that we are not a soft touch for those who want to come here,” Cameron’s new-found, get-tough attitude really does make you wonder what he believes has been going on for years in the UK. Hasn’t he read about the dole scroungers, the foreigners who are
allowed to send our hard-earned money to their children living abroad, or those who make a mockery of the welfare system by cheating with a string of false identities? If, perchance, they happen to be caught after years of living the life of Riley, with posh homes, posher holidays and the poshest of luxury possessions, you just know they’ll receive just a few months in prison, if that. Oh yes, they’ll be ordered to forfeit their properties and made to pay back all the loot they have stolen. But if they’re smart enough to accumulate great wealth and outfox the “system” for years, don’t you think they’ll have been smart enough to have salted bundles away? Just in case! The problem with the Prime Minister and many of his Tory cronies is that many of them have never lived in the real world. They’ve have never had a “proper” job and, almost certainly, have never had to worry where the money will come from for the next fat bill that lands on their doorstep. Neither, of course, will that woman with 11 children for whom the Government is building a brand-new, six-bedroom house to accommodate them all. I rest my case!

New website helps British citizens make correct use of the UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards A NEW website that explains how British citizens should use their UK-issued European Health Insurance Cards (EHICs) has been launched as part of a campaign to clear up common confusion over how to obtain healthcare in Spain. The website www. healthcareinspain.eu provides comprehensive information on the use of EHICs, whether visiting or living in Spain. What you should know about the European Health Insurance Card A UK-issued European Health Insurance Card should only be used
to access medicallynecessary state treatment during the course of a temporary stay in Spain. It does not provide access to all state treatment but for those in Spain on a temporary stay, it is the correct way to access state healthcare. British citizens who live mainly in Spain should change the way they are registered, because for them the UK European Health Insurance Card is not the correct form of health cover. The new website www. healthcareinspain.eu provides an interactive questionnaire that,
depending on personal circumstances, links British residents to the Spanish social security webpage or a search page for the local INSS office or local health centre. David Pennington, Head of the Department of Health’s International Healthcare team, says: “Many British citizens living in Spain are confused about how to access state healthcare and many use their EHIC cards when they should be accessing healthcare in another way. “This website is part of a campaign to explain who can use a UK-issued
EHIC and what it’s for. It also helps people to find out about other ways to access state healthcare in Spain, depending on their circumstances.” The website www. healthcareinspain.eu is part of an EU-funded campaign by the UK Department of Health and Valencia Health Authority that aims to raise awareness of the correct use of EHICs among Britons visiting and living in the Valencia region. The information on the website is also relevant to British citizens across the whole of Spain, including the mainland and islands.

Tomatoes feel the squeeze TOMATOES grown in the Canary Islands are not selling as well as in previous years in the UK and the Netherlands, the traditional export markets. It is down to lower production and fierce competition with Morocco, but advertising campaigns are helping tomato producers to increase their sales in Sweden, giving them a stronger presence in the Scandinavian market. Conversely, plantains (starchy, low-sugar bananas which have to be cooked) are still failing to enter the German
market, where both sectors played a key role during Fruit Logistica 2013. Canarian representatives had planned to make use of the fair to compensate for the budget cuts affecting their exports. According to studies from the Canary Islands Government, the tomato sector has been affected in the past few years by poor weather (strong winds or cold temperatures) and by a huge reduction from 3,200 to 1,200 hectares of arable land, while Morocco has profited
from agreements with the European Union. The value of Canary exports, which reached 95.5 million euros in 2008, fell by almost half to 51m euros in 2011. Roberto Góiriz, President of the Agrarian Association of Young Growers of Las Palmas (Asaja), confirmed that 2012 closed with a similar production. Góiriz complained about Morocco’s “repeated infringements” of the maximum quotas and prices established by its treaties with the Union. A major blow to the
Canarian tomato industry is that the value of its shipments to Southampton and Rotterdam has fallen by over 50%. However, the sector has increased its efforts in the past few years to gain ground in Central and Eastern Europe, but especially in Scandinavia. Large advertising campaigns have been conducted there since the beginning of the century. And one of the most recent, in 2011, was carried out through ICA, Sweden’s largest food distributor, and Ewer.

Olympic Torch to visit Guía de Isora THE London Olympic Torch will be arriving in Tenerife on 11th March for a tour of five schools in Guía de Isora. This has been made possible thanks to Muriel Brown, 81, who has agreed to bring the
torch that she carried as part of the Kexborough leg of the torch relay back in June 2012 to Tenerife for her greatgranddaughters to show to their friends at school. Muriel is an ex-World record holder for the over 50’s 10k run in 1983 and has numerous other achievements under

her belt in the world of athletics. She was also a torchbearer as part of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002. Muriel’s granddaughter, Kirsty Wood, has lived in Tenerife 12 years, and was working as an English Conversation Assistant in two public schools in Guía de Isora for 5 years as part of the Auxiliares de Conversación project which was halted two years ago by the Consejería de Educación. Because of her connections with the local schools in the municipality, she thought that it would be a great opportunity to bring the torch to as many children as possible during its 11day stay in Tenerife. After talking to the five biggest schools in the municipality, the torch
will now be doing a tour of CEIP Teobaldo Power, CEIP Almácigo, CEIP Adoración, CEIP La Era and CEIP Chigora giving around 2000 children to opportunity to see and hold a real Olympic torch. It will be accompanied by a presentation, question and answer session and a short quiz on the history of the torch, the history of the Olympics and Spain and the Canaries’ achievements in the London 2012 Olympics. Kirsty, who is a CELTA qualified TEFL teacher, now gives private classes in the Forum 4 Academy in Guía de Isora along with her partner, Gordon, who is also an ex-conversation assistant. And she has also set up a new academy
alongside her French colleague, Muriel Nadal, giving private language classes in English, French and Spanish in Playa San Juan. If you would like to see the torch, it will available by appointment only

Wigan’s ray of sunshine in the battle for survival WIGAN Athletic’s training week at Costa Adeje’s Tenerife Top Training (T3) camp, was hailed a “great success” by manager Roberto Martinez. It certainly proved so, and not even pictures of players by their hotel swimming pool, which upset fans after being posted on Twitter, could detract from the benefit of their warm-weather training. Despite their tense battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League, Wigan showed a touch of class after returning home last Thursday with a 4-1 win at Huddersfield on Sunday to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals. They now play Everton or Oldham next month for a semi-final place, but ahead of that, there’s a vital relegation clash tomorrow (Saturday) at Reading, who are just above them in the danger zone. But all that seemed far away as they settled
in to their five-day stay over here, which included intense workouts against the idyllic backdrop of Mount Teide. The squad were given the warmest of receptions at their hotel - and top-class facilities were made available, which allowed them to continue working away from the T3 playing field.
Manager Martinez said: “From the first day we arrived, we were made to feel extremely welcome, and the local hospitality was incredible. “We couldn’t have wished for a better environment in which to prepare for the most important stage of our season. “Our players benefited immensely
from the facilities and surroundings, taking in extra Vitamin D from the fantastic weather, and completing more minutes on the training pitch, thanks to the conditions. “Overall, it was a great success, and a period in our season that has prepared our team for what is to come in a way no other week could have done.”
Iberia’s walk-outs are causing flight turmoil THE strike by Iberia staff during a 15-day period, which started on Monday, will lead to more than 1,200 flights being cancelled. The strike, in protest at the airline’s restructuring plans which includes the loss

of nearly 4,000 jobs - will also affect the tourism industry in the Canary Islands. Among the 206 shorthaul cancellations, there have been several domestic flights ruled out. Iberia was forced to
cancel 415 of the 1,062 scheduled flights during the first week of strikes, which began on Monday and include today (Friday). And the backlash takes in rival airlines Vueling, Air Nostrum, Iberia Express and
Air Berlin, who have cancelled more than 800 flights between them because they cannot get sufficient groundhandling staff, provided by the Iberia Airport Services division. The Ministry of Development has set a minimum service for the strike days, which will guarantee 100% of flights to the Canary Islands and 50% of services between Spanish and foreign cities. But Rafael Gallego, President of the Spanish Federation of Travel Agents (CEAV), said: “The Canary Islands is the Spanish community most affected, despite the minimum services to protect every flight. “That’s because Iberia provides groundhandling staff for their own aircraft, and also for
around 15 other airlines bringing tourists to the islands.” Iberia officials have released a statement in which they have called for the unions to act responsibly by calling off the strikes, which “hurt customers”. It is anticipated that
the economic cost of the strike will cost the company more than The airline, which will lose up to three million euros daily, has launched a contingency plan for customers, with rates being eased to facilitate exchange tickets or refunds.

