Brazen thieves baffle the cops There has been no set pattern, except that three of the pharmacies up North were around the La Laguna area. That is where the latest instalment of thefts took place, in which two pharmacies were targeted this week. A business in Tacoronte, next to La Laguna, was robbed on Monday by a trio of men, who smashed a sidewindow to gain entry. They stole a large sum of cash, as well as many pharmaceutical drugs, before driving off in a car, heading towards El Ortigal. The following day, thieves, wearing hooded jackets and armed with large knives, held up the staff in a chemist at San Miguel de Geneto, also in the La Laguna municipality, at around 8pm. Workers there said the gang stole items from the company, and also helped themselves to personal belongings of the staff, who were then locked inside the premises, while the robbers fled. The entire episode lasted just minutes, but it left the employees in shock. Police and Guardia Civil officers are still hunting for the gangs. Meanwhile, in February, a security camera captured images of an armed robbery
at Los Realejos pharmacy, also close to La Laguna. It took place at 4.40pm, when a man closed in on the shop assistant, with what appeared to be a knife in his hand. He was wearing gloves, plus a hat and scarf, which masked his face, to render him non-recognisable. A girl, working there at the time, was the first to be approached by the masked man, who demanded money from the till. But the terrified youngster ran to the back of the pharmacy, out of the way. Instead, a female colleague, working alongside her, handed over the money. The individual then left the premises, smartly, without injuring the staff or damaging the premises. Shortly afterwards, towards the end of February, and down South in Adeje, a chemist on the main street of Calle Grande was burgled, during the early hours. According to sources, the front doors were forced open to gain access. Yet the thieves gained entry to the premises without being noticed, by using technology which enabled them to disarm the alarm system. They escaped with around 900 euros in cash and a computer, along with several pharmaceutical drugs.
Is this really the finale for ETA’s terrorist group? ETA, the Basque terrorist organisation, is planning to disband, formally, and will announce the news in public in Bayonne, southern France, during the first weekend in May. The separatists, who have not carried out any armed attacks since summer 2009, and whose last major bomb blast was on 30th December, 2006, at Madrid airport’s T4 car park, will call a press conference today (Friday). Standing alongside officials will be the para-political association Bake Bidea, in Iparralde, south-western France, when ETA will “announce an event of international importance” in Bayonne on 5th May. ETA says various institutions, including the Basque regional government, unions and political parties, will be invited to the Bayonne announcement. Today’s press conference will be presided by Bake Bidea, part of the Social Forum and the International Contact Group (GIC), with Raymond Kendall at the helm. Although the exact terminol-
Going bananas over the biggest drug haul of all THERE are drug stories, and drug stories, but this one surely tops the lot! The biggest-ever shipment of cocaine being smuggled into Europe, worth hundreds of millions of euros, has been seized in Algeciras. And one of the arrested men is, reportedly, a Guardia Civil officer! Nearly 9,000 tonnes of the drug, hidden in a boat transporting bananas from Colombia, were intercepted by the Guardia at the Bay of Gibraltar port. Six suspects, four in Spain and two in France, were arrested for their involvement in the drug-
trafficking gang. The cocaine was hidden in 1,080 boxes of bananas, and officials found a whopping 8,740 tonnes. Juan Ignacio Zoido, Spain’s Interior Minister, said: “It is the biggest seizure of cocaine, in a container, made so far in Europe.” The bumper haul followed an international investigation, carried out by the Colombian Government

and Europol. And once it had been uncovered, researchers were led to an industrial warehouse in Malaga, where the illegal operation was being carried out. Colombian officials revealed that the shipment belonged to the notorious Gulf Clan, the country’s most-powerful drug-trafficking group. Needless to say, the investigation is continuing.
ogy, used by ETA to explain the Bayonne conference, is not clear, it points strongly towards the cell’s decision to dissolve. The Basque Country regional government says it will not “get carried away with speculation”, but once ETA reveals its decision, it will “evaluate it accordingly”. Regional TV channel ETB announced last week that ETA appeared to be planning to break up on 5th May. Meanwhile, 11 days ago, Arnaldo Otegi, leader of EH Bildu, the Basque reunification political party, announced in Bayonne that the terror organisation would “take fresh steps in the forthcoming weeks”. Otegi’s comments came on the first anniversary of ETA’s formal disarmament, which was on 8th April, 2017. ETA has been around since the early 1970s, and this decade and the 1980s were its most active, with literally thousands of shootings and bombings, leading to hundreds of deaths. They targeted authorities frequently, including the Guardia Civil and politicians,
as well as tourist hotspots, to ensure their attacks were as newsworthy as possible. Violent action in the summer of 2002 included a major blast in the Guardia Civil living quarters in Santa Pola (Alicante province), where the six-year-old daughter of an officer was killed, and a carbombing in Gandia (Valencia province). Attacks the following summer included blasts at hotels in Alicante and Benidorm, and then, in January 2005, ETA bombed Hotel Port Dénia in the town of the same name on the Alicante province coast. A waitress suffered minor injuries, but nobody was hurt – largely because of ETA’s misunderstanding of the differences between Spanish and British culture. The bomb was set to go off in the dining hall at 3pm, when the terrorists thought the guests would be at lunch. But the holiday-makers were all from the UK and had long since finished eating by then, which meant the explosion happened in an empty room.
Spain finances not as healthy as it believes SPAIN will not meet its deficit targets for this year or the next, predicts international body IMF, headed by Christine Lagarde. It has forecast that the country will end 2018 with a 2.5% deficit, which will be 0.3% away from its 2.2% target. Meanwhile, Lagarde predicts it will have a 2.1% deficit next year, which is well off the 1.3%, recorded in the country’s budget stability plan. The disappointment came after the Bank of Spain and the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF), both doubted the government’s forecasts, predicting a 0.3% deviation for 2018 as well. While Mariano Rajoy’s Spanish Government has insisted economic growth will meet the targets, the IMF has warned of too many toxic assets, which
could risk another crisis. The IMF’s forecasts are not positive on public debt, either. The agency believes that debt, as a percentage of GDP, will sit at 96.7% by the end of 2018, in line with the Government’s forecast. But the IMF estimates that its reduction will be so slow that, in 2023, it will still be at 90.9% of GDP. Debt is one of the main threats to the Spanish economy, which has been pointed out, regularly, by the IMF, European Commission and the Bank of Spain.

THE Playa del Duque Norte beach, in Costa Adeje’s El Beril, reopened on Monday after an extensive reformation, costing around two million euros. The project was funded by CIO, the Compania de las Islas Occidentals, and the new-look, 400m stretch comprises brown sand and sea access for bathers with special mobility needs, as well as new shower and shade zones. Alongside the existing area, the entire beach now stretches for 1.3km, and the new concession is held by Sociedad Urbanizadora El Beril SA. The inauguration ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Provincial Government sub-delegate Guillermo Díaz Guerra; Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso; Cristóbal de la Rosa, regional Deputy Minister for tourism; José Manuel Fojo Barroso, Provincial Coasts Department head; Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and Adeje Urbanism Councillor Ermitas Moreira, as well as Urban Technician UbertoUberto Rodríguez and CIO President Francisco Javier Zamorano. Díaz Guerra welcomed the “effort made by the CIP” on this important part of the zone, which also creates jobs locally. And proud Cabildo President Alonso said: “The opening of the Bahía del Duque marks a change in the focus of development of the tourism model here in Tenerife.

El Beril’s beach reopens, and it’s better than ever “Adeje Council has also worked to consolidate the tourism development model, which we see the fruit of today, with a new beach, and hotels undergoing renovation.”
“Adeje Council has also worked to consolidate the tourism development model, which we see the fruit of today, with a new beach, and hotels undergoing renovation. “This enables the destination to remain competitive, thanks to the quality on offer, which, in turn, works to reinforce client loyalty… and all done within sustainable criteria.” Cristóbal de la Rosa gave an assurance that “this kind of initiative improves
the quality of the tourism offer, as much for visitors as residents. “And, thanks to the cooperation between private and public bodies, we can ensure that this part of the coast is also more accessible to more people.” Adeje Mayor Rodríguez Fraga added: “We have incorporated new infrastructures during a process of renovation and reinvestment, to work to maintain our position as a leading destination, and improve
the beach for Adeje residents, as well as our visitors. “The success of the project shows, yet again, what can be achieved when public and private bodies work together.” CIO President Zamorano said: “The Playa del Duque Norte meets the needs of the residents and visitors for a larger beach, with excellent services and comfort levels. “The new beach contributes to the improving destination, giving added value to the zone, and Adeje in general. “For CIO, this is another chapter in our commitment to continue to invest in the development of a topquality, tourism resort. “The fact that this is happening when we are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the opening of Hotel Bahía del Duque is
a great source of pride.” The reformation project followed lines of sustainable development and environmental protection, taking care to preserve the dikes that continue to protect the zone. Also, there are now three distinct access lines to the beach for special-needs visitors and bathers, with pathways connecting to the sea. A series of palm trees have also been planted to add extra, natural shade, to parts of the beach. Showers and foot-rinse zones are now installed at each beach entrance/exit point, along with wooden walkways and recycling rubbish bins. There is also a sun-bathing zone, with shade and showers for those with mobility challenges, and the beach has a lifeguard service, sunbeds and parasols.

