Boris has bitter Brexit pill to swallow, over 50p coins
Continued from Front
The Royal Mint must take this humiliating step, after the PM and the EU confirmed last Monday that Britain’s departure would be delayed for three months. The decision comes weeks after the Treasury boasted it would mint three million special coins containing the 31st October date, in the days running up to our departure. Since production on the coins was “paused” a few days ago, the Treasury has refused to say how many were produced, or even what the minting cost. Officials claimed that data was commercially confidential, despite having bragged themselves that three million would be produced by exit day. Now, the Treasury has confirmed that these coins will be recycled, following the EU’s agreement with the UK Government to a Brexit extension, until 31st January 2020. A spokesman for HM Treasury added: “We will still produce a coin to mark our departure
from the European Union, and this will enter circulation after we have left.” Lib Dem Brexit spokesman Tom Brake said: “This meltdown is symbolic of the waste that is Brexit. These coins were commissioned simply to prop up Boris Johnson’s ego. The Royal Mint should not have to foot the bill for the Tory Government’s failure to
Taller Seve Díaz standing so high
THE restaurant El Taller Seve Díaz, in Puerto de la Cruz, is among the 10 best haute cuisine restaurants in Spain, as recorded in the annual Travelers’ Choice Awards, awarded by the Tripadvisor website.
The modern restaurant, which was placed sixth out of all restaurants in Spain, can be found in an old cottage in Puerto’s main restaurant district, and offers an a la carte and tasting menu. The Tripadvisor’s top three are Girona’s El Celler de Can Roca, which has positioned itself as the best haute cuisine restaurant in Spain, followed by Martín Berasategui, in Lasarte and
Enjoy, in Barcelona. Another restaurant from the Canary Islands in at No.9 is Gran Canaria’s Gorbeain San Augustin. Together with the UK, France and Italy, Spain is one of the countries triumphing most in this year’s world rankings, whose winners are determined by taking into account the quantity and quality of the opinions collected by users, over a 12-month period. The Catalonia region has the highest number of
restaurants awarded by Travelers’ Choice 2019. Thus, Barcelona has the top total of winning restaurants in Spain, with six in both categories. In the world ranking, the TRB Hutong of Beijing has been crowned No.1 restaurant in the category of haute cuisine in the world. It is the first time a restaurant in Asia has received this honour, while in the “casual restaurant” category, Florida’s Pane & Wine repeats the first place it won last year.
meet its self-imposed, Brexit deadline. “This comes on top of the millions of pounds that Boris Johnson has thrown away on his pointless ‘Get Ready for Brexit’ propaganda campaign. This cash could have been spent on our NHS, our schools, and tackling the climate emergency.” He added: “Liberal Democrats are the strongest party of Remain. We will keep fighting to stop Brexit and give people the final say, with a People’s Vote.” The special coins were designed, originally, to be minted in time for Britain leaving the trading bloc today (Friday). They were approved by the Queen and were set to carry the words “Friendship with all nations”. They will still be produced, eventually, and stamped with a new departure date, now set to be 31st January, 2020. The Royal Mint website says that precious metals, such as 50p coins, are sorted and shredded before being melted down. Metals are then purified and solidified, before being turned into new products.
Trapped man suffers badly in fire at home
A 66-YEAR-OLD man suffered severe burns last Sunday after being trapped in a fire at his home, in Calle La Milagrosa, Guia de Isora. The emergency services sent along a fire-fighting team, accompanied by medics, after a call was received at around 6.15pm. The fire-fighters began extinguishing the flames, while the medical team treated the injured man. He had serious, second-degree injuries, yet the medics were able to make him comfortable until a helicopter arrived to take him to hospital. After being stabilised, the victim was flown to Los Rodeos airport by helicopter, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment. The Guardia Civil and Local Police officers were at the scene to assist with the emergency.

Marvel Studios are working Eternally!
1st November - 7th November 2019
WITH filming set to begin soon for Marvel Studios’ next blockbuster franchise, Eternals, pre-production is hard at work on set design.
And, recently, some new images from the film’s replica version of Babylon surfaced online. Now, though, a new set-piece might have been revealed. Based on a new image from the Canary Islands, it seems as though Eternals is working on a new location, to be featured in the film. From the looks of it, the crew is preparing a set on the beach west of Fuerteventura, for what could, potentially, be a massive scene. As the Twitter account ‘Secrets of the ETERNALS’ suggested, this could be designed for a big battle scene. With the film featuring such a large roster of powerful heroes, Marvel Studios will need a large setting to show off their abilities. The set is on the same island as the film’s Babylon set, so this could be set right outside of the kingdom. With the film’s stars currently arriving in Fuerteventura, it is possible that the first sight of the Eternals in their costumes will pop up soon.

Pensioner, 73, was part of a drug-dealing team
THREE men, aged 37 and 43, along with a 73-year-old pensioner, have been charged by the National Police with dealing cocaine, crack crystal meth and hashish, all illegal substances, which they intended to sell from a Gran Canaria apartment.
The Canarian Police chief said the probe began after fellow officers gained information about the sales of illegal substances being sold from an apartment, close to a public park in which many adolescents frequented. Investigations revealed that there were three individuals operating from the apartment, selling several types of drugs to consumers, who came knocking. The officers, happy with the information they had
received, then requested a mandatory court order to enable them to search the premises, which they did, finding 60 doses of crack, 12 doses of cocaine, 2 grams of crystal, and 33 of hashish. Also found were €975 in cash and 12 mobile phones, along with various utensils that had been used to measure and cut the substances. The police charged all three men with drug distribution, as well as crimes against public safety.

Canarian chiefs to fund disabled-friendly areas
THE Canarian Government has set aside nearly €750m to make streets and public buildings as disabled-friendly as possible. All local councils can apply for funding within the next fortnight, and works must be either complete or underway by 15th December this year. They include actions such as ramps and lifts for public buildings, dropped kerbs at pedestrian crossings, adapted vehicles for public transport or for loaning to disabled residents, disabled toilets, loudspeakers and Braille in hospitals.
They also plan to focus on health centres and other public facilities to help the blind or partiallysighted, as well as handrails on pavements, more disabled parking spaces, and anything else local authorities believe would help their residents. These can even include signs on the inside of toilet doors reading “way out” for people with dementia, or pedestrian crossings, which beep so that the partiallysighted and blind will be aware of when it is safe for them to step out. The regional government pot comes to just over €700,000, and grants of between 25% and 50% are available for each project.

NEWS IN BRIEF ‘Intense’ quake rocks residents
1st November - 7th November 2019
Aussies have the taste for success
AN earthquake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, struck Andalucia last Saturday morning, shocking residents in Seville’s Pruna town at 11.35. It was also felt “intensely”, from Ronda to Marbella. The quake was measured at a depth of five kilometres and came after a 2.8 magnitude tremor nearby, according to the National Geographic Institute. British expats online claimed their homes were shaking. “I felt it,” wrote one. “It was fairly strong, because my computer was rocking on the table, and the chair I was on was shaking. I am four floors up, in Guadalmina, in the San Pedro district.” Others in Estepona and Sabinillas also claimed to have felt the tremor.
Body discovery still puzzling
THE mystery over a man’s body, found dumped in a Marbella ditch, continues, and though police have established that he was from Bulgaria, they have yet to find any links between him and Spain. The unnamed victim was shot four times, three times in the stomach and once in the arm, before being tossed in a ditch next to the A-7176, which connects the Istan village with Marbella. An initial probe worked on the theory that the murder was a typical “settling of accounts”. But police sources say investigators are now working several lines of enquiry, to understand more about the man’s life, and, more importantly, who his enemies might have been. The Costa del Sol unit of the UDYCO force (Unit Against Drugs and Organised Crime), has taken over the investigation. Medical experts believe the man had been dead for just a few hours when his body was discovered last Sunday morning.
Heavy rain triggers call-outs
AN Australian team, comprising Jessie Williamson (pictured left) and Millie Tang, won the three-day, Licor 43 Bartenders and Baristas Challenge 2019, after a three-day global final in Gran Canaria. A total of 26 bartenders and baristas, from 12 countries, were paired up following regional rounds and flown to Gran Canaria for the final, which took place last week. The competitors, from Norway, Sweden, Finland, the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Estonia, Germany, Australia,
Russia and Spain, were joined by a victorious team from the European Bartender School (EBS). After all the challenges, the finalists were whittled down to three teams: Denmark, Spain and Australia, who were challenged to recreate the drinks which put them
through their regional heats. Brisbane couple Millie Tang, a bartender from The Gresham, and barista Jessie Williamson, from Black Coffee Lab, impressed the judges most with their Island Hopper cocktail. Denmark were runners-up, with the Spanish duo third.
Knife man’s ‘hate’ crime
THE Canarian emergency services attended more than 80 calls last weekend, the majority on Saturday morning, because of the heavy rainfall. Most calls came between 10am and 2 pm, relating to landslides, sewer leakages, electrical problems and, of course, floods. The thunderstorms were mainly in La Palma and Tenerife, which recorded the heaviest rainfall over the weekend. In Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, Local Police officers had to intervene in several areas, specifically in Anaga, because of the landslides, with rubble falling on to the road.
Cyclist suffers critical injuries
A MAN suffered serious head injuries last Sunday afternoon after falling off his push-bike while riding around the recreational area of Arenas Negras, which is popular with cyclists in the Garachico municipality. The 29-year-old needed medical assistance because of the severity of his injuries, and the emergency services were called into action. A medical ambulance soon arrived, and he was assessed by medics. He was taken, immediately, to a nearby medical centre, before being transferred to a hospital in the North of Tenerife for further treatment.
A MAN was arrested in Las Americas in the early hours of last Monday by the Guardia Civil, charged with performing a hate crime, along with attempted murder, after his victim complained to the police. His injuries were not considered serious, but he was threatened with a knife by his assailant, and
had a superficial neck wound, because of his sexual preference. Officers were able to find the knife
man and arrest him, thanks to a lead from unofficial sources. He is now awaiting an appearance before a judge.