The incident took place on the TF-65, in the municipality of San Miguel on Sunday 17th February at 23:44 hours. Bomberos, SUC ambulance, Local Police and Guardia Civil attended the scene. The person riding the scooter had

been trapped beneath the vehicle and was confirmed dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries by the emergency services, at that time due to a lack of paperwork the man was unidentified. It tragically transpires that it was well known entertainer Fife Sinclaire. Fife was a popular singer and compere in Tenerife. Our condolences go to his family and friends. Heather Frost, a 37-year-old jobless woman, appeared on ITV’s Daybreak show to be quizzed about her lifestyle on benefits. She sparked an outrage when it was revealed that her local council, in Gloucester, would actually build the £400,000 house for her family in Tewkesbury. And she was accused of taking taxpayers for a ride over claims that she was pocketing enough benefits to keep the horse her daughter owns. There was further anger after Frost said she did not “put a gun
to somebody’s head” to demand money, and was simply taking what was on offer. She did not want two of the children’s three fathers to contribute to her finances and was happy, instead, to accept the help that “is out there”. When tackled about the thorny subject on Daybreak, she said: “I would love to go out and work. I took a business plan two years ago to
try to open a shop and do my own business, but then I fell ill. “I would love to come off benefits and support my children myself, but there is help out there. “I’m not getting anything I’m not entitled to. I understand people’s resentment, but I didn’t beg, or put a gun to somebody’s head to get any help.” Frost currently lives in two semidetached houses, knocked together in Churchdown, near Gloucester, with children Sophie, 21, Toby, 19, Angel, 16, Jay, 14, Chloe, 13, Paige, 11, Emily, 10, Beth, eight, Ruby, seven, Daisy, five, and Tilly, three. Her partner Jake, who fathered six of the youngsters, lives there, as well as two grandchildren. Frost denied saying she would want a bigger property if the new house was not up to scratch, but said she may turn down the offer. “With the hassle I’m getting at the moment,
it is 50-50 as to whether I take it,” she added. Critics believe the case has highlighted Britain’s broken benefits system. Tory MP Peter Bone said: “If you’re going to have so many children, you should be in a position to look after them and not expect the state to do it. “There must be something wrong with a system that allows that to happen.” Matthew Sinclair, of the Tax- Payers’ Alliance, said: “Heather Frost is right to point out that it is our broken benefits system which handed her a home that many people couldn’t afford themselves.” Frost’s daughter, Angel, appeared on the programme and denied claims that taxpayers were footing the bill to keep their horse, at an estimated cost of £200 a month. “The horse is mine,” she said. “I got given it from a friend around the corner. I pay for it, I pay its rent, I pay vet bills, I pay food.”
Three killed in Vegas CNN have reported that three people have been killed and at least three others injured in a shooting and fiery six-vehicle crash along the Las Vegas Strip, Nevada in the early hours of Thursday morning. The incident began about 4:20 a.m. when someone in an SUV, stopped at lights on Las
Vegas Boulevard near Caesars Palace, fired into a Maserati that also had stopped at the light, Las Vegas police said. The Maserati moved into the intersection with Flamingo Road and collided with a taxicab, starting a chain of crashes that involved four other vehicles, police said.
Police spokesman Jose Hernandez said that the cab’s two passengers and the Maserati’s driver died. John Lamb, who was inside Caesars Palace, told CNN affiliate KLAS he heard the commotion and saw the cab on fire from a window. “There was a loud bang and I hear two
other booms. I looked out my window at Caesars Palace ... and could see the fireball,” he told KLAS. Police are looking for the occupants of the SUV, described as a black Range Rover Sport with large black rims. Hernandez said he didn’t have information on what led to the shooting.

www.canarianweekly.com BRITAIN’S tax authority, HMRC, has published the names of nine individuals and businesses who owe more than £25,000 in tax.
The people revealed are described as “deliberate defaulters”, who had failed repeatedly to co-operate with the taxman. HMRC said those on the list had already received penalties for either errors in their tax returns, or for failing to comply with their obligations. However, it was made clear that the entries were specific to certain dates, and those named may no longer be tax defaulters. The details published included names, addresses, occupations and even the total amount of tax owed. A spokesman said: “HMRC has been given the power to publish these names to deter UK taxpayers from deliberately defaulting on their tax obligations. “It also encourages the non-compliant to

Snow snookers the top golfers! PEOPLE over 60, now eligible for “student” loans, should attend university to give themselves hope of keeping their jobs. That’s the message from David Willetts, Britain’s Higher-Education Minister, who says the age limit for loans has been done away with. Previously, only those
up to the age of 54 could seek funding for tuition fees, which are rising to £9,000-a-year in England. Mr Willetts, on tour in India with Prime Minister David Cameron, told The Daily Telegraph: “There was a lot of criticism about the ageism of all this. The regime now is that there is no age limit on fee loans.”
LEADING international golfers Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were forced off an Arizona golf course when a snowstorm engulfed them, before they had even teed off!
It halted the opening round of the World Golf Championship Match Play Championship, and caddies settled for a snowball fight in the car park of the Dove Mountain desert course, 20 miles north of
Tucson. It was the first time world No1 and top seed McIlroy had experienced a postponement because of snow. The bewildered Northern Ireland star said: “I have never seen anything like that at a tournament.
“I saw snow on the course when I was a kid, but nothing like that on any of the tours. It was crazy.” Play was suspended in late morning and, by the time play was called off for the day, more than 1½ inches of snow had settled on the course. Australia’s Jason
Day, who would be enjoying warm summer temperatures if he were home in Brisbane, also said it was a first for him. “This is crazy,” he added. “I never played golf where you had to stop because of snow.” Britain’s Ian Poulter reckons he’s seen it all now in the two months of this year alone - first with high winds in Hawaii, and now snow. “I can’t believe it,” he said. “When have we ever seen that? The two events I’ve attempted to play this year have been three days of 50mph wind, and two inches of snow in an hour. It’s absolutely, flippin’ unbelievable.”
Check out those old time villains SOME half-amillion criminal records, dating from 1770 to 1934, were published online this week.
And further two million will follow by the end of the year. The England and Wales records have been released by the genealogy website findmypast.co.uk in association with The National Archives. Among the documents are court papers, verdicts, sentences and mugshots, which can all be accessed globally by anyone for a small fee. Many of the photographs show suspects holding their hands to their chests, in case they have identifying features, such like a missing finger. Web users can go online to find out if their
Page 14
ancestors have criminal pasts Family historian Amy Sell told Sky News: “You may get their age or a description of what they looked like. “You may even get a photograph as well, which is amazing. Coming face to face with your ancestor is quite rare. “You will also know what they were convicted of, what the crime was, and also what the punishment was.” Some 2½ million documents are being scanned painstakingly by staff at The National Archives in Kew. You can trace your family history by entering names and keywords and searching the files. The documents also provide a fascinating insight into the criminal
justice system at the time, and wider social history. Records specialist Paul Carter says there are not many details about ordinary people’s lives in the 18th and 19th centuries. “What people should be looking for - as well as the murderer or the thief - is the rural poacher, or the trade unionists at a time when trade unions were illegal,” he said. “You’ll get Chartists in here and people who were trying to reform the way society worked. So you will get an awful lot of very different people who come through the system, for different reasons.” You can also look up the criminal records for more well-known names like political activist Emmeline Pankhurst and author Oscar Wilde.

Másmóvil chief’s great escape from avalanche MEINRAD (Maini) Spenger, CEO and co-founder of Spanish mobile phone operator MÁSMÓVIL, got more than he bargained for when recently he took a well-deserved break from work. It came after he had led the company into the finals of the European Business Awards, in which they were awarded the Ruban D’Honneur status in the Customer Focus Category. But Maini could have never imagined he was to be saved from a mountain slope by using a phone from his very own company! He and two friends were skiing in St Moritz, in the Swiss Alps, when a huge avalanche struck,
burying everything in its path, including the three friends. They were dragged 800 metres down the slope, suffering various injuries - and two of the friends ended up being completely buried in the snow. Maini, on the other hand, was trapped, but not completely overwhelmed, and he eventually managed to free his left arm to reach for his MÁSMÓVIL phone. And, despite being in the Alps, it had good enough coverage to enable him to call the rescue services, who arrived by helicopter some 15 minutes later. The friends were flown to the nearest hospital, where they were treated for hypothermia and numerous injuries. Maini is currently recovering back home in

