No escape this time for escaped fugitive

Continued from Front

The 33-year-old wanted fugitive, from the Greater Manchester area, has been arrested by National Police in Tenerife, several months after going on the run. Williams, whose daring escape 12 years ago was made to look like a kidnapping, was later caught and jailed for 10 years in 2010. But he went on the run again in November 2018, after being released from prison on licence. The fugitive, from the Salford suburb of Lower Broughton, was arrested in a Tenerife hotel, not named by police, and is believed to have appeared before a judge in Madrid last Sunday, as part of an extradition hearing. It was not clear, though, whether he had agreed to be flown back to the UK, or was opposing extradition. Spanish police released footage of heavily-armed

officers arresting him. A spokesman for the National Police, who did not name Williams in a statement, confirmed: “Officers have arrested one of the members of a gang, which robbed banks and security vans, using firearms. “The detainee, who had committed his crimes in the UK, was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant. He had reached Spain using the passport of a relative, to whom he bore a striking resemblance. “On March 21 2007, he was arrested following a robbery in Swinton, Greater Manchester. He was taken to a police station but managed to hide a phone in his clothes, which enabled him to maintain contact with the other members of the gang. The following day, when he was being taken to court, the van he was in was attacked by members

of the gang outside a court in Salford. The masked men, armed with knives, managed to free him. “Six days later, he participated in an armed robbery on an armoured security van. He was arrested again and sentenced to 10 years in prison. But in November 2018, he managed to flee again while he was on licence.” The Tenerife hotel, in which he was detained, has not been named, but the arrest is understood to have occurred on 2nd July, although police

Violent young robbers are caught on camera

POLICE officers are hunting for two young men, wanted for a violent robbery they committed in Arona on 7th July.

They were captured on camera, threatening a shop worker on his own, at the

24-hour shop in Valle San Lorenzo. Officers saw a knife being wielded by one of the men to intimidate the shop worker, while his partner threw objects directly at him, forcing the man to hand over the takings. The employee protected himself with a small stool, using it as a barrier between

him and the knife blade. The incident was over in a matter of seconds, the assailants leaving the premises with the till’s contents. The thieves, caught on camera, are extremely clear, and, though they were wearing balaclavas, officers are confident they will be identified, quickly.

went public with it only last Sunday. Services company GSL, responsible for Williams’s transfer when he escaped in March 2007, described the incident at the time as “very serious”. It said the van was waiting to go through a barrier to enter the court’s secure car park, when it was targeted. The men slashed one of the van’s front tyres, before punching the driver and threatening a female security officer.

A GSL spokesman said at the time: “Our prisoner’s custody officers have been threatened with violence, and one has received injuries, which, we think, are as a result of being punched.” He added: “This is a very unusual incident. When this level of extreme violence is offered or used, there is very little we can do.” Williams was featured on a Crimewatch appeal soon after his escape, and crime youth-worker Clare Greenhalgh was later suspended from her job. She then received a suspended prison sentence after it emerged that she had assisted Williams while he was on the run, following his security-van escape. The woman was caught out by a photo, showing her and Williams sitting on her sofa, which she had pinned to her fridge, and another of him eating pizza.

Not quite what the driver had in mind A CAR, which had been parked badly,

with the handbrake off, rolled into the sea in the Plaza de Europa area of Puerto de la Cruz.

Images of the water-sodden car intrigued several people, and crowds attended the area to see the floating vehicle, and witness its retrieval. It wasn’t long before a heavy-duty, pick-up truck arrived, and, successfully, lifted the car from the water.

Columbian imprisoned for the murder of a taxi-driver A COLUMBIAN man, found guilty of murdering 64-year-old San Isidro taxi driver Gabino, last Wednesday, has been imprisoned, provisionally. He appeared on Tuesday morning in the Granadilla courts, where the judge handed the 20-yearold a provisional prison sentence, without bail or communication, at least until the investigating officers determine the incident’s forensics. The man, who was transported to the Tenerife 2 Prison by a convoy of Guardia Civil officers, had his face covered when he arrived at the courts. The victim’s furious daughter, who saw him arrive, shouted at him, displaying her

anger and indignation. What is known about the man is that after he murdered Gabino, he then escaped by stealing a neighbour’s bike, which was parked in

the garage. The murderer is a resident of El Fraile, Arona, and the National Police searched his home last Sunday. Investigators confirmed that he had been

living here for less than a year, gaining entry into Spain with the help of his Columbian aunt. In that time, he had already been arrested three times for

committing various crimes. But, during Tuesday’s hearing, the young Columbian maintained his rights by declaring “no comment”. The murder took place in the communal garage of the taxi-driver’s home, at Edificio San Miguel, Calle Los Gonzales, where he and his long-time partner had moved, recently. He had been on the night shift in the days leading up to his death, which meant he would have finished work between 3-4am last Wednesday. His body was discovered at 6.30am by neighbours living in the block. He was battered to death, with numerous injuries, caused by a beating, along with several burns to his body. Guardia Civil officers believe he was tortured, severely, before being killed.

Off-duty friends save Early-hours shock a homeless man’s life for French tourist A MOROCCAN man, aged 20, was arrested by National Police and charged with ripping a gold chain from a tourist’s neck, violently, in the early hours of last Monday. The incident happened in Gran Canaria’s Playa del Ingles, and a security guard at a nearby shopping centre contacted the police at

5am to confirm that he had detained the man. A patrol car was at the scene in no time, and officers questioned the French victim, who told officers exactly what the security guard had already informed them. He also told them that the chain was worth an estimated 600 euros. After searching the Moroccan, who had no known convictions, the gold chain was retrieved and returned to its owner.

Driver’s heart-attack death

AN off-duty National Police officer, together with his friend, a male nurse, who was also on a day off, saved the life of a homeless man. They saw the fallen person in a lifeless state after he had, presumably, taken an overdose. The incident happened on 26th June, close to the Santa

Cruz suburb of Barranco de Santosa, when the officer was passing by in his car with his pal. They were alerted by a few homeless people shouting for help, saying there was a dead body lying across the pavement. The officer parked his car at a nearby bus-stop and they noticed the individual, with several used syringes alongside him, and bloodied gauzes inside a bottle next to him.

They could see that he wasn’t breathing and was also cold, so the nurse checked for his pulse, which he eventually found. The pulse was weak, so he immediately administered CPR, and managed to get him breathing again, keeping him stable until further help arrived. The homeless man was taken to Candelaria Hospital, where he was admitted for further treatment.

A DRIVER died from a heart attack last Saturday after coming off the road, into a La Palma ravine, and being trapped in the car. The Emergency Services were called, and fire-fighters, who were sent to the area, rescued the driver. But despite the ambulance crew efforts, and those of a local doctor from a nearby health centre, they were unable to save the person.

Mum and son rescued from quad-bike plight

A MOTHER and son, enjoying an excursion on an off-road quad bike in the Icod de los Vinos area of Fuente Santa forest, went off the specific route, accidentally, and drove down a mountain side.

The Guardia Civil were alerted, and, on arrival, were

welcomed by several anxious onlookers. Officers noticed the couple’s yellow quad, practically at the foot of the mountain, surrounded by rocks, then saw the victims, who appeared to be injured. They climbed down to help them, immediately, and realised that the mum had suffered serious bruising. She also had a painful left leg, while her son, who was covered with cuts and

bruises, from head to toe, complained of a pain in one arm. A team of fire-fighters and medics, summoned to assist, immediately began a rescue operation from the precarious area. Once clear of the slope, the mum and son were assessed by the medics, who determined that they needed further treatment, and took them to a nearby hospital.

Scotland company wins €3.6m hydrogen project

LOGAN Energy has been tasked with designing and building a hydrogen generation and refuelling station, for the Tenerifebased project.

The Scottish clean-energy solutions provider has been chosen as the hydrogen technology partner for the €3.6m, EU-funded, renewable-fuels scheme. The SEAFUEL project, co-financed by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, through the European Regional Development Fund, intends to pave the way for renewableenergy policies to promote clean and sustainable transport systems. Logan Energy, which specialises in delivering hydrogen technologies, has been given the job of designing and building a hydrogen generation and refuelling station for the project. The refuelling station will see

renewable resources, specifically solar power, being used to convert seawater into hydrogen. The station’s construction is underway at Logan Energy’s Technology Centre, in the East Lothian village of Wallyford, and will be deployed to Tenerife at the end of the year. Bill Ireland, Logan Energy CEO, said: “This project is unique in that it examines the conversion of seawater into hydrogen, with the specific purpose of being used as transport fuel. “It’s important to remember that this project is hugely significant, not just for remote communities in Europe, but around the world. “The islands and their inhabitants rely on imported fossil fuels, but can, in fact, become partially or wholly selfsufficient, in terms of energy.” He added: “The SEAFUEL project will go a long way to facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Men smashed their car into parked vehicle to clear way

A MAN aged 24 was arrested by the National Police after damaging a parked vehicle in Adeje, along with another man, yet to be identified.

The reason they attacked the vehicle was because it was blocking their exit from an underground car-park. A National Police statement says the driver has been charged with irrational behaviour, by causing unreasonable damage to another person’s property. But he told officers, who are looking for his companion, that he felt he had a right to

damage the car because it was in his way. He will receive a fine or prison sentence of between 6-12 months, as will his friend, when caught. Officers say the pair shoved the badly-parked car out the way so they could exit the underground car park, causing damage adding up to around €800. Sources believe the car owner alerted the police, after realised his vehicle had been damaged, intentionally. The car-park’s security cameras caught the wayward men in action, even to the extent of seeing the handbrake being released to allow their vehicle to roll into the parked car.

NEWS IN BRIEF New Liverpool flights Rogue driver’s TF-1 lunacy to Tenerife this winter FIVE people ended up needing medical assistance after three traffic accidents, caused by a driver speeding the wrong way on the TF-1 last Saturday night. The Guardia Civil, as well as the National and Local Police, collaborated to halt the rogue driver, who was arrested.

Judge condemns the bare facts

A SPANISH court has ordered a haulage firm to remove the advertising image of a naked woman from its trucks, after it had been denounced in 2016 for its raunchy mascot, by the Association of Communication Users. The Benavent Transportes Frigorificos vehicles are emblazoned with a busty blonde, showing her breasts and backside. And the Ciudad Real-based company’s raunchy picture, says Judge Carmelo Ordoñez Fernandez, who ordered its removal, “encourages the objectification of women”.

Driver’s fails booze test

TWO people were found by the Local Police after abandoning their car in the early hours of last Monday morning, after the driver had lost control and crashed into two other vehicles. The car was unearthed in Calle San Francisco Javier, in Tenerife’s Santa Cruz capital, and Local Police soon found the two men and questioned them. The driver, unable to produce his licence for the officers, was given a drug/alcohol test, the latter proving positive. He has since been charged with crimes against road safety.

Teenager butted by zoo ram

A BRITISH teenager, butted by a ram at Benidorm’s Terra Natura zoo, was so shocked that she was up all night vomiting. The 16-year-old said the male mouflon “charged” her after the corn kernels she had purchased ran out. She was left with a hefty swelling on her leg and had to go to the zoo’s medical centre for treatment. “There was absolutely no one supervising the animals,” said the girl’s mother, Jennifer Aitchinson. “Imagine if my daughter had been a toddler?” Terra Natura spokesman Roberto Cobollo confirmed that the area, which features mouflons, goats and deer, was unsupervised. But he added: “There is a warning sign, urging parents to be vigilant with their children.”