Couple used aluminium to bypass shops’ alarms
7 CW
Paedo pensioner faces life for his ‘catalogue of filth’ TONY Clough, a paedophile pensioner, who has been locked up for 30 years after a life of child abuse, was told by a judge: “You are a disgrace.”
TWO men, aged 30 and 24, have been charged with theft after being spotted driving around Arona several times by National Police, who were patrolling the area. The older of the two already has a police record for several crimes committed in the South of Tenerife, and he also has an arrest warrant issued by the Madrid courts. The officers were able to identify the men, and verified that one of them was wanted. While both men were in the
process of being identified, the officers found that they had prepared bags, lined with aluminium, and used, specifically, to prevent alarms from detecting what they were stealing from shops. Inside the bags were items of clothing, taken from several shops, with a total value of around 1,000 euros. The officers confirmed that the clothes had been stolen from specific establishments, and that the men’s intention was to resell the items to the public at discounted prices. At this stage, the officers arrested and charged both individuals, who are now awaiting a court appearance.
The 65-year-old was convicted by a jury of 15 charges, including the rapes of under-13 children, as well as sexual assault, and, as well as girls, five boys were also abused. Judge Stuart Rafferty QC, sitting at Nottingham Crown Court, declared him to be a dangerous offender, saying: “You pose a risk of causing serious harm to the public, particularly young boys, and you have pursued this behaviour throughout your adult life. “I have no hesitation to say, given the opportunity, that you would do it again, as soon as possible.” Under the terms of the sentence, Clough cannot seek freedom until he is aged 85. The Judge said the Parole Board may decide he must stay in prison until he is 95. But even then, he would risk
immediate recall for eight more years. Judge Rafferty also told Clough: “The fact that you are old cannot shield you. If you can’t survive the sentence, then some may feel cheated, and, probably, rightly so.” He said the two-week trial had “stripped away” the dignity of his victims, adding: “This is such a catalogue of filth.” And prosecutor Jonathan Straw told the court: “Lives have been irrevocably stained.” Clough of Sharratt Court, Mansfield, moved to Tenerife five years ago, returning to the UK 18 months ago on bail. He stood in silence when sent to prison, the judge adding: “You are a disgrace. I hope one day, you will feel some
shame for what you did.” After the hearing, one victim’s relative said: “It has taken 22 months since the allegations came out for people to get the justice they deserve. “Now we have got the sentence, we will get counselling for the victims. We are just so glad.” The trial was held in front of a jury of five women and seven men, and, as they filed out, one victim said, quietly and repeatedly: “Thank you.” Clough was found guilty of eight counts of rape of a child under 13; one rape; one attempted rape of a child; three sexual assaults of a child, and one of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. He was cleared of one charge of the rape of a child.

Talisker will celebrate its sixth consecutive year as title sponsor of the race, which is the ultimate, elemental adventure for true Wild Spirits. This is the next chapter in the Talisker Wilderness Bar series, following last year’s initial event, staged around a campfire on the rugged North Devon coast. It will host a conversation between six wild spirits, whose lives revolved around the sea. They include Laura Try, who completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, Tom Kay, founder of the innovative, outdoor brand Finisterre, as well as Dan and Jade, from Fore/Adventure, a foraging and food adventures company. Talisker is produced on the Isle of Skye, acknowledged as one of the most rugged, remote, yet beautiful, landscapes in Scotland. Talisker aims to reconnect people to the things that matter most, by tapping into nature and elemental adventures to
nurture the Wild Spirits, living in everyone. The competition runs until 10th November. No qualifications are needed, but bar expertise is required, and all entrants must be aged 25 or more. Natalia Montigny, head of Talisker marketing, said: “As the world accelerates towards modernisation, digitalisation and urbanisation, Talisker’s ambition is to remind people about the exhilaration of natural elements. “We live for adventure, and we seek to unlock the Wild Spirit in all of us. We are looking for a Wild Spirit to run our remote Wilderness Bar in La Gomera, to serve fellow Wild spirits in a celebration of the start of our Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2019.” She added: “Our winning Wild Spirits bartender will be passionate about not only experiencing nature’s elements, but also protecting them. He or she will be adventurous, enthusiastic and, ultimately, care about the sea.” Application details, including terms and conditions, can be found on Talisker’s Instagram channel @talisker The Talisker is battered by the elements on the windswept Isle of Skye coast, and is one of the most remote distilleries in Scotland. It was founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, and the distillery has virtually been in constant operation ever since.
IF you receive an SMS message from Correos on your mobile phone, ignore it because it’s a scam, and officials are advising you, strongly, not to open it. These scams keep recurring, and have for some time, and officials are asking the public to be aware that these particular scams are dangerous, no matter how many times you see them pop up on your phone. This particular scam looks extremely official, with access to your name. It informs you that you have a package waiting for you to retrieve at Customs. The SMS then gives a step-bystep guide on how you can obtain your package by making essential payments.
The message contains a link, which urges you to pay what is “requested”, so that when reclaiming you parcel, the process is made easy. But this is exactly how the scammers obtain your bank details, in an attempt to clear your account. Unfortunately, many people have already reported incidents regarding this particular fraud. People in the Canary Islands have to be more vigilant, since many packages are stopped at Customs. It is an everyday occurrence across the archipelago to pay extra duty, when trying to redeem your parcel. That is why Officials are asking the public, especially at this time of the year, to be extra vigilant. If you receive this type of SMS, which claims to have been sent from correos, (Post Office, obviously causing more confusion), then leave it alone; don’t open it; just delete it!
Hunter finds explosive in Teide National Park
A HUNTER, out and about on Tuesday morning, hoping to familiarise himself with Teide’s National Park terrain, stumbled across an explosive device. It displayed specific characteristics, similar to military explosives, which is why he contacted
the emergency services immediately, after stumbling across the device, at Siete Cañadas. The Guardia Civil were also notified, and a specialised, anti-explosive team were sent to the area. Once at the scene, officers confirmed that the hunter had found a mortar grenade, which had to be deactivated, to avoid any serious accident to walkers, using the popular trail.

Trio’s ravine death
A MAN & two women died, tragically, after coming off the road and falling into a ravine in their Land Rover from a 30-metre height. But officials are still trying to piece together what exactly happened. They were driving home to Las Lomadas, in the municipality
of San Andres and Sauces, on La Palma, late on Tuesday night, it is thought. Family members alerted officials when it was getting very late and the trio, aged 75, 72 and 93, hadn’t returned home from their journey. A search party began, and, sadly, the bodies were discovered on Wednesday morning, Sources say the three individuals were the parents and the grandmother of a local fire-fighter.
Another viral punch-up!
TWO men, said to be Italians, were involved in a street fight in Puerto Colon on Wednesday afternoon, watched by several tourists. And, surprise surprise, it has now gone viral.
This seems to be today’s distasteful vision of Tenerife, with several punch-ups at local tourist spots being recorded, and uploaded on to social media sites.
Airport crash victims receive compensation
SOME 33 British passengers, involved in an accident at Tenerife South airport in 2017, will, finally, be compensated individually, the courts having heard their vivid stories. A lawyer representing several victims, said: “My clients went to have a holiday, but, in the end, it turned out to be their worst nightmare.” The incident occurred in 2017, when the holidaymakers were hit by a heavygoods lorry on the runway, as they began alighting from their coach for transfer to the aeroplane. Coach windows were smashed, and several people were knocked around the bus. Some suffered broken
bones as well as cuts from the shards of glass, not to mention the physiological trauma several victims experienced after the accident. The courts have now reached an agreement and the victims will now receive compensation, between €1,000 and €23,000, depending on each case.
Canary Island students launch their recycling scheme, for used pens!
WHERE should we recycle used pens? The first answer that comes to mind is “in the yellow bin”, but that is, in fact, where hard and soft plastics, as well as tins, cans and milk or juice cartons are deposited. But apparently, this is not the case. Biros, ink pens, whiteboard markers and Tipp-Ex pens or bottles cannot be placed in the yellow bins because their content contaminates the rest of the recyclable material, according to companies responsible for managing reusable waste. TerraCycle operates in several parts of Spain, taking on waste which is notoriously difficult to recycle, pens being among them, although their presence is not widespread, and, in the Canary Islands, is completely absent. But youngsters from the Polytechnic vocational college in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, studying environmental chemistry, have set up a scheme for recycling pens and other plastic-based stationery items, such as broken rulers and pencil-sharpeners, and metal objects such as compasses, paperclips and drawing pins. They have called it the “Proyecto ARBol”, which translates as “Tree Project” but stands for “Acción para el Reciclaje de Bolígrafos”, or in English, “Action for the Recycling of Pens”. Students say they want to prevent metal and plastic, desktop items from ending up in the islands’ landfill
sites, when they break, stop working, or, worse, are dumped in the region’s beaches and numerous nature reserves and national parks. Their scheme has generated a great deal of enthusiasm among the public. And, with the help of a growing number of volunteers, it has spread across all the Canary Islands and gained the support of each island council, or Cabildo. The Cabildos have started distributing hundreds of “pen banks” throughout offices, schools and colleges. Once full, the contents are stored in local recycling headquarters, until they can be transported to Gran Canaria, where TerraCycle collects them up in bulk and takes them by ship to their specialist recycling plants on the mainland. Some of them are in good enough condition that they can be restored, but others are melted down to make other plastic products. The Proyecto ARBol has attracted the attention of French biro producer BIC, which now collects up masses of the material and takes it back to a specific recycling plant in the south of France. But there is still plenty of work to be done, says TerraCycle. “For the moment, we have not found a satisfactory solution for transporting packages from the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, Melilla or Andorra. “The financial and environmental cost of transport from these geographical areas does not allow us to collect used pens, but we will advise you when we find a solution.” It is only since awareness of limited landfill capacity, plastic waste in the sea and water supply, soil and water
pollution and the impact of fly-tipping on flora and fauna has become widespread, that society is starting to realise disposable pens are an environmental problem; not only through lack of possibilities for recycling, but also because of the toxic effect of their ink on the natural environment. Spain has around eight million young people in full-time education, and, if each of these used just one 10-gram biro a year, they would generate a minimum of 80 tonnes of plastic and ink waste annually, which would end up in landfill, not counting members of the workforce, who use pens every day. TerraCycle.com includes an interactive map on its website, found by searching “bolígrafos”, showing all Spain’s collection points. For every 20 kilos it receives, the sender will receive “TerraCycle points”, and one point is worth one cent, which can be exchanged for material for schools, clubs or societies from a minimum of 1,000 points. Individuals, as well as councils, schools, offices and colleges can send their used pens, but TerraCycle recommends waiting until they have 20 kilos, or more points, which can be passed on to the association or education centre of their choice. They should be placed in a cardboard box, and the sender should contact specialist courier firm Envialia to collect them. TerraCycle says used pens, once collected, are stored, cleaned and then shipped to their factories or plants, where they are turned into products for everyday use, such as chairs and park benches.

