Arona’s Golden Mile is hosting a magical event Cont. from Front The magic of Christmas will invade Arona’s famous Golden Mile with this Special event. There’s also a full afternoon of dynamic activities, focused on tourism, but open to all audiences. But the Avenida Las Americas de Arona will be the show’s centrepiece, between 5-10pm. The most representative spaces of the Golden Mile will have a red carpet, in which various performances will take place around a main stage, in the Safari Shopping Centre plaza, with four headline groups, who will bring the music closer to the audience. It will be led by “SantyClaus Dj”, with tunes from the 70s, 80s and 90s, followed by Rock & Roll versions of the 50s and 60s, by “The Lucky Tones”, along with 70s and 80s disco and funk by “Funktastic Band”, as well as the best of international pop-rock with
“4 on ground”. There will also be special performances by carnival group “Ritmo Sureño”, and American jazz band “Pixie Dieland”. But the event’s main highlight is the Night
Market, which is an initiative driven by the area’s businesses, featuring the craft and variety market with different stands, located on the Golden Mile. The “Special Christmas Night” event aims to give a

special touch to Christmas, welcoming the thousands of tourists who visit the municipality on these important dates. The entire event sees the Tourist Board and the Economic Promotion area
of the City of Arona, joining forces to make it possible. It’s an activity in which the different establishments of the Golden Mile’s commercial zone can also collaborate. Tourism Councillor David Pérez said: “More than 1.5 million tourists visit us every year, but many also choose to enjoy these important dates in our town. “Because of this, and being the driving force of Arona’s economy, we are trying to make everyone feel at home, developing activities that encourage participation and, of course, generate economic development.” He added: “The Golden Mile is one of our best showcases. It has gastronomy and quality shops that attract a demanding public, to which we must respond with activities that promote interest. “But we must always bear in mind that they are initiatives which also adapt to all audiences, including our residents.”
Car crash sparks flames in Teide’s National Park
THE Guardia Civil had to deal with an embarrassing situation after one of their patrol cars rolled down a hill, fell off a seven-metre-high ledge, and landed in a greenhouse because the handbrake had been left off! Officers were on a call to a house in La Aldea, Gran Canaria, when, to everyone’s surprise, they heard a loud noise and the breaking of glass. They saw their car fall onto the greenhouse, at the property they were investigating. The mishap caused a huge scare, but, fortunately, there were no casualties because there was no one inside the greenhouse, or inside the police car. Eye-witnesses have confirmed the same events as reported by the Guardia Civil, concerning what ac-
tually happened on Monday morning. To recover the vehicle, however, officials had to contract a specialised grua, because of the precarious position in which the car landed.
The rescue operation caught the attention of many residents, who gleefully recorded the vehicle’s recovery, which has now gone viral on the internet.
TWO cars collided headon, at Teide’s National Park on Monday, causing both vehicles to go up in flames, instantly, and sparking a blaze in the surrounding vegetation. The incident happened at around 1pm, at the Parador in Las Cañadas, on the TF-21, and four people were injured, although the extent of their injuries are not known, The TF 21 had to be
closed, to help assist the Emergency Services with putting out the fire, as well as rescuing the injured parties. The road closure caused several lengthy traffic jams, in and around the National Park. The Guardia Civil, Canarian Emergency and firefighters, as well as a team from the Environmental Department, were all at the scene to offer their assistance.

KURT Konrad, one of Adeje’s economic giants, has been honoured by the Council with a street renamed after him. The new Avenida Kurt Konrad Mayer, in El Madroñal, was previously the Avenida El Madroñal, and Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga unveiled a plaque on the street. It was recognition of the work and years of investment given to the borough by the Chilean, whose family and close friends attended the ceremony. The Mayor said: “We are here to remember and recognise something important in our recent history, and, also, something that reflects our change, from an agricultural society to a top-class tourism destination. “Among those who contributed to that change was Kurt Konrad who, in life, was a man very committed to the development and completion of programmes, in both infrastructures and the evolution of our society. “He was a pioneer, a visionary as a businessman, but someone who never forgot the most important thing, his workers, who today have recognised his memorable contributions.” Roberto Konrad, one of his sons and the director of Tenerife Top Training, spoke of his father as “a man who never stopped working, and who saw possibilities where others only saw problems”.

We name this street after our pioneering giant Kurt Konrad!
He added: “My father taught us a lot about work and effort, and he always said that our greatest wealth was the people who worked with us.” Chilean-born Kurt arrived in Tenerife in the middle of the 20th century, and began an intensive period of professional activity as an
architect, builder, developer and tourism promoter. Initially, he was with the RKF company, working on projects such as the Aparthotel Ponderosa, the Dollar nightclub and Titos pizzeria. He then began working on the construction and promotion of complexes
such as Los Geranios, Las Carabelas, Panorama, Club Atlantis, Paraíso del Sur, Oasis Paraíso, Hotel Santiago, Hotel La Pinta, H.A. Altamira, H.A. Santa María, Puerto Colón and Club Náutico. With financial and legal backing, Kurt also helped create the German school,
Colegio Alemán Alexander Von Humboldt, which has been renamed as the “Colegio Internacional Costa Adeje”. Kurt also pushed for the creation of a tourism promotion group, which has integrated into the CIT Sur, and he was President of the Rotary Club Tenerife. He also participated in the establishment of SPET, (for the external promotion of Tenerife), and of Turismo de Tenerife, as well as founding Adeje volunteer fire brigade. As if that weren’t enough, Kurt was also involved in the development of Golf Costa Adeje, the Los Olivos, Barranco de Torres, El Beril and La Caleta planning projects, and that of El Madroñal, very much part of the expansion of both Costa Adeje and the urbanisation of Adeje town. During recent years, before his 2011 death, Kurt Konrad Mayer played a part in the creation of Tenerife Top Training, an infrastructure now recognised as one of the best sports complexes of its type in the world.
Police wage war Unhealthy on drink-drivers Teide Park man TRAFFIC Police across Spain, and the Canaries, have stepped up their roadside spot-checks this week, until Sunday, and drink-drivers could be hit with 1,000-euro fines, plus six points off their licence. The excess blood, alcohol and drug tests come because, as usual, there will almost certainly be a surge of drivers under the influence in the run-up to Christmas. With that in mind, an additional 20,000 tests will have been carried out every day, including the weekend, on all types of road. Pere Navarro, DGT General Director, said: “The objective of this type of campaign is to make citizens aware that not only is alcohol incompatible with driving, but other drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines and opiates are psychoactive
substances, which are lethal behind the wheel.” Around 26% of drivers killed in collisions last year tested positive for illegal alcohol blood levels. Driving under the influence *The Road Safety law states those driving while over the legal alcohol limit will be fined 500 euros and lose four points from their licence. *If it is the second time within a year, or drivers test positive for double the limit
allowed, they will be fined 1,000 euros. *Drivers who test positive for drugs will be fined 1,000 euros and lose six points from their licence. *The punishment does not include medications, prescribed by a doctor *Police can impose higher fines, or take away your licence, if your alcohol or drug rate is particularly high (above 0.6 milligrams per litre).
AN Emergency helicopter was dispatched last Sunday to Teide National Park, where a man was suffering with serious health problems.
Because of the location, a team who work at the Park also assisted with the emergency, as well as the evacuation. The man, whose name or health condition were not revealed, was transferred to a nearby hospital, where he was receiving treatment.

Farmers’ Market is still growing, after a decade ADEJE’S Environment Department, run by Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, organised a series of activities last Sunday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Farmers’ Market. And why not? Every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, the market offers the best, “from the farm to your table”. Cllr Rivero Vargas said: “Since the Market opened, the public have been able to enjoy quality, fresh produce, grown by people who live in or near the borough. “It has also become a tool for social and economic growth in the rural areas of Adeje, which is something to be proud of, because the produce also meets all the EU standards for quality and healthy eating.” She added: “Freshness, quality and an excellent choice, along with accessible prices, have always been the standards set by this market, and our

stall-holders have all played an important part in its evolution. “Today, a lot of hotels and restaurants opt for local produce because they know it offers excellence in taste, texture and quality, in preparing their menus.” The produce on sale every week includes fruit and vegetables, flowers, crafts,
cakes and biscuits, honeys, cheeses, meats, and wines. And last Sunday, Adeje Council invited everyone to join in the celebrations. From 11am, there was show-cooking, with Pablo Pastor using produce from the market, followed by a tasting, with live background music provided by Grupo Chabor.
He and his friend were in the water, practising the sport, which consists of diving as deep as possible on one breath. The victim’s friend, concerned that he hadn’t returned to the surface when expected to, called the Guardia Civil just after 10am, notifying them that his diving partner was missing. But because of the unusual characteristics of the accident, the Emergency Services sent the rescue helicopter and the ground crew of the Search and Rescue (GES), as well
as a specialised group of underwater divers from the Guardia Civil, to look for the man. According to the information provided by the Emergency Services, a full search of the area was made along El Rosario coast. Eventually, a small recreational boat spotted a body floating between the buoys separating the sailing and swimming areas of La Nea beach, in El Rosario. A closer inspection confirmed that it was the diver’s body, and medics at the Radazul Marina could only confirm his death. The body has been taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Santa Cruz, where an autopsy will be performed to find out the exact cause of death.