Thoughtless mum robbed of the car… and her child A SPEEDY car thief wasted no time when he spotted a woman leaving her vehicle at the side of the Avenida Juan Carlos 1st, in Los Cristianos, on Sunday, with the engine running. And even the sight of a six-year-old in the rear seat, as he drove off, didn’t phase him. He simply lifted the boy out carefully, at a bus stop just around the corner, and left him unharmed, near the Apolo Centre, just 200m from where he had stolen the Citroën Berlingo. Fortunately, another driver witnessed the incident and decided to follow the thief. A minute or so later, the delighted driver appeared, holding the child’s hand and heading towards the nowhysterical mother. The relieved mum, from the Santa Cruz area of Icod de los Vinos, reported the incident to the police immediately. She told them that she had decided to double-park her car near the Los Cristianos taxi rank,
in Los Cristianos, opposite the bus station. She had left the engine running and the car unlocked, with instructions to her youngster to stay in the car. Her intention was to scamper across the road to drop something off to a friend, and return immediately. But just as the woman was moving away from her car, she heard the doors being slammed and saw a stranger sitting in the driving seat. The thief drove away quickly, heading in the direction of the language school, with the frantic mum chasing the car, screaming and shouting that her son was inside. The driver, who came to her rescue, had been queueing in traffic and, fortunately, decided to follow the car. He saw the thief clearly, as he deposited the child, then climbed back in the car and sped off. But there has been no happy ending, yet! Local and National Police, who were provided with descriptions of the man by the driver and her saviour, are still searching for the vehicle.

Grandma’s body hacked to pieces! HUMAN remains have been found by a Spanish family, renting a holiday flat in Govan, southwest Glasgow.
And detectives investigating the death of grandmother Julie Reilly, 47, (pictured) who went missing in February, have arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion of murder. The police probe took a shocking twist after locals claimed that “body parts were found in gardens” on a Govan street. In fact, wild animals have scattered body parts through a street where a “gnawed human hip joint” was found in a garden, and a fox was spotted carrying a severed hand. The grisly discoveries were made as detectives continue to probe the murder of the missing grandmother. They are also appealing for information about two missing suitcases, believed to be connected to Ms Reilly’s death.
The Glasgow grandma disappeared after missing several appointments. A spokesman said: “Unfortunately, officers can now confirm that Julie Reilly is deceased, and they are treating her death as murder.” On Tuesday, forensic experts erected a blue tent in the overgrown garden, between two houses on Drumoyne Drive, just a few streets from where Julie lived, on Shieldhall Road. A neighbour there said: “I heard that the torso was found in the garden.” And a woman, working in a local business, said: “It’s quite scary. We’ve heard
all about it in the last couple of months… everybody knows everybody here. “There are four flats being used for holiday rentals, and a Spanish family discovered body parts. A leg was found in the street where we saw the police combing the gardens on Saturday.” She added: “It’s sad, but I hope it gives the family some closure.” A bouquet of roses has been tied to railings close to the nearby nursery school, with an attached note, saying: “From just one of the families who have suffered a similar fate. May you rest in peace, Julie.” Julie’s mum, 69-year-old Margaret Hanlon, from Auchinleck, in East Ayrshire, last heard from her daughter on Christmas Day. The flat was thought, previously, to have been rented out by Airbnb, but a spokesman said the lettings company had no reservations at properties in or around the area.

NEWS IN BRIEF Ferry’s Atlantic breakdown
THE Armas Volcan Ferry came to a standstill in the Atlantic Ocean on Monday afternoon, because there was a technical problem with the engines. The ferry was carrying out a routine crossing, between Las Palmas and Santa Cruz, the respective capitals of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. It happened at around three in the afternoon, and, after reporting the incident to the coastguard, a rescue vessel was sent out to assess the situation. Fortunately, it was under control by the time the coastguards arrived. The ferry captain decided to continue with his journey, powered by just one fully-functioning engine, and arrived in Santa Cruz, two hours late, at about 10pm.
Dead man found by brothers
THE body of Anibal Abreu Martin, a 37-year-old man, who went missing four days earlier, was discovered by his brothers last Friday in a Tacoronte ravine, in the Santa Cruz borough. A court order was given for his body to be removed, and it was later transferred to the Forensic Institute for an autopsy to discover the cause of his death.
Youngster hurt in crash
Three people, including an eight-year-old boy, were injured in a TF-1 car crash in the Candelaria area on Monday morning at around eight. Canarian Emergency Service ambulances attended the scene, and medics, after stabilising the trio, transferred them to Candelaria Hospital. The youngster suffered an abdominal problem, as well as injuries to his upper limbs, while a 34-year-old woman had suffered chest and back injuries. In addition, a man aged 46, hurt his spine.
Double bus-crash chaos
A CRASH involving two buses in Madrid left 20 people injured, including three in a serious condition. A six-year-old girl also suffered whiplash injuries in the collision, in which one bus ran into the back of the other for unknown reasons. Most of the injured suffered whiplash, minor cuts and bruises. But seven passengers were transferred by ambulance to hospital, including one of the drivers, who had a chest injury. Guardia Civil officers are investigating the cause of the collision.
The upwardly-mobile art, in Los Cristianos!
SUN, sea, and tradition… it’s enough to inspire anyone. But Arona Council is adding more uplifting reminders of the town’s beauty, in the beating heart of the community.
As part of the annual Urban Festival, three Tenerife artists were commissioned to decorate the otherwise-drab areas with bright, vibrant murals. The two main features are concrete stairways, linking Avenida de Suecia with the pedestrianised shopping avenue just below. At the port-road end, Roberto Rodriguez has transformed a wide, shallow area to show birds, flowers, and a traditional group of houses. And at the other end, the steeper, longer steps, next to the church square, show the old beach being enjoyed by sun-bathers. The edges of the steps make up the picture, so you’ll have to take time to adjust your viewing position to get the full effect.
The different perspectives are part of the invitation to linger, and appreciate the art, together with the natural charms of Los Cristianos, which they represent. Alba Gonzalez took on the week-long task of creating this piece, and he has added invitations in English and Spanish to sit and take in the full spread of the picture. Liberal use of primer layers should ensure the artwork stands the test of time, as well as the passage of many feet. And Juan Carlos Sanchez is adding a couple of wall murals further up, in the old part of the town. Dacil Leon, Arona’s Economic
Promotion Councillor, views the project as another example of the local government’s involvement in all aspects of daily life. “This will extend the artistic stimulation of the resident and tourist view of Arona, adding to its attractions of leisure, sun, and beach,” he said. Look around, when you walk through Los Cristianos, and you will see other examples of urban art, which will add a smile to your day. The arches of the tunnel linking the beaches, and the sea-life mural on the harbour wall, have already enriched daily lives, and have graced many visitors’ photographs.

Down-to-earth flight travellers so relieved PASSENGERS travelling from Barcelona to Tenerife North Airport with Vueling last Saturday night took days to recover from shock. The pilot had to abort the landing when a sudden wind began to blow across the runway, with gusts, seemingly, appearing from nowhere. One passenger, a Tenerife woman named Bergoña,
said she saw the runway lights through a window, and realised the plane was swaying from left to right as the pilot tried to get into the correct landing position. She added that many passengers were clinging on to their seats until, suddenly, the engines went into full power, and the plane began to climb back up. Once the plane was stabilised, the captain told his 240 passengers that he took that decision because of strong cross-
winds on the landing path. The control tower confirmed with the captain that all the previous flights had landed normally, when weather conditions were normal, so the pilot went ahead with a second attempt to land the plane. The plane was silent, a complete hush, with nobody saying a word, although some people even prayed
to themselves as the pilot repositioned the plane, which began to move from side to side again. By this time, the passengers had become extremely nervous, with some even crying. But after what seemed an eternity, the plane touched down at 11pm, half-an-hour later than the scheduled arrival time, although the landing
was extremely abrupt. But passengers were overjoyed to get off the flight, which, said many, was “a nightmare” from start to finish, with constant turbulence throughout the journey. But, thanks to the quickthinking pilot, and in-flight technology, they landed safely, and a disaster was avoided.
Brakes on a break-up?
Small parcels… larger than life! A SPECIAL show is being staged at the exhibition salon in Adeje Cultural Centre until 13th May, organised by the Tenerife Association of Parents of Premature Babies (APREMATE). The exhibition, under the title “nacidos muy pequeños, vidas muy grandes” (small at birth, large lives) runs from Monday to Friday, 9am-9pm. It features a series of 14 photographs of children, between the ages of two
and five, alongside a picture of them when they were born, prematurely. There is also information about the (APREMATE) association. Organisers say the exhibition serves to make the public more aware of premature birth and babies, and of the existence of the association. It also highlights the work its members undertake to help other parents, who find themselves in what can be an extremely-challenging situation.

THERE was some confusion in Calle Pedro Poggio, a street in the La Palma capital, Santa Cruz, when neighbours and onlookers were shocked to see a car parked up, with what looked like graffiti painted all over.
What was more astonishing was that it appeared as though someone was proclaiming his or her love for somebody. On closer inspection, though, it looked more like the end of a relationship,
and that one of the parties couldn’t or didn’t want to accept the break up. Messages such as “I refuse to let this end”, and “Without you, I am nothing”, were written all over the car in red pen.

Penguin Day is so vital to endangered species LORO Parque celebrated World Penguin Day on Wednesday, to raise awareness about the worrying situation of these animals in nature. During the entire week, from Monday until the weekend, the park has been, and will be, promoting educational and awareness activities, both in its facilities and through its social-media channels. The campaign is focused, specifically, on the Humboldt Penguin, a species which faces severe nature threats, and is represented in the park in a carefullycreated exposition at Planet Penguin. Wednesday was a day of special relevance, not only because it coincided with the migration of the Adelie penguins from Antarctica to the North, but also because, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), out of the 18 species of penguins in existence, 10 are considered endangered, to one degree or another. The threats that these
charismatic animals face in the wild are quite diverse: decreased fish availability because of overfishing; climatic changes; seawater pollution or unsustainable tourism practices. And all these dangers are causing the penguin populations to diminish, drastically. Loro Parque’s PlanetPenguin exposition is home to five penguin species: Humboldt, Papua penguin, King penguin, Northern Rock-
hopper and Chinstrap penguin. All of them are playing an important role of ambassadors of their counterparts, in nature, through raising awareness among the public about the harsh conditions the animals face in the wild. This year also, Loro Parque has decided to join the campaign of Sphenisco, an organisation that advocates the “Humboldt Penguins Protection”. It also dedicates its efforts
to drawing attention to the situation of this species in Peru and northern Chile, where its populations are becoming increasingly threatened. Loro Parque’s Humboldt exhibition recreates, to every detail, the rocky habitat of these animals and, thus, contributes to educational activities. It gives Loro Parque visitors an opportunity to learn more about the characteristics of the animals, and the threats for their survival in their natural habitats. Such awareness activities, in their turn, contribute to the penguin conservation. Athough the number of atrisk penguin species is quite alarming, experts maintain a positive prognosis for the future. For that, they must thank the continuous and growing efforts of the conservationists, as well as the enhancement of the protected marine territories, which will help preserve the endangered populations. The role of wildlife conservation centres, such as Loro Parque, along with organisations such as Sphenisco, is fundamental in making this necessary change a reality.