POLICE were shocked to discover that a 76-year-old Spanish woman had been responsible for multiple robberies in the southern city of Málaga. Her record showed that she had been caught 40 times for theft, but they had never experienced such a case… and never even heard of one like it! What began with a British tourist running barefoot through Málaga, ended with the unexpected arrest of an old woman with a long, criminal history. Once caught, Josefa (fictitious name), with her missing teeth and dishevelled appearance, feigned confusion: “Where am I? What am I doing at the police station?” she asked officers from the National Police robbery unit. She would ask staff, so timidly, if it were possible to rent the apartments, and her polished act almost fooled the officers. Perhaps she had Alzheimer’s disease and got lost, they wondered. But when they took her fingerprints, they were stunned! Josefa had been arrested 40 times under eight different names since the 1970s. And, admitted one officer: “She almost got away with it.” The police operation, codenamed “Net Curtain,” began in a luxury apartment in the historic centre of Málaga on 19th September. A family of Manchester tourists had rented the apartment for their holiday. While on the balcony, they saw a woman, Josefa, open the door to the property with her own key and try to steal from them. One of the tourists yelled out and ran after her, without stopping to put on his shoes. He chased her downstairs and down the nearby streets, but had trouble catching up with her.
11 CW
At 76, Josefa was able to fool the police, and everyone else around
“The man was strong and athletic but she managed to dodge him,” said an admiring officer from the Local Police, who helped the tourist. He was barefoot, sweating and agitated, and their initial thought was: “Another drunken tourist!” The man gestured for the police to come with him, and, a few metres away, in Los Mártires square, several members of his family had caught Josefa. “She’s a very old-looking woman,” said Rafael J, from Málaga’s Local Police force. “We found it very strange, but we could tell something odd was going on,” said municipal officer Ramón. The officers thought
the woman was just disorientated. She was wearing humble, dark clothing, as if in mourning. Her hair was dishevelled, and she looked as though she wouldn’t harm a fly. But the person in charge of the company renting out the apartment insisted that she had been caught inside the property. The officers went up to the luxurious home, and agreed it was “impossible” for her to have been there by accident. Josefa was then taken into custody at the provincial police station, where, despite her convincing performance, officers were able to uncover her long, criminal history.
Robbery Unit members were not aware of the woman, but various district police stations were. She was living in the heart of La Palmilla, one of Malaga’s most impoverished neighbourhoods, and was an expert in fooling and cheating others. She has been a thief “all her life”, be it robbery or petty theft, but always stealing from properties. But she’s not that smart because she has been in and out of prison several times. As she was fleeing from the tourist, Josefa, carrying 20 sets of keys, dropped two sets. These keys opened the front doors to tourist and residential apartment buildings, all owned by the
same company. The Robbery Unit had a few unsolved cases in the same area and decided to investigate further. And, fortunately for them, the cleaning and maintenance workers remembered her. “She would ask them, very timidly, if it were possible to rent apartments there, or something else,” said one officer. They also revised the security footage. Some of it had been lost, but one of the blocks still had the recordings. In the footage to which EL PAÍS has had access, Josefa is seen checking that there is no one on the stairs, and calling the lift for the floor where she is planning a robbery. That way, she made sure she had a minute to enter the apartments and take the first thing she could find: computers, phones, bags, cash. On one occasion, she even found €1,000 to steal. But on 11th October, officers stopped her again, charging her with at least three more robberies, and a judge has sent her to prison. The National Police are now investigating how she was able to make copies of the keys to the tourist apartments. Her modus operandi allowed her to steal periodically because most tourists don’t report robberies, and no one believes those who do, feeling they just want to claim insurance. The locks are never changed, and, a few days later, there are new tenants, with new loot! At 76, Josefa knew exactly what she was doing!

The grisly find was made after a family member of the 78-year-old woman reported her missing. But according to Spanish press, neighbours in the Madrid district of Ciudad Lineal had been asking police to check up on the woman for years after not seeing her alive since 2004. Police attempted to enter the home, alongside the
woman’s relatives, but they had to call for the fire brigade as it was heavily locked from the inside. After gaining entry to the property, in Calle Jose del Hierro, investigators found the woman’s body in a mummified state in the bathroom. According to El Mundo, doctors believe she died 14-16 years ago, and she is believed to have died from natural causes. The room in which she died was incredibly humid and had a ventilation unit. But such conditions meant the body did not decompose, because they created the perfect atmosphere for mummification.

In black and white, Spain to keep clock changes, until 2021 LITTLE has been mentioned in the past year about the Europe-wide plan to stop turning the clocks back in winter. And again, from last weekend, it became dark an hour earlier in Spain and on the rest of the continent.
Some 90% of Europeans, who took part in an online survey, voted overwhelmingly for more daylight, especially in more northern countries, where the skies are black in the mornings and residents go home from school, or work, in the dark. Those in Spain also felt the same because the belief was that that longer hours of light would be beneficial for the tourism industry. The European Commission decided that March 2019 would be the last compulsory hour change among the 28 member States of the Union. But as yet, no single country has passed legislation, opting to do away with the twiceyearly clock change. That said, the European Parliament is aiming for the twice-annual clock adjustment to be scrapped from the year 2021, so that, within two to three years, nobody will have to worry about it again, except when they travel outside the continent. A leading neurologist has warned of the health effects last Saturday’s change will bring and how to alleviate them, although these are just temporary. Attention deficit, short-term memory problems and generalised “brain fog”, as well as tiredness, sleepiness, a depressed mood and irritability are the common problems seen after the clocks change – in spring or in winter. But although the clocks went back on Saturday night and it meant an extra hour’s sleep, if wanted, the body has to work harder to adjust to the new times. Even those who work set hours will experience “shift-worker syndrome”’, or
feel permanently jet-lagged, according to Dr Karol Uscamaita, of the Adsalutem Institute. Dr Uscamaita recommends preparing for the hour change in the days leading up to it by eating, sleeping and getting up 10 or 15 minutes earlier or later each day, depending on the time of year. But, if like now, after the autumn clock change, avoid middle-of-the-day naps whenever possible to give the body time to adjust. Improving sleep-wake hygiene, such as by avoiding stimulants, computer or mobile phone screens or heavy meals before bed, and arranging for natural light to enter the room ahead of waking up, curtains which do not filter out all the light from outside will help. Those with a more fixed routine will adapt quicker, although those who do not, such as shift workers, will find it takes much longer. The middle-aged and elderly will find it takes longer than younger adults or children, says Dr Uscamaita. And those aged 70 or more tend to wake up earlier, naturally, and can suddenly find themselves wide awake at 4am or even 5am. More daylight earlier in the
morning is good for the organism, although at times of the year when it gets dark early, people will feel tired earlier. That’s because a lack of natural light stimulates melatonin production, which aids sleep. Spain’s National Geographical Institute has drawn up a map, showing what times sunrise and sundown would be if the country were to stay on winter hours. After all, the effect will not be the same for people living in the Balearic Islands as for those living in Galicia, in the far north-west, just above Portugal. As at 29th March, 2020, the first full day of what would normally be summer hours next year, it is set to get dark at 20.58 in A Coruña (Galicia) and 20.15 in Barcelona, although, if winter hours were maintained, night would fall at 19.58 in A Coruña and 19.15 in Barcelona. At the other extreme, by switching the clocks in spring as usual, on the first day of Central European Summer Time (CEST), night falls at 20.12 in Mallorca, which would reduce to 17.12 if winter hours were kept. On the longest night of the year, 21st June, it normally gets dark in A Coruña at 22.18 and the sun comes
up at 7.53am, although this would change to 9.18pm and 6.53am respectively, if winter hours were kept. Effectively, it would put Spain on the same time-lag as the UK, Portugal and Morocco. By contrast, on the longest day in Mallorca, it gets dark at 9.21pm, and the sun comes up at 6.22am, but this would change to 8.21pm and 5.22am, if winter hours were maintained. On the shortest day, 21st December, it is dark in A Coruña until 9.03am, and night falls again at 6pm, although, if the clocks did not change and Spain stayed on summer hours, it would still be dark in the mornings until 10.03am, and the sun would not go down at night until 7pm. And on the shortest day, it is dark in the morning in Mallorca until 8.06 and gets dark again at night at 5.26pm, but if summer hours were maintained, it would not get light until 9.06am and would still be daylight until 6.26pm. Spain’s Government has opted to delay any decisions on the clock change until the last minute, in the year 2021, although it will need as careful study of the tables, to work out the impact on daily life. Clearly, it would be in the interests of the Balearic Islands to continue having daylight until 21.21pm in summer, and, in fact, the regional government has even asked to be able to go forward an hour in time, to keep the sun up until 10.21pm, as this would give holiday-makers longer to enjoy the beach, and other summer attractions. On the other hand, being dark until 10.03am in winter could make life uncomfortable for people in Galicia, who would spend at least the first hour in their offices in darkness. Either way, for those who need to reset their clocks manually, which would be rare these days, given that most people use mobile phones, tablets or computers to tell the time, and these automatically update, at 2.59am on Sunday 27th October, it will switch to 2am a minute later!

Wedding-dress thieves just not bright enough
TWO men, who broke into a car in La Laguna, helped themselves to the contents, including a €1,200 wedding dress, which they advertised for sale on an internet site. The thieves, both aged 36, already had criminal records, and the victim called the National Police to report the break-in. An investigation by officers soon revealed that it had been placed on a buyand-sell internet site, so they posed as buyers! The dress had sentimental value for the victim because it was an individual design… the only one sold in Tenerife. But it was soon returned to the owner, after the thieving pair had been detained and charged with theft. They were presented to the courts with a full police report, and are now awaiting sentencing.
Four migrants found dead
AT least four migrants died, and one more was believed to be missing, while attempting to reach the Canary Islands in a boat on Tuesday, according to Juan Salvador Leon the Spanish Government representative there. Daily newspaper La Vangardia reported that a Singapore-flagged merchant vessel discovered the boat earlier in the day, capsized with 33 migrants on board, and not far from the archipelago. A total of 29 migrants were rescued, while four were found already dead. The vessel will transfer the rescued travellers to Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas. An emergency, coordination centre reported earlier that two vessels with 158 migrants had reached the Canary Islands that morning.

THE Binter airline is now supplying flights to Gran Canaria on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Murcia’s Corvera Airport, which soon completes its first year. The original aim was to achieve one million passengers passing through the terminal annually, but it now appears that this figure will be exceeded.