Old folk can’t be bothered to think about cost of care THE thought of paying for longterm care has been completely overlooked by many pensioners in the over-75 bracket. A report by global market researchers Mintel reveals that more than one-third of these British old-timers have given the prospect “no thought whatsoever”. As serious as it may be and, probably as necessary for many, long-term care in old age is a topic most people would prefer to avoid especially when it comes to how they would pay. New research by Mintel reveals that 35% of over-75s have not even discussed the prospect with their family. And that figure is even more than those who believe their family will automatically
provide the support they need - financially or otherwise - if necessary. On the other hand, 20% of the over-75s are confident they will not need care, while the same number are concerned at how they would be able to afford it. Dropping down the age groups, around 25% of over-45s have even given any thought as to how they might pay for long-term care, while one in five has pondered the question. But it almost goes without saying that almost half of them haven’t given it any consideration at all. Toby Clark, Mintel’s Director of Research, said: “As people live longer, the proportion of older individuals will swell in number, placing even greater pressure on the UK healthcare system and Government finances. “Even though it is not a pleasant thing to think about, long-term
care is not something that should be left until the last moment to deal with. “While the topic doesn’t require considerable levels of thought if someone is still decades away from possibly needing care, people should still be encouraged to consider these costs earlier in life.” He added: “By not discussing the issue with family, people might be doing more harm than good. When an elderly person needs care, it often affects several generations within a family. “Indeed, the financial and psychological pressures being felt by the so-called ‘sandwich generation’ - people who are simultaneously supporting themselves, their elderly parents and their own children can be enormous.” As for funding future care, four in 10 Brits aged 45 and over believe
the state should help cover costs beyond a certain limit, but they agree that people should make some provision themselves. Three in 10 in this age group believe it is unfair that some people should make some provision themselves, while around the same number of over 45s feel the cost should be covered entirely by the state. Trust is an issue for a quarter of the same group, who would not rely on the state to provide acceptable care for older people. The same number of over 45s believe people need to take more responsibility for the care they may need in old age, while 15% say younger members should help care for and support their elderly relatives. Among the over-45s, three in 10 say the value of their savings and investments (other than a main home) is worth £30,000 or more. Given the high cost of
residential care in the UK, most adults would struggle to fund several years of residential long-term care based on savings alone. Toby Clark stressed: “The UK population is ageing rapidly and improvements in longevity mean people are set to spend more years in retirement, and long-term care, than ever before. “While not everyone will end up requiring residential nursing care, at some point in most people’s lives, some form of longterm care is likely to be necessary. “The costs of such care can be considerable, and the unfortunate reality is that as things stand, most individuals are ill-prepared to deal with this expense.” The top three ways that those aged 45 or so plan to cover the cost of care are: 1. Pension Income (36%) 2. State Support (36%) 3. Non-pension-related personal savings and
investments (32%) Around 31% would sell off a property, while 14% believe their family will help. Less than 4% plan to use an equity-release scheme. Some 2% plan to retire abroad, where the cost of care is significantly cheaper, while the same number say they will purchase an immediate care plan if needed. Toby concludes: “With the average annual cost of a care home without nursing care at £27,200 and rising, the potential costs of long-term care can be substantial. “While the Government does provide some level of support, full support under the current system is available only to those with few to no assets. “Therefore, unless they are very wealthy, most consumers are ill-equipped to handle the possibility of paying for several years of long-term care. Unless, of course, they are prepared to sell off assets, such as their main home.”
Police nail man for the fake Euro notes POLICE in Portugal have made a record seizure of fake euro banknotes, worth more than 380,000 euros (£331,000).
The counterfeit 200euro notes were seized in the northern city of Oporto, and a 46-yearold foreign man - not named - was arrested.
Page 16
The counterfeit notes were “of exceptional quality”, and thought to be of a type which have been in circulation for a decade. Specimens have turned up mostly in Spain, Italy, Germany, Bulgaria and Portugal. It is the second police haul of fake euros this month in Oporto, coinciding with the recent dismantling of a five-strong gang of Portuguese.
They are accused of counterfeiting and passing off 50 and 20-euro notes after an operation which. resulted in fake notes worth 30,000 euros being confiscated. Portuguese police believe the euro’s growing importance as an international currency makes it an attractive forging target for organised crime in the European Union and beyond.

Writer Jane Austin is given Royal Mail seal of approval THE 200th anniversary of Jane Austin’s Pride And Prejudice novel has been celebrated with a set of stamps, issued by the Royal Mail. Letters posted from Hampshire villages Chawton, where the writer lived, and Steventon, where she was born, will also receive a special postmark for a week. The stamps feature newly- commissioned artwork by illustrator Angela Barrett, depicting scenes from all six of her novels. A Royal Mail spokesman said: “The books contributed immeasurably to British culture over the last two centuries.” In fact, a 2007 BBC poll for World Book Day
voted Pride and Prejudice as the book most

class stamps will have illustrations from Pride And Prejudice and Sense And Sensibility, while images from Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion make up the collection. The postmarks for letters posted in Chawton and Steventon, near Basingstoke, will feature the Pride and Prejudice quote: “Do anything rather than marry without affection.” Andrew Hammond, the Royal Mail stamps spokesman said: “It is an honour for us to commemorate her work. New generations continue to fall in love with her work through television and film adaptations, and, of course, the books themselves.” Jane Austen was born in Chawton in 1775 and died, 41 years later, in Winchester.
Which? reveals the car-buyers’ main blunders NEW Which? research reveals around a third (31%) of drivers bought a car they later regretted. The top complaints in the survey found almost a third of people (30%) had purchased a faulty vehicle and over one in ten (16%) found the car they’d bought cost more to run than they expected. The survey also revealed 13% admitted they hadn’t done enough research. To avoid a car-buying regret, the Which? Car Survey is the UK’s largest survey of car reliability and owner satisfaction. Covering 47,716
individual cars, it offers a realistic picture of how rival cars compare and what their most common faults are. A Which? spokesperson said: “A car is one of the most expensive things many of us will buy so our advice is to do your homework to avoid ending up with an unreliable vehicle that could leave you out of pocket. Drivers should check out Which?’s independent survey to compare car makes and models. The basic details of any potential purchase, like MOT status, can also be verified on the DVLA website.”

Fun Dog Show for all WELL, what a day we had. No fewer than 65 dogs took part in our Fun Dog Show and, somewhat surprisingly, the whole thing ran smoothly. On one of the hottest days of the winter, we provided lots of water points for the contestants, and all were well-behaved. The categories were puppy, adult, senior, super senior, disabled and fancy dress, and the latter was hilarious, I don’t know how the judges managed to choose the winners. We thank Ian and all at Xtreme Gym, Las Chafiras, for letting us use their car park and facilities; and our sponsors: Wine Bar at the Harbour Club Los Gigantes, Tenerife Property

The judging was carried out professionally by dog-groomer Claire McIntyre and Shelley Stevens, of Star Agility. An amazing agility display was then put on, which delighted the crowds. Pictured are Archie and Dennis. Archie was the only “double” winner of the day, winning best puppy, and second-best in show overall. Archie was one of the Guaza mountain puppies, rescued with his siblings from the socalled “wild pack”. As you can see, he is an absolute beauty, and has truly fallen on his feet after being adopted by “puppy fosterer” Sarah Wilson. And little Dennis, a

Another nice touch was that several dogs “for adoption” were brought down to the show and, pleasingly, three adoptions were made. There will be a dog first-aid course, and various programmes and initiatives in the San Miguel schools. Again, thanks to everyone who came, supported, joined in. It was one of our best events ever.

ITV1, 20.20 Paddy McGuinness presents the eighth and final programme of the dating show’s fifth series, hoping to send one last batch of love matches on a dream date to the sun-soaked Isle of Fernandos. Will he be able to land any of his remaining 30 girls their dream guy from this week’s quartet of eligible bachelors? The single, sassy and often rather kooky ladies will be waiting patiently, hoping to be impressed by whoever comes down the famous love lift. The gents do all they can to dazzle the girls with an insight into their lives, quirks, passions and skills, but will this final gathering of potential suitors still be as hard to please as before? Each of Paddy’s girls controls a light, which they can switch off if they don’t like what they see, but none of the girls or boys wish to end the series dateless, so perhaps the competition will be a little fiercer as the ladies try to bag a last-minute date. Tonight’s varied bunch of bachelors includes Cardiff rugby player Tom, Leeds student Henry, morris dancer Ben from Exeter, and Liverpool security advisor Joe. As always, an optimistic Paddy casts an eye over last week’s pairings to find out how they got on during their action-packed dates, and, as it’s the series finale, it’s not long before he takes a look at this week’s dates too.

John Inverdale introduces live coverage from Twickenham as England renew their cross-Channel rivalry with France. Today’’s hosts have won five of their last six encounters against the French in the Six Nations, including a thrilling 24-22 victory in Paris last year which helped ensure Stuart Lancaster was given the head coach role on a permanent basis. Lancaster’s young side began this tournament as joint favourites with France, who bounced back from a poor Six Nations campaign last year to win their three autumn internationals. Nonetheless, the French suffered a shock defeat in their opening game this year against Italy as their brittleness was exposed. Expert analysis comes from Jeremy Guscott, Lawrence Dallaglio and Thomas Castaignede, with commentary by Eddie Butler and Brian Moore.

The Age of Rebellion. Composer Howard Goodall looks at the period when modernism in music arrived, and when the birth of recorded sound changed the way music was heard, played, and sold, forever. The death of Richard Wagner in 1883 led, not to a series of pseudo-Wagners, but to a series of developments that in many ways were in opposition to his monumental ambitions. In France the uncluttered and 'chillaxed' music of Gabriel Faure, Erik Satie and others was like a long hot lazy afternoon.

The Queen's Mother in Law Channel 4, 19:00
The late Queen Mother was one of Britain's most instantly recognisable figures. But few of us have even heard of the Queen's mother-in-law, Princess Alice. But her life story almost defies belief. A great granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Prince Philip's mother married into the Greek royal family, only to see the Greek monarchy overthrown by revolution. Fleeing into exile, she suffered a severe nervous breakdown. She was locked away in mental hospitals and subjected to experimental treatments by psychiatrists, including Sigmund Freud. The trauma had a shattering effect on Princess Alice's marriage and led to a fractured childhood for her only son, Prince Philip. Philip's mother eventually fought her way back from mental illness, and became an unlikely hero of World War II, risking her life to hide a Jewish family from the Nazis.

One in five of the inmates is serving a life or indeterminate sentence, but what makes this prison exceptional and disturbing is that the oldest among them is just 21. London gangs are dominant here, which leaves young men from other parts of the country feeling isolated and vulnerable. Many have to be segregated for their own protection.