Amazon under fire after 100 sackings
UNIONS in Spain have accused Amazon of sacking more than 100 workers, because they went on strike for better working conditions. The CGT labour union condemned the US company’s largest logistic centre in Spain, saying that failing to renew the temporary workers’ contracts was politically motivated. Workers first went on strike on 21-22 March, although some turned up to work, for fear of reprisals. Now, just days before the next strike, more than 100 employees at the San Fernando de Henares centre, near Madrid, have been let go. Employees have also complained that the company usually gives early notice when there’s going to be lay-offs, but that this time ‘silence reigned’. “Not Friday night, not Saturday, neither Sunday: it’s been this morning (Monday). The Whatsapp groups are on fire because
our colleagues have been confirming their dismissals,” said one worker. In its defence, the e-commerce firm said it hired temporary workers to handle high-demand seasons, and then turned their contracts into permanent ones, if possible. “Precisely due to this seasonal nature, it’s not possible to turn all contracts into indefinite ones,” said a spokesman, adding that the mass firing happened because of a drop in demand. “Since the beginning of our operations in Spain, we have turned hundreds of
temporary contracts into permanent ones,” said a spokesperson. But workers, who have been with the company for a while, argue that such lay-offs are unusual for this time of year, dismissing Amazon’s “excuses”. The employees claimed the company is trying to cheapen labour, and eliminate guarantees for a salary increase, as well as getting rid of protection clauses, in case of temporary disability. Workers are now planning strikes on the company’s busiest days, including Fridays.
Who’s lost that grand feeling?
AN honest individual in Albacete, Spain, who found almost 2,000 euros lying in the street in a roll, has handed it in to the police. If the owner does not claim it within two years, the finder can claim it, legally. The man took
the money straight to the city’s National Police station, and cops are now are trying to trace the person who mislaid it. They suspect that hundreds of people could claim the jackpot, and, said José Francisco Roldán, Chief Commissioner of the National Police in Albacete: “The owner will have to explain many details, and prove it is his, or hers.”

Tragic brothers perish in the sea
THE body of a Swedish man, who went missing last week after falling into the sea at El Pris, off the Adeje coastline, was found this week by a helicopter team. Three people, including his brother, had jumped in to try to save the man, who lived in Los Cristianos, as he struggled against the currents. But the trio lost sight of him as he was swept away. Tragically, for the Swedish family, the man’s brave brother, on holiday from Sweden with their sister and his girlfriend, managed to climb out of the water, with his two companions. But he had already suffered a heart attack, while battling the currents himself, and was pronouced dead when ambulance medics arrived. Meanwhile, the body of the missing brother, was found around Guia de Isora’s Erques Ravine on Monday by a search-and-rescue helicopter crew. An anonymous call, made the same day at around 2.30pm, reporting sightings of what appeared to be a body floating around the coast. The crew scanned the area and discovered it, facedown in the sea. One of the rescuers was winched down to the surface to recover the corpse, which was then transported to the airport, where the Guardia Civil, along with a judge, proceeded with legal procedures.

The green roots of a growing borough ADEJE’S department of parks and gardens, under the leadership of Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, has published details of the work being carried out in the borough. Its services department, EMSA, tends to 205 hectares of public green spaces, and the 2018 budget is being used to improve and maintain the public parks and green sections. Cllr Rivero Vargas said: “They are very much appreciated by our residents and tourists.” And, with seasonal flowers in certain parts of the borough, forming part of the overall image of Adeje. the department teams are also charged with plant care and pruning. “There has been a recent improvement in the service, and
the key has been the qualifications of those working in the area. It is divided into 17 distinct sections, given the varied geography of Adeje. They are allocated the correct machinery, and they have the expertise needed for each zone.” She added that over the year, given the work necessary, the team had increased
Will Banksy own up to Spanish flourish? RESIDENTS of a small Spanish town believe they have the country’s first example of the legendary Banksy’s graffiti. The wall, in Galicia’s Ferrol de Coruña, has received the treatment, in the style of the British artist, in a space that has been reserved for him for years. The piece, which depicts two Guardia Civil officers kissing, appears to have been signed off by the world-famous enigma, whose work sells for millions of euros at auction. It follows the Meninas de Canido initiative, sponsored by Estrella beer, which was launched several years ago, pleading for Banksy to use their walls for a new piece. The spot, alongside No.23 on Calle Muiño de Vento, was set aside
for the British artist, as part of a neighbourhood regeneration plan, which began eight years ago. Last September, 35,000 people attended the eighth annual urban art festival there. A spokesman said: “We do not know if the work, which has appeared in the reserved space, is original.” If confirmed by Banksy, it would be the first of its kind in Spain, after one, found in San Sebastian, was erased, after not receiving confirmation of its authorship. Guardia Civil seemed pleased to be part of Spain’s potentiallyfirst Banksy. “Well, it would be nice to be the protagonists of the first Banksy in Spain, don’t you think?”, it Tweeted to its 1.2 million followers.
from 47 to 62 trained individuals, with more jobs being created in the division. To make sure the work is up to required standards, these workers are also given on-going training in relevant areas, including improvements in gardening skills, machine op-
eration and fumigation treatments, as well as tree and palm pruning, etc. Proper use of some of the new machinery also means less time used in public disruption, during pruning operations. In the playgrounds, the team have been
carrying out cleaning and pest-removals, as well as inspections and repairs of any playground installations. They also work directly with other teams on public municipal events, such as Easter Week, local fiestas, etc. While the crews are dedicated to keeping the different neighbourhoods in the borough looking good, Cllr Rivero Vargas said one of the areas under constant review was the cemetery. “It’s because we understand that people want to make sure their loved ones are in a place which is well looked after, and we take special care with the gardens here, taking note of people’s wishes.” She added. “They want, and have asked for, a space that exudes peace, tranquillity… a place of retreat.”

Deadly painkiller that kills, rather than cures A LARGE Costa Blanca health network has issued a warning about a painkiller, which has affected countless Britons and Irish. It comes after Cristina Garcia del Campo, an Alicantebased medical and legal translator, began researching Nolotil. And, she says, it has led to “the biggest drug probe” in Spanish history, adding: “It has been a long time in coming and, by raising so much awareness, I am sure lives have already been saved.” She has compiled around 100 case studies, after conducting her own, dedicated research, and referencing a 1,000-strong petition, launched by The Olive Press. The online newspaper’s probe, into the mysterious deaths of expats from the lethal drug, was launched last year. “Spain wants to help,” said Cristina, who has qualifications in medicine and pharmaceuticals. “I have had support from every healthcare professional I have spoken to.” Nolotil, also known as Metamizol, is banned in the UK, the US and most of Europe, yet it is still one of the most popular pain-killers in Spain. The most-feared side-effect is agranulocytosis, a severe and rapid drop in white blood cells, which leaves patients unable to fight infections. In a breakthrough decision, Hospital Denia, Marina Salud, has issued a notice to medical staff to avoid prescribing Nolotil to AngloSaxon and Scandinavian patients. A spokesperson said: “As Marina Salud is conscious of the cautions in the United States, the UK and Scandinavia, regarding the general administration of Metamozil, and through the high percentage of British and Scandinavian residents
The Olive Press launched an investigation against the pain-killer, after learning that dozens of expats had died, or been brought to the brink of death, by the commonlyprescribed drug. in Marina Alta, it has issued a notice, not a ban, to its medical staff, for them, preferably, to administer a different painkiller as a substitute to Metamizol.” The integrated health network includes one hospital (Hospital Dénia), as well as 12 integrated and regular health centres and 34 doctors’ surgeries in Marina Alta. A spokesperson for Hospital Denia, Marina Salud, said: “As we are a public hospital, we operate in line with the directives of the Regional Ministry of Health of Valencia (Conselleria de Sanidad de la Generalitat Valenciana) for the 24 health departments of the Valencian Health System. “In Spain, the authorisation, or not, of any medication, is ordered by the Spanish Medicine Agency (Agencia Española del Medicamento) for the whole country.” The Olive Press launched an investigation against the painkiller last August, after learning that dozens of expats had died, or been brought to the brink of death, after their immune systems were, allegedly, destroyed by the commonlyprescribed drug. Three families have spoken
of how their relatives died, unnecessarily, in excruciating pain. But authorities refused to take their claims seriously, despite the evidence being backed up by local doctors. “The Spanish don’t read English papers, and no one notified their cases to the right place, so how could doctors know?” queried Cristina. The translator realised something was wrong after working with an Irish expat, who suddenly became critically ill with sepsis and necrotising fasciitis (a serious bacterial infection beneath the skin) after
taking the drug. He later died. Cristina, who noticed that a large number of other English and Irish patients had been suffering with sepsis at hospitals along the Costa Blanca, said: “I thought this couldn’t be normal.” And after looking at the notes of patients, she found that each had one thing in common: they were all taking Nolotil. Although manufacturers list side-effects such as agranulocytosis, necrotising fasciitis and sepsis, they are considered “very rare”, affecting one in every 10,000. The figures did not seem to add up to Cristina, in relation to the many she had encountered, so she set about compiling her own research. But no information existed in Spanish media. But she came across an Olive Press article about Irish expat Billy Smyth, who died after taking Nolotil in 2016. “I was in disbelief,” said Cristina, who lived in the UK for 18 years. “I thought this must have been well-known, and that someone was doing something about it. Except it wasn’t, and I felt I had to inform Spain about it.” After months of tireless research and sleepless nights, she produced the evidence in front of Pharmacovigilance (Farmacovigilancia) in Valencia, a drug-safety organi-
sation, which monitors and prevents adverse effects. Immediately, the group classified the information as “of exceptional importance”. Now, according to the translator, government bodies, in addition to the General Directorate of Pharmacy and Healthcare Products (Dirección General de Farmacia y Productos Sanitarios) and also Pharmacovigilance, are carrying out “the biggest national study ever into medication” across 17 regions. Cristina says that medical professionals now believe there could be an enzyme lacking, or a genetic difference, which means Anglo Saxons and Scandinavians are at higher risk than Spaniards. On hearing the news, Marbella-based Graeme Ward, who, tragically, lost his wife Mary to Nolotil in 2006, said: “Without Nolotil, my wife would still be alive today. It’s high time for it to be banned, and the manufacturers should be ashamed of themselves. But I’m so pleased something is finally being done.” Cristina is still urging expats and holiday-makers affected by Nolotil to message her at cristinadrugresearch@ gmail.com. Neither the General Directorate of Pharmacy and Healthcare Products in Valencia, nor the Spanish Medicines Agency, have commented on the investigation.
Kids’ punch-up to end in court
LOCAL Police, on a routine patrol in Santa Cruz, were informed of a disturbance outside the Alcalde Bernabe Rodriguez secondary school, near Avenida San Sebastian. As they neared the school, they came across several
minors involved in a gang fight. When the police approached the group to defuse the situation, they saw two youngsters brawling. One was injured, and bleeding heavily. The cops requested an ambulance immediately, and, while asking the other youngster, aged 16, to identify himself, he tried to run away. But one of the officers attempted to restrain him,
and the boy punched him several times. The 16-yearold was then arrested. The police gathered little information from other youngsters watching the brawl, but a teacher from their secondary school helped them out. The wounded teenager was accompanied by the police to a local medical centre, where he was treated for his injuries. Both minors are waiting to appear before a judge.