Blaze can’t harm aquarium

EUROPE’S largest aquarium, featuring 45,000 animals, was evacuated when a fire broke out at the Oceanografic de Valencia on Tuesday. The blaze started at 10.30am, reportedly, with 1,400 customers inside. But no animals were evacuated, or harmed, because it took place at the entrance to the hall. Tom Parker, 38, on holiday in the city with his family, said the fire was “pretty bad”, telling the Mirror Online: “We started to queue, and looked up and saw massive plumes of black smoke and then the fire. “There was a strong smell of plastic in the air, but the evacuation was calm, and the authorities handled things well.” The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes, and one of the workers said: “The police asked for calm, especially for the children who were inside. We are very happy, even surprised, about how well the operation was carried out.”

WINTER flights to Tenerife will operate, twice weekly, from Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport (LJLA) as part of its 2019-20 season.

The service begins on 30th October and will be easyJet’s

fifth new route from the city in the last 12 months. It will also be the first time the budget airline has operated flights to Tenerife from Liverpool, complementing their existing Canary Island portfolio of flights to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Paul Winfield, LJLA’s Director of Aviation Development,

said: “We are delighted to secure this latest new route to Tenerife. “Holiday-makers from across the North West and North Wales will be able to benefit from this new winter sun service.” One-way flights are on sale now, from £49.99 per person.

Sacred Gran Canarian location is added to World Heritage Site

UNESCO has declared that the Risco Caído and the sacred mountains of Gran Canaria are being added to the list of World Heritage Sites. The pre-hispanic settlement dates back to the Guanches, the indigenous population living on the islands before the 1402 Castilian conquest. The 18,000 hectare site joins the other 48 “declared” heritage sites across Spain.

Mum dumps kids and baby to be with a new boyfriend

9 CW

Electricity bills are not quite such a shock now ELECTRICITY bills dropped in price last month, thanks to a reduction in rawmaterial costs, making them considerably lower than a year ago.

A MOTHER, aged 36, has been arrested by the National Police for abandoning her three children at home, to meet her new boyfriend.

A call was made to the police at 11.20pm last Friday by a concerned caller, aware that the three kids, aged 14, 12 and an eightmonth-old baby, had been left on their own. Upon arrival, the police saw one child leaning out of a window, who confirmed that he was home alone with his two brothers. He told officers that his mum had gone out, and, when

asked about his father, he said they were separated. The policemen soon discovered that the mother had dumped the three children, on several occasions, to see her partner. While the officers took the children into custody, they began locating the mother, and, soon afterwards, discovered her in his company. She was questioned, and, once she had revealed who she was and what she had done, the wayward mum was charged with child abandonment. Fortunately, all three children are still together, in the custody of direct family members.

Guardia officer is linked to drug-smuggling gangs A SENIOR Guardia Civil officer, suspected of working with gangs to smuggle drugs through the Campo de Gibraltar area, has been arrested in the Andalucian city of Algeciras. But the Unified Association of Guardia Civil officers (AUGC) argues that the officer, a captain in the Judicial Police, should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. The officer is accused of disclosing secrets, and misconduct in public office, as well as belonging to an organised criminal entity. The police union, which said

it was “deeply concerned” about the arrest, added that the case would show how strongly organised crime had infiltrated into public bodies, if proven. “The depth of the threat of drug-trafficking in Cadiz Province is of such magnitude that it requires a permanent, comprehensive security plan that addresses the situation,” said the AUGC. The union also claimed that Interior Ministry measures taken until now have been “absolutely ineffective” in dealing with the issue.

A typical household energy bill came to €54.20 for the month of June, a fall of 1.56% on prices for May, and of 9% on those of June 2018. The actual savings, based on the average monthly bill of €54.20 for June this year, were 86 cents from May, and €4.87 from June last year, a period when electricity prices for consumers were beginning to soar, causing widespread public concern and creating a major challenge for María Teresa Ribera, who was then brand-new Energy Minister. Bill reductions for last month were largely the result of

wholesale energy prices having dropped by 19.7%. But not all this percentage would have been passed on to the consumer because of the mixed sources of power, renewable and conventional, which end up becoming household fuel. Gas has gone down by 57%, year-on-year in the wholesale

market, but is forecast to rise again by the end of the summer. Nuclear and gas sources of electricity continue to be the largest, used in almost equal measures and making up around half the mix, with the rest coming from hydraulic, wind and solar generation.

Russian man hurt badly in 15-metre balcony fall

A RUSSIAN man was seriously injured last Sunday, after jumping 15 metres from a third-floor apartment balcony in Tenerife’s coastal town of Playa Paraiso, on to the main road. The emergency services were informed of the

42-year-old’s fall just before 8am, and the caller requested an ambulance, which was dispatched to the scene immediately. Officers from the Local Police and Guardia Civil were already in the vicinity, on stand-by. But it soon

became apparent to medics that the victim had suffered serious injuries. He was taken directly to Candelaria Hospital, in Santa Cruz, for further treatment and close observation, after being admitted.

WHEN it comes to following the rules, Spain comes bottom of the list according to the European Union, which draws them up.

Spain has the most ongoing cases (97) for failing to comply with EU rules, or not applying them correctly, followed by Germany (80) and Belgium (79). Best behaved, with the fewest cases, are Estonia (27), Denmark and Finland (32 each), according to a report published by the European Commission. In detail, 48 of the Spanish cases are down to the bad or incorrect implementation of European standards, 36 to their late application and 13 for violating European standards. In the latter case, the countries with the highest number of open infringements for non-compliance with EU rules are Italy (22), Belgium (21) and France (18), while the countries with the lowest number of open infringements are Finland and Estonia, which have just three open cases each. At the end of 2018, some 1,571 cases were opened against governments for noncompliance, or incorrect application of European rules, which was 0.8% more than the previous year (1,559). Firemen pay funeral costs of brain-cancer youngster FIRE-FIGHTERS have covered the funeral costs of a young boy with brain cancer, after carrying him up and down the stairs to his home every day.

Benjamin, just seven, died after doctors discovered last October that he had a brain tumour, which paralysed the right side of his body. It meant that his mother was unable to carry him up the four flights of stairs to their apartment, where there was no lift. This led the Marbella firefighters to step in, carrying him up and down every day in the Avenida General Lopez Dominguez block. “He captivated us with his smile,” said Jose Perez, one of the local fire-fighting heroes, who helped the lad. Despite Benjamin’s diagnosis, he still attended school, and the servicemen

were there to take him down the stairs at 10am, returning at 2pm to get him back up. “One morning, we had to run off because there was a fire, but then we came back so that he would not miss class,” Perez also told the Diario Sur newspaper. Members of the Sho-Dan gym, near the family’s home, also helped out with some of Benjamin’s care, after his mum, who also has a 12-year-old daughter, lost her job last year. The firefighters and others, who had set up a fund to rehouse the family, will now use money for Benjamin’s burial. “It has been very hard to lose him,” they added.

The Commission also sent Spain the highest number of reasoned opinions across the EU, adding up to 19 out of 157. These are the last warnings for a country to make the required changes, be-

fore taking the case to the EU Court of Justice, which decided 32 cases in 2018. In all but one case, it ruled in favour of the Commission, while one case was won by Denmark. Spain lost three cases in 2018 before the European Court of Justice, as did Germany, Greece and Austria. Only Poland lost more cases (4). As for public complaints against countries received by the European Commission, Spain is in second place, with the highest number of citizens’ complaints (486), only behind Italy (633). The majority of complaints filed by citizens against Spain relate to justice and consumer protection (142), employment (99) and the environment (57), according to the report. In total, Brussels received 3,850 new complaints in 2018, the highest number since 2014. The majority were related to justice and consumption (943), the internal market

(627) and employment and social affairs (487). Spain also has the highest number of open infringements of the rules applicable to the internal market, according to another report on the application of internal market rules in the European Economic Area. Spain has 52 pending cases, 11 of them new, and more than double the average, which was the same as in 2014. The most problematic sectors are the environment (20 cases, half in relation to waste management and water protection and management) and transport (eight cases, half in relation to air transport). Half of the Spanish cases have been open for a long time, including one regarding air transport, for more than 13 years, another on air pollution, which has been open for 10 years, and another 22 between three and eight years.

Irishwoman robbed in hospital is left furious IRISH expat Paula Brody, a 75-year-old Dubliner, was planning this week on calling in the police, after being robbed in a Costa del Sol hospital. She woke up from a serious leg operation to find that her Smart phone and charger had been stolen from her bedside table at the Hospital Costa del Sol. Paula, a former admissions boss at Dublin’s Institute of Education, told online newspaper the Olive Press how her “whole ward” had been robbed during the night. “I was devastated to wake up alone in my bed, in pain and unable to move, and also unable to contact any of my family or friends,” she said. Paula, who lives in Manilva, had been rushed into hospital after suffering a horrific fall last week. The pensioner suffered a broken tibia and fibula, as well as having a deep gash in her leg, when she fell down a friend’s stairs. She had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, and

was quickly sedated and rushed in to surgery. The Irishwoman believes the thefts, which included other phones and jewellery, were carried out by two teenage boys, around 15, who were seen by the patient in the bed next to her. The woman told her the two lads had fled when questioned what they were up to. “Who knows if it were them,” added Paula, who moved to Spain two months ago. “Whatever happens, do not leave anything on show because the security is seriously lacking there. It seems anyone can simply enter and wander around.” But apart from the loss of her Samsung phone, she insisted

that the medical care and nursing was “excellent”. “It was fantastic, but the poor nurses are overworked, and cannot look out for your belongings,” she added. When the Olive Press asked security how many people were robbed that night, reporters there were met with a shrug. Meanwhile, the hospital has refused to give Paula a formal letter, confirming the phone has been stolen, making it difficult to report the issue to police and her insurers. “But I am going to make sure this case is dealt with,” she said. “The police will find out all about it!” Hospital chiefs refused to comment.

Driver drowned in flooded river Three Spanish universities are now ranked in top 20 IN a recent survey carried out by the Times Higher Education magazine, three Spanish universities were ranked in the EU’s top 20, with one just being beaten by Oxford and Cambridge in the UK.

The 2019 European Teaching Ranking was conducted after 125,000 students were interviewed on their opinions of universities around Europe, taking into account educational quality, student satisfaction and the relationship of young people with their teachers, and the learning environment.

The list is, predominantly, filled with UK universities. But the University of Navarra reached third position, thanks to its dedication to meeting students’ needs. Navarra principal Alfonso Sánchez-Tabernero said: “We measure everything. We analyse what the students value the most, and the complaints they make. What they say can be improved, and we do a lot of surveys with the students. Any teacher who does not perform well is told, and we take measures.” Also making the list was the University of Barcelona and the University of Madrid. Spanish universities have come under scrutiny recently after a study, conducted

by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain, showed that students who obtain an honours degree are not guaranteed a specialist career. In fact, 37.1% of graduates are employed in low-skilled jobs, which is much higher than the European average. Education Minister Francisco Michavila said: “The educational quality standards are high and the academic programmes are very similar, which shows that there is no problem in the universities.” He added: “This leads us to believe that the problem lies with the Spanish employment system as a whole, which is a much larger, more complex issue.”

THE body of a driver was found, after being washed from his car when it was caught up in floods, after a river burst its banks in the Spanish region of Navarra. Tafalla, a town with more than 10,000 inhabitants, was completely cut off when the Cidacos river overflowed. Fire-fighters found the body near Moriones, in the municipality of Ezprogui (Navarra), after intense rains caused flooding in several towns in the region. A major storm raged from early Monday afternoon,

and, as the river flooded, Mercadona supermarket workers in Tafalla had to take refuge on the roof. They were then rescued by helicopter. According to the Navarra Government, at 5.40pm on Monday, the river was a depth of just 1.1 metres. By 10.30pm, it had reached 3.71 metres. The force of the flood-waters swept cars away… and anything else that got in their way. Nearby municipalities also had to evacuate residents because of the rising waters, and some public buildings were open to shelter evacuated people, and those unable to return to their homes.