W C C H O IC E Six Nations Rugby Scotland v Ireland BBC1, 13.30
Celtic cousins collide at Murrayfield as Scotland take on Ireland, introduced by John Inverdale. The home side are attempting to rebuild under new interim coach Scott Johnson after a disastrous 2012, which began with a whitewash in the Six Nations and ended with a humiliating home defeat by Tonga. Scotland’s minimum target before this tournament was two wins, which would be as many as they have managed in the previous three Six Nations campaigns combined. A victory today would be no mean feat, with Ireland having won five of their six most recent Six Nations trips to Edinburgh and able to call on fit-again talisman Brian O’Driscoll.
Ottolenghi's Mediterranean Feast Channel 4, 19:00

Yotam's journey starts in Morocco's most vibrant city, Marrakech, where he discovers the secrets of the tagine, explores the delicious street food infused with the flavour of preserved lemons, and eats out in the city's largest communal dining area - Jemaa El Fna square. Yotam creates a succession of stunning recipes from the rooftop kitchen of his beautiful riad.
A great British air disaster Channel 4, 20.00
At the height of World War II, a secret committee of visionary British scientists set about designing a revolutionary new aircraft that would launch a new era in aviation. This is the story of the rise and fall of the De Havilland Comet - the world’s first passenger jet airliner. Key first-hand accounts, expert interviews, reconstructions and never before seen archive tell the story of how British ingenuity created a plane that flew faster and higher than any of its rivals, giving post-war Britain a symbol of hope in a time of austerity, and how triumph ultimately turned into fatal disaster. When it came into service in May 1952, the Comet was a huge and instant hit with passengers. The revolutionary jet, with its graceful, streamlined fuselage and four powerful jet engines, changed the way people travelled as new routes were introduced around the world. But then, a series of accidents began to plague the Comet, culminating in two seemingly inexplicable and tragic disasters. In the space of just four months in early 1954, two Comet aircraft blew up in mid-air, killing all the passengers and crew. The catastrophic loss of these aircraft was as sudden as it was mysterious. Nearly 100 people had died and the whole future of passenger jet aviation hung in the balance. With public and political pressure to uncover the cause, and on the direct order of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, a British team of leading aviation experts was assembled to discover what went wrong. In the midst of the wreckage a fledgling industry - air crash investigation - emerged. Led by aviation engineer, Arnold Hall, the team spent months conducting innovative, dangerous and painstaking experiments. As part of this unprecedented process of solving the mystery, they wrote the rule book of modern air crash investigation, with many of their pioneering techniques still being used today. A Great British Air Disaster is a cautionary tale about the great rewards, and correspondingly high risks, of pioneering scientific endeavor. This pivotal moment in British manufacturing history offers a unique glimpse of an era when Britain ruled the skies.

Panorama - Mission Accomplished? Secrets Of Helmand BBC1, 20.30
Child abuse, child soldiers, ill-equipped and drug-addicted policemen, spectacular corruption and a booming kidnap and ransom trade: is this our legacy in Helmand? All across Afghanistan, British and American troops are handing over control to the local security forces. The plan is to end allied combat operations this year and to withdraw by the end of next year. The UK and US governments say this transition is working well and that the Afghan forces are almost ready to take over. But is that really the case? Panorama reporter Ben Anderson spent five weeks in Sangin, the town where 109 British troops lost their lives, and discovered some shocking truths about the handover of Helmand. Ben was given remarkable access with the US Marines, as they struggled to advise the drug-riddled Afghan security forces. He finds police bases with their own marijuana gardens and policemen who are so high on heroin that they can hardly stand up. The marines say other police officers supplement their incomes by kidnapping innocent civilians, or by selling their rifles and ammunition in the local bazaar. Ben also discovers that many of the police commanders have ‘chai boys’ – personal servants who are often abused as sex slaves. During his time in Sangin, four of these boys are shot by the police as they try to escape. Three of the children are killed and the fourth is badly injured. But despite the best efforts of the marines, the Afghan police won’t free the remaining chai boys.

My New Hand BBC1, 22.35 On Boxing Day night 2012 surgeons at Leeds Infirmary carried out Britain’s first hand transplant. This film, made over two years, follows the story from the moment Professor Simon Kay and his team decided to go ahead to the moment the patient was able to move the transplanted hand. During that time candidates came forward from all over the UK and beyond, including a hairdresser, an IT consultant, a former pub landlord, a DJ and a retired housewife – all of whom had lost the use of at least one of their hands. But before they could go ahead the doctors had to be sure they were physically and psychologically prepared. Some decided that the risks – including the potentially life-shortening drugs that would need to be taken for the rest of their life – weren’t worthwhile. Others decided that the misery of living without a hand outweighed everything else. This thought provoking film is with them as they make their decisions – and with the surgeons as the patient who comes through the process is finally taken into the operating theatre

Confirmed for BBC Two on 26 February at 10.00pm to 10.30pm Brand new sitcom, Heading Out, penned by comedienne and presenter, Sue Perkins, follows head vet, Sara (Sue Perkins) as she copes with the challenge of coming out to her parents after many years of lies. About to reach the milestone age of 40, Sara’s life is not how she imagined it would be. Whether it’s making urgent funeral arrangements for a client’s dead cat, lying about her personal life to placate her anxious mother or getting into trouble with a netball referee, Sara’s life is reaching tipping point and something’s got to give. Aware that she is in dire need of sorting herself out, her eccentric group of friends, including the ever-positive Justine (Nicola Walker), re-enactment fan, Daniel (Steve Oram) and super-clean Jamie (Dominic Coleman) arrange a surprise birthday party intended to turn her life around. Things are starting to look up when Sara meets the stunning Eve (Shelley Conn), inviting her to Sara’s own ‘surprise’ party. However, much to Sara’s dismay, her so-called friends have bought her the unique gift of life coaching sessions with larger than life expert, Toria (Joanna Scanlan) who gives her a dramatic ultimatum that may make Eve run a mile. Sara is played by Sue Perkins, Daniel by Steve Oram, Justine by Nicola Walter, Jamie by Dominic Coleman, Toria by Joanna Scanlan, Eve by Shelley Conn and Brian by Mark Heap.

Lightfields ITV1, 21.00 Following on from the hugely successful Marchlands, his brand new fivepart supernatural drama series spans three time periods at a remote farm on the Suffolk coast. The story follows three families who live at Lightfields farmhouse at different times – 1944, 1975 and 2012 – and who are linked by the ghost of a teenage girl who died in mysterious and tragic circumstances. The drama opens in wartime Britain, where the Felwood family are hard at work on the farm. 19-year-old Eve (Dakota Blue Richards) arrives from London and develops a friendship with Lucy Felwood (Antonia Clarke), but their relationship is put in jeopardy when Lucy’s head is turned by dashing US airman Dwight (Neil Jackson). In the scorching summer of 1975, Vivien (Lucy Cohu) arrives at Lightfields with her teenage daughter Clare (Karla Crome). Estranged from her husband, Vivien does not initially understand why she has been drawn to the farmhouse, but supernatural events force her to confront the childhood trauma that is at the root of her troubled mind. In 2012, a new generation of Felwoods buy Lightfields. Barry (Danny Webb) and Lorna (Sophie Thompson) are trying to set up the farmhouse as a B&B while raising their 8-year-old grandson Luke. But when Barry’s father Pip moves in to live with them, his presence serves to disturb the restless spirit in the house which seems intent on unravelling and unlocking the past.
From Romania With Love ITV1, 22.35 Harrowing news reports of thousands of Romanian children, abandoned and dumped in orphanages, shocked the world in the early 1990s, prompting hundreds of British families to adopt them and offer the children new lives in the UK. Twenty years on, three of them feel ready to try to trace the parents who gave them away. 22-year-old Nicci (pictured) from Bournemouth has never met her birth mother and has no idea where she is living. Using the clues in her adoption paperwork, she returns to Romania for the first time in the hope of tracing her remaining relatives, especially a brother who was left behind in the orphanage when she was brought to the UK. Cezarina from Birmingham was one of the oldest children brought to Britain. She was ten when she left the orphanage and can remember the harsh conditions she had to endure. Although she has tried to put the past behind her, a message on her Facebook page leads her to a contact in America who may know the whereabouts of her mother. 23-year-old Will is at Oxford University. He actually has an address for his mother and decides to write to her for the first time, before travelling to Bucharest for an emotional reunion that he hopes will have a positive outcome.

Celebrity Juice ITV2, 22.00 The irrepressible Keith Lemon returns with the ultimate guilty viewing pleasure in the ninth series of the outrageous comedy panel show, kicking off in style by celebrating the show’s 100th episode. It has risen from small and humble beginnings to top the ratings among the digital channels, with a regular audience of over 2.5 million viewers. The show’s popularity shows little sign of waning, with big-name celebrities lining up to appear alongside Keith, Holly Willoughby and Fearne Cotton, in the full knowledge that they are likely to be humiliated or made to do something slightly unsavoury! Keith’s catchphrases have become common parlance, with cries of ‘potato!’ and ‘sha-ting!’ often heard in bars and student unions throughout the land. Fearne is taking a maternity break for this series but is replaced by the beautiful actress and model Kelly Brook, who will no doubt elicit some kind of over-the-top, inappropriate, or amorous reaction from the West Yorkshire wild man, having already appeared in Keith Lemon: The Film with him previously. Joining Keith, Holly and Kelly for the first episode and helping them celebrate the hundredth episode is UN ambassador and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, as well as other guests still to be confirmed at the time of going to press. No one but Keith Lemon could get away with such an anarchic and irreverent mixture of laugh-out-loud silliness and too-rude-for-words naughtiness.
Matt Allwright looks into the work of fraud investigators determined to catch those who steal from the public purse, and meets the genuine claimants who deserve government help. Working as a financial analyst at a London hospital, Lance Sewell had access to taxpayers' money on a daily basis. And as investigators for the NHS soon discovered, he was doing a very good job... at siphoning it off into his friends' bank accounts. And when David Buck's career is cut short, he has big dreams to help him avoid life on benefits. But can Government grants and a disability charity really give him a flying start to a new future?