Missing woman: suspect released THE family of Lisa Brown, the Scottish mother who went missing in Spain more than two years ago, has spoken of their shock when learning that a judge had “frozen” the case.
Judge Garcia Ramila shelved the case against prime suspect Simon Corner, at the request of state prosecutors. He told the hearing: “This court has serious doubts that Simon Corner is the person responsible for the crimes of homicide or unlawful detention, which are being investigated.” The shock move means that 35-year-old Corner, will not, as expected, be extradited to Spain. In fact, he will be freed from the London prison, in which he has been held since his arrest last week at Heathrow Airport, on a European Arrest Warrant. Lisa’s sister, Helen Jordan, said: “We are still shocked that this decision has been made after all the hard work, but it’s not over, by any means. “We were actually speechless when we heard the news. We don’t take anything for granted, but we didn’t expect this.” She added: “This is a set-back, but it won’t stop us. The investigation will still be continuing, to find the truth. We’re thinking positively… we have to, or we would have given up long ago.” Lisa, aged 32 when she vanished, was last seen at her home in Guadiaro, near San Roque, on 4th November, 2015. The alarm was raised when she failed to collect her son, Marco,
then aged eight, from school. Investigators believed a “violent episode” had taken place, prior to her disappearance. Lisa, originally from Alexandria, in Dunbartonshire, worked in Gibraltar, and detectives suspect that she was killed. But her body has never been found. Corner, a Liverpool-born yachtdealer, was held in Denmark on a European Arrest Warrant, then extradited to Spain after fleeing the country, in the wake of Lisa’s disappearance. A year ago, he was freed from an Algeciras prison on bail, but, reportedly, he broke the terms of his agreement by failing to present himself at a Costa del Sol police station last month. A European Arrest warrant was then issued by the Spanish police.
Island bans flat-owners from renting to tourists MALLORCA, capital of the Balearic Islands, is set to become Spain’s first area to ban owners from letting out their apartments or flats to tourists. The decision, by Palma City Hall, will affect all apartments from July onwards. Palma Mayor Antoni Noguera said the ban was to “protect residents” from soaring prices, and a shortage of long-term lets. A study by the Palma Government found rental prices in the capital had risen by 40% in recent years, which makes the Mallorcan capital the second-most-expensive rental market, after Barcelona. Deputy Mayor Jose Hila said: “The trend is transforming European cities, from one day to the next. We have to bring order.”
The rental-market analysis uncovered a link between the holiday lettings’ phenomenon and the rise in residential rent prices. Almost 50% of holiday lets were occupied by tourists for at least six months, hitting the long-term lettings’ market hard, said Palma officials. There were 20,000 unlicensed holiday lets in 2017, up 50% since 2015, compared with just 645 official lets. Exceptions to the ban include detached houses and chalets, but not properties in protected, rural areas, near the airport and industrial estates. A Government coalition, comprising the Partido Socialista (PSOE), Podemos and Mallorca’s Mes party, were approving the new law last night (Thursday). The Mayor, who says the decision is for the “general interest”, believes the decision could set a trend for other cities.

Solar boom on way
SOLAR power will be the most dominant form of energy in Spain by 2030, according to the country’s Industry Ministry.
It predicts overall savings of around 9.6bn euros on the current trajectory of renewable energy growth. The move to solar will also cut CO2 emissions by more than half, while extra revenue will come from selling energy to France. The most optimistic figures predict that solar will reach a total powerproduction capacity of 47.1 TWh by 2030, which will make it Spain’s biggest energy resource. It also means that renewable energy would supply 70% of the country’s electricity. Even in the most conservative forecast, solar will still be the biggest and cheapest power source in Spain by 2030, having 40 TWh power-production capacity. And renewable energy sources would still represent 67% of the country’s electricity. The news follows a plunge in the price of solar panels and lower construction costs, which has brought investors back to the Spanish solar market. Iberdrola, Spain’s largest power company, last month launched a solar project in March, with a capacity of 425 megawatts. Just a few weeks ago, Spanish renewable energy firm Cox Energy signed a deal for the construction of 495 megawatts of capacity in Spain, and another 165 megawatts in neighbouring Portugal, adding up to a 400m-euro investment.

There’s no persecution of the Catalans, says Spain’s Belgian voice CECILIA YUSTE, Spain’s diplomatic representative in Belgium, has denied accusations that her country is seeking to persecute those who hold pro-Catalan independence views. The ambassador wrote a piece in Belgium’s Frenchlanguage, daily newspaper, Le Soir, responding to charges of Spain’s heavy-handedness in the ongoing Cataluña situation. Her opinion piece followed Barcelona demonstrations, calling for freedom for the 16 people currently imprisoned, or attempting to avoid arrest, in connection with the push for the region’s independence. Yuste wrote: “Certain comments insist that political opinions may be subject to judicial persecution in Spain, in particular, towards those holding positions in favour of the independence of Cataluña.” The diplomat added that there were politicians in institutions across the country who held those views. And they were able to “freely” defend their ideas within the bounds of the law. Yuste said a solution to the political problem of the drive for Catalan secession from Spain could not be solved in the courts. “We are seeing a great social fracture in Cataluña at the moment,” she wrote. “A political problem cannot be solved by judicial means, and, likewise, a legal or judicial problem cannot be solved by political means. “Pretending otherwise can only lead to suspending the principle of the separation of powers. Together with respect for the law, these principles represent one of the foundations of democratic
states such as Belgium and Spain.” She added that court decisions, such as the one which ruled that the October referendum on Catalan independence was illegal, should be respected by all. The ambassador said the three pro-independence parties, which had the majority of seats in Cataluña’s Parliament, had “all the legitimacy” to form a government. She
added that they should select a candidate for President soon. Yuste’s comments followed demonstrations in Barcelona, which saw protestors take to the streets two Sundays ago, calling for charges against 16 pro-Catalan independence political figures to be dropped. Police estimates put attendances at those marches at around 315,000, while organis-
ers maintained that the number was closer to 750,000. Carles Puigdemont, the region’s former President, wrote on Twitter that the protest was a “civic and democratic” demonstration, adding: “We are European citizens, who just want to live in peace, free and without fear.” Puigdemont is currently on bail in Germany, on charges issued by Spain in relation to alleged rebellion and the misuse of public funds, in connection with last year’s independence push. He was previously living in Belgium after fleeing Spain, following the issue of a warrant for his arrest by his native country. A spokesperson for Puigdemont’s Together for Cataluña party said: “The marches were held because there are 16 people in prison, or in exile, for defending political ideas that represent 2,000,000 people.”
Runaway Brit paedo escapes jail sentence
A JUDGE has ruled that a convicted British paedophile, who sought refuge in Spain, will not be jailed because he has “resolved his issues”. Alan Grundy was given a 14-month suspended sentence at Bradford Crown Court after admitting three charges of creating offensive images and videos, and one of failing to notify police of a change in address. The case follows his recent arrest and extradition to the UK, on a European Arrest Warrant.
It is believed that he fled after 87 indecent images and two videos, featuring children, were found on his computer nearly three years ago. Grundy, of no fixed address, was found guilty of 21 offences in 2012, including making images of a paedophile nature. He was told then that he had to register any changes of name or address with police. But he vanished after being held, and he refused to comment when investigators seized a computer from a
Bradford property where he had been living, on 26th June, 2015. Prosecutor Paul Nicholson told the court that when police returned to the residence, “his mother said he had not lived at the address since he had been arrested. It turned out that he had taken himself abroad and gone to Spain.” Lawyer Tom Rushbrooke, defending, argued that Grundy, who had been suffering depression, had turned to alcohol at the time of his first arrest.

