Embassy end worry over a missing man A PLYMOUTH man suffering from schizophrenia, who went missing in Tenerife last week following his one-way flight to the island, has been found, to the immense relief of his family.

Caine Beattie, aged 21, disappeared soon after arriving here. But by now, though, his family should have flown here to take him home. Caine, from Pennycross, went missing when he discovered that he might have to return to the secure Glenbourne Unit hospital,

Thief’s fun-flight over Continued from front Thankfully, the infant was found unharmed, soon after disappearing nearly two weeks ago, to the delight of his frantic parents. They had just landed for a holiday and had left their baby in the back seat because it was raining, while they helped the cabbie unload their luggage. The thief, who was actually arrested in Las Americas on Wednesday, dumped the taxi in a car park close by, with the baby still strapped in. Later, that same Sunday evening, the thief returned and helped himself to a cash register from the airport’s coffee shop. But the thief, who has since been identified, was still at large on Tuesday,

after committing four more crimes at the airport. He added to his crime list when he was found sleeping at the airport in an Air Europa baggage-handling vehicle. He then proceeded to steal the van, fleeing down the runway and surrounding roads. The man, who still hasn’t been named, ended up crashing it into a baggagetransit area, and then made off with another vehicle, destroying part of the perimeter fence while getting away. His escape took place at 4.30am, the airport being closed, with few Guardia Civil officers on duty. Curiously, the man returned the vehicle later that afternoon, leaving it

in the public-parking lot before disappearing again. The big question remains: How on earth could he defy the safety procedures, time and again in a Spanish airport, especially as it is on Level 4 terror alert, which is the second-highest security level? Sources, aware of the airport’s daily events, put it down to the small number of Guardia Civil officers on duty, and a lack of security throughout the perimeter. It is pleasing that the police have arrested the man at last. But after his recent escapades, perhaps the airport’s security forces will be stepped up, if only to avoid further embarrassment for AENA, which manages all Spanish airports!

because he had failed to take his medication. He went AWOL for more than four days and left his family fearing the worst. But his brother, Marley Sandercock, who spoke with Caine over the phone two days after he disappeared, learned that he was stranded in Tenerife, having lost his passport and all his money. Caine had actually contacted the British Embassy in Santa Cruz, and the family received a call, inviting them to fly here to take him home. Caine’s mum, Melissa Beattie, said: “The consulate are being really helpful. We’re trying to get flights out there at the moment.

“Marley is having to renew his passport in Newport and then we’re driving him back to Cardiff for the flight, and my sister’s going too. “I’m absolutely relieved. But I’m still devastated about it; one minute I’m happy, the next I’m sad.” She added: “I’ve spoken with him, and it was a relief to hear his voice. Marley’s so proud that we’ve found him, but no one has slept.” Mrs Beattie recalled the moment she found out the news for which the family had been waiting. “A man from the Embassy was on the phone telling me there was no news, and, at that moment, Caine walked through his door.”

A five-grand sigh of relief A RELIEVED 22-year-old, who lost an envelope containing 5,450 euros, had a fellow Santa Cruz resident to thank for finding it.

The man, aged 37, couldn’t believe his eyes on Monday when he saw the envelope in a street, complete with cash, and handed it into the Local Police station.

The owner said the money came from selling a car. But, after completing the paperwork in the Gestoria, the envelope somehow disappeared. The police posted a message on Twitter, which he spotted on Wednesday in an online newspaper. He recovered his cash promptly, and was able to thank his Good Samaritan by phone at the police station.

Bashed by bike A WOMAN’S legs were injured when she was knocked down by a motorcyclist in Las Americas in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday).

Emergency services were notified at 1am that the 24-year-old needed medical assistance, and paramedics responded quickly, transferring her to a hospital.

KING Felipe VI met British Prime Minister Theresa, May at 10 Downing Street last Thursday to discuss bilateral relations in the middle of his threeday state visit to the UK.

Mrs May welcomed the King of Spain at her official residence, and praised her guest’s address to parliament a day earlier. Prior to the meeting, however, Downing Street stressed that the sovereignty of Gibraltar, the disputed overseas territory, was not up for debate. The reminder came a day after Felipe encouraged dialogue between Madrid and London to find an acceptable solution to the ongoing dispute. On the Wednesday’s joint session of parliament, he said: “I am certain that this resolve to overcome our differences will be even greater in the case of Gibraltar. “I am confident that, through the necessary dialogue and effort, our two governments will be able to work toward arrangements that are acceptable to all involved.” But a government spokesperson said that while Britain and Spain enjoyed a strong relationship, Gibraltar was an issue, “on which we do not see eye to eye”. He added: “Our position is clear: the sovereignty of Gibraltar is not up for discussion.” Following the meeting, a Downing Street

Spanish King’s Gibraltar offer doesn’t sit well spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister welcomed the King’s warm speech in Parliament, in which he reiterated the friendship between our two countries, and she agreed that the UK and Spain really did enjoy an incredibly-strong relationship.” She added: “The Prime Minister highlighted the scale of Spanish investment in the UK as a sign of the depth of our commercial ties. “They agreed on the importance of standing up for free trade, and also highlighted the significance of our close co-operation on security and counterterrorism.” And Mrs May said: “I’m delighted to welcome further Spanish investment into the UK today, as we remain Spain’s No.1 destination in Europe for direct foreign investment.” On the Brexit subject, the Prime Minister said: “We will seek a new, deep and special partnership with the whole EU as we leave, and we are committed to ensuring we strengthen the bilateral ties

Five-star cops nab runaways

TENERIFE’S National Police have designated units to hunt, locate and arrest fugitives with outstanding European Arrest Warrants. And these units are paying off hansomely, because, over the last three months, the cops have arrested five such people on the run. They are: *A 38-year-old German woman, found in the Santa Cruz area of Acorán, who was convicted in her own country of 116 fraud cases. *A 68-year-old Italian, who

was arrested in El Fraile, charged in his country with armed robbery. *A German man, 40, convicted for fraud, was hunted down in Puerto de La Cruz. *A 57-year-old Hungarian man, charged with drugtrafficking and armed robbery, was captured in Las Galletas the same month. *A Latvian man, aged 38, living in La Camella, was also caught, with a misappropriation charge hanging over him.

between our two countries.” She added: “We have made it a priority in the negotiations to guarantee the status of Spanish and other EU citizens living in the UK, as part of a reciprocal deal that also provides the same certainty for UK citizens living in Spain and other EU countries.” There are currently more than 300,000 Britons living in Spain, and around 130,000 Spaniards living in the UK. On the Wednesday evening, Queen Elizabeth honoured Felipe and his queen with a banquet at Buckingham Palace. It was the first state visit by a Spanish monarch since 1986, and the royal couple were made especially welcome. International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, ahead of the UK-Spain Business Forum the following day, said: “I’m delighted to welcome further Spanish investment into the UK today, as we remain Spain’s No.1 destination in Europe for direct foreign investment.” Downing Street noted that, on the same day, Spanish manufacturer CAF announced plans to build

“I am confident that, through the necessary dialogue and effort, our two governments will be able to work toward arrangements that are acceptable to all involved.” King Felipe VI trains and trams at a new factory in South Wales, where it will invest £30m and create 300 jobs. Meanwhile, Spanish airport operator AENA is participating in expansion work at Luton airport, where it has a majority stake. And Spanish steel producer Gonvarri Steel Services, part of the Gestamp Group, is building a £26m factory on an Oldbury Steel & Alloy Processing site. Also on the Thursday, the King and Queen Letizia visited Westminster Abbey for a traditional tribute before the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. The guests of honour also stopped at the tomb of Eleanor of Castile, a daughter of King Ferdinand III, of Castile, who married

the future Edward I of England in 1254. Then, while the Spanish royal couple returned home on Friday, Felipe’s father, King Juan Carlos, enjoyed a trip to Wimbledon to watch fellow-Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza in the Women’s Final, from the Royal Box. The 79-year-old, who abdicated as King of Spain in 2014, sat alongside the Duke of Kent and the Duchess of Gloucester. His timing was immaculate because Muguruza completed a sensational straightsets victory against fivetime Wimbledon winner and favourite Venus Williams. The 23-year-old Spanish woman polished her off 6-0 in the second set, in one of the tournament’s great shocks.

Dolphinarium is illegal, declares Supreme Court

THE dolphinarium at Gran Canaria’s Palmitos Park theme park, has been ruled illegal, by the Canary Islands’ Supreme Court of Justice. The Court’s Administrative Chamber has annulled the legalisation project for the dolphinarium, which is based inside the protected area of the Pilancones Nature Park, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. This project was approved by the regional government’s Department of Public Works, three years after the attraction opened, in March 2013. But the judicial resolution, which is not yet final, can be appealed in the Supreme Court. According to the judgement, construction works for the dolphinarium were started before the forest fires, which ravaged Gran Canaria in the summer of 2007, also destroying part of the theme park. Three days before the fire,

Palmitos Park promoter Aspro Parks, which also operates the nearby Aqualand water park, approached the local Town Council to request a territorial qualification that would allow them to undertake works. In fact, the work had already begun. Both the Town Hall and the Gran Canaria Cabildo reported back unfavourably. The Cabildo pointed out that the Canary Islands Commission for Territorial Planning and the Environment (Cotmac) clarified in 2000 that the instrument required to authorise any extension of the complex, exceeding 20% of existing facilities, would be what is

known as a Special Plan. However, during the development’s processing, the promoter began and finished building the dolphinarium. The judgement considers that the Administration infringed the rules when granting authorisation “in several essential aspects”. The Canary Islands High Court (TSJC) pointed out that the PAT (a so-called Territorial Action Project) as an instrument of law, was conceived for actions of an exceptional character and public or social interest. However, this specific motivation does not appear in the decree, subsequently

granting authorisation, examined by the court: “It simply qualifies it as an improvement to the complementary tourist, offering an improvement of the economy, and for employment, without taking into account that it is the legalisation of an activity already being carried out.” Magistrates highlighted the fact that the PAT was “an undetermined, juridicial concept, that cannot protect discretionary actions”, and that such projects must realise the public interest that it pursues. Basically, since 2000, there has been a clear framework that must be followed for such major projects, particularly when enlarging a facility of this type within a protected area. When Palmitos Park applied for permission, it did not receive favourable reports for the project, but had, in fact, already started to build the dolphinarium. In the aftermath of the 2007 fire, which caused material damage to the Park, it seems the project went ahead

anyway, to open in 2010. From that point, it appears that the Palmitos Park administration may have worked to gain a retrospective permission from the Town Hall and the regional government, which seems to have been granted in 2013. But this current ruling overturns that granting of permission, as being formally incorrect. The TSJC added that the decree approved by the regional government contradicts municipal planning, which referred to a Special Plan for the plot in the protected, rustic zone. However, the promoters simply processed it as a small-scale PAT, avoiding the process required by law to consider it of great importance. In fact, the January 2013 agreement of the Cotmac approved excluding the procedure from environmental evaluation “without motivation”, which violates the legal forecast, required to be incorporated for a PAT of great importance.