THIS picture of a huge locust has appeared in Tenerife daily Diario de Avisos, following the recent spate of calimas on the island, which has sparked the arrival of these insects from Africa. A Tacoronte resident took this photograph of the insect, which had settled on her balcony, and she also sent the image to the newspaper because she had never seen such a big locust. The increase of Tenerife calimas means it is not unusual to sight these huge insects across the Canaries. Warm winds help them reach the neighbouring
islands, specifically across the south-east of the archipelago. But because of the recent winds, these huge locusts have also been spotted in the North. This locust species usually affects tomato and potato plants, as well as banana plantations. The insects are harmless to humans, but, because of their size, they can be extremely unpleasant, Several Tacaronte farmers have already complained that the giant locus is not only present, but is already affecting their crops. And farmers around El Fraile, Las Galletas, have also reported their presence. In 1958, Tenerife experienced an unprecedented plague of locusts, so much so, that locals claimed the swarms were of such a magnitude that they hid the sun.

Live breast-cancer shock for reporter on television AN American journalist, after agreeing to live-stream her firstever mammogram for breast-cancer awareness month, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Ali Meyer, 41, appeared relaxed and happy while sharing preparations for what she believed would be a routine screening in Oklahoma City’s Stephenson Cancer Centre last October. But the TV reporter, who filmed herself sobbing just minutes later, told viewers: “All right, so I was hoping for a routine little mammogram, and that’s not how this went. “I was so sure we’d have nothing today, but here we are… I have breast cancer, and I don’t have a ton of answers yet. “But I’m going to have an MRI next week to confirm exactly what we’re dealing with, and get a plan of action in place.” Ali also explained the impact of the unexpected diagnosis, saying: “It’s been hard and shocking. It does kind of rock you to your core. “This is not the news I was hoping to tell you about, to
raise breast cancer awareness, but it’s what I got.” Ali was diagnosed with noninvasive, ductile breast cancer, in her right breast, which is one of the most survivable forms of the disease, Naturally, she was distraught after being told that she would need to have her entire right breast removed. Bewildered Ali said: “It felt like forced mutilation, as though cancer was stealing away part of my body.” But she quickly came around to the idea of chatting with surgeons, and she even let cameras film Dr Oscar Masters, a plastic surgeon, performing reconstruction surgery. He said advances in surgical techniques meant that many women got to keep much of the breast skin, and their nipple, making reconstruction look far more natural. The doctor added: “Thankfully, Ali’s surgery went as planned.”

Holiday girl, 3, dies in Turkey… after taking an unknown medicine A BRITISH girl, aged three, who died on a Thomas Cook holiday while on a summer break, might have been poisoned by paracetamol, prescribed by Turkish doctors, a court heard.
Lily Gibson fell ill while on a summer break with her parents, Lisa and Chris, at the popular Bodrum holiday resort last August. The poorly toddler was taken to a local medical centre after “turning yellow” with jaundice, and was then sent away with a prescription for a nearby pharmacy. Her dad said the couple assumed the drug “was their version of Calpol”, and the inquest heard that Turkish officials still hadn’t handed over a report, despite requests from Britain. Lily, a keen dancer, later died in her hotel room after being given drugs, thought to have included paracetamol. A pre-inquest review heard
expert fears that Lily may have suffered fatal liver damage after being poisoned by an “inappropriate dose”. Coroner Prof Robert Forrest told the hearing in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, that Lily’s organs had been flown to the UK for analysis, by paediatric pathologist Dr Marta Cohen. Prof Forrest told family members how Dr Cohen was unable to determine a firm cause of death, but he expressed “worries” about the medicine she was told to take.
He said: “Lily plainly had a problem with her liver, and what Dr Cohen wants to do is look at all the details we have of the treatment Lily received, at the walk-in centre in Turkey. “Not to beat about the bush, the thing that slightly worries Dr Cohen could be an inappropriate dose of paracetamol being given to Lily. “I’m not in any way suggesting that is the cause of death, but it is something Dr Cohen wants to look at.”
Mr Gibson said Lily spent six hours at the medical centre and was wired up to a drip, before being discharged with a prescription for rehydration sachets, magnesium and a drug which, he said, “we assumed was their version of Calpol.” At a previous pre-inquest hearing, Mr Gibson was asked if he had been given “accurate information” by Turkish medics on what dosage to give his daughter. He told the coroner: “No, I was given a prescription by the receptionist and told to fetch it myself. I went to the pharmacy around the corner and they gave it to me.” Lily’s final inquest next year is also set to look at whether evidence of poor food safety at the hotel, which, reportedly, had a hygiene score of 54%, could have caused her to fall ill in the first place. It is suspected that she may have contracted a type of viral hepatitis, which could also have led to her death. But vital documents, including a Turkish police investigation report that could shed light
on the tragedy, have still not been handed over, despite requests to the British Foreign Office. Thomas Cook, which collapsed in September, had previously sent lawyers to the inquest hearings over fears that they could be sued. But Prof Forrest insisted that the company’s liquidation would not affect, in any way, the thoroughness of his inquest into Lily’s death. And he promised the family: “This is going to be a full and fearless investigation.” Friends and family raised more than £4,000 for the Gibsons in the wake of the tragedy, with one relative describing her death as the worst-possible scenario imaginable”. Lily, who was repatriated to the UK, is buried in a cemetery near the family’s home in Halfway, Sheffield. Supporters raising money for her devastated parents wrote online: “Lily passed away with absolutely no warning, whatsoever, and there was no way of preparing for the loss.” The next pre-inquest has been listed for January.

Make sure your money lasts as long as you do: five questions to consider By Paul Montague
Partner, blevins Franks
TODAY, most people can expect to live into their 70s, and beyond. While this is good news, increased life expectancy comes with some downsides; can we afford the cost of living longer? Assess whether your resources are on track to last your lifetime, by considering these five key questions. How much income will you need? Do you want just enough each month to live comfortably in retirement, or extra to afford luxuries, now and then? Would a modest income suffice, as long as you have rainy-day funds? Remember to factor in the effect of inflation on reducing your spending power each year. For example, if you spend €5,000 a month and inflation is 3% a year, in 10 years’ time you could need €6,720 a
month to maintain the same spending, and €9,030 in 20 years. How much do you want to leave behind? To leave a lasting legacy for your family or other heirs, you have to make sure you do not spend it in your own lifetime, without compromising on your own quality of life today. A holistic financial planning approach, that considers estate planning alongside your wealth management and tax planning, can prove invaluable here. How can you get the most from your pensions? Pensions are often the key to financial security in retirement, so take extreme care to do what’s right for you. While you should review
your options, your best approach could be taking no action at all, especially if you have a “final salary” pension that guarantees an income for life. In any case, beware of opportunities to “liberate” your pensions before the age of 55, as these are likely to be scams. Retired expatriates can benefit from transferring UK pensions to an EU/EEAbased Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), or reinvesting funds into Spanish-compliant arrangements. As well as tax efficiency, this can provide estate planning and currency flexibility. Take personalised, regulated advice to establish the most suitable pensions strategy for
your circumstances and goals. How can you make your savings and investments last? You should review whether your savings, investments and assets are working as hard as they can, and are protected from unnecessary taxation. For example, are you making the most of the tax-efficient opportunities in Spain, or holding onto UK assets that attract higher taxation? There are also currency considerations. Taking income in sterling, while spending euros, exposes your money to conversion fees and exchange-rate risk. Explore arrangements that allow you to invest in multiple currencies, and convert when it suits you, such as a Spaincompliant, life-assurance bond. Do not underestimate inflation here, too. While it is tempting to choose low-risk investments in your later years, your capital still needs to keep pace with the cost of living, and cash in the bank is unlikely to do this. Your financial adviser can recommend a diversified investment strategy, to meet
your situation, goals and risk tolerance. How can you limit the effect of taxation? Rising life expectancy generally brings higher taxation, as governments struggle to finance pension and healthcare services, for ageing populations. A specialist adviser, with crossborder experience, can recommend arrangements available to expatriates in Spain, that can significantly minimise taxation, making your money go further for you, and, potentially, your chosen heirs. Whatever your stage of life, good financial planning can help you afford the lifestyle you want, for as long as you need, so you can focus on enjoying your time in Spain. This article should not be construed as providing any personalised investment advice. You should take advice for your circumstances. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com
the bar. Witnesses said an MP had accused Mr Starkie of using abusive language to other customers, and towards members of the bar staff. They also said he appeared to punch the door frame on his way out of the bar, but No.10 declined to comment on his behaviour. Mr Starkie works at the Home Office, which is responsible for law and order, as well as domestic security, and other onlookers said he apologised for his behaviour as he was escorted out. A House of Commons spokesperson said: “We can confirm there was an incident with an individual in Strangers Bar. The individual
was asked to leave, and was escorted from the estate by Parliamentary security.” At a Tory Conference earlier this month, Ms Patel said: “The Conservative Party takes its rightful place as the Party of Law and Order in Britain once again. “We stand with the brave men and women of our police and security services, and we stand against the criminals.” Strangers Bar, one floor down from the Commons chamber, is open any time the House is sitting. It offers reduced-rate booze to MPs and their guests, as well as views of the London Eye and the River Thames.
Arguments nearly over as MPs agree to an Election WEEKS of petty squabbling and political deadlock over Brexit, in Parliament, ceased on Tuesday, with an overwhelming vote to return to the ballot box for a General Election on 12th December. Ministers in the House of Commons triggered a public vote, after weeks of political deadlock, 438 in favour and 20 against, a majority of 418. Meanwhile, Home Secretary Priti Patel’s Chief of Staff was escorted from a House of Commons bar that evening, by armed police, who were called, shortly before 7pm. James Starkie (left), a senior, special advisor at the Home Office, was seen in Strangers’ Bar in Parliament during the afternoon, while MPs were debating whether to call an Election. Riding A Dream “A big part of my life has been proving people wrong. I am thrilled that I am part of a shift in social understanding of what women can achieve and what they can be good at. There’s quite a stereotype around Muslim girls and them ‘not being able to follow their sporting dreams’. I want to be a role model to anyone who wants to do something that they wouldn’t initially believe was in their comfort zone and allow people to follow their aspirations and dreams.” - Khadijah Mellah Riding a Dream follows the remarkable story of Khadijah Mellah, 18, from Peckham, South London who made history and global headlines this summer by becoming the first British Muslim woman to win at one of British horse racing’s most prestigious festivals, Glorious Goodwood, barely four months after she had sat on a racehorse for the first time. Charting her journey from the charity Ebony Horse Club in Brixton where she first learnt to ride, to one of the highlights of the global sporting calendar, the documentary follows Khadijah as she prepares to compete in the Magnolia Cup, an all-female charity race against the likes of Olympian Victoria Pendleton, model Vogue Williams and professional event rider Sophie van der Merwe. With just four months to prepare for the race of her life, Khadijah had to juggle studying for her A-Levels and fasting for Ramadan with a gruelling training and assessment regime in order to just make it to the start line. However, all her determination, discipline and passion paid off when, against all the odds, she won the race on a horse called Haverland, resulting in one of the biggest sporting success stories of 2019 and securing her spot in British sporting history. Growing up in Peckham with no real connection to horses before she started riding at Ebony Horse Club, Khadijah’s fairytale story broke down barriers and stereotypes and proved that there are no limits to what you can achieve when you put your mind to it. Hers is a story that not only impressed a nation but also inspired the world.