Biscuit trickster could be facing prison spell A YOUTUBER from Barcelona faces up to two years in prison after filming the moment he gave Oreo biscuits filled with toothpaste to a homeless man, before joking that they would make his teeth cleaner. The biscuits contain sugar, palm oil, and high fructose corn syrup, among other ingredients, and Kanghua Ren, 20, who has more than a million followers on the video-sharing platform, uploaded the footage in January. But he deleted it rapidly after receiving a wave of criticism by angry viewers. The video shows Ren, apparently, scraping the filling out of one of the biscuits and substituting it for toothpaste. He appears to repeat the “trick” with at least two others before placing them in their original packaging. The vlogger, originally from China, then filmed a street scene where he speaks in

Spanish to a 52-year-old Romanian man, named by authorities as Gheorge, sitting on the pavement. He hands over the biscuits and a 20-euro note before saying to the camera: “Maybe I’ve gone a bit far, but look at the positive side: this will help him clean his teeth. I think he hasn’t cleaned them since he became poor.” A court heard that Ren earned more than 2,000 euros from advertising linked to the video, after it attracted thousands of views and sparked a furious backlash, including a Change.org petition to shut down his channel.
Police quizzed the victim after being tipped off about the video, and he reportedly told them that he became sick and vomited five minutes later. Prosecutors said that Ren offered him 300 euros not to talk about the incident and “re-establish his image”, after he had deleted the clip and changed to a new channel. He had previously given sandwiches filled with cat excrement to elderly people and children, they added. Ren, charged with crimes against moral integrity, after being held and freed on bail, is still awaiting sentence.
A SCOTTISH travel agent has been ridiculed for using a picture of a Spanish beach to promote a lastminute caravan break… in Blackpool!
The advert’s main image features a Costa Brava cove, with crystal-clear waters, lapping a golden beach. Supporting photos even include a moonlit resort, plus two others, thought to be taken in Spain. But the deal itself describes a break in the Lancashire seaside town as follows: “Blackpool, Marton Mere. Deluxe two bedroom caravan. Self catering. Four
nights. June 18 2018. Includes one day access to pleasure beach. £365 total based on a family of four.” Sharp-eyed Glasgow woman Heather Reid spotted the ludicrous advert in the window of the unnamed Clydebank company, in West Dunbartonshire. She later tweeted the photo with the caption: “Travel agents in Clydebank are at it hahahaha is that pic supposed to be blackpool n am a cheryl cole lookalike anol hen [sic].” One Twitter user wrote: “Looks great wish I could go to Blackpool and work on my tan, would be fishing off that wee boat with a box of beer and my top off [sic].”

BoE comments prompt the GBP exchange-rate slump By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
DOUBTS over the prospect of a Bank of England (BoE) interest-rate hike have prompted volatility for pound exchange rates, with market focus generally returning to the subject of monetary policy.
This saw the GBP/USD exchange rate slump sharply from its recent high of 1.4372, to just 1.3947. The GBP/EUR exchange rate came under similar pressure, even though worries remain over the likely loss of momentum, within the Eurozone economy. The pound came under fresh pressure after March’s UK consumer price index fell short of forecast, easing from 2.7% to 2.5% on the year. As this takes inflation closer to the BoE’s 2% target, this weakening appears to limit the case for the central bank to raise interest rates again, in the
near future. Investors were further shaken by the latest commentary from BoE Governor Mark Carney, who took a rather dovish tone on the subject of monetary policy. With Carney appearing to talk down the prospect of a May, interestrate hike, GBP exchange rates naturally returned to a weaker footing, softening as markets unwound bets on the prospect of an imminent policy move. All in all, confidence in the outlook of the UK economy still looks distinctly limited at this stage, particularly
with the uncertainty of Brexit still hanging over markets. Demand for the euro, meanwhile, was weighed down by an unexpectedly-sharp contraction of the latest, German, ZEW, economic sentiment surveys. As the business-expectations index fell to a five-year low of -8.2, this encouraged investors to pile out of the single currency. This significant dip in sentiment did nothing to ease concerns over the outlook of the wider, Eurozone economy, or its ability to maintain its previous momentum, in the coming year.
Meanwhile, confidence in the prospect of a more-aggressive pace of Federal Reserve monetary tightening, and an uptick in US bond yields, offered support to the US dollar. Local elections in the UK could provoke some additional volatility for pound exchange rates, with political jitters still playing a role in market sentiment. Unless there are signs that the government is willing to reconsider its stance on the UK retaining membership of the customs union, even after Brexit, the upside potential of the pound is likely to be muted.
However, the key focus, in the weeks ahead, will be on May’s BoE policy meeting. If the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) opts to leave interest rates on hold for another month, GBP exchange rates could see some significant losses. Persistent dovishness from the European Central Bank (ECB), meanwhile, is expected to keep the euro on a generally-softer footing. As long as global geopolitical and trade tensions show no fresh signs of flaring up, the US dollar is likely to see limited vulnerability. Markets will also be watching the latest Federal Reserve policy meeting, keen to gauge the current outlook of policymakers. Vueling pilots stage strike for first time STRIKING pilots at a low-cost airline in Spain forced the cancellation of almost 250 flights on Wednesday and yesterday (Thursday), including some to the UK. Vueling operates flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Palma, Ibiza and Malaga from many British airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Edinburgh. A small number of UK flights at Gatwick and Luton are among those affected. But the Barcelonabased airline has stressed that 81% of flights will have operated normally, and that passengers on the cancelled flights will have been warned by email, or text message. It is the first Vueling pilots’
strike in the company’s history, but further 24-hour strikes are scheduled for Thursday and Friday. They will be called, only if SEPLA, the airline pilots’ union, and Vueling, owned by British Airways’ parent company International Airlines Group,
can reach an agreement. The argument concerns claimed breaches of employment contracts, and the airline’s refusal to guarantee greater growth in Spain than in its foreign bases. Vueling has around 1,000 pilots based in Spain, and
some 150 overseas. But it is feared that this could change as bases are moved abroad. Juan Manuel Redondo, head of Vueling’s trade-union section of SEPLA, said: “Now that Vueling is tripling its profits, and that there have been distributions of up to 100 million euros of dividends before results, the conditions for the pilots do not change.” He added: “It’s actually worse, because the company’s only offer, which, it says, has been rejected by 90% of the pilots, is a zero improvement, and even worsens the conditions of the previous agreement.” Vueling pilots claim that, on average, they receive 30% less than their main competitors, including Ryanair and easyJet. SEPLA says at least 30 pilots have already left the airline this year, along with the 90 who went in 2017.
“They do not want to be in the company, although it is a company with great potential,” acknowledged Redondo. Meanwhile, Spain’s airtraffic controllers are also threatening summer strikes, which would harm the peak holiday-travel season seriously, with delays and cancellations. Union members have voted to implement 24-hour stoppages from 20th June, if the number of ATC staff is not increased by the start of the summer season. Union members voted, overwhelmingly, last Friday to strike if Enaire, the company which manages them, does not increase the number of staff. The union issued a statement, predicting a summer “collapse” in Barcelona through the lack of controllers, and the constant traffic growth at El Prat airport.

Invitation to a Royal Wedding
Prince Harry’s Story: Four Royal Weddings…
Thursday 3rd May, ITV1, 21.00
Sunday 29th April, ITV1, 21.00 Prince Harry’s Story: Four Royal Weddings… charts Harry’s journey from a childhood touched by grief, through active service as a soldier in Afghanistan and his later international charity work, up to his upcoming wedding as Prince Charming to the girl of his dreams, through the prism of the most important turning points in his life – four Royal Weddings and the tragic death of his mother. This is Harry’s story told in a new and unique way, featuring stunning Royal footage, dramatic newsreel and insightful and entertaining commentary from Royal sources, historians, journalists and figures from throughout his life and career. Prince Harry’s Story: Four Royal Weddings… reveals how each event – the weddings of Charles & Diana, Charles & Camilla, William & Kate and now Harry’s own, alongside the funeral of his mother Diana – have helped shape his life and made him the respected figure he is today.
Invitation to a Royal Wedding counts down to the wedding of the year, between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, by going behind the scenes of some of Britain’s most iconic royal weddings in recent memory. Presented by Sir Trevor McDonald and Julie Etchingham the documentary meets the many people at the heart of making these momentous occasions work and discovers exactly what goes into orchestrating events attended by hundreds and watched by millions. Invitation to a Royal Wedding explores the key ingredients of a royal wedding and offers privileged insights into what goes into their planning. Royal weddings have always been moments of worldwide attention and the marriage of the fifth in line to the throne to an American TV star is set to be another major global event. Reflecting on the marriage of Harry’s parents, Elizabeth Emanuel, designer of Diana’s dress, tells the programme: “We did know it would crease a bit but when I saw Diana arrive at St Paul’s and we saw the creases I actually felt faint. I was horrified really because there was quite a lot of creasing there and she’s been in this little carriage with her father whose quite tall and she was all crunched in.” She adds: “I kept every scrap and we had to be very careful not to let any scraps fall on the floor because we didn’t want them to end up in the rubbish. We had a lot of journalists going through the rubbish to see what colour the dress was so I kept them pretty much as they were on the cutting table, every thread was important as far as I was concerned.” We also hear from royal florist David Longman and Paul Courtney, cake maker of William and Kate’s chocolate biscuit cake. The programme also includes a first hand accounts of the unbelievable lengths taken to keep arrangements secret in the build up to the big days. Plus Sir Trevor gets access to St George’s Chapel ahead of the big day to find out the special significance of Harry and Meghan’s chosen wedding venue.