Summer University is South ‘backbone’ ADEJE last Friday celebrated the official inauguration of its 25th Summer University, a joint initiative of its Council and the University of La Laguna (ULL).

And, given the anniversary, said Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, it was a “historic moment” in the borough’s history. “Today, we recognise that the Adeje Summer University has been one of the backbones of what is the South of the island today,” he said. The Mayor said he was delighted that the university had continued, right through the years of economic crisis, and was still as much in demand as ever. He added that the summer university had the capacity to adapt and meet the changing needs, “thanks to those in whom we have placed our trust: the rectors and vice-rectors, who have recognised the need to open up the university portals to today’s society, and bring classes outside the traditional campus”. ULL Rector Antonio Martinón also marked the 25th anniversary and the ULL’s 225th year, underlined by the strong commitment to academic activities beyond the walls of the university. The Mayor and Rector

also paid tribute to the University rectors and vicerectors during the summer university years. “The presence of six rectors reflects the fact that this achievement is not simply the work of one person, but something that is profound, that demands continuity and institutional commitment,” said the Rector. In his inaugural address, Carlos Vogeler, Executive Director for memberrelations of the World Tourism Organisation, told the audience that tourism was now the third-highest contributor in world exports. “On average today, more than 1,200 million people travel internationally every year, with an expectation that the number will rise to

“Adeje is today a symbol of innovation and development, and an excellent tourism reference point globally.” 1,800m in coming years,” he said. “Tourism creates one in every 11 jobs worldwide.” He congratulated the Council and University on their respective anniversaries, and welcomed this year’s course themes of culture, health, sports, the economy, and, of course, tourism. “Adeje is today a symbol of innovation and development, and an excellent tourism reference point globally,” he said. Vogeler added that the tourism industry was able to respond well to

shifts in the international economy, and could offer the creation and development of employment, within a sustainable model. He also said it was important that the reaction to terrorist attacks, designed to shut down borders (attacks on beaches, airports, hotels) was that they must not achieve their aim. In fact, he stressed, the industry shows no signs of slowing down. “It is becoming a tool for inclusion, offering opportunities to improve the living conditions for many people working in

the industry, allowing them avenues out of poverty.” He added: “In times of volatility, the tourism industry is showing its enormous capacity for resistance. One of the challenges is to maintain the balance between competitive and responsible tourism, so that tourism develops in an ordered and sustainable manner, in economic, social and environmental terms.” Sustainable tourism was, he said, no longer a choice but an obligation, and he would like to see the promotion of a platform for safe travel, developing ways of risk management and reduction. “We are living in a changing world, with a more demanding tourist … a tourist better prepared, looking for experiences. “We cannot sit back in our comfort zone and hope they come to us, without leading the movement for change to new directions. “New technology offers us the change to enrich the experience of the client, who has increasing access to better and more information.” Another big challenge is the ethical question for public and private businesses. True, the World Tourism Organisation has a worldwide code of ethics. But what is also needed, said Vogeler, is an international treaty, which will actually be presented at the next UNWTO assembly in China in September.

Old criminal nabbed in Arona, following horrific Swiss spree AN Italian criminal, involved in a 1997 murder, and still with a reputation of being extremely violent at 73, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Arona. Officers, collaborating with the Swiss Federal Police, found him living in a motorhome he shared with his partner. He was wanted in Switzerland after committing a horrifying kidnap in Zurich, threatening the manager of a jewellery store.

He forced his address out of him with a gun, then accompanied the terrified man to his home, where he taped and blindfolded

his wife and daughter. As if that weren’t enough, he drugged them both and committed a sexual assault on the youngster.

And, as a safeguard, he placed rucksacks on the back of all three, saying they contained explosives, and that he would detonate them unless they did as they were told. He then returned with the trio to the jewellers, where the manager was forced to hand over a large collection of jewellery. Finally, the pensioner took the family to a local train station and released them, removing the rucksacks. Once local police were alerted, they checked CCTV in the area and identified the thief, who was involved in a murder 20 years ago, as well as being known for

several violent thefts. It was believed that he had fled to Spain, and the Guardia Civil and police forces were circulated with information about the villain, who was thought to have been living in a camper-van. In fact, Guardia agents discovered that he had actually based himself in Tenerife, in a motor-home. After arresting him, officers searched the vehicle and uncovered a gun with ammunition, and a significant haul of jewellery, some stolen in Switzerland and other pieces probably collected from a suspected robbery.

Airport sizzler is a record in Spain SPAIN’S highest-ever temperature, 46.9ºC, was registered, officially, last Thursday by an official weather station at Andalusia’s Córdoba Airport. And 10 regional areas, chiefly in the south or west of the country, also beat their previous records the same day. Teruel, in the north-eastern region of Aragón, recorded 40.2ºC (104.4ºF), while Spanish capital Madrid chalked up a new high of 40.3ºC (104.54ºF). The other eight record measurements, in Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura, were all over 42ºC (107.6ºF). In Andalusia, Jaén smashed through its previous high by 2.8ºC, and Granada airport did so by 2.7ºC. And in nine cases, the previous hottest temperatures in each region were recorded in the mid-Nineties, with Granada beating its hottest

temperature, set in 2001. Meanwhile, the extreme heat led to tragedy when a 54-year old worker died of heat-stroke. He was laying asphalt on a road in the Seville town of Morón de la Frontera. During last month’s initial summer sizzler, two people died of heatstroke: a 76-year-old man in Badajoz (Extremadura) and a cyclist, aged 66, near Barcelona (Catalonia).

Payback time as sad aide leaves his mark LEWIS Williams spent the last four years working as personal assistant to Ms Linda Moore, Executive President of the DANCO engineering firm, in Newark, New Jersey, but he was never really happy. Among his tasks was to take her phone calls, set her schedule and bring her a cup of coffee every day when she arrived, which depressed him further. Then, after a dispute with his boss one morning, Lewis admitted in front of a dozen colleagues that he had ejaculated in her coffee “hundreds of times”. According to Brian Little, who witnessed the entire scene, Williams showed no remorse as he confessed to what he’d done. He recalled: “He almost looked proud when he told her, ‘I’ve been eating your s*** for four years. But all this time, you’ve been drinking my c**!’ He then smiled and explained everything.” The angry employee said he’d been putting “extra cream” in Ms Moore’s coffee, five days a week, over the years.

His colleagues called the police after his confession, and Williams was arrested on the site. A total of 910 criminal charges has been filed against him, including 860 charges of sexual assault. And, if found guilty on all charges, he could face imprisonment for 1,070 years! Newark Police Chief Barry Connell said the accused confessed more than 800 crimes, making him the most prolific sexual offender in American history. Williams’ motivation for pulling such a stroke remains cloudy, but there was certainly some animosity between him and his boss. Some of his colleagues have told reporters he was deeply misogynistic, and that he found it humiliating to take orders from a woman all day. Other employees, however, suggested that Ms Moore was often “aggressive, dominating and verbally abusive” with the accused, and that he might have acted in a form of “selfdefence”.

The forgotten racing circuit

WHAT seemed to be Tenerife Cabildo’s star project, a race track for Formula 2 cars, and those in various other categories, is now completely abandoned, as the picture shows. It’s a bare plot of land with nothing built on it. Yet, almost a year ago, the Cabildo’s Sports Minister said: “This isn’t only a

construction site; this is a dream that will soon be a reality.” In your dreams! Years ago, there was much tub-thumping as the private investment was estimated at more than 38,800,00 euros from the Onda Rossa company, who produced full details of their plans. They included a new road, to be built from the airport to the circuit, to make things much easier for cars being flown in, and a completion period of 21 months. Yet the only thing that’s

happened in the past year is the plot being cleared. In fact, this particular Tenerife race circuit, scheduled for Atoga, has been an ongoing nightmare, even though we were informed that some farmers had already sold up to make way for the track. For the last 50 years, the possibility of a Tenerife race track has frustrated and ignited motoring fans, who can’t possibly think it will be built now. But perhaps the Cabildo knows something they don’t!

Flights to Mallorca facing a booze ban BOOZE will soon be banned on flights and in airports in the Balearic Islands, but only if the authorities there can persuade Spain and the European Union to come to their rescue. Those who rule the party resorts of Ibiza and Mallorca’s Magaluf are battling like mad to beat the “anti-social tourism”, which lists booze, drugs, and more booze on its schedule. Their pleas follow the recent, much-publicised reports of drunken brawls, or alcohol-fuelled sexual frolics, on flights to the Balearics, which attract millions of visitors every year. Pilar Carbonell, tourism chief for the regional government there, said authorities were asking for these measures be taken “to guarantee security, and tackle anti-social tourism”. The statement did not say whether the local authorities were asking for alcohol to be banned on all EU flights, or simply those going to the Balearics. It simply read: “The aim of the measure is to improve passenger security, and also that of security forces in planes and airports in our islands, who are often faced with drunk passengers.” The Balearic Islands are known, mainly, as Menorca, Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera. And Mallorca and Ibiza, especially, have long been magnets for young visitors looking for sun and fun on a cheap budget. Some of the resorts, though, have now reinvented

Facebook Viagra not on

A LANZAROTE man, aged 39, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil for selling boxes of Viagra on Facebook for 15 euros each, without a formal medical prescription. The investigation began on 12th July when the Guardia officers became aware of an individual’s Facebook profile called “Viagra”. He was using it to sell the medication for treating erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension, by posting photos of the product and his contact details. Once the officers located him, it was plain that he did not have the necesssary prescriptions, and he was arrested for crimes against public health.

themselves as notorious examples of tourism’s dark underbelly, with drink-anddrug binges which have, from time to time, proved deadly. The “balconing” craze, for instance, in which people jump from a hotel or apartment balcony into a pool, or between balconies, is endemic in the islands. The jumpers, fuelled by alcohol, drugs or both, sometimes miss the pool, finishing up in hospital with serious injuries - or even dead! A study, carried out by doctors at the Son Espases hospital in Mallorcan capital Palma, show that most of those who end up in the trauma centre because of “balconing” are British, followed by Germans.