Part-Time Britain. In spite of the present tough economic climate, something unusual has been happening in the job market. Unemployment has been falling in recent months, and the number of people in work has risen to its highest level since records began. ITV News business editor Laura Kuenssberg examines why, in this age of austerity, jobs are still being created. The answer may lie in a shift in the way people work, with a growing number taking on part-time jobs either through choice or necessity.

Every picture must tell a story By Sue McDonald THERE is a saying that a picture speaks a thousand words, and this is particularly true regarding selling or renting out property.
With so much competition in both markets, you are probably going to work with an agent, or through the internet. This being the case, how are they going to present your property to potential clients? The agent will put your pictures in his window display, use press adverts and sales books. He will, of course, need some good photos to do this. If you are using the internet, the visual presentation of your property will dictate success or failure. Therefore, it stands to reason that you will need some impressive photos to have a better chance of finding good clients. With a vast amount of property available, you need to make sure that photos do, in fact, speak a thousand words - and they had better be good ones! If the pictures exhibited are of poor quality, or show a property that is tired and not exceptional, you reduce the chances of anyone following it up immediately. Human nature means that our eye is easily
Page 38
caught by things that are attractive and handsome. If your photos display your property well and are vibrant and exciting, potential clients will want to see and know more. And if you are trying to sell, make sure your property is clean, tidy and not too cluttered as this distracts from the property itself. If you are seeking to rent your house or apartment, you also need to present it to its best advantage, as there is a lot of property available out there at the moment. Your photos should make the property look clean, tidy and comfortable, and that it has all the inventory potential renters would need. Take an example where there are various properties available in the same complex. What will make your property stand out rather than any of the others? You may have only one or two photos to convince the clients that your property is the one they want to rent or buy, rather than any of the others. A bit of “house doctoring” could be all you need to increase your chances of success. If you are selling, particularly, you may feel that you don’t want to invest more money in the property. But perhaps you need to speculate to accumulate? A small sum of money invested at this stage could be the difference between selling or renting your property, or not.
You know the strengths of your own property: if you can get the people to view, you have the chance to promote it. But if you never get anyone to view, you cannot reach that second, important step. We need not be talking about a great deal of money here, either. For example, if you are selling, you probably don’t want to buy a new sofa. But if the old one isn’t one of the highlights of your property, you can cover it with a brightlycoloured throw, a couple of cushions and, perhaps, a colour coordinated picture. This will make the whole room look really fresh and renewed for those all-important photos. In the bedroom, a similar principle applies. A light-coloured bedspread, some cushions in rich, deep hues, and a modern, bright picture will give the room a complete facelift. So take a step back and try to view the property you are trying to sell or rent as an outsider would. Then try to emphasise its strengths and minimise its weaker points. A minimakeover could be all you need to achieve a successful sale or rental. All items mentioned are available at Deco Nuevo at Parque Margarita in Los Cristianos. Estimates are free and without obligation, and we are happy to help you with design and decorating services, also free.
DIY enthusiasts urged to stay safe SPRING traditionally marks the beginning of DIY season - and keen gardeners will also be out in force, so RoSPA is urging people to stay safe, inside and out.
It is estimated that each year, more than 200,000 people go to A&E in the UK after being injured during DIY, maintenance or gardening at home. RoSPA urges those doing DIY to remember to tidy up straight after a job is done - children find tools and gadgets fascinating, and many injuries occur when a task is complete, but
not tidied away. Sheila Merrill, RoSPA’s public safety adviser, said: “Over-ambition and lack of knowledge are among the main causes of DIY accidents, and we advise people to be honest about their abilities. Accidents happen more easily when you are unprepared and in a rush, so think through the tasks you intend to do before you start work. “Tackling a job that is too difficult could not only result in an injury, but could also mean you have to pay a tradesperson to rectify an unsuccessful attempt - turning your efforts to save money into an expensive and perhaps painful mistake.”
Other DIY and gardening safety tips include: stop and disconnect all electrical appliances and tools before repairing/ cleaning them; only use tools/materials/ products in accordance with their instructions; when working with power tools, use an RCD (residual current device) if your home is not already wired with one; avoid falls from height by checking a ladder’s condition before use; keep children and pets away from where you are working; keep products in their original containers; keep all tools, paint and chemicals out of the reach of children; and, tidy up at the end of your task.
DIY disaster THE total cost of Britain’s botched DIY jobs comes to £2.1 billion a year, with almost a quarter of people seeing their home improvement plans go wrong.
This is according to a survey conducted by myhammer.co.uk that revealed 42 per cent of individuals regretted not calling in a professional to do a job they took on themselves. John Russell, building expert on Channel 5’s reality show Cowboy
Builders commented: “The consequences of getting DIY wrong can be catastrophic. What may seem an achievable task can end up costing
hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds to put right.” He highlighted some of the worst mistakes he had encountered, including a man who tried to pull down a chimney stack by tying it to his car and driving off. Mr Russell explained that while this may seem an extreme example, it demonstrates how people are often convinced they are doing the right thing, when in reality this may be far from the case. Recently, a survey conducted by Wickes revealed that nearly half of DIYers are forced to call in a tradesman to finish the job, at an average cost of nearly £250.

By David Hudgell OUR climate is hot and dry, due to the proximity of the equator, it’s also worse during the summer months. But some plants still thrive in this climate, which is good as the sun is so hot and strong during this time it’s very difficult to do any gardening. Now is a brilliant time to decide what you’d like to plant where. Silver heat-reflectors Aromatic silver-leafed plants, and those with pungent foliage, produce an oily film on their leaves that acts as a sunscreen while minimising
Garden
PLANNING TO BEAT THE HEAT
water loss. Many are Mediterranean natives and most develop deep root systems that penetrate yards into the ground allowing them to reach water reserves. These root systems may take two or three seasons to develop. Most flower in summer and their sugar-rich nectar pleases the bees. However, these plants do most of their growing during the winter. Silver and grey leaves dominate this Mediterranean group because this colour absorbs less heat. Some silvery plants have finely divided leaves (like dianthus) and others develop a woolly surface like certain stachys. So if a plant has silver
leaves that are either woolly or aromatic it will usually thrive in full sun. Lavender, rosemary, santolina, thyme, cistus, sage, phlomis, most achilleas and artemisia are good examples. Water-storage plants Other plants store water either in their leaves and stems, or in underground tubers, bulbs or rhizomes. Succulents, house leeks (sempervivums) and sedums shrug off drought and never flag, thanks to their plump foliage. Ornamental summerflowering alliums love a hot spot too. Other plants develop long tap roots as a water-seeking device. Verbascums,
many poppies, acanthus, lupins, hollyhocks and lots of umbellifers rely on tapping into moisture underground. Native plants from hot spots throughout the world can also survive dry conditions once established. Mexican dahlias, salvias, penstemons and gaura from the inner states of North America have evolved to survive drought. Fluffy pennisetums and fine-leaved stipas, both highly ornamental grasses, also thrive. Should I water? If you have to plant, soak the pots in water for several hours first, then water the hole well before planting. Aim to
create a leafy canopy whenever possible, with little soil visible between your plants. This will prevent water loss. Water thoroughly in the morning or the evening if needed, but don’t apply miserable amounts. Soak any distressed plants thoroughly or leave them to send down deeper roots. Gravel gardens A gravel garden is a good idea for sunnier climates, apply the gravel layer to bare soil in weed-free areas: you don’t necessarily need a thick, weed-barrier membrane. Gravel can be reapplied every two years in early spring as
it does tend to discolour. When planting, scrape away the gravel and dig the soil into a bucket. Put the plant in the hole and push the gravel back. Gravel works in two ways: in winter it filters rain, which allows sunlovers to overwinter more successfully and in summer it acts as a moisture - conserving mulch. Gravel is an ideal background for bright flowers, but paler whites and yellows can look insipid. One downside is that self-seeding plants (such as eryngiums and some geraniums) can become a problem because gravel is perfect for seedlings.
Garden jobs this week... There are signs that spring is definitely approaching, with flowers appearing and birds and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. There’s plenty to do indoors this month, all in preparation for the season ahead. Outdoors, the garden is coming to life again, and its time to prune shrubs. Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some vegetables under cover
Chit potato tubers Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and peaches Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds off Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering Prune Wisteria Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate overgrown deciduous hedges Prune climbers Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter

gnomes back in fashion

There’s a possible new series in the poly tunnel. The BBC are to begin filming in the spring a programme for kitchen gardeners; it will show the evolution of eight allotments, where seasonal crops will be grown. The challenge will be to grow and use the produce. Further details as to presenter, challenges are still a little sketchy at present.
In previous years the Chelsea Flower show has imposed a ban on those loveable, likeable or even loathsome garden ornaments – gnomes. This year as part of the centenary celebrations the ban is lifted and the Royal Horticultural Society is inviting celebrities to paint and decorate gnomes to feature at the world famous gardening event, before auctioning the gnomes online with the proceeds going to the RHS campaign for school gardening.
Gardening will now be taught in schools from September 2014. Pupils from Key Stages 1–3 will be taught ‘to cultivate plants for practical purposes’ as a key activity in design and technology lessons. More than 16,300 schools in the UK are signed up to the RHS Campaign for School Gardening, which gives teachers access to really useful resources such as lesson plans and tips for planning and setting up a school garden.