Man swallows cocaine balls
A CHILEAN man was arrested at Malaga Airport after attempting to enter Spain with a number of cocaine pellets in his body. Police then watched as the 25-year-old South American excreted the 54 narcotic balls after being admitted to hospital. Officers confirmed that the man, who had come from Brazil, was carrying 725gms of cocaine in his stomach, hiding a further half-kilo in his suitcase. Authorities confirmed that the Latino drug-runner had journeyed via Lisbon, in a bid to avoid police checks. Two phones and 465 euros in cash were among the other articles seized by cops.
Drunk driver hits officer
A GUARDIA Civil officer, conducting a security check with his colleagues just after 1.40am last Monday, was run over by a drunken driver in Lanzarote. While officers were in the process of stopping another vehicle for a routine check, the driver knocked over one of them, and then hit other cars before coming to a halt. The security stop was situated at the Playa Blanca shopping centre in Yaiza, on the south coast of Lanzarote. When the officers finally caught up with the 49-year-old driver, they breath-tested him and discovered he was well over the alcohol limit. He was detained by the Guardia Civil and charged with dangerous driving and driving under the influence, as well as assaulting an officer. The latter’s injuries were not serious, fortunately, and he is now recovering from them.
Medics revive heart victim
A MAN aged 44 is recovering in hospital from an incident which happened last Saturday morning in Gran Canaria. A call was made at around 9am to the Emergency Services by the police, who patrol the Santa Catalina dock in Las Palma. They reported that a man had collapsed with a suspected heart attack. The police began performing CPR, and also used a defibrillator in the attempt to revive him. When the ambulance team arrived, they took over from the officers and continued with CPR until the man’s heart begun beating regularly again. Once the victim was stabilised, he was taken to Gran Canaria’s University Hospital, where he remains in recovery. But his condition is still critical.
TENERIFE’S People’s Party (PP) is demanding that the Canarian Government takes it share of responsibility in regulating the caravan/motor-home situation here on the Island. The party points out that there has been a boom for motor-home tourism in recent years, specifically here in the South. And, it says, the trend is growing exceptionally, and is becoming popular among local residents as well as foreign dwellers. The PP’s Manuel Fernandez wants to know what steps
have been taken by the Canarian Government to curb the invasion. Today (Friday) he will remind its members that across the Canary Islands, some 15,000 motor homes are registered. And this total does not include many converted vehicles. He will also make it clear to them that across Tenerife, there are just three official points where sewage can be flushed away, correctly and safely. Although the power of responsibility belongs to each particular municipality, he maintains that many coastal areas are affected. The People’s Party also wants the Canarian Government to take action because of the effect that this
particular activity has on landscapes, as well as the environment. To illustrate the PP’s concerns, A fire at Gran Canaria campsite Castillo del Romeral, in San Bartomole de Tirajana, damaged five caravans and a car in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday) at around 5am. Firefighters, along with National and Local Police, attended the site, with the flames spreading rapidly. At one point, there was an explosion, believed by officials to involve a gas bottle. The cause of the fire was not known yesterday, but despite the ferocious blaze, thankfully, there were no casualties.

New parking scheme will offer free spaces
THE rearranging of car parking spaces, on high streets and in “Open Commercial Zones”, has started across Tenerife. It will offer more free parking spaces, but the time limit is just 90 minutes, and you will be fined if you overstay your welcome! A brochure is being distributed to explain how these Blue Zones work, highlighting where they are and their most relevant aspects. It also enforces the aim of local councils to encourage a higher vehicle rotation in these areas, in the hope of achieving more purchases in shops, as well as ease of parking in commercial areas. The main points of the Blue Zones are: *The parking is completely free *Parking is allowed for up to 90 minutes, and then you must move your vehicle *There are parking meters for these zones, which issue a ticket with the time of entry to the parking space and departure (90 minutes later). They have a keyboard to enter the licence plate, and a button to issue the ticket. But they DO NOT accept coins or cards.
OFFICERS from Granadilla’s Guardia Civil surprised two Dutch holiday-makers, who were attempting to spend dodgy 50-euro notes. Both men were detained after trying to purchase goods with the ‘funny’ money at a shop in Las Chafiras. A 53-year-old, who was accompanied by his pal, 58, handed over a fake 50euro note. But the cashier,
who noticed immediately, notified the shop’s security guard, who alerted the Guardia Civil. Officers detained both men, after discovering that they were also carrying 14 more counterfeit notes. The Dutchmen, who have been charged with fraud and counterfeiting, are awaiting a court appearance.
Czech’s airport shock THE National Police have arrested a 40-yearold Czech, wanted in his country for crimes against public order and state security. He was stopped at Reina Sofia airport, trying to enter Tenerife on a flight from Dublin, when it flagged up that he had a European Order of Detention and Surrender issued against
him, for immediate arrest. Once he had been positively identified, he was detained in compliance with the court order, and is now in the hands of the judicial authorities. His arrest is part of the increased actions of preventive nature, which the National Police are carrying out at Reina Sofía airport.
French female hiker rescued
*Blue Zones are operational during business hours, from Monday to Friday (except holidays) from 9am to 1pm,
and from 4pm to 8pm. It means that you can park 90 minutes in the morning and another 90 in the afternoon.
Migrants’ boat had secret stash of hash
A BOAT, carrying 12 migrants, which included six children, arrived at the North Lanzarote coast, where Guardia Civil officers, who discovered them, later found 50 kilos of hashish aboard.
Dutchmen’s dodgy money flop
The boat was detected in the town of Orzola, thanks to a sharp-eyed local resident, who reported that he’d seen a group of migrants in the town. The boat occupants comprised 10 males and two females, who had children with them, and all were treated by Red Cross teams at the scene.

The migrants assured police that their boat had been returned to the sea. But later that day, Guardia officers found an abandoned boat in the nearby area of Varadero. In addition, some 300 metres from the boat, four bales of hashish were found, weighing a total of 50 kilos.
A FRENCH hiker was rescued on Monday afternoon after she had suffered injuries from a fall, while walking on the Caldera Blanca summit in Tinajo, Lanzarote. An emergency search-andrescue helicopter was sent to the area to assist her to safety.
The crew helped her onto the helicopter because she had injured her legs, and the Frenchwoman was then taken to an ambulance, awaiting her at Lanzarote airport. From there, she was driven to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital for treatment and further evaluation.

AN elderly British couple, arrested on a cruise ship when it docked in Lisbon after a 33-day journey, have been accused of smuggling cocaine, worth £2m, on a Caribbean voyage. Susan and Roger Clarke, aged 70 and 72, were apprehended on 4th December by plain-clothed officers from Portugal, with nine kilos of the illegal drug hidden in suitcases. The discovery was made on a Marco Polo ship, run by Cruise & Maritime Voyage, and officers, following a tipoff from the UK’s National Crime Agency, searched the couple’s belongings in their cabin and found the cocaine, concealed in the false bottoms of four suitcases. They look every inch a couple who are enjoying their retirement, yet they both have criminal records in the UK. Now, though, they live in the Alicante area of Guardamar del Segura, according to Ms Clarke’s Facebook account. The couple, who had paid £3,000 each for their cruise tickets, are now being held on suspicion of drugsmuggling, internationally. A fellow-passenger said: “They seemed just like any other couple. They really, really enjoyed a drink, but who doesn’t? I went ashore with them a couple of times and Roger paid for everything with cash. “Even on the boat, he would get wads of cash out of his pocket. But the pair dodged all photos, which is so odd for a cruise.” Vitor Ananais, who led the operation for Portugal’s
Couple had £2m cocaine stash on their cruise ship
Policia Judiciaria, said: “We believe the couple were given the drugs on a Caribbean island. But we do not know for sure where the cocaine was going to be brought ashore. “The couple were not at all showy. They blended in well, because most of the other passengers on the liner were also elderly. “We acted when we did, rather than wait for a possible handover, because we wanted to protect the investigation and ensure we seized the drugs.” Officers believed the Clarkes could have been delivering for a gang. They said the cocaine was,
probably, bound for London because the next stop after Lisbon was Tilbury, Essex, which was the ship’s final destination. Once source said: “The possibility that this couple were working for a Costadel-Sol-based British drugs gang, and accomplices in the UK, is being investigated actively. “They haven’t said a word yet, even to insist they’re innocent, or that the drugs were planted in their suitcases.” The pair were expecting to be collected by pals in the UK, so they could spend a few nights with them, before visiting family in the
West Midlands. They had driven to the UK from Spain previously, and had left their car in the Essex area. A close friend in the UK said: “The arrests came as a complete shock to the whole family. One of their friends, who was supposed to collect them, panicked when they did not come off the boat. He quizzed staff and found out they had been arrested.” A spokesman for Cruise & Maritime Voyages said: “We are co-operating fully with the Portuguese police officials. We do not tolerate any criminal activity, or antisocial behaviour, on board our ships.”
What has happened to our priceless art?
SPAIN has made “no effort” to return priceless art, looted by Nazis during World War II, according to US officials. After 600,000 paintings were stolen during the war, with 100,000 still missing, the Washington Principles was founded in 1998 to return them to their rightful owners. Some 44 nations, including Spain, committed themselves to the treaty. But US official adviser Stuart E Eizenstat criticised Spain for “taking no steps”
to fulfil the principles. It came after Spain refused to return Pissarro’s looted 1897 Rue Saint-Honore, Apres-Midi, Effet de Pluie to the heirs of the Cassirer family, the once-noted Parisian art dealers. The painting, worth around 26 million euros, is housed in Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza museum, established by the Spanish Government after buying the collection from the Thyssen family. After years of legal battles, the Government claims it is a “private museum, not covered by the Principles”.