Charles 50 Years a Prince
Prince Charles became Prince of Wales aged just nine years old, but it was not until 11 years later, in the summer of 1969, that he was formally invested with the title by the Queen in a spectacular ceremony at Caernarfon Castle. The event was watched by half a billion people around the world putting Wales firmly on the global stage. But it was not without controversy as, for some, the celebration also became a moment for nationalist protest. Five decades on, the Prince is now the longest-serving Prince of Wales in history and his affection for the nation and its people is as strong as ever. Around the world he is widely regarded as one of the nation’s greatest ambassadors. In commemoration of this landmark anniversary, ITV has been granted unique access to the Prince at his secluded Welsh home of Llwynywermod, and with the Duchess of Cornwall on their annual Welsh tour, making new friends and reconnecting with people from the Prince’s past.

The Spring sunshine brings new life and the crowds return to the busiest mountain in Britain. Railwayman Steff re-opens the summit cafe and also welcomes a ‘big spender’ to the mountain as Shirley Bassey arrives to unveil a train carriage named in her honour. The finale finds Rob (Killian Scott) and Cassie (Sarah Greene) forced into a face-to-face reunion. Arrests are made and both Operation Vestal and Operation Mirror are officially closed. Rob realises he is in love with Cassie, but he has destroyed their relationship. Cassie, lost and grief-stricken, fights to find peace and love. As Rob leaves Dublin forever, he stops at Knocknaree, and watches as the woods are flattened to make way for a road. Frank (Tom Vaughan Lawlor) is also there and has found something, a sharp piece of stone, shaped into an arrowhead. Worked into it by some long-ago hand, is a design. A pictogram, crude but potent, of a man, his head crowned with antlers. Frank offers it to Rob, but Rob doesn’t want it.

Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards Marking its 20th anniversary, the esteemed Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards, in partnership with TSB, returns to ITV this November. Hosted once more by the inimitable Carol Vorderman, celebrities and public figures including Prince Charles, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Pratt, Sir Michael Caine, Dame Helen Mirren and Sir David Jason will help celebrate 2019’s worthy winners at the Grosvenor House in London’s Park Lane. Sir Ben Kingsley, Dua Lipa, Gareth Southgate, Dina Asher-Smith, Harry Kane, Michael Sheen, Frank and Christine Lampard, Adam Lambert, Maya Jama, Jodie Kidd, Amanda Holden, Martin and Shirlie Kemp, Anne-Marie, Emeli Sande, Craig Revel-Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and the cast of Strictly, Dermot O’Leary, Louis Walsh and Police Commissioner Cressida Dick will also be among those honouring this year’s everyday heroes. This year’s remarkable winners include 7-year-old Jaydee-Lee Dummett who saved her family’s lives by raising the alarm when she recognised the signs of deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. Schoolboy Ben Hedger is honoured for steering his mum’s car across a dual carriageway after she collapsed at the wheel at 65mph. 11-year-old Dante Marvin, who defies an agonising condition to inspire others with his motto ‘there are no disabilities, only abilities’, plus Makaton creator Margaret Walker and police officer SGT Stevie Bull are nominated, the latter for her quick-thinking when a man was brandishing a gun at hospital staff. Alongside these extraordinary stories of courageousness, bravery and going the extra mile will be a host of on the night surprises. Dancing superstar and Diversity frontman Ashley Banjo joins Carol as a roving presenter. Award-winning singer Emeli Sandé will perform on the night.

Max does his best to take control, while Jake finds himself falling in love with Angie, the dead man’s niece. With suspicions surrounding Walter’s death growing, Max desperately needs to regain some control over the situation and starts by trying his best to derail Kenny, the private detective he engaged to assuage Angie’s suspicions. Kenny is a drunken no-hoper whose wife has left him, but this intriguing case has given him the purpose and drive he needs to get back on track and win his wife back - much to Max’s horror. Max’s next port of call is Walter’s all-knowing neighbour Sheila, who witnessed the brothers’ deathly deed. She tells Max their secret is safe, but her silence comes at a price. As Max struggles to lay his hands on Sheila’s hush money, the cracks in his marriage to his increasingly-suspicious wife Claire are starting to show. She’s suspicious of him but is also guilty of her own deception, as she tentatively embarks on an affair with a woman from her gym, Tina. Not that Max would notice, he’s too preoccupied with trying to put out fires. Max is played by Mark Bonnar, Jake by Jamie Sives, Angie by Ruth Bradley, Kenny by Emun Elliot, Sheila by Ellie Haddington, Claire by Sian Brooke, Tina by Moyo Akande and Michael Nardone as Henry the lawyer.

Tonight’s episode follows the work of the Murder Investigation team in South London, who are called in when a 38 year-old man is violently attacked on a bus. Meanwhile the Met’s Public Order Command prepare for US President Donald Trump’s first visit to the UK, and in Croydon response officers deal with a drunken traveller who is refusing to move his caravan from a supermarket car park. In South London, a 38 yearold man is violently attacked on a bus and later dies from his injuries. DS Matt Read from the Murder Investigation team is brought in to try and identify the attacker. The suspect has made a serious error in leaving his handprint on the door of the bus, giving detectives a vital clue as they try and bring the attacker to justice. The Met’s Public Order Command police 250 protests across the Capital every year - three of those protests happen on President Trump’s first visit to the UK in July 2018. It is the Met’s responsibility to keep the President safe and to facilitate any peaceful protests in London. The first day involves The Women’s March and the launch of the Trump blimp, but largely goes without incident. But the Public Order team expect some disorder on the second day of protest, when the Pro Trump and Anti-Trump supporters come face to face. In South London, response officers PC Ben Anawachagul and PC Tom Dicks are on patrol in Croydon when they are called to assist enforcement officers trying to evict a traveller in his caravan from a supermarket car park. Tom and Ben try to de-escalate the situation as the man refuses to leave and hurls abuse at the officers. As more back up arrives, the officers try to talk him round.

Paedo catholic priest snared by policeman A CATHOLIC paedophile priest has been jailed after a man he arranged to meet, in the hope of abusing his two-year-old son, was, actually, an undercover police officer.
Father Matthew Jolley was duped by the officer he first approached on the Grindr dating app in September. It took the priest under 20 minutes to tell the undercover officer, who was posing as a 36-year-old bisexual man, that he was sexually interested in young children. Throughout a number of depraved chats, 32-year-old Jolley admitted that while he liked girls, mainly, a “cute” boy would also be of interest, reported the Manchester Evening News.
After telling the police officer he wanted to “do his twoyear-old son”, who did not exist, the priest then sent an indecent image of himself. The lurid conversation shifted from Grindr to Kik Messenger and later to Wickr, an encrypted platform for private chats. In these chats, Jolley revealed his sick fantasy of “sharing” the child with his dad. Jolley has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Man punches crocodile, just to stay in one piece!
A MAN’S leg was savaged in Australia by a crocodile after he stepped on it, accidentally, believing it was a log. He had been out hunting in murky water near Minjilang, on Croker Island, near Darwin… at lunchtime! Elston Lami Lami, 42, had a near escape as the animal then went for his groin, shredding his shorts, but he avoided serious injury. At first, the reptile stayed
THE ringleader of an armstrafficking from Luxembourg, on Europe’s Most Wanted list, has been captured on the Costa del Sol, having been on the run after a botched attempt at robbing a security company in Luxembourg City, in April 2013. The unnamed fugitive had led a heavily-armed team, of up to seven men, to attack the headquarters of a Gasperich company, which transports money. The gang detonated explosive devices at the access doors before attacking the interior security systems with automatic weapons. However, the police arrived before they could reach the cash, forcing them to flee. Their two vehicles were picked up in Belgium by a patrol car, but the robbers lured it into a forest before ambushing it with a volley of 47 bullets, before torching one of their own vehicles and escaping on foot. A European Arrest Warrant was released immediately, for crimes of attempted murder,
illicit trafficking of weapons, ammunition and explosives, robbery with violence and membership of a criminal organisation. But it took more than six years before the ringleader, who faces a 22-year sentence at home, was traced to the Malaga coast. On 26th October, Belgium and Luxembourg investigators contacted the National Police, after learning that the mastermind could be hiding on the Costa del Sol. After discovering it was his birthday that same day, police knew they had to act quickly, and the case was given top priority, following a tip-off that he would be hanging out in the Marbella area. And, in the early hours of 27th October, the fugitive was tracked down to a club in the Puerto Banus party hotspot and arrested. Police then found the fake French identity card he had been using to fly under the radar, which will be of no further use to him because he will be extradited to face justice in Luxembourg.
still beneath his foot, until, suddenly, it lunged upwards and bit his upper-right leg. Mr Lama told local radio station ABC from a hospital bed: “When he came up, and I looked at his eye, he had crocodile tears on it, as if to say, ‘you’re mine. You’re my lunch’. “I hit him three times in the nose, and he let me go. But he came back again and tried to attack me. But when he snapped at me, I grabbed him and held him by the jaws with two hands. But I was getting weak so I thought the only way to get his attention was to hit him again…I had to hit him again!’ Thankfully, Elston’s cousin
was there to yell and distract the crocodile, as well as two dogs, who barked at the reptile. Brave Elston escaped with just two bites, but he still had to walk for half-an-hour on a wounded leg, back to his car. “Whatever pain I was going through, I didn’t want to be shown up,” he told the radio station. But at the car, he took a few paracetamol tablets, bandaged himself up, and headed for the local Community Health Centre. He was then airlifted to Royal Darwin Hospital, and will have to stay there for several days before he can go home. But what a tale he can relate when he does!
on her rare condition, But just three surgeons in the world know how to perform it, and one of them is in Spain. In layman’s terms, the doctor said: “Her neck cannot withstand the weight of her head, and if she turns her head to the left, she could partially dislocate the cervical column in her neck. If it dislocates completely, it would be like an internal decapitation, and she would die instantly.”
It’s no wonder, then, that Guy worries all the time when he is at work. Rachel wears a collar, but for just four hours a day, since any longer would mean losing muscle mass in her neck and head, and that would exacerbate the problem. Her condition is known as Basilar Invagination, which means the upper part of her cervical column pushes against the base of her skull.
British woman to seek rare surgery in Spain
A BRITISH woman with a rare condition, which means that a simple turn of her head could be fatal, is hoping to travel to Barcelona for pioneering surgery. Rachel Pighills, 33, and her husband Guy, 39, have been trying to raise the €150,000 necessary for an operation