Homes flattened by a fireworks blaze

Arsonists won’t find officers so Civil now

SPAIN’S Guardia Civil officers have started a summer campaign against forest fires… and they’re warning arsonists that they are out to get them! FIREWORKS at a party sparked a blaze which destroyed two homes, as well as scorching 5,000sq/m of land.

It rendered four people homeless, and took firefighters 10 hours to extinguish the flames. Their task was made worse because one of the houses had a yard, filled with highlyflammable junk.

The blaze started at around 1.50am last Sunday, during a party on Mallorca’s Cami dels Pous de Buger, Sa Pobla. Fireworks landed among a pile of junk in a neighbouring property, which provided fuel for the blaze. Flames spread rapidly, causing severe damage to both properties, but police said they had interviewed a man in connection with the blaze, and charges could follow.

Guardia officials say that human activity is the main cause of the blazes, which bring so much devastation to the country’s forests. They have pledged to investigate every fire, and will bring criminal charges, where the cause is either deliberate arson or negligence. So far this year, the number of people arrested or investigated for this type of crime has increased by 90%, to a total of 178 people. The Guardia Civil point

out that forest fires have a devastating impact, and one of the most visible consequences is the destruction of the ecosystem and the landscape. The destroyed vegetation provided oxygen, captured CO2, sustained the soil and provided shelter and food for a wide variety of creatures. But the loss of soil through erosion is the most serious of all forest-fire consequences, and contributes to the desertification of parts of Spain, turning land into desert, as well as polluting and clogging waterways. They also release significant volumes of CO2 into the atmosphere, enhancing the greenhouse effect and adding to climate change.

So far this year, the number of forest fires caused through criminal activity has risen by 140%, compared with the same period last year. Now, the Guardia Civil have reinforced the Nature Protection teams (SEPRONA), with fire-investigation specialists in those areas with the highest number of incidents. One of the biggest successes of Operation AGALLADEIRA II, developed by the Command of Ourense, has been the arrest of one person accused of setting 16 forest fires, who is in custody, awaiting trial. These were particularly dangerous fires because they were close to towns, threatening the lives of people and properties.

Another sex-gang incident, Heroic Spanish officer but it is not classed as rape rescues a US comrade THE debate about Spain’s rape laws has again flared up, following the case of six youths, accused of sexually-abusing a 14-year-old girl.

They have been charged with “abusing” the girl in a disused factory in the Catalan town of Manresa. But critics, who say they should face accusations of rape or sexual assault, wonder why the prosecutor has not pressed for the more serious charge. The defendants, whose ages have not been revealed, all deny having sex with the girl, yet could still face rape charges, depending on the testimony given, says the prosecutor. According to the charges, the six took turns to have sex with the victim, who was “obviously” under the influence of drink and drugs, in October 2016. A seventh man is charged with failing to help the victim, as he stood by and watched. In Spain, intimidation and violence must be shown to have been used, for a serious sexual assault to be classified as rape. This is generally taken

to mean either violence, or a weapon has been used, to threaten the victim. In this case the prosecutor said that as the girl did not fight back, because she was too incapacitated by drink and drugs, then it was not rape. But he has said he might upgrade the charges after the girl testifies. As the defendants left Barcelona court last Wednesday, the victim’s uncle, who had to be restrained when he sought to attack them, held a placard reading: “It’s not abuse, it’s rape.” Supporters shouted the same slogan, as well as “We want justice”. The case has become known as the “Manada de Manresa” or Manresa wolfpack, following the high-

profile case of the young woman, who was attacked during the Pamplona bullrun festival. She, too, did not fight back because she was gang-raped in a doorway and appeared “passive and neutral”. A court cleared her attackers of rape, but the decision was overturned by the Supreme Court, who said she was obviously terrified and intimidated. Her five assailants had their sentences increased from nine years to 15. In the Manresa case, the defendants face 10 to 12 years in prison for the abuse charges, if convicted. If found guilty of sexual assault (rape), they could be sentenced to between 15 and 20 years.

Ruben, with the US officer he rescued from an assault

A SPANISH policeman, holidaying in New York, was hailed a “hero” after saving a US female officer from a violent assault.

Ruben Castillo, a National Police agent in Valencia, was walking with his girlfriend in Times Square when a man in his thirties “head-butted” the officer, and reached for her pistol. With the US officer “dazed” from the assault, Castillo leapt upon the attacker and handcuffed him.

“We were rolling around on the ground for a while, until I managed to restrain him completely, and explained to the attacked agent that I was a Spanish policeman,” Castillo told Las Provincias regional newspaper. The Spanish officer detained the man until more US agents arrived. Meanwhile, thousands of people began to applaud Castillo’s heroic intervention. But the off-duty policeman said he would prefer people to “help”, rather than applaud, in future.

Lifeguards in call for alcohol-free beaches, to save the swimmers

LIFEGUARDS on Spanish beaches want to see alcohol banned to keep bathers safe, after pointing out the dangers of drinking and then going swimming. Just as motorists are now conscious of the extreme risk of driving after consumed alcohol, the Spanish LifeSaving Federation (RFESS) says that same awareness should be created among sunseekers. Although children are most vulnerable to drowning in pools and the sea, statistically, most victims are adults, says the RFESS. Exactly one-third of those who drown are pensioners, according to Safety and Prevention Commission Co-ordinator Jéssica Pino. “Age-related physical problems, such as reduction in mobility, heart conditions and the greater risk of heart attacks that come with age, are among the main risks,” she stressed. “The middle-aged and the elderly are not conscious that their abilities, response times and mobility are gradually reducing. Add to this the lack of first-aid knowledge in Spain, and the risk is higher.” CPR, mouth-to-mouth and other basic first-aid skills are not taught in Spanish schools, habitually, and the RFESS wants to see this changed. “We’re always putting all our efforts into preventing accidents in the water involving children, but pensioners also need

our help,” said Jéssica. “Accidents involving the middle-aged and elderly are completely preventable.” But she revealed that the main cause of drowning in the 30-45 age group was alcohol. “Chiringuitos, which are temporary beach kiosks, set up for summer, are normally very close by when someone gets into trouble in the sea,” she said. “We need to start setting up nonalcohol beaches. “Alcohol on the beach also has another side-effect because children are, effectively, left unattended when their parents drink, which increases their own risk of drowning.” And the Safety Co-ordinator believes that no one should go bathing alone. “Many accidents in the sea could have been prevented, had people been accompanied,” she stressed. Her accident prevention advice for sunbathers includes watching out for rip-tides, being careful with

lilos and body-boards, not jumping off rocks or cliffs unless you know exactly what is on the sea bed, and always obeying lifeguards’ instructions and warning flags. A green flag means bathing is safe; a yellow one indicates that precaution is necessary, and strong swimmers only should go beyond the very shallowest waters. The red flag means that entering the sea is banned, often on pain of a fine, up to €1,500. Lifeguards are not obliged to enter the sea if someone gets into trouble after ignoring a red flag. But, in practice, human instinct takes over and they usually do, which means they are endangering their own lives. If hazardous waves and the threat of hefty fines are not enough to deter people from bathing when a red flag is flying, they should be aware that these are also hoisted when there are large quantities of jellyfish, or even

raw sewage, in the water. The Red Cross has begun an awareness campaign along all Spanish coasts this summer, to include free firstaid workshops that cover CPR, mouth-to-mouth, the recovery position, airwaybreathing-circulation drills, and all other techniques that could save a life. Also, advice on avoiding accidents will be given, and a rescue simulation carried out with instructions on what to do if people witness an emergency. Life-saving courses, staged at swimming pools and on beaches, normally teach people how to rescue someone if they opt to jump in to assist. But that should be a last resort, because they should alert a lifeguard. The photograph shows a simulated rescue demonstration, with a woman acting as volunteer on a beach in Cartagena, Murcia. It was taken by Cartagena Town Council, which organised the campaign.

Ordered to prison, after killing a drug-addict thief

A BRAVE young man has been given a two-year prison sentence after killing a mugger, accidentally, while defending a woman on the Costa del Sol. The unnamed man has 15 days to present himself to the authorities, or a warrant will be issued for his arrest, said a Malaga judge this week. The warning comes after the man chased down a thief at around 7am in February 2015, after hearing the screams of a nearby female cleaner in Fuengirola. The robber had beaten the hotel worker and made off with her handbag, causing the bystander to give chase. He caught up with the criminal, a wanted drugaddict with a record of robbing people, before a struggle ensued. The man punched the mugger just twice to retrieve the bag, but massive brain damage was caused when the thief fell and hit his head on the floor. He died in hospital two days later. During the trial, the defence team said the death was made far more likely because of the mugger’s long history of alcoholism and drug use. Lawyer Alfredo Herrera Rueda this week said that the ruling was the “wrong message” to give to society. “It makes us think that when these situations occur, the best thing to do is look the other way and not complicate your life,” he added. The young man has also been required to pay compensation costs of €180,000, even though the defendant maintained he only wanted to help the victim and recover what had been stolen from her. He said he defended himself when the victim assaulted him, because he had “panicked” after seeing how the woman had been beaten.

Overseas tourists are heading for a record this summer

FOREIGN tourists in Spain are expected to set a record this summer, for the seventh year in succession, according to Industry Minister Reyes Maroto. The sector is hugely important to the country, accounting for 12% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Maroto told a press conference that Spain would have had 29.6m international visitors by the end of the summer, which would be half-a-million more than last

year. Only France gets more arrivals each year. Hand-in-hand with increases in visitor numbers, Maroto expects to see tourist spending rise to a record high. He is predicting growth of 3.2% between July and September, compared with the same 2018 period. This would mean a figure of around €33.9bn. By nation, the UK is the most important market, accounting for 18.5m visitors, with 11.4m Germans also arriving. And, as well as consolidating these markets, the Spanish Government wants to attract new tourists from places such as China.

Twitter’s crowd-surfing fan, with his wheelchair!

THE crowd at last weekend’s Resurrection Fest, a heavy-metal festival held every summer in the Galician town of Viveiro, demonstrated how the disabled can overcome barriers.

A young man in a wheelchair was raised above the audience during one concert, giving him a proper view of the stage, and enabling him to enjoy a spot of crowdsurfing. The on-stage band at the time, Arch Enemy, later shared the video on Twitter, as did many other people. Festival photographer

Daniel Cruz captured the image, and later told the Spanish edition of the HuffPost that the youngster was again hoisted aloft later on. “With this type of music, it’s common for disabled people to be lifted up,” he said. “It’s a way of taking part… of doing the same things as everyone!”