Bus driver was twice on drugs A SPANISH bus driver has been stopped twice in 17 days for driving while under the influence of drugs, in the Murcia area of Torre Pachecho. The 48-year-old, who lives in Murcia, is facing a 2,000euro fine and a 12-point loss from his driving licence. The incidents took place on the route from TorrePacheco to Jumilla. On each occasion, there were at least 14 passengers aboard the bus. He was first stopped during random Cartegena police checks at the end of October, when an initial saliva test showed a positive reading for both cocaine and cannabis. He was then apprehended by the motorcycle division, close to the A-30 in Torre-Pachecho earlier this month, and the test produced similar results. On both occasions, the buses were immobilised until a replacement driver arrived.
Hot-dog seller murders a customer in the street A CUBAN hot-dog seller in Gran Canaria has been sentenced to eight years in prison, after stabbing a customer to death in the street. A court in the island’s capital, Las Palmas, heard how the 29-year-old, fast-food vendor, known as Adriel, took a knife, which was hidden in a bag, and stabbed his victim in the liver. The killing happened two days after the victim’s son, A.S., had argued with Adriel about food hygiene. After the initial confrontation Adriel was admitted to hospital with a nervous breakdown, but he then escaped to find AS at his home. The pair fought viciously, culminating in the stabbing of A.S. later that night in front of his wife and son, as they made their way to the police station to denounce the man. The sentence included the killer giving compensation of 28,000 euros to the victim’s family, including his son, brothers and wife, who all witnessed the traumatic incident. It was heard that Adriel suffers from a neurocognitive disorder, leading the judge to rule that he must first serve eight years in a psychiatric detention centre before prison. His period in the mental facility will, however, be deducted from his time served in prison.

Spain’s 90bn-euro Tenerife Property Auctions corruption costs are EU’s fourth heaviest
CORRUPTION is costing Spain around 90 billion euros annually, and the country is losing the EU’s fourth largest sum. A new study, held by members of the Green grouping in the European Parliament, showed that Spain finished behind Italy, France and Germany in the corruption stakes. These countries lose an estimated 237bn euros, 120bn and 104bn respectively, the study found. And Spain’s
corruption losses are equivalent to 8% of the value of the country’s economic output (Gross Domestic Product). It is also equivalent to nearly 2,000 euros for every person in Spain, which, along with the study’s other countries, experiences long-standing problems, with corruption in politics, business and the police force. The Gurtel corruption scandal, in which the conservative Partido Popular (PP) was adjudged to be responsible for siphoning public money into slush funds, led to the fall of Mariano Rajoy’s government in June.

Refugees should get ‘humanitarian visas’ EUROPE should produce ‘humanitarian visas’ for potential refugees, to keep them out of the hands of the mafia, says a Spanish MEP. Juan Fernando López Aguilar, from the PSOE party now governing Spain, says migrants would normally put their lives, and life-savings, at risk to travel to Europe on dangerous, unseaworthy crafts, or succumb to the false promises of humantraffickers. But they should be able to request an emergency entry card, from embassies or consulates, representing EU member States, he insists. These ‘humanitarian visas’ would allow them entry to European territory to enable them to apply for asylum. Historically, would-be asylumseekers have had little choice but to enter countries illegally, because there is no legitimate way of being accepted. National authorities recognise this, in accordance with the terms of the 1955 Geneva Convention on refugees. It means that ‘unlawful’ entry to a third State is not normally considered a criminal offence, when a person’s intention is to apply for asylum. Entering a country ‘illegally’ is often possible, only with the help of criminal organisations, including traffickers, whose methods are responsible for thousands of lives lost in transit. “The number of deaths in the Medi-
terranean is unacceptable,” said López Aguila. Europe’s budget for handling the migrant crisis has doubled this year, and the fact that MEPs voted in favour is “a major political sign”, considers López Aguilar, since it “helps provide a more human response” to the issue. “Around 90% of people granted asylum in Europe have entered the continent illegally,” says the Spanish MEP. “Since the year 2000, over 30,000 have died trying to reach our shores. “We need to establish legal and safe methods to allow them to get here, and it’s clear that we have lots to do in order to help them.” ‘Humanitarian visas’ would not, automatically, allow migrants to arrive in Europe and stay put. But they would let them get there safely, so they can at least apply for refugee status, which may be granted or denied, as immigration authorities see fit. And, because the migrants intend to travel to Europe anyway, doing whatever it takes to reach the continent in a bid for a better quality of life, or simply a life, it is crucial to give them a safe way of getting there, rather than allowing them to risk drowning, or being forced into sexual slavery. López Aguilar’s proposal won 429 votes, with 194 against, and 41 MEPs abstaining.

the man, and was, she said, forced to prostitute herself. But the teenager, then pregnant, contacted the police, telling them of her misfortune, and adding that she had also been beaten. In fact, her new husband’s younger brother even received a picture of the girl, with a black eye and a broken arm in a cast. The head of the Romanian family said the youngster’s parents had paid him 150 euros, to enable her to have an abortion. The teenager has now been transferred to an Andalusian help centre for minors, where she is being looked after.

Firefighters at full stretch to halt a ninth-floor blaze SANTA Cruz firefighters were called to an emergency at an apartment block in Los Gladiolos on Wednesday morning.
Eagle poisoner arrested POLICE have arrested a 52-year-old man, alleged to have poisoned two eagles, one of which was endangered. The suspect is believed to have killed a Mouse Eagle and an Iberian Imperial Eagle, a species which is in danger of extinction in Manzanares, Ciudad Real. Guardia Civil officers arrested him after agents from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) found a dead Mouse Eagle at a private game-reserve in Manzanares. Further tests
confirmed that the animal had died from poisoning. Later, an Iberian Imperial Eagle was found, again, showing symptoms of poisoning. The Guardia Civil stepped up their investigations further when a resident in Membrilla, Ciudad Real, reported that two cats had died of poisoning on the same reserve. Police, who later searched the suspect’s home, found several containers of the same poison used to kill the eagles, as well as further chemicals on the roof of his house, and in his car boot.
A blaze took hold in the early hours on the ninth floor of a residential complex, in Avenue Benito Pérez Armas. Locals said the home belonged to a person who suffered Diogenes syndrome (the need to accumulate garbage in the home at an extreme level). And neighbours also said the fire was probably caused accidentally, by a falling candle, because the apartment had no water or electricity connections. To make matters worse, fighters spotted flames coming through the windows. And because of the fire’s intensity, two more fire engines, as well as more fire-fighters, were needed. The firefighters had problems opening the door, so they were forced to knock it down to get
to the fire. But the entire apartment was engulfed in flames, and they couldn’t believe it. And the smoke was so dense that it travelled through the stairwell affecting the floors, above and beneath. The firefighters checked other premises by knocking on several ninth-floor doors, when, suddenly, shouts were heard from an apartment in which there was a frightened family. The firemen entered the apartment and took them to the balcony, to enable them to breathe fresh air until help arrived. Another woman, who began shouting for help
through a window, was told to wait for assistance, then more cries for help were heard from another apartment, In all, nine people were taken from their homes, with the assistance of firefighters and their oxygen masks. Two of the firemen, apart from extinguishing the flames, risked their lives by saving the lives of those nine residents from three apartments, in which smoke had blackened them out. But, said sources, had the fire originated on the lower floors, the rescue would have been even more complicated.