But some tourists, anxious to get the party started before even getting off the plane, cause severe disruption to the pilots and staff. In May, Spain’s Guardia Civil officers had to board a Ryanair flight in Palma to drag away three drunken men, who had brawled all the way from Manchester, according to the Manchester Evening News. The newspaper even published a video of the Guardia agents marching on to the plane, to applause from the rest of the passengers. But some flights have even had to be diverted because of rowdy passengers, and the Balearics is the latest in a long string of European places attempting, desper-

ately, to crack down on rowdy tourists. In Croatia’s party island of Hvar, newly-elected Mayor Rikardo Novak is implementing penalties of up to 700 euros for what he describes as “anti-social” activities, including eating and drinking in public, and strolling the streets in swimwear. Novak told the local media last month: “They are vomiting in town, urinating on every corner, walking without T-shirts, and crawling around, almost unconscious.” He added: “Young tourists are welcome, but they will have to learn how to behave here.” If only that could be said for Mallorca and Ibiza, in particular.

FIREMEN from the Santa Cruz oil refinery, along with Tenerife Consortium Firefighters, took just an hour to douse a blaze, which broke out close to the area on Monday night. The fire happened at the TF-4 exit Southbound (TF1) on the hillside, and flames could be seen from several points of the city. Local Police diverted traffic through the Manuel Hermoso Rojas and Tres de Mayo avenues. The Firefighters Consortium said the blaze began in dry bushes and palm trees, but it did not pass Level 1, which is the lowest phase.

MIGUEL Blesa, former chairman of failed savings bank Caja Madrid, was found dead on Tuesday morning at a country estate in southern Spain’s Córdoba province.

Police sources said he arrived at the property, named Puerto del Toro, on Wednesday, intending to spend several days there. Over breakfast with friends, he told them he was going out to move his car before going out hunting. Initial reports indicate that he was found dead with a bullet wound to his chest from a hunting rifle. Suicide was suspected, although unconfirmed. He was one of 65 defendants found guilty in March of misusing millions of euros from bank lender Caja Madrid, through the use of tax-free credit cards in the so-called “tarjetas black” scandal. The 65 people involved in the case spent a collective 12.5m euros between 2003 and 2012 on tax-free personal expenses. They ranged from holidays and jewellery, to meals in expensive restaurants, all paid for with credit cards, granted to them, unofficially, by Caja Madrid savingsbank chiefs, then later by Bankia, the entity created from the merger of seven,

Ex-bank chief is found dead struggling, regional lenders. The case’s top convictions were for Blesa, who was sentenced to six years in prison, and for his successor, Rodrigo Rato, a former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief, who was also Deputy Prime Minister of Spain between 2003 and 2004. The latter was handed a 4½year prison sentence. Both men appealed. Yet Blesa had not seemed depressed or downcast in recent days, according to statements made to the Europa Press news agency, by sources who knew him personally. But at times, he did seem concerned over the legal battle he had been caught up in for several years. Yet he had “high hopes that the Supreme Court would rule in his favour in the black credit-card case”, following his appeal against the six-year prison sentence, handed down by Spain’s High Court, the Audiencia Nacional. One of the toughest moments for Blesa, public image-wise, was when a prosecutor described the

“In the toughest moments he never looked downcast, and, curiously, this was not the worst moment he was going through.” beneficiaries of these credit cards as “predators”. The former Caja Madrid chief was reportedly hurt by this description. “In the toughest moments he never looked downcast, and, curiously, this was not the worst moment he was going through,” said the same sources. “In

fact, it was the quietest.” Anti-corruption prosecutors had initially called for Blesa and Rato to pay a civil bond to avoid jail. For Blesa, that figure was between 75,000 and 100,000 euros. However, Spain’s High Court chose not to impose the bond until the appeal was resolved.

But Blesa had already seen the inside of a jail, if only for 15 days. That was in June 2013, when a judge sent him to Madrid’s Sato del Real penitentiary over his role in the acquisition of Florida’s City National Bank by Caja Madrid, on 7th November 2008. Blesa, who approved the purchase for over $1.12bn, was charged with overpaying by more than 50%, and bypassing regional laws which required permission from the Madrid Government for transactions worth more than 5% of the lender’s capital. The Bank of Spain had also expressed misgivings about the Florida bank’s solvency. Failed savings bank Caja Madrid, once Spain’s fourthlargest lender, had more than seven million customers, and annual earnings of over two billion euros, during the real-estate boom. But over a period of 20 years or so, the flagship savings bank became a refuge for dozens of politicians, who were granted a seat on its board as a reward for their loyalty, or internal power.

No halting sewage!

THE Canaries has a major problem concerning the control of raw sewage being pumped into the sea, because the authorities appear to have no idea how to halt it!

More than 500 dumping points were located throughout the Canary Islands in 2007. But, a decade on, waste-water treatment plants still don’t seem to be on the agenda of regional governments. And even water full of faeces, being pumped straight into the sea holds no problems for politicians. A perfect example was provided at Candelaria on Tuesday. Raw sewage, being pumped into the sea directly, was visible along the municipality’s coast-line, close to the promenade. But people were swimming there without the slightest knowledge of this nearby dumping-point.

It’s best foot forward, for Madrid magicians THE latest fashion craze in Spain is wearing colourful sneakers, costing 50 euros. And the more they sell, the happier are the four young entrepreneurs who designed them. The footwear can be seen in universities, in upmarket areas of large cities, and even at Spain’s mostcrowded concerts. The canvas-and-leather shoes, known as Pompeii, have striking, pastel colours, and are now a signature brand in a market driven by young people, drawn increasingly to the concept of “smart-casual” attire. Behind their astonishing success are four 25-yearolds from Madrid, who have been pals since their highschool days. And, during their time at university, they contemplated the idea of setting up a business. They entered the fashion world from slightly unconventional backgrounds: three of the youngsters pur-

sued degrees in business administration (with one doubling in law) and the fourth studied industrial engineering. For them, the pastel colours and leather laces are the key, identifying features of their lightweight casuals. “We were looking to make a shoe that you could wear every day, to work and to the grocery store, but one that could still give you personality through its design,” says Jaime Garrastazu, one of the founding partners. “We saw that leather laces made them into a smarter shoe, depending on the design and the colour of the

sole. It gives them a sense of fun.” Daniel García, an expert in men’s fashion, said: “It’s the latest evolution in canvas shoes. Many influences come together in this product: classic tennis shoes (like Superga, for example), skater shoes (Vans), and summer sneakers (Victoria). “The leather laces also make them similar to boat shoes, and all these influences are drawn upon and combined well.” The Pompeii catalogue is made up of small variations: canvas or leather exteriors, with or without laces, plus espadrille or rubber soles, all of which

rest on the same theme. “Their success lies in having come up with a series of designs that reinvent the sneaker,” said Arturo Gil, the fashion-and-beauty expert with The Adonis Lab website. And their clients are ecstatic with the mix: “They’re comfortable, they stand out, even if you’re dressing casually, and, on top of that, it’s a Spanish brand,” said José María, a 22-year-old architecture student. Another key to Pompeii’s success, perhaps, is that these shoes will not break the bank. One pair costs 50 euros, and shoes from the summer collection, which

abandons the laces, cost just 35 euros. But how does one make sneakers anyway? That was the first question the four “inventors” pondered. Garrastazu admitted: “We began by looking through Yellow Pages and searching Google to find out: we didn’t know anything.” Eventually, they got in contact with manufacturers from Elche, a traditional shoe-making town in Spain. But, said Garrastazu: “At first, people hung up on us. “We didn’t have a clear idea of what we wanted. But we learned, and we managed to set some meetings there until someone, finally, showed some confidence in us.” The business was set up with an initial 18,000-euro investment, and now, remarkably, boasts 17 employees. To date, 100,000 shoes have been sold, 10% out of them outside Spain. And that’s just for starters, say the four Madrid magicians. And if you haven’t yet come across their Pompeii sneakers in Tenerife, you shouldn’t have to walk far to find them!

Ryanair boss O’Leary warns about EU veto MICHAEL O’Leary, boss of budget airline Ryanair, has told the European Parliament that there will be no flights between the UK and the EU for months after Brexit … unless replacements for EU airline agreements are struck.

He warned that Heathrow would be deserted, with summer holidays cancelled and Ryanair aircraft moved to Europe. The current Open Skies agreement allows EU airlines, including those registered in the UK, to operate in each other’s countries. But, because aviation cannot fall back on World Trade Organisation rules, sealing a new deal is seen as vital by the head of Europe’s largest airline. But O’Leary said such a deal was “an impossibility”, and that the “only sensible option” was for the British Government to ignore the Brexit referendum result. He told the European Parliament’s Transport

and Tourism Committee in Brussels: “There is a real prospect, and we need to deal with this, that there are going to be no flights between the UK and Europe for a period of weeks … months, beyond March 2019. “There is not going to be an interim agreement; there is not going to be a legal basis. We will be cancelling flights! We will be cancelling people’s holidays

for the summer of 2019.” In fact, March 2019 is Britain’s deadline to exit the EU. But if a Brexit deal is not finalised in time, Britain will leave without an agreement, known as a Hard Brexit. The European Commission, which is handling the Brexit negotiations on behalf of the EU, has refused to discuss anything until a settlement on citizens’ rights and the Brexit bill is reached. The

second round of talks will be held in Brussels next week. O’Leary argued that a clear legal framework would be needed by September 2018. At the same session, Willie Walsh, CEO of International Airlines Group, said the EU and UK should sign comprehensive airtransport agreements. “With policy support, it ought to be relatively straightforward to agree a deal on aviation that will be

ready when the UK leaves the EU,” he said. But Mr O’Leary challenged him, saying: “I think that’s an impossibility because there is no goodwill in Europe towards Britain. “The French and the Germans? When they have the opportunity to stick one into the British, they like nothing better. “This is going to be a real mess, and Brexit will be one of the great, economic, suicide notes in history.” He told MEPs: “By September 2018, when your average British voter is sitting down to work out where he is going on his holidays in 2019, the two options he will have are to drive to Scotland, or get a ferry to Ireland. “The sensible outcome here is to ignore the plebiscite (vote) of 12 months ago, stay in Europe and continue to benefit from Open Skies. “We’ll be taking a lot of aircraft out of the UK in April 2019 and relocating them to European regional airports, who’ll be seeing a lot more growth than they’ll know how to handle. “Although Heathrow, thankfully, will be empty, probably for a period of months.”

New fear for V.W. owners DRIVERS throughout Britain are complaining that their Volkswagen cars are losing power after the removal of controversial technology, which enabled the company to cheat on emission tests.