With Sir Percival (Dougray Scott) impatient to marry Laura (Olivia Vinall), Walter (Ben Hardy) and Marian (Jessie Buckley) are anxious to uncover the truth about the role he played in sending Anne to the asylum. However, when Mr Fairlie (Charles Dance) learns of Walter’s love for his niece, he sends him away. Sir Percival informs Marian of his blameless association with the Catherick family, and Anne’s mother Mrs Catherick (Kerry Fox) confirms his version of events. Laura tells Sir Percival about her feelings for Walter in the hope he will release her from their engagement, and is devastated when her plan backfires. Wedding arrangements get underway, with Mr Fairlie agreeing to a marriage settlement that raises questions about Sir Percival’s true intentions. Count Fosco (Riccardo Scamarcio), a close friend of the baronet, arrives for the wedding and Marian is struck by his charms. Laura resigns herself to her new life, and she and Sir Percival marry. Sir Percival and his new bride return from their honeymoon to Blackwater, the house they now share with Marian, accompanied by Count Fosco and his wife Madam Fosco (Sonya Cassidy). The Royal Wives of Windsor
Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport
A Royal Marriage: The fairy-tale wedding is complete, but now the real work of being a royal wife begins. From producing babies to supporting good causes, the list of royal duties is endless. There are wonderful perks and privileges but all wives face dangerous pitfalls. From the women who’ve played by the rules, to those who challenged the establishment, theirs is a life picked over by a media hungry for royal stories. In fairy tales, princesses live happily ever after. But, in reality, married life for royal wives can be somewhat more complex and challenging.
Heathrow is the busiest airport in Britain and fighting to keep its No 1 spot in Europe. The series has a fresh new feel, focusing more on the nearly 77,000 colleagues that work on the airfield and in the terminals, and who are now more than ever trying to keep Heathrow in prime position. Out in the terminal, we’re back with the popular king and wueen of Heathrow’s passenger experience managers - Demi and Sue – who this year deal with an array of passenger conundrums, from delays to medical emergencies and unruly passengers. Other old favourites are Carrie-Anne and Selina, the darlings of the check-in, and of course airside transportation expert Hugh, cleaning out the Royal Suite in the only way he knows best. New faces include Ian out on the airfield. He thinks his dreams have come true at the tender age of 50 as he’s re-training to become part of the airside operations team, fulfilling a boyhood dream. Plus, veteran operations manager Peter has to manoeuvre the country’s biggest crane across a live runway and young Russian Aeroflot’s Oksana has to deal with a large number of unaccompanied minors in Terminal 4. Heathrow has over 200,000 people travelling through the airport every day… all having to pass through immigration, and for the first time we go behind the scenes of Britain’s biggest border to see first-hand how Border Force officers make the decision whether to let people in or out of the country. We follow Border Force Bob and Katryna, whose cases include a Brazilian student, a Nigerian holiday maker and a possible people trafficker. Add to this the heady mix of Heathrow’s biggest stars – it’s passengers, and it’s access all areas to the laughter and the tears that make up Britain’s Busiest Airport.

Britain’s Best Home Cook
Thursday 3rd May, BBC1, 20.00
The search is on for Britain’s Best Home Cook, in a brand new BBC One cookery competition judged by the queen of home cooking Mary Berry, produce expert Chris Bavin, and top chef Dan Doherty. Hosted with wit and warmth by Claudia Winkleman. The eight part series will see 10 passionate home cooks from across the country embark on the ultimate immersive cooking competition. To win over the judges, the cooks will have to demonstrate individual flair, skill, creativity and breadth in their home cooking. Each week the judges will set two challenges – an ultimate home favourite and an improvised dish around a single ingredient - before the weakest cooks face the elimination round to decide who is going to leave the competition. In this first episode the cooks have an hour and a half to prepare their ultimate burger with at least two sides designed to showcase their individual personality. The cooks rustle up a variety of patties with different influences, with a Welsh inspired rarebit burger, Indian spiced patty and pakoras, Nigerian suya spiced beef, Asian shredded beef in a bao bun and a plethora of cheese burgers. Each of the judges choose their personal favourite, placing the cooks with the best burgers in an advantaged position as they get to determine one key ingredient choice for everyone in round two. This week it is either nuts or berries, opening up a world of culinary possibilities. In the Cooks’ Challenge, which tests their inventiveness and creativity, they must prepare for a dish celebrating the central ingredient selected by their fellow cook(s) without any prior knowledge of the other ingredients they’ll have in their kitchens. Based on their performance in these two challenges, Mary, Dan and Chris decide who is safely through to next week and who must cook again in an elimination round. The judges have chosen a dish that requires precision and any lack of concentration could lead to an early exit. Who will wilt under the pressure and be sent packing leaving the remaining nine cooks to compete another week?

Louisa finds it more than a little awkward when Larry invites Henry Miller to stay. Insisting on walking around naked, the liberal contents of Henry’s novels raise heated discussions within the family. Meanwhile, with the Greek government clamping down on ‘immoral behaviour’, Sven is arrested due to his sexuality. Larry is incensed and demands Margo obtain books on miscarriages of justice and fighting fascism from the Countess. However, learning that she is not permitting anyone to enter her villa, Larry takes matters into his own hands. With Spiros still missing his family, Louisa realises that the two men she loves the most on the island need rescuing. But if she is honest with herself, does she really want Spiros’ wife to return? Louisa’s cousin Basil also makes a surprise appearance on the island, and the family anxiously wait for news on Hermione’s estate.

Civilisations Stories: The First Refugees cho i c e BBC1, 19.30 Eleven BBC One documentaries, one for each BBC English Region, accompany the landmark BBC Two series Civilisations. Fashion historian Amber Butchart discovers how a group of 17th century refugees established a connection between migrants, the clothing industry and the East End of London that has persisted down the generations. The Huguenots, French Protestants fleeing persecution from Catholic France, were skilled artists and craftsmen. They gave us the word refugee. But one of - if not the most important legacies to British society - was their brilliance as silk weavers.

Britain In Bloom BBC2, 18.30
Chris Bavin travels to Stechford to meet a group of determined volunteers entering their town into It’s Your Neighbourhood, the entry level scheme of Bloom. This is a grassroots campaign which is meant to be a gentle introduction to the main annual competition, but this small team of Bloomers is taking on three daunting projects that would be a challenge for even an experienced group. They aim to tackle the overgrown weeds at the train station, clear up the litter strewn grounds at the local police station and transform a neglected church garden into a vegetable patch to supply the local food bank. However, finding invasive Japanese knotweed in the garden threatens to derail their plans.

Britain’s Fat Fight With Hugh Fearnleye cho i c Whittingstall BBC1, 21.00
Children are eating out twice as much as they did in the 1970s, so Hugh puts the spotlight on our most popular high street restaurant chains. He challenges them to reduce the amount of sugar in their puddings, to carry calorie information on their children’s menus and to stop selling bottomless fizzy drinks. When he lets them know there is a window of opportunity to do something before a league table is published, ranking the top 25 from best to worst, some make significant changes. The result is that 10 restaurant chains are now selling 6 million healthier kids’ meals a month.

Paul O’Grady For the Love of Dogs: India e c i cho ITV1, 20.30
In this four-part series, Paul rolls up his sleeves like never before, as he helps the team at Delhi’s top dog shelter deal with the fifty sick and abandoned dogs that arrive through their doors each and every day. From puppies involved in cars accidents, to old timers with chronic arthritis, Paul is on hand to nurse these waifs and strays as only he can with sensitivity, compassion and good humour. It’s Paul’s second week in the heart of Delhi and he meets an abandoned young street pup called Toto, whose ears are badly infected. Toto’s ears were so red raw when he arrived that the hair on them might never grow back and he is in desperate need of some TLC. Meanwhile, Friendicoes canine behaviourist Pia attempts to train a boisterous Labrador who can’t currently be rehomed because of his behaviour. He was abandoned in the park behind the shelter and proves to be quite a handful. Can Paul work his magic with the naughtiest dog in Delhi?

Cats Welfare News
Amigos de Gillian Banks
Things to remember! CATS make great pets because they're low maintenance, and thrive in families with children.
They like to leap, run and pounce, which is great fun to watch, and love being stroked and cuddled. Here, in Tenerife, we have many cats of all ages, awaiting their forever homes. Whether you decide to adopt a kitten or an adult cat, they will all have lots of love and affection to give. Introducing children to pets is an important way of teaching them to respect animals. If you choose to have a kitten, it's important to lay out some rules, ahead of time. These need to go both ways: rules for the kitten and rules for the kids. Choose areas where your pet will be allowed to roam. Will it be an indoor cat, or will it be allowed to go outside? Is it allowed to jump on the furniture? The children's rules need to be clear, too. Set boundaries on when and how to play with the kitten, and how to pick it up. Make it clear that it's not OK to pull its tail or whiskers, or any other part of its body. Set each child a role in the care of your new pet. One could be responsible for making sure that the kitten has fresh food and water every day, while another ensures its bedding is clean, and toys are available. Cleaning the litter box should be done by adults, though, as children do forget to wash their hands thoroughly, and this task calls for strict
K9 Animal News SAM is a medium-sized, brown dog who is about four years of age, and was left outside K9 one night, last October. He is extremely happy, wagging his tail non-stop, all day every day. He absolutely loves people, and is very friendly. He is also very affectionate, and, although not the size of lap-dog, will definitely fight hard for that spot, during cuddle time. He loves going on walks and is really good off the lead. He is very particular about which dogs he prefers spending time with, so we recommend that he goes to a home with no other dogs. Sam is sure to brighten up anyone's life with his incredible smile and happy character. Would you

hygiene. When you bring your kitten home, your children will be excited and ready to play with it. Your kitten will be less stressed if you let it get comfortable with its new surroundings and family at its own pace. Remind your children that their new companion needs time to feel safe in its new home, and soon they will have a friendly, playful and loveable pet. Adoptions Please consider adopting a kitten/cat from us. Contact us via our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com or ring/ whatsapp Maria (English) on 6466 29129, seven days a week 9am-6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm on 6712 82773. All kittens go on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you've made the right decision. Missing from home Angelo has gone missing from Ten Bel, Las Galletas, where he has only just been rehomed. Despite lots of posters, no one has seen him. His owner is desperate to find him, because he is deaf and very vunerable, and not familiar with the area. He isn't wearing a collar, but has been microchipped. He has been neutered, although
his ear has not been cut. Please can everyone keep an eye out for him, as his owner wants him back home, where he belongs? If you do find him or see him, please keep hold of him and contact Annette on 64 28 77 706. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10-6pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you. Shop volunteers We are desperately short of volunteers who can spare a few hours a week, either mornings or afternoons. Never worked in a shop before? No problem. You won't be on your own, and full training is given. Facebook PM to ask questions, or have a noobligation chat.
Super Sam consider giving him a home? Why don't you come to meet him? Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-and-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of
our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker, K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats. Also, to see daily photos of the walks that take place at K9, like the Facebook page Voluntarios del Refugio K9 Ways you can help If you wish to support K9 animal refuge, and contribute towards the safe rescue and adoption of abandoned dogs and cats, we would be very appreciative. You can buy our merchandise (T-shirts, vests, key rings, wristbands and more) at K9, sponsor one of our dogs via our website, and donate