All about hair sense
By Carl from Robot
I WAS listening to one of my clients talking about the use of shampoos and conditioners, and was surprised to hear about her lack of knowledge on the type of hair she had. I then started quizzing some other of my clients and found that most didn’t know what type of hair they had when it came to choosing products. In fact, there are only four basic types of hair: normal, dry, greasy and damaged. These can be
Page 40
mixed but, in general, hair types fall into these categories. If your hair is NORMAL, then you will have no colour in it, and it shouldn’t be too long (I will explain later). Also, you should be able to leave it a few days without shampooing. These are the trade marks of normal hair. If your hair lacks body and frequently needs shampooing, and you also don’t have colour, then your hair may be greasy. This is noted by the lankness of your locks and the flatness of it. Dry hair is normally associated with colours, or the use of heated appliances, although older, longer hair is usually treated the same,
even if it has no colour because of the age. Damaged hair is the hardest to treat, and it needs constant moisturiser and nourishment. It is noted by its brittle feel and sometimes frizzy appearance, and this isn’t going to be put right with a supermarket shampoo! Your hair is as unique as you are, and it needs some thought put into what type it is, and how to treat it. For instance, a “coloured hair shampoo” doesn’t know if it’s treating black-tinted hair or blonde, yet both need totally different care. So many of you use “normal” shampoo because you don’t know which one to choose and maybe just grab the first one you see. Yet your shampoo is the most important thing you will use on your hair as it the building block: it cleanses and repairs your hair from the inside out, leaving it ready for the next phase - your conditioner, which should always match your shampoo. Never use different brands together. I don’t like selling a shampoo knowing that it’s going to be used with another brand of conditioner because it just doesn’t work the same. Finally, if you’re totally stuck, then sit and explain to your stylists what you are using. I am sure they will guide you in the right direction.
Baby relief for mums through smoking ban
THE smoking ban in public places has provided a boost for mums because it has led to a drop in the number of premature babies. It is well known that smoking during pregnancy can stunt the growth of unborn babies. But until now, little was known about the impact of smoking bans on premature birth rates. Now, though, a new study shows a consistent reduction in the risk of premature birth in relation to the smoking ban, which really is an excellent spin-off. Researchers from Belgium’s Hasselt University, led by Dr Tim Nawrot, analysed 606,877 babies delivered at 24-44 weeks from 2002 to 2011. Pre-term birth was defined as birth before 37 weeks. In Belgium, smokefree legislation was implemented in three phases: firstly in public places and workplaces in 2006, then in restaurants in January 2007 and, finally, in bars serving food in January 2010. The study discovered reductions in the risk of pre-term birth after the introduction of each phase. No decreasing trend was evident in the years or months
before the bans. Results showed a 3.13% reduced risk of a pre-term birth on 1st January 2007 and a further 2.65% drop after 1st January 2010. Inhaling second-hand smoke can lead to preterm delivery at less than 37 weeks, while other factors, such as mother’s age and socioeconomic status - or even factors such as air pollution - explain the reduction. “Our study shows a consistent pattern of risk reduction with successive population interventions to restrict smoking,” said the researchers, in their British Medical Journal report. “It supports the notion that smoking bans have public health benefits, even from early life. And more and more countries in Europe are adopting stricter legislation on smoking in public places.” The report added: “These results underscore the public health benefit of smoking ban policies.” Patrick O’Brien, spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), said: “Smoking during pregnancy has been shown to have adverse effects on fetal development, but this
research also highlights the possible risks associated with secondhand smoke. “This is a large study and provides important information for women, their families and healthcare providers when considering a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy. “These findings reinforce the continued need for increased public policy, and education on the adverse effects of smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke, especially during pregnancy. “The smoking ban in enclosed public and work places in 2007 in the UK was a positive step, and the RCOG supports these initiatives.’ A British study, published last month, found that the introduction of smoking bans led to swift and dramatic falls in the number of children admitted to hospital suffering asthma attacks. And research published in 2009 also found the ban on smoking in public places in England led to a swift and significant drop in the number of heart attacks, saving the NHS £8.4 million in the first year alone.

By Val Sainsbury MEN may be increasing their risk of prostate cancer if they enjoy a fryup - or any deepfried food - more than once a week. Junk food such as chips, fried chicken and battered fish may play a significant role in bringing about aggressive and lifethreatening forms of the disease. Although previous studies have suggested poor diet can affect a man’s chances of getting prostate cancer, a new survey points to deep-fried, convenience foods in particular, being a big danger. Results published in the The Prostate journal confirm these findings, with fried-food addicts 30% more at risk than those who claimed to

tuck into them less than once a month. Nearly 40,000 UK cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year, and 10,000 men die from it - the equivalent of more than one an hour. The risks increase with age, and men over 50 are more likely to develop a tumour, and there is a strong, genetic element to it. As with some other types of cancer, diet is thought to be a key factor in the development of the disease. Last year, for example, a study found a diet rich in oily fish could cut a man’s chances of dying from prostate cancer by up to 40%, possibly because fish oil contains anti-cancer properties which slow the growth of malignant cells.
22nd February - 28th February 2013
Previous studies have shown that eating foods cooked at an extremely high heat, such as grilled meats, could raise the
risk of a tumour. Large quantities of foods, such as fried chicken, have also been linked with aggressive and lifethreatening forms of cancer But given the level of consumption of deepfried take-aways in the UK, the latest findings suggest that these are a much bigger threat to male health. The market for fastfoods and takeaways
in the UK is thought to be worth over £9bn annually, and is growing at an average of 5% a year. Experts at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in Seattle analysed data from two studies involving a total of 1,549 men diagnosed with prostate cancer, and another 1,492 men of similar age and profile who were in good health.
All the participants, aged 35-74, completed detailed questionnaires on their eating habits. The researchers then made allowances for other factors which could influence their chances of getting prostate cancer, such as their weight, age, whether they had a family history of the disease. They were then able to calculate the extent to which eating chips, chicken or doughnuts at least once a week affected cancer risk. “This is the first study to look at the association between intake of deepfried foods and risk of prostate cancer,” said Dr Janet Stanford, who led the research. “The link appeared to be limited to the highest level of consumption defined in our study as more than once a week. “This suggests that regular consumption of deep-fried foods confers a particular risk for developing prostate cancer.” But Cancer Research UK says it is too early to say for certain if there is a link between deepfried foods and prostate cancer. Oliver Childs, senior science communication officer, said: “It’s clear that a healthy diet high in fruit, vegetables and fibre, and low in red meat and salt, is better for overall health than one packed full of greasy fast-food. “But from this study alone, we can’t be certain if there’s a link between fried food and prostate cancer.” Dr Iain Frame, director of research at Prostate Cancer UK said: “Although this study indicates a small association between eating deep-fried food regularly and increased prostate cancer risk, the results relied on asking men to recall how often they had eaten these foods in the previous three to five years.”

Food and Drink I JUMPED at the chance to write this review because this Los Cristianos restaurant is, undoubtedly, one of the best-kept secrets of south Tenerife. As you enter La Cava’s traditional, rustic-style restaurant, complete with darkwood ceiling beams, you can’t fail to miss the warm and comfortable atmosphere. We were greeted by our friendly waitress, Ronny, who showed us to our table and gave us the menus. Of course, we started with the wine. The list was extensive, but we went with the Red Marques de Caceres 2008 Crianza, as recommended by Ronny. It was smooth

and silky to drink, and went on to complement the food perfectly. The menu is a French/ Czech variation, with
classics such as Country Pate & Meatloaf, and specialities including “Svikova” & Brandy flambéed Chicken fillets. For starters, we opted for the Creamed Spinach Gratin and the Stuffed Vol Au Vents and, as we were waiting, we tried not to fill ourselves on the warm bread, with homemade garlic herb butter. The Creamed Spinach
was, just as promised, smooth and tasty, finished with a mild grilledcheese topping. The vol au vent comprised of tender chicken and mushroom pieces in a creamy sauce, encased in a crunchy puff-pastry vol au vent t o make a delightful contrast. Then we were on to the mains and, after much deliberation, we decided on the Prawns Bourguignon and Fillet

Steak in a Béarnaise sauce. Now, I say Prawns, but these were monsters, all cleaned so there was none of that faffingabout de-shelling. And
they were sautéed perfectly in a parsley, garlic-and-chilli butter (we will definitely be keeping those Vampires away). We asked for mediumrare fillet steak, and it was cooked just right to melt in the mouth. And the sauce was made with shallots, butter and just a hint of tarragon. This came with crunchy, whole, asparagus spears, and both dishes included a sideportion of blended, buttery, mashed potatoes. Other side options such as potatoes and vegetables were also available. We finished our delicious meal with a classic chocolate mousse for dessert: light and fluffy, not too sweet and topped with cream. Unfortunately, we were so full that we shared one portion, and the ladies on the next table also recommended the ice-cream cake highly - with or without the whisky! Now, here’s the thing. This little gem is open in the winter months only, so make sure you get yourself down there. The restaurant is situated up the steps from Los Cristianos harbour car park and next to the Jesus excursion shop. To make a reservation first on 922 790 493. See advert on page 7.