Jail for shop owner, who torched the premises to claim insurance pay-out Photo: Twitter
THE owner of a furniture shop, 57-year-old Pascal Blasio, has been jailed for 20 years for initiating a gas explosion, deliberately, which injured 81 people. The Gillngham man, a part-time resident in Spain’s Benalmadena, was found guilty at Liverpool Crown Court of causing an explosion to endanger life. He was jailed for a further four years, to run concurrently, for fraud. Yet it was a “miracle”, said the judge, that no one had been killed. The court was told that the blast from his Homes In Style furniture store, in New Ferry, Wirral, on 25th March 2017, and subsequent £50,000 insurance claim, was an “insurance job gone wrong”. His company was on the brink of folding, said the prosecutor, and witnesses had seen products being moved out of the shop, ahead of the explosion, leaving it “virtually empty”. The blast damaged and destroyed a total of 63 properties. and 68 people were evacuated from their homes. Among the
injured was a 21-yearold man, who suffered a serious brain injury and is still unable to work. The judge told Blasio: “You deliberately engineered a gas explosion at your failing furniture shop in New Ferry, with the intention of making a false insurance claim. You left anyone who had been in the immediate vicinity to the inevitable explosion to their fate.” He added: “I have no doubt that you intended to cause an explosion, large enough to demolish the building, for it was crucial to your purpose that the entire contents of the building were destroyed. “Partial destruction would expose the fact that you had emptied your showroom of most of the stock, for which loss you intended to claim through insurance.” He added: “Your scheme could not succeed without completely demolishing this building and the adjoining dance school. It did not matter to you that the proprietors of a dance school should lose their life’s work. It did not matter to you that the owners of the Chinese restaurant opposite would lose not only their homes but their livelihoods too.”
Shamed Labour MP paid to have sex with two men DISGRACED Labour MP Keith Vaz was taken to hospital, hours after it emerged that he faced a record six-month Commons ban for damaging the reputation of Parliament.
The veteran’s office made the announcement on Monday night, after a damning report found that he had “expressed willingness” to buy cocaine for two male prostitutes, and that it was “more likely than not” he had paid for sex. The Commons Standard Committee recommended a six-month suspension from Parliament, more than three years after the scandal had been exposed by the Sunday Mirror. Mr Vaz’s office said, initially, that “he had been treated for a serious mental-health condition for the last three years”, as a result of the August 2016 events. A further statement on his website then said: “He has today been admitted to hospital, and this office will not be making any further comments.” The MP’s office did not say why he was admitted. Yesterday’s report said the 62-year-old showed “disregard for the law by expressing willingness” to buy cocaine in a rendezvous with two sex workers, whom he told: “We need to get this party started.” But the report found that it was “more likely than not” he had paid for sex, even though he said he was consulting them about “decorating his flat”. Mr Vaz paid the escorts in cash, and money was also paid into
a bank account used by one of them, by a man linked to a charity set up by the MP. As chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, Mr Vaz has said, publicly, he was “not convinced” that men who pay for sex should face prosecution. Within weeks of a report from the committee, he himself paid money to male escorts in a flat he owns near his family home in Edgware, North West London. Mr Vaz has had at least two meetings with the escorts. In a 90-minute rendezvous on 27th August, the former Minister for Europe offered to cover the cost of cocaine if it were brought to the flat, but said he did not want any himself. MPs ruled that his behaviour was a “very serious breach” of the Code of Conduct, which says members “must not damage the reputation and
integrity of the Commons”. The Committee savaged him for “failing, repeatedly, to answer questions” and trying to obstruct the probe. And MPs dismissed his claim that a transcript and recording, supplied by the Sunday Mirror, were unreliable, after asking for a forensic analysis. Mr Vaz told investigators he did not pay for sex, and that the men were there to discuss “decorating his flat”. He also claimed that he lost his memory after drinking a glass of “spiked” water. But the scathing Commons Standards Committee report branded his explanations as “frankly, ludicrous”. If agreed by MPs, the ban will trigger a recall petition against the shamed MP, which would enable voters to force a byelection, booting him out of office.
Slippery operation leaves 16 arrested SIXTEEN people are under arrest for operating an illegal, European set-up for elvertrafficking, valued at some €600,000 in Asturias, Guipuzcoa and Madrid. The Guardia Civil’s “Operacion FAME” also resulted in the seizure of 400kg of young eels. Guardia officers said they believed the 16 detainees were members of four organised groups operating illegally in Spain and France. The group
based in Asturias brought in the undeclared elvers from France, and put them with those they had acquired legally from Asturian and Basque rivers. They then sent them to Portugal by taxi to evade controls, and from there they were illegally exported by air in suitcases checked in by Asian ‘mules’. The Madrid side of the network send larger shipments by plane, declaring them as if they were any other kind of fish or seafood, or even veal. Investigators also believe there were plans to try sending the elvers camouflaged in beer barrels. Elvers are considered a great
delicacy in Spain, and a very pricey one. According to the Administrative Authority of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), in the 2018 to 2019 season young eels were selling for around €1,500 a kilo. The Guardia Civil believe the four organisations could have obtained overall annual profits of more than €6 million. The Guardia released all the seized elvers into the Bidasoa and Orio rivers, in collaboration with the Navarra and Guipuzcoa government environment agencies.

Dictator Franco now removed to a new cemetery
LATE fascist leader General Franco has left the Valle de los Caídos mausoleum after 44 years, and now lies in the municipal cemetery, serving the Madrid neighbourhoods of Mingorrubio and El Pardo. Family members of the dictator, who died in 1975, carried the coffin on their shoulders, covered with a preConstitutional Spanish flag, which is a symbol often used by the far right. Franco supporters were kept back from the graveyard by authorities, but crowds of them still shouted “Arriba España”, one of the main dictatorship slogans, and “Viva Franco”. And one man even travelled from China “to see his idol being buried”. Franco has been interred alongside his wife, Carmen Polo, in the original coffin from 1975, despite its severelydeteriorated state. Justice Minister Dolores Delgado, who attended in her capacity as notary, and the dictator’s grandson, Francis Franco Martínez-Bordiú, did not speak to each other at any stage of the proceedings, throughout the exhumation, burial or transfer of the ex-leader’s remains in a Super Puma helicopter. Around 250 people were waiting in Mingorrubio when the aircraft landed, including reporters and relatives. Spain’s government has said fines will be levied on and
criminal action taken against those seen wearing T-shirts, baseball caps and carrying flags with pro-Franco symbols and messages, because any exaltation of the deceased head of State is banned by law. The family were also told they were not allowed to display symbols of this type, “except in privacy”, during their personal funeral ceremony, although Francis Franco carried a folded-up, pre-Constitutional flag. They were warned that any such symbols left behind in the Mingorrubio-El Pardo basilica would be removed. A total of 22 relatives attended the ceremony, including grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their spouses, since Franco’s only daughter, Carmen MartínezBordiú, died a year ago. The coffin arrived at the churchyard at 2.41pm, although the team behind the exhumation were already on site, in the Valle de los Caídos, at 7am. Relatives had appointed a priest, Ramón Tejero, to host the private funeral and recite the Lord’s Prayer for the late General. His father, Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero, 87, was behind the attempted coup d’état on 23rd February, 1981, in what is now the Parliament building, during the investiture
ceremony of Leopoldo CalvoSotelo. He was the second President of the newly-democratic Spain, after the resignation of the late Adolfo Suárez, who, along with Rex Emeritus King Juan Carlos I, is credited with bringing about the transition to democracy and creating the Spanish Constitution. Lt Col Tejero attempted to enter the cemetery during the reburial, but was barred by police. Franco joins Trujillo, Stalin and Mussolini, along with other exhumed world dictators, who have been exhumed and moved to more discreet locations. The grave Franco now lies in had actually been reserved for him and Carmen Polo in the 1960s by then President Carlos Arias Navarro. But it was then decided to bury the fascist leader in the Valle de los Caídos (“Valley of the Fallen”) in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, which, effectively, is a resting place for heroes and martyrs, as well as Franco’s victims. This factor led to the decision to exhume him, out of respect for relatives of those who died during his regime, and more than 100,000 people attended the funeral, or the prior corpore insepulto service, either to pay homage to their “beloved leader”, or to ensure that their oppressor was, in fact, dead!

Mum, aged 98, still looks after her 80-year-old son
A WOMAN aged 98 went viral after deciding to move into the same care home in which her 80-yearold son was living, so that she could tend to him. It is a heartfelt tale of the love of a mother being so strong, even at such a late age, and Ada Keeting is the precious mum who made it her task to look after her son’s well-being. Tom Keating had made Liverpool’s Moss View care home his new base back in 2016, because he needed extra care and support. And that was when his mum decided to move into the same home, to be closer to
him, and care for her eldest. The two enjoy every moment they can with each other, and, in their free time, they watch ITV soap Emmerdale, or play games. Ada and Tom, from Wavertree, Liverpool, have always had a special connection, since they have always lived together, and he never married. They have even crafted a routine of sorts. “I say goodnight to Tom in his room every night, and I’ll go and say good morning to him,” she said. “I’ll tell him I’m coming down for breakfast.” And even after all these years, she revealed that they still love each other deeply. “When I go out to the hairdressers, he’ll look for me to see when I’m coming back,” she said.
Marijuana plants were ‘buried’ in greenhouse POLICE have seized a huge marijuana plantation, hidden in the basement of a luxury villa on the Costa del Sol. An impressive greenhouse, controlling the plants, was constructed underground in a Mijas property, an area with a large British expat population. However, after receiving a tip-off, The National Police staked out the home and discovered it was occupied by two Italians. An investigation quickly ascertained that the two men were stealing electricity, giving the authorities enough to obtain a search warrant. The ensuing raid revealed a large-scale marijuana operation, with the basement greenhouse containing 511 plants in an advanced stage of growth. Officers also found air-conditioners, fans, high-power lamps and irrigation systems, among other tools, designed to speed up the growing process. Two scales, two vacuumpacking machines and two cars were also seized. The two men, aged 44 and 35, were swiftly arrested for drug-trafficking and electricity fraud.