Brit expats love Spain’s dazzling quality of life SPAIN is the fourth best country, worldwide, in which to be an expat. But British expats top the list for its “quality of life”. That is spelled out in HSBC’s latest Expat Annual Classification, the Iberian country jumping up to fourth in the world, after being ranked 13th, globally, in 2018. Only Switzerland, Singapore and Canada rank higher than Spain, while the UK is rated as the 27th best country for expats. New Zealand finished behind Spain in fifth, while Australia, Turkey, Germany, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam made up the rest of the top 10. The results, taken from HSBC’s Expat Explorer survey, are based on wellbeing, society, finances, ambition and ‘little expats’. “From Catalonia to the Costa del Sol, expats are feeling benefits to mind, body and soul,” reads a summary of Spain’s results. It comes after

another survey revealed that for British expats, Spain was the best country in the world. The country was ranked best in the world for ‘quality of life’ and ‘physical and mental wellbeing’, and third-best for ‘ease of settling in’. The statistics also see expat life here rated as the third-best, globally, for that elusive

“work-life balance”. Expat parents will also be pleased that Spain is the second-best place for children to “make friends” and “learn”, while general schooling is ranked eighth, globally. “Be positive, don’t let the bureaucratic systems get you down, don’t try and do everything at once and learn the language,” said one

respondent to the survey, based in Spain. Meanwhile, Spain didn’t score as highly for other aspects, like “political instability”, ranked 15th, and “career progression”, a lowly 33. A total of 18,059 people, all over 18, were asked 27 different questions between February and March 2019, to

compile HSBC’s results. The report concluded: “While Spain doesn’t receive the same plaudits for career progression and salaries, as it does for its relaxed pace of life and scorching summers, expats there are happier and healthier, and their aspirations are to live comfortably amongst beautiful surroundings.”

Don’t keep shelling out for bad parking

DRIVERS in Spain, and here in Tenerife, are notorious for poor parking. But one do-gooder in Spain might just make them blush, at least.

The person has been leaving anonymous flyers on badly-parked cars, ridiculing wayward owners about their “childish” behaviour. The flyer shows a picture of a colour-in tortoise, with the words: “Many three-year-old children also struggle to keep within the lines. But if

you practise colouring in this tortoise, it just might help you park better.” The flyer was spotted by Oliver Byrne, marketing manager at Caroutlet. es, on the Costa Blanca, who said: “A friend sent it to me because he had parked badly. It wasn’t me… I promise!”

Half-naked protestors against bull-fighting are ‘stabbed to death’

A SOCIAL debate is continuing in Spain over whether the country should ban its trademark bullfighting and bullrunning events.

Animal-rights’ groups warn that dozens of bulls are killed annually in Pamplona, at the iconic San Fermin festival. And more than 50 animal rights activists staged a protest against the famous bull-running tradition in the Spanish city, as the San Fermin fiesta was about to begin. Wearing nothing but black underpants, members of PETA and Spanish animal-protection group AnimaNaturalis lay in white silhouettes of “murdered” bulls on a hot, cobbled square in the city centre. Some also wore bull horns and had fake lances in their backs, which was a reference to the weapon with which picadors prick the bull to start the so-called fight. The protestors’ stunt took place one day ahead of San Fermin’s eight-day festival, in which bulls chase daredevil participants through the streets to the ring where the animals are stabbed to death. The scene of the stunt, which involved 54 protesters from Spain, the UK, the US, Ireland and Australia, was cordoned off with yellow tape, representing the bulls’ “crime scene”. A pro-animal rights activist sat on the ground, holding a placard saying, “Bulls killed in Pamplona”, during a protest against bullfighting and bull-

running, called by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) pro-animal group. The event happened on the eve of the San Fermin festivities last Friday (5th July). “Young bulls, who have had very little contact with humans, are transported to Pamplona on a long and stressful journey,” said PETA UK in a statement on its website. “The festival organisers confine them to a small pen for several days. Then, they release them into a noisy, chaotic mob of people, mostly tourists, who chase the terrified animals through the narrow streets of the city. The bulls often crash into walls or lose their footing, sometimes breaking bones.” The pro-animal group warned that at least 48 bulls would be killed during San Fermin festivities and called on the Pamplona Mayor to “stop this bloodbath”. Bull-runs, a centuries-old tradition, is still popular in some Spanish towns during the summer, but the moreviolent practice of bull-

fighting has courted much more controversy lately. Former Pamplona Mayor Joseba Asiron said last year that the bull-runs put a “mark of identity” on the northern Spanish city, adding that it was possible to leave the bull-running without the fighting, drawing a backlash from the bullfighting industry and breeders. The Canary Islands banned the controversial practice in 1991, with Catalonia following suit in 2010. But Spain’s Constitutional Court overturned Catalonia’s decision in 2016. It said that the local government had infringed on Madrid’s powers by banning what the court described as “one more expression of a cultural nature that forms part of the common cultural heritage”. The ruling did not clarify whether the Canarian ban had been unlawful. Similar proposals are being discussed in the Balearic Islands, along with several municipalities across the country.

Dual-fuel cars to ease those diesel emissions A BRITISH-RUN transfer company on the Costa Blanca has been the first in Spain to upgrade a VTClicensed diesel car to dual fuel.

Alicante Transfers Ltd made the upgrade this month on a VIP Mercedes Vito mini-van, which is also the first Vito in Spain to receive the new technology. Dual-fuel motors can help to reduce diesel emissions by ‘30% to 40%’ while also reducing cost by up to ‘25%’. “We are working with Benidorm Town Hall to lead the way in the future of the VTC licence,” said Alicante Transfers Ltd, owner, Dave McQueen. A March 2019 decree from

the Valencian Generalitat stated that VTC licences would be transferred to new cars, only if they use “ecofriendly” forms of power generation. The decree states that “electricity”, “hydrogen”, “natural gas”, “lpg” and “hybrid” cars will be sought out, particularly, among the new, greener measures. “Very few mechanics can convert a diesel engine to dual fuel,” said Jose, from Eco Truck Services, in Zaragoza, “It helps give new life to diesel engines, which create a lot of emissions, but generally make for better engines than petrol cars.” McQueen said the procedure cost €4,600, and took 10 days, but his business would soon recoup the costs through reduced fuel consumption.

No-pay taxi customer hit driver with bottle

THE National Police have arrested a 27-year-old man, who already had criminal charges to his name, for striking a taxi driver over the head with a bottle.

The incident happened at Puerto del Rosario, in Fuerteventura, and was the result of a discussion about payment. The passenger didn’t want to pay his fare, so the taxi driver asked the National Police directly, via a 019 call, for their help, after the assault.

Officers, who were dispatched to taxi-driver’s location, witnessed various people holding the assailant, whom they had witnessed striking the cabbie over the head with a glass bottle, then trying to run away. Another patrol car arrived at the scene and began to assist the taxi driver with his wounds. As well as being shaken up, he had suffered deep cuts to his head, and, after being cleaned up by the officers, he was taken to hospital for further treatment. The attacker, whose identity was not disclosed, was arrested and charged with assault.

You may also wish to leave your children and grandchildren an inheritance, to help them build a financially-secure future. Therefore, you need to protect your savings as much as possible, and obtain peace of mind about your financial security. ENVIRONMENTAL activists have stormed one of Spain’s biggest egg producers, accusing the company of “lying”, after free-range hens were found in terrible conditions.

Last week, scores of activists entered the Huevos Guillen farm, in Sinarcas, near Valencia, for an open rescue of the allegedly “fake freerange” chickens. Marc Brimble, an English teacher and campaigner, who lives in Valencia, claimed: “The hens had no access to the outdoors, while many had lost their feathers and had extremely pale combs.” He added: “It was horrible. The chickens were completely stressed and the noise was indescribable. They were, supposedly, running free, but it’s clear that the public is being told lies. “I was there as an ‘independent activist, undertaking an open rescue’, which was completed without criminal damage or masks.” He said the animal rights group rescued 39 of the “sickest hens”, one of whom died before a vet could be reached. Residents plan to keep Sagrada Familia closed

A RESIDENTS’ association has begun legal action to stop the completion of Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia, despite planning permission being granted recently, after many years.

Construction of the emblematic cathedral stalled after architect Antoni Gaudi’s drawings were destroyed by a blaze in the 1930s. Then, when Gaudi took over the construction in 1885, officials were unable find any record of planning permission being granted But despite Mayor Ada Colau giving his blessing for the go-ahead last month, plans could be scuppered again by 3,000 people, who fear for the fate of their apartments. Residents, particularly on Carrer de Mallorca, which

runs along the east side of the cathedral, are concerned that they will have to vacate their homes when the area becomes a building site. “We are directly affected, and that is why we want to take the necessary legal actions”, said Salvador Barroso, a spokesman for the newly-formed Association of those Affected by the Construction of the Sagrada Familia. The association will present a legal complaint to Barcelona’s Supreme Court, as well as ask the Town Hall to rescind planning permission. Mayor Colau last month allowed building work to proceed until 2026, by which time completion of a planned 12 towers would see La Sagrada Familia become Europe’s tallest religious structure, at 172.5 metres. She also approved a €4.6m grant to correct the iconic anomaly in Barcelona’s skyline.

On 16 July 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins blasted off from Cape Canaveral aboard their Apollo 11 spacecraft - and a few days later made history as Neil and Buzz became the first humans to land on the Moon. Today Cape Canaveral Spaceport is the busiest in America. Made up of Kennedy Space Centre and a US Air Force base, it launches satellites into orbit and sends space probes to explore the solar system. Since the Space Shuttle retired in 2011 no people have blasted off from here - but that is about to change. Brian and Dara explore the top of Launch Tower 41. It has just been refitted to allow astronauts to board a brand new spacecraft - the Starliner - and meet Dane Drefke, who is in control of the launch tower while the astronauts complete their final preparations before they fly into space. Brian and Dara meet with Apollo 16 Astronaut Charlie Duke to find out what it was like to ride on Saturn V, the rocket that launched astronauts on their journey towards the Moon - and the most powerful ever built. Duke recalls talking to the Apollo 11 crew from Mission Control as he guided them to the lunar surface and reveals what it was like to walk on the Moon three years later, when he went there as part of the Apollo 16 crew. Space shuttle Astronaut Nicole Stott gives Dara and Brian a tour of the Atlantis Space Shuttle she flew on and explains how this unique vehicle helped build the International Space Station. Plus Brian gets to drive one of a fleet of autonomous robots being built at Kennedy Space Centre to mine the Moon’s surface to help build a human habitat on the Moon. Dr Kevin Fong travels to NASA’s Stennis base in Mississippi to witness a ‘hot fire’ engine test for a new rocket that will one day take astronauts back the Moon. The RS-25 engines are second hand, previously used on the Space Shuttle. For their new role they need to be tested to see if they can run higher than their previous maximum thrust. Kevin also tries the latest in spacewalk training with ARGOS - a computer-controlled system of ropes and pulleys that can cancel out the effect of gravity. Plus he visits the space food kitchen at Johnson Space Centre to see how food for astronauts is prepared to be as tasty and nutritious as possible for long space flights. Dr Hannah Fry meets astronaut Sunita Williams, who will be one of the first to fly the new Starliner spacecraft. Hannah gets to take the controls for herself as she attempts to dock the spacecraft in one of its training modules. Hannah also travels to California to see the final stages of construction of the next Mars Rover. Due to fly to the Red Planet in 2020, it will look for evidence for life. Hannah also takes a prototype Mars buggy for a spin - a 12-wheeled vehicle which is being designed to allow future astronauts to travel far and wide across the surface of Mars.

Yorkshire Airport

Britain’s Greatest National Treasures

Ey up! Yorkshire Airport is a brand new 6-part documentary series filmed over the summer of 2018 at Leeds Bradford Airport. Leeds Bradford may not be the UK’s biggest airport, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in ambition. With owners having green lighted a huge multi million pound investment, the airport is undergoing a huge makeover. A recent Department of Transport report expects that Leeds Bradford will be the nation’s fastest growing airport and hit passenger numbers of 7 million per year by 2030 But it’s the next 12 months that are critical to the workforce of over 2000 of Yorkshire’s finest, as they aim to bring through the doors an extra 500,000 new passengers. Despite its long term goals, the airport still maintains its warm and witty northern charm, and the series focuses on a dozen staff who go above and beyond every day to keep the terminal and airfield running. Episode 1: We kick off the series with Operations Manager Jamie dealing with a plane making an emergency landing at Leeds Bradford after its cockpit warning alarm shows the plane door is still open, Terminal Manager Nathan handling a potential disaster with a blocked international arrivals door, and we discover if check-in supervisor Chloe can keep control of a plane-load of frustrated passengers bound for Ibiza during, what for some becomes a booze-fuelled 6 hour delay.