Dopey car thief caught by cops OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil’s traffic department detained a 47-year-old Santa Ursula man, charging him with theft and driving a stolen vehicle. Surprisingly, he was caught by the officers while they were conducting a routine traffic stop on the TF-31 during a drugsand-alcohol testing campaign. The officers realised as they questioned him
that his identification didn’t match that of the car’s details. And, while they were following procedure, it came to their attention that the car had recently been reported stolen from another town, in Puerto de la Cruz. That’s when the officers made the arrest and charged the man, who is currently awaiting a court appearance.
Terrorist held, after 24 years on the run! CARLOS Garcia Julia, a high-profile Spanish terrorist, has been arrested in Brazil… after 24 years on the run! Garcia Julia, one of five men responsible for the 1977 Atocha massacre in Madrid, was arrested in São Paulo by Brazil’s Federal Police. The former member of far-right group Fuerza Nueva was sentenced to 193 years in prison in 1980, for the murder of three lawyers, with links to the communist party, at a labour office on
24th January 1977 at 55 Calle Atocha. The terrorists also left four others seriously injured. The fugitive served 14 years in prison in Spain until 1994, before being granted temporary parole to apply for a job in Paraguay. Garcia Julia then used a legal loophole to avoid returning to Spain, and went on the run, instead, in South America, where he received further convictions for other crimes, including drug-trafficking.
More fury over Wolfpack gang after court persists with a non-rape sentence NAVARRA’S Superior Court of Justice has upheld a previous sentence, which cleared five men of rape and convicted them of the lesser offence of sexual assault, sparking a feminist outcry against the self-styled “La Manada” (Wolfpack) gang. Justices in the court voted three to two to uphold sentences of nine years in prison for all five members, following the July 2016 allegations, concerning an 18-year-old woman. The court upheld the earlier ruling for Jose Prenda, Angel Boz, Antonio Guerrero, Alfonso Cabezuelo and Jesus Dominguez, because no violence or intimidation was found to have been used. The two judges who voted against stated that, in their dissenting opinion, the evidence showed that the place where the woman was taken to be assaulted, an apartment building basement, was intimidating. The court ruled that the woman had not given the five defendants, all in their twenties, consent, when they met her in Pamplona, at the Running of the Bulls festival. In its ruling, it stated that the defendants had “humiliated”
the woman when they led her into the basement. They then assaulted her, while some filmed the incident on a mobile phone, the footage being used as evidence in the trial. The courts also heard the defendants were members of a WhatsApp messaging group which they called La Manada. The woman, who was later found outside the flats by a passing couple, was taken to a police station to report the assault. “All the accused knew, or should have understood, the situation in which the young woman found herself; a narrow and oppressive place, which hindered her reaction and defence,” the court stated. “The defendants exercised intimidation,” the dissenting opinion stated, adding that the
defendants should have been sentenced to 14 years and three months in prison. The defendants will be able to appeal against their sentences in Spain’s Supreme Court. They were first jailed by Navarra’s Provincial Court in April. But that court’s decision to sentence them for sexual assault, rather than rape, set off protests in cities across Spain and Europe. Judges said it was because there was no evidence of violence or intimidation, while feminist groups argued it was evidence of institutionalised sexism in Spain’s justice system. Spanish law states that a sexual assault qualifies as rape if violence or intimidation is used to subdue the victim. Politicians have since pledged to change the law, in the wake of April’s ruling.
Leading Irish mafia chief is killed in fall IRISH mafia big-wig, Michael Cumberton, a prominent member of the Kinahan cartel in Spain, was found dead in Marbella last Saturday, after falling from a hotel balcony.
The key figure in the gang’s operation in the country toppled to his death from an unnamed hotel, following a warning from Ireland’s police force, the Gardai, that he was under threat from dissident Republicans. He was the younger brother of famed hit-man Eamonn Cumberton and was told, specifically, that he would be targeted after Eamonn had murdered Real IRA man
Michael Barr at a Dublin pub in April 2016. According to The Sun’s Irish edition, Cumberton had been staying with head honcho
Daniel Kinahan in his luxury Marbella apartment. Kinahan had given Cumberton lodgings as a favour, in return for his brother’s arrest over the Barr hit. But though Cumberton was a high-profile target, police are treating his death as an accident. He had been working closely with another drug kingpin from Dublin, who had taken over the cartel’s operations in Spain. Sources told the Irish Sun: “He fell off a balcony; it is being treated as a tragic accident. He had been staying in different parts of Spain, with other cartel members, and was a close associate of Daniel Kinahan. “He was a player for the cartel in Spain, and this will be a huge blow to their operation over there.”

14th December - 20th December 2018 AT least half of Spain is tainted with polluted air, comprising excessive levels of particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and ozone, which affects some 15 million people. A pedestrian in Toledo will be breathing polluted air from a traffic jam in Madrid’s Gran Vía avenue. And in the Sierra Norte, outside of Madrid, hundreds of people from the capital spend their weekends there, believing they are enjoying fresh air, without realising it was one of Spain’s most polluted areas last year. Meanwhile, other rural areas, like Catalonia’s Plain of Vic, along with villages like Villanueva del Arzobispo in Jaén, Andalusia, have levels of contamination that break the EU air-quality regulations. These are just a few of the pollution areas which are, adversely, affecting the health of at least 15 million people in Spain, according to estimates. The most severely-affected areas are Madrid and Barcelona, but the regions of Andalusia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and Valencia are also battling high-risk levels. Spain is plagued by three main pollutants: nitrogen dioxide (NO2), caused by traffic, and, predominantly, a problem in big cities; PM10 particulate matter,
More than half of Spanish are being polluted
consisting of dust, ash, soot and similar substances, produced by traffic, as well as central-heating systems, industry and construction; and, finally, ozone, a pollutant linked to the others, which is prevalent during hot weather and can spread long distances. That is why areas in which the air could assumed to be clean, such as Madrid’s Sierra Norte, can be highly contaminated. Road traffic is responsible for more
than 50% of NO2 emissions, particularly diesel vehicles. Environmental organisation Ecologists in Action, using its own methodology, put the number of people in Spain affected by poor air quality last year at 17.5 million. Meanwhile, the Ecological Transition Ministry insists it is impossible to measure the effects on health with any precision. However, it says that it would produce data relating to health if it had population figures for the areas covered by each station, but this information is in the hands of each region. As far as the Spanish Government is concerned, the preliminary data on pollution levels in 2018 shows “a certain improvement”, and the climate has helped, because there has been more wind and rain. “It makes us think that
the measures taken by the authorities are working,” says a Government spokesman. But Miguel Ángel Ceballos, from Ecologists in Action, is sceptical. Although he recognises that the situation was worse before the economic crisis, he claims: “The economic recovery has been triggering the problem again since 2015, with an increase in the burning of fossil fuels, and the consequent emissions.” He adds that the authorities are not adopting adequate measures to reverse this. Yet the Ecological Transition Ministry recognises that the balance was negative, meaning the quality of air was worse than the year before. But whether it’s one or all of the pollutants, more than half of Spain does not meet EU air-quality regulations. “Breathing polluted air

affects our respiratory system in a number of ways,” says Ramón Fernández, a specialist in environmental issues for the Spanish Lung Society (Separ). “It aggravates chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and can lead to hospitalisation. “It can also trigger vascular problems, such as strokes and heart attacks. During pregnancy, it can cause breathing problems that affect the development of the foetus, and it is, also, potentially carcinogenic. “Lately, there has been a big drop in the density of particles, but all pollution at high levels is potentially damaging. “While pollution enters the body through our respiratory system, it moves quickly into other areas.” Fernández added: “These particles are able to penetrate our circulation, triggering inflammatory mechanisms that damage different organs. The worst affected are the lungs, the heart and the blood vessels.” Studying the health effects of pollution is challenging, but poor air quality never features on a death certificate. The effects are accumulative, and there is no obvious cause and effect!

Shock as 50% of Spanish would banish monarchy!
ALMOST 50% of Spaniards want to get rid of their monarchy, according to a new questionnaire for the Huffington Post. A YouGov poll found that 48% of Spain favours a republic, compared with just 35% who want to keep the royal family. As Spain celebrated 40 years of its constitution on Thursday, the study also revealed that a majority of Spaniards would like a vote on the future of the monarchy. The other 17% were not involved in the survey, choosing not to comment on proposed changes to the first article of the Spanish constitution, which says a parliamentary monarchy is “the political form of the Spanish State”. The poll, involving 1,002
people, was conducted between 2nd-5th November, and Spain’s youngsters were the most vehement in their support of a republic, with 59% of people aged 18-24 saying No to King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. Felipe had, initially, restored some credibility to Spanish royalty, following the abdication of his father Juan Carlos I in 2014. However, since the bearded king expressed negative views about a Catalonian independence challenge, his popularity appears to have dwindled. It is no surprise, therefore, that the same YouGov poll found that 64% in Spain’s region voted for a republic. As a couple though, the Spanish royals are still popular, and Letizia is lauded frequently in the media for her stylistic and youthful appearance, relative to other queens.

Puigdemont again aims for Catalan breakaway
CARLES Puigdemont, the former Catalonia President, has launched a proindependence organisation at a Belgium event. Puigdemont, who remains in Belgium after last year’s independence referendum and declaration, said the Council for the Republic
would work towards Catalonia’s secession from Spain. He was speaking in Brussels at an event, attended by his successor, proCatalan independence politician Quim Torra. Puigdemont stressed that the Council would work towards altering Spain’s Constitution, to allow for the creation of a de facto Catalan Republic. “The Spanish state won’t be able to do anything,” he
said in a Twitter post. The politician remains wanted in Spain on charges of rebellion, sedition and the misuse of public funds, in connection with last year’s Independence push. A European Arrest Warrant, issued by Spanish authorities, was dropped earlier this year after a German court ruled out extraditing the former head of Catalonia’s Generalitat to Spain.