World’s oldest woman dies, at the age of 123!
1st November - 7th November 2019
THE website owned by a sperm bank has been blocked, following the case of a woman giving birth to a child with dwarfism. The woman, a successful writer, whose identity has not been disclosed, chose a father for her child from pictures of donors on the site. She was attracted by his fair-haired looks, higher education, and height of more than 6ft, according to reports in Russia. And, at the age of 40-plus, she believed this was her last chance to have a child. She then had successful IVF treatment at her private Moscow clinic, after paying for his sperm.
Woman’s ‘tall” baby was actually a dwarf
But in the latter stages of pregnancy, the unborn boy was detected with suspected achondroplasia, a rare, incurable disease suffered by one child in 20,000, which causes dwarfism, a Moscow court heard. This was confirmed after birth, and she was told that her son, now two, would grow to a maximum height of roughly 4ft as an adult, and that his limbs and facial features would not develop “correctly”. The woman said she wanted to warn other sperm-bank customers of the risk, and a district court ordered the website of Danish sperm bank, Cryos in Russia, to be blocked.
Accion del Sol News A RUSSIAN great-great grandmother, Tanzilya Bisembeyeva, believed to be the oldest woman in the world, has died at the age of 123. She was born two months before the coronation of tragic last tsar Nicholas II in 1896, and is said to have lived during three centuries. She survived the Russian Revolution, the tyranny of Stalin and the Soviet collapse, through, she said: “optimism and hard work.” She also drank kefir, which is fermented milk, and friends said
she was over 100 before she saw a doctor. Nurgali Baitemirov, the senior official in her Astrakhan district, told Russian government newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta: “She died peacefully, and was buried in the family cemetery. The whole village came to see her depart, on her last journey.” Tanzilya was 53 when she had her first child, a son, by her second husband. She had two more sons, who, between them, produced 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two greatgreat-grandchildren. Her claim to be the oldest woman in her country was recognised by the Russian Book of Records and, evidently, the Russian Government.
Presents for the doggies!
WITH Christmas around the corner, we have again started a campaign after the success of last year, asking our friends and supporters of Accion Del Sol to donate a shoebox of goodies for the dogs. These can include tinned dog food for our older dogs and puppies, puppy milk, dog toys, dog collars and leads. Marion and her team do such an amazing job at the refuge, so I thought it would be great to bring some Christmas cheer to the 200+ dogs. You can deliver your box personally to the refuge by the 20th December, during our opening hours. Alternatively, call 687 905 511, to arrange for your donations to be collected. Please write your name on the box, so that we know who kindly donated. We would like to thank you in advance for your help and support. Adoptions The island’s refuges are full of abandoned dogs, so please adopt and don’t buy. Please spread the word, amongst your Spanish friends, about the dire situation, here in Tenerife. We have 200 gorgeous dogs here, all desperately seeking loving homes. We need to find adopters for the
dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every dog is microchipped and fully vaccinated, and is heartworm and flea-free. They each have a passport, and have been sterilised, so you can be sure your new dog has the best start to its new life. Please adopt a dog, and don’t buy, and please never let your dog breed. If we all help the dogs in the full refuges, we can make a difference! Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the north-bound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Live Arico News YOUNG Mum Flor was left to fend for herself and ten new pups, in the terrible weather we had last week. A call came from a concerned member of the public, and Mark, our shelter manager, drove up. Although she was clearly terrified, she allowed Mark to place the pups in the safety of the van, and she followed, gratefully. They are all now dry and safe in the shelter. The cost of vaccinating and making the pups “family ready’” will be over 1,000 euros, so we are having a couple of fundraising benefits, to help raise this amount. If you are a business and
Caught in the storm can kindly donate any kind of prize, we would be truly grateful. Please contact either Siobhan Ferguson on Facebook, or look at our Live PAWS Rescued Animals Tenerife page to contact us. You can drop anything off at either charity shop. Congratulations! Many thanks to Sarah Wagstaff, Hayley Butler and Adam Walsh, who recently completed a two-day trek up Mount Teide. They raised over €4,500 for the animals in our care, and we are really grateful. Meet Pinky!
JUST two days into the start of this year, this black beauty arrived. She had been found wandering around Granadilla, by a young girl, who kept her for a couple of nights to see if she could find the owner. She wasn’t successful. She brought her to K9 and we named her Pinky. She is a medium-large, mixed breed, and we think she is 2-3 years old. When she first arrived she was very scared, agitated and confused, which is understandable, and we all did our very best to make her feel secure and safe. Around the same time she was brought to K9, a male dog was left tied up outside the shelter. Those of you who come and walk the dogs will know Kaiser. He was very chilled in the kennels, so we decided to match the two of them up, and they worked well together. Kaiser seemed to calm her down a little bit. Pinky can be very tense and anxious in the kennels, and can bark at other dogs, particularly males. But, once outside, she is a very sweet, playful girl who loves human attention, and just wants a second chance at a loving, forever home. She
does have a lot of energy, so would need a daily walk. There are moments when we catch her playing with Kaiser in the kennels, and it is very funny to watch, and it shows, when she is relaxed, just how fun and sweet she can be. She really enjoys being taken for walks, and our amazing volunteers often take her and Kaiser to the beach, for a break away from the kennels. She is a little bit afraid of the water, so we are trying to build up her confidence with this, and we are hoping her new owners would be willing to continue to do so. She is heartworm positive, but this can be easily managed with medication. Can you help us find her a new loving forever home? We do not know how she ended up wandering around Granadilla, but she didn’t deserve to be left alone. Please help us, and let’s get Pinky out of the kennels so she can feel all the love in the world. You can visit any day between 9.30am-1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! Foster carers have been struggling, either fishing kittens out from under the bed, or with tiny cages (some designed for hamsters). The kittens, when very young, need to be contained, both for their own safety and easy accessibility. It also makes taming shy kittens that much easier. As the kittens get older, and more adventurous, they are let out several times a day to explore their surroundings. If you are able to make a donation, no matter how small, it would be much appreciated. One cage is only €43, so, hopefully, we can purchase several. You can send money via PayPal at info@cats-welfaretenerife.com or call in at

IT is that time of year again, when The Royal British Legion asks for your help in raising funds for its annual Poppy Appeal. This is a way of saying ‘Thank you’ to all those service personnel whose actions, past and present, allow us to live the lives we do. The Royal British Legion is a one-off organisation, run by itself, and, although it recognises other charitable organisations, it is not related to them. The monies raised help to support ex Service personnel and/or their dependents, who need help and assistance. It may mean a visit, just to talk, or a small repair that cannot be completed by the person, or even something larger, like remodelling a home for a disability. All these people are the ones who must be assisted by The Royal British Legion. Boxes of poppies and collection tins have been distributed, in the south of
Tenerife, by hard-working helpers. Should you require a box for your venue, please contact Duncan, our new Poppy Appeal Organiser, on 627 764 264, or e-mail jjkelly. clam.15@hotmail.com. The boxes and tins will be collected after 12th November 2019. With your generosity, the 2018 Poppy Appeal, here in South Tenerife, raised €11,348.88. Please ensure that your donation to this year’s Poppy Appeal goes into a genuine Poppy Appeal collecting box. Please give generously and wear your poppy with pride, so that The Royal British Legion can continue its work, helping those ex-service personnel and their dependents in need, including here, in the Canary Islands.

Little powerhouses of nutrients KIWIS are small fruits that pack a lot of flavour and plenty of health benefits. Their green flesh is sweet and tangy, and is full of nutrients like Vitamins C, K, and E, and folate and potassium. They also contain a lot of antioxidants, and are a good source of fibre. Their small black seeds are edible, as is the fuzzy brown peel. Thanks to different growing locations, kiwis can be in season year-round. They’re grown in California from November to May, and in New Zealand from June to October. Kiwi can also be found in supplement form. Can help treat asthma It’s thought that the high amount of Vitamin C and antioxidants that kiwis contain can actually help treat people with asthma. One study from 2000 found that there was a beneficial effect on the lung function among those who consumed fresh
fruit, regularly, including kiwis. Fresh fruit like kiwi may reduce wheezing in susceptible children. Aids digestion Kiwis have plenty of fibre, which is already good for digestion. Boosts the immune system Just one cup of kiwi provides about 273% of your RDA of Vitamin C. This vitamin is an essential nutrient when

it comes to boosting your immune system to ward off disease. Kiwis may support immune function and reduce the likelihood of developing cold or flu-like illnesses. This is especially true in at-risk groups, like adults over the age of 65, and young children. Reduces risk of other health conditions Oxidative stress can result in damage to our DNA.
This can lead to health problems. Partially thanks to its antioxidants, regular consumption of kiwi or kiwi extract reduces the likelihood of oxidative stress. Since oxidative DNA damage is strongly linked to colon cancer, regular kiwi consumption could lower your risk of colon cancer, too. Can help manage blood pressure Not only can kiwi fruits provide an extra boost to our immune system, they can also help us to manage our blood pressure. Three kiwis a day can lower blood pressure more than one apple a day. Long term, this may also mean a lowered risk for conditions that can be caused by high blood pressure, like strokes or heart attacks. Reduces blood clotting In addition to helping us manage our blood pressure, eating two to three kiwis a day significantly lowers the risk of blood clotting. They also reduce the amount of fat in the blood. Protects against vision loss Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision

loss, and kiwis might help protect your eyes from it. By eating three servings of fruit a day, the risk of macular degeneration decreases by 36%. Potential risks Eating kiwi fruit is regarded as safe for most people. The main exception is for those who are allergic. Signs of a kiwi allergy include itchy throat, swollen tongue, trouble swallowing, vomiting and hives. Your risk for allergy to kiwi increases if you’re also allergic to hazelnuts, avocados, latex, wheat, figs or poppy seeds. Forms and dosages Kiwis can be eaten as they are, or blended into a smoothie. It is best not to cook kiwi so that it retains its Vitamin C content. Eating one to three kiwis a day is enough for most people to get the boost of nutrients from the fruit. Recipes If you want to add more kiwi to your diet to reap its benefits, you can easily incorporate it into a number of recipes. By Val Sainsbury OIL pulling, which is rinsing the mouth with plant-based oil, in an effort to rid the mouth and body of toxins, is an ancient folk remedy that first originated in India, between 3,000-5,000 years ago. Along with chewing sticks and eating herbs, oil pulling is a component of natural healing processes, described in ancient Ayurveda texts. Swishing oil around in your mouth for up to 20 minutes helps remove harmful bacteria, fungus and other micro-organisms, existing in your mouth, throat, teeth and gums. Oil pulling provides health benefits: Reduces bad breath (halitosis) Often caused by the byproduct of chemicals and gases produced by bacteria in the mouth, halitosis can be an embarrassing social