www.canarianweekly.com THE annual Which? supermarket survey has revealed Waitrose comes out on top, with Tesco at the foot of the table. In a Which? survey, Waitrose was awarded a customer score of 82% which included five-star ratings for its customer service and the quality of its fresh produce. Tesco was rated the worst of the nine major supermarkets, getting a customer score of 45% with poor marks for its pricing, store environment, quality of fresh produce and customer service. In comparison, Tesco’s online service was rated more favourably (63%). More than 11,000 Which? members rated the supermarkets with customer scores based on customer satisfaction and the likelihood they would recommend it to a friend. Discount supermarkets Aldi (74%) and Lidl (69%) came second and third, respectively, beating some of the bigger supermarkets such as Morrisons (59%), Sainsbury’s (58%) and Asda (53%). Aldi and Lidl were the only supermarkets to get four-star ratings for their pricing, with 97% of Which? members saying they both offer good value. The survey also revealed the biggest irritation (37%) when shopping in supermarkets is not being able to compare prices because of different unit measurements. Members said they wanted supermarkets to keep special offers simple, with 55% preferring straight

discounts ahead of other offers such as petrol vouchers (16%) or buy-one-get-one-free deals (11%). Richard Lloyd, Which? executive director, said: “Which? research shows that rising food prices are one of consumers’ top financial worries, so in these tough economic times it’s understandable that supermarkets scoring well for value for money are being ranked so highly in our league table. “But our survey also found that consumers think supermarkets are not doing enough to

help shoppers on tight budgets, with only one in five Which? members saying they trust
retailers to charge a fair price for food. “We want supermarkets to make a firm
commitment to treat their customers fairly by scrapping misleading price promotions and
introducing clear, consistent unit pricing so busy shoppers can spot the real bargains.”

A pension fund? We’d rather go on holiday
Go on holiday and get messy THOMAS COOK have put together a brilliant list of destinations to go on holiday where you can get messy, as it’s all part of the cultural experience. Songkran – throughout Thailand If you’re lucky enough to be in Thailand between April 13th and 15th, get ready for the world’s biggest water fight. The celebration marks the beginning of the Thai New Year, where cleansing with water is meant to purify and renew. In Bangkok or Chang Mai, the water fights can last up to six days, as Thais and tourists ambush each other in the streets with hoses and water balloons. Songkran is also a time when the people to pay their respects to the New Year and visit family and monks. Tomatina – Bunol, Spain Well documented here in Tenerife, every last Wednesday in August, the town of Buñol is splattered with thousands of crushed tomatoes in the world’s biggest food fight. Many people wear goggles during this hour of frenzied fun, as the town becomes a red river of bedlam. You could stay in nearby Valencia and enjoy some down time after all that tomato throwing. Why not go it’s just a short flight from here. Holi, throughout India Holi, the Festival of Colors, is a Hindu celebration full of joy and one of India’s most important holidays. During the day of the
Page 44
last full moon of the lunar month, usually late March, the air is full of bright colored powder. The festival is celebrated differently throughout the country and mainly with bonfires and music, and the cheerful spirit is common throughout Hindu communities around the world. Visit Goa and enjoy beautiful beaches, traditional villages and a lied back atmosphere. Batalla del Vino – Haro, Spain June 29th is a good day to visit Haro, Spain. Bring a bottle of vino and prepare to be drenched in red wine in the heart of Spain’s grape-growing region. Mass crowds flock to the hills for the battle, where white shirts are stained bright purple by the end of the morning. The festival is the highlight of the year in this region of Spain. Queen’s Day – Amsterdam Although their Queen’s birthday is really during the winter, she celebrates it on April 30th, Holland’s official “Queen’s Day” since 1949. Orange is the national colour, and the streets become a sea of fluorescent wigs, feather boas, and body paint, as crowds gather in the plazas and on boats in the canals. Amsterdam is the center of this outdoor party, with many live music acts, but nearly every town is alive with orange on this day. More information is available from www. thomascook.com
GIVEN the choice, holidays would come before retirement funds for more than half of Britain’s workforce
A survey from banking group HSBC revealed that 58% of them would rather pay for a holiday than stick money into a pension fund if they could afford to save for only one of these options during the year. It is a higher percentage than that recorded in the other countries
surveyed in the company’s latest The Future of Retirement report. In fact, only 38% of UK workers are putting money aside regularly for their old age, according to the HSBC study, based on data from more than 15,000 people in 15 countries. Out of those countries, only Egypt had fewer retirement savers than Britain with 29%. Taiwan and India, with 67% and 62% respectively, featured the highest proportion of savers. The bank’s report spotlighted data from
the United Nations, showing that the number of over-60s will match the under-15 age bracket by 2050, with pensioners making up around 20% of people living on earth. Simon Williams, group head of HSBC’s wealth management, said: “People are living longer, through tougher economic times. But expectations about their standard of living in retirement remain unchanged. “As a result, millions of people around the world are facing years of hardship after their savings run out.”
Nearly half of workers covered in HSBC’s survey have never saved towards their retirement. But the British Government is trying to address the shortfall in pension savings with an “autoenrolment” scheme to persuade more people to join a workplace pension. Countries surveyed in HSBC’s report, which is published regularly, were Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, the UK and the US.
Trains are causing the strain IT is marketed as one of the more relaxed and cheaper ways to travel, leaving the car at home, especially when travelling to a city such as the UK’s capital – London. However, consumer champion Which? claims that many ticket machines are not working and as a result creating strain for travellers. An investigation by Which? reveals passengers are losing out by using train ticket machines which fail to offer all of the cheaper fares, off-peak tickets and discounts available at manned ticket offices. In a snapshot investigation Which? used ticket machines at 11 London mainline sta-
tions to find out what tickets were available and whether they clearly displayed validity information. Key findings from the investigation include: All of the machines they tested either didn’t sell tickets on the day before travel or restricted the time when you could buy. This is not only an inconvenience for passengers but could be denying them the chance to get the best deals. Buying a ticket to start a trip at a different station was only possible from one of the 11 machines tested. This could leave some season ticket or Oyster holders paying twice for
part of their journey Unhelpful ‘information’ buttons and onscreen menus were confusing meaning consumers couldn’t easily compare fares or understand the terms and conditions of the ticket, therefore risking them facing fines from ticket inspectors. The Which? survey also reveals that using a ticket machine is the least popular way of buying a ticket, with just 15% of passengers preferring to use them. Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: “Ticket office hours are being cut often leaving people with little choice but to use a machine.
We are calling on the train companies to update their machines and make it crystal clear how, when and where tickets can be used. It seems unfair that machines don’t offer exactly the same tickets as manned offices.” Which? will be sharing its findings with each of the relevant train companies, trade body Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) as well as the Department for Transport (DfT). Unless action is taken by the industry to improve ticket machines for passengers, they believe the DfT and the Office of Rail Regulation should take a closer look at this issue.