When is your tax freedom day?
By Paul Montague
Partner, blevins Franks
IF you ever had the feeling that you have spent half your working life just paying tax, you are not far wrong. What with income tax.
national insurance/social security, capital-gains tax, VAT, council tax and so on, a considerable amount of our hard-earned income gets diverted to the taxman, each year. Even if you are lucky enough to be retired, you are still faced with tax on your savings, investments and pensions. Having paid so much tax all your life, you will not want to pay any more than necessary. Tax planning is an important part of protecting your wealth.
The tax burden of typical workers in the EU Each year, the Institut Economique Molinari measures and compares taxes payable across EU member states. While it focuses on employees, and how much tax and social security they pay, it illustrates the general tax burden of each country, and how they compare with each other. The study calculates a “taxliberation day” for each country, indicating how much of a year's work is devoted to paying taxes, as well as the average “real tax rate” for employees. The 2018 results reveal that, on average, taxes are actually going down, but only slightly. And it highlights that Europe's ageing population is putting pressure on pension and healthcare spending for governments. As the population ages, there are
fewer people in employment to pay for these costs, leaving taxpayers to plug the gap. How does Spain fare? According to the study, Spain's tax freedom day fell on 8th June, placing it eighth in the rankings. So Spanish employees worked for 159 days just to pay their tax bill. While this is the same as the last two years, it is a long way off the 19th May tax-freedom day we enjoyed, back in 2011. The average gross salary in Spain is 34,111 euros, but after the real tax rate of 43.31%, workers are only left with 19,337 euros to spend on themselves. The country with the latest tax-freedom day is France, with 27th July, and the highest real tax rate of 56.73%. Cyprus continues to have the earliest day on 27th March, two weeks ahead of runner-up Malta on 10th
April, with Ireland taking third place at 26th April. What about the UK? According to the study, the UK's tax-freedom day comes fourth, landing on 8th May, with a real tax rate of 35.08%. However, many think tanks undertake their own research to calculate their country's tax-freedom day, using different methodologies. While the Institut Economique Molinari looks at income tax, social security contributions and VAT, the UK's Adam Smith Institute (ASI) measures the entire tax take, including taxes that do not come directly out of the earner's pocket. This approach places the UK date three weeks late; the ASI calculates that the 2018 UK tax-freedom day landed on 29th May, the latest date since comparable records began, in 1995. What does this mean for taxpayers?
These remain taxing times for taxpayers, and not just for workers, as retirees are also faced with higher taxes. Of course, the study is just indicative of the average taxpayer, and higher earners will generally have a later tax-freedom day. In many cases, there are steps you can take to lighten your tax burden, especially on your capital investments and pensions. While we all have to pay our share of taxes, cross-border taxation is complex; do not risk getting it wrong or paying more than you have to. Take personalised, specialist advice on the compliant tax mitigation opportunities available in Spain and the UK; you may be surprised at how you can improve your tax situation. New mortgage law will be boost for customers By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
A NEW mortgage law was approved on Tuesday by the Congress of Deputies, to help customers avoid evictions. It also forces banks to pay mortgage expenses, as well as lowering mortgage amortisation (reducing the cost of each repayment). In addition, it points out that it is not obligatory, but an option, to contract products linked to the mortgage. Changes introduced to the Mortgage Law The new law has to match the European Regulation 2014/17/EU, and these are the most important modifications: Mortgage expenses The bank will pay all mortgage expenses, such as notary fees, registry fees, agent fees, Stamp Duty (AJD). However, it is expected that the bank will transfer these costs to
the customer by means of raising interest rates. The valuation fees will be paid by the customer. Customers’ protection There will be more protection for customers to avoid eviction. During the first half of the contract, there must be a non-payment of fees that reach 3% of the principal of the loan, or 12 monthly
payments. Thereafter, the mortgage can be enforced. From the second half of the contract, there must be a non-payment of fees that reach 7% of the principal of the loan, or 15 monthly payments. Repayment of mortgage advantages The new law wants to lower the costs of early repayment
of the mortgage, to equate Spanish legislation with the European directive. This measure has been approved, retroactively, for new mortgage repayments. It means that those who make an early repayment on their mortgage, from the entry into force of the law, may avail themselves of these new conditions.
But those who made an amortisation in the past (with the previous law in force), will NOT be able to claim or recover the money. Change to fix interest rate It will be easier and cheaper to change a mortgage with variable interest to fixed interest. The maximum bank commission for changing the rate will be 0.25% during the first three years. After that, it will be free. The bank will retain the right to accept or refuse the change of interest rate from variable to fixed. No surrogate commission It will be possible to surrogate and renovate a mortgage without bank commission. The bank will not charge a fee in these cases. Maximum delay interest The maximum delay interest, fixed in the contract, will be three times the official rate. It is anticipated that the new law will be introduced in March 2019. *Mariano E. Andrea Levy: Her Island Story. When Andrea Levy’s father Winston stepped off the Empire Windrush in July 1948, he had no idea that in time the ship’s name would come to describe a group of people betrayed by the British government or, indeed, that his daughter would become the voice of that generation. Her best-selling novel Small Island, about the experiences of Jamaican families integrating into postwar Britain, captured the imaginations of readers around the world and picked up nearly every award going upon publication in 2004. But Andrea’s story goes much further back than Small Island. Her earlier books, like Every Light In The House Burnin’ and Fruit Of The Lemon, explored questions of hybrid identity, providing rich details of a divided Britain in the second half of the 20th century along the way. And her most recent novel The Long Song traces these themes all the way back to 1830s Jamaica, where the abolition of slavery failed to solve the many iniquities of colonisation. As BBC One broadcasts a new adaptation of The Long Song, with an all-star cast, imagine... profiles Andrea Levy and the journey she has made to become one of our best loved contemporary novelists. Strictly Come Dancing - The Final e c i o h c BBC1, 18.30
The wait is finally over. After 13 amazing weeks of glitter, glamour and sensational performances, Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman present the Strictly Come Dancing Final live on BBC One. Fifteen celebrities entered the ballroom but now only four finalists remain. Each couple will perform two routines - one chosen by the judges and the other is the picked by the couple themselves. Each couple also performs a show dance in a bid to be crowned the Strictly champions. Shirley Ballas, Dame Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel-Horwood will judge the routines for the final time but the scores will be for guidance only and the winning couple will be decided by the viewers’ votes alone. The evening wouldn’t be complete without an extraordinary musical performance fit for the final from Michael Buble.

Long Lost Family Christmas Reunion c h o i c e ITV1, 21.00
Over the last eight years Long Lost Family has reunited over 200 relatives desperate to find that one person missing from their lives, to make their family complete. Now for the first time many of these families are brought together under one roof, to celebrate Christmas and the joy of finally being together, after the agony of years apart. Long Lost Family Christmas Reunion will find out what it means to spend your first Christmas with your loved ones and reflect on how lives have changed for people since finding their relatives, with some guests meeting new family members for the very first time during the programme. In the heart of London, preparations are underway for a family Christmas celebration with a difference, 120 family members are arriving for the very first Long Lost Family Christmas lunch, many having travelled across the globe from Nigeria to Australia and Barbados to Switzerland. Others are making their way from all over the United Kingdom. It’s a chance for our guests to share their experiences and stories together and for many, to celebrate Christmas with their long-lost loved ones for the first time. Presenters Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell are on hand to welcome everyone and ensure it’s a day they will treasure. Davina says: “This is a chance to catch-up on eight years of Long Lost Family, seeing you all here, knowing you are all telling each other each other’s stories is really lovely.” Nicky adds: “It is the biggest family Christmas lunch in the history of family Christmas lunches!” Among the guests are Sharon Harte and her sisters. Sharon’s search was for her birth mum but she was given the news that whilst her mum had sadly passed away, she has four sisters. She met three of them in the spring and the sisters are now able to celebrate their mum’s birthday and Christmas together for the first time this year. In an emotional moment, Sharon’s sisters surprise her with a special Christmas gift, her late mother’s eternity ring.

For the first time ever, Lee Mack’s multi award-winning hit show Not Going Out is going out live on BBC One this Christmas. With no room for slip-ups or mistakes (no pressure then) we join Lee (Lee Mack) and Lucy (Sally Bretton) live from their festively decorated living room, nervously discussing the Ding Dong Merrily On Live Christmas Spectacular - the Christmas variety show they’ve been strong-armed into organising to raise money for their children’s school. But things are rarely plain sailing for our duo, as they soon come to realise: with an animal impersonator as the only confirmed performer, quality acts are worryingly thin on the ground. Who will Lee and Lucy turn to? Surely Toby (Hugh Dennis) and uptight wife Anna (Abigail Cruttenden) can’t be roped in? With egg juggling and some knife throwing (CUT!) for good measure... what could possibly go wrong?