The fresh face of oil condition. If you get rid of the bacteria in your mouth through oil pulling, you can reduce bad breath! In fact, a study found that in a group of 20 adolescents, oil pulling therapy significantly reduced all markers for bad breath, and was just as effective as synthetic, drug-store mouthwash! Prevents diseases of the gums and mouth Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, and occurs when the immune system starts attacking bacteria in the plaque. Seeing as how coconut oil is an antiinflammatory, it is extremely useful in this case. Cavities are also caused by build-up of harmful bacteria, which can easily be alleviated by oil pulling. Whitens teeth Conventional whitening strips for the teeth contain bleach, fluoride, tar, aspartame, aluminum and benzene. It is a toxic nightmare just waiting to happen. Almost every account of oil pulling has proven that it can help whiten teeth instantly! After
two weeks, you will notice a much brighter, whiter smile, healthier gums and a nice pink tongue. Improves skin conditions When you eliminate toxins from the body, your skin will dramatically improve. These range from acne to eczema, psoriasis, and a variety of other dermatitis-related issues. Alleviates headaches and migraines A build-up of toxins in the body can lead to headaches and migraines. The standard theory that tension headaches are caused by widening of blood vessels, and migraines are caused by constriction of the blood
vessels, may hold truth, but recent evidence now shows that the major cause of both tension headaches and migraines is the retention of toxins or other tissue irritants in the nervous system. Oil pulling helps to eliminate bacteria and toxins from the body, so it has been documented in a variety of cases to help alleviate, and even eliminate, tension headaches and migraines! Full-body detox Overall, oil pulling is a great way to achieve full-body detox. Our mouth is the home to many bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, and the toxins they produce as a by-
product. Their toxic waste solidifies in our body, and can lead to a variety of different conditions. When our immune system becomes overloaded with excessive stress, poor diet and environmental toxins, then these organisms and their toxic wastes actually spread throughout the body, causing disease and illness as a result of chronic inflammation. Oil pulling will help target these foreign invaders at the site of entry (the mouth), and will prevent them from further entering the body, and thus allow the body to completely detox. Helps alleviate asthma and congestion A variety of documented cases online have shown that oil-pulling has helped individuals completely eliminate their asthma symptoms, and helps clear up bronchitis and congestion. These are largely the result of an inflammatory response in the body, which oil pulling can help lessen, or reduce completely.
Driving habits that can cost you money By Emma
from Motorworld
WHETHER you have been driving for years, or are an occasional or new driver, then you will probably have picked up bad driving habits. We all have bad habits, in all parts of our lives, but some driving habits can be costly, regarding fines, as well as the points system. Some habits are serious and hard to break, and you often don’t even realise that what you are doing is wrong because you have done it for so long, without consequences! We are going to point out some of the most common hbits that all our readers will recognise! Indicating your intentions This is one everyone will recognise. When you are approaching a junction, or passing through one, and do not indicate your intentions, beware. If you are caught,
and there are many more camera cars and unmarked police vehicles around, you could incur a fine of 200 euros. The reason for indicators is quite obvious to most people, although perhaps not to Canarians! Indicators are there to be used, to advise other road users of what we are intending to do. When you fail to use your indicators, you are posing a risk, not only to yourself, but to other road users who are unaware of your intentions. We have all played the “guess which way I’m going
game”, some, sadly, with costly consequences. The best thing to do is ALWAYS use your indicators, even if other drivers around you aren’t. Not respecting the priority of pedestrians If you fail to respect the priority of a pedestrian, then you are running the risk of a fine of 200 euros, and a potential loss of four points from your licence. This depends on the potential risk to those involved. It is very interesting to note that, in the eyes of the law, pedestrians take precedence over drivers, something I am
sure will come as a surprise to many. Pedestrians are considered to be the most vulnerable of all road users. In the event of an accident or incident, it will almost always be the pedestrian who will come off worse, because they will have no protection, hence the need for this law. Failure of allowing an overtaking vehicle to return to its lane Driving very closely behind a vehicle, and/or not allowing sufficient safety gaps, can result in a fine and loss of points, if caught.
We are all too aware that many drivers provide safety gaps for such circumstances, only to find another driver pulling into them, closing any safety gap that had been allowed. Again, this carries a fine of 200 euros, and a loss of four points from your licence. The reasoning behind this is that overtaking is considered to be one of the most dangerous of manoeuvres any vehicle can carry out (other than a sharp, emergency stop). If we move into the path of an oncoming vehicle and a collision occurs, and both vehicles are travelling at 50 kilometres per hour, the overall impact would be the same as hitting a solid object at 100 kilometres per hour. We have seen these types of accidents, and they appear to be more common, often because of the lack of experience of one or both drivers, or sheer recklessness. It is imperative that, when overtaking, you consider the speed you are travelling, and that of any oncoming traffic. Perform this manoeuvre in the shortest possible time. We can see that preventing an overtaking vehicle from returning to the correct side of the road can put many lives at risk. However, many drivers do just that, and block a vehicle from returning to the right side of the road. One wonders why!

CD Tenerife MIRANDÉS and Tenerife shared the points in Anduva, following a grey, miserable match in which both teams preferred to defend, rather than attack. It was the first time Mirandés had failed to score at home this season, yet they had enough chances in the final stretch to have added three points to their tally. But Tenerife, who dominated possession and had some close chances, were left asking how they hadn’t won. The visiting team started better, with López Garai’s men taking control, and trying to break through the Mirandés defence, but to no avail. Tenerife used Milla to run the match, but the lack of depth and chances were evident because they didn’t really threaten Mirandés keeper Limones, who was able to enjoy a relaxing afternoon! Mirandés themselves, who were even worse, just couldn’t combine fluently. Star player Marcos André barely came into play in the first half, except for a timid attempt at Ortolá, and they lacked flair whenever they got near the CDT area. And, until Nahuel appeared after half-an-hour, there hadn’t really been any decent chances. But he actually forced a save

from the home keeper, which was something for the small group of away fans to cheer about. In the next play, Malbasic had the ball in Limones net, only to see it ruled out for offside. Garai attempted to force something to happen by taking off Bermejo and replacing him with Miérez on the left wing, but without success. And the second half wasn’t much better

when it came to football. Tenerife continued to push, and Borja Lasso tried his luck, only to shoot extremely wide. Mirandés coach Iraola then decided to makes changes by taking off Álvaro Peña to look for something different, using Álvaro Rey’s height. But Tenerife, encouraged by Garai on the touchline, continued to try to attack, managing to get threequarters of the way up the
pitch, but with no hint of decisiveness into the danger area. They had a couple of good chances, via a free-kick and a good cross, but, again, they couldn’t trouble Limones, who was wellprotected by Matheus and Marcos André. Just before the final whistle, Mirandés had their best chances of all; firstly, with a shot by Marcos André who, after turning inside
the area, was stopped by Ortolá, and then from a Rey free-kick, which hit the post in the dying seconds, guaranteeing a 0-0 stalemate. An away point is better than none, and Tenerife now sit 17th in the league on goal difference, with three other teams also on 13 points. But they need an improvement against high-flying Huesca, at home tomorrow (Saturday), because they are in fourth position.
Rugby
England fined for their haka V-sign ENGLAND have been fined a four-figure sum, following their V-shaped formation during New Zealand’s haka, before their World Cup semifinal showdown last Saturday. Eddie Jones, their head coach, was behind the tactic, which was employed before the kickoff during their opponents’ traditional Maori war dance. And while the V-shape is not an issue, England have been fined and reprimanded by World Rugby after breaching regulations, which state that opponents must not cross the halfway line during the prematch ritual. Six England players could be
seen in breach of the ruling, but captain Owen Farrell said: “We knew we had to be in a radius behind them. But we didn’t want to stand there and let them come at us. We wanted to be respectful, but we didn’t just want to stand in a flat line.”
Officials could be seen asking players at both tips of the V to retreat, including Joe Marler, Billy Vunipola, Mark Wilson, Elliot Daly, Luke Cowan Dickie and Ben Youngs, but they failed to succeed. According to the Guardian newspaper, England have
been fined less than the £2,500 France had to pay when they adopted a similar formation during the 2011 World Cup final. Then, most of the French squad stood in advance of the halfway line. World Rugby have stuck by their policy again, having
brought in its “cultural ritual protocol” in 2007. That came as a response to France’s first answer to the haka, which ended with players from both sides going nose-to-nose. It followed the French forming a tricolour in red, white and blue T-shirts, just a few feet away from their counterparts. England’s Mako Vunipola revealed: “We talked about it as a team but everything has to get past the boss, who gave us the idea. We wanted to be respectful, but we also wanted to make sure that they understood we would be ready for the fight. “We knew it would rile them up. It probably felt like we disrespected them, but we meant no offence by it. We just wanted to let them know that we were ready for the challenge ahead.”

Pink Elephant are the League’s dark horses HI all. It was the second catch-up week, and we got through a few games, but there are still more to go. Some of the outstanding matches involve teams that played elsewhere, so they couldn’t do any catching-up.
But I believe more are planned for this week, so that will help with league positions, for handicapping. Just for a change, we will go to Division 2 first, and The Club House, who had the Pink Elephant team to entertain. It’s worth noting that the Pink Elephant are sitting in second spot, but they have two games in hand on leaders Club Activo, so losing 5-3 to them is no disgrace for The Club House, and, as Lynn Hind said, it was clearly a very good night. “Wow what a fantastic night at The Club House. Great night with fun, laughter and good food. Thank you so much to the whole team. Some great darts were thrown tonight well done everyone. Xx” Back to leaders Club Activo, who were at home to Ourplace Playgirls, and I don’t need to tell you what happened, because I always have Graham’s words to quote: “Activo v Playgirls 7-1 to Activo! Trebles to Activo!
Well, where do we start? Four ladies and a gentleman arrived to play, and the match was like a rollercoaster’s ups, downs, twists and turns. It didn’t help that it was Sergio’s birthday! Great night of darts, and the girls loved the battered sausage. LOL.” I was going to leave it at that, but there has to be questions to answer: why was there only one battered sausage? How many girls were sharing it, and how big was it? Surely it was a whopper! Palms Sports Bar travelled to Pas O’Nadas, and taking the trebles meant that they also took a 5-3 away result for the Palms. A couple of Division 1 games, starting with Loch Inn Bullseye’s first match from their new home, which is Busteva Bar, middle square, San Blas, very close to the taxi rank, making it both easy to find, and easy to stagger to a taxi from, after the match. Anyway, they welcomed Waterfall, and took the trebles, to hold out for a worthy draw. (photo) In the other division one match, Pas O’Nadas International, who are smiling in the picture, Hang on, they’re all smiling, except the one on the end. Well, International are the ones in white shirts. They had the visit of Gaffers # Team Hollywood to contend with, and again, the trebles proved decisive. But they took a 5-3 home win, Lazaro from Pas O’Nadas