In 2015, the “emissions scandal” emerged when it was revealed that VW had installed a so-called “defeat device” to make its cars appear more environmentally-friendly. The car-maker has recalled 1.2 million cars - VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda diesels in the UK, with more than 720,000 taken into garages so far to have the defeat device fitted. But VW has so far refused to offer any compensation to motorists in Britain, despite agreeing to pay

billions in civil and criminal penalties in the US. Yet an investigation broadcast last Wednesday by BBC’s Watchdog consumer programme showed that thousands of these car parts later triggered “limp mode”. It is a safety feature which protects the engine when it detects a problem by cutting almost all power, resulting in juddering and rapid deceleration, often to speeds of around 20mph. This can be dangerous and terrifying for the driver and passengers. Kirsty Blackwell, from Wiltshire, said her VW Caddy car was adapted, and then went into limp mode when she was travelling with her children and dogs at 70mph on the motorway. “My children started to panic, because they didn’t know what was happening,” she added. “It took a lot of concentration to get the car safely off the road, with lorries thundering past

in the dark. It was a scary experience, and I don’t feel particularly confident with my car any more.” Lisa Bryant-Jones, from Chepstow, took her VW Passat in for the defeatdevice fix, and found that her car kept going into limp mode afterwards. On one occasion, when she was driving with her son on a dual carriageway, the car went into limp mode, And, while Lisa was manoeuvring the car off the road, a lorry crashed into them. She and her son were physically unharmed, but both were shocked and

the car was written off. Lisa said: “I’ll never buy a Volkswagen car again.” But a VW spokesman said: “There is no systemic problem. The overwhelming majority of customers have been fully satisfied.” This appears to undermine evidence from the cargiant’s UK boss, Paul Willis, who told MPs that the software fix had no impact on driving. Labour MP Louise Ellman, who chaired the House of Commons’ Transport committee for more than a decade, and investigated VW, said: “I was not at all

satisfied with their answers. They are not credible. “This is simply outrageous. Volkswagen should stop denying the problem they’ve created and put things right.” She added: “VW’s customers should be compensated. They have been treated in a grossly unfair manner.” Lawyers are also attempting to win thousands of pounds in compensation for those who bought VW diesel cars made between 2009 and 2015. The company is now under growing pressure to compensate UK drivers over the diesel-emissions cheating scandal, with more than 11 million cars worldwide affected by the scandal. Yet the car-maker, which insisted that cheat devices were not fitted in cars sold in the UK, said it was applying a “technical fix” to them anyway to give drivers “peace of mind”.

Roller-coaster crash leaves riders injured

MORE than 30 people were injured when two cars collided on the “Tren de la Mina” roller-coaster at Madrid’s Parque de Atracciones, one of Spain’s oldest theme parks. Some 27 people, among them children, needed hospital treatment for minor inju-

ries, including neck, back and stomach pains. One train carriage, which had just completed the loop, failed to stop, hitting the back of another carriage which was ready to leave. Roller-coaster riders can wear virtual-reality goggles to heighten

their experience, so those in the approaching carriage would not have seen the static car ahead. The roller-coaster, which reaches a height of 17.5m and has a maximum speed of 35mph, is being checked by technicians to find out what went wrong.

FROZEN IN TIME!

A SHRINKING glacier in Switzerland has revealed two frozen bodies, believed to be of a couple who went missing 75 years ago. Marceline and Francine Moulding disappeared at a height of 2,600m (8,530ft) after going to tend to their cows in the Alps in August 1942. They were farmers, whose seven children never gave up hope of finding them. Their youngest daughter, now 79, said she was now planning to give her parents the funeral they deserved. Mr and Mrs Moulding were never found, despite extensive searches, and Marline Smouldering said: “We spent our whole lives looking for them. But, after 75 years of waiting, this news gives me a deep sense of calm.” Local police said the bodies were discovered last week on Tsanfleuron glacier, above the Les Diablerets resort, by a worker from ski-lift company, Glacier 3000. And, they say, a DNA test will be conducted in several days. Director Bernhard Tschannen said his employee found some back-packs, tin bowls

and a glass bottle, as well as male and female shoes, and part of a body under the ice. Valais police issued a statement saying that a book, a backpack and a watch had been taken to Lausanne for forensic analysis. Mr Tschannen said that it was likely the couple had fallen into a crevasse, and the way they were dressed implied that they could have been there for 70 or 80 years. “The bodies were lying near each other” he said. “It was a man and a woman, wearing clothing dating from the period of World War Two.” The weathered belongings of Marceline and Francine Dumoulin were also found on the Tsanfleuron glacier, alongside their bodies. Marline said her mother, a teacher, rarely went on such walks with her husband, be-

cause she spent much of her adult life pregnant, and it was difficult terrain. Her daughter even climbed the glacier three times in search of them, to no avail. Within two months of their disappearance, though, she and her siblings were placed with different families, and lost contact over the years. She now wants to hold a long-awaited funeral, but will not wear black, should it happen. “I think white would be more appropriate,” she said. “It represents hope, which I never lost.” The bodies of numerous missing climbers have been discovered in the Alps in recent years. And climatologists say a rise in global temperatures is causing the ice to recede, revealing the corpses of those missing for decades.

Youngsters’ gun charges

LOCAL Police in La Laguna have served denuncias on several youths in Valle de Guerra for various crimes. The officers reported the driver of the vehicle for driving recklessly between Tacoronte and Tejina, and not having a driving licence. The other occupants in the car displayed air-guns from the car windows, for which they also had no licences.

Thief is brought down to earth…

AN Algerian man was arrested by police after stealing a wallet from a Lithuanian holiday-maker on a Los Cristianos beach. And by the time they caught up with the 49-year-old, he was hiding on the roof of a nearby, dilapidated building, Villa del Peña, which is used by squatters. The Algerian, who pounced when he saw the 62-yearold leaving his belongings behind as he went for a swim, grabbed his wallet containing 200 euros and a mobile phone. A witness described the thief to Local Police, and which way he fled, which proved enough information for them. He was arrested and placed at the disposal of Arona Courts.

Cops keep close watch LOCAL Police in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas arrested two men aged 20 and 25, for drugtrafficking during a recent concert at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus. They saw the pair selling cocaine and crack, one of them using a watch to conceal the cocaine packets by stripping the mechanism. They were taken into custody, pending an appearance before local magistrates.

Underwater museum making such a splash

THE underwater Museo Atlántico (Atlantic Museum), in the Lanzarote sea, opened on 10th January to much acclaim, and is now showing 300 sculptures by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor. It is the first project of its kind in Europe, but it’s not Taylor’s first such scheme. In 2006, he created an underwater sculpture park in Grenada, in the Antilles, and in 2009 he opened MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte), submerging 500 sculptures off the coast of Cancún, in Mexico. The museum occupies 2,500sq/m at the bottom of Las Coloradas bay, south of the island, and has two aims: one artistic and the other conservationist. The sculptures are made of pH neutral cement to create an artificial reef, which, over time, will help the marine biomass flourish. The museum, promoted by Lanzarote authorities and co-financed by the Canarian

Government, enjoys the greatest international media impact of all the Islands, says regional tourism chief

Mariate Lorenzo. And in case you are wondering, there are two options for visitors to view the contents:

snorkelling or scuba-diving, which requires authorisation to dive to depths of 12 metres.

Ban this bullfight!

Tourism degree

graduates TWENTY-FIVE new professionals graduated this week, following a university tourism course in Adeje spanning four years.

THOUSANDS of people from all over Europe, and as far away as Taiwan and Brazil, have signed a petition to ban a bullfight in the Cadiz area of La Linea. Four representatives of the Campo de Gibraltar antibullfighting movement

(pictured) delivered the 8,000-plus petition to La Linea Town Hall to demonstrate the growing, global opposition to bullfighting. The event, set for tomorrow (Saturday) at the local bullring, has been opposed by locals and many other Spaniards, and those of other nationalities. Linda Zemmler, a member of the organisation, said: “We

are opposed to the bullfight as we consider it to be an example of extreme animal cruelty. “Considering how fast the petition has taken off, we are not the only ones who share this belief.” Linda, who works in Gibraltar as a product owner, added: “Together, we can bring awareness to as many people as possible.”

Lucky lorry-driver saved by smart cop

THE driver of a lorry, which careered off a bridge into the sea, was saved from drowning by a sharp-eyed Cadiz policeman, after avoiding a pile up.

The lorry-driver was forced to veer to one side to avoid smashing into two vehicles, which had already crashed. But he was unable to regain control of his vehicle, which went flying over the side of the Jose

Leon de Carranza Bridge. Off-duty officer Miguel Angel Comesaña, who spotted him in the water, said: “I knew I had to act quickly.” He drove to the nearby port, where he was able to borrow an inflatable dinghy, and he and two others rowed to scene to rescue the driver. The dramatic episode was captured on CCTV by the DGT, Spain’s traffic department, and witnesses described the incident as “something straight out of a movie”.

The ceremony was held in the town’s Convento, complete with families and friends, as well as Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Antonio Martinón Cejas, Rector of the University of La Laguna. This is the second wave of graduates from this relatively new course, based in the Adeje campus. Mayor Fraga said: “This is a very special event, and very significant for Adeje. This second graduation ceremony is no less important because it marks the path we have taken. “We have travelled far to arrive at this point, as have you … you who have chosen to place your confidence in the South Campus for your studies in tourism.” The Mayor also referred

to the series of celebrations in parallel this year, with the Summer University celebrating 25 years, the University of La Laguna 225 years, and the borough’s first secondary school, the Los Olivos institute, which is also marking 25 years of educating Adeje’s young people. Rector Martinón thanked the new graduates for choosing to follow this career path, studying with the ULL, and in Adeje. He said the university was created 225 years ago to meet a social need, and is here today to continue serving the people in the field of education and investigation. “I believe we have carried out extraordinary work, and today we are seeing 25 young people enter into the professional world,” he said. “In the ULL, we believe in the capacity of the individual, and we place primary importance on the merits of each individual.”

UK inflation sends GBP/EUR reeling

By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

HOPES that the Bank of England (BoE) might increase interest rates in the not-too-distant future helped the pound firm against the euro over the first couple of weeks of July. However, recent developments have seen the GBP/ EUR exchange rate experience a reversal of fortunes. Since the beginning of the month, GBP/EUR has fallen

from highs of 1.1434 euros to lows of 1.1187. EUR/GBP, on the other hand, peaked at £0.8938, after hitting lows of £0.8745. EUR/USD has been shifting between $1.1320 and $1.1581. Conflicting comments from high-profile, BoE officials have been the driving force behind GBP/EUR exchange-rate movement in recent weeks, with hints from some that interest rates should be increased soon, lending the pound support. However, BoE rate-hike expectations were dealt a blow, when the UK’s latest inflation figures were published. The inflation stats revealed an unexpected easing in consumer price pressures in June, a result which eases pressure on the BoE to increase interest rates. GBP/EUR stumbled after the report was published, with Sterling also sliding against a number of the other majors.