Britain’s Greatest National Treasures with Sir Trevor McDonald and Julia Bradbury Sir Trevor McDonald and Julia Bradbury countdown and celebrate our top 20 favourite national treasures in Britain from iconic buildings and ancient monuments to breathtaking natural coastal and countryside wonders and awe-inspiring feats of engineering - but which will claim the number 1 spot? The countdown is based on a major new survey [commissioned by ITV and conducted by YouGov], to discover the country’s favourite sites and iconic landmarks from a shortlist drawn up in conjunction with the National Trust, the English Heritage and others. Britain’s National Treasures reveals new stories and insights as it counts down. Tyson Fury: Rise & Fall of the Gypsy King e c i Channel 5, 23:05 cho

Documentary examining the life and career of the heavyweight boxer, who returned to the ring in 2018 after more than two years away from the sport following mental-health problems. Fury defeated long-reigning world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015, but was stripped of the IBF title days later as a rematch clause with Klitschko precluded him from facing the organisation’s mandatory challenger. A well-documented battle with depression followed - leading to alcoholism and recreational drug use, and many thought Fury would never fight again. However, following a remarkable comeback he challenged undefeated WBC champion Deontay Wilder in December. The bout ended in a controversial split draw, meaning Wilder kept hold of the belt, despite many fans and pundits feeling Fury had done enough to win.

Sunday 14th July

John is shocked to discover that Margaret has left Delhi. Determined to go after her he is stopped in his tracks by Ram Lal who reveals the truth about Chanchal and Daniel’s relationship. Daniel has been summoned back to the Company and he is intent on leaving. An angry John tells him that Chanchal is pregnant. He shirks the responsibility. The brothers come to blows in front of the entire household and the secret around the pregnancy is exposed. Servants, Henrietta and Violet are shocked by the news. But there is worse to come as Castillon bursts into Beecham House. He accuses John of theft and arrests him for stealing the Agra Diamond from the Royal Emperor’s household. John pleads his innocence but is thrown in jail by the Emperor for refusing to reveal his accomplice. Daniel’s suspicions about Samuel increase when he follows him through the Delhi docks and market to the Red Fort. Samuel is clearly up to no good. The shock of John’s arrest forces Chandrika to leave. Daniel now takes charge of the household and finally steps up to his responsibility of fighting for the return of his brother. In a race against time Ram Lal, John’s loyal servant, rushes to find Margaret and tell her the news. Can anyone save John from this false accusation or is he fated to spend the rest of his days in jail?

On 20 July 2019, it will be 50 years since man first walked on the moon. 15:50.................Kirstie and Phil’s Love it or List it The Day We Walked On The Moon tells the dramatic story of how astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins got there, from the 16:50..................Love it or List it perspective of key figures in and around the Apollo 11 mission. 17:55.................... The Secret Life Over 400,000 people played a part in realising the goal set by President of the Zoo Kennedy by the end of the 1960s. Interviewee Michael Collins served as 18:55 ............. The Supervet command module pilot, orbiting the Moon alone as his colleagues made 19:55.Great Canal Journeys those iconic first steps. Although considered by many to be the loneliest 21:00....Building the Dream man in the Universe, Collins’s view is quite the opposite. “I considered myself 22:00 ............ Grand Designs to be a king,” he says. He was well aware though that if Armstrong and New Zealand Aldrin were unable to depart the lunar surface he would be travelling home 23:05..........24 Hours in A&E alone. 00:05.......... 999: What’s Your Three of the key figures in Mission Control, iconic Flight Director Gene Kranz, Emergency? Capsule Communicator Charles Duke and Guidance Officer Steve Bales, 01:10.............. The Supervet explain just how close Apollo 11 came to failure at a number of points during its hazardous descent to the lunar surface. Astronaut Frank Borman, commander of Apollo 8, was NASA’s liaison in the White House on the day. Along with President Nixon’s executive assistant, Dwight Chapin, he discusses why the Moon landing was so much more than a scientific achievement for America and its President, in an era dominated by assassinations and an unpopular war. Meanwhile, recalling their time growing up in so-called “Togethersville”, the cluster of Houston neighbourhoods that were home to America’s astronauts and their families, Andy Aldrin, son of Buzz, and Mark Armstrong, son of Neil, tell us what it was like for the wives and children as they nervously listened in to NASA’s radio feed. British perspectives on this world-changing event are provided by Professor Brian Cox, astrophysicist and Queen guitarist Brian May and space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin Pocock, each of whom see the Apollo 11 mission as an influence on the shape of their own future careers. Sir Trevor McDonald, then a young reporter, recalls the excitement of watching the event from his home in Trinidad. From the Mission Control press room, Guardian journalist Adam Raphael and CBS reporter David Schoumacher give their vivid memories of reporting the biggest story of their lives. Even though he was only six years old, future Space Shuttle astronaut Mike Massimino thought the moon landing was the most important thing that had happened in hundreds of years. Narrated by Mark Strong, The Day We Walked On The Moon is the story of what, 50 years on, remains one of humanity’s greatest achievements - a moment etched in the minds of the 500 million people who watched it around the world on live TV.

2019 has seen a global step-change in public attitudes to the climate crisis, driven in part by a radical, new protest movement. Oxford Circus and other central London locations were ground to a halt in April in the name of saving the planet. In this timely and powerful documentary, reporter Ben Zand gains access to the protest group at the forefront of the fight, Extinction Rebellion. In the first film to get inside the new climate movement, this one-off documentary for BBC Three reveals how Extinction Rebellion has mobilised a generation to take radical action to help save the planet from climate change. For four months, Ben follows some of the group’s key, younger members, as they build towards ‘the rebellion’ - 11 days of London protests in April, staging a peaceful takeover, and occupation of four ‘iconic’ locations around the capital city. Many are not only protesting for the first time in their lives, but are also putting their liberty on the line to demand radical action from the government. Ben is there as they organise street protests and direct actions, risking arrest for their commitment to the cause. Ben meets three young Extinction Rebellion protesters who have been inspired to join and lead the movement: Sixteen year-old Dani from South London has never been on a protest before. Since joining Extinction Rebellion in 2018, she’s co-organised nationwide school strikes. Sam is 22 and a recent graduate, but now works full-time for Extinction Rebellion and is willing to get arrested again and again until something changes. Eighteen year-old Jack joined the movement recently. He’s inspired by the tactics and research laid out by Extinction Rebellion and has an eye on organising controversial splinter actions for the movement. Ben also spends time with the leader of the movement, Roger Hallam, who has spent years academically researching tactics for social change. He says you need 2,000 people to get arrested and 400 people to go to prison if you want the government to meet your demands. Ben challenges him on his methods and asks whether it is ever justifiable to encourage young people to break the law, even for a greater good.

Jo’s a girl of many talents HOLA to all you lovely readers. Here at Keddy’s Entertainment, we really enjoy interviewing all our Tenerife talented artistes, finding out what spurred them on to settle here, on our sunshine island.

Recently, we caught up with Joanne Cassidy, one of our talented comperes, who hosts the Top Square at San Blas, on Golf del Sur. “My mum’s side of the family, the Furys, are brass players,” she explained, “and they were integral to the famous brass band in Ludlow, way back in the Thirties. “My dad, Dave Banks, had several bands over the years, including The Viscounts, The Senators and Mark Anthony, and his family played brass and guitar. “What with my mum, Sue Fury, combining with my dad’s influence, I think it was inevitable that I would do something creative and musical!” Joanne started learning to play the guitar when she was nine, and formed groups at school. She began learning to play brass around the age of 13. This has taken her all over Europe, together with her guitarplaying and singing, as well as performing as principal cornet with the English Festival Brass. One of the places they regularly visited, and one she can still, surprisingly, remember, was the Bitburg Beer Festival. We expect those moreish beers certainly helped lubricate her vocal cords! She is proud to say that she has sung in the Grand Place,

in the centre of Brussels. “That was a huge privilege and a wonderful experience,” she said. “I coaxed my rock-guitarist dad out of retirement, in the Eighties, and we started playing gigs locally, in Shropshire, with my band Jo and Co.” Jo then went on to teach adults and children with learning difficulties and additional challenges, how to play the guitar and brass. “I met my husband Gerry in Cyprus, 19 years ago, and we moved to Scotland, leaving my work involving recreational music. I travelled the country, playing my guitar in pubs, clubs and

holiday camps. I loved the audiences in Scotland. They were really warm, and always up for a party! “My husband took early retirement, because of ill health, and we moved to Tenerife in 2007. I started playing a few venues here, including spending several months doing cabaret on the Top Square on San Blas, Golf del Sur. “I was then offered the job as compère, after the legendary Sonny went back to the UK. I have been performing this role for nine years, and I love being there. It is such an unusual gig, walking up down,

entertaining and singing to 10 bars and restaurants. It’s great! “We have a different cabaret every night. We now include some of the top names in Tenerife, which is fabulous. We love them all. I only do four nights a week, since having back surgery, a few years ago. The other nights are compered by Andy Phillips, Stacey Tippet and Zoe Leigh.” Keddy’s Entertainment recently featured Zoe, aka Blondie, in another Canarian Weekly entertainment edition. Jo says: “It is a really great mix of entertainment. We

have people coming year after year to see us, which we love, plus new folks discover us for the first time. “We started having Christmas Day in August 2010. We now have families organising their holidays, to make sure they are here for that. Plus, of course, we still celebrate the festive season with Santa, in December! We also raise cash for local animal and children’s charities, on various nights throughout the year.” Apart from her music, Keddy’s Entertainment were intrigued by Jo’s interest in aviation. “My dad has an interest in military aviation, and we used to attend air displays when I was a child. A few years ago, I decided to do a Diploma in Avionics, dealing with commercial aircraft. This involves navigations systems, TCAS and ground proximity warning systems, as well as weather radar on Boeing 747s. It was completely different from all the music.” Although, Jo says, she will probably never do anything with it, she found it very interesting. “I have three cats and a husband!” she said. “I love spending time at home with them. We love travelling and went to Cape Canaveral for a rocket launch, last November, and then on to Vegas.” It wouldn’t surprise us if, with her navigation skills, she plots a course to the moon! So, until next time, folks, it’s blast off and over and out, from all of us here at Keddy’s Entertainment! Enjoy whatever you’re doing, and don’t forget to check out our new, international excursion, Magnifique Xanadu, coming soon on 4th August www.xanadushow. com

Selfie left two Britons falling to their death

TWO British men died after plunging 40ft while trying to take a selfie. Tragically, 25-year-old Daniel Vivian Mee, and Jayden Dolman, 20, fell to their deaths in Alicante’s Punta Prima de Orihuela last week.

Daniel was killed, instantly, while crashing into a beach hut, while Jayden died from serious injuries, after a helicopter took

him to Alicante Hospital. A third British man, 20, also present, was treated for shock at the Hospital of Torrevieja. A Guardia Civil source told the Sun newspaper: “The local British consulate has been informed. It appears the men were taking a photo, and initial reports were that they had fallen from a height of around 40 feet. “It is too early at this stage to speculate on exactly what happened, and the police investigation into the cause is still in its infancy.” A police investigation is ongoing.

Irish lad ‘raped’ by men - after exit from brothel!

Beware these dodgy ‘fines’ for speeding!