In Bear’s Mission with Gareth Southgate, the leader of the Three Lions squad will swap the football field for some of the UK’s toughest terrain and tackle the ultimate challenge, as he joins Bear on a mission across the wilds of Dartmoor. Gareth’s adventure begins when he is whisked away by Bear in a helicopter and taken to the rugged terrain that’s used by the Royal Marine Commandos for their gruelling training missions. Gareth’s grandfather was a Royal Marine and one of his great inspirations in life - and now he’s following in his footsteps, taking on military techniques in an arena where generations of Marines have been put to the test. In the first challenge, Bear and Gareth jump out of either side of the helicopter, with just a single rope to slide down. Perfect timing and balance are essential on their exit, to avoid destabilising the helicopter.

Is your home ready for the cold spell?
City Hall worker ran a mammoth drug empire ON the occasion of the Christmas period and beyond, maybe you have planned to travel to your country to visit family and friends.
A home insurance, therefore, is essential during this time of the year, because you will be leaving your home empty, and, in winter, extreme weather conditions are capable of wreaking havoc on your home even more, if you are far away! In view of this, you should bear in mind some things before you go away for your vacation, to keep your home safe and secure. Talking about your home insurance, it is important to make sure you have the cover you need, and that it remains valid whilst you are away. You should know that if you are away from home for more than a certain number of days, in the event of a loss, the claim coverage could be rejected if the home has been vacant for a period longer than stipulated in your policy. Thus, ensuring that your home-insurance provider is aware that the property will be vacant for a long period of time, and checking the period in your policy, can make all the difference, should the worst happen in your absence. On the other hand, there are many insurance companies that don’t cover wind perils. Liberty Seguros
does, but even if yours also covers them, you should talk to your insurance agent to determine if personal property, such as a swimming pool or your garden furniture, will be covered. With Liberty you can have the peace of mind that your garden furniture will be covered, even if it has been damaged by adverse weather conditions. But not all insurers are alike. Another of the threats to your home, arising during the winter season, is cold snaps, which can cause pipes to burst. Liberty Seguros, for example, will compensate you for the additional water consumption, due to a broken pipe, and they will pay for the repairs of the parts affected, in case your pipe bursts due to the cold snaps. However, replacing the entire pipe system can be costly for you, so it is always better to prepare for the unexpected! If this worries you, find out which areas of your house are most susceptible to freezing pipe problems, and begin taking preventative action. Another wintertime disaster could be that your roof collapses from the results of the heavy rains or blizzard, and a standard home insurance policy will usually cover the damage. However, most insurance companies will review the condition of your roof, to determine whether or not you were negligent, as they
determine the payout. The best thing to do is to keep updated records, including photos, of the condition of your roof, and any regular maintenance. By taking the necessary precautions and preparing your house for winter before you leave, you can avoid being tangled up in an insurance claim this winter season. Having your roof regularly shovelled, trimming threatening trees, finding burst water pipes, shutting off your water and cleaning your gutters are all things that can be done before you go away, to help prevent an unwanted disaster. Over 175,000 expat clients already chose Liberty as their insurance provider, and this figure grows almost every day, because of the excellent service and quality of cover clients receive. In order to achieve this, and to assist those who prefer a more personalised service and a face-to-face chat, Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents, dedicated to providing unbiased, friendly, expert advice. Speaking your own language, these brokers and agents will be pleased to help you as much as possible. Liberty Seguros is considered the expat’s number one choice in Spain. To find out more, visit www. libertyexpatriates.es. Or simply call 91 342 25 49.
A CIVIL servant, who ran a multi-millioneuro drug empire in southern Spain, has been arrested with 56 other people. Operation Albarraxín also pointed police in the direction of 10 tonnes of Moroccan hashish and 3.3m euros in goods, which they seized. The gang, led by the City Hall worker, imported 62 tonnes of hash a year to Costa del Sol. In August, Guardia Civil officers first noticed the “very active” gang, who employed speedboat captains to traffick drugs across the Strait of Gibraltar. The Guardia found drugs hidden in Manilva, Casares, San Enrique de Guadiaro,
Tesorillo, Estepona, Tarifa and San Roque, the waiting points from which the gang distributed the drugs across Europe. After a month-long operation by police, a judge investigating the case sent half the gang to prison. And, said a police spokesman: “It is one of the most important criminal organisations, dedicated to drug-trafficking between North Africa and Europe, through the coast of Andalusia.” Documents seized by police are being analysed by specialists, who are investigating another division of the gang for money-laundering. A source close to the investigation told Spanish daily El Pais: “What’s important is that everything has been dismantled.”

Minimum wage increase to be introduced shortly THE promised minimum wage rise for workers in Spain will be introduced later this month, which means a boost for over 6.3 million residents. At the start of 2018, 34.7% of employees in Spain earned the minimum wage or less, from the total 18.3 million who are on contracts, as opposed to selfemployed. This translates to an increase in minimum-wage earners of 1.1 million in a decade, despite the number of employees having fallen by a million in that time. Of those 6.3 million, the average income is around 7,400 euros a year. At present, the minimum wage for a full-time, 40-hour working week is 735.90 euros per month over 14 months – based upon the gradually-declining system of a double wage packet at Christmas and in August, which is rarely seen outside the public sector – being 10,302.60 euros a year or, in 12 monthly payments, 858.55 euros. As the income tax threshold starts at 12,000 euros, these amounts are net, as well as gross. Before this month is out, the minimum wage will rise officially to 900 euros in 14 monthly payments, equating to 12,600 euros, or 1,050 euros in 12 monthly payments. It is not clear whether this is the net or the gross figure, but assuming it is the latter, the average worker earning the new minimum wage will take home 964.50 euros a month if they receive 12 salaries a year rather than 14. Spain’s government believes this
will ease the financial pres-sure suffered by the lowest-earning households, and will also increase tax and Social Security (National Insurance) income for the State, as well as spending in general, which will even-tually lead to more jobs being created. The increase, of 22%, was not due to happen until the middle of 2019 as it would take that long for the budget to come into effect – and although pension increases at a minimum of the rate of inflation are also due to start from next summer, these would be backdated to January, whereas salaries would not. Now, though, the government has decided to bring the wage increase forward to December, meaning the first payment at the higher figure will be received by employees on or around January 1. To do so, it has had to draw up a Royal Decree, or Bill of Law. The wage rise was part of an agreement with the left-wing party Podemos as a condition of their approving the PSOE (socialist) government’s budget, and in accordance with this deal, will increase to 1,000 euros a month - 14,000 euros a year, being 1,167 euros a month in 12 payments if this is the net figure or 1,029 euros if it is the gross figure. Spanish president Pedro Sánchez initially hinted that if he could not obtain enough backing from opposition parties to approve the 2019 budget, he would consider calling a general election, although he has now clarified this will not necessarily be the case.
Yellow-vest mob put the block on French
ACTIVISTS, with a tax protest movement in France, blocked roads at several points on the French-Spanish border during the last weekend, amid on-going, antigovernment demonstrations in the country. Protesters from the “yellow-vest” movement cut off roads leading to the Spanish border towns of Irun in the Basque Country and La Jonquera, in Catalonia. Traffic, including lorries, were prevented from crossing into Spain while the blockades were staged. One incident saw a 60-year-old Spanish lorry-driver arrested in connection with a scuffle against protesters and police officers on the French side of the border. The blockades come as the activists, so-called because of the hi-vis clothes they wear
while demonstrating, cut roads throughout France and staged protests in Paris. Demonstrations began over France’s decision to hike duties on diesel, but the country’s Government has since backtracked. The movement, which has no hierarchical structure, or obvious leader, has grown to become opposed to the economic policies of French President Emmanuel Macron. He has sought to reform France through tax and spending cuts, which led protesters to dub him the “President of the rich”. Paris demonstrations have turned violent recently, and riot police paraded on the streets of the French capital at the weekend. Cars were left torched, and shopfronts smashed following the riots.

‘Distressed’ mum dumps her newborn in waste bin
Spain’s ‘Swedish model’ may abolish prostitution THE Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) is drafting a sweeping bill, covering 50 pages, to address the legal limbo affecting prostitution, which is neither regulated nor criminalised in the country.
A MOTHER claims she dumped her newborn daughter in a rubbish bin after becoming “overwhelmed and distressed” at giving birth, alone, on the floor of a San Sebastian apartment, in the Basque Country. The 28-year-old, who appeared in the local Gipuzkoa court on Monday, is charged with attempted murder and faces up to 20 years in prison. The court heard that on 22nd November 2016, CCTV captured a female wandering around the streets of San Sebastian old town at around midnight,

and putting something in a bin. Two women, who passed by later, heard the baby crying and called the police. They discovered the baby, with part of the umbilical cord still attached, wrapped in a blanket inside the waste bin. A police probe was launched to identify the woman on CCTV, and, following months of examining footage, along with interviews, officers found the suspect. The DNA samples of baby and defendant matched up, and the latter was arrested. Reports suggest the accused, who is being held in Martutene prison, appears “regretful and repentant”. She says she has no family in Spain, and has had no contact with the baby’s father.