Demand for the pound was also weaker, in the face of reports of serious infighting in the Conservative government, about the direction Brexit negotiations should take. With the cabinet divided, the uncertainty surrounding Brexit is likely to persist. The euro, meanwhile, was bolstered by its negative correlation with the US dollar. Falling Federal Reserve ratehike expectations, and concerns that President

Donald Trump will fail to push through any of his promised tax and spending reforms, have driven the US dollar lower, and boosted EUR exchange rates in the process. If the UK’s Brexit negations fail to progress positively, the pound could come under increasing strain over the next few weeks. Sterling could also struggle if the odds of the Bank of England increasing interest rates in the near future fall further, because of disappointing domestic

data or cautious commentary from policymakers. However, the euro may also come under pressure if the European Central Bank (ECB) doesn’t start getting a bit more hawkish, with regards to its own policy outlook. Any direction from the ECB about when it might start winding down its quantitative easing scheme will be closely attended to. It’s holiday time again ONCE again, summer is here with a vengeance. Temperatures are soaring, and, with the influx of tourists, you have to keep your wits about you at all times when driving.

Holiday makers who rent a car may be driving on the opposite side of the road to their home country, like the British, so you need to be extra vigilant, and try to anticipate their possible mistakes. One very common incident happens on roundabouts when drivers take the wrong lane. For example, if you want to carry straight on, it’s best to take the outside lane, and, if you intend to turn left, take the one on the inside. What many people do is take the outside lane with the intention of turning left, but the driver on the inside lane, who is going straight on, has to be very careful to avoid a collision with the vehicle going all the way round. Aside from the inevitable increase in traffic accidents with the huge influx of tourists from around the world, you need to make sure your car is up to scratch, too. For example, always make

Have you got that Liberty feeling?

sure your tyre pressures are correct, by checking them at least once a month, especially as road surfaces become very hot indeed, and will affect the pressures. Needless to say, check the tyres, too, and make sure they are in good condition with enough tread. Also, check the car’s radiator water level; the last thing you want is to overheat if you’re stuck in a queue, and, worse still, have to wait for a breakdown truck.

It’s illegal to run out of screen-wash, so keep this topped up. Driving with flip-flops, or shoes without backs, is not permitted. Obviously, seat belts must be worn all round, and children need safety harnesses. And, stating the obvious, mobile phones must not be used for speaking (unless using a built-in, hands-free device), and definitely no texting! If you do have an accident, remember the following: Stay calm and use the

reflective vest Use your vehicle’s emergency flashers, and place two warning triangles at appropriate distances from the vehicle. Stay away from oncoming traffic Call 112 if necessary Take photos of the incident, when safe to do so Get statements and contact information from any witnesses Complete the accidentreport forms. Award-winning documentary series Long Lost Family returns to ITV for a brand new seven-part series, as presenters Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell reunite more family members desperate to find their missing relatives. For thousands of people across Britain, someone is missing from their lives and finding them can seem like an impossible task. Using every technique, from DNA technology to painstaking detective work, the series traces people that no-one else could find, uncovering family secrets and finally answering questions that have haunted entire lives. With searches extending to Nigeria, Ethiopia, America and Australia, no stone is left unturned as Davina and Nicky bring families back together. Sadly, not every story can have a happy ending and there are some tragic outcomes. But even when missing family members have passed away, our searchers have been comforted by meeting other family members we’ve discovered. The new series includes many firsts, including the programme’s first deaf contributor and the first time we’ve ever taken on a search on behalf of a birth father searching on his own for a child who was given up for adoption.

“She was our mum. She still is our mum. And of course, as a son I would say this, she was the best mum in the world...She smothered us with love, that’s for sure.” HRH Prince Harry This new landmark ITV documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, celebrates the life and work of Diana, Princess of Wales, in the 20th year since her tragic death. Made by Oxford Film and Television, producers of ITV’s ‘Our Queen at 90’, the film is built around contributions from HRH The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, both of whom talk openly about their mother and pay tribute to the many ways her influence has shaped their lives. The 90-minute film includes photographs of Diana never seen before, taken from an album that Diana had assembled. The brothers look through the private family album and recall some of the most joyful and touching moments from their childhood. Studying a photo of The Princess holding him whilst pregnant with Prince Harry, Prince William says “Believe it or not, you and I are both in this photograph, you’re in the tummy!” Prince Harry says: “This is the first time that the two of us have ever spoken about her as a mother.” Prince William says: “She was very informal and really enjoyed the laughter and the fun.” Prince Harry says: “She was one of the naughtiest parents.” Prince William says: “But she understood that there was a real life outside of Palace walls.” Prince Harry: “She was our mum. She still is our mum. And of course, as a son I would say this, she was the best mum in the world. She smothered us with love, that’s for sure.” Prince William and Prince Harry share some of their earliest memories of their mother, recall the final contact they had with her before her tragic death in August 1997 and discuss their feelings in the aftermath of losing their mother. Prince William explains how he keeps her memory alive for his own children. The documentary also celebrates the achievements of Diana’s work and her sons’ determination to continue the campaigns that were closest to her heart. The film will also include individual contributions from the Princess’ family and friends, several of whom have never spoken before. They include Sir Elton John, Rihanna, The Rt. Hon. The Earl Spencer (Diana’s brother), Harry Herbert, Lady Carolyn Warren, William van Straubenzee, Gerard McGrath, Jayne Fincher (Royal Photographer), Anna Harvey (personal stylist), Lord Victor Adebowale and Graham Dillamore, (Gardens Manager, Kensington Palace). The documentary is commissioned for ITV by Jo Clinton-Davis, Controller of Factual and Sue Murphy, Head of Factual Entertainment. Jo says: “This new ITV film will offer viewers a fresh and revealing insight into Princess Diana through the personal and intimate reflections of her two sons and of her friends and family, many of whom have never spoken before, to bring together a definitive portrait of a unique person who touched the lives of millions.” The film’s Executive Producer at Oxford Film and Television is Nick Kent, and the Producer / Director is Ashley Gething. Nick said: “This film will show Princess Diana in a way she has never been seen before, through the eyes of the two people who knew her best.”

Jodi’s Lovely Letters

Monday 24th July, BBC1, 19.30

Jodi’s Lovely Letters follows Jodi as she writes letters to strangers from all over the world, and also prepares to curate her first ever exhibition, based on her work. But life isn’t easy for the 28 year-old, who suffers with depression, anxiety and ME. Jodi Bickley from Birmingham, started writing letters when she was just five years old. She was encouraged to write a letter to her grandmother who had just passed away - it was a letter to an angel. From then on Jodi began to write letters and notes to strangers. She would leave them on busy Birmingham buses, in coffee shops, shopping centres - anywhere where they could be found and potentially brighten up someone’s day. But after being bed-bound for a year and half from encephalitis, and severely suffering with her ME, it all got too much - and she prepared to kill herself. But luckily an app which she’d downloaded to cheer herself up on bad days pinged her back to life, making her laugh - something she hadn’t done in a very long time. If something so small and uplifting could change her mood dramatically maybe she could do the same for others. And so Jodi decided to set up her website to help people who were feeling just like her. Jodi then started her website, One Million Lovely Letters, to help people in need of support just like her. Anyone wanting a letter can request one via email. She tells Aled Jones, who presents the programme and met her in her home, that her aim is to write to one million people, and help them in any way she can with her kind and uplifting words. Since starting the project in 2013 Jodi has written more than 4,000 letters to people all over the world and currently has a further 8,000 requests in her inbox. The Our Lives series continues on BBC One at 7.30pm. This series will reflect stories from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the English Regions and has been directly commissioned from teams based in those areas. All 12 programmes will feature a range of topical and human interest stories, revealing the extraordinary variety and richness of life in modern times.

Wild Alaska Live

Sunday 23rd July, BBC1, 19.00

The feast kicks off. Who has arrived, and what are they after? Three hundred million salmon are heading in to Alaskan waters right now. It is one of the most spectacular animal migrations on the planet. Liz Bonnin will be live from Katmai National Park, one of the remotest parts of Alaska, where hundreds of brown bears eagerly await the salmon arrival. Matt Baker will be broadcasting live from Tongass National Forest, the largest temperate rainforest on the planet, on the trail of a mother black bear who is relying on the salmon run to feed her three tiny cubs. And Steve Backshall will be going live underwater as he attempts to join the salmon for the final hurdle on their spectacular journey. We watch as over 15,000 walrus gather on a tiny island miles off the mainland, and the crew team up with marine biologists as they search for the returning orca families and study what their behaviours can teach us about the current health of Alaska’s ocean.

Monday 24th July, ITV1, 20.00

Sisters Yvonne and Angela have been extreme cleaners for nearly two decades, and have worked on almost 6,000 jobs between them. This time, they are in London tackling the dirtiest flat they have ever encountered on the job. An elderly lady had been struggling to cope in a one bedroom flat. When the girls go to investigate they find a scene of heartbreaking squalor, with damp and mould throughout the flat spread by a leaking pipe that hasn’t been fixed in years. The owner’s dog has left faeces all over the floor, the furniture is rotting and food has been discarded throughout. What’s more the bedroom has not been touched in 9 years. When the girls enter they find everything covered in mould and cobwebs. The occupant hasn’t set foot in the room since the death of her husband. Yvonne and Angela have 5 days to turn the flat around so they elderly lady can come home. Maxine set up her cleaning business 12 years ago and daughter Jasmine joined 2 years ago. They are an extreme cleaning duo who love the caring side of the profession. Today, they are in South London dealing with a hoarder who has 20 years’ worth of possessions cluttering his flat. Dirg has a job coordinating minicabs in the daytime but comes home to a house that is utterly chaotic. Every room and every surface including the floor is covered in what Dirg has collected. For the last two years he’s been forced to sleep on a makeshift bed on the bedroom floor. Maxine and Jasmine have just 3 days to get the flat in order, after which Dirg will return and see the transformation. In Somerset, we meet Shaun and his team, extreme cleaners who specialise in full house clearances. Today, they are clearing a flat for a landlord. Only when they get inside do they see the full scale of the mess. The resident appears not to have thrown anything away in years and rotting household rubbish almost fills the rooms. It takes the team a full day of hard graft and a strong stomach to finish the job and leave it ready for the landlord to redecorate.