TRAFFIC authorities in Spain (DGT) have warned of a spate of scam emails, which claim the recipient has been caught speeding, and provide a link through which they should pay a sizeable fine.

The messages appear to come from the Dirección Electrónica Vial (‘Digital Traffic Directorate’) or DEV, and do not name the person they are sent to. Instead, they are addressed to “Señor conductor,” or ‘Dear Mr Driver’. In it, the receiver is informed that he or she has to pay a

fine of €1,530, and is provided with a link, to the DEV payment site, apparently. Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), part of the Ministry of Public Works, stresses that it never sends out notices of fines via email. These are only ever sent by ordinary post, enclosing a photograph of the speeding car, caught on camera, and giving details of the date, time and location, as well as providing information and instructions for payment of the fine online or in person. Normally, the driver is given a deadline to pay, before which the sum of the fine is reduced by 50%. Notifications of speeding fines, or any other road-traffic offences, are sent online,

only via the DEV website if the driver has signed up with his or her electronic DNI, or national identity number, which is available to Spanish nationals only. In this case, the driver would have accessed the DEV site manually, rather than by clicking on a link. The DGT warns recipients to ignore any emails claiming to be speeding fine notices, and, ideally, to delete them unopened. It is very unlikely that a roadtraffic-offence fine would be as high as €1,530 in any case, unless it involved a court hearing. Anyone who has already been caught out should report the matter to the police, immediately!

senior managing director, confirmed that the company has declared interest in Spain. “We’ve revolutionised UK rail over the last 22 years,” he said. “Unfortunately, the UK is fast becoming not investable, from a rail franchise perspective, because of the UK Government’s decision to load unacceptable risk on to bidders. “We welcome the liberal-

isation of the Spanish rail market, where we hope competition will be allowed to flourish.” Virgin will vie with Deutsche Bahn and SNCF, of France, along with Trenitalia, for the Spain contract. Other companies bidding for the deal could include National Express, which has quit the British rail market, but is a big player in Spain’s bus and coach market.

Virgin Trains aiming for Spanish railways

AN Irish teenager says he was raped by two men in Mallorca… after being forced out of a brothel in Magaluf! The 19-yearold holiday-maker told police he was assaulted after losing sight of his friends on the Punta Ballena strip last weekend.

Local paper Ultima Hora reported that he had been attacked at around 5.30am on Sunday. Sources say he was taken into the brothel by two prostitutes, but was ejected after he told them he had no cash. Two men were, reportedly,

waiting for him when he was kicked out of the back door. The shaken tourist was examined at Palma’s Son Espases Hospital, where doctors confirmed that his injuries were the result of a sex attack. He declined to press charges because he “felt ashamed” about the incident. A source told The Sun newspaper: “The hospital called police because of the nature of the man’s injuries, but he told them he could not recall the name of the brothel.. “Although he was described locally as British, police have his nationality as Irish, and he was set to leave the island that day. Guardia Civil said no formal complaint had been lodged.

THE Virgin Trains company is eyeing up Spain’s railways, after being disqualified from bidding for new British contracts.

The prospect comes after the Spanish Government announced that, from December 2020, it would be opening up its highspeed train network to bring competition to the statebacked Renfe. Virgin Trains was banned from bidding for the HS2 line between London and Birmingham this year, while its partner, Stagecoach, was barred from East Midlands Trains and Southeastern tenders, over its failure to quantify future pension risks. Jilted ex ‘planned’ suicide for partner’s new woman IN a plot that could come from a film, a 54-year-old jealous woman, allegedly, tried to stage the suicide of her former partner’s new girlfriend. The unnamed woman is alleged to have lain in wait for her love rival in the lobby of the ex-boyfriend’s apartment building. When her target arrived, the accused, allegedly, pulled out a 19-centimetre knife and forced her victim to let her into the apartment. Once inside and with the door safely locked, the socalled “suicide” plan was put into action. Police say the attacker forced her victim to strip naked at knifepoint, then made her take sleeping pills, all the time wearing latex gloves to avoid fingerprints. The jealous assailant then made a series of cuts to the

arms and legs of the victim, who was then forced into the bath with the taps turned on, apparently, to stage a suicide. But the victim’s screams

put an end to the ghastly plan. Disturbed neighbours called police, who arrived at the fifth-floor home in north-west Spain’s Vigo, Galicia.

But puzzled police, who received no response, prepared to break the door down, only to hear a woman screaming for help, and a second person, who said

she was looking for the keys. The alleged attacker then opened the door. She had blood on her hands and tried to leave the scene, but the police were not letting her go anywhere. Police found the victim in the bath, who told them the other woman had a knife in her handbag. The injured person was taken to hospital suffering deep cuts, but, fortunately, not one had touched an artery. Investigators found that in February, the alleged assailant had split from her boyfriend, who had taken up with the victim later the same month. Police believe the victim had been followed by her alleged attacker for some months, while a plan was hatched for her revenge. The defendant, who now faces charges of attempted murder and false imprisonment, has been remanded in custody by a Galician court.

Insecticides won’t always US lawyer gets rid homes of cockroaches it, in the neck! COCKROACHES are developing a cross-resistance to powerful insecticides, according to an alarming new study by scientists at America’s Purdue University. They exposed German cockroaches to various insecticides, and found that the populations not only developed a resistance to the insecticide to which they were exposed, but also picked up resistances to other insecticides. The study also concluded that the horrible, quick-aslightning bugs, which come out in force across Spain in the warmer months, can actually pass the resistance on to their offspring. Unfortunately, this means it is only a matter of time

before populations become practically insecticide-proof. “This is a previously-unrealised challenge in cockroaches,” admitted Purdue University’s Michael Scharf, who led the study. “Cockroaches developing resistance to multiple classes of insecticides at once will make controlling these pests almost impossible with chemicals alone.” The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports, and German cockroaches are the most common breed in Spain. A cocktail of insecticides, generally used to wipe out

the vermin, is divided into classes, based on toxicity, chemical composition and other factors. Usually, if an insect is immune to one sort, another brand can knock it out. But this will not work if cockroaches become immune to various types. In the study, cockroach populations were kept level by switching insecticides, yet scientists weren’t actually able to reduce their numbers. In fact, Scharf told CNN that resistance within a single generation of cockroaches sometimes increased the pest’s numbers, up to six-fold. The issue is, reportedly, worse in low-income areas, and other places where effective pest control isn’t available. And the only way to fight the bugs, according to Scharf, is to diversify pest-treatment methods.

AMERICAN tourist Jaime Alvarez was taking a “selfie” when a bull gored him in the neck at Pamplona’s San Fermin festival last Monday. The 46-year-old lawyer, from San Francisco, needed urgent surgery when the bull fractured his cheekbone during the first bull run. Alvarez said he ran the 850m course, leading to Pamplona’s bullring, before leaping to a fence for safety. He then hopped down for

a video to say “Here I am, I did it” when he was hit by a stray bull. “The impact was unlike anything I’ve ever felt. It was like being hit by a car or a truck,” he said. “I was really out of it, really stunned, and I didn’t know what direction to go.” Someone grabbed Alvarez by the arm and pushed him through the crowds to reach paramedics. He is one three participants understood to have been hospitalised this year.

A HUSH descended on the tiny village of Zufre as the names were slowly read out. It was 4th November 1937, and approaching dusk in the mountain settlement that sits inside Huelva’s stunning Aracena Natural Park. Most of the local villagers had just made their way back into the village from the nearby fields. A total of 16 women were called out, and each was asked to jump aboard a truck that was supposed to be en route to the nearby market town of Aracena. Ostensibly, they were to make statements about the Civil War before the Nationalist authorities, who had secured the region for dictator Franco some months earlier. However, nobody locally believed it, and, according to witnesses, there was an eerie understanding that the fascist soldiers on the truck had other plans for their captives. Zufre, after all, had been a staunch, left-leaning Republican town on the outbreak of the war in 1936, and the local militiamen quickly captured 60 Nationalist soldiers as prisoners. Franco had been furious and ordered an aerial bombing of the town, which quickly liberated his soldiers, most of the locals fleeing into the nearby hills or “relocating” to Badajoz.

Female horrors of Spain’s Civil War relived, with tears

The 16 mothers, daughters and grandmothers rounded up that day were never

seen again. That is, until this month, when a mass grave is expected to be opened in

the nearby village of Higuera de la Sierra. It is the fifth, unmarked, massburial site to be opened in Andalucia over the last few years, and archaeologists are expecting to find the bodies of women, who were probably tortured and raped before being killed. “They were rounded up in 1937, when Franco’s forces made a concerted effort to find the locals who had deserted villages across Andalucia,” said Cecilio Gordillo, the driving force behind the Todos los Nombres organisation. For the past 13 years, he has been investigating the fate

of the “disappeared” Civil War victims, a third of whom were buried in Andalucia. “There was a wave of repression against the women who lived in Andalucia,” said the former bus driver. “Western Andalucia is the only place in Spain where they have found graves filled exclusively with women. And Zufre will be the fifth such grave, although, it is suspected, there may be a few men in there, too.” But he warned: “At least two graves, believed to have contained the remains of executed women, were empty, so you never know what you will find until they

d of iron, and a bullet for Union women are opened.” He, along with the CGT-A Andalucia Working Group for the Recovery of Social Historical Memory, were given the green light last year and it is still expected to go ahead, from next Monday (15th July), despite the new right-wing PP-CiudadanosVox coalition proposing to cut the “historical memory” budget. However, the dig will be highly controversial and emotive, as they usually are. “We are having a meeting this Thursday to discuss the exact timescale,” confirmed local Higuera archaeologist Jesus Roman, who is involved in the event. The move comes just weeks after five judges in Madrid postponed moving the body of General Franco from Spain’s huge Valle de los Caidos memorial, which is meant to be for the war victims of both sides. It would be something of a disaster, not to afford these women a decent, proper burial, believes Gordillo. He says that most of the 16 women knew this was to be a one-way ticket, despite their innocence. One of them, 62-year-old Alejandra Garzón Acemel, aka La Pistola, turned to embrace a friend, whose name was omitted, crying: “Carmen, my dear, we are not going to see each other again.” Few of them were guilty of anything more than being members of the UGT socialist trade union, some of them having family members already jailed for being linked to it. The wave of terror, launched on the Andalucian women, however, was a strategy for hunting down their menfolk. “They were trying to make them reveal the whereabouts of a brother or a husband,” adds Gordillo, “or they believed that by torturing and executing the women, the men would

emerge from their hiding places in the sierra.” As they trudged up the hill to Don Angel’s medical clinic, where the truck waited, some passed their husbands, while others gazed, longingly, at their children, who had gathered as usual around the local fountain to play. Apparently, on seeing their mothers’ hands tied and their faces streaked with tears, the children turned their heads away. Though the truck set off in the direction of Aracena, it was said to have been driven only as far as Higuera de la Sierra, just 12km down the road. The centre of the town, which, like Zufre, had around 1,000 inhabitants, was generally lively in the evenings, with children playing in the square, and elderly men slamming down dominoes and cards. But by 7pm, when the truck drove in, the light was fading fast and many had already gone indoors, leaving few witnesses to the atrocity that ensued, more than 80 years ago. However, Rosario, one living witness, did recall the macabre scene. “A

truck stopped, loaded with women in front of the bar at 7pm,” she said, in her testimony to the association. “Their cries were chilling. They were told to get down, and they filed along the street that leads to the graveyard. “It’s a short stretch, and maybe some of them didn’t know where the street would take them. But others would have known. ‘In line, that way!’ their executioners shouted. “The cries of those wretched souls could be heard across the whole town, and it gave you goose-bumps. The people of Higuera were terrified. “The women who refused to climb down from the truck were dragged off it, with kicks and a bayonet. Some may have arrived almost dead. The offloading took place quickly and they shot them at the gate to the cemetery. “The old iron gate, which has been painted hundreds of times since, is still marked by the impact of the bullets. “They buried them in a very deep grave, that was already open, where they had already thrown bodies of others they had executed.