Tenerife Loves Karaoke - Heat 2 THE second heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, sponsored by Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, continued where the first heat finished … on a high!
This time, it all took place at a new venue for Tenerife Loves Karaoke, Howlin’ at the Moon, on the strip of Laguna Park 1, Costa Adeje. Just like the first heat, the place was full, and we had a full complement of singers. Once again, there was a variety of songs, and not an Adele or Ed Sheeran number in sight! Gordon Slayney, Tenerife Loves Karaoke’s host for the night, got proceedings underway with Creep (the second time this has been sung so far this year), followed by Wings’ Let’s Stick Together, complete with harmonica. Next up was our first duo of the year, Anita and Lyn, who performed Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, in full costume. They bought the house down, to say the least! Clive followed with If I Were A Rich Man, then Carol performed with a brilliant version of Neither One Of
Us. Then came A Message To You, Rudy, and the last song before the break...The Lion Sleeps Tonight. The second half started with Kev providing a great performance of Romeo and Juliet, which was followed by renditions of The Lady Is A Tramp, Human, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Hallelujah, I Love Him So, If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body and Love Is All, with Angie finishing with Run. After a short break, the judges confirmed who would be going into the sing-off, and Gary, Carol, Kev and Roxanne were the successful contestants. Their second song choices
were given to Gordon, and Gary kicked off the proceedings with his version of Human. Carol was hot on his heels with Needle In A Haystack, Kev sang Snake,
and Roxanne performed Writing’s On The Wall. What a night, what a sing off; this was going to be close. Each person performed bril-
liantly, and gave everyone at Howlin’ at the Moon a funfilled, entertaining night. However, it is a competition, and it was confirmed that the two contestants going into this year’s semifinals would be Carol and Kev. Congratulations to them both. Each received their heat trophies, and meal vouchers from this year’s sponsors, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, along with two tickets to see the TributoFest concert, featuring Not The Rolling Stones. We would like to thank everyone who entered at Howlin’ at the Moon, and the owners and staff who made this another memorable heat. The next heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke is on Wednesday, 25th May at Happy Days, Los Cristianos. If you would like to enter, and be in with a chance of winning 1,000 euros, and to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, plus meals from this year’s sponsor Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, call 822 14 15 17, or you can register, directly, at the venue. Don’t forget - you have to be in it, to win it!

Children love to learn
THE first four months of 2018 have seen more than 2,000 children visiting our refuge, to participate in our educational programme. We feel that this is extremely important to the future welfare of animals on our island, here in Tenerife. Unfortunately, we are experiencing larger numbers of abandoned dogs, so please do come and visit us if you are interested in adopting. We do not charge, but donations are very welcome. Every dog is fully vaccinated and microchipped, and comes with a clean bill of health. So you can rest assured that your pet will have the best start to its new life that we can offer.
Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. IF you are considering revamping your Tenerife property, one of the largest areas you will need to consider is flooring. This is a big investment, because it covers such a large space, and needs to be chosen with care. Mistakes can be disastrous. The same techniques apply to flooring as to other areas of interior design. Dark floors will make rooms look smaller, whereas pale colours will reflect light, and look bigger. Choosing the right material is also far more complicated than just going for a “look”. Several other factors, such as environment, durability and cost, also need to be taken into account. Laminate flooring is made of engineered wood, comprising a number of plywood layers. However, this can warp if it gets too wet or humid. Lino used to be thought rather old-fashioned, but new designs mean

Revamp your
flooring
that this is a good choice, and it provides the opportunity of introducing colour and pattern into your i n t e r i o r- d e c o r a t i n g scheme. Because lino is a sealed surface, there are no cracks or textures in which bacteria or dirt can accumulate, so it is ideal for locations such as kitch-
ens and bathrooms. Most properties in Tenerife have tiled floors, and there’s good reason for this. Tiles stand up to years of abuse and are water resistant, so you can sweep and mop them clean. Although they tend to be reserved for kitchens and bathrooms in the UK, here, in a warm climate, they
can be used throughout the house. In addition, they will stand up to gritty sand, dirty and wet feet, and spills, and can create a fresh, cool impression. On a really hot day, what is nicer than stepping onto cool tiles? For winter months, or particular spots such as beside the bed, small rugs and runners can add a touch of colour and texture. Because tiles are so hard-wearing, you can afford to choose a pale colour, which will make your rooms look bigger and fresher. Imagine using a white carpet, and you can see that tiles offer a distinct advantage. Although carpet is soft and warm and adds insulation, it is not particularly suited for hot climates. In the UK, it is used for texture over bare floorboards, and to retain heat in a cooler
climate. Tiles are reserved for areas of heavy traffic, such as entrance halls, and for places where water would make carpet impractical, such as kitchens and bathrooms. In addition, apart from the need to keep it clean, carpet needs hoovering, and persistently humid conditions can lead to mould and mildew becoming a problem. If you make the decision to go for tiles, then comes the choice of design and colour. You don’t need to use the same tiles throughout the house, and you can create divisions within a room, for lounge and dining areas, by creating a block of colour in tiles, or a surround of patterned tile to separate off a particular zone. If you are looking for a more rustic design, don’t rule out tiles. Nowadays, there are many designs that look like wood or stone, which still have all the advantages of hard-wearing and easy-clean tiles. The other problem
with having the floor revamped is that it’s very difficult to live in the property while it’s being done. It might be possible to move furniture into one room or another while each area is being worked on, but this causes complete chaos if you are staying there, too. It’s definitely worth thinking about having the work projectmanaged on your behalf, which means you can leave the island, and come back to your newlyprepared property, without any stress or hassle. Many interior-decorating companies will get involved in contracting the workmen, key-holding, buying materials, overseeing the work and liaising with you, so that you are fully involved and informed, without being inconvenienced. Deco Nuevo can supply all the items and services mentioned, and organise free estimates, without obligation, in the comfort of your own home. Call them on 922 789 729.

Seeing a way forward By Val Sainsbury A CATARACT is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. They are the most common cause of vision loss in people over the age of 40, and the principal cause of blindness in the world. They affect more than 22 million Americans aged 40 and older, and, as the US population ages, more than 30 million people in the States are expected to have cataracts by the year 2020. Symptoms and signs A cataract starts out small, and, at first, has little effect on your vision. You may notice that your vision is blurred a little, like looking through a cloudy piece of glass, or viewing an impressionist painting. A cataract may make light
from the sun or a lamp seem too bright or glaring, or you may notice when you drive at night that the oncoming headlights are more blinding than before. Colours may not appear as bright as they once did. The type of cataract you have will affect exactly which symptoms you experience, and how soon they will occur. When a nuclear cataract first develops, it can bring about a temporary improvement in your near vision, called “second sight. Unfortunately, the improved vision is short-lived, and will disappear as the cataract worsens. On the other hand, a sub-capsular cataract may not produce any symptoms until it is well-developed. If you think you have a cataract, see an eye specialist for an examaniation, to find out for sure. Cataract prevention Alhough there is significant controversy about whether cataracts can be prevented, a number of studies suggest certain nutrients and nutritional supplements may reduce your risk of them developing. One large, 10-year study of female health professionals found that higher dietary
intakes of Vitamin E, and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, from food and supplements, were associated with significantly-decreased risks of cataract. Good food sources of Vitamin E include sunflower seeds, almonds and spinach. Good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin include spinach, kale and other green, leafy vegetables, and colourful fruits and veg. Other studies have shown that anti-oxidant vitamins such as Vitamin C and foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the
cataract risk. Another step you can take is to wear protective sunglasses that block 100% of the sun's UV rays, when you are outdoors. Treatment When symptoms begin to appear, you may be able to improve your vision for a while using new glasses, strong bifocals, magnification, appropriate lighting or other visual aids. Think about surgery when your cataracts have progressed enough to seriously impair your vision, and affect your daily life. Many people consider poor vision to be
an inevitable fact of ageing, but cataract surgery is a simple, relatively-painless procedure to regain vision. Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision. In fact, it is the most-frequently-performed surgery in the United States, with more than three million Americans undergoing these operations, each year. Nine out of 10 people who have cataract surgery regain very good vision, somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40. During surgery, the surgeon will remove your clouded lens, and, in most cases, replace it with a clear, plastic, intraocular lens (IOL). New IOLs are being developed all the time, to make the surgery less complicated for surgeons, and the lenses more helpful to patients. Presbyopiacorrecting IOLs potentially help you see at all distances, not just one. Another new type of IOL blocks both ultraviolet and blue light rays, which research indicates may damage the retina. Also, men should be aware that certain prostate drugs can cause intra-operative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS), during a cataract procedure.