The Sweet Makers: A Georgian Treat Wednesday 26th July, BBC2, 20.00

Four modern confectioners use original recipes, equipment and ingredients to recreate the extravagant displays of a Georgian confectionery shop. In this episode they learn how a dessert course was put together and discovering how our national lust for sugar changed Britain forever. Guided by food historian Dr Annie Gray and social historian Emma Dabiri, our 21st century sweet-makers are in Bath to experience firsthand the life of confectioners in late 18th and early 19th century England - a time when the wealth from the sugar plantations of the Caribbean had transformed Britain, and Bath’s residents were making a fortune from the slave trade. They’ll be crafting everything from towering jellies made from boiled calves feet to glasses of Parmesan ice cream costing more than the average daily wage. And their final dessert course includes an edible landscape. Our confectioners are chocolatier Paul A Young, wedding cake designer Cynthia Stroud, sweet consultant Andy Baxendale, and chocolatier Diana Short. They are spending four days using original recipes, ingredients and equipment to create dishes that haven’t been made, let alone tasted, for hundreds of years. They’ll discover the money trail that leads from the Caribbean plantations to their customers and the extraordinary story of the first ethical revolt by consumers - the sugar boycott.

W C c hoi c e Inside the London Fire Brigade

Thursday 27th July, ITV1, 21.00 Last month London suffered its most devastating fire since the blitz. The Grenfell Tower tragedy shook Britain to the core and on the front line of the disaster were the heroic firefighters of the London Fire Brigade. It brought to the fore an emergency service who risk everything to help those in need. This three part documentary series followed the brigade over the last year as they responded to a staggering range of emergencies. It provides a unique insight into their work, with firefighters filming themselves on the dangerous front line using special fire cameras. It is access on an unprecedented scale to incidents across the whole of London. In this first programme, firefighters talk for the very first time about the Grenfell fire and their experiences of that tragic night. In never heard before accounts of what happened inside the tower, firefighters describe how they feared it might collapse and the horror of what they saw. Whilst fires on the level of Grenfell are rare, the London Fire Brigade still deals with around 20,000 fires a year. And increasingly they also respond to a range of incidents, including floods and road traffic accidents. The film follows Edric as he responds to the Croydon tram crash where 7 passengers lost their lives. The film shows the affect this has on the rescuers and how they deal with the trauma amongst themselves.

Along the way, Gregg discovers that there can be up to 20 different teas in your bag and that the recipe for the blend is altered every day, measured against a standard created in 1978. Meanwhile, Cherry Healey is discovering the secrets of the tea leaf in an African tea processing plant. She learns that 40% of each leaf is made up of chemicals called polyphenols. Historian Ruth Goodman investigates tea adulteration. In the 19th century, there were eight separate factories in London which existed solely to dry and re-colour used tea leaves.

DIY SOS The Big Build BBC1, 21:00

Scott Russell and Jenny Watts got together when they were 16 years old. Twenty-two years and three boys later, they are now a family of five. Charlie, their third son, was born with severe disabilities - spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and global developmental delay. Since he was born 13 years ago, they have struggled in a two-up, two-down end-of-terrace home, and Charlie faces going into care because they simply cannot keep him at home. Carrying him upstairs is a daily battle, and the older boys are crammed into tiny converted attic rooms. In the biggest build ever on an individual house, Nick, the boys and Naomi Cleaver rebuild the whole of the downstairs as well as remodelling the rest of the house to provide a more suitable home for Charlie and his family.

Lemon water packs a punch

Are you loving your look? By Carl pattison from Robot

WE all love a hair makeover now and then; something to change the way we see ourselves, and to make us feel “new” again. Wanting to change your image is one thing, but, being told to, can be another thing altogether. Most of us don’t like being told that our hair image may be wrong, the cut isn’t flattering us or the colour isn’t the right shade. You should have a good enough relationship with

your stylist to be able to discuss, and listen to, his or her ideas for your hair. Most stylists don’t get a kick out of making you feel bad about yourself. It’s our job to take your hair in the best direction possible. There’s nothing worse than seeing hair that could be

great, looking, well... drab. Your hair is the crown you don’t take off. So it doesn’t matter if you’re dressed to kill; if your hair’s not hot, then your whole look will be off. There are always modifications that can be made if you’re not happy with your hair. It might need a whole re-vamp or only a slight change, but it’s your stylist who should be able to take you there. We at Robot Hair believe that when you walk out of the salon our name is on your head, so make sure that when you leave your salon, you’re getting looks for all the right reasons.

How dare they? By Carl Pattison

LOVE it or hate it, fashion is an art, and fashion is the one of the biggest retailers of our modern time. I often hear people criticising way-out images or models on runways, wearing what might seem ridiculous garments that no one would wear. That’s right! No one is going to put on this stuff, yet there’s a purpose for that “silly” item you’re seeing, being propelled down the runway. Fashion designers, mostly, come from architectural colleges,

art schools or design academies, and have spent years learning their trade. Fashion is made up of structure and vision, creating sculptures from fabric and many other materials. This

is why, when you see avant-garde ideas being show-cased, it’s for a reason...ATTENTION. This creates advertising for the designer; who wants to see everyday clothing paraded at Paris Fashion week? What you see will be watered down and copied worldwide; that’s how you get to see new fashion in your clothing stores. So, next time you’re sifting through your favourite store, give a thought to all the designers who have inspired millions around the world to create what we wear everyday. Let’s celebrate fashion, not ridicule it.

By Val Sainsbury LEMONS are rich in Vitamin C and rejuvenate the skin from within, bringing a glow to your face. One of the major health benefits of drinking warm, lemon water is that it paves the way for losing weight faster.

Warm lemon water serves as the perfect “good morning drink”, as it aids the digestive system, and makes the process of eliminating the waste products from the body easier. It helps to prevent the problem of constipation and diarrhoea, by ensuring smooth bowel functions. A glass of lemon juice contains less than 25 calories, and is a rich source of nutrients like calcium, potassium, vitamin C and pectin fibre. It also has medicinal values and antibacterial properties, and contains traces of iron and Vitamin A. Lemon, a fruit popular for its therapeutic properties, helps maintain your immune system, and protects you from the clutches of most types of infections. It also plays the role of a blood purifier. Lemon is a fabulous antiseptic, and lime water also works

wonders for people with heart problems, because of its high potassium content. Lemons are an excellent and rich source of vitamin C, an essential nutrient that protects the body against immunesystem deficiencies. They contain pectin fibre, which is very beneficial for colon health, and also serves as a powerful antibacteriaI. Having warm lemon juice, early in the morning, helps flush out toxins, aids digestion and encourages the production of bile. It is also a great source of citric acid, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. It helps prevent the growth and multiplication of pathogenic bacteria that cause infec-

tions and diseases, and helps to reduce pain and inflammation in joints and knees, as it dissolves uric acid. It strengthens the liver, by providing energy to the liver enzymes when they are too dilute, and helps balance the calcium and oxygen levels in this organ. In the case of heartburn, sipping concentrated lemon juice can bring relief. It benefits the skin, and helps prevent the formation of wrinkles and acne. As well as keeping the eyes healthy, it assists the fight against eye problems. Lemon juice aids the production of digestive juices, and helps replenish body salts, especially after a strenuous workout session. The potassium content in lemons helps to nourish brain and nerve cells. Its cleansing and healing effects will have positive effects on your health. However, it is very important to note that when lemon juice comes directly into contact with the teeth, it can ruin the enamel. It is advised to consume it diluted, and to rinse the mouth thoroughly afterwards. So, make it a part of your daily routine to drink a glass of warm lemon water in the morning, and enjoy its health benefits.

If you can’t stand the heat

MOST people come to Tenerife on holiday, or to live here, because of the great climate, but it’s that time of year again when it’s excessively hot, and you need to think about how to make your home as comfortable as possible. You will probably be aware that most original Canarian houses had very thick walls and small windows, and these were effective measures taken to keep out the heat. However, tourists and new residents (and particularly the Brits who can’t get enough of the sun) have influenced the design of new-builds so almost all of them have patio doors to admire the view, but that comes at a price! Big expanses of glass mean lots of sunshine and heat going into your home. So what can you do to minimise the effect of the intense heat of summer, without spending a fortune? Obviously, the best solution is air conditioning. There are multiple solutions available; different qualities for different budgets and

fitting needs. If you’re living in a community, you’ll have to check the community’s rules for fitting outside airconditioning units. Every community varies, and allows different things. Your AC specialist will have to accommodate these rules, but there is always a solution available! If you don’t have the budget for air conditioning, there are other things you can do. Firstly, you can invest in a range of curtains and blinds that are designed to keep out heat and light. The material has a sun-block layer in the middle, and they have the added benefit of making the room dark, allowing you to have a lie-in or a siesta, even in full daylight. Closing them when you go out means that you won’t come home to a house like an oven. Ceiling fans are a great addition to any home. They don’t actually chill the air, but move it about so that it feels cooler on your skin. There’s something so tropical and colonial about a fan, and it forms a great part of your interior design. Outside, you can install a blind that can be wound in and out

as needed, to provide shade for your patio area, and also to keep direct sunlight off your windows. Make sure you buy one of a good quality, with waterand-fade-resistant material. If you live within a community, there may be rules about the colour and style you are permitted to have. Ensure that any estimate you obtain includes fitting, as this is quite a specialist job. Also, consider putting a heat-resistant film on your windows. This needs to be fitted by professionals, and is not particularly cheap, but it is very effective at reflecting heat outwards. Depending on the grade of heat resistance you require, the film may make your windows more opaque with a greyish tint, so it’s a question of balance between keeping the heat out, and not affecting your view. Most of all, enjoy the summer weather, and, if need be, go down to the coast and enjoy the lovely sea breeze that keeps the island so temperate, almost all the year round. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789729. Estimates are free and without obligation.

The problem with ‘social’ drinking...