“They buried them in layers. They scattered soil on the last bodies in, then added more bodies.” Ironically, at the entrance to the cemetery today, there is a headstone in memory of Franco’s Civil Guards who lost their lives in the attack on their barracks by the militias in 1936. But, of the poor women who died, there is precisely nothing to remember them by. The youngest of the women was 30, the oldest 62. And just seven of the 16 gunned down by the firing squad were officially recorded as dead. It would be another 42 years before the fate of the others was even registered. “My father was just seven when they took his mother,” said Josefa Salguero, the grand-daughter of Carlota Garzón Núñez, who was 47 at the time of her death. “I live in America and hope I will soon be able to visit the grave where my grandmother is.” Maria del Prado Higuera, de la Sierra’s Culture Councillor, confirmed that the town hall had given permission to look for the grave. “We are not otherwise involved,” she

said. “But it is hoped that if the grave is found, it will bring peace to the families.” It will certainly address a painful chapter in the history of both Higuera and Zufre, closing this chapter in the history of the area. “People have been saying that when we open the first mass grave, you’re going to start another Civil War,” says Gordillo. “Well, a lot of these graves have already been opened, and absolutely nothing has happened.” He adds: “We have a Christian culture, and burying bodies is a Christian ceremony. It is the right thing to do.” Spain is said to be second only to Cambodia when it comes to ‘missing’ persons. And, by the end of this month, Todos los Nombres will have 100,000 names of the estimated 114,000 on its website. As Gordilla points out: “We send a special division of the Guardia Civil to search for bodies in Yugoslavia and Guatemala. “We have budgets for archaeologists seeking Pharaohs in Egypt, but what about our own grandfathers? It is time to deal with this, once and for all.”

End of the internet for cheat, who was top cyber-scammer

A MAN alleged to be the biggest cyberscammer in Spanish history, and the nation’s most wanted man, has been arrested.

The 23-year-old, from Madrid, had 25 warrants for arrests issued by courts throughout Spain, which was an outstanding number for his prolific series of internet scams, in which he cheated unsuspecting victims out of vast sums of money. Guardia Civil officers say that, at times, he was making €300,000 a month, with gang members being paid a salary for their work. During the police operation, more than 30 fraudulent online stores, managed by the detainee, were discovered. Along with the alleged head of the gang, a man believed by police to have acted as the “computer scientist”, and the person responsible for recruiting “mules” to launder their ill-gotten gains, have been arrested. All three have been remanded in custody. And, because of the large number of people affected by these scams, the Department of Telematic Crimes of UCO, has set up this website for those cheated to people to make complaints: www.gdt.guardiacivil.es/ webgdt/afectadoslupin.php The operation began after The Guardia Civil’s specialist cyber-crime unit detected a series of possible scams, affecting huge volumes of people around Spain. Each scam was similar, which led police to believe the same group were

responsible. The cyber-scams mainly involved the sale of consumer electronics on fraudulent, online stores, through websites copied from legal and reputable online portals. They used their logos and brand names to trick users. To try to throw authorities off track, the fake stores were online for just a few days, often just a weekend, before disappearing without trace. In that short period, the page would be subjected to an intense, advertising campaign, as well as webpositioning in the main search engines and social networks, with eye-catching offers. They were all intended to attract as many potential buyers as possible, and in the shortest time. The products offered on these web pages were mainly consumer electronics, especially game consoles and mobile phones. The scammers also advertised high-value, seasonal products, such as airconditioners in summer and heaters in winter. To pay for the “products”, victims were asked to send bank transfers, but the goods never arrived. The money received was deposited in the accounts of a series of “mules”. These were people who set up bank accounts in exchange for as little as €100. The internet thieves would then use cash points to withdraw the money, which, sometimes, added up to tens of thousands daily. Although the police investigation has been ongoing for a year, those who were probing believe the main suspect might have been scamming the public for three years!

Give Kaiser a chance! WHO is this handsome boy? Another one of our dogs at K9! His name is Kaiser. For those of you who follow K9 on Facebook, you will be aware of dogs that are left tied up outside the kennels. Unfortunately, this does occur, from time to time, and, a few months ago, this is what happened with Kaiser. The manager pulled up outside to open one morning, and there he was. Once he was inside, we checked for a chip, as we do with all dogs that are found and brought to us, and Kaiser had one! We felt relief. Maybe Kaiser had been found by someone, and they left him at K9. Maybe his owner is actually looking for him. We checked the chip with our vet and got a contact number, but, sadly, this number just rang out. We tried several times to contact the owner, but we

Kaiser was not in good condition when he came to the kennels, but he was a friendly, loving dog, who very quickly became a favourite among our dog walkers. For a little while, he was on his own in the kennel, but we were then able to introduce him to one of our female dogs named Pinky, who he now currently shares with. Pinky was found and brought to us around the same time as Kaiser. They do get on well with each other. Kaiser is an absolute pleasure to walk and be around. He can be a bit tense in the kennels, which is normal for all our dogs, but, once he is outside and with our dog walkers, it is very easy to fall in love with him. AS the name suggests, the Chill Out restaurant, situated on the beach front of Los Cristianos, just near the tunnel on the Las Vistas side, is the ideal place to relax, whether you are coming off the beach, or ready for your night out.

As we were seated, we both noticed the fantastic idea of a waiter call-system, which enables you to request a waiter for service, or just your bill. It is ideal for busy periods, cutting down on waiting times. We didn’t need to use the buttons, because the waiters were attentive, professional, yet friendly, and surprisingly chilled-out; the name must rub off on them, too. They were also happy to advise on any food items, and wine or cocktail menus. The manager went through some of the specials which were not on the menu, showing photos and explaining the different dishes. Normally, I don’t like restaurants with pictures, as they either look a mess, or the food comes out looking nothing like the photo shown. This definitely turned out not to be the case, here. Choosing was extremely difficult, as Chill Out has some very different dishes, such as Fillet Steak with King Prawn and Whisky Sauce, and Cod Fillet and Warm Mango Salsa. There is also a great tapas menu, and much more. In a strange way it was torture, seeing all the dishes coming out for other diners, as they all looked amazing. But, moments later, our starters arrived. We had chosen a duck salad with a dressing of raisins and portwine reduction. The duck was tender and the raisins plump, and the sweet, port-wine dressing complemented them both - absolutely delicious. We also ordered Bang Bang Prawns, which were crispy-

crumbed king prawns with chili mayonnaise. They made a good crunching sound as we bit into them, and the chili mayo had just the right amount of kick. Being extremely greedy, and not realising how big the portions were going to be, we also ordered bruschetta with jamon Serrano, rocket and cheese; a lovely, freshtasting starter, with a good hint of garlic. After the demolition of all three starters, the plates were swiftly removed to make way for our main course. First up for our delectation was the fillet steak, caramelised with mustard and brown sugar, and served with a mustard sauce. We opted for rare, because it can show off the tenderness and quality of the meat. Cooked to perfection, this large piece of fillet was seared perfectly on the outside, but it melted in the mouth because it was so tender on the inside.

It was served with a sweetand-creamy mustard sauce, and accompanied by crunchy, fresh, stir-fried veg and garlicky sautĂŠed potatoes. We were given a steak knife, but it was not required for the task in hand. Next was pure theatre, as our sea bass arrived at the table, flaming and covered in a mountain of sea salt. Watching the waiter skilfully skin, fillet and present the fish was incredible. When we tasted it, we realised that the salt crust enabled the skin to be removed, leaving a beautifully-soft, moist piece of fish with the flavour locked in, as it had steamed in its own juices. It was also served with a vegetable stir fry, as well as Canarian potatoes and traditional, red-andgreen, mojo sauces. A break was required before we were invited to look at the dessert trolley. Filled with inviting, home-made puddings, it was too tempting not to try something. We shared a Dime Bar cake, which was just how you would imagine it to be; sweet, caramelly and gooey. Our dinner was washed down with an excellent bottle of Rioja, and we finished with a goldfish-bowl-sized amaretto, chosen, again, from their extensive wine-and-drinks menu. The Chill Out restaurant, with its immaculate toilets (complete with bubbly water feature), an open kitchen, so you can see your food being prepared, disabled facilities and the right level of ambient music, is a place that everyone can enjoy. I can happily say that this beautiful restaurant has been open for over ten years, and thoroughly deserves its reputation of excellence. It is open from 10am-11pm. Celery on its own has high amounts of antioxidants such as Vitamin C and flavonoids, Vitamin K, folate, potassium, calcium, magnesium, Vitamin B2, fibre - and more. Because of its nutrient quality, the benefits of celery juice include: *Inflammation-reducing properties: celery contains lots of antioxidants, and it can help decrease the risk of oxidative damage in the body, as well as reduce inflammation and prevent inflammatory responses *Hydrating qualities: celery is naturally made up of lots of water, and can help boost your body’s hydration,

especially if you enjoy it in juice form *Digestive support: people have reported digestive benefits and experiencing stronger systems and less digestive upset, after drinking celery juice *Boost cardiovascular health: because of its antioxidant proterties and ability to help with oxidative damage, celery also has the potential to

Along with promoting drinking celery juice, it also has become a popular recommendation to drinking celery juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, to properly enjoy and absorb its benefits. Drinking it on an empty stomach will get the juice into your system, but it’s not

strictly necessary to consume it that way. Juicing in general already helps break down foods into a more instantly absorbent form, and can still get into your system well, if you’ve eaten something already. If you are someone who prefers drinking their celery juice first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, it’s important to remember that, along with juicing, you need to be sure that you also include whole, fibrous foods in your diet, so that your digestive system continues to get the support it needs, and that your metabolism continues to function at an appropriate pace. Celery is a nutrient-dense vegetable with lots of water that can help support a weight-loss journey. In its raw form, it contains fibre that can help keep you satiated for longer, and possibly reduce cravings. It’s a great vegetable to include in your diet, for its nutrient and hydration quality, alone. Focus more on including variety and colours in your diet, and listen to your body. By Val Sainsbury IT’S estimated that around 80% of Americans (and those living in the UK), between the ages of 25-64, don’t work out enough each week, to meet the recommended levels of governmentspecified, daily, physical activity.

While fitness is definitely on the rise, and more people are doing some form of exercise every week than ever before, the majority of adults still find it hard to fit in both strength and aerobic exercise. When most people decide it’s time to practise some healthier habits, simply walking to lose weight and improve their health might not seem like it’s going to do “enough” to give them the benefits of exercise they’re after. But walking is the oldest form of human physical activity there is, and the benefits of walking are great! Long

before the days of voluntarily running marathons or working out in gyms, people walked. And they walked a lot. While it might not give you the ripped body you always dreamed of, walking is a great place to start if you’re new to exercising, or simply lacking motivation to be more active. Even if you’re a seasoned athlete, and prefer really working up a sweat by doing high-intensity workouts or a demanding sport, walking can still be a great form of activity, that complements these tougher workouts. Considering that walking is super convenient, doesn’t wear down joints yet still burns calories, revs up your metabolism, and can help prevent dozens of different diseases, there’s really no downside to walking. How walking benefits health Recently, a study conducted by the London School of Economics and Political Science shined the spotlight on walking as one of the very best preventative measures for fighting off weight gain.