Spain’s Government wants to penalise clients, and those who provide apartments for prostitution activities. But the sex workers themselves would not be targeted, because they would be seen as victims. The bill is inspired by the abolitionist model, pioneered by Sweden. Under the terms of the new legislation, “gentlemen’s clubs”, of which there are an estimated 1,500 in Spain, or three for every hospital, would be shut down through court orders. The new law seeks to cut demand by outlawing the purchase of sex. It also considers that human trafficking, for sex exploitation, is a form of gender violence. Sweden pioneered the abolitionist model with a 1999 law that penalised clients with as much as one-year prison sentences. In 2016, France introduced fines for people who purchase sex. And in Finland, the client is punished if the prostitute is the victim of a traf-
ficking ring. Other countries that go after the client include Iceland, South Africa, Canada, South Korea, Singapore and Northern Ireland. Prostitution is not regulated in Spain and Italy, and is, therefore, neither legal nor illegal. Yet the Spanish criminal code does consider pimping a crime. Several cities have their own bylaws, setting out fines for both clients and prostitutes. Experts estimate that Spain has a sex industry worth 3.7bn euros. And last year, police identified 13,000 women in anti-trafficking raids, saying: “At least 80% of them were being sexually exploited.” Government sources said the bill was still at a preliminary stage, and that there were three versions under consideration. The 50-page document includes 93 articles and several additional provisions, which would modify halfa-dozen existing laws and codes, including the Criminal Procedure Law and the Criminal Code.
The overall idea behind the initiative is to protect victims by “eradicating prostitution because of its close ties with human trafficking for sexual-exploitation purposes.” The draft document also considers creating a fund to compensate victims of trafficking. The PSOE heads a minority government, and, to secure congressional approval for its initiative, it will need additional support from 92 deputies to add to its own 84 lawmakers. Several other forms of human exploitation is considered by the preliminary draft, including forced labour, slavery, mendacity, organ extraction and forced marriages. Prostitution remains a divisive issue in Spain. In August, the first sex workers’ union, OTRAS, was registered with the Labour Ministry. But last month, the High Court struck down its bylaws, after considering that its activities could not be the object of a valid work contract.

There are a lot of good Sunday dinners in Tenerife, but none of them come anywhere close to Empire’s Sunday lunch, served from 1.30-5.30pm, with live music on the terrace. There really isn’t a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and many people agree, so booking in advance is a must! On the Sunday-lunch menu there is a selection of starters, and, for the main, you get a choice of four types of meat, each with their own selected accompaniments, plus all the normal Sunday dinner favourites. You can even go for The Big Roast, which includes all four meats. There is a selection of desserts including a good, British, rhubarb crumble, and a light cheesecake (if you have space). There is also a vegetarian alternative, so they can also have the full Sunday dinner experience, too. Last, but by no means least, they do a herb-crusted, 1kg prime roast rib (for two people), with all the trimmings. There is also a children’s menu, which is, basically, a smaller version of the adults’ menu, so they don’t feel left out. Taking a look at the menu, it was quite easy to decide; The Big Roast it was. This included 28-day, aged, sirloin beef, belly pork with blackpudding stuffing, rosemary and garlic lamb, and lemonand-parsley turkey.
You also had all the accompaniments; cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, minted peas and roasted parsnips. But it didn’t stop there. There were roasted and mashed potatoes,
carrots, runner beans, Yorkshire pudding and Empire gravy. Sitting with a group of family on the terrace, listening to the live singer, with a nice bottle of wine and watching
all the food go past, I came to realise exactly how much food you got on the plate - it was enormous! When the meal arrived, it looked and smelt amazing. It was beautifully presented, with good, separate portions of all the side dishes, to serve yourself. My daughter’s eyes lit up when she saw the Yorkshire pudding. It took up half her plate, and was beautifully crispy and golden brown. It was also served with extra gravy on the side, because you can never have too much Empire gravy. All the meat was perfectly cooked. The beef is served to your personal taste, so I went for medium and it was perfect. The turkey was moist and succulent, and the lamb was packed full of flavour. My favourite, though, was the belly pork. It was sticky and tasty, with perfect crackling, and the black-pudding stuffing served with it was rich and delicious. The mash was lovely and creamy, and the roast potatoes were just how I like them - golden brown and crispy on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. All the accompanying vegetables were very tasty
and cooked perfectly; no soggy vegetables here! The glue that ties the whole dinner together is the gravy. Get the gravy wrong on a roast dinner and it’s disastrous, but get it right, and it makes the whole meal. Well, Empire definitely has it right. I thought my mum made the best gravy, but, sorry mum... this tops it! Clearing the plate was a challenge, but nothing was left behind because it was so delicious. You don’t really worry how full you are; it has to be eaten. It’s a really nice atmosphere at Empire, so you can take your time, enjoying the afternoon and waiting for your food to go down, so you have room for dessert. There is an extensive wineand-drinks list to enjoy, and, with the normal, friendly, high standard of service from the team at Venture, nothing is too much trouble. So sit back, relax and enjoy. I will be back. I have already had a request from my daughter to go back to the place with the bestever Yorkshire pudding. I recommend you get a table booked, and don’t miss out.

Grapeful thanks to our ‘cooking’ wine ANYONE who lives in Spain, or visits the country regularly, will have no doubt about why it is virtually impossible to find imported wines. Yet with just about every grape variety on earth, prices ranging from 99 cents to several hundreds of euros, and wine regions in almost every Spanish province, you’ll find the perfect home-made tipple, however much you can afford. But why does Spanish wine have such a poor reputation beyond its own borders, especially compared with those of France, Italy, the US, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa? The answer is purely marketing. If you’re in the UK, you might occasionally see “Spanish wine”,
unbranded, on the shelves. If asked to name one, you’d probably hesitate and then say “Rioja”. If you’re in France, “Spanish wine” is also undefined when it’s on sale. It’s cheap, and sold purely for cooking! And in both countries, it is usually synonymous with budget plonk that needs mixing with lemonade. Yet Spanish wine is screaming out to be recognised, valued and understood. It needs to clear its name and rise on to the pedestal of the world’s top brands. And though seven types have reached the world’s top 100 list, only one is in the top 25, according to global booze bible Wine Spectator, in its 2018 edition. Three-quarters of the top 100 are from Italy, including the winning red, the Bolgheri-Sassicaia 2015, which retails at 216 euros a bottle, or from France or the US. The top 10 includes
Chiantis, Burgundys, Dom Pérignon Champagne, Aubert Chardonnay, Dopp Creek Pinot Noir, Sonoma Valley Bedrock Heritage, Le Vieux Donjon, and all from these three countries. In a rare coup, however, Spain has crept in at No.4 with its 890 Rioja Gran Reserva 2005, now, officially, the country’s best wine. Next on the list is at No.26, with the lowest-placed sitting at No.59. But if Spanish wines were better known, they would surely give their European neighbours a run for their money. Luckily, the top seven Spanish wines of 2018, according to Wine Spectator, are highly affordable. True, a little more than the pleasant, quality brands in supermarkets, which range from 1.50 to eight euros a bottle on average. But for globally-endorsed varieties, they are excellent value for money.

Leslie’s burning love for Tenerife! HERE at Keddy’s Entertainment, we often go out and about, experiencing new acts who are resident on the island.
They have achieved their dreams of living in the sun, entertaining the thousands of tourists who visit this beautiful and vibrant island, year after year. The following artiste is no different, and a tribute to The King himself, the legendary Elvis Presley. Leslie Moore, aka Leslie Elvis Moore, has now been established as one of the most popular and followed acts on the Tenerife circuit, having been nominated in the top four tribute acts, at the 2018 Tenerife Entertainment Awards. His drive and energy is second to none. By his own admission, he bills himself as an entertainer, rather than a singer. Leslie never fails to bring smiles and laughter to every single face in his audience, with his fabulous singing and superb, comedy timing. Even working seven days a week, Leslie never fails to step up to the plate to help others, assisting at charity events, and fundraising. Leslie was so upset by the collapse of a building in Los Cristianos some time ago, he set off to help, and raised a staggering 2610 euros to help the families left with nothing. Leslie started his working career at the age of 15, delivering coal in his local town of Bolton. Sadly, after 25 years, it was time to move on, and he was a removals man for the next 10 years. At the age of 43, Leslie made the decision to map out a new path to follow. This took him to Majorca, and a venture into entertaining people. It wasn’t easy for him, and was a real struggle. But he was not to
be beaten, and wouldn’t go back to working within the removals industry. Leslie was successful in achieving a part in the Inbetweeners film. Not bad for a coalman from Bolton! At the age of 43, he headed to Tenerife to visit his brother on holiday, for his birthday. Little did he know this was to become his permanent home, and a place where he would fulfil his lifetime ambition of becoming an all-round entertainer. So, six months later, and with their bags packed, Leslie and his partner Joy moved to their new home to start a new life. With his phone number scribbled on a scrap of paper, an Elvis
suit, and a few Elvis songs, he decided to give it one last go! After two weeks with no work, he finally got his first gig. Word soon spread that there was a new Elvis in town. This came just in time, as contingency funds were running very dry, and dwindling quickly. He explains how he met an amazing couple called Shaun and Karen King, who kindly offered to make him an Elvis jump-suit. They played a major part in making his dreams come true, and he most definitely would not be here today, if it were not for their support. Leslie would like to thank many people, in
particular Shaun, who is a professional singer and works at Amanda’s bar in Torviscas. He goes on to say that he is one of the nicest, kindest people he has ever come across, really helping Leslie to start his career in Tenerife. It took Leslie over three years to become firmly established on the island, and, after seven years of performing daily, one of his highlights was being nominated at the TEAs 2018 for the Best Tribute Act. It really did go on to make his year. He felt a strong sense of achievement, and would like to thank all the lovely people out there who voted
for him. It was very much appreciated. Over the years, he has built up a fan base of genuinelylovely people. In fact, quite a few have become more like family to him! After leaving Bolton 13 years ago, Leslie has never looked back. He remembers friends and associates laughing at the fact that he was going to actually pack up and attempt to work abroad. That feeling of hurt spurred Leslie on, and he has definitely gone on to prove the sceptics wrong! Those sounds of laughter have fizzled out, and been replaced by applause. Leslie told us here at Keddy’s Entertainment headquarters that he is blessed to be able to live on a beautiful island, own a property, and be surrounded by wonderful friends. He has never been happier. He just wishes, in his heart, that his parents were here today to see his success, and all he’s achieved. He would like to say a big thank-you to Tenerife and all his beautiful friends, for helping him to fulfil his dreams. If he could offer any advice to anyone thinking about taking that leap of faith, then it would be “don’t let anything in this world ever hold you back from following your dreams”. So, why not take a leaf out of Leslie’s book and follow your dreams, and join us out here living those dreams? We are often on the lookout for new and upcoming talent, from acts to hotel animation staff. If you think you have what it takes to live in the sun and work hard, turning your dream into a reality, e-mail us at info@ keddysentertainment.com But, for now, it looks like Elvis is not only in the building, but here to stay, in Tenerife.