By Charlotte from CET

How many times do we say: “I don’t drink much; just a glass of wine with my dinner, and maybe a few extra over the weekend or when out with friends”? When you have thought about it, you realise that one glass is half a bottle, and it’s normally two glasses, but you have dismissed it in your mind! At the weekends you don’t drink much, just three or four, but when you really think about it, it’s more like five or six. You claim not to feel drunk, but you often don’t remember going home (another private realisation). You claim to not have a hangover the next day, but you have that horrible, stale taste in your mouth, and you feel heavy and lethargic. And you put off the “activity” you were going to undertake later. You resolve to not drink the following week. Monday arrives and you’ve had a rubbish day at work, and need just one drink to “de-stress”. Or, you have had a great day, and feel that you can “reward” yourself with “just the one”. One a day is good for you anyway, right? And, for goodness’

sake, do we not get to enjoy anything in life anymore? Should we be concerned about it? Drinking alcohol affects the mind, and that is why you need to consider if it is a hindrance for you. If it does get out of control it can wreck your life, even to the point of death, and can also detrimentally affect the lives of those around you. The answer, from a professional point of view, is to become aware of it. How much is it involved in your life? I don’t just mean the drinking, but the thoughts and actions that go along with it, and also the times before and after. For example, do you find yourself thinking about what you would like to drink when you get home, or to your destination? Are you planning what you want to drink, or what you need to eat so that you can drink? Or thinking about what you can drink instead of alcohol? Or what the evening/day will be like without drinking? Do you spend time thinking about how many you can drink to avoid becoming “too drunk”? This is not you controlling the situation; this is the alcohol controlling you. If you have to think about it, or plan what

you want/don’t want to do, it has become something that is out of your control. What if having a good time didn’t include drinking? What could you think about if you weren’t planning what you were going to drink today, or over the weekend? How much more time would you have to do something positive and enjoyable with your life? How much money would you save? What other kind of life is out there without alcohol? Is there one? Yes! There is! All you need to do is contact me, and we can make a plan to start your discovery of life without alcohol, or with very little. Discover more about what life here in Tenerife has to offer without it. Discover what YOU can achieve without alcohol being your only option. Enjoy an enlightening journey to consistent happiness and contentment, and really “live the dream”; more importantly, YOUR dream. You came to Tenerife for a reason, and it wasn’t for the alcohol. Don’t wait any longer! Call me: 654931886. Flambé favourites By Stefania Roberto THIS week, we treated ourselves to a feast with the flambé specialists at The Oyster Catcher restaurant, on the popular Mirador strip in Los Cristianos.

Established since 2006, and taken over three years ago by La Gomera native Angel and his more-thancapable team, The Oyster Catcher is a firm favourite among residents and holidaymakers alike. The range of flambés includes prawns, mushrooms and fillets of fish, steak and

pork. All are created in front of you with a flourish and flair, using only the freshest ingredients, delivered daily. We opted for the prawn-andmushroom flambé to start, with a side of bruschetta,

topped with tomato and feta cheese, to mop up the sauces. The prawns and mushrooms were tossed in garlic, white wine, parsley and a hint of chili. I then chose Sole Meunière

with a lemony caper sauce with creamy mash, and a fresh salad on the side. My partner selected Fillet Steak Diane in a cream, mustard and mushroom sauce, set alight with the finest brandy. It came with crunchy veg and a dish of roast potatoes, which were crispy on the outside, but fluffy in the middle. Many people may not realise that The Oyster Catcher has a wider range available, other than flambés; they serve breakfasts and lunches, too. And, because Angel’s better half

hails from sunny UK, they are one of the few places in the area to serve a traditional roast dinner every day! Other dishes include steakand-ale pies, and a twoperson mixed grill or Paella Valenciana. They even have their own unique “OysterCatcher” sauce. Their specials change daily, depending on the availability of the fresh products, and, once these dishes are gone, they’re gone! So, get in there quickly. They’re open 11am-11pm, seven days a week. You may have noticed that I haven’t yet mentioned desserts; I was saving the best until last. The selection included Lemon Cheesecake and Toffee Lumpy Bumpy, and a range of fruit flambés. And, of course, our favourite Crepe Suzette, doused in local liqueurs. If these don’t get your taste buds tingling, nothing will.

A giant horse-meat scandal involved vets and breeders THE Guardia Civil, in harness with Europol, has dismantled a pan-European horse-meat racket, led by Spanish-based Dutchman Jan Fasen, who exported meat unfit for human consumption, mostly to Belgium and Italy.

Operation Gazel began a year ago and, already, it has resulted in 65 arrests in Spain, including slaughterhouse owners, vets and breeders. Authorities from France, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, Romania, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Britain all took part in the raid. Fasen is alleged to be behind a network, whose profits are estimated at 20m euros, according to the Guardia. But several

bank accounts have been blocked and property confiscated, as part of the investigation. And police officers have also seized five, new, luxury vehicles. Nine of the suspects held, including Fasen, remain in custody after a court in the northern Spanish city of Ponferrada sent them to preventive prison. Fasen was arrested in Belgium in April, when he took a trip there, then transferred to Spain. Horses raised for meat must undergo stringent health checks. But the criminal ring was, allegedly, selling meat products obtained from animals used for recreation, which are not put through these controls. Those under arrest, and being investigated, face charges which include animal abuse, documentforgery, money-laundering, and criminal association. There are also charges

of crimes against public health, because analysed samples turned up traces of antibiotics, which are not allowed in meat meant for human consumption, said sources familiar with the investigation. Fasen, at the centre of the ring, was living in the Spanish Mediterranean town of Calpe, in Alicante. And Europol, in a press release, noted that this same individual was involved in a 2013 case of adulterated beefburgers in Ireland, in which the products were found to contain horse-meat. The latest operation began in June 2016, when the Guardia Civil’s Environmental Protection Service (Seprona) located Fasen in Calpe, from where he “was handling the entire network from the shadows, placing trusted individuals in charge in all the territories where the ring had a presence”.

The same sources said that they were awaiting new reports from the Spanish Consumption, Food Safety and Nutrition Agency. Horses used for recreational purposes are fitted with microchips, containing information about each animal. During the raid, Spanish officers found a stable in the northern region of Cantabria, where the chips were being extracted from animals’ necks with a knife. The property owners are being charged with animal abuse. Fasen even hired a businessman, Ramón Cerdá, who specialises in setting up companies, some of which have turned up in police probes into some of Spain’s biggest corruption scandals, such as Gürtel or Nóos. The horses were obtained in northern Spain and Portugal, and investigators suspect that some of them

might have been stolen. Three slaughterhouses, in Astorga, Toreno and Segovia, were charged with putting them down. The animals’ documents were forged so they could be passed off as fit for human consumption. Investigators stress that the arrested vets, some of whom worked independently, while others were on the regional government of Castilla y León’s payroll, should have checked the origins of the horses. After being slaughtered, the animals were transported by truck to a Toledo facility for processing, said the same sources. Although some of the products were sold in Spain - considered one of the biggest horse-meat exporters in the European Union, according to the latest Europol press release - most were exported to Italy and Belgium.

A happy podenco! OVER a year ago, this lovely podenco arrived at the refuge with a broken leg. She was extremely thin, and terrified of humans. Our vet operated to repair her leg, and, after she was well enough, we sent her to Germany to one of our refuges with which we collaborate. One of the members of staff fell in love with her and has adopted her. It's great to see such a happy ending for such a sad, traumatised dog, who now has such a good home. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. Cats Welfare News

Wayne needs a home

Holiday options for cat care SOME people believe that cats are fine for days with a big bowl of food, water, and a litter tray. But water can spill and food spoil, and, by day two, that litter tray will stink. So what do you do?

LITTLE Wayne is a special dog with special needs. He has a spinal condition that requires an operation and, while he waits for this, he needs a quiet and calm foster home where he can have lots of attention and love. He is in pain at times, and, because of this, does not have the patience right now to share a home with children or other animals. He simply wants to be with his person as much as possible, and to have very short toilet-walks. Ideally, he’d love to be with one or two adults who want to be with him, comfort him and love him. Can you, or perhaps someone you know, offer this gentle lad a foster home? If so, please contact us. Meet our dogs

Come and walk the doggies! Join the Live Arico dogwalking club on Saturday mornings from 11am. Our dogs absolutely love it, and you will, too. Send a Whatsapp to Eugenio on 633 717480, and he will meet you there. Happy trails! Live Arico shops Come and bag a bargain at any of our three shops: San Eugenio - opposite Hotel La Nina, at Las Carabelas, near Amanda's Bar. Open every day (104pm), and now Sundays! Los Cristianos - Calle Revron, near Thistle and Dragon Bar and play-park. Open daily (10-4pm) Golf del Sur - Golf Park, just before the lottery kiosk. Open Monday-Friday (106pm), Saturday (10-3pm), Sunday (10.30-3pm) DON’T THROW THINGS AWAY! Call Steve on 634 819410; we can sell them to help the dogs. Boarding facilities Many vets, groomers and kennels offer facilities for cats. Visit a selection of those recommended to you, to ensure they are perfect for your cat. Good catteries will require your cat to have up-to-date vaccinations and a clean bill of health. This is vital to ensure the health and well-being of the other cats, as well as your own. Kitty sleepovers This may work if the person does not have cats, or has those which are very friendly. They can be territorial, so this option may not bode well if they have cats which are, and they can't offer a secluded room for your kitty. This can cause stress for your cat and the resident cats, particularly with food and litter trays. To avoid issues, make sure that they are all up-to-date on vaccines, your cat gets along

with any resident cats, and that there are sufficient hide-away areas to reduce stress. Cat sitters Cat sitters may be professionals for hire, a family member, neighbour or friend that you trust to enter your home and care for your beloved feline(s). Someone who lives nearby, or isn’t opposed to staying over at your house, is ideal. Have the potential cat sitter over, prior to leaving them with your cats, so that they know where the food is, how much to feed, how to handle the litter tray, and so on. They can also take some time to let your cats become familiar with their scent, if they aren’t already. Cat of the week CLEO, a stunning, threecolour female, was found begging for food at

holiday apartments in Chayofa. Despite extensive advertising, her owners have not been found. She’s around three years old, neutered, microchipped, leukaemia negative and vaccinated. She is perfect for a family with busy lives, or anyone who doesn't have the time (and you do need time) to look after a kitten. Contact us by www.catswelfare-tenerife.com, ring or WhatsApp Maria (English) 646629129, seven days a week 9-6pm, or Sandra (Spanish/German) after 6pm, on 671282773. All cats and kittens go on trial so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding, etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Protesters set sights on new Canary telescopes THE astronomical observatories in the Canary Islands are now 30 years old, and they’re still in top shape, which encourages scientists across the world to want to set up state - of-the -art telescopes there.