KitKat popularity is crunched in EU BRITISH favourite KitKat is set to lose its EU-wide trademark status, which will enable any company to produce a chocolate bar, copying its iconic shape. The four-fingered treat, made by Nestle, lost an appeal at the European Union’s Court of Justice
because it was not well known enough in Belgium, Ireland, Greece and Portugal. To obtain full protection, the Swiss company had to prove the design was known to be distinctive, across all member states. Advocate General Melchior Wathelet, whose advice, though not legally binding, is often followed, said sufficient evidence had been provided, only, for Denmark, Germany, Spain,
France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Finland, Sweden and the UK. Status had previously been granted by the EU intellectual property office in 2006. It becomes the latest company to have lost a decision over shape protection, and even the challenging Rubik’s Cube lost out, in November 2016, after the CoJ decided it was not distinctive enough.

Red frenzy ends dream CD Tenerife 2 Huesca 4 By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
TAKE an inept referee, two dismissals and a phantom penalty, as well as a lineswoman hit on the head with a coin, thrown from the crowd, and you have the ingredients which all but destroyed Tenerife’s promotion ambitions. Claims and counter-claims, from the two, red-carded, Tenerife players and the referee, rumbled on all week, and there wasn’t much to smile about in the days leading up to the match. Top-scorer Longo, ruled out for the remainder of the season, had to fly back to Milan for a shoulder operation, and, with so many injured players, Tenerife had done well to keep their season on the boil. But this starting line-up looked weak. The defence appeared vulnerable, and Inaki had a poor game at left-back. Even keeper Dani Hernandez was below par. Third-placed Huesca led the division for much of the season, and looked a good side. Cucho, who was always a threat up front, struck an early chance wide. But Tenerife, who tried to force the pace, were rewarded on the half-hour. Acosta sprinted down the right, and his cross enabled Casadesus to run on to the ball, for the opening goal. Referee Isidro Diaz de Mera appeared petty, making some bizarre calls. And
he topped them all with a penalty, awarded against Carlos Ruiz. There was clear daylight between the Tenerife central-defender and the Huesca forward. But Ruiz pleaded his case, only to get a second yellow card and a sending-off. Cucho buried the spot-kick, and it was all level. However, Casadesus, enjoying one of his best games of the season, left two Huesca defenders in his wake, before taking the ball wide of the keeper, to make it 2-1 at the break. Jorge came on for Suso at the start of the second half, to fill Ruiz’s role. But the defence failed to pick up Cucho, after Dani had touched a shot away, and he finished sharply to even the score. Huesca’s third goal again showed up the defensive frailties. Vadillo shaped up for a shot, but Alberto and Jorge failed to stop it, and the ball broke to Moi Gomez, who had a simple tap-in. Juan Villar replaced Alberto, but he didn’t look sharp, and had, it seemed, returned from his latest injury too soon. Malbasic replaced Casadesus, but, by then, the ref-
eree’s stranglehold on the game was frustrating Tenerife, and the 14,790 crowd. The fourth goal, from Ferrero after 74 minutes, was a rasping shot into the bottom corner of the net, which sealed victory for the visitors. But there was plenty of drama to come. Raul Camara offered the ref some career advice from the bench, and was shown a red card promptly, despite not actually being on the pitch. Then, stupidly, an idiot in the crowd threw a coin that struck lineswoman Guadalupe Porras on the head, causing a lengthy delay
while she was checked over. Thankfully, there was no lasting damage. Wednesday’s disciplinary hearing eased Tenerife’s burden, somewhat, and the club can appeal against the verdicts. Camara received a threematch ban for his criticism of the ref from the bench, but Ruiz had his first booking, and the subsequent sending-off, cancelled. Basically, it means that officials admitted the penalty wasn’t justified. It’s too late, obviously, to right the wrong, but at least it means that Ruiz can play at Rayo Valleca-
no this Sunday, at 5pm. As for the coin-throwing, CDT have been fined 1,500 euros, and the San Sebastian stand, from where the coin came, will be closed for one game. That will cause the club lots of problems, with re-allocating season-ticket holders, so the closure won’t take place for two or three games. The overall effect on CD Tenerife is that their promotion dream is now in tatters. They are six points behind the play-off spots, and even winning the final, six games may not be enough… unless the teams above them fall apart!
CD Marino
Marino’s away formula Santa Brigida 1 CD Marino 3 MARINO’S islandhopping trips came up trumps again, their Saturday trip to Gran Canaria, for the clash against Santa Brigida, reaping three valuable points. Ahmed was the two-goal hero, the first arriving after 29 minutes, and though Santi equalised just two minutes later, there was no stopping rampant Marino. Zeben restored their advantage 15 minutes into the second half, and Ahmed wrapped up the points with his second strike, in the 71st minute. This success gave Marino a little boost up their Tercera group table, to 13th, but they face a tough home
game on Sunday, when Lanzarote visit the Las Americas club at noon. The fourth-placed team
are looking to secure a promotion play-off spot, by maintaining their position.

Pride and progress Adasat leads Arona charge Sporting Huelva 1 Egatesa Granadilla 1 GRANADILLA, keen to hold on to fourth place, are away on Sunday at Real Betis, who are just below them in the league. With just three, regular league games left, Granadilla, who have enjoyed a fine, winning season, are looking to consolidate. They secured another hardearned point last Saturday
at Sporting Huelva. Eva Llamas led the way with a goal for the visitors at the start of the second half, but Anita ensured a share of the spoils, with a 61st-minute strike. But it’s not just the senior team who are thriving, because Granadilla’s development programme is also bearing fruit. Paola Hernandez has been selected for Spain’s Under-17 squad for the European Cup Finals, in Lithuania, between 9th21st May.
A FEAST of boxing awaits fans at Los Cristianos sports hall tonight (Friday), as local supermiddleweight Adasat Toro Rojas heads the bill in one of the three, six-round professional bouts. Basketball
Adasat, one of the most successful Canarian fighters, recently fought on the undercard of the Chris Eubank Jnr world title fight in Manchester. There are also seven amateur fights, but some opponents won’t be confirmed until just before the 6pm start. The professional line-up comprises Ibrahima Sarr v Adrian, Mihail v Marcos
Figueras and Adasat against a late challenger. Featured on the amateur bill, over three rounds, are Kilian v Cotu, Geiro v Alvaro, Kevin v Cristian, Joel v TBA, Alberto v TBA, Raul v Jerday and Valdivia v Victor. Tickets are available on the door at the Pabellon Jesus Grillo, next to the open-air swimming pool, for just 15 euros, or 20 euros ringside.

Big relief for Tenerife
ENDING a run of bad form came as a huge relief for Iberostar Tenerife, who saw off visitors Fuenlabrada 83-75 in La Laguna on Sunday. The worrying thing was that they nearly threw it away with a disastrous final session. After accumulating a decent lead, quarterscores of 20-14, 24-17, 2117 and 18-27 proved just enough to secure the win. With Rosco Allen out
injured for the remainder of the season, it was good to see Josh Akognon step up to top-score with 14 points. The Nigerian-American, who has made a strong impact since arriving in midseason, will be joined this week by another Nigerian dual-national, Tai Odiase, a defender who has been playing for the University of Chicago. But it will take a consistent revival for Tenerife, now 10th in the league, in the top-eight play-off spots.
Inter-Island master strokes FIVE experienced, adventurous swimmers, are about to tackle a crossing, normally completed by ferries only. On Friday (4th May) at 5pm, they will set out from the Canarian island of La Palma, with La Gomera their objective.
They have chosen the 72-kilometre stretch to raise funds for the APANATE, an association for fathers of children with autism, which the swimmers have been supporting since 1995. Group spokesman Miguel Angel Rodriguez said: “We normally swim in competitions, but we have reached the age where we want a different
motivation.” But it is not something they are taking on lightly, despite their swimming pedigrees, because training has been rigorous in all types of weather and conditions. They will also have a complete back-up system in place for any emergencies. Good luck to the plucky five, who deserve calm seas and fair winds, all the way.

Our maximum celebrations
HOW many people turned up for the annual celebration and prize-giving at Showtime? Exactly 180… you really couldn’t make it up!
That said, the evening, which provided maximum entertainment, got underway with the Ladies’ Final, Gio beating team-mate Karen to pick up the first of many trophies. Next on the stage were the Showtime Girls, who had everybody singing along to hit Motown classics, before having volunteers on display with the best and worst twerks ever seen. A well-earned cheer went around the room, as the girls completed their 45-minute routine. Before the darts resumed, we were treated to a curryand-rice meal to help soak up the alcohol being consumed. Luc and Joke then contested the Division 2 final, and Luc’s vast experience shone through, as he won 2-0 to pick up the trophy. Tom then met Wayne in the main event, and the latter finished better on the night, to pull off an incredible double, after winning last year’s Division 2 title. Chairman Chas then shook hands and offered congratulations to the winners of over 60 trophies, which were all won, deservedly, during the season. Highlights of the year were the 180s scored in the ladies’ Divisions 2 and 1. A big thanks to Graham, the smartest man on the planet, who acted as scor-
er in the finals, and to all markers. Congratulations to all who donated their prize money to our Cancer Bus charity collection, which was finalised after the raffle, and raised a mammoth 1,460 euros. In addition, a 32-inch television was donated for the oncology waiting room
at the hospital. Every bar donated a prize or two for the raffle, to help raise the charity sum, and thanks to all committee members, who work tirelessly throughout to make the Oasis Fm Darts League as successful as ever. Finally, thanks to Chris Elkington, our evening’s com-
pere, and for the ongoing support from Oasis Fm, Canarian Weekly and Showtime. I hope I haven’t missed anyone out, but, if so, you know we appreciate every-
one who helps. Sadly, Tom lost the darts but won a bottle of spirits and a meal for two at The Waterfall in the raffle. Guess where he’s having his wedding reception. Hmmm?