By Jav MAZDA soon won a following for their saloon car, curiously-named 6, when they introduced it in 2002.
And that wasn’t surprising because it was a stylish, fun-to-drive alternative to the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Vectra Machines favoured for conpany reps. Now, the Japanese carmakers are hoping to recapture that appeal with a new version of the 6. Just 20% cars in this family saloon sector are bought by private customers and the rest are bagged by fleet buyers. However company’s aim is to persuade current and former Mazda 6 drivers and owners to boost this figure to more than 30% according to UK managing director Jeremy Thomson. They hope to sell 7,500 6s this year, and of these, two-thirds will be saloons and the rest estates. The Mazda 6 is
Motoring
MAZDA OFFER THAT 6 APPEAL
traditionally one of the better-looking cars in its class, and this latest model is no exception. And that it is absolutely stunning to look at in both saloon and estate forms won’t harm its chances one jot! The car is five inches longer than before and is one of the largest in its class, the extra length being used to give the car a long, sweeping bonnet and swooping curves above the front and rear wheel arches. Those extra inches
also mean plenty of boot space and rearseat legroom, even if the sweeping roofline in the saloon means rear headroom is a wee bit tight for anyone over six feet. Externally, the 6 gets LED running lights up front and a chrome line that flows between the headlights and below the grille. Of the four engines on offer, the biggest seller will almost certainly be the 150bhp 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, followed
by a 175bhp version of the same engine. There are also two 2.0-litre petrol engines, pumping out 145bhp and 165bhp. The engine capacities sound large by today’s downsizing standards, with many large family cars offering 1.6-litre units. But the Mazda powerplants are no less efficient. The 150bhp turbo-diesel boasts 67.3mpg and should be cheaper to run than many rivals. That efficiency isn’t limited to one engine
in the range. Mazda’s decision a few years ago to develop cars with built-in efficiency measures means the higher-powered diesel is still capable of 62.8mpg and the petrols impress with up to 51.4mpg. Performance isn’t compromised by the efficiency target, either, because the car’s weight has been kept down to levels normally found in the class below. The 150bhp diesel can hit 0-60mph in nine seconds, and has a top speed of 131mph, almost identical to the 165bhp petrol. But the 175bhp 2.2 diesel is head and shoulders above the others, with 0-60mph coming up in 7.9secs and a top speed of 139mph. One of the Mazda 6 strengths is the fun-todrive element, and the new car has retained this. The steering is particularly good, with high levels of feedback from the front tyres being transmitted to the driver, and it is altogether a comfortable ride.
By comparison, rivals tend to be set up for either a fun drive or a comfortable ride, but the 6 trumps them all by treading a perfect line between the two. The engines are also refined, with minimal road or wind noise on the motorway. The only downside is the interior, which, despite claims of better quality materials, still feels like a throwback to the old days. But don’t ever doubt the build quality because it really is top class. Equipment levels are excellent, with all trim levels, including air-conditioning, alloy wheels, a large colour touchscreen, cruise control, Bluetooth and USB connection. The Mazda 6 is traditionally one of the better looking cars in its class and the latest model is no exception because, overall, it is a well-rounded package. But at prices ranging from £19,595-£27,445, this machine really does have that 6 appeal!
Here’s another Chinese cracker! THE chances are that you will not have heard of Qoros, the latest Chinese car manufacturer. But you will – and soon enough! They take their carmaking seriously in China and, within a few years, this range could be a genuine threat to leading European brands. The company’s campaign begins in earnest at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, when they unveil their new 3 saloon, which will be available in Europe next year. Qoros chief Stefano Villanti, who has a string of high-flying company titles to his name, says they are expecting to produce 150,000 cars within two years, with a factory capable of expanding to 450,000 units if nec-
essary. Former MINI designer Gert Hildebrand is the brains behind the 3 Saloon, which is lower, wider and has a larger wheelbase than its rivals, including the Ford Focus and VW Golf. Hildebrand, who realises just how important his creation is, predicts: “The 3’s going to be the longest-living car in the company, and the one all others will be judged from.” He adds boldly: “We’re not here to impress - we’re here to last!” Underneath sits an all-new modular architecture, allowing for the platform to be lengthened, shortened or raised as needed. Euro NCAP has been a previous problem for many Chinese carmakers, but Villanti
22nd February - 28th February 2013
insists the 3 will “pass the tests with no problem. In fact, with many, it will positively shine.” Despite its European intentions, over 50% of Qoros models will be
sold in China, so there’s no diesel model in the pipeline. A four-strong petrol line-up, ranging from a 1.2-litre three cylinder, to a turbo-charged
1.4-litre four-, will be supplemented by a new hybrid instead. The latter will use an electric rear axle, originally developed by American Axle and
Saab automobile in Sweden, in conjunction with the three-cylinder petrol engine. It will produce over 220bhp and 450Nm of torque, while keeping emissions under 120g/ km. Qoros will also debut its Cross Hybrid Concept at Geneva, and for this, the drivetrain is combined with a 60mm raised ride height and a soft-roader style hatchback body. It comes complete with a coupe-like roofline, chunky plastic wheel arches and a redesigned front and rear - and it’s the most exciting machine of the trio. Equally important, though, is the Estate Concept, which offers 500 litres of luggage space with the seats in place, and 1,400-litres folded.

Scotland sneak another win By Roscoe THE Oasis Fm Pool League again came up just short in their annual challenge with the Scotland Select squad.
The Palms Bar in Torviscas hosted the weekend-long tournament, which was played in high spirits. The Tenerife lads start-
ed well on day one and, for a long spell, it looked as though they would win the opening rubber. But Scotland fought back and were good value for their opening-day 34-28 frame win. This meant Tenerife had to win on day two to force a tie-break and again, they took an early lead. 9-6 became 12-10 before Scotland rallied. They won five frames in a row and were buzzing at 17-14. However, the home team were not done. They reeled of five straight frames and the contest became a seesaw battle. The visitors knew a draw was good
enough to retain their trophy and, even though the Tenerife lads gave it their all, they ceded 32-30. One frame the
difference in reality. It was a fantastic contest, played in the right spirit. Graham, from Phoenix Potters, was voted
Tenerife player of the tournament, while Chris Sheehan was Scotland’s best stick. For the first time the
two sides clashed in a pre-pool golf event. The Ryder Cup format was lots of fun and finished in an honourable draw on Amarilla Golf. The organisers would like to thank George Fagan and all the Scotland lads for their considerable help. Thanks also to Palms Bar, Direct Telecom, Oasis Fm, Arona Foods, Canarian Weekly, Terrace Bar, Tenerife Pool Tables, Fritzel, Fat Nick, Andy Williams, Amarilla Golf Course, Tenerife Golf Shop and everyone who turned up to make the event the success it was.
Hammers throw it wide open “IT’S not how you start, it's how you finish.” The old sporting chestnut is relevant in Division One, where Gaffers A are showing signs of wobbling. They have just a onepoint lead at the top after suffering a kicking by nearest rivals Tenerife Hammers A. The 9-3 scoreline flattered Gaffers, who were then given a fright by Hammers C on Tuesday
before sneaking home 7-5. Hammers A, cheered on by EastEnders’ actor Perry Fenwick, who plays Billy Mitchell, made it 12 wins on the trot as they beat Dreamers. They have not lost since meeting Phoenix Knights in October - and they face them again this Tuesday! The Knights warmed up with a smooth suc-
cess at Peacocks, while Phoenix Potters saw off Palms A 7-5. Terrace A returned to winning ways at home to Inn The Pink B, and La Caña doubled their wins for the season as they accounted for Terrace B 7-5. Exiles B are flying in
Division Two at the moment. They are in the last eight of the Cup and on Tuesday, they obliterated Bar 13 11-1. Blair Bear’s boys are up to seventh and will be eyeing promotion if this continues. Exiles A are still in touch at the top

The kids are all right! Cartagena 3 CD Tenerife B 3 Zamora 1 CD Tenerife 1 CD Marino 2 Real Oviedo 1
IT has been quite a few days for football on our glorious Island and, for once CD Tenerife, can take a back seat. Well the first team can, because the B team have pulled off another major cup shock! They are through to the last four of the RFEF Cup, which is the Spanish version of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. This is a competition for sides outside the top two tiers and Tenerife decided to enter the kids instead of the first team. They have done re-
markably well, but nobody gave them a chance of seeing off Cartagena, who are a genuine big fish. They are top of Group 4 in Segunda B (the same level in which Tenerife’s first team compete), and boast the second-highest wage bill. They have lost just once since mid-December, and have former CDT midfielder Marcos pulling the strings. They also played a fullstrength side against Tenerife youngsters and were knocked out on their own turf! After a goal-less first leg, the Tenerife kids were doing brilliant to be level at 1-1 at halftime. Away goals count, but reality hit home after the restart as Cartagena bagged two quick goals. So, 3-1 down with 35 minutes to go, the kids were as good as out. The bookies had them at a massive 8-1 to go
through. But these lads are tough. They dusted themselves down and, with goals by Ayose, and inspired by Brit Jordan McCourt, they hauled themselves level and held on for a famous
win! Hopefully, the semi-final will be played at the Heliodoro, and a large crowd will roar them on. They deserve it. Meanwhile, CD Marino fans are still smiling after the best win
Oveido to unleash hell in the second half. Hector got a swift goal back but, even though the ref seemed keen to level the match up, Marino held firm. A dodgy penalty was somehow kept out after the mother of all scrambles, and the final minutes seemed like hours. The whistle brought promotion-style celebrations and, if nothing else, they will have this memory from a wretched season. In comparison, CD Tenerife had a tame draw in Zamora. It was a poor contest which neither side really tried to win. Yeray notched his first-ever senior goal seconds after coming on early in the second half, only for Garcia to equalise 17 minutes from time. CDT are still six points clear and should get another home win this weekend as Real Madrid’s C team visit Santa Cruz.
in their team’s history. They have had a rotten season, but that was forgotten as they dispatched the mighty Real Oviedo. A Balduino brace gave them a two-goal, halftime cushion only, for
Team Handicap showdowns! By Geoff Huxtable WITH no league matches tonight (Friday), you might be wondering what to do with yourself! Why not treat yourself and watch one of the John Lowe Team Handicap semi-finals? This ever popular competition always provides thrills and spills and last dart drama! An absolute corker of a tie came out of the hat on Monday. which sees newly-crowned Division One champions Palms Sports Bar A facing Premier league winners
Xtreme Sports Bar at the gym in Las Chafiras. Just 60 points separate the sides and guarantees a real thriller. The banter between the two sets of players started immediately after the draw. The other semi-final has Division 2 titlechasing Emerald Lounge entertaining local rivals Bar 180 A. Will the massive 210-point handicap be too much for the Premier team? It’s a tough call, but one thing is for sure: Richard and his

lads will have to bring their A game. In the plate (or the losers’ cup as we know it!) an even bigger margin of 230 points awaits Premier League outfit The Pub, who travel to last season’s winners, Gaffers B. This is a repeat of last season’s final and is sure provide a night of
keenly-contested cup action with a few scoops for good measure. The other tie sees Chipeque Pool Bar travel to Cozy Warriors in Silencio. And, having recently gained promotion from Division 2, Chipeque will be full of confidence. However, the Warriors have recently added