The Canaries has, recently, become an alternative site proposal for the colossal Thirty Metre Telescope (TMT). The Islands will also host the European Solar Telescope, while construction is underway on the first of 20 telescopes in a network known as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). All of these facilities would add to the numerous, astronomical devices already in place in Tenerife, and, most particularly, on La Palma, which sits on the western edge of the Spanish archipelago. Normally, scientists have a hard time attracting funds and drumming up interest in their projects. Lately, though, the biggest headaches for astronomers have been caused by local opposition to their plans. In La Palma, local officials have said that construction of the TMT could affect the island’s archaeological sites. “Any delay or objection that is not well-founded, can dissuade our international partners and cause a facility to be built elsewhere,” warned Carmen Vela, Spanish State Secretary for R&D, after a board meeting of the Canaries Astrophysics Institute (IAC). This agency, based in Tenerife, oversees the observatories there and in La Palma. And Vela expressed these concerns shortly after local officials had hindered construction of the first of the Cherenkov telescopes,

a 200-million-euro project, set to go up at La Palma’s Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. “The administrative road-block involving the first Cherenkov telescope is resolved,” said IAC director Rafael Rebolo. “It’s true that it required a lot of talks, but the licence has been granted.” Just two months ago, though, Rebolo said the construction was in danger. In 2015, Spain beat Mexico in the race to host the Cherenkov Telescope Array, which will be the world’s biggest gamma-ray telescope in the world, able to analyse dark matter and some of the most violent objects in the universe, such as black holes. A few months later, Takaaki Kajita, new winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics, laid the first stone, and speculated that a new Nobel winner might emerge from the new facility. But that was when the bureaucratic problems began. The Town Council of Garafía, where the telescopes are to go up, the IAC and La Palma Cabildo all began arguing over the construction permits. The confrontation escalated, leading to angry statements in the press. “Considering the

trouble they bring and the benefits they leave here, maybe it’s just not worth it to have the observatory in town,” said Yeray Rodríguez, the local Urban Planning Councillor. Mayor Martín Taño added: “The IAC is no better than any resident of Garafía.” The paperwork was, finally, sorted out, but there is still great resentment against IAC in Garafía, which is the poorest municipality in the Canaries, despite hosting the planet’s most cutting-edge, scientific instruments. Compounding this trouble is a recent complaint filed in court by a green group called Ben Magec, which says the project lacks an environmental-impact assessment, according to its own criteria. The group has already tried to halt telescope projects on two occasions, but its legal challenges have not prospered. IAC chief Rebolo said the Cherenkov project’s top brass was currently in La Palma to speak with government officials and see how the plan must be presented, “to ensure that we respect the laws scrupulously, and, of course, the environment, which has always been a matter of concern to this Institute.” Any delay to science projects can cause enormous expenses,

which could render them non-viable. But Rebolo insisted the paperwork should be dealt with as quickly as possible. “We will continue to ask them to be efficient,” he said, noting that science projects take up a lot of financial resources.

This sort of delay is precisely why the Thirty Metre Telescope could end up in La Palma instead of in Hawaii, where its construction was originally planned. Faced with local resistance there, scientists have already

chosen the Canaries as their Plan B. But the project could meet with similar problems in La Palma, where local officials have said that construction of the TMT might affect. At the last meeting of the International Scientific Committee of the Canary Islands Observatories, President Oskar van der Lühe expressed concern over the administrative hurdles in the way of the Cherenkov project. He called on all relevant authorities to work to remove them, so that the international community would want to carry on setting up telescopes in the Canaries. The archipelago is also expecting to host the European Solar Telescope, a 200-million-euro initiative for which the Canary Islands Government has already made a 4.5m euro allocation.

Football chiefs arrested in ‘corruption’ scandal TWO leading Tenerife football officials were arrested on Tuesday, alongside Angel Maria Villar, Spain’s Football Federation President, and his son Gorka, as part of an anticorruption probe.

The Guardia Civil also confirmed that raids were carried out at the National Federation headquarters and other properties, including the Regional Federation offices in Tenerife, and “headquarters of businesses and several private homes linked to the arrested individuals”. Held in the operation into alleged, financial mismanagement at the Federation were Villar’s son Gorka, Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Vice-President of finances; Juan Padrón, President of Tenerife’s Regional Federation in the Canary Islands, along with Tenerife Federation Secretary Ramon Hernandez. Police said the men were all arrested as part of a probe into the finances of the federations, on charges of improper management, misappropriation of funds, corruption and falsifying documents. During his 29 years as RFEF head, Ángel Villar has seen

eight national football coaches come and go. And he presided over a golden age for the sport in the country as Spain came out of the wilderness to win three major tournaments: the European Football Championships of 2008 and 2012, and the World Cup in 2010. But the legacy of Villar, whose sometimes murky RFEF presidency has been made possible by the support of a network of equally-long-serving

Football LEGEND is a word bandied around too easily in football. But Joe Harper was mobbed by a red wave of Aberdeen fans at Zizzi Bar in Los Cristianos as his beloved Dons started out on another Europa League campaign. Some had witnessed his goal-scoring exploits firsthand, while younger fans had simply heard the many tales of his 100% commitment and colourful lifestyle. But they all wanted to meet him! Joe made his debut for home-town club Morton at 16, and soon attracted

regional football chiefs, is now in serious doubt. That follows his arrest as part of an ongoing operation, targeting the upper echelons of the sport’s ruling body in Spain. The arrests come after investigations lasting more than a year, which stemmed from a formal complaint, made by Spain’s National Sports Council in 2016. Based on that information, Spain’s Guardia Civil believe that Villar organised for Spain’s national team to play

friendlies against countries which included South Korea and Argentina, with profits going to his son Gorka, a specialist in sports law who has no formal relationship with the RFEF. Authorities also believe that Ángel Villar could have used federation funds to pay off regional football chiefs, in a bid to maintain control at the top of the powerful federation. Villar was returned to office for a new four-year term in May, the eighth such occasion his contract has been renewed. The courts are now investigating him and others held, for crimes including corruption, embezzlement, improper management and possible asset-stripping in relation to a range of possible fraudulent activities. The sum of money involved is not known. Villar, who either knew or suspected his phones were being tapped, steered clear of subjects which could have implicated him. And he even mocked investigators by warning people he was talking with that the phones were not safe. But he tripped up. He believed his calls were being intercepted by a lower court in Madrid’s Majadahonda district, looking at possible embezzlement of federation funds by him and his friends, including an unnamed judge

in the Spanish capital. But those prosecutors were not just looking at possible fraud related to 1.2m-euro subsidies for football in poor countries. In fact, they were also investigating a range of more serious crimes on behalf of Spain’s High Court, and it was on the higher court orders that Villar’s phone calls were being bugged. Those lines were monitored for three months, and the recordings collected will be added to a summary of more than 2,000 pages, already compiled by Spanish High Court Judge Santiago Pedraz. They will also be added to documentation uncovered by the Central Operations Unit of the Guardia Civil, during Tuesday’s extensive searches. All this material will be used to build the case against Villar and other suspects, with investigations focusing on the period from 2009 up to the present. For now, Villar’s future is uncertain. He spent part of Tuesday night in police detention and could now be held in preventive custody, or be required to pay a civil bond. His international star has also faded because he appears to be out of favour with the new heads of both Europe’s governing soccer body Uefa and Fifa, its world equivalent.

Dons’ King Joey attention from down south. But Huddersfield proved to be a bad move. “I was just a kid and put in digs with four navvies, and wasn’t able to settle,” he recalled. Eddie Turnbull, “the best manager I ever had,” rescued him with a £40,000 move to Aberdeen after he shunned interest from Rangers and Celtic. That’s when the goals started flowing … his penalty to beat Celtic 1-0 for the Dons’ second-ever Scottish Cup, was followed by a prolific 33-goal haul in 1971-72 in 34 league games. That sparked a £180,000 move to Everton, which started well but turned sour. “It was difficult to say No to the move,” he said.

Bully for classy Richard IT was bully-bully for Richard who finished with a bull on 123 and then 127 when Pas O Nadas A welcomed Bar 180 A.

Along with some excellent darts from both sets of players, the encounter finished with a 5-3 victory for the Los Abrigos side. Boothen’s Steve was again in top form, following another maximum (with a 128 check-out), which went towards his side putting five past an improving Sundowners team. The Tavern A’s Alan was the only singles winner against in-form The Pub, who made it a perfect six out of six successes, Pirate Pete hitting a 144 finish to complete a 6-2 win. However, most games could have gone either way. Two of the old boys’ teams met in a closelyfought contest at Phoenix Bar, where Gaffers took the honours with a trebles win to record a 5-3 victory.

And the same result was recorded at Palms Pool Bar, when Emerald Lounge came out on top with a 5-3 win, courtesy of the 701 game, in what was a superb night of entertainment. Picassos, looking for their first win of the season, had Waterfall on the canvas but could not finish the job as the visitors took the final game to make it 4-4. In a mid-week catch-up game, Bar 180 B travelled to Nauta campsite and came away 6-2 winners against Nutty Nautas. And they then secured their second win of the week, taking the trebles to secure a 5-3 victory over an unfortunate Playgirls team. Sadly, Nutty Nautas’ position didn’t improve because they were beaten 6-2 by the titlechasing Legends. Marilyn’s A stay top of the league, following a great night of banter and darts as they travelled to Nauta Nomads and came away with a 6-2 success. Marilyn’s B repeated the same score at home against Lady

Macs, but it didn’t reflect the close games. Clouseaus, from Palm Mar, thought they were in for a share of the points, but Ourplace Breakaways took the trebles

for a 5-3 outcome. That leaves Clouseaus still looking for their first win in this campaign, along with Bar Leones, who at least claimed a 4-4 draw against The Red Devils.

This week sees Picassos sponsor the ladies’ and gents’ singles tournaments, so good luck to all taking part.

y turns town red!

“Aberdeen had been good to me, with an interestfree loan to buy a house, and the transfer fee was

a fantastic deal for them. “All was good at first, under manager Harry Catterick, but he had a heart attack

and was replaced by Billy Bingham. And, let’s just say, we never saw eye to eye.” Eddie Turnbull, then with Hibernian, threw Joe a lifeline, and his most memorable achievement for them was a hat-trick in their 6-3 League Cup defeat by Celtic. The lure of Aberdeen drew Joey back under manager Ally McLeod, igniting his career as he drove them to three Cup Finals, an extratime 2-1 win over Celtic being the only win. By now he was known as King Joey, and King of the Beach End, at their Pittodrie ground. And a few songs at Zizzi from the Tenerife Dons referred to his

cult status, and a liking for the odd drink or two. Joey´s Scotland career included a goal on his debut, and it ended with a run-out against Iran in the 1978 World Cup Finals in Argentina, under McLeod. In between, he was given a lifetime ban, along with Arthur Graham, after an incident in a Denmark nightclub, but the ban was lifted after a year. “It was one of those wrongplace -at-the -wrong-time moments,” he said, “The two of us, with Willie Young and Billy Bremner, had been allowed out by Ally after the late game … it got a bit lively and a light was broken.” With his club-record 205

goals, Joey is a popular host at Legends Lounge, at Aberdeen´s ground, and a focal point for the Aberdeen Community Trust. And in that role, he accepted 815 euros, raised by the generosity of Zizzi Bar’s regulars, through the sale of Dons’ memorabilia. “We help people with handicaps and illness in the Aberdeen area, because the club is a big part of the community,” he said proudly. On the night, the TV link delivered a 1-1 home European draw with Siroki Brijeg, of Herzegovinia, but the mood was upbeat, with the away leg to come. And anyway, there´s never a dull moment when King Joey’s around!