Daily walking is beneficial for keeping people feeling younger, healthier and happier. Regularly walking for weight loss could be just as beneficial, or even more, as hitting the gym. The results of the study, which investigated the effects of various workouts on health markers in over 50,000 adults, over the course of 13 years, found that walkers tend to be thinner than those who go to the gym, or regularly only practise high-intensity workouts. Walking briskly and deliberately for at least 30 minutes a day was correlated with having a lower bodymass index and a smaller waistline, compared with nonwalkers. What’s even more impressive is that the results were particularly pronounced in women, people over 50, and those with low incomes, three groups that notoriously struggle with their weight. Walking has since been considered the gold standard for meeting the guidelines of daily “moderate-intensity

Wholemeal bread now has much tastier price! A NEW law, introduced last Monday, restricts the definition of “wholemeal bread” and brings the IGIC tax on it down from 10% to the 4% bottom rate. Until now, bread labelled “wholemeal” often contained just a tiny portion of wholemeal flour, if any at all, while other agents such as malt were used to give it the brown colour. The flour, when described in the ingredients as “wholemeal”, was often refined white flour, with wheat bran added in afterwards. Now, though, it can only be given this distinction if it contains the complete wheat germ, and makes up a significant part of the content. In fact, 75% of bread sold as “wholemeal” until now, was merely white bread with extra bran and colouring. This is largely because “genuine” wholemeal flour is more expensive and more difficult to work with. Royal Decree, or Bill of

Law number 308/2019, known popularly as “the Bread Law”, also prevents products being labelled as “sourdough bread” or “rye bread” unless these are actually used, and are high up the ingredient list. It replaces a 1984 law, which included enough legal loopholes to allow bread, effectively, to be sold under labels which bore little resemblance to what they actually contained. Wholemeal bread, or what passed for it, legally, until now, attracted IGIC at the middle band, currently 10%. But this has now dropped

to the lowest band of 4%, along with white bread, considered a “staple”, which means that valueadded tax (IGIC) cannot, by law, be higher than the minimum. In practice, it will save shoppers just a few cents a loaf. But, long term, more consumers will be able to afford the higher-fibre, more nutritious version. The change of law affects packaged bread sold in supermarkets, as well as homemade loaves sold in bakeries and coffee shops, although it is not yet clear how compliance will be guaranteed.

physical activity,” since it can be done by just about anyone, at any time, for no cost whatsoever. Over the years, walking has been linked to protection against certain conditions and diseases, including: - Obesity - Heart disease, hypertension and coronary artery disease - Diabetes - Depression and anxiety disorders - Dementia, Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline - Arthritis - Hormonal imbalances - PMS symptoms - Thyroid disorders - Fatigue and low energy levels If you’re not already intentionally walking daily, here are several reasons you might want to start: If walking for around 30 minutes doesn’t burn tons of calories like other vigorous workouts can, you might wonder how it can help with weight loss. Walking at a fast or brisk pace does use up a good amount of bodily energy, but the advantage might be that it’s an easy exercise hack to keep up with, has particular mental benefits, and doesn’t wear someone out the way that other demanding activities might. Any type of exercise is only going to be beneficial if you actually keep up with it, so since so many people can maintain a regime of walking without becoming injured, it seems to offer serious longterm benefits. Additionally, walking seems to be therapeutic and soothing for many people, especially when it’s done outdoors. Since walking can help balance stress hormones like cortisol, which are known to increase cravings and fat storage, it might make it easier to stick with other healthy habits, like eating a nourishing diet and getting good sleep. Low-impact and easy on joints One of the best things about walking is that it can help fight chronic diseases without putting you at even a moderate risk for exerciserelated injuries. It’s just about the safest form of exercise there is, even for adults who are obese, the elderly, or those with existing medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease and arthritis, that might stop them

from participating in other activities. You might assume otherwise, but regular walking actually supports your joints, because it improves circulation and helps the lymphatic system do its job, pulling toxins out of the body and lowering inflammation. Normally, joint cartilage has no direct blood supply, but the more you move, the more your synovial joint fluid circulates, allowing oxygen and nutrients to be brought to delicate or injured areas. In fact, according to the Arthritis Foundation, staying inactive is one of the primary reasons for achiness and soreness, because this results in joints being cut off from essential fluid supply. If you’ve suffered injuries or aches and pains from the past, you can gradually increase the intensity of your walking, without needing a personal trainer or much guidance. Stretching, resting enough and starting slowly can help prevent pains and further inflammation. Improving and preserving heart health Briskly walking has beneficial effects on resting heart rate, blood pressure, exercise capacity, maximal oxygen consumption and quality of life. Heart disease is the No.1 killer in the US, and is tied to the modern-day sedentary lifestyle, with its lack of everyday physical activity, coupled with high stress levels and a poor diet. Brisk walking is considered a simple, safe and effective form of exercise, even for people who are older, have a history of disease, or who have suffered previous injuries that stop them from doing highintensity workouts. Studies show that walking briskly for about 30 minutes a day, five days a week (which is what most authorities recommend), is associated with a 19% reduction in coronary-heart-disease risk, and increasing your speed and intensity can give you even more protection. Essentially, the harder you work while walking, plus the more you do, the better off you’ll be. For the most hearthealthy benefits, try gradually increasing your total walking duration, distance, frequency, energy expenditure and pace.

Final is Our Place to be! MAD Hatters welcomed the Ladies’ Doubles competition last Friday, and the evening ended up with Shar and Mo, from Our Place Playgirls, along with Jackie Higgs and Jackie Ford, from Emerald B, going through to the final.

At the Waterfall, Tommo from Gaffers# Hollywood, hit a 180, and Fran, from Pas O Nadas Internationals, finished on 142. But the night belonged to The Pub’s Ally and Andy, who hit top form to claim their place in the final. It was all about the newcomers at Pink Elephant, as Zurdo and Robere, from Pas O Nadas International, won through to contest the final. They defeated Taylor and John, from Sandys Bookie Boys, showing a nerveless display to reach the semis, despite their first appearance in the competition. In the Division 2 doubles, at Our Place, The Pink Elephant’s Per and Alan won through to face Rob and Sergio, from Club Activo. Good luck to all, when the final comes around. ZURDO AND ROBERT WINNERS AT PINK ELEPHANT

racing pundit, who Rahm wins Irish Open The was a household name again, in the last round SPAIN’S Jon Rahm won the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open for a second time, following his round of 62 at Lahinch Golf Club last Sunday, in Co Clare.

Rahm finished on 16-under, two shots ahead of England’s Andy Sullivan and Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger, to lift the crystal trophy. Best of the Irish was Waterford’s Robin Dawson, who finished on six-under, following a final round of 71. Jubilant Rahm said: “I keep saying I love this tournament, I love the county, I love the people... it feels like home. “It’s special... one of my favourite trophies at home. My game is in great form, but I didn’t show it the first two days as I couldn’t hole the putts. But the weekend was the complete opposite. Putts started rolling in from everywhere. I felt really confident and I knew I

could do something.” Rahm overturned a five-shot deficit with a brilliant 62 to claim his second Irish Open title in three years, firing an eagle, eight birdies and two bogeys, with overnight leader Robert Rock, Eddie Pepperell and Rafa Cabrera Bello three strokes further back. Wiesberger, Rock and Paul Waring will join Rahm in the field for the year’s final major at Royal Portrush, after securing the three qualifying

places on offer, Waring making a crucial birdie on the 18th to finish joint seventh, and edge out former world No.1 Martin Kaymer. Rahm, who stayed in Portrush when he won the 2017 Irish Open at nearby Portstewart, said: “I’m going to Portrush with a lot of good memories and good vibes. I’ll have huge support from the crowd, and, hopefully, I can keep my good golf going into Northern Ireland.”

FLAMBOYANT television broadcaster and personality John McCririck, who was the face of Channel 4’s horse-racing coverage for many years, has died aged 79. Thanks to his extravagant personality and onscreen persona, he became a household name. But his health had deteriorated in

recent years, and he publicly said his enforced departure from Channel 4 in 2012 left his life “meaningless”. McCririck also looked frail and weak during a recent appearance on ITV’s This Morning programme. Roger Easterby, his close friend for 40 years, said: “John was often referred to as being like Marmite, but I believe people genuinely liked him. He was kind and generous, and knew his subject inside-out.”

Tennis

It’s end of the line for Wimbledon dreamers AFTER two joyful wins together, the mixed dreamteam doubles pairing of Serena Williams and Andy Murray were knocked out in the third round of Wimbledon on Wednesday.

They fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to top-seeded Nicole Melichar and Bruno Soares, but the addition of the solo stars attracted bumper crowds to this competition, which is usually overlooked. Soares dominated the match at the net, ensuring an end to a partnership which, during their brief run, captured the hearts and imaginations of fans at Wimbledon. For Williams, who has won seven singles titles at Wimbledon and another six in women’s

Football ASHLEY Williams, the former Swansea and Everton defender, has turned down big-money moves overseas in an effort to help lead Wales to Euro 2020. The Wales captain is a free agent, after leaving Goodison Park at the

doubles, the brief run with Murray, a Scot with two Wimbledon championships of his own, was something to savour. “To play on this stage

with Andy, who has done so well here for so many years, is literally a lifetime experience,” said Williams, who yesterday (Thursday) competed in the

singles semi-finals. “I’m so happy that I got to experience it.” It was an experience that came about from unusual circumstances. Murray, who had hip

surgery in January, is working himself back into shape by playing doubles. And Williams, who had been slowed by knee pain for months, was also short on

match-play coming into Wimbledon. A content Murray said: “I think I achieved a lot,” “Considering the lack of matches, I did okay. The most positive thing is that my body felt good. My hip, anyway, was feeling good, so that was positive. “It’s a lot of physical work, now, trying to get stronger, get a good balance with all of the kind of muscles around my hip.” He added: “It will be interesting to see what’s happened these last four weeks, where I’ve been obviously playing tennis but doing not much training, to see how things have progressed or not. But I’ve still got quite a long way to go.” Meanwhile, plans are afoot to provide Wimbledon with a statue of Murray, to acknowledge his contribution to British tennis.

Captain Williams wants to be close to his Wales team end of his contract this summer. He spent last season on loan at Stoke in the Sky Bet Championship, where he played 37 games in all competitions. Williams, 34, knows his country face a huge battle to qualify from

Group E, and believes he needs to stay on home territory to remain in manager Ryan Giggs’ plans. “Everybody who knows me is aware of how passionate I am about playing for Wales and captaining the team,” he

said. “I’ve had offers from abroad, and I’m not opposed to going elsewhere. But staying in the UK is my priority, whether it be in the Premier League or the Championship. “They are the leagues I

Watch this week’s major sporting events at the following venues:

need to be competing in to stay involved with Wales. It was difficult at Stoke, and we didn’t have the best of seasons. But for me, personally, it went well. “It was a different challenge from the Premier League, and difficult with the number of games, but I enjoyed it. “I’m still in good shape and still able to do what I was doing six or seven years ago. I played 37 games last season and while it wasn’t a great campaign, I think we still had the third-highest number of clean-sheets in the division.” Williams’ long-term aim is to go into management, and he is working towards earning his coaching badges through the Welsh FA. He has played club football for some of the biggest names in the game, including Sam Allardyce, Michael Laudrup and Ronald Koeman. But Brendan Rodgers, his manager when Swan-

sea were promoted to the Premier League in 2011, inspired him the most. “There are things I will take from all the managers I played for, even if I didn’t necessarily agree with them at the time,” he said. “For me, Brendan Rodgers was the complete manager. It’s not often you see a dressing room which is completely happy and together. But he managed to achieve that. “What stood out was the way he got the players up for training every day, and he showed great enthusiasm. He’d be someone I would be looking to model my managerial career on.”