CD Tenerife
Tenerife get the point, but there’s little cheer
WHAT looked on paper as though it could have been a boring, goal-less draw last Friday at the Heliodoro, was far from it. There were goalmouth scrambles, clearances off the line, penalty claims, and shots galore… in fact, everything but a goal! Tenerife had 20 shots and still couldn’t score, causing coach Oltra more needless headaches as they remain firmly in the bottom half of the table. Tenerife came out stronger from the off, taking less than a minute for their first effort, a Malbasic header flying over the bar. And three minutes later, Milla forced a good save from Álvaro Fernández in the away goal. Good work from Montañés in left midfield kept up their pressure, but Extremadura, who never appeared to worry, had their first real attack after 15 minutes. But Zarfino’s free header from a corner was cleared off the line by Suso, at the near post. Then, as Tenerife averted the still-present danger, the visitors hit back with a long shot from Enric Gallego, which Dani had covered as it went just wide. From here on the game was fairly evenly balanced, although there was always a feeling that Tenerife were more dangerous
CD Tenerife 0 Extremadura 0
on the counter-attack, as opposed to build-up play from the back. Along the way, the match hardened, tempers frayed, and the game lost pace, because of several interruptions. Ironically, in the first half, most fouls were committed by Extremadura (9), although CDT picked up more yellow cards (3) from only five infractions. Towards the end of the
half, a Montañés shot after 34 minutes, and Naranjo’s counter-attack six minutes later, were the only action anywhere near either goal. After the break, the dynamics of the game changed, as Tenerife took over the pace and possession with some good, progressive play, yet they were unable to create any clear-cut chances. Meanwhile, Extremadura forward Roberto messed
up a one-on-one with keeper Dani Hernandez after a superb ball over the top from Zarfino. But Olabe completely missed it and Dani saved easily. In the 76th and 77th minutes, Naranjo and Nano had good chances for the home team, but their shots were kept out by Fernández. From this point, it turned into a game of two fouls. The first was by the halfway line as Naranjo and Chuli chased a 50/50 ball. And, as they tangled, Naranjo’s trailing arm clipped the Extremadura defender on the head. To say he made the most of it is an understatement as he rolled around the floor, faking agony, while the ref showed Naranjo a yellow card.
Although the foul had little impact on the match, it means that Naranjo will miss the derby against Las Palmas. The next chance, certainly more clear-cut, should have resulted in a Tenerife penalty. Nano made a break down the left wing and crossed, picking out Malbasic in front of goal, only for the ball to be halfcleared by Borja Granero in defence. As the ball looped in the air, Joao went for it only to be bundled to the floor by Alex Barrera, in what seemed to be a clear penalty to everyone in the stadium, except the referee! In the dying seconds, Malbasic played in Nano with the goal right in front of him, in the hope that the striker would get a touch to put the ball past the Extremadura keeper, who’d had a good game. But to no avail. The referee blew his whistle and Oltra saw two more points disappear at the Heliodoro. Tenerife had again battled to the end, and defended well, but they just couldn’t score! Malbasic is still their stand-out player of the season, and Naranjo will be sorely missed as Tenerife head to the Estadio de Gran Canaria on Sunday for a must-win derby match against Las Palmas. Can they? Yes! Will they? Fingers crossed!
Football
Barca’s influential leader was club’s money-maker JOSEP Lluís Núñez, Barcelona Football Club’s veteran chairman, has died at the age of 87, following a long illness.
Núñez, from the Basque Country, who founded a building and construction company, joined FC Barcelona as its leader in 1978 and stayed in the role for 22 years, until 2000. His best decision was, arguably, that of taking on Johan Cruyff as trainer, under whose auspices Barça went on to win its first
UEFA Euro Championship, in 1992. In total, the club won 14 titles with Núñez in the chair, including seven League trophies. Núñez was also a pioneer of money-making for the club, through his management of televising matches and retailing official merchandise. Barça’s Camp Nou stadium had two major extensions during Núñez’s reign, and the MiniEstadi (mini-stadium) and Barça Museum and Barça Foundation were also built, as well as the land purchased for the club’s future sports centre,
the Ciutat Esportiva, or Sports City. But Núñez was imprisoned for six years and fined two million euros in 2011, after the Provincial Court of Barcelona proved that both he and his son, José Luis, bribed tax inspectors with nearly a million euros, to enable them to avoid declaring a total of 13.1m euros in duties between 1991-1999. The sentence was later reduced to two years and two months, and the fine cut to 1.5m euros. In Spain, a sentence for a first offence of under
two years does not have to be served, but Núñez’s conviction was two months over this limit, so he went to jail in 2014 until 2016. Despite this blot on his copybook, Núñez is considered to be the best thing ever to happen to Barça, and also a major player in its success as one of Spain’s top two clubs, along with Real Madrid. Tributes have poured in on social media, and FC Barcelona itself said on Twitter that their late chairman was a “key figure in the club’s contemporary history”.

Gaffers catch up easily! IN the league’s only Division 1 catch-up game, a depleted Gaffers team still proved too strong for Ourplace Playboys, going home with an 8-0 victory in their hunt for honours. The Loch-In Bullseyes kept up their winning ways in Division 2, edging past Ourplace Breakaways 5-3, despite Steve’s 120 check-out for the Silencio boys, during an excellent
great night for com-pany and darts. Palms Sports Bar strolled to a 7-1 home win against Naughty Nautas, with John hitting a maximum for Palms. Sundowners played host to Scooters ‘B’, who had the upper hand, winning 5-3 in a close match that could have gone either way. Emerald Lounge ‘A’ welcomed Clouseau’s and took the spoils 5-3 in an entertaining clash. Good luck to all those competing in the Canarian Weekly Handi-cap competition tonight (Friday).

Will 2019 World Cup be free of corruption? THE head of cricket´s world body is confident of a corruption-free 2019 World Cup, with the sport working overtime to disrupt criminals who attempt to fix matches. David Richardson (pictured), chief executive of the International Cricket Council, has also called on national governments to do more to tackle match-fixing, which has affected lucrative, Twenty20 leagues, as well as international matches. Richardson said: “The ICC anti-corruption unit is trying to be much more pro-
active in disrupting these criminals, who are travelling the world trying to cor-
rupt the game. “Working hand in hand with the lawenforcement agencies will help us do that, so we are very confident that we will keep the World Cup corruption- free.” He added: “We are persuading governments to introduce legislation, which can make attempts to fix cricket matches a criminal offence, and put these people behind bars.” But the ICC chief is fully aware that there are ongoing investigations into corruption and match-fixing. Sri Lanka bowling coach Nuwan Zoysa was the latest
to face suspension, in October, over accusations of match-fixing. Former Sri Lankan opener and ex-selector Sanath Jayasuriya was also charged with failing to co-operate with a match-fixing probe, and concealing information in October. The 2019 World Cup is scheduled to take place in England and Wales, from May to July. Richardson, 55, who is a former South Africa wicketkeeper, also reiterated the ICC´s interest in taking cricket to the Olympics. The vast majority of ICC
members are keen to feature the sport at the quadrennial event, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has its reservations. “We have ambitions to see cricket in the 2028 Olympics, but that’s easier said than done,” admitted Richardson. “We need to convince the International Olympic Committee.” The only time cricket featured at the Olympics was in 1900, with just two men’s teams competing, and Great Britain defeated host nation France to take the gold.
